Preferred Solution: after putting vista into safe mode it will no longer opn java script or flash players

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: after putting vista into safe mode it will no longer opn java script or flash players

Unless you actually made some changes to the configuration, things should have returned to normal once you rebooted from Safe Mode.

Vista's "System Restore" would probably be the quickest fix for this and you will lose nothing by doing it.

However if you are using Internet Explorer, you might want to go to Tools > Add-Ons and make sure that all the Adobe Flash stuff there is present and enabled.

Also in Internet Options > Security Settings > Custom you can reset all settings there to their defaults.

Finally if you are using a 3rd party firewall -- some of these scripts can be blocked by their configurations.

Recently, I've been having problems viewing loads of things on the internet. It's always the same-ish error that comes up. This ones from youtube, I can't view any videos all of a sudden: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Get the latest flash player. "

I went to my internet settings and made sure javascript was on. As for the damn adobe flash update, that never works. It always pops up as an annoying active x bar, i click it and nothing happens. I've been to the official site for it and the same thing happens. I have tried to install it so many times.
When something does come up for the flash, its like an installation thing but instead of saying "Adobe flash player 9 update" or something it just says "adobe flash player".

What do I do? I can't view things on the internet.

Thank you
Y. M.

Answer:Java script/flash problems

Check your security software and firewall to see if scripting is being blocked.

I get the same error messages for YouTube and Adobe in Firefox with the NoScript extension turned on (this blocks javascript). When I set it to allow scripts, the page loads as normal with no errors.

Problem with Java Script and Flash Player

Hello....I run XP, and up until a week ago, there were no problems with watching Youtube. Today, I get.....Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.....

So, I downloaded the flash player, and it says success, but no movies. My java script appears enabled, as it should be. I downloaded Adobe Reader 9, and Flash Player 9, but no change. I did this several times.

As of now, I did a Restore, and am back to Adobe Reader 8. I don't know what Flash Player I have. So I'm back where I started.

Can anyone help me, please? If I need to uninstall anything, like a current flash player, I didn't want to do it if I'm not positive about what I'm doing. And should I get Adobe Reader 9?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have them installed on my computer, but when I try to open a video, it tells me that I need to install Adobe Flash. I was in a virus program, and it told me that my Java Script was not enabled. I checked everything I could think of, but couldn't see where it was not enabled! I have uninstalled both these programs and reinstalled them, but to no avail. Help! I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. I am also using Chrome.

Answer:Adobe Flash and Java Script don't work

Hello jdthtd and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes the reason why you can't install the latest version of Adobe Flash is because a previous version hasn't been completely removed from the computer. Try using the official Adobe Flash uninstaller and then try installing the latest version (which as of today is 11.5.502.135). Don't forget to uncheck any added toolbars, browsers, etc that might be offered with the new Flash.

I'm a little confused with your second problem regarding JavaScript. JavaScript is a browser-based scripting language. It allows programmers and advertisers to create interactive web pages with pop-ups, etc on the web pages. Because it's browser-based it's not something you download in the traditional sense. To enable/disable JavaScript in Internet Explorer go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Security tab > click Custom Level button > scroll down to the Scripting section. That's where you would enable or disable JavaScript.

In Chrome, see this article;

Enable JavaScript in Google Chrome |

I'm guessing that you may have received some kind of alert that a program you were trying to run (an anti-virus program, perhaps?) needed Java (a programming language) and not JavaScript. If this is the case, make sure all traces of any previously installed versions of Java have been removed from your computer. An effective removal tool is JavaRa. Once y... Read more

Go to Intener explorer-> tools->internet options->click the security tab-> click on custom level. A window will pop then you will be able to disable , enable or prompt, whatever you need to do.

However I have done that, I have also downloaded the latest versions of flash, and nothing!

I have unistalled then re-installed numerous times and nothing.

Answer:[SOLVED] Problem with Java Script and Flash Player

Hello flyerorange, Welcome to TSF!

Download Flash Player 9 again; then try this workaround...

Go Start > Run > type in the box C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash

Now copy the Flash9e.ocx file and then pasted it back in the same directory.

You will have created Copy of Flash9e.ocx; rename it to Flashe.ocx.

This effectively will give you two files; Flashe.ocx and Flash9e.ocx, both the same file; although with a different name, in the same directory.

This generally stops the issue you have described.

Post back with the outcome.

Kind Regards,

PLEASE can someone help!
Running IE 11 on 8.1 on a laptop.
I have just started to get a script error pop up all the time.  Sometimes I can click the x, yes or no and it will go away, until I try and do something else on the page, and then it pops up again.
Other times, I have to click x, yes or no 8 or 9 times as it just keeps popping up.
Either way, as soon as I try to do something else on the site, it pops up again.
It is worst on Facebook, but is happening on other sites too.  Not this one, by the way.
I have tried adjusting the debugging options.
I have tried running malwarebyte scan (x2)
I have tried doing a system restore (x2)
I have tried clearing all my cookies etc
I have tried refreshing my computer (x2)
After each of the above I have restarted my computer.
When I run the computer in safe mode with networking, I DO NOT get the error pop up. I know that this means something, but I do not have the tech knowhow to know what it is or what to do about it! :(
PLEASE can someone help me to stop this happening, in language intended for a non-techy idiot.

I have been using the instruction from "Safe Mode - Add to Windows Boot Manager in Windows 8" for a very long time to give me that extra chance to get into Safe Mode if Normal Mode is having problems. All of the Windows 8/8.1 PCs at our site are set up that way.

Just got a Lenovo Flex 2-15 with Windows 8.1. It allowed me to add the 2 entries that I always add to the Boot Manager (Safe and Safe with Networking). And I can see them there in MSCONFIG. But when I boot up, it just ignores the extra entries and just comes up in the main OS entry. Not only that, but then I discovered that F2 and F12 at boot up stopped working as well. So then I removed the safe mode entries and now I can do F2 and F12 at boot up just fine.

This PC is using Secure Boot and UEFI. And I'd like to continue using those. Has anyone come up with a way to add the safe mode entries in the Boot Manager and have them work?

Answer:No longer able to setup safe mode in BCDEDIT on new PC

Since I want to keep the newer EUFI and Secure Boot, I decided to use the command "bcdedit /set bootmenupolicy legacy" to make pressing the f8 key usable again and forget trying to add fake multiboot entries to the Boot Manager. Now I can get the same effect and eliminate that extra menu at the beginning which was only there in case I needed it. And then if I have a specific reason to use the Windows 8/8.1 troubleshooting, I can switch back using "bcdedit /set bootmenupolicy standard" whenever I want to. The other thing I found researching this is if I hold down the shift key when I click on restart, it automatically goes into troubleshooting mode, giving me the other options like system restore and such...the safe mode part still comes up ala windows 7, but the rest looks like the Windows 8 troubleshooting I've grown use to. So this is solved as far as I'm concerned.

Is it good, bad, or makes no difference to install java runtime environment in Safe Mode?

For installing version 7u11. Windows XP sp 3. 2.0GHz Celeron processor, 512 MB RAM. Machine been often running and responding slowly last several days. It gets stuck sometimes so installing big applications may push its resources too far all at once. This is why I wonder if Safe Mode works the system with less stress.

(I already have and run Norton Internet Security v.20, and Malwarebytes , both upgraded and regularly updated).

Answer:Install Java r.e. in Safe Mode

Normally, installing any software is required to be booted in normal setup. You may have other problems during the installation process regarding the downloaded software.

If Mid(ObjDialog.FileName, X, 1) = "\" Then
myAnswer = Left(ObjDialog.FileName, X)
X = 0
End If
Wscript.Echo myAnswer

End If

I get an error that ActiveX is not recognized or no longer allowed. (red bold line)

Are there any drivers, settings where I can get Vista to work as I want it to work and not what the developer thinks is "safe" for me?

To sum up: I can't install or run Dropbox anywhere but in safe mode. Something I'm running in normal Windows 8.1 mode is conflicting. I have searched logs my, but have found nothing, at least nothing I can decipher. Dropbox support couldn't help. Dropbox is the only executable installer I have that won't start. My dropbox account is running like a champ on various other Mac and Windows 7 and 8 machines at school and home. How can I resolve this?
I've had Dropbox 3.03, pro account, Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. Beginning two weeks ago, Dropbox's status had been stuck on "Upgrading Dropbox" and Windows Explorer was using up to 35%  CPU constantly. (I still was able to sync.) The status bar icon finally stopped loading about a week ago. The current Dropbox version is 3.2.9.
I have scanned and continue to scan daily using Avast 2015 (paid version, but usually not installed), Emsisoft, Malwarebytes, and ADWCleaner, all of which say I'm clean.
I uninstalled Dropbox to see if a fresh install would help, including removing all Dropbox folders and, of course, a restart. But, when I download a current version, it won't install. Nothing happens when I click the downloaded file except an increase in Windows Explorer CPU (25%) usage. This happens with both the online and offline downloads. This happens no matter what disk or portable device I try to run the downloaded installation files from.
Here are some other... Read more

A few days ago, I was about 2 minutes into a show on Mozilla, when my computer froze and I encountered the Bsod. My computer is almost 4 years old and due to an electrical sure years ago the motherboard was replaced, and most recent at the start of this year my computer ended up at the point where it couldnt even start, luckily we got that fixed with some new ram and a new copy of windows 7, sadly nothing memory wise was salvaged. Since then I have not once encountered problems with my computer until now.

When it first crashed I restarted and tried to resume my show foolishly, again 2minutes in the Bsod was back. This time I ran chckdsk which failed fairly far through, after which my computer will no longer boot to windows successfully for even a moment in windows. So far my attempts at saving my computer have been; repairing disk on the computer which fails every time, using my windows 7 disc to attempt a repair of windows, and booting a usb with AVG recovery software. The latter of which I used to scan for any potential viruses even though I had panda cloud running when it crashed (fully updated of course), only low level threats showed up all of which I have fixed. Next I performed a SMART health assessment, which failed. It tells me:

Drive failure expected in less than 24 hours. SAVE ALL DATA

Ok, so on a different board (I think I am the victim of terrible advice), I went through all of the malware steps with some people and I think I was pretty successful (and I d/l Firefox); however, after turning my computer off, I can no longer restart in "Normal Mode". I just get that terrifying blue screen.

(It should be noted that I also "tried" to wipe out IE from my computer, but I don't think it worked)

Here is what it says is my problem:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC000009A, 0x86EB7641, 0xF698D8EC, 0x00000000)

I have tried to restore my system, but it won't allow me to in Safe Mode, and it says that it is turned off anyway.

Someone told me to reboot in "Diagnostic Mode" after typing msconfig in "Run" while in Safe Mode. When I did that, the exact same thing happened, and I got this message:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x86EAF05A, 0xAAC79C98, 0x00000000)

I have since went back and set it back to normal getting the original message. I have googled these numbers, but to little avail. The best I can come up with is that I am having RAM issues and space issues; however, I currently have 16 free gigs... So I don't understand.

Any help would be greatly appreciated b/c I would really like to get around wiping out my harddrive (reformatting). I have a Gateway (with the restore disc) from Jan. '05. Pentium 4 Processor 530. Today, I decided to run a scandisk and defrag. I clicked the boxes that needed to be clicked when running a scandisk, then I restarted. To my surprise, for the first time ever, Scandisk didn't want to run. It said something like "Windows doesn't have access to the volume." After that, I tried to boot into Safe Mode... I couldn't. It froze while it was loading up, several times. Around this time, I remembered I tried to install Java Runtime Environment 4.whatever (the newest) yesterday and it wouldn't install fully because it couldn't gain access to certain files, or something along those lines.

I'm running Windows XP Home.

Any idea what the problem could be? I have a feeling they're all connected in some way.

Answer:Java, Safe Mode, and Scandisk troubles.

hi bmcn,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
It's possible that another component is causing the issue (eg. Memory)
To check, can you try to perform a clean boot and run these tests in normal mode (or in safe mode if applicable):

2. Lenovo Motherboard Bus Quick Test (64-bit)

Answer:Installed most recent Windows update; display no longer works except in safe mode

Hi Rachel and welcome to TSF

You didn't say, but I'm assuming that after the uninstalls the problem is still there.

Try doing a system restore to a time before the updates.

If you can boot in the safe mode and get video, then it must be something that is booting up in regular mode that is messing up the video. Before doing a re-install, look in the msconfig and see if something was installed there that might be the culprit. Under the start tab, the check boxes will let you selectively disable applications that install during normal boot. See if one of them is problematic. What each of those items do can be seen here:

Do you have any red or yellow marks in the Device Manager? That almost always means a device driver problem.

If you have to resort to a re-install of XP, I would suggest a Repair Install which will leave your normal applications and data in tact. Guidance for that can be seen here:

Hope this helps,

Having an issue with Java 6 update 21. I have a Win Vista Basic 32 bit, I've went through the basic steps, use javara to remove older versions of java, disabled firewall, virus protection, scanned for malware, etc. But for some reason, websites that utilize java applets will only load and function proper in safe mode. One example is Pogo, the games play great in safe mode with networking, but not in normal mode. Browsers are the latest explorer and firefox. In safe mode both browsers work fine with the java applet loading quickly, normal mode no such luck. Thought a software conflict might be the issue, but I am using the same software that I used when I had java 6 updates 18/19/20. I even tried removing all traces of java, reg keys, etc, and reinstalling java 18/19/20, nothing worked in normal mode, they all worked in safe mode. Could a reg key be missing? Answer:Solved: Java applets only working in safe mode with networking

There is no need to uninstall previous versions of Java before installing the new ones, anymore.

Try running both browsers without any Add-ons.

If no luck, try a Clean Boot procedure (2 pages). Do the same for Startup items and Services.

So my laptop only starts up in safe mode and when I try to access it through normal startup, a blue screen appears for a short amount of time and then attempts to startup again going on and on in a never ending cycle.

However, I got it running on safe mode and ran Malwaebytes Anti-Malware on safe mode (with networking). However, it didn't pick up anything wrong. What can I do to fix this???

Answer:Vista only starts in Safe Mode and blue screen appears in normal mode

I just did a clean re-install of Vista x64 on a new hard drive (old drive crashed). Here's the problem:

Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista).

Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it transfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky).

Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:

Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out.

This really the second clean install I've done in 24 hrs. After the first one, I upgraded and added a lot of software and add-ons before I figured out the connection problem; so I decided the easiest fix would be to re-format and start over, checking each step to see what caused the slow-down. Unfortunately once I did the second clean install I tested right away and I had the connection problem from the get-go. Since then... Read more

Answer:Vista x64 new install: Slow internet connection in normal mode; fast in safe mode

run msconfig and uncheck startups that you are POSITIVE are safe to do so. See if your speed picks up. Then allow one startup at a time.

Please, can somebody assist me. When I try to log into vista normal mode all I get is 'Please Wait' where the 'welcome' logo used to be and it just sits there saying "Please Wait . . . ." forever. When I could login to safe mode I enable the verbose command and restarted and tried normal mode again and it would say "Please wait for the Local Session Manager . . ." and never get past that screen. Now, for some reason, I cannot even log into any safe mode options. After the safe mode drivers load, the computer just hangs at crcdisk.sys after it's loaded and not proceed. So, then I tried to boot to the cd to use the repair utility and my computer won't even acknowledge it, it just takes to me the three safe mode options. In the past I could boot to the cd and use the repair disk and now I can't. Please don't tell me I am screwed. I have so much valuable info that I would really not want to lose. So if anybody can please help me to try and resolve this, I would be greatly appreciative. Thnx

Answer:Internet works in vista only in safe mode and not normal mode

My first suggestion would be to get into msconfig and uncheck as much as you can in the startup tab. See if you can then use IE or whichever browser you use. If it works, then slowly add items back until you find the culprit.

Ive been having this problem for a few days now, when I start the computer, after a few minutes,no matter what I am doing or if I am not doing anything,it will freeze, the mouse and keyboard wont work and the clock stops, the 2 little monitors that show my internet connection stop flashing too...sometimes,it freezes for a few seconds and then works, and the same thing happens over and over again until it finally freezes forever...other times,it just freezes once and stays there,Ive waited hours for it to work and nothing...

the only solution is to shut down using the button, and I know that is not a good thing to do..I did a system restore,I restored it to a day before the problem started, but when it restarted to finish the restore it froze again and the restore wasnt completed,I had to shut it down pressing the button and I realized later that I lost all the restore points I had...

I put in the new hard drive and completely installed windows but it still freezes at load up, I did get it to start a couple times but the CPU would peg at 100% and would freeze up after about 20 seconds. It will however start and run in safe mode.

The only changes I have made recently was installing some adobe products, I am currently unable to uninstall them completely. When attempting to boot normally the login screen appears and then the screen just goes black after a while to a flash of the blue screen and then restarts automatically. Any recommendations as to what I can do to work through this.

Answer:Vista boots up in safe mode but not in normal mode

The eventviwer (goto start then type eventvwr) system option would be giving a reason for the problem.
Most probably a driver update like display would be the problem.
Please do not try to delete any driver yourself as it may stop you from using the computer totally

you can go and try a system restore by restoring it to the date where you last remember all as working
System restore is accessible by clicking start and typing system restore.
There is no risk of loss of data when you run system restore(but avoid using a very old date as that will kill any new softwares installed)

Hello and thank you in advance for reviewing my support request.

My computer components are...
EVGA x58 SLI motherboard with Core i7
EVGA GeForce250
6gb Corsair Ram (3 sticks of DDR3)
750watt standard Powersupply from ULTRA
Hitachi 1TB 16Mb 7200rpm Sata hdd
Vista Ultimate 64-bit

My case...
After 3 months of no problems after building the computer from scratch. The power supply decides to blow up. Not literally blow up but there was a ton of toxic smoke and i did notice sparks flying out from the power supply. So i shipped it back for an exchange, and now i recieved my replacement and installed it. Everything seens fine until the Windows loading bar shows up. It seems to be taking forever which it did use to take only seconds to get past this. Then once the Windows Icon shows up and makes that classic Vista soundeffect, the screen turns to no-display-esk status and the motherboard seems to be hard at work (literally seems like its struggling to run something but it clicks, slows down, and restarts to struggle constantly) In an attempt to revi3ew the problem i turn off the comp, reset the cmos again, check all specs in setup, and try to run it in safe mode. Windows Vista 64 succesfully runs in safe mode... so i think it just needed to be reset, so i turn it back off and on again, and run normal mode... and the same no display with struggling system.
Note that this has everything to do with the powersupply getting fried and nothing with any other software or hard... Read more

I was experiencing problems with Windows Vista through Internet Explorer while trying to download and access video, and I kept getting the message that I did not have Java or Flash Player installed. I followed someone's recommendation that I should uninstall all instances of those from my computer and then re-install them. However, after removing them and then re-installing them through the Java and Flash Player websites, it still gives me the message that I do not have them when I try to download or access video, even though I see that they are installed and enabled on my computer. I assume that something is blocking them from being accessed or that I have checked or unchecked something by mistake that is creating the problem. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? I am a novice when it comes to computers, and your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Windows Script Manager can't find it because I blew it out of the godamn airlock!

He, he, he.

Short verison, my nephew was visiting for a few months earlier this summer. After he left, I discovered he downloaded and ran a lot of porn and IMVU on my computer plus other junk (can't remember what all he did, and he tried to delete some of it on his own; bottom line, I have no clue what all he did).

I tried to use the uninstall on everything and thougth I got it all, but then noticed that my CPU was constantly running. I opened task manager and found that java SE was constantly running, using up 25% of my CPU.

I tracked down what that was, using control panel and CCleaner startup tab. Tried to delete command strings etc. but that didn't work; it would just re-insert itself!

Found the .js file through a hard-drive search, then just deleted the whole damn thing.

Now everything on my system seems to be running fine. Java only runs when I want it to, nothing not accessable ... except ...

On every startup, I get the message from Windows Script Manager. I click the "ok" box for the notice and it goes away. Anoying the crud out of me.

See attached malware scan logs. I see it right there on the RogueKiller log, but the instructions said not to do anything but get the log, so I didn't try to "fix" it with that program.

Question: Safe Mode in Vista

I had a request from a friend to find out about safe mode in Vista. Im running windows vista in safe mode because when i run it in normal mode programs like ventrilo wont connect to servers. Its working out so far i dont mind running it like this, but how do i enable sound and a wallpaper and all that kinda stuff in safe mode?

Answer:Vista in safe mode HELP!

Hi Steve

Forget about working in Safe Mode, & get things working normally. Safe Mode is not in any way designed for everyday use: it's for troubleshooting and system maintenance.

Trying to run a program like Ventrilo in Safe Mode is just not a good idea. Not sure that I'd recommend a program that doesn't officially support Vista either. But it can be made to work, with Vista booted normally. If there are specific games that you'd like to get Ventrilo working with, visit their forums for specialized tips for each game. For general setup, it helps to have the main executables set to "run as administrator" (it generally helps to right-click and select this when installing software not explicitly written to be compatible with Vista --- select "run as administrator" for the installer, too).

Other hurdles are getting your firewall settings squared away - but that's fairly basic stuff. I would imagine the connection issues you mention are related to firewall setup. Check out the help files if you are using the built-in Windows Firewall --- it's fairly simple to set up exclusions for traffic to be unblocked for certain sites and servers. (I'll assume the trouble was in your firewall setup, and not in the setup for a hardware firewall in either a router or a gateway device with a router built-in = because you were able to connect from "Safe Mode with Networking"). If you've a third-party firewall, refer to the manual for guidan... Read more

Answer:vista safe mode

Hi -

To boot into safemode, tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up.

Remove both Trend Micro & Norton or your friend will be stuck in safemode forever. Use the respective removal tools.

Trend Micro (use PCCTool.exe method) -

Norton -

Download both to the desktop. Then 1 at a time - RIGHT-click on the icon, select "run as administrator". Then re-boot. Now do the same for the other.

Re-boot again. Then reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply, OK

Since Internet a problem, reset Internet Explorer -
START | inetcpl.cpl | Advanced tab | reset

Boot into normal Vista and have your friend come in to explain the rest of his/her problems.

Regards. . .

I've had the Vista RC1 installed on my second hard drive for some time now and it's been working great along side with Xp on my main hard drive. Now for some reason Xp has become a mess and because the boot utility only allows for safe mode in Vista I was wondering if there was a way to run Xp in safe mode. Any solutions?

*When I try and run Xp it freezes at the log-in screen for a long time, then allows me to enter my user name password then says "to continue you must authenticate your Windows version" even though my Windows version has already been authenticated. After doing that it goes to my desktop but without any toolbar at the bottom of the screen and no icons.

Any ideas/solutions would be appreciated!

I have a rather sick Lenovo R61 running Vista Business 32 SP1.

It will only boot in restricted mode.

When a normal start up is run, it shows the moving bar whilst loading, then everything goes dead.

All lights out even with the power cord plugged in.

The only way to get the power light lit is to unplug the power cord and plug it back in again.

I have unflagged all the entries in the start up which leave only Vista drivers to load.

This means that the failure to boot normally is one of the Vista drivers etc. which restricted mode does not load, but which normal boot does.

The last file loaded in the NTBTLOG.TXT is the MONITOR.SYS

I am trying to fire up the missing Vista drivers etc. one by one in safe mode.

Am I investigating this the correct way, and if so, how do I do it?

Help appreciated.

Answer:Vista Safe Mode only question.

Give clean boot a try, if it works we will have a better lead.
We may be able to indetify the process that is causing the problem
If this is what you mean by restricted mode post back

If that does not work it is indeed a driver.
Post back if clean boot does not work

Go to device manager and look for any yellow markers, showing bad drivers

Repair Install For Vista[11]=Performance Maintenance

You may be able to correct the problem with a repair install

See if you can do an SFC check in safe mode

System Files - SFC Command

When you press f-8 and are in safe mode
See if you can go into System Restore
That should fix the problem

I am not sure what you mean by restricted mode. It may be either safe mode or clean boot.

I am trying to repair a friends laptop that is running Vista. Every time it boots up it goes straight to safe mode. That is fine except I do not have a Vista disk and any program I try to remove the virus or trojan will not operate in safe mode. Got any ideas?

Hello. My gradnson's pc Dell desktop will only run in safe mode

he has done a diagnostics and can not repair anything via diagnostics.

I think he is having problems because he let his antivirus expire, but wanted to do everything to rule out any other technical problems before installing new antivirus.

Or should we install antivirus before we do anything else such as system repair, clean install, etc.?

Thanks for your help

I've seen that there's a million similar problems out there, but I can't get any of those fixes to work.

Back in Feb I installed a new HP printer on my HP Pavilion desktop. About a month later windows automatically updated. A few weeks after that Windows randomly shut down and would only restart in Safe mode.

I was away on business for a month or so, but my wife could not get the computer to start normally. She turned the computer off and it set dormant for a few weeks.

When I got home I turned on the computer and everything booted up normally. I took that chance to back up all my important files on an external hard drive, but then about 3 hours into operating normally it shut down and would only boot in safe mode. I tried several fixes to no avail and then just gave up.

A few weeks later I tried again and sure enough the computer booted normally, let me run Vista for a few hours, then locked up, shut down, and refused to boot in anything but Safe Mode.

I tried system restores, but at the end of the process I get some error about not being able to complete the restore. I've run start-up repair about a half dozen times with no luck. I've tried going into msconfig in safe mode, but there are no check boxes when the window opens.

What the heck is going on with my computer??? Can anyone offer any help? The computer did not come with a recovery CD or the original Vista CD.

Hello Hokie, welcome to Vista Forums!

Let's try the easiest first; have a look at and run the command listed in the tutorial at the link below, if it comes up with errors run it several times until it finishes error free; be sure to post back with the outcome; if that doesn't sort it we'll start discussing the removal of that HP printer driver as a test.

I searched and didn't find anything helpful.

I have a Toshiba Tecra A10-S3501 with Vista Business. I was having spontaneous wifi drops, and the "N" key kept pressing even when I wasn't near the computer. Booting in safe mode stopped the "N" key issue which means it is not a hardware problem(good to know).

Now, when booting windows normally, I can get past the login screen, but after about 20-30 seconds of my desktop, I get a memory dump screen and the laptop reboots.
-I Have not changed any hardware, nor drivers and nothing is connected via USB.
-Malware scans show nothing.
-Check Disk will not run properly.
-Issue is with any user that logs in locally or to the domain with this laptop.

My solution is to backup from safe mode, and do a fresh install(maybe XP). Any other ideas?

Please explain in detail what you mean by this ... what you have done and what resulted in your conclusion, including full details of any messages presented.

You can boot into Safe Mode and that works OK. In that case do as DomLuc suggested. Please post back here with full details of the error message you see on the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). If one restore point does not work, try another. Pick restore dates before the issues first appeared. Hopefully that will fix your booting problem as well as the other problems.

That has just GOT to be a good idea! And wait for Windows 7 .... ??? Could be a little premature to follow through with at this stage.

He is stumped and not sure what to do. Any help?

My girlfriend's sister gave her a Toshiba P205D-S7438 free since it "doesn't work". Now I'm no genius but I've fixed a few computers in my day... ;) All I can get is safe mode. Tried some system restore points but didn't have any luck. They completed successfully and everything just didn't change it's boot-up process like I'd hoped. Don't have a Vista disk so that's kind of out of the question at this point. Anything else I can take a look at? How do I see the boot as it's happening? It's getting stuck at the black screen with the cursor, right after the little green bar goes across for a while... Thanks all!

After getting rid of a rootkit with Hitman Pro, Vista will shutdown & reboot when it gets to the log in screen. I can hit F8 & can boot into any of the safe mode choices.
I have tried start up repair (no problems found), I've tried system restore to several different restore points, I've tried chkdsk & nothing.
I wanted to try a repair install, like you used to be able to do in XP, but hear you can only do that by way of an inplace upgrade, but it won't work in safe mode!
I really don't want to wipe & re-install - any other suggestions or options?

Answer:Vista can only boot in safe mode...

Greetings, mikey117, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

Try this: boot into Safe Mode and run msconfig. Open the 'Startup' tab and disable all non-Microsoft related items. Use common sense here: if something looks like it's vital, leave it alone - but if it's obviously unnecessary disable it. For example: antivirus software is not necessary for to run Windows but you'll want to disconnect from the internet if you do disable your protection.

Apply the changes, ok out and reboot into Normal mode. If a normal boot is then successful then you can selectively re-enable the Startup items until you find the culprit. If not then it's a pretty good indicator that something is amiss Windows-wise.

I ran MBAM, SAS and tdsskiller and quarantined what was found. After I rebooted I got the BSOD after the "welcome" screen. I rebooted in Safe Mode and everything ran fine. I ran MBAM, SAS and tdsskiller again and nothing was found, I rebooted again and got the BSOD again in normal mode.

64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium. This only happens in Safe Mode, not in Normal Mode.

I was following a guide a few days ago and was in Safe Mode with Networking. It called to download a file while in safe mode and I attempted to do so, only to find that it wasn't where I saved it... it wasn't anywhere. I opened up a folder with the location I was attempting to save it to, and attempted the download again - I saw the file as it was downloading, but the second it finished it disappeared. The file itself was Spybot S&D (which I got directly from the website.)

I'm rather unfamiliar with Vista, so I'm wondering if someone can tell me if this is normal Vista behavior?

If it is normal, are the files immediately deleted, or moved somewhere? I tried a search but it didn't come up...

I'm having yet another problem with my new Asus N80 laptop. The second one today! I tried getting on it a couple of hours ago but instead of booting Vista it took me to a blue screen that said it was performing a memory dump and it gives me suggestions but all I can remember is it telling me to do something in safe mode. Then it restarts, tries to reboot Vista again but just shows me the blue screen yet again. Sometimes it asks if I wanted to boot into safe mode, normal, or whatever. If click normal, or last good conf. it just goes to the blue screen and then starts over. When I choose safe mode, it loads all the core files and what not but instead of entering safe mode it restarts the computer. WHAT DO I DO?!!!

Hello again,
It's been some time since my wife's computer was last infected, and the help I received here was great.
I need your help again.
Yesterday the computer would not load. I couldn't get past the Microsoft load bar.
After several attempts I finally got into safe mode. I started to run Malwarebytes (full scan) and after about 10 minutes of scanning everything went blank. Several more attempts and I got safe mode back. I ran MB Chamelion and again, after a few minutes everything died again.
The System restore discs won't completely load. There is a message that says "loading files" for disc 1 but then everything goes black again.
Today I tried Knoppix. The initial screen showed, it started to load but then stopped. Tried this several times with no luck
I also tried Seatools (several times) but it did not load. Same with Optimumboot CD.
Now I can't even get into safe mode.
The F2 key worked once but did not let me choose any options before going blank.
So is it hard drive failure or time to go to Best Buy?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

hi,,,, has it always done this or has it just started to do it,,,, also have you installed anything ,,, programs/updates just before this started ???
when its booted in safe,,,, type msconfig into start menu search box and see if its set to force safe boot,,
in the system config utility click on the boot tab and look in the boot section and make sure there is no tick in "safe boot" ,,,, then click on general tab and make sure the normal startup or selected startup are marked
also while in there click on the tools tab in the box click on event viewer and click on the launch tab below and see if there's any info in critical and error sections,,, could shed some light on it,,,

I had some severe issues with a working Vista 64 installation today. Wouldn't boot, told me no system restore points (they were there yesterday), kept getting BSDs when I tried to boot from Vista disk.

Ultimately I reformatted my C drive and reinstalled Vista. Had a few other minor issues (a BSD when I restarted after reinstall) but finally got it running. Then I tried to install Norton 360 (free from my ISP Comcast). It worked well prior to today, but as soon as it started to install I got the BSD. Three times. Uninstalled.

Now having connect problems. I can connect in safe mode, but not in regular mode. I am thus not able to run windows update. I've tried IP release and renew, connect to network, etc. Part of the issue may be a stalled install of Cisco's Network Magic Pro. In safe mode I can't start the Platform Service. In regular mode I can't connect to the internet, so the install won't proceed.

Another oddity is that safe mode will only display in 800X600. Monitor is 1920x1200. Could have sworn that I used to be able to view higher resolution in safe mode, but changing it and clicking apply does nothing.

Any help you can render would be most helpful.

A few weeks ago, my HP notebook stopped booting all together. I think it happened after allowing it to download some windows updates. It won't get past the black microsoft screen with the frozen green traveling bar. I can boot in normal or any of the safe modes, last system config, etc. or run startup repair. When booting, stops at crcdsk.sys. I ran a hard drive test and it checked out OK.

After doing some searching in the forums and consulting with a few HP chat support reps, I ordered and received an OEM recovery disc. I changed my boot order to boot from the OEM recovery disc first, saved the setting, and turned the computer on to run the disc. The disc seems to have no effect. I still can't get it past the black screen with microsoft and the frozen green traveling bar. Any other suggestions PLEASE?!

Answer:Can't Boot Vista Or In Safe Mode

Has Startup Repair completed successfully - or did it report that it was unable to repair any problems? In which kind of boot (Safe/Normal mode) does it stop at crcdsk.sys?

When the first HP screen comes up when first booting the computer, press the "Esc" key. That should get you to a boot menu where you can force the system to boot from the OEM Recovery disk. What happens when you try that?

How is it possible, having this PC for almost 3 years, that all of a sudden, 2 weeks ago, everything freezes, no mouse, no keyboard input and monitor screen is frozen. Up until then, I did not add any new hardware or software.
I have to hit power button to shut down. I try a normal start, get message to run startup repair, then it says run system restore and that gets me nowhere.

I then restart and was able to get into safe mode. event viewer shows, consumer ir devices can't find driver and ehome infrared receiver can't find driver.

I open device manager and it show yellow exclamation next to both of these devices. I attempt, update driver and says driver current.

Been going crazy with this problem, have done Google searches and get different responses, both NO response that fixes this problem.

I have a older Vista Home Prem. system that will not boot in any of: Regulat, safe mode, last known good, etc. In a regular boot it flashes the Windows progress bar and then shuts down (monitor losses signal). In Safe Mode it will start and then stops after displaying the load of system32\SI.dll.

I have booted from the install DVD in Repair mode > Command prompt: From there I have run chkdsk /f /r, bootrec to replace the MBR, sfc /scannow, which reports no issues. I have removed the HD and placed it in another system. From there ran a barrage of AV and malware programs, that removed a few things, mostly adware and PUPs.

If I let the Automatic recovery tool run it reports back "Startup can not repair this computer automatically".

I tried to locate SI.dll in windows\system32 and it does not appear to be present, although in Safe Mode the last line displayed is \windows\system32\SI.dll before it powers down.

The system does not have any Restore Points to use.

While mounted externally there is no problem in accessing all folders and files.

Just before all of this boot problem surfaced there was an issue with Windows Explorer stopping (all desktop icons and task bar disappeared) if I even rolled the mouse over the Send To option in he context menu of any folder or file on the desktop. I was about to remove some of the context menu options that had been added by oher installs when the boot issue arose.

Any ideas what to try next?

Hi All,
My girlfriend's Dell Inspiron e1405 running Vista has randomly encountered a perplexing problem. Any attempt to boot into windows, even in safe mode, causes:

a cmd.exe box to load labeled "C:\windows\system32\logonui.exe" to open in the background, and in the foreground, an error box with the title "16 bit MS-DOS subsystem". In this box it says "C:\Windows\system32\logonUI.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. Cs:ef00 IP:11c1 OP: ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'close' to terminated the application"

Hitting close or ignore does not work. The box closes and a blank screen remains, while the harddrive light remains active.

There have been no new programs installed, nor have any attachments/other virus entry means been opened. The computer has had up-to-date anti virus software (up to date definitions) running at all times.

I have tried the following: Via F8 at start up, running memory test, running "check for startup errors", "use last known good configuration", system restore, safe mode. None of these things seem to do the trick. I am at a loss as to what to do, and of course, she has not backed up her computer despite having a brand new external drive on which to do so. If I could just log in to back up her stuff and then restore windows that would be cool, though I would sure love to know why this happened in the first place.

Just thinking that you dont have all the drivers installed, and main one maybe Chipset, so goto ASUS Support and download and install your Chipset driver and then reboot and try.

Also as you just re-installed, what other applications have you installed, I'm more thinking of ones that will startup with the PC as in security software etc? what you could try is to enter msconfig and its startup tab and untick everything then start your PC in normal mode, does it work ok? if so one of those startups is the cause, tick one at a time and reboot to find which one, then check for updates to that application or uninstall and look for alternative.

I pressed F8 once my system starts up in order to run vista (64-bit) in safe mode. However it is still windows I get instead of safe mode.

Any advice? Thanks.

Answer:UNable to run safe mode in 64 bit vista

Welcome to TSG!

If you hit F8 too soon, or too late, you won't get the Startup menu where you can choose Safe Mode.

Best bet is to start tapping the F8 key after you power on until the menu appears.

You can use msconfig to force the next boot to be into Safe Mode. One problem with that is if your system fails to boot into Safe Mode, you have no way to undo the setting.

You can add a Dafe Mode entry to the Boot Menu that will appear on every boot so you can easily choose Safe Mode when needed:
Open an elevated command prompt (Click Start, type cmd, press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER)
Click Start, type msconfig, press Enter
Click the Boot tab
Check the Safe Boot box
Click Apply
Switch to the Command Prompt
type the following:
bcdedit /copy {current} /D "Vista Safe Mode"
Switch back to msconfig
Check the Network radio button
Click Apply
Switch to the Command Prompt
type the following:
bcdedit /copy {current} /D "Vista Safe Mode w/Network"
Switch back to msconfig
Uncheck Safe Boot
Click OK, but Do Not Reboot if prompted
Switch to the Command Prompt
Type SystemPropertiesAdvanced
Click the Settings... button under Startup and Recovery
Adjust the Time to display list of operating systems scroll box as desired (I use 5 seconds)
Click OK, click OK, and now Reboot

You'll now have two additional entries on the boot menu.

I've run malware bytes andit found alot of stuff though im not sure if it deleted it since it still doesnt boot up.

This computer had no real antivirus until i tried to install Avast and malwarebytes...and the updates were never done so about 2 days ago she decided to install firefox and when she did, she let all the updates that were pending which were alot as well as some random bloatware programs updated. After this the problem occured... please any tips would help.

I've tried restoring in safe mode and it fails after restarting...i dont see anther option other than using the recovery partition to start fresh... though there is one program on there that she needs to study in the next couple of days so that wouldnt exactly ideal.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Vista, will only boot up on safe mode.

It appears that I was struck with the Vista internet security 2012 virus. I kept getting pop ups and web site redirects until I was no longer able to do anything. I had made numerous attempts to run in safe mode without success.
The laptop boots into a windows user and password page, I've tried my admin username and password without any success.

I've tried a number of rescue disks and no luck.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
