Preferred Solution: Cheap GPU for 3440x1440 monitor?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does anyone have a clue if it is possible to run an ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor via P50 HDMI port.

I have dual graphics - AMD RADEON R9 M265x and INTEL HD 4600. Not sure which one does the HDMI output on the p50-b. I think the Radeon has 2gb DDR5 if this is important.

I am not planing on playing games, I would like the wide screen for productivity - word, spreadsheets, drawings, charts, diagrams etc. - multitasking.

When I connect my Thinkpad P50 to my external monitor (Samsung C34F741) directly using the mini Diplayport (connector on the side of the laptop) everything works fine. The resolution 3440x1440 @ 100 Hz and sound on the monitor speakers all work flawlessly. However, when I connect the same external monitor to the Displayport of the Lenovo Workstation Dock (using the same cable), the video works fine (same resolution and refresh rate as above), but the audio on the monitor speakers lags behind the video. The lag is at first barely noticable but increases as time passes, eventually getting out of sync a few seconds. I have the latest nVidia drivers and the latest Workstation Dock firmware installed. I am suspecting the external Displayport on the docking station is not capable of driving the high resolution at such a high refresh rate. Is there indeed a difference is specs between the laptop's Diplayport and the Docking station's Displayport? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I have a new hardware:

Dell XPS13 (9360) with Thunderbolt 3
Dell U3417W 34" monitor  (3440x1440 px)

I have prepared everything on my table because I had no idea that new Dell only has Thunderbolt 3 and no mini display port. I was kind of surprised (in a bad way) that I will need another reduction.
The problem is that I can only input display port, mini display port and HDMI into the new Dell U3417W monitor. I am not sure how much resolution I can squeeze from HDMI, so what is left are those display ports.
Should I buy USB-C -> Display port cable like for e.g. Startech USB Type-C to Displayport cable, 1m (CDP2DPMM1MB) which could possibly do the job? Or perhaps even some Thunderbolt 3 cable?
I need to have 3440x1440 px @ 60 Hz where some of those cables support only @30 Hz and they do not explicitly state that 3440x1440px resolution is supported.
I would rather avoid those bugged Dell docking stations where the whole internet (e.g. Amazon) is snowed by users complaints.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I am glad to see someone not jumping on the LCD bandwagon. LCD's are really only good if you need to conserve space on your desk. The picture quality kinda sucks. But CRT's put out like a 3x better picture and are cheaper.............

I will be buying from tiger direct, because i have 50 bucks off my next purchase there. I am leaning toward the viewsonic, because of the higher resolution, and also it has a 30 dollar rebate, but the acer is a little bigger, and my friend has one, so i know the picture is pretty good. Any suggestions would be great, and thanks in advanced.

So i am wondering if anyone knows of any very cheap monitors that use LED backlights instead.

Hi,A colleague's daughter has her own PC but the monitor has gone on it. She wants to replace it with a TFT - 15" will do.I looked around and they seem to be around 80 pounds if you want a new one. I was wondering if she is better off getting a very very low value new PC that includes one, as I know there have been some good deals around. What is the cheapest new PC around? At a tesco near you? Dell? Or elsewhere. If she could get one for say 299 with a flat screen I think she might consider it, it doesn't need to be high spec at all as it is just for visiting web sites and using some kids cd roms.

Hi,

Looking at buying this monitor;

has anyone had experience with this brand or this monitor, price is very cheap but specs are very good so i'm slightly dubious about buying. The reviews on the website are entusiastic but not particularly professional. I play games a lot, and use photoshop so I need a pretty good monitor. In regards to this will games play perfectly at 1280 x 1024 despite it being widescreen.

A friend suggested that Samsung maybe a better choice.

The monitor on my system is playing up, it's a Medion 15" TFT, It's still under warranty and I've spoken to them and it looks like it'll need to go in. They reckon up to 28 days to fix it or replace it, there'll be an uprising in this house if we've got no PC for a month. So I was going to look in the local free paper for one for about 15-20 or so, e-bay haven't got any in my area p&p is prohibitive. Can a normal portable TV be used? If so how? TR

Hello from the old granny! Would appreciate any advice on picking a decent monitor as my old crt has died and having to use a borrowed one right now but can't keep it much longer.

Don't have any ideal what would be a good monitor especially as I have limited funds.....175 or under. Would like to have a 19 or 22 inch flat screen. I understand ms should be under 12, lookd at several on line that are quoted as being 5ms, (not sure what that means) is that considered good?

I live in the country and don't have a lot of stores to pick from other then Wal Mart!!! Would order from on line but don't know who would be best to order from.

My little computer is a Samsung Shuttle X, about 5 years old, (still working great) if that is important to know and running XP.

Answer:Help Me Pick A Decent Monitor.....Cheap!!

Okay, let's see what we can find. I, like alot of us here, deal with Newegg.com, there dependable and they do stand behind what they sell. Let's start with these monitors. These are 20" monitors. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020 1309821318&name=20" Some are pretty expensive, but as you scroll down you'll find some in your price range. Okay, here's the 19" http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020 1309821317&name=19" And, just for the heck of it, here's the 22" http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010190020 1309822582&name=22" A number of the 22s are within the price range you mentioned. So, does that help any?? Like I said, Newegg is a good company and I noticed that some of those monitors have free shipping included.

Hi, I want to buy Samsung's 34" ultra-wide curved screen monitor (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/monitors/LS34E790CNS/ZA) and use it on my ThinkPad T440p, which uses Intel HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M. Intel's video card can supposedly handle 3840x2160 via DisplayPort, but on https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Specs-Explained-Video-Card-463/#DisplayPort it says that: "So while companies like AMD and NVIDIA like to say that their DisplayPorts support resolution up to 4096x2160, the actual resolution that you can currently achieve on a single display is 2560x1600 @ 60Hz." T440p has a mini DisplayPort - will it be able to handle the 3440x1440 resolution from Samsung? Any help would be much appreciated!  Thanks

Answer:34" Ultra-wide (3440x1440) on ThinkPad T440p - will it work?

I just want to confirm that the monitor works perfectly on T440p. The DisplayPort is thankfully in newest standard (1.2), so the monitor can run at 60Hz refresh rate (if on older DP or HDMI, it would only run at 50Hz). However, there are some issues if I use both monitors at the same time. When they go to sleep and I wake them up again the windows are all messed up. I'm sure that this is a driver issue, but I hope that it will be sorted out soon.

Hello, I am using the HP advanced wireless dockingstation with an Elite X2 1012 G1. The highest resolution I seem to be able to display on an external monitor seems to be 2560x1440. Is that the maximum possible? I have a wide Monitor with 3440x1440 pixels. Using the thunderbolt 3 dock, the Elite X2 is able to drive that monitor but not with the wireless dock. Best case I am trying to connect this 3440x1440 and an HD TV with 1920x1080 at the same time. Should that be possible? Thanks,Dirk

I picked up a Samsung SyncMaster 930b at a GoodWill near my home, it seemed in great condition when I picked it up, plugged it in at the store, turned right on, Digital popped up in the corner, I thought everything was fine.
Got home, hooked it up to my laptop through a DVI-HDMI cable, the desktop popped up, for about a second, then the screen went black. Now I can only get anything to display when I press the button to switch between Analog and Digital, it will pop up for a second when it switches to digital but then it shuts off again.
I even tried it on an raspberry pi I have and the same thing happened. Unfortunately though I dont have a VGA cable to see if maybe its just the DVI connection. Any advice from anyone or has anyone experienced this before and is it fixable?

Answer:Picked up a cheap monitor, hoping for an easy fix

Some desktop video cards are packaged with dvi to vga adaptor.
see if you have one to test vga video connection.

also, I think not all video connections are supported by a dvi-hdmi adaptor (?).
check laptop manual if such connection is supported.

Hi, I urgently need to get a program that can, for example, use my laptop as a monitor. I know their is no easy hardware solution for this, but their are programs like MaxiVista, which can use other computers as a screen. I need to bring my desktop with me this long weekend when I visit a friend. The problem is, I'm taking the train, and the monitor I currently use is a CRT so its huge! And very breakable. So my plan was to setup a monitor sharing tool on the my desktop, configure it for my laptop, then just boot it using the LCD in the laptop. So any good free or cheap programs out their to achieve this? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Damn! It just hit me that whatever software uses networking to share the monitor, needs to be started from within windows xp, as it would have to be amazing to be started along with windows. Anyways, I might be able to figure somthing out. So I'm still open to suggestions.

Actually for what he plans to use it for (internet, email, work processing) and his budget, I doubt I can build it for less than the latest Dell or similar "bargain". Is there a motherboard manufacturer somewhere between the good ones I usually use like ASUS or Abit and the other end of the spectrum like PC Chips?

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

This started working fine when I installed the video drivers below: Display (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M / Quadro FX 570M) driver for Windows Vista 64-bit - ThinkPadhttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67939  It looks like I had installed the wrong video drivers (32-bit)  previously. Now fn+F7 works fine and I am able to extend my desktop to mulple monitors (dual-monitor).

Hi I wanted to use my CRT TV as a second monitor and connected it to my Computer using an 'S' connector.I have an NVIDIA 5500 Card with TV Out. so I ran the Cable from this to my TV.I then Selected Clone mode to get the same picture on my Monitor and my TV the problem is while my Monitor works fine and displays in color my TV only displays in Black and White. So how do I get my TV to display in Color when connected to my Computer.Note: The TV works fine for normal TV reception its just that it won't display in Color when using it as an additional Monitor.

Answer:Dual Monitor Problem TV+Monitor (Clone mode) Monitor (OK) TV (No Color)

You will alway struggle with a cathode screen. You need to really have a T.V that has a VGA port. Which generally means spending money. My tv is a Sony Bravia with a VGA port and it works perfect but I had to spend the money to get it.

Hi folks. New here.  Sorry if this has  been asked/answered, but I searched and didn't find it. My company got me this great new W500 laptop.  Came with minidock and external monitor. I have the monitor plugged into the minidock, and have it to the right of the laptop. Laptop is monitor #2, and external LCD display is #2.  works great.  UNTIL.... If I lock the console, and fold the laptop monitor closed (to have it power off - i.e. at lunch break, etc...) When I come back, the external monitor is now monitor #1 (has the windows task bar, Start menu, etc...) and it thinks the laptop monitor is monitor #2.  I can't figure out how to switch them back without rebooting.  It's very frustrating, b/c the 'sides' are swapped too.  Meaning the external LCD display which is physically to the right, is "on the left" as far as Windows is concerned, so if I drag the mouse off-screen to the right of the external display, it arrives on the left side of the laptop (which is physically to the left). Is there a simple solution to this?  I can't live with having to reboot every time I lock my monitor. I'm using Windows XP if that makes a difference.

Answer:Dual Monitor issue. Lock console & external monitor becomes monitor #1

more information... It's the 'advanced minidock' with keys. The monitor is connected via the DVI port, not the plain old VGA port.

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Answer:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/ads/2010/10/01/50082/Intel-Core-i3-Processor-530

My friend said it is bad because of the fact that it has integrated gpu. I plan to get a hd 5750 video card for my computer.

He gave an argument like this
it's a 3GHz processor, if 800MHz is dedicated for the integrated GPU
then that processor now becomes a 2.2GHz processor
even if you put a video card in
that processing power has been allocated to serve as a GPU
and not as a CPU
is this true?

Question: Cheap HDD

Anyone know where online i could get a cheap hard drive for old computer.Any speed,max.5GB.No computer fairs in my area.

Answer:Cheap HDD

I wanted a 10GB max hard drive for an old computer and eventually managed to get hold of an 8GB second-hand one.You may be able to get hold of one from a local computer shop, which does repairs and upgrades. That's where I got mine and was given a 3 month warranty with it too! It's still running after 6 months without problems. If you buy privately, you may find, like I did, that the hard drive may fail very quickly (10 minutes to be precise) - in my case, the person I purchased it from refused to refund me the money. A case of buyer beware.Bodi

I am thinking of upgrading my desktop's memory configuration from 512 MB to 768 MB, with an extra stick of RAM I got from a computer with a fried motherboard. RAM Specs match so there are no compatibility issues

is it most likely that this RAM is damaged or will damage my desktop's motherboard? is this wise?

Answer:Cheap Way to Get RAM

First of all just because the specs are the same does not mean it is going to work. The days of being able to throw in just about any ram that would fit and have it work are long gone.

For this reason, ram mfg have compatibility checkers on their web sites. You input your motherboard and it will show you compatible ram chips.

Next is the ram damaged? The only way you are going to find out is to install the ram in a known working system and see.

Answer:Cheap(er) SSD's on the way

Probably first step towards making SSDs more mainstream devices. However, there is a caveat in making such buying decisions and i.e. I think you shall buy when you actually need that damn piece of hardware instead of waiting and timing your decision according to market.

Now, having said that defining 'need' is difficult, but usually our needs are driven by size of our wallet

Question: What (cheap) PDA?

I've been looking around Ebay at PDAs. I don't need anything amazingly excellent; in fact even something older with a black & white screen would (probably) do.Basically I need it to have some sort of database application, preferably compatible with Microsoft Access (versions 97 to 2003 - I'm not bothered because 2003 saves in 97 format). This does need to be able to at least READ the database, although writing to it is maybe preferable. The idea is this: I have a peanut allergy and if I can store all of the various lists on the PDA it would make food shopping a bit easier - anything I don't know about can't always be purchased until checked on the lists on paper/the internet at home. A database I think is probably the best solution, especially if the PDA software allows loading queries/forms in Access (if it exists).Sorry if this posting is a bit long, but I don't know a lot about PDAs - all I know is that whatever I get will have to be very cheap; I'm talking a maximum of 30 second hand on Ebay.I've seen a few Psion series 3 and 5 ones, but whether these would be suitable I don't know. I have half of one somewhere, but it doesn't work any more because the hinge has broken off and the screen won't come on. I have used this and I don't know whether it would be compatible with anything modern, even Access 97.Thanks in advance,Gaz

Folks,

We are planning on moving our IP PBX from a dedicated bare metal box to a virtualized environment. We have a PRI trunk that is currently handled by a PCI PRI card. The new box will not have room for an addon so I need to find an external version of the PCI card...

All I am finding are $1K+ digium boxes which are way out of our budget.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Cliffs: need an external PRI -> SIP gateway/converter.

Answer:Cheap PRI to SIP box

well $1000 is about right for anything that interfaces with a PRI...

i pay $815 for the single port sangomas we use...

do you have the ability to passthrough USB? there is the xorcom astribank which i've heard good things about...

also sangoma makes the vega, a PRI network gateway... both are going to be ~$1k....

otherwise i've heard of people figuring out how to repurpose old cisco gear w/ T1 cards but that's way over my head... and compared to our simple PCI cards wayyyy more complicated... but seems to be a really cheap way to do it...
