Preferred Solution: only starts up after i run the the bios memory harddrive test diagnostics

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running Windows Xp SP3, 3 gig of Ram and am having an issue with my Gigabyte Motherboard, model number 81945P-G-RH and my BIOS version is F4.

I have recently noticed an issue on my bios post screen, when my PC is started the PC does the memory test, where it should say

Memory Test: XXXXXXX (x = amount of RAM)

all i see on my screen is

Memory T

I can not see the test being undertaken, after about 2 and a half minutes the memory test will complete at which point i can see the full words Memory Test and how much memory was tested as well as my master and slave drives listed.

I CAN NOT skip the memory test by pressing space bar or esc, i can only enter the bios via the delete button and i only enter the bios once the memory test has completed.

I can still run windows normally but i do not like that i am having to do a memory test everytime i start my PC. I would like to point out while in XP, the same amount of RAM shown when the test completes is consistant with what is shown in the "My Computer" properties.

I have tried all versions of my bios but still it is doing the memory test. I would appreciate any help in getting this fixed. I have not been able to find away to disable the memory test in the BIOS.

I hope you get back to me at your earliest convenience, thanks.

HELP!!! The bios freezes at the memory test (MEMORY T.....FREEZE). A couple weeks ago, I pulled the RAM out and changed slots, no difference put it back in the original slot and it went fine. It's gone for good this time. Is this a simple fix and how to would be muchly appreciated. :approve:

Answer:Bios Freeze At Memory Test

Well.... try going into your bios settings and 1st check to make sure your ram is recognized correctly there...(correct MB showing)

if possible load fail safe options or set memory timeing to SPD or AUTO if you have the options in your bios to do so.

otherwise i would recommend trying a different stick of ram in that box.

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

from what i can understand about this problem it likely is hardware related, bad memory. needs

Hi, for you information, i've installed the latest bios and embedded controller version on my 1866-6SU. since i replaced the original HDD with a mtron ssd, and windows runs perfectly fast), i'm annoyed about a thing, that's obviously some kind of bug.  the bios is taking aboubt 15-20 sec or so till the windows logo seems, there is some kind of extended memory test running (pressing ESC shows it). EMT is deactivated in bios, of course. changing the parameter changes nothing. so i think there's the problem.i've got 512 onboard and 1024 ram (..with Lenovo FRU) extra installed. what's the reason?  you may also read about it in a german TP forum. (post 14,15,20) Another thing, i'd appreciate to deactivate the scanning for the free fall sensor, since i don't need it with the SSD. this also takes 3-4 seconds. The 2010 is annoying,to. but i can live with that. i'd be happy to hear from you. if you need some extra information, please tell me. thank you! Johannes M. Hi all,

I think I have a problem with my nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX.
I was watching a dvd on my computer when suddenly strange artifacts started to appear, and then the whole computer froze up (but the sound kept playing). I switched my computer off.

Now when I start up my computer, strange lines and dots appear on the XP loading screen, and when the desktop should appear, I get white/black/blue bands across the screen, and I can't see the desktop at all.

I can start up in safe mode with no problems.

I tried to install updated drivers but I get an error message saying "The nVidia control panel could not be installed...the most recent driver will be restored". It has now rolled me back to driver version (dated February 2007).

I have also tried cleaning and resetting the card. I am certain it is not a heat issue, as the hottest it gets is 85 degrees (only on very hot days and when I'm playing the latest games) and the original crash occured while I wasn't playing a game, but watching a dvd. I have not overclocked my card.

I'm assuming the issue is most likely a hardware problem and is either my graphics card or my motherboard. Can anyone recommend diagnostic utilities/tests that I can run to isolate exactly where the problem is occuring?

The computer was bought from Dell just over 2 years ago, and I have not installed or removed any hardware since getting the computer.

Answer:Diagnostics to test 8800GTX and motherboard?

sounds like it might be time to replace the video card... could be faulty vram. artifacts typically mean two things... overheating or faulty video memory. anything above 70c is pretty hot, even for a 8800GT but i wouldn't be surprised if it was the onboard ram. uninstall the drivers from the add/remove programs menu and then run Driver Sweeper to clean up the files. restart the computer and try to install the latest WHQL drivers from and restart again. if you still experience strange artifacts or other performance issues, replace the card.

i don't think you would get any video at all if the motherboard was the culprit, so start with the video card. as far as diagnostics tools go... you can't really isolate and hardware related issues through software. best thing to do is just trial and error.

I am hoping someone had the SAME problem with their test bed

I built a Dual Boot 98/xp pro machine from an older system, loaded with memory and the best I had laying around the shop

I wanted it mainly for testing customers drives who we assumed were dead, or needed diagnostics , but couldn't get Windows to come up or boot

I loaded this machine with ONE 40g HD and then I put ina ZIP, Floppy, CDRW and a DVD. Like I said, I usually just test drives

All of a sudden, for the past three months, I've been screwing with this as it acts up every day and I would just as soon scrap it and start brand new, but I thought someone who is familiar with test beds, may have had the same problem

lets make things easy and forget about whats hooked to what. I now have Primary IDE1 cable hooked to dual boot HD

I have IDE2 just hanging thru a slot in the tower case, waiting for a hard drive to come along. By right, I always used this slot for testing hard drives and it would never affect or ask to load drivers or screw up my dual boot

Now, I am lucky if it boots itself, it will NOT shut down by Start button or holding in the power button for 15 seconds. You will hear a click and it will get quiet, but as soon as you let up, it starts rebooting again, same with the mouse and START button shutdown

To further the INTERMITTENT problems, I have ONE test 6gb HD that I use to test and ONE 2.5" laptop drive with a HD converter. If I put either one of these to IDE2, the computer will ... Read more

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows/drivers/software on the new hdd. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Battery calibration:

Reason why is because it has less than 15% free space, right now it has 1 GB free of 8 GB, now when going into the drive it's of course the recovery drive and says if removing anything in the drive, recovery will be impossible, now I have no problem with my drive having that little space, however I like my diagnostics to be perfect so is there any way to clean out some recovery files? It's recycle bin is empty and thats all disk cleanup does, and while I'm here on my C: drive theres an invisible recycle bin with all the crap I've ever downloaded on this computer in what I'm guess a extremely small file type for the use of recovery, however since I had over 50GB worth of 100 KB or less files deleted (I do modifications and graphical add-ons for video games) it makes up a good 30 minutes of my virus scans, so is there a way to delete those without harming my computer?

Hello all,

I know I had a malware infection, but I used Malware bytes and "quaranteened" the infected files, but now windows will not start and goes immediately to a screen that gives me three options.

Test Memory
Test System

All tests have been ran and complete with no errors, but when I select exit, the computer reboots and goes right back into the screen with the three options.

I have made a repair/recovery disk, but system repair just spins continuously and will not finish. I have left it for one week now and it is stuck.

I have ran the sic and chkdsk routines with no help. I have even went into the boot directory to /remove the mending message, but still no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I recently started having problems with my internal hard drive. It is just over 1 year old, a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 5400rpm, 8MB cache.. While trying to extract a few zips, I started getting an I/O Device Error message. I ran a CHKDSK and fixed all the bad sectors. However, even after running the checkdisk, I am still getting errors in the ThinkVantage Diagnostic Tool. I have a T60p, model 8743-CTO. Running Windows 7 with 2x1GB RAM. Here are the hard drive errors I found with the diagnostics tool. FAILED: Targeted Read Test - Error Code WHD20-P5VError while reading sector 6033483899 FAILED: Surface Scan Test - 2: Error Code WHD08-HMVThere were over 10 sectors with errors Is my hard drive really failing? Like I said, its a WD Scorpio Blue that I bought just over a year ago, I think they should last longer than a year. Any thoughts?

Answer:T60p Hard Drive Errors in Diagnostics Test

Bad sectors and failed HD tests point to a harddrive-failure, yes. Granted, it should last longer than a year, but that also depends on the usage. If the laptop has been moved around extensively, and perhaps doesn't have a properly working ADS (not sure if the T60 has that, but I'm assuming it does), the drive might have experienced trauma that have rendered it less than perfect. Or, you might just have a bad drive - they pop up from time to time. A harddrive is a mechanical device, spinning platters and moving read-heads, which might damage the drive if htye're off by only a fraction of a millimeter - so it's probably safe to say that the drive is heading for the graveyard. If the drive hasn't been exposed to excessive force, rapid movement, the laptop falling while the drive is working, or any other form of laptop trauma, you should be able to get a new drive from the seller.

Answer:Dell diagnostics produced Error 2000-0142 during self test for HDD.

It is likely that the hard drive failed and it will need to be replaced and Windows reinstalled on the notebook.  If the system is under warranty contact Dell technical support in the US and request that the hard drive be replaced and if you don't have restore media, request restore media.
If you are in the US I can help you directly, and I will be sending you a friendship request.  In the meantime please reply with the model of notebook, and what version of Windows that you have installed.

Question: bios diagnostics

set bios to diagnostics from quick start, cant change back. Help!

Answer:bios diagnostics

Hi, pfb1
To clarify: Do you mean that you changed the Boot Mode in your system from "Quick" to "Diagnostics?" If this is the case, why can you not switch back? Do you change the setting and the mode persists regardless, or do you find yourself unable to enter the BIOS?

I ran a memory diagnostic test. When it's finished and began auto restart, it said something very quickly that I couldn't read, but I did catch something that said thermal shutdown? And it did NOT restart. So i let it cool off (it was hot!) and reran the test again, and it lets me log on the way it was supposed to do with the program popping up on the desktop, but there was no log to view, only the original interface. Where do i get this test info? I'm a pain in the rear I know, but I really need to fix this.?

did a Dell PC Diagnostic results where targeted read test failed WHD20-U75 and smart short selftest WHD16BH2 What does this mean just had a new harddrive put in about a month ago

Answer:harddrive test failed need help

It means the drive is faulty, though you may have to test it with the drive maker's own diagnostics software before they'll agree to replace it. Contact them for an RMA (Returned Merchandise Authorisation). You've just been unlucky. Even with new hard drives, a percentage of them leave the factory in a faulty condition. Either that or the person who installed it for you has mis-handled it or dropped it.

After a round of Windows updates, I went to turn on my laptop and recieved the "Primary internal battery (601)" error.  After this screen, however, Windows would not load.  I have tried taking the battery out and 'draining the charge',  and starting up the computer plugged directly to AC with no battery.  Windows still does not load.  The start-up test in the diagnostics menu said the battery needed calibration, however when I go to run the battery test, it gets to "waiting for battery to charge" and exits out of the test without giving me any results at all.  Currently when turning on the computer I no longer get the "primary internal battery" error, it just goes directly to a black screen with blinking cursor.  Any help is appreciated, I'm completely at a loss here!

I have recently been having random blue screens of death and i downloaded the Windows memory diagnostic tool, ran the diagnostics tool ( and a few things happened:
1- It threw up a message before the scan saying then memory map could not work with 4gb or something like that (i only have 4gb installed on my system) however it gave me the option to continue with the scan anyways.
First question, is this normal?
2- I continued with the scan and left it overnight for 8 hours, the first half hour i watched what was going on and it kept flagging FAILED messages on every single pass, there wasnt a single SUCCEEDED message which seemed extremely bizarre. I woke up in the morning and the scan was still going on past 64 passes.
Second question: Surely if my pc works most of the time then something would have passed and not just flagged everything as FAILED?!
Third question: How many passes does windows go through, i left the pc on over 8 hours and from what i read the memory scan should only take a few hours...

Thanks for help

I personally prefer Memtest86+ for RAM tests

You should also test each stick of memory separately (preferably overnight if not errors) and NO errors are permitted.

Not sure if this is really the right place for this but I was directed to Technet from the Support Community. No forum/category seems more appropriate.
The problem computer is a Lenovo G510 notebook, with a 1TB disc and maybe 8GB memory. It was updated to W10 about a year ago. I was starting to have problems with it before the upgrade, but mem diags, Seagate disc diags, Lenovo diags, chkdks, etc have all
indicated no problems other than 1 bad block on the disc.
I tried to run memory diagnostics from the restart now option. This had worked in the past. I kicked off the restart, and the system entered the diagnostics program on power-up as expected. The problem is that it just keeps on looping through the test over
and over. It never exits. ESC just pauses the diagnostics, it does not stop them. Any entry just restarts the test. No combination of keystrokes during the test or at power-up have resulted in stopping the diagnostics. The test window is full screen so I can't
see away of bringing up another function to end the diagnostics. Can anyone suggest a way to exit the diagnostics and continue to Windows?

thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, running W10 Pro x64 on a desktop with i7 5820k.

When I try to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic, I initiate the action and restart the computer.

However, during boot when it gets to the point where it is ready to run the Memory Diagnostic it gives me a message that the Memory Diagnostic (memtest.exe) is not installed, and it needs the memtest.efi file on the installation disk.

Unfortunately, when I try to run the Memory Diagnostic with the Windows System Desk in the tray, it does not give me an option to install memtest.efi. I'd install it manually, but I cannot understand how to get from memtest.efi to memtest.exe.

I have googled this, but it is not directly addressed anywhere, except for a few places recommending a Windows reinstall, which is not practical for me.

Any suggestions as to how to solve this will be appreciated.

The first problem I had was I got a blue screen one day while playing a game and my computer just restarted.  The blue screen didn't stay up long enough for me to read anything on it.  I turned the computer back on, it got into Windows then went blue screen again and restarted itself again.  I tried loading in safe mode and my current antivirus (Avast) said it was missing a file to run a scan.  After a little time (in safe mode) got the blue screen again and the computer again quickly restarted itself. The computer's a Dell, still under warranty so I called them and they had me run this massive diagnostics tool built in there and it found there to be no errors.  After that they had me restore the computer to factory settings and now I can use it again; except still no antivirus program will work at all.I think it's a virus in that it causes every antivirus software I try to install (Avast, Avira and McAfee so far) to not be able to run at all.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling them many times and they all have various error messages saying files cannot be found to run them. The other aspect to the problem is that from the glimpses I did catch from the blue screen message I read MEMORY_MANAGEMENT so I googled that and it seems to be connected to memory failure of one kind or another.  I figured out how to run the build in Windows Vista Memory Diagnostics tool and it said there was definitely a problem with the memory... Answer:No antivirus scans can run, memory diagnostics failed.

You probably do have a virus stopping the scanners from running. I recommend running a scan with Housecall by Trend Micro This will run a virus scan from within your web browser and shouldn't be blocked by a virus (Though it can in some cases be blocked)Also try running a scan in Safe Mode - Just using your normal antivirusHope This Helps,Cameron Gray

I run diagnostics which gave me a Hardware Failure Replace Memory error and the recommended next steps below:

Your memory module is not working correctly and should be replaced. This part is covered by your warranty. Please fill out the following form and we will ship your free replacement part to you. Note: Warranty details can be viewed by entering your Service Tag on the Dell Support homepage or on the My Products and Services page.

Funny thing is the system still seems to work even though diagnostic says it is a critical error, so do I need to replace the 2 x 4Gb memory? My Inspiron Zino HD 400 support warranty has expired but is the memory still covered by manufacturers Lifetime warranty? If so as online search on memory suggests then how do I make a claim?

I've got a doozy of a problem going on here:

I've got a Vista Ultimate x64 installation. I wanted to check on my memory usage (I have 4 GB, and set my BIOS to recognize all four gigs), so I decided to schedule Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to run on an immediate restart. It looks like I'm not detecting any problems with my RAM, but the test always runs the number of passes I specify (2 by default, but any other number as well) and then RESETS back to 1 of X passes complete and overall test status of 0%.

I'm unable to exit the test to boot normally by hitting ESC (it does nothing; just resets test progress to zero and option defaults).

I've tried a system restore after accessing my boot options by hitting F8 and booting from my Ultimate DVD; it seems that the problem is mdsched.exe got set to run the test on start-up, and since I'm never able to exit the test, mdsched.exe runs during boot up every time.

I basically don't know how I can get past this Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool. Can anyone please, please help me?

Upgraded to Windows 10 (from Windows 7) after ignoring the constant encouragement to upgrade for quite sometime. It was fine for quite some time (weeks/months). Yesterday, after a restart, the blue tiled screen with the "Choose An Option" menu came up. You can "Test Memory", "Test System" or "Exit". The problem is that when you do any of these options, it just keeps cycling back to this "Choose An Option" screen.

I have a Dell Inspiron 570 (older machine). I've gotten it to go to the BIOS Setu Utility by pressing F2 (constantly as it cycles). I have the DVD/CD in the drive, but it seems to be disabled?

I'm stuck and would appreciate any help at all...please.

Trying to help a friend whose laptop we think has been damaged by virus Exploit.Drop.G... Tried everything I could think of and then decided as a last resort to run the Roadkil wipe disc. This was successful and I thought I would be able to reinstall Vista from the support disc but I keep getting the error stated above. The laptop is a Toshiba Equium A210-1VO (model number PSAF5E-001005KS).

I did notice once before when using this laptop that the CD/DVD couldn't read DVD's I tried all the advice removing upper and lower filters etc, but was unable to resolve this problem (this was pre virus). When I boot to system utilities it does recognise HDD as Hitachi-(S1), Optical Disk Drive: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D, and is saying total memory 2048 MB System BIOS version 1.60.

Totally stuck now, any advice/help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Equium A210 starts with Error - PXE-E61 Media test failure

In my opinion for some reason HDD is not recognized as bootable device.
Start notebook and press F12 several times to enter boot options.
When boot options are shown on the screen put original recovery disc or Microsoft installation disc into ODD.
Choose CD/DVD as bootable device and press ENTER.

What happen when you do this?

Few days ago I had similar issue on friends A300. HDD was defective. After HDD exchange I was able to install Win.

Hi all, I received a W510 with a 256 GB Samsung SSD last week from a reseller. Upon start I noticed some strange errors in Windows (icons missing, problems rebooting) and subsequently ran the harddisk diagnostics tool available from the BIOS. The tool gave me the message: "Error code 0000: read verification failed". For me this is conclusive evidence that the disk does not work as it should. After a short talk describing the problem for a technician from the reseller I could return the laptop for a fix. This week I get the laptop back. Windows reinstalled and seemingly working. I run the Lenovo Diagnostics software which returns no error at all. But, not convinced I decided to run the BIOS harddisk diagnostic tool again. I get the same message: "Error code 0000: read verification failed". I call up the reseller and find out how they actually just made a reinstall of Windows instead of a thorough search for the fault. After sending him a picture of the output of the diagnostic tool he agrees that there is an error and will send some UPS labels so I can return the laptop for service.Later the same day I get a call from the technician and he informs me that the BIOS diagnostics tool is only for rotational media and thus not applicable to SSD. Apparently he got this information from another technician. I am a bit suspecious about this so I ask him to supply documentation for his claim in the form of Lenovo statements or similar. Somewhat unsurprisingly I ... Read more

Hi there ppl, I was told to start a Windows Memory Diagnostics Scan on my computer and to schedule it for the next time my PC restarts so I did, problem is it now wont stop it just keep's running, I have tried some of the solutions I have seen on here like turning of the computer and removing the ram sticks and swapping them around turning it back on but it still goes back into the WMD scan, so I cant even log into windows. I have tried booting up with the windows disk and restoring it to a earlier time hoping that might override the command made but that also failed, please help as I'm stumped as to what to do and dont want to have to reinstall everything or take it to some comp shop to be charged a mass amount of money for something that is probably very easy to fix.
My comp specs are Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit, Intel core 2 Quad, 4gb ram.

Ok, I will try to make a long story short. I've had issues with BSOD off and on for sometime now. They don't happen at any particular time and mostly occur in the middle of the night. They occur about every 3 to 4 months. I used Bluescreenview to look at the dump files. The driver it pointed to was ntoskernl.exe and the bug string mentioned in four different cases was reference_by_pointer, driver_irql_not_less_or_equal, memory_management and bad_pool_header. The other drive mentioned in one of the other dump files was fltmgr.sys with the bug check string of bad_pool_header.

Everything I could find on the web pointed to bad memory or bad mobo. I ran Windows Memory Diagnotcs Tool under the advanced setting. It took 9 hours to run and it failed. I took out all sticks of ram and put them in one at a time and ran the diagnostic tool with standard setting. That only took about 20 minutes each to run and all sticks of ram passed. I then put all sticks back in and ran it with the standard setting and all sticks passed again. I then took out one stick and left two sticks in and ran the test with the advanced setting and it failed. I'm now down to running one stick at a time with the advanced setting. The problem is it takes 9 hours to run on the advanced setting.

My question is do I conclude that if all sticks of ram put in one at a time fails that all my ram is bad or does that mean my mobo is bad? I plan to take a stick of ram from a machine that seems to work ok and... Read more

When ever I properly shut down my system it wont boot normally. Here is what happens:

It goes to the screen "Starting windows" and gets stuck.
I press the power button, and then press it again to start the system.
I am given the screen with two options: run system repair and start windows normally.
I chose system repair.
And after system repair starts it takes like half an hour to get to the screen with the option: restore to a previous restore point.
I chose no and the system repair starts again.
And at the end it says that it was unable to find any problems and weather I need to see advance options
in the advance options I chose run memory diagnostic.
The system reboots and starts memory diagnostics.
And after completing the test it again give me the screen with options start system repair or run windows normally. I chose windows normally and it boots
After booting I am given the message that windows memory diagnostics did not find any problems with the memory

This is how I boot my computer right now, but i really dont like it. Please tell what might be wrong and how can i fix this.

Thanks in advance.

It all started with a virus that infected my computer. It got so bad that my computer was unable to start up in safe or normal mode. It would get to the PBR-2....done screen and then it would get me to the F8 screen to try and start in safe mode but it would freeze or fail to load beyond that. I am virus free now but I am having issues with my hard drive. It is acting fine and behaving fine but, after running a diagnostics test (from the F12 button menu at start up) it has failed in one area consistently. That are being the DST Short status test error code 1000-0146 msg unit

Also from the diagnostics utility I receive error code 0F00-0240 MSG block 15919220 address mark not found or media error, read test fail

Could very well be a contributing factor. The DVD not only is tied to a brand but is also tied to a particular model. Since your hardware is not the same as your girlfriends computer, you are asking it to run a diagnostic test on a different piece of hardware.
I would not trust any results from a test designed for one hardware specs then used on different hardware specs.

Hello there, I am having more problems with my lenovo u410, I am trying to keep my cool but so many problems.. After having NO HELP from staff on I decided to you know use that One Key Recovery Feature to reset the computer back to the original state. So i did so....everything went fine (so it seemed), sadly the WIFI feature was NOT FIXED, same thing was still occuring right off the bat. I decided to take a look inside the bios, sadly I CAN NOT access the bios at all anymore, before using the One Key Feature, i was able to go in and at bios at free will. Now I can not access it at all. (Yes i tried every method outthere to access the bios, i do my searching before posting). Even the one key button option that says "Bios Setup" doesnt work , if i choose it, it takes me straight to Windows 8 OS. So i was wondering how can i recover the bios? Within windows 8 registery it says that bios version installed isLenovo 65CN94WW . so Clearly the bios is there but I am not able to access it. I would really appreciate some help. Is this version of bios the latest vesion?   Please SOME HELPFUL information would be very useful. I am losing alot of potential work.

I see in the change log that they added a new version of the Lenovo Diagnostics in the 1.27 version of the BIOS for the T450 (20BV0005US). The problem is, when you press F10 on boot up, rather than start the Lenovo Diagnostics like it is supposed to, the screen flashes a couple of times and the computer reboots. Likewise, if you press F12 on boot up, Tab over to the applications menu, arrow down to Lenovo Diagnostics, and press Enter, the screen flashes a couple of times and the computer reboots. I have attempted to address this by feedback in the software and drivers downloads section, on a feedback from a motherboard replacement, and by calling in to Lenovo after the motherboard was replaced, and have never had this issue solved.

I am running Vista Home Basic w/ SP1 on a Compaq Presario SR2168HM w/ 2Gb Ram. I launched Windows Memory Diagnostics from the Start Menu. it discovered no problems on 2 passes. Now the Memory Diagnostics resides in the System Tray permanently. I can not seem to turn it off. I have tried to find it in System Config, Services, and Programs and Features. I can find no where to turn it off so that it will not stay on the Systray. Can anyone give me a clue as to how to turn it off with out doing a reinstall of Vista. I did a System Restore to a time just before I ran Memory Diagnostics to no avail. TIA for any help. BTW I am somewhat new to Vista. I have only been running it on this Computer for about 2 or 3 weeks.

I have Toshiba Satellite L40 14F running Windows Vista.
I've made a memory test using the Memory Diagnostics Tool, bulid in Vista, because last two weeks I had two times a blue screen.

The Memory Diagnostics Tools found problems with my hardware.
Now what?

My notebook is new, I've bought it on 28.12.2007.

If you have some problems with your hardware then don?t waste any time and contact eh ASP in you country for a check.
If there are some hardware issues then the warranty should cover everything.

Hi, every time I schedule Windows Memory Diagnostics to run when I reboot my system (Win 8.1) it just goes to black screen when I use 2 memory modules but works fine when either is installed on its own. The Inbuilt BIOS diagnostics give the RAM a Pass, so does Memtest86. I found another thread with a user with the same issue, I can't find a link unfortunately as it was a while ago. But what fixed his issue is that Lenovo released a BIOS update within a few weeks of the thread been published which fixed the problem. I was hoping the same would happen here, a BIOS update fixing the issue I am hoping. Lenovo, please fix this issue in a BIOS update Kind Regards

I try doing the test 3 times and also tried restarting and doing the test immediately but no results were log. This is extremely frustrating and can someone help me? Thanks.

Answer:RAM fails Windiag Memory test, crashes Memory 86+

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Your problem is almost certainly caused by faulty ram.

The fact that memtest86+ is reporting ram errors, means your ram is bad.

One of your minidumps crashes with memory corruption.

Try one new stick of ram, and test your system.

The other three minidumps crash with Windows system file errors, but this can be attributed to faulty ram.

Also, one minidump crashes at SYMEvent.SYS=Symantec Event Library.

This is a known issue on some machines/configurations.

Turning off the live updates can sometimes solve this. Otherwise try using a different security product.

Hello, I'm the process of trying to de-brick this EliteBook 8640p that was working just yesterday, but I decided it was time for a re-format.  I went into the BIOS settings and noticed an option called 'Safe Erase'... and I decided to perform it. After the process was complete, understandably there was no OS found. The next step (I thought) was to add bootable media (DVD-ROM or Flash Drive, I tried both) to install a new OS. After tweaking the 'Legacy Boot' settings by putting USB Flash Drive at the top, I rebooted -- and it didn't load from the removable media. I tried checking the BIOS settings again, but every time I press ESC, F9, etc. during the POST, it redirects me to 'system diagnostics', which has been extremely unhelpful since all it offers me is a few diagnostic scans (they all pass, by the way). I'm not ever able to get back to the BIOS settings. This would be day 2 of my adventure, yesterday I tried updating/reinstalling the BIOS using a Flash Drive, but the utilities provided by HP all crashed when they were about to create the BIOS update drive. I tried moving basically every .bin file I could find (there isn't a single Phoneix Bios file that I could find) onto a freshly-formatted (FAT32, 4MB block size, 2 GB capacity) Flash Drive. Booting normally with the flash drive in keeps bringing me back to the 'system diagnostics' screen, over and over again. Something quite odd happens when I try initiating the BIOS recovery routine with Win + B -- when ... I used exactly the same 4gb samsung memory module that came with the notebook. What happened is i bought 2x Z580 so i put 2x original Samsung memory modules in one, and i bought 2x Crucial 4gb guaranteed compatibility memory modules i the other, and they both give a black/blank screen when i run the Win7 Memory Diagnostics on boot., and it stays like that until i am forced to hold the power button down to shut the notebook down. Both Z580 are completely stable no bsods or freezes while in Win7 and i have run memtest86+ 4.2 and v5.0b on both and i get zero errors. Anybody know why my Windows Memory Diagnostics will not run with 8GB, it runs fine with 4GB. I have tried tuning off UEFI and it makes no difference. Thanks John.

Hi, just got a T400 2765-T6U (fresh install win 7 IBM genuine install) on ebay and it is listed as having 3gb of DDR3 PC-3 8500 1066 ram. but when I run the thinkvantage system health and diagnostics program the scan says: memory DDR2 667 Mhz.I am certain that the installed ram is DDR-3 8500 because I looked at it. My concern is that for some reason even though the computer has the faster memory it is not running at the 1066 clock speed. PS >I cant install any other software because I am returning it to the seller as it has a bad spot on the screen. He is offering a replacement but it will be an exact replacement so I really need to know why this reading is incorrect. I may ask for cash back.because of this reading. I dont understand why the thinkvantage system health and diagnostics is saying DDR2 667 Mhz and not DDR3 1066 Mhz (which IS installed).. Is the Thinkvantage program giving me a false reading? Is there anywhere else in the compuer OS that I can see the memory details and clock speed? The Bios only shows the amout of Ram. Thanks!

Hello All!

I would like to totally wipe a 320 Gb Hitachi harddrive (IDE) so as to insure there is absolutely no possibility of previous data remaining on drive. This is on a test machine I have running Win xp home edition (SP 2). If I am understanding correctly after using KILLDISK then I will need to reformat disk and re-partition disk before doing the re-install. Is that correct?

Is this the right product to use for what it is I'm trying to do?

I wish to download KillDisk to a bootable CD-ROM and go from there. Does anybody who has used this app see any problems or have any comments about this process?

Thank you very much for your input/advice!

Answer:wipe harddrive w/ [email protected], reformat and re-install win xp home on test machine

You have the right idea, Killdisk or DBAN will do the job for you. After the hdd is wiped you can use the Windows installation CD to partition and then format the hdd, and it will prompt you through the installation.

Hey there, Wednesday evening I got home from work to find that my w530 had ran out of battery. I plugged it in and attempted to start it, but was unable to get past the lenovo splash screen and couldn't get to windows login. Iritatingly, the computer will randomly boot to windows login and allow me to login very rarely.Since then I've tried various attempts to fix the issue but things haven't improved. Initially I could attempt to boot to a DVD or USB but now when I select either boot option the computer goes right back to the boot options. If I can use one, the computer will hardreset and reboot. If I hit f12 I can get into BIOS or into the diagnostic utilities and the computer is stable without any crashes, even when running diagnostics for 3+ hours. Diagnostics have not found any errors with the ram, mobo, cpu, or HDD.I thought initially it might be something BIOS related, so I reset to default options, tried pulling the CMOS battery, and then flashed and re-installed the latest BIOS version without any effect from any approaches.I pulled RAM sticks one at a time to see if that was the issue without any change. I then tried pulling the HDD, all but 1 ram stick (4gb of 16gb), as well as pulling the 16gb SSD flash drive. Even with this I couldn't get the computer to boot by USB or DVD. When I connected the HDD to my desktop tower and used the bootrec.exe command in command line I was able to get the tower and laptop to get to windows, but it has since reverted.I've diss... Answer:2012 W530 bloot loop. Unable to boot by CD or DVD, no issues getting to BIOS or diagnostics

You don't think it might be some corruption to Windows on your hard drive used for booting?  Or perhaps a hard drive failure??
If the battery had "run dry" when you returned home, was the machine actually in sleep mode (or did it go to sleep) when you left the house n the morning?  Hibernation?  OFF?
If it was technically still ON and drawing battery power when the battery ran out, perhaps something crucial was going on at that instant and failed to complete, perhaps corrupting something unexpected.
Do you have a "system image" backup you can restore?  Of course your statement that you've already tried to boot and run to CD/DVD or USB has also not been successful, so maybe my idea regarding Windows corruption is not justifiable.  But I'm curious as to what software you were trying to run from CD/DVD or USB?
But again, if the hard drive and/or file system on the drive itself has been damaged or corrupted, then perhaps your CD/DVD or USB software actually DID get started ok (like your BIOS Setup and machine diagnostics) but only when attempting to communicate with the hard drive was failing, somehow triggering the machine re-boot symptom.
A new hard drive or SSD might be worth a try.  If you have Macrium Reflect or Partition Wizard, both of which can be booted from CD/DVD or USB, or a Win10 install CD/DVD or USB stick, you could see if the W530 behavior returns to normal after putting in a new drive.  If that... Read more

I have an SSD installed rather than an HDD.  I uninstalled the Lenovo Active Protection software and there is no trace of the app existing in the Windows registry.  Yet when the X250 boots just after the BIOS POST screen and before Windows starts I see a one line text message reading "Active Protection Sensor Diagnostics Start" for about one second.  What is this?  It looks like there is still some component of the "airbag" system still running.  Do I need to do something else to completely remove it?  Or is this just a message from the system board that cannot be controlled?  I see no options related to it in the BIOS.

Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 Home Premium, and all was well.Got a problem on a Toshiba notebook. so I borrowed a drive from the Compaq for troubleshooting, and then that HD developed the same problem as the Toshiba. Here are the system specs: Compaq CQ62-238DX  6/11/2010AMD Athlon II P320 Dual 2.1GHzProduct #: XC433UA#ABABIOS F.09  A Windows boot loop, of sorts.  I boot, system reports a problem and must run Recovery, that fails, and says it must run Repair, that fails, reboots, and starts over at Recovery, then Repair., of course each stage is complete with Error messages  about calling System Admin for help, using my Recovery, Repair, or Install media, which does not help.  The only variation in the routine is an occasional change in the errors reported, but the results are the same.  All the while, any Microsoft/Windows Recovery or Repair disks I try to boot with result in the same/similar error routine as booting from the HD. I can boot with Puppy Linux, Hirens, & Memtest.  But so far, Memtest has found nothing.  I don't know Linux and can't seem to use Puppy to any advantage; meaning I have not learned how to use it to find a utility that runs under Puppy Linux that can access the HD, find the virus or malware, clean it and restore the disk to usability.  I can get to the Puppy desktop, use the browser (Firefox) and get on the 'net, but I don't know where to get what I need, how to install... Hello, Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. Honestly, I am a bit lost and surposed at the same time re. your post. I am indeed in a security team and I can assure there is no such a thing (at least out there in the wild) that will infect hard discs from BIOS on the mass to corrupt their OS. So, I am automatically ruling out the infection/virus story. The Toshiba laptop needs to be fixed on its own - with Toshiba support and its parts. You can't just mix things from one notebook to another one - not all of them are compatible. Additionally, they both run Windows but the OS versions may be different and the drivers presents are different, the hardware is different. If you took the Compaq (HP) HDD and placed in Toshiba - it is expected not to boot properly out of nowhere due to options like Secure Boot , due to different Windows versions, different software and drivers present on the HDD, etc..... Could you clarify what are these " any Microsoft/Windows Recovery or Repair disks I try to boot " - please elaborate. Re. BIOS - it can be updated from outside Windows. My Inspiron 7559 won't boot, giving the message that hard drive not present/not found. This happened just after I received the laptop back from Dell. I had sent it to Dell without the hard drive for an ethernet card replacement. When I re-installed the drive, it would not boot. It was fine before I sent it.
However, BIOS identifies it as a Seagate Sata drive while Dell Diagnostics declares that all laptop components, including the hard drive are fine.
I first got the PXE-E61:Media test failure, check cable error. I soon learnt that this merely meant Bios could not find an internal hard drive and was searching for a network boot. Once I turned off networking in BIOS I went to a simple, no hard drive found error, which is where I am now.
The hard drive may or may not have failed. I've run six hard drive testing programs on the drive in an external dock. The results are ambiguous. Three (Macrorit, EaseUS Partition Master and Western Digital Drive Tester) all give the drive a clean bill of health. Three others (HD Sentinel, HDD Scan and  Crystal Disk Info), however, all reports various degrees of ill-health. Copies of the results of these tests are attached in a PDF file.
Anyway, I can read and navigate the drive with Windows Explorer in an external dock.
I don't want to abandon the drive as I have a lot of software loaded that I can't easily or plain can't reload.

Answer:Need to allow more memory to harddrive

You can reduce the space that is used for restore points. Dont eliminate the space, you will need restore one day.
System Restore - disk space
If after the change you still would like additional space, download windirstat to see where the usage is.
Windirstat will show how the current space is being used and how we can expand it.

All right, I'm buying a new stick of RAM and a new hard-drive to slave to my pre-existing one. I've got a few questions, first of all for RAM all I need to concern myself with is getting the proper type, right?Second question is, I've never slaved a hard-drive to a pre-existing one, what should I be concerned about/look for when buying the second hard-drive?

Answer:New Memory/Harddrive

1. yes, it would be good to buy RAM that your motherboard supports. you may wish to buy the EXACT same RAM that you have in your comp to avoid compatibility issues.2. for harddrives, you really just need to be concerned about 4 things: the capacity of the drive, the speed of the drive, the cache of the drive, and the interface of the drive (SATA or IDE). the capacity is totally up to you and the speed is for whatever your budget is, the higher the speed, the more expensive the harddrive...way more expensive. below is an example...320gb Seagate Barracude SATA @7200RPM - $93.83300gb Seagate CheetahSATA @ 15000RPM - $686.86  7200RPM is the most common harddrive speed as of now and we can see why, as many are still not willing to spend almost $700 on a 300gb for the harddrive cache, the more the merrier. the rule usually is, the larger the HD, the larger the cache should be.for the harddrives interface, it depends on what the interface is of your master harddrive. if your master harddrive is an IDE drive, you should buy an IDE harddrive, and visa versa regarding SATA.
