I want all video file types to display thumbnails

Question: I want all video file types to display thumbnails

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Preferred Solution: I want all video file types to display thumbnails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. I'm currently using Windows 7 and system details are in the sig...

Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

Question: Video File Types

This is so basic, I'm almost embarrassed. I'm new to the world of multi-media and need information about video file formats.

The only burner I have on my computer is Microsoft Media Player, and I've burned exactly one DVD which is three short video clips from television programs. While it looks okay on my computer, when I put the disk in my DVD player, the player doesn't even see it there. Media Player doesn't give any options that I've found and the one DVD I've burned was selected automatically as a "data file."

I'm willing to get another burner (if I can find one...I'm using Vista), but need to know if there is sort of a universal video file type that will display on either computers or DVD players.

Thank you.

Basically, what I want to do is take video files off my computer and be able to watch them on my digital camera. When I transfer a video file onto my camera, however, I get "file error". I figured the videos needed to be in the format that my camera recorded in (.AVI) and I can convert the files but it still will not work. My guess is that the codec needs to be the same as well but I am having trouble getting the videos into the same codec that my camera records in. I have a Samsung Digimax 430 and the video codec is included on the software cd that came with it. I am just wondering if someone can point me toward a good program (this is important enough that I am willing to buy one) or tell me how to go about doing this.

Addendum: I've tried to solve this problem by downloading the K-Lite Codec for x32 and x64 (as suggested to a user in a different thread), but as seen below, this solution only worked for the .mkv and .wmv files.

Hi folks,
I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. I recently downloaded Total Converter, but unbeknownst to me it also downloaded Total Player - which I didn't want or need - but when I realized it was there I decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it screwed up my audio/video file types. Apparently, because its in all-in-one player, after I uninstalled it - because frankly it sucked as a player - it retained the all-in-one component in my file types under Folder Options. Whenever I change a file tape to play on a different player, it changes all the other audio/video file types with it, forcing me to use just one player - which, for certain reasons, I don't want to do. When I try to change an individual file type under Folder Options itself, as soon as I click "Edit" after inputting the file type, I get a message that says the file type in question is assigned to "totalplayer.file." I've looked everywhere on my computer for a file associated with totalplayer, but I can't find one - as far as I can tell, everything was fully uninstalled when I got rid of it. Can someone tell me what's going on and how I can fix this? Thanks. -Steve

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Something that I'm simply stumped on...

Disk types (CD+RW, CD+R, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW), drive types, and format types(different versions of UDF, mastered, etc).

I thought I had the basic gist of it, until I was trying to get a driver onto a disk to use in an old 98 machine. I simply could not understand it.

All of the different disk types, format types, what's compatable with what... Even when I see charts like the one in Windows Vista's Help and Support page, I'm still confused.

Is there any website or someone here that can spell everything out? All the differences between format types, all of this write once business, or write to more than once but can't erase, or only format once, all that stuff that doesn't ever seem to be the case when you actually go to burning files and formatting?

Answer:disk types, format types and drive types

The HowStuffWorks website is fairly good for this, example on CDs

Main Computers page

But quickly and as simple as possible off top of head.

CDR or DVDR disks allow you to write once on these with no erase, however if you format one of these disks to UDF ( drag and drop ) by formatting them as such, you can write data to them, then at later date add more data, and add more data, until the disk is full, if you finalise any CDR/DVDR you cannot add more data to them as they are locked.

CDRW or DVDRW disks allow you to write and erase data many times.

A guy said his problem began after installing the software (which he has now uninstalled) that came with his new Canon camera. When he opens a folder of pictures (all jpgs) and his display default is set to "Thumbnails", he gets SMALL images (but not quite as small as "icons.") It also is VERY slow to display the images. If he changes the display to anything except thumbnail and then back to thumbnail, he gets the proper thumbnail size on all pics. If he just double clicks on the small image to open it and then closes it, all the images in the folder change to the correct thumbnail size. He has thousands of pictures to sort through and the extra steps are driving him crazy. Suggestions?

I am using the same LCD monitor I was before when I was using Vista x64, but with that setup, I ran my screen resolution at 1024 x768.

But I've noticed that W7 does things different. It has locked in a resolution that my video card is recommended to run at, 1280 x1024 and when I go to display settings and move the slider up and down, if I wanted, say, to use 1024 x768, it actually chops off some of the viewing screen, making it look like a Letterbox, which of course, looks ugly.

So I did the next best thing which is go that, three-option setting that says "Make text and other items larger or smaller" and cranked it to150. 125 just made some things seem too small. But even at 150, though some things look fine, other things, like the icons, are huge, even after I have adjusted the setting in Advanced Display Properties.

It would nice if they had it set up where you could customize it even more with settings in between 125 and 150. Also it would be nice if it were still like Vista where I could run a lower display setting and everything would just be stretched, not chopped off. I'm going to look into seeing if I can do anything through the NVidia options.

Answer:Windows 7 display types seem different

I don't know why the difference between Vista and 7, but since 7 wants to use a 5:4 ratio (1280:1024), are there any resolutions close to that ratio--say, 1200:960 or 1000:800? If there are, they may look better than the 4:3 ratio of 1024:768, but still be near the size you are used to.

When ever I open a folder with many files it takes a while to open or the icons/thumbnails take a long time to generate and in task manager it can be seen that msmpeng.exe is using a core of my cpu @ 100% level. disabling MSE fixes the problem. i've no other anti malware/security application. just MSE and windows firewall. i installed malware bytes now to verify that my system has no spyware though (came clean). windows defender is disabled.

this problem is easily replicated with my downloads from firefox folder (problem is most obvious with this folder) and for a strange reason the stalker call of pripyat benchmark application installer. i'm facing this issue regardless of version - 1611, 1959 & 1961.

I am a photographer and I want to display my pictures in a gallery on my website, doing something similar to the gallery section of this website:

I have no idea how she does this. It's set up so when you click on the thumbnail you will see a larger version of the image.

I plan on getting my site through homestead again. The starter package offers only 10 webpages. Is doing something like described above going to take more webpages than that? It doesn't look like the enlarged versions of the pictures open up on a separate page, but then again, I'm not sure, because I don't no what it entails to do something like that.

Is it possible to have Windows Explorer sort your files by the literal file extension, rather than by the designated file type? For instance, instead of having all of my WAV, MP3, MID, AIFF, OGG, etc files being listed as "Winamp Media File" I'd prefer that they are seperated by thier individual extensions like "WAV File" or "MP3 File" which makes it easier to identify file types within the explorer. I guess the same thing applies for images and video files, which can be grouped together under a common application.

Answer:File Extensions vs File Types in Windows Explorer

Well you can always use the "arrange icons by type" method. You can also assign certain icons to certain file types through folder options. That way all your wave files may have one icon while your MP3s have another, etc.

However, as you can see from the attached, I don't have a VIEW menu on my Folder.

I would like to sort these by file type so that I can save them to a CD.

What am I doing wrong here?

Answer:I can't sort by File Types. What happened to File Details?

I attached a word doc with two pics in it. I have no idea wht these [IMG] links are.
I hit the paperclip, added my file from my C: drive, hit Upload, and got this.

Essentially, I created a new folder, put in some music files, and wanted to sort them by file type, but I have no option for that. I can only sort by List, Details, Tiles and Content.

Under Windows XP, I COULD sort using View/Details.

I am using windows XP as my OS.

Recently my thumbnails have been displaying the wrong images. This seems to be across the board and affects all folders in each of my hard-drives. It first started out that when I opened a folder with blank/manila image and then closed it, it would then display a image of some random thumbnail from some other folder and then adopt that image as it's default thumbnail image. Now the folders just display wrong thumbnails regardless if they have been opened or not. I have tried thumbnails refresh, didn't work. I tried deleting the thumbnail.db for a folder, that didn't work either.

What solution is there to correct this? I have probably thousands of folders that display the wrong images in thumbnail view.

Let me correct that subject line a bit. It happens in almost all Sub Folders. For example, This PC is an odd one. Sometimes it's in thumbnail view, other times it's in detail view. I suppose that depends on how you start This PC.
This started about 3 weeks ago. I've been so busy with tech problems, at the time I never thought about it being a long term issue. Had I known, I could have looked at my windows updates to see if there was an update around that time. But if it was a Windows update, I think lots of users would be throwing fits, so it must be something that was caused by a setting in another program.
I use the detail view on ALL of my folders. Even pictures and music, if I'm looking at those in Explorer, I want the detail view. I have programs for my audio files and my image files - then I will use a different view.
Well, I remember in the good old days, at least in XP, you could go into Folder Options and make changes and there was a bo you could check to Apply these changes to ALL folders? It was wonderful. Windows 10 doesn't have that option. But I figure one of you has had a similar issue, and I also figure one of you has found a solution.
I change the settings in every folder that I open, but it doesn't stay, and I've looked at all the options in the toolbar - There doesn't seem to be any option to save that view, let alone apply to ALL folders. This is driving me mad.
So, have any of you had this problem? Have any of you found a way to change settings for fol... Read more

Hey Guys, this is an odd one.

I have a new Win10 machine which completely refuses to display thumbnails for PDF file types.

I have checked the view settings in explorer, and also the visual effects settings and it looks correct.

I have tried using Adobe Reader DC (which required a preferences setting to be changed to generate thumbnails) and also Foxit Reader (which doesn't) with no luck. Currently I have Foxit Reader installed.

PDF`s are currently visible in a preview pane, but PDF thumbnails simply wont show up! JPG thumbnails, however, generate just fine.

I did have this issue a while ago on an old machine, but the issue "went away" - I didn't take any deliberate actions to fix, so I`m at a loss to know whats going on here.

Any replies greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

This is my first post on here and I hope you guys can help me. I have tried to be as detailed as possibly but please let me know if you require any more information.

I was recently struck with a Trojan that disabled my Anti-Virus software and Windows Defender. (wintems.exe/hdlrr.exe) I took care of that with GMER and some other assorted programs. I installed AVG Free and ran a full system scan to clear out anything I missed (it picked up one or two files) so I should now be clean.

EDIT: I forgot to mention this but I have also scanned my computer with the most current versions of Spybot S&D and AdAware 2007 and removed anything they picked up.

Ever since I removed the trojan/viruses though I have been having a very strange problem with Vista Home Premium (SP1) and I'm not sure what is happening. I have searched extensively and have found others with similar issues but nothing has worked for me yet. I thought I found a link to a Microsoft Hotfix that sounded late last night but I figured the issue would be resolved with the SP1 update and now I can't find the link again.

Anyways, recently Vista decided to stop showing my background wallpaper. If I right click on the desktop and go to personalize, I can click desktop background, but non of my pictures show previews. I can click on them and mouse over the details but if I try to set a picture it won't do anything.

This has been bugging me for a while!

Very often when I open a folder to view its contents and choose a thumbnail display ( as opposed to list, details or tiles ) then the folder icons are emblazoned with .jpg images seemingly chosen at random from the images on my hard drive. ( Actually it might not be entirely random, the images displayed are often those I've viewed or edited recently )

It's a pain in the pudenda because after I have chosen an appropriate image to identify the contents of a folder ( say a picture of the Eiffel Tower to denote that the folder is full of pictures of Paris ) the next time I open My Pictures ( or wherever the folder is stored ) I get a random image ( say, a Peruvian llama )

Doesn't only affect picture folders and it even affects the folders that don't allow customisation ( ie those that have no 'Customise' tab in 'Properties' )

I have tried deleting one image that was appearing frequently from My Pictures but it still appears on the folder.

Am I missing a trick with the "Remember each folder's Settings.." stuff? should I be messing with "thumbs.db" ?

I really don't want to lose the work I've put in choosing pictures for the folders that are correctly adorned so a "Global/Nuclear" option would be a real last resort!

I'm using a hp desktop computer running Windows XP SP2

Answer:Folder thumbnails display random images

sadly XP will only remember a set number of folder customisations by default, this causes the exact issue your seeing now with random changes to certain folders images, you can however get around this by increasing the amount of folders that XP remembers, Download Powertoys for XP and install the TweakUI component.

Once installed and run click, Explorer then Customizations and change the default value to something like 5000 ( more if you have alot of folders ) > Apply

Hello everyone,

I love the way that Internet Explorer 8 displays all of its open tabs/windows in a list view when you hover over the IE8 Taskbar Icon, and there are too many tabs/windows open to display them as thumbnails. I would like it to always display the open tabs/windows in a list view. Furthermore, I want my other programs, such as Outlook, where I have multiple items open, to display them in a list, rather than thumbnails, when I hover over the Outlook icon in the taskbar.

Is there any way to get this to happen, even if I have to use a software add-on?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Best regards,

Juan Antonio

Question: Video Thumbnails

I'm running Win 7 x64 Home Premium. For some reason, I've lost my video thumbnails. I've tried numerous fixes including checking and unchecking show thumbnails (instead of icons), refresh, deleting the thumbnail files stored in AppData, etc. I can't seem to get them back! .jpg thumbnails appear to be unaffected. Any idea what I can do to fix this (short of a complete reinstall!)?

Thanks so much in advance!

All the best,

Answer:Video Thumbnails

What icons show with the video files?

One person reported this problem, solution was they did not have enough free space on the hard drive, they deleted some large files to free up some space and thumbnailing started to work again.

I'm sure there's a way to do this, but it's out of my realm of digging in windows.

What I need essentially is a Symbolic Folder that will scan a set directory and only return specific file types.

For example, I have five folders with .jpgs, .psds, and .txt.

What I would like is to create a folder that when opened will only show me .txt files from those directories.

Is there a program, or service that will allow me to do this?

Answer:Symbolic File Folder with Specified File Types?

This is quite easy to do with Windows Search.

This example is how to create a shortcut to all images on chosen folder (location), inclusive all its subfolders:Open the location you want to use as root. In this example I'll use Libraries
Type to search field kind:image, click Save Search:

Name the search as you want to, click Save:

Now when you open the folder %USERPROFILE%\Searches, you'll find shortcuts to all your predefined searches:
Using the same method you can create shortcuts to almost anything. Some search criteria examples:ext:pdf = all PDF-files (extension .pdf)
ext:jpg = all JPG-files (extension .jpg)
datemodified:‎01/‎09/‎2010 .. ‎31/‎10/‎2010 = all files modified between 1st of September 2010 and 31st of October 2010 (notice the date should be in default format used by the current Windows user account)
kind:music = all music files

When I tried changing the icon of 'File Folder' in 'Folder Options' --> 'File
Types' , by mistake I made 'find' in 'Action' list ('Advanced' button) the
default. Now I am unable to remove it. So whenever I try double clicking a
folder, a search window appears.

Now I don't want anything in the list to be made default. System does not
allow me to do so.

What I tried to do and how it failed?
1. I tried adding a new action item with the application as 'explorer.exe'
and made it the default. After this whenever I double click a folder it opens
in a new window. Note that the Browse folder settings in General tab of
'Folder Options' is still 'Open folders in the same window'

2. There is a checkbox in 'Advanced' settings for 'File Folder' with label
'Browse in same window'. This option is unchecked and the best part is, this
is disabled.

3. Even file folder is not present in file types..
How do I go back to my old settings where in no item in Action list is set
as default?

Answer:file folder disappeared from file types

don111, Click Start>Run then copy & paste or type in:
regsvr32 /i shell32
Click OK

Restart your computer.

If that doesn't correct the problem try the "Folder Association Fix" at the link below. Instructions are on the page.

EDIT : Added file extension to download.

So after 1 and a half years I've had like 7 BSOD's, and most of them were ntoskrnl.exe which I would like to know how to solve, now I get nvidia display driver kernel stopped working and has recovered, followed by a black screen then recovering.

So what I would like to know is, how do I fix it? I have the latest nvidia drivers, tried reinstalling them, this only happened recently, and I ran memtest and my ram is fine apparently, aswell as valleybenchmark, so the BSOD's seem random.

I've tried going into folder options and unticking and ticking.
I've ran disk clean up
I've ran sfc /scannow
I've installed some codecs

I did find something about editing the registry but when I was following the instructions I couldn't find the specified area mentioned in the article. So I haven't actually change anything in my registry yet.

Yes, I told a friend my dilemma and he found a fix just after I posted this! Here's what you do, go to run and input this command:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

It will re-enable thumbnail loading. I hope the myriad of other people who have had this exact same problem and received no help find this and read it.

Windows xp SP3. I have a bunch of short video clips in various formats such as avi, wmv, and mpeg. Now before I installed and uninstalled this video converting software, I could see the thumbnail for the files in thumbnail view. After I uninstalled it, it reset all the file associations for video files. I reapplied them to media player, but now no matter what I do thumbnails will not load for any of them. I defragged, restarted, did system restore, nothing. Please help me before I go insane.

Oh yea I've already tried deleting the thumbnail file that's hidden. Instead, no new thumbnail file is ever generated.

Hello there,

I'm using Windows 7 just like you all. Ultimate edition, 64-bit. The system is running perfectly without any problems, but I got one issue after two weeks of using Win7.

The problem is that video preview thumbnails are not showing up. "Show thumbnails instead of icons" in view options is checked.

Take a look. On the left side is my HDV camcoder captured files, .mt2 format. But on the right side is my video folder, contains .mp4 and .wmv formats. As you can see .mp4 .wmv thumbnails are missing.

Maybe this is the place where I finally will got the solution.

Sorry but as I am not able to read the file extensions on the right hand image, they are too fuzzy, I am not in a position to help.
Perhaps if you produce a straightforward screenshot it might help. Also where did the files come from? Are they downloaded or from a camcorder or where?

Attached is a screen shot of a folder that has 3 AVI files in it. It's really not a bog deal, but why are 2 of 'em shown as thumbnails, and one is shown with the VLC Media Player icon. They all have the same extension (.avi) and when I pause the mouse pointer on 'em, they all say "VLC Media File (.avi)". The 'View' setting is set to 'Thumbnails'. So why are they displayed differently when I open a folder? Like I said, it's not really important, and I'm just curious more than anything else....

Have you tried reassociating the files with the program to handle them such as right-click on a file and then select open with, then choose a program, then check the box for always use the selected program to open this type of file? Sometimes this fixes it by displaying the thumbs. You can also change the view to another view such as detailed view and back to thumbs to reinitialize this feature under VIEWS function of the opened folder containing the files.

I've started playing around with some video editing on Windows 8 and am finding it very difficult to organise my files because I can't get the thumbnails to show up in explorer. I've googled this fairly extensively, and have tried three solutions to address this problem.
Downloading K-Lite codec pack, which I have since read conflicting information about, as to whether this was a good ideas.
Downloaded, installed and run Media Preview by Babelsoft
Followed the advice here about ensuring that the correct options are selected to force Windows to enable thumbnails.

At this stage, and particularly bearing in mind the K-Lite codec pack, I am concerned that I might actually be doing more harm than good. Therefore I'm looking for any advice about how to resolve this issue.

I have just run Media Preview which found around 1000 video files to generate thumbnails for, however there are simply not showing up in explorer. I have a range of video formats, such as .mov .mp4 .avi that have come from a range of sources, and none are showing the thumbnail previews.

Any advice about what I should try next? I can answer any questions about my set-up and post any necessary screenshots.

This is a well known issue. Don't know what the deal is, but it's been a major thorn in my ass since Vista x64, much more so since Windows 7 though. I've made sure the preview was turned on in the folders options, cleared the cache, and even messed with the registry. Nothing worked. Would re-install the operating system (since I usually noticed it immediately from a fresh install) and it would work properly. Weird bug for sure.

I have read similar problems on this forum, but, unfortunately, did not solve mine.

After installing a software (I'm not sure which, it could be VLC or ffdshow codecs or videopad), video thumbnails in Windows Explorer would not show a frame from the video, just the icons. I then downloaded a .reg file which restored the video thumbnails, but now it only shows the first frame of the video, which is usually blank. So now all my videos show a blank black picture, which was not so earlier. Before the problem started, it would pick up a random frame from the video...

My Video Thumbnails in Windows (File) Explorer have gone and been replaced by the generic Icon for the program I select to play the video files (VLC, GOM etc). It's happened to my AVI and MPG files on ALL my Windows 8 PC's.

The Folder Options are set to "Display file icon on thumbnails" and the Performance Options/Visual Effects are set to "Show thumbnails instead of icons".

I tried using the "Media Preview" program but it only works on about one in a hundred icons.

If it's happening on all my PC's it must be happening to others, any clue how to fix this?

Answer:Video Thumbnails are gone and replaced by Icon

Hello Bazzer, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Usually unless you are using either the Windows Photo Viewer or the default Photos app, thumbnail previews of image files may not work with the program you set as the default program even when you have thumbnail previews turned on.

To fix this, you'll need to set either program above as the default program with all of it's associations.

Hey Guys,

First time poster. Here's a bit of a briefing.

Note: using XP!

I've been importing videos from my video camera and the thumbnail has always shown up as first frame from the video. About three months ago i got a new hard drive, so i transferred all the clips...They all still showed the first frame as the thumbnail...

However, not that i've been importing these past three months they only show up as the default movie icon. I thought this wouldn't be that great of an issue, I simply ignored it and carried on.

Now that i have bulked up on my video camera collection (3812 video clips to this date in past three months) it has made it virtually impossible to make this a quick activity when wanting to find certain files, i have to individually watch each and every one until i stumble across the file i want! Which is a massive time waster! And it's only bound to get worst as time goes on.

I decided to reinstall WMP 11, DivX Codecs...No help, then i went and downloaded and installed various codec packs, still no help. I then uninstalled some random codecs in the hope that it wasn't a clash of conflict amongst the lot.

I googled the issue, a lot of the findings linked me to this forum, and found how various people were able to fix the problem by run - > REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL, still no help.

I then followed the proceedings for the Windows Registry Edit in relation to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as located at Read more

I'm wondering if there is a way to use my own custom thumbnail images for videos in Media Center. It is currently displaying them as a screenshot from the actual video file, which makes it difficult to tell what video it is just by glancing at the image. Thanks.

Answer:Media Center Video Thumbnails

Found the solution:

Just put your custom thumbnail image in the same folder as the video file and give the image the same name as the video.

Is there a way to disable loading of video thumbnails like there was in XP? It preventing me from moving/renaming/deleting videos while it loads the thumbnails. I know there is an option to disable all thumbnails and just show the icons but that is too general for me. I just want to get rid of video thumbnails.

Answer:Vista: Disable video thumbnails

Maybe switch the view to Detailed or something other than it's current setting?
I'm pretty sure theres a way to disable the thumbnails, but I'm not with my Vista PC right now

Trying looking in Folder Options.

I was curious if there was another video player out there that offers a visual thumbnail in the play bar like Pot player. Can't find any settings in VLC or any other player.

I don't why it's doing that now, i downloaded the latest firefox and the video thumbnails don't show it only happens in youtube,, also on IE 8 it works fine, thats strange, also would IE 8 Beta be a better option than FireFox thanks.

Answer:YouTube video thumbnails not showing.

Try clearing out your temp internet cache and then updating Adobe Flash Player (download)

or try the following T/shooting steps

also would IE 8 Beta be a better option than FireFox thanksClick to expand...

Definatly NO, as IE8 is still beta, while the final version is likely to be good, this current version is still buggy and its never wise to use a beta to try and fix a problem as you may end up with many more issues that you barganed for. Try IE7 with YouTube and see if the thumbnails show.

Ok... i have some computer knowledge, and i can google with the best of them but I haven't found a complete fix to my problem... here we go... got video from this last waterfowl season... on my old Toshiba satellite which was running windows 7 home ed, i was able to take that video (.MOD) format and put it straight onto my computer into a folder, and i would have a thumbnail of maybe the beginning of that video... That computer's Hard drive crashed... so i bought a smaller Toshiba like T135 or something without a disc drive, which also has windows 7 home, and I am able to get the thumbnails on that coomputer also... however i bought this Dell Optiplex GX280 which has Windows XP on it... I bought it because it would be a better video editing computer than some small laptop... This computer has good stats, but alas i went to put my video on and i opened my flash drive and I have 0 photoed thumbnails... now when i first started this, i had the factory Windows Media Player... no thumbnails with it... then upgraded to media player 11, still no thumbnails... all it has is the WMP icon and MPEG... if i need i can take a screen photo and show you... so i've spent the last couple hours googling and found what seemed to be a solution by downloading this codec which a few people said fixed their problem... Stinkys' MPEG-2 Codec Installer... I download and ran this... now it wasn't a complete failure because one of the sub-folders inside the main folder finally c... Read more
