Display settings OK/Apply timeout

Question: Display settings OK/Apply timeout

In Vista when I select Control Panel> Adjust screen resolution I get the Display Setting Dialog box that allows me to select my monitors and then select the Resolution and/or if I want to make the monitor my main monitor/Extend the desktop onto this monitor and to Drag the icons to match the physical location of my monitors. All of this works fine... Except when I want to accept what I have done. I do this with the OK or the Apply buttons.

When either of these buttons are pressed the screen goes blank, there is a pause and one sees another screen that asks that you confirm these setting. For a time prior to a recent Microsoft Vista update, I had about 5 seconds to confirm my settings, but recently the time needed to complete this procedure has expanded and I now only get this screen for less than a second and I cannot press the necessary button fast enough to accept the new settings and the operation is defeated and the screen goes back to its original settings. Is there any way to extend this timeout or any other way to configure my multiple (three) monitors????

Preferred Solution: Display settings OK/Apply timeout

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I sometime change my resolution for Various Purposes. I find it a bit of a nuisance to have to click keep changes whenever I make a change. I've been searching for sometime now but am unable to find a way to reduce the time from 15 seconds to 0 or remove it all together. There must be a setting in the registry somewhere. Can someone point me in the right direction?

For example I have a folder in my desktop with pictures, videos, documents, music, etc. I organized it by grouping by type, somewhere between large & extra large thumbnails, and a few other things. I want these settings applied to all other folders. I went to folder options and applied it to other folders. Nothing changed. My other folders, including my picture folder is still the same way it was. How do I apply to ALL folders?

Also 2nd question - I know you can zoom in on thumbnails by hitting ctrl + mouse scroll wheel, but is there a way you can do it with a keyboard and not the mouse?

Each time I start up settings in display properties resets to
Screen resolution 640 X 480
Color Quality low 8 - bit
I rest them to
1024 X 768

apply and restart and they reset to the above.

The correct monitor and Adapter are selected.

I ran a update search for each and it says I have the latest driver version.

If I need to update the monitor and Adapter driver what version and where do I need to go?

Any Help would be appreciated.

I have a Samsung Galaxy TabPro S and there is a very annoying problem to do with the display where after it times out, the display will not immediately wake up. Windows isn't in a sleep state as my music still plays in the background while the display is off. I have also turned off connected standby in the registry.

An example is when you leave your PC on and the monitor turns off but the PC is still running and not in sleep or hibernation, but when you shake the mouse or press a key, it will not instantly turn the display on and seems like the display itself has went to sleep.

Is there a setting I can change to do with the display itself so it wakes up immediately on keyboard/mouse click?

TLDR; Display itself takes very long to wake up rather than instant after screen timeout. Looks like the display has went into a form of sleep rather than Windows 10.

Hi all!

A few months ago, I got a WD My Book Live 2TB network drive. The purpose was to move all my files to it, so any computer or device in my home will have access to them. I managed to free up over 40GB of space that the files were taking up on my home desktop computer.

Last night, I was organizing some files on the network drive, and I noticed there was a folder with documents I no longer need, so I hit Delete followed by Enter. I hadn't realized what I've done until the deletion process was about halfway through. Turns out I wasn't deleting the useless folder (and its contents), I was actually deleting the Pictures folder. I pressed Cancel as fast as I could. The folder I was trying to delete was still there, but half of an entire lifetime's worth of photos were gone. No Recycle Bin or Trash, they were just permanently deleted.

The good thing is I still have a copy of the photos on some SD cards (just gotta find them). But I don't want anything like this to happen to more important files. I thought there might be some kind of security setting I could use on important files so they can't be deleted (unless I change the setting back). Does this exist? And if it does, how could I use it?

Answer:Apply security settings to NAS

You can use the folder's Properties > Security Tab > Advanced button, to uncheckmark Modify and Write. This will prevent deletion, but also prohibit you from adding to the folder.

We are on a domain, but a lot of our people work in the field. We are trying to find something other than a GPO.

Our Medical records system requires specific IE settings. I cannot manually change all settings now due to existing GPO's that are in place. If I were to get a clean install computer not on our domain and manually set the IE settings as needed, can I then
export those settings and have those exact settings apply on all domain users computers? If so, how do I do that? I need specific steps so since I am not well versed in this. I saw one post where someone said, import/export file, then export the file. That
doesn't help. How do I do that? What type of file is then output? How do I apply that file to other users computers. Example, we need trusted sites zone edited, but cannot, because there are existing GPOS. I just want to set IE settings, export those settings
and then have them apply to all domain accounts.

My Windows updated on Monday and it removed all my view settings for my libraries. For example, Pictures used to be medium icons, sorted by date modified, and grouped by nothing. I changed it back to that, but every single subfolder is still set to the default.

I tried going to the folder settings, view, and clicking "apply to folders", but the button is grayed out. I then deleted all Bags/BagsMRU registry entries in hope of fixing it, but no dice.

I don't remember having to do anything special for this back when I got Windows 10, so I think something got messed up in this update for me.

Please note that I can use "apply to folders" when I'm outside of my library and it works fine. I successfully applied the correct settings to entire folder trees, but it doesn't work for the libraries.

As I said, I believe this problem is caused by a specific add-in that is somehow preventing Outlook to terminate within what Windows believes to be a reasonable amount of time.  From there, I suspect Windows thinks the application is hung or has stopped

I really do not know what to do with this. Every time I open up my web browser, instead of going to my home page, it opens with 'Customize Your Settings.'

Has link "Choose your settings" in order to complete installation. So I click it, and I choose my a)Required settings and 4 b)Optional Settings, then complete the process by clicking on 'save your settings.'

'Save your settings' becomes 'Applying settings...' and that is how it remains for however long I have the page open. It will remain that way literally for hours, with nothing that can be done other than to close the browser.

But my new settings do not apply, my installation does not complete, and the next time I open my browser, this window loads again. So what do I do to complete the installation and get my browser to load to my selected home page?

Answer:IE7 Final install step - Customized settings will not apply

Have you tried uninstalling it completely, rebooting and then installing again?

As title.

I've begun to use TeraCopy, which is much better than the stupid Win7 copy handler. There's just one problem:

When TeraCopy moves a file from a user-owned folder to a public folder, it retains folder's user-level permissions. I can manually give access to Everyone for this folder, but it is very annoying.

So, I'm looking for a way to easily remove a folder's own permission settings and make it use only inherited permissions.

I'm running Windows Vista and the main account used for installing programs has been configured completly. IE settings, WMP settings, desktop, icons.....

Can I apply the same settings to the other 3 accounts in the PC?

How can I do this?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:Vista...Can I configure one account and then apply its settings to all other accounts

After a quick glance, this process doesn't seem any different than previous OS's.

Configure your user account (don't forget screensavers, background, etc. everything will copy over). Log off and then back on as a different user with admin rights.

Right click on my computer, choose properties, goto the Advanced tab, click on "settings" in the User Profiles section. Select your profile, click COPY TO, click change under "Permitted to use" and choose everyone, then browse above to the specific profile. You can copy to individual profiles, including "DEFAULT USER" which will cause that profile to be used by every new profile created past that point.

I have a small problem.
I tried overclocking my GPU.
The settings are applied in MSI Afterburner. (I also tried Ntune)
But it isn't applied on the GPU itself.
I tried to OC the GPU core clock to 600 Mhz, but it is stuck at 405 Mhz (Shader clock is stuck at 810 Mhz, and memory clock is stuck at 405 Mhz as well)
According to GPU-Z my default clock is: GPU clock 520 Mhz; Memory clock 500Mhz; Shader clock 1230Mhz
But in the sensors tab it just shows 405;405;810 again..
(So it's underclocked?)

One weird thing I noticed is that the max. GPU load is 99% and not 100%... why?

Also added two attachments (screenshot & specs)

My temperatures are fine (I think), since the max. temperature is 95 degrees Celsius or something. And the card becomes 45 degrees celsius on full load. (measured using GPU-Z and Speedfan; fully loaded using FurMark (1024x768, no Anti-aliasing) And the GPU core is 37 degrees celsius when idle.

Thanks in advance,

Haven't found any references to a setting..does anyone know if such as setting exists? I don't have too many clients running this....but one I recently did...the end user, who has a somewhat larger mailbox (approx 1 gig)...his Outlook keeps going into a "not connected" status.

Decent internet connection at both ends. 10000/1000 at the host office with under 6 users, 6000/384 at his remote office with approx 6 users, only 2 of which are using Outlook over HTTP.

I was originally running him in cached mode...I removed that setting last week...but didn't seem to help.

No software firewalls on either end. When it goes into unconnected's not "work offline". His internet connection is still good when it drops.

Prior to W10 Upgrade (when I was on W7), my laptop would go 'off' - as programmed in my Settings - after X minutes' idleness (though if I caught it as it was just going off, & I tapped a key or moved the mouse, it would revert to the screen (progs, open windows etc) I'd been using). But since W10 Upgrade, it now switches off after 2 minutes and I have to log back in (ie using password) to get back to where I'd been. I have tried (umpteen times......) to find a Setting which is NOT already set to my desired 10 (for battery) or 20 minutes (for when plugged in). I've even tried changing them to 'never'. But nothing works. I don't use a Screen Saver, and - so far as I'm aware - have never used a 'Lock Screen' option, & I always use it plugged in. I'm not on a 'network - I'm the sole 'Administrator' / User. I have been unable to find this subject on Microsoft's W10 forum, nor found other users reporting the same problem. Any ideas would be most welcome.
UPDATE: Feel v. embarrassed - have just seen similar post (from rpol16, 2 weeks ago). Have now tried CaesarMagnus' trick of switching on using the power button, instead of the mouse, & - hey presto - no more "sleep after 2 minutes' idleness" problem. As he says, it's not really an ideal solution but it's good enough for me, so Thank You !

My school's computer administrators had the bright idea of making the systems forget all changes whatsoever whenever you log out or reboot to make it harder to mess up a system and to prevent people from moving things around/etc and making things a mess for others. Which is fine. Problem is, they just never get around to configuring quite a lot of things, such as MS Office, which creates a painful hassle every single time we use them, which is every class meeting in one of my classes.

What I'm wondering is, is there maybe some sort of way you could create a script of some sort that would apply all of these little settings, everything from showing extentions of filenames and changing to list view with the status bar on in explorer to providing that first run setup stuff for things like office and opera (which has horrible defaults IMO)?

I've tried talking to them, but, the only time I got anything through at all was when I finally managed to convince them to install video drivers instead of using only the built in XP crap (which, btw, is painfully slow even just raising/lowering a window) and this was because a software that was absolutely vital to one of the classes would not run at all due to requiring the specific OpenGL driver provided by nVidia (which btw, is stupid as it's a 2D java-based program utilizing exactly 0 acceleration, but, that's a matter to take up with Oracle, not the admins here...)

Besides, quite frankly I think t... Read more

Answer:Any way to apply windows user specific settings via script somehow without reboot?

Sounds like your administrators have implemented Mandatory Profiles which means ANY changes you make to the system will be overwritten. Even if you decided to try to make changes to the registry, the only way to implement the changes is to logoff/logon again, which in turn will overwrite said changes. There's no way around Mandatory Profiles...hence the name.

I've duplicated this message on the modem forum too - I hope you don't mind. I'm baffled.... I don't know if it's a modem problem, a trojan, a corrupted registry, or what...

Recently my dialup connection (Smartlink 56k modem on PC Windows XP Home Edition) has been ignoring all the settings for the auto-disconnect when idle for n minutes.

This problem is driving me up the wall, as it worked fine for 18 months. Now, whatever I do, my dialup connection remains active. I've been through all the modem settings and reinstalled the modem, etc.

I'm at a loss to know where to look. What could have changed. I did have MSBlaster, but cleaned it out. I have installed Zonealarm firewall, and it tells me that I am getting "pinged" every 30 seconds or so, but I don't know if that is affecting the "idle" condition of my modem. I have tried shutting down everything and having only the dialup running - still it remains active indefinitely.

Any ideas?

Win 8.1 Pro, Hyper-V v6.3.9600.16384
I have set a VM for "Always start this virtual machine automatically".  But when Windows and Hyper-V start up, this machine is not starting.  I have alternately tried going back to a different setting for startup and coming back to auto
start thinking it might reset some internal 'switch', and I have tried 0 and 30 sec delays wondering if there are delayed services, but I don't know what those might be.  But I would think when Hyper-V starts, it should be fully ready to go.
I have Hyper-V also running on another machine (Server 2012 R2) and it behaves properly.  Of course the only time I shut down the server is for software updates as required, but when I do that, Hyper-V automatically starts all its VMs per

What things can I look at to determine why Hyper-V is not starting the VM automatically on this Win 8.1 machine, and what might I do to fix this problem?

I have created an automatted installation for Windows 7 via AIK and I am setting the UserLocale, UILangauge and Inputlocale for specific regions. I then saw this aritcle furthest below (see: "Apply regional and language settings to reserved accounts") and was
wondering if there are other autounattend.xml paramters that also need to be set to ensure these "reservered accounts" are set for the proper regions.
Please note: I want to keep the base language for Windows and the SQL Collation set to en-US, just the default users regional settings (UserLocale?), UI (UILanguage?) and keyboard (InputLocale?) settings need to be country specific.
In my Autounatted.xml file I have all the Locale settings set for en-US in the 1 windowsPE section. I believe these only apply for the actual installation process and not the final Windows deployed image. Is that correct?
I believe I need to set the locale setting in either the 4 specialized or 7 oodesystem pass to affect the installed system.

InputLocale to the specific country such as da-DK (Denmark)

I'm officially stumped trying to get this figured out. Over the past two weeks, my PC started to get BSOD's all the time, and it seems to be the ATI driver, which has been stable since it came out.

I've attached a minidump of the latest crash. Can anyone help me get this diagnosed?

- Win 7 Home Premium X64
- Upgraded from Win Vista [shockingly, no problems until now]
- OEM Install

- The system itself is about 2 years old, built around a QX9650 and ATI 4890.
- OS install is about a year old, and in good condition (not installing many programs on the primary drive, and keeping the registry in good shape)

OS was fine until about two weeks ago. Only thing I did was a bunch of windows updates [I have since system restored, which wiped out almost all my dumps...]. Heat is NOT a likely cause (watercooled) either. Hence why I'm stumped, as nothing obvious comes to mind.

Also tried 10.12 CCC drivers for ATI, with same results. Recent system restore returned to 10.4, which again, was stable for months before this cropped up.

Also, both games and video playback can randomly cause the issue. Seen it happen in 5 minutes, and seen it happen after 90. Seems totally random near as I can tell.

Using a 7 install DVD, you can get to a command prompt, if the system in unable to boot to use. [System Recovery Options]

This tutorial covers it, in case you need one made as well as shows a screen shot.

Hi everyone. new to the forum. Trying to find a solution to my problem.
I have vista ultimate on a DELL XPS laptop.
I have 2 user accounts, both admin.
The second account i setup today by default had the windows classic

i clicked on the "Theme" link in the personalize menu, nothing happened
- no popup or error message, literally nothing.
i then tried clicking on display settings, same thing. Same thing for
Window Color and Appearance and Screensaver. The only links which work
from my personalize menu are "Desktop Background, Sounds and Mouse
Pointers". Same problem happens in the first user account too i checked.
Im running latest version of norton antivirus, and have run a scan with
nothing detected.
Any help or fixes would be greatly appreciated. google wasnt my friend

I have added the Console Lock Display off time out to the advanced power options. However; the display does not turn off after locking the desktop. The only solution i could find in Windows 8 was to reset the user security policies , but i cannot find that option in Windows 10. Any help is much appreciated.

I've just gotten a BSOD saying my display driver timed out while I was in windows. The monitors lost their image, and began searching the various ports for a connection, then the BSOD showed up. This is the first time I've actually seen it happen, but I believe it has happened before since I have come back to see my computer has rebooted/shutdown.

This OS is a Full Retail fresh install as of about two weeks ago. The system is brand new as of about 2 weeks ago. The only pieces I've retained from my former computer (which was about 3 years old) are the power supply, some hard drives, and the keyboard. Any other information should be listed in my system specs.

I'm planning on overclocking, but I want to get this BSOD sorted out before I do.

Thank you.

Answer:BSOD in Windows Display Driver Timeout

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Answer:BSOD attempt to reset the display adapter timeout

Hi -

The error you are describing is a Video TDR timeout. There are 2 bugchecks associated:

0x116 = driver was unable to reset within 30 secs; BSOD ensued
0x117 = same as 0x116, except the driver did ultimately reset. This is called a "Live Kernel Event".

See if updating your video drivers helps.

Answer:Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed!

You are correct to update your video driver:

Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys (, 9,40 MB (9.853.248 bytes), 14.07.2009 00:09)

Are you saying you are not able to update the driver? Are you able to remove the driver? If so, you can use Guru3D to remove traces of NVidia, then reinstall video driver.

Guru3D - removes leftover traces of drivers for NVIDIA (Display and Chipset), ATI (Display), Creative (Sound) Realtek (Sound), Ageia (PhysX) and Microsoft (Mouse)
If this is not the case, let us know.
You should also update your Realtec network driver:
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\rt86win7.sys (7.2.1125.2008, 136,50 KB (139.776 bytes), 10.06.2009 23:18)

My system always runned pretty smooth, running BF4 on high setting with no problem, but last week my computer got pretty hot playing Borderland 2 and crashed on a BSoD. Now every time I start the game after 5 or 10 min playing I crash on the same BSoD : Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

I run a Toshiba laptop Qosmio X870 equipped with a Geforce GTX 670M.

-I've tried several drivers roll-back as well as a re-install of the latest version : 337.88. Always the same crash, on some older version of drivers the crash only occurs quickly.
-I've tried re-installing windows, same result, crash after 5 to 10 min.
I've tried the windows hotfix for this problem : microsoft fix it 50848
But still got the same crash, the game only freeze a bit longer before I got the BSoD

I run on directx 11 version and my windows 7 Home premium 64bit is up to date

I haven't tried any other game then borderland 2, but before the overheat it was running smoothly. The system is running good and I'm not overheating when a crash occurs (at least not my CPU cause it's the only one I monitors) and my fan don't even run at max speed. No lag in game, everything is normal before a crash.

I think the heat may have damage my GPU, but I wonder if here is any way to test it, or if any other thing I should try before I go on with a GPU replacement.

Have been having this problem for a while now. From reading the forums I figured it must've been a faulty VGA. Tech support has replaced it for a brand new and have also given me a new PSU/Power Brick.

Whenever I tried to do anything that was VGA-demanding, it would blue screen on me, even after a fresh format. Both the new VGA and PSU have not fixed the problem, they gave me a bit more gaming time before BSODing, but not much.
Things I've already done:

- Formated the computer;
- Did a fresh install of my NVIDIA Drivers (using the remove program);
- Did a memm test, 4 passes 0 errors;
- Installed new VGA and got a new PSU (as already stated);
- Reinstalled the games that were crashing;
- Used FurMark on 1080 for 16 minutes, temps never went higher then 95 degrees;
- Tried the Windows Fix thing ("Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in Windows 7 or Windows Vista)

Uploading the files to see if I can get a better insight before I send this back to tech support for another week of tests. Honestly don't know what to do anymore.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

What gives?

Check the BIOS, there is probably an "instant off" or 4 sec delay option for when you press the power button while the PC is on.

Can't find one. Apparently the only way to invoke a change is to hit the X button. Which is a pain if I want to look at alternatives. Maybe a keyboard shortcut?

Answer:"apply" button for settings

Windows 10 uses the "new" approach to user interface. When you make changes in a non-modal settings window, they apply immediately, without waiting for you to hit any buttons. There's no need and no point in Apply button for such settings.

If you want to return to higher level settings window you hit the "back" arrow in the upper-left corner . If you want to leave settings altogether, you hit X.

this is a strange one to me...

the hdwe is a hp "minitower" athlon processor, embedded nvidia vid, fairly fast and responsive on a good day.
I worked on this system a year ago, obsessively, setting up Vista as well as is possible - lean/clean/stable.
recently the primary user account, upon logging in, gets a "noise" display on the monitor that looks like an inability to sync.
I shall not rule out the possibility that an "extortion-ware" malware is causing this but extensive checks don't show any malicious thingies. There is a lightly used, tech-support second user account that logs in fine.
I set the display properties on the troubled account, the display looked normal again, but after a couple of days of use, the bad display issue is back.

is this a known issue? video refresh rate anomaly ??? why would it be "fine" for a year, then suddenly develop the problem? debug steps?

I worked on it 2 weeks ago and it was fine when I finished, now in the ditch again so I'm fishing for new debug steps to try and determine what exactly causes it to go non-linear...

thanks for your suggestions

On the Portege M200 tablet PC bought by me recently the problem is that at a resolution of 1024x768 the display on the screen is not very crisp and clear where as it is ok at the peak resolution of 1400x1050.
It is very difficult to work at peak resolution for long hours as the size and readibility of text is too tiny on a 12 inch screen. Is there a way to get around this problem by getting clear and crisp display at resolution of 1027x768 or any other.

Answer:Portege M200 : Hazy display on 1024 x 768 display settings

Hi Puneet

To give you a short answer: no.

The background for this lies in the way a TFT is built.
You have the number of fixed pixels in the TFT that corresponds to the best resolution of the screen. If you want to have a lower resolution then the screen and videocard have to figure out how to show a picture that is smaller (less resolution f.ex. 1024x768) on a bigger screen (higher resolution f.ex. 1400x1050).
The way the video does it is that it will double or tripple (or whatever is needed) a piece of data that normally is shown only on 1 pixel.
Means that it 'stretches' the picture over the screen.
The result is that either the picture is crisp but looks like a 'staircase' or 'mosaic' (like when you zoom in on a digital photo too much) or as of now the videochips does some tricky mathematics to smooth the picture but then it gets like you say - hazy.
If we could disable the stretch function, then you would have a square in the middle looking crisp but still very small (in fact the same small icons as in 1400x1050) and with black borders around it.

The only way to go lower in resolution and still have a crisp picture is to use an external monitor (either CRT or a 1024x768 TFT if that is the resolution you need).
The CRT can handle the stretch in a much better way because it does not have the fixed pixels exactly the same way the TFT do.

Sorry for the long speech! :)

I've tried searching the forums but haven't been able to find anyone with the same problem, so if a thread already exists and I just failed at finding it please point me in that direction.

I have a Lenovo L440 laptop running Windows 10 1607, it has an Intel HD Graphics 4600 video card which lists the last available driver as 15.40 from the 23rd of June 2017.

It has an issue where I connect a projector and I get the flashing display to indicate another display was detected and connected, but nothing displays out to the projector (which is set to use the correct input). I press the shortcut to duplicate the displays and nothing happens. I go in to display settings, and see 5 displays (give or take depending on the laptop) despite only one external one being connected. If I tell it to use displays 1 and 2, nothing, so disable display 2. Then tell it to use displays 1 and 3, nothing, so disable display 3. Repeat this process enough time, it'll eventually come to the display the projector is configured as (sometimes having to add additional displays to what was being shown originally).

It's OK for me to do this as I'm the IT guy, but it's not OK for the staff to do this.

Here is a sample screenshot from another machine with the same problem. Only one external screen (2 in total) is connected.

Some machines with more up to date video cards such as Intel 540's have had driver updates putting them to 15.46, and the problem is thus resolved. It's back to behaving as expected fo... Read more

I'm experiencing BSID issues apparently due to graphic card.

Computer:vaio vgn-fw51mf laptop
system : windows 7 home premium 64 service pack 1.
graphic card:

The issues started with computer bugs when Alt-tabbing, but one day I got a "Attempt to reset display driver and recover from timeout" bluescreen and since then the only way to make the computer run properly is to disable the graphic card driver from the control pannel.

The bluescreen does not allways appear, but the screen frequently goes black just right after the windows screen, or sometimes windows starts but I immediately get continuous ?Display driver stopped responding and has recovered? errors.

Initially I thought that it was a hard drive issue, as I've been running the computer several months with an almost full hard drive, but now that I freed some HD space (205 free GB out of 454 GB) the problem persist.

I tried to unistall my drivers and update them: any results. I hope not have a hardware issue!

Please, any help will be precious!
Thanks in advance

I need a batch or similar type file that will "detect display" from (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution).

HP dv6 use switchable graphics and they can be seriouly problematic to update. Anyway the only way i can use the latest driver is if i put up with aero not starting properly sometimes. I found out it's becasue the laptop is randomly deciding to switch to display 2 - when it should be 1. No display settings in that section will change when its in that state until "detect" is used.

Then i run a batch i have that restarts aero and it goes back to normal.
"net stop uxsms
net start uxsms"

Basically i want a batch(s) to detect displays and restart aero on startup. Im on windows 7.

My computer illiterate uncle's computer is acting odd. Well, at least the display properties is. Every time he tries to apply or even press ok, the display properties window freezes, no matter which tab he goes and what he changes. The computer itself does not freeze and every thing else is perfectly able to run without any harm when the display properties window is frozen. What I noticed (and he didn't) was that after a certain amount of minutes (around 3 or 5 minutes) the display properties becomes unfrozen and you are able to fully operate the window without any hassle.

When I end tasked the display properties, it said that Rundll32 has ended or whatever (the usual thing it says).

What I found odd is that when he would change his resolution, the background would practically cut in half. One part (usually the top) would stay the normal background picture and the other half of the picture would turn black.

I've never really encountered this problem before.

For extra info: he's using Windows XP.

hi all,
as ucan see this s my 1st post in this fantastic help forum..

well, ive a weired prob., its all about strange ping replies we got from any
client within our small switched network, we're currenly ve a 1Mb ADSL,
clients linked with 3 dlink switches and one Thomson 500 adsl router..
pinging to any domain would result in this very weired behaviour..
btw: we didnt expirienced this b4 imean this's a new thing we're facing,
and sometimes the replies come so normal..

any clues?? can it be the dsl provider itself??

Answer:wiered pings! 300ms..timeout..300ms..timeout!!

Somewhere between you and about 1 packet in 6 is being lost or delayed beyond ping's threshold. Maybe the destination site is busy, maybe your ISP is busy, maybe general network congestion. Not desirable, but not so weired either.

Just installed 7 Pro x64 and it seems to me that previously on XP, when you go to your control panel and display settings, in the display dropdown there was an option for your monitor and another for the graphics card. However with 7, I only see the option for the monitor. Is this normal?

Answer:Display settings "display" dropdown options

Small correction: what I see in XP in the display options is a default card driver and then the actual video card driver. In 7, I only see the monitor name as an option. Is this just the way 7 works? I'm not sure the graphics are as they should be. They seem a little choppier than what I expected.

How can I be sure the video driver is being used?

Question: Display Settings

Hello again, this is only a very minor thing, but try as I may I just cannot work it out.

I set my power setting to shut the monitor down after 15 minutes, hit apply and then OK, it does it ok for the day but when I next turn the pc on I have to reset it. It is still showing 15minutes as the shut down time.

I am running win 2000, and this has only happened after my new harddrive was installed.

Is this your personal computer or one that you use at work?

Do I need to update a driver and if so which one?

Answer:display settings

Just purchased a new Acer Aspire X1200 Computer with Vista Premium....Having a problem with text which is huge.

Contacted Acer and they told me to do the following:

RESOLUTION- Move slider to resolution you want then click apply...

So, I followed the instructions but the problem is that the "Move Slider" is barely showing and the "Apply" can't be accessed due to the fact the page with this info has huge text. Tried moving the box but that doesn't help....This is so hard to explain....

Also, on the DPI scaling page...To change from custom scale to larger or default scale can be done but the area at bottom of page to OK change can't be seen or accessed. due to large text.....I have moved the task bar but that didn't help, either.....

At present the setting is at 1280 X 1024 32 bit....
The monitor is SAMSUNG SyncMaster 753DF......apparently the maximum for this monitor is 1280 X 1024.....
Also, the computer has an ATHLON Dual Core Processor 4850E....

I just want to reduce the size of the text......I guess that means lowering the settings but I can't do it...

Also, the text to submit here is very small....Sigh.....

Would anyone know how I can get to the "Move Slider" and "Apply" section?

Thanks for any help forthcoming. I'm thinking of going back to pen and paper..You know, to write..That is if I can remember how to....

Answer:Trying to display settings....

Can you please atempt to start in safe mode or Enable Low Resolution Video (640x480) the next time you boot the pc?

You can do this by tapping the F8 key while the computer is booting up. This should allow you to see the full applet for video.
From there you can change the defaults and start windows normally.

Good luck.

Question: Display settings?

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes...

I am using QuickBooks at work for bookkeeping. No problems until they sent the 2007 upgrade disk, and I installed it.

Now, there are some windows in which I cannot view the whole window. The right sides are "cut off"/not viewable. This is annoying because some of those areas have buttons I may need, yet I cannot read them, nor click on some of them.

I called QB tech support. Of course, I got a person whose native tongue is not English. Her solution (out of the book, I'm sure) was to change the display settings. I have my settings at 800 x 600. Anything larger than that makes everything appear smaller, and I cannot see things! (Typical, right?) We dickered about the settings - she wanting me to use 1152 x 864 (???HUH???, never, in all my computer years, have I ever seen that setting offered), which is QB's preferred display settings. She kept telling me to move the "arrow" to "between the lowest and next point".

That is where my question lies. IS there a way to manually adjust settings to something like QB "prefers"???

My monitor is by NEC. MultiSync LCD1735NXM. Is that the problem???

Question: Display settings

At start up all my icons are huge. I change the color settings to smaller and next time I boot up I still get the large icons. A similar thing happens in the same area: In order to download my printer I get the message that color should be at 16 bit. It then tells me to reboot. When I do, the setting goes back to 8 bit.
I set "startup normal" at the beginning of boot (where the safemode is) and in other places. But it always reverts back to what it was. Where can these changes be locked in?

Answer:Display settings

You probably don't have the correct video card installed. Install the latest video drivers from your manufacturer.

A relative of mine has Dell Optiplex 170L with XP Pro, that he managed to infect with Spyware. He spoke with Dell who advised him to reinstall XP. Since he did that his display is all over the place. With the colour scheme all garbled, lines through objects, items missing from the display etc. I tried to reset the display settings but there is only the one coulour scheme (low 8 bit) and one resolution setting (800x600). I wondered if XP had reinstalled corerctly or is it a driver issue ?Who knows what might have gone wrong, and what to do next. thanks to you all.

Answer:XP Display settings

Looks like a driver issue try windows update to c if there an updated version there and / or find out what graphics card is in there and have a look on the manufacturers site.If theres any disks that came with the pc you could have a look on them to c if they have the driver for the graphics card.

Question: display settings

I wonder if any one can help? A friend of mine was given a 14" colour monitor (unbranded) to replace is old one that was broken, but he can only adjust the vertical hold and not the horizontal as there is no button for doing this,he has loaded the latest driver for his graphics but he still has black spaces either side of his desktop display, I think the maximum refresh rate is 50 Hz.the model number of the monitor is(JK1461) and the o/s is Windows ME.

Answer:display settings

First of all readjust the vertical hold until there is the same space at the top and bottom as there is on the sides. Then try setting the display to the lowest - maybe 800 x 600 - if that does not fit, try a the next setting.

hello all!
Sorry if this is a really silly question, but I can't fathom it out! I have just downloaded a recommended update from Microsoft driver updates - ATI display software, dated January 2002, which seemed a bit odd. The result of this is that everything now appears much too large! I can no longer view web pages in total if I have the bookmarks down to the left, and I cannot change anything in Control Panel as fonts and icons are not listed as large.
I don't know what I have done!
Am I missing something really obvious?

Answer:Display settings too big!

Sorry, should have said, I am using XPPro

Question: display settings

I just cleaned my system but the display settings are still jacked up. Everything is really big: icons, open windows, text, mouse, etc etc. The colors are extremely pixelated and there are only 16 different colors. I have tried to set the display properties back to normal, but the screen resolution is stuck on 640x480 and the color quality is stuck on 4 bit. I troubleshoot but it says everything is ok. I'm running xp sp2. Any suggestions?

Answer:display settings

You need to reload the driver for your particular video card. Then you will get the opportunity to change things back to the way you like it.

First off let me get out that I havent used any windows products in my home since win98 i think it was. Because of various circumstances such as getting a 64bit processor and seeing that microsoft was offering a trial for win xp 64bit pro i thought i would try it. I also have a monitor that rotates which is something i really enjoyed utilizing on my linux box, cause i was able to rotate it no issues under linux. Now though, the operating system that what is it said to be at 75+% people use, cant rotate a monitor for me .
If you could it would be great if you could help me with this what i would consider small problem,
Please and Thank You

Answer:Not sure how to use display settings

You need GPU drivers from nVidia.

Then you will see more options.

I have a computer made by Tiny, which has a graphics card in a PCI slot as opposed to being onboard graphics. The computers sees the card and says it is working properly, yet each time I input the display settings to give me a normal screen resolution, the computer says I must restart the PC for the changes to take affect, when I click yes to this, the PC shuts down, starts back up and the changes take place on start up, but as soon as the machine has finished booting up, the screen reverts back to basic colours and minimum resolution. What are the likely causes please

Answer:PC does not keep display settings

Running Windows ME, have tried various monitors, graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 100/200, Have tried minimum and mid range resolutions, not touched any refresh rates and have tried both 256 colulrs and 16bit. Not tried to reinstall drivers yet, as the PC said everything was OK.

Help, please.
My hard drive crashed, before I was able to copy programs off of it. Anyhow, I put in a new hard drive. I then loaded Windows 95 just as before. Then I got a copy of AOL 6.0 and loaded that. Before I had AOL 5.0. With the 6.0 I can't see much of the window listings. They are blacked out. I assume that this is due to the display settings. When I try to change the display setting to 256 and restart, the computer comes up with an error that the display settings are wrong.
What do you suggest? Do I have to get a new video card that supports AOL 6.0? Please advise.

Question: Display settings

Hi All

Hope this finds all with something to smile about in life, I have a question about display options. Twice in the last two days my display setting (two monitors) have changed from extended desktop to duplicate desktop, first time when I re-booted two days ago, second time today after arriving home and booted up then went to check email I noticed the desktops where the same and had to change the setting again.

I have done a search here but not found one with the same problem and I have done a search via Google, anyone have any idea? Wondering if vid is failing maybe

The computer is a Sony Vaio touch screen 24 inch 64 bit home premium windows 7, I was going to change it to Pro but not got around to it yet, and I am using a TV as a monitor so using a vga to hdmi connection for that one, as no vga on the computer, and waiting for the hdmi cables to come down in price, it’s one of those computers where the tower is part of the monitor

Only thing I can think of that was out of the ordinary (thought the computer was just having a hissy fit) as it has not played up since, is that around two weeks ago I was watching a music video, streaming it from on line and all of a sudden there was a really loud noise (continuous one) and my screen went to the boot up screen, so I just held down the on/off button still it shut down, left it off for a min or so and booted the computer back up and it’s been going fine since except for the two times the display option ch...
