Windows Vista error of unknown origin

Question: Windows Vista error of unknown origin

Okay, the title sounds vague, but I can give more information.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion laptop. About a month ago, I started having an issue when Vista launched. After all of the pre-load process had finished executing, I got a message that said that Windows Explorer had stopped responding, and was restarting. Then a whole slew of programs and Windows services went through the same process. Everything from McAfee to my touchpad management software either restarted or stopped all together, and then the computer rebooted.

Now whenever I start up the computer, I still get the same problem with the following two processes: Windows Explorer, and Task Scheduler Engine. The computer does not go into a forced reboot anymore.

Certain programs have not worked properly since. The most notable are IE, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. IE behaves like I have no active connection, and I can't sign into either of the messengers. Oddly enough, Firefox works just fine - no problems connecting to the net and opening pages.

As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no idea where this could have come from.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Preferred Solution: Windows Vista error of unknown origin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\011112-30654-01.dmp
C:\Users\Dustin\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-54600-0.sysdata.xml
I've attached the dump file referenced above.

Hi, can someone please help as EA aren't helping me!

Origin was working fine until yesterday. Then it came up with this error code:

The procedure entry point _except1 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program\Origin\Origin.exe.

So I uninstalled Origin, several times and followed EVERYTHING they told me to do, manual uninstall, do it with no anti virus etc. I even tried to download from a third party website, which did progress more in the installation but still failed with even more error messages!

I have had Microsoft access my computer and they have also tried everything and have confirmed that nothing at all is wrong with my laptop (which is what EA was trying to say).

Its really frustrating now and I hope someone can help please!

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am running windows 10.

It was compatible with windows 10 as it was working for a week or so. It did keep crashing but I changed screen resolution and was fine.

I will appreciate any help, Thanks!

I loaded up explorer and opened up my C:/ drive to start a game in my program files, accidentally pressing "Downloads" finding this file there, my operating system is Swedish so the folder should be named "Hämtningar" (Swedish for downloads). The file is 93 kb in size and was created on the 27th january, there is also an account named "Unknown account(S-1-5-21-a bunch of numbers)" with total control, I also have no ability to remove it. I would like some help with this, malwarebytes also doesn't react on it. I've also noticed I'm unable to visit Bing (not like I use it, but still weird) with the access denied error.

Hi guys,

Basically I've acquired an old PC from a friend, I don't really know a great deal about the computer except that it is an Winfast motherboard with an AMD 64 Athlon processor.

I've been trying to fix the PC but when I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate from a disc the computer repeatedly crashes and shuts down after copying files reaches 100% or before.

I have also tried to load a Windows 8 installer and a Ubuntu live CD, but it still seems to crash after running for a while.

I have feeling that it may be an error relating to the graphics/video card, (which is intergrated into the motherboard). Because sometimes the screen shows just lines. I tried playing with the bios once (pheonix bios) but this stopped it from booting and gave the post beeps to tell me there was a problem with the video card. However I reset the CMOS on the motherboard and it now boots but still crashes when trying to install windows 7.

Are there any other ways around this? i.e. disabling the video card manually, or any other solutions? Kinda hoping this isn't a hardware related problem.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Boot error, unknown origin, ideas to make this computer boot?

Is the Windows Ultimate disc a retail copy? Or a burned disc? Or?

Is it a 64-bit disc?

I have never heard of the Winfast motherboard brand. It may be too old to support this version of Windows?

I have an infection of unknown origin. Problems just started to appear when I logged in this morning.
Attached are the requested reports from the Preparation guide. (attach.txt, DDS.tct and RootRepeal report.txt

My system was already equipped with AVG antivirus, Malwarebytes, and SpyBot Search and destroy.
However, this morning my computer was acting extremely sluggish so I started Malwarebytes. As was killed as soon as it started. I tired to start it again but is received the windows message stating that I do not have permission to run this program.
The same thing happened with Spybot and AVG.

I uninstalled Malwarebytes and reinstalled. Then I rebooted in safe mode and ran malwarebytes which found a bunch of problems that were quickly fixed.

I rebooted into windows (not safe mode) and installed Spybot S&D. After install it will not run Update. I manually update from safer-networking web site download. Spybot did not find any problems.

Then I try to reinstall AVG free 8.5 (build 409 - 8/7/2009) but I get and error during installation..
Error: Action failed for file avgwdsvc.exe: starting service....
Error 0x8007041d

Then I tried to install 30 day trial of Kaspersky but after installation the software will not run...
From Event Viewer:
EvenID: 7000
The Kaspersky Anti-Virus service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

It's been 4 days since my original post and no one has replied.I ran Trend Micro's Online House Call virus scan http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and found that I had the PE_PATCHEP.A virus and it attached itself to 2 system files... explorer.exe and winlogon.exeI was able to recovery those files by booting from the WinXP CD and starting the recovery console.Everything is fixed now. AVG installs and runs properly. SpyBot S&D can do updates. If I could only figure out how this Trojan got past my defenses in the first place then I could close that door also. This problem is solved. Thanks to me!

Well,

yesterday i began using google only to notice that when i clicked on any link, it went to a random redirected link where they would be selling something etc.

with that i went to avg and tried to update to test for viruses and the connection to updates was completely unavailable, i uninstalled avg and installed bitdefender for the same outcome.

today to address the problem i went on a forum much like this one and it tod me to use malwarebytes anti-malware, i did this and whatever i have also refused to allow me to even open this.

i then changed the names of all the .exe files in the program folder and was able to open and run the programs, i removed the threats as the forum advised me to do and now when i restart my desktop i am getting recurring svchost.exe application errors.

I attemtped a system restore but it appears to have gotten their to as it assures me that i need to restart my computer which inevitably leads me back to the same error message.

if anyone could talk me through the repair of my pc in terms that i am an outside chance of understanding that would be absolutely brilliant.

forgive my naivety in advance as i may struggle.

When using SUPERAntiSpyware to scan for virus, trojan, spayware, etc.... It finds 6 items in the registry and 1 file under Unclassified.Unknown Origin.5 of the registry keys start with:HKCR\CLSID{6D794CB4-C7CD-4C6F-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C} and the other one is:HKLM\Software\Clasess\CLSID{6D794CB4-C7CD-4C6F-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C}the 1 file's path is:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CBXXQIAY.DLLIt also finds one more registry item under the name of Rogue.Component/Traceregistry key:HKU\S-1-5-21-1777893114-209237723-344832790-500\Software\Microsoft\FIAS4018 This is a problem because SUPERAntiSpyware is not able to get rid of it. SUPERAntiSpyware prompts me to reboot so that it may delete the viruses on reboot but when I run the updates and re-scan the same items pop up. Unfortunately re-installing is not an option anymore so now I am asking for help. Everytime I run a SAS scan, it always detects something in one of the registry keys. It's labeled as "Unclassified.Unknown Origin". I don't know what that is. I always let SAS quarantine it everytime it is detected.Exactly what is it, and is it something that I should worry about?? Here's a screen cap below of my last SAS scan...and I have it highlighted so that it will stand out...

Answer:Unclassified.Unknown Origin....WHAT IS THAT?

Hi can you copy/paste that full string out of the log?
Have you run the scan from safe mode to see if it doesn't reappear?

I've tried SpyBot, MalwareBytes, and SuperSpyware to no avail. In a recent phenomenon, my computer is having trouble running more than one application at once. I had ad pop-ups in IE and my "new tab" function was hijacked in Chrome, although I seem to have dealt with both of those issues.

Hijackthis log is below. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello,

Windows 10 machine on home wired 'Powerline' network.

I was recently trying to start my streaming software (Universal Media Player) to stream a video from the Desktop PC to my PlayStation 3 via wired network. I had various issues connecting when I noticed that the IP address of the application broadcast looked odd. The IP address was 169.254.99.243. I started searching around the network properties and found that I had two network adaptors. One I don't recognise: "Cisco AnyConnect VPN Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64".

I immediately disabled the adaptor and the media server began working again.

I re-enabled the adaptor and restarted the computer. I checked the 'Network' section of My Computer to find a 'Phone' called 'angler' listed the properties of which stated it was a Nexus 6P - and my household doesn't have a Nexus 6P in it. I presume this could be related, or it could be another problem with an intrusion into my wireless network. The phone disappeared within a minute of me spotting it in the network and double clicking on it.

I haven't heard of something elaborate like this before - but at the moment something feels very off with this. To the best of our knowledge we have never used Cisco VPN software and we cannot trace the source of this network adaptor. There is no Cisco software installed on my machine.

Have I been hacked/infected with something?

My computer is running unbearably slow - so slow that I cannot even download email without it timing out. Hopefully I'll see a reply to this message on your website since no guarantees of getting to email (I had to go to a neighbor's house to send back initial registration email). This all started with a persistent and consistent address suddenly appearing in the Automatic Configuration option under LAN settings in the Internet Options portion of Explorer. I copied the address, googled it, and was directed to your website. Despite my best and repeated efforts, I could not complete all of your prep suggestions - some programs (adaware and antivirus and macafee stinger) would not load. I was successful in getting spybot to run and the specific address has since dispappeared from Automatic Configuration option but my computer continues to be slower than molasses.Any help would be immensely appreciated! Thanks, DebLogfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 11:34:03 PM, on 4/1/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system... I'm trying to fix my moms friends computer and i'm currently doing my second virus scan now (running in safe mode).

On the first scan i found 3 different trojans, but they were quarantined sucessfully. But now, on the second scan i found a trojan i found before again.

The name is:Trojan.Unknown Origin

I've been googling a bit and some other forums says it's a false positive. I just want to be 100% sure it is.

Any help appreciated.

Following a recent virus purge of my daughters desktop PC (using Malwarebytes), that terminated in a reinstall of Windows 7. When I came to reinstall the contents of the Toshiba external 1TB 2.5" HDD that had originally been formatted NTFS and used for backup purposes, I was confronted with an inaccessible array of ADI files that Win7 OS could not access.
In order to cut a long story short, I installed Linux Mint 16 (32bit) on an old (ex-Windows XP) Acer Aspire 3000 having replaced the XP operating system completely. I can now open the file which displays in binary form only. I would therefore appreciate any help and/or assistance in order to download the contents of the Toshiba backup HDD onto the desktop hard drive. Thanking you all in expectant anticipation.

Answer:External HDD backup files of unknown origin?

Hi Brink thanks for the information supplied by yourself and Jacee dealing with the inability to access various file formats. It is possible that this could be the solution to my recent enquiry :-http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/378582-external-hdd-backup-files-unknown-origin.html
Unfortunately I did not receive any response to my query which sadly could be due to my poor explanation of the necessary details required by you experts. The file format that I am having trouble with is "ADI" or .adi & would therefore like to know if this will be added to your list in due course. If there are any further questions appertaining to my query then I will be only too pleased to respond.
Thanking you in advance for any information you are able to proffer.

Hello,
My name is Devin and I have several years of tech support experience, I've done everything I can think of and I can't pin down what virus/malware/rootkit it infecting my system. I've wiped all externals with formats, I've flashed Bios as the thing came back after a reformat. I have my main system on an SSD which I secure wiped with PartedMagic. At this point, I just don't want to lose anymore of my files, I want things to work.

Please help, I've attached logs. I can't interpret them. I've never seen an infection like this. Everything save for GMER and DDS and HijackThis comes back clean. I'm near a breakdown as I've never been so stumped, and did this sort of thing for a livng for years in college.

Attached a DDS log per instructions and staggered  Hijackthis,Combofix and GMER logs in the post itself

As  a side note: I had though I had cleanred it, but when restoring files onto a new 2 tb drive I bought as an emergency replacement (alarmist and overkill, I know), the popups came back. Usual flash download popups. I flashed the bios again, but I doubt that will help in the long run...
I thank you for anything you can do.
Where does a rootkit in the bios lie? In the extreme do I need to chunk my mobo and get a new one altogether and/or replace my RAM? Do I need to low-level format/DBAN my drives? Only two are internal with boot sectors, both not MBR but the newer standard of GUID (which I'm sure I'm mangling as I write this)

Again,

Greetings to all.

First time poster so hope you are all well. Since I'm not sure what specificly is causing the problem I've posted it here, so hopefully that is alright!

I am having a spot of bother with trying to get my microphone to work. A couple of months ago I bought the Logitech Easycall desktop keyboard because of it's wireless capabilities and the advantage of using the microphone on the dock provided.

When I first got it she worked grand, no problem at all. At this time I was using Vista. Since then I've reformated my computer and this time returned to having XP as an operating system. But when I try to setup my microphone I'm getting nothing but static from it with even added more static if I try to talk. This happens if I try to set it up through the Audio Wizard provided or by going into Control Panel/Sound Devices. I have tried the microphone plugged into the Easycall dock and into the ports provided on the computer and got the say result. I also tried the microphone in my laptop and it worked fine so I know it's not something wrong with the hardware.

Hence the reason I'm here. I am at a loss. I've tried re-installing drivers, plugging it into different places and such but to no avail. Something obviously isn't set up right but I don't know what it be. What's got me stumped is that it worked before and doesn't work now. If it helps, I got SoundMax HD Audio drivers for the onboard soundcard. They work grand and it's only through the microphone that I ... Read more

Bing and MSN seems to have hijacked my browser. HP pc w windows 8.1 newest IE (I believe) Norton anti-virus and, today, cleverbridge delux running as well as steps taken per this forum whilst browsing.

Have re-entered Google as homepage in Internet Options repeatedly.
Attempted to locate on "program uninstall", it's not there in any form or date as well.
in Manage add-ons under "types', bing appears (alone) but will not remove.
Have re-set Internet and personal settings twice.
Ran Norton Power eraser to no avail.
Bought and ran Cleverbridge (came up clean) to no avail.
In Internet Explorer "properties" there are no symbols after 1.explore.exe.

as a note...initially upon opening browser, message read, "no internet access", or, "address incorrect", etc, and I noticed that this malware kept adding an extra "https;//" to the correct address for Google in the search window. Altering that error only served to receive additional error messages.

Greetings!
This computer has been disconnected from any networks since Feb. of this year, due to too many kids going too many places online without
concern for virus or spyware protection. So when I started finding virus's I pulled the cable and disabled the network hardware.

The kids are all gone & I'm ready to try to get this machine in shape again to connect to the internet.
Before I reconnect and enable the hardware, I want to be sure it doesn't jeopardize the rest of home network computers.

The issues are the same before and after following the "READ & RUN Me First" Instructions. They are:

- The Administrator Account (Goddess) has a password of unknown origin.:confused

Windows Explorer:

- Search mode <OPEN CONTAINING FOLDER> does nothing

- Shortcut properties <FIND TARGET> does nothing

- Folders View - When a folder has a + beside it & click on + it opens the Folders to view in the tree (left side) and the right side,
BUT when folder icon is clicked it only shows the folders on the right side and the + disappears from the tree without showing the subfolders?

ADD & REMOVE Programs

- While trying to install NetFramework - error reason: INDOWS\System32\Advpack.dll

- All Window Updates disappeared.
(have since added Service Pack 3, hoping that would solve this problem)

- RN_Object (w/no other information) was listed in installed programs - nothing happened when click to remove ... Read more

Welcome to Major Geeks!

First let's just be up front and say that many of your issues are probably not malware related and that you really may be better off just reinstalling this PC from scratch rather than spending alot of time trying to fix any malware problems along with fixing all the Window Operating System issues that may exist.

I was really excited at first to buy this brand new HP Pavilion 23 AiO. I have owned and administrated a lot of computers in my life. I love my laptop for personal use, and i thought that upgrading our home PC to this All-in-One was going to be great investment. It removes the need for both a tower and bulk montior, by combining the two into a nice flatscreen stand alone featuring the "tower" built in.  Over the time of owning it,  It has gone from the family computer to just my wifes because at first i thought i our teenagers were the ones at fault for it having so many problems. It is now on its 3rd HDD, and 2nd set of RAM. It got its new RAM and final HDD just last week, and is already returning to its random spuratic crashing and boot failures. It lasted a while in the beginng never having any problems like this, but once it started that very first time they have more common and frequent.  Sometimes the computer will out of no where get a BSOD and state the computer has ran into an error and that it is collecting things and going to restart. Other times your using it and everything would be fine, turn around for one second to work on something else and spin the chair back and your now looking at a boot error stating "No Boot Disk has been Detected" and messages in that nature, always pointing to the HDD. Well last week i gave it a 3rd BRAND NEW HDD because the 2nd HDD stated that it had "Eminent Failure" along with a new stick of RAM because it wo... Read more

I'll make a timeline so this is easier to follow

1. Picked up some sort of virus/malware/(I don't really know the difference)
2. Scanned with superantispyware, had 7 results, including one fishy "Unclassified.unknown origin"
3. Rebooted upon request (windows automatically updated something on that reboot as well)
4. Log in screen looked fine...and then a blank screen. My wallpaper is usually yellow with a picture on it. So my whole screen was yellow and I had a cursor.
5. Task manager wouldn't open. Ended up pressing shift five times so something came up and I was able to open an explorer window, run regedit, and enable windows task manager. No idea why that was disabled
6. Used task manager to run explorer.exe and everything looks fine except I don't have an internet connection
7. Googled an answer, someone said to run cmd: cd c:\windows\system32\winevt
8. "Access is Denied"
9. Opened msconfig and disabled UAC
10. Repeat step 7
11. Cmd: ren Logs Logs_bad
12. Cmd: mkdir Logs
13. Rebooted. Everything the same as step 4.
14. Enabled UAC

I don't know what else to do. Also, the unknown origin thing is located at "HKUS\S-1-5-21-2791125010-2061037798-2193384331-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (userinit - C:\Users\rubadub\AppData\Roaming\sdra64.exe"

The browser itself was working fine, but whenever I would open a menu to change any kind of settings on Firefox or an extension it would stop responding for a minute and the screen would flash as if it was going to ask for a permission, then the menu window would take forever to close even if I didn't change anything. I thought I had just installed something that used more memory than I expected so I switched to IE (which I almost never use but FF was taking too long) and looked at the task manager as well to see which extension I needed to uninstall, and noticed that random system services as well as Firefox (which I had shut down several minutes before) were using more than half the memory on what should have been an idle system. I started looking through event logs and found that a bunch of unknown user id's had managed to log in remotely. I know very little about programming and was still able to follow it around as it made registry changes and inserted weird instructions (in more-or-less plain English) into executables in the directory. It was as if there was another person doing it in real time, but I had the (windows) firewall locked down and my wireless adapter switched off manually, so there's no way I can think of where that's possible. We had a duel over file and directory permissions for a while as I was able to regain ownership of some directories and kick it ... Read more

I am running a dual-boot machine with Windows XP MCE 2005 & Fedora Core 6. The problems I am experiencing are occuring within the WinXP environment.

When my daughter logged on a couple of days ago, her desktop was different. The background was gone and her icons had been rearranged. In addition, when she tried to go to "My Documents," it was empty. I have two HDD, and she has a partition where I had redirected her documents and most of the application data. So I went into the registry, and found that all of the changes I'd made to redirect her documents, her application data, her desktop, etc. had been changed. They were going in random places, including the system 32 folder. I tried to edit them so they'd go back where I had them. Every time, I'd get a message that said, "Cannot edit [key name]: Error writing the value's new contents." I closed regedit and reopened it. Now, all of the keys were sending her data to the C drive under the %USERPROFILE% variable, but I still could not edit the registry to send her data to the second HDD where it had been going for the past 6 months. Note, these particular issues are not affecting the admin account.

So, I decided to run a virus scan using AVG 7.5. First, I went to update the program. Each time I tried, I'd get an update error informing me that the update could not be completed. So, I tried using Kaspersky's online scanner. Here, I also got an error during the process of upda... Read more

I have an Athlon 2400 running under WinXP SP3 with 900MB RAM.The free versions of AVG Antivir and ZoneAlarm protect my PC.I recently got a warning stating a new version of ZoneAlarm was available (standard message with possibility to immediately download the update or be reminded in X days). After downloading the zaSetup_en file, I went through the whole install process and chose the free version update (the other choice was a 15-day trial Internet suite version). After update and re-boot, I immediately noticed that everything was ultra-slow. The CPU was indeed at 100% all the time. I could not even open a folder as it took for hours to open (it actually never opened). I re-booted twice to be sure that everything was installed correctly. Also, a Windows message warned that the firewall program was deactivate. I tried to open the ZoneAlarm setup page but it ignored all my attempts to start/open ZoneAlarm. After waiting over 10-15 minutes for any folder/program to open/start, I had to realise that my PC was most probably infected by a virus. These last few days, I noticed that my PC was a bit slower than usual, but attributed it to an intense use with too many Internet pages open simultaneously. This slowness was however nothing to compare with the current situation where I can actually do nothing.I am not 100% sure that current ultra-slowness is due to the ZoneAlarm update. I noticed though that the update file was not as usual, as the file name did not contain any re... Read more

Usually, when a virus hits my computer, I tend to know how to search for solutions because the virus usually attacks something specific or leaves a trail of sorts.  For this one, I have no idea what it's doing on/to my computer or where I got it from.  In fact, I got it when I was AFK so I definitely don't know how I got it.  All I know of it are 2 things:

1. It got rid of my System Restore option.  It doesn't just turn off System Restore, it literally got rid of the tab in System Properties.

2. When I boot up Windows normally, it gives me a black screen.  I'm not sure if it's freezing or doing something to my graphics, I don't know.  However, I can load up Safe Mode (with networking) perfectly fine.  Albeit with a much longer than usual load time.

Anyway, here are my DDS logs:

Does anyone use Origin? Tonight got an update to the client and now getting a no disk error relating to having a card reader installed on my system. Workarounds are unplug the reader (not an option as mine is internal) or keeping an sd card plugged into it so it's 'live'. Second option avoids the issue but not ideal as don't want an sd card plugged in all the time just in case that could interfere with system booting or cumulative updates. Anyone noticing this? I posted in EA forum but though I'd post on here too. I use Steam and Battle.net too and no such problems with these clients. All these clients including Origin are installed on my secondary internal mechanical hard disk (I: drive), the letters in between C and I are assigned to the memory cards and bluray drive

Hi all. I'm experiencing an "unknown hard error" with my machine running 64 bit Vista. I tried browsing the existing "unknown hard error" threads but could not find anything for my situation.

It seems that while using my machine, Vista will sometimes lock up. After a minute of being locked up, I get a BSOD indicating a "c000021a unknown hard error". Unlike other "unknown hard error" messages, this one does not specify any specific file.

The conditions in which I've been able to reproduce the error (with even remote consistency) is either sometimes while using FireFox or while attempting to install the Mythos beta.

Also, I was going to try and debug the Minidump, but for some reason that is not being written in the standard C:/Windows/Minidump directory.

The machine was built in late September 2007 and this BSOD has recently started showing in the last 1-2 weeks.

Any help that can be provided is greatly appreciated.

Do you have .NET 4 installed? It could be a problem with Steam and that. You would be better off going to a more specialized area for support on this as even i cant decode those errors.

I have tried asking for help with this issue on EA's Answer HQ and no one there could help me fix this issue in the past. And don't even get me started on how helpful their Live support is.

When ever I try to run digital copies of any Sims games, it crashes before the launcher even appears on my desktop. This is an error with the paul.dll file that is included with the games. No one can give me any real help or advice that actually works, and since this is an issue with a dll file I thought I would ask here. How can I fix this issue so I can finally play Sims again? Thanks.

Answer:Paul.DLL error when trying to launch Sims via Origin

Hey,

I'm not familiar specifically with the Sims games (well, I've only ever played the first one on console) but what I can do is try to troubleshoot this from a technical point of view for you (one of the few things I am good at).

Ok, so the first step and probably something you've been asked to do time and time again, is to get a DxDiag log, you can do this by going to the start menu, going to run and typing in "dxdiag", then press OK or the enter key and when the program opens click "Save All Information", save the file to your desktop and then attach it to this thread.

It would also help me if you could post the full text of the error, for example does it just say there is an error in "paul.dll" or does it say something more detailed like "Error 2091A occurred at offset 0x0001bf3a in paul.dll" etc. These additional error codes can help me to narrow down exactly what is going on.

Finally I have to ask, have you tried doing a full reset of the Sims?
These are the instructions for The Sims 3, I don't know which version you're using, would be useful to know

I've gotten the BSOD three times over three weeks for no apparent reason. I haven't installed any new hardware or software recently, either.

When I ran my report, it said 44% of my events were missing and that I should investigate it. I have no idea how to do that, unfortunately. It also said that I have no anti-virus, but I do (Avast!).

I have attached my System Health Report and filled out my System Specs to the best of my ability. I am no computer tech, but I'm not a noob, either. If you need anything else from me, please guide me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:BSOD 3x in 3 weeks, unkown origin, error 0x0000003b

All three say a system service got bugged out by the same exact instruction attempting to use an invalid memory address to read memory with. The faulting service was AWWService.exe, which is part of Ad-Aware. I reckon this is in conflict with your Avast, as it's not wise to have two AV engines running simultaneously like this as they could trip over each other. You can try and update both Avast and Ad-Aware, but the best thing to do is stick with leaving one on (preferably Avast) and leave the other off, only to use it for the occasional scan.

I was given an HP Compaq Presario C500 that was headed for the garbage because it would not connect to the internet. After running several scans ESET online scanner came up clean. Installed Microsoft Security Essentials and installed SP1, and can't get it to install SP2. I keep getting error code 80070017 / Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I would prefer to reformat but Recovery Manager restarts back into Windows and I have no disks.

Can provide a long list of what has been done if needed including WU Modules (Normal Mode) and WU Components fixes. Permissions point in every which way but the correct way!

Any help would be much appreciated!

and 4.91 GB free of 5.53 GB on Presario_RP (D)

I have run FixIt, but to no avail. I have also turned off services and rebooted and ran Windows Update and still got this error.

Do I need to just skip these updates, or somehow troubleshoot this and fix it. If I need to fix it, I need help.

What browser and version of the browser are you using?
Have you tried another browser?

I have a least 2 browsers on all our computers to test websites.

So what is throwing the error, Java or Javascript? Note these are two very different things. Or are you getting two errors on every website?

My NE 522 came with Windows 8 64-bit but when I was informed that I could upgrade to Windows 10 for free I jumped on it. I remember having to stair-step to 8.1 then 10 during installation. Everything seemed to be fine for a few months then the BSOD. I managed to get it going again for a short time and now the Laptop is not operational. At startup I get the Gateway logo then a blue screen saying "Default boot device missing..." I get past this using the "recovery" stick I made just after purchase but I get "Choose keyboard layout" then "Troubleshoot or Turn off" as options. I have used the Troubleshoot Path to get to the command prompt. I also can get through POST and access the InsydeH20 startup utility (BIOS) which I use to unfreeze the HDD password (not sure why it keep freezing). Refresh, Reset, Restore and Automatic Repair all fail. From command prompt I access x:\Program Files <x86>> desktop.ini and see one HDD (Boot) with 27.6 MB free of 30.0 MB. I also see the Removable Storage devices.

The top of the command window says "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]" Does this mean Windows is installed?
If I have lost the OS how should I attempt to re-install, Win8 then upgrade or straight to Win10?

Answer:OS origin for Laptop or Windows 10

No need for Win8, you can go straight to a clean install of Windows 10. Your successful upgrade from 8 to 10 has recorded a Digital Licence tied to your PC's hardware on Microsoft's activation servers. Do a clean install of 10 (making sure you install the same version as you had before, Home or Pro) and when it asks for a key skip this with the 'I don't have one' or 'register later' option. Once installed your Digital Licence will automatically activate the new install.

A quarter century ago, Windows wasn't everywhere. In fact, some were doubtful it would ever ship at all.

At that point Windows was no longer considered the company?s star project, as it had become a bit of an embarrassment. Even internally there were doubts among some in the company that Windows would ever ship. Also, because Ballmer had already burned though four product managers to try to get there?people who now had been either reassigned or were no longer at Microsoft?the product was developing a reputation for career death.

Hello, I have a brand new windows vista laptop, and i wanted to share the files on my desktop ONTO my laptop. I went to Windows Vista's

1) Network
2) Network And Sharing Center
3) Set up a connection or network

None of these options seemed to be correct for me, so I was hesitating on what to do, and still don't know.

The way, i'm connected to the internet is through a router--Wireless and i'm dsl so i have a modem.

My main desktop>Modem>Router---Wireless connection to my laptop.

Please help me on how to get the 2 computers sharing with one another, these files are for business reasons, and are very important.

Thank You,
TechHelp24

EDIT::I am trying to share with 2 different os's. Windows XP and Vista Home Premium.

Answer:Windows Vista Problem/Unknown

Hi TechHelp24

The following assumes:
You want to setup a simple workgroup for your home network [that is, the computers do not belong to a domain -- i.e.= you're not at your work offices].

Steps:
1) For both computers, see what workgroup name the computers are assigned to: if it's the default, it's likely MSHOME. If both computers already show MSHOME as the workgroup, you don't need to worry about this step. You can think up your own creative name for the workgroup, so long as all the PCs you wish to join the workgroup have the same workgroup name assigned.
2) Decide what folders to share - if you wish, you can limit sharing to just one folder on each PC, and drag & drop files into it: this will keep all your other files in the more secure "not shared" condition. For the folders you wish to share, right-click on them, and go to the "Security" tab & set permissions. By sharing the folders, you will be enabling "File & Printer Sharing". Should you have any printers you wish to share, right-click on them, & share them in a similiar fashion.

*NOTE* if the files you need to share are highly critical business files, it would be a good idea to restrict access by password-protecting the sharing --- http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.co...nt.php/3667616 --- (basically, in Vista's Network & Sharing Center [in Control Panel] select "use password-protected sharing", then make sure your accounts have passwo... I've had this laptop for less than a week. I have not downloaded anything other than a few security programs which I have paid for and used and three messangers that I use including skype. AOL was installed for a few days but it is such a large program that I removed it.I am using Verizon Wireless Broadband to access the net. From the second day of having the computer I began getting dll errors, I tried looking up the dlls and got nothing from the net... such as:Error in c:\users\owneappdata\local\temp\wqophnsx.dllmissing entry:runWhich was the latest dll error.Further more, I cannot open such things as My Computer, Display, My Documents, etc.. I recently had some virus issues. After solving those problems, i can no longer download any programs or applications. They all have an unknown pulisher warning. I wiped the computer clean and still the same issue occurs. Has anyone experienced the same problem? What steps can I take to correct this? Thanks in advance.

Answer:windows vista and unknown publishers

By wiped what do you mean?

If you meant you performed a system restore, then the system restore points were also infected.

If you meant by reformatting the drive during windows install, then any media that you used thath ad files on it were infected.

Answer:windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Doesn't windows live work with steam games? I got the steam version of GTA 4 and it would sign me into windows live so I could see when my XBox friends were online. (Bonus XBox points for playing on PC. )

Never really used it much so can't say for quality, but I imagine Win Live would be for the XBoxers to stay in touch.

Monday night after returning from work, several problems cropped up on my computer all at the same time after I restarted it. My computer had been running somewhat slow before then, but virus scans didn't detect anything wrong. Here are the problems that I've been having since I restarted my comp:
The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal, except from when I tried a system restore.
My computer has been running very slowly, far more so than before Monday night. It seems like it takes five times as long to load anything (programs, web pages, etc.). It also takes far more time than normal to restart my computer (it even failed to reboot once, and I was forced to unplug and replug my computer to get it to start up).
Whenever I scroll down the page in any window (in IE, Word, Frontpage, or any other program, it does so slowly and there's this weird "ripple" or "wave" effect to the scrolling motion. It does this whether I use a window's scroll bar or my mouse's scroll wheel. Also, a similar problem happens whenever I drag a window across the screen.
Real Player has been playing video files slowly, and the picture was all pixelated. (This was the first program I used after res... Read more

Hello,

I am trying to partition Windows Vista in order to install my beta copy of Windows 7 (7022) just to try it out. This is more trouble than it is worth however as I keep getting an error saying that I cannot create a dynamic drive (i'm not wanting to). I have one main partition for Vista, and one for my data, but I wanted another for Windows 7. I do not want to lose any data, and I would like to painlessly get rid of Windows 7 without affecting anything at a later stage. Also I believe you have to boot from a disc, but how do I enter my bios to change to boot from the DVD as it isn't set to.

How do I find out what my unknown partitions are and can I delete them?
If I cannot how do I create a partition for Windows 7.

Here is a screenshot:

Thankyou very much your help. I am sick of problems like this.

Answer:Cannot partition Windows Vista for Windows 7 - And Unknown partitions etc

I don't know what the second EISA partition is being used for, swap disk maybe? At any rate I don't think you can partition Disk 0 any further because there is already a combination of 4 primary partitions and that is a limit in the MBR. I think to use that disk you'd have to figure out if the second EISA partition is needed, find out how to delete it, join the unallocated space with the D: partition and then split the D partition into two and use the new partition for Windows 7.

Alternatively you can install Win 7 in a virtual machine instead or put in a seperate hard drive for it.

Hi

I have a Toshiba Equium L10 with Windows XP loaded as default but I installed VISTA Beta2 "public release" on it and given that it's only a 1.5GHz Celeron CPU with 512MB RAM, it ran extremely well but, I have one problem which I am hoping that I can get help with from the users in this forum and especially those who have the same/similar Equium model as I have?

Ok, after installing VISTA I checked in Device Manager and noticed "Unknown Device". After checking out the info given in it's properties, I have detailed it below:

Location: Microsoft ACPI Compliant Embedded Controller
Value: ACPI\ACPI 0001 * ACPI0002

When I re-installed XP again, I went to Device Manager/Batteries/Microsoft SMART Battery, the entry for Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem has "ACPI\ACPI0002\6&28CA2229&0".

Notice the "ACPI0002" info given for the 'unknown device' in VISTA is the same info given for the "Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem" in Windows XP. So I am left wondering if the unkown device under VISTA is the Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem and if so, why did VISTA not install the driver for it?

Can anyone help with find a driver for the "unknown device" in VISTA?

Regards
Brave

Answer:Equium L10: Windows Vista Beta2 - unknown device

Hi

The unknown device appears because the driver is missing.
Unfortunately, at this time you will not find any Toshiba supported drivers for the Windows Beta2. This is a beta version and not official on the market.
I think if this OS will be official supported so you will also find the needed drivers.

Windows XP came pre-instilled on it
We keep upgrading the comp, with new parts conitnuely, but my video card is around 2 years old? motherboard around 3-4? and I am not sure about the CPU
I have windows seven for 2 years but we reinstilled it twice one time would be 1.5 years ago and the other time would be 1 year ago.

My grapihcs card would be ATI radeon HD 4850 (RV770 pro)
My motherboard is ASUS M2N-E
and my power supply is Ocz 600 wats

Background info: I get BSOD's in Bioshock 2, League of legends, and GTA4 (including episodes) but not in dead space 2, I think it's a computability issue but I am unsure. Also I tried to get a BSOD today in order to find out myself which file it was, Sadly I did not get a BSOD at all today even though I played Bio shock 2 for an hour (usually happens 15 minutes in) or GTA 4 for 2 hours (happens at around 30 minutes)

It's really strange that when I go hunting for BSOD's I never get them, but when I'm not hunting them I always get them, lol

Hey guys, first post on this forum! I've seen so many helpful people on these so fingers crossed I can get my problem sorted.

Basically, my HP Desktop P6-2022uk hasn't been able to search for (and hence download) updates, and I'm getting the error code 800B0100 which I'm more than familiar with. This has been doing it for a year and a half, give or take a month or 2.

I've ran the Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 but it doesn't help.

I also ran the "sfc /scannow" and got "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations" at the end.

Massive thanks in advance, I really appreciate the help!

Lately I've had a few issues with my computer, it got slower, and some games didnt install properly due to directX errors. So after looking at some forums for battlefield 3 directX errors I read that uninstalling Origin would be a good idea to fix the problem. While that was going on, first the mouse stopped working (keeping in mind it does that sometimes without there being a problem with the computer), then the screen froze entirely. It came back for a few seconds afterwards, then it froze again and i got the BSOD.

It was set to automatical reboot, so I couldnt read what the error was.

Now the problem I'm having is that, when I start the computer I get these options: Start computer in safe mode , Safe mode with internet, Safe mode with leadtext or whatever and Start windows Normal. Which ever I choose will fail.

Choosing the Normal startup will cause the computer to get stuck on the windows login screen with the wobbly win logo.

Choosing the Safe mode (with and without internet) causes it to stuck, it seems to not be able to load some files.

I've tried running the repair windows option, but the screen went black and nothing else happend.

This error message used to open whenever i clicked on something aswell as a message bubble on the taskbar. Which would then open a website for some "spyware removal tool". I have managed to get rid of the website link, however the message is still popping up.

Hi,

The tool I have a link to below with directions will run on Vista, but you may have to use "RunAs- Administrator" if you do not understand that, let me know.

Please read all through the info so you know what will be done.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

There is a Printable Version button up under the Thread Tools drop down menu that will let you print a nice text version of these instructions.
Alternate way to save directions:Open Notepad> Copy and Paste any text you wish into Notepad, and Save the file as something you will recognize like TSGhelp.txt and save it onto your desktop.
Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

From Origin (or even without origin, just trying to run the game from my desktop alone), I cannot play the Sims 3 or my only expansion pack, the Sims 3 Pets.
I have two other games installed that work completely fine: Plants vs. Zombies and SimCity.

The error happens just a few seconds after trying to launch either of the Sims games, without even opening the launcher. This is what the error message says:
Code:

Sims3LauncherW.exe - Ordinal Not Found

The ordinal 304 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll.

Then, after clicking "OK" on the prompt, I get this:

Code:

Sims3Launcher

Sims3Launcher has stopped working
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem...

I have had 5 chats with 5 different people from the Origin online help chat, and as suggested I have tried all of the following, all to which none have solved my problem.
Logged out & back into Origin
"Repaired" games from inside Origin
Restarted my laptop
Manually uninstalled Origin, then reinstalled Origin from the Origin website
Uninstalled the Sims 3 Pets and The Sims 3 (not manually, I would need guidance for that), then reinstalled both
Updated AMD drivers
Installed Windows updates
Clean booted my laptop
Please help!

Hi,
i was using windows live messenger a few days agon and had problem. so i uninstalled it. (including manually deleting the files from mt C drive ) but when i tried to reinistalled it again, the windows live installer kept showing that i already have all the programmes i needed to download installed. But i do not gave any ! And when i tried to download other verisons, it will state that i have the lateset version of windows live messenger installed, uninstalled it, then install. Anyone knows how to slove this problem? Thanks.

Answer:unknown error reinstalling windows messenger

I'v never used Windows LIve Messenger but heres a common remedy for uninstalling programmes.

1. Uninstall through Windows Uninstall or change a program then reboot
2.Navigate to the folder it was installed in eg C:\Program Files\Windows Live and delete that folder
3.Go to C:\Program Files\ Common Files and delete any folder relating to the programme you want to get rid off
4.Navigate to C:\Program Data and delete any folders relating to the programme you want to get rid off
5. Go to C:\Users\whatever your name is\AppData\ and look through all the folders and delete any entries of the programme
6. Reboot your pc

If your using 64 bit vista remember to check in both C:\Program Files\ and C:\Program Files (x86)\ After doing that the installer should work but if it doesnt come back here and we will try to help

Hey. I'm working as a PC technician so I get alot of PC's in with errors, but this one is beyond my knowledge, and i came across this forum, and I assume someone here knows what to do
So, this customer has problems with his Dell laptop when trying to run windows update. The error message states that the service is not running, and that i need to try to restart the computer, which i've tried. I tried resetting the windows update and everything. ran MBAM and removed/disabled all AV e.g.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?
I cannot find the service Automatic Updates running, could this be why? and how do i enable it/install it in that case?

I had the same problem since I enabled AHCI mode for Sata controller on my GA-P55-UD3, a motherboard from Gigabyte with P55 chipset. I also had problems with other programs that analyse the pc configuration, like 3DMark Vantage, Fraps and Hardware Monitor.
The problem is probably due from the interaction from the OS, the drivers of the chipset and the bios. You can solve it by updating the bios of the motherboar to the newer version, published on the Gigabyte's site on 30 October.

I get unknown error D8070204 - install failed. My last succesful update was May 3rd, which was from my automatic update setting. Could I have gotten a virus somehow which is preventing windows update from installing updates or is there something else that is wrong? I will be running my full Avast Antivirus scan tonight to see if it is a virus. Can anyone help with this? Thanks

Having recently fixed a Windows Update problem on one laptop (by doing a Vista Upgrade on it) I have now noticed another Update problem on our second laptop. Although most updates install successfully, three of them repeatedly fail to install and result iin the folowing Error Message:
"Windows Update encountered and unknown error", together with Codes: 800B0100 and 807000D.

I've tried the various fixes previously suggested on this forum but none have worked. Is this another case of having to do a Vista Upgrade, or are there other fixes I could try?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Update for Microsoft Security Essentials 4.5.216.0 (KB2949787)

Microsoft .Net Framework 4.5.1 for Windows 7 (KB2858725)
Update failed, error Code 641 “Windows Update encountered an unknown error”

Things I’ve tried:

Verified that my account is an admin account. (It is.)

Restoring to an earlier point in time.
Result: More updates showed up, but ultimate the same few refused to install

Using the MAT tool
Result: No problems with Windows Update found

Using msconfig and disable all startup items and non-microsoft services. them rebooting
Result: No difference

Downloading Malwarebytes (from a different computer), then copying the installer to my Win7Pro PC.
Result: Ran a full scan, but found no problems.

Download Microsoft Safety Scanner and ran a full scan.
Result: No problems found.

Hello everyone. I've had this issue for almost a year and a half now. I have been trying to install windows 8 with every way possible, on my main desktop computer without any luck.
I follow the standard procedure. Make a USB Flash drive bootable, reboot, boot from it. After it boots, it shows the Win8 logo, the loading circle, and then, just before the language selection screen, it throws a blue screen for a moment and then the computer restarts. The code is 0x061636932, which is a completely unknown one. Last year when i googled the error code i got no results. Then i created a thread in another forum. Now, if you google the error code, you'll get my thread and another thread from a swedish forum. Bottom line is this:
I have changed motherboards, RAM sticks and GPUs. Tried without any drives except one that would have been used for the installation (SSD and HDD), different flash drives (both UEFI and Legacy boot), DVD-ROMs burnt from a variety of different ISOs (Both Win8 and 8.1, and lately Win10 preview). BSOD persists.

Note that Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux Mint work completely fine on the same computer. I've been running Windows 7 on it for 3-4 years.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi guys,

I have a Win7 Pro 64bit machine that is constantly coming up with a UAC box stating it doesn't know the publisher when I run windows programs, for example cleanmgr.exe.
I've attached a screen shot of the error message, sorry don't know how to embed the image.
I only get the UAC with windows files not other programs.
Any idea what's wrong?

On a side note, I discovered this when I found I was not able to do the windows updates on this machine, keeps giving me errors. Thinking they might be related.

Sean

Answer:Windows error: Unknown Publisher on windows files

Hello BSeanD,

Do you have administrator access on your machine?
Also, you can change your UAC settings by following option one from this tutorial. But it is highly recommended to keep UAC enabled, as it is a great security feature.
Good luck and keep us posted,

My thread was closed and I was told to follow the new instructions which I had read already. I am using Windows Vista 64bit and DDS is not compatible with this OS. I did a GMER scan only being able to select the three default options and results turned up with zero results and no log.

Here is the original message for review unless there is another set of instructions for 64bit users.

I have been testing a small application called Alpha Blender which enables me to set windows transparency case to case. I originally did a single file scan on Bit Defender and Kaspersky and both came up with clean results. However, I just used TotalVirus file scanner and it came up with the results below:

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/6...994-1243064377

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system tracking my strokes? I am using BlackViper tweaks minimum config so I know it may have helped. Just need insight on weather or not my passwords may be compromised.

I have attached an HT log for review. If any more information is needed I can help.

Hi,

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system

No, not necessarily.

Programs, often do not produce the desired results on 64 bit systems.

Lets do a couple of scans to make sure you are clean.

Please do the following:

As a Vista user I will require that all the programs I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programs may fail to operate correctly

Download OTS**to your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.
