Explorer has stopped running, programs will not install

Question: Explorer has stopped running, programs will not install

I am not sure if it is a bug, trojan, or etc.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit, I am having problems with the same message "Explorer has stopped running", and windows starts to search for a solution. It will even do this every minute or so with no programs running. Also, if you try to install a program, I get the same Explorer stopped running message, and the application will quit. I noticed it when it started with IPHelper had the issue, but I was able to get under control.

The vista sidebar will not open, and that closes up too with the same message.

Does anyone else has a similar situation, or a fix?

I posted a hijackthis log in the other thread, since I was not sure if this is a trojan or vista being a pain.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Before I start, my handle says it all. I am a retired computer programmer/engineer/network engineer/maintenance instructor/etc. I've been using Windows since it was a pimple on DOS. So, the obvious questions should be eliminated. What I need is some serious help to avoid a total wipe-out of my system.

I've been running Win 7 since beta. I have a clean install of Ultimate (many moons ago) that recently began having problems with IE deciding not to run, and requiring a reboot to clear it up. The situation has escalated until now most programs won't run (amazingly enough IE does run) but the most obvious symptom is that a command prompt is simply a blank window. There is a serious delay between trying to close the cmd window and when it actually closes - in excess of 5 seconds. It should be almost instantaneous.

My initial thought was a root-kit. So I downloaded Sophos on another computer and installed it on a lockable USB so it wouldn't get corrupted when I ran it on the failed computer. It came up clean. I also ran an anti-virus from the USB with zero results.

My system is always protected by Avast and ThreatFire and I basically don't get viruses, but I did a thorough scan, again with zero results. I've been online with MS service, created a new user account which seemed to help for awhile then quit, and I'm at the point of doing the infamous format C:. I don't want to do that because my wife is a Korean user and I don't want to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling... Read more

Some of my programs on my computer just randomly stopped running when I try to start them up. I get the hour glass cursor for a second and then nothing happens. Any help would be great.

Answer:Some of my programs stopped running

Have you done a system restore or system repair prior to having these problems?

If it is only a couple of programs, you might want to reinstall those specific ones?!?!?!?

Is your system clean of virus and spyware?

Well, like the title says above, my Vista suddenly won't open or run any installation software.

This problem happened around October 9th. I went to Chicago for a few days, and while staying there, I received a phone call from my younger sister who told me that my father was messing with my computer.

My Vista was running totally fine before I left, no problems whatsoever. When I came home, I logged on my computer, like I normally would, but when I got to my desktop, it looked exactly like it just came out of the box. All my desktop icons were gone, background to the default, and the majority of my programs were missing.
A notice popped up saying that C++ crashed or something (I wish I got a screenshot of the other notices that popped up along with that one).

I had no idea what my dad did to my computer but I was pissed off. Soon, I did a system restore, the day before I left for Chicago.

Everything was back to normal but Vista would no longer allow me to open up and run installation programs. I've tried looking for other installation programs (I think it was called Installation Wizard or something, I'm not really sure).

Just recently I downloaded Windows Installer.
The only that actually installed was the Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu file. (I'm not really that computer smart >_>) It installed, told me to reboot my computer, and so I did. I still wasn't able to run installation progr... Read more

Hi there,
I've been using Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic ver I really like and trust it. On Windows XP.

But suddenly last night on my desktop, it disappeared from my tray. I couldn't find it. I tried to reinstall some components. It said it did but even after a reboot it didn't show up.

So then I uninstalled it, and tried to reinstall it--over and over and over. I even re-downloaded the file: antivir_workstation_win7_en_h.exe

Each time I tried to install antivir, i got this error message:

Some files could not be created.
Please close all applications, reboot windows and restart this installation.
Then, in red, it lists:

Cannot create basic/avadmin.exe
Cannot create basic\avcenter.exe
Cannot create basic\avcmd.exe
Cannot create basic\avconfig.exe
Cannot create basic\avgnt.exe
Cannot create basic\avguard.exe
Cannot create basic\avnotify.exe
Cannot create basic\avscan.exe
Cannot create basic\guardgui.exe
Cannot create basic\licmgr.exe
Cannot create basic\sched.exe
Cannot create basic\update.exe
Cannot create basic\wsctool.exe
I do not have antivir on my computer now. It just won't install it.

So, I got a little worried, and I tried installing the two other anti-virus programs that Gizmo over at recommends (because I trust him, too) AND none of those would install. They all act as if they install, but the actual programs are missing, and when I try to run from the shortcut on my desktop (which als... Read more

As my title indicates, I've got a few machines. They're all running nicely. (Well, except for the Surface, but that's just the way the surface is...).

I'm VERY interested in upgrading to Windows 10 when it is released, especially since MS states it'll be free. (I understand the benefit of a uniform user base, so MS wins if we all upgrade.) From what I hear, W10 should be an improvement over W7.

My question: with all my machines, the idea of clean installs and having to relicense and reinstall the huge number of 3rd party programs I have is daunting. In fact, I probably will not upgrade just to avoid that hassle.

Is there ANY way to perform an in-place OS upgrade? Meaning, all the installed programs stay installed?

I'm running Win XP and I've just started having a strange problem. When I try to run certain programs (a chess game, an icon editing prog) or functions within a program (when I try and load an external script in a 3d graphics package) a window pops up saying that windows is preparing to install Microsoft Office or Roxio (both of these are programs I do have installed but I installed them months ago, long before this problem started happening). If I hit cancel the installation backs off then starts again. I have to hit cancel several times before it stops and the prog that I was trying to run opens up. If I let the 'installation' run it's course it tells me I need to insert the disk. Is it possible there are temporary install files that didn't get properly removed hiding somewhere and are being called inadvertantly?
Any suggestions would be great.

Followed by:
A "Warning" box then prompted to select ok

I tried to use the Search function, and it has been disabled for 2 days, at least on my end. I am looking for a tool to identify and determine how many running processes are necessary (currently, I run between 47-50), and how to stop the non-essential ones from running all the time, which makes my supposedly malware-free computer work slower than grass growing in December. Also, I can't figure out why certain programs, such as Microsoft Streets and Trips for example. It now asks for installation disks, when I never had one because it was already loaded when I bought the computer. It just doesn't make any sense anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Used and Comp-fused -

Answer:Excessive Running Processes, Some Programs Ask for Install Disk When I Never Had One!

47 to 50 is not bad. I have 45.

There is only a problem if legit or non legit processes are hogging your cpu. If they don't then stoping them won't speed up your pc.

Check your processes to see if any are using a high percentage of your cpu.

Ok, here's my trouble..I am running in safe mode, when I am in norm mode system locks up fairly quickly after I try to access any program especially IE. I have tried to download and install Stopzilla and get a message telling me system admin has policies set into place preventing install. I am running XP home on a HP pavillion. So I have a couple of issues going on. I have ran Spy-bot and AVG. Spy-bot is clean but I do have a txt. file for AVG showing alot of not tested files and also have ran hijackthis, which at my level of experience I can't interpet the data due to lack of knowlege. I did notice from reading another post that I need to change the program name for(hijackthis). Is it to late, do I need to uninstall and rename it when reinstalling?

As I mentioned before if you suspect malware is causing problems, then you need to read the link I gave you earlier .. this one

If you decide you want to follow those procedures then you need to remember to attach the 4 requested logs once completed to a NEW post in Malware Removal section and not here in this forum.

Ok, I am going crazy.
This problem started two days ago out of sudden.

I noticed that I could not see the running programs in my taskbar, searched alot for it and none of the solutions helped.
Then I realized that I cannot install application either, getting an error about the windowsinstaller, so I tried to reinstall it and got error that update.inf cannot be cheked due to some serive called cryphtography something I again searched the web and none of the solutions worked.
Then I noticed that I cant copy or paste either ...anywehere or in any application (so I cant even backup copy my files).

So then I gave up and thought that I will do repair. but the problem is that when I run "run a setup now and then F8 for accepting the license then I dont get the repair option. So I instead tried the second option which is to repair using recovery console and I did everything according to this manual from and no luck there either

Please help me I really dont want to do a clean install.

Sincerely Nina

It was all fine until yesterday. I copied over a game from my laptop the night before (I just installed 7 on this computer recently, was copying over stuff from my laptop) and also finished installing World of Warcraft and not long after I turned off the computer.

The next day I switched it on and didn't notice anything at first but some programs wouldn't run (Winamp would have a blank space where the music list normally is).
I tried installing some virtual drive programs such as magic disc and power iso which I usually use for isos I rip onto the computer (I lost some discs before so I've been doing that recently) but the magic disc programs wouldn't run properly and power iso wouldn't progress during its installation.
I tried installing some anti spyware like AVG and Avast (Spyware doctor detected 300 odd tracking cookies that appeared in the past week I installed, way more than it did with my vista laptop) but they would just either not respond (and then pop up with a message saying it took a while and wouldn't respond) or just not even progress when it was installing (on the part where it begins putting down files)

Explorer itself is slow and takes a while to load when on "My computer" and usually wouldn't display USB drives. Once it did but it didn't actually open it up when I clicked on it and prevented the window from responding.
I have used task manager to close all these down when they wouldn't.

When I tried switching off my computer it just stayed on ... Read more

Before I start, i should say im new to this website, so if this is the wrong place to post this, im sorry.
Ok, so for the past week or 2, I have been having serious problems relating to windows explorer! Every time I try to start up my laptop I receive an error saying 'windows explorer has stopped running!' In the error box there is the option to 'check online for help' and to 'restart explorer.' Neither of these do anything as they only make the box vanish then reapear. If i click the X, the error vanishes for about 3 seconds then reapears! The only way i seem to be able to fix it is by waiting a little and it goes away after i click the X.
When this error is 'active,' none of the desktop items load and i can not click on anything on the tool bar apart from when i click the X and the error is off screen. I can also access task manager and i was suggested to try starting a new task and typing 'explorer.exe' which sometimes works.
Another part of the error seems to be that whenever i try to open anything in my documents, it takes an extremely long time to load. This is even worse when i try to open a video as the sound plays but the video runs slowly (skips several frames.) although games and websites seems to work fine!
Please recommend something to fix it, i have tried both virus and malware checks and its come up clean, and i need my laptop next week as im going to be doing a college course in computing.
Thanks in advance!

Hey guys (first post), I've had this bug for about a week now and it's maddening. D3 comes out tomorrow and I just can't actually install the damn thing.

It came about after installing a new theme, since then I've replaced all those files with the originals, gone back to default theme and uninstalled everything related that I could think of. I've also virus checked and I can't restore back as this is a new install of Windows with no prior points.

The only way I can get to the file I want to upload is to spam backspace until I get to the root folders.

I literally can't change the install place of this / don't know where it's even trying to install it to..

Anyone have any ideas at all?

Answer:Windows Explorer BUG - Can't install programs/upload files pics inside

run sfc /scannow tool to see if it could find and fix missing/corrupt system files or perhaps run a system restore before that date where you install custom theme.

I apologize that I don't really know what to say here. I am a retail merchandiser and data collector who works for several companies and I receive all my work through the company websites. My computer runs windows vista basic and I prefer IE. I have tried chrome but didn't like it and use firefox a bit, but one of my companies requires IE. While my computer has always run slowly, I think my current problem started after going to watch a few episodes of a tv show I watch that weren't at my normal site. I took me nearly 10 hours to watch two 1-hr shows and the video kept restarting itself. I noticed then that my cpu useage is at 100%.
I have run avg, ccleaner, and malwarebytes over the past several days. Today I found out about roguekiller and ran that. Something about my security settings in IE keeps blocking downloads so I had to download roguekiller using firefox. The site that mentioned RK also mentioned this one. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance!

Hello there TechSupport Forum!

It's been a long while since I've had any computer issues thanks to your well instructed threads.

Just 2 days ago...I went to open some programs (skype is one example) among others. Immediately when I started a call with no video error message came up to say 'Skype has stopped working......' and then it will tell me windows will look for a solution and suggest it. Well it only told me to update the program. In this case I had the latest skype. So not really a solution here.

I have a DV6 HP windows 7 laptop.

When checking event viewer... the error says:

Any help in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Answer:Programs have stopped working (causes crash of programs)

I don't remember...nor can I find the rules about bumping a thread. So I know you all are busy, but I still need help with this weird situation. I've restored to an earlier date, disabled all non important processes via msconfig, reinstalled the non working programs. But alas they all are not a solution. I'm not sure what else to do. I'm thinking some .dll file might be corrupt in windows 7. Just unsure how to go about that or find out if that is the case.

Thank you!

get that several times a day. mainly from which is the one web site that I keep on all day, every day, and is the #1 reason I have a PC. with checking email every 60-90 minutes, research once or twice per day on average, and on line shopping once every 8 weeks or so. but it's the TVguide web site that I get this several times an hour. not the only one, but it's the only one that happens so much I can remember it. so, what is it and is this something I can fix so it will stop?

Answer:stopped running due to a long running script.

Try a web browser other than Internet Explorer, like Firefox or PaleMoon.

I've been trying to fix my brother's computer for a while, but every Spy-bot and Ad-aware continuously find 60+ bad items and something has recently caused most programs to stop working completely that can be solved with a restart and crossed fingers. Recently a restart brought up a very colorful rendition of the screen that wasn't a good sign as I try to fix the computer. So I turn here. I'm pretty sure I got rid of the 'win antispyware 2005' malware he had running for the longest time. I had ZoneAlarm (deactivates the Windows default firewall) for a long time then had to uninstall it for Medal of Honor:Airbourne which required the windows firewall to be running (to add itself to the allow list). Then I got Jetico Personal Firewall and I've had Avast! On-Access scanner for the entire ordeal. I think that's about everything. Extra.txt is attached.

Edit: I tried the panda activescan. I downloaded the plug-in, but after 1.5 hours of running the scan it remained at 0%. If it's neccessary, I could run it overnight.

New to the forum! I recently installed Win 7 on a second Hard drive. Is it possible to run the programs I had installed on the Vista Hard drive? Both are HD's are still installed.

Answer:Running dual Boot w/ Vista and Win 7, question on running programs

You need to install the programs in both OS's, & a licence for each install.

I have installed superanti spyware and that found some stuff to delete, Im quite computer illiterate, the internet is running at about 4 or 5 for speed and it should be 8 according the internet provider, they said everything is fine from their end, however I may have programs running on the computer that shouldnt be and are slowing it down, Im not sure if this is a spyware issue, virus, program not needed? Under the windows task manager the system idle process is 98 under the cpu, everything else is 0, I dont know if that makes a difference?

The past three days, it's happened about twice a day to me. Just at seemingly random times, my currently running programs stop working and attempting to open new programs just results in the program's icon being momentarily highlighted in the taskbar, and then it disappears, as if the program automatically closed itself. This even works for simple programs like Notepad or Paint. Any currently running programs usually crash or stop working. All of my tabs in Chrome will have the pages using Shockwave crash, and attempting to open any new tabs or navigate to new pages will just result in a white screen. The computer is fast and responsive on the desktop (ie, I can open and close the start menu and highlight programs on my desktop with a mouse rollover), and nothing on my computer is frozen, just not working.
This all happens just at one single moment when everything stops working right, and I have to manually shut down the computer, because going through Windows to shut down or log off does not result in anything. Upon startup, everything is back to normal. CTRL+ALT+DEL command results in a black screen with the cursor visible, but nothing happens.
I was recently infected with quite a bit of malware, but as far as I know, I got it all off. I don't know if this is was "malware" or just my computer being a bleep. What do you guys think?

Answer:Currently running programs stop working, and new programs won't start.

What malware did you find and remove?  What did you do to find and remove it?  You may not have gotten all of it.

I noticed this issue a little while back. As I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.
A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background.
I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.

I really hope this makes sense.. it's getting frustrating.

Answer:Two desktops running at the same time. Background programs running.

It sounds like you have a virtual desktop.

This is not something that could 'just happen' in Windows 7. You would need to install a third party program to do this.

So if you did not install anything that might add virtual desktop capability, or this is not a situation where you inherited or obtained this computer from someone else and are not quite sure what is installed on it, then I would suggest first running virus and malware scans to start.

Hi. a while ago I used msconfig to remove some programs that automatically on startup but now I have noticed that close to all of my services and startup programs have stopped loading on startup even though they are all checked in the msconfig window. I have tried rebooting in diagnostic startup but I haven't been able to fix it. I used the admin tools to set some services to run automatically but it doesn't help Steam, Norton, and my other programs to run and many services revert to manual startup. I also cannot run any programs, the only ones that seem to work are norton scan and firefox. Wizards and the system restore tool won't open, I don't know what to do

Answer:Startup programs not running, programs not opening

Try and use Start up CPL to add the files back to start up

To use start-up CPL

Click Start
>Control panel
>>Double click on 'Start up'

When that is open go through the tabs and add the programs you want to load on start up

I keep getting messages such as ‘windows explorer has stopped working ‘and ‘Host process for windows services stopped working’. Answer:computer running to slow, to many nothing programs running

Hello and Welcome to TSF

I see nothing malicous in your HJT log but I see you have P2P software installed on your machine (Morpheus). We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to infections.

There are some processes that you do not need running at startup, you can click Start/Run and type in msconfig. Click the start-up tab, here is where you will find everything that is running at start-up and also remove from startup.

Please create a restore point before attempting to stop any processes from running for safety reasons

Hi there, thanks for viewing this.

Recently, my internet explorer 7 and firefox has been running quite slowly. After googling a bit, I found out that this problem could be caused by the iexplore.exe virus.

Many iexplore.exe was running in the processes tab of the Windows task manager when my internet browsers were not in use. This may have caused the slowness.

Hi, I need help on this one: when I open the Windows Explorer (Windows 2000) and double-click on a document to open it, the program (e.g. MS Excel when I double-clicked on an Excel document) starts in the background, Windows Explorer stays automatically in front. Did anyone ever hear of this? How can I stop this and make the program with the selected file type start automatically in front?

Any suggestions welcomed! Thanks.

Alright well to start this I don't know when it began. Maybe a couple days ago however am not sure exactly how it all occurred. So I am running into a issue with my laptop where it will run certain programs but not others and it is causing some rather large issues with things.

List of Programs that Work (A Very Short List):
Google Chrome
Windows Task Manager
Google Talk
Kaspersky Pure 3.0

Programs that Don't Work:
Windows Media Player
Media Player Classic
Gamestop Now
Apple QuickTime
Apple Itunes
Many others don't work. They crash without ever once showing any sign of launching.

This is a huge issue as I cannot watch any videos on my laptop at all currently and I need to be able to watch videos due to classes.

Steam launches, updates, then crashes when it goes to load the main program. QuickTime and WMP and MPC all show no sign of loading at all and just fail to launch.

I have attached a screen grab of my processes running. Do need some help as this is a HUGE annoyance. I cannot find my re-install disk that came with the laptop so some help would be AWESOME! I might have a restore point from a long time back.

If additional information is needed please say so.

I would also like to note that I did a full system scan. Didn't find anything in the files, system structure, registry or anything else computer was clean.

I am not computer illiterate and have no issues messing with my system registry if needed to remove something that is running.

Answer:Programs Crash Upon Running (Not all Programs) Need Help.

One thing for sure, in that picture you have too many instances of Google Chrome running, may be impacting resources available. If Chrome seemed to be actually closed when you did the screenshot it could mean Chrome isn't removing itself from RAM when it is closed.

As the title says my laptops Fan has stopped running, story goes i was minding my own business not paying attention to the fan & i moved to get comfortable when it started making this horrid grinding noise it kept up for about a minute before stopping & turning off, i turned it back on only to hear it again so i immediately turned it back off.

I opened the back up expecting to see something caught in the van only to find i'd have to go run around to find my other screw driver.
So i just closed it back up & now the fan isn't running what so ever, my question is will my PC be fine if i don't torture it with massive streams of pron?

Also it's a piece of **** DELL if that tickles your fancy.

Answer:Fan stopped running

you'll need a new fan for sure if you try and use it for extended periods of time you'll just destroy your hardware(and for your info its porn not pron) hope this helps.

My F20-137 is almost 2 months old. One weeks ago, the pre-installed Adobe Reader stopped working (doesn't open at all and no message pops up, nothing happens after clicking the icon). Then the same problem happened to Windows media player and iTunes. Media Centre works fine. Can any one help, please.

Answer:F20-137: Some programs stopped working

Did you check if the new installation of these particular programs helps to solve the issues? The Adobe reader issue occurs sometimes on my notebook. The simply reinstallation have solved the problem. Also the disabling of the Adobe background process was successfully.
In my opinion you have installed 3rd software and it could be possible that this software has a bad influence on the standard programs.
Well, additionally you can try to use the system restore tool to roll back the OS to the early point.

Answer:Some startup programs can't be stopped

When running msconfig, check the 'services' tab as well as the 'startup' tab.

In the run box type services.msc and press enter. Review every item that says 'started' in the status column. You can find out what they do, and whether you want them, and even how to stop them starting, in the following link

An older program which I like to use several times a week suddenly stopped functioning about a month ago. After using it regularly for years, suddenly clicking on the icon produced a few microseconds of activity then nothing.
This does not appear to coincide with any
Windows Update, or anything else I could pinpoint, but maybe I missed something.
It did not appear in the Control Panel Add/Remove list and I ended up manually removing it and trying to re-install. Clicking on Setup.exe on the CD
now produces the same microseconds of activity then nothing. Neither will it load from the Add/Remove utility.
I have since found another program that attempting to Setup produces the same non-reaction.
In the meantime I've downloaded many spyware & registry programs and tried
them all, as well as Norton Utilities and can find no specific problem.
After I began troubleshooting the non-response of that program, my computer had a fit of madly dialing online by itself, but again I could find nothing and SOMETHING I did eradicated that problem.
Any clues?

Hi all i need serious help.

All of a sudden some of my programs stopped working, for example catalysst control center is suposed to start as soon as vista starts, but now it gives me an error like:

"CCC.exe has stopped working"

Same with some others...

Yes i ran AVG, i ran malware, and superantispyware, none of them finds anything.
I cant even load daemon tools now, it gives me some error: "Engine loading was failed", cant uninstall it, it gives me another error, and some of the programs like netlimiter if i start them from my objectdock dock they automaticly stop working, only when i start them from the normal .exe they dont crash.

All this happened all of a sudden...anyone has any ideas??

Thx a lot in advance,

Answer:Programs stopped working

Hi Muff

What Firewall are you using? Have you configured your security software so that the Catalyst Control Centre is a trusted start-up program. Is Windows Defender or UAC blocking it from normal start-up. Did you run the Display Driver as an Administrator when you installed it?

Personally I found the Catalyst Control Centre lagging a little on start-up anyway so I only installed the Display Driver instead.

I'm assuming you are running the latest version of the ATI Driver?

I might be wrong, but it may well be a 'Permissions' issue.

One more thing, are you running 32Bit or 64Bit, and if 64, is ObjectDock compatible with it?

Kind Regards

i recently bought this PC in december. in february i played a round of system shock 1 (one of my favourite games), and it ran fine, no need for DOSbox or any of that silliness. however, in recent weeks, i discovered that my PC no longer likes running some DOS programs, including SS1, the tomb raider gold installer (which is how i discovered the problem in the first place), and a few of the older demos i got off

the exact error i get is:

(program path and/or filename, example would be CDSHOCK.exe)
The NTVDM CPU h as encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:c000 IP:dddd OP:ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

the string of random letters and numbers is always the same no matter the program.

what happens is, i run the program, it goes to a black screen then immediately back to windows, complete with error message and beep, i must choose "close" then maximize the DOS window again, which then disappears. if i choose ignore then maximize, i just get the error message again.

cmd.exe runs just fine. several other DOS-based programs work as they should (in other words, they don't really work, but they give me the proper response.) running all DOS programs in DOSbox does not create an error (SS1 works fine in DOSbox, for example... a little slow, though, and i'd rather not use it.)

i have tried every solution i can think of where people had similar issues, but nothing works. i've scanned and re-scanned with nod32 and ad-... Read more

Answer:some, but not all, DOS programs stopped working

XP just isn't made to run dos programs without the help of third party programs. Some programs do work, others don't and you won't get any help from microsoft since they stopped dos support a looong time ago. My guess is some security update decided some operations your games were doing are now illicit and a security threat for XP.

I stick with Dosbox or VDMsound, whichever works best. Each program has options that allow to speed up or slow down the emulation speed, you may try to play with those settings to get your games running fine.

You may have some luck running your dos programs in compatibility mode (right-click the shortcut => properties => compatibility) but I wouldn't count on that.

This one might be a key to the others that have stopped working (I hope); "Netcheck.exe has stopped working" and like the others there is no "solution online". As I stated in another post, Windows 7 which is on another hard drive was working perfectly several months ago, but I was switching between hard drives and now even my Vista drive is not responding.

Answer:Many Programs Have Stopped Working

In addition, none of my anti-malware programs nor anti-virus start. XYZ has stopped working is all I get. I tried running MBAR anti root kit, but even that has stopped. Any ideas?

Hi everyone,

I have a rather odd problem. I've had Vista Ultimate (or whatever the 64 bit version is called) installed on my computer for almost a year now. Everything has worked perfectly until fairly recently. I noticed that one of my startup programs had stopped working (SoundMax32) and was showing up as an application error. This was around the time I installed the 64 bit version of iTunes, so I figured maybe my audio settings had been changed. The computer continued to work for another 2 weeks, and then yesterday, completely out of the blue, ALL of my programs (startup and otherwise) have stopped loading and are showing the application error message.

The thing I don't get is that Vista still boots up with no problems. I thought initially that the problem was limited to my 32 bit applications, but IE 64 bit doesn't work either?

I'm about 2 days from just reformatting and doing a complete reinstall. But if anyone has any answers I would be grateful.

And no, I did not install any application between the last bootup that was fine, and the one yesterday. I've run windows update and updated everything but the programs still will not load (I'm writing this from my laptop because IE and Firefox give me the same error message). It is very bizarre.

Any help please!

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a point before when
the SoundMax32 quit?

My HP Support Assistant, Hardware Diagnostic Tools stopped working,  I have tried removing them and downloading current copies, but they still don't work.  When I try to run HP Support Assistant, I get a msg that HP Assistant Installer has stopped working so I can't install it.   When I double click on Hardware Diagnostic Tools, I get a message that it has stopped working.   Hardware Diagnostic Tools is listed in my Programs in Control Panel.  HP Active Support LIbrary is listed in Programs too.  I tried to download Microsoft Fix It tool, but I can't get it to work either.  A couple of small programs I downloaded to scan my files also wouldn't work.   Help!

Alright, I'm not entirely sure where to put this thread so I apologize if it is in the wrong spot.

I had a virus a while back (a couple of weeks ago). I received a pop up asking if Trend Micro should block something and I went to click block, and, well... missed. I accidentally allowed it. I ran a scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-malware and got a few viruses or infected objects. Instead of restarting directly after the scan, I waited. Bad choice. After I restarted I got many pop-ups says there was an unhandled win32 exception that occured in [xxxx] the numbers always changed in the []'s (An example of two I just got were GoogleUpdate.exe [4040], mbam.exe [5060] however, googleupdate is not just an exception at [4040] there are other numbers that appear too). If I do click Debug I get sent to Just-In-Time debugger for Visual Studio 2010 and I can;t even use it. I tried scanning some more running programs to fix the registry. I tried running a disk cleaner and defragmenter. It seemed like a good idea.

Didn't really work. It seemed to isolate the issue to just win32 exceptions at GoogleInstaller (when clicking debug it is listed as GoogleUpdate) and RealPlayer. I finally had enough of the problem and did a system restore yesterday. Only problem: I can't go back more than 5 days ago. Right smack in the middle of the issue. I was hoping maybe it might work or I could continue to system restore it further back. Neither of those ideas really worked. I still had the issue (only now... Read more

I am using Vista 64 bit version,

My problem is most programs stop working.
ones that I have tried using are skype, windows live, registry cleaners... pretty much all programs except a few and of coarse my internet programs are all fine. I tried a clean boot but got no where. Ran sfc /scannow as admin and got some files are corrupted and not all are able to be fixed.

this all seamed to start when I ran a virus scan using avast that I had on this computer for quite some time. It of course found 5 infected files I cleaned them, and it recommended doing something with the registry. well while scanning the reg my lovely computer over heated and shut down, now i am left with this issue .

same thing happens as well in safe mode. Guess i'm doomed to buy windows 7 or find a copy of vista to re install.

From the past five-ish days we had no internet due to a typhoon. So I said to myself, "I should copy CoD from my friend so I atleast would have something to do on the weekend." So thats what I did. Earlier, I tried to play the game for the first time.

P.S. I copied the game via my external hard drive.
I copied the game folder from his C: drive. NOT THE INSTALLER.

Surprisingly, the game ran well. I had 0 problems while playing the game, and after around 30mins, I got bored and decided to listen to music while facebook-ing.

how did I connect to the internet? Using the portable Wi-Fi hotspot on my mobile phone.

While I was using facebook and listening to music, Google Chrome suddenly stopped responding, and my music player started to go crazy. The music that was playing went choppy (as if you are pressing the Pause and Play button rapidly).

So I tried to restart Chome and the player, and for some reason they won't close. (from my experience when a program stopped working you can force close it). But this won't, I couldn't even shut down or restart my PC, So I force shut down my PC via the power button.

After I forced shutdown, I tried booting my laptop again and it ran well for a good 10mins, and after that, there goes the problem again. Therefore I had to force shutdown again.

anyone knows a solution to this problem?

I just re-formatted this laptop also around 5 days ago because I could get pass the windows w... Read more

Hi guys,

I have decided to join having tried several things I have read in posts and my own knowledge to no avail.

I am looking to fix this issue without formatting if possible.

I cannot get my AVG antivirus to update, nor windows defender, windows update or eset. I am using 32bit vista ultimate.

when i go on sites such as the manual update files for avg, the page will not display.

i have tried regsrving the .dlls i have stopped and started services, i have ran umpteen online and offline scans. anti rootkit, ccleaner. hijackthis found nothing either. host file has no extra entries.

i have deleted updates last installed.
all of which has not helped
before i go insane, has anyone any other ideas??

much appreciated, thanks.

I came home yesterday and my Windows 7 installation had stopped loading programs. I was able to boot into the OS and run Explorer, but nothing else would run, even from the Program Files folders. I'd click on program icons and the hourglass would appear, then disappear after a few seconds, and nothing would happen. Also I could get to a certain point in the Control Panel, but when I tried to initiate a System Image Backup for example I couldn't do that either.

I tried repairing and then restoring the OS and now I just get a black screen after I log in to Windows. After trying to restore the OS, I got a message saying that the restore function was unable to restore the drive and the OS files remained unchanged.

I think it might be the drive so I'm going to buy a new drive (OS drive recommendations most welcome!). I'm curious as to what the problem is though. I booted into a Windows XP installation in a different drive, and it looks like I can browse the drive Windows 7's installed in fine, but somehow something happened to the OS installation.

If you have any ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it, let me know what your thoughts are, thanks!

Hey, I've been using my computer for a while now and it's been fine but recently it's started not opening some programs. When i try to load something up it looks like the program is loading but then goes back to the desktop. Or when i click on the program icon the windows error report comes up and stopps the program loading. Also my games have loaded up fine but as soon as i get into the actual gameplay the program crashes instantly with no warning or anything. There's nothing in the log files about any errors and it's like it never even happened. I've recently installed a Gforce FX 5200 and have got the latest drivers and directX 9 but it's just going crazy every time. I've formatted and reinstalled windows XP like 5 times trying to fix this but it just won't happen. Does ALL information get whiped off of the hard-drive when you format it or can things get left behind. This is driving me mad. I just want my computer back. any help would be sooooo amazing.Thankyou

Hi! I am going to explain the whole history to the problem...

I'm using Windows XP but wanted to dualboot with linux, so I started to download it and making my Pc ready for the install, I had to buy a new DVD player so I could read DVD disks ( my old one got broke)... Well Installed it and did some other stuff, did get some problem with the PC at the same time but worked it out with help from a friend. Anyway, after nearly 2 days working with getting all fixed I finally was done today morning. Turned my PC off and tonight I turned it on ready with all the stuff. Then I see that nearly all my desktop icons are "white" also are the ones in "all programs" And when I try to open any of them, programs, games or even my internet browser... (for example):

Windows cannot open this file:
Mozilla Firefox.lnk
Windows needs to know what program created it....etc
And then I can ofc choose to search the web or search the computer after the program...

So my question is, how to fix this? I really want to install linux and dont have my windows damaged MY friends says "reinstall whole windows" but I got so much important data on it so I dont want to.
I got 2 thoughts that maybe caused this damage...
1, Got virus on my Pc I belive, but my anti virus cant find it, it cant open allot of files.. (using NOD32, also ad-aware for spewers)
2, Got a program called CleanUp thats removes stuff like temporary internet files and such.. Maybe it damaged something els... Read more

hello experts.
something has taken control of my computer. i hope u can help me.
most of my shortcuts dont connect to their program and even in the "program files" folder they wont come up unless i use the "run as" instead of the "open" option.
i also cant open or operate such basic things as the "control panel" or the "run - msconfig".

it all started after i downloaded some registry entry which turned out to be false, but it didnt happen immediately.
i went on to install a new software, which was clean, and rebooted.
then i was prompted by my "kerio firewall" and "lavasoft adwatch" to accept or deny some changes (much more then the usual amount when installing new software).
i accepted some before realizing it all seems strange and since i couldnt determine their purpose started declining them.
wheb i rebooted again, some of my startup programs didnt come up and most of my programs stopped responding normally or at all.
i ran "ccleaner" for my registry, but it couldnt complete the cleaning.
most programs wont work like they should.
any idea?

Answer:most of my programs stopped responding normally

the message i get when double clicking is:
"this file doesnt have a program associated with it for preforming this action. create an association in the folder options control panel".
i shold correct myself and say that i have access to some programs in the "control panel" but not to "add or remove programs" for example.

Recently I've bought a new Mainboard for my computer, because my old one was messed up. (one memory slot was broken, and 3/4 SATA connections was broken.)
Because of this, I had to install Vista again. Not so hard to do, backed it up already, so no trouble.

Now, running the fresh installed Vista, I've ran into some troubles.
1. Every single game I try to play, crashes after a while, (sometimes after 2 minutes, sometimes after half an hour). It is giving the message: for example: Crysis.exe stopped working.
2. My internet explorer often gets the same message. Most of the times after 15 minutes, but sometimes it runs a lot longer.
3. Some other files stop working too, some .dll's which I can't remember the name of ( I believe one is called Desktop Manager or something like that.)

(quick search in the log files: All Application Errors came up with different .dll files)

You'll understand, that this is really annoying, since it is a fresh install of Vista, so you wouldn't expect any trouble.

Can anyone help me please?

Answer:Several programs stopped working.

It acted as if somebody had unplugged the AC, but the outlet was still hot. In fact when I unplugged the DC power plug from the laptop, it heard that little arcing sound very briefly. So now it will run fine, but only on battery, and that battery has about an hour left on it. More detail: I've had problems with the DC power connection on the PC for quite a while; the wire in the male connector breaks, and I buy a new charger. This is because of a stupid Lenovo design where using it in tablet mode (portrait) results in the power plug sticking out of the bottom of the PC and jabbing you in the chest - as time went on, I found a 90 degree adapter in the internet. Anyway, after 3 or 4 new power supplies, the female connector in the pc succumbed to the stress. I didn't want to take the PC apart, so I bought a docking station and used the PC with the docking station attached - almost all of my use is plugged into AC. I developed heat related problems over the years, and the compressed air can only did so much. I finally opened up the PC to blow out all dust, and that reduced my operating temperatures by about 10 deg C so that was good. I also decided to replace that DC power/modem wire assembly - only $5 on eBay. Removing the little board that goes over the wire assembly (and on towards the fan) was very difficult and I ended up stripping some of the screw heads, so I ended up using a miniature extractor tool to get them all out - had to really press hard and at angles, b... Have been setting up a new computer for a friend running Windows 7. As I was just getting to the end of installing all the programs that he requested I received the following message on startup: "Invalid or damaged Bootable partition". This has gone away now but now I have the following after booting into Windows: Autorun exe has stopped working: APPCRASH AUTORUN.EXE unknown, etc.
What can I do to repair this?

Answer:Autorun.exe has stopped running

Suggest you check this first -
Click the Start button and select "Control Panel".
Double-click on the System icon.
In the left pane click on Advanced system settings.
Click the "Settings?" button under Performance on the Advanced tab of the System Properties screen that is displayed.
Select the Data Execution Prevention tab on the Performance Options screen that is displayed.
If you have "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" already selected then you need to either change the setting to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services" or add autorun.exe to the exception list. To add autorun.exe (depending on which you are using) to the exception list do the following:
Click the "Add?" button at the bottom of the screen.
You will then see an "Open" dialog. You need to navigate to the folder that autorun.exe is in and select the program.
Once you have added autorun.exe to the exceptions list click the OK button. You will need to restart Windows before the change takes effect.
Once you have completed the steps above Windows should allow installation to run with DEP turned on.

Answer:Windows 7 programs stopped responding

Hi Jonny,

First off, lets see if Windows can fix itself. Please do the following:

1. Click the Start Orb, and in the search box, type cmd
2. On the list that appears, right-click on cmd, and choose Run as Administrator
3. In the cmd window that has opened, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

This command will let Windows scan for and attempt to fix any problematic system files. Let it finish, and then see if you have the same problem.

Hi i have had this problem for a while now and it is really fustarating as i have spent over £1000 on this gaming pc. It would be great if you could help me.
On a regular occurrence games and some programs are crashing or not responding. It usually takes a few hours to crash on a low spec game and mayebe 10mins to crash on a high spec game with the graphics turned down. My pc is a high spec pc therefore this shouldn't happen.
Things I have Done

Puchased more fans to increase the airflow
Purchased a liquid cpu cooler
Turned up the RPM on my gpu fan
closed all running tasks while playing a game (still crashes)
My ssd only has 6gb left however i have moved my games over to my hd. Still that didnt seem to help.
When playing a game my gpu temperature reaches 64degrees.

I hope you can help!

Microsoft word doesn't open, and hp support assistant doesn't work, and i cant update my computer. All the other Microsoft office programs work though. When i try to open hp support assistant, it says that i don't have the permission, even as an administrator. The windows update doesn't even open, from both the shortcut and from the control panel. But I can get it to work if i run it as an administrator. How can i get all these programs to work again?

Answer:A few of my programs all stopped working at the same time.

By far the simplest fix is to use Windows System Restore to roll Windows back to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.Video: Fixing a problem using System RestoreIf that doesn't help, try restoring an earlier system image or backup. No suitable restore point, backup, or image available? The other day, I downloaded a new version of Java. All of a sudden, my browsers stopped working, + Cursclient(a program who required internet).(These are the only programs I am currently using that are affected.)

Now, that I've wandered around on the internet via another computer, I've stumbled across several resolutions, but all of them seem quite hard as I can't access internet to download stuff. But, I've typed a netsh comment, and the browser is now working 20% of the time. It opens sites, but not all of them + it uses approx 2 minutes to open every single site. I assume they won't open, as it times out.

I can still play games online and use ventrilo + Spotify etc.

The latter I have not done because it seems more complicated & I don't have any Windows CD (This notebook came already installed with it)
I did try System File Checker (cmd sfc /scannow as admin), but the result says:
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I don't think I have changed anything in recent times, except there are some windows update going on:

Answer:Programs Stopped Working as Soon as they are started

Try booting into safe mode and see if it work fine. At booting the computer, continually press f8 (typically it is this key; sometimes it is a different f key) until a menu screen pops up. Choose safe mode and see if you are able to open these programs.

Hi, my IE7 stopped automatically logging me into programs. It still remembers some of the passwords. I am using OS XP with service pack 3. This actually started to happen I think when I called HP and they reset my bios. I have checked all my settings on my internet tools. If I log into my programs, close IE and reopen it, then it will still log me into programs automatically, but once I reboot, it does not. Any helpful adivce would be most appreciated!

I am having a problem using a program called Incredimail and also acccessing a web site called I have successfully used these in the past but have been unable to use them after downloading a program called "Capture It!" When I realized I was having a problem I removed "Capture It!" from my system. I also removed any reference to it in the registry. Still unable to access the web site or open the program I reinstalled my operating system. Alas, no luck.

I am running Windows 98SE ver 4.10 on an Intel Celeron Processor with 256 MB of RAM.

Specific problems
Incredimail: The program will not open. I can download files to the image gallery, re-install and re-configure the program, but when I try to open the program it shuts down. When I attempt to view the webcams or broadcast, an internet browser window will open but nothing comes up. The windows remain blank.

I hope I have provided enough information for someone to assist me. Thanks to anyone who can provide me with some information.

Answer:Programs stopped working in 98SE

download spybot search and destroy or adaware from, and run one of those.

Sirs: After lurking the forums I think I have a unique problem. Am running Windows 7 sp1, amd quad core, 6 gigs of ram. A couple of months ago, after either rebooting or logging back in, my computer began popups saying that varoius programs have stopped working. For instance: "Iomega automatic backup has stopped working". In a box under it: "Check online for a solution and close the program". And in another box: "Close the program". Other programs that quit working at the same time: Mesh operating environment, Adobe reader, Adobe acrobat, IE, Cyberlink, and one or two others that don't come to mind right now. Allmost all the other programs on my computer won't open and give the same popup. My virus program, Avast opens easily, but thats about it. I can open some programs by going to their file location, changing its compatability to Vista and then opening as admin. Threatfire on the other hand won't open unless I change its compatability to windows 7. Anyway, did virus check, ran threatfire, and some other things I can't remember right now. If I restore to an earlier period my computer works OK. That is until I log out/in or reboot. Then it goes back to its screwed up self. I'm reluctant to re-install windows as I have a finance/check writing program I use for my business that is a bear to re-install and get all the files in their proper place. Have begun pulling hair out. Not much left. Time running out. Help!.......Anyb... Read more

I recently updated my computer to Windows 10 which worked fine. Today, I started to do some programming in Java which I do a lot. I noticed that when I ran my java application, or ANY java application, within a few seconds it would say "Java SE Binary has stopped working". I already updated my Java to the newest version, and restarted my PC but to no avail. Any idea on how to fix this?

Hello to all on this forum,

Some time ago I restored system and after doing that some of the programs, like Autocad, Livemail, and some other .exe do not launch. It's just said 'program has stopped working and will be closed'.

If it's about Live Mail, I tried almost everyghing - sfc /scannow, I tried repairing it, uninstalling, deleting the file where the accounts are stored and so on. I searched internet over three days and tried all given solutions but none of them worked and since then I've started to think that this might not be the problem of Live Mail itself but rather a system problem.

My question is, is it worth trying to repair it in some way that only You guys might know or it's better to reinstall windows using this upgrade option - as far as I know all programs should stay as they are, correct me if I'm wrong, it's important to me. I've got so many graphic programs that I'd rather avoid reinstalling anything.

Thanks for all help!

I just recently got some amazing advice here on there forums and solved some strange problems with my computer.

however, just recently, I've noticed several programs that rely on an internet connection (such as iTunes store and sometimes AIM, nothing illegal) suddenly stopped working.

The iTunes music store simply never connects, AIM sometimes does but mostly doesn't, but the weird part is all the while my internet browser works just fine and at pretty fast speeds. So i'm fairly certain the internet connection is not the culprit, seeing how Firefox works like a dream but some other programs don't.

Also, sometimes both IE and Firefox won't be able to download things online. some things work fine, large files and small, but other items simply cause the searching indicator thing in the corner spin forever with no result, even after several attempts and even restarting my computer and waiting for a while.

I also tried disabling my firewall (though extremely briefly, just to test the problem) thinking maybe some things were just being blocked all of a sudden, but the same things keeps happening. I even tried reinstalling iTunes, IE, and Firefox but the problem persists. it's obviously not a huge urgent problem, but very annoying all the same, especially since not only am I very into media but I make almost all my purchases and downloads online because it's easier, cheaper, and in greater supply than in any local store.

might be there'... Read more

I have had windows 7 for a few months now and have had problems that I could call support for. Now that I can no longer get support, I have 2 programs that have stopped working. "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." yeah, like that will happen.
I have already deleted both programs and reinstalled one. and I still get the same error. Can someone please help me or should I just pay the $$$ to get windows help.

I recently got CA Internet Security free with a purchase on Tigerdirect, so I installed it. I didn't like it, so I uninstalled it and went back to AVG Free. Well, now a bunch of programs will not work properly.

MSN Messenger - Opens normally, but can not sign in. It shows an error and if you click "Troubleshoot" it freezes.

Yahoo! Messenger - Opens normally, but can not sign in either.

Internet Explorer - Opens normally, but can not load any site; just a blank screen, until I hit stop. Sometimes freezes in Internet Options menu.

Outlook 2002 - Can send and receive e-mail fine, but sometimes freezes when doing things like adding an account.

WS_FTP - Can access my website and allows me to edit things on the website, but will not let me send things to the website. Gives me an error.

Winamp - Loads after opening it twice, freezes randomly, etc. I uninstalled this.

Windows Media Player 7 - Freezes when first opening. I just use Classic Media Player now.

I know the internet works fine, because I currently use SeaMonkey for my browsing/e-mail and AIM for my instant messaging. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do to fix this? btw, I'm using Windows 2000.

Answer:Solved: Programs just stopped working

It might not have anything to do with the CA Internet Security software, but it was around that time everything started acting this way. Any tips to get IE, and any of the other programs, to work would be much appreciated. Anyone?

Problems: some programs cannot be run, stopped working as soon as it is opened
I came to recognize my problem when McAfee pops up to check database update, but when I click "Check Now" it stopped working. After that I tried numerous times after a few restart tries.
Even in my attempt to uninstall McAfee, the McAfee host UI has stopped working.

Then I came to realise that its not McAfee's thing, other programs are also affected namely Yahoo Messenger, Skype (MSN), Microsoft Windows Repair Disc.
(Browsers are working fine)

First, the data. You could remove your hard drive, and install it in a second working computer as a slave. Then you can go into the slave hard drive and copy your files.

You may consider either posting a hjt log in the HJT forum here at BC, or wiping out the data on your hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Let us know which way you want to go and we can give you specific instructions on how to proceed.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

How many anti-virus applications are you using?

May I suggest you delete the lot and use Microsoft Security Essentails instead?

You can download it here and it's free: Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Having more than one A/V application running can impact on how your computer performs and it is not good practice to run more than one on your computer.

Please help, I'm not a proficient computer user and I've somehow got this wretched HTTPS Tidserv Request 2 rootkit. I run a small business and this is SUCH a pain losing time and money here.First alerted 2 days ago by Norton Internet Security persistent pop-up warnings about intrusion attempts by various attacking computers and URL's, googled the names,,,, and found your (wonderful) site putting the horrible significance on the information.I've read all the instructions, backed the valuables up before downloading DeFogger, DDS and GMER and followed the step-by-step instructions religiously. After starting GMER scan, the window showed quite a list but after only 1 minutes or so just disappeared, leaving just the GMER folder with the .exe icon in. Almost immediately after, Internet Explorer and Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Word (which were all open) stopped responding. Had to ctrl, alt, delete to shut them down.Question - before I run GMER again, is it coincidence that the scan just seemed to stop itself and IE etc. crashed in which case it's safe to go ahead, or does the rootkit know what I'm doing and therefore scuppering the scan?Paranoid? Maybe a little! Unfortunately I don't know enough about what I'm doing here though to confidently retry without a little reassurance from the experts please. The DDS and Attach text files are saved to my desktop if they... Read more
