Acer Aspire 5552G: Deleted language pack - BIOS, can't change boot pri order

Question: Acer Aspire 5552G: Deleted language pack - BIOS, can't change boot pri order

Hi dear!

I got an old computer that I used for perhaps one year ago, and what I did to destroy it was to delete the language pack somehow. Now I would like to try to fix it, as I actually need it. But I do have some issues, maybe someone of you guys know. I can start it up all the way to where I choose between safe mode, and so on - then I get the blue screen that lasts the whole 2 seconds, amazingly enough.

I have Windows 7 Installation, that's all I have. When I start up my PC also says two fix the problem:
1 Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2 Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3 Click "Repair your computer".

Had this been as simple as the system claims, I would have been fixing it myself asap. The problem is that when I put the CD, restart the pc is also nothing happens. So I've searched up a bit, where you can do so in a way pc starts via cd so I can install windows 7 The problem is when I enter the BIOS I can choose between "Information, Main, Security, Boot and Exit ". When I go to BOOT it says "Boot priority order" and that's the list:
1 IDE0 WD
2 IDE1: PIONNER DVD-RW
3 USB FDD:
4 Network Boot: LEGACY PCI DEVICE
5 USB HDD
6 USB CD / DVD ROM:

I can not do anything here, no matter what I press. It's sort of gray text, what I can do about is completely black. So it turns out that they are locked. What should I do ..

Have also tried ALT + F10, the Acer eRecovery Management. When trying to complete recovery where it says "Please complete operating system setup process before doing system recovery can not start up".

So all this recovery stuff on Acer PCs are the totally meaningless. Anybody have any idea how to fix this giant problem, is not going to send it to repair - does not guarantee it. Would have been cool to getting this fixed. Do not have as much bearing on the PC, so if you first help me - please do not use advanced computer geeky words, you get my point I think!

Preferred Solution: Acer Aspire 5552G: Deleted language pack - BIOS, can't change boot pri order

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is my problem..

I am curantly working on a Acer aspire 4520. The problem with this computer is that it has sticky keys, first i thought it was the keyboard so i plunged in a usb keyboard and still had the same problems, keys don't react fast, when i turn caps lock on it turns it off and vise versa, when i use the mouse to click something it selects everything on my desktop and opens it all at once.

So i thought it might be a bad OS, so i decide to preform a reinstall of windows vista but when i go to the BIOS it wont let me change the boot order, when i press the keys to chang the order it just makes a beep.

so i went back and did more research and found that some other people are having the same problem and they told me to do i BIOS flash, but that did nothing.. this is the website..

Hi all, I have an insteresting issue, i have a acer aspire 5552g running win7 and the latest bios (upgraded it to try to fix this issue) I see when looking at google that there are quite a few Acers that have a similar problem and i think i have tried most if not all of their fixes.  The issue is that you turn the laptop on, and the power lights come on, but nothing on the screen.. no post, nothing.. i can hear the hdd, dvd and fan start but the screen stays blank. i saw of some forums that it could be a corrupt bios so i used Acers flash utility to upgrade the bios from 1.3 to the latest.pressing PF2 or PF8 to jump to setup or safe mode does nothing, sometimes.. and i do mean sometimes, pressing FN and ESC will get it to boot to windows, but it is rare and this issue is very intermittant. I have tried removing the battery and the bios battery, and discharging the power by holding power key for 30 seconds, and starting on mains, but no luck. if and when i do get the machine to go into windows, it seems to behave itself most of the time.. although i have noticed that on a few occasions (even when im in the bios) the touch pad and keyboard stop responding? very weird.. if it only happened in windows i would suspect driver problems, but in the bios as well???? does anyone have any suggestions for a fix please?  i am pretty tech savvy and can strip the laptop down if needed. Thanks Enopho

Hey everyone,

I own the Acer Aspire 5552G-7641 and I've had it for a little over two years now. One of the main problems I have with it is its temperature. Right now, when all I have open is Firefox and iTunes, the temperature according to Speedfan is as follows:

HD0: 43C
Temp1: 85C
GPU: 79C
Core:86C

I have the rear of my laptop suspended about 2cm in the air by putting two bottle caps in the rear corners. This is an attempt to promote better cooling. When I play video games, it overheats to the point that the laptop shuts off automatically.

I understand that the majority of overheating issues is not cleaning enough. And indeed I have never cleaned my laptop before. However, opening the laptop or bringing it to a tech-guy is not really an option at the moment. I have read on many forums that using compressed air is efficient, but I have also read that it can be extremely dangerous on laptops because of water moisture. Also, they seem to only pertain to desktops.

With that said, I am here to ask for advice as to what to do with this thing. The only ventilation hole is on the left of the laptop and takes up about 1/3 of the side. If any additional information is needed, I will gladly provide it. Thank you.

Hi, I have aceraspire m3 581p notebook. I had changed the language from control panel and everything was in english except the startup/boot options. I was ok with it until I got a problem with the windows and I had to reset it to factory default So here are my two problems 1) How do  I change the language of boot and advance options? 2) I was able to start the recovery manager from Windows. However when it reached 35%, it says the factory restore had a problem. Now since my windows is deleted, I am no longer able to access the recovery manager. Not even alt+f10 works. I can see a windows reset option in advanced boot options but  when it reaches some percentage, it fails. Can someone please tell me how to resolve this two issues I will really appreciate your help Kind RegardsArif

Hi all,
I have an old Dell laptop that is currently running Windows XP, but I'd like to install Linux on it. So I went into the BIOS, revision A14, and got to the page that changes boot order, so I can boot from CD. It says to use the right and left arrow keys to change it, but they don't do anything. So I am stuck with having to boot from floppy which I can't do for unrelated reasons. Any ideas on why I can't change this? The keyboard works fine, I can change other settings, just not this. Or am I totally missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

Try moving to the selection you want and hit enter.
That might give you a selection window.
If not try + and -.

I have 2 sata slots on my Motherboard so I put in a 160 gig hard drive with windows xp worked fine. Now I have one 40 gig IDE harddrive I wanted to put in just as a storage drive.(This computer has both Sata and IDE) computer reboots sees both drives I press F10 or 9 to continue . Then the screen goes black. I know whats happening,, Its reading the IDE to boot from and it doesnt have an O.S. on it. I want it to boot from the sata drive, SO I go into bios to change the boot order.. Every thing including the time is not letting me change it. Bios lock down ... Now I remember going into bios last year and I was able to change settings . Something happened! Now I cant change it. I even pulled out the dvdrom and put the IDE on the ribbon and power.... I heard that might fix the problem on another message board. SAME Problem. I see people with similar problems and the answer is to flash the bios,,, I have been reading about flashing bios and everyone says don't do it if you don't know what your doing. (PAPER WEIGHT IF DONE WRONG) Some one give me some advise and please something that helps !! I have heard so many dumb things to do I'm about to give up.

I have read many of the posts here on this subject. I have Googled and read many inputs on how to solve this problem. None of these have worked for me.
Here are some of my system specs:

Dell Inspiron 17R 5721
OS Name Microsoft Windows 8 Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3517U CPU @ 1.90GHz, 2401 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical
BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A03, 10/24/2012
SMBIOS Version 2.7
Embedded Controller Version 1.01
BIOS Mode UEFI

Secure Boot State On

Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 G

As so many others have written, I can't change the boot-up order which means at this time, I can only boot from the hard disk.
I am hopeful that it is my ignorance that prevents me from accessing and changing the order, and that some good hearted soul will set my down the right path.

Thanks
James

Hey guys,

My PC is running Windows 7. In the past I never had an issue running memtest from my CD. I would put the CD into the PC, restart the PC, press a certain key (I think) and Memtest would load.

Unfortunately I forgot what key I used to press and Memtest won't load, it goes straight to the Windows Startup Screen and the Desktop loads.

I went into Bios and I saw that CD/DVD was not #1 in the boot order which is strange because I used to run memtest many times on this PC and I never changed the Boot order.

I tried changing the boot order by hitting the + key but the key won't do anything. Is there some other key that I need to press in order to get + or - working?

also I see two CD/DVD's in the boot order of the Bios, I guess it's because I have two CD/DVD drives? Which one do I make #1? The Memtest disc is in the bottom CD/DVD drive.

Any help is much appreciated

Answer:Can't change boot order in Bios to run Memtest

Usually Memtest starts automatically without any key presses if your CD/DVD drive is 1st device.

What brand and model motherboard are you using? Usually it tells you at the bottom of the screen in the BIOS what keys you have to press to navigate through the menus. The manual probably explains it in great detail, but I know, who reads those things?

We aren't going to be able to tell you which drive is which, you will just have to try trial and error with at most 2 restarts.

I have a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 motherboard MA785GM-USTH. I have tried several times to set the BIOS to boot first from a cd/dvd. It does not change the boot order. I continues to boot from my hard drive. I want to boot from a UBUNTU CD and I can't. Can someone help?

Answer:My Gigabyte BIOS won't change the boot order

My short answer here to this, is that it sounds like your BIOS needs a swift kick in the pants! Maybe the BIOS just needs a jump start, maybe to get things back on track. This is just a real quick little fix, if it works.

1. Remove the computer from power, unplug the power cord from the power supply.

2. Take the side panel off your computer case, exposing the guts of the machine.

3. Look for the motherboard, then look for a small shiny chrome colored battery.

4. Remove that chrome colored battery off the motherboard.

5. With the battery removed, take your hand and press the (power) button on the front of the case.

6. Keep that button depressed and or pushed for approx. 30 to 40 seconds, while your computer BIOS is drained of it's power and hopefully it's current setting.

7. Let off the (power) button, replace the chrome battery back onto the motherboard, replace the side panel of the case and reconnect the computer power cord to the back of the power supply.

Now turn on your computer and see if that helped take care of some things! Again, this is just one of those quick fixes that may or may not always work.

Hope this helps.

This is the first time I've seen a computer with a boot order that can't be changed. It's a rebuilt Dell E520. When I go to the bios, it lists about 7 changes that can't be made, and one is the boot order. It boots the HD first and the CD/Rom second. period! So is there some other way I can run the Reinstallation CD so I can repair whatever it is that's making this machine seem like it's got the FengXing Infection? Thanks, Bahb

Hi there, I hope this is the right forum for this question.

My son has an i7 custom build computer and the previous owner gummed the computer up good with malware etc. The current setup is Windows 8, but our goal is to install a fresh copy of windows 7 Professional 64-bit which we have purchased "intended for distribution with a refurbished PC".

This is a bit of a project for us, so we are taking our time with it, and hopefully learning something along the way.

We are trying to wipe the HDD completely on the machine, but we are unable to run DBAN to do so, because every time we restart the machine it keeps booting up in Windows instead of DBAN. I have gone into BIOS and changed the order of the BOOT to read from the CD-ROM followed by the USB before the C Drive (I have copies of DBAN on both USB drive and CD-ROM). But it is still not booting. Not sure what to do???

Cheers,

Sean

Answer:can't boot DBAN trying to change boot order in BIOS not working

It is possible you have not created a bootable CD/USB. Use Rufus for example. https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Also provide motherboard make/model please.

I am trying to delete all the files from an old HP (XH545) laptop running XP. Its screen doesn't work, so I have it attached to a remote monitor. I have both a bootable floppy and bootable cd which have [email protected] Kill Disk. My intention is to boot one or the other and erase everything on the hard drive.

Problem: I am unable to get into my BIOS to change the boot order. Since I have to do a Fn-F5 to switch over to the monitor, I am unable to get there in time to see when to hit F2 to edit my BIOS. I have been trying for several hours to "guess" when to hit it, still with no success. I'm not even sure I would be able to see the BIOS screen anyway - maybe you have to get past that for Fn-F5 to swap out to the monitor.

If I let the system boot normally, I can swap over in time to see it loading Windows XP.

Question 1: Is there any way to change the boot order from within Windows (or from DOS prompts)?

Question 2: Lacking a positive answer to #1, is there any other way to delete all the files from the hard drive so I can dispose of the laptop?

Thanks!

I was dual booting Windows 8.1 Update and Ubnutu 14.04 From the windows disk manager I deleted all Ubuntu partitions and rebooted my notebook. I was immediatlly present with the grub rescue promt. Normally this is a quick and easy fix, by booting a windows USB/CD and repairing the windows MBR.  My problem is I can't access the bios or the boot menu to change the boot order. Nothing I've tried has let me get into the bios to set my USB stick as the first boot option.  Using the small recovery key button on the side of the notebook which normally boots the notebook to the screen where you can choose which drive to boot does the same as the power button. There is no bios flash screen or abililty to press any keys before getting to the grub screen.  I've drained the battery and left over night hoping this would reset the state it seems to be stuck in but that also did nothing.  Here is a short video showing what happens when I boot the notebook http://youtu.be/2FpC2Deuawk

Hello,
I have a Lenovo laptop that is about 4 years old. It was working fine earlier today but when I picked it up to turn it on it was powered down and the message came up saying BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I tried to restart and enter the bios to change the boot order so I could boot from my windows 7 usb to repair the problem with the command prompt but it would not let me into the BIOS. I tried burning a windows 7 Disc to try that but again it won't boot from the cd/dvd either. I know how to fix the problem but I cannot access the bios to change the settings. What could that problem be caused by? Is the mother board gone? I have seen other posts similar to this but everyone seems to pay attention to the windows part and not answer why they can't access the BIOS. I have tried all the keys, F2, F8, F12, F10, ESC, Del. Normally the F2 key works for entering the bios and the F12 is for changing the boot order on my machine. Please help with this BIOS problem and ignore the Windows BOOTMGR problem.

Thank you

Have a Lenovo H420 desktop that was upgraded about 2 months ago. We backed up everything and want to reinstall Windows 7.

But I can find no way to get into the Setup screen. I've gone to Settings, Update & Security, Advanced Startup and Restart Now. But I have no option to Use a Device. If I choose Troubleshoot then Advanced Options, the subsequent screen has no option for UEFI Firmware Settings.

I've disabled Fast Boot through Power Options in the Control Panel, then tried F2 and the Delete key when starting. Nothing...

The fact that I can't do something that was so easy in Windows 7 is enough reason in itself to remove 10. Throw in the fact that the scanner part of my printer no longer works is just icing on the cake. I have the Windows 7 disk. I just can't figure out how to use it.

Hello reader/answerer of my questions,
I am having some trouble with my 750 ODN's bios. This bios was an official update (3.6) from the support centre, and almost everything has been fine since (the plot thickens!). I decided one day I wanted to dual boot with linux, in particular Fedora (this is not related to it though).

But, when I burned the disc and tried to live boot (too test it out) I found that the boot order was set to hard drive first! I rebooted and pressed f12 - didn't work.
I tried delete and escape - neither worked. I then tried all the f keys - none of them worked.
Every time it took me to Windows boot menu, and I explored that and I couldn't find anything.

It's also worth mentioning I am running Win 7 SP1.
I tried both PLoP and osloader (too boot from the dvd) - neither worked.
I also can't remember what the key to start the bios was originally - oops!

Also the toshiba logo with instructions never appears.
I would really just like too change the boot order though, the rest of the bios I don't need access too right now.

A separate issue is that Windows randomly decides it wants to check my hard drive, which takes ages, and it won't give up until it gets to check it. I think it may need some medical help.

But, any help, from a qualified doctor or not, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Mitchell

Answer:Satellite L750 BIOS trouble - cannot change boot order

Hi

> I also can't remember what the key to start the bios was originally - oops!

Pressing F2 while powering up the unit would help you to access the BIOS.
But you don?t need to change the booting order within the BIOS. You can do that by pressing F12. This should be done immediately after you have powered up the notebook.
Then the boot menu would appear and you could choose the right boot device.

Does it functions?

I've got a Windows 7 upgrade disc, so I first installed Windows XP and now need to boot from this new disc. Because I'm going from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Windows 7, I have to boot from the disc.

I can press F12 to get into the boot order selection screen; but pressing the arrow keys, escape, or enter has no effect. Once I'm on that screen, I just have to turn off the PC because I can't do anything else.

Both keyboards I've tried have been USB. I actually bought a new keyboard in case my keyboard was the issue, but the stores only had USB keyboards--if USB is the issue, I'll have to wait a few days before I can borrow an old keyboard that uses PS2.

Is there any way to workaround this using the USB keyboard I have?

Answer:Keyboard doesn't work in BIOS, any other way to change boot order?

Try plugging the usb keyboard into the usb port next to the ethernet port.

I have an ACER es13 (Model ES1-332-C4H1)

I have tried to do a reset but if fails saying "There was a problem resetting PC"

So I created a bootable USB win 10 64 - I can't get it to boot from this - I put USB HDD & usb FDD as 1 & 2 in the boot order - but still nothing.
When I press F12 to bring up the boot menu - I don't get an option for USB - Only windows boot manager. Secure boot is set as 'standard' in the bios - But I can't make any changes on the security section of the BIOS

Totally stumped - any ideas welcome

Answer:Acer Aspire E13 BIOS & Won't boot from USB

Hi kingrollo.

You didn't say how you created the USB key. I always recommend you use Microsoft's Media Creation tool to create key.

Could I recommend you retry with this process, insert key and access boot menu.

Sounds like your device has a password set on BIOS. Is this a corporate device, did someone do this for you?

I'm pretty sure Secure Boot has to be set to Disabled.

May have to get manual and see how to remove BIOS password, I assume when you try to change it prompts you, could be wrong, have been before.

I use two language inputs in Windows XP - Chinese (PRC) and English.

The default language was English, but ever since I added Chinese (PRC), it became the default language in the sense that every time I start up a program (e.g. Firefox, Word, etc.), Chinese is the default language input.

Is it possible to change it such that English is once again the default language input?

Answer:If I have set Windows XP to have two language inputs, can I change the order of them?

In the window where you added the keyboard, did you check the the section on top, "Default input language"? I thought that's where we had set it, but can't quite recall.

Hello guys,

I have just come across a serious issue with my 4 year old Acer Aspire 5536 (I know its old but i like it and it still performs). Anyway when pressing the power button the fan speeds up the lights come on but the computer will not start.

To get my computer to start I need to power on the computer and cover the fan vent for about 10 mins and restart and after i have done that it will run perfectly.

Does anybody have any ideas? I would prefer to fix the issue rather than buy a new laptop

Jason

Answer:Acer Aspire 5536 Bios Won't Boot

You have to cover the fan vent to get it to start ? One of the problems with laptops not starting or overheating is dust clogging up the internal CPU fan causing it to stop and thus overheat and shut down the system which CPUs are designed to do, so I am surprised that by covering the fan vent this allows the laptop to start or am I not understanding your problem ?

Hello!

I have an Acer Aspire One, that doesn't boot into Windows or into Safe Mode. I have tried to Flash the Bios as explained on many other sites, but I can't get that to run. I have also tried to F8 to Repair Computer option, but I do not get Repair Computer as an option. I'm stumped! When I restart it, it gives me the option to run in Safe Mode, if I do that it gets hung up on file: amdagp.sys. If I start normally it gets stuck on the Windows start screen. Help!!

Answer:Acer Aspire One won't boot, can't flast bios!

F8 is to access Safe Mode, Alt-F10 is used to access the Acer Recovery partition. See this link on the Acer website. I'm not sure why you were trying to flash the BIOS as that most likely wouldn't fix your boot problem.

I have an Acer Asprire 7540 which wil not boot any further than the bios.

I can enter the bios and change settings but once this is done all I get is a black screen.

I have changed the boot up sequence to CD in order that I can reformat or re-load the recovery disc, but this has no joy - still black screen after the save and exit.

The problem started after a reboot. I had previously been downloading a torrent before the re-boot. No warnings from an up to date AV.

Hope you can help.

Hello,

I suppose changing the display language is part of "customisation", I apologise in advance if this is the wrong forum.

My current setup is Windows 8.1 Pro Update version 64-bit. The software was bought in Germany, where I currently reside, but German not being my native language I wanted to use something more convenient like English. The process to change the display language was very easy, and now almost all my display text is in English... save for a few places.

I'd say most of these do not matter, such as the computer greeting me with "Wilkommen" instead of "Welcome", or asking me for my "Kennwort" instead of my password, or the network icon in the settings charm bar being labeled as "Netzwerk". I can still work like this, it's not the end of the world. However, if someone has encountered this issue before, or if some pointers could be given to solve this, my OCD would be extremely grateful.

Things I have tried is to set my location to United Kingdom, also changing the system locale to the UK. I tried changing the display language back and forth between french (my native language, which I do not like to use for computer purposes) and english to see if the german language artifacts disappeared, but no such luck.

Of course, since "Deutsch" is the language which the OS was installed with, it cannot be removed from the language packs. It is simply not displayed.

Many thanks in advance for your help !

Answer:Language pack : remaining artifacts after change

Hi Bergamoth, welcome to the Eight Forums.

See this tutorial: Region and Language Settings - Copy to New Users and Welcome Screen - Windows 7 Help Forums. The tutorial is for Windows 7 but the procedure is the same in Windows 8.

Copying settings as told in the tutorial, your Welcome, Sign in, Sign out, Hibernate / Sleep and Shutdown screens are turned to English. Additionally this setting changes the language of the built-in administrator account and all future user accounts you will create.

See this post for another idea, reinstalling using English install media and your original product key.

Installing the language pack does not make it active, try the following page for instructions on how to change the active language.

Is there a way to tell the touchpad vendor on my laptop? The crappy old hardware detection utility won't tell it to me. I have installed Windows 10 on the laptop and now I have a generic PS/2 mouse driver only. I need the vendor specific driver since I must disable tap-to-click feature which drives me crazy. The drivers page of the laptop offers me three equally non-working driver choices (Synaptics, ELANTECH & ALPS) and I wish that if I could identify the vendor, I could find a newer driver from somewhere else. ps. If I cannot resolve the issue, I will literally trash the thing with a baseball bat and buy a proper laptop. And, the vendor of the new laptop won't be Acer.

Hello, I'm new to the 7forums and I need help.
I've been trying to fix my Windows for 3 days straight now and I'm not really progressing.

This is to help you understand what situation I'm in:
I've asked my dad to help me with something and he did a little extra which messed up my register and after working on that for about a day we decided to Repair install my windows and see if it helped, he got me this Win7 SP1 ISO and upgraded and everything went just fine, but the language was in English and I was unable to change it. I've been on this forum and a few others looking for a solution and didn't quite find out what to do, what I've done so far is:
- Checking optional updates, yet there were none considering LP's and I couldn't find the 'show hidding updates' check either.
- Copying language files from another computer, which got the language into the list of selectable languages but I ended up having a 50/50 English - Dutch on my computer.
So after a lot of trying my dad got me this ISO which was included all versions including my 64 bit Ultimate SP1 version which I've been using but it was all in Dutch, so we got that problem out of the way.
But when I go to the setup it asks me where to install and when I choose the C: drive it only says it would overwrite it and I never get to those the 'Upgrade' option to Repair install.

So basically what I'm asking for here is this:
- How do I fully install this language pack into my windows? (Microsoft site hasn't been any help, coul... Read more

Answer:Unable to change language (pack) nor Repair installing.

So I'm having a dual boot system (Windows and Ubuntu) and since I disassembled my laptop some hours ago the laptop boots directly into Windows (ignoring the GRUB OS selection screen).

I'm having a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 10 (Insider Preview) and a Samsung EVO 840 SSD on which my both OSs are installed.

When booting into BIOS I can't change the order of booting (Windows is stuck at the 1st position).

Any idea on how to solve this?

Answer:Can't change BIOS order

You need to update the boot file location.

I use rEFInd not grub so (from Windows Administrator command prompt) I run this whenever Windows resets it which it does on occasion.
Code:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi

You probably want to do something like this (again from windows command prompt).
Code:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

If you can't remember or don't know where you installed grub (or what the name is) then mount the ESP and have a look - your loader will be in the EFI directory somewhere.

Hello, my new Acer Aspire Notebook has my IE homepage stuck to global.acer.com and I can't change it through any of the IE options (Use Blank, Use Current, or typing it in manually - I'm trying to set it to Google).

I went to this page to solve the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q320159 (Home page setting changes unexpectedly, or you cannot change your home page setting).

As per Microsoft's instructions, I tried changing the "Start Page" value in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main," but I got the following error: "Cannot edit Start Page: Error writing the value's new contents." There was no "Default_Page_URL" entry in there.

I was able to change the "Default_Page_URL" value to "Google.com" under "HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main" and the "Start Page" value in there was already set to "http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&clcid={SUB_CLSID}&pver={SUB_PVER}&ar=home"

The "Default_Page_URL" and "Start Page" entries don't exist in the "HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main" key.

Lastly, the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel" subkey doesn't exist either.

I would appreciate any help you could give me, thanks!

I have Windows Ultimate x64. It's a fresh (re)install. After retrieving all available updates (including all optional drivers) and rebooting, I tried to install the Japanese Language pack via Windows Update and after maybe around twenty minutes of the software trying to install, Windows Update reports an install failure. The error message is:

Code:
Code 80070643: Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
I Googled the error code, and Microsoft says that the error is caused by a possibly corrupt .NET install. After using their .NET cleaner and reinstalling all the applications, the error persists. I looked further on Google and read a post by someone with the exact same problem as me. It looked like he was able to fix his problem pretty easily, and he explains how he resolved it in his following post, but his explanation is a little over my head. From what I can tell he used bcdboot to tell Windows where the reserved system partition is or something like that. But without explicit instructions I'm kind of in the dark. I'm not good with Windows. I prefer Linux. Basically I need what he did explained in Captain Dummy talk... I think his solution is the solution to my problem as well.

Answer:Installing language pack on a multi-boot system fails

Hey neat! I fixed it myself by guessing at the guy's instructions!

What he did was issue the following command:

Code:
bcdboot C:\windows /s C:
And marked my system partition as active by using the administrative tools. I thought this would remove my boot loader, but it didn't, I still have GRUB. I think I basically just gave myself write permissions to the system drive, which Windows needed to install the language pack.

I just got my 260 G1 Mini from an online German vendor and the BIOS language is set to German. I can't seem to find a way to change the BIOS language to English (or French). Haven't tried the BIOS Configuration Utility since my system is not in the compatible hardware list. Tried flashing the BIOS with the latest version on the US HP site, didn't work. Tried clearing CMOS (both by pressing the CMOS clear button and by removing the battery) but the BIOS defaults to German anyway. What can I do to get it in a language I understand? Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer:Change BIOS Language on a HP 260 G1 Mini

Called support and the solution is pretty simple: juste press F8 within the BIOS, easy as that. Why is this documented nowhere?! Hope that now, at least, this will help out other people with this stupid problem.

Hi
I have some encounted an error (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME) and I need to reinstall my Win XP. I only have Win XP Cd. But my computer doesnt seem to detect the cd that is in CD-ROW.
I have tried to change the BIOS order. This is what I did to change it. (P.S. I am not sure if I am really changing the boot order or not, that is why I listed out the steps that I have done)
- Press "Del" to Setup
- Go to "BOOT"
- Then see a list like this:
1. Removable Device [legacy floppy]
2. IDE Hard Drive [WDC WD400BB-00DEA07]
3. ATAPI CD-ROW [ARTEC WRA-WA48]
4. Other Boot Device [INT18 Device (Network)]
- Change ATAPI CD-ROW to the top of the list.
-Restarted computer

Result: My computer didn't recongize there is a CD in CD-ROW......
Please help. Thanks~
P.S. I dont have the SIX Win XP start up disks, and I'm not able to get that thing in short peroid of time. Thus, using CD disk is the only way I have to reinstall Win XP.

Hello,

I could not find a more appropriate category, please excuse if error.
I have an Acer Aspire M1201 :

Chipset: AMD 740G
AMD Athlon X2 4450e dual-core
Bios R03-B0
Windows XP Prof

My problem is that I cannot find a driver pack for the chipset. The video, LAN port, audio...etc.. are all on the motherboard and I believe that there is (or should be) a "package" of drivers available. I've checked Acers website, no joy, the M1201 isn't listed in the driver download section. The motherboard originates with a manufacturer called Gigabyte, they have an automated driver download tool, but it does'nt seem to detect all the devices, the only driver it listed as being needed was for the audio and when I tried to install, it told me that I was missing the system bus driver. Would appreciate any help available or pointers in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.....

Answer:Acer Aspire M1201 chipset (AMD 740G) driver pack

Welcome to TSG!

Found only these two motherboards on the Gigabyte site that use the AMD 740G Chipset. There are Audio, Chipset, LAN, and SATA Raid drivers. Looks like the drivers are the same for both models, but I included both links. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2813
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2775

Perhaps these will work for the Acer. Found an Aspire M1200 on the Acer site, but it only has Vista drivers, and looks like an NVIDIA Chipset. The specifications for the M1200 says AMD 740G Chipset though. An email to Acer Support might be worth a shot.

I have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly.

Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there!)

When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.... that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.

There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.

I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning.

There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.

The info... Read more

Hi,
I had received a Toshiba L650 laptop as a gift, and i see that the BIOS is in other language than english.
The OS is in english, so no problems there.
The BIOS is in Swedish, as a friend left me his laptop.

*How can I change the BIOS language???*
Is there an option to do so? or do I have to "flush it" (not really understand what this means)?

+HELP!!!+

Thanks!

Answer:Satellite L650 - How to change BIOS language?

Hi

Most BIOS versions included a language option.
Power up the unit, press F2 in order to get into the BIOS and on the first page you should see a option to change the BIOS language.

I don't know if a ThinkCentre S50 works the same way as a NetVista PC here, but you might want to give that procedure a try.

Hello everyone: Recently I have got this product, but BIOS language is in German and I'd like to know if it is posible to change it. Note that in hp support page, in the "product release information" section says that this product has been sold in only for Austria and Germany. Maybe that's why it is not posible to change the language to another one different from German. Please, let my know if itt is posible to change it, and if yes, how to do it.Thank you in advance!

It will be interesting to know which notebook model you have. By problem description it is always useful to know exact notebook model.

When you switch off your notebook press F12 and let us know what happen exactly. By the way: can you explain us what happen when you try to change boot order in BIOS settings?

Hi, hope you can help.
I removed all partitions so if could install windows 7, this turned out to be a mistake as all the drivers for it are windows 8.1

So I downloaded 8.1 to a USB and booted from that. But I don't have the product key as it's tied to the bios? EHCI something to do with it?

People are saying the laptop is now useless? I can't believe that! There must be a way?

Answer:ACER Aspire OEM / deleted recovery partition

I have never seen a driver not be found for Win7 in tens of thousands of installs we've directly helped with here since beta.

What is the PC make and model, and exactly what drivers were missing after you followed the steps for Clean Reinstall Factory OEM to a driver-complete OS? At the most after all Updates are done there should only be a handful still missing which our driver specialists here can find in no time.

My Dell Inspiron 660 is 2 months old. It came with Windows 8 preinstalled. My problem: I am trying to change the boot order so I can boot from CD ROM as a first option. I have tried using the "F" keys on boot, but it just ignores me and goes on to boot up. I have also tried the "Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings" in "Change PC Settings" and got the same results. I spent some time on the phone with a Dell tech. After trying all the things I had already tried, he and his supervisor decided I must have a bad Motherboard. Does this sound right? Is there any way to repair this problem?

Answer:Can't get into Windows Boot Manager to change boot order.

The option your looking for is located in the BIOS. Try using the Del key to access the BIOS setup screen on startup.

I tried F12 when booting up PC and got a screen called Boot Menu. C drive has a plus sign beside it. I used the arrow to go down to CD rom and hit enter.

When I tried to boot from the CD disk, it still booted into Windows, and when I used F12 again C drive is the one with the plus sign. I'm not sure what the plus sign means. I only have one hard drive in this PC.

Answer:How do I change boot order to boot from WinPE emergency CD-R?

My wild guess is that your computer is UEFI -- SecureBoot and FastBoot need to be turned off. If there is a Legacy choice, maybe activate Legacy. Then, with a dvd or usb stick in the respective place [to let UEFI "find it"] -- select your first boot choice again, save and exit, reboot.

So i took a peak in my bios screen today and i see the dvd drive is listed as the first boot option. I wanted to change it to the hdd, but it wont let me. This is the first time i have encountered this. I can select the menu, and i can move the arrow up and down to select the "new" first boot, but when i hit enter and i am returned to the main screen the order still says dvd drive.?...what gives, any ideas?
thanks

Answer:Cant change boot order/xp pro

I'm running two DVD drives and three harddrives.
All the drives are SATA and I'm not using RAID.
I set the "CDROM" as third boot device in "Boot Device Priority" and disable the 4th.
Set which HD to boot off in "Hard Disk Drives".

Not sure why yours won't save HD as first boot device.

Question: change boot order?

is there a way to change the order in which applications i have set to boot load at start up? i want my antivirus to load first before anything else, and it did until i installed a printer.... is it possible to change this?

Answer:change boot order?

Disconnect from Internet before trying:

Uninstall both AV and printer.
Install printer.
Install AV.

If that does not work, there is a way to detect load order with a utiliity by that name from http://www.sysinternals.com. You can see the actual load order only with that kind of utility. Installing the anti-keylogger software SnoopFree indicates that its service is the first item to load before any other system service. So, there is a way to have it your way that the author of Snoopfree knows about - but, I have since forgotten, but that's the best example of the situation you want that I know of.

A bit of research should uncover the technique used.
