I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Surprise! AMD shares internal Fury X benchmarks ahead of review embargo

They are 4GB of RAM short of the promise they made, but they are 10 miles ahead in their Red vs Green B.S.

I like green colours much better though

Answer:avira anti-vir update problem (surprise surprise)

From their help index:

The updater ensures that your Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic program is always up to date. With the aid of the Scheduler, you can set whether and at what intervals Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic carries out a comparison of versions. You can define a certain time or interval. However, it is possible at all times to start the updater manually (either via the Control Center or via the tray icon). If an updated version or a new virus definition file of Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is available, an update is carried out.Click to expand...

and also:

Scheduler

The Scheduler index card enables you to configure timed scanning and update jobs and to adapt or delete existing jobs.
You can define that Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic searches for new virus definition files on the Internet server, for example, every 6 hours, and where appropriate loads and installs them. You can thus always keep Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic up to date without manual effort. Or you define that Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is to scan the computer for viruses and unwanted programs, for example, daily at 22:00.Click to expand...

I have Avira. I have not had any problems with updates (I've checked). Mine is set for every 24 hours. Check your scheduler. I would even try changing the interval to, say, every 23 hours to reset it. It may help.

I know some have had problems with this program upd... Read more

Imagine my surprise this morning when booting into my Technet provided Windows 7 RTM to get a pop-up telling me that my Windows may not be genuine.

Unfortunately one can't validate it until after October 22 as the WGA verification hasn't yet been updated.

I guess I shall have to grin and bear it?

Windows is activated OK and updates are coming in as usual so I wonder what suddenly triggered that? It's the first time I've ever seen it actually.

Answer:Surprise, surprise, Technet Downloads Aren't Genuine??

Ex_Brit

I have seen it once before and in that case the system clock was fubared. Simply setting the system clock (it was off by 6 months) fix the WGA and random networking connectivity problems

Finding out for a friend so don't have any numbers to hand, just know that her DELL INSPIRON 2200 hasn't started up for a year or so and now has decided to do something about it

I'm guessing the best thing to do, as it never manages to load windows, is to restore it to factory settings, and re install windows??? - This is what i have been told so far.

If that sounds about right, how do i enter bios and restore f.s. ?

Have looked for a nice step by step guide for how to do this but not found one

I have an understanding of computers however have never had to do anything like this...

Is it me or are there a lot of problems with Inspirons? either that or theyre just very popular with people who manage to mess it up!

Hi,

I have a problem with Vista, yawn I hear you say. I have a decent spec laptop Hp Pavilion dv 9500, dual core processor, 2.00 GHz. I had 2 GB RAM and it was running slow and so I upgraded to 4GB RAM, which is more than enough I thought. But no, CPU usage is up over 90% most of the time and regularly maxes out at 100%, the memory upgrade made absolutely no difference. I should point out that I fix people's PCs for a living, but I can't fix my own problem, definitely no viruses and there's nothing hogging the CPU usage, when sitting idle, explorer.exe is at 50%.

So, has anyone any ideas on how to troubleshoot this or should I just install XP, don't really want to, I have a helluva lot installed on this machine. What about upgrading to Windows 7. I have to admit I know nothing about this, haven't even seen it, will it solve my problems, can I even upgrade now for free?

Cheers, super forum btw, use it for fixing problems all the time

My grandma's computer was recently infected when she clicked a link in a facebook message. After speaking with some people and posting questions to different areas online, I received advice from a gentleman at All Experts to download and run Combofix. I did and it appears that it has fixed the problem. But, I do not know how to interpret the log and the instructions say to post the log to this forum either way to be sure that the infection is fully removed. So, I have attached two logs. The first is the log after the first Combofix scan during which I was not able to download and install the Windows Recovery Console. The second log is the scan that took place after I manually installed the Windows Recovery Console. Please let me know if you need further info. Thanks in advance!Joel

Hello all,

I'd say my desktop 'puter has been pulling the Google redirect thing on me for about a year. I've tolerated it, because it has been intermittent, but I've noticed that over the last three months or so, it's become a daily occurrence, which has become very annoying. I use a wifi router (netgear), and have noticed a very significant decline in connectivity to the point of a slow crawl. Don't know if the two are connected, or separate issues.

I'm pretty much a noob, as far as diagnosing/dealing with these type of issues, so would appreciate it if whomever came to my aid kept it simple and assumed nothing about my relative knowledge in this area.

I'm at least grateful that I was able to dig around other forums long enough to learn of this potentially invaluable resource. Hopefully, someone will hold my hand through this infuriating ordeal.

Thanks!

I have already had some problems with the sims 2 and managed to fix them, at least i thought i had, let me get straight to it.

when i play the sims 2 after about 20mins or so the screen goes all blurred then comes back to normal but freezes although i can still hear it and gives the following msg. "SYSTEM SETTINGS CHANGE. You must restart your computer before the new settings take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now? Yes:No"

if i click on "yes" the screen unfreezes after 10mins but another 20mins later the same msg appears. it makes no differance whether i restart the computer or not.
if i click on "no" the game stays frozen and theres no way to turn the computer off without unplugging it.

please help as i haven't seen anyone else with this problem yet.

I just switched to a new router (from DLink DIR-655 to TP-Link Archer C7) and now my Windows 10 Pro cannot see network shares nor can others on the network see its shares. Prior to the router switch, it could see shares and others could see the shares it exposed.

The Win10Pro can see the internet. I can still ping other computers and they can ping the Win10Pro, just no Windows sharing. All computers are in the same Workgroup. I am not using a Homegroup; computer connections are made with user accounts.

The Windows 10 Pro is connected via wire. When I made the switch, I remember that Win10 came up and told me it had a new network and prompted whether to allow network discovery - to which I said yes. I thought that odd at the time since changing the router didn't change the NIC connection from the Win10 -- but whatever. However, it did change the IP address on the Win10Pro from what it was. But I've since rebooted all computers (thinking that might cause them to refresh) but no improvement.

Advanced Sharing Settings are set as:

Private: Network Discover = ON, File and Printer Sharing = ONAll Networks: Password Protected Sharing = ON, Public Folder Sharing = ON

Answer:New router: Win10 Pro shares no longer visible, can't see other shares

Has nothing to do with your router. It is a SMB 2 & 3 issue with Windows 10. There has been a long ongoing discussion about this problem, that is in a sticky if you look in the list of posts for this forum area. The other is third party Network Security software that the user has not ran to update the network info for the net LAN to be trusted.

It's a bit long, but any help/opinions would be appreciated !

I have two XP computers, one laptop using Intel 2200BG wireless, and one desktop (which I don't use a monitor for, and control via UltraVNC).

Anyways, I just updated the firmware on my Linksys WRT54GS, and set all the settings again. I also went and got Intel's PROSet software for my wireless. From then on, it said that TCP/IP was disabled when I right click on the system tray icon and click Repair. I had this fixed by reinstalling the drivers three times.

I manually configure my IP address (192.168.1.99), and this has worked in the past. Anyways, I share my C and D drive by making the username/password for XP the same in both the laptop and the computer, an account with administrator privileges (I like to share all my files, as my main computer does not have a monitor). I use XP Pro file sharing.

But after the update, whenever I try to connect to the main computer (which is in the same workgorup), it will say "network path not found". The drives I've mapped also don't work (from the same computer).

I can, however, connect to my other desktop which is connected via wireless.

I can still access my computer via VNC, and when I go to the My Network Places on my main computer, and view the workgroup computers, it says: "The list of servers for this specified workgroup is currently not available."

Networking is not exactly my strong point..

Question: Norton Fury

I run Windows XP Home. A fortnight ago, I discovered I couldn't update my Anti-Virus online and so I sent to PC World for Norton Internet Security (as I don't live in a large town.) This installed without hitch, as did Save and Restore, which is supposed to be an improvement on Norton Ghost. However, yesterday morning there was a red X on my Norton icon, and an error message saying I should Fix a problem, ie. Auto Protect, which wouldn't work. This proved not possible, and so I uninstalled Norton Internet Security, plus Save and Restore (which was necessary to do the former) and then reinstalled. All works fine now. What I need to know is - is this likely to be a regular occurance, as there was no special reason why it happened in the first place? I spent a whole morning just to get back to how things had been when I switched off the evening before.

Answer:Norton Fury

rosie, the judgement about Norton is still out there and you will find ardent defenders and opponents of norton products, it sometimes appears like a fight good against evil...Speaking from experience,it unlikely that some unexpected occurance like you described takes place again.i have no answer about the "why it happened".If you ever need to unistall a Norton product-Norton has its own unistall programme: click herewhich you need to follow to the letter.

This means she can't install AOL (she has a modem) and she can't install software such as Microsoft Word. Question: Webcam lag fury!

My girlfriend and I live a couple of hours apart for the time being. We use logitech webcams for video dates in the meantime. She got hers from walmart and I think it's one of the more entry level models. I thought I was being smart and I bought the C910 which is HD capable, but its total overkill. Anyway, for the most part our video chats are smooth. On occasion the audio from her end is garbled and I miss words. Sometimes the image freezes as well. She says that my picture freezes up quite frequently. We use Logitech Vid HD for now, but I'm not overly impressed. I have no reason to believe that I'm sending or receiving in HD at this point. Let me describe some background stuff so I can get specific advice, if possible.

1) I have a desktop pc with wired gigabit internet.
2) She uses a laptop with wireless internet in a top-floor apartment in a building mostly made of metal. Even when we talk on the phone, she can move around in her apartment and have the call get dropped. I think this is the #1 problem here. The router for her internet is downstairs from her.
3) I'm not sure if I'm totally not to blame, sometimes Vid HD will tell me that MY call quality is low. I had a USB port short out a month ago, I'm not sure if that might be messing me up.

My girlfriend is a peach, but she can't make heads or tails of any technical talk, even when I try to put it in plain terms. I have a very hard time telling her that 'it's your terr... Read more

I couldn't get MS Fury to run with my joystick until I tracked down this fix. It runs fine with a Logitech Attack 3 USB joystick on all my XP and Vista machines with the following procedure:

Right click- Fury Icon on desktop
Select- Properties
Select- Compatibility Tab
Check- Run this program in compatibility mode for:
Select in pulldown- Windows 98/Windows ME
Select-Apply

I haven't tried it with Windows 95 selected in the pulldown.

OK, I know it shouldn't be done and I shouldn't bother, but how can I have users with different levels of security in XP Home?

My options now are

Administrator or Restricted

thats good and all but my client wants to set his son as restricted but then he can't run pre XP computer games.

I have tried running them in windows 95, 98 2000 whatever compatability modes to no result.

have also tried hacking the boot ini to let me boot up in safe mode and changeing the folder permissions for that user but this also does not work.

it is thus very annoying that only the Admin users can play these old games and not 'restricted' users any advice?

I installed Microsoft's Fury 3 ( A Windows 95 era game) on my Windows XP system. It does not seem to recognize my USB joystick. The joystick works in the Windows Games and Controller window as far as calibration.......

Answer:Fury 3 joystick trouble Please help

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it would find it because USB wasn't around when it was released...USB support wasn't included in the original Windows 95. And it wasn't supported at all in Windows NT.

The XFX R9 Fury will not show a signal. Most of the time it will power on, the pink light will turn on for a split second then go off, the fans go to full speed and no signal shows on the monitor. Every now and then the light will stay on for about half a second and the monitor will show a split second of the first Dell boot up screen before the light and screen go off and the fans go to full speed.
old HD7870 GPU works fine. So far I have tried; updating the BIOS, resetting the CMOS, removing all old display drivers, using a different HDMI, removing all hard drives.  Even upgraded the PSU from a corsair CX500M to a corsair CX850M. Still no luck.

Ok, I got a friend who has a:

K7 Triton 400 Gigabyte Motherboard
Model: GA-7VAX-A

And a Fury Rage Pro video card

has a problem.. He JUST GOT his new motherboard and now when he tries to run anything in 3D his computer stalls or everything goes black. His video card worked fine with his old motherboard so I just assume it's a compatibility issue. Can anyone help? RSVP.

Answer:GA-7VAX-A and Fury Rage Pro don't mix... -_-

Ideally, you would not want to use such an old card with a new motherboard. Without looking up the specs on this board I assume it only does AGP 1.5V cards not 3.3V cards which the Rage Pro might be?

Another question... was the harddrive formated and all the new drivers installed for all the hardware(downloaded from the internet) or was the harddrive moved from another system with windows 98 already installed? If moved this could be the problem - soemthings moving Windows has odd side effects if it is not format and reinstalled.

I think you may have answered this before, but I installed Microsoft's Fury 3 ( A Windows 95 era game) on my Windows XP system. It does not recognize my USB joystick. I know that there was no USB in 95, but is there a patch or some way to make the joystick work with this game. The joystick works in the Windows Games and Controller window as far as calibration. Is my only way around this to find an older computer and use that to play the game?

Oh BTW.... It's totally offtopic but ok... How can i tell how much power supply im getting right now? (Sorry if the question maybe seem stupid)

Thank You in advance.

Purchased a new Dell XPS desktop from Best Buy May 2016. Stock RAM is unknown 8GB x 2.
Bought some Kingston memory from Amazon to add to this machine, I purchased Hyper X Fury HX421C14FB2/8 DDR4 8GB 2133 Mhz x2 and when it came, installed in my machine two empty RAM slots. Shut off power, restart machine (Windows 10) and machine did not boot, only got flashing amber power light, 2 flashes, then 7 flashes, then repeat...
Removed Hyper X RAM, machine boots normally as before.
Kingston website memory finder tool says I should have bought Kingston KCP421ND8/8 8GB
Not sure what the difference is, if any? Anyone have any insight into why this Hyper X Fury did not work? Any idea if I can use this Hyper X Fury RAM or am I hosed and just get the RAM recommended by the Kingston website app?

It is just about 2 years old 32 meg video card. I hope someone out there finds it to be familiar.

I just tried to install Links 2003 and the system is telling me that I do not have 3D video.

I have tried to get info on the video card but so far no luck in determining the 3D capabilities.

Does anyone know if it is a 3D card, or how to use the computer to determine whether or not is?

I had suspected a lack of driver because the Device Manager shows the WinXP driver as the installed driver for the device. I tried to download a new driver but it said I had the latest.

I have a Gigabyte 970a-ds3p MB and just to get it going I stuck in a phenom ii x4 955 (the 95w tdp) and a 8gb hyperx fury 1600. Cpu-z shows it running 1333 (actually 1339). I have looked every where and similar problems show changes in BIOS, most to enable XMP. Hyperx fury doesn't use profiles and it is automatic set. The BIOS registers it as a 1600 stick but not real time speed. I thought it might be a limitation of the CPU but many people have posted phenom ii 955 with ram at 1600 stable. I haven't tinkered with BIOS, I was familiar with some AM+ BIOS and they were delicate so I didn't want to go stomping around in this one even though I've heard they are forgiving. Any one familiar with this want to give me some suggestions? The BIOS version is FD.

I have finally given in to friends telling me that I should upgrade to XP from 98SE and now find that both my video card and sound cards cannot find a correct driver. The video card is an ATI rage Fury Max dual processor and the sound card is an Aureal2 or Sonic Vortex2 (depending on if you believe the box/manual or IRQ printout that I keep, not sure what the connection is here).
My system is an ageing Athlon K6/2 450 with 320Mb RAM and a 90Gb HD. 98SE worked OK but I now want to benefit from XP having seen it on my laptop.
I know the processor isn't the fastest but it is within the MS minimum specs.
Can anyone help with drivers or should I just reformat and reinstall 98?
(a new pro & m/b are presently beyond my budget)

Hello, I need some help.
I just bought a new computer that I cant get to run any 3D games.
It works fine with everything non gaming related but when I start up games like
black ops 3 , gta 5 , project cars, rust , wildstar I get in the menu and can start the game.

But when inside the game when its finished loading I might be able to play for 2-10 seconds
and the screen goes black (shows a disconnected hdmi cable icon on monitor) while the audio
keeps running in a loop for 4 minutes. Then the audio and lights on my Razer keyboard and
mouse dissapears. Meaning both the speakers and mouse/keyboard loses connection to computer
aswell.
I've tried pressing alt-enter, alt-f4, ctrl-alt-delete, alt-tab but it dont help.
I have to press the power button down for 5 seconds and reboot.
The things I can play with great success however is League of Legends, Diablo3 and
Adventure Capitalist. Ive play these games for hours no problems except for one:
In League of legends I can only play on the map Summoners Rift, if I play on the higher
graphically intense map "ARAM" i sometimes get back screen.
Oddly enough 3D Mark Advance benchmark program works fine. Ive ran it about 30 times

I have a wireless network at home with a laptop using XP Home edition and a desktop using XP Pro. The Laptop is a Dell, so I don't have a CD of XP Home (at least I don't think so). I got the desktop second hand, and only have a cert for XP Pro. Both XPs are SP2. Having set up and shared what I want, the laptop(Home) can see and update the shares on the desktop, but the desktop(Pro) cant see anything of the laptop. IPCONFIG shows router DCHP handing out addresses OK. laptop(Home) can PING everything, desktop (Pro) can PING everything EXCEPT the laptop. both computers can access the internet OK. I elected to join a Workgroup when I installed Pro, and both systems have the same spelling. Browsing the microsoft windows network produces the workgroup in it, but clicking on the work group produces both computers on the laptop(Home), but no members at all on the desktop(Pro).

I have messed about with some of the security policies settings in Pro, but I wish I hadn't. All the data is safely backed-up!

Answer:A sees shares on B, but B can't see shares on A

Check your firewalls on the laptop. Since you can't ping the laptop from the desktop I would bet 10 to 1 some firewall is enabled - I.E. Windows firewall, Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm and so fourth.

Just bought a 19" Gemstar LCD flat screen monitor. It works perfectly when plugged into my laptop. On my PC however, it only works in safemode and normal bootup with the lowest resolution (600x480 8bit). I have to press f8 during normal boot up though and select "enable vga mode" everytime so it will show the desktop with the lowest resolution. It would've been fine, except that the screen seems way too large than what I'm used to, can't even see the bottom areas to click the ok or cancel buttons on some settings. Can't change resolutions either, whole thing just restarts the PC. If booting up normally without pressing f8, a blank screen just comes up after the initial boot up and XP logo screens. Also tried to disable my start up items to see if it might be other software problems/conflicts possibly causing the invalid mode but all that did was cause my PC to give a nasty error that I've had to resolve.

I have Windows XP Pro SP1 and an S/I ATI Rage Fury 32mb/TV cmpl video card. Does anyone know if updating the video card fixes the problem and if so, which driver needs to be installed? Tried searching the net for this problem, the nearest one I found is the thread but it still doesn't answer or help with my dilemma:

Any help/response would be appreciated. Thanks.

Windows XP Setup

Setup was unable to open information file fxsocm.inf.

Contact your administrator. The specific error code is 0x2 at line 0.

any way to get it working?

Answer:a big surprise

Hello Rita G.

You should have 2 copies of "fxsocm.inf" on your machine.

C:\Windows\inf
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

You will have to show hidden files and folders to see them both
Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options

After the new window appears select the View tab.

Put a check at ?Display the contents of system folders?.

Under the Hidden files and folders section check ?Show hidden files and folders?.

Remove the check from ?Hide protected operating system files?.
Ignore the warning message

Press the Apply button and then the OK button

Do you have both of these files?

Try replacing the one in C:\Windows\inf with a COPY of the one in C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

I have a 19" monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, 160gig and 80gig HDD's, dvdrw, dvd player and so won't need any of these new. Where and what can I get for £700 which will use these things I already have. Any recommendations greatfully accepted. Don't want to be building anything myself but I can install dvdrw and hdd etc. if you know what I mean.

Question: 'Surprise' Trojan?

My daughter has an older computer that she bought second-hand. It runs Windows 2000; has an Intel Pentium 3 processor. She got an email that she thought was from her dad (used his email address) with the subject "Hello! Surprise for you!~~~~~" & a link...you guessed it...she clicked & now can't even get her pc to run in safe mode...The link reads: after the usual http, rapidshare.com/files/207323378/SWFree.exe So, my first question is, What the *frel* is it? & of course, the second is, How in the *frel* am I gonna fix it when the cpu usage goes to 100% even in safe mode after a few seconds? Can you kind people help?

Answer:'Surprise' Trojan?

Is SWFree.exe or any suspicious processes showing in Task Manager? When you experience or encounter strange behavior, always check for new, unknown or suspicious processes that may be running on your system. If SWFRee is showing in the Prcocesses tab, highlight it and choose End Task, then peform your scans.Did you do a physical search of your system for that file? My home PC has XPpro, Norton 360...
First trouble was 2 weeks ago, I brought a flash drive from work to download some things on, and my PC started a continuous warning pop-up that an "unrecognized USB device" was present (& could not access it) - continued even after the drive was pulled; had to reboot the PC to resolve. This flash drive works fine elsewhere.
NOW in same session last night... NEW ISSUES... 2 possible causes?:
1) had email with embedded link to a "surprise.exe" file. no subject line, and I did NOT click on the link, but did (automatically) open the email.
2) same flash drive plugged in, worked briefly, then started the "unrecognized USB device" warning. On reboot, the USB port was totally unresponsive. I tried a USB hard drive in same socket, & the PC was unaware of its presence. I ran through the Windows trouble-shooting, to no avail.
Ran Norton 360 - found no issues (except a cookie).
RESULTS: 1) no USB connectivity
AND 2) the internet access started to die (I would be on a webpage, click a link, and it would work a long time, then maybe come up) Then the connection to the internet AND the email both failed. Other PCs on our LAN still have full functionality for online access.
HELP!

I know that IE 5.5 is riddled with problems and bugs but I was hoping that by now someone has figured out a fix for some of them.

The main problem that i'm having is that when I go to a web page I get the "no page found" error, and I have to always refresh in order for the page to be seen. Is there anyway to fix this? I have no icons on my desktop because I read that those could hurt your connection but it didn't help any. Also, when I go to a web page, sometimes I have to hit the "back" button for the page to show up, as if it somehow went one page to many. Is there anything that i can do to fix this? Thanks

So I recently removed some unknown vital file and had to use HP's recovery disk. After that, Opera commits a crime every time I hit flash or streaming realvideo (the lowercase is no typo ). IE also won't recognize them, although (I think) it didn't crash. I tried to reinstall Opera (with Java) and Flash (twice!), and reduced hardware acceleration to 1/4. No use. I'll try to to take acceleration further, albeit unwillingly, but if that doesn't work, what can you recommend? Should I tinker with read-ahead optimization?

Answer:I have a problem. *Surprise!*

Plurals,
There's something you need to know about the HP Recovery disk. Even if you choose the non format, and it looks like your programs are still installed, they are not. You need to reinstall all your programs for them to be installed and function correctly. If after you have reinstalled all the programs you had added and you still have problems, post back.

Hi.A few days ago my computer was infected with surprise.exe. I've really tried to remove this using last known good configuration, avast, spybot, a-squared, lavasoft and removing a suspicious file using Hijack This. However I'm still getting browser redirects and chrome crashes so I know I didn't get it...sigh Normally, I would find documentation and follow the steps, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate anything step-by-step for this particular virus.I've gone through the steps in the Preparation Guide and will post below, with the exception of the Kapersky online scan which the site says is temporarily unavailable, as I'm sure you already know.I really appreciate your time everyone, and thank you for the help!!!!Mina:) DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Princess Pookie at 14:32:05.26 on Mon 02/01/2010Internet Explorer: 6.0.2900.5512 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_17Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.1022.182 [GMT -5:00]AV: avast! antivirus 4.8.1368 [VPS 100201-0] *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {7591DB91-41F0-48A3-B128-1A293FD8233D}AV: a-squared Anti-Malware *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {0F8591BB-342B-4493-91C3-4E948ED21255}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcssvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\Pr... Hi

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2, and have been trying to keep my computer as clean as possible; It has only been a couple of months since I formatted my hard drive.

Anyway, Its running fast and everything, but earlier this week, I installed Norton Antivirus 2007. With the "scan outgoing messages" function on, my screen often becomes flooded with "scanning message" popups from Norton. When I turn off my wireless, a message pops up saying the 20 or so messages that didn't get scanned had failed. I recognize NONE of the addresses, and the subjects give away the fact that the messages are spam.

So I have now been lead to think that I have a really nasty trojan on board somewhere, could anyone take a look at my HT log and help me out?

Thanks

Sam

Hello Sam and welcome to TSF,

Yes, you do have a trojan that is responsible for the outgoing messages.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

I've got my Desktop (brand new build) upstairs, which I've covered in the 'System Builder' thread... got kind of tired of the background, so I swapped it to the snorkel image.... very nice and serene blue.

Yesterday I was watching my X-Files blu-rays downstairs and decided to flip open my laptop that's always on the coffee table & check my e-mail. Its sharing a Network with the Desktop, but is a 4 year old HP that I still love to use. It comes on, and I see its background matches the one on my Desktop..... except I didn't change it. It should still be the bridge picture.... wtf?

Answer:Windows 10 surprise?

If you've signed in to the same account, the background will sync

Whats more annoying is that i use teamviewer to access my home PC quite a bit(on it at the moment), it removed the desktop background. Every now and again i'll lose my backgrounds on both laptop and my desktop as teamviewer doesn't seem to always put the background back.

Answer:virus surprise.exe log

Good evening. Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs.* Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start. When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply. Let me know how the PC is behaving.* There are two points to note from the instructions page:1) The Recovery Console. It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.CF will complete some, but not all, of it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console so, should you choose not to allow the installation, you may not get the results you hoped for.2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for either.

Hello fellow forumites.

I'm sure this is going to feel like an awful clone of a message but since I don't fit into the "experienced" category I'd rather tread the road of caution than march forward blind as a mole.

I'm having problems with the oh-so virulent Spyware Sheriff. I'm also having these files startup every time I reboot:

own.exe
eres.exe
sefer.exe OR sefe.exe
protect.exe

they come back no matter how often I delete them (because, ya know, delete something enough it HAS to go away, right? )

Appearing around the same time these did is a DAT in my C:\Documents and Settings\<username> file called ntuser. I've never noticed it before, and it was created at the same time as the irritants above.

I've already extracted Hijackthis into C:\Program files\HJT.

Thanks for any possible help!

-Da Mose

Answer:Problem (surprise?)

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Download HijackThis 1.99.1

Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

Run HijackThis and save your log file.

Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

in the art of powerline networking - mainly because it's not that common in the field - so I'm not well-qualified to provide you with an answer. I can produce a theory however, which is that the 2.5mm conductors in mains power cables will have a considerably increased resistance, when compared to the conductors in ethernet cabling. This might well the the cause of the slow internet connection, although it might not - I'm no electrical engineer, either.

Just a heads up to let people know there is a new virus going around that instructs you to click on a link and downloads a file called surprise.exe. According to this website http://tools.cisco.com/security/center/viewAlert.x?alertId=17965 it is malware.

What's interesting is it was sent by a man I was engaged to 4 years ago and no longer speak to. He was unaware his computer was automatically sending e-mails to everyone on his address list when I spoke to him. That is how the virus spreads itself. And it is especially deceptive because it is being sent by someone you know and may trust.

I just wanted to FYI people!

Sorry if this is indeed old news.

Hey all,

My first post here and I'll start off with my unexpected, depressing story.

First off I must say I am panicking and depressed because my laptop caught a nasty virus, DNS, the nastiest of nastiest viruses.

Being the piano nerd I am, I tried to download some piano sheets for my next project. Usually, I find one, download it, and print it, but this particular one was a bit weird but being very stupid, I proceeded to download the "music." Unfortunately, it slowed down my device significantly and pop ups were everywhere. I have had these sort of things happen before so I went to the Control Panel but deleting them took forever on one thing and couldn't get any more to uninstall.

Discouraged, I attempt in vain to open up chrome or at least internet explorer to download the cleaner. But chrome died after 2 seconds or I would download the cleaner but it wouldn't open because I "didn't have the sufficient app for the file." Later things turned out for the worst as Chrome gave up struggling and I was stuck with Internet Explorer. To add insult to injury, even that didn't work as proceeding to google was impossible. So I am turning to you guys, and I sincerely hope I can fix this VERY soon as I need this quickly. Thank you in advance!

I recently bought a new computer and have today plugged it in and set it up (Preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Premium x64). Everything was fine for a couple hours as I was going about installing a few minor things (flash, quicktime, etc) then the BSOD's started.

I wish I could say I had an idea or theory as to what was causing them but I don't. The most I've had going on when it BSOD'd sometimes was just mIRC, Chrome, and Trillian; while the least I've had going on was literally just Chrome as I searched for answers immediately after other crashes.

Originally when I was trying to look up information I saw others having similar problems; I saw some suggestions that Norton was causing problems for them. So I uninstalled it and even used the official removal tool afterwards to be certain there was nothing left behind to cause me grief. Still it kept blue screening. Thus here I am since this seemed like a nice and helpful place. I have no experience resolving blue screens at all so any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Answer:Surprise! Windows 7 BSODs

The first one,..Probably caused by : afd.sys Which is a NIC driver problem. I would look around for the most recent NIC driver you can find for your system.

Second one is, des2svr.exe, not too sure on this one.

Third is the typical, Probably caused by : memory_corruption, Which can occur if memory settings aren't correct but shows up for many other reasons.

In fact the last three dmp's point to memory corruption so you may want to look up your memory settings and make sure they are correct.
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: X64_MEMORY_CORRUPTION_STRIDE

You may also have some faulty memory so you should test it using Memtest. I like the Windows version but you can use the .iso cd of Memtest86+ to test if you want.

okay this is weird - i havent been doing much on my comp - yesterday night i let a,i think, responsible adult use my comp - and afterwards i turned it off.

so today i turn it on and i get the F1 message - hardware found an error - press F1 to skip F2 for setup - and i dont kno what to do in setup - so every time i press F1 - it laods the "SONY" screen - and then resets back to the F1 page.

then miraculously after manually reseting the computer a couple times it loads normally. - I update Comodo firewall and reset the comp for the update.
-Heres the odd part

1) a message poped up and said "Configuration has been changed - you need to reset" - I dont know why this poped up - whats wrong now? - i suspect i have spyware quake but am too lazy to remove it recently- but could this be involved?

2) also what is Last Good? - i found a folder - in windows.

p.s. i dont think it matters but - extra info - no internet for three days -- exchanged modem, called & fixed, so Avira updated itself after being deprived of internet. another odd thing - i distinctly saw a light on my router saying an ethernet is plugged in - when its not, before i had the "reseting problem"- but afterwards i forgot, but its off now.

Original post:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...us-344797.html

So I've recently discovered that I have a virus in my C:\Windows\System32 folder call rqRHYOFu.dll

Normally I would change the name of the .dll file to VIRUS1 or something of the sort and delete it, no problems.

However this one keeps telling me I can't delete it because it's being used by another program.

Most people say "Just find the program in the task manager and end the process... blah blah blah." Well that doesn't work. I've ended almost every program I could find and still it won't change.

I can't boot up in Safe Mode, don't ask why.... I can't.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I should do. This is causing me annoying pop-ups, even in Mozilla Firefox. It also seems to automatically change my IExplorer options to "Accept All Cookies" even after I set it at block all cookies. Maybe there is a way to find how the program opens or something.

I've even tried unregistering the file in command prompt, it just says it can't be registered, so I guess it's already unregistered.

This is very frustrating and this file is slowly eating away at my computer. =/

BTW if I change the settings to "Block All Cookies" the pop-ups stop. So I know this is the problem. Just have to find a way to delete the file, or at least change the name. I've even tried changing the program the file opens with to Notepad.exe, no luck.

Please, any help w... Read more

when i start up my system all seems fine untill i have to choose user then the colors are all messed up i don't know what heppend because it happend over night, first i decided to just go with it (thinking it might just be a small glitch or something) but then i realized that it was indeed not my wallpaper is coverd in blobs of blue and purple colors. removed the graphics card (Winfast A350 XT TDH) and then it worked fine however then i can't play my games, tried re-installing the card but then the blobs appears again.. any help is very much appreaciated

ps sorry for the spelling.

Answer:Surprise blobs of colors

...

Greetings, BushidoDK...

The blobs of color may be 'artifacts', which are most often caused by overclocking, but may appear when a graphics processor is deteriorating...

The fact that when you removed the Winfast and the problem corrected certainly leads one to suspect the graphics card...you might try downloading and installing a different driver, but it sure sounds as if a video board purchase is in your future...

Good luck!

Hi everyone,

I just opened the Teamspeak app and I was asked whether or not I accepted Teamspeak's new "privacy policy".

Does anyone know what this will mean for users?

What kind of privacy or personal information are Teamspeak users giving up?

This is the link that contains Teamspeak's new "privacy policy": http://la.teamspeak.com/2/en/la_desktop.html

Thanks!

New to Tech spot here, heard this might a good place to find answers. Sort of computer savy but not engineer smart if you know what I mean.

I have read numerous BSOD threads and most of the solutions that applied to me I have done...for instance: I have replaced hard drive, had mother board and memory (RAM) replaced. Here is what I am dealing with:

Brand new Emachine T3304, right out the gate kept getting BSOD. Did memtest, no errors. Did what I mentioned above, kept getting BSOD. But the strangest one was when I rebooted in Safe Mode, I got BSOD even then! Does not stop there. I did a full system recovery, reinstalled Windows XP, did not even install drivers or any devices and first time it boots up, got BSOD.

The only thing that I can point out is that there is a loud ticking/clicking sound coming from hard drive which I was told is a sign of a bad HD.

Also, some BSOD comes with no errors, some come with the thread "page fault in nonpaged area", but not always.

Somebody please help...any suggestions are most welcome!

Specs: EMachine T3304

2.01 ghz AMD Sempron

256 mb RAM

120 Ghz Hard Drivw

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6100

Realtek sound Card

Mother Board: dunno

Attached are minidump files, hope I uploaded them right and hope they help.

Answer:Surprise...BSOD desperate

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

5 minidumps crash at SYMEVENT.SYS. This is part of your Symantec/Norton security product.

This is a known issue on some systems/configurations.

1 minidump crashes at win32k.sys. Windows Multi-User Win32 Driver.

The best advice I can give you, is to get rid of that Symantec/Norton crapware.

Get AVG free and Zonealarm Instead. You can get them HERE# and HERE

Your system will run a lot faster without Symantec/Norton`s resource hogging crap.
