Non responsive computer

Question: Non responsive computer

Hey everybody this is my first post on Techguy,

The reason Im posting is because My Laptop, which ive had for about a year now, Is an HP dv1000 model if I remember correctly( im in the library right now) and when I went to turn it on saturday afternoon all it did was turn on and stay on a black screen, it did not respond to me pressing any button at all and even my wireless usb mouse didnt get signal. I left it on untill the batter ran out to see if that worked and when I turned it back on it was still the same. I also tried putting a music CD in but that didnt affect it at all. Sorry if this is in the wrong section but Im not sure where the problem is coming from.

Thanks in advance

Mario

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey everyone.

So my PC began acting up and I have a feeling it started when I was looking for video editing software and came across a video editor called "softonicdownloader_for_Windows-live-movie-maker.exe" I'm sure it's a virus or something because problems with my PC began shortly after getting this.
I deleted and uninstalled what I could, went into safe mode and ran the latest updated version of malware bytes. It got 5 infected files that were deleted.

After doing so, I had little success. Here are still the issues with the PC

#1 Desktop and start menu programs won't respond. Can be clicked and the arrow with hourglass will show up, but with no response. Sometimes clicking on them will freeze and lock up. Sometimes they will, but it is only after several manual shut downs. If it does respond (such as clicking on internet explorer), upon closing out the program it will not respond again without a manual shut down.

#2 Boot up is a lot slower, will stay on "Loading your personal setting... Read more

I recently was given some extra RAM by a friend. I wasn't sure if it was the correct size for my PC, so I removed the RAM to check. It indeed was the wrong size, so I replaced the RAM and tossed the extra RAM given to me. I'm sure that the RAM stick was placed back into the computer the right way and is fastened down tightly. When I reconnected everything, the computer turned on fine. But it didn't seem to be recognizing the monitor. Nothing was coming up on the screen and instead of the power light being green, it was orange. So, I checked all my connections and tried again. It still wouldn't do anything. So, I checked all the internal connections as well. I hooked a different monitor up and got the same result. At the moment, my situation is the same. Both power lights on the tower and the monitor are orange instead of green. The computer won't respond to any key commands, nor will it even try to initiate opening Windows XP.Anyone have any ideas on what is wrong? Could I have damaged the RAM when removing it? Any help or ideas would be amazing. I have no idea where to start or what to do. I've got a lot of work saved on my computer that I really can't stand to lose. -Thanks

I have a problem that I've not had before.  My desktop monitor shows the screen that it would show if I had pressed the monitor button that controls the brightness, width, height, etc. of the screen.  The desktop computer will not respond to ANYTHING, including keyboard, mouse, ctrl-alt-delete, etc.  I turned the computer off and re-started it, and still no change.  I turned off the power strip, waited a few minutes, turned everything back on, and still no change.  The only thing working is my internet connection, and I know this because I can use the laptops in the house with the wireless card.  At this point, I can't use the desktop computer or the printer.  Any ideas?

For the past week or so, I have had problems with a computer, and browsers and webpages becoming slow or giving error messages. Trying Microsoft Fix-It the whole system froze. Tried to do an XP repair with nil results, so did a full format. All seemed well until I tried to do updates,Avast Ok, connection to internet Ok, then on reboot, goes as far as the XP motif and then shutdown, with repeating events.
Trying now to boot with the original XP disk, so as to try a repair or reformat, and the computer will not boot from disk. Previously the computer use to ask 'Boot from disk-None' and went into start mode. Now no message.
I hope that I have explained okay. Any help would be appreciated, so as to get the computer working again..

OK, I booted up my computer and then left it for several hours, working on it from my laptop with remote desktop. When I came back to it(never left the house) it was off. I said to myself, thats weird and tried to boot it up and nothing happens except when I flip the switch back and forth on the ps, I get a brief light to flicker next the power button. The lights are all on on the mobo, it just won't boot. I can't get any fans to turn on, no sounds at all.

What do you think my problem is???

Sounds like the power supply might be shot. Incidently flicking it on an off can cause surges which may cause more damage.

Recently had problems with computer flashing multiple windows of emails or advertisements.  Thought the was computer infected so I just reformated the HD and reloaded XP Pro and SP2.  After what appeared to be a successful load, I went to load the two programs, which also appeared to load successfully.  When I went to load the new printer drivers, the computer became non responsive.   It appeared to lock up.  When I went to see if one of the new programs would boot up, I double clicked on the desk top, and mouse pointer/hour-glass would constantly flash at different points on the screen.  So I went to the Start menu and went to 'all programs'.  When I attempted to leave the 'all programs' to select the program I wanted, it would send me back to the dest top, and I couldn't get either of the programs to start.   I tried a different video card but the problem is the same.  I can't get any of the programs to respond.    Appreciate any advice.

Is it a real XP CD that says Microsoft all over it?A good format and reinstall should solve all problems for a while IF the hardware is functioning correctly. Did you format the drive during the installation?

My computer is Non-Responive more then it is working.  If my memory is correct, I went into the Bios et. al. and set all to maximum performance years ago, as I am a firm believer of keeping the computer COOL!.  I am **bleep** retentive in using cans of compressed CO2 to blow out the computer.  In reading I find that if the Cooling fan is part of the problem that I should get a warning that the fan has failed to perform to spec's.  But my interpretations of this gives me the impression that this is tied to the Intel processor, and not looking at the AMD Radeon GPU 6770M.  As a side note I have also been uninstalling programs at the same time. At first I thought I had a failing CPU, and or a clogged Heat Sink.  In looking into the replacement of a CPU Fan, which I mentioned earlier I should have gotten a warning from the Bios that the fan was failing, I found it was the same cost to buy a new fan as it was to buy a Heat Sink with a new fan.  Once I realized what the Heat Sink looked like, I got to thinking the GPU may be the actual problem of the computer becoming unresponsive, which is why I started wondering if I should replace both the Heat Sink and the AMD GPU. Does anyone have any suggestions, advice other then to throw the computer away.  I would rather to spend some monies and at the same time upgrade the computer to higher spec's CPU and GPU and get another year or two out of the computer as this computer ... Hi guys

I posted on this forum about 8 months ago when my hard disk had failed and you guys did a great job in helping me troubleshoot the issue and finding the root of the problem. Sadly I am back with another issue and once again I'm stumped. Everything seems to do just fine for the first 5-10mins after starting my computer but then all of a sudden the computer freezes and the keyboard and mouse become non responsive. I am unable to even start task manager. No blue screen or error message just a completely frozen screen. Im hoping you guys can help me figure out whats causing the problem.

- OS: Vista
- 32 bit
- Vista is the original OS
- Vista was pre-installed on this computer (re-installed by the repair guy when my HDD had crashed)
- the hardware is abt 3 yrs old
- AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.00ghz
- NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
I have a 300W power supply and the motherboard is an Asus M2N68-LA (I looked these up by looking up my computer online) Its an Hp Media center m8327c.

Answer:Computer freezes and becomes non-responsive

I am unable to start the computer as normal now since it usually freezes before I can see my desktop. I have made the zipped file with just the jcgriff file that you have asked for (did this is safe mode). I was unable to make the perfmon file as it says "An error occured while attempting to generate the report" followed by "The system cannot find the path specified". I am going to attempt to start the computer normally and see if I can do the perfmon /report.

Answer:Computer is very slow and non responsive a lot

have run AVG 2010 AntiVirus, MalawareBytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, TrendMicro Housecall, Micrsoft EssentialsUsing more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to conflicts that can arise when they are running in real-time mode simultaneously and issues with Windows resource management. Even when one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves into the operating systems core and using more than one can cause instability, crash your computer, slow performance and waste system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, they both may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior. Each anti-virus may interpret the activity of the other as suspicious behavior and there is a greater chance of them alerting you to a "False Positive". If one finds a virus or a suspicious file and then the other also finds the same, both programs will be competing over exclusive rights on dealing with that virus or suspicious file. Each anti-virus may attempt to remove the offending file and quarantine it at the same time resulting in a resource management issue as to which program gets permission to act first. If one a... sorry to be in exact. but for the last few days, the system "sticks" (goes unresponsive), curser doesn't work, "unresponsive" appears on program bar. this is particularly true on internet-dependant programs (outlook, ie, safari, chrome, etc) and Microsoft programs (principally word, less often in excel or powerpoint). startup times are generally much longer than a week ago longer.

it is like something is intervening and then letting go after 5-20 seconds.

MSE has a good reputation - some of the long-time contributors on BC use it as their primary defense, so it must work - but to make certain, I would suggest you download Malwarebytes from here :

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/

Install and run it, let it update, then run a quick scan. If this also says your system is clean, you probably are. I would also run chkdsk/r from the command line run as an administrator.

To do this, it's 'Start / Programs / Accessories / Command prompt' . When you get to Command prompt, right click and choose 'Run as administrator'. It will then say it can't run chkdsk because the disk is in use, but will do it the next time the computer starts. Just re-boot and it will do its thing. Depending on how much you have on your system it can take about an hour. I was unaware that I had 422,000 files on my 'C' drive !

Every once in a while you will get a program go unresponsive, this is normally put down as one of the joys of running Windows, but it shouldn't be happening regularly.

Having problem with Envy 700-210, computer is almost unresponsive with all apsects, i.e. opening files, connecting to web pages, opening apps, etc. this just happened a few days ago.  I can open some things, but it may take 10-15 min. or longer depending on what I try to open. I have tried rebooting, clean reboot (shutting down and unpluging) disc cleanup, defragmenting (actually started defragmenting Saturday, still not done today).  I do not know what else to do, there is barely anything on the hard drive,  maybe used 12 GB, it has 8 GB RAM installed when I purchased it new, computer itself is only 2 1/2 years old, with Windows 8.1 64 bit originally installed, upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago with no problems.  Please help me get it back to speed I'm open to any suggestions.  Thanks for your help!!

@Cleaves4115, welcome to the forum. The symptoms that you describe sound like you need to do a full System Recovery.  There may be conflicts with drivers and other software.  Defragging the hard drive should not take this long, for certain. Before you do the Recovery, you should test the power supply unit (PSU).  The PSU can cause problems that we normally don't consider relevant to a failing PSU.  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot it.

I've checked for viruses using malwarebytes and it didn't detect anything. Everything has been really slow and not responding lately. I've tried closing out all the programs and just loading the one I wanted to use and it's still really bad. My internet has also been disconnecting constantly as well. I am not sure if this relates to the problem. Even task manager will not respond.. My computer will sometimes just completely freeze up for 1-2 minutes. I have a pretty good computer too, built for gaming. It's never been like this before only recently..

Computer was running fine the previous night, I go to turn in on in the morning noticed it taking an unusually long time to load and then when it finally did the backround and appearance were changed to a much older windows look, which weren't even the defaults when I bought it and it didn't have my old settings saved or anything. I then noticed my internet connection wasn't up and I didnt even see the icon in the toolbar. I tried checking the connection and was told that no internet adapters were found and the menu was blank. I went to the device manager screen and saw that my computer is pretty much no longer picking up most of the hardware. Any programs I tried to run took an eternity to load and if they worked would soon become unresponsive, even basic programs to change comp settings an whatnot would soon become unresponsive and just freeze on the screen. I tried looking for similar problems and fiddling around but I keep getting no where. I am really a noob when it comes to issues like this, my friend who I usually go to for my comp problems has no idea and just suggested reformatting but before I attempt to go dig up those disks and loose everything, I was curious to see if any of you could offer a better solution. Oh and my op sys is win xp

Computer was running great, no issues. Turned it on today and it took 10 times longer to start. Then no wi-fi, even though wi-fi was turned on. Says "no connections available" When doing diagnosis it says the problem is that there is no ethernet cord plugged in. Then shut down computer and restarted and a screen comes up that says Your computer can not start "Startup repair is checking your system for problems..." Gets no farther than that. Just says "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.. I feel like maybe I picked up a virus somehow but don't know for sure.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit, service pack 2. The computer is a Gateway FX 6800-11 and I've had it for a couple years with no issue. Within the last couple weeks, however, after it has been on for a couple hours or so it will totally lock up. I am usually able to move the mouse around, but either I try to open something and it acts like it is thinking but never finishes, or there is no response at all when I click. The computer becomes totally non-responsive at this point other than moving the mouse - ctrl-alt-del does nothing. I can sometimes see exactly when it froze because the clock will be frozen at whatever time it happened. I have to hold the power button on the computer down to get it to go off. Then, sometimes when it is booting back up it runs chkdisk, but it never finds any issues.

I have tried disabling all the starting programs and non-Microsoft background processes but it will still freeze up eventually. I also checked to make sure all the fans in the computer are still working, and they are.

Could this be a failing harddrive issue? But then, wouldn't chkdisk find something? Thanks a lot for any advice.

After logging in, my The Weather Channel app will load and everything seems to be normal. It seems like I can make one action, whether that is closing the weather app or clicking on an icon. After making that one single action my computer will suddenly stop responding. I can move the mouse cursor but cannot click on anything and nothing works! Even when I press ctrl+alt+delete, it sometimes will not respond to that. When it does and I attempt to start the task manager, it won't load that either!

Recently I had installed Avast Free Antivirus while still having Trend Micro Office Client as well. Could this be the issue? I've tried to uninstall certain programs but can't even get to that point before my computer quits on me. Extremely frustrating! Please help!

Hi, I built my gaming rig last christmas, and it has served me pretty well except for one annoying problem. And frankly, it's starting to get very old.

Basically, when I start some programs, my computer seems non-responsive when I click the icon. This happens on games too. For example, I'll double-click Toca Race Driver 3 on my desktop, and hear cpu activity for a bit. Then, nothing will happen for several minutes. I'll just be sitting on my desktop.

It's as if I never launched the program in the first place. Out of frustration, I'll click the icon again, to have the same situation duplicated. Next, I CTRL+ATL+DEL, only to see "racedriver.exe" on my apps :x . Finally, 10 minutes later, the program will actually execute and I'll see the game running. In fact, I make a habit to leave my room for a bit when I launch games such as Race Driver 3, BF2142, and CS Source, because of the time I spend waiting for them to really launch onto my screen.

This happens in more than just games. My rig acts like it's down-right bogged when running other programs. I find myself closing internet explorer windows all of the time due to them not responding. I had to configure my microphone yesterday, only to find the wizard crash on me two or three times.

I really don't know where to start if this is a hardware issue. My old Pentium4 HP wouldn't do anything as odd as this, ever. I ran two instances of memtest overnight, and it returned no errors. I'm using... Read more

Answer:Computer non-responsive when executing programs

Try running memtest you may have some memory problems developing .
You can run scandisk or the western digital utility to check your drive on boot up .You may have an OS corruption problem or virus . Also look at your power monitor in BIOS make sure your voltages look ok .

Hi, Im new to these forums and have very basic computer knowledge. My computer is at times unresponsive ie it will work then all of a sudden either stop responding, slow right down or completely shut off on its own. I do regular adware checks and also use AVG free antivirus. I also noticed that my norton firewall was disabled, when I restart my computer it is always disabled again, so im always having to turn it on. I did enstall windows defender firewall but it wont open for me at all due to unidentified problem.

I have run the bitdefender online scan which picked up the following..

I'd had the motherboard AND the hard drive replaced. Maybe a month or two later, the first problem that appeared was the startup. It occasionally gets stuck in the Windows logo, pulsing on and off. I have to force it to turn off and then go through a system thing that starts in black and white (forget the name of that). I can get in afterwards but it can take an hour, sometimes less, sometimes more. That's one problem. I think I'll stop there for now. I'm not savvy but not a total illiterate. I'd appreciate some help here, I'm not very techie minded (although I try) so please bear with my lack of experiance/terminology - Simple version of question is - I think my computer's kaput and I want to find out if ressurection's possible or if it's time to give it up and get a new PC...Over the past few weeks I've been using my computer alot (adobe photoshop/illustrator/internet etc), it's become alot slower than usual, I've had random restarts out of nowhere, and a Dr Watson message, virus scanner was clean when last used. So I'm not sure if my usage has outweighed the limits? The problem came when I last used the computer 2 days ago, I went to turn off from the start bar and the usual box came up of 'stand by, turn off, restart'. Clicked 'turn off'. Waited. Nothing happened, tried a few times (patiently), but still nothing happened. So I tried right clicking on the task bar to bring up the task manager to try and turn off from there, but when clicked task manager nothing came up, tried alt/ctrl/delete but no task manager, left it for half an hour just in case, but the computer wouldn't turn of at all, so had to turn off on the base unit.Coming back to the computer this morning (as if leaving it for a day or two would calm it down..) - when I turn it on the base unit it makes the usual noises, the Windows XP logo comes on screen and the blue loading bar underneath, but after a few minutes of this (which is longer than normal) the screen turns blank with just the mouse poin... My computer has been really slow and almost every program or application I run is not responsive for like 5 minutes before finally running properly. However, when I minimize then restore the window it is another 5 minutes of waiting before it works properly. I have attached my Hijackthis log. I am running XP SP2, installed Norton Internet Security Suite yesterday, ran a virus scan and nothing came up. No other symptoms than non-responsive applications at first. If I try to close them through the Task Manager it takes forever before they shutdown too.

Thanks.

Hey everyone,
Been awhile...
So i have a perplexing issue i cannot seem to concor. My mother recently bought a dell inspiron 3531 and it had windows 8. She hates it and so do i, so we bought her a windows 7 key and she is on her way, or so we thought. I installed windows 7 ultimate, clean install, on her laptop. Installed all the drivers, ran windows update, did the whole 9 yards. One issue remains though and it is ruining this laptop for her (she can be picky at times)...
Whenever I close the lid on the laptop, it goes to sleep. When i wake the laptop up, the wireless network has a red X on it, saying no connections are available. When i try to run troubleshooter, it tells me to turn on the switch for the wireless card (there isn't one on her laptop). I use the function key to try and turn it on and it has no response. They only way to get it working again is to do a restart of the laptop. I have done all the stuff mentioned above. I have also tried to mess with the power options, but i dont know if i am missing something. Any and all hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone,
Ben

Was browsing internet today when windows started popping up left and right, it was like the mouse became super sensitive, cause whenever i moved it, a new window opened. so, i figured it was some sort of trojan and tried scanning. well i couldn't get to the scanner cause of everything opening randomly. then, the computer turned off. i rebooted into safe mode and tried system restore. upon restart it informed me that the restore could not be carried out. so i rebooted into safe mode again retried more checkpoints. nope. i tried the scanners in safe mode, they wouldn't work. i tried downloading avast, after installation it said was restored wrong or something andthe computer promptly turned off. it seems like someone is controlling my computer. everytime i try to fix it, it really starts acting up. the only thing i can think that happned, i downloaded a song off limewire. but the cdomputer was fine for awhile after that. Any help please? i do not know what to do!

Answer:Computer non-responsive to system restore/scanner-HELP

i downloaded a song off limewire.Using any peer-to-peer (P2P) or file sharing program (i.e. Limewire, eMule, Kontiki, BitTorrent, uTorrent, BearShare, Azureus/Vuze) is a security risk which can make your system susceptible to a sm?rg?sbord of malware infections, remote attacks, and exposure of personal information. The reason for this is that file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft, system infection and remote access exploit by attackers who can take control of your computer without your knowledge. Even if you change the risky default settings to a safer configuration, downloading files from an anonymous source increases your exposure to infection because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many malicious worms and Trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities. In some instances the infection may cause so much damage to your system that recovery is not possible and a Repair Install will NOT help!. In those cases, the only option is to wipe your drive, reformat and reinstall the OS. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup... Read more

I have had a few instances of the keyboard not responding to input as I started the computer.  I had to restart/shutdown and start again in order to finally get the keyboard to work.  Even then, the keyboard stopped responding after I got logged in and was entering data on a website.  I don't know if it is a hardware issue or a problem with a keyboard mode or other.

I went into MSConfig and turned off a ton of processes that were enabled during startup so I could create this log. The PC is barely responsive and takes 10 minutes to change screens. I noticed Windows Defender hogging the CPU and turning it off gave it a little ability to work. Also, there are 2 accounts on this PC - both are "administrators" however in one it tells me that the administrator has disabled task manager and in the other account it won't let me recover the active desktop. Any help is very much appreciated.

Happy holidays!

Hi Folks,

I've had Windows 10 for a while now, and i've had this problem the entire time. I am having trouble finding a trigger, so this may be a little vague and I apologise for that in advance.

My main purpose for my machine is Photoshop and Lightroom, as I am a photographer. Parts are as follows;
Motherboard: Gigabyte (Will come back with model number)
CPU: i7 4790k (Not overclocked)
RAM: 32gb of 1600Mhz (will come back with brand)
Video Card: Asus GTX960 Turbo 2gb
HDD: 1x Samsung 850 EVO 250gb SSD , Seagate Barracuda 2tb, 120gb SSD (will come back with brand) note: issues were apparent before 120gb HDD was installed.

Essentially, the issue is described as in the title. At seemingly random intervals, my computer will not respond to any inputs. The mouse still moves freely across the screen, however there is no reaction to anything else. Additionally, Photoshop will, seemingly at random, slow down to an absolute crawl (this is usually followed by the non-responsive state).

In checking, my drivers are all up to date and after other checks with programs like CCleaner, CHKDSK, Ram Check, and even Kaspersky, there are no issue with my machine.

To my great frustration, I don't know enough to know if there is anywhere that will give me a report on what the issue(s) may be, except to say that I had this set up (ex the 120gb SSD) running on Windows 7, and it was immaculate.

Answer:Computer non-responsive. No BSOD or visible error. Mouse still moves

Hi,
I could be absolutely wrong but to me it looks like a hardware or RAM-related prolbem, rather than a Windows issue. It could also (highly improbable, but who knows) be the incompatibility of your PS version with Win 10.
Finally I would use Kaspersky Rescue Disk to check if a malware ddn't do any harm to your OS.

Do you use any USB hubs?

Hi! If anyone could help me with my problem I would be infinitely grateful.I'm usually pretty good at removing viruses by doing an internet search to target my problem but this one completely baffles me and I'm panicking a bit! I'm using Windows Vista. So about an hour ago my computer started slowing down as it expected when I have been running my computer for many hours, with a lot of windows and programs opened up. So I restarted my computer and tried to reopen Firefox. It redirected me to a screen that told me my Firefox had been updated and that's when my computer becomes non-responsive. The mouse/pointer moves freely but when I click anywhere on the screen, nothing happens. (For example, usually buttons become beveled or highlighted on mouseover but on my possibly-infected computer this does not occur). Typing anything on the keyboard does not generated a response either (I tried doing alt+tab to see if I could switch windows. I tried doing ctrl+alt+delete). Interestingly, I can still eject the CD-driver by pressing the button on the side of my computer...That works. Otherwise, all I can do is hold down the power button with my finger until the screen turns off.I have nothing popping up on the screen though. No windows or random programs to indicate that I have some sort of rogue program. What I have tried:Starting the computer in safe mode (without networking). After everything loaded, I did not try to open up Firefox. Instead, the first thing I ... Read more

First, turn off the caps lock key, unless it is broken too. That is considered rude.To get any meaningful help you need to give some information about the system, how old it is, when the problem started, other problems with it, what happened unusual right before it.So info on the computer including the make and model number and the power supply, including maker and wattage (it's on the side of the power supply inside the case).See below. I am not sure if it is supported by the forum but I used the latest Hiren's Boot CD 9.9 to boot into mini xp ran spybot search and destroy and kapersky - came back with nothing. Also tried other programs but no others seem to work. Anyone know anything about this and the PC problem? Thanks

Try booting into Safe Mode. If that works, you can try running MalwareBytes and SpyBot Search & Destroy from there.

If it doesn't, try booting from the XP CD and performing a Repair.

Question: Non-responsive HDD

(I'm sending this from wife's laptop so TSG Sysinfo not much use!)
System: 'Advent' tower PC, Intel Core i7 3440 3.4Ghz Quad Core CPU; 12Gb RAM (DDR3); 2Tb HDD (Seagate)(SATA), using Windows 7.

Sequence of events:
1 Attempted to reboot PC following a minor update but PSU did not power up - it wasn't a particularly quite unit so silence pointed to a PSU fault. On removing the cover, the CPU cooling fan was not operating either, confirming no power.

2 The OEM PSU (CWT GPA450P) was not easily replaceable. Having had to replace PSUs in earlier PCs, I opted for a Corsair CX500M. At this point, I committed the cardinal sin of not practising what I used to preach before I retired - having replaced PSUs before, I did not think I needed to RTFM! Having removed the faulty PSU, I unpacked the replacement and fitted the black box in position before noticing that there were some significant differences between the OEM PSU's 'open' cable loom and the Corsair's sleeved loom. One of these difference was that instead of the 'old fashion' direct cable links to the SATA devices, there was a variety of alternative modular connectors. Had I read the Manual, of course, I would have seen that these plug into the PSU via black sockets on the face of the black CPU box but at this point, they were now hidden in the dark depths between the PSU and the back end of the DVD drive housing. Instead, I looked around for a connector that fitted a 4-pin ... Read more

Answer:Non-responsive HDD

Hello, unfortunately there is a very good chance that the HDD was damaged by the psu incident. The easy way to determine that would be to remove the hdd and then hold it while the pc is turned on. You should be able to hear and feel the platters spinning. After that, just to make sure, you can use a sata to usb adapter and plug it in to a different computer and see if it detects it.

Question: IE Not Responsive

I hope I am posting in the right place. My Windows 7 pc has been acting up for quite a while. I am not sure if it's an ISP issue or just my pc. When I am running IE or Firefox or Chrome, my websites become non-responsive. Or I will click on a link and nothing happens. It is very "jumpy" meaning pages seem to lock and then switch to new pages after some time has passed. I get the message box pop-up saying that IE is uisng so much RAM and it is usually over 250 MB. I am not sure if it's a hardware issue or internet issue. I did a speedtest and came back over 4 mbps. My issues seem to get worse by the evening. I don't have many issues when using software...just internet websites.

Earlier today I installed Outpost Free Internet Security, it crashed my network connection so I uninstalled it, then had to perform system restore. Then I opened MS Outlook and PC turned itself off immediately and restarted. Message came up that Windows had recovered from a serious error.
Came on tonight no programs would open, i have put Xp disk in to try and fix and it seems okay(ish).
Other anomaly is that i keep getting message " this computer has undergone significant hardware changes since Xp installed and XP needs reactivation within 3 days. I have had to do this on average once a month including today.
I rang Microsoft to activate over the phone and spoke to a real, very helpful person who also found it strange that it keeps asking to reactivate.

Anyway I have attached the logs from event log, dont know where else to look for errors. Please if you can help i would appreciate it as I am pulling my hair out.

Di

What is Okay(ish) really mean? does the computer work properly, and do all of your programs work? You do not have to include all of the logs. Just instances with a red X the yellow warnings don't mean that much, and the logs are too long to read through.
You can do some maintenance. Go to Start/Run and type chkdksk C: /R and press enter. Then press a Y for Yes and then restart the computer. Check Disk will run at next bootup to fix any file errors. You can also go to Start/Run and type SFC /scannow and press enter. Put the XP CD in and it will replace any missing files from the CD. If you don't have a current Anti-Virus Software, download the free Microsoft Security Essentials (do not have more then one AV software program on your computer at a time) and do a full scan. Also go to Start/Run and type dfrg.msc and press enter, highlight the C: drive and press Defrag Now.

My friend finally brought his pc into me and asked for my help in fixing it as he has not been able to use it for the last 2 years!!!He blames virus infections and he is not wrong. He keeps getting the dr watson postmortem debugger message and I have turned this off in the registry by changing the Aeopen value to 0 from 1.I have instaled most of the recommended fixes from a previous thread and run sfc /scannow.Over 1500 objects were detected by a-squared and I've not been able to run a AVG virus scan yet as the main problem is that now I'm getting an Explorer error (explorer.exe - application error)and cant open any explorer window or control panel in normal boot, but I can in safe mode. The pc is running windows xp sp2.Your suggestions would be most appreciated please.

I am trying to restore the computer to original factory settings AKA "AS FURNISHED" because of a crashed hard drive. The F11 key does not let me get to system recovery and the computer goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor - Windows 7 Operating System. I have a boot disk which lets me get to recovery however, system restore does not work as there is only one restore point so I am screwed. I do not have an image to restore to either. Any suggestions?

Windows GDI update for 2k3. My IIS 6.0 server just started getting flaky on me. Only one website - all ISAPI shutdown - only .asp extensions allowed. URLScan 2.5 installed.

No notice in the logs - just an unresponsive IIS 6.0 server. Doesn't appear crashed, and no insane processes - i.e. no hogs. However, it just goes down - and I have to restart IIS 6.0 to get it running again.

Nothing has changed- except for a patch from microsoft a few days ago that was a "GDI update". Anyone else seeing IIS 6.0 flakyness in the last 2 days?

I thought it might be a DOS or something - but wouldn't a syn attack shut down all my interfaces? Or just the interface in question? What kind of logs would I look for to see some kind of attack? I have Scan Alert which scans my server and reports 0 vulnerabilities. So - at least I have taken care of some of the obvious attacks.

anyone have thoughts for debugging or unravelling this issue?

Thanks

Got a solicited Outlook email which I opened.
That brought up several major areas or topics with the option to select one by cuing on a "button" for that one.
However, that accomplishes nothing, regardless of whether I click with the left or right mouse button. There are no url's, (?) to copy or select, nor could I find anything else to select or cue to open the sub category.
Not sure what is going on! Why set things up so one can select a topic if selecting does nothing.
Almost sounds like I designed it, and I am an illiterate computer illiterate

Alright so after a bad download, my laptop got infected and I did the removal using Avast and Malwarebytes anti-malware. It's good now but here's the thing. You see my laptop is a good laptop for gaming and such, so I can handle games especially the ones I have been playing, but the thing is whenever I launch a game such as league of legends or Planetside 2 or anything, the whole client (game) goes "not responding" and then "responding" in less than a second and it keeps alternating for 5-10 seconds and I cant type or do anything, its like tabbing in and out really quickly and Idk waht to do because this never happened before. Im happy to provide any info that is required. My operating system is also Windows 10. The name of the laptop is Lenovo y-40

Now don't get me wrong here. I like Emsisoft and how it operates. But lately I've been playing my usual games from Steam and from some of my online games like Mortal Online and Elsword, when Emsisoft suddenly steps in saying they're giving off suspicious behaviour.
This has gotten my interest piqued as to why Emsisoft would react to my games like this, especially my Steam games. I recently got Planetside 2 and during play Emsisoft came up with 2-3 reactions.
Is this to be expected of Emsisoft? or would this be a cause for concern?

Answer:Emsisoft being a tad too responsive?

Hi IllusionEclipse,If these games are official Steam games then I'd tend to say that these are false-positives. Any change you can upload the flagged file(s) to http://www.virustotal.com and post a link to the scan results here? I can then have a closer look at this.

Question: Responsive slow

I have a custom built desktop. It is Windows XP Professional SP3, Intel Pentium 4 3.20GHZ, 2GB DDR-400. My computer is pretty slow, it takes time to do stuff such as trying to choose a file to burn etc. I usually have to give it 1 minute or more so it can load. I have tried to do a full scan using DrWeb but after a minute of scanning it just randomly freezes, which i have to restart it. So i can't find out if there are other viruses on it. I've tried using sfc /scannow but it keeps saying to insert the XP disc which i did. Other people had told to copy the I386 folder to C: drive and change the registry to run from there but that didn't work. Can someone please help me, this may have a lot issues?

I'm a tech at a huge dealership. Some, not all, of our pcs have an issue with IE running really slow and some times not responsive at all. The thing is, all other programs wether it be firefox or some kind of messanger are not affected at all. I originally thought maybe it was some kind of connection issue, but after having both AT&T and the communications company that originally setup our connection come out and verify there is nothing wrong, I'm stuck searching for answers. I know it's not the "temp" or "offline" files as we delete and refresh the pc's all the time.

I'm really at a dead end here and I'm praying some of you guys and girls can help a brother out!

If you have any ideas and need to contact me asap, please feel free to pm me for my cell phone.

Thanks in advance,

Hello guys.

My first post on here.

I have a real problem with my laptop. It started playing up a few weeks ago, and would freeze after clicking to open a picture.. The egg timer would come up but it wouldnt open the picture.. After tapping the touchpad a few times, the message would appear "not responding" I then would have to clixk the red x and it would then bring up another box saying do you wish to end this not responding program..I click end now and it would then shut down internet explorer.. Doing this and starting again seemed to work, but it started to get more frequent.

Ive now got problems trying to sell things on ebay. The program freezes on the add picture page on every attempt.

Ive used my symntec antivirus and that says things are all ok.. Ive bought this registry cure thingy and that hasnt helped either.. Its now doing my head in.. Any ideas?

Ive tried scandisk, defrag.. but still to no avail, and the computer is defo slower than it used to be..

Im not the most intelligent pc lad.. so be gentle...

PLEASE HELP>>

The keyboard on my ideapad U530 is not as responsive as I would like for it to be.  I have to hit the keys quite hard, which of course slows down my speed and affects the accuracy of my input.    Is there a way to change the amount of pressure that I need to use on the keyboard?

Answer:keyboard is not very responsive

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

There is no setting that I am aware of in Windows or the system BIOS to adjust the keyboard sensitivity on your model.  Is it certain keys or is the whole keyboard like this ?  Was it always like this or is the problem getting worse ?  If the keyboard was always like this even when the laptop was new, it could just be the way this keyboard responds to key presses.

Answer:Non-responsive programs

Hiya

Lets see what you have running, as you may have some background things running causing this problem.

Lets take a look at a log. go to http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Regards

Hi, I cleared a trojan out of my system about 3 weeks back and for some reason I can't use the taskbar whenever I restart. I've downloaded TaskbarPlusRepair tool program and the only way I can actually use the taskbar is by using this program each time I restart, which is beginning to get quite tedious... Each time I use it, the program restarts the Windows Shell thing, does anyone know how to just have this start up along with everything else?

Like which sites cant you get into that you would in microsoft? There should be no difference if u import ur settings from internet explorer to mozilla. I bought a MS Wireless Optical Mouse some time ago. The installation was not a problem, however I have a very strange problem in that for no apparent reason sometimes the mouse will have no or very delayed responsiveness to clicks and scrolls.

This is very annoying and when I use the spirit of the irritation built up to press the button harder this will most often on 3rd or 4th occasion get the mouse in action. After a while it the non responsiveness stops (10 minutes to one hour) and the mouse will work fine again. It is not normally a problem on start up.

I have changed batteries, reset the mouse "receiver", installed more RAM (now have 512 MB) and nothing has helped.

Can anyone out there please help me as this is very frustrating.

Finally, if I use the keyboard (when possible) there is no delay, only when using the mouse (so if I cannot scroll with the mouse there is no problem using the arrows up and done for example)...

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! Will be much appreciated.

Brgds
Bobby

This may be a double post, but I can't find my original posting.  My x230 is approximately 30 days past warranty (Windows 7 Pro).  Overnight it has become non-responsive. I have tried with and without battery, two different power supplies. I have tried, multiple times, holding the power button down to "discharge"?  No lights showing, no response to any buttons being pushed.  Within the last week I accepted Lenovo's prompting to update various files, including BIOS.  My recollection it has been re-booted at least once since the Lenovo system updates.  For what it is worth, I have always had the touchpad "turned off" via the software.  Any help, thoughts, or insight would be appreciated.

Answer:X230 non responsive

Make sure that you hold the power button down for a minute without the battery in! Otherwise its a motherboard issue and you might need to buy a new one

I have a computer running XP SP2 + all updates to date, for a few months now when you go to press the start button the system can take upto 30-60 seconds to respond, once it does your right for another few minutes then stop's responding for another 30-60 seconds and keeps repeating this cycle. I have checked all running processors and there doesn't seem to be anything there that should be.

My initial thinking is that it's trying to check something which holds the system up regular???? Anyone else have this or seen this problem???

Thanks in advance!!

Sometimes my XP machine (P4 2.6ghz, 512ram) gets in these weird cycles where some of the buttons on applications wont respond to me clicking on them, and sometimes, it switches the left click for right clicking. This seems to happen more often when I leave the computer on for a while.

Any ideas for fixes ?
I guess I should also mention that this seems to happen regardless of what type of mouse/keyboard im using, and whether its ps2 or usb connection.

When a CD/DVD is inserted the drive fails to run and when clicking on the icon for that drive in the My Computer window or using the Run function from the Start menu, it tells me to insert a disc into the drive. This should be a basic function but won't work and is driving me mad. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi,
I have a system that when you log-off of a user to get back into the start screen to log in as another user, the keyboard is non-responsive but the mouse works. You have to restart to get the keyboard working again.
I am logging out of a limited rights account into an administrator account
or visa versa.

XP Pro with all updates
no name clone
AMD Athlon 1.16
2GB RAM

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how to fix this bug.

TIA

Nick

Answer:non responsive keyboard after log-out

Almost sounds like the drivers for the keyboard are not on the other user's account. Be sure that it isn't some software that was set to -only- the administrative account. I've never encountered it doing that myself, as I only use one account, but that's my best guess. Anyone else have a suggestion?

Hi! I have been having an issue with my touchscreen... it doesn't respond at all. My laptop is the HP Pavillion Notebook 15 in touchsmart (N5P48UA#ABA). It is running on (freshly updated) Windows 10, and is only 5 months old. The Issue: Several days ago my touch screen stopped responding - at first it was intermittent on-and-off. As of recent it has not been functioning period. Everything else works fine on the laptop, and there are no damages or cracks in the screen. Steps I have taken to resolved the issue (all have failed):I cleaned off the screen with a screen-wipe I restarted my laptopI restored the laptop to factory settingsI received chat support and then remote support from HP (didn't do anything)I spent over an hour on the phone with HP support (wasted time)And of course, I have done plenty of research on the internet. Conclusions that may aid a solution. After spending a ton of time trying to fix this, I know what the problem is not. In Device Manager there are only two drivers listed under Human Interface Devices (HID- compliant wireless radio controls & HP Wireless Button Drive). Its almost like the touch screen driver... doesn't even exist. As a side note, while the touchscreen was working, There were several more drivers listed under the HID section... its almost like they dissapeared. On the HP site, there are drivers that you can download, but the HID drivers that I need are not listedThe touch HID drivers are not ... I think I pretty much know the answer to this question however I'm in a slight dilemma.

I have an HP laptop here with the trackpad not responding at all. I dug all of the viruses out of it and reinstalled the drivers several times, as well as a system restore from 10 days ago. But the trackpad still didn't work. I considered re-imaging it since it has a recovery partition with a factory-loaded default image, but instead I decided to pop in a Linux LiveCD.

Upon booting Ubuntu, the trackpad still didn't work.

I checked all Fn keys. Nothing helped activate it. There's also a dedicated on/off button by the trackpad. It of course is enabled.

I think it's pretty safe to say it's hardware related, but my tools are at work and this is bugging the **** out of me. Is there anything else you guys think I should try before I crack this thing open tomorrow?

Answer:Trackpad Not Responsive.

There is a cable that connects that trackpad to the MB, while you do have to take a lot of the laptop apart to get to this cable it isan't as hard to get to as the processor. I agree, it does sound hardware related (assuming you've hooked up an external mouse and it worked) and if the plug is fine, you may need to replace the track pad.

My Pavilion laptop has a button right above the trackpad that turns it off - stupid i know but just make sure that light is on if your laptop has that button.

My pc has lately as expected gone very slow and not as responsive.
At the start-up especially. I have to wait a good 2mins before touching anything or things start to 'Not respond' and such.

I was wondering if you guys could recommend me ANYTHING that I could do to speed up my pc significantly.
Exclude, formatting my pc / buying new parts.

Thanks for your time.

Answer:Slow/Not responsive

First verify you're defragging your drive regularly. Vista is normally set to do this automatically so I doubt fragmentation has anything to do with it, but you should check to make sure.

Second, run antivirus. Sometimes a virus can slow a PC down. Again, I doubt this has anything to do with a slow PC, but it might.

Third, check your startup programs. If your PC is running slow at startup in particular, one real possibility is that you have a bloated number of programs and services starting up. Go through the list in msconfig and see if there's anything you can disable. Also use the Services console for the same thing.

Post PC specs. You might be low on resources.

This normally takes a couple of days for it to start occurring but after that when I lock the system when I log back in explorer.exe is non responsive. Once it becomes unresponsive once though every time I lock the system and come back it is unresponsive again.

None of the apps running at the same time seem to be in common. I think the only app I have not eliminated yet was Chrome.

I ran memtest overnight and it didnt have any errors. I also ran MBR Check Super Anti Spyware and TDSSKiller and they came up clean.

I disabled all non ms apps using shellexec and action center is clear. I also verified and made sure all drivers are current.

The event viewer doesn't show anything of value. Just that it become unresponsive.

I am pretty much stumped at this point. This is a brand new system too.

Any advice would be great.

I'll tell you how I solved the exact same problem when it happened to me. I think IE is crapping out on everybody. But when I haad the problem, I got Mozilla Firefox. http://cs.infospace.com/ClickHandle....2&ep=0&hash=CAF74213EA7C6B3C8A1F2E224C01EB83 Copy and paste this URL into your browser when it is working so that you can download Firefox. It is a more stable and dependable browser to use. And it's free also. I hope this helps you as it did me.

Last night I was showing a young child my FSX, and all the things that you could do with it. Somehow he started playing with the keyboard and the next time I opened up FSX the joystick movements were not responding in the aircraft. I checked it out by using FS 2004, and no problem, it worked fine, so the connection wasn't the problem. I think it must have been due to the kid playing on the keyboard which made the jostick unresponsive when using FSX. Can you help please.

Answer:FSX - non responsive joystick

this happens to me alot using my flight stick and xbox360 controller. when you start up fsx keep your flight stick unplug till you get passed the loading screen. pause your fsx plug in the flight stick and wait for a minute for the computer to load it in now go to your controller and see if it is active you might have to select it rather then the mouse for controlles. also add if you have fsuipc. cause it could be the problem as well always good idea to add it when asking for assistance. because it has speacail key and joystick assignments as well
