Solved: permission denied, Win7

Question: Solved: permission denied, Win7

Every day I have another folder or file that won't open because "I" dont have permission. It is getting daily more files forbidden to open. Now I can't even see my own pictures. I never had a problem on any version of Windows until Win7.
I have tried everything I could read up from Google but nothing helps. I just don't understand what to really do to see my files. I am the only one on this computer. I have Kaspersky, run Malwarebytes nearly daily and SuperantiSpyware. I have Malwaresearch so I never open anything that is not green. Nothing is ever found. It does not matter if the folder or files is on the laptop or on an external drive.

What is it that I don't understand how to take ownership of my files? I have not changed anything on the system. Also many of my pictures suddenly refuse to be shown, it says either they are corrupted or too large. I have no problem to see them on the XP laptop. All I want is to delete double files and pictures. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there, sorry if you can't understand me because English is not my main language. I just purchased a SSD(Plextor PX-128M5Pro ATA Device) few days ago and I am currently using it as my main drive. I have my operating system(Windows 7 Ultimate x64) installed in the SSD and named it C: Drive.. I have another 500gb HDD connected to my pc and I am currently using it as storage to store my other files as my SDD is only 128gb. It all went well and I was satisfied with the speed of starting up my windows as the system files are all installed in the SSD. I also installed a few games(Dota2, Skyrim etc) into the SSD, everything worked fine and I was able to play my games very smoothly, however today what happened was after I restart my pc, the SSD denied me from accesing my games and I realize I do not have permission to write/modify the files that are installed in the SSD folders. I am the only user of this PC and apparently I am the only Administrator as well. I tried to change my permission on that folder(Program files x86) but I failed, the system wouldn't allow me to modify it. Right now I can't execute any games or programs I installed into my SSD. This is the error message shown when I tried to launch my Steam(Dota2).

I tried system restore, but it didn't work, did anyone else came across this problem?

Can somebody please help me as I do not have a lot knowledge on PC troubleshooting , I need a step-by-step guide to solve this problem. Your help is much appreciated

Answer:Win7 installed in SSD, facing permission denied problems.

Hi zhenglah, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Above pasted error is of Steam, which is used to buy and download games. Is it possible for you to uninstall Steam and install it to some other drive? If this helps well and good. Else, you can follow the link. It gives a complete procedure on how to install Win 7 on SSD.

I get a \\computer1\folder not accessible message when selecting via explorer. \\computer1 works fine but when I add any of the displayed folders, I get a permisssion access error message. When I select any folder after typing \\computer1\folder in the address box of Explorer, I cannot display its properties as I can with \\computer2. I need this in order to find out why access permission is granted.

I installed XP on a friend's computer onto a fresh hard drive, leaving his old one on the same IDE channel (it's an old computer), but I just made one master and one slave.

When we went to try and move over his user folder from the old hard drive, it gave us the ol' 'Permission Denied'. I'm being told by a few of my other tech friends that you need to set the security permission for the folder, but I don't really know if that's the solution. I activated the Security tab on all folders, but I haven't tried to mess with it because I don't rightly know what to do.

If anyone has a solution so my friend can get his files off his old user folder, I would be very grateful.

Thanks, guys.

Hello everyone!

I come here with a "bug" that is really really starting to cause problems.

Firstly, I would like to direct you to this thread.

I asked for help on another forum and well you can see what we went through, however they were not able to completely solve the problem.

I've done some quick tests, and it has basically ended up being that whenever an exe file is involved, Windows will go crazy with permissions or something.

The behaviour is pretty much that I try to delete a folder with exe files in it, and it will tell me that I do not have permission to do so. If I go inside the folder, I can delete the files no problem. Once they're gone, I can delete the folder.

But other instances are that when I try to delete some files, the file will remain, but it won't be there, my computer will say that I need to specify the correct path. Then after a few minutes, the file will actually disappear.

This has become quite a nuisance, because for example, I need to run Punkbuster so I can play some games. Punkbuster runs 2 services, PnkbstrA.exe and PnkbstrB.exe

PnkbstrB.exe is created by PnkbstrA.exe when a game is launched and it's updated on-the-fly. This is a problem, since my system will then deny access to PnkbstrB.exe, so A can't delete/update or do anything to the file for a few minutes, and I'll just end up being kicked in-game because I don't have B.

If I go into the Syswow64 folder, B is there, but you can'... Read more

Since installing Windows 8, I have been having sporadic problems with access denied. Examples follow:

PIMEX is a Personal Information Manager that I have been using through several generations of Windows. When I first converted to Windows 8, this program worked with no problems. Now, however, when I try to open the program, I get the message "PIMEX database could not be opened. Error message: permission denied". If I use the Control Panel to uninstall the program, and then reinstall the program, I am able to open it normally and work with it and use all functions. Once I close the program, however, and try to open it again, I once again get permission denied.

PaperPort is a program that manages scanned images. The program can scan either photos or text documents. If text is selected, the program creates a PDF file that the user names. These scanned files are then stored in PaperPort folders. When I try to display one of these files, PaperPort invokes PDF Viewer Plus (included with the package), and I get the message access denied. If I try to use the Windows 8 Reader to display the file, I get a "Sorry, can't display this file message". Likewise, I cannot display the file using Adobe software.

I have a HP Photosmart Premium printer which also is a scanner. If I use the HP Solution Center to scan a text document, I am able to scan the file without problems, but when I try to Finish and write the file to my hard drive, I have the same permissions problem ... Read more

I'm sure I'm missing something right under my nose but cant figure it out. Can someone please help Thanks

First homegroup is primarily designed for win 7 only networks and uses IPv6. Sometimes homegroup has connectivity issues.

You can test this by setting up a new network connection using workgroup. If it works you can then disable IPv6 and kill homegroup

I would do a scan but obviously that doesn't open either.

Question: Permission denied!

Hello all.

I had a corrupted profile on Vista and when I tried to remove it, it removed the user from my laptop, but not the user folder - which contained about 4 GB of data.

I have tried to remove the folder but I've been denied permission. I have logged on as the Administrator account and it shows that I have full control over the folder - yet it still denies me access.

I really need to get rid of this folder to free up space.

Can someone please tell me how to do it, as it is really driving me up the wall !

Answer:Permission denied!

I'm not sure if it will but have you tried managing the permission of the file?
So you give rights to all the accounts.

Right click folder/file -> security tab -> then look around there and give full permission on other accounts & adding to admin group if it isn't already.

Question: Permission denied

Windows 7 ultimate pro. Plenty of hard drive space. 16 G ram. okay now the problem. Had a crash. Hard drive died. Installed new one . Now some of the files I transferred over from backups is denying me permission to open them. I keep getting messages that access is denied, that I don't have permission. the ONLY user on this computer is me. I am the administrator and that is the account I use. I have gone into the file properties and removed the read only...but it does not stay removed. I close open again and it is back as it was. I go into the file properties and into the permissions and I have all the permissions needed but Special. That stays grayed out. HOW do I change this so ALL my files are accessible. I have this show up with pictures as well.. as my raw files and the different formats of my digitizing software. Most are okay but the few that are doing this are ones I really need.
Any help?

Answer:Permission denied

You could try to take ownership of the files. Just a little batch code (*.bat):

@echo off &setlocal
set "folder=C:\wherever"
takeown /f "%folder%" /r /d y
icacls "%folder%" /grant administrators:F /t

Change the path in line 2 to where the files are placed. The script works recursively for all files in all sub folders. Surely you have to right-click and "run as administrator".

I am having a problem opening a Microsoft Access database accdb file on my D: drive. It was working fine until recently when I upgraded to Windows10/Office 2016. Now all I get is : "File permission denied".
Bizarrely all the other Access databases in the same folder are completely accessible - apart from this single one.

I have tried changing the security permissions, changing ownership, logging on as Administrator - nothing seems to work.

The only thing I can think of is that on Windows 7 my user account was just "Nick" and now on Windows 10 it is "Nick B" with an email address associated with it.

EDIT: It's not actually solved, but has now become a Win Media Centre issue. I will post there.

I have tried to delete several folders containing recorded DVDs. Most of them went, but there are a half dozen that can not be deleted.

The structure is:
- DVDName#1
- Videots
- Audiots
- DVDName#2
- Videots
- Audiots

These were in WMC Movies Library, by using their parent folder f:\dvds. However I have now removed that from the library. All the successfully deleted folders were in the same parent folder.

I am told I need permission to delete them. I actually am logged in as admin. I checked in Properties/security n their parent folder and I have all permissions except Special, which is greyed out for all listed users.

However when I try to look at security for any of the individual DVD folders, I am told I do not have permission to even _see_ the security settings

I then saw that the folders were read-only. I attempted to uncheck that, but again was told I needed admin privileges.

Given that I am admin, what's going on here?

EDT: I am also the owner of the parent folder, but cannot see or alter the owner of the sub-folders.

Any help most appreciated.

Answer:Permission denied to administrator

If there's nothing in f:\dvds that you want to keep, just delete the parent folder (f:\dvd) If you want some folders in f:\dvd but not others - you might have to take ownership. There's a tutorial that sets up a context menu Take Ownership.

Good luck

Might be worth just checking out your files by going to START>RUN and with your XP disk in the drive typing sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Did anything noticable occur just prior to this happening?

What happens if you use another browser?

Did you empt out cookies and Temp files and reset the browser to 'default'?

Answer:Permission denied even Admin

You're probably not the owner.

Paste this in notepad and save it as a .reg file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
@="Take Ownership"

@="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"
"IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F"

@="Take Ownership"

@="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"
"IsolatedCommand"="cmd.exe /c takeown /f \"%1\" /r /d y && icacls \"%1\" /grant administrators:F /t"

Run that and now you'll have a "Take Ownership" option in the right-click menus. Take ownership of all of that.

Anyway, i'm looking at their site at the moment. Have you configured it for use behind a firewall? I assume you have.

blimey, I was going to search their discusion list, but there's 120 pages of it!

This is the email in which to subscribe of no joy here, or if you want to keep up with it [email protected]

As FTP isn't my strong field, and DOS certainly ain't, have a look at this:

okay, its not the exact same thing but you can add your own mail address, plus it tells you some FTP commands.

I will delve deeper if you want. Something new to learn.

I posted a screenshot, anybody know why i can't access this.

Answer:Permission denied even with admin?

Because you probably don't have access.

But you can take ownership and assign the permissions you need.

Hi, i have this problem that i cannot solve. i know why it happened but i was kinda trying stuff without really knowing what i was doing, so now i turn to this forum cause i tried all i could think/find and i still cant solve my mistake.

I had two HD,
C: with XP pro sp3 and linux (dual boot)
D: formated in ntfs with all extra data (songs, video, reports, receipt etc..)

When i had these two working normally, i needed to restrict the access of the second HD (the D to only one computer on the network so i messed around with the permission. I ended up deleting the whole list;
it was looking like this (under the security tab of the HD properties)
"User" X\username"

So i deleted these, it gave me problems , then i found how to re-take owner ship. but i only re-added

"User" X\username

i could then again access my files on the D: . but i still couldnt share my files as i wanted for some reason. so i decided to re-install windows...big mistake!!

I formated the C:, re-installed windows on it, no problem with that. But now i see the second HD in windows explorer as RAW and access is denied. Meaning the HD is detected and listed there, but the used space and total space amount is not showing, if i click properties, instead of NTFS its says RAW. If i try to open it to explore the content, i get an access denied message.

I tryied chkdsk it did some things (looked like it was changing stuff, but i cant see a... Read more

ok, so i 'took ownership' of the folder and that worked. is this what i have to do for every folder on this pc? that seems strange since i am the administrator and only user.

Hi, I posted this in the XP forum, and someone replied with the suggestion that I run "sfc /scannow" and if it didn't work to post in the security forum.

When I start up the computer I have no trouble, but after about 10 minutes or so, whenever I try to open a new programs, I recieve an error message that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. Although my problem isn't extremely urgent, I would appreciate a hasty response because my anxiety is growing.

I've been using Windows Vista since I bought this computer, so my OS has never been changed.

I recently had to resort to restoring my computer, but I first excersised the priveledge of backing up my picture and video files; these are very precious to me. So, the restore went perfectly, as did the backing up of my files, except now when I try to view them, a message pops up in Windows Photo Gallery (since that's the program I use) that states, "Photo Gallery can't open this picture because you do not have permission to access the file location." Any other program I use gives a similar message, with the same results. Also, everytime this happens my taskbar disappears...

Thank you,
Krista Jackson

P.S.> I attempted to fix this problem on my own by denying SYSTEM permissions. It is a Built-in Security thing, so I figured it wouldn't deny Administrator or my User (I am the administrator) access. I then switched ownership from Administrator to Krista (my User). My actions disappointingly came with no results, but now I just hope I didn't mess anything important up; when I try to allow SYSTEM permission, I cannot.

Answer:denied permission to file location

Hi Krista

Since you recently ran a restore:

1) Backup any other personal data you've added since onto CD-R/DVD-R, or USB key.
2) Run your restore again. [I'm recommending this step to undo the "SYSTEM" permission changes you made -- since I'm not sure how extensively you applied the changes -- and this is a simple fix]
3) Create a Temporary folder (or two) [each with a unique name!] into which you can copy your photo and video backups.
4) Scan the folder(s) for malware, just to be safe.
5) Gain ownership of the temporary folder(s) you created for your photos & videos
--- 5a) Make sure you are logged in as a user with administrative rights.
--- 5b) In Windows Explorer, browse to the location of the folder you created to hold the photo/video backups
--- 5c) Right-click the folder, and select "Properties"
--- 5d) Select the "Security" tab
--- 5e) Select the "Advanced" button
--- 5f) Select the "Owner" tab
--- 5g) Select the "Edit" button
--- 5h) If asked by Vista User Account Control, select "Continue"
--- 5i) In the "Change Owner to:" section, select your username ... should it be missing from the list, select "Other users or groups" and find your username.
--- 5j) Look for an option "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and make sure it is selected! (*** this will allow your permissions to be reset for all the photos/videos inside the folder *... Read more

Hi there,

I know there have been a lot of tutorial/tips on how to deal with permission when you need to copy files on Windows 7. I have turned off UAC, take the ownership of the folder and all sub-folders/files ... but still I have not been able to copy quite a few files in one of my folder.

Windows 7 (Ultimate/64bit) pop up a warning box saying that I need a permission from myself to be able to copy those files. If I click Yes, it still won't happen.

Is there any fix to this? Thank you.

Answer:Permission denied to copy my own files

Hello geeks,

So I was going through my Program Files to delete unwanted folders and files but I keep running into this message even after I changed the Permission settings in the Security Properties of the Program Files Folder. My account is set as administrator but it wants me to get administrator permission. Also under "Group or user name" are the TrustedInstaller, System, Creator Owner necessary to have there? One last question, why is there two Administrator usernames "Administrators username/Administrator" and "Users username\Users" because I only have one account on here and I'm the only one that uses it?

P.S. I'm attaching some snapshots of these messages. Thanks everyone.

Answer:Folder Permission Access Denied

What account are you currently logged into on that computer? Its possible that you are logging in as a temp profile that does not have the proper permissions.

The TrustedInstaller, System, and Owner should be in the permissions for those folders so leave those in there.

An easy way to see what profile you are logged in as would be just going to the Downloads folder and verify the path is your actual username and not some Temp profile.

Also it looks as if this computer is part of a domain or all these all local accounts?

Hello, I have been having trouble trying to delete this executable(.exe) file on Windows 10 Pro. It says the following: "'File Access Denied: 'You need permission to perform this action.'" I have had this error message before and I solved it through the file's properties/security tab and re-entering my username/administrator to the Object Name but this did not work. I also tried running the rm command in the windows powershell (admin) but that did not work either. It is nothing important and is only a .exe to a game which was leftover from an uninstall. So I'm lost. Any help would be appreciated!

Also there's a folder called "default" in the listing of users. Is that supposed to be there?

Add "TakeOwn" to your context menu in new installation. Download the .reg file and permit registry merge to occur -

RIGHT-click on the file in question, select "Take Ownership"

c:\users\default - contains the default folders used to create new user accounts. Do not delete it.

Hey there. I have been fighting this issue for four hours and so far it has ruined my morning. I am needing to work on some coding that's due and I'm now four hours behind, because, well, frankly... I can't open it.

I turned on my computer this morning, which is a laptop I just bought last Friday for new years. It ran great all weekend, and the laptop itself isn't the problem. When I started my computer, everything fired up and I immediately when to Notepad++ to work on my code.

Problem is, when I tried to save the file it wanted to save it as a new file. So, I went to the file's location and tried to rename it, and it said I didn't have permission to edit the file. I clicked continue, to give myself permissions to the file I was JUST EDITING last night, and it said I didn't have permission. Clicking "Try Again" 50 times does nothing.

To test this problem, I went to a video game folder and tried to delete a modification, and it did the same exact thing. After that, I tried to delete a sound wav file from my Audacity folder, and it deleted just fine... It seems to be folders only, but even then, it lets me delete some folders.

After my latest restart and Windows Update for lunch hour, I have the same problem but now it gives me a little more information. Now, it says You require permission from DESKTOP-038M48A/RhapidFyre to modify this file

The problem? I'm RhapidFyre.

SO, I did what any technologically inclined programmer would do... Go to the folder's securit... Read more

Answer:Denied permission to open file

You are to take ownership of those files .

Try Take Ownership of file - Vista Forums . Method one (Take Ownership Shortcut) makes it very easy, but if you opt for the method one, use it cautiously .

Dont try to take ownership of the windows folder. It may turn your system in risk .

Hey guys,

I'm having a lot of trouble with downloading a file, and am in desperate need of help. The file that I try to download simply says "Failed" in Firefox; Chrome decides to do nothing at all when attempting to download in that browser, and IE constantly states that I do not have the right permissions to run or save the file.

The thing is I do have the right permisisons. I am the admin, the only user, with Full Control on everything; including IE and the Downloads folder. This permissions issue crops up now and then and I never understand why, how can I possibly add more permissions to "Full Control"?

Dropbox also failed due to permissions. I'm out of ideas since all of my browsers are failing miserably!

Also tried an email via my friend. Extracted file with WinRAR and what a surprise, Access is denied.

Help please, I just want to download and install a program. That's it.

Answer:File Permission Access Denied

This should likely be in the MS / Windows board. The permissions in question are very likely pertaining to the user account. Most likely the user profile or Windows itself is corrupted. You could try creating a new account and adding Admin rights to that account. That's the extent of my Windows profile expertise.

To begin with I hope this is the right forum to present my issue. I've read some post's and cannot make heads or tails of most. I'm not very tecchy. I am running WinXP-Pro (SP3) and have an external HD (372GB). Somehow, the majority of my data (folders and files) on this drive has been moved to a LONG numbered folder and made inaccessible to me. I have paid a couple of online services for tech support and they cannot restore my accessibility to this data.

I am told that someone with a Linux system can access the data on this drive and change the permissions enabling me access again. A Windows based system will not work. They would have to copy and paste the data into new folders. I'm not a tech and really don't know what they are talking about. I am just echoing what was said to me. I don't even know if what I have been told is valid or not. Is there someone here with knowledge of both Windows and Linux that can at least tell me if this is true or not. I don't want to continue wasting my time and money if I'm only spinning my wheels.

What I do know, is that I don't have the money to be spending on services that in the end tell me, "Oh well, we can't help you, but if you go here, they will." This, and only to be played the same tune at the next stop! I don't have the resources to continue paying out and not getting results.

Can someone point me to a service that can help me. What I have been denied access to is very important to me and I am at a loss here. ... Read more

Just got the desktop described below. Inserted a SD camera card into the slot on my Canon MG6120 printer. Opened the folder containing the pix, marked 95% of them, and hit Delete. Get message that I need administrator permission to delete them. I AM the administrator, so don't know why it's telling me this. I looked up how to change permissions in the Properties, but after clicking Properties, no "Security" tab is there, so I can't change anything.

However, I subsequently inserted the card into the card reader on the PC and deleted the pix -- no error message about not having permission. So my question is, why do I not have permission to delete the files from a reader in MY printer which is connected wirelessly to MY PC, but do have permission when it's plugged directly into the PC?

Incidentally, the computer assigns the drive letter Z: to the SD card. Does that have anything to do with my not having administrator access? I also noticed for the first time that I cannot start the computer in Safe Mode. Do a restart, hold down F8, and I'm presented only with a menu asking what device do I want to boot from. ?????????????

Hi guys first time here.

O.k. So I did something stupid. I'm cleaning out my computer and had my old gaming name as my user name, then went to change it to my new name. I think just by renaming the folder if I remember right. It didn't get rid of the name completely, it was still popping up in places. So I go into admin settings and start deleting. OOPS!!! Now my C Drive says access denied! Something else I wanted to do is get rid of the "mirror folders" (if thats what their called) I see no reason to have Library's, User name and there was A 3rd... now it's locked up so I don't remember. All containing the same files and folders.

Anyway, can any one help me get my system back to normal????

I am running Windows 7 ultimate. I currently installed Adobe CS 6 (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator and After effect) after installation suddenly there seems to be some problem with my Documents folder, I have attached a screenshot kindly view it.

When I access "My Documents" folder the My Picture, My Music etc folders are hidden and whenever I try to open them I get an error permission denied but I can access them from the Libraries menu on the left.
Also there is a thumbs.db file getting created, in every folder, even when I insert a pen drive this file is getting created in that too.

After applying the option don't show hidden files, the files are hidden but after I reboot the hidden files are visible again.

I am the only user, never added any other user for the system.

Is this because I installed the Adobe CS 6 or for some other reasons, I am assuming this started after I installed it.
I have ran my anti-virus which is updated but the result was NIL.

Kindly help me out guys.

I am having an issue with my pc not allowing other software within to run/install
It may be due to permissions violations, but I have set them (and the subdirectories) as an administrator user.
I have found I can do some things if I download in any user, but run in safe mode.  But, when I return to the non-safe mode, I cannot do it again...and some things are no longer available.
All this became obvious when a popup taking me to showed up and I could not run McAfee OAS, run SUPERAntispyware free addition and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  Additionally, Windows tries to update every time (with 7 updates) the pc is shut down...even if I start up and shut down immediately after rebooting.
Updating any of the antivirus and antimalware is futile.
How can I start remediation of this problem?

Hi, I have a problem with the UAC and access privileges. I am the administrator on my computer and i accidently set up access control for half of my files (deny access to SYSTEM and administrators). I changed all the settings back, disabled UAC, allowed access to all users and groups and applied those changes to all subfolders and files. However, I'm still getting a message saying i dont have permission to access. I tried changing the ownership but it doesnt apply to every subfolder and I dont wanna go and change the ownership for every single file.

Please help! i need those files!

I don't know why, but I have no access to create or copy files directly in d:\. Creating directory works though. When I want to copy or create for example a txt file, explorer says:

Looking into NTFS rights, I already have all right and write access for d: and I am the owner:

I already tried to take over ownership again and overwrite recursive all rights on d:, without any luck.

Any suggestions whats going on and how to fix it?

Answer:Permission denied to create or copy files in d:\

This is by design, Windows now prevents creating files in a root of a disk, this is to prevent certain types of malware attacks

Recently my laptop got hit with a virus that hijacks all browsers, taking them to ad pages. Also when I try running programs like MBytes,HJT, and Spybot I get a message saying "cannot locate path, device. you may not have permission". I tried in safe mode, same issue. I also ran Mbytes and Spybot off of usb flash drive but after a few seconds of scanning, they close.(unable to run HJT from usb). Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:hijacked browsers/denied permission for programs

Hello, Use this fix, when you see a box that states ?Windows cannot not access the specified device, path, or file. You may have inappropriate permissions to access the item?.Download This FileSave it next to mbam.exe (this file is located in the Malwarebytes Anti-malware home folder). Once done, drag and drop mbam.exe into Inherit.exe. Click OK and attempt to run Malwarebytes Anti-malware once again.Post the MBAM logThe log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.DO NOT post an HJT log here if needed we will ask for it.

Hi All,

I've salved many drives before with out needing to take ownership of the drives when I slaved them in USB or Esata. However, now on windows 7 I get a permission denied and I have to take ownership to see the files. the problem is if I do this I find that it skews the OS on that slaved drive.

I've never had to do this before and still don't have to do it on one of my HD's.

Can anyone explain what is going on here? Why the inconsistency?

I don't want to take ownership and skew up my XP os on that slaved drive.

**Ninja edit**
BTW all drives are in NTFS.... I've never needed permissions because I always though since I'm using the same machine name and user name between all the os's it shouldn't have needed me to take control... does windows 7 look at the GUID for permissions now?

Answer:Windows 7 and slaved drives permission denied.

Try adding your account with full permissions in advanced security (check inherent permissions and apply to sub-folders), but don't take ownership, I think that worked in my situation when I was dual booting Vista and 7.

Hey People, system specsWindows Vista Ultimate, 64 bit, SP2I was playing around with the permissions for one of my secondary drives that holds data e.g videos, mp3s so that my pal couldnt get into them and mess around with it and know it gives me this message everytime i try and access the drive.Location is not available (this appears in the title bar of the error message)I: is not accessible (this appears in the main part of the error message)Access is denied (this appears under the above message in the error message)And there is only an OK button i can press. So here is how this all came about.I right clicked on the drive, selected properties,Clicked on the security tab, clicked on the "users" option under the "Group or user names" section,Clicked on "edit",clicked on the "users" option under the "Group or user names" section, selected "deny" for every box under the "permissions for users" section, clicked apply,an clicked "ok" until the windows were all closed. The drive name was then changed to "Access Denied" after i had done this with no letter assigned to the drive.I went into computer management and assigned a drive letter but still no good.I now right click the drive and select properties and the security tab is no longer there, so i cannot reverse the permissions.I am logged in as an administrator.I have tried to turn off UAC with no luck.I have attempted to create another administrator account and change the permissions from there but no good.So does anyone out there know... Answer:Access denied issue after tweaking permission

Might boot to administrator and try it in safe mode.Make a vista pe disk or barts pe and try to fix it.As you say it is a secondary drive, it might be possible to access from booting to the Vista dvd and use command line repair tools. The MS books all post a warning about deny's. Vista/x64 SP2 up-to-date w/ Cygwin 1.5.25 (yeah super old). This's been bugging me for a bit first time I've ever seen it. I did a defrag (defrag -v -w -f <drive>) while running my daily backup script (Cygwin) and got a Permission denied when doing mv where (I assume doesn't make sense otherwise) one of the files was currently being defragmented.

mv $d:\\.locate\\files-new.txt $d:\\.locate\\files.txt -> EPERM/EACCESS

files-new.txt = just created
files.txt = old, exists

I always thought defrag was low-level and transparent and shouldn't interfere with any operation hence you can run it on live filesystems. That error boggles me :/ Cygwin likes sparse files maybe has something todo with it. Any guru can shed some light? Thanks.

BTW the backup script is 3-4 years old never had problems with it but I've never used it with defrag running at the same time.

Hi -
I'm having problems trying to delete some fonts that I installed. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm the only user (and the administrator) on the computer.

When I try to delete a font - it tells me "You need permission to perform this action".

I have already tried the following (based on thorough search for help everywhere):
(1) turned off UAC
(2) tried to change the folder properties of the windows/fonts folder but that option does not exist for that folder
(3) have tried right-clicking on the font to change the permissions for the font I want to delete - it says "Unable to save permission changes"

AHA!!!!!! I finally solved the problem - in the FONT PROPERTIES/ADVANCED SECURITY/OWNER: I had to first change the OWNER of the file to Administrator (instead of Trusted Installer) and then I could change the permissions. Problem solved! But will post here anyway in case anyone else runs into this problem.

This is a new computer. I connected to external USB drives to this computer. One is a traditional 1TB hard drive and the other is a 240 gb ssd drive. My problem is that on the traditional drive, I can not access one of my files. On the SSD drive, I can see the drive listed by can not access. I get a message that states I do not have permission to access. These work fine on my old HP computer but for some reason do not work on this new machine. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I have just had a new PC installed and although it is behaving itself fairly well, I noticed that several of my programs are opening in a "normal window", whereas I prefer them to be maximized. So I follow the basic routine of right-clicking the appropriate desktop shortcut, then "Properties" and clicking on "Run Maximized".
But then I receive a message "Access Denied - you will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings"! As I am the only user of the PC, what does this mean, and how can I avoid this message?

HI there! I am new to this website and so ask forgiveness for any mistakes I do make.
I'm running a windows 7 home basic 64-bit system on a laptop and have had it for about 2 years now, evverything has been working perfectly fine, up until yesterday where all of a sudden, I couldn't access my files and it wouldn't allow me to intall new programs where it loads up an error saying ''Unable to write file, access denied error code 5'', also it wouldn't allow me to open any of my files, saying I do not have the correct permissions to access these folders although I'm using the administrator account (which is the only one on this laptop). My antivirus [AVG 2013] does not open up anymore for some reason and cannot be uninstalled, I had two other ''pc-friendly'' programs which worked alongside AVG perfect, Advanced system care 7 and Baidu PCFaster, both of them were deleted I think, I can not open them and I tried re-installing both, got the ''Cannot write file'' error. That about sums up the mess I'm in, appreciate your help a lot!

By far the simplest fix is to use System Restore to roll back Windows to a point in time when everything when your computer was functioning correctly. Hi there, hoping someone can help...

I've eventually managed to get a dual boot system going. I've installed Win7 on one hard drive and Win XP Pro on another.
I've still got to figure out how to get a dual boot menu going, but in the meantime I press the F10 key during Boot-up of the machine and I suppose its my Bios that allows me to decide which hard drive to boot from. Both boot-ups in either XP or Win7work fine.

However, when I boot in Win7 I can't seem to save files that I have edited i.e. I can open up the file and make chnages, but as soon as I try to save and replace, I get an access denied message, although I've got admin rights. However on some drives I can edit without a problem. Even on the same drive, for example the c: drive, I can edit and save files in the My docyments folder, but can for example not edit and save files in the Program Files (x86) folder on the same drive ....

If I boot in XP, this problem does not occur and all files are accessbile and can be edited and saved ...

Any ideas? Any help would be extremely appreciated ...

I built a new desktop and did a clean Windows 7 64-bit install. I hooked up the hard drive from my old PC, which had XP on it, so I could copy all the files over to my new hard drive. But when I try, I keep getting errors that I don't have permission to access the file or copy the file. I was trying to do it for specific folders, but then I still needed to go through the process to ask for permission for each individual file inside the folder! So I changed the security settings for the entire drive by right clicking E:/, going to security and changing the permission for "Everyone" and checked the box "full control," which then checks all the boxes. And yet, when I try to copy folders from my old My Documents, it's still giving me error messages. I don't want any security settings at all. No one else is ever going to use this computer. But at the very least I need to copy these files. Please tell me how to do this, thanks in advance.

Answer:Permission denied to access/copy files from my old computer

Hello cutiepie

Try to take ownership look here Take Ownership Shortcut
Apply it to all folders then try to copy it !!

All three users, Barb, Bob, Brian, in the advertising department received 'denied access' and 'you need permission to perform this action' while attempting to access the share folder-files 'srv-adv' on the domain server 2008 r2.

In the share security I gave Barb, Bob, Brian and the administrator full control. That did not work. I received 'denied access' and 'you need permission to perform this action'.
However after I added and gave Everyone full control the three workers in advertising were able to access the shared folders and files. I thought by given just the advertising workers full permission that would have been sufficient. Not so, I had to add Everyone with full permissions.

I then created an 'advertising' group and added to that group Administrator, Barb, Bob, Brian and gave them full permissions.

I am stuck at this point. Do I remove from the share 'srv-adv' each user and then add the group 'advertising' to the share? What I want to do is to have the users added to advertising group unfettered access to the share 'srv-adv'.

And because I encountered 'denied access' and 'you need permission to perform this action' what "member of" do I add to advertising group without having to add 'Everyone' with full permissions?

PS I created only the group 'advertising' and did not create a 'group policy'. I don't know is that makes a difference.

Answer:you need permission to perform this action with access denied at share

Go through Setup Shared Folder in Windows Server 2012 to see if sharing is setup properly.

However, check whether these users/group has sufficient NTFS permissions too (security tab)

Hi all,

We have a problem here. We use Windows 98 and vista business edition in a network.

We want to use vista pc as a file share for a vb application. That is we want to keep the access database file on the vista and applications on win 98 (SE) machines.

But we are unable to do that.

We tried the following:

1. Accessing from vista to either XP or 98 is perfectly OK. Copying, editing, deletions everything is possible.

2. Accessing from 98 to XP is perfectly OK as above.

3. Accessing from 98 to vista, following problems are observed

(Drive on Vista used for file share is FAT 32):

* Pinging is OK

* Shared folders on vista are visible

* When double clicking on the folder, 98 system hangs

* Public folders on Vista are accessible sometimes. But not stable.

* Files of tiny size can be opened/copied from 98

Can you test it and help us.

We would like to use the Vista PC as a file share in the network.

Hi there,

I recently backed up all my data onto an external drive before factory resetting my laptop. However now when I try and access the files on the external I get a message saying the following:

Now I have been able to remove this message for the initial folder, however all subfolders and files then give me the same message.

I have tried right clicking the folder > properties > security and then adding my new user to the permissions list and clicking all the check boxes below but however this only works the the current folder and no subfolders.

Looking for a way to avoid having to do this 1000 times.

Answer:Denied external drive permission after factory reset

Are you on an administrator account? If not, getting on one should probably fix that problem.

Also try disabling UAC. Go to Start and click on your user picture in the top right of the start menu. From that window, click on Change User Account Control settings.Drag the slider all the way down and restart your computer to get it to turn off.

If none of this helps, try accessing your hard drive with your computer in safe mode.
