Dell Laptop Hard Disk Crashed -- Help needed

Question: Dell Laptop Hard Disk Crashed -- Help needed

Hi Guys,

Last week I found my Laptop was hanging/lagging as soon as i get my Desktop screen. At first i thought it should be a Virus problem, but i had latest Kaspersky Internet security software. When i ran it, laptop freezes. Booted the laptop in safe mode and tried uninstalling few memory consuming programs, still no luck.

Ran Dell memory test and found a problem with Hard disk. I had 4 partitions(c:\ is primary where OS is installed). I formatted the C:\ drive and tried re-installing Windows Vista, but it was an failure, I tried this more than 10 times in different ways.

I had second thought to connect this Hard Disk to another computer as secondary drive and to move data to other drive. So I bought a new Hard Drive and Installed vista on it and it works fine.

I bought 2.5" Hard Disk connector and connected to laptop. It showed as Mass storage device connected, but when i went to "My Computer" I could not see the any other drives except the new drive.

I went to Disk Management and found the crashed drive and it showed as "Unallocated"

I seeked help of an expert but he said it will very expensive (>3500$) which is not affordable. I need an help. I have helped many of them in this forum to resolve their issues, lemme see if someone can help me on this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you hear the old drive spin?

Often the platter with the data is fine on a crashed drive..............so you buy an identical drive..and take the board from it and put it in the old drive..if no luck then change the head.

Hi. You can't do that, sorry...laptops hard drives and Desktop's are different. Do you mean that you don't have an Operating System installed or it's not working/corrupt? What do you mean by crashed? It won't boot? Please, be more specific.

My Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop (running Windows XP Professional) stopped working at the turn of the New Year ? and I need some way to at least access what?s in it (had much backed up ? but not everything).
When it crashed, I got an error message ?Savedump.exe ? Corrupt File. The file or directory C:\WINDOWS is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdisk utility.? And a bit after that ? went to a blue screen, saying: ?A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down? A process or crucial thread to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. ? Beginning dump of physical memory.?

After that, was never able to get the computer going for more than a very few minutes before it crashed in that same way again. Someone at the Dell ?out-of-warrantee? tech support dept. suggested that it was probably a motherboard problem, but suggested that I could get full access to the crashed computer?s hard-drive if I installed it in a 2 ½ inch external enclosure, which I could then connect to my other computer (actually, my wife?s). So at CompUSA I bought a 2.5? USB 2.0 Aluminum External Enclosure and installed the old computer?s HD in it. Now on Windows Explorer it does indeed show another drive ? "Removable Disk G:" ? but when I try to see what?s on that drive I get ?Insert Disk (please insert a disk into drive G?.

Can anyone please advise me on how I can obtain a restore disk for my Dell Latitude Laptop Computer, model No CPx H450GT I have lost mine and need to replace it in case my computer crashes and I have to reinstall.

Answer:restore disk for dell laptop needed

Which Operating system? I am pretty sure you can order a replacement set from Dell themselves. You could try their support site and then put in your computers serial number. If you registered the computer when you bought it you won`t have to do this, then e-mail support and tell them the problem. There will probably be a charge but someone here may be prepared to send you a copy of the disks.I strongly recommend you download Belarc click here run it and print out the results. This will give you all the current info about your computer including software registration keys. If you do suffer a crash and have to reinstall all the keys will be recorded in case you can`t find original disks.I would also recommend you download all the updated drivers for your Dell and burn them to disk. Then you are prepared for the worst scenario. click here

My father-in-law has a Dell laptop (Inspiron 1100) that he bought in 2003 and is now out of warranty. He had used AOL ever since he first started online in 1996. He would call me frequently with problems on his laptop that usually stemmed from AOL conflicting with other stuff on the computer (e.g. the AOL Security system said his wireless card software was buggy and needed to be uninstalled). I finally told him that I refused to work with his laptop anymore if he insisted on continuing to use AOL and, to my surprise, he said that I could uninstall it. (AOL was not even his ISP anymore but he was continuing to use the AOL suite for any of his online activities.)

I took the laptop and uninstalled AOL after transferring all his email and favorites to Yahoo and Firefox respectively. I rebooted the laptop several times and surfed online using the Belkin wireless card for an hour and then shut it down and told him it was ready. The next day he came over and I turned it on and got the message "Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 Not Found." The BIOS listed "NONE" as primary hard drive.

After googling, I surmised that the HDD had died and a new one would be needed. I bought a new HDD on Ebay and it arrived yesterday and I installed it today. I continue to get the message "Primary Hard Disk Drive 0 Not Found". I have run system diagnostics and the only test that would not pass was the CDROM read test but all other tests passed.

Did I kill the laptop or is ... Read more

Answer:No Hard Drive - Dell Laptop - Help needed!

I don't think that you killed his laptop. It's been my experience with the Dell Inspiron 1100 series and 5100 series (they're almost identical) that they frequently have faulty IDE controllers. I have seen MANY hard drives get burned up for no apparent reason, and when a new drive is installed, it gets burned up too (if not right away, then in less than 48 hours). The IDE controllers tend to fail after about 3-4 years of use, and from what you posted above, that's about where this PC is. There isn't alot you can do except replace the motherboard but in the end, you'd probably be asking for more problems doing that. Just tell him the truth, and suggest that next time to buy a better laptop; either have a small, local, independent PC store custom build one, or if brand names are preferred, go with Toshiba. In my experience, Toshiba's tend to last longer, perform better, and have MANY fewer problems overall. By all means, DO NOT buy a Gateway laptop..... good luck!

Cannot load O/s as a new HD has been Installed not seen

Answer:Cannot find driver for new hard disk Dell Laptop

If the mboard's bios Setup is NOT detecting the hard drive.....Some hard drives in older laptops have a gender adapter that's plugged into the pins on the original drive that must be removed and installed on the replacement drive. That's obvious because on the new drive you can see the pins, on the old drive it doesn't look the same because of the gender adapter. If the mboard's bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive, but your problem is the computer is not detecting a bootable hard drive, new hard drives (or used hard drives that have had their data deleted) have no data on them and cannot be seen by the bios as bootable (having had an operating system installed on them). That problem will go away after you have installed Windows on the drive from the Vista DVD, or after you have installed the contents of the Recovery disks for the specific model. If the bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive but the initial files loaded from the Windows DVD, or from the Recovery disk set for your specific model, are NOT detecting it...If the drive is SATA......This is about XP - it has no SATA drive controller drivers built into it.Similar applies to Vista - it has some SATA drive controller drivers built into it, but not all possible SATA drive controller drivers. You can provide the SATA drive controller drivers to Vista on other media other than a floppy disk, such as a flash drive, or you can set the SATA drive controller mode to an IDE compatible mode in the bios. I have a dell inspirion 9100 and I just recently installed a new dvd-ram drive because the old dvd-rw died...
I have a pioneer dvr-k16 and when I boot up it stalls for like 30 seconds now and then flashes "secondary hard disk drive 0 not found". Windows starts up like normal and my drive works, although I've only watched movies so far and haven't tried burning anything. How do I get the error message to go away? I've tried going into setup and that doesn't seem to help anything because I don't know what to do in there. I keep reading on other threads that you have to change the slave to cs or something like that but I have no clue as to how to do any of that or if that would even alleviate my situation. Maybe just a dirty computer? I do have two cats and I have fur balls floating all over the place that I can't seem to get rid of...that's a whole seperate issue of course. HELP?
thanks

Answer:secondary hard disk drive 0 not found on a dell laptop what do I do?

The bios in your laptop was set up to use your old drive, the specs on your new drive will be different.

First off, have a look at the drive you took out to see if it was set to master, slave, or cable select. To do this, have a look at the back end of the drive near the connector for the jumper setting, then make sure your new drive is set the same.

Then you need to go into the bios and look for any options to scan for hard drives (this will scan for optical drives too). You need to make sure its set to your new drive and not your old one.

If you don't know how to do any of this the your manual will help, if you don't have it you can probably download one from dell.

If you still have problems then let me know and i will do my best to help further.

100 GB hard drive worked well. One day - it stopped.
"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
No bootable devices..."

No disks in BIOS are shown now

Same story couple months before that was with another 80GB harddisk.
Several files on drive C (FAT) though were corrupted (CHKDSK corrected that)

"Fun" is:
1) Harddisk works fine if placed into desktop PC, no problems with any diagnostics
2) laptop works fine with small size old 4 GB harddrive

Harddrive connector problem???? BIOS problem with nonstandard size harddisks (DELL sold this notebook only with 60 GB max). Old not supported firmware ?

Dell Customer Support after several diagnoistics by phone only suggested to buy ane more disk and check. But I afraid that most probably it will not work

Somethig similar was here (but guy does not respond)

Hi, After turning on my laptop I am getting an error message, "Internal hard disk drive not found". No bootable devices.
I've turned it off, unplugged, removed battery, unplugged/re plugged disk and rebooted but that didn't do it.
I ran the ePSA prebiotic assessment. Everything ok, EXCEPT it tells me my hard drive is not installed.

Boot list option UEFI
Secure boot enabled
Load legacy option disabled
Boot option #1 onboard NIC ( IPv6)

Anyone experiencing this and found a solution that works?

I dared tweaking the power cables at the of my CD-ROM. Now, when I turned my CPU on, there were two beeps but I didnt see what the message was because there was no available monitor at that moment so I decided to just shut the CPU off. When I turned it on again, with a monitor this time, the screen was blank. The computer tried to read the hard disk for a moment and then nothing! The red Compaq logo in white bakground did not even show up. My floppy drive and my cd-rom drive did not even scanned for bootable medias. What could have had happened? Had I crashed my hard disk, my motherboard, or had just accidentally erased a vital data somewhere?

If possible, flash the BIOS to make sure it is compatible with a newer HDD, and purchase a PATA hard drive online or in store. I personally recommend newegg for components. EDIT: Upon further inspection, it appears Lenovo has locked the list of usable HDD's. You'll need to select an HD from this list of compatible drives. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-41008, Scroll down to Supported Hard Drives and see this thread if you need further advice. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T43-Hard-Drive-Support/m-p/21890

My HP pavilion dv4t-1500 laptop with a 500GB hard disk died. I bought a new 256 GB SSD to replace it. If I order the HP recovery disks, they will most likely not work as the new hard drive size is different (as the HP forums say)

Also I have read in forums that I can use the COA product key to install a fresh copy of windows 7. However 6 characters of the product key is faded

If the recovery disks will not work, will microsoft provide me with the original COA product key so that I could do a fresh install?

I have bought an expensive SSD and I really do not want to be faced with the prospect of having to buy a new windows license!!

Hi James. In my experience this almost ceryainly a hard drive failure. A new hard drive is about £50 from Dabs (click here) or E-Buyer click here. The information you give suggests that the computer is fairly modern, so there should be no size limit to your hard drive. A good 40G drive from E-Buyer would be the Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8 at £50.66 inclusive of vat click here

There are no guarantees that you can recover all or any of the data on the drive. To try and recover the data you will need another working PC that will allow you to attach the drive you are trying to recover from as a secondary drive. You will some type of recovery software to scan the drive and attempt to recover the files. Some people have reported success with using the GetDataBack program:

Since there is no cd/dvd drive in a Dell Inspiron Duo1090, how is the OS reinstalled. Can it be done from a USB Drive? An external CD/DVD reader? Does the new drive need to be set up via USB from another computer? Does the DUO have to go back to Dell?
Thanks for information.

Answer:Dell Duo with crashed hard drive/OS install

You can install from a USB drive.

I'd guess also from an external DVD reader.

I'd seriously doubt it has to go back to Dell, but if the hard drive failed you may have a warranty claim.

If the drive did not fail, it may have a usable recovery partition on it from which the OS can be reinstalled.

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but:
I have a Dell Inspiron 13 which was bought less than 1 year ago. I used this laptop daily for internet usage and Microsoft Office, as well as stored some pictures on it. That's all. However, the hard drive, which again is less than 1 year old, began making a loud clicking noise when I would run my computer. When I ran diagnostics (prompted by the F1 key when the laptop tried and failed to start, all the while making the clicking noise) everything was fine except for the hard drive. If anyone knows why this is happening or has had a similar issue, I'm curious if there is any way to solve this issue aside from buying a new laptop, which is the only option I see as of right now. Thank you.

Answer:DELL INSPIRION 13 Hard Drive Crashed

Hard drives can fail for any of a host of reasons - excessive shock and heat are the two primary killers.  You may want to consider replacing a spinning hard drive with a solid state drive (no moving parts, so far more shock-resistant).

So my neice called me a few days ago and asked if I could stop over and chek her computer out.   When trying to start the pc she was getting a no bootable device found.  After doing the usual troubleshooting and a few unusual ones, I concluded the drive is dead.  The PC is past warrenty so I ahve ordered a new hard drive for her but there is still one small problem.  She has no backup disks.  She doesn't think it came with any disks and with a dead drive, the recovery partition is out of reach. Does HP have any options to help her out in a situation like this such as downloading or ordering the original set up files?  Another thing she is concerned about is her personal files.  Pictures, saved games, other documents.  Does anyone have any crazy tricks for recovering files from a dead disk?  I pulled it from the PC and installed it in an external enclosure and tried a couple different pc's with Windows and 1 with Linux and nothing.

Answer:Hard drive crashed and have no recovery disk

From the specifications for her notebook:HP Recovery Manager: Recover, restore, and create recovery media for, your PC.; HP Launch Box: Group key apps in the taskbar for fast launch and customize your own. It was delivered from the factory with the ability to create recovery media. Unfortunately, she did not create any or forgot to do it. HP does not provide downloadable recovery media. If the hard disk crashed, recovery solutions are usually quite specialized and expensive. The cost of professional recovery would exceed the value of her notebook from even when it was a new product in the box. Normally, I would suggest using Computersurgeons.com. Unfortunately, they do not sell recovery media for her notebook. Because the notebook is past the three-year release to market point, HP no longer sells or stocks recovery media for her notebook. If the twenty-five character license key for the operating system is still visible on the Microsoft certificate of authenticity, you may be able to use a downloadable ISO from Microsoft to reinstall Windows 7. Use the following Microsoft link.Use the following Microsoft link.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 Recovering files from a crashed disk:Take a read of the following article. There is no success guarantee. That is why I have a NAS on my home network for the three of us.http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/how-to/a3086/hard-drive-recovery/

Hello, my cousins computer with Windows XP crashed last week, it would not boot up so I took out the Hard disk drive and put it as a slave in my PC (also WinXP). I could not see any files on the bad HDD. The Properties of the bad drive said it had "0 used space" and "0 empty space". I decided to run CHKDSK on the bad drive. It said it had to restart the computer in order to run CHKDSK.
When the computer restarted CHKDSK ran and found all kinds of errors and repaired them.
When the PC booted the disk was now "healthy" and I could see all the files on the drive
When I reinstalled it in back my cousins PC, it boots up it ask for a password but my cousins password no longer works so I restarted it in safe mode and went into the Administrator account but it also ask for a password but before the admin user in safe never had a password, I used it many times.
I hooked the HDD back to my PC as a slave again. Is there a way to remove the password
or am I going to have back up all the files to another drive and reinstall WinXP.
Thanks

Answer:Hard disk crashed and now password does not work

There are utilities that can remove the administrator password. Search for "Ultimate Boot CD" (I think that is the one).

I had to replace my hard disk recently on my Compaq Deskpro machine. While the PC works fine, I need help on two issues:

1. The technician who replaced the hard disk says he's unable to read the old hard disk, so can't recover any files from it. Any way out...?

2. On reinstalling Windows 95, I'm unable to change the display settings to anything higher that 16 colors; if I try and restart, there's a message saying the settings do not work with my hardware. Now, the Hardware Wizard says my display adapter is Oaks Technologies Super VGA; however, I distinctly remember seeing a Matrox QuickDesk facility with my earlier installation. Is this possible...? Or am I missing something?

Answer:Recovering files from crashed hard disk

As far as the colors you need to reinstall your video drivers for the matrox card.

Hard disk, if it's that important you could send it to ontrack or one of the others, but it's very expensive to get data recovery.

my Dell laptop (I'll check the model) has had a CATASTROPHIC failure of all well, all everything really. When I press the power button, the screen comes on, then the login users screen comes on. After I insert my password, the screen shows the loading vista sign, and goes blank. The only screen I can get after that is the command prompt screen. Can you give me some tips or something to type into cmd? This would be a mahoosive help.

Cheers

Answer:Dell Laptop Crashed

Could always try running a chkdsk /r on it from command prompt. Or booting into the Startup Repair and doing a System Restore to a time before it started acting up.

I have purchased Toshiba laptop(C660-1CV) from a local dealer just before two days. I had loaded VMware along with couple of VMs and some other important software.

In spite of my company insisting for lenevo I had gone for Toshiba because I trust the brand and I have had real good experience with Toshiba. Today morning that is after two days of purchase of laptop the hard disk crashed and I got a black screen no OS prompt, nothing. My dealer said he cannot do anything I have to take it to Al Futtiam service center. The service center guy just re-connected the hard disk and it didn?t work, he straight away made a statement that hard disk needs to be replaced and it will another 4 to 5 days. He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay ?99 AED?. Isn?t that strange enough ??? My own laptop which is just 2 days old crashed and I have to pay for getting my data. The technical guy did not do any other troubleshooting except reconnecting the hard disk.

I want to escalate it to the right level in Toshiba. if anybody has any contacts in UAE region pass it on to me.

Answer:Satellite C660-1CV - hard disk crashed in 2 days

Hi pmavani,

I?m sorry to hear that that HDD died after 2 days that not normally but such things can happen, especially with HDD that is a mechanical part. But don?t worry this case is covered by warranty so you can get a new HDD for free from an authorized service provider and as the guy said it takes 4 or 5 days. That?s ok so the notebook can repaired within one week.

> He said for taking a back-up of your data I have to pay ?99 AED?. Isn?t that strange enough ???
No, that?s not strange enough. Warranty doesn?t cover backup, you have to do this yourself. That?s the reason why you should install and configure backup software before you do anything.

My Vista Operating System Hard Disk Just crashed. It was running Vista Home Premium. My Computer is an HP 8170in media centre PC.

I have managed to salvage most data off it from the other partitions as well as the C:\ except the my documents which has all my user files on them. I have already tried using an XP computer to get into the hard disk but it doesnt allow me to change the securities from there. Have tried changing security ownership by using articles from the forum by goin on the security tab in XP but its not allowing me to change this for the documents and settings. Is it located elsewhere by any chance? Am i changing the wrong folder? At the minute it just shows the folder grayed out with no access to it... you do not have permission message and its disk size shown is 0mb. Assuming this is becuase of a security issue.

I also bought a new hard disk and used the hp restore disks to re add windows vista on that hard disk. Now on that system i cannot access my old hard disk and i get a blue screen. If i attempt to only boot from my old hard disk i get a 0x0000007b (0x78d2524 oxc0000034 ox00000000 0x00000000) error

Please help. Me desperate now.

Answer:Recover my documents from a crashed vista OS hard disk

Documents & Settings is not a folder but a junction point pointing to the users folder.
It is the same for the My documents icon.
So from the other PC, your documents are somewhere else if you moved the location or in c:\users\yourusername\
There once you discovered the path of your files/folders, you can take ownership and transfer your files.
Next time as soon as you have installed your OS, move the location of your "Documents" folder in another partition.

See this tutorial: Clean Install Windows 7

In the above mentioned tutorial you can find for instance this information:

   Note
If you do not have a Windows 7 with SP1 installation DVD/USB, then you can download the latest official Windows 7 with SP1 ISO file here: Microsoft: Windows 7 Direct Download Links, and use Windows 7 USB-DVD Download Tool to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with the ISO to do the clean install with.

Answer:hard drive crashed. need recovery disk with windows 10

Hi, You won't need to purchase Recovery Media and then go through the process of upgrading to Windows 10 again. As long as the previous installation of Windows 10 had activated Ok after the upgrade, you can just create Windows 10 installation media on another PC and then perform a clean installation as detailed in the guide on the following link.  Note: At the activation screen, select 'I don't have a Product key' - Windows will activate automatically once the installation has completed as a hardware profile of your notebook will have been recorded by the activation servers from your previous upgrade to 10. http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/ Regards, DP-K

My T40 (2373) HDD IDE crashed on my laptop which came with preinstalled windows pro without any windows disk. I need to install a new disk. I was told at the time I bought the laptop that it will only support upto 80gb max but I see on the net and some forums that it can take upto 320gb etc now. What capacity can I install without slowing down my computer or having any other issues and how do I get my legal windows installed without paying for it. I have the key and serial #. Thanks if anyone can help.andy

Answer:Hard disk Crashed on my T40 need to upgrade from 40gb to higher

i have a 250 gig in the T40. Regarding windows installation that is more difficult, you will have to buy the discs, or source the Xp pro discs from somewhere and install it, and then download the necessary drivers from website.

3 days ago, I went to boot up my Dell XPS 8500 running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (after having booted it up and used it earlier in the day with no problem, not having recently installed any software or made any configuration changes.) The result was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. If I reset the computer, I got the Dell splash screen, but the F2 option to enter setup and the F12 option to choose boot devices did nothing--still got the black screen. I opened the case, removed and replaced the CMOS battery. This allowed me to get into BIOS. I then found that if I change the hard drive from RAID mode (what it's supposed to be, as I have a drive with an SSD cache) to AHCI, I could start to boot Windows, but after a few seconds of the "Starting Windows" screen, I would get a quick flash of a BSOD. I was able to see that the error was STOP, 7B. I was also able to get into the onboard Dell ePSA diagnostics, in which every test passed fine. I was able to boot from a Windows installation USB drive, and use the bootrec tool as many online guides describe. Hi all,

My first post here.

My hard drive crashed some time back! :| It doesn't get detected BIOS whatsoever. It's a 500 GB Seagate disk.

All I did was this:

Returned from work and switched on the desktop.

Windows seemed to boot and was stuck in the welcome screen. After a while I hard restarted my computer and well, the rest is history!! No boot..

Till last night before I shutdown the desktop, my computer has been performing just great - no crashes, no issues, no nothing basically since the day Windows 7 went RTM - yes, I grabbed a copy right on day 1 and Windows 7 has been pretty much a great OS

Here are the error screenshots I captured:

Answer:Hard disk crashed - out of the blue! Error screenshot attached

Try to use another SATA port on your motherboard and check the cables, is the HDD operating when the PC is switched on?

Hi All, Please tell me a way out. I have a Lenovo Y 500 series laptop and after about 2 years (not under warranty now) the Hard-disk crashes. How do i get the softwares and recovery partition back whcih had come pre-installed at the time i bought it. Please tell me if there's a way i can get it without much cost. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Hard disk Crashed. How to get the recovery partition and other softwares that had come pre-installed

Only Lenovo has the resources to configure your hard drive with the recovery partition and the preinstalled OS. You will have to contact Lenovo phone support and ask about this service, and unfortunately it is not a free service.

Everybody, Thought will share my experience with you all.I received the w510 on Christmas eve(ordered on the 14th) well in time for Christmas.I opened it, booted it, started creating the recovery disks and the hard disk crashed. Since then it hasn't booted.I called the support line, but they don't have any records of my laptop yet.The agent said that their systems might not have been updated, and have to call back on Monday / Tuesday. Do reply if anybody has experienced anything similar. Cheers ..

Answer:Christmas Present - w510, hard disk crashed during first bootup

Mine was deliver last Tuesday, about 10 minutes into commissioning the hard drive began to click.  That lead to HD failure later that evening. Call support and after some discussions got the next day onsite warranty we purchased activated.  Tech made it there on the 23rd and replaced drive --- working great now.

Please provide details of what it says on the blue screen because if it refers to a hardware problem a boot disc will not help. You need to post the error code (BCC code) and the error statement.

I apologize in advance if this topic is not in the right forum. I am having serious issues with my Dell Inspiron 1520 with XP 32bit Media Center Edition. I bought a Seagate 500gb/7200rpm hard drive about 6 months ago and got a message this morning saying "read failure on internal hard drive". I am pretty sure it died as I've slaved the hard drive to another computer and it's not being recognized but the motor is still going. On to my main question here.... How do I know that it's not the motherboard that has gone out? I've been having problems here lately with my quickset drivers as well as my video card drivers but I thought that problem had been resolved. I've also been infected with countless virus's and trojans as of late even though I have anti-virus programs/malware programs. I had the "google redirect" for the past month and was finally able to get it off just Saturday. My motherboard crashed about 2 years ago and was replaced under warranty. I've read that the motherboards in this particular model are crap.

I am worried about my motherboard as I put another hard drive in the computer and I just kept getting BDOSs but it was too fast for me to see an error code. This hard drive is configured for Vista 32bit and is for a different model Dell and different motherboard so I am not sure if that would make it not work.

My second question would be if I had to replace my motherboard would I have to go back with OEM ... Read more

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1520 hard drive crashed... did motherboard crash also?

There's no reason to think it's the board.
Did you make a warranty claim on the drive?
Did you install XP on the replacement drive, or just try to use it as is? A repair install may solve the problem, but a clean install would be better.

Hi All!

> couldn't reboot; tried using restore disks to install Vista from scratch but although it appeared to show a volume, it says it was unrecognized
> tried executing harddrive driver D20035-001-001.exe but it can't unzip to c:/cab as I believe c: isn't even there anyway
> tried pulling driver off of the restore disk but perhaps I didn't find the right one during the Vista install....is this my real problem?

so using diskpart (after having a CD with the harddrive driver in, D20035-001-001.exe)
> list disk only shows Disk 0
> Disk 0, status=unreadable, size=149GB,Free=149GB,Dyn is null, Gpt is null
> select disk 0
> list partition
There are no partitions on this disk to show.
> list volume
Volume 0, Ltr D, Type=DVD-ROM (only reading the cd disc)

> details
Disk Id: 00000000
Type: ATA
Bus: 0
Target: 0
LUN ID: 0
There are no volumes.

I can't create partitions/volumes. Repair doesn't work either. I also believe I can't format if it sees no partition or volume.

Is this a physical problem? They are still under 1 year warranty so is it best to just send back? Also, did video memory swapping playing Spore cause this corruption??

Thx for reviewing!

So by everyone's silence, should I assume there's nothing simple I should try and should just use the warranty??

My 1 TB hard disk (D: drive) has crashed (after only half a year of operation ....). This harddisk did have the LENOVO partition with OKR and all drivers. From my supplier I got a new hard disk, but how to get OKR (using the F2 key) working again???!! Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer:K330 - Crashed hard disk - service partition and drivers lost

As you need information regarding to use the OneKey Recovery feature in the new hard drive, I need to share with you that if you have replaced the existing hard drive in the service centre, and if  the service representative had done re-imaging the new hard drive as similar with shipped hard drive then you would able to use the OneKey Recovery feature.

If it is new then return it for repair/replace. You don't mention exactly what you mean by 'won't restart' so it's difficult to give any further advice. This laptop crashed over a month ago. I was told it needed a recovery disk since it would say it was loading windows files, and starting windows. But then it goes to an empty desktop screen and does nothing. I got the recovery disk in the mail today, I put it in and it does nothing! Anyone know what could be the problem?

Answer:Asus Laptop K53E Crashed, Recovery Disk NOT Working

Are you booting from the disc? If your laptop won't boot from it and keeps going to Windows instead, you'll have to go into your BIOS and edit the boot order so the CD/DVD drive comes first.

Hi

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

Answer:Move Dell Windows 7 Hard disk into non-dell hardware

Welcome to our forum auror1968.

Their is a excellent chance that the OEM/SLP key, drivers and a lot more are tied to the Laptop and will not work on the Desktop.
Does you Desktop or Laptop have a Windows 7 sticker on it that looks something like this?

Greetings,

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).

I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)

Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s

I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.

Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you describe...is that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.

Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

My problem with this Laptop--- As initially this laptop had window vista premium installed and was working well. In Dec-2015 , the hard drive of this laptop crashed and in remedy, the local seller of my laptop, Shakti Infoteck, changed the hard drive. Resulting which, the pre installed window vista premium OS did not work. So the seller installed in my laptop-- window 7, which is certainly not genuine OS giving me several problems like OS supported software do not run well and so many. So please help me in such a way that my original vista premium or any OS is installed on my laptop.

My laptop recently crashed on me, it will turn on but will not power up. I have tried everything to make it operate and nothing works. I have a new laptop now, but had some important files on that old pc. I was wondering if there was a way to save the files on the hard drive of the laptop that will not boot up?

HELP!

Answer:Is there a way to access files on a crashed laptop hard drive?

You can buy adaptors that connect various devices to another computer (or laptop) via the USB port. Not sure where in the world you are but if you`re in the UK, try someone like Maplin or alternatively a computer spares or gadget type shop will have them in, I`m sure.

If you`re looking at buying one primarily for this purpose, make sure you take the hard drive down with you so you get the correct one for the job.

Hi .. just wanted to know the names and details of 10 - 20 GB hard disks we used during the late nineties and early 2000. Any information of details and specifications on this is very appreciated.I think its definitely not the PATA or SATA used in the these days

I have a old Pentium III processor on 128 Mb SD RAM whose hard disk ( 10 GB ) and SMPS is not working. I got a replacement of the SMPS but can't find the 10 or 20 GB hard disks used during those days. I dont wish to dump my PC because everything else is working fine.

Please suggest something.Thanks.

Answer:Hard Disk Info needed.

I'm pretty sure an older HD is just IDE(PATA). I have an old IBM in the basement which has about a 2GB drive and I remember having hooked the HD up to a 1998 Pentium II which came with a 20gb drive and transferring data.

You can get the HD model number off the label and search for it on the web. Western Digital definitely has specifications for their legacy drives available.

****
What is the make and model of computer? We could help figure out it's specifications and what type of drive it can handle. It is a matter of figuring out if there was a BIOS update that allows it to see drives larger than 32GB.
****
What are your symptoms on the computer you are trying to boot? Is the HD recognized in BIOS?

Hello,

I have a home network set up with 2 laptops and 1 desktop all running WinXP Pro. The desktop acts as a server and shares over 100GBs of media files such as music, photos, videos, thinks of that sort towards my laptops. The hard disk is a Western Digital 200GB. Its was bought around 2004. As more and more data becomes stored on that drive, the more I become nervous. I have no back up of the drive and I seriously need to consider it. How long do these drives last? Any experiences? I would like to hear some. It would be wise to purchase a brand new Seagate or no?

Have you tried fitting a new IDE cable too? - might be well worth a go.Have you tried a different power plug into the drive - perhaps that's bad.And can you tell us a litle more about your system please. There's also the unlikely, but still slightly possible chance, that the new drive is faulty too.

My T60P 8744-C9U hard drive died.  Test: BIOS encounters read errors when doing a  test - WinXP boot cd cannot find C drive. But fortunately I did frequent backups to a USB external drive .... hum.....So - HOW DO I RESTORE THE DATA FROM THE USB EXTERNAL DRIVE THAT WAS CREATED WITH R&R onto my other computer so I can work - a desktop - Quad XP 64 - not a Lenovo product !!!

Answer:Rescue and Recovery - How do I restore data to another comptr since my laptop hard drive crashed???

You're not going to be able to do a complete restoration onto a totally different computer, but you should be able to connect your external drive to the desktop and retrieve specific files and folders.

The only way to do a complete restoration is to get a new drive for the T60, download R&R and restore from the backup, unless you burned recovery discs, then you could restore from those and then use the backup.

Hello nikeshkm, welcome to Seven Forums!

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

I currently have an Evesham Axis 1333 with a 40Gb HDD. I'm using Windows ME and the PC has a Gigabyte Tech 7VTX motherboard with AMIBIOS 062710 (from 16 Jul 2001). I want to add a bigger hard drive but have been told that I will probably need to upgrade my BIOS if I want more than 120Gb.How can I find out the maximum size HDD I can have for the components I am using? And also if a BIOS upgrade will improve this at all.Is it the BIOS that is the problem? Thanks.

Answer:Advice needed on Hard Disk upgrade

If you go for two 120Gb drives rather than one single big 'un you will not need to mess with upgrading the bios. You also gain in that if one fails you haven't lost everything as there is still one disk functioning.

What I would do...C - OS -10 GBD - My Data - downloads, email cache, created documents etc - 30GbE - for ghost images of C - 10 GBF - DVDs, CDs etc which can be run from the hdd but need not be backed up as you will always have the originals - 30GB (using something like Virtual Drive) or for ripped DVDs etc.

I've just installed a new twin fan Power supply, so I now have 2 fans in my pc, instead of the single outlet fan I used to have. I have one directly over the CPU (PIII 500 ~47 deg C) and one as an intake at the back of the PSU. I've noticed that the side of my case is getting warm (not hot) around the area my hard disks are located, but the hard disks themselves are getting quite hot.My case is quite enclosed at the front with only a few slots for air to get in down each side, but I have another space for a fan at the back. Would putting another fan in be advised/help or would it reduce the airflow (it would be directly underneath the intake fan)? Thanks Ironman.

I am trying to get my computer to boot up using only one hard drive. Currently it will only boot up
if all 3 drives are connected. I am sending a screenshot of the disk management screen so
someone with know how can diagnose why all 3 are interconnected and need each other.
I bought a stand alone drive copier to copy my hard drive to a larger drive. I would like to make the copy of the "C" drive on the 250 gb. drive shown but I think if I change something on that drive the comp. will not boot at all.
I hope that i conveyed this so that people can understand because it is somewhat confusing. My computer skill level is decent but i need assistance on this.
I would add a second drive once I clear this up.

Thanks,

Joe

Answer:dell precision 380/ win 7 / 3 hard drives all needed to boot

Because you have all three drives with a partition marked Active. Windows thinks all three are needed for boot when they're marked active. You need to mark the other two partitions on other two drives as "Inactive". Leave drive C "boot" partition as active.

I have a 6 year old Dell XPS 600 desktop that I'm having major issues with. I'm not quite 100% positive that it's hard drive yet (I'm getting constant blue screens of death despite repeated reformatting attempts, I cannot even load windows).

But, I suppose the only way to find out is to replace the hard drive? The problem is, I've never done that before. I gather it's relatively strait forward, but the first question that comes to my mind is what hard drive do I buy.

This is the only info i could get from Dell on the one in my system, which I can't make heads or tails of:
MC249Hard Drive, 160G, Native CommandQueueing, 7.2K, 8M, Lead Free SGT-PU

I am just looking for a general replacement for this one. Upgraded, of course, but I'm not looking to spend money for something excessive. Would this be a good one to order, or would you suggest something else? http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digit...XJZE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1319706047&sr=8-7

I gather that once I have physically installed the drive that it basically boils down to just going through the same motions as if I were reformatting, and that my factory reinstall discs from Dell will do the trick on the new drive?

As soon as I can get some direction here, I'm going to get one sent overnight---unless someone more knowledgeable than me has another idea?

Hello everyone,

I bought a new dell 15R SE 7520 laptop yesterday with the following configuration:

Processor : Intel Core? i7-3632QM Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.20 GHz)
Memory : 8192MB (2X4096) 1600MHZ DDR3
Hard Disk :1TB SERIAL ATA (5400RPM) + 32GB MSATA3 SSD FOR MINICARD SLOTS - PM8
Graphics : 2GB AMD RADEON HD 7730M
Operating System : Windows 8 64bit Single Language

I have my 1TB Hard disk (DISK 0) partitioned as image below:

Also the 32GB SSD (DISK 1) is shown in the above picture as the 8GB disk assigned for the hibernation and the remaining assigned for the cache purpose.

I believe that the first partition called EFI system partition is the one which includes all the dell startup options and diagnostics (F2 button at the startup). The large one of 981 GB is my only accessible partition which contains the operating system and this is obvious for everyone here for sure. The last one of 11.96 is the recovery partition which I don't need it as DELL backup and recovery software is a crap and is not working which is a common issue and they haven't solved it yet so I decided to do all my backup and recovery manually as I used to.

I will remove the operating system which is installed but dell and I will install mine so I need to make sure that I do everything in the right way because this is the first time I deal with any computer contains an SSD disk for cache purpose and honestly I don't know how is those SSD disks work.

In order to have this combination work, you have to have the BIOS set to use the Intel Smart Response Technology enabled, and once the OS is installed, you have to install the Intel Rapid Start Technology Driver.

With the Dell, the 32GB SSD was broken down into an 8GB OEM hibernation partition and the remaining space was dedicated to the caching portion. When I reloaded my OS, i simply ignored the SSD entirely and deleted the partitions on the 500GB SSD and recreated a partition on the 500GB drive in which to install Windows.

Once Windows was running, I installed the Intel Rapid Storage software (iRST). I went in and clicked on the SSD and choose to "Enable" acceleration. That was all there was to it.

at the moment the asus offers a 2 year warranty , however the dell is an extra $456 dollars for the same.

looking at the above specs can anyone please give me their preference as I appear to be going around in circles.

Looking at the above only, obviously the Asus is cheaper and faster, and therefore better.

Before agreeing to the deal though, I'd say to them, put 4Gig of Ram in it and I'll take it :grinthumb

I own a Satellite L300 and have to replace the hard disk drive. I am in Korea and went to the service center, but they only couldn't replace the disk drive because they only had them in Korean, so I have to go elsewhere to get one in English (that's what I think I was told anyway) I don't know a whole lot about computers, so I am looking for some help.

When I bought my computer it came with Vista pre installed, therefore I don't have an installation disk or anything like that. Because I am getting a new hard disk drive, will I also need to buy Vista and install it myself?

Answer:Satellite L300 - New hard disk drive info needed

Hello my friend

I am a little bit confused after reading your posting. HDD replacement is so simply and can be done by everyone and I don't understand how the service couldn?t be able to do this. for this action you need 10 minutes and can be done without manuals or some maintenance manuals.

If you want to do this alone, please follow these steps:
- turn notebook upside down
- remove the battery
- near the battery you will see HDD cover fixed with two screws
- remove the screws and HDD cover
- remove the HDD pack by pulling on the tab attached to the pack, following the direction of the arrows
- place the HDD pack on a flat surface (such as a desk), and remove the two black flat head screws with black head screws
Please be careful with HDDs and do not apply pressure to the top or bottom of the drive.

Vista OS
New Toshiba notebooks are delivered without installations disc but recovery image is saved on HDD. When you start notebook for the first time you will see Toshiba reminder with info that you must create such disc alone using preinstalled ?Toshiba recovery disc creator?. if you didn't create it and now the HDD is defective you have a problem. Either you must order new recovery media from Toshiba or you can use Microsoft installations disc to install Vista.

If I?ve forgot something please let me know.

I bought a f500 series Compaq laptop... ok, It's originally with VISTA but the previous owner installed Windows 7 Ultimate in it. Runs ok and everything but I want my lappy to be in its original state. OK... here's the problem I spent HOURS and hours trying to solve without success...
I can't boot my Laptop from USB, CD-ROM, USB FLASH DRIVE nor External disk drive. I checked BIOS. I set the boot order like I'm supposed to, DISK > USB > HDD. Nothing happens.
I hit f10 for BIOS setup... or ESC for Boot order and I only see Hard Drive as boot option. No CD, USB... I tried to "repair computer" (F8) and I get no repair option, only restore option with restore points.
I have use Partition manager to check partitions. I am unable to install RECOVERY MANAGER. I get missing "HardDisk.dll" or when I install hdd.dll, I get error code that Recovery Manager is unable to run.
I have recovery Disks for both VISTA X 64 and WIN 7 X 64 and both are no use since I can't access those.

I tried to upgrade my BIOS F1.71 >>> Running the BIOS upgrade software I got from HP official site... I get to the point where the Software tells me it is creating a FLASH BIOS and I get immediately the blue screen with "memory dump" message. This happens every time I try to upgrade.

I'm not too knowledgeable in computers but I can troubleshoot easily with good instructions... I've tried everything and I come across with a problem after a problem. It's so frustrat... Read more

Answer:Unable to boot my laptop from DISK, USB, ANYTHING but Hard [email protected]#%

There has to be a setting in the BIOS that is stopping you from booting from the USB or CD/DVD drive. That is IF those to thing actually work.

Have you checked to see if the USB and CD/DVD drive work?

As to the memory dump when trying to update the BIOS. You are doing this from inside Windows? I would suspect that because of the memory dump error.

99% of the time the computer/OS BSODs from memory errors. Memory errors come from bad memory.
If the notebook has 2 sticks of memory remove one of them then try the BIOS update. If it still BSODs put that stick back in and remove the other.
If it still BSODs then try it from a Safe Mode boot or from a Command line boot.

I have a Dell Latitude notebook. In the lower right hand corner it shows a plug that indicates that the notebook is plugged into the wall directly. However, now and then a lightning bolt will appear over it indicating that I am on battery If I shake the cord sometimes the bolt will go away and sometimes will not. Does this indicate I need a new battery, i.e. that it no longer can hold a charge or do I need a new AC cord?

Thanks
Nancy

Answer:Dell Laptop New battery or cord needed??

Hello,

Check your AC adapter connector on the laptop to see if it is loose. Plug the AC adapter into the laptop and where the connector goes into the laptop see if you can move it around and how much play it has. It sounds like a typical problem that I see all the time on laptops in our shop.

If that is the case, then you will have to have the laptop serviced to fix the problem.

I hope this helps a little.

The printer should be able to cover various formats that fit certain templates like sticker labels
An example would be to print on multi labels on a single page.
I imagine there are  decent affordable used models out there.
Model number suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you

Please advise,
I installed a HGST 500 gb hard drive on my Dell E6410 Latitude Laptop.
But it says:
No Boot device found! Can't go to BIOS either!
Re installed the original and it works fine!
Wish to know whether the HGST is compatible with Dell Latitude.
THank you.

Answer:HGST Laptop hard drivesvs Dell E6410 Hard drives.

It won't boot until you install an operating system (windows) on it. however you should be able to get to BIOS.
