I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Whenever I open a program it asks what application id like to launch with

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

Hi,
When I double click -or select 'open'- HDD D: I get asked "Choose a program to open this file", with a list of programs displayed.

This happens only in my computer - opening it from within an app, or from the drop down list of the address bar works fine.

Now, 'explorer.exe' is not in the list, and also since the "always use the selected program..." option is grayed out, it doesn't help to manually navigate to explorer.exe & select it.

So how to associate D: with explorer.exe ?

Thanks in advance,

Trying to install MS Essential protection but to install it asks what program I want to associate it with. Every program I try to open asks "open with".. . . Internet explorer does this, MS works wont open etc etc. Is there a General program that should open anything? I cant seem to get this program installed to take care of any issues because it makes me associate everything with a specific one and my 2 general options are Windows explorer or windows media or open the tabs to see all other possibilities. Answer:attempting to run any program asks what do I want to open it with?

hrmmm....ok I have had this problem before..maybe not the same as yours? I never had it ask what to open with....I figured I lost a dll file or it was corrupt..so the application did not run...I tryed restore and it could not restore... I am not sure if you use a registery cleaner but I am sure that is where my problem started!!!   I did have my program disc for my o/s system (xp Pro) and this is what I did...it will verify then ask for your disc. So if you have your o/s disc you could try this. go to start>run and type the following command (NOTE: You must leave a space after sfc or it will not work):sfc /scannowClick ok and a progress bar will pop up. Let it run to completion and don't do anything else on the computer while it's running. Then reboot and see how things are running.this should repair lost system files on your o/s and it did wonders on my system... I actually got my restore back after running this!!!this is just a thought to try... It helped me!!  would welcome any feedback from other forum members!!!  Hope it helps!!!

Answer:can't open files, it asks what program.

Sounds like you've had a malware infection. Might be worth trying to start in safe mode (keep tapping F8 key before windows loads) and then choosing the system restore option (click the no box when given a choice). Choose a restore point from before the problem started - hopefully it will sort this. But if it is malware, it may have corrupted system restore (so either no restore points available or when it completes says it couldn't restore). In this case a fresh install of windows is the best option IMO.

Windows 7 asks me "open with" for every .exe i try to open.I had some sort of malware disguised as an antivirus program, I have dealt with a similar situation before but this time the malware would not allow me to open any program. AVG antivirus was already running so i was able to run a scan but it could not locate the malware. In safe mode, using the task manager i was able to identify the .exe file that was blocking my programs from opening. I deleted this file and the malware stopped popping up. From what I have read and understand the malware must have reset my registry and disassociated programs with file types. Currently every program i try to open it makes me find the program that should be used to open it. I would run a system restore but aparently you do not open "system restore" with the program "system restore", each time i get an error message with i try this. Is there a waty to fix this problem. Thank you.

Using Windows XP Service Pack 3It's an E-Machine brand computer, almost a year old.Well ok. I got all these viruses and got rid of them. Well then all of a sudden the Windows Antivirus bull crap that isn't even real was popping up so I looked up to get rid of it. I deleted the files and then I restarted the comp, when it came back up I would click on any icon, a game, internet, anything and it will ask me which program I want to open it with. I can't open anything! I believe that I deleted the wrong file or something, if someone could please help me out thanks.I know I could fix it if I could find my recovery disc but somehow I seem to have lost it  and so I can't do that...PS: I am on my old comp right now which can't handle my games  .

Answer:Asks me to choose a program to open file with for EVERYTHING!

How did you delete those files? If they are in the recycle bin you are in luck or if you used something like  "easy cleaner" which has an undo button that might work also. Otherwise look real hard for the restore disk.  Beyond that you need someone more knowledgeable than me.  LOL wannabe1

After I open it that way, I select my Drive, and then I find my files. But, I can't open my files. If I double click it, it just opens up the properties of the file. If I right click, it only gives me the option to Copy, Delete, Rename, and Properties.

I am having trouble using Internet Explorer to browse the web. When I start IE, it tries to load the homepage, but instead of loading the page, it asks where I want to save the file.

I have tried to stop loading the homepage before it gets to that point, and asked it to load other sites (Google, Yahoo, etc.). The result is always a save dialogue.

This is not an internet access issue because Safari and Firefox both work fine.

Other things I've tried:
- Tried to load a web page from Windows Explorer. Ended up with the same dialogue box.
- Tried to reset Internet Options through Control Panel. Can't even get Internet Options to open.
- Tried re-downloading IE8 and re-installing. Didn't fix the problem.
- Updated my virus protection software, and it removed some trojan horses. Restarted the computer, but the problem persists.

Computer information: MacBook Pro, with the latest OS X and all the software updates installed, running the latest version of Parallels Desktop for Mac, running Windows XP SP2 with the latest software updates, running Internet Explorer 8.

Hi,

I have recently bought a game using Games for Windows Liave.

As soon as I launch the game it crashes causing a computer restart. I just get a black screen, a blue screen of death containing the message "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and then the computer restarts.

Previously when I tried to run the game it complained about a lack of virtual memory. I set Windows to automatically manage page file sizes under virtual memory options and it seems to have solved this problem. I no longer get 'not enough virtual memory' errors.

This crash only happens with this application.

I have updated my graphics card drivers to the latest version but this did not solve the problem.

I have attached my Dxdiag.txt file giving information on my system and a zip archive of recent Minidump files produced by the BSOD crash.

I greatly appreciate any help you can give me in solving this problem. If you require any more information, post a reply and I'll get it for you as soon as possible.

Good day!

I am a bit irritated on the way they implemented the "start menu" / metro menu or whatever they call it.

I am used to just pressing the start button and then typing the name of the application I want and then pressing enter to launch it. Controls are the same now in windows 8 but I just feel... that its a bit sluggish because the search now leads you away from what you were working on... which is irritating me. As I do not really need a full screen change when all I want is to just search for a program and open it. Plus it is indeed sluggish than the old way... since what if you decide on cancelling out that search? -- then you need to press two buttons to get back to what you're doing.
... not to mention it breaks concentration.

What program or application can I use to just simplify this? I'd like to press a button, type the name of the application I want and then press enter to launch it without having to open that irritating metro screen.

What suggestions can you give me?

Answer:"quick search and launch a program" application

Also, when I try to open another application from my desktop icons or from my start up menu, it thinks and thinks and never opens. I can still work on the internet or anything that I may have open already. And the task manager does not list that those programs are running or trying to open.

I have PC tools Spyware Doctor also.

Answer:Changing open with default program to unknown application.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. You may have to restart your computer after completing the above steps.

You posted this in the wrong section by the way.

Hello all. I have myself a rather vexing issue going on with my operating system (XP x64 Edition SP2) that has me baffled, especially since it has survived an almost foolproof barrage of fixes.

Basically, I noticed very recently that one of my programs that requires an internet connection is unable to connect to the internet, despite having worked fine for almost 2 years now. I blew it off at first, and when I went back again to try it I had the same problem. I ended up downloading another, similar program, and had that problem again. I noticed after this, that some of my games (and other applications) that require an internet connection to update and the like, also are now unable to connect to the internet to perform their functions. Even one of my malware scanners, which requires that it is up to date before being able to run, could not update itself (I manually updated it).

Not sure if this is relevant, but my clock was reset by itself to July 1st 2005, and after I manually reset it, it didn't change itself back (yet).

So in a nutshell, I did some research and found one other guy with a similar problem to my own, which he identified as a worm in his WINDOWS registry. He didn't specify how he removed it.

I've since run my anti-virus software (BitDefender), CCleaner, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, and am currently scanning with SUPERAntiSpyware and I've had no luck. Malwarebytes discovered some potentially false positives ignored by Ad... Read more

Answer:Solved: Open Office is the default application

You can re-assign documents to a different program using two methods:

1. Control Panel, Default Programs, Set Associations. Select the file extension from the list e.g. .doc and select 'Change Program' and change it to Open Office.

2. Open Explorer, go to your Documents folder, right click a document file and select 'Open With' and then select 'Choose default program' and select the program you wish to open it with and tick the box 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.

You need to repeat the above steps for other file type such as .xls, .ppt, .mdb and so on.

Could someone please help me?

I am having problems whenever I leave my computer for more than a couple of hours. When I come back to it, it is sluggish or completely frozen and has to be rebooted. Then I am having trouble with only certain web sites running extremely slowly while most others run normally in IE7.

As for my computer, it is 2 1/2 years old.

It is a Gateway 3 GHz with 1 GB RAM, running XP Media Center. I also have an HP 3GHz with 2GB RAM with XP Media Center that I try to keep running for my husband, and a whole room full of ancient obsolete machines dating all the way back to windows 95. The HP is only 6 months old refurb.

The two are networked together with a Netgear wireless router using the wired ports and Cox broadband access.

They are firewalled behind the router and additionally, using Zone Alarm Pro. I am running the full suite of Zone Alarm security products including firewall virus protection and spyware removal tool on both. In addition I am running Webroot spyware removal tool on both and AOL spyware removal tool (which is due to expire soon.) All utilities run daily on both machines separately. Automatic updates for Windows is enabled on the HP because my husband can't be bothered with updates. On the Gateway I have the alerts enabled with the option to download and install windows updates at my discretion.

I would like to know what are the things I should be looking at that could be slowing the process so much. Is sp3 related? I'd rater not remove sp3 since all the applications were loaded after sp3 was installed, and I don't want to mess that up.

Thanks!

Hi, I recently got a virus by the name of XP Antivirus 2010 which pretended to be anitvirus software. I removed it using Super Antispyware. It has removed all problems so far except that when I click on any shortcut on my desktop or anywhere (e.g. Internet Explorer) it opens the 'Open With' window - "choose the program you want to use to open this file".

Additionally, I've searched various sites where they suggested fixing the associations for .exe files, but once the link has finished downloading, I get the same error message and cannot launch the program.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Solved: Error: Application not found, Open With

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Save the .reg file to your desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Reboot.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

Hi Will,

I think your computer may have become infected with malware (MS32DLL.dll.vbs) so I am going to redirect your thread to the Malware Forum, where the Authorized Malware Fighters will assist you. Please be patient - they are very busy and answer threads on a "first come first served" basis.

In the meantime you can start to work through the proces listed below, and if you are still experiencing problems, post up the files requested as shown.

-----------------------------------

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

Hi,
Recently i used this program called ADW Cleaner and long story short, on reboot it seemed to have screwed up my registries or something because i am unable to launch programs like Google Chrome, Steam, Skype etc.. from the desktop.
I am able to "Open file location" and then launch the program from there, But when i double click the icon on the desktop nothing happens, not even a loading bar, just absolutely nothing. I can open folders on the desktop but that's it. I have tried searching for hours on how to fix this but i cant understand what the problem could be. This is really frustrating and any help would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you.

I have a chiropractic buddy that is using an application called ReportMaster over his small (3 system) workgroup setup. The problem he is encountering is when this application is accessed over the network it opens very slowly and also closes very slowly. It is only happening on this one paticular desktop and no other applications act poorly.

He is using XP SP2 connecting to the (workgroup) network using a wireless usb adapter to a linksys router. (Keep in mind the wireless laptop has NO problem accessing the same app).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try pinging the router. What kind of conetion speeds are you getting? The other applications that he is running with out issue, are they over the network or local? What's the speed on the wireless USB adapter (1.1 or 2.0)?

I still use dial-up and when I try to open winamp it asks me to log on to my service and if I don't it closes the program altogether. Have tried to delete but get the cannot access file or file is in use. Also Mirc has been going through the motions of loading but just sits in the tray and runs the cpu to 100% as does process explorer.
I am attaching my hi-jack this log which by the way when I opened it to do a scan it displayed a box warning me that I was trying to run it through a removable disc and if I wanted to make any repairs I would need to install it, which of course it already is. ?
I have scanned with Superantispyware Malwarebytes, and tried Revo uninstaller all to no avail.

Perhaps you might see something suspicious in the log, oddly enough I hope you do..

Hello all I am new to the fourms and I seem to have an odd problem. My computer for some reason will not let me open any software or programs any more including the internet. Every time I click to open something it asks me what I want to open it with. I have seen this screen before when trying to open odd files such as .rar files. But now it asks me that on all software and programs. Is there a problem with the registry files? I have some but limited experience with this area of computers. I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions to try and fix this issue.

I have downloaded the most recent Hijackthis & have the log saved from todays scan.

So, when I set a default program in the Settings app and then open a file, Windows still asks which program I want to use. Admittedly, it does this only once per file type, but this is extremely annoying in a work environment where there are numerous computers.

For example, I went into the Settings app and set the .AU3 file extension to be opened in a specific program. Then, I double-clicked an .AU3 file, and I got this window:

It has the correct default in the above image, but it asks if I want to "keep using this app." Why? Can I make this stop? It's annoying.

Answer:Windows asks default program even after being set: disable this?

Please please please can someone help me......! I have got Vista and every time I log on it asks me to insert CD for virtual truck program. I believe it is something to do with an incorrect installation of my virgin media broadband but I can' find this program (or anything related to it on the start up program (if that it even the right place to look).

Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction, as I obviously have no clue as to what I'm doing!! x

Answer:Vista asks for Virtual Truck Program

In my opinion there must be a virtual truck program entry which tries to start this application every time after the booting.
Think you need to edit your ?msconfig? and remove the entry for it.

Furthermore check two places on the HDD;
- Start up folder delete Vtruck from there.
- HDD ->windows -> program files -> temp folder -> delete a file. There are maybe two called recover from reboot.exe

Good luck

I'm running Vista SP2 on a HP laptop with an Intel I3 processor.  I recently installed some Brother printer software and had to restart to finish.  After I logged back in, I got a message for every startup program saying the publisher could not be verified and did I really want to run the program.  This is happening for everything I try to run, including windows system files such as the control panel and its subelements.  The same problem occurs when opening a text or script file for editing.  I also cannot access "Help & Support", it just says files not found.

I've run a Norton's scan on the drive and then MalwareBytes Antimalware (free version).  MalwareBytes found 12 PUPs and 1 malware file.  I removed all of those, the PUPs were all related to Conduit which I had briefly install last year and uninstalled almost immediately.

One of my administrator account's desktop icons open as small icons stacked on the upper left side of the screen and cannot be moved or size changed.  In fact, I can't find the display Icon on the control panel.  It still is supposed to be there, is it not?

Answer:Vista never recognizes program publishers and asks if I want to run it.

Hello all,

Im in a 2003 native environment with XP Sp3 on all my hosts.

I am having a problem where a mapped network drive is asking for which program to use when opened. You can browse to explorer.exe to open it however the "Always use" option is greyed out. You can also right click on the drive in My Computer and select Explore however it will not open with a double click.

Not all users are affected.

I've done some research for this however have not turned up much. Any help with this is much appreciated.

Thanks
JR

I'm having the same problem - exactly as described by Jace. I had it once before with a SanDisk flash drive, which I reformatted and the problem went away. Obviously I don't want to reformat a network drive. Anyone have any ideas here??

Whenever I am fullscreen and try to use my shortcuts I made to start up other programs they don't work e.g Ctrl + Alt + p to open winamp while in fullscreen mode and it will not respond. As soon as I minimize or alt+tab it will work.

How can I get it to work while in full screen?

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows shortcuts wont open while in a fullscreen application

Which software did you use to make the shortcuts/macro?

When you are running a full screen application, such as a game, you usually want that application to take the keyboard input and not another application behind the scenes. The Windows key is the exception to this, although some keyboards come with an option to disable this, as many (mostly gamers it seems) do not want that functionality whilst playing a game (e.g., the game minimising when the key is accidentally pressed). Often, the same types of applications will keep the keyboard focus even when in Window Mode. The easiest way to achieve what you want, is to have a keyboard with programmable macro keys. There are keyboards with 50+ keys available just for running macros.

This means that custom shortcuts may not work. The ALT + TAB key combination may or may not work, as some applications that require keyboard focus might be preventing that combination from working, perhaps because those keys do something inside the application.

I've looked around quite a bit on both this forum and Google and can't seem to find an answer, so if this has been answered before, please forgive me and be so kind as to provide a link to a relevant topic.

I am using a TiddlyWiki stored on a USB flash drive. What I would like to do is set a parameter on the shortcut so that it always launches with a specific portable browser, also stored on the pen drive, rather than the defauly browser that is stored on the computer it is attached to.

Likewise, I have a few PDFs that I use regularly between machines, and would like to have them open using a portable PDF reader (Sumatra) which is also stored on the flash drive. That way, the PDF will always open to my last saved page, regardless of which machine I am using.

The computers I use are a home desktop PC (Win 7), home netbook (Win XP) and work laptop (Win XP).

If there is a different way to achieve this without using shortcut parameters, I would be more than happy to give it a whirl.

Cheers!
Matt

I am helping my niece out with her laptop..
She has a Windows 7 Toshiba Laptop.

I do not think she has a working antivirus installed. I know she used to have Norton but it is expired.. Now she can not get online to install one.

I have tried to put AVG free on my Flash drive & Transfer it over, but it does not work.. Neither does a Firefox install...

The main issue she is having is that when you click on anything it asks how you want to open it.. Even if you click on Internet explorer.. It will prompt you to click on a program.. If you click on IE, it will give you another pop up.. once you click on IE again, it closes it all out.

I am thinking she has a virus but I am unsure how to remove it since we can not get online..

Any suggestions? Please keep in mind everything has to be done via CD or Flashdrive.. Once I can get her online, I can direct her to this forum & directly click on a link.. She Does have wifi connection.. and it appears to be connected. so I know the internet is going TO her pc just not able to go any where..

This is a weird, weird problem. Every time I try to run a program from a shortcut on my desktop, I get a dialogue box asking me what I want to open the .exe with. If I right-click and choose run as administrator, this doesn't happen.

If I try and run a program from the Start Menu, this also happens, as does running the program from it's folder (not from a shortcut).

If I try and run system processes such as System Restore or netplwiz.exe, I get told "Application not found" unless I run as administrator. Normally I am good at fixing Windows errors, but I have never seen this before. I have no restore points.

Answer:*Major problem* - Asks me what I want to open an .exe with!

The problem I have is discussed at Microsoft HERE

I am only running SP1, and everything is running great, so I would like to avoid installing SP2 if at all possible. Does anyone know if there is a way to just download the specific fix for this problem, or another workaround that might work?

Answer:XP always asks to open file, regardless if box is checked

Pretty soon SP2 will be force fed to you as other security updates will not be able to be downloaded.

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
The SP2 installation will create a restore point if you have problems. Check for any other software issues that they list on their site prior to installing SP2.

Or you could call MS for details on how to get the hotfix.

I think I have two problems and not sure if they are related, but the combination has made my computer unworkable.

First came the google redirect problem. I have been afraid to try to address it without being walked through the correction steps.

On the last start up, avg detected a threat. Chose to neutralize it. After another restart, avg and intel proset wireless utility were no longer in the icon tray as before. Tried to open both of those from the start menu, and with each the "open with which program" dialog box popped up. Tried with a few other programs (i.e. firefox and explorer) and got the same results. I browsed through and found the program file for firefox so I could open it to get online to solve this problem. Once I clicked on it though the "open with" box, was almost like firefox did a short reinstall.

Currently running a malwarebytes scan to see what that turns up.

O/S is windows xp and normal antivirus is avg free 2011.

Thanks in advance for the help.

My friend uses Sopcast to watch sporting events. The way it should work is you click a link in your browser that looks like this: sop://broker.sopcast.com:3912/12345 and the right channel should open up in the Sopcast software.
They use Windows 7 and IE 9, but it only works right for them from the administrator's account.
From a normal user's account clicking the link in IE 9 would open up the link in a new tab (as normal) and launch the Sopcast software, but would not tune it to the right channel.
Under the administrator's account it did initially require 2 or 3 permissions, but as the regular user it doesn't even ask.
I tried changing the regular user account to an administrator and reinstalling the software by the new admin, but it still did not work and did not even pop the permissions.
Only lowering the UAC all the way to 0 made it work, but upping it again even one notch disabled things again. It never asked for any permissions, like it did under the other account.

I searched and found others with somewhat similar issues, but no direct solution.
I guess Windows 7 blocks it for the regular user, but how can I authorize it? Make it ask me?
Should it have been working or is it something generally blocked, on purpose?

Thanks in advance for any help or comments!

I have an installation that I built with InstallShield that launches an executable which requires some resource files as well as another program running in the background(MATLAB Component Runtime). When I install this on my Vista 64 machine and then launch the application it just hangs for 5 to 10 minutes. What I mean is that the application begins to launch, as I can see in the Task Manager, but then hangs around 14k. If I just let it keep running eventually 5 or 10 minutes later it will completely launch the app and its interface will pop-up and be active and run normally. If I call the executable(not installed) the program launches fine and everything works fine. Also, if I install the app on my desktop, i.e. not in ProgramFilesFolder, it runs without the delay. The only workaround I could find was to navigate to the installed .exe file and change its Privilege Level to "run program as an adminstrator". I've tried inserting manifests with different execution levels, but that didn't work. Anyone have any clues?

I have some applications that I like to run at specific priorities. For example i like running my voice recognition at higher than normal and background 3d renders at low. Is there a way to set this for each application at launch time so that I don't have to do it manually each time throught the task manager?

Answer:Possible to set application priority at launch?

Yes it is -
Create a text file in the directory where the the program (Programx.exe) lives, call it Programx.bat, Where Programx.exe is the actual name of your program. The file has one line of text in it - cmd/c start /High programx.exe.
Create a shortcut to Programx.bat and use that instead of a shortcut to the program itself.
Instead of high you can also use "Low", BelowNormal, AboveNormal or Realtime.
Realtime should only be used if you have a high spec machine with at least 512Mb of RAM.

I have a one-year-old VAIO desktop w/ XP Home (PCV-RZ22G). It was bought refurbished and had some problems that got me a new mainboard, floppy drive, TV tuner card, power supply and a few other misc. parts. It has run decently since repairs, but now refusues to open some applications. I click on them and sometimes they open after an unbelieveable delay or sometimes they dont open at all. Microsoft Works and Click to DVD are the main problems today, but there have been other programs that have given problems at other times. The stupid McAfee (MCAFFE IS HORRIBLY UNSTABLE AND OPERATES ERRATICALLY) is disabled so I hope it's not that. Why do applications sometimes refuse to launch please?

Answer:Application wont launch

Hiya

Lets see what you have running:

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite with Celeron processor that I bought 4 years ago. It has worked very well.

I was trying to get Japanese scripts for Word and downloaded one patch that started this problem and then the one that gave me the Japanese script but didn't solve the first problem.

So whenever I open word, the M-soft Office XP Pro installer comes up, starts to run, asks for the CD, I press cancel, it says "Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files. Check your connection to the network or the CD drive. For other potential solutions..." it mentions a setup.hlp file that has little worth for this problem.

The program works so this isn't a dire situation by any means.

SO, I have no way of getting my CDs as they're far away. A friend mentioned that reinstalling could solve it... but I don't have the CDs. The friend then mentioned doing something illegal BUT(I KNOW I KNOW before I wrote this the warning said specifically not to mention anything illegal, but...) I only wanted to bring it up to say that it sucks that I can't get my CD bc I paid for the program however long ago and don't want to have to do anything risky you know?

Especially not because the program works, it just sucks having to wait for the shenanigans every time.

Thanks for any help and let me know if I shouldn't have even mentioned mentioning the word illegal bc I'll change my post.

Thanks so much,
emmett

Hello kal1,I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/160918/netscape-mail-now-says-aolcom-cannot-get-mail/ Because you have this log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. As so often with these "Why does Windows do this, why is Microsoft forcing me to do that" complaints, your post is totally groundless and is based on user's inability to understand simple instructions. I guess your next complaint will be about "Sorry, but I want to use a mail app, not an account creator. For god's sake, I do have a mailbox across the street and it doesn't ask me to open an account to allow me to mail a letter".

It is true that some users have either poor eyesight, not being able to see clear and easy to understand text in prompts and buttons various Windows apps show to them, or issues to understand simple instructions. In case of Calendar app the same page that asks users to add their accounts also has a button saying Ready to go. It should not be too demanding task to understand what it means: add your accounts or not, when you are ready just click that button!

A local user, not adding any accounts. Click Ready to go... Read more

I am running XP Pro on a laptop loaded with programs and files.
When I recently started it up, instead of loading with the familiar
Compaq logo, it started in a DOS program (Phoenix BIOS) with a warning
that "it had not been shut down correctly last time."

I think I did shut it down correctly last time. The BIOS offered me two
options. 1) Hit F1 to Boot or 2) Hit F10 to continue. I hit F10. That took me to a screen where I had to guess what to choose. Did I want
to Save and Exit? Did I want to Escape and abandon changes? etc.
I didn't know what to do but it seems I had not made any changes so
I said "abandon changes and boot."

Well, that was not good. Why do they do this to people with no warning
that this BIOS thing could appear leaving you with nothing but guesses.

After I restarted, the warning said something like "warning-your date and time are not correct go to control panel to reset the date/time.

Then when I opened my Outlook, the draft email I had created the night before was GONE and the Word doc I had saved was GONE. Then I went
into Internet Explorer and MY HISTORY of all the sites I had visited WAS GONE. !

Can I get my History restored to my browser? How?
Can I recover/find the missing email draft and Word doc?

Worse, this BIOS thing has come to stay. Has not gone away. Two more
times on startup, it appeared again. Same behaviors all over again. I keep selecting "discard changes and boot." But my History bar in my brow... Read more

Answer:When starting up in XP, a Phoenix BIOS DOS program opens & asks F1 or F10 to continue

Hello and Welcome to TSG.

Sounds like the battery on the motherboard has died (this is not to be confused with the laptop's battery). It's the reason why the bios losing its settings (and date/time) when the laptop is off.

But this wouldn't affect the history in IE, unless maybe the date was really off and IE deleted the history (it's usually set to delete websites that haven't been accessed in 30 days).

I'm positive of the first paragraph. The second one, I question myself. Hopefully someone with more knowledge then me will also respond.

Forgive, but I am pretty new to using win7 (about a week or two), but do possess good general knowledge. Last night, I tried to launch an application (World of Warcraft Launcher). Nothing happened, no error message at all. Was trying from it's Task Bar icon, tried it from a desktop shortcut, even navigated to it in Explorer and tried directly launching it. Double click and nothing happens. I could launch the game itself, so was able to participate in my Guild's raid (which seems to indicate Windows was working). Asked there and was told look in the event log.

Ha, it seems that several utility type applications that I can't really find I CAN find via the Help system and launch them from there, but that's another issue. Anyway, scour as I could in the Event Viewer, I simply could NOT find any kind of entry pertaining to what I was trying to do, launch an application (btw, this application worked just fine earlier in the day).

So today, just out of habit, I tried to launch it and low and behold, it now does launch.

Can anyone shed any light on why and how this can happen?

Answer:Application Doesn't Launch/Event Log

Hi Riverside,
I'd be wary of where you got W7 Ultimate,(1/2 weeks usage!!!) its the most pirated OS.
Now if its a pirated copy, its Likely that the media was corrupt in some way, could possibly be the cause.

I am trying to install Solid Edge ST onto my computer via a DVD. When I put the DVD in, most of the time windows stops responding, but sometimes I get through. When I try to autorun the program, so I can install it, I get the error message E:\ Launch.exe is not a valid win32 application.

I am also not the first person to use this disk. Two people before me have installed it without problem

What do I need to do so I can install this program?

Answer:E:\ Launch.exe is not a valid win32 application

Sounds like the autorun is not working.
Right click on the dvd icon and choose explore.
Navigate to the install program and double click on it.

Hello,
I am having this issue with DPC Watchdog Violation each and every time I load Minecraft.
The application attempts to load, but then the machine locks up, mouse freezes, sound freezes etc.

After a few minutes, I get BSOD'd and receive the DPC_Watchdog_Violation error. The computer then finishes the dump, but sits on a blank screen. It does not reboot without manual intervention.

This is my setup and what I have done so far to troubleshoot
I am running an XFX Radeon HD 6950, with 3 monitors, using Eyefinity (Similar to spanning across all 3)
I have tried it with and without eyefinity enabled. This does not appear to be the issue. For the purposes of the dump, eyefinity was disabled.

I have updated the drivers on my Corsair Force XT SSD to the latest firmware update (5.xx)
I have updated the drivers on my XFX Radeon HD 6950 with drivers directly from the AMD Website (XFX does not appear to supply drivers and/or I just cant find a drivers page on their site)
I have Updated to the latest Java x64 Build. (Minecraft is a Java Application)
Other Applications/Games do not appear to cause BSODs, but I'm guessing that is only because they are calling different functions.

Attached Below is my W7Forums Dump. I assume that this works for W8 as well as I was directed to the utility from the W8Forums Sticky. Thanks for looking

Answer:DPC Watchdog Violation on Application Launch

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a proble... Read more

I have been experiencing a delay when attempting to launch ANY application. When I attempt to run a program from the quick-launch, start menu or desktop shortcut, there is a delay of 5-15 seconds before the hard disk even starts spinning up. Once the hard drive light begins flashing, the application loads very quickly.

I have run SpyDoctor (pctools) and TrendMicro and both have given me a clean bill of health. I have attempted several of the solutions to similar problems posted here in your forums but nothing seems to make a difference.

This is occuring on my desktop AND my laptop. The odd thing is that my wife shares the laptop and her user account operates perfectly fine—the same physical machine but a different user.

I have compared all the services/processes and we both seem to be running the same things.

I am completely stumped and can't seem to find ANYTHING on the web that begins to shed any light. Here is my HIjack log from my laptop (where I'm currently sitting):

When I use a hotkey I've assigned to launch an application (e.g., Ctrl-Alt-E to launch Internet Explorer), it sometimes takes 5 - 40 seconds for that app. to launch. Why is this? Hotkeys are for making program loading FASTER, not slower! Sheesh. When I click on an icon to launch the program, it loads instantly.

I'm pretty sure there is a delay parameter for hotkeys somewhere down in the registry but after scouring the net, I still can't find it.

My system: Windows 2000, 2 GHz Athlon, 512 MB RAM.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I cannot reproduce your issue. Launching applications will play the sound specified in "Open Program" on Windows 7 for me.
