Preferred Solution: Changing open with default program to unknown application.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Changing open with default program to unknown application.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. You may have to restart your computer after completing the above steps.

You posted this in the wrong section by the way.

Hello everyone, before you guys beat me up, I'm well aware of this post
'Changing open with default program to unknown application' previously posted in this forum.
I followed the instructions posted by tacoman359 (Thank you Tacoman359) but it didn't work. I even restarted my pc and the .cfg is still being associated with notepad.
My os is vista; and I have exactly the same problem and the same reasons as jianming (the first person to post this issue). I even tried a few cmd assoc scripts and still, .cfg "opens with" notepad is still there. I have also tried to disaccoate .cfg from notepad in the other regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by removing the value data.
Is there anything else I can do to get the default reset back to unkown application?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have been using Picasa to automatically import photos from my digital camera. I would prefer that not to happen anymore. I have stopped Picasa Media Detector from starting on startup but Picasa still opens automatically when I insert my cable from my camera to the my desktop (xp home).
What can I do to stop Picasa from behaving this way and having the default Windows program to import my photos?
Thank you for looking.

Answer:Changing the default photo program from Picasa to Windows default

If you get a mass storage drive letter when you connect your camera you can try connecting the camera so the drive letter is present, then right click on the drive and choose properties and in properties select the autoplay tab and specifically select an action for the type of files present such as open folder for viewing in windows explorer or whatever else is available.

If that doesn't work let us know, maybe media detector is running as a service and that needs to be shut down or something.

Hi

I am a big fan of user account controls in Vista and Win7.

I would like to know how I can stop any and all newly installed programs from being able to change or affect my default programs.

I build and maintain computers and once I have installed and set up a new system I don't want any program to change my default programs. Not even win media player or Internet explorer if they update themselves.

Does that make sense.

I use GOM as the default media player and firefox as the default browser. But sometimes if there is a system update for media player, internet explorer or even iTunes and quicktime these programs sometimes after the update change my default programs.
Once I have finalized my install and set up my preferences how can I lock down the default programs permanently?

Any help is apreciated.

I searched the site for a while and couldn't find an answer.... so I decided to post my question... sorry if this has been asked before.

Somehow every .IFO file on my computer (using XP) has been set to open with notepad as the default.... these files were from movies I've backed up to my computer, and when I burn the movies to a disc they burn properly, but then they won't read correctly when played on the dvd player. At first I thought it was just the type of discs I was using.. but later realized that the problem never occurred before I noticed all the .IFO files as default set to open with notepad.

What I need to know is how to set the properties of my .IFO files to read as Unknown application instead of Notepad.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help.

Running Windows XP. Kids have been on the computer and downloaded something called "bear share". Might be a coincidence but since then I've had a message "An unknown application is trying to change your default search engine" on startin IE. If I click OK it goes but pings up again two seconds later. If I click the X it goes away for good.

I'd like to get rid of it. I've run C Cleaner, AVG, and Stopzilla but it still happens.

I'd be grateful for some help.

Hi,WinXP Home, sp2.I've been looking in my C:\Program Files and i've come across 2 'application' icons that i've not noticed before. One is called 'Delete.exe' (size 40kb) and the other is called 'SetAttrib.exe' (size 44kb), both created 22/2/2006. One says modified 30th Nov 2004, the laptop wasn't even built then. The other says modified 21st Jan 2005. There's no information for either in the 'summary' tab. I've done a full scan with Norton, Ad-Aware SE, A-Squared and Ewido and everythings coming up clean. Has anyone any idea what these application icons could be please.Cheers Chris.

Answer:Changing program default for JPeg files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

I assume you want them to open in Windows Photo Gallery as your default viewer.

Right click on a image (the file type) you want to change ...
choose Open With >> Choose Default Program >> and browse to find Windows Photo Gallery.

Personally ..
I've replaced WPG with freeware Irfanvew as my default Viewer and Basic Image Editor.

In Irfanview's options .. You can tell it to be the default for all Images.
You can also tell Irfanview to make APE 5 the "extended editor"

Irfanview and Photoshop are the only two Image programs I use.
They play together very well.

I'm having trouble with the incredibly simple task of changing a default program association. Following the very clear steps listed on this forum for at least 2 different procedures fail in my case. I could use some help.

Whether starting with the "Associate ..." function in the control panel or a right click "Open With" on a file I do a "Browse" to get to the old program in the old director and select it. But the file association is not changed - it still shows the new program's icon and still accesses the new program.

Background: I installed a demo of a new version of some software. The installation changed the program associated with the .sib file extension - same program (Sibelius.exe) but a different path.

Is the same program / different path messing me up, or is something else going on?

Answer:Trouble changing default program association

Doing a System Restore to before you installed the program should fix this.

Hi,

Everytime I try and change the default program for an extension to something else, its icon gets messed up.

For example,

I am using WinCDEmu ( WinCDEmu - A free CD/DVD emulator for Win32 and Win64 ), and want to mount an .mdf, but unfortunately, the .mdf has not been automatically associated, so I manually do it in Default Program. But when I am done, the icon for the file gets messed up and looks like this:

The icon, should look like this though:

What can I do to fix the icon issue?

Thanks,
Slasher

Answer:Changing default program for extension messes up the icon

It happens . The file will take load of the file icon of the default program associated . If you shift from WMP to VLC as your default music player, it will also happen .

There is no way to get back unless you get back to default default application .

Anyway, it's not an issue . It's natural .

I'm running Windows 7 on an HP laptop. I'm in the process of changing my email address to a Hotmail address (using Outlook Email). Until now I have been using a particular email client program, Fort? Agent, and the browser (IE10) is currently set up to launch Fort? Agent as my default email program if I click an email link on a web page.

So I'm trying to stop the browser from automatically launching Fort? Agent in this scenario, but I find the options within Control Panel confusing. There are also check boxes headed 'Enable access to this program' against the latter two option buttons. Both of these are currently set to 'Yes' (i.e. ticked).

I have a problem with Sysprep changing the default program for .mov files (and other Apple files) from Quicktime or VLC to Windows Media Player.

I'm looking for a way to change these settings back after Sysprep is complete using either a .reg file or a VBS script. (I've tried using an AutoIT script before to navigate through menus and it didn't work right.)

I've used ProcessMonitor to watch what keys and values are changed when I reclaim those files for VLC. The only values I see changed are in:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Media\VLC\Capabilities\FileAssociations]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts]

I merge these key branches back into the registry with a regedit /s command, but the file associations aren't reset. Is there someplace I'm missing?

Hi,

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Open Office is the default application

You can re-assign documents to a different program using two methods:

1. Control Panel, Default Programs, Set Associations. Select the file extension from the list e.g. .doc and select 'Change Program' and change it to Open Office.

2. Open Explorer, go to your Documents folder, right click a document file and select 'Open With' and then select 'Choose default program' and select the program you wish to open it with and tick the box 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.

You need to repeat the above steps for other file type such as .xls, .ppt, .mdb and so on.

Hey guys,

My PC is currently partitioned, my OS is installed on a 30gb partition to just host the OS, and the rest of my disk is the D partition. Unfortunately I do not know of a way to make Vista think that my "My Documents" folder / area would be on a different disk, so I manually made my own and use it on the other partition.

One of the things I find super annoying is whenever I go to open a file, for example try to attach something to an email, it by default goes to the My Documents area on the C Drive. Is there a way to change the path that it goes to first when opening / attaching files like that?

Thanks!

Answer:Changing default folder open path?

Hello Punkrulz,

This tutorial below can help show you how to change the default location of your C:\Users\(user name)\Doucments folder to open from the D: partition location instead. However, be sure to read the warning box at the top of the tutorial about doing this with the Documents folder if you have programs that save files to this location.

Windows refuses to change the version application called upon with default program.

I have 2 versions of 3ds max (2010 and 2015) on my system. I need both for different utilities (some that work in 2010 do not work in 2015, and vice versa).

I tried to change the default left click open program to 3ds max 2015.

However, Windows refuses to acknowledge this and insists on using 3ds Max 2010's 3dsmax.exe instead.

I am using the correct path to the launcher in the 2015 version's folder, I made sure of this at least 15 times.

I have gone through regedit tutorials, even downloaded a utility called openwithview, and tried working with the UI interface for 'open with' for hours but to no avail. Why is windows so insistent on using 3dsmax.exe from the 2010 version even when explicitly told to use the 2015 version? What is causing it to fight so hard with me? How can I change this behavior?

On my home computer I decided to change which player opens my mkv files. I went to Control Panel-->Default Programs-->Associate a file type or protocol with a program and when I clicked on a file type and then on 'Change Program' the hour glass went on as if it wad doing its job but then nothing happened. I tried it a 2nd time and still nothing. I rebooted and still nothing. OK off I go to my sister's PC. This time wanting to view my Nikon NEF files there I did the file association with XN view itself but it still opened it the windows default media viewer. Off I went to the Control Panel and do it from there and again the same thing. Since I had used this method to associate files before about a year ago and it worked fine I am now thinking that the Windows updates since then did something to make this no longer work. it is after all using 2 different computers and 2 different types of files which makes me think my deduction is correct. Does anyone have info regarding this and why it isn't working? and what could be done about it? Thanks

Answer:changing which default program opens a file no longer works

Dear pintree3,

you can use very simple trick to change the default programs which well work on all computers by following this steps:

1. Right click on the file. you need to change the default opening format program.
2. Select " Open with..."

Under [Default Programs] "Set your default programs"
The dialog allow you to ONLY set default settings, that is
you cannot UNCHECK an option once the program is set as default.
So HOW can we edit/change a selection in the "Select associations for a program" dialog?
And, yes, I am Administrator for the account.

I have tried windows restore - that wont work
I have tried changing from 32 bit to 16 bit and back that wont work either.

It has nothing to do with resolution. I am attaching a snapshot of what i mean.

Please help me restore them back or let me know if this is due to a virus or trojan.

I have the default program (bluevoda.exe) set to open .bvp files. When I click on a .bvp file it will open the program to a blank page. It will not open the page though. I must go thru the File - Open - and then find the file I want to open.
In XP, it would open the page but Windows 7 does not.
Have I overlooked something in setting the default program? How can I get the page to open IN the program and not just open the program?
Thanks

Answer:Can't open page in Default program

Hey texnpa,

Welcome to 7 Forums!

You probably want to run this program in compatibility mode. Find the .exe program file (C:\Program Files\...)
Then you will want to right click, and choose compatibility tab.
Then you can choose to run as Windows XP.

Follow this tutorial if you need any further help or guidance: Compatibility Mode

Hey guys. I've got a .hlp file that I want to open, but I guess it was made with an older version of Windows in mind. If I double click to open it I get what you see in my first attachment. I can open it with a version I downloaded from Microsoft's site (C:\Windows\winhlp32.exe). However, the "Always Open With" box is greyed out. I've tried going in through the Control Panel but it does the same thing. I don't mind messing with the registry if that's the only fix, but I really would like to get this working right every time without having to manually select it. Thanks for any help you can give!

Answer:Can't set default program to open .hlp files

I would think if you were able to change it, then other help files would not open. Maybe it is greyed out for that reason.

i recently installed open office 2.3 and was wandering if i should make this the default program like it wanted on installation and what exactly would that mean?? the only other programs i have in this direction are word and notepad. thanks for your time and patience.

Answer:open office as default program ?

Making it you default will only case it to be used if you open a document by double clicking on it rather than opening it from within, say, Word. You will still be able to use whichever program you like to produce your document by opening the program of your choice. Personally I have MS Works (Word, etc.) as my default but also have Open Office installed as it suits my needs. I can open either by clicking on its icon but if I open any document sent it will open in Word.

I recently installed Nero software for burning DVD's and aparently I gave the software permission to open all icons under Nero instead of where they opened from before. When I go to my icon folder to choose an icon, instead of seeing all of the icons I have placed, there, all I see is about 100 Nero icons. I could uninstall Nero and I suppose that would correct the problem, but maybe I won't have to if I can find out how they were opened before.

Also, when I try to open another application from my desktop icons or from my start up menu, it thinks and thinks and never opens. I can still work on the internet or anything that I may have open already. And the task manager does not list that those programs are running or trying to open.

I have PC tools Spyware Doctor also.

Is there a way to make Open Office the default program over Microsoft Office? Win XP

Answer:making open office the default program

Have you checked the program configuration, there should be an option to accociate it with open office applications, however dont understand why you would want to do this if microsoft office is already on the pc. . If that does not work, pick an office file, then right click it and click open with. A dialog should appear, in which you should be able to set the respective open office program to open that type of file. To make this permanent just check the box that says somthing along the lines of always using the selected application to open this type of file.

Hello,
I am having an issue with .msg files not opening with the default program, Outlook. They are opening in a new tab and it is just a bunch of gibberish from the email header. Does anyone know how to force IE to open the .msg files in Outlook? They open fine
in Chrome and Firefox.
Thanks for your help!

Answer:.msg files open in new tab or window, not with the default program

Hi,
First I suggest we take a try in IE with no-addons.
Follow the steps below:
1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (with no add-ons)

2. Press Shift, then right click Internet Explorer icon on taskbar, select run as administrator;
Please also take a verify that if the outlook is set to the default open program of .msg files:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs, find the .msg file and take a look.
Then we may try to use process monitor to track the root cause of this issue:
The download link here:

And here is
a blog talking about how to use it:

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I got my computer with a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office 2010 installed on it. Once the trial ran out, I bought the product, but in doing so installed a separate application, leaving two Microsoft Office installations, one with an unregistered product key and one registered (yes, I know I was stupid). I uninstalled the old version, leaving no default program to open documents with. I tried to track down the EXEs for each program, no dice. When I looked at the start menu shortcuts, I found that each Microsoft Office program lead to one application, called CVH.exe. Setting that as the default program didn't work. How can I make it so that I can double-click on a pptx or docx file and run the corresponding application?

Answer:Default program to open microsoft office documents

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. First, you did nothing stupid. The program should have resolved that issue for you. You may want to complain nto MS about this. Did you receive a DVD or was it a download? If the new Office you got is on DVD, install it again after removing both of the other installs. When you um-install Office it does not destroy user documents.Look in the list of entries in the  'Program Files' directory and see if there is two installations of MS Office. If you ind the right one, send it to the desktop as a shortcut. (Right Click) That will put a good shortcut on the desktop. Also, go into the place where you  can remove programs. See if two versions of MS Office are installed. Remove the bad one.

whenever i right click on a file and go to 'open with' and click on 'choose default program', i get get the following error below:

now i am an experienced user and i am in the IT field but for the life of me i cant figure this one out. the following are some examples of file types, avi, jpeg, mpeg, txt, etc...
these files do indeed open fine with the program i have set as the default program for these files. they are also properly associated in the default programs option in vista. I sometimes for one reason or another want to open a file with a different program which is why i go to 'open with' but i dont want to have to continue to keep changing my default programs to open files.
now i have gone in the registry and manually added some of the programs to the open with context menu for some of the file extensions but i dont want to do this for all of them.
i suspect that there is some corrupt/missing dll file or reg key some where but i have yet to track it down.
everything else runs fine. vista runs great except for this 1 problem. if anyone knows a fix or even the location of the dll/reg key/file that may be corrupt then i would greatly appreciate it.
i do have backups that i can use to restore the corrupt/missing files if needed.

Hello pritpalspall, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file for the listed jpg option in the tutorial below to restore it's default association and registry entries that should also restore the default Open with entries as well.

Afterwards, you'll need to set Windows Photo Viewer back as the default program though since the default is the modern Photos app.

After an update days ago many configurations were changed , including the default application to open pdf files ,
it was changed to open with Microsoft Edge.
I changed it to open with my preference , Adobe Reader.
However It happens that every day I boot the system pdfs are set to open with Edge once again.
Is there any other way than ?Choose default apps by file type? or ?right click the file > choose open with > choose other application? to change the file association ?

ps.: the same happens with files such mp4 , wma and .flac to be opened with Groove
I think this is a dirty trick on behalf of MIcrosoft to favor Edge and Groove

Answer:Every time I boot the system “Edge” is default program to open pdfs

If you're trying to open PDFs from within Edge, then Edge will automatically open them, regardless of what your system default setting is. AFAIK, that doesn't change with the Anniversary Update. Bad Microsoft, bad boy!

However, once you've chosen "Default apps by file type" or other system settings -- AND you haven't been synching your MS account with other devices -- then, opening a PDF file in File Explorer, IE, or any other program will open it in Adobe Reader (or Reader DC, as the case may be).

Festive New Year Greetings all - May you have a fine 2009!

I am fighting a bizarre "driveby" infection - a bad one - sets up multiple windows claiming to be XP "found infection - offers to clean it 4 u" puts a copy of the MS yellow shield in your starter bar which downloads whole process again.

HOWEVER In trying to find out where it came from, I RC'd and changed the suspect exe file to be opened by default in Notepad.
ONLY that file - did not tick the all option!

But now I can't use any non-default exe files in the System (all try to open in Notepad) and Safe mode wont start. It will start in infected std mode)

How can I remove the default "open with Notepad" problem?

This is both weird and really, really annoying.

Say I set MPV as the default media player. For ALL media types. Then I go into my music library via file explorer and double-click an mp3. It will ask me which app I want to open it in "or keep using MPV".

Even though there's a "Always open using this app" checkbox, it doesn't listen to it and if I shut my computer down or even just log out, it completely resets that open with dialogue... so if I go to double-click an MP3 again, it pops up.

I've double-checked that MPV has control over it's mime types in the control panel (not just the Settings app), and like I said it asks if I want to "keep using MPV". And that's just one example, it does it with my web browser more often than my media player.

Any way to stop this behavior?

Answer:"open with" dialogue for mime types that have a default application

Hi, Just remembered- MS disabled the ability of 3rd party programs setting associations like that from Win 8 on.

So you can go to
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs
and try setting the default there.

You can explore what's happening and perhaps work out a solution by (e.g.):
- Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Associations
and scroll down to (say) mp3 and check the association is set.

(Of course there's also
Settings, search for Default, and go from there).

Again you can check as above.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It is ICO_MYCOMPUTER.ico in explorer.exe in the Icon folder in C:\Windows

You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can open the explorer.exe and import a new icon in its place. I would recommend getting a copy of explorer.exe and putting it on your desktop and then edit it leaving the original untouched until you rename it using the steps below.
Then you'll want to change the explorer.exe do the following.
To properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Here's what I'm trying to do: I want the program I'm developing to be the default program for WMV files, whether launched from the hard drive or streamed from a site.

When activated, my program takes the command line arguments

Dim param As String = Command()

And uses that parameter to activate its video player.

I changed the default action for the WMV file type, for both Open and Play, to: "C:\myprogram.exe" "%L"

This works fine whenever I double click a WMV on the hard drive. The trouble comes when I click on a link to a WMV file, for example www.mypage.com/video.wmv

Instead of opening the file with my program, Windows opens a save file dialog, with an error message at the bottom saying "The file you are opening cannot be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted, or has an incorrect file type." My program is never even activated (I put in extra error catching and message boxes to be certain of this.)

Does a link to a WMV send different parameters than one on the hard drive? Or is there a compatibility issue?

So I've set .html files to open with a text editor called Geany. Recently I've moved the installation directory for Geany from C:\Program Files to E:\Stuff\Programs, because my disc space on C was filling up.

Now, the right click menu for everything that used to open in Geany is broken. See the screenshot "issue1.png". When I click on it, it opens the same "choose program to open with" dialog that you get when you right click > Open with ... > Choose default program, see issue2.png.

Now the problem is that, even if I pick "Always use this program to open the selected type of file", the right-click menu is NOT updated. So I can't use right click - Open with geany, I have to go through the submenus first. And I can't find a way to update the path to the executable

All Google's telling me is how to change it to a different program, or change the file types the program opens. But I need to change the path to the program itself and have it update on the right-click menu.

(Oh, and I don't think Geany itself is at fault, but the problem is me moving it and Windows can't figure out where it went).

So if anyone knows how to update this, through the registry or whatnot, I'd be so happy if you would let me know

Edit - Where did my attachments go?

Answer:"Open With" default program is broken,& I don't know how to change it?

Welcome to Seven forums quat........
Just an FYI, you can't just move the program. You have to uninstall it and then re install it changing the path in the install to E:Program Files\whatever the name of the program is Just moving it has screwed it up for you. So move it back, uninstall and reinstall it.

I was trying to delete all files in the Windows\temp file but was unable to delete fb_492(LCK file). I accidently changed the "openwith"
program from windows shell commor to word pad. Now, I am unable to find the windows shell commor program(I keep getting a "file does not exist" error) to change the "open with" option back to its default. Where can I find this program?

Problem: All .max files on my PC automatically open with Adobe Acrobat (obviously the incorrect program).

If I go to "Open with..." only Adobe Acrobat is available.

Clicking "Browse.." and trying to change the program yields no change.

I haven't tried uninstalling (then reinstalling) either program yet, as I am using both of them frequently for a university assignment.

Here is a screenshot of my "Open With" window, along with other .max files in the background.

I can open .max files from Autodesk 3ds Max, but this is more tedious and time consuming than it sounds, and it isn't really a solution.

Hey everyone,

I have these .bch files I double click to print a series of labels with a program called Loftware Labeling. Usually, after the install of Loftware I have to change the default program on these files to the batch print program Loftware uses to print. So, my dilemma is that I mistakenly clicked the wrong Loftware program to open it and, now its hung on that program. I have tried the "open with" option in the right click menu, I have tried going to tools folder options then file types but it still will not let me change the file type to the batch printer. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Changing "Open With" Program

When you go into the folder options-file types, will it allow you to delete it? I'm thinking if you can do that, then the next time you use it, you should be allowed to Open With and select the proper one.

Hi: my first post and I need help. It seems like I have a very nasty virus and I admit I feel very stupid.

I use Vista 32 bit Service Pack Two.

Basic Problem: I cannot open Word, Disc Clean up, RKILL, Malaware OR ANYTHING. That is because every time I try I keep getting a regular looking dialog box with this exact message:

In Blue Bar accross the top "Open With"
Then in grey area : "Choose the Program you want to open this file"
File iexplore.exe

Now in White area : Internet Explorer Microsoft Corporation (with the regular Microsoft logo)
Other Programs
When I hit the + These programs show up: Adobe, Media Center, itunes, Word, Notepad, Paint, Real Player

Of course none of these work. Then there is BROWS . . . IF NONE OF THESE WORK BROWSE THE WEB
AGAIN, nothing works

Steps I have taken to try to fix.

Run Internet Option to remove browsing. FAIL

Finally got the rkill--and got this message in my notepad :

A small application has appeared in 'C:Windows' called "SYSCFG16", 37 KB in size. Zone Alarm drew my attention to it as it tried to gain access to the internet. The date and time in the properties window seem to show it appeared as I read my emails after I got home from work. Also another two files have appeared, "ir0xya32" and "IR0XYA32.EXE-0843F149" at the same time.I read one of the files using Notepad, and it has some four letter words and other rude comments.I run Win XP Pro, use AVG, and Zone Alarm (Free Version), I did not open any attachments in my email, (any mail with an attachment is directed to a seperate folder in OE), so how do these get into the PC?After problems last weekend I re-installed XP Pro yesterday, and have all the latest updates from MS and AVG.any help /advice appreciated.Stroller

I noticed last night that I have an unknown (to me at least...not unusual) rar.Upon opening there is an application that has downloads from all torrent and file sharing sites but no description whatsoever.
Does anyone know what u996.exe is? The only info I could find on Google is that it is unknown from an unknown publisher and is not necessary but should not be removed if not causing problems. I did download the Sophos version of the vulnerability exploit that has recently been discovered, that MS's version of the patch apparently (according to Grinler's post), can or will remove the icons from your desktop, but I don't recall that as the name of the file. Any answers?
Many thanks in advance,
doc

Answer:unknown application

I found only scant information relating to known files by the name "u966.exe" and what I did find was rather perplexing. There is a project hosted on Google Code called bma-ebook, which appears to have something to do with the nation of Burma (which is called Myanmar and has been under an oppressive military junta for a long time. You may remember some rather severe protests there making the news in 2007. The Myanmarian Junta rather severely limits, filters and monitors the use of the Internet by its citizens.)

Anyhow, near as I can figure, u966.exe (or at least the one I found) is some sort of internet proxy application. That is, a means by which a person in Myanmar could access otherwise prohibited Internet locations and data, such as those relating to anti-government activists and the like.

This is all largely speculation on my part since, as I said, information was scant and perplexing.

Bearing the above in mind, and assuming that you are neither a Burmese dissident nor attempting to proxy your internet usage, I would say that this file (and the other, torrent, files) indicates that your machine may be compromised and being actively used as a dumpster for bittorrent data, the proxy tool being a facilitator to that. For that reason, I am moving your topic to the "Am I Hacked? What Do I Do?" forum so that a system security helper can either rule out a hack attack or help you to remove it.

If I send a word doc as email attachment, from within word 2000 in windows XP, the email has the word doc as an attachment of type "application unknown". If I send word doc from explorer then the email is okay, with a word doc type file as the attachment.
How do I get OE to accept word doc unchanged from word 2000, as a word doc type file.

I am trying to associate kmplayer.exe for these 3 file types - avi,mp4,flv. But whatever i try Window 7 is just refusing to recognize the kmplayer.exe file. I tried to use Default Programs from Control Panel and "assoc" command from command prompt but neither worked.

My KMPlayer is in portable format.

What can i do to make KMPlayer as default player for these file types?

Answer:I can't associate portable program as default program

You cannot make a portable app a default player. Unless you use a 3rd party app like this: Xenon File Manager Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives

Is this how you are associating the files?

Open With - Change Default Program

If so, and that is what is unsuccessful, exactly what happens?

If necessary, you might have a look at this

OpenWith Enhanced
