Constant Freezing High Disk Usage

Question: Constant Freezing High Disk Usage

I run a system I built back in 2009 with the following specs:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 3069 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470, 1280 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 610476 MB, Free - 178886 MB; G: Total - 476936 MB, Free - 138294 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P5Q DELUXE
Antivirus: Norton Security Suite, Updated and Enabled

FYI, I have 4 GB installed, but I've never been able to get that last GB of RAM to be used (and I have made sure that my BIOS is set up to use it).

As time has gone on my computer has more and more moments when it just locks up; and it is also taking longer and longer to log in/switch users and for programs to open. My memory usage generally is below 70%, but I regularly get high disk usage warnings from Norton. Also the computer will freeze up when Firefox goes to certain sites like Comcast.net.

I've been trying to figure this out for a very long time and have gotten nowhere. I really appreciate your help.

Daniel

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

Was wondering if one of you guys would be kind enough to offer me some guidance on my laptop.

For about 2 weeks i have noticed the general speed of my laptop has decreased and the internet in particular has become very slow even sometimes freezing which leads me to having to restart my laptop in order to continue what i was doing.

I have looked at the cpu usage and it is at a constant 80-100% which i'm sure isn't right.

Have tried many virus removals however to no avail.

any suggestions will be met with great appreciation

Regards

Daryl

I've recently built a computer for a friend a few months back. They did encounter some high CPU temperatures that warranted getting a new CPU cooler which has fixed the temperature problems. Lately she's had problems with freezing, which she notes was the same time the disk usage skyrocketed. It's more often when she is gaming. The PC would freeze, and sometimes recover. Other times required a forced restart. She has a fresh install of Windows 10. I'm not sure where the problem lies. I also suspect that her hardware may have been damaged from the overheating issue, but I'm not qualified to make that kind of judgement.

These are her specs:
CPU: AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper EVO 212
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-D3H Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 285 2GB WINDFORCE 2X Video Card

Hi,

I've a new computer, bought in January this year. Things have been fine for the most part, but recently I've been experiencing intermittent periods of extremely high disk usage, lasting for about 20-30 seconds during which my computer is completely unresponsive - including the taskbar.

Opening up the Task Manager/Performance Monitor supposedly gives the culprit:

But I don't know how to go further. I've tried disabling all error reporting and solution-checking in the control panel, but I still experience this problem.

I suspect something bad going on in the background; any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I have Toshiba Satellite C660-A235. Some days ago my machine was ok suddenly, fan is constantly running fastly every time and cpu consume minimum of 50 % . If i want to run some programs that require high cpu consumption the system is turn off automatically.

I have installed latest version of BIOS and all other drivers and installed new window 7.. Plzz help me

Answer:Satellite C660 - Constant high speed CPU fan and high usage of CPU

Hi

I think some kind of background processes stress the CPU.
You could check this in task manager-> processes tab
Click on CPU column to get the processes ordered and to show all the processes which stress the CPU.

Closing or disabling such processes can help to reduce the CPU performance.

I find that my CPU usage is high nearly all the time. I'm not sure the root cause but I have tired disabling as many non essentials. I have been through the "slow pc/browser" section and it hasn't seemed to have helped.

So up until this morning my Windows 10 desktop has been performing really well. When the machine is idle the CPU use is only in the 1-3% range.

For some reason my idle CPU use is now CONSTANTLY 30-40% (even after a reboot)! Task manager says its "Service Host: Local System (15)". If I expand this process in task manager it lists:

Why is this happening all of a sudden? Can anyone help please? I have all Windows Updates installed and I run an i7-3770 CPU.

My machine is now slow/sluggish with 30-40% being hogged by these services!

PS: I don't have any Malware installed as I run Malwarebytes Premium and the scan comes back clean. Some goes for a full anti virus scan.

Answer:Extremely high constant CPU usage

If you have ever or currently have more than 1 antivirus programs (excluding MBAM completely), please double-check if you still do, and uninstall all but one of them.

Run this: DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums
Then this: SFC Command - Run in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums (RUN ONCE MORE AFTER A COMPUTER RESTART IF IT FINDS ANY FILES IT HAD TO FIX.

Check to see if anything else is running high.. check startup in Task Manager and disable anything that you don't want starting up with the OS, and check details to see if multiple instances of NON-windows processes are running, such as java, etc. For example, Java on my computer created more than 45 individual processes and slowed my PC to a crawl, had to restart to clear it, and updated java.

Update your computer, and any applications you have on it. Let MBAM and/or your antivirus program do a FULL scan (i.e. NOT a smart scan).

I bought a new laptop about 4 weeks ago and ever since I've had it I keep getting high CPU alerts. I've been watchng my CPU usage and it's almost always running high, over 40%, sometimes even when Internet Explorer isn't open! I've done lots of research and have tried all the suggestions I can find. Such as, disabling just about everything on my start up, running virus/malware scans, multiple times, and they come up clean every time, looked through my files and made sure nothing odd showed up, from from what I can tell everything there looks fine. I'm out of ideas, and searching the web hasn't helped me at all. Is there anyone out there that can help me solve this problem? It's driving me crazy!!! HELP!!

Answer:Constant high CPU usage alerts..tried everything..HELP!!!

Have you looked at task manager and/or resource monitor to see what particular processes are using the CPU?

How puny is your CPU--make and model?

Your specs say you have an AMD E-450 hard drive. As far as I know, AMD does not make hard drives.

We need more complete and accurate hardware info.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

i got help in this forum and solved my problem

Hi,

Approximately 12 months ago I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio F60 6GB laptop.

When in explorer using facebook games etc, I am constantly getting an alert from my Norton advising that there is High CPU Usage.

I have been asking around locally and was advised to remove Norton as this could be the problem. I am not keen to do this as my subscription is still current.

I was also told the other day that it is a common problem with Toshiba laptops using 'Explorer' and that I should use 'Mozilla Firefox' instead which would rectify the problem.

I am in the process of organising this.

Can you please advise if this is a regular problem with Toshiba laptops and your opinion on the above options to try and rectify this problem.

It doesn't really seem to effect my computer, it goes slower and when in task manager it is contantly fluctuation between 5 - 35%

I look forwards to your response.

Thanks,

Melissa

Answer:Qosmio F60 - Constant High CPU Usage Alerts

Hi

This is not a notebook problem buddy?
The Norton antivirus is a good antivirus program but it use a lot of hardware resources and from my experience locks the CPU.

I removed this antivirus software and now I?m using Avira Antivir and the avast Free Antivirus software. Both are freeware software.

But I still use Internet Explorer. Of course I installed also the firefox and chrome. All these three internet browsers are great.

My computer has consistently high CPU usage often at 100%. I am running Mcafee Security Center on my computer (rest of the specs about my computer are below). When Mcafee begins looking for updates and installing them (automatically around start up) that is when anything I'm doing on the computer either slows down to a crawl and can become unresponsive.

The processes that seem to be taking over my CPU are:

mcshield.exe (up to 99% CPU and 130,000 K memory usage. prevents my other programs from running smoothly)
mcinsupd.exe
mcods.exe

Even at startup the Mcafee icons take a long time (atleast a couple of minutes) to load in the bottom right corner of my screen by the time. And then the update process seems takes long as well (sometimes as long as 30 minutes). Its always taken this long, but recently I lost some valuable information due to my computer becoming unresponsive so that's when this became personal.

Is it possible to limit the CPU usage by Mcafee so that my other programs aren't affected noticeably?

Thanks in advance. I really appreciate the time and efforts of all of you here.

I kept getting freezes when (it seems like) I used alot CPU, graphics card or RAM activity. It often starts warning me with screen going black for a second, then going back to normal, windows graphics sticking on screen or icons turning black. Ending in a freeze with what seems like a video issue (screen distorted horizonticaly, loads of pink cubes or just a basic freeze).

The freezes came a while back, whitout any real reason it seems. Plus it seems to freeze when I scroll in internet explorer with loads of flash stuff (not in firefox o_O), and also freezes quiet quickly in maya, a 3D graphics program. So generally I guessed just heavy use of anything

Now to try to solve it I've installed pc probe, which kept giving warnings of around and occasionally below 2.9v for the 3.3v rail. I've tried a clean version of windows xp which didn't work, changed things in my bios a bit, with no effect, and in the end removed some ram (I believe I read here that this could be an issue aswell).

Having removed 512 ram, the problem seems to be solved, but it doesn't really matter which one of the two I remove, and in which slot I put them. As long as I use 512mb instead of 1gig. Now pc probe hangs around 3,1v, and no weird video freezes so far. Anyone that can give me any info or suggestions on this would be great, thanks!

Hi Guys.

For the last 2 weeks , as soon as my PC gets switched on the CPU usage jumps to around 52% and Physical Memory to around 58%. I only have one program running and thats Internet Explorer 8.

Anyone know why it is so high? A virus or malware perhaps? I've tried running Spyboy Search & Destroy aswell as Malware Anti-Malware bytes, but no joy. As the CPU is so high, the computer gets very hot with the heatsink (fan) going into overdrive which makes an absulute racket. It doesn't effect the performance much as its a high spec PC but its now getting a tad annoying.

I've also noticed that at night time the internet speed goes down considerably, i'm on a 10Mb connection and the last few nights speeds have been like no better than the old 56k days! Someone perhaps using my machine to attack other machines/users.

Any help would be grand.

Edit: The list of things I have done but the problem is still the same-

Spybot Search & Destroy
Avast Anti-Virus Scan
Malware Bytes Anti Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
Ad-aware wouldn't work, getting a 'System Error 1814'
My sincere apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Thanks alot

I have run multiple system scans with multiple virus protection programs. A few trojans were found in some downloaded mp3 files and deleted. Something must have slipped by, it is getting worse everyday. Now about every 1-5 minutes any applications I have running will minimize or be deselected as if something is being loaded or I am clicking on the windows taskbar. I don't know how else to describe it. Even right now as I am typing this message I have to keep clicking back into the text box to continue typing. When I first upgraded my RAM in this computer I could have World of Warcraft loaded sitting in Shattrath with hardly any lag, while in the background running Morpheus, Firefox with 8 tabs each different websites, AND have Warcraft 3 up in running as well, all the while running very smoothly and not even capping out my dual core cpu's at 75%. Now if I even try to open a website while playing World of Warcraft I risk bumping my CPU usage to 100% and the whole system freezes and sometimes I get a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD has occured multiple times so far). This poor performance has been going on for about 5 months now, haven't had much time and money lately to do anything though. 1.  "Execution Service stopped working and was closed"  This appears multiple times in a day.  I do not necessarily see any effect of it but it is definitely new and constant.  I do not know what triggers it - it just appears without any consistency.  I have searched the web, but there is nothing that references  Execution Services which is weird since it must be a Windows service that people would talk about - or is it a virus?  So I have not been able to troubleshoot it without any guidance.

2.  Constant High Usage of CPU.  According to Windows Task Manager and Windows Resource Monitor, the CPU is always showing usage of about 55 to 60% as a minimum - never goes lower.  The "Image" list in Resource Manager for the CPU never shows what service is using it.  Up to this point, I could always add up the CPU amount shown and they would equal the total number shown.  Now, frequently there is little to no CPU usage while at the same time the total shows 55-60.  I have discussed this with the Microsoft Community.  It seems there is an issue with Windows Update service hogging 50% of the CPU while updating.  It seems this is not my problem since I have gotten update... Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason.  I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes.   My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

Background:
For the past few weeks or so I was on W8.1 on my SSD and Arch Linux on my SSHD. However now when loading up Arch I get a { DRDY } error presumably on the SSHD, and W8.1 crashed very soon after logging in. I noticed that sometimes that the computer does not freeze until I open up a game (Total War 2). TW2 had been working fine previously. I would go ahead and reset/refresh my main W10 drive but I'm not sure if that's the issue. I have never gotten a BSOD just a freeze then sometimes black screen with a mouse.

What I've tried:
I consistently virus scanned with Malwarebyte's and Defender to find nothing.I hoped upgrading to W10 would fix the issue, but it did not./sfc scannowSMART check (no issues)check Task Manager/used Proc Explorer (or variants) can not see cause of disk usage spike

What I believe could be the issue:
I want to say the drives are failing, but I'm honestly dumbfounded.I've read it's possible to the SATA cables.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Tried creating another user account, and so far no issues with the new account. Also added some logs, if more are needed I can add them.

EDIT 2: TW2 crashed it again

Answer:Not BSOD but constant freezing with drive spiking at 100% usage

It seems I may have gotten infected from an exe. File ( I know...if I could kick myself in the head I would).
The problems I encounter are frequent freezing, restarting, AVG gets turned off, ram is running constantly at 90+% and I get window updates upon shutting down. I've recently cleaned the inside of dust etc. while gpu temp is 115 f, seems high...might be why screen goes black. Right before shutdown the ram dropped to 20% usage.
Also I tried to run a FRST log but it never finished and I got an error saying it might not have installed correctly. Secondly I tried to restore but it said it could not. Tried a second time and all restore points vanished. I recently flashed bios but had no problems after, only the day after that exe. file did I start having problems.
Win 7 64 bit
Firefox Browser
corei 5
4 gig ram
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi all,

Didn't know where to put this, but if its in the wrong place, feel free to move it.

Ok, my problem started earlier today, when i loaded up my game online and it started freezing and Google chrome started having minor crashes.

I then opened task manager to find out what was wrong, and saw Java and also the DVD i was watching at the time through windows media player had jumped to over 200 in the memory box.

I am currently running Malwarebytes and superadblocker checking for Malware and Viruses, So far nothing has come up.

I will post a couple of screen-shots to help you in finding my problem.

Got the DVD running now and its skipping, disc is in fully working order, never happened before. Also tried running the game and posted some screen-shots.

EDIT: Added Malwarebytes log for those of you who know how to read it. Also added a screenie of svchost.exe, that seems oddly high if I'm not mistaken, and im also worried about the amount of them.

Answer:High WTM Memory usage, and freezing.

Did you try restarting?

This will be a little lengthy, so I apologize beforehand. I have been having constant problems with windows 10 freezing. The problem started in the beginning of January, but it is possible that my computer was not used in the past two months. This computer is primarily a gaming computer and I was extremely busy for the past couple of months, so if I did use it, it would have only been a handful of times. When I started using the computer in the beginning of January the computer started out working just fine. Then windows installed a few updates and I installed a video game. Then I started having a few computer freezes, but they were few and spread out. I originally thought the problem was just related to the game because the crashes usually happened around the times when i was loading or closing the game. However, that was just about all I was doing at the time. The problem also became significantly worse very quickly. I do not know if a meltdown update was applied or not. The fall creators update was applied, but I have since removed that update during my troubleshooting ventures.

On to the actual problem. After booting my computer, my computer freezes after 12 minutes. I measured the time from when the log in screen first shows up until the computer freezes. It is almost exactly twelve minutes every time. The variation is small enough that it could just be a difference in when I hit the start button for the timer. The computer freezes, but I can move the mo... Read more

Hiya! I hope that this is in the right place, but... can someone help me?
I've been having issues with my Toshiba laptop since, day one. I, obviously, had Windows 8.1 when I got this laptop, which was 6 months ago, just after Xmas and that had problems. Lagging whenever it wanted to, freezing whenever, couldn't handle more than a few apps open at one time, causing webpages to buffer, music to jutter and things to be laggy and end up falling unresponsive. My laptop was sent to be cleaned out, a few months ago, despite being new but that didn't solve anything. After one day, it went really laggy again and here we are with it being how it was before this was even taken to be 'cleaned', so something must be going wrong. I had CPU and Memory very high then, too, so... what? Help...

When I first installed Windows 10, it seemed a li'l better but after a few days, back to square one again... It lags and it goes unresponsive and it can't handle doing stuff that a laptop should be able to do. I'm not running fancy games on it, nothing. Just Skype, Clementine, which is a music player, Opera and maybe a word-like program to write stories with and Audacity. Sometimes it's just Skype, but that'll be enough for it to fall...

Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? I've put all my computer details in, so you can find them in the drop-down tab, I think, if it worked. Here's a screen-shot of the issues, too.

Hello. For the past 2 weeks I've been having major problems with my computer. I'm currently on a different computer in my house because I cannot get mine to work at all. To describe as best as I can..

The problem seemed to appear out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago. I was getting constant freezing problems.. usually when loading banner ads (when I would see something like "transferring data from adbrite..") and it also freezes EVERY TIME my screen saver would come on. I thought it had to with my wireless network (I have a Netgear router and had a netgear wireless adapter).. so I got rid of my adapter and bought a linksys one.. it didn't help. Then after that.. my computer got worse and takes FOREVER to load windows. The blue screen where I pick a user.. then load the desktop.. it now takes OVER 10 minutes to load my desktop. I only have 2 programs that pop up when I start (Yahoo Messenger and XFire messenger). When I do manage to get my desktop loaded.. I can't ever acquire a network address to get online. So I can't post a hijack this or anything. When pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.. my PF Usage is very high (1.32gb and 50 processes running). And I'm also getting an error sometimes about my virtual memory being very low. I have windows xp sp3. Does this sound like any normal problem to anyone? Do I need new hardware? Should I call GeekSquad?

I have tried several things (stopping the processes that load on startup, running AdAware, DeFrag, a... Read more

Hello all! Firstly, please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place. I'm not much of an expert on computers and this seems like a networking issues to me.

For about the past week, I have been noticing that my network or connection to my internet service has been freezing. It seems to happen when I download large files. I normally download at a rate of about 200-350 KB/s but for the past week I have been picking up speeds of almost 1.3 MB/s clearly this is A LOT faster than I am used to. All goes well for a while and the download goes very fast, but then all of a sudden it just stops and freezes. Not the computer, but the ability to use the internet. When I open my task manager and click on "networking" the little graph will be stuck at a certain percentage. Normally around 6 or 8% The only way I can get back onto the internet is to reboot my computer. Sometimes after I do that I receive a message that windows has recovered from a serious error. I later read that this can be caused by dumprep starting during the startup of windows. I then went to msconfig and unselected dumprep from the startup options...restarted and yet another dumprep option pops up. Can anyone help? I tried to update my internet drivers to see if that was the problem...and there was an update available, but my internet froze while downloading the updates. It just seems to be too much for my computer to handle.

Hey,
I have XMG P724 laptop(Clevo P370SM-A) with the following specifications:
I7-4810MQ 2.80-3.80GHz
GTX 970m SLI
24 GB ram(16GB 2133MHz HyperX Impact and 8GB 1866MHz HyperX Impact)
500GB Samsung 850EVO SSD, 1TB HGST 1TB HDD and 500GB Samsung 850EVO Msata)
Windows 10
So, i am getting 100% CPU usage and this causes very annoying mouse cursor lags, screen freezing and weird sound like "Diiiiiiit".
I am using razer external keyboard(cuz i have broken my keyboard connector) and razer mouse, and therefore using razer synapse 2.0 which can utilize high percentage of CPU. But, even after closing razer synapse i still get this annoying issue. My subwoofer is also damaged, but i use "Bass redirection" and "subwoofer gain" from sound blaster and razer surround sound pro. I applied arctic-silver mx-4 and this probably started to happen after that and i removed and applied mx-4 again, but issue still persists(maybe i again applied it wrong), but i am not sure if thermal paste can cause such a problem. It happens both when on battery and plugged in and both while doing simple tasks and while playing games on 4k. The laptop is new, i bought it less than month ago and overclocked only GPUs, but i stopped overclocking after getting this issue, but it still happens without any overclocking. CPU can be utilized by only 10% while playing games, but can suddenly go up to 100% usage while doing simple tasks. CPU temperature reaches 90+ degree while playing demanding games, such as BF4 at 4k ultr... Read more

Hi,
I'm having an issue where my computer is always maxed out at 100% disk usage even when I'm not actively doing anything. When I look at Processes in Task Manager, the offending process appears to be ntoskrnl.exe.
I've tried a few minor things including rebooting, disabling Windows suggestions notifications, disabling the SuperFetch service, updating various drivers, all with no luck.

I used one key recovery because my computer was slowing down since I filled up the hardrive and once I was finished I noticed after opening the task manager that my disk usage was jumping from 0 to 100% constantly and has been doing it for a 5 hours straight but the process that's using some much disk is something called "System"  If anyone could help that would be greatly appeciated.

Hello,

A week ago, i noticed my hard drives makes small littles noises when i'm doing nothing on the computer; every few seconds, the disk makes slight noises..usually it is dead silent.

i tried to remember what happened on the computer around that time and here it is :
-internet explorer update.
-adobe reader and flash updates.
-some windows updates.
-a windows 10 update that i had to hide otherwise it would have installed windows 10.

the cpu usage goes around 0 to 5- 6 %, like usual i think. i haven't noticed any slowdowns during applications and gaming.
i don't seem to have more processus running than before (52).
i tried to see the disk usage using the ressource monitor and here is a screen shot at idle : Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

it would seem that the service System (PID4 ) is constantly writing something at roughly 10k octet by seconds. i don't know if it is normal and if it was the same value before the problem.
i don't know what to think of the info regarding disk activity below that.
Any idea of what i should do to shut down those noises? is that disk activity normal? (maybe it should be at 0)..

Thank you for your time.

The new Win8 touch laptop I just got is running ridiculously slow. Apps take minutes to open sometimes because the disk is constantly being used by several processes, even when idle.

The main culprits showing in Task Manager are "Service host: Local system", "Windows Modules Installer Worker", and "Antimalware Service Executable". Between them they are using 97+% of the disk and about 50% CPU constantly. It's gotten a bit better since I uninstalled all the trialware garbage that came on it, including McAfee, which was a massive slowdown. I plan on just using Windows Defender for security but it still says it's turned off, could that be the problem?

But for real, I'm pretty sure McAfee slows down the system more than the viruses.

Answer:New laptop, constant 100% Disk usage and ~50% CPU

I quit using Kaspersky anti-virus 2013 (our internet provider offers it for free), on my Windows 7 Dell Inspiron 1545 because it would use 100% CPU at random times several times a day. Went to Windows Defender and the problem cleared up. I now use Windows Defender on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

I would scan with MBAM

The free version has the same scanner as the paid.
Something writing data like clockwork and it wasn't doing it before makes me suspect one of the updates. If MBAM comes up clean then the only way to rule out the updates is to remove the new ones one by one.

That's the main reason I don't update unless it is a Service Pack. It is too easy to break something when you make multiple modifications at once.

For the past year I have been making an effort to continue to use my computer with my constant freezing browser and the freezes as well but enough is enough I am looking to fix it. My Firefox browser freezes at random times and my computer is a shadow of itself in terms of the speed that it had last year. Online gaming has been bit of a problem as well. My latency/ping would be spiking from 150-800 every 2 secs. It's unfortunate because online gaming was never an issue for me before this year. My latency would stay at a stable 40-80, with no hickups of any kind. Honestly it is not my router or my internet. While browsing my connection would never slowdown or disconnect at any time so it isn't to be blamed for it.

Below, I have my DDS log. I tried using GMER Rootkit Scanner as well with no prevail. 2 times my computer would go BSOD even with the adjustments that were recommended in case my computer wasn't able to scan with the regular settings.

Hi y'all,

I have an ASUS K53E with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. The issues I'm experiencing CPU usage sky rockets to 100% at start up. The only programs I have installed are Google Chrome and Audacity(a free audio editor(lightweight)). I purchased the computer less than 6 months ago. It also freezes constantly.

I took it into Best Buy 2 weeks ago for tech support. They stated that the memory and hard drive are in working order through their testing. I have also ran tests and found the same thing. They stated that the issue is Windows 7 and they wanted $200 bucks to fix it, but they didn't tell me the specific problem.

Any suggestions?

Other troubleshooting I've done:
-I've restore the computer to a repartition twice. Still froze.
-I've ran CCleaner and othe registry fixer-uppers. No go.

I'm thinking its Win 7, but I didn't create a restore disk. Any inexpensive suggestions?

Use Advanced Boot Options to boot into safe mode (I assume it won't freeze in safe mode; if it does, we will have to try a different strategy).

Run a command prompt (start menu->all programs->accessories->command prompt) and type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) and hit enter. This will check for system file errors. Post back the results. Note: You may have to run it three times to fix all errors.

If the above does not work, look into doing a Repair Install after first backing up all important ... Read more

Hi!

I'm back.  I had this exact same problem a couple of months ago and we fixed the problem with a total restore.  My system was working beautifully up until 3 days ago.

Upon start up my system freezes. I login. It boots up, full screen with desktop icons. But freezes when I try to move the cursor. The clock time freezes at that point, also. I reboot and login under 'safe mode' with networking.

I would have written sooner, but I had a deadline to meet today.  Now that, that's completed I have all the time to work on this.

Before I try another restore, I'd like to see if the problem could be fixed.  I noticed, about a month before, my system was experiencing high CPU usage.  To the point where my fans would go on high alert.  This only happened when I was on certain websites that used flash.  This message would come up:

Shockwave Flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop plugin now, or you can continue to see it the plugin will complete.

It never crashed my system, but I would immediately exit the website and the fans would die down.  Today in safe mode with ntwkg, the same thing happens. The message does not appear, but my system gets really hot and fans are high.  Just like in regular mode, I shut down the websites causing the problem and my system returns to normal.

Since the restore, I haven't loaded many appli... Read more

This morning I ran sfc /scannow.  It said that I had corrupt files, but unable to fix.

I next ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" to view details.

And no file showed up on my desktop.  But at the bottom of the report it said....

FINDSTR:  Cannot open NICOLE
FINDSTR:  Cannot ope C:\Users\NICOLE\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

and yes, it did run all of this as an "Administrator".

Until, some is able to help... I'll keep searching and adding updates.

Thank you!

I've had this issue for a very long time. And i have tried many solutions. Basically, my disk usage keeps jumping up and down, causing lag spikes, freezing my screen for a second or two every now and then, which is annoying me so much. I created an account here to post this. This is my last resort. If i can't fix it, i'll probably go back to Windows 7. I hope that'll fix the problem at least... but i'm starting to worry that this is an problem with my computer, and not the OS. I've had this problem on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10. I've upgraded 3 times to see if there would be a change. But no luck.

I have a 64 bit ASUS laptop, running Windows 10 Home. System specs:

Intel Core i5-3337U CPU 1.80 GHz
8 GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000

Solutions i have tried:
Disabling Superfetch, Prefetch, Windows Defender, Windows Updates, Windows Firewall
Resetting Virtual Memory
Updating all Drivers
Uninstalling Google Chrome
Changing Settings in Google Chrome
Clean Install
Installing AVG so Windows Defender stops
Disabling background tasks in Task Scheduler
Closing Processes in Task Manager/Process Monitor
Installing all Windows Updates

Could you advise your laptop model?

Disconnect any network connections.

First some basics checks.
Download and run Crystal Diskinfo (free), easy to find - SMART param checks and report the result - Good/Caution/Bad...
If ok Download and run Crystal DiskMark to check transfer rates and post the result.

Then run chkdsk on C:
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

Run chkdsk on D:

Then boot to Safe Mode - do you observe any problems?

Then do a clean boot - again, do you observe any problems?

I use the malware removal guide above as my bible on removing viruses and has worked for years, but I think one's slipped through my antivirus software... I'm running windows vista and last time i knew(windows xp that is) it isn't normal for your disk to be in constant use, so i checked it out and apparently svchost.exe (LocalSystemNetworkRestricted) in the cause, and using 100+ mb of memory. I can't find any viruses, spyware etc with the scanners though. I've run out of ideas, could someone help me?

I have been experiencing deteriorating performance on my computer characterised by the task manager reporting 100% disk usage, despite nothing showing more than 0.1mb/s I/O activity. I have no problems getting to the login screen, but as soon as I log in, it takes about 15 minutes before the computer will be usable. It seems to choke up when loading explorer and the taskbar. When it freezes, I can't hear any disk activity, but when the freezing ends, I can hear the familiar hard disk ticking sound. Unfortunately, I can't access the task manager during the startup, but I suspect that it's the same 100% disk usage problem.

I have disabled superfetch and windows search services to no avail. I am on a single hard disk that is practically still empty. I have run a chkdsk C: /f from the command prompt, and no errors were found. I have also manually set the page file to 8gb min, 12gb max (i have 8gb physical ram). At this stage, I'm running out of ideas. This problem seems to have started since the anniversary update. Please help with this problem, and let me know what information is required.

I don't know if I posted this in the right forum, but I have Windows XP so I figured I'd start here.

I'm having a problem whenever I move my mouse. The computer screen completely freezes up and doesn't update itself until I stop moving the mouse. Whenever I play computer games it is the most apparent. If I move my mouse at any point the game becomes completely frozen until the second I stop moving it, then everything is totally fine.

I've run my computer in safe mode and everything runs fine, no freezing or anything, so I don't think it's a problem with the mouse. I updated my video drivers (I have a GeForce 8600 GT) and it didn't seem to help it. I've tried closing certain processes in the task manager, but no improvement.

When I have the performance tab on the task manager open I can see the CPU usage go up to about 50% whenever the mouse is being moved. When I boot in safe mode, there is almost no CPU usage when the mouse is moved.

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Question: High Disk Usage

I am trying to figure out the cause of my extremely high disk usage. No matter what I do, the usage is anywhere from 80%-100%.

I've stopped and disabled the Windows Search, along with Superfetch.

I've also tried disabling "Show me tips about Windows" and it hasn't worked either
Here is how Task Manager currently looks

Any ideas on how to get the usage back to a reasonable %? I've tried everything I could find and nothing will work. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer:High Disk Usage

Well...I ran a Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan(s). Malwarebytes found a couple pretty severe things and Defender didn't find anything; both ran full scans.

Also ran a diskcheck and it completed successfully. As of right now I am not having the 100% disk usage constantly. Windows Search and Superfetch are both still disabled, along with the notification mentioned in my first post.

Task Manager shows 'System and Compressed Memory' using 25% disk constantly. It is slowing system, can't burn to Blurays because of high disk usage. Googled problem, tried a few suggestions (turned off app notifications and Windows services 'Superfetch' and 'Windows Search') but didn't fix problem. Any more suggestions?

Question: High Disk Usage

Lately I have noticed a high disk usage with the computer using task manager. Things that cause this spike is conducting normal operations just as opening an application or the web-browser.

I do not recall seeing any disk usage on task manager for the past few weeks except yesterday (perhaps I did but I do not remember). It appears to me as if those application are using the HDD as RAM even though there is space on the 8GB memory. So I am not entirely sure.

I would like to know if it is normal for applications such as Chrome to be using the disk space? And if so, would you have any idea as to what may be causing high disk usage?

Hi, sorry about my english first.
I bought new lenovo ideapad Z400 touch 2 month ago with win8.
last week i upgraded to win 8.1 and recover back to win 8 , since then i have some problems.
When I have the Task Manager open, I notice the disk usage climbing to 50, 75, 100 also the CPU , even though there's scarcely any disk activity going on, the laptop's fan is working harder and very noisy , my processor's speed and heat are jumping high without any progrems on.
I tried almost anything, cheacked for viruses, disabled unnecessary startup progrems, clean boot, but it still the same.
please help.

Answer:High disk usage and cpu

Sometimes TrustedInstaller/Windows Modules Installer Worker goes on a cleanup/compression binge, where you'll notice TIWorker.exe working the CPU in the background. Personally I'd just let it run for a few hours (maybe whilst you're doing something else), where it should complete doing what it's doing and the CPU will return to normal.

If you're feeling paranoid, maybe go to the 'Details' tab and check the properties for the process to make sure it is actually the legitimate Windows Process that's running and not a fake one using the same name.

Hi,

I've recently bought a new Lenovo Laptop, and it arrived today.

Something I'm not very fond of is extreme spikes in disk usage, and would like to see if I can solve this without sending it back for repair

I captured screenshots of what I might find useful, if you need more just tell :)

Answer:High disk usage on new PC

When a new Windows 8 system is first booted the OS will spend a lot of time downloading updates, syncs with other devices and OneDrive, updating tile apps and performing things like scheduled anti-virus definition downloads and scans, plus disk defragmentation/optimization. All this should calm down after a time.

Question: High Disk Usage

For the past few days my disk usage randomly goes up to 99-100%. It's noisy and slows everything down and is very annoying. There do not appear to be any processes taking up the disk space and I can't figure out what is causing it. Then sometimes it goes back down to normal and everything is fine. I have run malware scans and that didn't help. Here is what I have:

Windows 10 Home
3.80 gigahertz AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core
8 GB memory
Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
I use Comodo Internet Security

What else do I need to check when this happens to figure out the cause?

Answer:High Disk Usage

Don't you mean CPU usage?
Open Task Manager, check Show processes from all users, and check what process is hogging the CPU.

I've decided to finally let the experts assist me since I've been really yanking my nerves and wasting time on maybe bad thought solutions.
Okay so the issue is I'm getting a constant high disk usage without even having anything running

Also I resetted my pc yesterday, as of now I'm running a clean install of Windows 10.
Did the ''turn off notifications from Windows''

Question: High Disk Usage

Hi all, I'm struggling with finding things to fix my high disk usage. I've spent many months searching the internet and doing all the listed suggestions like disabling SuperFetch, Windows Defender, Updating drivers, ect. and still I'm stuck with a high disk usage. Here's a screen shot I took immediately following a restart and opening up to a new Firefox window.

I have noticed Service Host: Local System takes up quite a bit of disk usage and that if I close it and let it open back up all by itself then it immediately makes my disk usage drop into a much more manageable 40-60% usage range. But eventually after a while it maxes out again and I have to close it out again. It's an annoying step just to be able to use my computer.

Also, I have noticed that after working with my mom's computer today, that her disk usage when no programs are running is only like 5%. Makes me wonder why my computer can have no programs running but my disk usage never drops below 30% and sits in the 40-60% range with spikes up over 75%.

I honestly don't know enough about computers to do much more than I already have without causing major issues. BTW, just a couple weeks ago I had to do a Windows reinstall, not a complete reinstall, just the basic reinstall they allow you to do on Windows 10 where you still keep all your personal files. Ever since that a lot of times when I try to open a process like Run or Task Manager I'll get an error message that it can't open and then I do it again and it wil... Read more

Hi so system and compressed memory uses 100% disk space when i start my computer and continues to do so for 10 minutes at least and it will also do this randomly when i'm gaming or just on the internet. I've checked all of my drives to see if they were updated (I just clicked search online for newest update idk if that's the best way to do it) and i ran a virus scan in safe mode and did some other things like disable prefetch and windows search and i even disabled "show me tips for windows 10" So please help me out if any of you can!

Answer:High Disk Usage

Not to try and scare you richiethomas1234, but if your pc is infected with a rootkit (aka bootkit) even scanning it in safe mode is not always going to work.
try checking your computer using a antivirus that will scan your pc after POST, but before your Operating System loads. The problem you are describing can be the result of your pc infected by a worm.

Hi All

I`m having serious problems with my windows 7 machine. It started yesterday when I was getting blank screens. TOday I turned on and its running very slow, freezing up and i noticed an svchost.exe process was using about 6gb of ram. I had to reboot about 5 times just to geta taskmanager up and then it would freeze up again.
I tried a windows restore to about 4 days before incase it was some virus but it hasnt fixed the problem. Everything is ok in safe mode and i`ve tried running dr web virus checker aswell as installing norton antivirus and malwarebytes on an old windows xp installation on the same pc but theyre not finding anything.

Any ideas? Really dont fancy having to reinstall windows.

Thanks

Paul

First signs was HD noise increasing over time; system freezing when only IE and Outlook running; constant crashing on Facebook and FB game; Windows Update issues of downloading and installing updates - however still showed as needing to update/install; Blue screen "crash dump"?

Multiple sweeps with AV Trend Micro Titanium; online 'House Call' - some minor issues found and deleted. Contacted Microsoft Help Desk who assisted in the Windows Update issue.

Hi guys,

I have been having issues with my computer recently. The disk usage has been jumping up to 100% frequently, and the memory usage is up in the 80's. CPU usage is on the high side too. I don't have much running, I wonder if there is something running in the background that could be the cause? It is not all the time, but intermittently.

Also, maybe a windows 10 issue, but when i try to shut down about 50% of the time it just starts up again?

I previously posted this in the malware section and my computer was found to be clean

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mari.

A few weeks ago my computer started shutting down every few minutes due to high CPU disk usage. I troubleshot and it seemed to be an issue with Windows 10 or Chrome. I uninstalled a bunch of items and changed settings and the problem seems to have gone away now. Now, however, my computer is getting really hot and the fan doesn't stop. I don't think it's because of dust.  Any suggestions? Also I'd appreciate help backing everything up and restoring factory settings and possibly an older version of word if that's recommended.  Thanks in advance!

Hi,

As I'm typing this with no other apps running and a clean install of Windows 10 performed an hour ago I have 97% disk usage. wsappx is showing "1.8mb/s" in the task manager followed by a bunch of normal objects that show like 0mb/s or .1mb/s...hovering at 94% right now.

I've battled this before with limited success doing everything mentioned before like disabling BITS, Defender, fetch, prefetch, etc...

This is a 6month old ACER E5-575-33bm and about two days ago the original hard drive failed. It's not completely busted but I was stuck in an automatic repair loop and I tried to remedy it with all the suggestions out there. I couldn't even go into safe mode. Nor could I do a repair or fresh install on it using a WIN10 usb boot disk.

My question is. Is this just windows 10 and I have to live with it? (down to 1% disk usage at the moment after about 3 minutes). I'm concerned that the last hard drive died because of this problem of intermittent spiking. Does anyone know if this is a hardware problem? Did I just get a bad mobo? Is it my ram? Should I bring it into Acer service? Will they just tell me it's normal and tell me to carry on?

Answer:Is this disk usage too high for windows 10?

Hi, in an idle state you should expect 0 disk usage. (Assuming no internet activity e.g. background downloads.

I understand you've replaced the drive and clean installed Win 10 on a newish PC- presumably the Creator's build?

You should not try to fix this by disabling Windows services.

Otherwise it's impossible to comment without information.

I believe you are in a clean boot state.

Please post a screenshot of your task manager, organising any columns of interest high to low by clicking on the relevant column tab. Repeat for different columns if useful.

Please also complete your system specs (see mine for comparison), including details of your disk(s).

Well I don't know when this really happens but this 2 process make the pc stop working and once I look at the HDD light it looks like HDD is working none stop
when I try to press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" the screen takes long time to show up if even it shows up
once I managed to get starting the shut down process it takes forever to shut down, and most time I have to hold the power button to turn off the pc and the odd thing is that if the shut down is really slow and the shut down process is completes then pc will boot up really slow
how do I know this because I have turned off the boot GUI so I can see the list of the drivers while loading, normal times (when pc didn't friezed/slowed down) or the times when I hold the power button to turn off then on the boot up list of drivers will load very fast as you can't see the lines but if I let the pc shut down  normally (while everything slowed down) once I try to boot up it runs really slow each line takes like really slow then I have to run the pc in repair mod then in the scan wont show any problem but once the scan is done it will boot fast, my problem is that I don't get any error code or some thing
please help me fix my pc

Hello,

I've had this problem for a while.

After I stop using my computer, at the 4th minute mark of being idle something sets off. I always notice it when I work next to it because the vents rev up, it becomes loud, which means more wear and tear, etc.

So first things first, open up the task manager and process explorer to see what's going on. However, as soon as I move my mouse (or give any input really) everything calms back down to 0% or 1% and I can't really see what's driving it. I still managed to snap this screenshot though.

As you can see from it, BitDefender seems to be the culprit. But I don't understand why because even when I turn idle scan and auto-update off, the problem is still here. So it might not be BitDefender after all.

I've also thought of Windows indexing and defragmenting services which were set to run at idle. Nothing is solved after switching both to off.

I'd like to know how can I find out what process exactly is causing the CPU to rise, that is, high disk usage.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:High idle disk and cpu usage

Just sounds like normal windows maintenance to me, mine starts off automatically after being idle for a few mns, they should settle down after a while, but as soon as you use the machine windows pauses the process

Event viewer might also give an idea of what it is doing

A way to see what process is doing it
Disable screen saver if it comes on after a few minutes
open up task manager on the process tab sorted by cpu

sit and watch it for 4 mins and you should see which process is running

Answer:High disk use reduces CPU usage

That's normal in my opinion. Spinning platters are slow at accessing multiple reads and writes concurrently. This is where SSD's greatest advantage is truly demonstrated. It happens to my laptop too like when I am decompressing very large .rar, .iso .arc etc. files, My whole system slows down to a crawl. I mean opening a new tab in a browser takes more than 3 seconds instead of being instantaneos. The reason you feel that the CPU is not working well is because the hard disk does not have enough data to feed the CPU. In other words. the hard drive is bottlenecking your CPU and RAM.

Hi,
I upgraded to Windows 8 a few months ago with a clean install. Around a month ago, my computer started to freeze up and experience huge slow-downs. Trying to open the Task Manager can take minutes of waiting. When it does open, the physical drive/disk usage (not CPU) for the "System" is 99% or 100%. The "details" tab again shows a process labeled "system" which leads to ntoskrnl.exe in the System32 folder.

I was worried about malware being the problem, but posted in the malware forum here--everything checked out okay.

Any ideas why this program, which from Google sounds like the trigger of the BSOD, might be running at such a high disk usage? Or is something else the problem? Thanks for any help with this!

This should take you right to the problem folder/files:

https://www.jam-software.de/custome...guage=EN&PHPSESSID=lhjqrkqfcqi7nmlbmpmbcitgn0

Didn't see it here at MG. If your PC is running slowly, it might take a while for the scan to run, but it will show you how your disk usage is allocated very clearly...

Hey guys, This is the second new Aspire F 15 laptop I've picked up. I replaced my previous one with a new one because of a high disk usage error. I couldn't fix it despite spending countless hours trying every fix I could find online. So I'm quite frustrated now, after picking up a new model and seeing the same problem. The disk usage typically hovers around 95% in task manager when nothing is running, and when I open any program it shoots to 99% - 100%. Sometimes it goes below 90%, but it's always shortlived. The services in task manager that usually hog all the disk usage are:Service Host: Local SystemwsappxMcAfee Scanner service I don't think this should be happening with a brand new laptop, especially with the second model. Can someone please explain what might be causing this or how to change it? Or if I should just return it and get a different laptop. The F 15 has everything I need for my price range, and I'd rather not have to find another laptop. Again, I've tried every solution online that I could find, and it nothing helped. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hi,Try uninstalling or disabling the trial version of McAffe, you will be protected immediately by Windows Defender, if you want a third party AV program, you can find many alternatives online.

How to I correct for all of this? Thank you, eddie460

I have windows 10 on a new PC with 0 hdd issues, but my PC starts up and the disk usage stays over 100% for a very long time. Opening software such as google chrome for the first time after a restart takes up to 100% disk usage and so does doing a simple search on my PC. I have disbaled superfetch, windows search, and background intelligent transfer service, but nothing has worked. Is this just Windows 10 OR is it my PC? I've seen a lot of people complain about this issue and have already returned one new HP Envy PC because of issues IT had with windows 10 and sleep issues. Now my Acer 605-UR1B seems to be having issues with this windows as well. Is this normal? If not, what is the normal disk usage for starting up chrome or searching? Here are my specs:
Intel HD Graphics
16gb DD3 Ram
2TB HDD Intel I7 4790
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I have the pro Version of Malwarebytes and it does the same as yours disk 100%. I have had to stop it from running and updating and stopped it at start up. Sometimes windows updates does the same.
Not sure if it is just a W10 problem or just a computer problem.
Cant see any way of solving the problem so just have to put up with it.

I purchased a Surface Pro 4 back in Janaury and noted that the OS was taking up less than 16GB of hard drive space.
Last week I had to do a reset and ended up having to reinstall the OS from a USB (ran into all kinds of issues, but got there in the end....), but now the OS is taking up over 25GB of hard drive space.
Are there any files I can safely delete that may be chewing up the extra 8-10GB of space?
I've looked at the windows.old, but it's less than 600KB.
Have also ran the disk clean up tool after reinstalling Windows, but it only found 300MB of stuff it could get rid of.
Can anyone suggest any files I can safely get rid of in the Windows file?

Answer:Disk space usage seems high

Hey there. When I install new builds etc. I use cleanmgr (a.k.a. Disk Cleanup). Type it in the search bar on the bottom of your desktop. It would be good to run that because it looks for unnecessary files in your computer and you can delete them that way.

Hey Guys, this is my first post here.

Today I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. For some reason, after upgrading, my hard disk usage is always hovering at around 60% usage and my CPU usage is always hovering at around 50%. This is when the PC is idle. When I was using 7, the disk would rarely jump over 30% usage and the CPU would never go above 7% when idle. The sound of the hard disk constantly working away is doing my head in, not to mention it's at around 50 degrees as opposed to 45 degrees previously.

Any help is greatly appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

Answer:High disk and CPU usage after upgrade.

How long since you upgraded? There is a lot of indexing and optimization that goes on after upgrade. Will be a lot of background activity for awhile.

And welcome!

Hello,

Over the past couple of weeks I have been getting high disk usage on my computer, causing it to run extremely slowly.
Is there any way to fix this issue?
Just after I took the attached screenshot, my System went down to around 6MB/s and the "Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)" jumped to around 16MB/s
Looking in resource monitor the main things causing the high read speed are: 'rundll32.exe' and 'ccsvchst.exe' and one just called 'System'
If you require any more information just ask because this issue is getting very annoying while playing games ect...

Thanks a bunch
Jack

Answer:Very high disk usage [Windows 8 Pro 64-bit]

I believe the ccsvchst.exe is a Norton executable, and, as Norton is know to be heavy on system resources, that may be the issue. Now, as to how, why, and what Norton is doing, I have no idea but you might want to try turning Norton off and see if that fixes your resource hogging. Just be careful what you are doing without the AV protection during this test phase. Good luck.

I just upgraded to TH2 from Win 10 Pro. I noticed that my disk usage is near 99% for the past 20 mins. It keeps fluctuatiing between 10 to 99. Normally my disk usage stays at 0. May be this might be Windows settling in after the upgrade? There was high disk usage the first time around when i upgraded from Win7.

Answer:High disk usage after upgrade to TH2.

Leave it a few hours and it should calm down.. TH2 is an upgrade to the OS not just a patch (that is why you get the Wondows.old etc) so it is doing all the same things as it did after you upgraded from 7.

Hi, I am playing a game getting great FPS Then it just quits.. I checked the disk usage and it's at 100%! What should I do? I am only playing that one game and nothing else! I have 8 gigabytes of ram.. PLEASE HELP ME!

Answer:Need Help With High Disk Usage! Windows 8

In DOS, nothing ran in the background when you were running aprogram.

Then Windows came along, and we had something new..... SERVICES.

I first discovered them in Windows XP. And I realized almost immediately that many of those SERVICES were redundant. (not required for the average user)

So I set about disabling all the services that I didn't need running all the time. Gee! My PC speeded up considerably!

I found a listing on the "Black Viper" website, of every SERVICE and which ones can be safely disabled for the average user PC.
I promptly disabled 24 services for Windows XP. I put that in a batch file, so I could repeat it, in just a few seconds.

That was continued to Windows 7 and now to Windows 8.

Most of what works well for Windows 7, will also work for Windows 8 or even 8.1.
They are not all that different. The registries are almost identical.

I'm still using my Windows 7 tweaks for Windows 8 and it works, just fine. Go figure!
Windows 7 and Windows 8 are more alike than MS wants you to know. (Big Secret)

Cheers Mates!

I recently installed Windows 8.1 on my Inspiron 7520 and I noticed that during the startup the disk usage is around 98/99% of my Samsung SSD 840 Pro 120gb.
I saw a lot of posts where the users complain that, during this high usage of the disk, apps don't open, the system freezes around 5 minutes and after that, there are random high usages, even on idle. But in my case this high usage lasts only few seconds (around 30s), I can open some apps with no problems and never happens again on idle, only if I restart Explorer.exe. If I restart it, it happens all again.

My question is : Is it normal? The high usage only on startup? My only worry is mess up with my SSD due this usage.

UPDATE: On Performance Monitor, the process which writes a lot is System. I disabled every 3rd party app on startup.
Thanks a lot!

Answer:High Disk usage (98/99%) ONLY on startup

Is it normal? The answer is no! Have you looked at your event viewer to see what warnings, errors or critical errors you are getting? That might provide you some insight of problems. Also, have you checked Action Center and used troubleshooters available there? Just some suggestions that might help identify. Hope you get it solved....

For the past month I've had disk usage spikles that cause my to lag and stutter in short bursts that interrupt games, music, and youtube videos. It first begaiin with my Mushkin ssd 120gb which I attributed to be the problem so i swapped it out for my current Sandisk 128gb ssd which seemed to fix the problem for about 3 days. Now its back and not as bad as it was with my first ssd but I'm still getting the 100% usage spikes and stutter. I used the SF tool and will attach some screenshots as well. Thanks in advance. This is super frustrating since its my first custom build and was hoping for better performance. I have a 2 year old Satellite C50-B that i have had to reinstall windows 8.1 twice in the last month.

What happens is that my Disk usage will go to 100% despite only showing the highest usage (system) as 0.1 mb/s

When this first happened, i restarted my laptop only for it to not boot past the inovation screen. The only way to make it do something else was to use the recovery USB that came with it. I wiped my HDD then reinstalled windows and it was fine for about a week, then it happened again.

Each time i do it i make sure that my drivers are up to date so i doubt it would be a driver issue. At first i thought my hard drive was failing, but if that was the case, surely i would have the same problem even after reinstalling.

I doubt it is a program i downloaded since the only thing i have on my laptop since it started is Firefox (and Steam before the last reset).

Now i am not sure if this is what causes it but i noticed it only really happens after it has been on for 7+ hours. However i never had a problem before a month ago.

Now i don't mind doing a reinstall every so often but 5 times in one month is getting to much (esspecially where it takes 1.5 hours to format the HDD, 30 mins to install windows, then however long it takes to install 200+ updates).

I have windows update set to never check (so it isn't that), i have not got antivirus and have real time protection on Defender turned off (so it is not that doing a scan) and i pretty much remove the bloatware after each... Read more
