I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Copying file to other users accounts

Try the Public folder and tell the other user that the file is there.

Hi All,

I have an .exe file sitting on w2k server (ntfs drive) that's accessed by all users. I'm trying to setup a permission that users can only READ and EXECUTE from the server and they can't copy the .exe file to their local drives. There's no Deny Copy I could set on the server. How do you accomplish this goal. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Melvin

Answer:Prevent users from copying .exe file from server

The only thing I can think of, depending on how many users you have and how computer savvy they are, is to make sure their computers are set to "Do not show hidden files or folders" and then make your executable a hidden file.

Hope this helps,

Quick question:

Is there any obstacle to transferring user account (personal data) from Vista to Windows 8?

Had a PC brought in, power surge killed the PSU and motherboard. Hard drive was fine, explained to client that data was salvageable, client said they would go ahead and shop for a notebook. Copied user account and personal data to USB flash drive. Was in the middle of copying to flash when client walked in with a new PC in the box, HP Pavilion (like the old one) preloaded with Windows 8. Now I must admit I have not worked on windows 8 much. If all the old data is 64 bit there shouldn't be a problem? What about 32 bit files?
Thanks in advance.

Right, for a start off I don't think I explained myself very well in the title - so I will have another go here.

I have a table of users that I have created (imported from a spreadsheet) to the tune of about 25000 users.

I have a list of calls from the IT Service Desk - however they have not linked the users active directory account into the call, just the callers surname and forename(s).

I want to link all the users calls to the possible users in the database in a separate table.

The tables I have are laid out as follows:

Users Table:

Code:
UserID - Autonumber [b]PK[/b]
User Active Directory Name - text [i](Actually their email address)[/i]
IT Calls:

Code:
Callid - number [i]Unique[/i] [b]PK[/b]
FirstName - text
Surname - text
Call Details - text
Linking Table:

Code:
UniqueID - Autonumber
UserID - number [b]FK[/b]
Callid - number [b]FK[/b]
PossibleDuplicate - Yes/No
Basically I want to write some sort of script that will go through my IT Calls table and query the users, at the moment I am doing it by hand using the query:

Code:
Like "*" & [Enter Name] & "*"
And I am having to enter users names like this, joe*bloggs (as some users Active Directory accounts have middle initials and some don't.)

I want all the users that return more than one result to tick the Possible Duplicate box so I can go through and look at these manually later.

Does that make sense? Any ideas on how I would go about writing a script for this??... Read more

I need some help in figuring out how to copy a whole bunch of files from a directory tree to a single directory. I looked at all the xcopy switches, but none of them look like they will do what I want it to do. If I use the /S switch, it will keep the directory structure. Any ideas?

I was thinking too hard about this. A gentleman from another forum kindly pointed out using the search tool to look for all the files in the root directory of the tree. Then, copy/paste the search results to my new folder.

Hello, I want to use a batch file to copy a file to my startup folder.

I used

copy myProgram.exe %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
But I get an error saying that the sytax is incorrect. However I can copy it to other locations.
Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Copying with batch file

Put double-quotes around the destination, like this :-

copy myProgram.exe "%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

The above should all be on one line, with a space between Start and Menu.
You need to do this with any path that contains spaces.

Do you guys know if there is anyway to copy the names of all the files that are in a specific folder ? I have a very big list of documents (About 2000) and if something should happen I would lose them all and I couldn't possibly remember them all. I'd like to know if there's any way I can copy the file names (not the actual files) and paste those names in Word or something, just so I can remember at least the file names. I would keep that document on a separate CD if anything should happen to my computer, I could still try and find those files again on the web. Thank you very much!

I own two PCs, one Vista and one XP. Last week, the Vista machine wouldn't boot up and I traced the issue to a failing hard drive, so I ordered a new one and temporarily connected both the new and old hard drives to my XP machine so that I could migrate the data across.

Initially I'd hoped to use Driveimage XML to copy the entire drive in one go but it failed; I assume that was because of the errors on the source disk. So I simply copied all the files over with Explorer, which worked for most of them but, as I'd expected, some folders failed to copy, such as Documents and Settings, Application Data and Users.

I realised that this was because they were locked to the user account on the Vista machine and found the Knowledge Base article about taking ownership of files and folders. I followed the instructions but hit a snag: when I select properties on one of those folders, the Security tab isn't there. The Security tab appears on other folders but on the ones that failed to copy there are only tabs for General, Sharing and Customize.

Without access to the Security tab, there's no way for me to gain ownership of these folders, is there? Is there any other way for me to copy the drive that will bypass this issue?

Answer:Solved: copying/emailing audio file

What format is the audio recording on the CD?
If it's a sound format that Windows commonly uses (just about anything except CD Audio) just copy/paste the file on to your hard drive.

To make another copy of the CD, just use burning software and choose "Copy Disc". The software will make a temporary copy on your hard drive, then it will tell you to change the CD for a blank one, then it will write the temporary data to it.

You may have a problem sending them by email though as most email providers impose a limit on the size of attachments. My limit is 3MB per email.

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Hi

I am having trouble copying files using Windows Explorer (XP SP2)

I have a digital photo frame and want to display the photos in date order

I copied 500 jpg files from various directories on my hard drive to a temp directory and sorted them by “Date Photo Taken”. Using Explorer’s bulk rename facility I renamed the files Xxxxx (101), Xxxxx (102) etc to Xxxxx (500). I then copied these to a SanDisk Ultra II photo card.

However when I put the photo card into the photo frame, the display was not in the correct order. It started at file 132 up to 500 then 101 to 131. I then deleted all the files on the SanDisk and tried again several times. It never put 101 first but the starting file was always different. I also tried a Sony MemoryStick Pro with the same result

I then tried copying the files to another directory on my hard drive. It is difficult to read the display counter accurately cause it goes so fast but I could tell that it didn’t start at 101 and after file 500 it stared at 101.

So why does Explorer do this and what is the solution?

I am preparing reports from a template, which is being updated as new elements are complete or problems are picked up.
The report template has a set of links to blank files and the following macro overwrites those links with those from an existing report. What I am interested to find out is whether I can ditch the middle-man in the process, which currently involves the creation of a temporary "Links" sheet where the template and donor file links are recorded and then used to update the links in the template file.
Anyone have any advice. I'm wondering if I can just read / write from the links as arrays, without the "Links" sheet?

Code:

Sub UpdateReportNewTemplate()
Dim fNameAndPath, I, RECIPlinks, DONORlinks As Variant, RECIP, DONOR As Workbook, oldlink, newlink As String
Set RECIP = ActiveWorkbook

Set DONOR = Workbooks.Open(fNameAndPath)

RECIPlinks = RECIP.LinkSources(xlExcelLinks)
DONORlinks = DONOR.LinkSources(xlExcelLinks)

' create links sheet

If Not IsEmpty(RECIPlinks) Then
RECIP.Worksheets.Add(After:=RECIP.Worksheets(RECIP.Sheets.Count)).Name = "LINKS"

Answer:Solved: Copying Links from One Excel File to Another

Turns out, I did manage to skip the link sheet stage.
Here's the new code.

Code:
Sub UpdateReportNewTemplate()
Dim fNameAndPath, I, RECIPlinks, DONORlinks As Variant, RECIP, DONOR As Workbook, oldlink, newlink As String
Set RECIP = ActiveWorkbook

fNameAndPath = Application.GetOpenFilename(FileFilter:="Excel Files (*.XLSX), *.XLSX", Title:="Select File To Be Opened")
If fNameAndPath = False Then Exit Sub
Set DONOR = Workbooks.Open(fNameAndPath)

RECIPlinks = RECIP.LinkSources(xlExcelLinks)
DONORlinks = DONOR.LinkSources(xlExcelLinks)

' edit links by reading each of the oldlink references and replacing with newlink references
For I = 1 To UBound(DONORlinks)
oldlink = RECIPlinks(I)
newlink = DONORlinks(I)
RECIP.ChangeLink Name:=oldlink, _
NewName:=newlink, Type:=xlExcelLinks
Next I

End sub

I'll leave it here for any further advice for a day or so before marking it as solved. At the very least it might be useful to someone in their own project.

Some people have win95 as a directory, some have win, some have win2000, and others. I did not set it up this way. I think there is some kind of %systemroot% command but am not sure. What this will do is it will auto find the OS folder and copy the files into the system folder. Dose any one know the batch command?
Thanks

I'm on a new computer, Windows 7 64-bit, and I'm having some issues with Java. I've seen a couple of error messages from programs that refer to Java (one referred to JavaScript specifically), but when I've tried to research it, it seems like all's well with Java on my system.

I went to the Java site, and today it said there's an update, so I downloaded it. It said nothing about first uninstalling anything, so I assumed that's not necessary. While the installer was running I got an error message:

error copying file to c:\windows\SysWOW64\npDeployJava1.dll

I clicked OK and the installer just kept going, then told me it's all installed, which seems weird if there's an error and some file may be missing.

I really don't know anything about Java. I know that lots of programs require it be installed, but I have no clue what sort of programs need it and why. Really, this particular program is largely a mystery to me.

How do I figure out if it's functional? Should I have uninstalled it before updating? I've looked at that option, but in my Programs there are three things listed named Java, and I have no idea if any or all of them are relevant: Java(TM) 7 Update 1 (64-bit), Java(TM) 7 Update 5, JavaFX 2.1.1

Update 1 evidently came with the computer, because it was installed in March, before I had it.

There are also a couple of items named Java in my Firefox Plugins: Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.40.255 10.... Read more

Hi
I have two accounts on my laptop: Bryan as admin and James as my local account which I use for my daily workings.
All my work is save to a different partition on the hard drive.

I now notice that if I go to C:\users, I have my admin account but there are two other user accounts James and James.lenovo15.

Originally I found James and James-2 user accounts so I moved the James-2 folders and files to my work partition (just so I didn't lose the info before deleting it). When I signed in again, I could only sign in as a "guest" using the James-2 password.

I have now spent a coupe of days deleting the user account under the User Accounts setting. Then deleting the James account in the only place it appears (C:\Users); and creating a new Local User account in the user accounts (using Bryan admin). However, I find that in C drive I still have two James users - James and James.lenovo15.

I think that when I just deleted the James account in C:\Users it must have left some residual elements somewhere and it recreated itself and the new local account which I names simply James was forced to add to the name .Lenovo15 to prevent conflicts.

Although I doesn't affect the running of the computer, having both users takes up considerable space. James user 4.7 gbs while the new James.lenovo15 has 1.7 gb.

Has anyone any idea how to resolve the matter?

Hello...

I was thinking about databases today, and pondered a question.

How is it that for example iTunes/YouTube servers serve up the same file to thousands of users.

Im trying to visualize whats happening in the database when for example several hundred users want to download the same music file (that lastest new release etc) and/or watch the same popular YouTube video at the same time.

I realize that in a small workgroup network, that if an excel file is shared only "one" person can read/modify the file at one time.

Are there multiple copies of the same file stored to meet demand? Or rather when requested, does the file duplicate itself as necessary in a new temp tablespace?

I understand streaming media and MBR... but just trying to figure out how it really works when hundreds of users try to upload the same file.

Any DB Admins in the house? Thanks!

Answer:Solved: How do databases serve up the same file to many users in real time?

The server creates a different thread for each connection. Everyone connecting is just reading the file and do not need write access to it. So in essence it would be much different from file downloading or streaming on your own network.

Hoping this is a one off.Today my daughter?s account was Debited 3 times for her AOL broadband, they stated it was a system error and the overcharged amount would be back into her account in 3 days, unfortunately this overdrew her account, but AOL weren?t interested.

Answer:AOL users check your bank accounts.

BillyBee, if your daughters bank charges her for going overdrawn get in touch with the banking ombudsman. The address and phone number should be on her bank statements. Regards, Meshuga.

There are other threads on this but none have provided a resolution to my problem. Running the users check indicates the administrator account exists. However, I cannot select any users except my standard windows user on boot-up, nor can I switch users from the start center, as there are no other users to select at the top right of the start center - i.e., the pix and user name do not contain other user names. The power button on settings doesn't either. When checking the task manager, there is only my own windows user name listed, so no other user to switch to. I installed various reg, bat and vbs files available for downloading on this web site without success.

I hope that there is a setting that has changed - but looking at secpol and gpedit nothing jumps out at me.

Nothing seems to correct the problem. Anyone?

Answer:Cannot log-in to other accounts at boot-up or switch users

Hello Dugly, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Please open User Accounts in the Control Panel (icons view), click on the Manage another account link, then post back with a screenshot of what it shows. Be sure to blank out any email addresses that may be in it.

Today I tried to add an account to my Windows 10 computer (Version 1607 Build 14393.321). Not something I do very often so I Googled it. When I select Settings - Accounts, I do not see the option for "Family and other users" like the screen image below. This image is not from my machine - it's from a site that shows how to add an account.

What I see is shown in the screen shown below. If I click on the big + box for "Add someone else to this PC:, I do not get a screen that says "Add a child or an adult?" and then "Lets create an account".

When I click on "Other People" and then the PLUS box for "Add someone else to this PC" it takes me to the inset box in the 2nd screenshot below. From there, I can select Users, then from the Action option, New User, then fill in the boxes. I have no idea why what happens on my PC is totally different than the several web sites I found that take you through this process. Any ideas are appreciated.

Answer:Family & Other Users does not appear in Settings - Accounts

The instructions and the screenshot on the other site you mention describe how it's done in Windows 10 Home and Pro. You are using Windows 10 Enterprise by the looks of it (or Education, maybe?).

On Windows 10 Enterprise edition:
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Accounts > Other people > Add someone else to this PC.

I have built a new system and re-insatalled Windows XP to it. Everything finally works find excpt on user accounts other than mine (mine is the adminstrators) (my wife's so you know how much grief that is) Internet exploror hangs. Cannot do anything except close out the account. ONly hangs up the internet however, which I think is very strange. I have been looking for any help on the Microsoft site, with no luct.

Point me in a direction and I will gladly try it.

Answer:Cannot open InternetExploror on other users accounts

Test if this is a local rights issue by temporarily granting your wife's account administrator rights, then testing again. If it works fine on the first test, then remove the rights and see if it happens again.

Let us know how you get on.

Hey
I was hoping someone can answer me with this problem I am having.
I have 5 users accounts in one network domain. I have two different location, 2 different pc. The two PC has two different email address that receive different information. I want to have one user go to the first PC at the first location and receive that location's email, I want to have outlook be configured to receive just that location's emails. The next day he will be schedule to go to the second location and when he signs in to windows I want the outlook to be configured already and have it set up to receive the second location's emails.

Is there like a log on script I have to create? or is there like something I can do in Active Directory or any other solution to make this possible or if it is possible?

Answer:question about users accounts in ADUC

just set up user accounts for those two locations. account1 set up with the email address for site1, account2 set up with the email address for site2. then give the account info to the users involved. think that would work out for you?

I am preparing an old laptop for a new employee. When I log in as administrator I see 4 users in the control panel. I can log in as a fifth user that isn't listed whose username matches the computer name. When I go to C/Users/ I see folders for the fifth user that I can log in as and a sixth that also isn't listed in the control panel. Also, in C/Users/ I don't see every user that is listed in the control panel.

I need to remove all users except administrator and the new employee as well as clean up the computer of all old, unused files and programs. How can I trim down the users to just the two that are needed, including the ones that aren't listed?

Hello there. I hope someone here can help me on this annoying problem.

Accidentally, I typed in my Hotmail account details into my dad's user for XP, now everytime he looks at the User Menu, he's got a notice reminding him that MY 28 messages are stil unread.

Also, he has someone just added his btinternet.com email to this list, and now when he trys to access these emails through the web browser, they appear to be missing from his bt.yahoo.com account. He CAN however, find these emails in Outlook.

So, help deletling my Hotmail account association from my dad's XP account, and to somehow get his messages back online...

Pretty please?

Many thanks.

I have never seen this happen before and they appearing all over the place. Our staff use redirected folders but local settings are kept on the machines. I've never seen this happen before, but also after a while windows will prevent the user logging in. The
only work around we have found is to remove the folders and the registry entries. Anyone else seen or know how to fix this?

In accordance with regulatory instructions, PayPal is about to change their withdrawal functionality in India starting on August 1, 2010. At present you can request for either an electronic or cheque withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account if you are an India user.

From July 29, 2010 onwards, you will only be able to request for a cheque withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account.

In a mail to me they said, “While we are working hard to restore the electronic withdrawal service, in the meantime, we are bringing this matter to your attention so that you can plan your future withdrawal activities accordingly.”
To request for a cheque withdrawal:
1. Log into your PayPal account, click on ‘Withdraw’.
2. Click on the ‘Request a cheque from PayPal’ link.
3. Enter the withdrawal amount and select your mailing address, then click ‘Continue’.
4. Click ‘Submit’ to confirm your request. In order to help you with this change and until further notice, Paypal will refund the $5 USD cheque withdrawal fee to you for cheque withdrawals made on July 29, 2010 onwards.

When checking folder properties/security tab I noticed that there are 2 unknown user accounts in the control panel. These were probably created when I tried to take possession of a folder (Skype) that I was having trouble deleting. I changed permissions for the particular folder, at one point adding an account with administrator privileges. Want to delete these accounts, but am concerned that I might have log on issues. Would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.

Answer:Unknown accounts in Users control panel

edit: nup, thought about it a moment, wouldn't work/make any difference.

Can't see you'd have log on issues with your current account if it is an admin though. Do you have backups... is always a good idea, though probably irrelevant in this situation.

I'd just do it...

I deleted one of the user accounts, and they both disappears, so now I'm left with just the built in Admin account, and I can't add another account. When I click on Add Account, it just buffers and times out. I'm going to try the solution on another thread.

Hello,

We are currently in the process of updating the Windows machines at the university that I work up to Windows 7 from XP. Recently we have been noticing issues when students log into the machines where it might randomly login to a TEMP profile over the Domain Profile.

Any ideas on why this might be?

Answer:Temp Profiles being created on Domain Users Accounts Win 7

I would check to see if you are using redirected folders on the server for the users in question. I have seen problems because of the different folder structure for the "?sers" folder in xp versus win 7.

I do all this and then switch user. I go to the users email and try to click on the link and it wont click. I try to copy and paste into the users documents, but it will not copy and paste.

I go to the user's Documents and try to see if there is a link there....but nothing is there.

Right now the gues account is practially the same as mine just limited stuff you can do. Thanks

Answer:How to Not allow Guest users to see programs and files on other (admisistor) accounts

I have 8x users and I successfully prevent some of them to see the same stuff as the main user/admin can, and did it roughly as follows:

Chose the directory you don't want them to see, then rightclick and chose properties or found your way to security. The trick is to add the name of the user in security to that directory, and then block it ....Deny Access...You can now further hide that directory, and the user will normally not see it, but if he view it, he will get message=Access Denied.

The Guest:I would treat the Guest in similar way.

Answer:Admin Accounts saving on other users on Vista Ultimate

You are going to need to save it to a shared folder and then log out and into the other account, then you can move or copy the file from the shared folder to the current users Documents folder.

By the way, you are NOT "The Administrator" but a member of the Admin group.

Hi there

seem to have found a SHOWSTOPPER on build 10158 -- If I try and add an account (or a user) I get a quick flash on the screen and then it disappears and I'm still in the settings menu.

The PC has always had just a LOCAL account.

There's obviously something wrong if I can't add users .

I think that as it's a VM I'll ditch it and go back to build 10130 on a REAL machine and try the update again. Then I'll create a NEW VM hopefully with build 10159.

Obviously, a man who can make such a hash of things needs a problem-specific, step-by-step fix. Please, someone?

Hey,

My office has requested a simple IM service for interoffice communications, and i have installed openfire on a Centos 5.5 server and configured clients with pidgin, and it works great.

however i noticed several staff members adding accounts for MSN and AIM to their pidgin as well, which does not go over well with management.

while installing pidgin there were check boxes where i unselected all the IMs thinking it would prevent them from being added but i was wrong.

does anybody have any experience with this? perhaps something i can do to disable the adding of new accounts in pidgin, or another IM client that only supports xmpp/jabber

Its a great office resource and i would hate to have to scrap it because i cant prevent the staff from chatting with their friends at work.

thanks so much

Answer:Pidgin/openfire for office users, how to block adding of other IM accounts

the im client we use is called neos, for our jabber server

doesn't seem the creators of the app are around anymore... can't hit their domain.

http://neos.en.softonic.com/

However, Neos is no walled garden. It allows you to gather all your contact lists from different messaging networks (ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and Jabber) into a single window -but that depends exclusively on the plug-ins you install on the server, so everything remains under the Administrator's control. That means you can use it just as an internal communication tool and add support for other networks as it is needed.Click to expand...

Hi ALLI'm about to go OS for a month and have a house sitter coming to stay who will feed the fish and email me from my own computer with updates... My searches didn't turn anything up, but I have a pretty general question about file access rights... I'm trying to separate a potential problem with the hard drive vs. a security "feature" in Vista.

I'm having a hardware problem (maybe a virus though) with my laptop and am trying to access the hard drive to pull files off of it. I'm set up for it to appear as USB removable drive on another computer (both machines run Vista Premium) and can navigate most folders (eg, program files etc...). The ones I want to retrieve are all in the "Users\$username$" subfolders and when I try to open that folder, Vista chimes in with it's administrator check-in, so once I put in the password it apparently should work, BUT it never loads the folder contents into the right-hand pane. The progress bar on top slowly loads to very near the top, but never finishes. I've waited about 10 minutes before giving up on it.

So the question is whether I should even expect to be able to view these files without hacking in somehow or if this is part of my problem.... I'm doing a virus scan on that hard drive as a slave on the other computer now, so the jury's still out on that front.

Thanks!
Dan

Answer:copying files from a laptop hard drive; I can't access the users folder

I can not give an answer, as I have a very similar issue. My Dell laptop with Vista Business, has crashed, "missing boot loader" with restore from previouys save point failing as well. I am able to use the command prompt (dos) to copy documents and photos via mem stick to another PC. BUT can not locate OUTLOOK 2007 email store and contacts. I believe they are located deep in \users\"name" but can not find the .PST file.

Using dos string - c:\xcopy c:\users\gibbonz\*.pst f:\users /s /e

I am attemting to rebuild the bootloader with "bootrec.exe" but not havin g much luck. Searched and found cd bootable vista OS so will try that.

Hope you have more luck and get some advice.

Answer:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

I have a external my book fat32 formated and a new mybook ntfs formated external as well.  Now when I copy my files from the fat32 to the ntfs external all files copy fine but some give that destination location file characters are too long, meaning that the file names are too long.  Now I could change the file names but that would conflict with programs that need that file name.  I am using vista ultimate and would like to copy all the files over from the fat32 to ntfs so I can reformat the fat32 to ntfs.  The files got on the ntfs from a simple drag and drop from my IDE NTFS internal hard drive. I hope you guys to tell me what to do. Thank you :)

WMC recording/playback and media/file sharing seems to work fine until I go to copy a file between drives, where one of those drives is currently using some of its i/o bandwidth to do media. The copy hogs the i/o bandwidth, doing nasty things to the real-time needs.

How do I permanently tell Win7 x64 to do all [explorer] copies at a lower CPU and i/o (explorer.exe & system) priority and/or elevate WMC CPU & i/o (ehshell.exe?) and file/media sharing priorities a bit?

The PC is up to date on patches/drivers and should be able to prioritize obvious applications?

Answer:Problem with file copying adversely affecting media/file sharing & WMC

Right click on the process in Task Manager. There you can set the priority.

Is there a way to create user files or folders that are not invisible to other users. Invisible to mean the other user see absolutely nothing to do with another user. Users in this case to mean Windows 10 "Standard User" Please note that if solution cannot be accomplished with Home edition, please note that in your reply --Thanks

Here is an example. There are 2 user accounts on my computer, not including mine. The computer has a 2nd drive that I use for all my personal data. When I created a Standard User, that user apparently can see all my folders and files. They cannot open them but they can see the titles. I want to create an environment where each user only can see and manipulate those files and folders they create/own. Other than that the data drive would empty.

If this is something you know about or dealt with I would very much like to hear your thoughts and a concrete and simple way to accomplish this.

Again, thanks
Jerry

I'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.

I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html <<<< won't open web page.

I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.

I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".

Answer:Problem copying file to desktop - System has file Open?

This is how I solved the issue with file permissions:

Choose the folder you want as your top down folder I.E "my documents" Right click - Properties.

Select the security tab

from the group or user names list, choose a user. click edit.

here you should be able to change the permissions. Tick all the boxes.

Click OK - APPLY.

I didn't use the take owner ship download, there was no need.

Okay I want to go over pros and cons of some of the things that my boss wants done.

First off let me explain what we have. Users are on a domain system. Both laptop and desktop users. No users have admin rights.

Now let me explain what we want to do. We want a backup of their My Documents (and possibly other directories in the future) but we want it to be as invisible to them as possible.

I looked into the Folder redirection GPO and has a good pro - Simple to impelment (I did a test on my own PC did it in about 5 minutes) cons - in order to allow laptops to work they would have to have offline folders enabled and synchrnized and worst of all synchrnization won't accept PST's, MDB's and other key files that we would need synchronized as well gives errors in the synching process.

I then thought about a file sync program letting them seemlessly work on their PCs and just sync the files to the file server - Pros Can install a server side client that just polls for connected PC's and copies the files to the repsective places. Cons costs money, usually does not sync in use files making some of the files be missed.

Lastly I considered a batch file to run at login - Pros easier to setup to copy things out. Cons only runs at login so people could leave their PC up for 15 days and have 15 day old software. As well I do not know how to copy only modified files so some people with large files would copy over a ton of data (unless I can find a solution for this).

TRYING TO MOVE data from a DVD to my hard drive. When I try and copy the files, or any file for that matter that is a large file( over 1 GIG), I get this error when it begins copying:

DATA ERROR: CYCLIC REDUNDACY CHECK

It begins copying the file, but stops about a third into the copy process. I am using WINDOWS EXPLORER to move the files.I tried renaming file, but that did not work either, I thought maybe it had something to do with how the file was named. Any thoughts, ideas, explanations...appreciated!

This picture shows how my name has been changed in User Accounts and in regedit, as displayed by running winver, but yet all my files are still found at C:\Users\Owner.
When I go to C:\Users, the Owner folder is locked and cannot be renamed even though my account type is administrator, as seen here.
How do I really change the name from Owner to a name of my choosing?

pop up keeps re-appearing.  Windows 10 pro.  It says: "user accounts...use the list below to grant or deny users permission"
How do I deactivate it?  It's not the one that notifies me if a program wants to make a change to the computer.

I have tried changing passwords, etc.

Answer:How to set diffrent times/dates for diffrent users accounts in XP

You could probably accomplish this with some form of batch file or logon script. Maybe this page will help.

This bug has been present in 8 and it is still there in 8.1.

If the computer has non-interactive user accounts (i.e. accounts listed under "Deny logon locally" in Local Security Policy), these accounts are visible in the "Sign Out/Lock" menu of every regular interactive user on that machine ("regular" in this case means a member of "Users" group, not "Administrators" group).

Interactive accounts with administrative privileges do not suffer from this problem: their "Sign Out/Lock" menu only lists interactive users, as it should be.

So, is there any workaround for this issue? Or is there an alternative way to create non-interactive accounts (for network access) so that they will not appear in "Sign Out/Lock" menu of regular users?

Answer:Restricted users can "see" non-interactive accounts

Answer:Copying file into another

I'm probably misunderstanding what you want to do, but basically copy the exe into that directory and overwrite the current one already there.

Is that what you want to do?

Basically, my DVD (half) drive died, bringing windows XP with it. I have a backup image i can restore, and i can boot off cd into the restore prog - but then it wont read the drive to load the image.. So i have the image on a portable USB drive, which can be seen under dos in "windows XP Recovery".. But it wont copy and im guessing its the file size..

Question: File Copying

Ok, im having a problem. I need to get a copy of SHLWAPI.DLL to a computer, the only problem is, that i can only copy it from pure DOS. Not no windows command prompt, because this file is constantly used by windows. This laptop does not feature a floppy drive so i would need to boot of cd, secondly this is a NTFS file system. I have a suggestion and i know this is out there somewhere, please direct me to where i can find it:

Boot of CD into DOS with a program such as NORTON COMMANDER, or something along those lines so i can view files in DOS. I already copied the required file to my PC, it is located in the TEMP directory. I just need to get it into SYSTEM32. Any suggestions of a program that can boot of a CD into DOS and execute such a directory viewer like NORTON COMMANDER, to copy the file to its proper destination?

Thanks in advance,
Michal

Question: File Copying

I've just succeeded in getting a new hard drive for my wife's computer up and runnung. It's formatted and partitioned. Now --- on to the next challenge. The reason for the new drive is that the old one, which is the C: drive  is small (3 gig) and almost full. I thought that I'd replace it with a larger drive. I don't want to go through the hassel of re-installing Windows, and then having to re-install all the programs, because of the Registry. I thought I could coppy the entire contents of the old C: drive to the new drive, and then set the new drive as the Master, and I'd be off and running. I should have known .....Copying all the contents of the old drive (except for the Windows directory) was easy. Copying the Windows directory is a challenge I haven't overcome yet.I've booted from a Start-up disk, and then tried to use xcopy to copy the Windows directory from the C: drive to the new drive I've st up as a slave (D:), but no luck. I get a message saying the F: Drive isn't ready (F: Drive, what F: Drive?)Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do what I want; or any other suggestions as to a different way to go about it.Incidentally, I'm using WIN98SE as the OS on the existing C: drive.Tom

Answer:File Copying

Sometimes a new hard drive comes with the software to do this. Or did you just get a bare drive? What brand? Did you check the drive maker's site?If you hooked the hard drive up as a slave, then it is an extended partition, not a primary partition which is what is needed for Win98 to boot.

Hi,
I've read different instructions on how to copy to a CD-R, however, I don't understand them. It tells me things that I don't have such as an A and E drive. All I see are C and D drives. Then it mentions something about an Easy CD Creator in which I don't have. I am not computer literate; could someone explain to me very simply (and please don't leave out any steps because that will throw me off) how to copy a file to a CD-R :

Confused

Answer:Copying one file to a CD

First off you need a CD-RW Drive and CD Writing Software, do you have these?

What operating system are you running?
