When Starting Computer, Windows Vista downloads Halfway and Stops...

Question: When Starting Computer, Windows Vista downloads Halfway and Stops...

My computer is a laptop Toshiba computer. I was working as normal and I do remember I disconnected my USB for my mouse before trying to shut down the computer. I went to the start button to log off as I normally do, and the start window totally froze and would not let me log off as normal. I became suspicious that this may be a virus attack so I shut down immediately. So I tried to reboot, but I have been totally unsuccessful.
As I try to restart the computer, it gives me the option to "repair" and I have tried to do that, but the "windows loading files" bar that appears loads about halfway, then it comes to a total halt. I'm given an unexpected I/O error and the letters are "OXC00000e9"
The next window that appears says "Windows encountered a problem communicating with the device connected to your computer (Which currently I do not have anything connected) caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as external USB drive while device in use or by faulty hardware such as hard drive or CD ROM drive that is failing." At the top of this message the page reads "Windows Boot Manager"
I have tried to reboot using F7 but no help, I tried safe mode and safe mode with networking.
I don't have reboot disks.
Is there anyone that can please help me?
I would gladly pay if you can direct me on how to resolve this or what I can do to rescue my files.

Preferred Solution: When Starting Computer, Windows Vista downloads Halfway and Stops...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I changed the SID (Security Identifier) on my computer, and now it won't start! It comes up with the blue screen and it says "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION". It goes into this strange, low-resolution system repair wizard thing that does nothing except tell me it can't do anything and let me try to do a system restore, which also fails (I set one up right before changing the SID just in case, but I tried another one as well). I don't mind reinstalling 7, but is there any way to copy my files to my external hard drive first? I don't want to lose all of my music!
Please help!!!!!!!
EDIT: I thought I'd mention that I have my original SID on my external hard drive.

Answer:[SOLVED] SID change stops my computer from starting [Windows 7, but please read!]

Well, not exactly solved, but I don't need help anymore; I just used a LiveUSB of Ubuntu to copy my music and such to an external hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7. Good enough for me (I kind of wanted to start fresh anyway). :)

I've noticed a strange issue with Vista 64 in that I can be downloading a file and then inexplicably it will stop and not resume. At first I thought it was just my connection, but it turned out that both IE and FF are acting the same way regardless of the website. If I did the same download on another machine using XP or 2K, it would download from start to finish. On this very same machine, in XP, downloads have no issue, but as soon as I'm in Vista, I will have a hard time doing a large file download...

anyone else notice this issue?

After trying to download something, I can get maybe 10-50% done with very excellent download speeds. Then, the downloads just completely stop for no reason. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Answer:Downloads stop working halfway

Many things, what version of firefox are you using, can you pause then resume the download to get it going again?

What is it you're downloading? it could be the server cutting you off

2 ideas:
1) upgrade to firefox 3 beta 5 [if not already on 3b5] then if they stop working pause and resume them or stop then start them (firefox 3b5 enables you to close firefox and re-open it whilst downloading [and the download resumes])
2) use a download manager add-on for firefox (e.g. downthemall)

Cheers,
Jamey

Dr. Moriarty just got done helping me with my PC, and I figured I would tackle my wife's machine.

I started by running RogueKiller as per the initial instructions. About halfway through it just stops. I let it sit there for two hours and it would not get past C:\Windows\System32\drivers\nvstor.sys

I tried it three times, letting it pause at the same spot for at least an hour each time. I have used RogueKiller many times and have never had a problem with it. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's a 32bit machine (I checked to make sure I was using the 32 bit version) running Windows 7. I have disabled my antivirus and made sure UAC was turned off.

Just run it in safe mode and if that fails, just skip that step.

I started noticing that all my Google searches were taking me to totally different places two days ago. Before that it was just getting slower and slower. My boys play on Roblox a lot. They also, unbeknownst to me, like to search for video game cheats. Then when I tried opening MS Word or Excel it gave me a EULA agreement to use the program. These are licensed programs!

So I came here and read everything I could about what to do thinking I could fix this without bothering anybody. Ha! Yeah, I know, silly end user.

I read about Dr. Web's CureItAll program and saved that to my desktop. I restarted my laptop (Compaq Presario C700, 32 bit, Vista) in safe mode and then ran the Dr. Web program.

The first express scan and it found three Trojans, one of them was named ernel32.dll. Then when it was finished I unchecked the "Heuristic analysis" and did the complete scan. The first three hours it ran pretty quickly, I checked it about 8'ish last night. It wasn't done so I went to bed about 12. When I woke in the morning (3am) it was still running, sort of. I sat and watched it and it looked like it had totally stopped. I read that it would take a long time but really? Oh, the topic I was reading is topic 331775 if that helps at all.

I closed everything, restarted the computer, and redid the scan. Same thing, it would do the easy scan quickly and then get hung up on the complete scan.
So, then, I went and found rkill and tried running that. It would... Read more

Are you running a sata drive?

If so, you may need to install the sata drivers during the install process; there will be a prompt to install 3rd party drivers (or something to that affect) at the bottom of the screen. You'll be prompted to hit the F6 key. If your pc doesn't have a floopy drive, you'll need a work-around: Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy (F6)

Having just purchased the Canon I850 Bubblejet printer (on the 'recommendation' of PC Advisor!) I must say I am delighted with the performance.I have been trying to print out several pages of colour photos and after printing 2 or 3 pages with no problems it then stops halfway down the page with the message 'Invalid access to memory location'Anyone have any ideas please?I have downloaded the latest driver fron Canons website but not yet installed it

Answer:Canon I850 - Stops printing halfway down a page

NB: we have already mentioned the problem we found in our earlier tests on the S520 and S750 where there were sometimes quite lengthy pauses in printing at mid-page which could double the speed otherwise expected. This is also true of the i850, but we discovered the reason for it. The printers are deliberately bridled to prevent the ink from flowing from one page to the next. This function can be deactivated via the driver in Windows 98 and earlier. In Windows XP, you have to go to Settings/ Printers. In the Device Properties, click on the Maintenance tab, then Custom Settings and uncheck "Set printer to ECP mode." The printer will then run at top speed. This is how we tested the i850.

Hi,
My PC was fine up to last night and I've not installed anything recently apart from an updated AVG 2013 a few days ago.
Today, it starts booting up until it gets to the autoexec bit (setting the path, etc) and doesn't proceed.
The mouse seems to work but nothing actually does anything.
I went into safe mode and updated & ran Spybot S&D, Super Antispyware and MalWareByte Anti-Malware but nothing showed up apart from a few tracking cookies. I also tried running a full AVG scan which kept giving me Error 0xe0010058.
Any suggestions? Any ideas? Please!!??

Hello, I want to do a disk cleanup but I every time I try to scan it, the Disk Cleanup stops halfway at system error memory dump files. I've waited for like 40 minutes but it stays there. I don't know if I should wait longer or if something is up and I need to fix it.

It also freezes if I've waited for awhile, but I'm assuming is because I had the browser on while doing the disk cleanup.

I am running Windows XP Pro on an ASUS P5GDC-Deluxe board with Intel 3.0Ghz processor and 2Mhz Ocz memory.
My system is configured RAID1 using the onboard ITE 8212F controller and 2 Maxtor 160Gb Parallel ATA drives.

It all began when Scandisk began finding more and more problems with my HDD on bootup and tried to correct them. When I looked into it only Drive 0 was affected.

In trying to fix this I tried to rebuild the RAID but ended up by mistake, copying the bad drive to the good one.

I then tried to use Checkdisk and when that didn't work I tried to let Windows Repair it.

Bad moves!
Things just went from bad to worse.

Now the computer won't boot. It gets through the POST and takes me to the SAFE MODE Boot options.
No matter which choice I select It goes to the next screen and just HANGS.
The windows logo appears - then I get an all blue screen with the mouse pointer in the center (mouse non functional). There are no messages or error numbers.

When going through the POST it recognizes both drives as part of the RAID setup and labels them Drive 0 and Drive 2.
But, when I go into the RAID Setup Utility there are NO raid arrays defined.

What do I do from here?
Should I build a new Raid array?

How do I get this computer back without losing data?

Have a Seagate SATA drive in a HP laptop that I have wiped and reformatted.  I boot up with an XP system disc which loads all the drivers, etc but when it gets to the point of starting up the Windows (when it asks which partition to load into) it crashes to a blue screen which says there is a problem with the hard drive or a virus.  I have tested the hard drive using Seatools + some Hiren testing tools and all say it is good.  Have run a Memtest + another memory diagnostic which all came back clear.  Any suggestions as to what might be the problem or what I can test next?

Okay so recently I did a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 on a SSD, and I have (more like had) a Creative X-Fi Titanium. It was working fine until I decided to install my old copy of FL Studio 10. I went into the Audio settings and set FL Studio to use Creative ASIO, at which point my whole PC locked up for a good 30 seconds. Afterwards, my sound didn't work at all. I decided to restart my PC to possibly solve the issue, and when it restarted and got to "Starting Windows", it just froze there. I waited a good 2-3 minutes (it usually takes less than 3 seconds) and nothing happened, so I did a hard shutdown and restart and it still wouldn't move. I took the sound card out and used onboard audio and Windows started fine. So I turned off, put the card back in, and then had the same issue. What happened?!

TL;DR: Set FL Studio to use Creative ASIO on my X-Fi Titanium and that screwed up my sound and prevented Windows from starting after a restart.

Answer:Sound Card stops Windows from starting

I have a studio using Sonar X3. I had an Xfi Titanium (the one with the separate front I/O console) and it caused conflicts within Sonar with my recording interface unit (a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 at the time). I had to uninstall the SoundBlaster sound card and use my on-board that did not have an ASIO driver for my regular PC audio. (I now have a Roland Octa-Capture for my recording interface unit).

Do you have the on-board audio disabled in the BIOS when you are trying to use the SoundBlaster? If not, give that a try.

You could also try a startup repair, with the SoundBlaster installed and see if that helps. Here is how to run startup repair from Microsoft CLICK ME

This is consistent since the last 2 weeks ... i cant think of anything I might have changed or installed that would be causing this.

Basically from the time Windows starts up (ie all the startup programs finish loading) I have 10 mins or less to browse the net, then all my web browsing comes to a sudden halt, both in IE and netscape.

However, even though my web browsing is not working, all my chat programs (msn, eyeballchat, yahoo) and email still work just fine.

I'm using Win98SE and connecting to the net via ethernet and Netgear Firewall/Router and Adsl modem.

Any ideas on what might be going on?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide...and yes I did try turning it off and then turning it back on.

Running a laptop..Dell Latitude D520...the hard drive failed and was replaced with a similar one. Windows was installed with accompanying drivers and ran fine for several months. I am not aware of any changes to the system but it now will not boot all the way through.

If I run it normal the bars freeze on the Windows screen and running in safe mode it freezes at Mup.sys driver. I also tried repairing with XP reinstall CD and it will boot and run the CD but stalls at "Setup is Starting WIndows" screen. I let it sit for several hours on the screen and it never changed.

I ran diagnostics and everything passed. I am not getting any error codes.

If you have any suggestions of can help in any way I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hello all,
I hope I am not violating any rules but I just want this get fixed. I have tried everything so far what I have found on the web. The machine is running under Windows 7 64bit.
The laptop is of a friend of mine. He said that it wont boot so I thought let me check it out.

The case:
after some start up repair, it can boot normally, then sometimes it wont. I did a clean install, same problem. I checked the list disk and see that it has 2 Disks. Disk 0 and Disk 1. Disk 0 is where the partitions System Reserve, Windows and another for data. Disk 1 however, it says No media, Removable Disk.

The thing is, when you start it up it will get stuck at the Windows Starting boot screen for a good while and then restarts itself to the repair startup (Recommended) and the Start Windows Normally. Then I have to do Start up repair and sometimes after doing that it starts up normal.

What I tried is in Disk 0, I put the Windows Part Active and the System Reserve Inactive and then did the Start up Repair 3 times. After that it start up normal but the moment I Shutdown and start up again, boom. Same problem.
Then last thing I tried is to remove the startup of the USB from the boot. I disabled it from the registry. Still nothing changed, same story, stuck at windows screen.

Everytime I have to do Startup repair to let it start up.

What I think is maybe this Removable Disk is causing the loop. Or maybe I am wrong or did something NOT good.

I am sorry but I have tried to explain it. ... Read more

possibly: sound card, new internal dvd-rw's or another internal hdd

anyway, i do a few things on my pc: myspace, music, gaming and some picture/video editing etc. i don't need to be tip top of the damn line when it comes to computers, but i think these essentials will suffice for the next 1.5-2 years:

Hi, I'm having a problem booting my computer up. I'm computer literate, but the stuff that goes on behind the scenes are a mystery to me.

I have an Everex eXplorer RS2800 with Windows XP Home Edition.

It starts out fine, shows a grey 'Everex' screen, then goes to the black screen with white text. It runs through the normal procedure, "Verifying DMI Pool Data ............", "Boot from CD :" and then "[RCV_MBR]Press F10/R to recovery system ..." and then it stops dead with the cursor flashing on the line below. At this point pressing F10 does nothing. I left the computer like this and waited--once for over 8 hours. Nothing changed.

If I reboot, holding F10 before the last line comes up, it takes me to the recovery system, which works through a few things and then gives me an error message:

ok, so i i was using my computer the other day, watching a movie on windows media player. it was running really slow, so i brought up the task manager to see what all was running. it showed explorer.exe running at 103,000 kb along and 3-5(i don't remember exactly) svhost.exe at about 20,000 or so. i tried to restart it to see if it was simply an errant program, but now it will not start. it gets to halfway through the XP (i run XP Pro) startup and then clicks off and restarts. it returns to the safe mode menu, but even if you start it in safe mode it does the same thing, getting halfway through and then restarting again. the only thing that i've done recently to it is i tried to install some codecs for dvd stuff (xp_codec_pack_2.39) but it conflicted wmp such that it wouldn't run so i uninstalled them. i don't think there was a virus or anything in it cause i installed it on another computer just before mine and it still works fine. the movie was unviral cause it was my bud's and he had no problems. its not connected to the internet so its nothing through there and it has mcaffee either way. please help me as i've only had the computer for 9 months and i really don't want to have to get another! thanks

Hi. So, recently I was having problems with browsing through folders in My Computer, as well as browsing to attach files in programs such as Skype or different email clients. Whatever program I was in would freeze, and crash. Windows Explorer would do the same. However, I posted a HijackThis log in the proper forum, and did a whole bunch of scans and updates, and my system turned up clean for any viruses or malware. I updated my Vista to the Service Pack 2, and that seemed to fix my attaching files in programs problem, but I still am unable to browse my files by going to Start > My Computer. I was wondering what might have caused this problem, and what I might be able to do to fix it. Here is a link to my previous thread where I was directed to come here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/287364/infected-with-something-not-quite-sure/If anyone could help, you would be awesome. This has been happening for at least two months, and I don't really recall if I made any major changes that might have caused this, but I doubt it. If I need to clarify anything, just tell me. Thanks!

That fixed my problem post back and tell me if it worked.

Hi!

I posted this a few hours ago but in the wrong sub forum. Here I am at it again, hopefully in the right section and with a few more details.

I updated to my latest GPU driver and my computer crashed halfway through. After that it won't boot. I can see the Windows logo for a few seconds after the animation is done, but after that the computer restarts and Windows says that I should run the repair tool. This has happened before when I updated my GPU driver(Nvidia GeForce version 344.11, release date 2014 Sep 18, if that matters) and Windows repair tool fixed it that time. But this time I'm out of luck.

I've been looking around on the internet but haven't found a solution. Windows repair says that the root cause is error code 0x490. The solutions I've found didn't help(set disk to active in Diskpart and various bootrec/bootsec attempts). I thought I had a restore point to restore to but the repair tool says I don't, so that isn't an option.

DISKPART says that "Boot disk = 0". It also looks like the boot manager somehow disappeared since Windows can't find any disk with Windows installed on it(according to bootrec/bootsec).

I can access the command prompt via a boot-CD and via Windows built-in repair tool. If I need to run some other commands to either output more info for you to trouble shoot on, or fix via the prompt(which I believe and hope is possible), I'm all up for it. Just let me know what to do.

Regard,
Marcus

Answer:Computer crashed halfway through GPU drivers update. Now it won't boot

Marcus, do you have a built in GPU on your Motherboard?
You can try disconnecting your current GPU and connecting your monitor to the built in one.
Maybe this will prevent the system trying to use the driver.

BTW, did you try also booting into windows in safe mode?

I just put together my PC, 'new pc' in my spec list. I turned it on with only the IDE harddrive and put in the win vista disc. It got to the point of completion, and restarted my computer. It got to the loading bar on the screen and about 2 'revolutions' of the bar through, it stopped, a blue screen that had an error came up for less than a second and then it shut down. At first i thought this was overheating, so I put a box fan next to the open case and turned all fans to maximum. I turned it on, same thing. Next thing I tried is loosing ram timings from 4 4 4 12 to 6 6 6 18, nothing helped. Ive gotten it to post at the blue screen. I really have no clue what is wrong and I seek you to help me, I appreciate every letter of every word you help me with. I will answer any questions pertaining to this, thank you for your time.

I've just started experiencing a problem with downloads lately. This has been covered in other posts but no answer.

The problem started yesterday with my downloads. I try to download something from www.nationalcountdownshow.com (One of their radio shows) and the download stopped at approximately 10meg of the 136meg file. Thought it was their site so I went to another site (4shared.com to download a large file there) and the same thing happened this time it stopped at 20meg of 150 meg file. Thought then that it was my browser. Tried IE, FIREFOX and Chrome at both sites with no avail. Tried a download manager (DownThemAll!) and the problem persists.

Thought then that maybe a virus got in. Cleaned the drive first with CCLeaner then did a scan with SUPERAnitspyware and Malwarebyts Anit-Malware. Still no resolve.

Tried rebooting the computer and still same problem persists. Small files work fine but large files just stop and do nothing.

I'm currently using Windows XP with all latest updates. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Jason

Hello all, i just moved to a a new place, there are 5 people sharing this place (not sure what it's called in english).

Ever since i set my desktop up here i've been having an issue downloading .. anything. I can download torrents just fine, without issues. However - when there's a launcher or anything like it (Ex: Video game launchers/downloads) my downloads will stop randomly, by that i mean the download speed will completely drop after about 3-10 seconds, sometimes i get lucky and the download keeps going for a couple of minutes, making it completely random. This also happens in my internet browser(s). I am at the end of my wits when it comes to this.

I'm particularly good at networking thus i come here, i am good at following directions.

In detail, this is what happens: I press download, it starts downloading, after a couple of seconds the download will completely stop progressing and the timer keeps going up until it just tells me to wait for an eternity. This issue does NOT occur when i'm downloading torrents but does happen whenever i try downloading games or anything large from my browser. The downloads ALWAYS work in the beginning but after a while they'll just die (unless i'm torrenting).

I have no issues streaming streams or watching youtube or anything like that.

I live with 5 other people, as stated above. I'm not sure that has any impact on this issue.

I literally reinstalled my windows 10 minutes ago, which did not work. Which should eliminate the p... Read more

Well, Im addicted to Azureus and fan subbed anime. So, Im always downloading and uploading a lot.

My problem is that after a while ( a few hours ) of solid downloading/uploading, the internet will completely cease to work on this computer. I have to reboot it. The other computer that is on the same router, still gets onto the net fine.

I have a Intel Pro 1000 CT integrated network card on my Abit IC7-G with the newest drivers. Is there something I can configure differently to prevent this from happening? I hate leaving downloads/uploads over night to find that 3 hours into them, they just quit working.

Over the last 12 hours, I've noticed that when I start up my laptop, about 30 to 60 minutes later it will suddenly freeze and I can't move the mouse cursor or anything, forcing me to shut down the computer by pressing the power button.

I checked online and at first I thought it might be a hardware issue, but when running Vista in Safe Mode, the problem disappears. Some of the things I've tried include running a Malware program, doing a system restore, but the problem persists.

Windows 7, after "Starting Windows" stops with a black screen and mouse cursor.

1. I turned on my desktop PC after more than 3 weeks of non use, it was in its package/box. It booted nicely to the desktop but suddenly showed a BSOD and turned off. I turned it on again and it showed a message saying the processor is overheated, so I turned it off, removed the processor to check if there's enough thermal compound. Thermal compound was OK, but the processor was a bit shaky, not well fitted, so I replaced the processor correctly and then powered it on.

2. It detected the change I made and asked what system settings it should load, I chose the default CPU settings, in a haste. I didn't read that message well, unfortunately. It showed the error message that Windows wasn't shutdown properly, I chose to load Windows normally. Chkdsk did a disk check, disk passed and it started "Replacing invalid security ID with default security ID". It then started booting; "Starting Windows" and the next screen was just a blank/black screen with the mouse cursor. It's stopped here for hours. I searched for solutions online and tried almost everything I could think of; Repair with Windows installer, bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, marking the disk active, etc. No success! I cannot boot in any mode!

3. In an attempt to copy my files off the disk, I tried Ubuntu and even installed a new Windows 7 on an unallocated partition on the same disk. The disk was not... Read more

Hi!

My computer (Windows 7) has been running incredibly slowly lately. I ran Malwarebytes on it; nothing was found. I then ran ESET scanner on it twice, and both times about 40-50% through it was terminated suddenly by Windows with a worm found in the threats list. The threat itself was not deleted upon termination. I think it was a Win32 file that was infected... I'd appreciate any help that you can offer.

Thank you!

Hi guys. So for a while now, my downloads have been randomly stopping, sometimes they resume and sometimes they don't. I noticed it when I was downloading an Nvidia driver. First time it stopped after about 5 seconds. Second time it stopped about 30 seconds in, right before it completed. Took me numerous attempts to download. Eventually I just left it and it resumed about 20 minutes later. I have contacted my ISP and there are no issues, I have fiber pro unlimited. I tried turning off my firewall. Eventually I formatted my SSD and done a clean install of Windows 7 as I had a few driver conflicts and playback issues. It sorted everything, except my downloads were still stopping. I am currently reinstalling battlefield 4 through Origin and it's stopped and started I don't know how many times. Any ideas what would be causing this and how I can get it resolved? Hi and welcome to 7F. It could be something to do with your AVG Internet Security. Is it a paid version or the free one. If the free one try to uninstall it and use Microsoft Security Essentials to see if it works then or see if you can find if AVG is blocking Chrome. Does the same happen on Firefox

Hello all,

I am having an ongoing problem with Internet Explorer. The problem only occurs with Internet Explorer 8; IE 9 seems to be OK about 90% of the time, but a similar problem occurs in IE9 from time to time as well. And, on my XP machines, since IE 8 is the last available version, this is a problem there as well.

When a download starts that uses IE, the download appears to begin (I'm asked where to save the file), and then the dialog appears, but stalls. The attached screenshot shows what this looks like. There is a little bit of progress in the progress bar, but the speed, amount and percent indications never appear.

If I let the window sit long enough, it eventually fails with a "timed out" error.

This seems to only happen from major large sites (the example shown was from the youTube Downloader, which insists on using IE as its download engine). Downloading Microsoft updates manually, for example, fails. As does Winamp, etc. any programs that are hosted on Akamai-type sites. Downloading from smaller sites seems to work fine, as does downloading from anything on the LAN.

Also, to make this problem more confusing, it is *only* IE that exhibits this problem. Chrome, Firefox and Safari never do anything like this.

My network is running on a Linux-based NAT router, with a very straightforward configuration and no unusual network setups.

This problem has proved hard to search for, as it's hard to describe in short order. I've found posts discussin... Read more

Hello

So I've been having this problem for over a month now. For many files that I try to download, they either don't start downloading or they stall at 99%

Torrent downloads work fine, even random files also download properly. When I try to download a large file either normally or using a download manager, it would download for like 800-900 mb and stop just when it has about a few kbs or about a couple of Mbs left to go.

I have tried downloading in Safe Mode with Networking and even on different computers, but they all have the same problem.

What could be going wrong here?

Please advise

Thanks

Hello,

I've been recently noticing that when im downloading a file larger than 10MB, the download will stop, and the action light of my wireless adapter stops flashing. after a few minutes it'll come back on but sometimes it never does. I've already reformatted the computer and I'm still getting the same thing. I share the connection with my brother, and some people in the neighbourhood are probably stealing it. I don't know if that would contribute to the problem but does anyone know why this is happening?

I have been having problems downloading either files or email attachments that were fairly large, say 4 mb or larger. I'm running XP, have 500 meg of memory, etc. Everything has been working fine except when I try to download any large file, the download would just quit about 1/2 way through. The computer wouldn't freeze, the download would just quit. On a hunch, I removed my Ativa router. Bam, problem solved. I just downloaded a 65 mb file with no problem. Other than buying a Linksys router does anyone have a suggested solution? Appreciate any help.

Hello Major Geekers !!

I am hoping one of you may be able to help me for the sake of my own sanity , as this problem is driving me literally NUTS !! :banghead

Background Info -

I dont usually use "Vista" and on my own "trusty old Pc" ( TOP) i use xp with no problems ,The TOP is away having an upgrade at the moment , so i am using a friends spare laptop. She did mention she had some "software problems" on it and i said i would take a look and install and run new antivirus and clean -up progs for her.

Ive used Vista before , but i find it very frustrating as every single goddamn action i try to perform triggers a "warning" pop up - " confirm you want to do this " ect - ( Arghh!! How patronising and annoying!! ) It slows the whole system down and its just inconvient and annoying when you are quickly trying to get tasks done! Basically , im fine with using Vista but i prefer not to as it annoys the hell out of me.

I am logged in on my friends "administrator" account , and ive tried changing settings so i DONT get the dammed "warning/are you sure you want to do this action/confirm action" messages every two minutes , to no avail ! If anyone knows a workaround to switch off those accursed pop-ups , then your please share the wisdom for the sake of my sanity! :tas

Answer:windows vista blocking all EXE downloads from the net

It might be some sort of virus. It seems unlikely that Vista itself would block downloading exes.

But that aside, try rebooting and hitting the F8 key repeatedly to get the Advanced Startup/Safe mode menu and see if you can boot into Safe Mode.

Try to uninstall AVG from there. Then try to download the AVG uninstaller in Safe Mode and see if it is flagged as a threat. If it downloads run it to completely get rid of AVG.

See if normal mode still blocks exes.

The problem I'm having is that when i download absolutely anything from the internet (applications , music etc) the download dialogue box appears and downloads the data then the copy phase will try to copy from the temp folder to the destination folder ( I always use the desktop for this). Then for no reason the file appears briefly and then disappears never to be seen again. When I run a search for the item it can't be found in any folder or directory and it appears to have been deleted . my system has windows vista home premium OEM as an O/S , AVG internet security as anti-virus and firewall with Spybot search & destroy for malware.
I have never had viruses , malware or any sort of problem in that dept. as i'm savvy to the internet and the threats involved with being online. I use internet explorer 7 and firefox as browsers and the same problem exists with both , but if i run the program as admin the problem seems to be intermittent , I'm not convinced that running any browser as admin is the safest way to browse . Can anyone shed any light on this annoying problem?

Brian.

First, I'm running Windows7 64 bit. So whenever I download a decently sized file; my download will start and get good speed for a few minutes, then it will drop off and stop and my connection to the internet will be lost for a short time while the connection resets. This happens if I'm using a program like Steam to download a game, torrenting something, sometimes on my Xbox 360 when it needs to update itself or a game, occasionally on a large app or album off of iTunes or patching an online game.

However, I have no issue watching YouTube videos or playing an online game while also having TeamSpeak running in the backround to chat. I don't lose connection when browsing the internet at all and recently I was able to stream a live event without issue but I only tried that once (I don't have Netflix or anything similar).

It usally isn't a big issue because my download will pick up where it left off most of the time but its a pain in the butt to have to add on an extra hour to a download sometimes for this. Any suggestions would be nice.

Answer:windows 7 halfway installeD?

Put the install disc in the drive.

Reboot and enter the bios. Set your bios to boot from the DVD drive first. Save changes and exit the bios.

You should drop into the install again. Do a fresh install at that point.

Answer:Laptop stops while starting.Need help !!!

Sounds like either the Power supply is duff, or, and more likely, that the CMOS battery needs changing - that laptop is quite old!On this laptop, changing the CMOS battery is Not straightforward, but should be easy enough if you can download a Service manual.

I have an Inspiron 9400; T2300 2GB RAM; I am running Windows XP PRO; three weeks ago my onboard SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A, (DVD/CD-ROM) stopped working properly. When I insert a CD or a DVD it will start spinning...stop; start again...stop over and over about five or six times then it just stops. I have tried opening it from "my computer" and any thing else I can think of...Does anyone have any solutions for me? Please? I don't know what else to do...(I am afraid to wipe my system and start over because the CD's will not work now why would they work if I wiped my system?)
:cry

Answer:DVD Drive tries starting then stops over and over again...

When you open Windows Explorer do you see the title of the CD or DVD that is in the drive? If so. click on the + sign in front of it. Can you see the files that are on the CD or the DVD?

Helo everyone. Im not new at this and this isnt my first build. I do have a crazy prob. though. If i try to start my comp. with any usb pluged in it will go through the boot process and then and right when windows is supose to take over. Now if i wait till its completly booted up i can plug any usb in and they work fine. Another thing. I have a pci usb controller. I can plug any usb into it and the systemboots fine.

I have gone through every bios setting out there. I disabled legacy usb suport down to not stopping on any haults. Ive tried to disable the onboard keyboard and mouse for usb. Nothing works!!!! Ive even gone into safe mode and uninstalled all usb suport to go back and reinstall. Can you guess?? Yea well that diddnt work either.

Now im pretty sure that its not a hardware issue with the board and its not a power issue either. I have found one other person with the same prob. that i am having with the same board. We have both contacted the manufactor about it but the dont seem to want to help all that much. They wanted me to update bios but i explained to them that was the first thing i did. I love there reasoning. LOL

If anyone can please help me please do.

I recently purchased a HP 530 notebook with Windows Vista Business. I tried to install a Lexmar 4300 series printer. The CD that came with the printer did not include a driver for Windows Vista, so I went to the HP site to download the file - here is the address of the driver download: http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-pe...:479:0:0&searchLang=en&os_group=Windows Vista

When I click the download button and hit save the file to my computer, the download starts but never completes. I get an error message saying that the file cannot be downloaded and it appears that the download times out. I talked to the support folks at HP, and I followed their instructions. They say there is something my computer is doing to prevent the download.

I wondered if perhaps the Security settings on Windows Vista were preventing the download, so I turned everything off in the security panel and tried again, but the same thing happened. Is this likely a Vista problem? If so, any ideas how I can complete the download? Oris it more likely a problem with my Internet provider - Time Warner?

There is absolutely nothing else on the computer - I just turned it on for the first time, and the printer was the first thing I tried to install.

Hey there SevenForums,

I've been searching over the net for a while looking for the answer to the whole 'DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL' crash for some time now. My system is stable (for the most part) and I only see this happen when I begin a download for any game on Steam.

I've used the BlueScreenViewer to peer into the .dmp file and see what had caused said crash.

This is what I got.

((If you pay close attention, you can see that I have spent some time poking at this computer...))

I've tried reinstalling the offending application, but it didn't seem to have an effect on anything.

The zip file containing all the goodies of the crash details are attached to the thread in case they are needed. I also apologies in advance for my ignorance in some areas. I may not be paying careful attention to the minor details in my work as I eat my cereal on my desk. If any addition information is needed for assistance, I will be happy to go and retrieve it.

(Which should be proof enough. Who would willingly eat a bowl of cereal with liquids in it over their brand new computer? A sleep deprived individual, that's who. I will stop ranting now.)

Hey guys,

I wasn't sure where to put this, hopefully it's in the right spot;
I'm having an issue with one of my computers using Windows 7 when it comes to downloading certain file types and even buffering videos online. I am able to watch live streams of people playing games I play, I'm able to load Youtube videos, and I'm able to download .exe files for games I play. For some reason I can't seem to do anything else. It seems like music, movie, and .rar or .zip files all won't download. I have to right-click and "Save link as" just to get to the option of saving it, but after that the download gets stuck on "starting..."

I thought it might possibly be a specific browser problem, but Firefox, Chrome, and IE all have this problem. I tried disabling my anti-virus, turning off my Windows Firewall, and even making sure my router didn't have any funky settings but it's been to no good use. I went into the browsers and disabled all their internal security options, and that didn't help either. It's really starting to bug me, I can go to the same places and download the things with my Laptop (Vista OS). I know it sounds a bit ridiculous, has anyone else had this problem or have any ideas on what might be causing it?

Go beyond disabling it - uninstall it & install MSE instead (assuming you are not already using MSE).

Once that is out of the equation, we can start looking elsewhere - not sure where just yet.

Hi. Happy New Year! I have been having this problem with my daughter's Lenovo Y550 system since it was new. I just upgraded it to Windows 7 hoping it would fix the problem, but no luck. Here's what's happening:

we plug in a sandisk thumb drive to either usb port and it registers fine in device manager. When I plug in either an iPhone 3gs or a Seagate FreeAgent external drive, the computer doesn't know it's there. I have scoured the internet and tried several things including, reinstalling iTunes, deinstalling all of the ports and hubs under Universal Bus support in device manager and letting drivers reload on startup, booting from the device menu (PF12 on startup), The USB drives have been replaced, the iPhone has been replaced, etc. Here's the really strange thing: sometimes, one of the above will work and the devices will be clearly recognized. I can plug in and out..no problem. Once the system is either restarted, cold started, or hibernated, the devices are once again not recognized. I don't mean it doesn't know what they are, but rather doesn't even know I have plugged anything in!

We originally thought it was hardware and replaced drives. Then thought it was Vista, took off service pack 2 (which supposedly had a lot of problems), finally upgraded to Windows 7. Nothing has gotten any better.

It almost seems like something is getting overlaid during the startup after it's been fixed by one of the efforts above.

I have just got this machine which seems to load vista until it is about to display the login screen and stops with a black screen and a mouse pointer which moves about when the mouse is moved, it does the same in safe mode it gets to where I get the safe mode text in the corners and stops.

Tried a Vista repair but says no errors, Hirens HD Regenerate HD no errors found also a MEMtest no errors found, the only other thing thats displayed in safe mode is Documents folder but if I minimise this its just the black screen as a stated above.
System restore used from Vista install disk is also not working so I can't try that.

Is it zap and re-install time or can I repair, I know I can get any documents off machine if I install into another machine or put this drive as slave.

Can anyone help.

Hi, I'm new on here but I would really appreciate any help I could get on this subject. The computer at my work crashed (I work at a small comic book store so I'm pretty much the tech support girl) and would not boot so finally I decided to install a new copy of windows xp in it. I put the disk in and everything was going smoothly. Right up until the first time it needed to reboot. Instead of rebooting I got this:

Windows No Disk Exception
Processing message c0000013 parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6b7c 75b6b7c .
It gives the options of 'continue' , 'cancel' and 'try again' . It doesn't matter which one I press, it freezes and I cannot try to press another key. I have rebooted about 4 times, and each time the same. The mouse goes all wonky and nothing works. I have tried rebooting without the windows disk and the same thing happens. Then I put the windows disk back in and the same thing happened. I don't really know where to go from here and would very much appreciate any help. thanks.

Answer:Malware - Stops apps from starting

I am not seeing any malware in your logs. You are using an out of date version of MGTools.

As to your flash drives:
For the external Hard Drive and a USB stick.

Insert your flash drive before you begin. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the flash drive until Windows detects it to bypass the autorun feature. This will keep the autorun.inf from executing automatically.

Please have all your removable storage devices ready for disinfection.

Download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.

* Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
* Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
* It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
* Follow any prompts that may appear.
* The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
* Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
* There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
* Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

Now please do this online scan:
eSet Online Scan.

Now download the latest version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGto... Read more

I've got a little unusual problem that I've been trying to figure out all day.

I rarely turn off my pc, or even reboot it. For no particular reason I decided to turn off my PC this morning and about one hour later I came back to turn it on, only that it now refuses to turn on.

The first thing I was able to notice was an usual whistling noise which turned out to be coming from my hard drive. After unplugging my hard drive, the PC turned on fine and worked like a cham (of course it didn't load up XP since there was nothing to load)

Since I have two PCs in the house I tried plugging the hard drive into my other PC and wouldn't ya know it, it worked fine. I even swapped the power source and my computer worked normally, however the power source on my second pc isn't the greatest and my PC started turning off every 30 mins or so (I'm guessing it was over heating, the PSU was really hot)

Even stranger, since I had the PSU that was causing the problems in my second PC I decided to plug in the HDD to see if the PSU was the problem and the hard drive worked. Apon changing PSU's back to my main PC the hard drive was giving the error I started out with.

I'll try being a little more specific with the problem. The computer never starts, it doesn't even get to the bios, it just constantly reboots. Once I power up the PC my HD spins for less then a second, then stops (also makes an odd whistling noise which it normally doesn't make), my CDrom also spins for a split second but ... Read more

Answer:HDD stops pc from starting up, works fine under different PSU

Id say definatly the PSU is to blame. If you tried swapping your HD's and it worked fine in another PC, then the PSU's to blame. Are you sure the whistling is the HD and not the PSU, ive had whilstling PSU's before.

PSU's are always going wrong, if they over heat due to overloading then they will stop working due to the trip switch. (hence the restarting ever 30 mins, please tell me if i have read this wrong)

You say you have already swapped the PSU for another one, from your other pc, was that the one resarting every 30 mins? If so then your overloading the PSU, thus overheating and then the restart to try and save its life. If you did not swap it, then your original PSU has gone wrong and needs to be replaced anyhow.

I know this is a load of crap, but im thinking that suggesting things is better then keeping quite and not getting the problem solved.

Hope you get it fixed.

The one time it's done something different: the first time I tried to install from the download file, it gave me a BSOD (0X0000007a, 0xC0000185, ataport.SYS) but I haven't been able to reproduce that and I'm not sure at what point in the update process it happened.

Installation is only a week old. It's Enterprise, using a volume-license MAK key, and correctly registered.

I have use the SURT, it installed properly, and the CheckSUR log says no errors detected.
sfc / scannow reports no errors.
There are no error codes in Windows Update.
chkdsk reports no errors.

I have tried both the Windows Update installer, and downloading the SP1 pack to install - same result.
I have scanned for viruses and malware and then uninstalled my antivirus (yes, I'm being very paranoid about what sites I go to right now).
I have cleared out the Windows Update cache and re-checked for updates.
I have cleared out temporary files (used CCleaner, did not let it mess with my registry)
I have uninstalled drivers for everything except my NVIDIA graphics card.
I have disabled all non-microsoft services on startup and rebooted.

The CBS folder is 190 gig. It keeps making more and more timestamped CBSPersist.log files that are 15-55Gb each. My CBS.log file alone is 20Gb. I have an install trying to run at the moment, and the CBS.log file grew 2Gb in the ten m... Read more

I got a virus that shut my computer down in a few seconds after a dozen virus warnings. At that point I could not boot up my computer because halfway through the boot process there was a BSOD and it restarted. This happens in normal mode and all of the safe modes.

An interesting thing to note is that at one point safe mode actually worked, at which point i was able to remove the virus and boot back into normal mode. Everything was fine. All my programs worked, all my files were still there, nothing was damaged or missing. In the past I've had viruses wipe all my drives completely, but this time everything was intact, once I got into Windows that one time. All was fine for a day but then I shut down my computer thinking that everything was taken care of, and now I can't reboot it again -- the same bsod issue.

I'm not sure why or how I managed to boot it up that one time -- I didn't do anything special. I'm hesitant to reformat since I know that my windows and my files are all okay, it's just the bootup that's boned, and apparently I got past it once so I'd like to know if I could do it again.

Does anyone know what might be happening? I used the windows installation CD to do a chkdsk but that didn't solve the problem. There was also an option to repair the boot record or something like that, but I did not use it since I didn't know enough about what it does.

I am using Windows XP 32bit, with 4G ram, radeon hd 6850
Any help... Read more

Answer:Recurring BSOD halfway through windows bootup?

Can you boot into safemode this time?

If not you can do a repair install from the cd and your data will remain intact but you'll have to redo all updates. Here's the way to do it http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If you keep on getting viruses I'd suggest upping your security. My xp machine has a hardware firewall on the router, a software firewall, Zonealarm, SpywareBlaster, Avast av free, Superantispyware, MalwareBytes and Advanced SystemCare. I rarely have any probs and never pick a up virus.

My taskbar freezes halfway on startup (including time) It only loads Search&Destroy and ATI. I tryed to get a HijackThis logg but that freezes halfway. I can't open i.e, I can't see my c:/d: drive etc. I can't scan for virusses with norton.

When I press crt+alt+del and go to users no user is signed on so I can't get in admin mode.

I don't know what to do to fix this, I'm thinking of formatting my pc as last resort,

Please let me know what I have to do, thanks in advance!

I have a VAIO VGN-TXN25N laptop and have been most unhappy with it. I have not used it in a while and now found a website that says " Microsoft® Windows® XP Compatible Downloads For VAIO® Computers That Shipped With Windows Vista® Operating System Posted: 09/25/2007 Due to popular demand Sony is offering Microsoft® Windows® XP® compatible drivers and utilities for VAIO® computers that originally shipped with the Windows Vista® operating system. These files are intended to provide basic system functionality under Windows XP operating system."

I want to know if I can do this or if I should leave well enough alone....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How many versions did you try?  Why did you try different versions?

Hi, new to this website. After looking at a few tutorials and posts, and after having given up on my laptop, I thought I should ask the experts of this forum for a little help...The System:Toshiba Satellite A30Windows XPNot sure of the specs. for the computer, but it is a good few years old, maybe 4 years. The Problem:I've always had minor problems with my laptop, but not like this. After starting up my computer I have about 3 or 4 minutes before it doesn't respond to anything I do. By respond I mean if I click on a programme, be it short-cut or in the start menu it doesn't open it up. It simply displays the loading icon on the mouse, thens stops. (Sometimes it gives me longer before it stops doing anything if I open a few programmes quickly as soon as it starts-up.)After this stage, I try to shut down. However my computer won't do that either, like other people on this forum with similar problems I have to hold down the power button; as after clicking 'shut down' it freezes.Maybe this wont help, but when I try to shutdown, it comes up with error messages, like normal ones where you have to click 'End Now' ***What I've Tried:I tried opening the TaskManager but it won't let me do that. (Ctrl+Alt+Del , and by right clicking task bar > task manager)
I've tried system restore, a number of times.
I've tried running a programme to monitor what's goin' on on my PC, though it was primitive, it didn't show any errors.
