"Rules" for Windows 7 Upgrade Verified

Question: "Rules" for Windows 7 Upgrade Verified

Personally I'm not liking this. To sum the article up it says that there is no way to perform a clean install with the Windows 7 upgrade disc. You can only perform an upgrade with it and there is no "work around" like in Vista.

There is a a great comemnt that sums up my thoughts "Way to tell everyone this right after the huge preorders for the upgrade version finish."

I guess Microsoft hasn't changed that much after all. I'd rather have them make good products then have good customer service I guess.

Preferred Solution: "Rules" for Windows 7 Upgrade Verified

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: "Rules" for Windows 7 Upgrade Verified

That's just BS. For one thing that article mentions upgrading RC Windows 7 and that will not be possible as it will require a clean install, but the same clean install method available in Vista will work in Windows 7.0.

I want to know if I can import/export my Vista Mail settings from my laptop to my desktop PC?

I'm not talking about the contacts which is easy but rather all of the blocked senders/domains lists and quite a few "rules" I've set up.

Hi guys,

Ive been searching around for a way to get files to copy themselves from a certain folder into another one IF they're below a certain size. I was wondering if anyone knows of a program or script that I can schedule to do this for me.

Basically heres the problem: When I download work it goes to the downloads folder where I want it. I use dropbox and sometime I save work into the downloads folder assuming its in the dropbox folder and will sync to the cloud, only when I open my work computer I realise that the file is not present. I want to know if i can set files below a certain size (say 50MB, so I dont get huge downloaded videos and apps syncing) to copy into a temporary location in my dropbox folder as soon as they are saved or changed.

thanks
tom

Answer:Possible to create "file rules" similar to email rules

Moving files based on size and moving files based on changes to them are very different problems, the former being the easiest to solve. You can write a batch file to run every x amount of time (via task scheduler) that will scan the directory and copy files if they are smaller than a certain size. You might create a file called "size.bat" within the same directory

Code:
@echo off
cls
setlocal

set maxsize=52428800

FOR /F "usebackq delims=" %%A in (`dir /a-d-h /b`) do (

set size=%%~zA

if %size% LSS %maxsize% (
copy "%%A" "C:\Dropbox"
)

)
The above file will scan the current directory (for only files, omitting the scanning of any subfolders) and will copy any files it finds to be less than 50MB (which equals 52428800 bytes) to the C:\Dropbox directory. Obviously, you will have to change that directory to wherever your Dropbox directory currently resides. And, you can change the maxsize as well. Just make sure you translate the size into bytes as that's how the "dir" command natively reports back file sizes.

You can then use Task Scheduler to set up this batch file to run at whatever interval you'd like to transfer the files.

The latter issue of copying files based on changes is a much more involved issue that I don't currently have the time to address, but it's doable with the same concepts and coding I've shown you here.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm trying to play Runescape (nerd much?) and I keep getting the stupid Java "This publisher could not be verified." warning. I don't believe i have gpedit.msc however I do have regedit.

Answer:How do I disable the "This publisher could not be verified." warning?!

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I don't want to preach, but before you disable warnings of this kind you may wish to consider you have a possible virus infection.

I'd be inclined to run a full virus scan in Safe Mode, for which Malwarebytes is highly recommended.

this is more of an annoyance than a real problem but I'd sure like to know how to stop it from happening.

I work for a small company, doing Technical support. We have three of four applications that I have to open every day, programs written internally by our programming department. The programs sit out on a server, but I have a local shortcut and confuguration file to run them over the Network. Every time I close and re-open these programs, I get the infernal warning message:

"The Publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"
Underneath is the message "this file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run software from publishers that you trust"

I have to click "run" to get it to launch, and it opens fine. It just irks me that I can't figure out how to tell Windows to quit bothering me and just open the program!

Is there not some place where I can go and tell Windows which programs to open it every time, and add it to a trusted list somehow?

Answer:turn off "Publisher could not be verified" message

thanks !! that seems to have worked, that means any .exe file will run without prompting.
I'm a bit surprised there's no method to selectively choose individual .exe files, like a firewall program can do.

Since my original thread regarding this problem is closed (too old, from November 2008), I am continuing it on this new thread.

As a reminder, somehow for some strange reason, my Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop stopped giving me warnings for unsigned downloadable programs. I tried (almost?) everything conceivable to fix that - to no avail. Here is the original thread:

I *want* the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning!

I eventually got to implementing the last suggestion (sfc /scannow), but that didn't help either.

I am out of ideas, totally baffled by this mystery.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Answer:I *want* the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning (cont'd)

Eureka! I can't believe this... I think that I solved the mystery: Said warning does appear but only for programs that I download via Internet Explorer!

I was testing this function all that time by downloading via Firefox 2.0...

Apparently, the hint has always been there, in the form of the registry key path: as its name implies, it is intended for Internet Explorer. Duh!

However, I could swear that it worked via Firefox, too, on the other machine. The other machine has Firefox 3.0. Is it possible that Firefox 3.0 supports this feature while Firefox 2.0 doesn't?

I have a bunch of rules set up to categorize my email. I made them all using the rules wizard. Unfortunately, if I want more than one condition in the email, for example from someone and containing particular words in the body, it seems to have to be an "and" statement--no "or" statements. I would like to set up a rule that says to categorize based on meeting one or another condition, either or.

Right now I just have to have more than one rule for a given category to account for the various conditions. It would be so much nicer if I could combine some of these rules somehow. Is this possible?

Thanks

Greetings everybody (my first post in techguy.org ever). Before posting here, I searched (and googled) almost everywhere for a clue how to solve my problem, but all I could find were requests (and tips how) to disable the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning, which is exactly the opposite of my problem.

For some strange reason, my Windows XP Pro (SP2) laptop does not display this "Publisher Could Not be Verified" warning when trying to run a newly downloaded program, even when that program is not signed! (with a digital certificate)

I verified that the relevant IE6 advanced security (tab) settings are set correctly. Specifically, the following two settings are checked:
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for signatures on doanloaded programs.
Also, my file system is NTFS (without which this XP SP2 feature won't work).
So, I reached a dead end as far as trying to understand why my XP SP2 stopped warning me about unverified downloaded programs - and how to fix it.

Any idea what could be wrong in my system? How to fix it (short of re-install of Windows XP, of course).

Thanks!

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This window keeps coming up from Norton Internet Security 2005.

I don't use the Windows Messenger.

Can anyone tell me why and how to stop it. It's becoming very annoying. Thanks a lot.

Answer:Norton Internet Security "Rules" window keeps coming up

There should be a User Guide somewhere in the program folder, although it might be described as a 'Manual'. If it's not there for any reason, it should be on the program CD (assuming you didn't download it).

If you can't find the Manual, try this Symantec KB article;http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...88256f6c0040d19f?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

I believe that Windows Messenger is an irritating 'service' that allows popups to appear on your computer;http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/. It is difficult to see why anyone would want to keep it but, if you don't choose to disable/remove it, then I imagine you will want the firewall to monitor what comes in or out and so will have to set 'rules' for it.

This is a quick post, and far from comprehensive. Just have the "urge" to write it down.
I've been making and restoring images on my home computers for many years. My success rate is 100%.
I'll just state what has worked for me. The important parts. Some may disagree with how I do it, and that's fine. This is mostly aimed at those with no experience, and can get them started well.

1. Get Macrium, Ghost 15, or other imaging software. I use Ghost 15, and have used Macrium. They work.
Macrium has a free version, which I tested out. It worked fine.
Don't use the Win 7 imaging utility. It does incremental images, which introduce complexity, and it has unacceptable weaknesses.

2. You MUST have either another internal drive, or an external drive to hold the images. The more the better.
Some might argue one drive with 2 partitions will do, and that's true. I don't recommend that.
Data drives are almost as cheap as dirt, so why open yourself to defeat if a sole drive fails?

3. Keep your system partition (we'll call it C) as small as practical for you. Install all registered and commonly used applications on C. This is your "core" system. This is what gets restored in as little as 5 minutes, with no reinstallations.
Do not put data on C. Back up data separately. My Documents, My Photos, My Downloads, and whatever else Win 7 or an application stores on C should be redirected to another partition. You HAVE to know where applications put your data, because when ... Read more

Hello,

I recently installed Office 2003 and set up my Outlook rules for messages received through "specified account" to be moved to "specified account". This way when a message arrives that's addressed to account "a" it gets moved to the folder named "a" and when a message arrives addressed to account "b" it gets moved to the "b" folder, and so on.

I have 14 accounts and all the rules work fine, except for the "default" account. For this topic, let's say that my default account is called "a" and my inbox account folder is also called "a".

I created the rule exactly the same as all the other, however, when I try to run it, I get a dialog box called: Rules in Error and it contains two columns named "rule" and "error". Under rule it says "a" and under error it says Cannot move to the "a" folder.

I've looked through the microsoft Knowledge Base and done several Google searches but can't find the identical problem.

Anyone have a clue what could be causing this error?

Thanks,

Rick

Hello,

I have read, but did not understand, articles on the memory limitations in Outlook 2003 when using Rules. I think I understood, that there is a limit to the number of Rules. Each rule uses approximately X percentage of the memory.

The memory limit was expressed in some computer unit of measurement and then further qualified. What I am seeking to know would be expressed in a approximate number of rules.

If you're familiar with this topic and can help me I would certainly appreciate it.

Thank you

After having used for some years another firewall I considered now to switch to MS built in Windows Firewall (in Win 7 Pro).

So I deinstalled the old FW and enabled the MS WF.

When I go now to wf.msc e.g into "Inbound rules" section then there are much to my surprise many "Allow" rules for external, non-microsoft prgms which I never entered. They must be added (in the past) somehow automatically.

How can this be?

How can I reset the rule set to the initial state just as if I would have installed Win 7 just a few minutes ago?

Moreover I searched for a 3rd party program which is currently not listed in the WinFW ruleset e.g. a shareware or other program ABC. Ok, now I started this program and did some actions which triggered an Internet connection from this program.
Unfortunately It worked.

I expected a WinFW popup informing me that prorgam ABC wants to connect outside....but nothing happened.
The program was able to do this WITHOUT prompt.

Yes, I enabled "notifications when prgms blocked"

So what?

Why is WinFW not doing its job?

I made a new rule supposedly to send any mail containing @weirdstuff.com in the From: field to the Weird Stuff mail folder.

(posting this since i cant get any replies to a previous topic)

Answer:Install time difference between "Upgrade" and "Custom"

The upgrade process will always be longer, and sometimes considerably. The upgrade process has to move/relocate previous files and keep certain registry entries based on software already installed. Did the upgrade eventually complete? (it's a silly question but you could be dual booting). If not then it could be a bad burn and your systems is taking it's time trying to read the install files from the DVD.

I would like to know how to stop these extremely annoying pop ups that ask something about allowing a program to connect to a particular website.
In the title bar of the pop up it says," set web site rule"
They aren't advertising pop ups.
They are pop up windows generated by my own computer seeminglhy to try to get my permission about something.
It gets to where I am doing nothing but clicking on the buttons of those pop ups as they come up one after the other after the other.
It practically makes me want to throw my computer across the room!!!

Please help!

Answer:ANNOYING pop ups in IE asking about "web site rules"

Welcome

Before going any further, lets be sure it is not something that requires attention, now. Run a thorough anti virus scan and the download and run malwarebytes, to look for malware.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

I am fairly certain that malwarebytes will come up positive and you will have to remove the malware.

My question involves Ďrulesí in Outlook 2002. Even if you donít have 2002 I doubt it would make a difference. Anyhow, I have two e-mail accounts in my Outlook program. I have many rules set up for each e-mail account. This is what Iím trying to doÖ

Any e-mails sent to: [email protected], move them into [email protected] folder. Then once they are in that folder, I want the other rules to apply and move into other sub folders, given a rule applies to them.

Now, my problem is that when I receive an e-mail, I receive the e-mail in folder [email protected] and the sub folder it should be going into. So basically two copies of the e-mail.

:::lol::: Reading over this, Iím sure none of this is making any sense to you. Let me try explaining this a better way. Seeing how I have two e-mail accounts in Outlook 2002, all the new e-mails I will receive will default and go into my inbox. Well obviously, I want the e-mails from each account to remain separate. So I created folders, that are named after that specific e-mail address. Thatís basically where I want them to default to, but my only way of doing this is creating a rule for it. Which seemed fine.

But, seeing how once they are in their own folders, I then want other rules to apply to the e-mails and then move them off into sub-catagories. Well when I have all these rules working, I receive one e-mail in the e-mail folder specific to that e-mail address, and then another rule takes over and applies i... Read more

Answer:Outlook 2002 "Rules"

One rule per *variable*. Don't use a rule to move it to folder X, then another to move it to folder X-1. Just create a rule to move it to folder X-1.

Does that make sense?

At this point, seems you could remove the rules to move it to folder X.

Can't you apply all of these rules in the Inbox instead of the relevant [email protected] folder? So instead of it going from the inbox to [email protected] to [email protected]/xxx it would go straight from the inbox to [email protected]/xxx.

Would that work?

"dependency chain" "windows 7" internet "windows explorer"

At the time of this writing, this search in Google will produce one result at best. Am I searching the wrong things? I have tried a couple handfuls of variants, and I am coming up with zilch.

Though I am fairly well versed in Windows 7 from working on other people's machines, I decided to stick with good old XP because of one issue above all else. When I instructed my firewall to block Windows Explorer from accessing the Internet it completely cut me off from the Internet, no ifs, ands or buts. My understanding of why this is happened leads me to believe the dependency chain for Internet access goes through Windows Explorer. I have long had a habit of blocking my File Manager of choice access to the Internet because... well, it's a file manager! Admittedly, my one experience with Windows 7 on my own machine was a retired student version of Server 2008 R2, but as soon as I found out that was the case, I decided not to make the move to Windows 7 and went back to my XP installation. I believe I was using Sunbelt Personal Firewall at the time. I now use PCTools Free Firewall.

Is this still the case with Windows 7? Is there a workaround if it is?

I haven't tried to recreate this on another person's machine.

Hi KronKyrios, welcome to 7F!

I did find some very old information that may shed some light:

"Launch Browser Windows in a Separate Process" Setting Is Not Available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5

You can go into Services and check:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Network Connections
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Windows Management Instrumentation

R-click on each one, then Properties, then the Dependencies Tab.
You would have to cross check each one that is listed.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

I have been playing the game for a few weeks now in my spare time on my Windows 10 desktop and have acquired some bonus packs, a dozen vehicles, upgrades, unlocked 5 seasons, and moved my user rank up to 4824 in the multiplayer ranks amongst various other things. I do not want to lose my progress but for the first time i wanted to upload a ghost the other day and seen that (it seems) I will lose all progress if I log into Facebook now. Also, I noticed that my "local account" doesn't transfer my save data when I log into the game on my Windows 10 laptop (which is super inconvenient because I am rarely home). I seen topics posted that a Facebook sync fixes this but I am afraid I will lose all my progress.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Answer:On Windows 10: "Asphalt 8 Airborne" can I sync my "local account" with my "Facebook Account?"

I am with you on this. I'm having the same problem, and the Customer Care form at Gameloft is not set-up yet for inquiries on desktop platforms. Also, search engines are hard to trigger relative informaiton on the subject. I have no intention of changing over to my Facebook "version" if the progress isn't going to be transferred.
It's just a new problem brought around to headline the Windows 10 updates. I'm sure there will be a wait time, but there has got to be a flood of new Win10 users that are firing up their CC services for a fix.
If I find out that it fixable, I'll get back to this thread.

How do I turn the Java on so I can watch video's, how do I verify it

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Question: outlook "rules"

I cannot set an email rule that works after I have set it up and "tested" it. Example: I keep getting emails from an on-line casino which includes "rack up some quick cash" in the text body. I carefully set up a rule to redirect any emails with this condition into my deleted folder instead of my junk mail folder. When I tick the box saying "run this rule now?" and hit enter, the junk mail folder is emptied and the emails go to deleted items. BUT when I say apply and OK to "file" the rule, the next time an email comes in, it goes to junk mail and just sits there without being redirected to deleted items.Using win 7 but with office 2003. Not a train smash but irritating.

You want to install the OS, from the same disk, on 3 different machines?

If so, Yes...you can do it...as long as you have 3 seperate valid keys to use on each machine.

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Answer:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/.

Greetings!
I have had/and or have the following issues since having the forced Win10 Anniversary Edition upgrade push on my Alienware 15 R2, as I have Win10 Home Edition, not Pro and cannot pick and choose which updates that can be installed...

1. Multiple NV driver/.dll errors which cause BSOD's after login regardless of what NV driver is installed.  I've deleted ALL NV folders on my laptop and used CC Cleaner Pro to mop up each time; problem(s) still exist.
2. I now have five user profiles listed under Users folder...
3. Cannot change computer (laptop) name. I have never ran across this issue before with any OS update or upgrade on any system I've ever owned; have been doing this stuff since 1997.
If I do a factory reset, the Anniversary Edition will install again, as I've got Win10 HE... Catch-22.

Hi guys!

So i tried installing windows 7 Home Premium using an empty HDD. The old OS was Vista, and it was located in the same HDD. I managed to install Windows 7 successfully, but when booting after the install it crashed right after the "starting windows" screen. It then gives me the choise between starting the startup repair tool, or to start windows normally. When i run the startup repair tool it can not fix the problem. I've tried different HDD but the problem still persists. The fact that I haven't got a clue what to do really annoys me. In addition it isn't even my own pc. My dad's vista started failing on him. So I figured: Hey, why not install windows 7 using my old disk from a pc I don't use anymore. I appreciate all help.

Specs:

MB: ASUS P5N-D
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600(2.4 GHz)
GPU: XFX GeForce 9800 GTX
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint T166 250GB. (SATA 2)
RAM: Corsair Twin2X 6400 DDR2 (2048 Mb*2= 4096 Mb)
PSU: Corsair (550 W)

It was seperated in two parts. One with Vista in, and one for other files. I cleaned the whole thing, and deleted the part where Vista was located. I think it was seperated into one part with 208 Gigs and one with 25 gigs. The smallest with the OS in. The HDD works on my own computer.

I have a 2006-era Compaq PC with an AMD 64 X2 4400+ CPU (Socket 939), and it runs Windows 7 Home Premium x64 perfectly. It can even run Windows 8 x64.

However, it cannot do the in-place Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 Technical Preview 64-bit upgrades, due to this confounded CMPXCHG16b CPU atomic memory swap instruction issue (not an issue with 32-bit variants, but I'm not interested in 32 bit, as my system has 4 GB PC-3200 of Crucial DDR RAM - all matched sticks, 3-3-3-8, dual channel, 128 bit access, very fast, and I want to be able to use *ALL* of it - hence my insistence on 64-bit).

My question is: With this free Microsoft Windows 10 "upgrade" policy, can I still take advantage of it, but using a clean install, instead of the (impossible) in-place Upgrade, using my valid Windows 7 Home Premium x64 retail Product Key?

Thanks in Adavance,

Answer:Will Free Windows 10 "Upgrade" work with Clean Install (CMPXCHG16b)?

Welcome to the forum.

Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 have some CPU requirements above those required for Windows 8. Following the "fail early" principle the incompatibility is checked for early and the upgrade is not allowed to proceed. I don't see how a clean install would change this. The CPU does not meet requirements and nothing will change that.

Hello,

This will be my first post on this forum.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Toshiba SATELLITE CL10-B-103 for my son. This CL10-B-103 had Windows 8.1 installed. This evening I planned to do the installation of the Windows 10 Upgrade because Windows 8.1 announced it was ready for the upgrade.

The proces went slowly but smooth and with no issue until now...... Since the laptop is equipped with only a 32 GB HD the upgrade proces informed I had to stick in a USB Stick. After this the proces continued smoothly but slowly, but that was no issue because I had the whole evening. However after the first restart of the system when it was at about 60 or 66% of the installation proces this error message showed: place the external storage and press OK. This is very strange since the USB stick was not removed at all and was still in the system. The more strange it is, is that both the OK-button as the Cancel-button are not selectable. Not via the touchpad and not via a Tab or an Enter.

Some online Windows 10 community post mentions that via the BIOS the system should be booted from this USB Stick. I have tried to restart the system with DEL, F2 or F8 but I could not get into the BIOS and was not able to change the boot sequence.

After each 'restart' the same error message appears. It does not matter whether the USB stick is in it or not.

So, my conclusion is my CL10-B-103 is hanging/is in a loop. I do not know how to proceed.

Please, I really can use some help.

Many thanks in... Read more

Since it seems I cannot modify/change a post I reply to my own post now.....

The issue seemed to be solved. When I was able to use the touchpad I could push the butten OK and the upgrade proceeds now.

Hi everybody,

I recently followed Microsoft to this wonderful Windows-10 offer.
I didn't much like it, so I restored an image made just before I upgraded to Windows-10.
Image is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
This image also contained the many Microsoft Nags telling me "I'm ready to go".

I thought I got rid of most of those.

Now I find that using the Windows Update utility still lists the "Upgrade to Windows10 Home" link, as an optional update. I don't want to do that.

My issue is: No matter how I try to ignore that link, (hiding the link, checkBox OFF), Windows Update will always begin with the "Upgrade to Windows-10" ... all 3GB of it.

So, if anyone can help me get rid of not only that Optional Update link from my life, but anything else that might be lurking, I would be grateful. As a matter of fact, I will choke down a healthy shot in your honour.

Regards,
Paul

Hi all,

Recently upgraded my Dell Latitude E6420 to Windows 8.

When I attempt to use my Sony TV as a second monitor via HDMI cable, I no longer get audio. Cable is fine and worked previous to upgrade.

Video comes up fine. In "Playback Devices" (with both "Show Disabled" and "Show Disconnected" devices checked), Digital Audio is greyed out and unable to be selected as a default device - simply says "Not plugged in".

I've tried updating various drivers, but to no avail.

Display adapters:
Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000NVIDIA NVS-4200M

Have been reading through forums etc. for the past few days, but no joy. Very frustrating.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Answer:HDMI Audio Device "Not Plugged In" post Windows 8 upgrade.

When you plug in an HDMI cable, the HDMI becomes the default audio playback device, rather than the "Speakers" (the PC sound card). You will have to manually change the default playback device back to your speakers in the Sound Panel.

When trying to update with Windows update, i get a spontaneous reboot or a bluescreen-crash.
The filename "lzx32.sys" is mentioned.

The updates i'm trying to install are the following (roughly translated from norwegian):
"Update for Windows Media Format 11 SDK for Windows XP (KB939399)"
"Windows Tool for removal of dangerous software - march 2007 (KB890830)"
Other than that, i believe i have all other windows-updates.

I do however recall there beeing a third update on the list when i started the installation for the first time.
After the third or forth spontanous restart/bluscreen, when i figured something was wrong, it has disappeared from the list.
I do not know if it actually got installed or not.

I've been following the 5-steps-before-posting as good as possible.
From my normal startup programs msn-messenger and daemon-tools were shutted down before the dss-scan.
Here are the three logs (panda-activescan, dss-main and dss-extra attached):
PS: note that the "extra.txt" is from the first scan, which was done abit earlier than my last scan where the pasted "main.txt" is from.
This is because i was unable to get a fresh "extra.txt" from the last scan (no minimized window at all).

I'm running windows 7 on a 1 year old PC, and use windows live mail as my mail program of choice. oddly enough, WLM sometimes eats my emails, only showing a portion of them. this is NOT the issue where images are hidden: more often than not, it's the text or body of the email. and they can be from any number of sources; personal emails from regular contacts, or even the generic group messages, like from twitter and facebook.

that's how they look, whether i view them inside the program or double click on them to have their own window. however, the emails come through fine via webmail or my phone, just not in WLM, where the text is hidden.

any ideas...?

if it helps trigger any ideas, this seems to happen to specific addresses (like, all twitter emails, or all emails from my friend karl) instead of just every email.

it's infinite i don't know what to do, i don't have a cd rom, and i can't reinstall my windows from USB because every time i tried it says : "disk error" or "disk read error"
even after i burn it to USB correctly, tried this on other pc and USB can load just fine.
i'm thinking, it's something wrong with my boot system in System Reserved, is there anyway i can do to fix this?

Have you tried changing the boot sequence inside the BIOS?

Hi all

Ill cut to the chase.

What I am asking is someway of turning the Entire Windows Desktop/Screen "Black and White" not simply High Contrast.

I am one of those unfortunate ones, like many, that suffer from quite severe migraines from time to time. Couple this with frequent headaches, sometimes daily. This obviously isnt helped by the fact that my hobby and career are both in IT. I have tried every possible solution to alleviate the headaches. Lay off certain foods, make sure to have a balanced diet. Turn off any strong lighting around my computer screen, remove any strong colours from the desktop etc......

Windows XP / Vista have tried to address this issue with the accessibility wizard, where you can select the High Contrast Options to take any strong colours off the screen. Unfortunately this still doesnt get rid of everything.

When you make any major changes or "logoff" in XP/Vista, the screen fades to "black and white" for a short period. If you know what I am on about, thats the effect I am after.

More than likely a black and white layer is laid over the desktop to create this effect, unfortunately you would not be able to access anything underneath.

I need a fully functional XP machine in complete black and white.

On old CRT monitors you were able to remove the colour, making the screen B&W, but with alot of LCD screens this function is not available.

If anyone has any ideas, you would be helping so many people.

I have a problem that's driving me crazy and no idea how to begin to deal with it. Please forgive the length of this post. I just want to minimize going back and forth to provide details.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (legitimate license) on a 64-bit system. My laptop is an HP Pavilion G7-2022us.

For security, I run Microsoft Security Essentials, ThreatFire, Hitman Pro and WinPatrol in real-time mode (they have different functions and don't conflict with each other). My firewall is Windows native firewall. There are various other little monitors to prevent keylogging, webcam hijacking, etc. I have a variety of other file cleaning, anti-virus and malware software that is kept turned OFF (including processes) until I need to cycle through them one-by-one to do preventive maintenance (2 - 3X a year or whenever I'mexperiencing weird behavior or slowdowns).

I have an Orico USB3.0 powered hub in one port with six external hard drives attached (mostly WDs) and two charging phones. Another USB port holds a Logitech Nano Receiver. The third (and last) port is empty. Right now I access the internet through cable Ethernet.

I like to play with new programs and have a large number installed on my machine, but I haven't installed very much in at least a month, certainly nothing I have installed seemed to directly result in this strange behavior.

I really need some help here. It's hard to believe no one has one bit of insight into this.

Since I first posted I repaired the file associations for pdf, exe and lnk files. The former was causing issues when I moved pdfs into folders, but was not the cause of the main crashing, nor did it fix it.
Now I'm running the Tweaking.com Windows repair. It's in hour 32 on a 1TB drive and is still on Step 5 (Repair WMI). I have no idea if I can interrupt it or if doing so will screw things up further.

In the meantime am using 6 year old Android tiny keyboard phone to get things done and falling behind severely on work I need to do.

seems good but warning: i clicked on "Java" in "Final Tests" tab and had my portable firefox both updated automatically and changed from 32bit to 64bit app. uggh, really pisses me off. It's probably Mozilla's fault, or mine. Guess I was expecting something more simple and refined, like atmzzrSystemCheck, awesome little gem.

If anybody understands how i could have avoided that, I'm all ears and greatful. Or if you know of other autotraps in Windows Repair Toolbox. Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Thanks,

I decided to upgrade my PC from Win7 to Win10 before the free upgrade time expires. It has been a bit of a nightmare.

After the upgrade completed I have no Internet Access. I know the hardware is good because when I revert back to my image of Windows 7 I do have Internet Access.

When I type
ipconfig /all
I get only this. No ipconfig numbers at all.

Windows IPConfiguration

Host Name: MyComputerName
Primary Dns Suffix: blank
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

The Ethernet card shows working properly

I uninstalled and reinstalled driver.

I ran
C:\> netshwinsock reset catalog
then I ran
C:\> netsh int ipreset reset.log
This gave me an error message
Access denied

My initial attempt to do the upgrade failed at about 44%. I googled this and removed my symbolic link that allowed me to move my user data to my D:. Google said there could be problems with that. After that the upgrade completed but I can't activate because I have no internet connection.

I suspect that deleting the symbolic link may have something to do with the problem but I don't know.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:ipconfig shows only "Windows IP Configuration" after upgrade to Win10

I you just upgraded to Win10, the easiest way to resolve issues is to do a Clean install
as long as Win10 is activated

If you upgraded a while ago, then it's your call to troubleshoot the issue(s) or do a Clean install.

A Clean install means CLEAN.

The box is like it was when new - no extra drives, no external devices connected (mouse, keybd, monitor are the exceptions)

The only disk in the machine should be unallocated space - no partitions

Audit you system with Belarc Advisor - save the HTML report to an external drive. This gives you the keys for purchased software so you can install that software afterwards

Backup your personal data to an external drive

This is all covered in the tutorial, but some people miss some of it and have to start over or experience other issues.

Read the tutorial, ask questions, back up your data, then install Clean.

After the Clean install, let Windows Update (WU) provide all of the drivers for your devices - don't install from disc or OEM download.

Then check Device Manager for any flagged devices. Since WU did not provide the driver, you'll have to visit the OEM (either PC or Device mfgr) site to resolve it.

Then install your favorite software - weeding out any you don't use very often. This has an additional benefit of getting updated 3rd party software, much of it updated for Win10. An upgrade carries over the old versions and does it's best to make it work with compatibility - better to have updated softwa... Read more

Hi,
Since my free upgrade to Windows 10, I see the message "Working on it..." whenever I try to open My Computer/File Explorer. It stays this way for a few minutes and doesn't show the drives during this period. If try to click anywhere or close the window, then the window switches to "Not Responding".
Other problems that I am seeing seem to be related (or not) are:
1. Right-click menu takes a LONG time to appear when clicked on an icon.
2. The "Open File" and "Save As" menu from inside any program also takes a LONG time to open (just like File Explorer). If I do try to click or try to close it, I again see the "Not Responding" message.
I've been try to get rid of this problem since the upgrade, but no luck yet.

Answer:File Explorer shows "Working on it..." after Windows 10 upgrade

This appears to be a bug some (not all) are experiencing related to the upgrade. Fortunately I don't..
I guess this is one where MS is 'working on it' - comments suggest updates in Sept.

You do have 10 days to roll back, and if you use Win 10 Pro, you can defer the upgrade.

Otherwise you may wish to use other means of blocking updates.

Meanwhile feel free to try checking for a 3rd party program conflict:
- does it happen in Safe Mode?
- after a clean boot?
- if you disable context menu entries using Shellexview (free) - hide all MS entries, disable all others, noting the 32 bit option which reveals more.

Thus you may be able to solve this.

I recommend anyone thinking of upgrading to SP2 to read this first

The Dark Side of Windows XP Service Pack 2

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art...l?printversion

heres a snatch of the article!

Quote:

The Prep Work
Before you even think about upgrading a machine to Service Pack 2, it?s a good idea to take a few minutes and properly prepare the machine. Yes, you can technically install SP2 without doing anything special to the machine ahead of time, but you are far less likely to experience problems if you plan ahead.

Spyware Removal
The very first thing that you should do is to scan your machine for spyware and remove any that you might find. The reason why this is so important is because spyware typically latches itself onto the registry and onto various system files. Installing Service Pack 2 replaces most of your machine?s system files. If a spyware module has altered aspects of your system and then you start replacing system files, there is a good chance that Windows will lose network and Internet connectivity. If this does happen to you, you can fix the problem by downloading and running a utility called WinsockXPFix.exe. You can download this utility from

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm

Even though this utility will usually fix the problem, it is better to just scan the machine prior to installing the service pack and avoid the problem completely.

I tried to update a WinXP computer to Win8.1. The installation failed (longstory...not worth repeating).

Now at boot the screen appears offering the choice to boot to Windows Install or to the previous Windows Installation. The Windows Install is the default, so someone has to be ready to make the choice for the previous Windows installation, or the system will try to boot to the failed install. That causes a crash and an endless cycle of attempts until someone happens along to intervene and select the other choice. So if the power fails or an update installs, the machine goes into that endless cycle unless someone is present.

So how do I get rid of the Windows Installation choice. I've checked the boot.ini file...it's not there. There's got to be a way to go back to booting directly to the original XP OS. But I'm stumped.

Any ideas? Thanks In Advance.

Answer:Solved: Failed upgrade to Win8 ... how to get rid of boot choice "Windows Install"?

Two ideas, but no guarantees.

Boot to the XP installation CD and repair the boot.

Try EasyBCD.

Hey, all...

Working with a friend... I haven't seen the computer yet myself but from what she describes, she is seeing horizontal black lines across her monitor, most visible when in OE or MS Word.

It's an NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX400 adapter. She's recently downloaded and upgraded the drivers. We've tried changing refresh rates, screen resolutions, color quality, etc...

Anyone run into anything like this? Again, this is after an upgrade to Windows XP so it's like the adapter is not being recognized properly.

Solution would be VERY helpful.

Windows 10 is a little over a week away and the hype train is in full motion. Microsoft on Sunday published a video primarily targeting those that might still be grappling with the idea of upgrading to its new operating system.

Answer:Microsoft kicks off Windows 10 countdown with "10 Reasons to Upgrade" video series

Yeah, Windows 10 <b>literally</b> combines start menu and tiles...exactly what <b>nobody</b> asked for. We wanted tiles on the desktop, ala a new breed of gadgets. The obvious goal is to keep pushing people towards the start screen and limited, dumbed-down mobile apps on the PC. Yeah..not gonna happen. Windows 10 will tank just as bad if not worse than Windows 8 due to Microsoft's obsession with copying all of the competitions <I>worst</I> aspects.

For those of you who are interested in using the most currently available SP3 upgrade for Windows XP, this link will provide you with the file for the correct version - 5.1.2600.5508

http://www.download.windowsupdate.c..._c1996fe3afe721f3962a15d6666603ec857f4095.exe

This URL at the Softpedia site

and this URL at the Microsoft site

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...99-12af-42b2-aab1-b969a62c68a7&DisplayLang=en

are still providing the file for version 5.1.2600.3311, which is the original SP3 RC2 upgrade.

I upgraded today from version 5.1.2600.3311 to version 5.1.2600.5508 in both of my desktops. I have no idea what's new or different between the 2 versions, but I have noticed a snappier response.

(This is for information only and is not intended to encourage users to make the upgrade from SP2.)

I've been trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium 32 bit to 7 32 bit. After a few hours it does its final reboot and shows the message above when I log into Vista. Computer is Acer Aspire 6920.

I ran the upgrade tool and the only thing that stands out to me is that is seems to have an issue with the Intel Pro Wireless thing. I updated the driver and software but still get the same warning. I uninstalled lots of software that I thought might be causing issues but still nothing, although the computer is running much faster now. I've been at it for weeks...

I located the setuperr log and see quite a few lines similar to:

2012-05-28 17:14:25, Error [0x080654] MIG Path not found for move target \\?\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\index.dat; attempting to create it[gle=0x00000003]
2012-05-28 17:14:25, Error [0x080656] MIG Failed to restore file \\?\C:\$INPLACE.~TR\Machine\DATA\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\i ndex.dat to \\?\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History\History.IE5\index.dat[gle=0x00000003]

The complete setuperr file is attached.

I really don't want to do a clean install, I have a ton of programs and games I've gotten from giveawayoftheday.com that I cannot reinstall. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Attempting upgrade: "This version of windows cannot be installed"

If you really have IE5 then obviously that needs to be upgraded to IE9. Run your Windows Updates in Vista to make sure everything is fully up to date including SP's.

If there are issues flagged during the Upgrade Advisor phase before install begins, be sure to resolve all of them. If in doubt uninstall the program or device in Control Panel or Device Manager.

Type msconfig in Start Search box, rightclick result to Run as Admin, uncheck everything in msconfig>Startup and >Services tabs (after Hiding All MS Services), reboot then try Upgrade again.

Remember that you are struggling here to get an inferior in-place Upgrade. Nothing compares to a fresh Clean Install which will teach you a lot about your computer. With Win7 backup imaging you can save a backup image once set up so you never have to reinstall again - just reimage the HD or replacement in 20 minutes.

I am in charge of 2 Compaq CQ2815EA from PCWorld (*spits*) for my companies social club.

They came installed with Windows 7 Home Premium, and being a social club they were reluctant to pay to upgrade to Pro (I may have some swing with that this time). As such, and due to the environment the machines are being used in, I used some registry hacks to prevent users messing with the system where possible. (Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly what tweaks I employed).

Now it's come for the Windows 10 upgrade.

I have used the Media Creation Tool, both directly on the machine in question and to create installation media (USB).

The install starts off OK (under the administrative logon).

Then we get the first reboot, I get the black screen with the grey progress bar "Loading Files" and then nothing.

The monitors built in error message reports "Out of Range" (It would normally report "Cable Not Connected" when there is no signal).

It goes like this for ages, and as I can't leave the machine unattended I reset the machine, I got the same error and then eventually the windows 7 login.

Logging in gives me an error message as to why Windows could not install.

So far I have received 2 different messages

The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation

The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation

I just checked my Win 7 update... Read more

You can extract the ISO and run it from a folder in the machines? Did you remove all AV programs before the upgrade?

You may get better results if you post your question at the Windowsten forum.

So, I am planning on buying a new hard drive for my computer, and since Windows 10's activation is based on hardware, will I still have the free upgrade?

Answer:Windows 10 "Free upgrade" after hardware change?

Yes. It's tied to the motherboard, not a specific hard drive.

Software:

I am currently 'using' Portshutter V2 rel.4 (as far as I can tell. This version number was found in "portshutter.chm").

Operating System:

Windows 7 Professional.

Hardware:

FUJITSU LifeBook T5010
System Serial Number: R9706820
Enclosure Type: Notebook

Windows 7 Business (build 7600)
Install Language: English (United States)
System Locale: English (United States)

Problem Statement:

First and Foremost: I would like to impress the fact that this computer is neither stolen, nor has the system been compromised in any way. I simply upgraded from Windows Vista and immediately encountered problems relating to configurations I had not administrated.

Before the upgrade to Windows 7, I had disabled the software, "Portshutter" from affecting my preferences and settings. When I upgraded, these settings were set to disallow connections of new devices including, but not limited to: Universal Serial Bus (U.S.B.) and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (S.A.T.A.) devices. Additionally, the upgrade has set an administrator password for this program (a password other than the administrator password for the Windows account). Without this password preferences and settings of this program can not be changed without this password. Additionally, this program can NOT be uninstalled wi... Read more

I wanted to upgrade Windows 10 November Update to Anniversary Update. I ran the Windows 10 Upgrade Tool and it said "Display is not compatible"

Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics
Direct X 12
1st Monitor: 1920x1080
2nd Monitor: 1360x768

Thank you!

Answer:Windows 10 Upgrade Tool says "Display is not compatible"

You might check to see if you have any remote access drivers installed like LogMeIn, Teamviewer, GoToMyPC, etc. Look for them in Device Manager and just delete/uninstall them.

You can always reinstall anything if still needed.

Hi, tonight the update for upgrading to Windows 10 was downloaded even though I didn't reserve a copy of Windows 10 and I'm filling happy about Windows 7. I've uninstalled the update KB3035583 from my computer and hided it from being updated in the future. Still the notification "Upgrade to Windows 10-Get started" remained on the windows update screen. Is there any way to get rid of it as well so that I wouldn't click by mistake the get started button? Thank you.
