Outlook express 6 not accepting password

Question: Outlook express 6 not accepting password

I decided to change my passwords tonight for all three on my email accounts- to something more complex. I changed them all to the same password. I have 2 charter email accounts (end with @charter.net- which is my ISP) and an @gmail.com account

I know the password is correct, but it will not accept it, after I input it, it will just pop up the box again asking for it.

Preferred Solution: Outlook express 6 not accepting password

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Outlook express 6 not accepting password

Well, I managed to get my gmail account up and running. I reset the password for it on gmail's web site.

As for the 2 charter accounts. I'm not sure about them. I changed the passwords under tools>accounts. And they worked fine previously for the old passwords I had. But, not for the new password I put it.

I had thought perhaps that changing it under tools>accounts wouldn't really work, because the passwords are stored on mail.charter.net, but if this is the case, why was it accepting the old passwords before I changed it tonight (which were stored under tools>accounts) if they weren't what charter has for the correct passwords? I tried putting in the old passwords, doesn't seem to be working.

My Outlook Express Inbox stopped accepting new e-mails on May 17, but it is currently holding over 6000 e-mails that are either repeats or spam. Some of these e-mails are repeated at least 10 times. I tried deleting these e-mails but they just come back. I logged on webmail.cablelynx.com and got a list of about 500 current e-mails that have not shown up in my inbox. I get several pop-up messages about errors in POP3, unable to access my inbox. Also, I get a pop-up saying "CA Common Tray is trying to access the internet. Application: C/program Filed\CA\C...\CC Tray Exec. Address: 69.18.\48.62 Port 80. Have I been hit by a virus? At the time this all started, I had CA Internet Security Suite active on my computer. I have now disconnected it because I thought it might be causing the trouble. I am still quite illiterate about computors and may not have given enough info. Please advise.

Answer:Outlook Express Not Accepting Or Deleting E-mails

Have you deleted the mails using your providers webmail interface? While it is possible that you are receiving a lot of the same spam, it's also possible thatthere could be a message on the server with a corrupted header. A corrupt header cannot be processed by your email client and will stop messages received after it from downloading. You'll have to go to webmail and start deleting. After you've deleted in webmail, open up OE and see if it downloads what is left.If not, please copy then paste here any error messages you get from OE. Your statement about disconnecting CA concerns me. Either enable it OR uninstall it and reinstall another firewall and antivirus program. Without them, you are leaving your system wide open to attacks and viruses. If you don't want to continue using CA, there are some good free products you can install. You'll find a list of them here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic3616.htmlcctray.exe is a tray icon for Computer Associates Security Center interface. However, you stated you get CA Common Tray is trying to access the internet. Application: C/program Filed\CA\C...\CC Tray Exec. Are you sure that's what it said? I don't know anything about CA, so I can't help you with that issue. I posted the difference between the 2 names so it won't get missed by others who can help you.

Hello, I received a new laptop for Christmas and, while testing out the keys, clicked on what I now know is the 'lock' button above the numpad. It locked the operating system, as expected. I swiped my fingerprint, but when I do so, it goes to Lenovo Fingerprint Manager Pro and informs me that it must validate my password. I cannot change the username or location, but it has two fields: New password and a second one to confirm the previous. I tried my Lenovo password, my Windows 8 password, writing nothing in the boxes, and creating a new password with all the usual limitations - numbers, 8 characters, etc., etc.. They all return with the same 'Credential Error' that it cannot validate my password. Windows 8 will not log me in unless I complete the Fingerprint login. Restarting does not seem to work. What can I do to fix it? I'd rather not format my PC a couple weeks after I got it, you know?

Answer:T540: Fingerprint Password Manager not accepting new password.

*bump*  after an update- my fingerprint manager is now saying this error as well.  i can't change my password and the revealed password is incorrect.  anyway to reset this? . im afraid one day my fingerprint reader will not be able to read my fingerprint anymore and i will never be able to login ever again

The way OE is setup now, there is no password that it automatically inputs when you want to check mail.

I went to "accounts", then edited the default account, and went to the page where you place your user name and your password, with a little box down below you can check to "remember your password". The box is darkened because there is no password in the password box, though the little box is checked where it says"remember your password." I typed in a password, then placed a check mark in the box, then hit "apply", and stopped and restarted OE(You may not have t do this, but I did in an attempt to fix problem). Anyhow, will not accept password, must be put in manually every time you check e-mail(unless you leave OE on- then you can automatically check e-mail with password.)

The computer has been this way from almost day 1 when it was bought 2 years ago.

Any ideas?

Thanx in advance.

Hi there, accessing my yahoo pop mail through Outlook Express 6 isn't working (since yesterday), however it's been fine for months. It just keeps wanting me to confirm my username and password, however they're entered correctly and are the same as always.Even if I re-enter my password it still doesn't work :(Anyone come across this before?

Answer:OE6 Asking for, but not accepting password :(

I haven't encountered it with Yahoo but from time to time I get the same problem with one or other of my POP3 accounts. It generally seems to mean that their mail server is currently unable to respond, ie it's down. The problem usually disappears within a day but I guess it depends on the problem.

Recently, that past few weeks (maybe since the time of my Home Prem. Vista SP1 installment?) Outlook Express 2003 intermediately will keep asking me to enter my password to pull my mail off of yahoo. I have not altered any of the passwords or account settings. If I re-enter my password, it clears and then tries to send/receive and then finishes without error, but none of the mail is exchanged. Clicking the retain/save password box does nothing.

Thanks in advance

I bought a new computer, and during the set-up I somehow got Outlook Express to require a password for the server before I can download my mail. I'm the only one using this pc and don't need or want to have to add a password everytime I start Outlook Express.

I use Roadrunner cable, once Outlook Express loads it requires a "server password" before it will download any new messages. I wrote to Microsoft twice and no one seems to understand my question.

Try this:

Open outlook express>>click file>>identities>>manage identities>>select your identity and click properties>>uncheck "require a password">> confirm password and ok your way back out.

Is there somewhere you can look up the actual password. Our internet server will not give me the password, will only allow me to change the password and I don't want to do that. I figure it is stored in the computer somewhere, possibly the registry. Please help.

Why does my Outlook Express keep asking for passwords? I just added an account to my outlook express using MS Office 2000.

Answer:Why does Outlook Express keep asking password?

If you find it unsolvable here's a Registry fix which I have used successfully in the past.

Remove User Account Information
Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Navigate to and select: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Protected Storage System Provider
Right click Protected Storage System Provider and select Permissions
Click the user name for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control permissions are both set to Allow.
Click Advanced button, select the Permissions tab.
Ensure that the currently logged on user is highlighted, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply To column.
Ensure that Replace Permission Entries on all Child Objects with Entries Shown Here that Apply to Child Objects has a checkmark in the box.
Click Apply then click Yes in the Security dialogue box
Click OK, then click OK again to return to Registry Editor.
Expand the Protected Storage System Provider key by double clicking or using the plus (+) sign.
Right click the user sub-key folder directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key.
Example: User sub-key looks similar to: S-1-5-21-124525095-708259637-1543119021-16701
Click Delete and then click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box that appears.
NOTE: Each identity may have a sub-key under the Protected Storage System Provider key. Delete all of the user sub-key folders under the P... Read more

Answer:Outlook Express password

Hi LesBishop
Welcome to TSG

Is it the mailbox account password you need, or is it the Identity password you do not know?

If the first, you will need to call your ISP.

If the second, do this:
Open Outlook Express and create a New Identity, File>Identities>Add New Identity, complete the wizard.

Once your new identity is established, Import your messages from your Main Identity into the new identity.
File>Import>Messages>Outlook Express 5>Next>Select your Main Identity>OK>Next>All Folders>Next>Finish
Your messages should now be residing in your new identity.

For your Address Book
Start>Programs>Accessories>Address Book

If you have more than one Address Book
Start>Run, key in wab /a
note there is a space before /a
this will open all identities into one Address Book,
File>Export>Address Book(Wab) Give your new combined Address Book a name and save it to your Desktop. You should receive a Successfully Exported message. Close the Address Book.

In your new identity in Outlook Express, open the Address Book,
File>Import>Address Book(WAB), Browse to the new .wab file you created on the Desktop. Addresses in Groups or Folders may not be imported so you may need to move those addresses into the Main or default Contacts folder. Or copy and paste them between the Address Books.

Let us know if this solves the problem or not.

For the last few weeks I have noticed that all I have to do is click on the desktop icon and it automatically goes to my in box. How can I get back to requiring a password?

Answer:Outlook express- no password

Ok i have your answer. But first are you running Outlook Express 6?

If so do this:

1.Go to outlook express.
2.Click the tools button up the top
3.Click accounts
4.There may be many accounts, but click on the one that says 'mail(default) to the right.
5.Click the properties button
6.Click the servers tab
7. Uncheck the box 'Remember Password'
If you are not using Outlook Express 6, then the method above may work, but it may not be exact.

Answer:OutLook-Express, Password

Have you called your ISP to be sure they are not having mail server problems. I say that because when they have problems, you will just get an invalid password or userid error when in fact it's fine. It's very common for that to occur. I'd suggest you call them first to be sure.

Answer:Outlook Express asking for password

Your first port of call, is to double check with your ISP, if they are recieving lots of calls from people reporting this, then its a problem at their end, and if at sometime you did have a password that you cannot remember they can reset it for you, also check all your internet connections on your PC, sometimes a loose connection, i:e to your modem or your router, can also cause this, unfortunately if you have set a password that you have forgotten and your ISP cannot retreive it for you ( which i very much doubt ), then you will have to set up a new account !

Yes, it is my computer. It is my e-mail account. But I have no record of what was the last password I had use for taht account. I is only in Outlook Express.  I can not find it anywhere else. The e-mail  works fine. but I want to know what the password is. Rught now, I can only use OE 6 to receive messages for this account. I don 't have th password to use other e-mail clients.I thought this would be easy, but links found on Google are of little help. They talk about a PST file. Duh? whee is it? how do I find it?Any help would be nice.

Answer:How do I get password from Outlook Express 6?

The PST file belongs to Outlook, not OE.  I know of no way to retrieve a password in OE.  You can access that email account via web browser, can't you?  I believe nearly all email accounts can be accessed by web browser.   So, I would access the account that way, change the password there, and then you can enter the new password in OE and you're back in business with it.

Yep, you can do'er.     Stroll over to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/passwords.mspx and scroll down to Identity Passwords.  The other solution, if you're using Win XP, would be to create a separate user account for other users and password your account so that only you can use it.

Call your ISP until they change your password for you or change ISPs

You shouldn't need to 'hack' your own password. Thats just bad customer service.

I wouldn't expect to find your password in the registry, either. Most likely its/was stored in a file somewhere either in the program folder or in your documents and settings folder somewhere.

Because of this, she can't complete any task where UAC is required (certain installs, updates, etc.) and I obviously can't turn off UAC either because it won't accept the un/pw. Is there a simple fix for this? I'm fairly computer illiterate. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Im having a very frustrating issue with Windows Vista. For the past couple of days I have been having issues with logging onto my computer. It would let me logon after many attempts. Today was the worst its been. I have been trying all day to log on and finally just 5 minutes ago and I got to log on.

I currently just tried to remove my password and it wont even let me. It is still telling me that the password that I am entering in is incorrect.

If someone could please help me with resolving this issue it will be truly appreciated. I contacted tech support for my laptop manufacturer (HP) but the only option that I had was to re-install Windows Vista (which would result in me losing files). But like I said I just got to log on and dont plan on logging off until I can get some help. PLZ HELP!!

I have a laptop that I RDP into. The IP addressed changed due to DHCP (I've since locked it down so it wont change again.) After the IP address change, I am no longer able to RDP into the machine. The password is very easy and is only set just so I can RDP. Normally I would bother, but when I first set this up, I was blocked because a password wasn't set.

Now when I try to remote into the laptop, I get "User name or password is incorrect". I've reset the password multiple times and even removed the password, but I can no longer RDP into the laptop. Why? Nothing else has changed, that I am aware of.

Thanks

Daryl

Answer:Vista not accepting password when RDP

Okay, I figured out what I was doing wrong.

I received this laptop from someone else. This person already setup the user and user name (user name is user1). I renamed the user to something friendlier and I was sure that was what I had been using to RDP into the laptop in the past, but perhaps I forgot. I used the name user1 to log in and it worked. Go figure. Hahaha.

I've set up a second email address, for my husband, except for 1 problem. I can send messages from him to me OK, but he can't receive them from me - I get an error message (see below), that his password is invalid. It's just 1 computer & 1 ISP, and my email address was the only one till now. His address & password is set up at the ISP, and I've checked with them that I didn't mistype the password at their end, and they confirmed that the problem's at my end.We have the same password, and I was wondering if OE6 has some objection to that? It's the 1st time I've set up an address in OE6 - I set up mine in an older version, and my settings stayed intact when upgrading.I've tried, repeatedly, keying in his settings again (exactly the same as mine at every level, except name & email address of course).I also get (when trying to download an email for him) a password dialogue box, already filled in & with 'Remember password' enabled, that I can't clear & do again, cancel or close - it just stays there.I don't want to set up separate identities if I can avoid it - I'd like to just keep things simple and quick.Error message (condensed a bit);Problem logging on to mail server; password rejected. Hi.

Have had a genera llook in the archives about this problem I am having with OE 6 - but none seem to refer to my specific trouble.

I have several accts set up in OE 6, and one of them, which was working perfectly until a few days ago, always asks me for my password when I wish to send emails. It works perfectly well when it receives them (but interestingl, I cannot find the email it says it has received in the dialogue box)! However, when attempting to send, the dialogue box opens asking for me to enter the user name and password. This even though the information is there for me to see and I have ticked the box to remember the password itself.

I have tried entering the info again - also, deleted the acct settings and re-entered them - all to no avail.

Is this just me losing my marbles or something more sinister!

Hope someone can help - this is driving me nuts.

Thanx in advance.

Paul

I have a customer running Internet Explorer 6.0 and Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows ME. Outlook Express will not save her password. The password is saved in the Dailup, no problem there. But everytime she opens Outlook Express she has to type in her password. The Save Password box is checked inside Outlook Express, but it will not save the password. After you put in the password, if you go back to check it, the Save Password box is still checked but the password box is empty.

Any ideas?

I upgraded to a new Sony Vaio laptop computer last week and my Outlook 2000 (IMO) is acting up. No matter how many times I specify for it to remember my password (Tools|Accounts| Mail| Properties| Servers| Check “Remember Password”), I still have to enter it every time I want to send or receive e-mail. So I switched to Outlook express Ver 5.5 which still requires me to enter my password the first time that I send/recv but then does not ask again until I close and restart.

I am using Win2K & Novell Client Ver 5 for Win2K, the same operating system and LAN software as my previous laptop which worked fine. I've triple checked all settings in Outlook to make sure that they match my prev. install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can do it by creating identities, but it's kind of a hassle for shutting down and starting up. If you don't mind that, I can explain it. Also OE 6.0 has had issues with this.

The update to Outlook Express included with the update to IE7 blocks the ability to check Hotmail accounts.

You have to remove IE 7, upgrade to a paid premium Hotmail account, or only access the account via the web.

Is there a way round this at all?

Answer:Password Protected Outlook Express

Well, yes. You could always get back in touch with the previous owner and ask him or her for the password. Failing that, we're talking about getting some 13 year old script kiddie to try and crack it. If there was a back door there would be no point in having a password system.

Hi folks , I recently forgot my password for outlook express and now that I've tried too many times to enter it , Microsoft has blocked any further attempts . I've tried their lost password retrieval system many times now , and it just sends me in a circle . The alternate email I registered with them long ago no longer works , and I had password retrieval set to 2 step retrieval system , which is now the reason I can't get back in . Is there any way around this ? Is there a Microsoft tech support phone number to call ?

Answer:Lost password for outlook express

Outlook Express does not work with Windows 7 and is no longer supported. There are hacks to try to force OE to work with 7, but they're not recommended.
You need to use a different email client, such as Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail.

Hello, I am having a problem... All of the sudden, anytime that I try to send/receive mail I get a pop-up window that reads login - mail.cableone.net in the top bar of the box. The actual text inside the box reads the following: Please enter your user name and password for the following server. Then it has a box for my user ID & a box for my password that is even filled in in asteriks. When I click okay to sign on, it does not accept the password. I have cleared the box and entered every single password that I have ever used. It will not let me login to receive my mail. I have had this e-mail account for years and did nothing whatsoever to change my password. Any clues, Anyone?

Answer:Problem w/ Outlook Express PASSWORD

It may be an issue with the mail server, if it's not working yet, maybe check with your ISP.

I am assuming that you have checked the usual suspects...Caps Lock on...num lock off ...also look closely at the user name field, be sure it's correct. As a check, have you tried logging into web-based mail?

A user was converting from Outlook Express to Thunderbird (at my recommendation) and did not remember her password. I found a program called abfpr, which claims to retrieve passwords not just OE but several others as well. I tried the trial version (avg scanned before and after unzipping - clean), which only shows the first three characters... and it was enough to jog her memory and the day was saved without having to jack around with AT&T tech support...

I promptly removed it anyway), but it seems like a possibly worthwhile thing to have in the toolkit... I usually contact ISP and have the p/w changed.

Question: has anyone had experience with this software?

Hey all...

I have a user connected to a Win NT 4 domain via a Win98 PC. I changed her network login ID and now when she tries to open Outlook Express, it will open and show her her mailboxes and the message list, but when she clicks a message to read it, it prompts her for a password. It's not her network or email password, neither of those work. If she logs in using her old network login, she doesn't get prompted for a password to see her messages.

I upgraded her to the latest version of OE and that didn't help.
We are not running Exchange or any other internal e-mail server.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
