Downloads interrupted by sleep mode

Question: Downloads interrupted by sleep mode

I recently purchase a program and, before I can run it, I'm having to download a required patch from the manufacturer. Unfortunately, it's a gigantic file (over 2GB) and will require several hours even on a broadband connection.

Trouble is, if I let something download and I walk away and do other things, after a few minutes Windows Vista will automatically put the computer in a stand by or sleep mode, whichever one it is. If I return to the computer and move the mouse, the computer will wake up, but the download is interrupted. So, for instance, I can't let the download begin processing in the morning before leaving work because, halfway down the road, the download will be interrupted by sleep mode and when I eventually return home, I'll have to start over again from square one.

Is there ANY way to avoid this? Or am I basically required to be in front of the computer during the whole download duration?

Preferred Solution: Downloads interrupted by sleep mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Any reason you can't go into the Power Options control panel and tell Windows to never go to sleep?

So, as the title suggests, I was wondering if there was a way to make sleep mode not terminate(For lack of a better word) my network, as I'd love to download things overnight but... I have my sleep mode set to Never in the control panel though, but I use it occasionally through my keyboard(The moon key is a shortcut for Sleep).

Any way to allow sleep mode to not disable downloads?
Or... Is there a way to have a low power computer(I'd like the monitor to be off), but be able to finish downloading?

Answer:Any way to allow downloads while in sleep mode?

Hi Metamence,

Check out the following tutorial and see if it helps - it includes ways to enable or disable devices to awaken a computer from sleep mode: Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems.

Here's a tutorial on how to awaken a PC to perform a task scheduled in task scheduler: Task Scheduler - Wake Up Computer.

Here's a tutorial on how to change the return to sleep mode time for unattended tasks that awaken a PC from sleep mode: Sleep Return Timeout for Unattended Wake Up.

I'm not certain how to prevent the display from activating when the computer awakens from sleep mode along with everything else. I'm not entirely sure that's possible - though perhaps I simply don't know how to do it.

The solution for "turning off" the display only during a download (assuming it is a laptop and you can't just turn off the monitor by pushing the power button) is to create an icon to activate the screensaver upon pushing it and set the screensaver to blank Create Icons to Start the Screensaver on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek - though not officially turned off it will use minimal power and will also be totally dark as if it were off. Alternatively, you could try the solution in the following article which actually creates an icon to shutoff the display using 3rd party software: Create a Shortcut or Hotkey to Turn Off the Monitor - How-To Geek. I do not know how you activate the monitor if you want to see it if it is shutdown using this method, but presumably the sofwar... Read more

Is it my imagination or do interrupted downloads in XP not restart from the point of interruption like Win98SE did? I have had some connection problems with my dial up service this morning and have tried several times to download a file, but it always starts over. This was a very useful feature in Win98SE, is there something I need to turn on in XP to get it to do this?

Answer:interrupted downloads

It not a standard feature for Windows 98 either. Go to Download.com and look for third party download utilities. V.92 the new modem protocol reportly also supports it and Call Waiting.

So I'm using the firefox browser in my newly-reformatted computer.
And I'm have some download problems. Everytime I would download a file it won't show up in the downloads but there will be a file created in my harddrive folder as specified under the firefox options on the "downloaded" files. The problem however is that the file is only 30 kb and is a .part file and not completed. I always have to re-download the file for 2 or 3 times until the file is finally completed downloaded.

I'm thinking it must be something to do with my kapersky antivirus. If not, then thats why I'm posting here to see some measures I can take to fix this, hence to prevent it from happening again.

Hey everyone.

I'm currently at an Air Force school, and I'm stuck on dial-up while I'm here. I'm trying to download a 31MB file, but after an hour or so, my connection drops.

The Firefox download manager reports the download "done", even though it's only 800K or so. When I go to download it again, I can only overwrite it and start over.

Is there any way to resume this download ala FTP, other than using an FTP client? I've already installed the tweaked download extension, but it doesn't seem to help.

Answer:Firefox - Resuming Interrupted Downloads

Firefox doesn't support download resumption. I hear it's planned for inclusion sometime, but you'll have to use Getright for now.

Hi all

Hopefully I have chosen the right forum to post this in.

I have recently purchased a new laptop computer running Windows 8.1

The problem I am experiencing is that when trying to download a file that takes a while, eg. >15 minutes (Happens to be when my display goes to sleep) the download is interrupted and I have to manually restart it.

The first time this happened, my computer was actually sleeping and I thought great my download had finished although only 20% was actually downloaded and I had to manually resume.

Now for the second large download I thought I would set the computer to never sleep, I came back to it after 40 minutes, the display was asleep but not the computer however the download was interrupted.

I will do some more tests by setting the sleep time to 1 minute and downloading a file that takes longer than this but I do think that somehow the power management internals are interrupting the download.

I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and what they have done to solve this?

My Personal belief is that I think it should be classed as buggy because other applications can prevent sleeping (eg. Media players) while downloading via IE does not prevent sleeping while a download is in progress. Is there a way to let Microsoft know of possible bugs?

I'm not sure if I clicked on something I shouldn't have or what but I feel pretty sure there's some kind of malware or virus on my system. All my downloads would stop at 99% and not finish, and attempts to download malwarebytes resulted in "setup files corrupted". I already had malwarebytes installed but it will not update, neither will my other programs, as soon as they get to 99% the whole bar resets. Images on websites are loading broken and halfway, and video won't load past 6 seconds or so.

I've run:
Malwarebytes (Quick and Full scan) and Chameleon (Quick and full also)
Avast! Antivirus (Quick, Full, and Boot-time scan)
HitmanPro
Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes and Avast in Safe Mode and the only things found were 2 trojans by Malwarebytes and after they were removed the problem never went away. This never happened until a few days ago and the internet connection is fine. Conduit was found by HitmanPro but I don't think it was removed. I did download MotionJoy sometimes around this realization which afterwards I heard was adware but since then i've uninstalled but of course that would mean nothing. I'm fresh out of ideas so I would appreciate any and all help.

Answer:Possible infection but nothing found. All downloads interrupted or corrupted.

Are you using Internet Explorer? If so, do you have Smart Screen enabled?

HiI am trying to get support to fix my laptop, a Lenovo T430S. When I put my laptop to sleep, it crashes and doesn't recover from the sleep mode. I have updated most of the drivers involved with network, power management, and USB. I have copy and pasted the BSOD crash report - which shows TCPIP.SYS a isnd NTOSKRNL.EXE involved in a Drive_Power_State_Failure. I feel that some of the drivers are corrupted. Is there a way to restore the drivers to original settings without deleting files such as documents and programs? I do not have a restore point prior to this malfunction. Hi,
I've had this problem intermittently on my laptop for the past 2 years however it has been occuring more often recently.

Basically sometimes when I click the sleep button on Windows 7, the screen fades to black as usual. However the fan keeps running (sounds like when it's on full load) and the power button light stays on endlessly. I always have to force shut it down and restart it.

What can be the issue?
Thanks.

Answer:Laptop freezes between entering sleep mode to being in sleep mode

Hi joseph10444.

Such a situation may occur when some driver (mostly the PnP device drivers depending on the ACPI configuration) fail to response within a stipulated time period during the power state change.

Let us see some data. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
Upload the list of all the third party drivers Using NirSoft DriverView :
Download and execute Driverview
View > Hide Microsoft Drivers
Edit > Select all
File > Save Selected Items
In the Save dialog, Set the path to desktop, Put "Driverview" in the name field, and save.
Zip the .txt file and upload it.
Those files will give us a closer look to the issue.

My SL500 (using Vista) has an intermittent problem, it will enter sleep mode, when you  press a key it exits sleep mode, but within a minute (sometimes longer) it will automatically re enter sleep mode, this will then continue indefinitely. If I restart the laptop the same issue will persist, although sometimes if I remove the battery and power lead once the laptop is shut down and then re connect the power and start it the sleep mode will sometimes function correctly (can't definitely say it always does). The problem is not constant, it has happened repeatedly during the last two days, but before these incidents there were no problems for months.I read that some laptops had issues with the processor overheating and this can cause the laptop to power down, although the lap top had only been on for 30 minutes before the problem started.I wondered if anybody else has had this issue or knows of a fix or knows of any software settings that require adjustment?ThanksJon

I'm at the end of my wits here trying to figure out what is going on with my pc..

I have an overclocked pc, to 4.6 which has been rock stable.. sleep mode has worked fine.. i choose sleep and it stays asleep..

I decided to wipe my C drive on my samsung Evo ssd (no samsung software running).. and start clean.. i also tested this on my older test image, same issue..

If i choose sleep, it instantly comes back out of sleep (same with doing a shutdown too, though if i shutdown from bios no issue)..

I've tried everything.. i've tried viewing the wake events, nothing really there as a clue..
I've tried setting wake timers to disabled.. tried setting the nic card power management to off.. tried disabling the nic too.. saw that the mouse and keyboard are set to wake, set those to disabled for waking, no change.. tried pulling every usb from the machine.. still the same.

I've also tried updating via device manager various drivers, using the update button, some did update, but made no difference

Some of the commands i've used include:
powercfg -devicequery wake_armed
powercfg /requests

Also ran the sleepstudy option, but when it says woke up, cause is "unknown"
Again, this all worked fine about 10 days ago on the old OS, its the new one giving it fits (and technically my older test win 10 image too for some reason).

I went into the bios and disabled the overclock for the most part, basically took my ratio from 46 to 43 (i7-6700k).. same ... Read more

Hi, I'm having problems on a system with a gigabyte MA78GM-US2H and a amd 9850 quad. The computer works fine but after I install symantec I can no longer get the computer to go to sleep, It just reboots and starts up again. When I remove it, the computer can go to sleep again. I have updated all of the drivers and the mobo bios but the problem is still here. Any ideas on what to do next? or maybe is there a free virus program out there I could use instead? I would rather not have to buy something different if I can avoid it. Thanks

Answer:Problems with Symantec and sleep mode, computer reboots instead of going to sleep

What program do you mean by "Symantec?" Symantec makes a ton of different antivirus softwares, among other things. Most of them are a pain in the ass, and your computer is better off without them. I think a lot of the guys on this forum recommend NOD32. I typically recommend Trend Micro, but to be honest I don't use any AV on my own machine. Be smart with your surfing, don't open attachments, and run a firewall. Makes it pretty damn hard to get a virus!

Hi KnightCa,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I'm really sorry to hear that your Lenovo W520 goes into sleep mode even after it has been disabled in Power management.

Go to Control panel - - >Power Options - - >Change plan settings (Choose the Power plan that you have selected) - - >Change advanced power settings - - >Adjust the settings under sleep and display as shown below.

Also, try doing a windows update and reinstallation of Power manager in your system.

If the above said didn?t help, try doing a registry editing.

1. Open the Start Menu. 2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter. 3. If prompted, click on Continue in the prompt. 4. In regedit, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\238C9FA8-0AAD-41ED-83F4-97BE242C8F20\7bc4a2f9-d8fc-4469-b07b-33eb785aaca0\DefaultPowerSchemeValues.

5. Expand DefaultPowerSchemeValues and Click on the key that is for the Power Plan that you want to change the wait time (Refer the table below)

When I leave my computer after a session, it automatically goes into sleep mode after a period of time and remains that way till I wake it up.

However when I manually put it to sleep ( via shutdown options) , it goes to sleep immediately but for only a while ( a few minutes) then it shows the desktop screen again. If I then leave it alone after it self awake , it goes back to sleep as described above.

Any idea why ?

Thanks

Answer:Auto sleep mode works but manual sleep does not

Hi,

Some softwares can stop the sleep request to work properly.

run cmd.exe as a admin (Click on start, type CMD, right click on CMD.exe and select run as admin)
then type the command
powercfg.exe /energy
This will generate a report that will show if any software is blocking the sleep request. Your next step would be to configure the software in control panel power options

I shut down the computer last night and when I restarted and tried to access the internet I got constant "connection interrupted" messages. I remember that I installed Microsoft.net framework 1.1 yesterday, despite the program's warnings about compatability. So I ran a .net removal utility to no avail, though I'm sure 3.5 is still here.

I called my ISP for support and we tried several things: restoring to an earlier time did no good, but we confirmed that there were no problems with my IP, ping-ing any website or releasing/renewing with ipconfig. I've tried disabling my firewalls and antivirus software but it makes no difference. I've also scanned my PC with multiple programs (Trend Micro, Malwarebytes, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool) and it didn't find anything. So I'm a little lost here...

I like to put my computer on sleep so I can just come back to where I left it, but the past few days when I put it on sleep the screen would just go black like it was asleep, but the computer was still on and running like I didn't put it in sleep. Then when I move the mouse to come out of sleep it says "locking computer" and goes to my password screen (which is what it should do before going to sleep). I don't think its in the power settings because I've checked there and played around with the settings (I'm not technically challenged so I don't think it's something that simple lol).

Also, my touchpad scroll feature does not work (and has not worked for quite some time). It comes back when I turn the computer off and on again, but I only do that a few times a week. I've tried reinstalling the touchpad firmware so that isn't the problem.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215.

Answer:PC shutting down incorrectly/not going to sleep when put in sleep mode

I guess a lot of people are facing the same problem. My laptop also not shutting down, sleep or hibernating properly.
It just takes too long to hibernate, shutdown or even sleep. In my case, after sleep I cannot resume, it just a black screen and pressing anything doesn't do anything and I have to shutdown my laptop and restart again to use. So I set my laptop to never go to sleep or anything just so this doesn't happen.

Attempt to enter sleep or hibernation, then when it wakes up right after, go to Command Prompt and run "powercfg -lastwake". It'll tell you what woke up the system.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I think this is NIC related.

Downloads in Flashget stop when windows 7 puts my monitor to sleep. I can line up downloads in Flashget and they work fine while I'm using the PC. However as soon as the monitor is put to sleep by Windows, the downloads stop. Moving the mouse brings the monitor to life and the downloads resume - however, the usually speed drops considerably (from 800kps to around 100kps) and does not improve unless I restart.

Originally I thought this was related to scheduled downloads. I set up a scheduled, off-peak download overnight and when I got up I'd find that the downloads had failed. However, I noticed the issue was happening whenever I downloaded and left the computer for a period of time.

Power settings are all on high. Harddrive/computer sleep is off. Monitor sleep is the only thing on (15 minutes). Ethernet controller has been set to not allow the computer to turn off (unchecked).

I'm using KIS2010 which may be blocking network access somehow. But disabling KIS and setting Flashget as trusted has no effect.

Is it possible that the ethernet is being powered down somehow when the monitor sleeps? Any additional settings under the Ethernet controller/power settings I can try?

Ethernet is onboard Marvell Yukon. Latest driver from Marvell installed.

Answer:Downloads stopping on monitor sleep

Interesting.

Does the act of switching the monitor off (power button) have a similar effect?

Is the problem entirely limited to Flashget downloads? In other words, does other network activity outside of Flashget continue unabated while your monitor is asleep? (I'm not clear on this point - was the scheduled task you tested a Flashget operation or something else?)

Does Flashget have any logging facilities which you could enable?

Does the same symptom happen in if you test in [safe mode + net]?

It's sufficiently weird to have the monitor's power state make any difference at all (unless the NIC was a USB job plugged into the side of the monitor ), but to have it affect only a single process would be very curious indeed.

Hello for the past 2 weeks I am facing a weird battery charging issue. Apparently the battery charges only while the laptop is on Sleep mode or Shut Down mode. It doesn't charge when powered on. The HP online support also does not have any answers. I have updated the BIOS and restarted the laptop countless times. The battery is not removable. Anybody else faced this issue and any solutions?  On a side note, Microsoft Excel crashes repeatedly since beginning. And the support has no answer to this too. Thanks for your help! Regards,Garry

I've been using this Windows 7 Home system for some years. At first it used the CRT monitor I had for much longer than this system, then a used LCD monitor, now for the last six or eight months a larger used, but seemingly in excellent condition, Dell E228WFP.

My habit has been, for much longer than I've had the Win7 system, to manually put the system in sleep mode during the day when I expect to be away for any extended time. I turn it off if I will definitely be away for hours and turn it off over night.

The problem did not exist until this Dell monitor. I don't recall how soon after getting the monitor it started, probably not very long.

The system always come up working properly when first turned on but sometimes, when I awaken the system, the video is at a much lower resolution. Looking at the Windows Screen resolution, it says generic PNP monitor rather than the Dell. This is an annoyance but easy enough to fix, just click on Detect, and it switches back to the Dell at the higher resolution, the recommended 1680 X 1050, which is enough to suit me.

Starting perhaps six or eight weeks ago it sometimes instead woke up with a message
1: auto detect (analog input)
Cannot display this video mode
optimum resolution 1680 x 1050 60Hz

Sometime the first line instead says
2: Analog Input

The only way to get any video is to restart the system, which always came up correct from boot or reboot, just not from reawaken. If nothing was open when I put it to sleep, I can use the k... Read more

Hi there folks, I've recently been experiencing my R61 wake itself up from sleep. Weirder, it wakes itself up in presentation mode, so my resolution is much lower than my normal setup. I'm not sure what's going on here, but it is a bit of a hassle. Once awake, I am at the Windows XP login page and once I fingerswipe into my account, the display mode typically goes back to its normal settings. This is more of an inconvenience than anything. Does anyone have any insights? I've checked the display manager and I think everything is in order.  Thank you in advance!

I would like to put my wireless mouse in inactive mode during sleep mode. As it is an mouse movement, usually accidental, wakes up the computer. I looked for a way but couldn't find this facility.

Jack

Answer:Sleep mouse during sleep mode?

Hello Jack,

You might check using STEP SIX in the tutorial below as a guide to see if you have a "Power Management" tab to uncheck the "Allow to wake computer" option in it for you mouse in Device Manager.

Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

If not, then you can use the STEP FIVE section to manually disable the mouse from waking up your computer.

Just be sure that you at least have the keyboard allowed to wake up the computer, or you will have to press the case power button to wake up your computer instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I am having an issue with my computer since I updated my iTunes and QuickTime and now anytime I try to open or run a program, it pulls up "view downloads" page and asks if I want to run or save the file. Neither option works as it simply re-opens another "view downloads" page and won't allow anything to run. I am operating in Safe Mode but same issue arises. See attached picture as anything I try to open goes to this page and keeps adding the same item over and over if you try to click run or save.
Can you steer me in the right direction?

So I got a nice, big 26" monitor to serve double as a TV while I'm doing schoolwork at my desk.

The problem is, when I blow images up all the way, the tracks seem to separate. Video will eventually lag behind, or even freeze up and then fast forward to catch up, etc. It's distracting.

When I blow up video like this, I expect to see some some bars (depending on wide screen or not, native resolution, etc), plus a loss in overall quality and clarity but this seems odd to me.

Hardware: 260gtx (216), q6600, 4gb DDR2, 7200rpm HD with 16 or 32mb cache, and a 26" Planar with native resolution of 1920x1200 and a 60hz refresh rate.

Software: It's happened in every media player I've used, from WinAmp and WMP to Nero.

Examples:
Downloaded episodes of Dexter are 608x336, at 128kbs and (supposedly) 23 frames/second.
Downloaded episodes of Heroes are 608x352, at 128kbs and (supposedly) 23 frames/second.
Widescreen movies like 1408 come at 652x266, at 112kbs and (supposedly) 23 frames/second.
When I fire it up, everything runs fine for awhile until, eventually, the above problems start to creep in. Distracting any time I want to swap to full screen and watch from across the room.

I'm not sure how this happened, or just what the proper vocabulary really is, but here's my problem.

I very carefully direct and downloaded files to a subfolder (DownloadsTempMD) under My Documents on a Data drive.

I'd really very much prefer to be able to sort downloaded files by name, date, the usual Details format.

For some reason Windows 7 Professional x64 has elected to conclude that anything I download must be for my entertainment, ergo it must be sorted by Title, Contributing Artists, Album. This may be a great boon to some, but it is a PITA to me. If I've downloaded an installation file, I want the most recent file at the top of the display where I can find it.

Is there a way to turn off this 'feature' that reminds my way too much of 'Clippy.'

thanks

I have tried to download combofix, rkill, etc.. but it says there is a virus in the program and cancels the installation.

The virus shows a windows shield then Internet Security and underneath Security it says designed to protect. After the scan another window pops up saying I have 84 useless and UNWANTED files on. The bottom right corner has an activate now box.

a lot of my friends have this problem. It doesn't matter what type of card they have. My problem is more difficult. When the screen turns off it happens quite often that it doesn't turn back but otherwise the pc (windows) is in working ("blindly" i deleted my icons from the desktop) If i press the power button than for instance the screen comes back and than the computer turn off. Ok so my computer is really jacked up. Like the title says I cannot boot into safe mode, access Google or Youtube, and when I try to download something it is saved as Freecorder and when I try to open the file it asks for a program to use to open it with even when I should not need to open the file with another program. I read the prep guide and the only thing I could do was run the GMER scan because it was a zip file. My friend who normally helps with my computer problems tried starting my computer in safe mode it would only stay in safe mode for a few seconds before it restarted itself. Question: sleep mode

I am running Windows XP. Ever since I got this computer about 6 months ago I have had this problem. I leave it on 24/7 and it goes into sleep mode after two hours. I don't have a problem "waking" it after a few hours in sleep mode but many times when I get up at 6am when it has been in sleep mode say for 8 to 10 hours it is totally locked up I can not even turn it off or on from the tower. I actually have to pull the power plug and do it that way. I continually set the power settings to no avail. I have the screen saver set to kick in after 30 minutes and the monitor, hard disks and system standby to shut down after 2 hours. I don't know why it acts this way.

On my Vista laptop I was going to reboot it when I accidentally clicked on Sleep. It shut down & rather than googling to find out how to wake it up, I pulled the power cord out & removed the battery for a few seconds & plugged it back in & put the battery in & booted it up. I was unable to get to my home page in FF but could get in here to TS. Simple question, what happens when a laptop is put to sleep?

Answer:What does Sleep mode do?

Sleep mode saves the session to RAM (which doesn't need much power to run) and turns off pretty much everything else. USB power and RAM is still powered. The power light should be blinking.

Either press a mouse/key or press the power button, and it'll turn on super-quick to where you left off.

My daughters PC has gone into a perpetual sleep mode, even with hard power button off/on, completely unplugging the PC and waiting etc. It simply turns on into sleep mode and nothing will wake it. I'm not there so I'm having to get youngsters to mess with the hardware. This is a Win 7 PC with wireless mouse and wired USB KB. I've already tried to remove and replace the wireless mouse receiver into a different USB port to no avail.

How the heck does it stay in sleep mode without power!?! If I was there I'd pull the button battery as well to reset BIOS.

Supposedly this is WIN 7's fault with some setting. Once I get back control, I can try this hopefully

This is probably due to the Wake Timers. Wake Timers are a component that programmers can use to wake an idle system and peform a routine function.
Prior to Windows 7, the user had no control over this.
Windows 7 gives the user the option to disable or enable the sleep timers.
If you wish to change this setting.
Open Control Panel.
Select the All Control Panel Items option.
Select Power Options.
Click Change plan settings in the selected plan.
Click Change Advanced Power Settings.
Click the + sign next to Sleep.
Click the + sign next to Allow Wake Timers.
Select the Disable option.
Click Apply / OK.Click to expand...

Hi, It's worth checking if the display is just being turned off after a certain period of inactivity - you can check this as follows. Right click on an empty area of the Desktop and select Personalize.  Click the Screen saver link in the bottom right.  In the following window you can adjust the time before the screensaver kicks in the  'Wait' dropdown menu to a more reasonable time and remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen if you don't wish to have to enter the password again after the time you set in the 'Wait' box'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save the setting change. Regards, DP-K

Upon finishing my new PC, I decided to let Windows 7 update itself while I take a nap. After a half an hour I returned and rebooted the machine. Much to my horror, the integrated Ethernet had entirely ceased to function! Indeed, device manager no longer showed any LAN devices. Even more puzzling was the error message I received while trying to reinstall my motherboard's integrated LAN drivers:

The Realtek Network Controller was not found.
If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable.Click to expand...

"Wait ... what?!", I immediately exclaimed aloud. A few Google searches later, the problem was made quite clear. Apparently, integrated devices on several motherboards tend not to wake up after Windows 7 goes into sleep mode. The precise cause eludes me, yet one easy solution is as follows:
Turn off the PC
Switch off the power switch at the back of the PC if it a desktop. Laptop owners simply unplug the power adapter.
Wait a few minutes while the capacitors lose their charge and the RAM clears.
Turn on the PC and verify that the LAN or whichever device was giving the deep sleep error now works. If not, then you could turn off the PC and remove the RAM for a minute. (Don't forget to touch the PSU before handling the RAM, though!)

Now that you've fixed the immediate issue, let's prevent it from happening again.
Open up Device Manager
Right click the device which formerly gave the error.
Click on Properties

Answer:Sleep mode in Win 7

Interesting. I have a GA-P55A-UD4P.

Sleep isn't too important for me (especially since it's a desktop). I believe I disabled it entirely, but this is still very useful. Thanks for the post!

Question: Sleep mode help

Have a newer Dell laptop and just put latest windows 10 on it. I have the screen set to sleep after 10 minutes, which it does. Problem is I cannot get it
to wake by moving mouse or hit enter key. That always worked before. I have to hold power button to shut down and restart.
Any ideas what it might be stopping it from waking??

Question: Sleep Mode

WIndows 7 64bit home edition used to go into sleep mode until I used computer again. The monitor would go dark, etc. to save power. Now it wakes up after being asleep at random intervals...sometimes a few minutes and sometimes longer. I've looked at what should wake up the computer which is now set to only mouse and keyboard. I use EASUS backup which is supposed to run at midnight but the sleep mode is erratic both before and after that time. I've even tried removing the backup software and it still happens. Any ideas?

Question: sleep mode in xp

I have a problem with my XP sp2 sleep mode.  When I press the sleep button, the computer goes to sleep. I will come back in a half hour or so and the desk top is running again.  This just stared in the last week.I have tried adjusting times in the display to no avail.??

Answer:sleep mode in xp

It might be that it's waking up because of an option in BIOS. Look for something like "wake on LAN" or "WOL" and switch that to off.

Question: Sleep Mode

As of yesterday, the sleep mode will not work, and I cannot even shut down properly. Neither the Sleep button nor the Suspend under the start box works and that suspend box just stays on the screen. They both lock up. Can bring up other items, but the Suspend box stays on the screen. Can only shut down improperly from the tower.

PC doesn't stay in sleep mode. Have regulated power options to comply i.e 'put the computer to sleep in 15 minutes, hybrid sleep off, never hibernate and disable wake timers'. Please advise.

Question: IF IN SLEEP MODE?

How do I visually tell if my computer is sleeping o justr the display is turned off?I think the answer might be that the power light blinks when the computer is sleeping.Holly

Answer:IF IN SLEEP MODE?

@Holly2? You can control the sleep and display modes separately in Control Panel > icon > Power Options -- in many cases people do set the display to go off before the computer actually drops into sleep mode. And, yes -- sleeping computer will "blink" its power light. Depending on how you have it set up, you briefly click the power button to wake-up the computer or wiggle the mouse (external). When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. Click my Answer Accept as Solution to help others find Answers.

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 10 on it. When it goes into sleep mode, if I swipe the touch pad within a few seconds it will come out of sleep mode. However if I'm not at the computer so that it is in sleep mode for a while, then when I swipe the touch to pad wake it up sometimes it will wake up but sometimes it won't. If it won't wake up then I have to use the power switch to shut it off and reboot it. Anybody know what's causing this and how to fix it?

Answer:Won't come out of sleep mode.

Does it wake up when you press the space bar or return key? The wake by mouse could have been changed by an update, because of being too sensitive.

If I lock my computer (or leave my computer for 5 minutes to lock automatically) and turn off my monitor when I come back after a long while I turn on my monitor and nothing will show up. My tower's power light is on so I know my computer is not off, yet even after moving my mouse around and the colour of the light on my tower and monitor changes from orange to white, nothing is displaying. The monitor does not say it's not connected, or the message that it is going into powersave mode (message given when my computer is off) so I know everything is working fine. I assume my computer has gone into sleep mode, or whatever this mode is called, but I have no clue how to get passed this except by holding down the power button on my tower and then turning it back on.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I left my computer to sleep a few nights ago and I came out and woke it up by pressing my left mouse button and it worked fine.

Today I get home and try to wake it with my mouse and nothing happens, my keyboard and my mouse cant even wake my computer, the only thing I can do is press my power button on my computer.

I have already tried going into device manager and making sure that both the keyboard and mouse have the option "allow this device to wake the computer" checked.

Any ideas?

OK...I'm stumped. I'm using my desktop computer with Windows XP. Until yesterday, I had my keyboard shortcut key conveniently programmed to put Win into a Sleep mode (not hibernate). The computer would say "preparing to standby" or something. Everything would shut off - fans, hard drive...you couldn't hear a sound. However, you could see a slow flashing light on the front of the computer. To turn it on, you pressed the power button...shaking the mouse or a keystroke wouldn't wake it.

Now...I just bought a new keyboard yesterday. It too has a shortcut key for sleep mode. However, the only programmable functions for it are: standby, hibernate, shutdown, do nothing, etc, etc. So, I figured Standby was the one to pick. Then I found out that Standby makes it does something different. The monitor goes off, but the fan is still on and the light on the front blinks...but a bit faster. Shaking the mouse will wake up the computer.

I know for sure that I didn't use Hibernate mode previously because I had it disabled.

Can anyone shed some light?

Regards,

TBaker14

Answer:sleep mode

You must change the setting before Windows loads. Reboot the Computer, you'll need to hit a "F(X)" button. Like F8 or F10 which will take you to the BIOS setup menu. This is where you can toggle sleep mode on/off. If windows starts to load, you didn't do it. You must enter the menu seconds after the computer is first turned on. If you see the Windows Screen, start over until you get into the menu.
