I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: toshiba satellite c660 black screen on xp

Hi mw_86 and welcome to TSG.

Have you tried an external Monitor ? I would do that first if possible and if it's display is good carry on below.

With those symptoms if that model has an Inverter I would try switching it with a known working one.
You should find some on Ebay. (I've had good luck even with used ones).

If it does have an Inverter it could be the backlight instead but that's usually much more difficult to replace.

If it's an LED model (ie no Inverter or Backlight) I would guess either the LEDs have failed or they aren't getting power from the motherboard.

I bought a VGA cable to connect my laptop to my TV in order to mirror what ever is on my laptop screen. My TV did not pick up anything when I checked the Sources.

I opened the "Action Centre" on my laptop and selected "Project". I changed the current setting of "Duplicate" to "Second Screen Only", this caused my laptop screen to go black when the VGA cable was connected. When I disconnected the VGA cable my laptop screen came back on. This frustrating because I want to change it back to "Duplicate" but it is impossible to navigate while the VGA cable is plugged in because of the black screen.

note that when i changed it to "second Screen Only" my TV still did not pick up my laptop.

any solution for this?

Hello all,

Yesterday all of a sudden, the laptop screen went blank. Upon turning it on several times, the screen still doesn't turn on. By connecting the monitor to a external monitor via VGA (my TV), the TV does show up the screen, but has several flickering horizontal lines showing, thus obscuring part of the screen (http://i.imgur.com/83RO8xg.jpg - ignore the windows behind, I was testing the sound - and it works).

I have tried several solutions on the web (like removing the battery and AC cable and pressing the power button, and interchanging the RAM card in the slots), and not surprisingly, nothing worked as I think my problem is not similar. Windows 10 just boots to a blue screen with a sad face and a QR code (I don't even know...), while Linux Mint does boot and gives a message of "running without hardware acceleration". I couldn't get any diagnosis on Linux to check if it's a problem on the graphic card or the motherboard, so I am turning to these forums to check if anyone had any similar problem.

Thank you.

When i turn on my laptop, C660, the screen is black. It is the same when i try with an external screen?

It is a brand new laptop - only benn used a few times.

Answer:Black screen on Satellite C660

Remove battery and disconnect the AC adaptor.
Now press and hold power button 30sec long?
After that connect both parts again and try to power up the unit.

If this does not help, get in contact with Toshiba ASP in your country to check the hardware? if the notebook is new, the warranty should cover the repair

Hi guys,

I had this morning a problem with my toshibate c660, my screen was black and not reacting when turning on the computer.
However my computer still turned on and you could see the led light lighting on and hearing the computer starting.

Now I fixed the black screen by a tutorial, the tutorial goes like this:

'First turn your computer off by pressing and holding down the start button. Next unplug the computer and then remove the battery. Press and hold down the start button for about 60 seconds.
Release the button and plug in the computer. Press the start button and the display should return. Replace the battery. If this does not work, try it again up to four times. No results usually indicates a bad mother board. Hope this helps.'

I did it 4 times because the first 3 times it didnt work, and too my surprise the 4th time worked.

Q: Can someone explain why this works?
I hold the start button when their was no battery in the computer and it wasnt plugged in. I just cant understand this works when the computer isnt under power.

Gr

Someone with insight care to explain?
I almost think voodoo is real :))

Answer:Re: Satellite C660 - black screen

It?s not easy to say why the issue appeared.

But as far as I know such ?black screen? problems can be related to memory issues as well as to power failure.

Anyway, it?s very important that the workaround described in your posting worked properly.

The same power issue happened to me some month ago? and the same workaround was helpful to get the notebook working again?.

Answer:Disk error and black screen on Satellite c660-21z

Hi

It looks like an problem with HDD.
Please check if the HDD is recognized in BIOS. Power up the unit and press F2.
Usually this should help to access the BIOS.
At the first BIOS page the HDD should be mentioned? is it?
If not then this means that HDD is dead and needs to be replaced?

By the way: you did not post the notebook model? but if it?s 3 weeks old, then you have to get in contact with an Toshiba service if the HDD would be faulty? you should get a new one free of charge because the warranty should be valid.

Hi everybody,

I have a Toshiba Satellite C660-10T Laptop and have recently purchased an additional 2GB RAM to upgrade my laptop to 4GB in total. The RAM stick is identical to the original 2GB ram that came installed in the laptop.

I have added the extra ram and when i turn on the laptop the screen remains black however the laptop fans can be heard etc. When i remove the added ram the com starts up fine and shows the windows login on screen. I have also tried both ram sticks on their own in slot 1 and they both work fine, its only when they are both in the connectors that i get the black screen.

Any help asap would be fantastic.

Regards

Griff

Its a problem with your additional RAM module.
Either its not fully compatible.
Recommend using two identical RAM modules from Kingston? such modules are great, tested and provide good quality.

So this morning after trying to power up my Toshiba Satellite C660/C660D I was met with a black screen.

The power lights both work and light up, the fans whirl when I power up but nothing ever comes up on the screen, I was wondering if anyone could help here?

It's less than 3 months old.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D will not boot up (black screen)

To be honest I really don?t know how to help you.
Remove battery, leave notebook for a while and try to start notebook with AC power supply only. Try to do it several times with and without battery. If nothing helps there must be some hardware problem so I recommend you to contact Toshiba service and ask for help.

Warranty is valid so there is no reason to be worried about it.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - shift key causes the screen to go black

Hi

> I am disappointed to see the shift key (left) as well as the CTRL key causing the screen to go black intermittently when typing my blog...

What does this means exactly? Pressing SHIFT and CTRL button disable the display and you are not able to see anything on the monitor?
Is this right?

Did you check if this happens using an external USB keyboard too?
If not, I would assume that your keyboard malfunctions and needs to be replaced.

A friend of mine has had a issue with my keyboard. The cursor jumped around and some characters were displayed twice? this could be solved by BIOS update?I?m not sure if your notebook uses the latest BIOS but you could check this too.

First of all hi first post. I have 2 satellite laptops 1 C660 daughters crashed a while a go so she started using mine. Mine C665D now has broken screen can see some of screen. Decided to first try screen swap no go different connectors so swapped hardy rive from 665 to 660 and did clean install win7 pro. Was looking good but had no network driver. Not having another pc only iPads makes it a bit difficult to download driver so swapped Hardrive back download driver for 660 swapped again loaded driver all good working. Reading advice said to update all driver. Started at the top of Toshiba driver page and did bios update. Crash! During install of bios "confuser" shutdown and now will not boot. Push power button both led come on fan starts then just shuts off. Did a little research and it appears the bios flash was not a good option a pity it was on the driver download page, won't happen again. I have tried starting without battery f2 etc but still shuts down. Any help would be appreciated as I am defiantly out of my depth now. Both laptop currently in pieces but I am getting pretty good at the pull down put back together thing, tempted to bin then both but will see if you guys can help.

cheers Blowen

Answer:Updated BIOS - now black screen on Satellite C660

A bit of an update might help others?
It would appear I need to ref lash the bios. From what I have been reading process as follows.
1 make a bootable usb ( at this step now)
2 download bios. I downloaded wi rear to be able to extract the files. there are 4 files as follows.
1 bios.ROM 4,356 k.b
2 BiosCheck 1 k.b (this is a notepad read me file)
3 ec.ROM. 128 k.b
4 Setup 1389 k.b
Not exactly sure which file to copy over at a guess I would say 1 but maybe all needed?

3 remove hard drive and optical drive
4 remove battery insert bootable usb apparently it is imperative that you hold down the F key kept it in then plug ac power on continue to hold the F button let go after a while ( not sure how long 30 seconds I will try) let F button go. If you have a usb with a light if it comes on it is working, wait until it stop restart system and hopefully you can now get into the rest of the system.
I have got my old Acer laptop out of the Closet fresh installed win 7 was running really slow so spen most of day sorting, was services using 100% cpu, Windows update turned this of and now pretty good to hopefully make bootable usb and put on bios to flash Toshiba.
Fell free to add if I have missed something.
Thanks

Sounds like not compatible or faulty module.
Can you boot the notebook properly using the old modules?
If yes, then the new memory should be replaced with another one.

Hi everybody.

I have a C660-22v.Everything was working fine. Then about an hour later, went to use the laptop again, switched it on, it powered up as normal with 2 clicks, then nothing. Just a black screen, not even lit up, then after 5-15 seconds, the fan speeds up for a second or 2 then the laptop switches off.

Tried it with the batteryout & just the charger pluged in, just the battery, holding the power button, all sorts of ways but it just switches off.

I`m thinking the hard drive has failed. Any help would be welcome as its out of warranty (around 16 months old).

Many thanks in advance,Neil.

Answer:Satellite C660 powers on, black screen and switches off

In my opinion it has nothing to do with hard drive. I presume there is some problem with power supply electronic. I have similar problem with my A300 and at the moment I don?t know what to do.
Repair is probably pretty expensive so I?m thinking to sell it on eBay as defective.

Problem is that we cannot do much about it. What to do? You can disassemble it, take a look inside and put it together again.

Either it works or not. I?m afraid your issue is for service and it should be checked by service guys.

Answer:Satellite C660/C6600 stays on a blank black screen

Hi

>My Satellite C660/C6600 is unable to load up and once it is turned on it goes directly to a blank black screen after the Toshiba screen.

Does this means that you can see the Toshiba Splash screen at the beginning at then the display becomes blank?
Can you see something on the external monitor? If you didn?t test this, please do that?

I don?t think that display is affected, since you can see the Toshiba splash screen?
Not sure about the GPU issue but I think if GPU would be affected, then the Toshiba splash screen would not be visible too. In your case it is?

Well, try also this workaround:
- Remove AC adaptor and battery
- Press power button 30 sec long
- Connect both parts and try to power up the unit.

You could also check if one of the memory modules might cause this?
In such case you need to remove one module and should test the notebook using one module in each slot?

Alright, so im not sure if this is software or hardware issue, but my satellite restarted for an update about a week ago and turned back on with a black screen. I tried taking the battery out, pressing the power button for 60 seconds, restarting it, starting in it safe mode, factory resetting it on startup. Nothing. Sometimes the fan will be running, then the machine stops. Sometimes it will just run and stay on the black screen. Sometimes it will start up and the power button wont even be lit, but the fans, and the led for caps lock will be on. Is it time for a new computer, or is there a way to fix this?

Hi everyone, I'm very sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I have a Toshiba Satellite L305 series laptop running windows vista home premium. Last week I got a blue screen that I didn't read in time so I don't know what it said, and then it shut down. I tried to restart it but only get to a black screen with a moveable white arrow. I tried using windows startup repair, it gives me a white bar at the bottem that says loading files then the windows copyright screen but then just does the same thing and goes back to the black screen. I've tried booting in safe mode, booting with last known good configuration, and system recovery. I've also tried using a recovery disc, that I had to buy from toshiba b/c I lost my disc in a move, to no avail just the same black screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW when I put the recovery disc in you can hear the disc spinning and the fans working until it gets to the windows copyright page then everything dies down and black screen time.

It sounds like a disk error or start-up error - take it back if it's still on warranty because you probably need to reformat (delete everything) and reinstall Windows.

Hi there, I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 and just today I've encountered a frustrating problem. Let's just get a few things out first.

I had intended to turn it off last night, but it didn't shut down. There was some message about a program still opened or something like that (not a big deal I thought as I had gotten it a few times before). I just clicked whatever it was that ended it or turned it off anyways. So today I come back to turn it on and it was on that message. I turn it off and come back later to turn it on. I noticed there was a black screen and I could not do anything. I hold the power button to turn it off and restart it. It loads the Toshiba/Phoenix screen fine. Then I get to the Windows Recovery screen. It gives me two options.

- Use the Windows Recovery thing to try to find and repair any errors
- Start Windows normally

I tried the first option a few times but it said there was an unspecified problem due possibly to some hardware configurations (did not do anything before). I restarted and pressed F2 and looked for anything that might have caused it and I exited without saving any changes (Toshiba/Phoenix thing) and then it led me to the screen with the Safe Mode and other options. I chose Safe Mode just to see and it led me to the log-in screen, but after that it would not let me see those same options again. Above computer turns on, battery is good, fan spins, but the hard drive does not spin. I hit ESC, F1, F-whatever to see if I can get it to boot into setup, nothing happens. I put a bootable diagnostics disk in the DVD/CD drive and it spins, but nothing happens on the screen. I hooked up a monitor to see if it was the screen, but the monitor doesn't receive a signal. So, I'm thinking it could be two or three bad things. Bad hard drive, but why wouldn't it boot into setup and why is there nothing on the screen? Bad motherboard? That would explain everything, I think. Bad CMOS? Any help with diagnostics here?

I have Toshiba Satellite M70, I need help and i will describe my problem:

- Few days ago my screen went black suddenly, i don't know how cause i was away from the laptop.
- Until yesterday, when i boot my laptop, it gives me black screen all the time but when i put him in standby mode by closing the notebook for few seconds and then i click the on button, my screen starts displaying fine until my next reboot and i start all over again ( i usually keep my notebook working almost 18 hours which means there's a lot of time to my next reboot)
- But Today, I booted too many times , it gives me black screen and the standby mode doesn't work anymore. But few times today when i was trying to boot, the screen displayed the Toshiba screen for only 1 second then gone black again.

P.S. You can see hardly threw the black screen everything if there is a sunlight facing the laptop.

Thank you in advance,
Best regards,
Mr. Mher Krikorian

This is very useful info?
I think the issue is related to the FL inverter?
The FL-inverter is a small part which controls the display backlight.
If this part starts to malfunction then you would see everything like behind a thick fog?

In my opinion the FL inverter should be checked and replaced if necessary?
For that you have to get in contact with an local service technician?

Greets & happy new year!

Hello,

My Toshiba Laptop is stuck at black screen after I was disassembling it. I was opening it because I accidently resetted the bios security settings to default. Suddenly the bios password box is opening while booting and wants a password. After searching the Internet I found out that my laptop wants the supervisor password which I don't own. Couldn't call Toshiba Support because I temporarily have no phone. So I decided to open the laptop to reset the CMOS. Removed the battery and fully disassembled the laptop till the motherboard was naked. Then I found the CMOS jumpers. But there where four of them and I couldn't find any instructions for four jumpers so I decided to close the device. After fully reassembling it I turned it on and the screen was all black. Only the white LED was on and the light round the power button. Tried many instructions from the Internet again but nothing works. Not even the USB ports seem okey cause when I insert a stick in all of them the lights for 'stick is working' are out (my USB sticks got LED's) Then I linked my laptop via HDMI to a friends TV. No signal. I'm crushed. Help me pls!!!!!!!!

OK first off I'm sorry that this ends up being my first post. I work in IT as my day job but I know more about the quirks of machines I've been dealing with for years. Anyway I have a friend with a Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176x and it will look like it's booting fine and then it shows nothing but a cursor and a black background. BEFORE any of you suggest anything please look over what I've done (listing in order)

1. Tried to boot in safe-mode (same thing)
2. Tried window 7 disk (wouldn't show anything besides black screen...so no system repair)
3. Tried to boot normally and the PC BSOD'd and then rebooted...then blank screen
4. removed HDD and put it in my laptop where it booted just fine (so not a software issue)
5. Looked for mini-dump to see if BSOD info was present...no such luck
5. since I had my HDD out anyway I put it in the toshiba to see what would happen, it black screen'd as well.
6. reset bios to default...nothing changed

At some point I saw an error mentioning a hardware failure but I don't remember when I saw it. More importantly if anyone has any other suggestions I'm willing to try them. I'm at a loss here

Answer:Toshiba Satellite always boots to a black screen

So you get the usual POST and then it just goes to the wonderful Black Hole of Death, right?

No other messages whatsoever.... but at least eliminated the inverter (backlight) as being toast since you did get POST.

Ideas:

Reseat the RAM and clean the contacts.

Clean the inside of the laptop out including all the fans + intakes of dust bunnies.

I'd remove the CPU heatsink and redo the thermal paste with Artic MX-4 (best available), same for the chipset's heatsink if applicable.

I would put in a trusty Linux Live CD (I use Linux Mint's) and of course set the bios to boot off the DVD drive and see if that WORKS or not. [If it can't handle that, then you know it's a shot motherboard, which is the likely scenario, since the video is integrated.]

Could check the voltage on the power supply with a multimeter, also, make sure it's not shot.

See where you are at after those things.....

sometimes when i power it on, itll give me the options of safe mode and all that. but when i choose to run normal, itll run normal for a second and then it will turn black. it has to be my internal hard drive right? if its displaying at all on my screen like options of safe mode, it stays on the whole time on safe mode. but turns black when i choose run normal

Answer:Black screen on my toshiba satellite latop

If Safe Mode continues to run without crashing or shutting down, there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. A faulty hard drive or motherboard would affect Safe Mode just the same as Normal Mode. When Safe Mode runs okay, but Normal Mode does not, it is usually caused by a bad or incompatible device driver that you've recently installed, or some incompatible software that you've recently installed of the types listed below:Third-party Firewall software.Antivirus software.CD/DVD burning software.Virtual CD software. If you can remember recently installing a driver or any of the above software types, uninstall it in Safe Mode. Then try starting Windows normally.

Hey, I have recently got a problem with my Toshiba laptop where after the "Toshiba leading inovation" screen shows, my laptop screen goes black.
I have manged to find out the problem is one of my hard drives, and I am asuming it is the C drive as the laptop cant start up. If anyone has any information about what may be wrong, ways to fix it, and the possible expenses involed in fixing it, can you please help me?

also.. what are the chanced I will lose my files ect. off the drive?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite A200 - After Toshiba screen the display does black

Hi

Normally after the Toshiba screen the notebook tries to boot from HDD.

It could be a HDD issue but I?m not sure. Have you checked the BIOS if the HDD is recognized properly?
What happens if you load the default settings in BIOS?
Did you test and external monitor?

Last but not least it would be interesting to know if you can boot from another device, for example CD/DVD drive.

It all began when i was using my laptop and the screen suddenly went black for no apparent reason. it didn't look the screen turned off because it was still lit up. The next day when i was booting up my computer the same thing happened, but it happened while i was booting up. So I held down the power button to shut down and turned it on again but this time nothing came up on the screen.I doubt it's a hardware issue as the screen sometimes shows up, even if i don't move the laptop an inch. But each time the screen still turns it self off. After some googling I found this post which was somewhat similar to my problem but im not too sure.Any help would be much appreciated

I just installed 4GB of matched Crucial memory (had 256MB). Everything was fine for about a day; left the computer running for about 1/2 hour and when I came back...black screen. Nothing. Finally had to shut down using the power button.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Operating system is XP with pack 3 installed.

Thanks,

Will the system boot properly if the new momory is removed and original memory inserted into system. Also what type memory did you installed (clock speed,SDRAM,etc)

The maximum amount for this particular model is 2GB referring to the Toshiba website.

Press and hold the power button - does it turn off and on again ?
if so do three times in quick succession - this should trigger the repair your computer screen - select start up repair - see if this solves the problem.
If you can't get to that point do you have a windows DVD?

hello,

I am having a very annoying issue with my toshiba satellite L755-S5216. It boots up fine but sometimes while im doing work on the computer(just normal schoolwork and such) the screen will go black with a redish line that flickers on the left side of the screen. The only way to fix it is to do a shutdown holding the power button. Is there anyway to fix this...or is it just the inverter that i have read on a few posts on this site?

Thanks

Try an external monitor on it as first step.If you never ever see anything at all on the screen then it is almost certainly a hardware fault but what happens on the external will tell us more. Also let us know whether the computer "appears to start" or not (lights, fan sounds etc).Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello! After going into hibernation mode, Toshiba Satellite A505-s69803 no longer boots, only slightly powers up and has a black screen with no cursor.

Have tried unplugging power adapter and removing battery, holding power button down for over 60 seconds, then re-plugging in adapter and attempting to boot up. Power button lights up, fan starts, cd/dvd player clicks, then just black screen. No beeps, no messages or errors on screen. Power indicator and adapter indicator below keyboard light up faintly white. Battery indicator goes orange momentarily if I put the battery back in.

Can anyone help wih ideas or resolutions? Would really like to try to bring this machine back to life to get some recent non-backed up photos and other data off it.

Thank you!!

Hi,
I have a toshiba satellite a70 and i am having the following problem. When the laptop shuts down or even restarts, on the screen where the bios appears, it is black. Let me see if i can clarify. The computer turns on or restarts but the screen is black. I can hear the fans come on, all of the indication lights are on, but the screen remains black. I thought that it might be an LCD hardware prob, so I waited 10 min to see if i can at least here it logging into windows, I even connected it to a seperate monitor. Nothing happens. Here's the kicker. If I were to shut down the laptop and then remove the power cable from the back of the laptop and then turn it back on, it would work fine. It seems as though the computer is not shutting down properly?

My daughter's laptop keeps freezing; I have used the internal `Repair' to set it back to the factory settings, but it is still the same. I have been told that it is a common symptom of a faulty hard drive, for which I was quoted approx £170.00 to replace and install the operating system. I am not a computer technician, but as I was a tv engineer, so feel that fitting a new HDD is within my capabilities, and as a replacement HDD from Toshiba is £80, this seems the logical thing to do; however before I buy a new HDD, can anyone tell me if it is correct that the freezing may be the result of it failing? I would just like the opinion of other people with computer knowledge before I spend my money, and I will not blame anyone if I choose to follow their advice and it doesn't cure the problem.
Any advice would be very welcome.

PSU voltages (not applicable to laptops)

faulty memory stick try memtest click here virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use
driver conflicts especially graphics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment.

You can run a check on the drive. In explorer right click the drive select properties - Tools tab - check drive.
It may also freeze if there are a lot of windows open at the same time and cpu is at 100%
Or if there is not much spare space on the drive.
Model of toshiba laptop? Most hard drives ae easy to change as located under a cover on the base , some are harder to get at as may be under the keyboard. We can probably find a Youtube video or strip down instruction easy enough.
If it really is the drive then you an image the whole drive to an external drive using the free Macrium reflect make the rescue media from the same program - fit a new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5109

A month ago was having issues with infinite start up loop after bad updates install. Couldn't even get into the command prompt for a while but then was able to and followed the "How to Recover from an Infinite Looping Startup Repair Loop without Reinstalling Windows" guide that I found on here and it worked. Got all of my personal files off then after a couple weeks decided to do a factory reset because it was starting to run slow at times.

Two nights ago had more updates from Windows and when I turned it on it said something didn't download correctly. It did a disk check and then was fine except ran slow when it booted up for a few minutes. Today when turning it on it gives options of running StartUp Repair which does the Windows loading files screen then goes to a black screen with the cursor icon. Also gives the Start Windows Normally option which gets stuck on the opening Windows icon and never moves.

All F8 options end up with black screen with cursor and the kicker is that I attempted factory reset twice now and it goes to a black screen with cursor as well. I don't have a recovery disk or any other Windows media.

Is there anything else I can try (tried taking the battery out too and holding down power button) or is this laptop toast? Thanks and let me know if you need any other system specs.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite - black screen of death and can't even factory reset

I would say that you have a disk problem.
If you do have a Win (7, 8 or 10) installation disk, boot with it, go to repair, launch command prompt and then type chkdsk C: /f.

Hi. I'm basic computer user posting on behalf of my grandad who lives several hours away. I've been trying to help him by phone but no success so far.

He has Toshiba Satellite L350D running Windows 7. For several days he's met black screen on startup. He's tried a few online suggestions (that I found via Google) that didn't help (hold power 30 secs, hold power 60 secs, remove battery, external monitor, several function keys). A couple of times he found tapping f11 during startup enabled him to use laptop, but that way has since failed to work.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi phant0m2012,

have you tried right clicking on the driver with a yellow triangle and select update this driver?

Normally there shouldn't be this kind of a problem on a newly installed system, or at least the computers I've installed this problem always appears later on.

Here is the latest lan driver for your laptop: support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/lan-20101130110923.zip

Do you have another computer where you could download and then move it over to your current one?

Hi Tech Guys,
I have a friends laptop that I am trying to fix, their laptop HDD is failing which has been confirmed by Crystalmark and the Toshiba HDD/SDD monitor tool. I have a spare HDD lieing around which I would like to replace it with but I want to clone/backup the files first. I tried using acronis clone image but when I place the HDD in the laptop it does not recognise the new HDD, could it be due to the fact that the HDD has to be a OEM HDD set as the OS drive? I'm stuck as the laptop will not allow me to use my external HDD to backup the files manually. Not sure what to do next even tried to backup the files via my network using easy to transfer tool but it cannot find my PC please help thanks.

Answer:Solved: Toshiba Satellite C660-18C - HDD failure

When you clone with acronis, there are some things you need to do;
1 Boot the system using an acronis boot CD/flash drive. I always recommend doing a clone, image, etc from the boot disk rather than from within windows. It just removes one more layer of complexity from the task.
2 The new hard drive must be blank ie no partition info on the drive at all. You may need to zero fill the drive IF it was previously used.
3 Select source [old drive] and destination [new drive]
4 Complete the clone process and shutdown. DO NOT reboot with both drives connected.
5 Swap hd and pw ON. Make sure drive letters are correct, system boots without errors, etc.

Since this is a laptop, I would do the clone with A/C pw connected. Once finished with the clone, shutdown and remove both A/C and battery prior to swapping drives. Modern systems apply pw even when OFF so you want to be sure there is no pw applied when you are swapping drives or working on the system. Most [if not all] of the time, swapping drives in a laptop with the battery installed would not hurt anything however completely removing pw prior to working on the system is a VERY good habit to get into.

Adobe After Effects always crash on startup.
It says it cannot initialize OpenGL and that I should contact the manufacturer of the Graphics adapter.

So I contact Intel because I got a Intel Hd Graphics adapter but they say the driver I already have is custom tuned for Toshiba. So I search on Toshiba but cannot really find any useful link.

Should I install OpenGL manually or can I disable it somehow without starting After Effect?
How do I installOpenGl manually?

I have downloaded the latest Graphics adapter driver from you but it doesn't help.
All I want to do is to start a popular Adobe product so I believe many people have this problem.

Answer:OpenGL driver for Toshiba Satellite C660-1J2 ?

Hi

OpenGL is a standard API for writing software for 2D or 3D computer graphics.
OpenGL is an open source product but DirectX is released by Microsoft and mostly DirectX is part of the graphic card driver and not OpenGL.

However, you cannot ?download and install? OpenGL to use it within the graphic card driver? the OpenGL needs to be implemented in the driver?

Mostly it?s done by graphic card manufacture.
Therefore you will need to check the Intel page to get an driver from Intel which supports OpenGL because the notebook supports the Intel (HM55) HD graphics.

This link detects which driver updates are relevant to your computer and then helps you install them quickly and easily.

Hello There,

I recently purchased a Satellite C660/C660D everything is fine, apart from one or two minor issues (which this thread is about). Firstly, The laptop was and still is littered with loads of TOSHIBA random software, below is a list:

+TOSHIBA Assist+
+TOSHIBA Bulletin Board+
+TOSHIBA ConfigFree+
+TOSHIBA Disc Creator+
+TOSHIBA Face Recognition+
+TOSHIBA Flash Cards Support Utility+
+TOSHIBA Hardware Setup+
+TOSHIBA HDD/SSD Alert+
+TOSHIBA Media Controller+
+TOSHIBA Media Controller Plug-in+
+TOSHIBA Online Product Information+
+TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator+
+TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator Reminder+
+TOSHIBA ReelTime+
+TOSHIBA Service Station+
+TOSHIBA Supervisor Password+
+Toshiba TEMPRO+
+TOSHIBA Value Added Package+
+TOSHIBA Web Camera Application+

Is there a pre made ISO recovery image somewhere or do I have to make my own, because if I decide to unisntall some of these programs I might need it at a later date?

The second issue is with the TOSHIBA Accessiblity application which shows the FN keys, it does not seem to start. It worked the first day then I disabled all TOSHIBA applications from startup and I get the following error: "Registry is missing or may be broken.", I dont know why!

I have tried cleaning the registry, so the registry isnt broken.

*Thanks in Advance*

<h2>-Humza</h2>

Answer:Satellite C660 - TOSHIBA Accessibility Error

Hi Humza,

I?m happy to hear that you?re an owner of Toshiba notebook too and you discovered the forum here. We can discuss everything about Toshiba notebooks, that?s interesting :)

I will try to help you to sort this out:

1.Yes, there is a premade recovery image to restore factory settings with all driver and tools on your notebook but important is you burn this image on a blank DVD using preinstalled recovery media creator. You will get a disk with an image of Windows with all drivers and tools => ?out of box settings?. So the same settings as you purchased the computer.

2.I think the FN keys don?t work anymore because you disabled some important Toshiba tools they are necessary for FN keys. For FN keys the startup items ?TOSHIBA Button Support? and ?TOSHIBA Flash Cards? are absolutely necessary so you should enable them and restart the computer.

Hey,

So basically i have a Satellite C660, and it came loaded with a iso on drive D. So whenever i need to clean my system i can just use the iso from drive d and it will be like new again. However i hate all this toshiba bloatware it installs and all other stupid stuff, so i was wondering if i got a windows 7 disk, and like booted the laptop up from the disk, and installed windows 7 from it without all the stupid stuff, would everything still work as normal? or what?

Thanks.

Answer:Satellite C660 - Can I use own Win7 without Toshiba bloatware?

Generally speaking you can do with your notebook whatever you want and nobody force you to use preinstalled stuff. You can install own Win7 version and if you install all necessary drivers it will works without any problems.

Please note: for this own Win7 version you must have valid licence for product activation and before you start installation create recovery DVD for recovery image back-up. After your Win7 installation you will not be able to start recovery image installation from HDD.

What I do, and can also recommend to you and all other people, is preinstalled OS optimization. Use original Win7 but remove all stuff you don?t need. After doing this you will have original, activated OS that will run much faster and without some ?useless? stuff.

This question relates to a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-1UX Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1.

Some of the onboard keys (E, T, U, I, O, A, B, N, together with the Enter key) fail to register. All of the other keys tested so far appear to register normally.

When connecting an external USB keyboard, all keys function properly. However, when using either the onboard keyboard or the external USB keyboard, it is necessary to hold down whatever key is selected for approx 2-3 seconds in order for its character to register. This makes typing incredibly slow and is understandably unacceptable.

I've checked device manager looking for errors, but am unable to find any. The driver for the keyboard is listed as installed and working properly, and driver update says that the latest version is in already in use.

I have also scanned for viruses using Malware Bytes and Spybot, and also with the laptops own pre-installed antivirus software. All of the full system scans return a no threat found message.

I have read that the keyboards on these machines are prone to failure, which could answer why only certain onboard keys function. The fact that all keys on the external USB keyboard work would seem to confirm this. However, the fact that both onboard and external keyboard is affected by the same slow keypress might also suggest a bios problem - but as this laptop is several years old and has been working perfectly, why would bios suddenly cause this problem.

Hello everyone,

I wandered if anyone can help me. Over this week I have purchased 2 x 4GB RAM Modules from Maplin stores in the United Kingdom (that's where I live) and I have installed them in the laptop and everytime I go to install Windows, the Laptop Blue Screens and turns itself off. I did some research before I bought the RAM on the Crucial memory website and it recommended me to buy the DDR 3 PC3-12800 RAM which is what I bought from Maplins, however this doesn't work.

The laptop is running the BIOS version of 1.08, does this matter?

Thanks!

Hey ive got a C660 here,
So my sister installed windows 8 and deleted the original windows 7 partition and now she wants to go back to windows 7 but whenever she presses F8 and goes into 'repair my computer' the toshiba hdd recovery wizard isnt there anymore. How can I get this back? The HDD Recovery partition is still there though. Any ideas?

Cheers.

Answer:Satellite C660 - missing Toshiba HDD Wizard

HDD recovery installation works with ?factory settings? only. After Win8 installation this will not work anymore. Recovery image can be on the HDD but it is not possible to start HDD recovery image installation.

Only way to install recovery image again is usage of recovery DVD. I presume your sister didn?t create it in the past. Now she must order original recovery DVD from https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

If you have more questions you are welcome.

Good health. On the laptop TOSHIBA C 660, replaced the hard drive and, as a fact, the OS flew down (Windows 7 SP1 HB x 64). Installed not licensed, there was no way out, on the Microsoft website, to download the image failure, the key from the laptop is not suitable. Not a licensed image, there was no desire to put, the assembly is an assembly, naturally installed such an operating system behaved badly, buggy. Done, and now the laptop does not work. In the service center installation of OS and drivers costs 3500 rbl. Offensively. So I'm looking for help on the forum. Please, kindly request help. Thank you.

Hi,

Having problems, keeps coming up an error has occured now shuting down, this is when i try and up date the password?
When i try and up date the driver it comes up with the following appication using these files that need to be updated by this setup.
Close these applications and click retry to cointinue. SmartFaceVWatcher.exe

Please could some explain what i need to do?

Answer:Satellite C660 - Toshiba face recognition

Hi

SmartFaceVWatcher.exe belongs to the Toshiba software and I think this related to face recognition utility.
To be honest I?m not quite sure what cause the error message but I recommend doing this;
- Uninstall face recognition utility
- Clean the OS using CCleaner (its freeware tool)
- Reboot several times and install the face recognition utility again
- Reboot the notebook, run once again CCleaner and then start the face recognition utility

Good luck

Hello,

in the beginning of December I bought the above notebook as second hand.

The fomer owner told me that after a Windows 10 update (original OS was Win 8) the Notebook shut down and for him it was not possible to get access neither to the operating system nor to the BIOS. He said he had tried it with all known key combinations.

I have to note, that the notebook came with a non-original HDD (a 320 GB Toshiba HDD) and a non-original power supply (Fujitsu AC Adapter with 4.22A/19V).

Back at home I tried myself several ways to get access to the BIOS (pressing F2, FN+F2, F8, F12 and futher more), but I have not been successful.
Connecting the notebook with a external display gave no signal.

I already thought that I got a complete defektive notebook, although the LED on the frontside were glowing, the battery was obviously charging and the cooling fan startet. The DVD drive also blinked after pressing the power button. Funnily enough the "Num Lock" light was glowing green and I was not able to eliminate it.

So frustrated I put the notebook aside.

At Christmas I startet a second try. Again I tried several key combinations (I think the last one was Window key + Power) and sudeenly the "Leading innovation" logo came and after that a message concerning "RTC".
I got access to the BIOS an edited the date and time.
After that it was possible to reboot the notebook and to install Windows 10 with a USB 3 stick

Hi. I just bought a new toshiba satellite A210/A215 laptop two weeks ago. After about a week of use, something unusual started happening. After I had been using the laptop for awhile (sometimes a couple of minutes, sometimes several hours), the screen suddenly turns black with no warning. It is still on, because I can hear it running. I just can't see anything on the screen and any music or video playing stops. If anyone could help with this that would be great. Thanks!

ive just installed xp
after the TPS installation was finished,TPS gives me this error
and wont work

any help will be so much appreciated

Answer:Satellite C660 & Win XP Toshiba Power saver error 0x2

Can you please post exact notebook model? I just want to check if your notebook is full supported for WXP.
Anyway, before you start to install any Toshiba specific tool or utility you must install common modules at first.

Please test it.

From my experience it is not easy to fix now so it is also possible that you must reinstall WXP and install all drivers, tools and utilities in right install order.

Hi Folks,

A colleague passed me his poorly laptop (the Toshiba C660-18C of the title) as he is unable to connect to the internet after the re-installation of Windows 7 HP 32-bit.

Story so far...

His computer was slow - full of junk and stuff - so he asked me if I had a Win 7 disk for him to start again with a clean install.

I provided him with a disk and the re-installation went without a hitch - except now there aren't any drivers for the Ethernet NIC or WiFi and so he is unable to connect by either wired connection or wireless.

I've had a look and can't figure out what the problem is.

Device manager doesn't give any info - nothing like 'Realtek PCIe EE Family Controller' or 'Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC' that appear on my wife's Toshiba C660. Also there is no 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' (not sure if that is needed). There is no description at all of the hardware.

I have found from the Toshiba UK website the following drivers and installed them, but still no joy.
The Network Device ID Registry Setting Tool, Realtek Semiconductor Corporation LAN Driver, Toshiba Wireless LAN Indicator and Toshiba Hardware Setup.

I went with the Realtek drivers as the Toshiba website lists these as 32-bit. The NICs may be Atheros but the only drivers I could find for them were 64-bit (will they still work on a 32-bit OS?) - and these were on Toshiba Australia's support site.

Several websites have links for what seem to be the correct drivers - but t... Read more

Sorry I wasn't exactly sure where to post this thread

I looked up how to remove this warning that keeps coming up on this forum earlier and followed the procedure someone posted about renaming a file called TWARNMSG.EXE. i couldn't find that file, and as the problems and the make of laptop were slightly different, I thought I'd post my issue.

My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16W and I have a message that keeps coming up every ~20 seconds headed "System Warning" and reads: "Warning: A problem with the cooling system has been detected. (Next Line) Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service."

I have had this warning coming up for months and tolerated it but it has gotten worse and annoyed me for the last time. I can hear the fan, and the computer is not over heating. No other issues arise like the computer slowing down, it just gets in the way of what I am doing, like typing right now. As I have typed, it's already popped up 6-7 times.

Please help soon, this is preventing me from gaming and even other things by now.

Thanks

I'm going to have your thread moved to a more appropriate forum. Please stay subscribed.

Note: TWarnMsg twarnmsg.exe > Toshiba System Warning Function for Windows 98, Me, 2000 - provides notification dialog when the cooling fan stops ...

This is a valid program, but it is up to you whether or not you want it to run on startup.

There are some rogue programs that give fake alerts or 'critical system messages.' But this isn't one of them. It is specific to the brand of system you have. It might be that someone in the other forum has another idea- but my suggestion would be to take it to a show and have them open and clean out the box.

Hey everyone.

I recently changed my HDD and did a fresh reinstall, as the previous one was damaged. What happens now is that every time I plug or unplug the power cable the display goes black for a second. There are no real negative consequences from this, I would just prefer if there was an option to make this not happen.

So, give out a shout anyone if you know how to deal with this.

Answer:Satellite C660-1J2 - Display goes black for a second

Hello

> I recently changed my HDD and did a fresh reinstall
Have you installed Windows from Toshiba recovery disk or normal Microsoft Windows disk?

For me it sounds like that you have forgotten to install the display driver. Also check the device manager for yellow exclamation marks or unknown devices.
Make sure that correct display driver is installed. You can download the newest version on official Toshiba website:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

Check this!!!

I spend some hours to try to create the recovery disks for my Laptop (Satellite C660-1DG)

It fails on the second DVD halfway. It just hangs. CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work anymore a cold boot is required to start the thing again.

I tried several DVD's but NOGO each time halfway the second DVD it hangs.

I really need to create these recovery DVD's because Im going to upgrade the laptop to run a Windows Server 2012 install for development purposes.

I thought this would take just a minimum amount of time but... of course...

Any thoughs on any way to get this stuff working?

Answer:Satellite C660-1DG - Toshiba Media Creator Recovery fails creating 2nd DVD

I burned just another disk and it was full of validation errors: hundreds.

So I connected my external DVD writer (NEC ND-3500AG) (firmware 2.1A) and took THE SAME DVD and burned it: presto: no problems: 0 validation errors

So I deduce that the internal DVD writer (TSSTcorp TS-L633C) (firmware TF20) is chunky.

I am still in warranty but... is it any use?

This is my second attempt to recovery using the hidden image. The first attempt hung at an earlier point Loading Windows 7 ;( However on this attempt it has been over an hour on the "Setup is starting services" screen with a moving light under it.

Does anyone have any reasonable idea how much time this process takes? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite C660-1F1 Toshiba HDD Recovery "Setup is starting services" hang?

Powered off after 2 hours.

Seems that it could be BIOS version currently 1.2 needs upgrade to a more recent version so I'll have a look at that. Also possible issue with bootrec maybe.

I'll update later :)

Hi,

I was just wondering if the web camera on the Satellite C660/C660D is colour or black and white?
If its colour, how do I change it to colour?

Thanks.

Answer:Satellite C660/C660D - Webcam colour or black and white?

Hi

Of course it?s color cam.
It?s a common webcam? Do you have just black/white webcam picture?
In your case I recommend checking the webcam software options.
Start the Camera Assistant software and in the Properties you could find the option called ?Backlight Compensation?. Check this option.
Furthermore in the ?Image? tab you will find some controls like: brightness, gamma, hue, saturation and sharpness. Play around with these settings.

Hi everyone,

I am having an issue with my Toshiba notebook. My model is Satellite A210 - MS508C. I am out of warranty.

Originally, I was having problems turning on my computer. I would push the power button to turn on the computer. Usually, there is a Toshiba loading screen with a bar at the bottom showing the loading process. Right after, there is a Windows loading screen with another bar at the bottom showing the loading process. I was having problems at the Toshiba loading screen. It would load about 75% and then freeze. My computer would not turn on and I would have to manually press the power button to turn the computer off. Then, press the power button again after waiting a few minutes to try to turn the computer on again.

After having this problem for a week, I figured it was maybe because my computer is not as updated as it should be. So I went to the official Toshiba website to their updates page. I started to download the BIOS update.

In the middle of the installation, my computer shut down (turned off) by itself. There was no indication that the installation was complete. I also remembered reading that the BIOS update should restart automatically. My computer turned off itself all of a sudden and did not turn back on. After waiting a couple of minutes, I tried turning it on manually by pushing the power button. There was sound and the blue power button light below the touchpad was on. However, the screen was black and blank.

I've read a co... Read more

Answer:Toshiba Satellite - black screen after "bios" update

Known issue, but Toshiba takes forever to make it right... Yes we have seen the problem... but don't expect Toshiba to get it back to you quickily... as they have to replace the system board, and they are usually out.
There is nothing you can do but send it in... because otherwise your system board is ruined.
Good luck

When my wife got off the plane a baggage handler helped her by pushing her mother in the wheelchair and dragging one of the bags behind him allowing my wife to take care of the rest of the luggage. Unfortunately the laptop that was sitting on top of that bag decided that it didn't like the ride, it jumped off the bag and tried to enter the terminal under its own battery power.

There is no visible damage to the laptop as it was inside the laptop bag and no cracks or anything on the screen. When the laptop turns on, the screen can remain blank, flicker or it will display the log on and desktop but instead of showing white it displays a pinkish purple, only white is affected not off white. Other colours display correctly although they do look as if the display is set to 256 colour or using the wrong driver.

I connected an external monitor to it and that works fine with full colour. If the laptop screen flickers a light tap to the back of it will get it to stay on but the colour isn't corrected. I am thinking that it may be just a loose connection or broken wire between the screen and the motherboard but not sure if the change in colour would be caused by this.

Satellite C660 (PSC1LA-00J001) looks brand new but I don't think it would be worth taking in to get fixed.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

It took me 2 1/2 hours to post this exact same message because somewhere in there is profanity or inappropriate language. :(

Answer:Satellite C660 - screen issue

Hello

On this virtual way it is not possible to say for sure what is wrong there. Your notebook must be disassembled and all must be checked. Graphic card seems to be OK so there must be some problem with connectors, cable or with the display itself.
>Satellite C660 (PSC1LA-00J001) looks brand new but I don't think it would be worth taking in to get fixed.
Why not? Even display exchange is not so problematic. Googling around you will find many online stores where you can order new display, if necessary. Even on eBay you can get it for reasonable price.

If you don't have experience with this stuff I recommend you to contact nearest Toshiba service provider or some independent IT service and ask for help. Check which options are available and how much you must pay for repair.

This evening I bumped my computer screen as I rested it down (not too hard, but it slightly slipped from my grip).

The laptop appears to be functioning okay other than an issue with the screen. About 3 quarters of the screen is not working, it is just white background, with colourful streaks, and a large diagonal black line.

Is this likely to be simply a broken screen, that could be solved by replacing the screen itself? I am waiting to order a new screen but I don't want to spend the money if the problem is likely to be something else..

Also I've been told it's relatively easy to replace the screen yourself. I've done minor repairs on laptops/pc's in the past (new keyboard/track pad). I don't have warranty/insurance and can't afford a pro. Is it something I should be able to do myself?

Answer:Screen Broken - Satellite C660

>Is it something I should be able to do myself?
Generally speaking yes, you can do this on your own but without experience and maintenance manuals document it could be a bit problematic and risky. Many screws are hidden and many small parts have plastic holders that could be broken.

Of course it would be better to pay someone to do this on professional way without some risk. You must decide what should be done. If you want to do this on your own and there is some problem let us know.
