Vista Almost Randomly "Crashes" Few Minutes After Login

Question: Vista Almost Randomly "Crashes" Few Minutes After Login

After almost a whole day scratching my head, I finally decide t seek help.

My Vista PC has been acting up only recently, crashing every open program a few minutes after logging in with the press of a key or a click of the cursor. Task manager doesn't pop up, and when you open it before the crashes, it decides to join in the fun. Control-alt-delete doesn't help either, as it just makes me wait three minutes after pressing the combination, takes me to a black screen, and a few more minutes later, gives me a dialog box saying: "Failed to create security options." The mouse cursor can still move, so it's not a full on system crash, though everything else doesn't. I let this wait out for more than two hours, it still stays the same.

After so many forced restarts, I tried some of the security options:
Safe Mode - Doesn't work, only seems to restart the system once it's done "loading core drivers."
Boot from last successful boot attempt - same thing, crash after login.
Check for memory errors - No errors, that's the thing.
System restore - tried restoring to a point before the crashes started happening, yet they still happen.
Reset operating system - I'm not that desperate to try that just yet.
Start windows normally - Same thing.
Also, to see that it might not be a hardware problem, I try running Ubuntu and XP installed on the same system. No mysterious crashing, so the problem is isolated in Vista.

The only new software I've installed are some games, though they've been installed some time before the crashes started happening.

I've also tried updating my system, though I can't keep it on long enough to download and install without crashing.

More info on the system:

Acer Aspire AX1800
2 GB Memory
Pentium E2220 CPU
Vista Home Basic SP1

As you can see, I'm stumped. I'm just short of reinstalling Vista, or going to the shop to buy Windows 7. I'd really like to keep some of my files and programs intact, so I'm not ready to do that just yet.

Thanks to anyone willing to help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition (SP1 I believe). When i go to log on to either of the screennames on the computer, both admin, one password protected, it hangs for several minutes on "Loading your personal settings..."
It loads eventually, but when it does the hard drive makes an audible grunting sound and the desktop loads up normal except for the taskbar. Most programs work properly (at least through the desktop shortcuts that I have), however Windows Media Player refuses to even load at all, and the only way I can get to my documents is through My Computer, however I am unable to open anything in any folders that aren't .exe files. Pictures, videos, pretty much any media is unresponsive and it seems that only .txt files will open.
I have tried to open windows in safe mode, but the taskbar still doesn't open and it is EXTREMELY slow, with the same side effects as stated before.
Now, i most situations, I would simply borrow a reformat disc from a friend, but I'd rather not lose all of my music and videos.
If possible, I need to get this issue sorted out extremely quickly, as I'm lacking on some fairly important files on that computer. Any other details I can give, just ask and I'll see what I can do. Open to suggestions, pretty much anything logical.

Answer:Login hangs on "Loading your personal settings..." loads after a few minutes, but...

You should give us your computer specs in case the problem involves one specific hardware. You did mention you're hearing grunting sounds on load up which sounds as if your hard drive maybe on the brink. Have a look at the following link it may help solve your problem

My internet explorer just crashes after 25 minutes. It says
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and just restarting IE won't help. I have to restart my internet connection all over, disconnect and reconnect. It's so annoying and I don't know what to do about it. What do I do?? I've tried getting a system mechanic program and trying that, and it just wont help. It has an antivirus with it and I use it too, and it says I don't have a virus...any ideas?

Answer:My Internet Explorer says "Cannot display webapge" after 25 crashes!

how long has this been going on? did it occur at about the same time you added or removed any hardware or software? are you connected hardwire using ethernet cable or wireless? I am assuming you have a DSL or highspeed connection. do you have a desktop or laptop, ? do you have a firewall program running too? have you tried a different internet browser like Firefox or Opera and does it do the same with those browsers?

I've tried everything I can to get rid of this problem but couldn't get it solved.
I have a win7 x64 Pro Asus B43J, Intel i5 M560, 8GB ram laptop. I've bought it about 3 months ago. At the beginning it BSODd after being idle for about 10 minutes which went away after reinstalling the OS last week, but now I have this problem of random BSODs while I'm browsing the net or running Photoshop.
For example I'm unable to download any Windows update because after 2 minutes into it the computer crashes.
Ran a full scan with Microsoft Sec Essentials and Ms Malicious Software removal Tool but didn't find anything. Also ran the MS memory diagnostic tool which also indicated that everything is fine.

I've attached the minidump as a rar could anyone pls look into it and advice me what to do?

Thank you!

I am running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. Whenever I set the option "Turn off the display" to "Never", it reverts back to the default "15 minutes". This is under the "High Performance" profile. I have never, since Windows 3.11, ever had a setting change itself back. I have tried to change it and restart. It will either revert upon restart or shortly after. It will revert back even if I do not restart.

That sounds like my problem - I leave the computer for an hour and it is shut down (I think sleep mode). I just need to hit the power button and it comes on to where it was when I left - but 2 of my USB devices are lost so I have to restart the computer anyway.

I changed all the power settings to NEVER. But his doesn't seem to make any difference......

Hi All,

Whenever someone in my family walks away from using the computer with Windows Vista, after the Screen Saver, I'm always taken to a screen that allows only the last user to log back in, but when someone else wants to log in, they need to hit the "Switch User" button to choose a different name.

My question is... Can I have the computer just go back to showing all the users' names (so I don't have to click the "Switch User" button to login as me). I would like this to work, just as XP did... so if the last person who used the computer has to log back in, s/he would just have to click their name again...just like XP did.

Thanks so much!

Hi all! First time poster here...

I recently bought an HP Pavillion Elite m9280f PC. It's running Vista x64 on a quad-core 2.5 GHz Intel, with 4GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT. Full specs are available here.

Every once in a while, my computer randomly slows down for a few seconds -- the best way I can describe it is, Vista "burps." If I'm watching a movie, the video hangs, then fast-forwards really sharply to catch up to the audio, which proceeded as normal. If I'm typing (wireless USB keyboard), Vista drops a few letters before returning to normal ("... Vsta dps fw lters before returning to normal"). If I'm moving my wireless USB mouse, the cursor jerks across the screen.

Some random info: Sometimes I have torrents running, other times I don't. I know I RAID'ed my hard drives (0 or 1 or.. whichever one stripes them for increase performance at half capacity). I have Norton Protection Center ("NPC") running, too. I tend to leave my computer on all the time. I have turned off Indexing, but not Superfetch. I ran Driver Genius Pro and updated all of my drivers (perhaps it did something wrong, and installed a faulty driver?).

I've tried having ProcMon (a process monitor) running, and watching it when there's a slowdown. I've noticed NPC running when it happens, and also the HP "My Display" service. Both of these are doing things when there are no slow downs, though, and there are so many... Read more

I have an extra account showing on my login screen called "Please logon and initialize your device". I don't know how it got there and when I click on it a smaller message under this account name says 'Press ESC for the Welcome Screen. However it actually just returns to the main logon screen. Also it does not show up on the Manage User Accounts screen so I can't remove it that way. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this account (error).

The problem is solved. It turns out that my laptop has a fingerprint scanner and it needs to be activated when more than one user accounts exist. It allows a user to login in by fingerprint scan. Way cool!

Well, I have a big problem. I have a laptop that was manufacturer by TOSHIBA with Vista Home Premium OS. And I haven't used it in awhile, so I kinda forgot the Windows Login Password. It's only one account on it, the "Administrator" account. So the problem is I need to login on that laptop, but sadly, I didn't make a "reset disk" for the password on it. Is there anyway I can ever log back onto it? Please Help.

Do you have the vista DVD? If so you can boot from the dvd and during the setup there is a key combo (shift-F10) that varies from mfr to mfr. That will get you to the command prompt. You may not need to run as admin but just in case this is how>>>> ( right click the top bar and run as admin) type net user administrator /active:true

that will enable the built in hidden admin account. reboot logon change password.

Vista won't let me logon, I get a message :
"The Group Policy Client Service failed the logon"

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service"

I've been trying to narrow this problem down for the last few days.

I did a system restore back a number of days, no user programs were installed, but there were system updates installed. Once I do the system restore and turn off the updates, the computer reboots fine and I can log in.

However, if I let the MS updates in, then when I reboot, I get the error and cannot logon.

Clearly there is a problem when the updates happen, and causes this. I originally thought it was due to a specific MS update, but I think it's the update process that is broken. That is what kills the system configuration and then it can't logon.

If anyone has an idea here, I'd really appreciate it.

This is Vista 32 with SP2.

I have a machine with Vista Ultimate x64 on it (more specs at the end). It is joined to a Windows SBS 2003 domain.

When I log in to either my domain account or the local administrator account, I get "Welcome," then "Preparing your desktop," then a blank blue screen with just mouse cursor.

Ctrl-Shift-Esc does not invoke task manager. Win-R does not bring up the Run dialog. Ctrl-Alt-Delete provides security screen, but Task Manager can't be invoked there.

I can boot into safe-mode or safe-mode with networking and successfully log into both accounts. (WTF?)

Things I've tried:
* Done Vista startup repair. It claims there is no problem (and it's sorta right - I *can* startup a normal windows startup, I just can't properly log in)
* Logged in with safe mode and done chkdsk /f on all relevant volumes
* Done sfc /scannow - nothing interesting
* Changing HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Shell to "Explorer.exe" (it used to b cmd.exe /k start cmd.exe)
* Deleted the HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices key and allowed it to be regenerated. No effect.
* Removing the machine from the domain, and adding it back
* Using net user Administrator /active:yes to activate the machine\Administrator account. I can log in (to a normal windows startup) on that account and get a desktop. But...then what.

No ghosting, drive letter shenanigans, etc. have been carried out.

Running out of ideas. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I booted to safe-mode with networking and logged in with my domain account. I ran msconfig and disabled UAC there. Then restarted.
After that I was able to log in to my domain account from a normal windows startup.

Things are very askew.

* If I try to do Properties on Computer, no properties appear
* Start > Control Panels is empty
* The Event Log service is not running, and when I try to start it, I get Access Denied.
* Same with the ISA Firewall Client. (not running, access denied trying to start)
* Windows defender wants to get new definitions but gets 0x8024402c trying.
* Internet access doesn't seem to work (dns errors), even though ipconfig looks ok and DNS service is running
* My Antivirus software is running (Computer Associates eTrust) and does not seem to be upset
* Mamutu anti-Malware is running and doesn't seem to be upset about anything

Question: crashes "randomly"

I built my computer about half way through December of 09 and it was working great untill i moved it from my dorm room to my house. while playing GTA IV i got a bunch of red lines through my display and the sound froze then it bluescreened. GTA IV has never crashed the system since. Then it was Galactic Civilizations II: ToA. Same exact happening. Then it happened in Universe at War: Earth Assault. After that crash (which was the same general format of crash) i opened up my box and checked all wires and all slots. all connections were solid. Back to universe at war. A bit in it crashed again. I realized that by playing a custom campaign scenario in UaW i could get it to crash really easily so i begain download things to monitor my computer. GPU temp never goes up (or down) from 68C memory wasn't full, CPU wasn't maxed, core temp was acceptable. I was at a loss. Sometimes the desplay messed up. Sometimes it just goes black and the monitor light flashes. Sometimes the sound remains fine. Sometimes it freezes. Sometimes it bluescreens and other times it just sits there useless till i reboot. Finally i just gave up and decided that it was UaW not the computer. Well not a half hour ago i was playing bioshock and big chunks of the display turned green the sound froze and then the display shut off like previously described. My computer completely froze upon opening the lid and logging back into my account (as far as I can remember, this is the first occasion this has happened since I got it in July.) I restarted and attempted to log back in but the process was stuck at the "waiting..." portion of the log in screen with the circling cursor. After a few minutes, I gave up and restarted attempting to boot into safe mode. Safe Mode was not functional, it failed to even open to the log in screen.

I am not sure how to fix this issue. As far as I can tell, this isn't even virus-related, but I'm honestly not too sure. I closed the lid in the middle of a session, went to eat, came back, and it simply was not working. It was functioning fine up until I attempted to open the lid.

Thanks for the help,

Hi, being new here. I just discovered having this problem today. First thing this morning I went to my computer. When the login screen came up, I entered in my user and password. Then I saw the "Welcome". Which stayed there for about five minutes before I restarted the computer, which didn't fix my problem. I tried Safe Mode, which didn't make a difference. It didn't take as long, but then I saw the blue screen. It said something like "---- unexpectedly close." Then at the bottom there were memory dumps. I couldn't see what was there because the blue screen was there for five seconds, before the PC restarted itself.

It was working fine last night. Before my six year old sister was playing with the computer despite my attempts to make a password account and full parental controls.

I believe I did manage to log in to another account that's not the administrator, but when I when to modify the user accounts the whole motherboard crashed. Every program, even the desktop. I couldn't do Alt + Tab and the Ctrl +Alt + Delete.

Please help me fix this thing. I need it to do my classwork.

Hello, i have been living with this issue for some time now. I run XP pro, I have a 2GHZ AMD processor with 1GB of RAM. I normally leave my computer on but when I have to reboot it is painful. I run disk dfrag, adaware, spybot, cc cleaner, spyware blaster, spywareguare etc... on a regular basis. I have run Hyjack This files in the past, I have tried deleting the prefetch files. I have run MS bootVIS. Would anyone consider helping me to put this to bed. i almost think that it sounds like a hardware issue but i'm not sure how to diagnose the problem. I have gone into msconfig and reducing the programs that start at boot-up but this didn't help much.\

Ok, so I'm trying to fix my fiances computer, and I'm having some difficulties pinpointing the problem's origin. She has a dell studio 1535, running Vista Home Edition, 3 Gb of RAM, Intel duo 6400 processor (I believe) and an ATI Mobile Radeon 3400 Graphics Card.

The problem is when it tries to boot into normal mode, it goes through the boot screen, then tries to load the accounts at the login screen but the accounts never come up. Instead you see "Please Wait" -> Black screen -> "Please Wait" -> Black screen over and over again until you turn off the computer (rarely the computer will restart itself). The cursor is still seen and moveable(doing the loading circle constantly) but otherwise that's all that can be done.

You can get into Safe Mode without a problem, and I talked her through how to restore it to before Christmas over the phone (which she did) but it didn't fix the issue. I've tried to restore further back than that but for some reason all of the restore points have been deleted now. I've tried installing KAV to run a scan in safe mode, but even running as admin, it begins to run the install file then just goes away without a reason. Also as it turns out she hasn't had an Anti-Virus software running for about 9 months (I have no idea why) and she is on the internet a lot.

I've tried messing with the display drivers (disabling them and restarting in normal mode) but with no success, as we... Read more

I manage the Networks for several companies remotely and not all users are computer friendly enough to know both their username and password, only their Password. So, when doing maintenance and I log on to a PC as an administrator or other user I will often
get a call the next day that their "password is not working" because it is using the last logged on user, which this time is me.

Is it possible in any way to set either a default domain user, or set it to a most often logged on model instead of the current last user or the alternative of prompting for user name every time?

Running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on HP Pavilion TX 1250ee laptop.
I have a problem logging into Windows Vista. I get the screen up which allow me to select my account and enter a password. Then I get a welcome message.
Trouple is it goes no further .
The Screen went black with only a white cursor showing.
Seconds later, an error showed up saying
failed to set data for 'Shell'
I've left it for few hours but nothing changed.

I did some troubleshooting like testing the Hard Disk using the Built in Self Test in BIOS and everything was pass.

I tried to login through safe mode and fortunatlly it's ok.
but I don't exactlly know what's the problem?

Before it did happen I was creating CD recovery for my computer using the Recovery Manager.
Also, there was some updates from Windows which I think what cause the problem.

I'm still troubleshooting and waiting for any respond from you guys.

So i'm doing loads of Vista troubleshooting tonight, working out all the kinks. Got the sound, internet, and video working (mostly I think), but when I try to come back from low-power state standby or sleep mode, the computer freezes and my video goes all crazy. I get lovely streaks of green, like my desktop was just hit by a grain shredder, and it won't function anymore - if I hit the power button it'll shut down and work fine when I turn it back up again. I updated the drivers, least I thought I updated the drivers, from nVidias website.

Any ideas? Its integrated GeForce6100 graphics on the AM2 biostar board with the same name - by no means a gaming machine, just a cheaper workstation. Athlon 3500 and Home Premium if that makes a difference.

EDIT: i tried going into dxdiagnostics to disable agp texture acceleration, but it won't let me disable it, no button

Hi everyone,

I recently have noticed more and more BSODs. I had this problem about 6 months ago and was able to track it down to drivers that came from Daemon tools. I cleared all that out and it fixed the issue. I don't think these new BSODs are related but they might be.

This seems to be happening randomly. It happens roughly every 2 weeks and early in the morning (1am, 6am, 9am, etc.) but not at a consistent time. As far as I can tell, I am not doing anything or leaving open any specific program that triggers this. There doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern.

I ran the DM Log Collector and uploaded the zip file here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi All:
For over a year now I have had problems trying to save files in a different place to that suggested by Vista e.g. Vista might suggest saving a file to C:\User\Documents\ (say) but I want to save it to D:\Subject\File name. As soon as I enter the new location Word promptly crashes. (It will save to the original suggested location with no problem).
I thought that this was an MS Office 2003 problem and uninstalled MS Office and installed "Open Office" instead. However, exactly the same problem occurs, so it would seem to be down to Vista (Basic).

Anyone seen this one before?

I am using an Acer 5051 laptop, 2GHz uP, 2GB RAM, 60GB HDD, VISTA Basic OS.

All and any help appreciated.

Hi Guys

Installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64 onto an old PC of mine and have hit a problem never experienced before;

The install process goes as expected but just after ending my username (and PC name) and get to the login screen I get a strange error. Excuse me for not making a note of the error but it related to the Group policy login service being unable to start and it would do something related to a "Universal.... service" I think the abbreviation would have been UUS or UUUS? Currently doing the install again so if it happens a second time ill make a note and edit the post.

The HD is a reconditioned one I have bought so my suspicions are with it however and cdkdsk didnt turn up any errors. I am doing the install onto an old PATA drive now just to check it out though.

So the error message is Ok to a degree but after the error the PC shuts down and after the BIOS stuff I just have a black screen with a flashing underscore "_". Almost as if the Windows install cannot boot. Done all standard stuff checked the boot priority, tried manual boot and it failed. I booted into Ubuntu Live and it worked OK so I know the BIOS is OK.

I assume that at the user creation stage Windows is running from my HD and not the disc? Or is it all disc until a final reboot? Ive not checked the RAM (yet) but since its not even booting after the error it seems more like a Windows related thing?

Any suggestions?

Answer:Windows 7 Install, crashes at login screen (after "install")

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

I tried to rename computer and now there's two entries in log in screen. That new one is set as default and wouldn't accept any password but original (normal) one does. Long in is set on auto but still have to chose between those 2 when starting/restarting.
I can't find that new one anywhere to disable/delete it. Not in Users or any other place for handling accounts.
How to get rid of or where to find it ?

Answer:Reanamed "Computer", now 2 of "Me" at login screen.

Not knowing if this is what happened in your case, but what you describe occasionally happens when Windows is set up to sign in automatically to a user account and then computer name is changed.

The reason is that a full username as long as Windows is concerned is different than username from user's point of view; Mike in your case or Kari in mine are usernames for most we do and need to use a username for but actually they are just user profile names. For Windows the username is ComputerName\UserProfileName.

On laptop I am writing this for instance my full username is AGM-W10LAP01\Kari, even when I am in fact using a Microsoft account. Three different things: my Windows sign-in user account is a Microsoft account [email protected], my user profile name is Kari, my full username is AGM-W10LAP01\Kari.

Long story short, that other you which does not accept your password is doing so because it is user OldComputerName\Mike. That computer name is no longer valid making the username invalid.

I've seen the duplicate using old computer name as part of full username going away when Windows after computer name change is then set to sign in automatically with a local admin account. Restart and remove automatic sign in and see if it works.

As this question was never answered I'll post it verbatim with my own comments below,
See original post here;

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). AS the last discussion degraded into useless questions about hardware and other OS's let's get a confirmation that someone out there actually has a flash drive that turns its activ... Read more

Answer:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

Well, about an hour into my Vista Expirance... maybe after my 4th or 5th reboot... I couldnt open Control Panel. No error or anything.. just you see a small window where control pantel should be, then closes in less than 1 second. If you try to right click on My Computer, then go to properties (to see like computer info) it dosent do anything at all....

So I format.... everything is Good to go.. and at a totally different time, before I even load any drivers... same deal. No Control Panel or anything.

I tried pressing F8 and trying Disable Driver signature enforcement and it worked for 1 reboot... now again, no control panel... ?

I am being driven crazy, PLLLLEEESSSEE Help. My laptop, running Windows vista Basic, shows that it is connected to the internet with Excellent signal strength both wireless and ethernet. However it says "Unidentified Network" and "Access: Local Only" and is not really connected to the internet. My Tower computer (on Windows XP) is connected, that is what I am using now. My MAC IPad is connected fine. I recently changed my Router to TP-LINK through my local provider (Don't want to call him out to fix it as it will cost me an automatic 50 Euros). I live in Spain. I have tried all sorts eg disabling IvP6 etc but no internet. Can anyone out there please help me.
Thanks, Jim

I bought a computer back in December with Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium. I set most folders to "view list" and either "sort by date modified" ascending or "sort by name" ascending. It seems like most of the time when I go to a folder after having changed another folder's "view _____" or "sort by _____" or ascending\descending settings regardless of of what directory it's in, the folder will have changed to different "view by _____" and\or "sort by _____" and\or ascending\descending settings. Anybody know of a fix? Thanks!

Answer:Vista and "sort by _" and "view _" folder settings changing from what I set it to

Welcome to probably the most irritating Vista problem in existence. Microsoft has not even acknowledged that this is a problem yet the web is absolutely overrun by people complaining about it.

The problem is there is left over XP code and the folder settings are stored in 2 places, one for XP and one for Vista. Also, the automatic folder 'sense' that Vista has, where it determines the contents and adjust the folder accordingly, effects it. Those 3 registry keys basically fight over the settings. I've actually had the folders reset, then go back on their own before. Basically the fix that people have the best luck with is erasing the XP keys, increasing the 'bag' size, to store more folder information, and to disable the auto sense. You then have to manually set folders to Music, Pictures and Video, etc...

1. Go to Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization -> Folder Options.
2. View tab -> Uncheck Remember each folder view settings.
3. Press Reset all folders, then apply to all folders. Press apply, then OK.
4. Run the following registry file. Copy this text into a Notepad file. Save it as 'all files', so you can add your own extension. Name it something like Fix.reg ... it will appear as a registry file that merges with the registry.

When attempting to save a document or browse to open a file from within an ap, the dialogue box freezes for 10 secs or so when trying to browse to preferred save location. This may turn into a double post for which I will apologize in advance.

Ok. I formatted my computer and created a dual boot with Windows ME and XP on separate partitions on the same hard drive. As soon as I had each OS installed I used the Windows Update CD and then went to the Windows Update site to finish up. Everything went without a hitch when I go to this site I have to login everytime and not only that, but when I click on anything within the site itself it "forgets" that I'm already logged on and I have to re-login every time I click on a thread or subforum or anything. This is when I'm running under Windows ME only. (I'm on XP right now and everything seems fine). I have tried resetting my IE settings back to default with no luck, and I downloaded Firefox and it does the same thing. I'm not registered with any other sites of this type so I don't know if it's just this site I can't stay logged into or if there's a bigger problem lurking somewhere.
One more thing, my father had this same problem with a similar site he was registered with and it happened to him after using the Windows Security Update cd. He fixed his problem by uninstalling and reinstalling WalMart Connect. My ISP doesn't have any software to uninstall. I just type the settings into Dial-Up-Networking and that's it. My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

First post!

Hopefully somewhere here can help me fix my in-laws' new computer. They bought an HP Pavillion that runs Vista 2 weeks ago. I worked fine until yesterday when anytime someonew types "h" or "s" something funky happens: The "h" loads "Hardware Diagnostic Tools" and the "s" loads "HP Support Information." This happens regardless of the application or the keyboard (I already swapped out a different keyboard and that didn't work). Is there a setting in Vista that somehow the h and s were assigned these two programs as hot keys? These seems like a stupid settings issue but I couldn't find anything within the hardware section of the Control Panel but I may not be looking in the right place. Any advice would be appreciated!

Today, after months of use, my wife's computer suddenly declared on startup that her copy of Vista Ultimate is not genuine. (It came from the Microsoft store in Redmond, and installed nicely without problems; our son works for Microsoft and was kind enough to buy us both copies of Ultimate.) On reboot, it said "Activation was successful" but also has "This copy of Windows is not genuine" in the lower right corner of the screen. Any ideas on what happened or how to fix this? Hopefully I'm posting in the correct forum section and that this isn't a topic that has been discussed frequently as I've done extensive searches and browsing before deciding to post.

So here's the problem/annoyance I'm encountering and I'm wondering if there's some sort of solution out there:

I have Vista Home Basic and IE7. I can download files quite fine, but the problem is that when I try to open the file either from the dialogue window that shows up after the download OR when the file opens automatically after a download, a new dialogue window shows up that says "Verify" (apparently while the system verifies the file for who knows what).

Now, that window showing doesn't really bother me that much, even though it does bother me, the real problem arises when you download multiple files at the same time and open those files because once the system tries to verify all those files at the same time it ends up crashing the browser.

So what I'm mainly looking for is a setting that would disable this file verification by Vista/IE7.

I have a fairly good computer, with 2GB of RAM, 2.20 Dual Core processor so I really really doubt this is a performance issue.

Can provide screenshots if needed.

I have an HP Pavilion and cannot get the machine to power down into Sleep Mode or Hibernation. When I first bought this PC the middle of last year I remember reading after my first Windows Update that the feature might be lost as a result of the Windows Updating process. However, as the months have gone by and more and more apps having been installed and loaded on to this machine, it now takes longer for it to boot up. I always liked the Hibernate feature on my old Windows XP machine, but since I lost the Sleep and Hibernation features on this machine and realized why they were gone shortly after having purchased it, I just went ahead with complete shut downs and cold boots. At this point though I'm pretty tired of the extended waits for the machine to boot up all the time so I would like to know if it's possible, and if so, how, I might get the Sleep or Hibernate features back on this machine.

I wasn?t sure what other Section to post this message in since I don?t see an applicable Heading, so I went with the General Folder.

Let me explain that title... I am looking in the desktop directory which I accessed from "My Computer" (actually on WinVista it's called just "Computer" but you know what I mean). From looking in the desktop directory, I see some files there which I do not see on the actual desktop! There are two such files. When I minimize all windows and look at my desktop in its entirety, those two extra files are nowhere to be seen. Yet Win still thinks they're there somehow. If I try to paste the same file to the desktop, it asks me if I want to replace the one already there.

Answer:Win Vista: how can 2 items on desktop be "missing" when they are actually "there"??!

The Icons may have been moved off the screen, I've had that happen before, annoying but pretty minor bug, since they came/come back later. Or you can select "auto arrange" which should fix it, then you can switch back to whatever view you prefer. (if it happens again or to anyone else reading this thread.)

I really cannot figure out how to do a proper search in Vista.

Is there an option to search for hidden files?

How do I search for a specific file type?

How do I know when a search has finished?

Remember the drop-down box in XP which would give you the option for selecting a specific file type?

Or the fact that a search could be done (no name) to display the entire contents of a folder or drive?

WTF man...
I really don't get this new search system.....

How about the DELETE option, Why is this thing RECYCLING ALL THE TIME.

Why does it take so long to delete something from the drive. (I changed the recycled size limit to only 500mb)

Answer:How does "SEARCH" and / or "DELETE" work in Vista?

1) You need to unhide hidden files in order to search for them, same as XP

2) You can always turn off the recycling bin, or hold down shift and delete, to remove the files right away, same as XP.

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at, or Hotmail at

I just installed Windows 8 on an older Compaq laptop (a 6715b). I keep hearing the bun-bun-bump downward sound you normally hear when you do something like unplug a USB device or something like that. Except it's happening over and over for no very apparent reason; no pop-up bubbles or messages giving info about what's causing it. What logs should I look at to try and narrow down what hardware is causing this?

Answer:Solved: Keep hearing the "device disconnected" sound every couple of minutes

I am having trouble just viewing the "Downloads" folder in Windows Explorer It used to just be a periodic thing, now it takes literally 2-5 minutes to load this folder! (I cannot even sort it while it is loading!)

I noticed in Resource Monitor that "MsMpEng.exe" (Microsoft Security Essentials) is checking each and every file in there everytime I open it. (Hundreds of line-items in Resource Monitor.)

So something must be flagging most of these files as changed or something so that MSE is going in and re-scanning everything.

Does anyone know what causes this and how I can fix it?

Here are some [perhaps ] pertinant notes about my Downloads Folder:
It is very large, with almost 1,000 items. However, I want to keep it large as I have many apps running directly from the folder. (There are of course sub-folders for organization, but I find having a single download spot is good for catching things I may have already downloaded...)
I have it mapped from C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Downloads to D:\...\Downloads (My C: drive is an SSD so I keep this large amount of data off it.)
I made sure to add this to the Windows Index.\
The "Date Accessed" date is updated to today for about 1/3 of the files (300 or so) even though I am only really accessing no more than 3-10 per day. It does not seem to matter what type of file it is (exe, zip, etc...)
I added this to my "Favorites"; however, this happens regardless of if I access the folder via Favori... Read more

Answer:"Downloads" folder takes minutes to load in Windows Explorer

My current downloads folder has 1,000 files and in the initial access, it took about 10 seconds to display the Details list as configured/sorted. Intel i7mobile. No indexing. Subsequent closing and re-opening took about 2 seconds to display as configured/sorted. A separate folder of 50 files took 4 seconds to display in its initial access. Near-instantaneous subsequent access.

May I suggest creating subfolders to reduce the 1,000 to a more manageable 20-50? Beat your head against the wall (2-5 minutes) or an extra click or two once in a while? Which is more unbearable?

Answer:"Default Gateway not found" Wifi shuts down ever 5-30 minutes

Going to bed now, will check up in the morning. A few details that i forgot to mention:

The wifi has been working fine for allmost two years before this problem occured.

Sometimes I have to reboot my computer because the troubleshooter simply states that "The card is having problems and cannot start". When the computer turns back on the wifi card is turned off and normally starts just fine. If it does not however I will have to reboot again (rince and repeat)

I was using my Nokia Lumia 520 to browse internet, then power went off, when i tried loggin back , but the message i gives on my screen is, "try again in 779396 minutes, emergency call only"....i can see messages come in, but i cant open them, i can receive phone calls, but i cant make any call, i cant even get anywhere to type my passcode to open it up.
I cant wait for those forever minutes to access the phone, is there a way to gain access please?
Kindly urgently advice,

The power went off, you mean like the battery died or you accidently turned it off? Also did you try shutting down your phone and restart it? Just press and hold the power button for a few seconds and then swipe down when it says "slide down to power off" If that doesn't work then try removing the battery from the phone (after you shut it off of course) wait a few seconds, put the battery in and power on the phone.
Lastly if that doesn't work you will need to do a factory reset of it. This is important you do it last since all of your data will be deleted and the OS reformatted.
Step 1. Turn off your phone then press and hold the power key until it vibrates then release.
Step 2. Press and hold the volume down key. If the exclamation mark will be shown on the screen, you can now release the button.
Step 3. You need to input these key combination:
Volume Up > Volume Down > Power > Volume Down.
After that it'll reset your phone. Which it is guaranteed to work.

So I bought a brand new computer, everything is new. Clean Windows 7 64bit installation and all, but recently I started getting this Bluescreen, from what I would say out of nowhere as my computer ran just fine for a month. I have tried to remove memory sticks, Harddrives, CD-ROM. I also bought a brand new harddrive for a different problem (Which I solved) a week ago, so all hardware is only 1 month old.

I ran CHKDSK, found no problems, checked memory timings (Somewhat, I'm not really a brainiac when it comes to doing tests and looking at numbers) and ran a memory test which found no problems with my current memory stick.

My bluescreens occurr kinda random, 5-15 minutes apart, so I can start the computer just fine, everything works like it should but then all of a sudden BSOD with the messege "Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area". Never seen that one before and I've tried a lot, just now I uninstalled daemon tools, but when i started up again it BSOD 5 mins in.

Now on the other hand, I've managed to keep the computer running for maybe 30 minutes without any problem.

Here's a link of a screenshot I took on my Bluescreen Viewer report.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:BSOD about 5-10 minutes in "Page fault In nonpaged area"

I'm wondering if anyone could help me with this problem I'm having. The other day I installed a few microsoft security updates as per usual (I can't recall the exact names, I think they were mostly xp service updates). I shut my computer down and the next day booted it up, however once it went through the XP loading screen it got stuck. Before it got to the login screen with my username, it went to a black screen with only the mouse cursor. I left it loading for a number of hours but to no prevail, it just stayed on the black screen with the mouse cursor.

After reading several forums I chose to do a system repair using my installation disk. I installed and repaired the system and upon rebooting it went to the Installation welcome screen where it says "setup will complete in approximately 39 minutes". The only thing is this never changes. It stays on this with no change to the time, even after leaving it for hours. I've tried restarting it several times and taking out the CD but still get the same thing. I opened up the setupapi.log file hoping the problem was in there but it wasn't. Im guessing that it's a fault with my Video Card that won't make it progress as whenever I play games from a CD they always get stuck and freeze.

I don't particularly want to go pulling my computer apart, mainly because I don't know that much about the insides of computers. Could anyone please give me some suggestions as to what... Read more

I had a problem where Outlook could not use Word as an e-mail editor. From this board I found a solution, run Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll, and immediately I was able to use Word as my e-mail editor.

Immediately afterwards when I rebooted, Windows (not Outlook) began behaving in a strange manner. It would load my wallpaper, populate the launch pad with icons, populate the taskbar with the icons for Threat Fire and volume control. Then it pauses for two or three minutes. After that time the balance of the programs in my autostart, firewall-AV-battery backup, load and their icons display in the taskbar.

During the time it is "pausing" none of the icons respond by loading their program. After the two or three minute pause the program whose icon I clicked does load. Equally, clicking Start and a program does nothing until the end of the two or three minutes.

I will be grateful for any help.

Answer:6 "svchost.exe" running at once. dropping wireless connection every few minutes

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.

I have 6 right now.

You can see what services each svchost.exe process is controlling by running the following command from a command prompt:

tasklist /SVC

There's not much showing in your log that would explain your issue. You seem well protected.

We can run a couple of tools to help rule out malware as the cause,

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

Just an FYI...
In a few minutes after the 1.7 Upgrade (Full) completes, we received hundreds of "Reconnaissance using directory services enumeration" alerts.
I'm still researching, but so far it appears to be a false alert.
(Our FULL upgrade took just over 9 hours to complete.)
Sidenote:  Is there a way to mass-resolve the +500 alerts, besides manually?

I have on old slow CD-burner, it still works, but I wanted a faster one. So I got a new womper stomper fast one, I have both in the machine, intending to use the old burner more for a ROM now.

When I try burning an audio CD with the new burner, it burns successfully with no errors. But when you listen to the CD, the first 2 minutes of the first song are missing. The first track just starts playing in the middle of the first song. The tracks are still the same length, so then the second song starts halfway through the first track, etc. etc. Everything on the CD is shifted about 2 minutes, with 2 minutes of silence at the end of the CD.

I burned the playlist on my old slow burner, using the same software, and the CD works perfectly.

I am using Windows XP-Pro
Nero 5.5 (latest update)

Thinking perhaps it was something with that playlist, I tried a different playlist, and burned another coaster.

I tried burning at different speeds, burned more coasters.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the drive, burned another coaster.

I disabled Windows default burn settings, burned another coaster.

So I finally called Samsung (makers of the new drive) went through their tech support, and they decided it was a bad drive. So I sent that one back and they sent me a new one. The new one does the exact same thing.

So either they sent me another bad drive, or it's a software issue. I've already burned about 15 coasters trying different things, with no success. Any suggestions?

Here's my setup. I'm streaming DVD rips wirelessly from an external drive attached to my home server. The wifi is 802.11N (5ghz).

On some of my higher bitrate rips, I'm noticing that the video will stutter, or pause for a few seconds, then speed up to catch up where it really is. The audio stays constant. It seems like the hard drive is spinning down every 10 minutes and turning back on when it needs to play more of the movie. I know it spins down after idle but dont know after exactly how long.

What are some thoughts for this? Should I try and see if there's a way to extend the spin down time? Don't know if it's even possible. The server is windows 2003 server.

What about adjusting the buffer? I'm using WMP 11 and the K-lite codec pack.

Ideas? Thanks.

Answer:Streaming DVD rips, "stuttering" every 10 minutes? HDD spinning down?

As soon as I saw wireless, that's what I knew was the issue... it always is with streaming. Not much you can do about it except maybe trying to do a hardline, unfortunately. As for the hard drive spinning down, that would seem to be a nearly impossible cause as it's pulling data, and every time it pulls a bit from the drive that entire 10 min cycle (if that's the drive setting or how you have Windows set to power down the drives) will start over, constantly.

I'd point a finger dead on the wireless, especially as you stated it happens more on some of the higher bitrate rips - it's classic wireless connection issues, almost by definition.

Hi everyone

Well i have a small issue here. After a long research over the internet, i see that the only way to fix this, is to format disk or reinstall Windows. Well my computer is for company and i have many programs that will need to be reinstalled after a format or windows reinstallation, and this is a big problem. I recently tried to update "Nokia Multimedia Common Components". It suddenly stopped and said that it couldn't remove the old software, because Nokia Suit needed it. I click on "OK". Since then i have a pop up message, telling me that "A running service is trying to show me a message". Well the message is that it can't be installed. My problem is that i can't install other software because the current installation is running, looks like there is no way to stop this installation, delete this file, finish installation or just in some way put this program to background so i could install other programs or stop the annoying message.

If anyone can help me, i would really appreciate this.

Answer:"Interactive Services Detection" message pop up every 5 minutes

Have you tried uninstalling it? If that works then you can reinstall it.

If it won't let you, open msconfig and disable anything Nokia related in the Startup and Services tabs. For services, check the Hide all Microsoft services box first.

Reboot then uninstall it.

When I shut down or restart Windows XP, the "saving your settings" phase is taking 2 -3 minutes to complete. Is there any way to determine what is causing this?

Answer:"Saving your settings" hangs for 3 minutes when shutting down XP

After posting I ran across the link below and downloaded/installed "UPHClean-Setup.msi" which instantly corrected the problem. In fact the "saving your settings" interval has been reduced to approximately 1 second and the entire bootdown process to about 10 seconds.

You can use your system restore and go back to the time before you installed that software. From there you can see if the (m ) key will work then. You may want to create a restore point,if you intend to keep some of those app's.

I had this issue a few months ago, it disappeared and now it's starting up again. I work from home on the internet and it's a huge pain!

I have a HP windows 7. When I open my browser or I'm inactive for 10 or so minutes, my internet takes a few minutes to load a website, sometimes up to 5 minutes. I get blank pages and in the bottom left hand corner in chrome it reads, "sending request". It will be minutes before internet connects. I go to the bottom right hand corner of my computer to the internet access control panel and sometimes it will have a yellow triangle with a exclamation point. Sometimes it will say I'm connected, but that I have no internet access. Once I gain connectivity, I'm fine and the internet is fast and works well and then sometimes randomly it will disconnect again and I will have to wait a few minutes for it to regain access.

I have FIOS and I called Verizon thinking it was a problem on their end, and they sent me a new router. The new router hasn't made a difference. My boyfriend has a brand new Mac and has no issues with internet connectivity. So I guess it's something wrong on my end. Here is my IP config. Thank you in advance for any suggestions or help!

Hey, I'm doing a clean install of windows pro sp2 and During the GUI installation, While it say Installing devices and "Setup will complete in approximately: 34 Minutes" The screen goes black and it shows an ascii smiley face.
it then shows me a BSOD that says
I have tried all of my ram, and that's not the problem.

Please help me. I want to install windows, but i can't!

Answer:Installation of Pro SP2 hangs at 34 minutes "installing devices"

Hi heroman87

The smiley face and blank screen rather sound like Power Management and screen saver features. Is this a laptop computer? If so, wipe the drive & try the installation again: make sure to enter the Bios beforehand, and check on the Power Management functions - make sure that when plugged in by the AC adapter, no power management features are needed. Make sure to have the AC adapter plugged in during the installation also.

If you see that error again, write down the full error message and post it here.

If you are reinstalling because of malware infections, you might want to boot the computer with a bootable CD that has some antivirus tools on it, and make sure the computer's Bios - and any additional drives in the system - are free of infection. Bootable CDs such as the "Ultimate Boot CD" ( Linux-based --- ) and "Ultimate Boot CD For Windows" aka UBCD4Win (Bart's PE-based --- ) or perhaps a "Knoppix" disk (which is a Linux "Live CD" - runs entirely from the CD) work for this sort of thing.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hi All;

Please forgive me if I have missed the thread that is going to solve this problem, but I have literally spent this entire day trying to fix it, searching, reading, trying and then repeating the same routine dozens of times. Here is the deal.

As of this morning, my boot times went from about 30 seconds to 3-4 minutes. This is a fresh build (see specs below signature), not a lot installed here and most of the components are new and compatible from the research I have done. System has been up for about 4 days and has been running great. Last night, I had left the computer on (which I usually do not do) as there was 1.5 TB of files being transferred. This morning, it was all done, and I decided to do whatever "Windows Updates" I had not done yet. Did these and decided to give it a restart. As expected, shutdown and restart took a considerable amount of time as "Windows was being configured" with the updates. After that reboot, I checked for updates again, none available and I did another restart. This was my first experience of the 3-4 minute boot. I of course wanted to blame the updates I did, and consequently removed them all. It did not fix the issue. I went through many scenarios and options, and none have resolved the issue. I currently have two choices based on what I have tried and actually makes a difference:
Deal with a VERY long start up time (all runs fine once in Windows)
Get normal boot time, but deal with a delay once windo... Read more

Answer:3 minutes "Windows Starting" delay due to Autochk

Welcome to Sevenforums!

Long boot times after large file transfers are not uncommon. Usually it is Windows re-indexing the changes in the drives and ensuring there are no drive errors. Which is why the Autochk occurs. (This occurs during boot every time anyway, so disabling it is a bad idea)

As for removing the updates, that won't actually assist with the boot times, rather you will continue to fight them as they will re-install after each reboot (depending on your update settings).

Have you tried leaving it alone, then restarting again once the initial boot has finished?

Unless I am missing something that you have pointed out in your post?

My Vista Control Panel seems to have 2 big problems (the following 2 icons are blank and do not open) :

Windows 7 Home Premium

I would provide a screenshot (or three) however that is at the crux of my problem - I should perhaps say my current, with "7" (I am beginning to tire RAPIDLY of 7, much more quickly than I did with either XP, or Vista).

PROBLEM: When I attempt to "Save As" a document (Notepad, for instance), or even a Paint image, I get a window/page/screen/whatever, that has no "Buttons" ... no button to "Save", no button to "Cancel". Simply NO BUTTONS???

I had this problem the other night, and we "faked" or cheated our way through it, by using the Enter (Return?) Key to advance the cursor (cursor??) to where we wanted to be (well, we "hoped" we were "there", anyway, since we could not "see" what button or drop-down dialog box was selected or highlighted).

It's almost as if I had a "Resolution" problem, whereby the resolution is set too low (say, 800 x 600), things are too big to be seen/won't FIT on the page. However, my resolution is set to the "Recommended" 1366 x 768.

Please help...this Netbook would be a WHOLE LOT easier to throw against a wall than my desktops ever were . . .

Thanks in advance,
glenn . . .
PS, Hoping I was/am clear here...under the drop-down boxes of "File Name" and "Save as Type", there is nothing to select - not "Save" or "OK" or "Cancel" ... NOTHING????... Read more

Answer:No "Buttons" to "Save" or "Cancel" in Dialog Boxes WIN7

Type dpi into the Search box and choose "Make text smaller or larger" at the top of the search result list. In the window that opens see what it is set to. You want it at 100% rather than 125% or 150%. So if higher than 100% change it back to 100%. Hit Apply. You will need to reboot. See if that helps.

Hey there...I found a folder that I've never seen in my D partition before...I partition my hdd into 3 parts...C=OS installation...D=Programs and Games...E=Misc downloads and music and pr0n ...

Well I've never had a virus or anything in my D partition before...I just found this folder named "winnt" and it had some bat files and some kind of Airline JScript and something that looks like an airplane tracker...

Then in a folder named sdata (still in the winnt folder) there's files like 911, police, air, fire, etc...OMFG!!! This is like some terrorist thing or something...FBI is gonna find me and I'll never see the light of day again!!! I'll miss the [H] and I haven't even watched LOTR Extended Platinum Collectors DVD thing (the big ass package with those book holder things)...I haven't even completed Doom 3 or started playing HL2 or even had a chance to buy an X-Box and play Halo 2!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!! WTF is this crap on my computer??? I'm gonna delete this...I should delete it right??? Scans say it isn't a virus but what do they know...I'm screwed...

Answer:OMG!!! Found some folder with files like "911" "police" "air" and a airplane tracker!

if youre os is on C: there shouldn't be a winnt dir on d:, should be safe to delete it.

Please help review my HijackThis File. My computer has problems with "Redirected Searches", "Advertising Pop-Ups", "Fake Anti-Virus Pop-Ups".

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4
Scan saved at 11:46:28 PM, on 10/24/2010
Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16876)
Boot mode: Normal

Edit by chaslang: Inline HJT log removed. READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide sticky not followed.

Answer:"Redirected Searches", "Advertising Pop-Ups", "Fake Anti-Virus Pop-Ups"

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user... Read more

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Answer:Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme

Use Windows Style Builder to do that...

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Answer:BSOD every few hours: mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "c00021a" & "c0000135"

Welcome to the forum.

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).
Upload a screenshot using: CrystalDiskInfo For how to upload a screenshot or file, read here
Test your Hard Drive(s) by running: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Pay close attention to Part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors"
Test the RAM with Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

Monitor hardware temperature with system monitoring software like Speccy or HWMonitor. Upload a screen shot of the Summary tab as well:Piriform - Speccy

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Answer:BSOD - "Memory management", "Bad pool header", "ntoskrnl.exe"

Are you over-clocking? Is the bios set to its defaults? Is the SSD set on a SATA 3 port in AHCI mode?
