Can I intergrate Windows.old files?

Question: Can I intergrate Windows.old files?

I recently updated my OS. All my documents like music, pictures and files are there correctly. Some of my old game and programs like Steam booting correctly because they are in the Windows.old file because of the new OS. I was wondering if there is anyway I can just integrate these files so it would act like my computer previously, but just with the updated OS. Would a simple copy and paste of the Program Files/Program Files (x86) ect over the current ones work? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Can I intergrate Windows.old files?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can I intergrate Windows.old files?

Windows.old file contains everything from a previous Windows install. You can not copy and paste old programs. They have to be installed to get the required entries into the registry in order to work. You can copy personal files that you missed backing up before the new install.

I am following a guide on how to customise windows 10. I have at least my storage drivers since they are compatible between windows 7 & 10. I have a copy of windows 10 pro and an activation code. I'm using NTlite to customise the .wim files. However the guy who wrote the guide said my question on how to use this script in my install was better asked elsewhere.

FYI this is the guide I speak of:

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include
.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

Hi- TPlease help me with my laptop.

The computer has been acting weird lately. Everything runs SO slow. I have run a few scans but did not do any repairs or any quarantines. I did a System Restore 3 days ago and the problems continue. In Jan 2014 I had a tech site help me with the following problemsossible malware/virus=Websearch. Searchnewtab, keyword Hijacker, safesaverBHO, searchwebs, statcounter, zedo. I changed my internet provider and didnt have service for over a month so the site didnt help me finish the troubleshooting. Im not sure if these things are still on the computer.

1. MBam showed this in registry files: PUP.Optional.Tarma.
2. HijackThis showed 9 of these files: Unknown file in Winsock LSP c:\windows\system32\wpdsp.dll

3. Windows Update - When I check for updates, it does a 5sec check and comes back with a message saying . "Updates can't be installed while Windows is running so you should save your work, close any open programs, and then restart your computer to finish the update process. The computer will reboot and 10 sec later a notification pops up saying that I need to update. Nothing ever updates. The process repeats over and over."
The only Windows updates that show since 8/13/2013 are: Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials, which never used to show in Windows Updates! It shows Most recent check for updates: Never and Updates installed: Never. I know there has been updates and something is blocking them.

This is in regards to files disappearing and my desktop changing. I downloaded and installed Windows 10 last night but did not do any modifications until this morning. When I started my computer today, I couldn't find my files. I found them in my user profile. So I moved them to the desktop in a new folder. Also, the desktop was not my previous desktop in regards to shortcuts. Which was fine because I added them back.
I then changed the desktop theme to the flower theme. I then went to restart and selected Update and Restart.
When the computer rebooted, my desktop them was gone, and now my old shortcuts from 8.1 were on there. AND the file folder I created with all my files is gone.
I have looked in the windows old folder, the new one, did a file search, what happened? I do not have more than one desktop in the virtual desktops.
Should I recover back to 8.1 to get my files or how do I find them? They can't be deleted but somehow hidden on that other desktop.
HELP!

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade - desktop changed twice/files gone. How can I get the files back?

I get a windows boot error 0xc000000e if I try to boot into safe mode or launch startup repair through through windows boot manager. I tried using a windows 7 recovery usb but startup repair says it cannot repair the problem automatically. Through the command line I ran chkdsk /f and /r multiple times, and now all the files verify and and there are no more bad cluster errors, but I still can't boot. I can get into f8 options but safe mode doesn't work nor does startup repair so I'm not sure what good that does. If I try to boot windows 7 normally, it hangs on the startup screen and the animation doesn't run.

I used partition wizard and it can explore the filesystem fine. It also says that the partition with windows 7 and all my data, is inactive. I tried setting it active using PW but it doesn't do anything. I also tried to fixmbr but it doesn't seem to make a difference either.

I ran an offline sfc scan and it said it found corrupt files but was unable to repair, which I would usually do a inplace upgrade but I can't boot. I'm running chkdsk /r again to see if I can atleast get into safe mode then do a repair install, and finally make a clone when my replacement hdd arrives. I have backups but since they were ran while the partition wasn't bootable I'm not sure if I can get it to boot on a new hdd anyway, which is why I want to make a clone while running windows 7.

I am not sure why I keep getting hdd inaccessible errors or why I'm unable to boot when every tool ... Read more

Answer:Can't delete Windows and all Program-files-files(x86)-data folders why

You need to give yourself a full permission and take ownership of the folders.

1. In Windows 10 type cmd.exe into Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator.

2. Type following commands:

Code:
Takeown /f D:\Windows /r /D Y

Takeown /f "D:\Program Files" /r /D Y

Takeown /f "D:\Program Files(x86)" /r /D Y

Attrib -s -r -h D:\ProgramData

Takeown /f D:\ProgramData /r /D Y

Icacls D:\Windows /grant %Username%:F /t /c

Icacls "D:\Program Files" /grant %Username%:F /t /c

Icacls "D:\Program Files(x86)" /grant %Username%:F /t /c

Icacls D:\ProgramData /grant %Username%:F /t /c

After executing the commands try deleting the folders.

Copies of DVDs I burn do not play in China. I believe DVDs are region specific.

My father-in-law has a PC so I was wondering if there is anyway I could convert a DVD that would run on my player into Windows Media Video format (.wmv)?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. I seem to be missing the Paint program from my Start>All Programs > Accessories.

I tried going to Start>Control panel>Add/remove programs and I attempted to re-add the missing components from Add/Remove components by clicking on the missing file items etc. and running the tool.

For some reason the tool cannot find:

market.mar
msnms.ico
signup.mar
auupdate.exe

These files are needed for the tool to completely run and add all those components. Since it cannot find these files the program stops and these components are not added.

These files should be in C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

I tried searching my system with the "Search results" finder but it could not find the above programs anyplace on my system nor on the Windows XP disk that I have.

I ran the System File Checker sfc /scannow and it did not rectify things.

I did find the mspaint in the C:\Windows\system32 folder so I tried just pasting it into my C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

I do not think that this is the proper way of correcting this and doing it this way I may not be adding all files.

The main issue remains why is Add/remove components not running correctly?

If anyone has any idea what might have happened and how to correct this please let me know.

My girlfriend called and complained to me that all her files are gone on her computer. She explained that the black cmd screen came up saying that files were being deleted. I assumed she had a virus and there wasn't a whole lot that could be done to get the files back. However, when I randomly looked in the Windows folder, I noticed that all the files were missing from there as well. This is strange to me as Windows was in fact running without fine (minus the missing files). All the programs work fine, but all the folders show up as empty. I went into folder options and changed the option to show hidden files and still I got nothing. I also used the xp cd to run chkdsk /r and it came up with a BSOD Stop error after trying to boot into windows. I had to run fixmbr to get Windows up again. Maybe the problems are related. Do you have any ideas on what this might be?

Answer:Files (including windows folder files) not showing up.

Hi.

It appears that Windows 10 may have done away with the ability to add comments to files/folders in File Explorer. There used to be an option in the details tab under properties but I don't seem to be able to find it. The option to checkbox comments as a column to add to file explorer, there seems like there is no way to create a comment.

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks!

I could add a comment to it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 desktop using Office 365. I have had to rely on the Microsoft's free Tech Support a number of times; upgrading to Windows 10, elements of office not working, etc. Several times, rather then fixing the issue at hand the Techs have created new user profiles. This leads to my current problem. Under the "Users" file their are 10 users listed: Bob, bobhu, Default.migrated, Default AppPool, Public, Robert, Temp, Test, Test2, Test Profile with only 2 actual user accounts on the computer. This has led to multiple duplicate files in different locations on the computer. For some reason (it may be related to installation of Windows updates), the computer will ocassionally revert back to a previous user profile. If not caught immediately this can lead to updating of old files rather then the current version of a file. For example: When using Quicken it will revert back to data files that may be a year old. if not paying attention when adding new data this could lead to erroneous data.

Sorry if this is long winded but I wanted to try to fully explain the issue. My basic question is, "What would be the best way to resolve this problem permanently, keeping in mind that I do not want to lose any old data, documents, pictures, etc. I have 3 solutions in mind (listed in no particular order), (1) pay a local computer shop to fix the issue (2) Try to resolve the issue myself [some tech help/knowledge may be required] (3) Use Microsoft Support on-l... Answer:Windows 10-Multiple User files-Duplicate Files

Do it yourself.

Keep the two actual User accounts plus Public and Default.

Then, working on one of the others at a time, copy or move any files desired to Public or one of your actual accounts. Then remove that non-wanted account and its data. (In Windows 8.1 this would be in Control Panel - User Accounts; should be similar in Windows 10.) If the User account does not appear in the list of user accounts then you can just delete the folder from C:\Users.

Hello

Some days ago, i wanted to borrow my laptop to my friend, so for security purpose i right clicked on each drive and on Properties \ Security \ Group or user names \ Edit and i checked "deny" box for all items for the users. it worked fine and ll drives were locked.

Now, i want to regain access to my files and folders but i have some issues.
i went back the above procedure and checked the "allow" box. It gave me access to open drives and folders but i can't open any file!?
It seems like i have restricted myself and i can't get out of it

I also tried below procedure:
right click on drive \ properties \ security \ Advances \ Owner \ Edit \ Administrator (Replace owner on subcontainers and objects)

it didn't help

Note: my user is Administrator
I Use Win 7 Pro 32 bit

i really appreciate any comment

Thanks

Answer:Windows 7 Pro security for files and folders has restricted my files

When changing permissions, only do so for Groups and specially the User's group. Right click on the "Computer" icon and choose "manage". Then go to "Local users and groups", then "users". Look for the default Administrator account, the original and turn it on if it is off. Log in as that account and set permissions again.

Answer:Corrupt files (Windows accessory .lnk files)

Hi, I'd suggest an in-place upgrade repair install. I've done this 3 times, and it's one of the better facilities of Win 10.

Precede it with this in case sthg has happened to your file system:

Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)
chkdsk C: /F
Make sure the result is clear or fixed.

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums

This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
- all/most associations will be unchanged
- all your programs will be left installed
- you will lose any custom fonts
- you will lose any customised system icons
- you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
- Windows.old will be created
- system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
- you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)

This is one of the better features of Win10: as each major build comes out, that's your updated reference build, and as updates are mostly cumulative, there will be few to do.

Recommendation:
Before you perform this major repair procedure, do create a disk image.

Hi, Since you have an un-updated system, no Service Packs for XP installed, the going will be a bit tough for you.

System restore won't work. Everytime I try something it keeps asking "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." The highlighted curser always lands on "Window media Player" which I don't want. In a round about way I can get online, and into Word, after deleting a "machine language" page. I can't get into Excel. I've been through the suggested procedures in this forum, the most promising was Doug Knox's - Windows xp file association fixes, but nothing happened. Would someone please walk me through the procedure. I think I may have missed something, or am doing something wrong. Please explain it to me like I am a fifth grader or younger. Thank you.

Hello,

I am cleaning up after a infection on my computer and I am currently tiring to fix windows picture and fax viewer. I was told to run this "regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll" but I can see that shimgvw.dll is still in the win32 folder. He said that "The following command should force a reinstall of WP&FV"

Was this command going to remove the old shimgvw.dll and install it again?
I would also like to note that windows picture and fax viewer opens up and displays "generating preview..." and then closes after two seconds.

Thanks a bunch!

Is there a way to convert .dmg files to .iso files. Dmg are Mac file extensions, and I want to convert them to iso format for windows. Are there any programs that any one can refer me to in order to do this? I've been searching on google, and all I've been finding is changing the file extension path, for macs only. However, I am running Windows XP Home Edition on my PC, and I wish to use Mac OS X Software on my computer by converting the dmg extensions to .iso. If anyone knows how to do this, please notify me.

Regards,
Alex

Answer:Converting .dmg (Mac) files to .iso (Windows) files.

Even if you were able to conver the files you wouldn't be able to install the Mac software on your PC because the machines are so different. Only way that a program can be installed on both is if it is specifically written for both. If that were the case you usually have two CD's in the box on for Windows one for Mac.

Hey, Everytime I restart my computer now that message pops up. Can anyone here help me out and tell me what this is about?

Answer:Windows cannot find "C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\svchost.exe".

Svchost.exe resides in C:\WINDOWS\system32 not C:\Program Files which is why you are getting this error.

I am concerned you have malware going on so am going to move this thread to the Malware Forum. Work through this link below step-by step and post the requested files as indicated. An Authorized Malware Fighter will respond as soon as possible.

I resolved the problem I had. It appeared to be a memory chip. I do not know whether it is a bad chip or just a compatibility issue.I had 2.5GB of RAM: 1GB 800Mhz and the rest 512MB 688Mhz. I took out the 1GB and the install went through fine. Windows 7 is running just fine with 1.5GB of RAM on a 2.8Ghz Pentium D.

I download zip files from OTRR and Internet Archive for my ipods. I have more than one ipod and use a different computer for each ipod. . My Mac computers have a program that quickly unzips. Windows doesn't. I have tried downloading 7zip and Megazip but can't seem to work those programs properly. They unzip the files but only add one file at a time to my Itunes. I would like to unzip the files to one folder and add that folder to my Itunes library the way I do in the Mac computers. The unzipped files are mp3 files.

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,

I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer.  Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list.  This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files.  Below, I will paste in the file names that appear.  I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop.  They are not it the Recycle Bin either.  I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.

OS: Windows 10 Home
AV: Avast (purchased)
Make: Lenovo

What I have done so far:
1) Scan with Avast.  Nothing
2) Scan with Malware Bytes:  A few PUP that I removed.

Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared.  It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

I was surfing online and randomly this adobe flash installer caused my UAC to pop up asking to allow the install, I know it wasn't flash but it just kept coming up so I shutdown, got into safemode, files looked gone, but I just checked show hidden files. I ran combofix since i've used it numerous times before, but without a script this time. It never showed its logs, but it deleted the infected files. Then I ran hijackthis and found some suspicious stuff running.. RKill shut down some processes for me too, but I don't seem to be able to decipher them well. In conclusion I have hidden files all across my system now, my program shortcuts aren't in the start menu, except remote desktop connection.. I did have to remove the virus causing the popups and all to come. I did not record down the name, didn't even think of it.

In the coming week I will be installing Windows 10 Home on my new computer. I will be using an SSD and an HDD, the SSD for the OS, programs and games and the HDD for photos, music and all the other slow stuff.
So, my question. In case the OS were to ever get corrupted, or I had to reinstall the OS for any other reason, is it possible to have the SSD set up as follows; Partition 1 - OS, Partition 2 - Program Files/Program Files((x86) plus other associated folders/files) and Partition 3 for my games, so that any re-install does not wipe out my already installed programs?

I had no problem doing this in with my XP desktop(OS in C and Progs in D, although not perfect, but was never able to do it with Windows 7.

Can it be done?

Tom.

I am working on someone else's computer and they are having Windows Update problems. Not a single update can install. It downloads, installs, and restarts, but on boot, it undoes all changes. I have tried installing only one (of 100+) but it still fails. I have tried CCleaner for registry/cache issues, sfc /scannow (twice, both the first thing and last thing I tried), and the Windows Update Troubleshooter (it finds lots of issues but can't fix them).
This may or may not be related to the problem recently (when I started working on the computer) that Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 won't open any photos. The program itself opens, but clicking on a photo gives an error message and clicking OK crashes the program. Windows Photo Viewer says "Loading" forever, too. I have tried the Windows Live Essentials troubleshooter, uninstalling (it fails), installing again (it fails), and manually deleting registry entries and folders (was suggested to me), rebooting, and installing again, and it still fails.
Adding to the corruption, there are some document files that won't delete (file doesn't exit error, while still listed). This has been happening for years, and I have yet to find a solution for them.

Sorry I can't provide log files currently, it is installing updates! I can only postpone so many times.

Answer:Windows Updates Fail, Windows Photo Gallery Errors, Ghost Files

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.

If I boot the Windows 7 emergency recovery DVD it no longer finds any Windows image backups on my USB drive. I have tried it on 2 different Windows 7 PC's. I can however see the backups in the \WindowsImageBackup directory while booted from the DVD and going to the DOS prompt. The kicker is that I used these backup images before to replace hard drives on both systems. I do not know what changed. The search on the PC for the images takes only a couple seconds before failing. I have tried changing permissions and ownership on the files without success. Got any ideas?

Hello. I have a Windows XP system that is infected with malware. I ran an AVG scan and it detected 21 threats, and healed them, but my computer is still infected. There are files in C:\windows\temp with random names such as: 0DE41DD0.exe. There were at least 20 of them, and I deleted them all. I also noticed that some could not be deleted because they were in use by critical system processes such as csrss.exe and other Windows processes that are obviously infected. I have no idea what to do. Even after deleting all of the files, after a reboot they come back, and the numbers of them constantly grow. I really have no idea where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I ran Spyware Doctor, CCleaner, AVG, Ad-Aware, but i still get the random.exe's.

I've been having a problem with my Windows 7 machine that began after a windows update the kept having trouble installing by appearing to never fully install the update. It would just show on the screen that it was done installing several but not every update (I don't know if that is related, but I assumed so). Either way for a few weeks now I've had trouble getting pictures or video to open in most any program, and with the Windows viewer and player they don't open media at all. After un/reinstalling Quicktime & VLC those now seem to be back to normal again and will open videos. IrfanView though never did lose the ability to open picture files the entire time.

I was needing some ideas on how to restore Windows Media Player and Windows picture viewer back to full functionality, I looked but did not see how to un/reinstall those programs individually since they seem to be a part of Windows 7. But along the way in an effort to fix these problems I have un/reinstalled my video drivers, changed file associations, run anti-virus/malware software, run SFC and installed all current updates for my system but I have yet to find a reason as to why it is doing this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Without knowing exactly what I'm looking for or how to best describe my tech issues I've included a few screen shots to show my system specs and examples of what would happen when I tried to open up files or even the system information under control panel.

Hi there!
Try with a different source i.e. Instead of DVD try to burn it to a USB Drive and boot from it and see if it works. Also run a diagnostic for your Hard drive let rule out any hardware related issues as well.

The system is a Sony Vaio laptop (about 3 years old) running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Right now I only have access with TeamViewer, but I can get physical access tomorrow if needed.

Are these problems related? Can they be fixed? I've been working... Read more

I am running an HP TouchSmart 600 1050 all-in-one over a Linksys WRTU-54TM wireless router connected to a ComCast modem. When I try to connect to my wife's Toshiba notebook running Windows XP, it will not let me connect saying I am not the administrator. However, I am the administrator on both computers. I can connect from the laptop to my HP and read files. It is only going the other way where I have a problem. Has anyone had the same issue? If so, how did you solve it?

Hi - hope you can help with my pc.

Have been putting up with the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message for a while now.

When Googling the error message I came across your excellent site - hope you can help sort this out.

The error message comes up every now and then when I try and get into windows explorer, either from the desktop shortcut, or from my documents.

The details in the error signature part of the message lists the following:
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512
ModName: explorer.exe
ModVer: 6.0.2900.5512
Offset: 00011900

When I click on the debug option all my icons on the desktop disappear momentarily, then re-appear.

I'm not sure if this could be down to Malware of some sort or perhaps a corrupt windows file somewhere.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Suite 2009 (ver 8.0.0.506) and Ashampoo Antispyware 2 Guard (ver 2.05) - both of which are updated regularly. Neither have shown anything untoward.

I am currently trying to make a copy of the files on my laptop to an external drive but after 1 Gb of data is transferred the status box when copying stops and doesn't seem to be copying over any further files. When I try to cancel the process it does not register that I have pressed cancel and I have to shut off my laptop manually, waiting a few seconds before turning it back on.

I have uninstalled avast believing that it might be causing an issue with the transfer but the result is still the same.

Recently after a failed attempt it has rendered my hard drive back to an ntfs unreadable state due to error code 0x80070570 .

Any help to resolve either issue would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Answer:Windows 7: Windows 7 stalling during copying of large files to externa

What is the external HD? How old is it? When was it formatted etc..

In any case I would run a diagnostic on the external drive.
Also try a copying utility such as TeraCopy free version and see if it has similar problems(once the external drive is returned to a normal state or using another drive.)

Hello,

I have an old sata internal hard drive with Windows XP installed and various files I'd like to recover. I hooked it up to my Windows 10 desktop and can view it in "This PC" but when I attempt to access it it suggests I reformat the drive. I don't actually need the drive itself, I am only interested in recovering the files on it.

Is there any way to access the files on the old hard drive without having access to Windows XP or Windows 7 machine?

Would it be possible to access the hard drive on a Windows 7 laptop with some sort of Sata to USB adapter?

I found this topic where one user said it should be as simple as just plugging it in.

Thank you!

Hi Technohero and welcome to Tenforums.

Yes, you should be able to hook that drive up to any system, using a SATA to USB adapter of some sort, or even plugging it inside your rig, and you should be able to do this in Windows 10. However, if the drive has some sort of damage, Windows will tell you to format it first before using it. So, is it a pretty old disk? Has it been dropped/damaged in some way?

Am trying to do an In-place repair to my Surface Pro 3 already running windows 10 (Build 10586.29) because of bugs causing the Start menu and search to be unusable, as well as some metro apps. Have already tried re registering apps using powershell but no luck.
The steps i have followed to attempt this In-place repair are here,
and am using the USB installation media method.
The problem I'm experiencing and enquiring about is when I get up to choosing what to keep, it tells me this. Down the bottom it explains why those two options are greyed out but that shouldn't be correct because my install is just the standard install on my built in hard drive.
I have done a bit of research and found some people have fixed this by undoing past registry edits, but this is a very new computer and have never done any registry edits and started with a clean install. Windows and all my system files and programs are in there reglar spot and I run nothing off of other hard drives. Also I have tried booting from the USB media and get the same thing. So how could this be solved? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows 10 In-place repair - Cant keep files and apps, windows install

Why don't you just select Keep personal files and apps? You can choose one of the two other options, too, as is clearly told in the tutorial you mentioned.

EDIT:

Forget the above, I've just noticed my reply is wrong; when checking your screenshot again I can see that those two other options are greyed out.

I have no idea why. One possible reason is that the install media used is older than current installed Windows. The in-place upgrade and repair install needs to be done using the same Windows version, build and edition than the installed Windows, or later.

I ran Combofix to repair some of the errors and followed it with SFC /Scannow, but I have some corrupted files in the driver store that can not be repaired.

I have an HP Pavilion dm4t-2100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, the OS with which it was installed. I am connected to a Homegroup which also contains a laptop and two desktops. I am able to connect through the network to the other laptop and remotely view files and devices on that laptop. However, I cannot see past the names of the two desktops. This means I cannot read or write files on or install devices connected to either desktop computer. Essentially, here's what's happening:

The desktops can see each other and both laptops (R/W). The laptops can see each other (R/W), but neither one can see either desktop ("Cannot find the network path"; ping command fails).

Is there a setting I can change either on the laptops or on the desktops to enable connectivity? All computers on the network are running genuine copies of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit as their original OS.

I recently purchased a DELL Inspiron 15 7000 series laptop computer.
Windows Media Player for Windows 10 will only play the audio portion of .MPG files. The video portion of the .MPG file will not play. (.MP4 files are working fine)
If I transfer the .MPG file to my (now) old DELL laptop which is running Windows 7, the .MPG files plays both audio and video...as one would expect.
This suggests to me the issue has something to do with the video card in my new DELL Inspiron 15 7000 laptop computer.
How can/do I go about resolving this issue so that I can play .MPG videos on my new DELL laptop?

Hi, I was asked to downgrade a Vista machine to Windows XP. I also was asked to backup files and folders from Vista and restore it on XP. I am using Backup and Restore Center from Vista to backup the files and folder. Is it going to work when i try to restore to a XP machine?

Thank You

Answer:Backing up Files and folders from Windows Vista and restore it in Windows XP

I don't think so. Most of the earlier versions of MS Backup worked only with the OS it came with.
Before even thinking any more, you need to take a REAL good look at the threads at the top of this list. You might also look at some of the other threads about installing XP on a Vista built machine. It is NOT fun.

Apparently, i want to back up my HDD using the Backup and Restore Center in my version of Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Says i have to format my dad's 1TB external HDD to NTFS to get it to work properly. If i can get that taken care of, good. Now here is what im trying to do, im trying to back up my HDD using this feature, format my HDD, buy Windows Vista Business SP1 64-bit OEM from Newegg because it comes with a coupon to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional for free. Can i restore my entire PC back up onto the 64-bit OS Windows Vista Business no problem even though my Windows Vista Ultimate is 32-bit? If not, let me know now before i make a mistake. I want to go 64-bit!

Answer:Question about backing up my files in Windows Vista and upgrading to Windows 7

I dont think you can do that. I think it can only work for the same version. IE 32 Bit with 32 Bit and 64 Bit with 64 Bit. But i would check with Microsoft. As this is the first time i have had a question like that asked. Most people find a alternative backup method as the Backup and Restore Center stinks.

First, if I'm in the wrong forum, I apologize. Let me know and I'll try to find the right one.

A few days ago, my sister in laws antivirus popped up to tell her the win32 virus was detected on her computer. It wanted to quarantine the file. She clicked "quarantine all" without thinking. Her system rebooted several times with no obvious problem. On the last reboot, as soon as the puter got past the bios screen, the monitor went black. She tried to reboot several times but it wouldn't boot up, not even in safe mode. She brought it to me to look at. I put her HDD into my external case and fired up my machine. My computer showed 2 partitions on her HDD. One was a recovery partition and the other was her C drive. I opened the C drive with windows explorer. I clicked on the windows folder and waited for it to open. I waited for about 10 minutes only to realize that the folder was already open. It was totally empty. I did a search for some of the files that should have been in the windows folder. Nothing. All windows files and sub folders were missing. I went into the quarantine folder and found 1 system file but nothing else. How is this possible

The recovery partition is totally useless to her. It will reinstall Vista but she hates Vista. She had Vista removed and XP installed. I know she has a legitimate copy of XP. I took her to buy it. However, she can't find it now. I knew it wouldn't work but still I ran a key finder with no results. As fa... Read more

Answer:Solved: All Windows Files Missing Except Mail Windows Folder

You need to do a repair install with your copy of xp heres how:

One of the best kept secrets of Windows XP is it's built in repair feature!

In previous versions of Windows, correcting an operating system error, or installing a new motherboard, usually meant formating and reinstalling, resulting in loss of all data. Don't worry; Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system!

Note: The system repair function will remove any updates you have previously installed that are not included on the CD. Drivers will also be reverted to their original XP versions, as well as some settings (network & performance settings may sometimes be reset to their defaults). It may be necessary to reactivate your Windows XP as well. When finished, you will have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update, because they are all replaced during repair.

Why would I want to reinstall Windows XP?
1) Can't start Windows XP in safe mode.
2) You have problems caused by a recently installed system update (Windows Update, hotfix, Windows XP service pack, or Microsoft Internet Explorer update).
3) Your problems can't be solved with system restore, or you can't access system restore.
4) You've installed a new motherboard, or made other major [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]hardware[/COLOR][/COLOR] changes and need to reinstall Windows.

Hey there,

I (my wife) is running Windows 7 Home Premium (64). Windows explorer crashes when:

-Searching with more than 4 characters in the start menu
-Opening the Network and Sharing Center
-Various other times that seem unrelated

I have attempted:

-Startup repair X3 : it catches problems but doesn't repair them
-sfc /scannow command : also catches problems, and the CDA log shows all of the corrupted files.
-Copying the system32 files from a fresh windows install to fix the broken dll files while in another os : this didn't seem to have any affect
-System Restore doesn't have any images before the issue began
-Full system antivirus and malware scan and rootkit detection with no results showing (doesn't rule it out, but I used Norton commercial, Mbits, Lavasoft, and Kapersky online all in safemode, and some rootkit detectors)
-Repair Install : hangs when initiated
-Updating windows to SP1 : it seems the system attempted to update some time ago and failed or was interrupted. Now SP1 won't install, the updater hangs
-in an attempt to fix the windows update hanging issue, I tried:
-Installing the system update readiness tool (Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [September 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center) : the update hangs too
-Installing the fix it program here (Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working) : didn't make a difference

Yesterday evening I did the Windows 10 upgrade and was initially shocked when my files were missing. However, I looked online and found out that they were in fact hiding out in the Windows.old. So I pulled those files from there and placed them on my desktop, which is where I have them normally.
When I went to sleep Windows did an auto update and now those files are missing. However, all the files I left in the Windows.old are still there and I have access to them and my home screen looks how I had it when I had Windows 7. BUT! All the files I pulled out of Windows.old are now missing.
The weird thing is that I haven't received anymore HDD space, so I believe the files are still there. Searching for them however doesn't reveal anything. If I open Word, I can see my last access to them, but clicking on the file results in an "Unable to Open due to file path" prompt.
Anyone experience this? Anyone know where I can look or do and why were those files deleted again after I moved them from Windows.old to my desktop?????

Hi,

I am running IE8 on Windows 7 (Home Premium 64bit). My Temporary Internet Files folder is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5. I have enabled Show Hidden Files and Folders and removed the tick for Hide Protected Operating System files.

I've noticed that streamed .wma file appeared as .dat file in the temporary internet folder. I've tried copying it to the desktop and changed the extension to .wma but it will not play at all. I have the same problem in another laptop running Windows Vista. In Windows XP platform, I have no problem retrieving the streamed files as they are saved in the original file format (i.e. .mp3 or .wma) in the Temporary Internet Files folder.

Please advise.

All of sudden, now I can?t open to edit any pic files in My Pictures. When I try, I get: ?This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel.? I?ve never had a problem before now, nor made any changes to anything I?m aware of. No problems with any other files. I've gone to Folder Options, chosen JPG as default change (it was already chosen), and checked Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as default. Nothing changed... Bleeping computer!
My Errors files has a repeated "Application Error" last dated 6/11/11: Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, fault address 0x000094a6. That's all that's there; if it helps.

Answer:Windows XP, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, JPG files: Association

I would try a repair install of XP, using a disk that reflects the current SP which is installed...or run the sfc /scannow command, again with a disk reflecting same SP as the O/S installed.

I would suspect file damage.

Alternately...I would try running the chkdsk /r command.

Did you change the settings for both the .jpg and .jpeg extensions?

As a test/workaround...you could download/install Irfanview and change the program affiliated for all graphic files.

Keep getting error message after just a few minutes of reboot that Windows has ceased functioning.  Ran Hijack This log and there are many missing Windows files.  Tried to restore to earlier point and it took me back to very beginning...lost all my anti-virus/anti-malware programs (among other programs as well).  It restored an expired and uninstalled Norton Internet Security.  I uninstalled that again because it made things even worse.

Computer still won't stay on longer than a few minutes.  Trying to copy my important files and computer keeps freezing during that as well.  Can't update to Windows 8.1  Purchased an upgrade Key but can't figure out how to perform that function.

Please help.  Many important files at risk.  Before this, I ran scans daily...Webroot Internet Security, SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes...all came back clean.   I did download PC Matic and it did remove some files...but computer was freezing before I did that.

Reinstalled Webroot Internet Security Complete and no virus found.  Am using a different computer to post this.

Thanks so much!

I am trying to put Windows 7 on my old MPC Client Pro 365. 2GB ram. I am following the Microsoft instructions for upgrading from XP to 7. It stops at expanding windows files at 27%.
Searching the forum, there seems to be more than 1 answer. Please let me know if you can help me. I really don't know why this change needs to be this problematic.

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 7 Expanding windows files stops at 27%

What version of Windows 7 are you trying to install? Windows 7 32Bit (X86) or 64 Bit? The bare minimum of RAM on a 64 Bit OS is 2GB, we strongly suggest 4GB. This is a 10 year old computer. The hardware is too old to run Windows 7. This computer does not support or have drivers for Windows 7: ClientPro 365 System Drivers and Documentation

I'm curious to know is it safe to delete the $Windows BT files and folder on the C: drive of
my 32bit windows 7 platform..

I don't wish to have windows 10 and I certainly don't agree of Microsoft forcing people to use it, I
believe windows 7 is more stable then Windows 10, 8.1 and any other.. that's my opinion.

Answer:Windows BT files and folder in windows 7 safe to remove?

Sure it is safe to remove that folder.

The Disk Cleanup app that is native to Windows offers to remove it...
...if you run that clean up tool as admin.

I had Windows Vista Ultimate installed on my PC. I got Windows 7 Ultimate and decided I needed an upgrade. I formatted my primary partition and got rid of Vista completely. I then installed Windows 7. It is beautiful.

My problem is simple: I had a partition with files on it that were encrypted using the EFS on Vista. How do I now decrypt and access them?

HELP ! ! !

Answer:Windows 7 access to Windows Vista Encrypted Files - How

Hello ozofmanson, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Vista and Win 7 use the same EFS system, so it should work when you right click the encrypted file or folder, click General > Advanced and clear the checkbox in Encrypt contents to secure data.

I have a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
My desktop has Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

I have been trying to allow folder sharing between the two, but it won't work.

On my desktop, I can access all my files from my laptop. However, when I try to access the shared files from Vista on my laptop, it takes forever and then I get a message that says "Windows cannot access \\BILL-PC." But I can access all of the media files.

They are both on the same network entitled WORKGROUP.

So far, I have done the following on both PCS
- Enabled sharing of the printer itself.
- Gave permissions to 'everyone' and full access under c:\windows\system32\spool\printers.
- Added guest users that share all files and folders.

They are obviously on the same network since I can see them both listed. However, I have no idea why it keeps telling me it cannot access my desktop.

Answer:Windows Vista Shared Files and Printers Won't Appear on Windows 7

Welcome to SF,

Create Identical UserNames and Passwords on both computers.

Disable your Security Software for now if you have one installed on both computers.
If you're using the Windows built-in Firewall, make sure that Files and Printer sharing is Excluded.

Disable Password Protected Sharing.
Disable Password Protected Sharing — MAXIMUMpcguides – Windows 7 tips, tricks, help, and how-to guides

Verify that you are sharing the folder to Everyone, give full access for now. Were you trying to share the entire C Drive or subfolders in the C Drive? Please share the entire C drive for now, call it C.
Click on Start, type the \\ComputerName\C or \\IPAddress\C - The Computer Name or IP Address of the computer that you're trying to access in your home network.

Please post an update.

So I was trying to get the latest update on my Win 7 PC. My PC never would let me do a auto update or update with in the OS so I downloaded a copy of win 7 from Microsoft and burnt it onto a disk. Now I went to do that update an everything went well until after it did its first reboot. Once it started back up it has been sitting at 18% and says "Please Wait" and "Gathering additional information before exporting files" This had been going on for about an hour. Any help would be great.

A few hours ago while I was playing an online game and watching Netflix, Microsoft Security Essentials popped up saying that it was taking care of detected threats and that no further action was necessary. Twenty minutes after that, I got a cascade of windows across my screen (12-15, at least) saying the same message: 'System Error. Hard disk failure detected'. Then my desktop background disappeared. Then my desktop icons. Then my start menu items systematically vanished. I ran a full scan with an updated Microsoft Security Essentials, it picked up nothing. I immediately rebooted into Safe mode with Networking and repeated the scan. Still nothing. I downloaded Malwarebytes and TDSSKiller after Googling the error message and getting an idea of what it was, except TDSSKiller came up clean, as did Malwarebytes. I rebooted into normal mode again and again got the cascade of fake error messages. Went back into Safe Mode, ran all three scans again. Still nothing. I was thoroughly confused at this point and figured I would just do a system restore. I realized that every link in my start menu had been moved elsewhere. I located the temp folder they were in, accessed system restore through that, and.. nothing. I choose a date, click the Next button, and nothing happens. I have adminstrator access. Argh. Help, please, before I tear my hair out. Thank you.

Recently my HP Pavilion dv7 laptop crashed and would not boot.

This system is the Core i5 with 6gb of Ram.

The laptop was upgraded to Windows 10 previously from the original Windows 7.   Unable to get the laptop to boot, I managed to get into the HP recovery manager and back up all pictures, documents, videos, music files, etc. to an external USB drive.   I have a feeling the HP recovery manager was still on the laptop from the original OS - Windows 7.

I had to put a brand new hard drive in the lap top and remove the old hard drive.   I did a clean install of Windows 10 on the new drive.

Now I want to put the recovered files onto the new hard drive running Windows 10.  When running the system restore application off the USB backup, it attempts to put the files back but errors instead.

Since I am not restoring to the hard drive that I backed up from, is that the reason for the error?  How can I get the backed up files (in their current restore format) off the USB and to this new drive?

Please advise.

For the last two hours the update has been hanging at expanding files (18%)

It says windows needs to update the computer

Answer:Windows 7 update expanding windows files hangs at 18%

Hello dylan151 to TSF,

Looking at those two screenshots, you are doing a new installation of the Windows? 7 Operating System, correct?

If so, and after the length of time you have waited, it looks as though the installation is corrupt.
With a new installation, you must format thew Hard Drive Partition before you start the installation.
I would recommend that you abort this current installation, and start again, after you format the drive.
Having said that, if you are Upgrading to Windows? 7, what Operating System is already installed on the computer?
Please answer these queries.

Kind Regards,

Hi All,

I am trying to setup a shared network on our office computers.

I have turned off password protection on both computers (one is on win 7 and other on Vista)

On my windows 7 PC I can see the shared folders and printers connected to the Vista PC

However, when i try to open a file or even set up the vista printer on my win 7 PC it says 'Cant Access'

I know the network is working properly because i can access my win 7 files using my Macbook pro.

So the problem must be with the Vista PC right?

Kind Regards

chicouk

So this is a bit of a weird one and I wracked my brain to think of the right place to put it.

I'm going to try and make it as simple as possible, but I really don't understand how it turned out in the first place so it might be tough.

I was trying to back up my windows drive, i've been intending to upgrade from windows 7 Premium to Pro (or ultimate) so i can use more RAM, but i wanted to make sure i had a backup first, just in case.

Well, any time i try to make a disk image with windows, it INSIST on also using drive E (I have drives C, D and E as well as externals). I don't want this at all, because it makes the image huge. On a little inspection (showing protected operating system files) i've found that E is littered with things like boot directoriesm autoexec, boot, bootmgr, bootsect, and so on.

They are all OLD (last modified 2009) but i don't think i can deleted them, and it won't let me reformat the drive either.

I worry, that aside, that windows NEEDs these files even though Windows is installed on C. Is there any way to find out if they are actually needed, and being used, and/or move them if they are being used, so i can delete them (also.. how do i delete them?) so i can do the backup without taking that entire drive as well.

Also.. if they are being used on that drive as opposed to C.. it can't be good for it either and fixing that is probably good.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Answer:Windows boot files NOT on the drive with Windows. Moveable?

Ultimate and Pro are the same exact OS with a few extra expensive features unlocked that most consumers don't need. Only if you're running 32 bit is your RAM restricted to around 4 gb if it isn't also reserved by Hardware. So you can change to 64 bit to use the extra RAM, using the same Product Key to Clean Install Windows 7 .

Please post back a screenshot of your Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image - Windows 7 Forums telling us what is on each partition so we can help you move your System Active boot files to C if you decide not to change to 64 bit.

This is another reason why all other HD's should be unplugged during install, and why you should delete all partitions during booted install to create new as desired - shown in Steps 6-7 in first tutorial.

Hi, each of our 2000+ laptop users use a 110MB of our DFSr for redirected folders (Document, Desktop & Favorites). This was working fine until we discovered their Offline Files cache was not restricted to 110MB so many are now over the 110MB limit
for Offline Files and this is causing various issues, e.g. deleted files are reappearing. So we need to set both group policy settings "Size of auto-cached files" and "Total size of offline files" in "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Network\Offline Files" to 110MB and then reduce each user's Offline Files to under 110MB. The latter is the tricky bit. We could deploy an SCCM package to re-initialize the offline files cache and database (Offline-Folders) using "REG ADD
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f" but any files in a user's Offline Files that hasn't yet been synch'd will be lost and this approach will be unacceptable to the business.

How can we overcome this? Could we somehow backup the Offline Files folder (C:\Windows\CSC) using a script/USMT, without requiring user intervention, before deploying the FormatDatabase reg key update? If so, how please?

Thanks
Scott
