Windows 7 boot, 10/15-mins of black screen, then desktop appears

Question: Windows 7 boot, 10/15-mins of black screen, then desktop appears

Hello. I tried to speed up the boot up process by taking some applications out of the start menu/inital lunch mode as the PC boots up. However, what has happenned is that I have inadventently caused the following problem: When I start the PC and Windows 7 loads, it shows normal initializing screens then goes black for 10/15 mins prior to getting to the desktop, and then the PC runs fine. The mouse/cursor is visible and moves as I command, but nothing else.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Lenovo community, I just received a new U41 Laptop from my company two days ago. Didn't do anything much with the laptop except installed all necessary programs for my field of work. Yesterday, while I was creating oracle database, the laptop became sluggishly slow to the point nothing seem to respond (mouse cursor the only thing that still works). I powered it off by holding the power button and powered it back on only to see the "Automatic repair, diagnosing PC, attempting repairs" boot screen. After hours of wait, I realise Attempting repairs is going nowhere, did another powered-off-powered-on but this time I only see black screen. I thought it finally died and won't boot (stay blackscreen forever) but leaving it for 15mins or more, it'll go to "attempting repairs" screen again. This time I left it overnight to see if it works only to found out it failed and theres another screen that showed up asking me whether to Troubleshoot, to continue to windows 8.1. I pressed Troubleshoot but It hangs after that. (or it's just too slow to respond?) Currently,I'm trying to "Refresh" the PC using usb recovery image I made using another computer. But it's taking forever.Booting into BIOS works by spamming F2 but unsure what help it could give.I can't seem to find any Novo button in my U41 Laptop. Reading the manual states that the button is on right side of laptop. While I seem to locate a logo beside a tiny hole that seems like Novo Logo, poking the h... Read more

Answer:U41 won't boot into windows, black screen for 15 mins, attempting repairs failed.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problems. The fact that the restoration from an image is taking so long could very well be an indication of a hard drive problem. Sending it in for warranty service would be a good choice if One Key Recovery doesn't resolve the problem.

Page #58 of your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual shows the location of the Novo button. If the button is recessed you might have to use the end of a paper clip to lightly press the button. Press the Novo button when the laptop is completely shutdown.

Here is a link to that manual for your reference....

*UPDATE*: I am using XP SP3

Firstly, recently I have been experiencing a malicious, weird Windows XP Fix screen came up saying there are critical errors, and showed dialog box like "The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE / SATA hard disks. It is recommended that you restart the system." etc.. To add further pain, whenever I do Google search and click one of results, it redirect to strange websites, and the desktop went completely blank with many files gone hidden. I have tried a scan using MBAM under safe mode and removed some culprits based on search results in MBAM, and ran "unhide" program that bring hidden files back to visible. Unfortunately after this, the file icons become hidden again for second time with black desktop background every time I boot the windows xp.I would appreciate if any of people here can help with this issue, and the degree of assistance is much greatly appreciated.

Here's the log I have ran under DDS:

Afternoon all, My desktop is a HP Pavilion with Win7 Home.
The pc boots up ok and after about 1 minute the Welcome page appears. After about another 30 sec's of the Welcome page the screen goes black. Nothing showing at all except the mouse pointer in the centre of the screen. The disk indicator light on the front of the pc is going mad. The screen is black for about 2 min's. then the desktop appears with all the icons. There is a further period of about 3 min's before I can get on line.
What I have done is:
Virus scan using Avast
Scanned with SAS,
Run CC
Scanned with Spybot S&D
Scaned with Malwarebytes anti malware
All the above are feebies.
System Restore. I didn't have much luck there because I got the message System restore failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. The restore point was damaged or deleted duribg the restore.
In Safe Mode I tried Repair My Computer. No Luck.
Using Task Manager and followed onscreen instructions resulting in looking online for an update to a driver. The result was that the most update driver was installed.
I can't help but feel there is a hardware issue here.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Answer:Black screen just before desktop appears.

You mention downloading a driver but fail to identify what the driver was for.
Another possibility is that you have a lot of software loading at start up.
Does the PC function correctly when it is up and running?
When you shut down the PC do you use the 'Shut Down' button or shut down from 'Sleep' by turning the PC power off? If the latter you will get the symptoms you describe as not only does the PC need to boot but it needs to load back to the point you turned it off.

I'm using Vista Home Premium. Last night I just got rid of a virus (Antivirus 2009) and installed a new antivirus program (avast). I restarted a couple times, then went into safe mode, then shut off the computer. This morning I couldn't get it to boot, not even in safe mode. Everytime, it would make it past the loading bars, and then the screen would turn black, and there would just be the cursor there, with the little loading circle flashing.

Can someone tell me what is wrong? Or at least, can someone tell me how to get around this and boot up my computer at least once so that I can try system restore?

Answer:Vista won't boot; black screen with cursor appears before log-in

At this point the only thing I would suggest is resetting your BIOS by clearing your CMOS jumper on the motherboard.

Hi, I'd be very grateful to you if you could help me fix my laptop.
In the middle of doing my work at the computer, the Windows XP keeps shutting down and I get this annoying blue screen background with white letters recommending among a several suggestions that I should try restarting my machine in Safe Mode and also consider removing some of my hardware or software that I have installed.
Having already removed some of the programs, this unfortunately hasn't prevented the Windows XP from its further continuous shutting down. First, it was shutting down every 1 to 2 hours, and now it's got even worse shutting down every 15 to 30 minutes on a regular basis.
My friend has asked me to reboot the system. But I don't want to lose all my software and files that I have all over my laptop, like in My Desktop, My Documents, Bookmarks, etc.
If I really have to reboot it, my question is How to save all my programs and files from losing or deletion?
Is there any other solution to this problem rather than rebooting the system?

Many thanks!!

Black Screen appears on returning from DOS to Windows!

While playing any DOS based game in Full Screen mode or while working on Turbo C++ in full sreen mode, when I return to windows, the screen turns black and no display can be seen. In the background, windows sounds like Logging off, etc. can be heard but the only problem is that the screen remains blacked-out. Ultimately I've to restart my system to resolve this error.
I also have the latest graphics drivers installed and I think that this problem started after I installed SP2. Please help so that I do not get a blacked out screen and also that I do not have to restart my system several times.
Thanks!

Hi all,

This morning when I tried to log-in to my computer as per usual, I was faced with a black screen and could only move my cursor.

I then tried to reformat my desktop with a USB, and it was going on well until the end where the black screen and cursor appeared once again.

I have seen some responses here/online and I have tried a variety of measures but to no avail.

I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Hi All, I kept having the same problem with my laptop. Its nearly 6 years since I've been using it and this is the first time I had a major issue with it. It started with some small like green colored objects alienating my screen. After awhile the screen turned to black and an error message showed up. (pictures attached). Then the laptop will automatically restart. When it does, it will get passed the windows logo and the screen will turn black however you can hear the welcome sound despite the black screen. I tried all the remedies I've seen in your support videos. I also restored the laptop to its out of state box several times already which I'm not sure is healthy although it does fix the error. But after quite some time, probably just 3 days max or oftentimes just a few hours later the same green objects will appear in my screen and the same problem will occur. I'm just baffled because everything seems to be working perfectly with the laptop since I can still access it but only on a safe mode (I'm actually posting this on a safe mode with networking option). I refuse to send it to a technician and I really want to fix the issue on my own. Unfortunately, I can't really tell what's causing the problem. I would be extremely grateful to all of your input on fixing this error. Kind Regards,

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. So, these are my problems described in the title. I cannot change desktop from black, only can set a picture as a background.

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I attached a print screen photo.

And, I am hopeless, any help please? Thanks

Answer:Windows 7 black screen, black or blank thumbnails, and black desktop themes

I noticed you're not running Aero. Click on last item, left side - "Troubleshoot problems with transparency...."

Office 2010 should not be a factor here. Public pics folder is empty - it should have sample pics in it.

So I am having this problem.

1. When I switch on the laptop, Windows starts up and until the choice to select the user account. After that the desktop doesn't show, just black screen.

2. Next I try to switch off the laptop to restart again, the lights on the laptop corresponding to charging, boot etc are on, but now it shows just black screen not even showing the loading bar for Windows.

This happens for numerous times, and after long hours (probably 12 hours to a day) when I startup again, number "1" happens and number "2" follows.

I was once able to start into safe mode (after waiting the long hours period) and now the desktop is being shown after entering into a user account. But after another restart it doesn't even show the start screen to press f2 to boot into safe mode, just black screen.

Today I restarted again and after selecting a user account, I could see the desktop being minimized and everywhere else black screen. I tried to boot again and number "2" happens. It's going to take some time before I can boot into safe mode itself.

Could someone be kind enough to help me?

Have XP Pro SP3. My screen goes black every ten mins, I have to use space bar for it to come
back. Could it be PCHealth asking for collection of data? Have no clue, can you help pls

Answer:Black screen every ten mins.

If it seems to be exactly every ten minutes of inactivity (no mouse or no keyboard input), then I would check the Power Settings.

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options and check the Turn off monitor (and other) settings.

If it is exactly ten minutes and set to After 10 mintues, change it to After 20 minutes or Never and see if that makes a difference.

Also right click some empty place on the desktop, Properties, Screen Save - what is that time set to?

Adjust as needed!

Hello!
It seems Win8.1 doesn't like my old graphic card drivers like Win8 did.
In many cases when turn on my machine it boots to desktop but it doesn't show it - it just shows my mouse cursor and pure black background. When i click the power button tho, the desktop pops up for a second then the shutting down screen appears. After few reboots i finally managed to get to the desktop and use my computer (chances are 1:5 reboots lol).

I followed some tutorials i found on the internetz , explaining how sometimes ATI and NET framework 3.5 doesn't work together - this is not the case 'cause i tried following this tutorial to uninstall , clean and reinstall the latest drivers available for my crappy videocard + NET framework. Didn't worked...

I noticed something interesting while booting to Windows.
IF there will be black screen with cursor - the boot time takes 1-2 seconds, IF everything will be alright - the boot process will take about 25 seconds. (just thought i should tell you this as well)

And finally here's my configuration:
Pentium 4 , 3.2GHz
ATI Radeon X550
2GB DDR2 RAM

I'll be grateful if someone helps me solve this problem. Thanks in advance!
Note: PLEASE save your comments that i need a new PC. I know that!

Answer:Vista black screen when about to boot into desktop?

The HP Website has the following support article:

? HP Notebook PCs - Black Screen Appears for 2 Minutes after Welcome Screen Displays - c01271669 This document describes what to do if the notebook display shows black screen for a prolonged period of time after the welcome screen displays.

See: HP Notebook PCs*-* Black Screen Appears for 2 Minutes after Welcome Screen Displays*In short, it says to update the Recovery Manager program. Did it. Didn't work.

I then came across a posting that stated that the same problem had been fixed by removing a special character from the computer name. The Costco Concierge techs who re-installed the OS on my machine last week gave it the name "Owner-PC" and I hadn't bothered to rename it yet. I thought it was a long shot that renaming my machine would fix the 90+ second black screen between the Welcome page and Desktop, but it worked. I gave my machine a name with no spaces or special characters and the "fix" seems to be permanent.

For a few days I have been having some problems with my computer. Whenever I shutdown properly and then start again, the Desktop loads fine and after a few seconds of coming to the desktop. I see a black screen in front of me, I try to press num lock on and off to see if the system froze, it indeed froze. I disabled fastboot, after that even if I start after shutdown, it boots fine.

If I restart, it boots fine. Not sure why as my system should be fully compatible with fast boot. Here is my system specs, everything is updated as of posting:

Hey mate,

Can you notice the same issue on an external monitor or does this happen only on internal one? Furthermore it would be interesting to know what display driver you have installed and if you are using the preinstalled OS.
By the way, display driver update could be also useful in this case.

It?s really hard to say what is causing this problem and in worst case it?s a hardware issue and something must be replaced. :(

Hi guys
recently I've noticed if i lock my pc and then unlock when i come back to my workstation, a dark grey square with inactive arrows appears in the top left of the screen, i cant move it, click on it or close it! It doesn't seem to have any "always on top" setting as i can put any program or explorer window above it and it stays happily on the desktop behind the window.
A restart of the PC removes it but that's not always practical to do
Have a look at the screenshot attached and let me know what you think it could be and how i can remove it!
Thanks

Answer:Black Rectangle appears on desktop after locking PC

It would appear an tray application or some background app you have is not loading properly when you unlock the machine. It's possible the act of locking it actually causes the problem with the specific program in question.
If it happens all the time I would guess it's something in your startup programs.

If you go to the search box and type msconfig and hit enter then go over to the startup tab, could you screen and post that ... just the one tab.

Answer:window 7 ultimate sp1 crash & boot at black screen but no desktop

As far as I can think, you probably haven't tried using System Restore function because you can't boot even with safe mode.

Use your Windows installation DVD to boot your system, once you reach the setup screen, click on 'Repair this computer' at the bottom left. Now select 'System Restore' from advanced recovery options and restore your system to a point before this started happening.

Ask back if you have any query.
Hope that helps.

Hello there. I have a dv7 notebook with Win 7 Home Premium installed on it. Everything is running fine, except a couple of days ago the notebook began to take too damn long to boot up when restarting or just when powering it on.

I noticed it gets "stuck" on a black screen, just like a blank DOS screen, for about 2 minutes before booting up Windows.

I have tried downloading new BIOS from HP website, resetting the BIOS settings, changing the boot order but nothing really works. It always stays on the black screen for around two minutes and then Windows boots up normally. No text is shown, nothing at all.

Does anyone has any clues on what it could be?

Thanks!!!

Answer:Notebook stuck for 2 mins on black screen before booting up

You may have a driver problem.

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? If your computer starts OK then, we can start investigating why it's not starting normally.

To get into Safe Mode tap the F8 key at startup. In case you're wondering, when you run in Safe Mode you're not loading drivers.

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and after I start it up and enter my password to login to windows I have to wait another 10-15 minutes for my desktop to appear. It's just a black screen, but the kicker is that I can move my mouse and see it on screen. I've never heard of or seen anything like this before.

Anyone know what's causing this or how to fix it?

Answer:Laptop stays at Black screen for 10+ mins after logging in

How old is the laptop? Is it still under warranty? What you are describing sounds like the LCD is going bad.

So, a friend of mine asked me to take a look at her computer, but I am at a loss. It persistently and consistently takes between 10 and 20 minutes of blank screen after hitting the Novo button or the power button before anything appears on the screen. The Novo button reaches the bios with no problems and after booting to the OS, the system performs decently. Any ideas? Edit: Keyboard is backlit instantly after hitting either button.

Startup takes forever and it takes even longer for my browsers to open. You guys did an amazing job helping me fix my laptop troubles I'm following the information in my other thread, but the information posted there is for help with my laptop running on Vista. The problem I'm having now is with my desktop running on XP Home. I attached an autorun.txt and posted some SpeedFan stats for starters.1.50 GB of RAMOS C Properties: 15.6 GB of Used Space21.5 GB OF Free SpaceSpeedFanWin9x:NO 64Bit:NO GiveIO:YES SpeedFan:YESI/O properly initializedLinked ISA BUS at $0290Linked Intel 82801DB ICH4 SMBUS at $E000Scanning ISA BUS at $0290...SuperIO Chip=LPC47m172Sensor's Base Address : $06C0Scanning Intel SMBus at $E000...LM85B (ID=$62) found on SMBus at $2EFound WDC WD400EB-11CPF0 on AdvSMARTEnd of detectionCPU 48CInternal Temp 43CRemote Temp 43C

Answer:Desktop takes 7-10 mins to boot

Take a look at the Logon tab of Autoruns (not the view you took a picture of, which lists everything).Post the items listed on the Logon tab of Autoruns as beginning at boot. You can use the Print Screen key of your keyboard...to take a picture and post that in lieu of typing everything.Upload the graphic as an attachment. To create and post a screenshot:Press the Print Scrn button to copy your entire screen to the Windows clipboard.Press Alt-Print Scrn to copy just the active window to the Windows clipboard.Open MS Paint (Start/All Programs/Accessories/Paint).When Paint opens, press CTRL-V to paste the clipboard, then save the new Paint file to your desktop or someplace you can remember. JPG files take up less hard disk space than BMP files and are just as readable. There is a file size limitation for uploading attachments to posts here. Make as many screenshots as you need to get a decent graphic which viewers can easily see.If you have a graphics editor of any type installed, you should use it in lieu of MS Paint to adjust the size of the graphic and change the format to .jpg.Louis

hi,
I have an IBM P4 desktop pc, and everything seems fine with it, except that at one point it started "pausing" for 15 miutes in the boot process, right between the "press F1 for boot device selection" and the windows startup screen.

after the 15 minutes the systems resumes normally.

the other funny part is that if after it does its 15 minute thing and boots up, if i restart right after it will not do it again! but if i unplug the power and wait 2 minutes then plug it back in it will.

it seems to me like it is running an extended boot test or something but i could not figure what option would be causing that in the bios if that is the case... i tried many things.

any ideas appreciated.
Joe.

Hi, I have an office desktop pc (HP COMPAQ ELITE 8100) running 64-bit Windows 7. I was manually running Windows update and manually updating some of my drivers when the pc suddenly turned itself off.

I turned it back on and now it doesn't get to the login screen anymore. It just displays a black screen with a movable mouse cursor although I can't really click anything or even press any keys on the keyboard.

I tried loading into the recovery environment but it only gives me the option to restore my hard drive to factory settings, which I don't want since I have lots of important files in it.

I've searched around the forums but I can't find a problem that is EXACTLY like mine.

By the way, my pc is on a dual boot mode with an Ubuntu 11.10 and that is how I'm able to access this forum right now. The dual boot was set-up by the employee that I replaced so I have no idea how this is set-up.
Any help would be appreciated!
-Ron

I tried resetting the CMOS to reset the the BIOS but still nothing is displaying on the screen.

I detached the hard drive and booted it up and still the black screen.

If there is a method i should try please let me know .

Do you get any indicator lights that the system is booting besides a black screen?

Are there any lights on the monitor?

Try shining a light to the screen what do you see?

Pressing the screen side buttons for menu does the online display come on?

Try resetting the bios once more. This time completely remove the power cord and press the power on button to clear any voltages left in the system, then clear the cmos/bios pulling the battery. Put the battery back in and reconnect the power and boot it.

Answer:H515s desktop won't boot or recover! Black screen/Lenovo logo and BIOS only.

Hey there. It seems like the Windows partition may be corrupted. You need to contact Lenovo support for a recovery disk so that your computer can get back to normal. However, if you are out of warranty, you can create a Windows 8.1 disk at this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media. You want to use a different computer to do this, and use a flash drive larger than 4GB. Then, when you boot into your computer that's having issues, you want to press F11 or F12 once it turns on. Then, go to boot setup, make sure CSM is on, and choose your USB drive as the boot option.

I cannot get to my desktop as this black screen is preventing me to do so.

It doesn't even give me enough time to log in!
It happened once before but it magically started to work the other time.
This never happened when I was still using the stock 640GB HDD that the laptop came with. So maybe I'm thinking it's because of my SSD having problems?

Fortunately, I can still get to Safe Mode and it says I got a BSOD and here's some details that it showed:

BCCode: d1
BCP1: 0000000000000010
BCP2: 0000000000000002
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: FFFFF8800170F5D6

I went to Event Viewer and took a look on what made my computer mess up and it says that winlogon.exe and Explorer. initiated the restart of my computer and said there was no reason for it.

Hi, We have a Lenovo H420 desktop that takes over 3 mins to boot up. After you switch it on, the monitor displays a black screen with 'Lenovo' in white writing and remains with this screen for minutes on end seemingly doing nothing (hard drive cannot be heard working and it's activity light doesn't flash). After about 3 minutes Windows 7 suddenly loads in a matter of seconds. Any ideas what is wrong? Is this normal? We've only had this computer for about 3 months and it has been doing it since we bought it. We reset the computer back to its factory settings but that hasn't changed anything. Bios doesn't seem to be accessible as no startup screen saying press del for setup etc shows. Kaspersky and Malwarebytes doesn't show any nasties. Thanks

Hi WEB1 and welcome to the community,

Here's your Hardware Maintenance Manual . On page 16, it shows how to get into the Setup Utility Program.

Check the configuration, it might be set to do a memory check or something before booting.

Do you have anything plugged in to USB, like an external hard drive, a phone, a flash drive that it might be trying to boot from?

After installing some Lenovo upgrades, a long narrow horizontal bar appeared near the bottom of my screen and could not be deleted. It had a picture of a speaker on the left, a horizontal white line al;ong the middle and "50" at the right. I was unable to find any guidance on this problem on this site but eventually solved the problem by removing the tick against the Lenovo "On screen display" Startup task using msconfig. There is a software fault here that needs to be fixed. I am posting this in case anyone else has the same problem. My laptop is a SL500 running Vista Busness Edition 32-bit.

So, I have nokia lumia 900, that after some time of trouble free use got black screen. Firstly, restart would briefly help, but after some use it went black again. But after 3-4 restarts, that didn't work either, screen got king of distorted during start up and turn itself off. So I kind of gave up on that phone (it was already old, and I was sure it was screen issue, and screen replacement is almost as expensive as the phone itself), but later I decided to sent it to service. And all they did (as far as I know) was reinstal system. And it worked, phone was fine again. For maybe 2 months. Than same problem again. This time, service guy replaced screen (wasn't as exspensive as i tought). And it worked fine again...for maybe a month...but than again black screen started to happen.
But this time, after restart, phone worked fine until I locked it and left it a bit (with screen off ofcourse)...band after that it wouldn't turn up again. Of course, everything else was working, touch, sounds etc.
I tried lumia recovery, it reverted system to wp 7.5. And after restart during recovery, this time even date and time was wrong (year 1980, some date, and time ! in the morning). Automatic adjustment, manual...no difference, it just went back to it's 80's night-time. And again, after lock and screen off, it will not turn screen again until restarted.
So, anyone have any idea what is actual problem? I was sure that it was hardware, but why would that happen after some time of use... Of cou... Read more

Please help!

The problem occurs when I try to turn on the machine from a cold start up. Restarting the machine has a normal operation time. During the time the Laptop is trying to boot and reach the lenovo splashscreen, the power LED stays on and the keyboard backlight remains illuminated. Toggling the Caps lock key is unresponsive in toggling the caps lock led indicator at this time. I also tried plugging in an external monitor to see if it that was the issue.

I have tried swapping HDD with no success with another HDD from a lenovo Thinkpad, and from another Lenovo y580. The HDD from my y580 boots on either machine with no problem. HDD from either machine into my Y580 did not improve the boot time response.

When the y580 is trying to reach the splash screen, if I plug in the AC adapter, the machine emits one audio beep.

I have tried booting with and without AC adapter and with and without battery input. All combinations yield long boot times.

Boot times in general can vary from 5 mins to 15 mins. I downloaded lenovo solution center and ran the hardware scan and there was no issue with the mobo or the graphics card.

Getting to the 'Lenovo' splashscreen takes around 15 mins. Afterwards, Windows 8.1 loads with no problem and the system is very responsive. Games and applications run smoothly. My solution was to keep the computer in hibernation mode when not in use. After m... Read more

I already did this.Black Screen Hang (after splash screen appears) (usually video driver)- Last Known Good Configuration- Safe Mode- install/reinstall latest version of video drivers. I downloaded the latest video driver and installed it. But the black screen hang still keeps on happening. Please Help

Answer:Black Screen Hang (after splash screen appears)

What happens when you try to get into Safe Mode? The next most common issue for black screen hangs is a problem with the hard drive. You can try these commands from the Recovery Console ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-install-the-windows-xp-recovery-console/ )They will attempt to correct issues with the File System on your hard drive.FIXMBRFIXBOOTCHKDSK /RIf that does not fix it, then I'd suggest a bootable diagnostic available from the manufacturer of your hard drive. There's a list of the most common one's in this thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/28744/hard-drive-installation-and-diagnostic-tools/ The diagnostic will tell you if your hard drive is starting to fail (or not).

Hi to all EightForums.
today I installed Windows 8 64bits Pro with mediacenter. my problem is very familiar, black screen appears. but its appears only when I restart the computer. and in one thing I m in luck that in black screen if I simply press the power button (which I set to shut down) computer going to shut down and on pressing again its start normally and desktop appears only in 5 seconds. (takes just 5 second after the dell logo, and this is the charming thing I like on win 8). I seen many articles and threads that out of date video driver causing this. but win 8 install my laptop all drivers by it own. but as a precaution, I download again win 8 64bits driver from support.dell.com site. and again I m in luck that dell also have the win 8 64bits drivers for this laptop. but when I install this driver windows says newer driver already install.
any suggestion would be very appreciated.

I have been having this super annoying problem with my windows 8.1 laptop, and I can't remember when it started but it has gotten worse. there is this black box that pops up on the the screen every 2 min. (NOT LYING I HAVE SERIOUSLY TIMED IT) Anyway the
only thing I have seen so far was it says SYSTEM 32 in the green bar on top. Now where this really bothers me is when I'm in full screen mode, watching a movie ,playing a game and so on it just minimizes to the taskbar and I have to open it from there, otherwise
if I'm in windowed mode this "black box" still pops up but doesn't minimize the program.
Usually I would try and figure this out myself but I have gotten nowhere, and the internet has LITERALLY got nothing and the frustration is killing me, so please I need some ADVISE.

Hi,

I am a new member so hope you can help me. I have a very annoying problem. My computer screen will just go blank (totally black) for about a second and then will return to normal. I also have problems with the mouse cursor freezing up for a second or two. I should say that I am not very technical.

It doesn't appear to be a monitor issue. I have reformated the hardrive and reloaded windows XP and it is still doing it. Is it a hardware issue do you think or could it be a virus. I installed SP2 before connecting to the web and the first thing I downloaded was AVG antivirus. Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thank you

Is it possible to turn the displays off after 10 minutes of inactivity, but for the display to lock only after 30 minutes of inactivity? The numbers are examples, but probably close to what I'd set.

I'm keen to save power, but having a short inactivity period, but I don't want to be entering my password all the time.

Answer:Turn off display after 10 mins; lock desktop after 30 mins?

You can use the power saver options to turn the screen off after a certain amount of time.

Even if the monitor is turned off due to inactivity, you can also set a screen saver to blank screen after the same about of time that you used in the power options to turn off the monitor. Put a check by the "On resume, display logon screen". Then add a delay between the time that the screen saver comes on and the time that the computer locks:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"ScreenSaverGracePeriod"="1111"
You can change the 1111 to any number between 0 seconds and 2,147,483 seconds.
If you would rather not use the screen saver method...
...you could use a scheduled task that triggers after an idle period:

Code:
rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

Hi my name is colin, I have a Toshiba P10 laptop and I want to change my power settings ie.

I use it for my karaoke but if a song is more than five min long blank screen. Tapping mouse pad restores it.
Can somebody please tell me what to do.

Answer:Satellite P10: Black screen appears after 5min

Hi Colin,

You need to change the settings in the Toshiba Power setup not in the Microsoft version.

You should normally see both options in 'Control Panel' but if you select the Microsoft setup then all the options will 'grey out' when you hover the mouse pointer over them.

The Toshiba power options should also be accessible from 'Control panel' but if not you can access them from 'Start -> All Programs'.

Hello all, Whenever my fingers are on the keyboard, touchpad, screen, or surface of the keyboard, the screen blacks out completely. Every time light pressure is added, even a gentle tap, the screen blacks out. Music continues to play on the laptop even when the screen is black, and if I'm typing, all of the text that I entered while the screen is black remains. Occasionally, by applying pressure to either the bottom left or right corners of the keyboard surface, the screen remains. But even so, slight changes to my hand positions are enough to make the screen black out again.I recently sent in my laptop to Lenovo repair services due to a wifi connection-related problem, but I don't think this could be connected in any way. If anyone has experienced this before or is aware of how to fix the problem, it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Normally the battery saving mode (stand by) has nothing to with that. On my Satellite L300 it works properly and I often use this mode.

Anyway, it would be interesting to know if you can see a picture on an external monitor. Maybe the FL inverter of internal monitor is faulty and so it doesn’t show a picture… Who knows?! ?:|

Yesterday my PC was working perfect. Zero problems. I shut it off for the night, then turn it on this morning. The BIOS image appears, and then it goes to a black screen. I can't do *anything*. I've tried putting in the Windows disc to try repairing, but it won't let me boot to the disc. There's never any option to. Any help in resolving this issue would be much appreciated.

What could cause this?
Can this be related to security?
I have a turn monitor off shortcut, created with nircmd. Can it be related to that?
(No, it doesn?t happen when I use the shortcut, it is on the desktop. It happens, when I turn the mouse wheel sometimes).

Answer:Monitor goes black and login screen appears

What do you mean by "locks the screen?"

Does the lock screen come on or does the machine freeze (or just become unusable) and you need to hard reboot it?

Sounds like it could be a TDR issue, but we'll see about your response.

Vista - Screen/Monitor Problem

I just upgraded to vista about 3 weeks ago, and everything was working fine. I shut my computer off a couple nights ago and when i went to turn it on it went through the regular start-up, and Welcome screen, and then went black. I had an error message that popped up (i will turn the computer on to check what it said and will post it) but everything behind the message was still black.

When i turn the computer on in safe mode the screen works fine. Is there a way for me to see what the problem is in safe mode? I backed up everything, but my recovery disk 1 isn't working (i dont now if it is the computer or the disk, so before i buy new disks i want to see if there is anything that could be done to fix it).

Does anyone recognize this problem? Please Help!

Answer:Vista - After Welcome screen appears, moniter goes black!

HI sdouce4

You mention that your Recovery Disks don't work -- does that mean that you have attempted a Recovery using those Disks since your problem with the monitor appeared? That could complicate things a little, since such recoveries tend to overwrite areas of the hard drive.

If you haven't tried the Recovery Disks yet, or if you started to, but the recovery was aborted by either you or some error message, then you might still be able to troubleshoot & repair things from the PCs current state.

2 Quick-Fix tries:

Quick-Fix #1
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode.
2) Right-click on a blank area of your desktop, and select "Properties"
3) In the "Settings" tab, select "Advanced"
4) Look for a "Monitor" tab (the Advanced Settings can vary depending on what graphics card is in your computer)
5) In the Monitor tab, look for a selection area for refresh-rate -- make sure it is a rate supported by your monitor.

(you can do the same for the 'resolution' setting)

Quick-Fix #2
1) Boot your computer into Safe Mode.
2) Use System Restore, selecting a restore point from before your display problem. You can find System Restore by navigating: Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. (You can also simply type "System Restore" in the 'Start Search' box on the Vista Start Menu, and press Enter).

Today I decided to try out Windows 8, and found the free trial of Windows 8 Enterprise at MSDN. I used the upgrade assistant downloaded to install windows 8, and had to choose the option that deleted my previous files, since the original upgrade option was apparently not compatible with my windows. The installation started, and after the second-reboot my computer got stuck on a "getting ready" screen. It then restarted again, but this time would go into a loop where a screen would pop up saying my computer "restarted unexpectedly or has encountered an unexpected error." After clicking "OK" and the computer restarting, the Windows 8 logo with the spinning circle below appears for a few seconds, then my screen turns black (completely black), and then goes to being back-lit, but still being black. I can't put the CD in to try to re-install windows, since this was a digital download. I also read on other topics that putting the computer to sleep and then waking it up again will fix this, but I can't put the computer to sleep when I have no interface to work with. I thought this might be a result of my graphics card, so I reverted to the onboard car through the BIOS with no luck. I've tried booting in safe mode with no luck, and can only seem to get into the BIOS.

Do you have restore CDs to go back to the original OS? If so, that's where I'd start, then you could try the installation again.

Also, somewhere in the upgrade assistant, it provides the option to burn a disc or make a flash drive to boot off of. Once you get the original OS back on, create a bootable disc for Windows 8.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on an MSI X320 netbook. This is the second time this happened. What happened the first time, was that the computer froze and was completely unresponsive. I waited for about four minutes and listened for any sort of activity coming from the computer (noise from the hard drive) I heard virtually nothing, and decided to force a reboot. After the reboot, and once i had logged in to my profile, it immediately displayed a debug text file. I did not save it, because everything seemed to be running fine again otherwise. I ran it yesterday with no problems at least over 24 hours.Just a moment ago, it happened again, only this time the screen went entirely black. The computer was still on, but completely unresponsive, so again, I forced a reboot. This time, however, before taking me to the login screen, it recommended I run a check disk. I allowed it to do so, and it found no disk errors, but I was unable to read the entire thing before it it closed and loaded windows. Once again, after logging in, it popped up the debug text file again. The file is EXTREMELY long, and I couldn't fit the entire thing in here, but this is the beginning:[1025/155403:WARNING:backend_impl.cc(1609)] Messed up entry found.[1025/155403:WARNING:backend_impl.cc(1895)] Destroying invalid entry.[1025/155410:WARNING:backend_impl.cc(1895)] Destroying invalid entry.[1025/191103:WARNING:dns_config_service_win.cc(481)] Failed to read DnsConfig.[1025/191113:WARNING:dns_config_service_wi... Hi, I hope someone can help!

My Vista laptop goes to a black screen when it boots, after the 'Microsoft Corporation' ticker thing. Oddly though, it seems to still be running windows, just not showing me anything! If I leave it to boot, then use the Windows key and arrow keys to navigate to where I know the 'sleep' or 'shut down' options are, they work!

In safe mode it appears to stop loading drivers on 'crcdisk.sys', but does the same as above (whilst still showing the frozen driver loading screen, carries on loading windows in the background).

I have scanned the HD in a dock on another computer and it is healthy.

I have tried system restore using a Vista installation CD, no change.

All the other options to repair Windows etc on the Vista CD don't fix it.

I'm at a loss! I can access my data via another computer but I really need the laptop for my job!

Any ideas? Google yields lots of black screens, but none where it keep running in the background!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop boots to black screen, but appears to run in background

Answer:Black Screen Windows 7 Desktop

Sounds like a summary of all the reasons for NOT buying "2d-hand" systems with older components, IMO.

Did you see this system in a functional state...before you acquired it?

Did you buy it from a person you know...or from some "business entity" who wanted to exchange it for money?

Is this a system coming off-lease? If so, you should have a 60-day warranty period.

What "battery" are you referring to?

Hello,

I turned my computer on this morning to find the following:

The screen - or desktop - is just black, there are no icons, nothing. There is no way to access Windows 7 or my computer other than through one window frame which opened that allows me to access all of the files on my computer.

Windows 7 obviously must still be running, otherwise i wouldn't be able to use my computer, It starts fine everytime, showing "Preparing your desktop" and all that, but once it's supposed to show desktop, there is just nothing, it's as if it's just not there anymore. It's just black.

I can still do anything I want, show movies, listen to music, work on MS Word, etc.

Any help is appreciated!

Answer:Screen goes black Windows 7 not available on desktop

"Preparing your desktop" is only showed on first logon to an account!
"one window frame which opened ". Is that the standard file explorer frame?
What happens if you double click on c:\windows\explorer.exe ?

I have a IdeaPad Y560. We have had a strange problem for some time that I'm not sure how to solve. The laptop works fine once you've booted into windows but for some reason pressing F2 or F12 to either enter the boot or setup menu does not work. The screen simply goes black and stays that way. It is almost like I'm in the bios but can't see it on the screen. I have update the bios via the OS without a problem but the issue remains.

Answer:Ideapad y560 will not boot to bios(Black Screen) but will boot to windows 10 and function normally

Same here...the problem started with me trying to update to windows 10.. Initially the update didnt work and i got reverted back to windows 7.. Later, however, i downloaded the win 10 ISO manualy and was succesful in updating to a Windows 10.. Within a couple of days however, all I got was a blank screen on booting to windows(the lenovo and BIOS worked currently until that time). So, I made a live win 10 DVD and reset my installation to a fresh install (kept my files). The installation aborted mid way.. Then, I had to reinstall freshly without keeping my files..Now, Win 10 works alrite but then while trying to go to my BIOS menu, nothing happens and I just get booted straight to the Windows environment..Can someone tell me what happened?

Hey everyone.

So I've been having this issue where my computer won't boot up into the login screen for Win Xp. It simply posts, goes to the Windows loading screen, and just as it's suppose to display the users and login page, the screen just goes black. I can however get into safemode, but it simply won't boot on the regular startup.

I believe it's another system or boot file error that has malware as I've had a previous thread years ago with a similar issue, but need some assistance. Any thgouhts? What info can I get for you to take a peek? -Jeff
PS: I will post the event viewer as soon as I get home from work.

Hello all,

Recently I have wired to screens up as dual screens, they were working fine at day 1 but after the left screen (main monitor) has started turning itself off completely.
As soon as I boot, the screen goes black and I am greeted with the screen startup logo, then "no signal detected" Windows will only pick up the one screen (right monitor) until I restart the screen from the plug. My main monitor is connected via HDMI from the GPU into the screen, and the other DVI to HDMI adapter, again from the GPU, The weird thing is no matter what I try, it will always be the left screen, I have tried:

Swapping the screen over with another
Changing plug sockets,
System Refresh
Swapping screen power supplies
installing drivers
swapping HDMI cables

I can only assume it's something to do with Windows, but what is it?

Any help would be much appreciated,
Cheers,

I have problem with my laptop Satellite L850-F313, when I start up my laptop a black screen comes after Windows welcome I see black screen for 2 or 3 mins until desktop appears.

I thought the black screen came from Microsoft issue but when I contacted them they told me I have to check with Toshiba because this issue can be solve by Toshiba.

Could you please help me?

Answer:Black screen appears 2-3 min long on Satellite L850-F313

Could you attach an external monitor to the notebook and could you check if something would be visible on the external monitor?

You said that after short time (2/3min) the desktop would appear… well, to me this means that the system need some time to finish the booting procedure.

Probably the issue is related only to some system problems and therefore I could recommend you to perform an Toshiba recovery procedure and to check the notebook functionality using fresh recovered system.

I don’t know what windows system was preinstalled on this notebook but usually you could use the own created recovery medium in order to start the recovery process or you could use the HDD recovery procedure… the details should be described in notebook user manual.

I got a custom Laptop with the following characteristics:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit , SP1
Processor: Intel Core i3-2330M [email protected] GHz
RAM: 4GB
Graphics: Intel HD 3000 & GeForce GT540M (2GB)

So a few days ago when I tried to update the Intel HD 3000 through the Device Manager, a better version was found and started installing it. Suddenly the screen turned to black!
I turned off the laptop and booted in safe mode. I opened Device Manager again and I saw that Intel HD 3000 was replaced by "Standard VGA Adapter"...So I uninstalled it and rebooted again in safe mode and Intel HD 3000 was installed automatically. But the problem was not solved and the same would happen if I tried to update again the Intel HD card through Device Manager.
Generally I have googled very much about this problem but no results. I have downloaded the driver from Intel website to try it manually and again it fails to install.

But here is where it gets more strange:

Nvidia card is supposed to be up-to-date since when I click in Device manager to search online for drivers the message says there is not newer version. But there is not even a sign in my laptop that it is "alive". I mean that I cant even find Nvidia's control panel when I right-click in Desktop or near clock or at my Control Panel...I think thats not normal too.
So I downloaded the appropriate driver from Nvidia website, started installing it and an error appeared: "NVIDIA Installer cannot c... Read more

I've seen similar problems but I haven't found any solution yet. After I bootup my desktop shows then after a few minutes it turns into a black screen with cursor only. Ctrl+alt+delete is working and I managed to get into file explorer by "open file location" in task manager>processes.

I tried checking updates for windows but I am updated, I tried reinstalling my amd driver for windows 10 and tried the method windows+p-down-down-enter since I saw in other threads that windows 10 "detects" two monitors due to two graphic cards.

Edit: Same thing happens in safe mode
Edit 2: I think some services of windows exits and I can't pinpoint what. Even the keyboard shortcuts like volume doesn't work except for brightness.
Edit 3: Images below is the only way I get to my apps, I just right click on this pc then properties to get to control panel.

I have updated Xp home to Vista Home Basic (old version) and downloaded SP1. My problem is when moving an open application across my desktop I get a black screen lock up. This has happened with my creative console and my X-fire program on a number of occasions. I just grab the program and move it out of the way and the O/S blacks out and I have to do a Hard restart. Hope someone has an a clue of what is up thanks.

I have 2 hard disks, 80 Gb and 500 gb which are both compatible with the rest of the computer.

The OS was initially installed in the 80GB drive and was working fine till I got a message on startup saying it had failed the S.M.A.R.T test and crash was imminent. So I loaded XP onto the the 500GB disk and removed the 80GB disk. Everything was working fine except on start up I was given two OS to boot from, the second one now obsolete since the disk was removed.

So I entered the System Configuration Utility and using the "Check All Boot Paths", (made a system restore point before this) deleted the option that no longer was in use and rebooted the system. Except that upon loading desktop it rebooted within a minute.
I tried restoring using system restore but the same problem continued. So I tried repairing my installation using the Windows XP CD. After it did a repair, and upon boot and installing in place of the 'Welcome' screen, the screen turns black. However I have control over the mouse pointer. But Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Ctrl-Esc or right click, nothing of this sort works. Even booting in safe mode leads to the same result, except the black screen has 'Safe Mode' written in the corners.

Kindly advise, using Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Answer:Windows XP welcome screen black, not loading desktop.

It sounds like your system is already set to boot from CD. Perhaps you should try reinstalling Windows on the new drive. That way your MSCONFIG issues would be settled, the OS would now recognize your new configuration, and it sounds like you might have a video issue although it could just be a corrupt install. I'd suggest trying a reinstall of XP.

Good day.

Mike

Answer:Windows XP welcome screen black, not loading desktop.

First pull out the 80 gig hard drive, and see if it boots with just the 500gb drive by itself, If not, Insert the windows CD, reboot press a button to boot from CD. Skip the first repair option the next time it talks about repair do that one. You should see two partitions, a big one and a smaller one, select the larger of them to repair. The computer will fix the os and then reboot this time do not press the any key and just let it boot. I think what you may have happened is you had an backup windows on the 500gig, and pointed the boot to boot that os. Also if you have a damaged Hard drive, and even if you are not booting from it, having the corrupt or laggy hd will lead to boot issues,

I installed the Windows 10 download last night and everything seemed to go smoothly...until the log-in screen came up. I logged in with my password, hit enter - got the "welcome" and it transitioned to a black screen with no icons, no background, no task bar. The cursor is active and movable, left and right clicks do nothing. The only thing that shows is my Comodo "Secure" notification box in the top right-hand corner. I've attempted to (by shutdown and restarting) to get to a desktop without success. I then tried a Safe Mode start by waiting for the log-in page, holding Shift, and using the power icon at the bottom of the log-in page to restart. I was successful, at first. Was able to do a reset, and re-install windows 10....my desktop came up and I thought all was good. But when I restarted after downloading my Chrome browser (which had been removed during the reset/reinstall, the same thing happened - after log-in, no desktop, icons, etc. I was going to do a Safe Mode again, but the log-in page now has only two icons at the bottom instead of three. Originally, there was a "connect to the internet" icon; a 'ease of access" icon, and a "power" icon with choice of restart, shutdown, sleep. Now there are only two icons...the connect & ease of icons. So I can't even get into Safe Mode now. I went to the microsoft support page....they have a 200 minute wait for call-backs and similar wait for...
