Question: Log Onto an Unresponsive Desktop Background (No Icons, etc.) [Many Details Inside]

Please view this thread if you have a potential solution: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/for...desktop-background-no-icons-etc-many-details/

Hello friends, I am in need of some desperate help, and I wasn't sure where to post this. =x
I've been experiencing this problem for over a day now, so I'm just going to post the "logs" I've written down as I've gone through the process of trying to find a solution.

Background: I've had this computer for almost a year, and have never experienced a problem with it before yesterday.

My Specs: i5-4670 @ 3.4GHz, Adata XPG V2 8GB DDR3 1600, Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3, Thermaltake Smart Series 750w PSU, NVIDIA GTX 760 2GB, and I run Windows 7.

Note: The main problem at this point is that when I load my computer, the only thing that shows is my desktop wallpaper and nothing else - icons, taskbar, etc. don't load. When I try to Ctrl+Alt+Del, the screen goes black and I hit either spacebar or Enter to get back to the unresponsive desktop wallpaper screen once again.
The problem all started when I attempted to boot up the computer one morning, the lights turned on for a split second and immediately turned off once again. After searching Google thoroughly, it appeared as if this was the computer attempting to stop from short circuiting. I personally have no experience with computer hardware whatsoever, so I was baffled as to what to do, as the computer would not start up anymore. My father simply unplugged everything, took a look inside of the computer, switched on something that appeared to be an alternate on/off thinger, and hooked it up once again. This time, the computer loaded up.

The first thing I see is an error message informing me that the BIOS is corrupted - it goes through this little loading screen and eventually I reach the main problem: an unresponsive desktop wallpaper screen devoid of anything but the wallpaper. I attempted to Ctrl+Alt+Del, expecting to be able to simply run "explorer.exe", but it led me to another unresponsive black screen. After several attempts to reboot the system, I finally decided to go into Safe Mode and run a virus scan. Why? I dunno, I'm not as computer savvy as I'd like to be so I figured it might've been software related. Maybe it is. But.. the virus scan didn't pick up anything, so I immediately ruled out a virus. Next, I attempted a System Restore to a few days prior - the only save point I had was just before a Windows Update, so I did it. Didn't fix a thing.

The next thing I tried was a random solution I came across on Google for the 'main problem' I'm facing, which was disabling all startup services in msconfig while in Safe Mode. I did this, and the computer actually loaded beyond the desktop wallpaper screen. I restarted the computer to apply some updates, and the same problem came back to haunt me: an unresponsive desktop wallpaper screen! After a restart or two, I managed to get past the unresponsive screen, and for approximately three minutes I was able to do the things I'd normally be able to do. Then it simply froze, and became an unresponsive screen once again, and I couldn't even Ctrl+Alt+Del to get a black screen, everything was simply frozen.

When I did manage to get on the next time for whatever reason, I was prompted with an error regarding the display drivers. Nothing I could do from here, so I decided to update my BIOS for whatever reason. I updated it using Q-Flash. For reference, my MoBo is the GA-Z87-HD3. After I did this, I rebooted and everything was working smoothly. Logged on (received this error: "Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered"), restarted to apply changes, and it actually freakin' worked! This worked for the rest of the time I was using the computer - as I was scared to restart at this point - and eventually I got off, shutting down the computer to install those Windows Updates I System Restored in the beginning of this process.

And here I am, the next morning, experiencing the exact same problem that plagued me throughout yesterday, with no plausible solutions in sight.
So, what do I do?!
Kudos and thank you if you managed to read all of this (I tried to be as thorough as possible as to cast away any possible confusion, though making it longer may have added to the confusion..), and thanks to anyone who can provide a solution to this peculiar problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Pull out your CMOS battery for 5 minutes...don't cheat...the whole 5 minutes. Then replace the battery and boot up. This should reset your BIOS back to default.

Your BIOS and/or graphics card is interferring or incompatible with the Windows Updates. Roll back (uninstall) to before the Windows updates and disable windows automatic download and install udpates. Try updating your graphics card and display drivers.
If Ctrl_alt+Del doesnt work, try hitting the shift key five times, if not try booting in safe mode with networking and do a malware bytes scan.

If you can get a program to start, try this Prevx fix
Enter the command: ”C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” “

Hello,

First of all, this is my first post here, so I'm sorry if I'm doing something wrong here.

So, onto the problem. As the title suggests, all my desktop shortcut icons have changed. I know this is a common problem, but after a brief bit of research, I can't seem to find people with either the same problem as me, or a general fix that works. I have no idea how to describe what my icons have changed to, so here's a screenshot:

All of the shortcuts work fine, and the problem has no real effect on the performance or usage of my laptop, but it's just an aesthetic problem.

So far I have:
- Deleted the IconCache
- Created a new user to see if the problem persists (it did)
- Deleted and re-created a shortcut
- Changed the shortcut icon

This problem originally occured because a few of the icons changed, so I downloaded "Microsoft Fixit" to try and, well, "Fixit", and it changed all the shortcut icons.

I hope that at least some of my problem has been described well enough, and any response is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

stb1996

So, recently when attempting to log on to my computer, I found that it prompted me for a log on password, which i had disabled the last time I had the computer running. A blank password did not work, and my old password did not work. Neither did any of my normal passwords for other services. After no luck, I decided to remove the CMOS battery for an hour to make it forget the passwords.

After reinstalling the CMOS battery, I attempted to boot the computer. Nothing appeared via my Monitor and the PC refused to stop trying to run the empty CD drive. I placed in a Windows installation CD to see if that would resolve my issue. It did not. (It may be worth noting here that my drive, despite having proper firmware and all up to date drivers, is not capable of reading 90% of CDs, nor burning CDs, but has no problems with reading or burning DVDs)

I then shut down the computer again, removed plugs and such as per usual to avoid ESD, flushed the power out and unplugged the CD Drive. Hooked everything up again and attempted to boot. With no hookup to the CD drive, the CD drive did not attempt to read, but the computer simply ran doing nothing. It did not attempt to read the floppy drive (It is a newer computer, I always install a FDD for repair purposes.) Nor did it attempt to read the HDD.

I shut it down again, checked all connections and can't seem to figure out what's wrong. No pieces appear burned out. Attempted boot again, same problem. Could not enter BIOS settings... Read more

Hi, my ATMT MP3 player is completely unresponsive, however, the blue backlight is on with a central icon that usually appears when I'm loading music onto it. The icon is a tiny computer linked to usb or something. I had just added a song into the music_me file when my computer had problems and the MP3 window on the computer went white, so I disonnected the MP3 from my computer. It is now stuck on this screen and I have tried connecting it to my computer again and charging it and nothing is working. I am really concerned can anyone help????? This happened about half an hour ago. I would be grateful for any help.

For some reason my desktop keeps becoming unresponsive. Everything else works fine. To open any program I have to go to start menu though. If I restart all is fine. Not sure what the problem is. Possibly something to do with IE9? I am running vista 2. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Answer:desktop icons become unresponsive also can't right click on desktop

Try uninstalling (rolling back) IE 9 Beta to IE8 in Add Remove Programs and see if that solves the problem. You can also do a System Restore to a time before you installed IE 9 Beta.

I first encountered this problem a few days ago. Immediately after it happened, as it was totally unmanageable as it was, I rebooted into Safe Mode and ran Spybot and AdAware. I then rebooted into regular mode today, reran Spybot and AdAware, ran TDS and fixed the suggested entries, then ran HJT and fixed entries that the online analyzer indicated. However, I'm still having popups, and my background appears to be some webpage that changes colors. I can't seem to do anything about it, as the display option doesn't help anything. Here's my newest log:

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:

After running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.

Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).

Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.

Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.

The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.

Thank you for your help.

Hello, first time post here. Ok, my machine is using Vista (sorry, I have no idea what "version" it is) BTW, I am terrible with computers. My problem: lately, every other day or two, I will wake up my computer from sleep mode ( I heard that turning it off and on kills a computer over time ) and I get the desktop wallpaper/background picture but no icons. Pressing escape, or the windows button, or right-clicking to make a new folder, document, etc. doesn't help get me into Windows Vista, nor does it restore the desktop icons. This forces me to turn my computer off and on again, which is slow computer death. What should I do next time this happens? What's going on here? Please remember to use average Joe language when responding. Thanks.

Answer:Desktop Background but no icons = I need help

What are your settings in your Power Options in the Control Panelfor waking after sleep. Do you have it set for a password or not? This information would help in finding a solution.Regards,Gilmister

Answer:get background, no desktop icons

After booting press alt+ctrl+delete, this will bring up Task Manager.

Look in the 'Processes' tab and see if explorer.exe is running.

If it isn't running click on the 'Applications' tab and select 'New Task'.

Type in explorer.exe and click OK.

If the icons and desktop appear then it is possible a program that loads at boot is interfering with the loading of explorer.exe

Hello all,I've recently added a floating webpage to my desktop (via right click>Properties>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web)and it's VERY helpful to get a daily verification code I need for work. The problem I'm having is that my desktop now looks terrible due to my icons now showing a blue background.I've ensured that ?Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop? is enabled and I've tried locking and unlocking desktop items. The only method that reverts my icons back to their previous state with transparent backgrounds is to disable the web page that is on my background.Any advice?

Answer:[XP] Desktop Icons with Blue Background

Well...I'd simply disable the webpage if I was concerned about its effect on the desktop.

Not sure what a floating webpage is...but a simple Send To icon on the desktop...is the way that I use for easy access to a given webpage.

Hi out there. First time user using Window XP Home edition. When the desktop first comes up there are no icons. 1) Expected background (without icons) will come on for 10-15 seconds, 2) background will go blank for second, icons appear on blank background - 3) and finally the background with the icons will come on as they should have. Also - description box below each icon is highlighted. I run AVG anti-virus and AVG anti-spyware regularly. No virus detected. Dell technician updated "display drivers" under "device manager" downloaded and installed "ATI Radeon x/300/x500/x1050" drivers.
Still have the problem. Your help help appreciated.

Following a recent post of a virus problem with one of the kids computers, I managed to solve the problem, but a settings issue has arisen. She is complaining that previously the background of the text description of the desktop icons was transparent. i.e. you could see the text just written on whatever the wallpaper was. but now all the text is in ugly coloured boxes. I canchange the colour no problem, but I cant get a colourless effect like on all the other machines in the house. I cant use system restore as I had to trash all the restore points as part of getting rid of the virus. I personally dont see it as a big deal, but I do appreciate that one persons minor annoyance can be another persons major aggravation. any suggestions anyone?WTM

I did'nt think you could have a transparent icon background. Are you sure that the icon background-colour was'nt just the same colour as the desktop colour?

Hello,
A few days ago I was not able to logon to my PC, a Lenovo Notebook running Windows XP Home. The icons and the task bar were missing and I would get the error message:
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b) .
click on OK to terminate the application.

It will boot into safe mode and run fine. I ran some antivirus and antispyware in safe mode and it found some viruses.
But when I reboot into normal mode I get the same error message and no icons. This may sound strange but the only time i'm able to start windows normally is after running "SDFix" then It boots correctly (with the icons and taskbar) and runs great until I turn it off and restart, then I get the same error as above. unless I run SDFix The only way to get my PC to boot without the error is to run SDFix in safe mode every time I start up my PC?
Thanks

When I log on to my laptop, my desktop icons and start bar are there, but they disappear after a couple of seconds, leaving only my background. This most recent time they never appeared at all, it was nothing but my background. I opened the Windows Task Manager with CTRL ATL DEL and clicked New Task, opened SpySweeper, and ran the sweep.

Something called a zenosearchassistant and some cookies came up.

I quarantined them and deleted them. I ran the sweep again and nothing came up. But my desktop is still not working correctly. So, I did some searching about the zenosearchassistant and from what I can tell it's just supposed to give me endless pop up ads or something, which I never had a problem with at all, so maybe that's not why my desktop is messed up. I've tried restarting a couple of times too, and it' still not working.

Any help is appreciated, thank you guys so much. And if there's somewhere else that would be better for this question, just point me in the right direction. Thanks again.

Hi there

I have set one of my fave photos as my desktop wallpaper but since doing so, all of my desk to icons and text beneath the icons have jagged white edges/boxes around them. It looks scruffy and untidy, and its annoying me!

Its only a small thing but I was hoping someone can advise how to change this so that icons and text sit nicely 'on top' of my desktop wallpaper photo?

Many thanks,

Claire.

Answer:White background desktop icons

Can you try performing these steps to see if that fixes it?

Make sure that ?Lock Web items on desktop? is unchecked. (Right click on desktop --> ?Arrange Icon By? )

1) Right Click on ?My Computer?
2) Select ?Properties?
3) Advanced tab
4) Setting Button under Performance
5) Select the ?Custom? Radial
6) Check ?Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels on Desktop Icons?

I don't know how this happened but my the text for my icons all have white background. It used to be transparent.

This is really annoying.

Any idea how to restore this back to normal?

Thx,

Answer:My desktop icons have white background

By default, icons show the background color of your desktop. Tools such as Tweak UI can be used to enable the clear background.

Ok guys, I've got a wierd problem here where I work, let me explain.

Most of our users are running Windows XP (SP1), and some are still on Win2k (Most recent SP). We're on a novell network (4.90 SP2), and are using eTrust anti-virus.

Some of the users who have windows XP (not all) randomly get the background only after they login to novell. Their Icons and Start menu never appear. The current work around that I figured out was to ctrl-alt-del, New Task, and then run explorer. This suddenly makes their icons and start menu appear. This doesn't appear to happen with Windows 2000.

This has never happened on my computer, but happens to another employee at least 1-2 times per week. I've seen it happen very sporadically to other users (maybe once in the past 6 months). Theres nothing in the event log, and theres no adware or spyware on the machines, I've even seen this happen on a fresh image.

Any of you guys ever seen something like this, and maybe know what could be causing it?

Answer:Desktop background only on bootup, no Icons or Start bar

Anytime I've seen something like that, it was traced back to a driver not loading correctly. There's no log of it, or any way to pinpoint which one, besides upgrading each and every one of them at a time. It never acted like a PC with a ton starting up, where it would eventually load. It would sit and hang like that.

It was never the video drivers. Most often, it was the NIC.

Hello all,

Well I turned on my computer and it started OK but after it appears to be finished with all loading processes the desktop background picture appears with no icons and no taskbar. I try to right click, hit windows button, etc. to get some sort of response or workable area and nothing. I then restarted the computer and tried to boot in safe mode but it always gets to a certain point then restarts itself. So for that reason I can't even give you an OTL report or HijackThis report. Can somebody help me get a workable area so I can see something on my desktop and start trying to clean this problem? Thank you very much in advance.

The OS is Windows XP Pro.

Answer:Desktop Background Visible But No Icons or Task Bar

desktop or laptop? My first bit of advice, remove the network cable / turn off/unplug the wireless

also when you get to safe mode, it's the list of

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
etc etc

or does it reboot before/as that appears?

last question for this post, seems this isnt your only PC, what are the brands and set ups of the PCs you have, might be able to run a connection between them ( but of course i wouldnt do that just yet for fear of cross contamination )

will wait for your response, if I dont get back with you today, I will check again tomorrow morning

I have read numerous posts on this website and others about how to do this, but NONE of the solutions seem to work. I am running WinXP SP3. Here's what I've already tried:

1. Display Properties > Desktop > Customize > Web > [Uncheck Any/All Web Pages]

2. System Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Use Drop Shadow for Icon Labels on the desktop

3. Right-click on desktop > Arrange Icons By > Uncheck [Lock Web Items on Desktop]

None of the above seem to work, so please don't repost the same solution again. I appreciate your help on this.

For some reason anytime I log into my computer, my icons/shortcuts will be there for a few seconds and then they disappear. I can reaccess them for a few seconds by logging out as the user and relogging in. But the same thing happens. I've rebooted, I've made sure the 'view desktop icons' is checked on. Once my icons disappear, I cannot right click to do anything with properties, etc. However, my gadgets (time/calendar) stay on the desktop. Thanks to anyone can help.

And I've messed around so much trying to fix it myself (before asking for help) 'cuz I'm sure it's simple, that now I'm not sure I can remember what I did just before the problem showed up or what I've done to 'try' to correct it. My 1st shot, even tho' blurred, will show that the 'text color' below each icon was white & easy for me to read. The 2nd, after it changed, shows the color more blackish, harder to read. I also think there's a bit of difference in background color? I also messed that up again just before I came to post but didn't think to get a shot.

Answer:My desktop icons & background color changed

you ain't gonna believe this!!!! I closed the forum after I posted above, didn't bother to look at my desktop, clicked on my search site to look for something else which also involved clicking on dt & when I did so, would you believe that the text was back to white!! The background color is still not what I want but am half afraid to try correcting that now. I know there are some issues with my PC (mainly the idiot sitting here typing) but there's no way I can do a 'reinstall' which seems to be the posted answer so many times when I read other posts.

My desktop will not continue to load, it has wallpaper but no Icons, no start button. I can not right click on it. It only has my wallpaper. I can still access most of my programs by going to the Task Manager & they run fine.

But I can't find Recycle Bin. I see other items on desk top in Task Manager but not Recycle Bin. I did move somethings to the recycle bin which obviously was not a good idea that I would like to be able to drag out.

I tried starting in SAFE mode but all I get is a black screen with the words safe mode in the corner.

I have a Dell 8400 that uses XP Any thoughts on how I can get my Desktop to continue to load? Start Button? find Recycle Bin?

I am having a problem with my Windows Vista (Ultimate edition) desktop background that a lot of people seem to share. I can change the background if I select an image in Firefox or IE, and say "set as desktop background", but when I try to change the background through appearance and personalization, i can only use .bmp files, not .jpeg anymore.

I am also having a problem with the icons in my files in Windows Explorer. When I open a file, if it is set to display thumbails, they do not appear. If I click the view button back through the options until it comes around the thumbnails again, they will appear, but they will not show up automatically. I have tried changing the folder view options to only show icons, never thumbnails, but the same problem still exists--even the icons will not appear automatically as they used to.

Here are some screen caps of the problems posted above:

If anyone could help me with this before I throw my computer out the window, that would be appreciated.

Ive tryed sfc /scannow, different checking and unchecking in msconfig then restarting each time, scanning for viruses, trojans, malware, etc. all i got was surfsidekick which i had before this problem occurred. I also found some viruses in the scan on norton but it couldn't be deleted or quarantined this may be problem. I had same problem where the files i was asked to delete in registry weren't there. Just trying to get this over with thx. im using Windows XP Home on a Dell.

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I want to make sure I'm perfectly clear on what you have done. Are you saying you did every single step in the thread your referennced? You looked at all the registry locations and your tried disabling all items using msconfig, and you tried booting in safe mode etc? All the exact same things have been done but nothing helped and nothing looks wrong?

Does c:\windows\explore.exe exist?
What is the file size and date?
What SP revision of XP home do you have?
Do you have an i386 folder anywhere on your hard disk (like c:\i386 or C:\windows\i386 or anywhere else)?
Do you have a bootable XP Home CD or did Dell screw you like everyone else and only give you a recovery CD?

Hi all -

There has to be an easy fix for this, but I just can't seem to figure it out.

My laptop has a background image for its desktop. Recently, I needed to use it with a projector to present a powerpoint. The projector changed the settings for my Display (increasing the resolution) so my icons are now scattered all over the place.

While I changed the resolution back to where I had it before, and icons were easily rearrangeable, the background image goes away. I appears, however, on start up and on shut down, before the icons populate the desktop, or right before it shuts down and the icons disappear.

Anyone know how to get the background to appear there all the time like it should?

Thanks!

Hi all,

I am new to this, and am not highly technical, so please bare with me.

After downloading a file I probably should not have, my computer began a shutdown process. Once I started my computer again the entire desktop was missing, including all icons and the background, the only thing available was the My Documents file folder being open, which is what has allowed me to navigate my computer and the internet. When I attempted restarting in safe mode there was absolutely no difference. I have been able to get the background and icons back with SmitFraud, but then upon restarting it reverts back. I have since removed all other anti-spy and security programs except the Sophos AV solution that came with my laptop and the programs that are in the 5 step process requested on this forum. I have not attached my log file for the HijackThis scan, as one of the rules said I should not until it is requested of me. Please help, as this is my work laptop and I need to get it back as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
John

What's meant by that rule is that copy/pasting the contents of the log is the preferred method rather than attaching the log.

If you haven't received help elsewhere already and still require assistance please perform the following:Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both here.

All of a sudden, when using Google Chrome, the taskbar disappeared, and when I minimized Chrome, the background and desktop icons were missing from the screen, all my windows minimized at the bottom left corner. I restarted my PC but that didn't helped... This happened for no reason, I'm 100% I didn't pressed anything, nor installed anything before that might cause the problem..
I can still open almost everything through a window.. but there's some things that don't work now, like clicking right click on background does nothing, adjusting sound through keyboard also (while adjusting screen brightness works properly), I've also tried to open start menu using my keyboard, but that does nothing.... Google Chrome also doesn't want to open, I'm asking this question through IE....
So, what do I do to fix this problem?
Today, my screen also rotated for no reason, just like smartphones and tablets rotate screens... But, I've fixed that somehow..

Then try to change the settings.

Right click My Computer > select Properties > click Advanced tab > click Settings under the performance section. Scroll down in the box and make sure "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked > click OK.

I have an attachment of what I am talking about. I am wanting the blocks where the names of the files or shortcuts are to be transparent instead of blue.

I have tried this already and it did not work:

Make desktop icons background transparent
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. Then double click on System Icon, system properties window will open.
2. Click on Advanced tab in System properties window.

3. Click Settings button next to performance option.
4. Under Visual effects tab, check (or tick) option ?Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop?. Background color of desktop icons will be set to transparent instead of ugly looking solid blue color.

I am sure it is something simple that I am overlooking :)

Thanks

Similar phenomena appears when scaling icon size up/down. I have searched extensively but not found the problem described elsewhere. System is Win 7 64 SP1 and newest browser versions as of today. - I have tried deleting the icon cache. which makes no difference.
- Installed the program IconPackager and changed Windows default icons to something new and then back again. For someone this helped with a different icons issue. In this case it made no difference.

I have looked for all kinds of fixes online. Many people have had this problem, but the fixes don't work for me.
My HP laptop (Win 7 64) restarted to install updates and when it booted back my Taskbar & Start Menu had disappeared. All there was onscreen was a blue background (instead of wallpaper and desktop icons) and an open window of Windows Explorer. Explorer.exe is running in the Task Manager (I've restarted it just in case but nothing changed). I can browse through my system using the Explorer and I can use the New Task on the Task Manager.

I have access to Control Panel, RegEdit, Windows Explorer, CMD prompt, etc. I can access all my programs from the Explorer.

Besides the issues mentioned, I have discovered this too:

- I have an up to date Avira AV, but now when I try to run a scan it won't show it to me onscreen, even though I can see the process running in the Task Manager.

- My touchpad works (moving the cursor and clicking) but I can't scroll up/down with 2 fingers anymore.

- In Control Panel I can go into different parts of it EXCEPT Folder Options (in Appearance and Personalization). It just won't open.

- Laptop is considerably slower, laggier.

So far, I've tried:

- Closing and restarting Explorer.exe (in Normal and Safe Mode) from the New Task option on Task Manager.
- SFC /scannow

Hello,

I am new to this forum and of course in desperate need of some guidance. A few days ago, my husband's laptop (Windows XP SP3) became infected (his Trend Micro subscription expired). He said that while browsing, all of a sudden music and commercials started playing in the background, a small window appeared and stated the system would shut down (there was a countdown timer in the window). Upon reboot, all of his desktop icons were missing, and very few programs appeared in his start menu.

This happened on May 24th. I restored the system to May 21st and most of the desktop icons reappeared (program icons) but many appeared transparent (document icons), and I think all of the Start Menu's programs returned. I later found that the Hidden attribute for the files on the Desktop was turned on, so I turned that attribute back off and those icons reappeared in full. But I could not get rid of the background music/commercials. I also noticed that while I used IE to look for solutions, the popup window which shut down the system would return frequently. I could not download certain software (MalwareBytes) using IE and a lot of times I would get redirected from a Google search. I was able to download MalwareBytes using Safari for Windows. I ran MalwareBytes and corrected some infections, but the problem with the music/commercials and shutdown still remains.

This morning, I shut off the wireless card and I haven't exeperienced these 2 problems, but we really need to ... Read more

Here's is basically how my system is:
All my desktop icons are stuck on the left side of the desktopAll file explorer view are stuck in details view.

Now yes, I have turned off Auto-arrange, still refreshes to all icons on left. I have tired ALL sorts combinations of view + sort by... nothing.

I have tired many anti-malware/virus scans and nothing has come up. I have tired CCleaner pretty much everything and the problem persists.

Of note, I had done a system restore a week and half ago to a specific point and that fixed the problem but for just a day, then it happened again. When I got around to having time to go for another system restore, that restore point was gone and now no other restore point is fixing the issue -_-

That left me to think it might be something I installed or perhaps a windows update... but after having uninstalled pretty much everything I could that I installed in the last week as well as removing recent updates.... nothing.

I have also tried making a new windows account (local)... nothing. Also tried in safe mode, still nothing.

Sooooo, there must be something fcked in my registry or it's something I have no clue about. Google searching has left me nowhere so I begging for some help pls. Thanks~

After virus attack my background wallpaper gone, desktop icons disappeared except for Mozilla and recycle bin and start menu nearly empty except for the start search at the bottom.Rogue.Fake HDD and Plum.hyjack.Startmenu attacked and I'd really like to get my computer back to being useful again. It believe my data is all there - I can access word documents by naming them individually or requesting into the search menu. I access google by searching for google.ca in the start search and I managed to find Windows Mail which seems to be all there - but its hard to function well without icons and start menu programs etc. I'm afraid I'm a complete tiresome newbie when it comes to this. I did get rid of the virus(s)(successfully I hope) with a copy of malware byes I had on the computer - it actually stopped working and disappeared from my desktop but I managed to get it back and I disconnected from my router and after a long time did manage to get rid of all the virus - 7 in all 4 of them FAKE.HDD and two PLUM.HYJACK.STARTMENU (according to maleware bytes). Can someone help me? Is there a way I can get my desktop and startmenu back to looking normal (or returned to its former condition)?

Trying to access one of my hard drives resulted in My Computer locking up, and upon ending the process explorer seems to get shut down. Task manager wouldn't come up so I'm forced to reset. Also trying to play something in winamp resulted in a sound driver error, when it was working fine beforehand.

I'm currently running Avast and MalwareBytes, and will keep this topic updated, I hope I can fix this....

If anyone has any input please share.

*EDIT*

I'm hoping this was just a random fluke and I'm being paranoid about nothing. Both MalwareBytes and Avast have come up with absolutely nothing on my main drive, though I'm still scanning my backup drive.

*EDIT*

Weird, all those problems stopped on their own, guess it was just a fluke.

Right, so my mother has had quite an issue with her computer for a long time. I never use the PC, so I haven't been able to actually experience all the symptoms. I believe she has a virus. And these are the symptoms I've experienced.

- Random freezing and crashing.
- Computer refuses to install Windows Updates. Even something as little as 1.0mb
- Couldn't install anti-virus software as if something was blocking it from finalizing the process.
- Avast anti-virus scans hangs on one thing indefinitely as if something is stopping it on purpose

I have tried using Malware Bytes to scan for anything but to no avail. And the avast just refuses to work.

First off, I have a Windows Premium Home Vista One, 32bit.

My computer was acting up and had frequent random shutdowns, so I decided to do the system recovery and restore it to factory settings. Everything was going great, I was putting all my files back into the computer when the frequent crahses started coming up. They would either come up after I tried rebooting the computer or about 5 minutes after I'm logged in and everything. It's where the blue screen comes up and usually either of these messages comes up with of course other text:

IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal

or

Bad_Pool_Caller

I heard it somehing to do with my drive or something, I'd appreciate any insight and help on this recurring issue. I'm really not that great with computers.

Thanks!

Ok well before I start off, I'd like to say that I have cleared the main annoyances of my problem. I registered here because I still think, however, that I am vulnerable to attacks. The firewall within Spy Sweeper is still picking up and blocking things.

The problem I had before included many different trojans and spyware, that got wrapped into a single download my sister got. Apparently she doesn't know not to open 21kb .exe files...

The precautions I've taken so far were as follows:
1. Turned off my internet, I knew a trojan would likely redownload itself until all of its virus and spyware files were removed. I put my internet back on when I thought this was the case.

2. Did a scan with AVG Anti-Virus Free, and it was unable to remove most of what it found... What remained, I was able to delete by finding manually with the help of the AVG logs. (Details about viruses will be below)

3. Did a scan with WebRoot Spy Sweeper, it found a lot of things and got rid of them. (Details about this will be below)

4. Found some IE plugins that didn't belong with the Spy Sweeper's Browser Helper Objects section and removed them. For the first time after doing that, I finally stopped having a hijacked homepage.

Anyway, the problems were as follows:
1. Homepage was jacked by one of a million different "your pc is insecure" programs that tried to sell me on scams. This one took me to uptodateprotection(dot)com (don't want to make a link), as well as syssecurityp... Read more

Additionally, 2 more of the places my firewall has blocked are 216.80.7.64 and "OWNUSA(dot)INFO" (used caps).

Hey everybody!

I recently managed to get my computer loaded with a number of different viruses. To make a long story short, I downloaded/ran an .exe program that I later found out was full of viruses/keyloggers.

I ran a bunch of scans (Malwarebytes, Avast, McAfee, then after I uninstalled McAfee, Kaspersky. Now everything seems to be back to normal. It might just be me, but my computer still seems a tiny bit slower than it was before all this happened (I'd like to put emphasis on the possibility that it could just be me being cautious). I'm also not sure if there are any keyloggers left, so I would really appreciate it if you guys could look through my logs or not to see if I'm clean.

Known [previous?] Viruses: Right after I opened up that deadly .exe file, my links from the google results page started taking me to RANDOM pages, with nothing to do with what I searched for. Shortly after, EVERY program that I would open up would have a few "error messages" before it, with just little pop up windows saying "Error C:/blahblah", and only after I exited out of 2 or 3 of those, would the program would open.
Also, I ran a virus scan the a couple nights back after I infected my computer, and when I looked at it in the morning, "Windows Police Pro" was up. Knowing this was a fake program, I closed out of it and deleted it via HKEYblah, and the task manager (and I also deleted the WPP files on my local disk). Next morning, it was back aga... Read more

So, my laptop has been freezing. But not exactly randomly. I can run AIM for roughly 5-10min without a freeze-up (aka, nothing works/opens, but I can still move the mouse). OR I can open up firefox and it will run no problems on about half of the sites/forums I usually browse. And lastly, I have tried to scan the computer several times, but it freezes up almost exactly halfway through (three times now), and then I can press the "Quarantine" button and it will freeze again halfway through deleting what's there (just tracking cookies).

I'm one of those people with a secondary computer, one for gaming, one for everything else. My laptop is that everything else computer, and it's quite annoying having to alt-tab out of my precious games. Worst case, I may resort to re-formatting.

If you need anymore information, I'd be happy to give it. I don't know the exact specs of the computer, as I really never cared what they were, being my secondary computer, and I can't open the system info without it freezing, so I did the best I could copying specs from a website then changing what I remembered. But it's a Dell Inspiron 1501, and you can look it up yourself if the below specs isn't enough information, or I might be able to help out.

Have you tried a different power connector on the hard drive? Also try entering the hard drive parameters manually in the BIOS.

Good luck.

Kilowatt

On a side note, it is possible that the CMOS battery is dead. On some older machines if the battery goes the BIOS won't detect the hard drive.

This error message appears after Windows XP tries to load.

"Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000135 (0x00000000 0x00000000).

I've tried rebooting in Safe Mode and Debugging mode. This message still appears. I've tried cleaning the inside, dusting it, putting a fan at it, and plugging it into different power sources. Still won't work.

I recently cleaned out a few viruses (VBS Solow and its variants), and this occurred after turning the computer on a few hours later.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

ok, 3 days ago my computer was working completely fine. that night i downloaded a zip file for a video. the next morning my comp told me that i needed to install "important updates" [which i think was just the windows sp2] and when the computer restarted i needed to install the latest version of java so i let that install and update.

then after all the updates were installed my computer started acting weird. i couldnt open pages like myspace.com, socialvibe.com, or my online school which is flvs.net, i also can't open pages where there are multiple images. i've tried to uninstall everything that updated so it was back to the way it was, but my browsers are unable to download and they're still unable to open myspace and the other sites. i use opera as my main browser, firefox when opera doesn't work, and chrome as my last resort. but i also have safari and IE installed but im unable to use them

i've tried to do a system restore to 3 days ago but it says the only restore point was 8/24/09 at 10:24 am, so that wont work.

so is there a way to make my computer work normally again? all i really want is to be able to download again and open the webpages b/c i REALLY REALLY need my school page to open any help will be much appriciated

Hey guys. I currently have AVG Free Edition 8.0 installed on my computer and my lastest can, which was last night, came up with multiple infections.

Details of My Computer:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
My account is an administator account
AV/AS Program is AVG Free Edition

After AVG detect the infections and attempted to clean the infections, it prompted me to reboot. After reboot the infections re-appeared. I downloaded and installed SpyBot and ran its scan and Immunized my computer but the problem still exists. I seemed to have opened up a hornets nest I guess.

These are the infections AVG is picking up:
Worm/Generic.VSI
PSW/Generic6.BFVH
Dropper.Generic.AINC
Win32/Heur

These infections seem to be infecting my .dll's and .exe's as AVG reports.

Hello,

A little background:

Around a year ago I had signed up for Private Internet Access, which installs the TAP9 driver (OpenVPN I believe). I started to get blue screens on my machine (Win7 Ultimate x64), so I installed it on a 2nd Windows machine (identical OS). Same thing. As soon as I started the VPN, blue screen. I installed VirtualBox VM software, same thing on both machines. After trying various things, I ended up sending the motherboard back to ASRock (It was a Z87 Professional). They found nothing wrong, but I ended up doing a fresh install of Win7 and everything was great for about a year. Then I started having machine lockups and found out that my SSDs (Samsung 840 EVOs) were victim to the slowdowns that a lot of people were complaining about. I tried upgrading the firmware and running their "fix", then the blue screens started to happen again, this time at random times. Removed the drives, did a fresh install onto some WD Black drives, and everything was working fine. I thought the motherboard had finally crapped out as even with the onboard LAN ports, the network icon would end up with a yellow exclamation mark after about 5 minutes of usage. I had to use an add-on card to get it to work, so I decided to just build a pretty much brand new system.

I just built it today:
ASRock Extreme6/ac / Intel i7-5930K (brand new)
32Gb G.skill DDR4 (new)
Samsung 850 Pro (apparently these drives did not have the same problems as the 840s) (new) ... Read more

No one has any ideas either? I am stumped myself how this could happen. I tried connecting to a different router but with the same effect last night. Of course it's going through my FIOS router, but it kind of has to. I might try enabling the onboard Wi-Fi tonight and connecting via my phone's hotspot, I'm that much out of ideas.

But first, you must answer my question.Whats wrong with my computer speakers? Why cant I get sound from them? I tried the help topic about speakers not working. They are also set up correctly. Is my motherboard screwed up? I did have a new power supply put in recently (by pros) so I consider that a possability.

Is your sound onboard or is it PCI or USB?

Alright, I am using Windows Vista.

Since about three days ago I CANNOT logon into Msn Live Messenger nor the online Hotmail.com to check my e-mails.

It seems this problem also occurs when I try to buy things online like Ebay.

Msn Messenger gives me this error code: 80048820 (Extended: 80048439)

I tried all the suggest things in the Help Topic. Nothing worked.

The last suggestion is to :"Reregister the SSL security libraries"

In Windows Vista, click the Start button, and then click in the Start Search box.
Type each of the following commands, and then press ENTER. After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before continuing to the next command.

* REGSVR32 softpub.dll
* REGSVR32 wintrust.dll
* REGSVR32 initpki.dll
* REGSVR32 Rsaenh.dll
* REGSVR32 Mssip32.dll
* REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll
* REGSVR32 Dssenh.dll
* REGSVR32 Gpkcsp.dll
* REGSVR32 Slbcsp.dll
* REGSVR32 Sccbase.dll

When I enter about half of the entries I get an error(The ones in bold):

So should I re-download the missing stuff? I don't understand wintrust because I redownloaded another one and it still doesn't work.

I really need help, hope I was clear enough.

P.S Googling the error code is a waste of time -_-

Okay well the problem is my computer keeps freezing while I play games, directx games to be in specific but i havnt played any non direct x games.

Games I've played NBA live 2005, War3, CS:S, i never seem to freeze playing CS:S so it could be something else.

Another thing that could be taken note as that when I turn on my computer, my comp will freeze when it tests the memory in bios. Like it won't even say 'xxx OK' it'll just freeze. Then I restart and then it'll do it, but this is only sometimes, and ussaully always happens after I freeze during gameplay and have to restart.

I've tried formatting, and it didn't work, I've also tried uninstalling my firewire card that I installed recently which I thought was causing the problem, didn't help either. So anyone got any clues? I ran memtest on 700mb of my 1gb ram and all seems okay.

I've attached my DXDiag if you want to take a look at my system specs.

Answer:My Comp is unstable please help details inside

Sounds like a hardware problem. Bad memory or motherboard. Do you have more than one stick of RAM? If so try running the computer with just one. Some motherboards are picky about which brand and type of RAM you use.

Having a TON of problems with popup ads here the last week or so.

Seems to be OuterInfo and SetTheTrend or something majorly.

Sometimes I'll get a Visual C++ buffer overrun error which shuts down my desktop (goes blank) and forces a reboot.

Getting this error on startup also, if it matters:
c:\windows\system32\ddayv.exe (errors with path/registry/etc)

Running WindowsXP (w/ all updates) and AVG (paid edition).

I'm posting this from safe mode w/ networking as I don't know where else to turn.
I did a sfc scan and it stopped at 57% and I followed online instructions to obtain the sfc.txt. Here are the files unable to be fixed. The 2 corrupted are bcdedit.exe and wucltux.dll

Another thing to note. I've had this Lenovo y580 laptop for about a month and a half now and I've had to use "one key recovery" to wipe everything about 3 times. This thing will work fine for like 2 weeks then out of nowhere all these error messages and applications will start crashing. The HDD and memory health is fine from all scans from lenovo support they performed.

I only have warranty for hardware and I've been on the phone w/ them about a dozen times total. Now they want me to do a clean install by sending in recovery disks which would cost $60. Software warranty is extra $ which I'm very tight on. If I could manually try to fix this it'd be a godsend. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. I also use MSE and malwarebytes so don't think its a virus it must be a flaw in the system. Thanks very much

Answer:SFC Details inside. How do I fix these corrupted files?

Hello JJ, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Here's a clean copy of those files from my system in the ZIP file below. After you extract (drag and drop) them from the ZIP file to your desktop and unblock them, the TIP box below will explain how to replace them in your C:\Windows\System32 folder.

   Tip
You will need to take ownership and set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full Control" of the original file in your current installation before you will be allowed to replace it with the extracted copy.

If the system file is in use and you are unable to replace it with the extracted copy, then: Open a Command Prompt at boot.
Do steps 4B to 4D in this tutorial first to verify the drive letter of your Windows 7 drive. It's not always C: at boot.
Type in the command below to copy and replace the original file with the extracted replacement file.
Copy /Y "full path of extracted replacement file" "full path of original Windows 7 system file"
For example:
If the extracted replacement uDWM.DLL is on my desktop, then I would use type this in the command prompt at boot and press enter.

Copy /Y "C:\Users\User-name\Desktop\uDWM.dll" "C:\Windows\System32\uDWM.dll"

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Answer:My Graphics are Fawked!.. Help.. More details inside.

Did you uninstall the previous cards drivers ? You could also try uninstalling and re-installing the new cards drivers. Also make sure the graphics card your using is selected as the default device.
I imagine you have enough RAM to not be causing problems.
You could also try installing the latest version of Nvidia Physx from their website.
