Windows update, cannot search for updates

Question: Windows update, cannot search for updates

I am having a problem with windows update. It will not search for any updates, whenever I try to get it to search for updates it finds an error code 80070422. I have tried microsoft fixit tool and the report says Repair default Windows Update locations Not Run. I am thinking maybe resetting windows update locations could help, but I don't know how to do that manually. I have also tried restarting services required by windows update, which did nothing. I also scanned for viruses. Any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Windows update, cannot search for updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. I have a strange problem. I select the option to search updates automatically, but I must start the search manually. Furthermore, windows updates starts but it does not stop more. I used a tool by Microsoft to fix the problem. According to it, my problem was solved. Nevertheless, the situation is the same. What can I do? Thanks and best,                                                                                                            davide

Hi there,

i have a really weird problem on my 7 here. Windows does not look for updates from time to time as it should. The settings for WU are correct, in fact, i tried all of them with no change in behaviour.
When i start a manual search everything is fine, finding and installing updates works like a charme. Nothing special in my windows logs, the whole systems runs just fine.

Anything i could do?

Thanks!

Phil

Answer:Windows Update doesnt search for updates

Well, after microsofts last patchday and a successful installation of all those, windows searches for updates again. Just to let you know.

So, I started off at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/590109/windows-update-stuck-at-0-downloading/ but have been directed here as my problem is no long er malware related. The problem is, I've been trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I do not have the reserve a copy icon on my taskbar. I found this was due to some uninstalled updates from windows update. Previously my update bar was stuck at 0% progress, but this was fixed. Now when I launch windows update I get the message "Install new Windows update software" i click install now and the program closes and relaunches and displays the error message "Windows could not search for new updates. Error code 800F081F". I click try again and the message "Install new Windows update software" appears again. Basically i can keep following the instructions and loop around continuously.

I've tried a Sfc scan with a result of no integral violations

Any help will be appreciated

EDIT:
I'm on windows 7 home premium with service pack 1, 64-bit OS

I have read lots of threads by people with the same problems, and sadly I need the same sort of fix. I have run the fix-it tool and the System Readiness fix to no avail. Examining the files listed in the checksur.log reveals they are empty, with binary zeros.

I have attached my checksur.log file for your viewing pleasure.

Many thanks in advance for any help rendered.

Hi,
I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, SP1, on a Compaq Presario CQ57 laptop.

On 11th May Windows tried to download updates but something went wrong, laptop froze for over an hour and didn't respond - so I held the power button and forced restart. I thought updates had failed but when I turned the laptop back on it said it was finishing installing updates.

However when I logged back in the popup in system tray said updates were available, but would just search endlessly without finding anything.

I ran Windows update diagnostic tool, at first it kept finding error 0x80070057 and 80070005, and "Service registration is missing or corrupt". The diagnostic tool said fixed each time but when i re-ran the tool the same errors were reported and it still won't update.

I tried to use system restore but strangely I only had 1 restore point - 11th May when the updates failed - i have never seen this before how can all my previous restore points be deleted? I restored to 11th May but Windows update is still the same not working.

I have tried the following:

Manually resetting windows update components using the Microsoft article.
Running sfc /scannow (no problems found).
Running extended chkdisk with both options ticked.
Microsoft fixit 50123.

I have also ran the Microsoft Fixit 50202 in both normal and aggressive mode several times.

I am still getting the windows 10 update icon in the system tray. But I'm reluctant to try and upgrade until Windows 7 is fixed in ca... Read more

Hello,

I've been trying for hours to fix a problem with the Windows Update on my laptop. I run Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64.

Lately, I noticed that the automatic update is always installing the same 4 updates and this has been going for 2 months. So I tried to search for the solution on the Internet. I've been doing Windows Fix it, and some other stuff that I can find online but none worked. I did clean boot and disabling the Anti Virus (Kaspersky), it didn't solve the problem. I have also tried restoring the system back to the last time the update was working normally. Still, every time I click check for update, it always produce the red sign with the message:
Windows could not search for new updates
Error found: Code 80080005

Could anybody please help me solve this problem? I am concerned about the security of my computer now.
I have attached the Windows Update log files in case it is required.
Thank you in advance.

Hello -

I seem to be having a snowball effect of errors with my computer. It all started when I realized I couldn't find/install new Windows Updates. I hate to say it, but I went a year without installing new updates. I would always get the error code 80072efd. I tried following Microsoft's help and was able to download and install like 70 updates a few days ago. Since then, I have been unable to use Windows Updates again and am still receiving the same error. I don't want to post too many problems in this one post so I figured we'd just start with this one. Since it seems to be the start of all my computer problems anyway hopefully if I can fix this the other errors with get fixed as well.

BTW, I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, SP 1.

Thanks in advance!

I am attempting to install a fresh Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64 (Retail) virtual machine. When switching to Audit Mode to attempt to install drivers and updates before setting up the final users (the way I normally do), I find that Windows update gets stuck forever (apparently) at "Checking for Updates..." after the single update to the new Windows Update. I have also tried this without going through the Audit Mode on a separate fresh install, I had the exact same issue, so I do not believe that was the cause.

Hello,

I have 2 laptops with the identical issue. I am trying to work on one before fixing the other.

I have been working with another Bleeping Computer tech, and he referred me to this forum.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611431/infected-with-win32bundledtoolbargoogled/?view=getnewpost

the above thread is the last communication that we have had on the topic. My problem is this: Windows Update in Win7 is stuck in a loop trying to search for updates.    At one time, I did an ESET Online Scanner scan and came up with a virus. The virus was cleaned, but I still have the issue with not getting Windows Updates. This one laptop in particular, the issue started when I had Vista on there. I had since erased the hard drive in a 3-swipe process, and I did this 3 times. After the first time, I used Win 7 on there instead of Vista. The problem still persists. Can you help me with this issue? Thank you.

Answer:Windows Update in Win7 is stuck in a loop trying to search for updates

I would say if the system has been checked by others as per your last original post and stated clean.

Then i see you say that Windows Update - stalls ? ... { You could check Task Manager - Running Tasks - and if WU is running ok.
Does this mean the PC is unresponsive or just Updates taking to long ? { No % Increase }.

I have had PCs take over 10 hours to process and then download.

Hopefully all your Services are still correctly Set ? , i would run the Windows Update over night , the longer the better , and see if it can actually complete.

This has been an issue for quite sometime after intro of Win10 , and for Win 7 machines to be last inline and  ess of a priorty over 10.

Hello,

After viewing some great tech support on your forum today that looked like a similar problems I am having, I decided to join the site in hopes of getting the same help.

I went ahead and made a log1, log and info files via that .bat file mentioned in someone elses topic but I also read that I'm not suppose to post any of that until asked. Sooo... I'll wait. :0)

Problems? Well, Avast seems to have more more traces off the viruses I mentioned in the description however I am still unable to update any malware/spyware protection software in order to run it on this laptop; moreover I am unable to get to the windows update page to try to update the computer... the owner of this laptop said they received an update from windows about a month ago.

When I click on the windows update from my programs files, I get directed to google search instead. :0( Before running the avast(avg was installed before but stopped responding) I would get directed to a depression website when trying to type in microsoft.com

Pleaaaaaaaaaaassseee send help.

I'm on windows xp 2002 home edition service pack 3. Thank you

Hi, it seems like I get no more updates offered when I search for updates. My latest important updates are from 05.10.13. Since then I only get the same 42 optional updates shown. Shouldn't there be a few new ones (important and optional ones) since one month? Yesterday I read about the new IE11, that didn't show up either. Is there a website with a history of all released updates so I can check if there are any updates released/available that I didn't get offered in the last month?

Answer:No new Windows updates shown when 'search for updates' - Problem?

IE 11 isn't being offered through Windows Updates yet, except in certain areas.
The latest Important Updates should have been installed around 8th October
What happens if you attempt to install any of the optional updates?
There is no formal list of updates, since the list may vary from machine to machine - however, the listing in the forum stick here is kept pretty much up-to-date.

I have just completed a new install of Windows Home Premium 64-bit with Service pack 1 and the most current rollup update (KB3125574, with prerequisite updates as well) pre-installed. Whenever i try to search for updates with windows update it just keeps searching for updates.

The following hotfixes have also been applied (successfully, none failed):
-KB971033
-KB3102810
-KB947821

Every time I restart windows and try to check for updates, Windows Update reports that it has not checked for updates

and if I try to search for updates it just sits on "Checking for updates..." (for days).

I recently had to rebuild a laptop because the OS became corrupt. (Dell Inspiron 1545, 8MB RAM).  I reformatted the drive, installed Win7 Pro (was running Win7 Home), installed Windows Office 2013 Pro Plus (was running Office 2003 Home), and then reinstalled
the client's personal files (that were backed up).  Everything seemed to be going well with with Win7's automatic updates.  Win7 went through its regular cycles of finding updates and rebooting.
The system just stopped providing updates, so I figured it was done.  This is great! Right?  Wrong.  Before I hand the computer back to my client, I want to make sure it is done finding all the updates.  When I go to Control Panel - System
- Windows Update, to manually check for updates, the laptop just sits in "searching for updates" for hours.  I have left it in this mode for over 30 hours one day wondering if it will ever end with either a list of updates not yet loaded or
"your system is up to date."
In searching for solutions I have tried "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) with no success.
I plan to try the MS FixIt tool, but I am not holding my breath.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might cause the laptop to not complete the process of searching for Windows Updates?  Need your help ASAP.  Thanks!

Hi,
I need to find a solution to filter and find specific updates in the Microsoft Update catalog.

E.g. all Windows 8 or Windows 2012 that have been released after March 2017.

How would this be possible?
e.g. searching for Windows 8.0 2017 or "Windows 8.0 2017" won't give me only updates for Windows 8.0 and not limited to these released in x/x/2017.
If not, where can I leave feedback that filtering options for the search in Windows Update Catalog may get implemented?

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

Hello everyone,

When I try to run windows update I receive the error:

Windows could not search for new updates
An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.
Code 80080005: Windows update encountered an unknown error.

I have had this problem for a number of months. I have tried the windows update reset, the fixit tool, the system readiness update tool and many other things - nothing has worked. Figured I would post here to see if there are any suggestions. I am willing to retry anything I have done before.

Thank You,

Answer:Windows could not search for new updates

Hi,

There could be a number of problems associated with your issue. Do you have Windows configured for automatic updating? Have you ran any scans for malware? Have you made any significant changes to your system prior to this issue?

This could be a Winsock problem. Please open an elevated command prompt (Run as Administrator) then type NETSH WINSOCK RESET and press enter. You will be advised to reboot. Please do so and try updates again.

Also please run System File Checker by opening an elevated command prompt (Run as Administrator) and typing sfc /scannow. (note space between sfc and /scannow. Allow it to run. This will attempt to repair any corrupt files. Please run two to three times.

Report back if this fails to solve the problem.

Good Luck

Windows 7 - Service pack 1
Everything was working great till recently.
Problem started 3 days ago. Updates are set to automatically download and install new ones.
I keep getting Windows Update error 80073712 and while looking at the installed updates section in Control panel there are "No updates installed on this computer" !!!
I did some reading and I tried some solutions with no luck:
1) Run System Update Readiness tool from Microsoft.
2) Run the System File Checker which could not run giving me a "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" message

I also looked in my Windows/logs/CBS/CBS file and I found several errors with mainly " Failed to get CSI store" (if that helps someone).

I've just completed a Windows 7 Professional re install & everything seemed to go ok , but it won't pull in any Windows Updates
I've tried the various Fixit tools with no success.
When doing a check for updates I get "Windows could not search for new updates -error code 8007000E"
Be grateful for any help on this

Answer:Windows Could Not Search For New Updates

This is a known problem on a fresh install. If the Install is not SP1 then download and install the standalone here.

Install IE11 as that is required for Security Updates

If that fails then install the latest Windows Update Agent.  On a fresh install it may take up to two hours to initiate an update.

Some people have had to wait overnight before getting updates. Something has changed on the Windows Update side and it seems priority is being given to Windows 8 and 10.

i just got a flag at the bottom stating that there was an imprtant update and it wont let me update anything and i dont know why any ideas?

Answer:Windows Could not search for new updates

Do you have that your updates are all automatically download and installed?
It may have downloaded and installed.
Go onl;ine to the Microsoft update site and view your history to see what was downloaded.
Another posibility is that you may need to reboot to do the final install of the update.

These are just a few ideas off the top of my head.

It's an HP computer. I'm not real sure about the other specs, but I will post them later if that is necessary.

when i try to update my computer I get the message windows could not search for new updates error code 80070490. I have tried all the repair methods on microsoft web page including renaming folders in system32 and running fixit. nothing seems to work.

Answer:Windows could not search for new updates

Hi tlssio,You stated that you had tried all the repair methods on the Microsoft web page. Could you please provide the link to the page that you accessed so we are not repeating what you have tried?I'm sure that somewhere along the way that you read that the error code 80070490 was an indication of the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) manifest being corrupted. If a system file checker does not correct the corruption, the best thing to do is perform a repair install.Following are the instructions to perform a system file check:SFC ScanClick on the Start button and in the search box, type cmd.exeWhen you see cmd in the list, right-click on it and select Run as administratorWhen command prompt opens, please type or copy/paste the following command into it, then press Entersfc /scannowPlease note the space between sfc / in the command above. <--Very ImportantWait for this to finish before you continue.Once the scan completes, type or copy/paste the following into [email protected] offndstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txtdel %0Click on File > Save As... and type sfc.bat then click SaveDouble click on the batch fileThis will create the file, sfcdetail.txt on your Desktop and the .bat file icon will self delete. Please attach this to your next post.Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions or concerns.Donna

When starting Windows updates for my laptop I get the message: Windows Could not Search for New Updates. Error Code 80072F8F. Checking in help and support the message is: If you receive Windows Update error 80072f8f while checking for updates, your computer's date and time might not be the same as the date and time for the online Windows Update service. Your computer and the service don't need to have an identical date and time, but if they vary too much, it will prevent you from checking for updates.

Is problem has only just started in the 2 days. Anybody else having the same problem?

Cheers

Answer:Windows Could Not Search For New Updates

Is your date and time set correctly on your laptop? If your laptop is several years old you may need a new CMOS battery. The CMOS battery is how your computer keeps the date and time info after your computer is shut off.

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

Hi,

I can't seem to download or install any updates through Windows Update. I get:
Windows could not search for new updates. Errors found: 80070002.

I get this error when trying to search for updates, NOT when trying to install an update that is already downloaded. I can't download updates at all.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

THINGS I'VE TRIED:

I have tried microsofts solution i.e. stopping the WU service and deleting SoftwareDistribution folder. All that did is erase my update history. I sent microsoft several e-mails through their website but never got an answer. I have had this issue sense October 2008.

I also tried disabling my anti virus and firewall software. I use ESET Smart Security (includes AV and firewall). I don't use windows firewall

I have no idea what caused this problem.

The only thing that seems to be updating is Windows Defender. Please take a look at the attached photos below.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

This has been going on since about January. My computer has not updated at all since then because it will not allow for it due to this.

I have disabled my virus scanner and firewall, restarted, and tried again. Still does the same thing.

When I try to check for updates I get an error code saying that I need to install new windows update software but after trying to install it I get an error windows could not check for updates and get an error with the title as an error(error 800703F1).

(might be related) Some days ago windows tried to install some updates but failed several times. Every time I restarted the PC it said the updates failed to install and then I had to re-download them.

So I can't use windows update to search for new updates at the moment. Any help you could give would be appreciated.

Answer:Windows could not search for new updates, error 800703F1

According to err, that error code is:

Code:
ERROR_BADDB winerror.h
The configuration registry database is corrupt.
Given that, I'd restore to a restore point (via system restore) prior to when this issue started, days ago. A Restore point gets created every time WU tries to install updates, so you should have one you can use.
If the problem continues, you can try some of the things here:

Answer:Cannot search for updates Windows 7 after malware issue

Hi have you fun the following HERE

If you have and still have the same issue then malware may still be on your PC as its sneeky and while many all in one security apps may remove most some malware is generally left so best to run the below and if you are given the all clear then post back here and we can try other routes.

But best to be malware free first

This one has been puzzling me for a while, have removed security software so it isn't being blocked.

I'm assuming the two are linked - anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Windows could not search for new updates - Code 80070424

Check you have these services and correct set:

Windows Update -start AUTO
Background Inteligent Transfer Service -start DELAYED-AUTO
Cryptographic Service -start AUTO
Windows Modules Installer - start MANUAL

EDIT

I suspect you don't have Windows Module Installer -if yes you have to extract form your Vista DVD file TrustedInstaller.exe, place this file in C:\Windows\Servicing ,import special fix to registry from SYSTEM account attached in this thread & details here how to do that:Windows Modules Installer missing...
+restart next navigate to service Windows Module Installer (now this service should available) and run it manually

More details about this error we discussed in this thread:http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/197069-windows-module-installer-service-gone.html

I have tried everything that I can think of to do for this issue, including attempting to do a Upgrade/Repair Install, which failed because I have a Dell OEM Vista DVD that does not have SP1 on it, but my computer does and so for some reason that option has been disabled (I have contacted Dell and requested another, SP1 Vista disk so that I might be able to perform a Upgrade/Repair Install at that time but they still have not replied). I have not yet tried clean installing yet, I will explain shortly.

I am just wondering if anyone knows of a simple fix for this issue that can be done by tinkering around with the registry values for the Updates or something else that will NOT require me to completely wipe my system out. I have already tried steps two and three here, but they have also failed. In addition to that, I have also attempted to reinstall Windows Installer 4.5 x86 and that also failed, returning a ?Windows Update Agent Installer Fatal Error: Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error?.

So, if there really is no ?simple fix? for this, I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not performing a clean install of the non-SP1 Vista will solve this issue once and for all or not? Considering the fact that it might very well have been updating to SP1 that caused this issue in the first place, because I had absolutely no issues with anything until after I had performed that major update and then everything gradually just went to hell from there. Answer:Windows Canít Search for Updates Ė Error 80070490

I contacted Dell via their chat thing, and they basically told me I have to wipe my system out and Reinstall the OS. I told them I would much rather be given a new disk with SP1 on it for my system so that I can just do the Repair Install to fix this issue now, and any other future issues that arise so that I would not have to hassle with reinstalling everything, and they persisted that I would just have to do it their way or no way at all.

I tried telling them that installing SP1 on top of their version of the OS is what caused the corruption of the Update feature in the first place and that their method of me trying to fix this issue likely would not solve the problem in the long haul, since reinstalling SP1 would likely result in the same way, and yet they still persisted with that method and refuse to send me what I need to solve the issue once and for all.

I am very dissatisfied with this service, we paid $400 extra dollars for their premier help and support, and this is what we get for it? Screw Dell! I will NEVER buy another system from them again. Ever.
EDIT: I tried running a sfc /scannow in command prompt and after it had run, it said "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to repair some of them". I tried the following command findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt and it did nothing. I am having a problem on my Granddaughter's Dell laptop. She has Vista Home Premium x64 with service pack 2. When I try to do the windows updates, is gives a red error box saying windows could not search for updates. I have clicked on the blue link - get help with this error. I have stopped the update service, deleted temporary update files, restarted the windows update service, installed the system update readiness tool, clicked on the fix it....everything they say to do and it still won't do the updates.

Any suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated. I have spent my entire day trying to get it fixed.

I have also tried to do an update in safe mode but can't get the computer to connect to my network. Get local only when running in safe mode with networking.

Thank you

Win 7 SP1 - Home Premium - 64bit - Dell - 8GB Ram

I'm working on fixing a friend's computer. I've resolved the BSOD problems and the WINWORD issues. But I cannot get it to update. I don't know if it has ever been updated, the CP and the Update screen both say they haven't, but I don't know how far to trust that.

I have ran System Update Readiness Tool, and the 50202 hotfix. The hotfix hasn't helped at all. Registering the Windows Update components has not helped. I've tried downloading some updates manually and running them, but I receive a message that these updates are not applicable to my system. And the sfc /scannow command returns this "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". This seems like a rare error code and situation, so I'm hoping I can get some outside input. I'm attaching my checksur.log as well.

Thanks for any help you can offer. I normally run Ubuntu, so I've forgotten how difficult MS can be sometimes.

From what I've read here on the forums W10 does a cumulative update, meaning all things needing an update/patch are done every time you update. Ideally you would have the most recent updates and OS version/build after updating.

While you're in settings click System > About to see what version and build you have, the most recent for W10 Home and Pro are version 1511, OS build 10586.494. I've included a screenshot snip of mine below:

I just had Windows Update Error 80244019 - "Windows could not search for new updates" whilst doing a manual check for updates.

I ran the troubleshooter WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab in my admin account but that didn't work. I then ran the troubleshooter in Safe Mode which fixed the problem.

What would cause this problem in the first place?

Hi,

I came back to this forum because last time I had an issue people were very helpful and solved my problem.

My problem now seems to have started when a usual update tried to occur overnight on around the 22nd December.

I noticed that windows did not update and got the error code 80070643 windows has encountered an unknown error.

After trying a few things I decided to reset my laptop (Acer aspire 5741-A) with a back up being kept at C drive/ backup.

That didn't work and since then I did some digging and it looked like there was an error with .NET framework. I can't uninstall or turn on version 3.5 on through Control Panel "Turn Windows features on or off" - so can't seem to fix this problem.

I have tried using the tool that repairs NET framework but that didn't work.
I have also tried the tool that removes individual or all versions but that doesn't work.

Also it the error means that I can't install Microsoft Essentials Security either.

Can anyone help or talk me through what they would do?

Thanks for looking.

Simon

Today a message came up saying that windows could not check automatically for updates and after clicking it to search manually I got the thread title as an error(error 8008005).

(might be related) Some days ago windows tried to install some updates but failed several times. Every time I restarted the PC it said the updates failed to install and then I had to re-download them. I didn't give much attention though, so I'm not sure if they did install after all.

So I can't use windows update to search for new updates at the moment.

Answer:Windows could not search for new updates, error 80080005

error messages ending in 0005 are often 'access denied' errors - try this first.....

Open Windows Update
click on Change Settings
select 'Never check for updates' in the dropdown - click OK
Exit Windows Update
now go back to Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Install Updates Automatically'
Click OK
now try manually checking for updates.

Hi guys.
So, after a nice and clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, was trying to update through Windows Update, and I got this annoying error, which I've seen before, after installing W7 on VMware (Couldn't solve this issue even once. I was sure it's a problem with the software).
The error is 80070570 [screenshot attached]. Tried Windows Update Troubleshooter, Windows Update Readiness Tool, netsh winsock reset, clean startup, sfc /scannow, even tried to reset Windows Update components . [Those were suggested in a post by Microsoft community Israel moderator]
They all failed to fix the problem.
One of the suggestion I've seen online was to install IE11 and SP1 (manually). Didn't worked either.
Please HELP

CheckSUR and SFC are clear - but there are some rare errors in the background CBS.log data...

We have a bunch of users who are using Outlook 2010 and their Outlook search function is no longer working. This happened just yesterday which there is no coincidence this
is after Microsoft's big June 2017 patch tuesday. I believe one of the updates has
broken the search. I am trying to determine exactly which KB.

for a couple users i was able to rebuild the entire search index on the computer and
that seemed to work. For others that did not, for those users i even tried restoring the computer before the updates and that also did not work.

Has anyone else had this issue and resolved it?

I should add that they are all running Windows 7 64bit and Outlook 2010 32bit.

Answer:start menu search broken after windows updates

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

The only practical solution I can think of other than a system restore is to go to your Control Panel and check the View Installed Updates list under Uninstall a Program.

You should be able to see the order they were installed by the date if nothing else, and then uninstall them one at a time, checking each time whether your Search function has returned to normal.

Make a note of which update is causing the problem, and then choose the Hide option when Windows Updates again offers the update in question.

Your problem is one of the reasons I always install updates one at a time. It is more time-consuming, but it does give you the chance to isolate any update that's giving you a problem.

Hello,

I'm having issues when trying to search for updates on my laptop.
I have successfully ran SURT. SFC Scan gave me a message saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

The message I'm getting is "Windows Could not search for new updates" error code: 8007370B.

Attached to this post is a screenshot of the error i'm getting from Windows Update. The CSB folder from C:\Windows\Logs>> is to big for me to send via this method (0.2GB). If needed, I can send you this file using another method.

In advanced, I appreciate you help and I hope we can resolve this problem.

I cannot update Microsoft security updates, and pop-ups are opening up with these malicious sites. I have avast and it has not found anything. Malwarebytes found 1 item and deleted it but the problem continues. Kaspersky's TDSS killer found nothing. I have scanned with dds and gmer and have included results. Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! I attached the cbs.zip file and the screen shot of the windows Update Error Codes as instructed here. I'm not so good in computer thing. and not speaking English fluently but i would really try my best to express what i really want to say. I hope I posted this correctly and any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Hi,

Google search results redirect me to various ad sites. And sometime when i'm just browsing other websites, a tab opens and a random ad site opens. All of this only on FF and not any other browser. Also, Windows updates are failing.

GMER failed to run and so i ran the scan with only Sections and C drive boxes ticked. I have attached the log files and following is DDS.txt

Thanks a Ton!

NOTE: This is a
cross-post from the SuperUser StackExchange site.  Apparently, because I'm a new user of this forum, I do not have permission yet to post links, so have removed all links I have included in the original post.  I've identified the removed links in
bold, italics, and underlined below.
I've recently started experiencing some issues with a couple of workstations on my network getting the above-mentioned errors
when trying to check for and download updates for Windows 7 (x64). Sometimes I get the 8024402F error, and sometimes I get the 80072EFE error. I've attempted to resolve the problem myself through liberal
use of Google-fu, but I've been unable to find anything yet that will allow these computers to check for updates.
Other workstations including my own do not seem to be experiencing any problems checking for, downloading, or installing updates.
The affected workstations do not appear to have any other network/Internet-related issues, as far as I can tell. The problem only seems to be with checking for Windows updates. All of the workstations on the network have the same basic configuration when it
comes to AV software scanning and security.
For now, I'm just working on one of the (apparently) three computers on my network that are having the problem because it's
a computer that isn't actively in use for production at the moment.

Yep, another thread/request involving that fricken. I clicked on an image in google and my java crashed, then Mcafee went nutty, quarantining and/or removing several PUPs and Trojans, chiefly among them, Spam-Waka and Downloader-CDN. I've scanned with everything from Mcafee to Malware Bytes to Hitman Pro 3.5 all to no avail. I even purchased Registry Mechanic from PC Tools hoping that would work but thus far, no luck. Googling some of the file names in system32 that I wanted more information on yielded many results from your website and I saw one thread that was an exact duplicate of the issue(s) I'm having. Hopefully I've done the right prep and am pasting the right logs/info and hopefully you all can help me.DDS LogDDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Kathy at 9:41:21.55 on Wed 04/14/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18904Microsoft? Hello psycoma Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. Windows 10 Files Explorer (Search App) began crashing during most file searches after the installation
of Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3149135) and other updates on 6/14/2016

By crashing, I mean after selecting a folder and typing in a word/string to search, "working on it ..." pops up
then in a few seconds, the active File Explorer Window totally disappears; the Desktop Icons disappear then slowly
re-populate; the Taskbar items were also cleared but return about 15-20 seconds later.

I cannot find a common factor for those that will/won't crash.

I ran SFC /SCANNOW and there were not validation errors.

In addition, I rebuilt the Search Index and cleared the Search history - the issue continued.

I did not have this issue the day before the update as Windows 10 has been very stable for the last 4-6 months.

Any thoughts? TIA

Dennis

Answer:Windows 10 File Explorer Search crashing after 6/14/2016 Updates

Any third party security software loaded on the machine? You can try the DISM fix. Rebuilding the search is not going to resolve this. Also roll back before that set of updates were applied. Last year it was a couple of KB's that were causing the crash behavior. This is not a wide spread issue right now, so will need to have you go step by step, working backwards. That means uninstall any third party Security software, roll back before the updates and then see if the problem goes away.

An old PC with fresh new Win7Pro64 installation and a few programs installed.
Did notice DX11 was missing (substituted old GPU with a new one) and tried to perform Win Update.
The process never give any answer, waiting for hours since a couple of days. I did fist changed the Win Update settings from automatic download to just notify.
I did try everything I find on this forum, from resetting Win Update using the bat, to following others forum suggestions such as this, upgrade to Win10, install the "SP2" win7 pack, cancelled the whole updates directory content, and also following posting instructions.
Summarizing the situation: any app I did try such as System Update Readiness Tool to Win10 update is stuck on searching for updates and the process never finish.
Win Update give an error just once after resetting it, but never again, is simply wating.
SFC scan didn't give any error.
Installing the SP2 "courtesy pack" was at the beginning impossible since Microsoft Downalod center is asking to installa a ActiveX app again and again never ending the process.
Tried also to disable any firewall, antivirus, realtime protection.
CBS folder zip is too big to be uploaded, next a link to download it.
