Solved: Acer aspire 4520 Sticky key and cant change BIOS boot order.. Need Help..

Question: Solved: Acer aspire 4520 Sticky key and cant change BIOS boot order.. Need Help..

This is my problem..

I am curantly working on a Acer aspire 4520. The problem with this computer is that it has sticky keys, first i thought it was the keyboard so i plunged in a usb keyboard and still had the same problems, keys don't react fast, when i turn caps lock on it turns it off and vise versa, when i use the mouse to click something it selects everything on my desktop and opens it all at once.

So i thought it might be a bad OS, so i decide to preform a reinstall of windows vista but when i go to the BIOS it wont let me change the boot order, when i press the keys to chang the order it just makes a beep.

so i went back and did more research and found that some other people are having the same problem and they told me to do i BIOS flash, but that did nothing.. this is the website..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi dear!

I got an old computer that I used for perhaps one year ago, and what I did to destroy it was to delete the language pack somehow. Now I would like to try to fix it, as I actually need it. But I do have some issues, maybe someone of you guys know. I can start it up all the way to where I choose between safe mode, and so on - then I get the blue screen that lasts the whole 2 seconds, amazingly enough.

I have Windows 7 Installation, that's all I have. When I start up my PC also says two fix the problem:
1 Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2 Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3 Click "Repair your computer".

Had this been as simple as the system claims, I would have been fixing it myself asap. The problem is that when I put the CD, restart the pc is also nothing happens. So I've searched up a bit, where you can do so in a way pc starts via cd so I can install windows 7 The problem is when I enter the BIOS I can choose between "Information, Main, Security, Boot and Exit ". When I go to BOOT it says "Boot priority order" and that's the list:
1 IDE0 WD
2 IDE1: PIONNER DVD-RW
3 USB FDD:
4 Network Boot: LEGACY PCI DEVICE
5 USB HDD
6 USB CD / DVD ROM:

I can not do anything here, no matter what I press. It's sort of gray text, what I can do about is completely black. So it turns out that they are locked. What should I do ..

Have also tried ALT + F10, the Acer eRecov... Read more

This is the first time I've seen a computer with a boot order that can't be changed. It's a rebuilt Dell E520. When I go to the bios, it lists about 7 changes that can't be made, and one is the boot order. It boots the HD first and the CD/Rom second. period! So is there some other way I can run the Reinstallation CD so I can repair whatever it is that's making this machine seem like it's got the FengXing Infection? Thanks, Bahb

Question: Acer Aspire 4520

I've had this laptop for 1 year and 8 months. My mom was checking her e-mail at the time and it just shut off on her. We tried to on it again and Windows Error Recovery screen would come up and when I tried to push enter it'd shut off and make a sound at the end. If we try it again it won't even go that far it'll just shut off after a few seconds. I had my dad look at it and he said he can't figure out what the problem is because it shuts off too fast. He thinks it might be the hard drive but isn't sure. I took a video here that will hopefully help.

Question: Acer Aspire 4520

Hey guys ive had my laptop for about a year now and its great but i would like to upgrade the ram to 4 gig. Im not sure what pin it is or whats the best one i should get could someone help me. Also I dont have a recovery disk so i was thinking about just getting windows vista professional and starting clean again can i do that on this laptop?

Answer:Acer Aspire 4520

Laptop RAM is 200 pins in the case of DDR/DDR2, and 204 pins in the case of DDR3. Get a respectable brand like Corsair, G.Skill, OCZ. Also make sure to get the same speed as your current RAM.
You should check the thing's manual for the maximum amount of RAM you can have in it (I wasn't able to find that information anywhere), it could be less than 4GB.

And yes, you can install Vista over the current operating system if you so wish. Why do you want to, though?

It came with Windows Vista installed. Now, whenever I play facebook apps/games which require flash player,or even my virtual world of kaneva, it shuts off after about 5 minutes. First, the game completely freezes up,and then wham, shuts off my entire laptop. I have very limited income,so I cannot afford expensive software to repair the problem, let alone,a software that can search my laptop and find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all,

I am new to this thread and hope you can help.

I have done an upgrade on my Aspire 4520 from Vista to Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Everything has worked well accept two problems I cannot seem to correct.

1. I can't find my "Coprocessor" Driver

2. Once I did a fresh install Bios and Windows 7 don't recognize my DVD-RW rom.

When in Bios, the driver will open and close, but it is not recognized past that, and I can't locate it anywhere in Windows.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Justin

1-co-processor may be fixed by a BIOS upgrade. Make sure you have a backup before you upgrade it.

2-What dvd drive?

3- System specs please

Well, I got it fixed. Not sure how, it's practically the same step I've tried a billion times the past 15 hours.

Anywho, I disabled & removed my High Definition Audio Controller, uninstalled what version of the Realtek drivers I had installed via the Add/Remove programs, then installed this driver here:

Most likeley, your wirless card needs to be replaced.  Sometimes you can get lucky by removing the wirless card, restarting the computer, then shutting down the computer and physically reinstalling the card again.  In most cases, when you cannot control a wireless card's ability to turn on an off, it usually means the wifi card is a dud. In your case, removing/replacing the card on the 4520 is pretty easy compared to most machines.  Watch this youtube video from the :18 second mark through the first 30 seconds.  That's all the time it took for the person disassembling the laptop to remove the card.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yucUQbEiNXg Also note, it looks like in most cases, the 4520 machine came with a full size b/g mini pci wifi card.  I believe the s/n is T60H976.  I would recommend throwing in just about any Atheros half size mini pci wireless card with wireless N capabilities (huge performance increase for a minimal amount of cost, assuming your router supports wireless N).  Just keep in mind if you throw in a half size card, you will also need to get a half size bracket extension so that the half size card can fit the full size slot on your computer.  It can all easily be done with about $10-$20 in parts on ebay, and will give your computer much better wireless performance.  I recommend going with another Atheros card because sometimes manufacturues will not whitelist or recognize other manufacturer card... First of all, backup your current OS with Macrium Reflect or similar tool, create a recovery disk to recover the backup.http://www.macrium.com/webtutorial/tutorial.aspThen go to microsoft site to download the tool and create installation media(DVD or USB), upgrade your current system and see whether you like it, if it gives you too many problems or you don't like it, you can always go back to your previous OS with your backup.https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

I have acer aspire 4520, with win XP installed. After reinstalling the windows the audio is not working, i have installed the realtek audio driver(Audio_Realtek_5.10.0.5423_XP) but their is no symbol of audio in system tray and no sound eighter in speakers or from external source (eg: heads).
Installed the driver numerous times also after uninstalling the (Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio) but still same problem, all the other functions are working properly. ?

Answer:Audio problem in acer aspire 4520.

Have you installed Service Pack 3 for XP? It updates the Microsoft UAA driver and you need to do that before installing the Realtek drivers.

You can also try installing the drivers from the Realtek site: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
Use this one: "Windows 2000, Windows XP/2003(32/64 bits) Driver only (Executable file)"

Someone asked me to install Windows XP on this Laptop for them. I never boote to Vista, and I doubt they use it before giving it to me.

So I install XP Professional and performed all the driver installs and updates all the way up to SP3. The laptop has an issue where the main speakers don't produce sound, just external speakers and headphones.

Someone even advised me to do a clean install and Leave it at SP2 , still the same issue.

Could this be speaker hardware failure? I didn't get any "error installing realtek" messages the whole time.

Another thing is, in the Device Manager -> System Devices , "system speaker" says no drivers are loaded for this device.

Any help, as always is much appreciated guys!

This unit is running Vista Home Premium, has an AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor, 768MB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7000M/ nForce 610M chipset. A friend brought it to me to have a look at. Apparently he had somebody else reinstall Vista on it and they left all the drivers off.
I was able to get the drivers and install them but I'm having a problem with the following:
1. Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
2. High Definition Audio Controller
3. Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller

These three devices give me this error: "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)"
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times, also updated the bios to the latest version but no success. I'm really interested in getting the audio going. Is there a workaround for this situation? Thanks for all suggestions.

Ok, this is a laptop that I had to install Windows XP Professional edition onto. It has issues where sometimes, when the system is left on , it will turn off the monitor/screensaver and not respond when someone comes back to it, requiring a restart.

Also, sometimes the restart will power it on, but it will hang on a black screen.

The last issue is that sometimes, the screen will "warp" into several vertical lines , and stop responding. Any thing i can do that may be causing this?

This is the same laptop , where the speakers refused to work, if anyone remembers that.

Thanks everyone.

Answer:Acer Aspire 4520 Internet Connection Problem

frampton26,

If the notebook is connecting to other networks we know that the issue is not with the hardware, it sounds like a software setting or an environmental issue with your network at home. If you haven't, I would suggest resetting your router or checking the firmware version to make sure there are not any new compatibility issues.

I have read many of the posts here on this subject. I have Googled and read many inputs on how to solve this problem. None of these have worked for me.
Here are some of my system specs:

Dell Inspiron 17R 5721
OS Name Microsoft Windows 8 Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3517U CPU @ 1.90GHz, 2401 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical
BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A03, 10/24/2012
SMBIOS Version 2.7
Embedded Controller Version 1.01
BIOS Mode UEFI

Secure Boot State On

Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 G

As so many others have written, I can't change the boot-up order which means at this time, I can only boot from the hard disk.
I am hopeful that it is my ignorance that prevents me from accessing and changing the order, and that some good hearted soul will set my down the right path.

Thanks
James

Hi all,
I have an old Dell laptop that is currently running Windows XP, but I'd like to install Linux on it. So I went into the BIOS, revision A14, and got to the page that changes boot order, so I can boot from CD. It says to use the right and left arrow keys to change it, but they don't do anything. So I am stuck with having to boot from floppy which I can't do for unrelated reasons. Any ideas on why I can't change this? The keyboard works fine, I can change other settings, just not this. Or am I totally missing something? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I've got a Acer Aspire 4520 notebook, that serves me very well.

just upgraded from 7 32bit to 7 64bit, all going smooth,

Except my co processor and a few other bits and peices aren't installed.. im missing the chipset driver... easy you say? download install it. well i wish...

Acer being useless as they are their 64bit win7 ultimate driver doesn't work. complains that it wasn't designed for the os its currently running on, it was apparently designed for windows vista. some vista drivers do work on 7 but not this one, ive even run it in compatibility mode, no success. the driver that doesn't work is located here

Code:
http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/Chipset/Chipset_NVIDIA_13.11_W7x64_A.zip?acerid=633990342487895794&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire%204520&OS=701&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=AAP_9
I need to get this installed because with no drivers it keeps blue screening feeding bad data to kernel etc.... which is understandable.

By searching google theres every driver available for the Aspire 4520 except the chipset.... has anyone else got this laptop or over come this problem?

its driving me mental that every time i get the computer doing multiple tasks i get a blue screen.

please help, there must be some way. why would they release every driver but that one?

I'm Sean from America. My cousin's Acer Aspire 4520, on which he installed windows 7, will not see the disk drive for any reason what-so-ever.He asked me what the problem was and I figured his driver was corrupt, but I took a look and it was just fine. If you have any idea what it could be, let me know.

Answer:acer aspire 4520 laptop Disk Drive problem

Doing a generic google search of the laptop has not revealed any common problems with windows 7, are you installing 32 or 64 bit? And did you perform an upgrade or a clean install?AlsoDoes the drive appear in device manager, does the computer display the disk drive in my computer/computer management and does the computer display any signs of activity/changes when a disk is insertedThis should help give us a better idea of what might be going on!

I have a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 motherboard MA785GM-USTH. I have tried several times to set the BIOS to boot first from a cd/dvd. It does not change the boot order. I continues to boot from my hard drive. I want to boot from a UBUNTU CD and I can't. Can someone help?

Answer:My Gigabyte BIOS won't change the boot order

My short answer here to this, is that it sounds like your BIOS needs a swift kick in the pants! Maybe the BIOS just needs a jump start, maybe to get things back on track. This is just a real quick little fix, if it works.

1. Remove the computer from power, unplug the power cord from the power supply.

2. Take the side panel off your computer case, exposing the guts of the machine.

3. Look for the motherboard, then look for a small shiny chrome colored battery.

4. Remove that chrome colored battery off the motherboard.

5. With the battery removed, take your hand and press the (power) button on the front of the case.

6. Keep that button depressed and or pushed for approx. 30 to 40 seconds, while your computer BIOS is drained of it's power and hopefully it's current setting.

7. Let off the (power) button, replace the chrome battery back onto the motherboard, replace the side panel of the case and reconnect the computer power cord to the back of the power supply.

Now turn on your computer and see if that helped take care of some things! Again, this is just one of those quick fixes that may or may not always work.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,

My PC is running Windows 7. In the past I never had an issue running memtest from my CD. I would put the CD into the PC, restart the PC, press a certain key (I think) and Memtest would load.

Unfortunately I forgot what key I used to press and Memtest won't load, it goes straight to the Windows Startup Screen and the Desktop loads.

I went into Bios and I saw that CD/DVD was not #1 in the boot order which is strange because I used to run memtest many times on this PC and I never changed the Boot order.

I tried changing the boot order by hitting the + key but the key won't do anything. Is there some other key that I need to press in order to get + or - working?

also I see two CD/DVD's in the boot order of the Bios, I guess it's because I have two CD/DVD drives? Which one do I make #1? The Memtest disc is in the bottom CD/DVD drive.

Any help is much appreciated

Answer:Can't change boot order in Bios to run Memtest

Usually Memtest starts automatically without any key presses if your CD/DVD drive is 1st device.

What brand and model motherboard are you using? Usually it tells you at the bottom of the screen in the BIOS what keys you have to press to navigate through the menus. The manual probably explains it in great detail, but I know, who reads those things?

We aren't going to be able to tell you which drive is which, you will just have to try trial and error with at most 2 restarts.

My dv6 has a shattered LCD screen, but works otherwise.  I'd like to get into the BIOS and change the boot order so that I can boot from CD/DVD or USB. When the computer boots and I press F10, computer goes into the BIOS setup but I cannot read the screen and navigate the menus. Any suggestions? If someone can see their BIOS screen, could you tell me which keys to press, in order, to reset the boot order and/or to set CD/DVD and USB to boot before HDD? Many thanks in advance,-Craig-

Hi there, I hope this is the right forum for this question.

My son has an i7 custom build computer and the previous owner gummed the computer up good with malware etc. The current setup is Windows 8, but our goal is to install a fresh copy of windows 7 Professional 64-bit which we have purchased "intended for distribution with a refurbished PC".

This is a bit of a project for us, so we are taking our time with it, and hopefully learning something along the way.

We are trying to wipe the HDD completely on the machine, but we are unable to run DBAN to do so, because every time we restart the machine it keeps booting up in Windows instead of DBAN. I have gone into BIOS and changed the order of the BOOT to read from the CD-ROM followed by the USB before the C Drive (I have copies of DBAN on both USB drive and CD-ROM). But it is still not booting. Not sure what to do???

Cheers,

Sean

Answer:can't boot DBAN trying to change boot order in BIOS not working

It is possible you have not created a bootable CD/USB. Use Rufus for example. https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Also provide motherboard make/model please.

I am trying to delete all the files from an old HP (XH545) laptop running XP. Its screen doesn't work, so I have it attached to a remote monitor. I have both a bootable floppy and bootable cd which have [email protected] Kill Disk. My intention is to boot one or the other and erase everything on the hard drive.

Problem: I am unable to get into my BIOS to change the boot order. Since I have to do a Fn-F5 to switch over to the monitor, I am unable to get there in time to see when to hit F2 to edit my BIOS. I have been trying for several hours to "guess" when to hit it, still with no success. I'm not even sure I would be able to see the BIOS screen anyway - maybe you have to get past that for Fn-F5 to swap out to the monitor.

If I let the system boot normally, I can swap over in time to see it loading Windows XP.

Question 1: Is there any way to change the boot order from within Windows (or from DOS prompts)?

Question 2: Lacking a positive answer to #1, is there any other way to delete all the files from the hard drive so I can dispose of the laptop?

Thanks!

Answer:How to change boot order w/o boot-up BIOS edit?

When you hit the power switch of your laptop at same time start pressing f2 and keep hitting it until you get in BIOS. After getting in BIOS I you know what to do.

Hello,
I have a Lenovo laptop that is about 4 years old. It was working fine earlier today but when I picked it up to turn it on it was powered down and the message came up saying BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. I tried to restart and enter the bios to change the boot order so I could boot from my windows 7 usb to repair the problem with the command prompt but it would not let me into the BIOS. I tried burning a windows 7 Disc to try that but again it won't boot from the cd/dvd either. I know how to fix the problem but I cannot access the bios to change the settings. What could that problem be caused by? Is the mother board gone? I have seen other posts similar to this but everyone seems to pay attention to the windows part and not answer why they can't access the BIOS. I have tried all the keys, F2, F8, F12, F10, ESC, Del. Normally the F2 key works for entering the bios and the F12 is for changing the boot order on my machine. Please help with this BIOS problem and ignore the Windows BOOTMGR problem.

Thank you

I was dual booting Windows 8.1 Update and Ubnutu 14.04 From the windows disk manager I deleted all Ubuntu partitions and rebooted my notebook. I was immediatlly present with the grub rescue promt. Normally this is a quick and easy fix, by booting a windows USB/CD and repairing the windows MBR.  My problem is I can't access the bios or the boot menu to change the boot order. Nothing I've tried has let me get into the bios to set my USB stick as the first boot option.  Using the small recovery key button on the side of the notebook which normally boots the notebook to the screen where you can choose which drive to boot does the same as the power button. There is no bios flash screen or abililty to press any keys before getting to the grub screen.  I've drained the battery and left over night hoping this would reset the state it seems to be stuck in but that also did nothing.  Here is a short video showing what happens when I boot the notebook http://youtu.be/2FpC2Deuawk

Have a Lenovo H420 desktop that was upgraded about 2 months ago. We backed up everything and want to reinstall Windows 7.

But I can find no way to get into the Setup screen. I've gone to Settings, Update & Security, Advanced Startup and Restart Now. But I have no option to Use a Device. If I choose Troubleshoot then Advanced Options, the subsequent screen has no option for UEFI Firmware Settings.

I've disabled Fast Boot through Power Options in the Control Panel, then tried F2 and the Delete key when starting. Nothing...

The fact that I can't do something that was so easy in Windows 7 is enough reason in itself to remove 10. Throw in the fact that the scanner part of my printer no longer works is just icing on the cake. I have the Windows 7 disk. I just can't figure out how to use it.

I've got a Windows 7 upgrade disc, so I first installed Windows XP and now need to boot from this new disc. Because I'm going from 32-bit XP to 64-bit Windows 7, I have to boot from the disc.

I can press F12 to get into the boot order selection screen; but pressing the arrow keys, escape, or enter has no effect. Once I'm on that screen, I just have to turn off the PC because I can't do anything else.

Both keyboards I've tried have been USB. I actually bought a new keyboard in case my keyboard was the issue, but the stores only had USB keyboards--if USB is the issue, I'll have to wait a few days before I can borrow an old keyboard that uses PS2.

Is there any way to workaround this using the USB keyboard I have?

The only thing I can do is to hit F11 to enter bios with limited functions where I can't modify anything.

How can I get rid of this problem?

Hello reader/answerer of my questions,
I am having some trouble with my 750 ODN's bios. This bios was an official update (3.6) from the support centre, and almost everything has been fine since (the plot thickens!). I decided one day I wanted to dual boot with linux, in particular Fedora (this is not related to it though).

But, when I burned the disc and tried to live boot (too test it out) I found that the boot order was set to hard drive first! I rebooted and pressed f12 - didn't work.
I tried delete and escape - neither worked. I then tried all the f keys - none of them worked.
Every time it took me to Windows boot menu, and I explored that and I couldn't find anything.

It's also worth mentioning I am running Win 7 SP1.
I tried both PLoP and osloader (too boot from the dvd) - neither worked.
I also can't remember what the key to start the bios was originally - oops!

Also the toshiba logo with instructions never appears.
I would really just like too change the boot order though, the rest of the bios I don't need access too right now.

A separate issue is that Windows randomly decides it wants to check my hard drive, which takes ages, and it won't give up until it gets to check it. I think it may need some medical help.

But, any help, from a qualified doctor or not, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Mitchell

Answer:Satellite L750 BIOS trouble - cannot change boot order

Hi

> I also can't remember what the key to start the bios was originally - oops!

Pressing F2 while powering up the unit would help you to access the BIOS.
But you don?t need to change the booting order within the BIOS. You can do that by pressing F12. This should be done immediately after you have powered up the notebook.
Then the boot menu would appear and you could choose the right boot device.

Does it functions?

Answer:Acer Aspire E13 BIOS & Won't boot from USB

Hi kingrollo.

You didn't say how you created the USB key. I always recommend you use Microsoft's Media Creation tool to create key.

Could I recommend you retry with this process, insert key and access boot menu.

Sounds like your device has a password set on BIOS. Is this a corporate device, did someone do this for you?

I'm pretty sure Secure Boot has to be set to Disabled.

May have to get manual and see how to remove BIOS password, I assume when you try to change it prompts you, could be wrong, have been before.

I'm trying to dual boot Vista and XP (on my old computer ), but I need to make it so that XP automatically boots my default. (Right now Vista boots by default) I think I remember some dialog in Vista, but I don't remember where it was.

Answer:Solved: Change boot order (as in, partitions)

Unfortunately, Vista isn't as user friendly when it comes to editing the boot.ini file in order to allow which selection you want to be the default. You actually can go into the boot.ini file for Windows XP, which can be found by enabling Hidden Files and Folders and Protected OS Files under the Folder Options Menu, and then changing the option for like you would want it.

I've included an example one for reference purposes:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /noexecute=optout
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista" /noexecute

You would change number for the partition that starts with default in the above example to the partition that you want it to default to on the boot screen. I would also recommend changing the timeout to something like 60 seconds in case you have concerns and want to change your mind.

At start up when I try to access the Boot device using F12, it either ignors it or freezes up. It does the same when I try to access setup with F2. Hello!

I have also tried to F8 to Repair Computer option, but I do not get Repair Computer as an option. I'm stumped! When I restart it, it gives me the option to run in Safe Mode, if I do that it gets hung up on file: amdagp.sys. If I start normally it gets stuck on the Windows start screen. Help!!

Answer:Acer Aspire One won't boot, can't flast bios!

F8 is to access Safe Mode, Alt-F10 is used to access the Acer Recovery partition. See this link on the Acer website. I'm not sure why you were trying to flash the BIOS as that most likely wouldn't fix your boot problem.

I have just come across a serious issue with my 4 year old Acer Aspire 5536 (I know its old but i like it and it still performs). Anyway when pressing the power button the fan speeds up the lights come on but the computer will not start.

To get my computer to start I need to power on the computer and cover the fan vent for about 10 mins and restart and after i have done that it will run perfectly.

Does anybody have any ideas? I would prefer to fix the issue rather than buy a new laptop

Jason

Answer:Acer Aspire 5536 Bios Won't Boot

You have to cover the fan vent to get it to start ? One of the problems with laptops not starting or overheating is dust clogging up the internal CPU fan causing it to stop and thus overheat and shut down the system which CPUs are designed to do, so I am surprised that by covering the fan vent this allows the laptop to start or am I not understanding your problem ?

I update my aspier es1-521 note book to bios 1.07 (B5W1E107.exe). After boot it shows "no bootable device" warning. I did change the boot method to legacy which kind of fix the not booting problem. But now touchpad buttons are not working. How can I change it to UEFI or even downgrade the bios ?

Hey Guys,

I've recently installed Windows 7 Professional on my Windows XP machine. It's installed on a partition of the same drive that XP was on.

At the boot menu when it lets you choose between the 2 OS's, it's defaulted to the Windows 7 one, and I can only get to XP if I manually choose it. I want to keep XP as the default option, but I don't appear to be able to change it (I did this before with Windows 7 RC1 without any problems)

When I got to msconfig and look at the boot configuration in Windows 7, it only shows Windows 7 as the default option. There is no other option, Windows XP doesn't show up there where it should

It's the same when I look at the boot config on XP, there's no sign of Windows 7 there!

Anyone any ideas how I can sort this out? I need to add XP to the list

Thanks

Answer:Solved: Trying to change boot order (Dual Booting)

Ok guys looks like I sorted it -

There's a great program called EasyBCD which showed both of the OS's and allowed me to sort it all out!

Hi
I have a Asus laptop with windows 7. I’m trying to reformat the hard drive. I know I have to start the computer from the CD drive with a copy of windows 7.
I’m having a problem getting the “boot” bios to change the order of starting up.
The screen has the following:
UEFI Boot [Disabled]
PXE ROM [Disabled]

Boot Options Priorities
Boot Option #1 [PO: WDC WD6400BEVT …]
Boot Option #2 [P1: SlimtypeDVD A …]

Hard Drive BBS Priorities
CD/DVD/ Rom Drive BBS Priorities
>Delete Boot Option

I tried to use the +/- keys as per instructions to change the order under “ Hard Drive BBS Priorities”, but nothing happens.
I don’t know what the rest of the stuff means.
I’m not that smart with computers. I figure hands on is the best way to learn.

Hello Everyone.

I have an Acer Asprire 7540 which wil not boot any further than the bios.

I can enter the bios and change settings but once this is done all I get is a black screen.

I have changed the boot up sequence to CD in order that I can reformat or re-load the recovery disc, but this has no joy - still black screen after the save and exit.

The problem started after a reboot. I had previously been downloading a torrent before the re-boot. No warnings from an up to date AV.

Hope you can help.

Mike

My laptop won't boot after I changed the video configuration settings in the bios. Any time I turn on the laptop it just makes a clicking noise & switches itself back off so I cannot change the settings back.
I have tried to reset the cmos battery but I have been unable to remove the keyboard to get to it.
is there a way I can get my laptop working again?

Answer:Acer Aspire 5750 Won't Boot After Changes in Bios Settings

With your receipt, take laptop to any busines-oriented computer store [for example I've used Altex in AustinTX], let them fix the problem for you. Once, they've fixed your laptop, make changes in video configurations in Windows OS, after making external media backups of your OS partition.

I'm trying to run Memtest86+ and have an image on DVD which I'm trying to boot from.

I restart and change boot priority, save and exit and the machine still boots to the HDD.

The Mobo uses "Click BIOS II" V 1.0.107.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks,

MK

I was able to change the boot order by moving the desired boot device to the first position at the top of the screen, double clicking on it and a menu pops up, then selecting the appropriate device. It then reboots to that device. Not very intuitive but... it worked.

Hello Mr. Magus and welcome to TSF!

Firstly I would like to say have you installed any drivers for your laptop since the windows 7 install? I believe this is your problem or at least part of it.

Having a look around i see that your laptop does not have any Windows 7 drivers. I guess you never ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Prior to switching OS. as there are no drivers i can only suggest reverting back to Vista as your laptop only has drivers for Vista,XP.

Thanks,
Altie

All,

I have a very interesting problem.
I bought an Acer Aspire M3920 Desktop without any OS installed.
M3920 has the followig spec:
Acer Aspire M3920 Desktop - Desktops | Ebuyer.com

Next I install Windows 7 x64 Home Premium Edition on the machine. This is an original OEM Edition of Windows 7.
After the install of the basic OS you try to shutdown the desktop and it will not.
It will go as far as showing the shutdown screen with the rotating circle.
The circle freezes and nothing else.
Even after installing all the Acer drivers still the same problem, but with the difference that when you shutdown you will see the shutdown screen and then the screen goes blank but the desktop does not switch off. Only the 5 second hold on the power button switches the machine off.

Now I install Windows 7 32bit Home Premium Edition on the machine. Again only the basic OS without any specific drivers.
Success, the desktop performs a normal shutdown as expected.

BIOS settings are the same between both install's.

I do know that the M3920 uses an EFI BIOS instead of the normal BIOS. I do not know if this might have something to do with it.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Raoul.

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 7 x64 on Acer Aspire M3920 with EFI BIOS does not shutdown..

Any Computer with 4 gigs or more of ram is usually a 64 bit system. Your PC is a 32 bit system which is the reason why it works under 32 bit.

Generally, a computer's bit count indicates how much data it can process, the speed with which it can process the data, and the maximum memory capacity. In order to optimize the computer's performance, the bit count of the operating system that is installed on the computer should match the bit count of the computer itself.
Click Start button
Type system in the Start Search box, and then click system in the Programs list.
The operating system is displayed as follows:
For a 64-bit version operating system: 64-bit Operating System appears for the System type under System.
For a 32-bit version operating system: 32-bit Operating System appears for the System type under System.

Hi

Despite some experience in computers, I have made a silly mistake and updated my friend's Acer Aspire 1410 15.4" laptop with the wrong BIOS!

From ftp://ftp.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_1410/bios/ I have used Phoenix Phlash to update 3A08 (ATI Graphic).zip INSTEAD of 3A06 (Intel Graphic).zip (I foolishly looked at 08 instead of 06 assuming it was more up to date rather than checking the Graphics Chipset.)

I believe there should be a way of flashing using a Boot Disk? When I hold FN + ESC when turning on the unit I get 1 long then 2 short beeps which repeats ad infinitum. I believe this means there is at least some hope of re-flashing using this method as the unit does NOT beep when holding any other keys.

When I DO use the FN + ESC, there is no flashing of my USB pen which leads me to believe it is not even reading the flash pen.

According to the readme.txt file

***
1.Winflash Version:
Download the attach file and unzipped it.
Please put .WPH file into Winflash utility to flash BIOS

2. DOS Version:
1: Create a bootable disk.
2: Extract the ZIP file to this bootable disk
3: Insert the bootable disk into your system, then boot.
4: Run P.bat to execute
***

How can I boot, though when the screen is black? The CD tray will spin a CD and the HDD is accessed too
Any ideas?

Thanks for any help

Good day Sirs,
I recently updated an ACER aspire 1800 BIOS (used the 1.17 update). The update was carried out from within Windows XP and after it completed the system was rebooted.
The system started with thick white vertical bars and black horizontal bars making it difficult to read or see what's on the screen properly.
From my search on the Net, it seems I should have used the 2.7 BIOS update instead.
Someone (spock028) managed to update his BIOS with the correct version despite not being able to see what's on the screen.
http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/603868-acer-aspire-1800-a.html

I have created the Phoenix Crises Recovery disk (using a 80GB USB HDD, I created a 4GB partition, set it active and used this partition). I renamed the BIOS file to BIOS.WPH.
I managed to enable the option F12 (select boot device)

Unfortunately, since after I press F12 during boot and the boot option screen comes up, I can't see the options because the screen is garbled, I find it difficult to boot from the USB HDD)
I also tried the auto-option (pressing Fn+Esx, Fn+B, Winkey+B) during boot but that didn't work.

I am assuming the USB HDD is on the list that pops up.
I have tried an external monitor and the display is garbled as well.

Please can someone kindly give me the exact set of keys to press after pressing F12 when the boot option screen comes up to select the option to boot from the USB HDD?)

I have included an autoexec.bat file on the HDD that should run the f... Read more

Answer:Can't change BIOS order

You need to update the boot file location.

I use rEFInd not grub so (from Windows Administrator command prompt) I run this whenever Windows resets it which it does on occasion.
Code:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\refind\refind_x64.efi

You probably want to do something like this (again from windows command prompt).
Code:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

If you can't remember or don't know where you installed grub (or what the name is) then mount the ESP and have a look - your loader will be in the EFI directory somewhere.

Hey everyone,

I've been having this quite annoying problem for a few weeks now...more like a set of problems actually...

Basically over the last few months the laptop's become steadily rubbisher...it's been getting slower and the CPU doesn't seem to be able to take as much as it once could. E.g. just being on webcam on gchat will just slow the entire laptop down to the extent that the video becomes super-lagged! It won't run many processes simultaneously any more, and it's pretty annoying.

I'm running a dual core AMD Turion RM-72 processor, 2.1GHz, with 4 gig DDR2 RAM, and an ATI Radeon HD3200 Gfx card.

So the major problem here is that when I turn off the laptop, even if it's just to restart after installation of something, it just won't turn back on. It turns off fine, seems to be no problem with that, but when it boots up again, it will just turn off when it gets to the Starting Windows screen (I'm running Windows 7, btw). When I leave it off for a good fifteen odd minutes, then and then only can I restart the laptop, and it seems to just about get to windows by the skin of it's teeth...

I don't feel any cool or hot air coming out of the vents at the bottom, which I think means that my fan's probably clogged up, and although I sit the laptop on a usb cooling fan, it doesn't seem to be enough- would it be worth cleaning the fan out with compressed air or something...could that be the solution to my boot problem? Running SpeedFan without knowing anything about... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Acer Aspire 5535 Shuts Down on Boot

Hello Nitish and welcome to TSF,

Are you still in warranty? If so, call Acer to set up RMA.

First order of business... Clean out that fan. You should feel some air movement from the rear exhaust vent. That would explain the app crash for games, and possibly the restart issue as well.

If your computer is out of warranty I would suggest opening it up and manually cleaning it out. If it is completely clogged, canned air won't do anything.

I am having trouble finding documentation for your computer.

Second order of business...
Download and run the hard drive manufacturers diagnostic from the link in my signature. If there is an option, make sure you download the DOS utility and burn it to disc.

When you pull apart your laptop, check the label on the HDD for the manufacturer.

So I have this Acer Aspire M1201 and its been acting weird lately. I turned it off one night fine and the next day i turned it on and the blue light on top did not come on, but the system powered up, the hard disk spun up and the cd drive light was flashing non stop. So I reseated the ram, and then the processor, and then I reset the bios by removing the cmos battery and then I tore the entire thing apart down to the motherboard and rebuilt it all. Stoping and testing it as I was connecting parts to see if there was a part inside that was causing the issue. But there was nothing still. I thought it was done for, and I left it alone while I ate lunch. And when I came back to it, it was booted! I restarted the machine and it booted again and again over and over perfectly. I thought the problem worked itself out. But after turning it off and leaving it over night again, I had the same problem in the morning. I turned it on and left it on for 20 minutes and watched it and it ran with blinking lights on the front with no power light for a while. After about 10 minutes the power light came on, and then another 10 minutes went by and the computer restarted itself and loaded the bios and booted normally. So I thought I could make this work by waiting on it, but not today, now its been on for an hour and no boot or post or anything.
What in the heck is wrong with it??

Hello, my new Acer Aspire Notebook has my IE homepage stuck to global.acer.com and I can't change it through any of the IE options (Use Blank, Use Current, or typing it in manually - I'm trying to set it to Google).

I went to this page to solve the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q320159 (Home page setting changes unexpectedly, or you cannot change your home page setting).

As per Microsoft's instructions, I tried changing the "Start Page" value in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main," but I got the following error: "Cannot edit Start Page: Error writing the value's new contents." There was no "Default_Page_URL" entry in there.

I was able to change the "Default_Page_URL" value to "Google.com" under "HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main" and the "Start Page" value in there was already set to "http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&clcid={SUB_CLSID}&pver={SUB_PVER}&ar=home"

The "Default_Page_URL" and "Start Page" entries don't exist in the "HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main" key.

Lastly, the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel" subkey doesn't exist either.

I would appreciate any help you could give me, thanks!

Hi
I have some encounted an error (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME) and I need to reinstall my Win XP. I only have Win XP Cd. But my computer doesnt seem to detect the cd that is in CD-ROW.
I have tried to change the BIOS order. This is what I did to change it. (P.S. I am not sure if I am really changing the boot order or not, that is why I listed out the steps that I have done)
- Press "Del" to Setup
- Go to "BOOT"
- Then see a list like this:
1. Removable Device [legacy floppy]
2. IDE Hard Drive [WDC WD400BB-00DEA07]
3. ATAPI CD-ROW [ARTEC WRA-WA48]
4. Other Boot Device [INT18 Device (Network)]
- Change ATAPI CD-ROW to the top of the list.
-Restarted computer

Result: My computer didn't recongize there is a CD in CD-ROW......
Please help. Thanks~
P.S. I dont have the SIX Win XP start up disks, and I'm not able to get that thing in short peroid of time. Thus, using CD disk is the only way I have to reinstall Win XP.

Aspire 4520.. click for specs

just want a lil bit advice...
which is better? windows7 32-bit or 64-bit?
i have heard certain issues about 64-bit cant support several hardware..
especially graphic card..

Answer:Aspire 4520 32-bit or 64-bit

For that particular laptop, if it were me, I would stay with 32 bit.
If you do decide to go with the 64 bit you will need to upgrade it to 4 GB ram if you don't have that already.
In fact, I wouldn't even put Win 7 on it. Why spend the money? Keep the XP that came with it.
There is not, to my thinking, enough benefit to justify the cost.

I have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly.

Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there!)

When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.... that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.

There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.

I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning.

There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
