Assembling a computer for the first time

Question: Assembling a computer for the first time

Hi, I have decided to buy a new computer(or the parts for one).
It will be the first time I assemble one so I would like a little
help from the people on here that has some experaince with computer hardware,
because I myself do not know very much about it.

I have done some research and this is what I came up with:
Motherboard : Asus Z97-A Intel Z97 4xDDR3 SLI CrossFireX Socket 1150 ATX
CPU : Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Socket 1150
RAM : Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 DIMM PC12800/1600MHz CL9 2x4GB
GPU : Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750Ti OC 2GB D
PSU : CORSAIR PSU 550W VS550
Hard Drive : Western Digital WD20E, 2TB, SATA 6 Gb/s, 3.5", IntelliPower, 64MB

What I want to know is if all these parts will fit together and if it is a good
computer? I want a fast computer thats good at a bit of everything. What I will be using it for mostly is programming, games like bfbc2, downloading/watching movies/tv series and just browse the internet.

And I think I will be using mint as my os(still new to linux).

Preferred Solution: Assembling a computer for the first time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Assembling a computer for the first time

I think those are great choices.

Hey everyone,

As you may see I'm fairly new here, having discovered this site not even a week ago when I started reading up lots and lots of articles and reviews on the current hardware available to build me a solid High-End system that would suit my needs.
So now that I have decided upon the following parts, I'd be thankful to know if may have missed something important or if there's anything that seems like an utter waste of money:

Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z77
CPU: Intel i7-3770k
Graphics: Gainward GTX 680 Phantom 4 GB (If I'd anywhere like to have an extra edge it'd be the graphics card. Additionally I chose the 4 GB model because I do quite some photoshopping, video editing and 3d modelling/mapping plus I'd like this card to be able to keep up with games for at least 3-4 years)
Memory: G.Skill DDR3 1600 MHz 4x4GB
Storage 1: OCZ Vertex 4 512 GB (I'd like a good SSD to keep my OS and all my programs on. 512 GB, because on my current PC even the 300 GB partition can't hold all my Steam games, and the heavy programs that I have, also I intend to have a virtual machine running some time as well, so there's no way a 256 GB drive would be enough)
Storage 2: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB SATA3 7200 rpm
Case: CoolerMaster Storm Trooper
Power Unit: Corsair TX850 V2 850 W

(Haven't really decided on the optical drive yet, will probably go with the one from my current PC at first, and get a good one later)

So if there's any t... Read more

Answer:First time assembling my own system

I think this will be an excellent system. What HSF will you be using? Hopefully not the retail one with the rest of the machine being so top-notch. It might also be worth going with a pair of 8GB DIMMs instead of 4x4. It should be fairly close in price but give you a better upgrade path in the future.

Hey there guys.
I'm buying this weekend a new computer (an early birthday present, weepi ) so I need your help to assemble a good computer.
the budget is around 1500-1800$.
I only need the computer, and prehaps a good cd-rom.. I've already a burner, a dvd player and a scanner..
I need a good graphic card for gaming, but it isn't only a gaming computer.. I need it to be steady, as well - I'm tired of a computer that stuck every 2 hours of running (actually, who doesn't.. hmm anyways)..
any suggestion of good computer component will be gladly accepted, though I would most appreciate an assebling of your own (let us say, if you had bought a new computer now for yourself, what would it contain..)..
thanks alot you guys..

Answer:computer assembling

to clawhammer or not to clawhammer, that is the question!

seriously though, if you're going to drop that kind of cash...are you better off waiting for the next gen processor archetecture? the amd chip will supposedly support both the new code and the old code for i386. I am unsure, but it may be worth researching.

as far as the video card goes, you can't go wrong with the ati radeon 9700 AIW. that card is built for versatility.

for a cd burner you can't go wrong with a 52x asus or plextor burner.

an ideal spec for me right now would be as follows (this assumes you are going to do some modifying and overclocking):

case: pc power and cooling personal mid tower
psu: antec true 450
proc: amd athlon xp 3000 barton core
mobo: epox ep-8rda+
memory: corsair twinset pc2700 ddr-ram 1gb
video: ati radeon 9700 all in wonder
audio: creative labs audigy 2 platinum
speakers: klipsch promedia 5.1
monitor: sony ep40

I intentionally left out all your ide devices because I may consider scsi devices. it may give you an extra bit of versatility. the cost may mitigate that decision, but I'm leaving it open to you.

Look at this link, It would be to much of a long reply to tell you how to build a computer.http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1444Depends what you want, Like socket A cpu for example will work with a socket A motherboard...ect But if you really no nothing at all, you might run into other problems that will end up costing you even more then if you had it built in the first place.

I recently assemble a new computer from the scratch. I have MSI PT 880 Neo series mb, P4 CPU, 40GB WD HD, and 512MB memory. I have hooked up everything properly I believe. But I am getting errors when I try to install win xp home editiion. It lets me format my hd ok, but once it starts copying files from winxp cd, it gives me error saying that setup unable to copy file x do u want to retry or skip and this happens few times and then black screen comes saying runtime error. I requested microsoft to send me a new cd because i thought cd might be damaged, but still having the same problem.

Can anyone here please help me figure out whats going on? Could it be a problem with CPU not set properly on the mb, or could it be because IDE cables that I use are not compatible with my mb? please help. thanks in advance.

Hello,

I bought all required computer parts and I'm assembling these together to build my brand new desktop system. I assembled all the parts and I'm trying to install the XP Home OS. Every time I try to do this, my system is behaving strangely. After the partitioning and formatting is completed, it threw an error saying C drive is corrupted.

I restarted my system and started installing OS again. This time also I went thru' paritioning and formatting and it didn't complain the previous error. Now it failed while doing the setup saying it couldn't copy so and so file. I repeated the process again and now it complained it couldn't copy some other file. I tried this 5 to 6 times and each time, it complained a new different file that it couldn't copy and one of those I remember is appender.exe. Sometimes, it's not even recognizing the hard drive. It's saying that couldn't find hard drive on my system. I went thru' BIOS settings and everything looks cool.

Can I get any advice?

Thanks,
sxjasti

I have a problem and really need help.
Today i assembled my computer, and it seemed to go all right. no real problems. Until i tried to install the Operating system.

I tried to install Windows 7. It said i needed the drivers because it couldn't read the hard drive, it couldn't find them, and i was forced to give up.

I tried Vista, and it had the same result.

I took out the hard drive, and put it into my old (this) computer. I was able to install XP (non-64 bit compatible Hardware, so i did XP until i uninstall it later). I went through the install proscess, and moved it back to the new computer.

When i booted the new computer, it would get to the windows XP logo, but then after than it would flash the BSOD for about half a second, and then restart.

I went into the BIOS, and messed with everything that seemed like it could possibly affect the computer's recognition of the hard drive. It still didn't work.I reset it to default.

What could be going wrong? Please Help!

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

Have you read this thread? If not, please do so. http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/580000-troubleshooting-guide-problem-builds.html

"I tried to install Windows 7. It said i needed the drivers because it couldn't read the hard drive, it couldn't find them, and i was forced to give up."
Which drivers? Why on the HDD? The drivers are on the CD / DVD unless you installed from a "flat" on the HDD.

Are you trying to install Win 7, 64 bit?

If you install XP, & probably Vista & 7, on PC 1, then move the HDD to PC 2, you will receive a BSOD, 0x0000007b
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082

Reboot, tapping F8 once a second. At the windows startup menu, select the option that states, something like: disable automatic reboot. Reboot.
Antec Nine Hundred what?

Are all of the parts new? If not, which ones?

"I reset it to default."
Good idea.

Which diags have you run?
For ram, I suggest Memtest86, which you can download & use, for free. www.memtest.org . Run Memtest86 for > 8 hrs.

Question: assembling p4 pc

hi, im assembling a p4 pc for my friend. i have never used rdram before. this guy says he wants rdram. money is no object. could u explain the whole rdram thing. what mobo shud he buy if hes gonna get rdram. hes going for a p4 3.2ht. is there a significant performance increase between 400mhz ddr ram dualled into 800mhz and rdram? im trying toi convince him to go for an athlon64 in the meantime.

Answer:assembling p4 pc

Since rdram is designed to run on a fsb speed of 800+ then yes there's going to be a good difference in speed. However it's really not cost effective if you ask me, I'd rather have a new 64bit athlon with 3200xp proc. and a gig of dual channel kingston.

EDIT : Oops that didn't help much, ok rdram can give a significant output 1.6gig/sec on pc800 and 2.1gig/sec on pc1066 since it conserves lines to the data bus it leaves the command bus time to catch up, thus being a lot faster. Good choices that have been tested for optimal use with rdram would be these motherboards ...

Hello everybody.

I decided to upgrade my computer this year. Since my old computer was a Gateway (P3 450Mhz) I thought it was a good idea to get a new case, power supply, motherboard, RAM and CPU and keep my DVD-ROM, floppy, HD, CDRW-DRIVE and video card as they are still good.

So here are the parts I put together:

Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz processor and Abit BD-7 motherboard. I got these as a CPU/board combo from Memory Shippers. The CPU, fan and heat sink were already installed when I got it although it did include all the retail stuff for the motherboard (manuals, cables, backplate, etc).

1 512MB 2100DDR Kingston RAM chip from NewEgg.com

1 Enermax 300w power supply from Newegg.com

1 Ahanix Santa Fe case from Newegg.com

To this I added my 14GB HD (the last weak link in my system that I will replace very soon this year), my VisionTek GeForce 4 Ti4200 Xtasy 128MB DDR video card, my floppy drive, my DVD-ROM (can't remember what the spec is but it doesn't matter) and my CDR-Drive from my old system.

I got everything installed, double checking all the connections.

Then I go to boot it up for the first time and I cross my fingers. My worst fear happens. It goes through the POST for a second or two and then it starts with a continuous loop of single long beeps. Nothing ever displays on my monitor.

In the corner of my mother board there is a little display that is supposed to display codes as it goes through the test. It goes through some numbers for a second or two a... Read more

Answer:My new PC- need anything else before assembling??

The main purpose of a UPS is to give you time to shut the machine down in a blackout or to take over until you can shutdown in low voltage situations. Sudden shutdowns or low voltage can be very damaging to machine components.

I have UPSs for all my machines, wouldn't be without them.

im building my first AMD pc, i have a NF7-s motherboard and AMD 2800+ Barton and the heatsink and fan that came with the retail package...i put in the CPU fine, but i cant put in the motherboard. I got 1 side but the side where i'm suppose to push down on, it wont go in any farther and i dont wanna push it too hard. On the manual the metal thing is bent in the middle but i cant seem to do that. Here are som pics

as seen on the last pic, i cant bring it down any further...am i suppose to bend the metal somehow? can you please describe how I'm suppose to do this? THANKS

Answer:Assembling PC, NEED HELP! plz

The metal clip is actually a type of "spring". Take a small screw driver and very carefully, where the lip sticks out (reference last pic), press down with the tip of the screw driver. It will take some force but it should snap onto the ZIF Socket clips (the three white extrusions).

Hey guys. I wasnt really sure in which section to post this, but since the problem started to occur after changing my hardware parts I guess this is the right section. I am gonna be quite descriptive with the problem.

What I changed.

Recently I bought a
- Mobo ( Asus P7P55D-E PRO )
- a CPU ( Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz )
- and 8 gigs of RAM ( Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 in Dual Channel )

I combined these with
- my old Raidmax Smilodon case.
- my old Video card ( ATI Radeon X1950 XT GDDR3 PCI Express x16 [ My Mobo has a PCI express 2.1 slot can that be a problem? ])
- with my current 250 GB SATA 2 hard drive (WDC WD3200AVVS)
- With my old DVD writer optical drive
- And with my old Raidmax 650W power supply

Do they all fit together / they should all work right?

How I built it:

This was my first build so I was quite excited. I basically used this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls...;feature=relmfu

First I made an external build plugging the Mobo the CPU the RAM the Video Card and the Power Supply together out of the case. When i tested it it worked fine. It asked for a hard drive but the comp booted and I heard the *short-beep* sound at the start.

Then I placed everything into the box. I also added an extra 2 slots of USB to the back because I got it with the Mobo.
Tried to boot now the ready computer and it surprisingly worked. The Windows 7 booted up and I was ready to go.
Installed all the Mobo drivers but wasnt too happy for t... Read more

Hi,

I've recently bought parts for a new PC. For reducing the costs I reused my NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT because I don't play games anymore.

I bought:
CASE: Cooler Master Gladiator 600 with front (80mm) and top fan (120mm)
Mainbord: Asrock Extreme3 870
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965
MEM: 8GB GeIL Black Dragon (for virtualisation and video-editing)
PSU: OCZ ModXstream-pro 500W
HD: 1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB + 1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB

After assembling the PC and installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, mainborddrivers from the CD & newest NVIDIA drivers everything seemed fine. Then I begun to receive BSOD pointing to my memory ... nothing wrong there but after Googling a few houres it became clair that it could be my onboard soundcard.
Downloaded the newest drivers from the Asrock website but now when I try playing Company Of Heroes Online (Yes, I restart playing games) the game crashed after a while playing with other BSOD now pointing to the GeForce-card :s

Tried flashing the BIOS to the newest 1.60 version but that didn't help.

I've never posted something like this before so I don't know if the attachments with the livekernelreports are enough to post here ...

BSOD I have had since my new PC:
BAD_POOL_CALLER (0x0000007E I think)
BAD_POOL_HEADER (0x00000019)
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (0x00000050)
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (0x0000003B)
And an error on nvlddmkm.sys (0x00000116)

A lot of errors and I don't know where to start anymore :s

My notebook has been shutting down automatically recently while playing games. This didn't happen when new and I persume it's down to overheating.

Reading through other posts, it would seem it could do with a good clean and removal of dust. I've tried opening the thing up, but am having great trouble. I remove all visible screws (including the ones under the harddrive), and the top loosens around the edges, but I can't quite seem to get the top bit off, it's as if there's something catching. Obviously, I don't want to force it.

I've also removed the DVD drive.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Answer:Satellite P30-110: need help by assembling

Hi Charlie,

Rather than dismantle your notebook, why not just suck any dust out the same way that it got in, through the air intake grilles ?

It might just solve your problem, and doesn't risk physically damaging anything during the process.

Hello! I am assembling a new PC and needed some expert opinion on it. Basically i want to use this as a gaming pc and hence want it to be a good performance machine. i have been researching on the internet for quite some time now but given my knowledge about hardware, it is really difficult for me to put the right parts in it. From my research, i have narrowed it down to the following hardware:

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 Motherboard
Processor: AMD 3.3 GHz AM3+ FX6100 Processor
RAM: 2 G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 4 GB PC RAM
GPU: Zotac NVIDIA Geforce GTX 550 Ti 1 GB GDDR5 Graphics Card (Or) Sapphire AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6790 1 GB GDDR5 Graphic card
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB HDD Internal Hard Drive (ST31000524AS)
Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 311 Plus Mid Tower Cabinet
PSU: Seasonic S12II-520 520 Watts PSU

Please suggest if this is a good package or not in your opinion. Also please suggest any modifications to optimize the entire package. Thank You.

Answer:Guidance for assembling new PC

RK2511,
From what I can see this will be a banging system. If you're not going to consider a SSD for the OS and software then the load time for programs and the system boot will take longer but once loaded it will slice through games with the greatest of ease.

OK, so I'm the only one around here with an Ebay account. My friends want some externals. Problem #1 "ships only to confirmed address" The seller doesn't understand that Marines are often away from their homes. I simply have them sent to my intelligent, yet computer illiterate wife, which leads, potentially, to problem 2. Problem #2 the wife puts four of them together. One is a laptop drive and 3 are 3.5's. The 2.5 is perfect, but none of the other three will even appear on her comp. I have had her change jumpers (set to slave rather than master), try different USB ports/cords, swap the hard drives between the cases to see if one common thing is causing this. From 2k miles away it seems she is doing everything right. Am I missing something? The drives spin as if they are reading, but can't be found. The OS is XP.

Answer:Assembling Externals?

Well, the most ovious thing - "can't be found" means what? The drives have probably been blanked and would not appear in "My Computer".

Also, maybe you just got scammed and they sent you bad drives?

I think I have bitten off a bit more than I can chew this time.

Trying to assemble my new system (finally) which is a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 motherboard in a 3R System R101 case. It's a bit different to my first system, a Pentium 4 in an Aopen case so I'm stuck trying to figure out where some of the plugs go.

Firstly the case has LED monitoring lights at the front for the CPU and system temps, fans, etc. and after plugging in all the essentials I can't make the front and rear fans work. The mobo has a three-pronged connection for the SYS-FAN but the plugs for the fans have two prongs on them so they obviously don't connect to that. There is a lead from the front of the case with two plugs that the fan prongs fit (supposingly for the monitoring LEDs) so I put them on that but I can't see how they would get power and, indeed, they do not start up.

There are other mysterious plugs which I need to sort out but I think I ought to deal with one thing at a time if there is anyone able to help.

Note that the memory is installed but not graphics card as I wish to test things one at a time. With my other PC I was able to switch on the system at this stage and see all the fans working but with this one the CPU fan will run briefly then stop so things are obviously not right.

Some hand holding here would be much appreciated.

hello everybody,

my buddy brought his pc(compaq 6420nx, minus ram) to my house to clean and reformat his hdd.

i removed the drives, mobo and psu to give it a good spring cleaning.

i gently blasted everything with compressed air.

installed cpu, heatsink and fan on mobo

installed mobo into case

installed psu

installed optical, hdd, floppy drives

installed 1 x512mb pc2100(oem from another compaq but might be from this pc)

connected power connectors from psu to hardware and data cables to devices.

started pc but then it runs(fans) for 5-10 seconds and turns off

started removing power connnectors from hardware one by one, finally remove 512mb of pc2100(oem from another compaq but might be from this pc) and pc stays on(fans). i placed another 1 x 512mb of pc3200(retail) and still, it only runs(fans) for 5-10 seconds. i then placed 2 x 128mb of pc3200(oem from my 400sc dell) and still it only runs 5-10 seconds.

i removed all ram again and pc stays on(fans) with just beeping, there's no beeping when i turn on pc with ram, it just shuts off after 5-10 seconds.

this pc was running before i got it(about a year ago), it had the ram removed and was just aside. this pc has an amd 2200+ cpu oem so it should be a decent school pc. the oem ram i was originally using, the 1 x 512mb of oem ram is supposed to be the original ram the pc came with. this ram wasn't installed when i got it from my buddy. he took this ram and used it on his other compaq then gave that compute... Down at my local pc outlet they recommended an MSI motherboard:
P43 Neo3-F 775 ATX Motherboard (32/64 bit) 109.00

I plan on installing with Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0ghz 149.99
although I could go with Quad core for $30 more, don't believe my apps will allocated for the separate cores.

Anyone heard of MSI brand or have ideas on it?

I was planning on going with Intel since I do think they are quality boards (last one is about six years and running) but you get much less with Intel, in terms of speed, etc.

Reliability is my number one priority. - Still shackled by 32 bit software.

Where can I get a decent, clean case?

I wasnt sure where to post this question, so I posted it here

So as I was replacing the LCD screen for my laptop, I must've ripped the cord that is part of the power supply. I am really bad with computers and this was the first time I took apart my computer on my own.
I'm not talking about the AC adaptor that connects to the wall. I'm talking about the wire that connects to the button you press to turn on the laptop. How serious is this damage? How much will it cost to replace it?
Or would it be alot cheaper if I learned how to solder and assemble the wires on my own? How hard is it for someone like me with no prior experience? how long does it usually take to learn?

Answer:Assembling wires for power supply?

Hi larry,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

First, is there by any chance another wire just like it attached to the PSU that you can use instead (they sometimes come with some extras)? If so, just do that and you're good to go (unless it created a short - but you'll know that soon enough).

If you tore it out from the PSU and there's no other wire like it to use, then I suggest you either take the PSU to a reputable computer repair shop (not Geek Squad or anyplace like that) and have them replace the wire or simply take the opportunity to upgrade your PSU and replace the entire unit. I do this for a living and I would not attempt what you are considering - it simply is not worth the effort involved and the risks of not getting it right (and is certainly not the time or place to learn such skills ig you don't already have them).

Frankly, I wouldn't even get it repaired (for essentially the same reasons and because it may cost almost as much as a new PSU) and would simply replace it (they aren't that expensive depending on what you need) - but that's your decision to make. As it seems to be a laptop, perhaps it might be best to let a computer repair shop (or the manufacturer's repair department) repair or replace it as it is tough to get to (and you don't sound very gentle with computers and there's much more serious damage you can do). You need to get one that fits your computer exactly and with at least as much power as the prior one and is compatible with your system - to do ... Read more

I am trying to hook up the POWER SWITCH, IDE LED, RESET SWITCH, and all of the other case connections to the motherboard. It's the little black connections with two or three holes that go into the pins at the bottom of the mobo.

My problem is that I have no way of knowing which way these cables go. Or the polarity, if that term applies. I do notice that there is an arrow and an 's' mark on one end of the connector, but I don't know what that means. Should the writing on the connectors go up or down? Does the hole with the arrow and 's' go on the lowest number pin on where it's supposed to go.

I have checked the manual, the internet, and the website and I cannot find anything that helps me. PLEASE HELP, this is about the only thing keeping my from completing my PC.

Answer:Assembling PC...NEED HELP...Case signal connections

Hello Citizen and welcome to TSG !!.

Since both the reset and power switch are "momentary contact" type switches, it really doesn't matter which way you connect them and no harm will be done if they are reversed. Just be sure that you are connecting them to the correct pins on the mobo. As for any of the "LED" leads, while the polarity needs to be correct, again no harm will be done if they are reversed (the LED will simply not illuminate). If this is the case just reverse the connection.

Let us know if there are any other connections you are unsure of.

Good luck.

The warranty covers repair of manufacturing defects. They are under no obligation to provide you with a new machine and without actually seeing the problem I have not seen anything that leads me to believe it cannot be repaired and a replacement is really necessary.

Hi guys,

To be honest this is my first time assembling my own rig. I'm trying to get the motherboard installed, but the Cougar Volant confuses the heck out of me.

I managed to install the brass raisers, and the output shield to the back of the case. What I don't get is why so many screws?

They have these really long ones, and then a lot with round tops, less but still many with hexagonal tops, and then 2 with round tops and a ridge. In addition, they have these pushy nubs thingey which I have absolutely no idea what to do with.

Any pros who have used the Cougar Volant before can lend me a helping hand?

Consumer Electronics assembly requires a tremendus amount of manual labor, or highly customzied robotics. This leads to increased cost, assembly time and energy consumption. Researchers at MIT?s Self-Assembly Lab have come with an amazing solution to handle these issues.Their new project explores how with a few components, a source of energy, and the right interactions, a cell phone could "build itself," without the need for human or even high-tech automationThey have a rough prototype for the self-assembled cell phone. It's composed of six parts that assemble into two different phones. The parts are put into a tumbler (think of something like a cement mixer) and tossed around until the parts click together into the phones. This innovation can be used for Google's project Ara phones, to assemble phones with different modules.Any other method for assembling phone?

What I have seen, the October edition is somehow problematic on a lot of machines. So I would suggest you to do what I did myself.....
Uninstall nVidia display driver using Driver Fusion , and then install an older version which was stable there.

And, you should install Service Pack 1.

In the past few weeks I have noticed a considerable slowdown of my system with the occasional max out on CPU usage to 100% an not being able to do anything other then reboot the system. I have ran SpyBot S&D and Adaware SE and nothing major comes up, just the usual cookies and tracker things that you get from going to various sites like pogo.com and other safe sites. However my computer has been used by a member of my family recently and I am not sure if maybe she had picked something up by accident. While I am not computer savvy I do know the basics of knowing when there might be a problem. Its been quite some time since I have had any problems like this and thought that I would ask here. I understand that all of you are quite busy and if you have the time I would kindly appreciate if you take a look. If not then no worries at all. Thank you again

I started coming up with this middle-line gaming build when it came time to upgrade my current desktop PC and I had a little extra money saved up (around $1000) to throw around. I've only built one computer before (my current, which has run maintenence-free since I put it together in December '06), so I have a fair amount of knowledge for the assembly, but even after a lot of research and seeing what is cost-efficient and viable for my needs in today's market, I still wanted to post the hardware here before jumping in head-first for Build #2. The primary use of this computer will be online games like WoW and the upcoming Diablo 3/Starcraft 2 (I'm a Blizzard fanboy, what can I say..), and I may occasionly play an FPS, but I will never play Crysis or anything that graphics-intensive. So here's the list:

Hello dear helpers,

It's come to my attention that my computer keeps rebooting from time to time when I am taking a nap over the day for example or playing games. There is nothing scheduled to do this on my computer, nothing I have configured to do so or the likes of it. I'm not sure whats causing this or if it's an infection. I'm starting to notice from time to time that my computer is executing files or programs (I've noticed this by the circle next to my cursor when I'm browsing, specifically when I'm not doing anything and just reading for example) which I did not authorize. These acts occur randomly throughout the day and have no pattern. I just wanted to check if there's an actual infection, albeit I'm not sure.

Here are my logs.

lately my pc's been acting up. it freezes for about 15 seconds then its fine again. usually it happens every minute.. and its really really annoying. sometimes when i play games and i have to fight monsters, the comp freezes and fifteen seconds later i'm dead

i can still hear the audio though, and when it freezes i can still move the mouse pointer. but i cant click or do anything... i noticed that the freezes usually happen when i do something significant, for example, when i'm playing NBA live, and the player goes to the hoop for a lay-up, the comp freezes right before the foul animation..
or sometimes when i'm browsing the net, it freezes right after i click "new tab"

i have searched google but found nothing relating to my problem.. i am pretty sure it is a hardware problem, because sometimes, i open up the computer and clean the insides. but i dont ground myself (because i dont know how to).

specs are:

pentium 4 XP
512 mb ram
128 mb Geforce 5 video card
2.2 ghz processor speed

so i have now given the most accurate description i could give, so please somebody help me!

plus, i really dont know of the proper forum to post this. so move if necessary

Answer:computer freezes from time to time

Hello, punkopunx
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" .

My computer has been running really slow & the hard drive seems like it is always running. Some of the disk cleaning utilities do not work b/c of space issues, the drive is 228 gb & 21.1 gb is free.

I downloaded the tsskiller & malwarebytes as recommended in another thread. Both came up clean & have also run Norton, spybot, trend micro, etc. which have not come up with anything either.

Hello, folks.

I'd just like to say that I have been coming here for quite some time and never even needed to make a single post because you had all the answers waiting for me, and I should thank you all a great deal for that. One of the finest communities on the web, and I'm proud to say I've linked at least a couple of dozen people to these boards, if not more. They all have recieved great help as well.

This time, however, I don't think I am capable of helping myself, and I think I require the assistance of a pro. I myself, while having been able to help myself before, really have very little knowledge of this stuff. Now, I did almost everything in the READ ME AND RUN ME FIRST thread, a few things I was not able to do. I think I know which malware problems I have, I am just unsure of how to rid myself of them, and I'd rather not take a chance and delete something important.

Anyway, I have attached my HiJack This log file, hopefully someone can find the time to help me as this site has many many times before.

Thanks, all the best...

-Eric

Answer:Long time reader, first time poster...Big time problem...

I need the logs from the two online scans listed in the READ ME.

6: Online Virus And Trojan Scanning

Please run the below two online scanning tools and make sure you save and attach the logs later to any request for help that you post. From step 5 you should already be in safe mode but you will need to reconnect your cable now and possibly reboot and choose Safe Mode with Networking Support. If you cannot connect in safe mode for any reason (like dial-up users), run the online scanners in normal boot mode. You will need to use Internet Explorer to run these online scans.

*** MAKE SURE YOU RUN BITDEFENDER BEFORE PANDA ACTIVE SCAN ***

Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on Click here to view the report

When the window comes up with the report. Click File, Save As.... and then change the Save as type to Text File (*.txt)

Change the file name to something short like bdscan1.txt

Then save it to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it to upload here as an attachment.

Post the bdscan1.txt file as an ATTACHMENT.

Panda ActiveScan It will only fix certain viruses and trojans. Most items found will not be fixed. When it finishes the scan click on See Report . Then in the next window click Save Report. The default report name is Activescan.txt. Just save it where you can find it so you can attach to your message when you begin a thread with a request for help.

Hey guys, Will. So, Im about to be getting a job and I want to save up some money cause I want a new computer, for a game I plan on getting. So...if I leave the reccommended requirements, can you guys virtually "build" me it, with an estimated price, then I can print it out and order it custom.Note: It needs to be able to run extremly fast with mods, cameras, msn, etc etc all of it running at one time. The game is GTA IV.RecommendedCPU - Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1 GHzRAM - 2.0 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)HDD Space - 18 GB of free space512 MB Nvidia 8600 / 512 MB ATI 3870Also, how much would it take to upgrade my current PC to be able to run it?Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06 GHz1 Gig of RAMEnough SpaceNVIDA Geforce 6200So estimated price for buying a brand new one, and estimated price for upgrading what I already have (If I can)

Answer:Time for a new computer...again

GTA IV is a buggy nightmare when it comes to system requirements when it first came out. I truely love the GTA series... but GTA 4 is well infected by Microsoft! It's the only one that is bugged, doesn't work the first time you install it from DVD, and requires a lot of patching (after it's already been released). It also forces you to install 'Gamers for Windows' and some other side applications. I suggest you need  a 2.4GHz Duo Core Processor or more, it's not really processor hungry except the loading.Your'll need at least 2GB RAM, 4GB recommended. However, what really bugs this game or gets it to run smoothly is the graphics card and video card memory!I had a 8800GTX - run like a dog, freeze, lagging, ripping, auto-locked the graphics all on low. I uninstalled the game, nothing would improve it even tweaking... read some of the troubleshooting forums around for bugs in this game, it's useless... I got an error during install, solution return the DVD to store, re-install 3 times, suddenly works. Got this Graphic card error blah, solution downgrade graphic card driver. Got lag and ripping, solution ...I got a Nvidia 275GTX 896MB later on, tried the game, it was totally different. Runs smoothly, max the graphics, no graphic ripping or lag. It was seriously like playing a different game. Still had a few bugs like issues can't go bowling, etc, but they released patch updates for those.Bottom line: It's a graphic card memory... Read more

Hi Everyone

Well, my computer is on it's last legs and not worth fixing. Both fans are operating at sub standard levels (noisy too), the power supply is about to go, and the hard drive is beginning to fail (so a techie tells me). And it's running oh so slow......

I've been browsing around looking at what's new and as usual go into an analytical tailspin of overwhelm.

Here is what I need to be able to do on a new system:

Multi task: I tend to run 4-5 programs at once and can't seem to understand why a computer can't play internet radio, send massive files to the printer, convert audio files from WMA to MP3 and edit photos all at the same time ;-) Really what gives?

Hot sync my palm
Run Mozillas browser and email program
Word and excel
Printshop 20
Dragon Speaking naturally
File masses of photos
File masses of audio files (MusicMatch)
File masses of word files
Download and transfer Podcasts to my palm
E:mail

I use my computer hard. I spend about 5 hours a day on it. Email, homework, online banking, online shopping, research, making compilation CDs for my boys (from our own album collection - really, truly)

All this while running a wireless network for internet and printer sharing on two computers - believe it or not, but this house only has one phone jack ;-(

So, what do I need in a new computer, what do I not need? What computers are worth the $'s?

My ideal budget is about $1000, I'm willing to spend $1500.

Thanks for sharin... Read more

My Windows 7 desktop is six years old, and it's time to replace it. It's a moderately high-end HP desktop, so I was thinking about getting another HP. But a co-worker suggested a semi-custom from non-HP, non-Dell sources.

Anyway, here's a sample of what I found:

I've never heard of Xidax before, but they're out there. Perhaps there are others?
I just don't know what to pick.

Side notes:
1. I will need a 500 or 512 GB SSD. If I buy without, I'll have to add. This is the part where I'm inclined to dump HP and Dell. They have little flexibility in SSDs, and anyway they charge big dollars for no-name parts.
2. I've recently learned that the GTX x50 cards are not for gaming. I'm not a big gamer, but I was told I ought to go for a GTX x60 or above. True?
3. I will need 16 GB RAM.
4. This will be my first Windows 10 box. Windows 7 home had a 16 GB RAM limit. Does that hold for Windows 10, too?

Answer:It's time to buy a new computer

Hi Margrave55,

I recommend a 500gb SDD to store your operating system and primary programs. I would highly recommend a secondary HDD which you should use to most of your programs and data files. Your data files and Piano files will not be hugely affected by being on HDD.

If you do not intend to use the system much for gaming then a GTX 1050 would be more than enough. Unfortunately, I have tried to search the Piano libraries software and have been unable to locate the correct specs required. Will you please link me to the Piano libraries website as that should tell us the recommend RAM, however, I doubt that you will require more than 16gb.

Windows 10 home 64bit will allow you to use up to 128gb of RAM.

I'm currently working on a 133 MHz Pentium that has absolutely gone ape on me. Its user suddenly experienced random crashings, especially in Excel and Internet Explorer, mostly just by freezing. At first I thought it was the memory. As it was it had two 32 MB EDOs so I bought two new replacements. I plugged in just the new ones and the thing froze on the Windows 95 splash screen. I rebooted and the thing came up loading safe mode with an error on the PCI/IDE controller (more on that later). I plugged in the old memory chips and the thing loaded up just fine (although running Excel still killed it). Loading any combination of one old chip and one new runs just fine too. Loading four chips in any combination leaves it frozen at the first splash screen and at the very best in only one combination of four could I get it to boot up to a DOS diskette without recognizing the C: drive. I've had trouble with memory in that computer before so unless anyone has any other suggestions, I think the motherboard is faulty in the third and/or fourth slot (although that doesn't explain why the two new chips don't work). Back to the controller, it is a Sound Blaster 16 PnP. The Creative Labs CD runs through it as well, and mysteriously the CD has disappeared. New drivers do nothing. Sound still works but with static and jumping on and off. CD is nowhere to be found, even when installed on a secondary IDE controller. Which brings up the fact that I have warnings on both the p... My PC is about 4 years old. I added 1GB(now I have 2GB) in Sept 09. It still takes about 20-30 to completely boot up. It freezes and the screen turns black every couple of weeks. Its not so bad just annoying. It can be very slow surfing the net. But with general work and document work, banking, Quicken etc. it is fine. I have an external backup drive. Because I use this PC for business I am afraid this thing is going to stop working one of these days. Should I just wait it out, or buy a new computer?

Answer:Is it time to buy a new computer?

That's more of a personal question. I have a computer that is 5 years old and I use it for school (not games) because it does just fine. I have upgraded the power supply, cooling fans, the hard drive and the video card over the years because the others failed or where too small. The reason is I needed two computers, one for fun and one for work so it was cheaper to just keep fixing my old computer. You may want to do the same. Its like asking when should I stop repairing my old car and get a new one. On the other hand if you need to use some of the new games, Windows 7, or Blue Ray then you will have to upgrade. The choice is yours.P.S. as for your speed issue, it should not take 30 Minutes to boot up. It could either be doing a Virus scan or you have a Bot (Virus) on your computer or some incompatible drivers for old devices no longer connected to the computer. You could use a registry scanner with an anti-virus to clean this up but you may consider a reformat and reinstall if you have every thing you need to do this.Windows XP - System Disk with valid key.MS-Office - Setup Disk with valid key.Qucken - Setup Disk with valid key.Driver - Need to download all of the drivers for your system and put them on a CD.External Hard Drive - Or any media to back your files up to.Time - Need about 2-3 Hours. If you do not then may be you can take it into a shop to get some one to look at the registry for you or buy a reputable registry scanner.

Hi all, I'm a bit blind so like to choose larger font sizes... no offense meant. My problem; I need help figuring out what time someone was on my computer. It will help tell me who the culprit is that put some cruddy stuff on it. Then, I will go back to password protection to keep them out. Anyone with knowledge of how to do this?
Thankyou ahead for your help.
MeadowLark... I should never have left my puter unprotected... lesson learned. I just need to get it taken care of and the culprit too.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I browser them all several times, and didn't know where else to put ths.

When I go to CTRL PANEL >> SYSTEM. It brings up the system details.

It says "Version 2002". My PC has 512MB of RAM :/. I have about 5 gigs of space left.

Think it is time for a new computer? I have been asking for one for the past year to my parents, but my mom always says "maybe for Christmas".

It Never comes -.- I need one..Now.

Have any clever things that I could tell my parents as to why I need a new computer?
(P.S. - I might just get a laptop, play my games on my laptop, and leave my computer for browsing the internet while I play games)

Thanks!

Answer:time computer

If it's the spec that you want, and the price you are willing to pay, go for it.I had dealings with "The Old Time" years ago. Never had a problem with them. Alot of friends bought machines from them which are old now but still going. Who's to say who's bad and good these days. Have a look at all the other outlets, if they can't beat what you've seen, as I said, go for it.SB23

Ok it's time for me to get a new computer!

I'm not as knowledgable about hardware as I am in other areas of computing so am not sure where to start lol

Lets pretend there isn't a budget (which there will be later) for now so I can get an idea of whats out there.

Lets start with the CPU and build the rest around it

AMD or INTEL? 32bit or 64bit ? Advantages of HT, Dual Core and other new words I don't get right now.

DISCUSS!

Answer:Time for a new computer....

ur best bet is to go with Intel now as their new Core 2 CPUs are kicking AMD CPUs to the kerb. All Core 2 CPUs have Dual-Core and are 64bit ready.

Hello. I currently have a computer with the following spec's:

Award Modular Bios v6.00 PG
AMD Athlon XP1800+, MMX, 3dNow, 1.5 Ghz~
256 Mb Ram
WinXP Home Edition
Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X
Soundblaster Audigy Card
Cable Modem

And other things (like printer, cd burner, etc)

Anyways, apart from the many hardware problems/failures this computers having, I'm looking to basically buy a whole new computer. I want to buy a decent gaming rig, but I can't go over 1,500-2,000 bucks. I plan to salvage what I can off this computer, (monitor, mouse, cd burner, printer, modem, speakers), but I think the rest of it is on its last legs (ram, hd, mobo, soundcard, floppy, etc).

I've already gotten some general idea of what I might go for:

Athlon64 - something... Hopefully around 3ghz?
1024+mb Ram
ATI Raedon 9800 or GeForce6 (not sure which? Both look $500-600, GeForce outpreforms, but requires a whole nother power supply?)
120gb Seagate HD (Do I really need this much? Not Big on movies/mp3s. Should I go with dual 60gb drives instead?)
A new sound card... more compatible with WinXP than my SB Audigy (this thing appears to have loads of problems)

So uh... I'm looking for a rig that will handle upcomming games such as Half-Life 2, Doom III, etc. Because what I've got now doesn't even really get by on games I'd like to be playing.

I'm hoping for some advice on what parts to buy... I'm just winging it right now... Suggestions would be... Read more

My computer is five years old and have upgraded hardware, but I feel its time to get a new computer. My question: should I go for the new AMD or Intel dual core or stick to a single core machine? I do not multi-task at all and think the dual core may be a waste of money. Is a dual core faster for average use, or actually slower as a salesman told me?

Appreciate input!

Answer:Time for a new computer

The Intel Core 2 Duo is superior to any chip on the consumer market at the moment, dual core or not. If you feel like waiting, the new AMD 65nm chips will be around sometime in 2007?

Hello,

My computer is starting to act funny. It is beginning to slow down. It freezes up often. The computer is 3-4 years old and is a Dell 4700. I had to replace the hard drive about a year after I bought it. I have deleted the cookies and also I have deleted the temp. internet files. Also I have defraged and ran disc cleanup. I blow the dust out of the inside about every 6 months. I ran the Dell diagnostics and the computer froze up when it got to the "optimize start up " section. I have the Hijack Log available if needed. Thank You for your time and help.

Question: New Computer Time

I have been having constant and ongoing problems with my desktop computer and I am at the point where I think it is time to replace it before it drives me completely out of my mind. The computer is an HP m9500z with the AMD Phenom quad-core processor at 2.3 Ghz. The computer is probably about 4 years old and was originally a Vista computer that was re-loaded to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and I don't think the shop that did the re-load did a good job because since day one I have had problems. WMP has never worked nor has IE9 and now the CPU fan is running constantly which annoys me since I watch a lot of videos online and have to turn up my speakers up really loud to hear so I think it is time to retire this computer.

I am looking at another HP computer, the P6-2143W and so far what I am hearing about it is good but I have another option I am considering and the more I think about it the more I like it. I am also thinking about getting a laptop with either an Intel i5 or i7 processor and hooking the laptop up to my 24" monitor and standard size keyboard and mouse. I have always liked having a desktop computer for the larger monitor and full size keyboard/mouse and now it seems I can have the best of both worlds by integrating my laptop into my desktop system when I am home. Most laptops I have seen have an HDMI port so the video is a slam dunk and the mouse/keyboard can plug into USB ports on the laptop.

I know there are others who do this and I would like to hear t... Read more

Hi All, I've only got a very small and old computer, it's got an 8GB hard drive.. I'm running XP (SP2) on it though, and it's all I've really needed as I'm a moderate user only.

Just recently I had heaps of trouble with blue screens and my computer turning itself off all the time. It kept coming up with warnings and *** STOP screens, among other things. I spent ages on it myself, teaching myself a few things from forums like this. In the end I deleted some processes, and things have almost come back to normal. No more blue screens, and no more STOP messages. The only thing is that my hard drive seems to be completely full, and every time I delete things to get space back, it fills right back up again with who knows what..???

I've transferred all my docs, photos, etc to a new 160 GB external hard drive I've bought now, but doesn't seem to stop the hard drive filling up with... something.
Even when I free space up, the computer intermittently takes forever to open my browser, and just to do what I would have thought were simple tasks. Having said that, on rare occasions these things work at a fine speed, which seems strange to me that it's not always the same.

I'm just wondering if there's something nasty in the system thats playing havoc with it. I don't trust this computer anymore to be secure on line, in case there's something going on, which is a real pain. I just hoped someone might be able to have a quick look at the attached HJT log for me, and see if ... Read more
