Laptop - Vista - Very slow on internet & even media player is slow

Question: Laptop - Vista - Very slow on internet & even media player is slow

hi all,

it's been a long time since I have had to post something about my problems in these forums. Well over a year as I have had my laptop for over a year now. This may seem like a similar thread to most that have been put up recently but I think it is quite different.

Ever since I have upgraded to IE8 I have noticed Vista be very slow. It could be to do with IE8 but I think that the slowness of my machine has been since before then...according to my wife. Has her facebook shennanegans broken the laptop???!

Here is a list of problems I am getting:
Long start up times. They aren't bothering me that much, just seem to be a bit longer than normal.
Very long time from when Vista has loaded and I can actually do somehting (15 minutes just now to access an mp3 on my desktop and it kept skipping for about 5 minutes before it stops skipping and playing the track normally)
Extremely slow at logging onto the internet. I mean that it takes minutes, literally minutes for IE8 to even display the very first internet page. After that it is slow, but not as bad...still frustrating though.
Changing between programs seems to take a few seconds.
Accessing my computer or my documents is like a game of russian roulette, will it let me or won't it.....£900 on it won't!!!!
On mp3 tracks, if you go back to a certain point in the track it will take a few seconds to actually complete the task

I have about 26gig free on my hard drive. But about 80 gig is used up for photo's as I am trying to be a photographer. I don't want to be losing these but also haven't got 80gigs worth of dvd's to back them up.

Can anyone point out some tips to help speed up my system. I hope it's not a hijack this type thing as part of me feels guilty cos I only contribute a little to the forums (usually in the photography section).

any help will be greatly appreciated and thanks.

Preferred Solution: Laptop - Vista - Very slow on internet & even media player is slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi my first instinct is to get your self an external hdd and transfer your files folders etc to it then visit the folks in security and hijack if nothing else lets rule out any possibity of infection. when you upgraded to ie8 was it still in beta, what av and firewall are you using. have you run your av, can windows update same for windows defender, i know its a lot of questions but the answers could be helpfull

I bought a new Sony Vaio LS 25 E computer with Vista Home Premium & 2 G of RAM. I have it plugged into my DLink DI-634M router (not using the wireless capabilities). Previously, I had a Vaio with Windows XP before and had blazing fast internet and smooth Windows Media Center operation (with 1 G of RAM).

I use Firefox and the internet is painfully slow. Not only that but Windows Media Center is choppy and going through all the menus is slow/choppy/frustrating. I have not changed my ISP provider or anything else since I got the new computer. I use Norton Antivirus but have disabled the phishing filter.

Are there fixes or tweaks I can perform on this otherwise beautiful machine to make it run better? My other applications run pretty well but since I use the internet and WMP most of the time it has been a very frustrating few days...

Could it be my drivers (even though they came preinstalled)? Is it my router? Do I need a Windows Vista compatible one?

Answer:New computer - Internet & Win Media Player SLOW

I had internet issues with vista, the internet was working fine, and then it became really slow.
I had xp installed on the same computer, so I tried the internet through xp and it worked fine.
I tried absolutely everything in trying to find a solution. Through this forum we found that the issue was the driver for the network card. It had installed an update for this device 10 days previously, and it worked fine for the 10 days. So we didn't think that it was the network card.
Until someone saw the message posted on this forum, and had the same problem. He installed an older driver for the network card. So I justed rolled back the driver for mine, and bingo the internet was back to working fine. I don't know if this willl help, but it is worth trying. Good Luck

I am migrating my music files to an NAS / Network drive. Explorer does an OK job transfering files off the PC and on to the network drive.

I set MP11 to look to "L:\Shared\Music" to add to library. It takes about 20 seconds per file to add to the library. Since it is not actually moving the file just finding the address I don't know why it is taking so long.

For the files it has added, MP does an OK loading and playing.

Any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Tom
PS XP and WMP11 on another PC on same NAS work fine

Answer:Slow Library Update with Media Player+ Vista + NAS

Try checking to see if the option to add volume information is checked before you add the file - if it's checked, WMP will analyse the track when it's added and record the average volume and other bits and pieces of info like that.

Hello,

I have for the last few weeks, experienced an exceptionally slow startup for internet explorer and media player. When I try to start explorer, it freezes for about one minute before you can click on any links on the page. It also does this when a new window or tab is opened. Once the page has opened and the approx. minute lag has passed, it functions normally and I can browse the web. Clicking on any link which opens a new window will again cause this lag, but only on the new page. I can click back to the already opened page and browse normally. I have upgraded to IE 7 but the problem is the same.

For Windows Media player, a movie will open but no controls become available for about 30 seconds. Once the controls are available, it functions normally. If I leave the program open, I can click on different movies and they will pop up and function normally without the lag which is present on the initial startup of the program.

In addition, my on-screen ibm controls for volume have ceased to be displayed and my touchpad/trackpoint won't retain changes made so that only the trackpoint is on, with the touchpad off. It reverts back to certain settings upon computer restart.

I have run Norton, Adaware, cwshredder, AVG, ATF cleaner, Ewido, Kaspersky, Panda, fixwareout, vundofix, registry cleaner, and many others including the ones listed in the preparation section of this site, but the problem persists. A few weeks ago, I would get the occasional pop-up from... Read more

Answer:VERY SLOW Internet Explorer and Media Player Startup

Hi Tom and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

There's nothing showing in your log, so let's try an online scan. Could be more of a Windows problem.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on located at the bottom of the page.
A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place*
Begin the scan by selecting If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Post back the Panda log.

Hello hello. Windows 7 Home Premium, 3GB RAM, Intel Core i7 on a Dell Studio 1457 laptop.Refer to the topic HERE for boopme's history on my malware checks from a few days ago and reinstallation of Avira 2012 as it stopped working with similar symptoms as described below. The problems that exist now are,Video files begin to lag at random during playback. One moment it's playing fine for a good while and suddenly, lagging. Same issue in Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player. Also, VLC takes an unbearably long time to execute.Photoshop takes too long to execute, then lags when I'm working on large files.Firefox slows down and freezes at random as well.I run Ccleaner regularly and defrag once a month. Hello,

I have a Gateway P-6825 laptop running Windows Vista 32-bit, Service Pack 2.  The processor is T5250 1.5GHz and it has 2 GB RAM memory. I realize it's a slightly older machine and the processor is relatively slow, but it seems to have slowed down a bit in the last few months when I access Internet pages.  I am not getting any signs of malware infection but I'm wondering whether it is laden with too many programs or something else.  Any insight you can provide is truly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi all,
I bought a new digital camera and when I play back video clips with media player it is very slow. It plays back fine in the camera but after I download them and play them back it really slows up and plays chunky like when you download from a website. The camera records 60 frames a second.
Is there any way to speed things up with media player or change the settings or something? I have media player 9. I email a clip to a friend and he said it played fine on his computer.
Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I just installed XP for the first time last week, and all is well, except that video plays very slowly in Windows Media player. It sounds like a record playing at the wrong speed.

I tried updating to the newest version of Media Player, but no luck. Still slow.

Music files play well, and video in other formats is fine, but WMP is always slow.

Suggestions?

Jeff

I have just ripped an audiobook cd (10 tracks - 75 mins) to my pc.Normally this would be done at something like 20-30 secs per track, but this time the process was very slow - taking about 40 mins to rip the complete cd.  What could be the reason for this?  I have had no problems before, although program opening generally has been a bit sluggish recently.I have AVG AntiSpyware and AVG Antivirus and use CCleaner regularly, Windows XP SP3, 768 ram.

Answer:Windows Media Player - cd rip very slow

Further to my previous post -I've just tried again with the second cd and the problem seems worse - it's up to track 7 and it's taken 48 mins.  Also, opening new pages is taking much longer than usual - opening my home page (in Firefox) took a couple of minutes instead of a couple of seconds.Any suggestions about what I can do would be appreciated.

I upgraded to WMP 11 a few months ago. It takes a solid 1/2 minute to fully load. By that I mean the window opens immediately, but the drive futzes around for another 1/2 minute doing who knows what. When it's doing that, if I click on, say, an FM radio station I want to listen to, then click the minimize button, it takes about 1/2 minute for it to start playing and minimize. In the meantime I can't work on what I was doing before I decided I wanted some music.

I unchecked the Player option to "Connect the the Internet" thinking that might have been the reason, but that does nothing. Anybody know why it is so slow compared to 10?

Hello,

So recently I have noticed that I have been having stuttering and stopping problems with VLC media player 2,0.1 when I play videos that start to stutter and then freeze the computer. Then I noticed that my computer when get really slow overall after I shut down VLC media player once the slow down occurred. I tried to use Windows Media Player but encountered the same issues. This led me to try to see if the problem was some sort of infection so I ran a partial McAfee scan, Malware Bytes scan, SuperAntiSpyware scan, and finally a SpyBot scan all of which found different things but none that solved that problem. Eventually this led to me trying to upgrade my Windows XP to Windows 7 to see if that alleviated the problem, which it hasn't. I would really appreciate any help I can get on this matter. Currently my CPU usage according to System Task Manager is 100% even though nothing significant is running.

Thank you in advance.

Hello all,

Whenever I tried to change the attributes of the song in my Media Player 10 (e.g. Album name, or artist name), my Media Player suddenly 'stuck' for a long time. After some long time, the player went back to normal again.

I've also tried to change the attribute of multiple songs altogether through advanced tag editor, but then the player always stuck. It shows "changing meta data" menu for a VERY long time. Then after several hours, the player went back to normal, and the attributes were changed successfully. So it seem that the player needs a very long time to change any attributes.

I really need some suggestion here. Thanks in advance.

My pc has suddenly become very slow booting up (3-4 minutes) It takes ages to get past the Windows XP screen. Just as its gets past that screen , the windows melody play, but is very broken up.
Once booted up (no error messages), I can use the internet okay. However, if I try and play any video or music in Windows Media Player, it is very slow and breaks up.

Just before this started happening I did encounter a virus, which has corrupted my start menu (most of the programs have dissapered off the menu).

However I have ran various Virus checkers and none have resolved either issue. I have posted 2 threads which the Admins have been helping me with, but have now suggested its performance rather than virus related.

The results are included in these posts re-virus checking

Answer:Slow boot up / media player

If you have corrupt/damaged system files...then your atlernatives are to either try a repair install of XP...or try to run the sfc /scannow command.

Although there was some commentary about this being a hardware issue...damaged system files seems a more likely suspect, IMO.

As for the WMP issue...have you tried using a different player...to see if the problem is WMP?

Answer:How do you slow down both the pitch AND speed using VLC Media Player

I don't know if its the same on all versions or not but on both ends of the slider relating to the current position there should be a double arrow, left pointing (slower) on the left and right pointing (faster) on the right. Each click on the left makes it go a little slower. I don't know if it can do that with any video or if its limited to compatible codecs.

Hello all,

Havent been around here for a while but Im having a recurring problem with Windows Media Player for XP version 9. When I play a .wmv file the video plays as smooth as anything without any jerks in sound or playback...however, when playing a .mpg file it comes on straight away and soon starts jerking after about 2seconds playback. I have tried playing around with the connection settings and buffering but nothing seems to work.

I am running it on an AMD Athlon 2GHz comp with 512MB DDR and Nvidia Geforce 4 MMX graphics. I have a 512kbps cable connection to the internet via Blueyonder Broadband.

I have done the usual routine of updating drivers etc...and also ran spybot checks, hijackthis, adaware and CWshredder. Dont know what else!

Hope someone can shead the proverbial light..
Danny.

Answer:Windows Media Player slow play...

I am by no means an expert on internet video but I've put a couple of them on my website and found that .wmv's are much smaller and faster than .mpg/.mpegs. I don't think it's your system that is at fault I think it has to do with how fast you can receive the data off the internet. If you download the mpegs you will probably find that they play just as well as the .wmv's. It's just that the wmv's stream better directly from the internet.

Hope this helps.

This problem just started 1 day ago.
I noticed my computer was going really slow. All that was running was my songs, via windows media player 11 (from hereafter, abbreviated as 'wmp11'). I saw that switching siongs, pausing them was taking a lot of time, so i restarted my pc, started wmp11 again, started playing songs. and i also opened task manager to see how much space wmp11 took.
After about 5-10 minutes of playing, windows media player 11 gets really slow and songs will start to skip... cpu usage jumps to 95%+. This never used to happen ever before! I have a Core 2 Due, 2.4 GHz with 2gb of RAM, nvidia 8500 GT.

I've scanned for spyware and viruses, and have found nothing.
Please give me a true solution, and not suggestions to use other programs. None are better than wmp11 at managing files in library, etc.

Anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution, or anyone know what might be causing this? Thanks for any help!
Please reply as soon as possible.

Do you have a CD lens cleaner handy ?It could be dirty and having trouble reading disks. The other option to check is in Tools - Options - Devices and select your CD player. Click Advanced and uncheck "error correction"The final setting involves the device settings incontrol panel. See if it's set to PIO mode for the controller rather than DMA mode. Try the first two though and see how you get on.

Some media is not indexed in such a way that WMP can play it at different speeds. It is just the way the movie has been coded up, nothing you can do about it. You can convert the movie (recode it) into WMV format by using Any Video Converter or perhaps Windows Movie Maker and WMP will be able to adjust play speeds on properly created WMV's without any problems.

sorry if this is in the wrong forum..you cant post new threads in "everything software"?

So basically I've given up on wmp 10 and was going to just re-install it. (btw, is there a file I should save to keep track information? like playcounts and stuff?) It takes like 20 minutes to actually start, and if I look at a playlist or something, it takes like 10 mintues to view the playlist..with only 4 songs in it.

Anyways, when I try to re-install, i get the error, "It was not possible to complete setup. Windows Media Player 10 was not installed. To update windows, run Windows Media Player 10 Setup again."

Well, I seem to have found my solution on the microsoft website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win.../0073.mspx#EDC
sorry for being stupid...But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.
I went into C:\Documents and Settings\All Users and right clicked on shared documents (it says my documents on the site..does that matter? I only have one account..why are they "shared"?) and click properties..but I see no security tab, just general and sharing. And I see no "Group or user names box" in either tab.

any help? Am I following it wrong?

I am helping a friend, and this one is a mess. The laptop runs in slow motion (worse than I have ever seen & I have an IT degree and have helped lots of people over the years!). Media player won;t play, ShockWave won't work, YouTube won't work, Spybot can't download necessary files for install, AVG won't update, etc. Also, this person let someone tunnel in, but I have serous suspicions about said person, so if you can tell if there is anything malicious in that regards, it would be helpful. Finally, I had alter the auto start programs just to get HiJackThis to run. Hi everyone,

Does anybody know why, on dial up connection, and on Windows Media Player, .avi and .wmv files download quickly and .mpeg files download very slow?

Do I not have mpeg properly enabled for my Windows Media Player?

Thanks,

Larry

Answer:Windows Media Player - mpeg slow to download.

It best u download the movie clip before playing in WMP, and that too when using a dial-up.

I Have Already Followed The Steps In The Read And Run Me First Article. What Should I Do Now?

Answer:I need Help. My Windows Media Player and computer is running Extremely Slow!

Welcome to MGs!

First please disable Spybot's Teatimer function as requested in the READ ME. It can be a big resource hog and frequently makes it difficult to remove malware issues.

Since you are indicating you are having performance problems, you should consider uninstalling BigFix which is a notorious resource hog. Do you really think you will need or use this. If so, you should at a minimum stop it from loading at startup and run it only when needed.

You must go back to step 7 of the READ ME and install HijackThis properly. You have it where we request it not be installed:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe

Do you use the below:
C:\Program Files\PromptCast\PromptCast.exe

I'm starting to look thru your logs now.

I want to slow down my playback.  I understand how to go to Now Playing, then Enhancements, then Play Speed Settings and have done just that.  However, it's not working for me.  If I use this feature either with the little bar or by hitting "slow" the sound will go silent.  Then, if I hit "normal" the playback sound comes back just fine.  As an experiment, I hit "fast" and again, the sound disappeared.  Why does it do this, if the sound playback features are obviously allowed to be slowed down or sped up?  Thanks!- Phoebe

Answer:Windows Media Player 11 (sound disappears when I try to slow down playback)

Try Audacity...Free.

I just recently reinstalled XP and downloaded WMP 10. Everytime I play an mp3 or stream video from the web (mms), the system slows to a crawl. I can barely move the mouse and ctrl + alt + del doesn't work because WMP takes up so many resources. Most of the time I have to resort to resetting my computer. Am i missing a codec or do I need to install a driver or something? This is really annoying. This happens with all software. When i stream w/ Winamp same problem. -regards.

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. So I upgraded from a Lenovo y510p around in August to a Y700 and immediately noticed that it was better at gaming back for everything else it was slow. I thought it must have been an update or maybe games but I have unistalled the games with plenty of space left and its driving me insane because even on slower laptops I will never have it get stuck or loading with simple stuff like youtube or selecting another song in windows media player. Any idea how to fix this? I have always set to High Perfomance mode, disabled tons of services from the boot and msconfig and very few applicactions running from what I know. Thanks

Answer:Lenovo Y700 Very slow and stuttering with Youtube and Windows Media Player

Hi takotakumi,  There are 2 posibile reason for the issue. 1st is software and the 2nd is hardware. Lets try to check both. For software try loading the system in safe mode, to check if there was any 3rd party software was causing the issue. If it is software issue, try and isolate the software causing the issue by un-installing the software.  For hardware try running Lenovo Solution Center or Lenovo Companion for hardware diagnostic back in windows normal mode. If you find any hardware issue after the diagnostic test then better to call Lenovo Warranty Support for assistance. You can get in-touch with Lenovo by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page under Support. Also try updating the drivers for the video card of the system.Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers,

Alright, so today i replaced my dad's powersupply and got an "Error Loading OS" Message for his system when it previously had XP on it. So i said forget messing with it ill just put vista on it and call it a day.

After putting the vista disk in it seemed to go pretty slow compaired to how it was on mine. But in the end it took about 1hr to 1hr and 1/2 to install completely. After installing it took forever to do the first boot up and after it booted i could not move the mouse more than one direction every 2 minutes or so. The system would apparently freeze or become completely bogged down for no reason.

So, this is a fresh install of Vista on a fairly good machine. Any reason why it is running as though it has the worst specs in the world?

PS: It runs fine in Safe Mode.....

The System configuration is as follows:

OS: Vista Ultimate 64bit
MoBo: Asus P5NSLI
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Graphics Cards: Nvidia 8600GT x2 SLI
Hard Drives: 3 various, one 80, one 200g, one 300g
RAM: 4gigs of corsair or something of the form.. namebrand to say the least

I Cant think of what else might help... it is doing this for NO REASON what so ever that i can find.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Hi all,My broadband connection recently started acting up and becoming very slow. I would restart the modem and router (Buffalo) and it would work quick as it should for a few minutes before becoming slow again. I came to the conclusion that I needed a new router and thus I went and bought a Linksys Wireless-N router. I usually have my laptop connected wirelessly and two desktops wired up. So my router arrived today and I installed it. Everything seems to work, but the internet is still a little slow. It is faster than before I replaced the router though. I also recently applied to increase from 2mb to 10mb. I'm not sure if they've done it yet, but it's probably best to get in touch with Virgin. Does anyone know if the 2mb Cable Modem from Virgin, it is grey and has green flashing lights at the front, can support 10mb? Speed tests online has shown only 2-3mb speeds. So i'm thinking it hasn't happened yet.Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Hello all!

My laptop is running really really REALLY slowly lately.  I haven't downloaded anything new but when I look at my task manager I see so many things running.  I don't want to go in and just start deleting things b/c I am sure I would end up deleting something important.  Tried to run windows update and it didn't run   Every time I try and do anything ( Especially online) pages don't load, pc freezes, it is really frustrating. Any help is appreciated

I know this sounds like a goofy problem, but I've got a old P4 3.0 that I'm using as a media center, running Vista Ultimate. It plays analog TV fine, plays DVD (video) just great, but when I put a DVD in the drive, and the DVD menu loads up, moving from one choice to another is increadibly slow. On the order of 20-30 seconds from the time i press down to the time that the selection changes.

The mouse seems normal speed when making menu selections though.

I'm using a standard microsoft remote and microsoft IR receiver.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hi, I have all my logs posted here and the follow up post.

First, my computer is extremely slow. I especially notice it at startup but don't know what i can delete/disable. I like the spybot startup disable b/c it will mostly tell me what i am disabling.

Second, sometimes my MS Media Player stops playing sound. I can't remember what the error message says b/c since i followed steps 1-8 it now works fine.

Third, my display window on some programs will have the tool bar menu item background in gray boxes (i.e. File, Edit, View, etc). Then at times the task bar will blink between the standard blue and the gray.

Can you check out my logs and help clean some of this up? Thanks, you geeks are great!

I'm a new user of Vista I seem to be having problems connecting to the internet.

I am using a WG111T dongle from Netgear and it works perfectly well with my Buffalo wireless router on my XP machine - drivers all up-to-date

However, when I plug it into my Vista machine I get very slow internet speeds, and when I ping google most times at least one packet timeouts. At other times it seems to be working perfectly - I just can't work out what is going on. At all times I am able to be signed into Gchat and send messages.

We also have a Vista laptop connecting to the internet fine and getting normal speeds.

I've tried various fixes none of which have worked and I'm starting to feel like I'm banging my head off the wall. If anyone could point me in the direction of a fix for this I'd be eternally grateful.

I should add this is a fresh install of Vista SP2

I have found hundreds of questions about this issue but no solution to fix my particular problem. Recently, I had to replace my harddrive and ungraded to Windows Vista (w/SP 1) in the process. Since then, webpages load much slower. I have high-speed DSL service, but I'm 99% confident this is b/c of Vista as my work laptop, which runs with XP, is at least four times faster. I run both using a wireless router. I even hooked my desktop directly to the modem but with no sucess. In addition, I have installed IE 8 Beta and have reset all settings. Below are my computer specs. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So for the past few days, my main machines net connection has come to a crawl. I've had no issues with my laptop running vista (32 bit), my ipod touch seems fine, and I tri-boot OSX86 and ubuntu on my main rig and they run fine as well. The connection is so bad on my main vista install that I'm lucky to load a page in under 5 mins, and steam wont even log in.

What could possibly cause a specific install's net connection to die?

Answer:Slow internet in Vista x64

It's time to scan for virus. Use AVG and other combination of spyware softwares.

I just installed Vista on this machine that I built yesterday and I'm connected to a Linksys WRT54G through a Linksys WMP54G wireless card. Now the connection is strong and I haven't gotten any drops, using either Firefox or IE is incredibly slow. It takes about 2 minutes on average for a page to load. I'm typing this on my XP machine that is using the same card and speeds are perfectly fine.

I've tried running the command 'netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled' and restarting but that did not solve my problem. Is there any other setting that I can change that will help me? TIA

I have just bought a new Dell computer with Vista on. I was with Tiscali and have had to buy a router in order to get connected to the Internet.Anyway, having managed this, I now find that my Internet is really slow and websites are taking an age to download. This was not the case with my old computer. I'm not sure whether this is due to the new computer, Vista, my Internet settings or what. Any advice much appreciated.

Let me preface by saying I've spent the last evening searching and trying to find a solution. Nothing.

On my vista system via firefox or IE, I am only getting download speeds of 2.0kb - 5.0kb/sec - basically 56k - my Macbook, EEE, or Dell laptop on the same network are seeing 800kbps+

Things I have tried:
- Disabling autotuning, setting autotuning to high (both suggested fixes)
- Disabiling UAC, Firewall
- Disabling IPv6
- Rolling back Realtek drivers on my network cards to previous versions
- Updating Realtek drivers to latest version.

None have been successful. Nothing. The system is literally running NO software outside of Vista Ultimate w/ Media Center, IE7, and Firefox - so nothing that isnt included in a vanilla Vista install is the root cause.

Any suggestions? Not sure when this started, as I rarely use network on my HTPC, but I needed to last night to grab a file and noticed this issue.

Answer:Very slow internet in Vista 32.

Is it only http affected? or is a cmd line ftp also affected?

Hello folksBit unusual this. Friend asked me to have a look at her brand new 2 day old Laptop. She bought it from Dell. She had an old desktop and really all she wanted to use it for was simple household accounts, for which she used some template, maybe from Works or something of the like. She told them what she wanted to use it for, and of course they persuaded her to add Microsoft Office, at about ?180 extra. Now there dont seem to be any templates whatever for budget, birthday cards, flyers etc in Office. Oh, and its Office 2007 which someone told me is not good at all. I also find it running v slow and sluggish. Its a core duo pentium, but just 512 ram which perhaps isnt great for Vista. She said that she thinks she has 30 days to return it, Im not sure about that, is it normal? My questions;1 Should she (can she?) ask them to take back Office? And maybe upgrade the ram to 1 gig?2 Is Office 2003 compatible with Vista? I think she has a copy of it.3 Has office got none of these family-friendly templates / projects?4 Can she return everything and get a refund? I feel there must be pcs with better software bundles than what Dell offered?thanksh

Answer:Laptop With Vista Slow

Vista really needs a mininum of a gig of ram to run but two gig to run effectively. You have not mentioned what version of Vista,if preminum or above, try disabling the Aero feature to speed things up.I would think MS Works combined with the free Open Office would do everything your friend asks.Personally for the requirements your friend needs,i would return this system and start again and look for something that has two gig of ram.I doubt very much she would need MS Office, that extra money would be better spent on the ram upgrade.

Answer:Slow Wireless Internet in Vista

So I bought Vista Home Premium x64 from Windows Marketplace and have been running it for around 2 weeks. Everything seems ok, except the internet is extremely slow when I start Vista and continues to be extremely slow for approximately 30 minutes to an hour afterwards.

Hardware:
Athlon X2 4400+ (not overclocked)
2gb Corsair RAM
Asus A8N-SLI Premium
Corsair HX620w

using the latest Nvidia chipset drivers (not Beta).

Vista starts up and, doesn't matter if I use Firefox or IE, pages will not load. Tabs will open, the loading indicator will move, but nothing loads. Doesn't matter what the address is, nothing seems to work. This will last for 30-60 minutes or so. Afterwards, things seem to work fine.

I've tried the Netsh fix (winsock reset, etc).
I've tried disabled the autotuning in an administrater command prompt.
Disabled the phishing filter.
Disabled the IPv6.

All of these solutions I've found on Mozilla or various other forums. None of them have solved the problem. It's really quite annoying and I'm thinking of either 1) reinstalling Vista from scratch or 2) reinstalling XP and waiting a week or so for SP1, then integrating that into my Vista install.

Any thoughts on what I can do to alleviate this?

Answer:Extremely slow internet on Vista

ping something you know should have good response time, ie. your gateway or like www.google.com. Better yet, do a traceroute.

Hello,

My Dell XPS 1330 came with Vista installed and for a couple of months my internet was fast, but when I changed my service provider from Comcast to road runner a month ago, my internet slowed down significantly. I hardwired the modem to the laptop and speeds are below 2mbps. I cant stream the videos on youtube. I came across another thread on this forum which mentioned ot rollback the driver and since it was grayed out, I tried to download a previous version on broadcoms website, cant find a version older than v10 on their website.... Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh! one thing worth mentioning is my wireless seems to be fine since my internet speed seemed to be lot better when I use wireless...so would getting a wireless router solve the problem?

Thanks,
Jay

I have two computers, a pokey old HP running XP and a new Toshiba Satellite running Vista Home 32. I am connecting to the internet wirelessly.

The XP runs very fast and the VISTA connects at about a deathly 28 kbps.

I've tried updating drivers, rolling back old ones and trying different browsers to no avail. I've run AVG and Ad-Aware. No problems.

Of interest, if I run both computers at the same time even with the VISTA disconnected, the XP will run at slow speeds.

Any ideas?

I read somewhere that the problem may be due to the driver updates that Windows does... but I don't understand how to do driver-related things. I don't know what my driver is... and I can't seem to figure that out. Can someone PLEASE help me?! This internet speed is slowly killing me!

Ok, load up Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and look in the Network section and see what make/model of network card you have (Usually Intel, Realtek, Broadcom etc), then visit their website and d/l driver that matches your card.

I have Microsoft Security essentials installed dual core

Check task manager again and see how much memory is used with the browser you're using. 1GB ram is a bit low for Vista.

Hello,

I recently purchased a Gateway 4300-05 (vista 64 bit). It worked well for about 2 days, and now the internet is very very slow, both browsing and downloading. I also have a laptop running xp that is on the same network and is still blazingly fast. I am unsure as to what information you may need, but I am not really doing anything special. My antivirus program is Avira. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Hi all,

Last Thursday my pc downloaded and installed the latest set of updates and since then the Internet speed has been sluggish at best and non-existant at worst.

I contacted my ISP and they did all their tests and announced that the signal was good and I might have a virus, so I got a bit paranoid and ran scan after scan (after the nightmare of trying to get the latest updates). I ran these with Zone Alarm Extreme and Spyware Doctor (but not together) and all the results were clean.

So I'm wondering if the latest Updates are to blame; one of the kids' laptops has exactly the same problem (he uses a router while I use a cable) and he downloaded the updates at the same time.

Interestingly the other kid's laptop seems to be untouched, but he has 32 bit Vista as opposed to our 64 bit, and it appears that we're all using different browsers (IE8, Mozilla and Chrome)

Anyone else having this problem?

Answer:Slow internet since last Vista Update

Hi ashtree50,
I'm not aware of problems, such as you're having, after the recent updates.
Just in case your ISP was on the right track I suggest you scan with SuperAntiSpyware & Malwarebytes. Both have a free version & have a good track record as far as flushing out anything suspicious. Reboot after running each scan.
Another thought. Have you done your computer "housework" on a regular basis? [ ie defrag, disk clean up, error checking.]
Let us know how you go.

SUBJECT: Major Slowdown in Upload Speed after using MS Vista?

Here is my configuration:

-HP Pavilion Slimline s3100y PC
-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
- Intel Core 2 Duo processor E4500 (2.2GHz)
- 2GB DDR2-667MHz dual channel SDRAM (2x1024)
- 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS, DVI-I, HDMI
- 400GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
- 16X DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
- 15-in-1 memory card reader, USB, headphone port
- Integrated 7.1 channel sound w/front audio ports
- HP wireless keyboard and HP wireless optical mouse

CABLE INFO:
Cox HSI Premier Service 12down/1up
Direct-No Router
Modem to Computer connection: Ethernet Cable
Modem:
AMBIT U10C018
Cable RF MAC Addy: 00197E3C4E18

When I first start up MS Vista I get speeds of about 15Mbps Down/1Mbps Up with Ping times in the 20-30ms range. That is quite acceptable and higher than the advertised speed for my HSI Cable connection

After a few mins I notice things starting to slow down and taking longer to load. Clearly, running Vista is killing my Broadband Connection speeds...but WHY?

I run another speed test from Speedtest.net and find that I have dropped to about 10Mbps Down/100kbps Up and my Ping times have gone up to over 300ms!!

I can then shut down Vista and when I start it back up...I am back to what I should have in the 15/1 25ms range?

I went throught this test sequence a number of times, at different times of the day, and this problem is very consistent as to the speeds when I start up Vista and after it has... Read more

Answer:Slow Internet Speed When Using Vista

I had hoped to get some help with this very annoying issue?

This can't be that unusual?

Surely someone has some ideas?

Here are 3 more Speed Tests all done within a few minutes this evening.

1. Right after opening Vista speeds are fine as is the Ping time.
2. After running for 13 mins speeds (especially Upload) and Ping times are terrible
3. After shutting down Vista and restarting it, speeds are fine again!

What could be doing this???

Thanx for any help I am offered....

Hello, i live in two houses. In the first the connection works well. In the other, it works very bad. I know it's not the routher in the second one because all the other comp (including some laptops, so they use wi-fi connection) work perfectly. I'm connected to the internet and my connection is excellent, but when i go on a site, or when i want to see a video, it takes a minute long to load a page and a lot more to load videos. I tried evrything i saw on the internet, disabling the Ipv6, update my internet card, etc. But, nothing worked (I had a similar problem at my other house and it been solved by disabling the ipv6, but in this one it doesn't work).

I'm working on vista and my wi-fi card is broadcom 802.11. I have an acer extensa 5420. Thanks for the help.

Answer:Slow internet, vista, wi-fi, broadcom 802.11: don't know what to do.

Hello

So I'm trying to help someone with their computer.

It's an HP-Compaq desktop, model number SR5233WM.

I used the HP Recovery software to restore the computer to factory default (Vista, bloatware, etc.), then removed most of the bloatware (including Norton).

However, the internet is extremely slow on the computer (plugged into my 1.5MB/s ADSL connection). The following (so far) time out):

Crucial.com's scanning utility's results page times out on IE and Firefox

Adobe Flash download page loads, but clicking download gets a time out

Windows Update comes up with a firewall error (even though I've disabled ALL firewalls including Windows firewall in order to attempt to resolve the issue), the error code is 80072EFE. So, Windows Update doesn't work at all.

I'm currently downloading Vista SP1 and SP2 on another computer to install to it, in hopes that MIGHT help the issue.

I've checked the NIC in Device Manager for driver updates, it reports itself up to date. I'm using a brand new ethernet cable from the computer to my modem-router (and had the cable connected to another computer earlier, which had no connectivity/speed issues at all with the internet).

Has anyone else experienced this issue/solved it/know any internet connectivity tweaks Vista needs/could use? I'm about to pull my hair out with this one!

Answer:Slow internet on Vista desktop

Update:

I've installed Vista SP1 and SP2, and cleaned all contacts on the NIC Ethernet connection -- no change.

This computer does only have 1GB of RAM, and in Performance section of Task Manager, it displays:

Physical Memory (MB)
Total 1014
Cached 525
Free 17

Free just want down to 16.

I can't browse the internet at all on the mentioned machine, using IE or Firefox.

Could the low RAM be the culprit?

Okay, I'm not sure I want to investigate further... I decided to open up Resource Monitor from Task Manager, and Memory was listing a few hard faults/second for several seconds... and now it's staying at 0. However, it shows only 55% Used Physical Memory...?

Even though I have a website attempting to load, Network is listing between 0-2 Kbps...
