XP Folder Shows 5.5MB But No Files Display When Folder Is Opened

Question: XP Folder Shows 5.5MB But No Files Display When Folder Is Opened

Mousing over the "My Pictures" folder shows 5.5MB for the size but no files are displayed in the folder when I open it (I do have "Show Hidden Files" selected in the "Folder Options/View" selections). What is the problem and how do I correct it?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: XP Folder Shows 5.5MB But No Files Display When Folder Is Opened

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just tonight, a folder I have within my My Music folder (containing my .mp3 files) started only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only.  Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z.  The folders and files ARE THERE, because if you type their full path in the address bar, they show up (and the files still play fine in iTunes).Again, if you open up the folder they simply don't appear.  Even if you do a Windows Search, they still don't appear.  I even tried copying this problem folder to my external hard drive, but the folders and files still do not appear!  (THIS IS ONLY HAPPENING WITH THIS PARTICULAR FOLDER).I'm completely bewildered.  There have been no major updates or changes to the computer...I'm sooo lost. Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!>>running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2.

Answer:Folder Only Shows Files That Start With A-F (Won't Display Other Files)

Try Control Panel -> Classic View -> Folder Options -> View -> Select "Show hidden files and folders".  Are you able to see G-Z then?  They may have somehow been turned into hidden files and folders.

I had Windows 7 installed on my HP Pavilion a6500f. I did however have this exact same problem with Windows Vista.

When I open a file, say Chapter 02, when I close it the file has moved in the Windows Explorer window to the end position. I have my View options set to Name and Ascending but the files just won't stay that way.

For Example: Folder is Format for RTF. Files inside folder are Chapter 01, Chapter 02, Chapter 03 in that order as I keep everything in order alphabetically by name.

If I open Chapter 02 when I close it the files are now in this order: Chapter 01, Chapter 03, Chapter 02.

For some reason the file that I open and work on is always going to the end position and I don't want that. I want them to stay in alphabetic order.

Is there anyone that can tell me what is going on and how to stop it?

Hi,
I use "Photos" app as default viewer when i manually open a picture file from explorer. I don't really like it, except for its touch feature but i give it a try..
One missing feature is that once i opened a file in it from explorer, i can't browse others files in same folders from application.
Is there a way to enable this ability ?
Thanks

Answer:How to browse next and previous files in the same folder of file opened ?

Thanks I believe you can go next or previous photo using the photos app. If you hover your mouse around the right middle section, you should see an arrow for going to the next photo.
Or you can use the keyboard right and left keys
And since you said it's touch, you should be able to swipe left and right

Some days ago I accepted the upgrade to v6 of Thunderbird. In the next day or so, when I started Tbird, it displayed a small Safe Mode window. which I had not asked for, at least not intentionally. I had not heard of Safe Mode for Tbird, and I didn't know how to deal with the window. In trying to get out of S.M, I flailed around and managed to lose my customizations. I have probably restored most of those, so this is not an issue. --- However, my main problem is this: in my Folder List, none of the folders have text names; they all have numbers instead. They work like the text names, but it's *very* hard to navigate. When I click on a folder, the text name of that folder is displayed at the top of the screen, in normal fashion. -- My question is, how can I make the Folder List display text names? --- Thanks.

I transferred a load of pictures into a folder. The next day I can't access the Folder and, hovering the cursor over it, it shows as empty. It will not open, nor will it allow me to move it to a different drive. The drive is showing as Healthy and all other folders on that drive are okay. The moved files do not show up on a search.

I wasn't sure if this was the right forum, but I have Vista.

Yesterday, I noticed as I went into my folders that my "VIDEOS" folder was no longer showing up. If I do a search for a particular video, I can get to it that way, but the actual folder no longer appears along side the others. I can also get to it if I use the menu/tab at the top and click on like rebecca/videos/ and then the "Videos" folder suddenly appears in the links menu to the left but it's still not showing up on my desktop. Why did it disappear and how can I get to show up again?
Thanks

I have a computer running Vista Home Premium. On it, I have a folder shared read-only over the network as "downloads."

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks!

Answer:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

HI there,

PRECEDING PROBLEMS, MAYBE USEFUL, MAYBE NOT:

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for downloads/updates. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray that "something has happened" and the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\,... Read more

Try disabling UAC, i had my own issue with network files with Win7 and after i disabled UAC everything worked perfectly.

Also, try making a share that isn't in the root of the drive Or put it in the public folder and see if that works correctly.

The Browse For Folder dialog broke for whatever reason and I cant link it to anything specific I have done.

Please see image. The left is what I get, right is what I should see. The issue is some programs I use don't have the box for manually typing the location so I cant use them, I cant select location to save files etc.
Any help fixing this? In what direction I should look?

(Please no reinstall Windows etc. Thanks)

BTW: I have another healthy machine next to me so I could maybe compare registry entries, or files which are different. If anyone knows what I should look for please let me know.

Edit: This is Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Hey all, it's my first post here so apologies for any omissions or vagueness in advance. I'm running xp service pack 2 on a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop.

So, my problem is that my back up folder on my freecom 160 GB external hard drive has suddenly emptied itself of all contents. I get the "folder is empty" pop up when I hover my touch pad pointer over it and properties says it has no data.

I noticed this just after I had moved 3 mp3s from a sub folder located in the problem folder to my iPod using Floola.

"You accidentally deleted the contents!" I hear you cry; well, while it is true that a small portion of the files that were in the folder appeared in my recylce bin, when I told the system to restore them, they did not appear in the problem folder but simply disappeared permanently.

Apart from this, there is one another tell-tale sign that we have technological issue here. The folder will not accept pasted or dragged and dropped files from elsewhere on the external disk. When I try to do this, what happens is that windows explorer goes through the motions, but no file icon appears in the folder in the end. Not only this, when I try to paste the same file to the seemingly empty folder again, I get the message "This folder already contains file X. Do you want to replace it?"

So by my reckoning, the folder still has files in it; it's just that windows explorer is not playing ball.

Any ideas?

Answer:win explorer does not display files in a folder

Try a file recovery software like recuva and see if it will allow you to retrieve your files. Either way, run chkdsk or some other disk diagnostic utility on this hard drive since your symptoms could be caused by a dying hard drive.

Is there a way I can set this up so that when I open my Music folder that the sub folders inside are displayed in list view but when I open a sub folder the content is displayed in detail view without the whole thing reverting back to the last view I opted for? In other words...when I open my Music folder the sub folders are displayed as a list. That's fine. But when I open a sub folder to view the content I change the view to detail view. Then when I go back to the sub folders they've all changed to detail view too and I have to manually put em back to list view.

I have a folder of PowerPoint 2013 files that are songs to be displayed in church. The worship leader gives me the song list only a few minutes before they are needed so I need to find them in the folder quickly. The filenames are the title of the song. If I use the Windows 7 equivalent of "my computer" and navigate to the folder, the files in the frame you can see are in alphabetical order but move down and the order is all over the place. If I click on the little arrow in the file name column, I am offered a sorting order of A-H, and two others but not A-Z. So I have to scroll down the almost random list to find the ones I want. There are over 300 files and the list is growing.
Is there any way I can display the folder contents in alphabetical order of filename. Or is there a better way?

Answer:Sequence of files in folder display in Windows 7

Instead of clicking the little arrow in the 'Name' column, just click the 'Name' text and it should auto sort from A-Z and click again to reverse Z-A

How does one display the full contents of a folder and all its subfolders in Vista?

In XP all one had to do was right-click on a folder, select Search and press Enter (typing nothing in the search box) and it would display everything in a folder and all contained subfolders.

It's frustrating as I have to use my netbook with XP when I want to search through my external hard drive rather than my spanking new Vista laptop!

Hi all,
I have several hundred CDs ripped to my music library with each album stored in its own subfolder (which also contains a folder.jpg file of the album art). In XP when I viewed my music folder I saw a 2d thumbnail of the album art for each subfolder, whereas in Vista I see the album art at a 45 degree angle inside a little picture of a folder. This makes it much harder to see at a glance which album is which (and also takes much longer to load the images despite my new PC being several times faster than my old XP one). Is there any way to get rid of the folder icons and just display the album art in 2d like in XP?
Many thanks,
DD

Answer:Display just a 2d folder.jpg for albums (without folder icon)?

man , i ve been tryin to do that for years and epic fail , i installed xp themes , i created transparent icons , i created icons of the folder.jpg itself and nothing worked , there is no way i could make the folders just show the album art (folder.jpg) only taking the whole thumbnail in large icon view without the folder icon and not on a 30 degree
and yes XP was awesome in that way , i sometimes go to see discographies through my old xp system by network just to see how good they look if folder.jpg was the large icon
please anyone solved this please say something

I'm using Windows 8. In my "My Documents" folder (C:\Users\<MYNAME>\Documents), I have a folder (let's call it X) that contains yet more folders of images (let's call them X1,...,Xn). So the paths are C:\Users\<MYNAME>\Documents\X\X1,...,Xn. My "My Documents" folder uses the "Details" display. However, for folders X1,...,Xn (and ONLY those folders), I wish to use the display option "Large Icons".

However, changing the display for any of the Xi folders causes the display to change for ALL folders in "My Documents" (all folders in path C:\Users\<MYNAME>\Documents). I have tried several different tactics but have not been able to change the display for ONLY folders X1 to Xn.

I asked on another forum and someone said it might have to do with the concept of "libraries". I researched the subject but am not anywhere closer to finding a solution.

The folder X is program folder, and the Xi are folders that the program creates to stock the images. I could just manually move all images to the My Images folder (C:\Users\<MYNAME>\Pictures) since that folder has Large Icons display, but I would rather keep the Xi image folders together with its program folder X in My Documents. Anyone know how I can do this? It's driving me insane. I keep having to switch displays just to see icons of the pictures in the Xi.

Thanks!

Hi,everybody.
I've recently installed about 30,000 news fonts on my Windosw 10. The PC slowed down a bit, so I started removing 'some' (many) fonts.

However, now that I've removed thousands of fonts, when I open the Fonts folder it only shows the "This folder is empty" message. Acessing the folder's Properties through Windows Explorer, however, shows that there are 24,403 files in the folder.

I did search the internet for a solution, but to no avail. So, does anyone know how I can go back to seeing all the folder's contents or at least remove the new fonts and keep only the ones W10 comes with ?

Answer:Fonts Folder shows "This folder is empty" message, although it's not

You could try
Rebuild Font Cache in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Then you could try system restore.

You could try deleting everything in that folder and doing an in-place upgrade repair install.

And you might be able to copy the default fonts from another Win 10 PC.

How did you install and delete so many fonts?

So I basically delete a folder, on my Disk D, and it doesn't vanish, it stays there empty and when I click on it, it says "Folder not accessible access is denied". It's driving me crazy cause sometimes even a explorer.exe restart won't fix. Sometimes if it's a folder within a folder, I can acess it until the last one and THEN the "Folder not accessible access is denied" message finally appears. If I try to delete it, the message is "You need to provide adm rights to delete this folder" it doesn't work, asks me to try again and on and on...
Well, can anybody help me here? i'm literally pissed off at this cause it happens all the time, so annoying. I'm in Windows 10 Pro Version 1511 Build SO10586.218

1. Delete it from a command prompt outside Windows.

Shift + hover over Restart, left click. Boot to a command prompt. Navigate (carefully) to the correct drive, noting the drive letters will be different viewed here. Navigate to your folder. Delete it.

You will need some familiarity with commands here.

How can I copy the contents of many folders into another single folder without copying the folders themselves?
I have 900 mp3 files in 50 folders and I want to copy just the contents of each folder into a master folder without the folder there are stored in so I have a single 'list' of songs.

Opening 50 folders and doing a select all, copy, paste is very tedious and the probability of missing a folder is high.

Answer:Copying files within folder without the folder to another folder

Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack? asking for reference and in case their is a different way to do this with your Windows version.

One thought is to do a search for *.mp3 files and when they all list from the location you have the 50 folders, highlight and right click copy and paste to the new folder.

Unusual. Probably way too simple but go to "Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab" and make sure you have a check mark in "Show hidden files, folders and drives" also uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Hello there,

I've come accross this issue and it appears as if one of my USD drives may have infected with some sort of virus/spyware which prevents me from selecting the "Show hidden folders" check box in windows xp (2 desktops and my laptop). I found this thread and noticed that the person who originally posted the problem was able to resolve it following the help from one of the moderators:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...es-186285.html

I tried this myself and no luck. In fact after deleting teh DWORD entry from regedit and entering "1" as the value, every time i go back to regedit its set back to 0 :(

I've tried AGV & McAfee scans and no luck.

I used ERD commander to remove some hidden EXE which resided in the root of C:\ yet the problem still continues.

Has anyone found any other possible fixes to this issue?

Hi guys

Just to get it out of the way, I have already searched the forum for help (and the web),
and I already found a thread in here explaining what to do
write techspot.com in front of /vb/all/windows/t-5750-Access-denied-to-a-folder-merged-with-Partition-Magic.html
(i can't post links because i'm new here)

But, I can't find the freakin' security settings in Partition Magic

I've been looking through them all "general, view, disk, tools and so on"
but anything saying security I cannot find.
Is it me or my partition magic that retarded :-S

I have to admit it's a craked version, but it didn't complain about anything when I typed the serial just -
"thanks for using partition magic and so on"

When I try to access the merged folder this is what comes up
F:\g is not accessible. Access denied.
The same thing a unformattede harddrive would say.
So is it still a security thing?
Or is it my partion magic that needs changing?

Please forgive my newbi-ways

All the files exist on a server 2008 R2 NAS shared folder. Our users can copy files from a zipped folder to another non-zipped without issue on their XP workstations.  On the new Windows 7 workstations, neither copy/paste, ctrl+c/ctrl+v, nor
drag and drop move all the selected files to the destination.  The progress popup shows progress and then just disappears without event  nor error.  The destination folder will contain some of the selected files but seldom all.    I
have been able to recreate the problem and have applied several TN posted solutions but the issue remains.  Has this been seen by anyone else?  I am not interested any third party apps or complicated workarounds being my end users are not technical.

Hello I hope you can help, you have before and that was great!

I have had no problems since you last helped me but I ran a Spyware Doctor scan and found around 30,000 .exe files that were obviously some kind of trojan. I tracked them down and found them in the System Volume Information folder where I the system restore points get filed. I went into safe mode, activated permissions to get into the folder and deleted all of the files. This worked for a while then they just reapeared again!

I found somewhere that someone said to just deactivated the system restore service which again worked but hasn't corrected the problem.

I have just run another scan and it again has found over 30,000 files (around 2gb of data) in the RECYCLER folder (which I understand in the deleted files area).

Can you help me firstly get rid of them and help me find what ever it is that is causing these problems and get rid of that forever!

I really rely upon and need my laptop for work and this is seriously slowing things down.

Can someone help?!

Forgive me, I'm new here. I found the site by googling. I got some basic info in this thread

But I have a question about the Temporary Internet Files Folder. How long does it normally keep files? I look at it today, and the first record was from yesterday morning, but nothing before that.
Has the file been deleted or is this normal?

Thanks.

Answer:Deleted History folder & Temp Internet Files Folder

History depends on your configuration. Anywhere from 1 day to forever ever.

Temp internet files can be delted once you close the browser, depending on your security levels.

I've just started using my new desktop pc which I bought specifically to download stuff from the internet and to my horror it wants to save everything in my temp internet files folder. Does anyone know how to change this please? I've tried messing about with the security settings but that didn't solve it. I've seen a few threads on here but have yet to find an answer.

Now wishing I'd stuck with my old pc on XP!!!

Thanks

Answer:Trying to save to my documents folder rather than the temp internet files folder

what internet browser do you have?
you should be able to change the configuration from the internet browser, and to make it save to the desktop.

I pinned the Files folder in my onedrive.live.com account to the Windows 10 Start menu, and also saved this folder as a favorite in Edge, which is my default browser. But after closing Edge, when I then click the onedrive.live.com tile in the start menu, or after opening Edge, if I click the OneDrive link in the favorites bar, OneDrive opens my Shared folder rather than the desired Files folder. To see the Files folder, I can click "OneDrive" in the menu bar. Moreover, after the Files folder has been opened, if I then add a tab and click on OneDrive in the favorites bar, OneDrive correctly opens the Files folder, and will continue to operate this way (the correct way) as long as I don't close the browser. When I saved my OneDrive Files folder as a favorite in Firefox, I experienced the same problem. So the problem does not appear to be related to Edge.
How can I make OneDrive.Live.com always open in the Files Folder the first time?

Hello,
I'm encountering a problem on different computers.
Internet Explorer 11 and Edge are not able to open files from a shared folder located on the same computer.
For example, let's say I typed this "\\10.100.100.10\folder_1\DOC_FILE.doc" on the address bar.
The browser then shows : "This page can't be displayed".
When I display more information, the error "INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND" appears.
I have already tried to uncheck "Enable TCP Fast open" and it is still not working.
It seems like this problem cannot be reproduced on all IE11/EDGE browsers, and can be encountered on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

Q1. When I look at the folders in C:\Users\User-Name , I can see a [My Documents] folder. I double click on [My Documents] and the location now is C:\Users\User-Name\Documents , why is the folder name different from the exact folder location? (I notice all other folders that have the word "My" has the same situation)

(See screenshots below) NOTE: The name that you type in for the new folder will be what you see as the user folder name in the Start Menu (shell:UsersFilesFolder) location when finished with all of these steps. It would be best to use the same name as the user folder to avoid confusion."
and
"OPTION TWO 8. Navigate to the same location as in step 2 and 3 above, then select the renamed new folder (ex: Music), and click/tap on the Select Folder button. (See screenshot below)"

Answer:Why User folder shows My Documents but folder location is Documents?

Hello pcwin,

The user folders that have "My" in the name are not actually named with the "My".

These are symbolic links, so when you name the folder "Documents", it will automatically rename and display as "My Documents", but in reality is still "Documents".

It can be a bit confusing.

The title of my question was sort of complicated. OK, this is what I want to do. Let's say I am downloaded a file from the internet. I choose the folder I want it to go to. Now, suppose during that same session, I download another file from the same location. BUT, I have to navigate to the previous folder again to put my downloaded file into. How do I get Win 7 to go back to same folder I had opened before?

In Win XP, the same folder would open again w/o any navigation. How do I set up my Win 7 to do this? I hope the question was clear LOL.

To sum up: If I download a picture for example and I put it in "My Projects Folder", I go to put another picture there, I need to automatically go to the folder. As of now, I have to navigate several steps EACH time to get to that folder I had just used seconds ago.

Thank you!

Answer:How to remember last folder opened.

That would depend on what application you are using to download because that is a function of the software not Windows. For me Firefox remember where I last saved a download.

No, those apps are not part of some secret organization, lol. SWTOOLS along with MLPS contain OEM version of 3rd party apps which can't be installed back from lenovo's support site once removed/uninstalled. Lenovo has placed them there so that you can reinstall them in case you remove them accidentally, or copy them to an external media for future use on your current lenovo system if you wish to do a clean install of Windows. You can read about SWTOOLS here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77353

Hi,

I'm trying to free up some much needed room on my C drive.

I have run clean up apps like CC cleaner, but it's still not freeing up enough room.

I've looked at C:\Windows and found the following:

Size on disk: 4.14 GB (4,447,339,669 bytes)

Contains: 27, 777 files 1,623 folders

Which of these files can be deleted?

Or because they are windows files, should I leave them on the hard drive?

Your feedback will be most appreciated.

thanks

My friend (we'll call him David) created for some sick and twisted purpose a folder path that contained 107 (no joke) folders within folders, something in the order of, "C:\folder\folder\folder\folder\..." David is now unable to delete the folder directory. When he tried to delete it, it says "Are you sure you want to move the folder and all its contents to the recycle bin? (yes, yes to all, or no)." He clicks "yes to all" or "yes", and it says, "The folder contains items who's name is too long for the recycle bin. Do you want to permanently delete it?" He clicks "yes" or "yes to all" again and it says, "Cannot delete z: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename."

Anyhow, does anybody know how to delete this file? Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.

I know, the easy solution would be to turn off desktop composition, but that would be like disabling visual styles in windows XP, going back to windows 98 look.for me the most important thing about the desktop composition is that it let me choose colors, if not it is fixed to the green/bluish windows 7 default colores and cant be changed unless desktop compositiion is enabled.but when desktop composition is enabled (i mean, by default, it is enabled) when i move the cursor over the taskbar, over the folders i get a very nice thumbanil view, yeah.. pretty cute. but, how do i know which one is the one i am looking for? of course, there are thumbnails, but come on, they are thumbnail of folders.check the images of what i sayhere i can't see the names, until i go one by onewithout desktop compositionbut here with windows 7 at minimum (desktop composition turned off, with just moving the cursor over the folders in taskbar i get the menu with the names and i go to the one i need, fast and without confusion.is there any way i can have the names with desktop composition ON? or at leas the names offer the thumbnails.

Hello.
The last few times that I have opened up Windows XP Professional, the System 32 Folder immediately opens and displays its contents, even before the anti-virus software prompts for the password to access the internet on the computer. I find this very strange and until two days ago did not have this problem. Because of recent problems that necessitated me installing a new hard drive, and having to install everything as a result, I am concerned if this may be some software issue similar to spyware or some other problem I should immediately correct.

I was not sure if this was the appropriate board in which to ask this question. Please let me know what this sounds like and how I can resolve the issue. Thank you as always for your assistance.

This is seriously confusing me.

Some images i had in a folder of mine disappeared, i searched their name and found them in the same exact folder, the only difference is that I opened the folder from a different path.

They arent hidden or have any other option, i just cant seem to be able to see them through my main folder path anymore.

One folder has 253 images, the other has 257. If I try to move one of those disappeared images to the folder with the 253 images i get an error saying "the source and destiation are the same".

Any idea what is going on?

You are looking at the Pictures Library and the Pictures folder.

The Library may contain more than one folder for Pictures since it is really just a organized shortcut.

My Pictures Library contains both my Pictures folder as well as my Public Pictures folder.

Scroll down in the Pictures Library to see if there is another heading showing another folder.

Did you convert them or did you bypass the conversion. I have onlt seen something like this when I have tried to open a word doc in notepad or wordpad. Sounds like the files were either corrupted or the conversion did not occur properly.

Answer:Folder Causing Windows Crash When Opened

The module thats causing the problem appears to be lmpgspl.ax.
That a codec for a mp3 player or a video player I think.

What that suggests is that the folder contains audio or video files, and immediately on opening the program that is associated with those files (and that uses lmpgspl.ax) is trying to associate itself and it is causing the problem.

Either the program that uses lmpgspl.ax is damaged, or the file(s) it is oppening is/are damaged.

It may require that you uninstall whatever uses lmpgspl.ax (search and see what program folder its in, or look at it -right click- and see what the properties are) or that you delete the file or folder using safe mode.

When I open a folder in Windows 7, it appears that it searches the folder before displaying the contents. I have very large drives and some folders contain very many files & subfolders, so this is very time consuming. Is there any way to stop this behavior?

Answer:Win 7 starts search process when folder is opened

If you are talking about picture folders there's an easy workaround to open folders and show their contents faster. Simply open the folder properties and select file type as General items instead of default Pictures:

Okay. This is just... irritating.

I keep alot of crud in my user folder. Used to do said with My Doccuments in 2k3/2k/XP. That said the user folder really takes that slot in W7.

But whenever I have it set to Sort By Type, every damn time I open the folder it takes a few seconds to resort it...

If it's set to sort by name or size I open it its already sorted. Or at-least its sorting it faster than the amount of time it takes for the window itself to form.

This... is actually the grand total of my only complaint with Windows 7... ^.^... And I was a violent vista hater.
Anyone got a clue as to how to fix this other than reducing the contents of the folder?
I mean, what's the point to having good advanced sorting and searching--when it causes delays to use it?
Also, under 2k3(and xp I would assume) the exact same contents in My Doccuments didn't have any such issues. With alot more junk actually.

By your own admission you have a lot on your computer. It takes time to work through all that stuff. But lets make it as easy as possible on the computer.

Go to computer icon, click
right click on c drive go to properties
use disc clean (or similar name) when done, on the same page as disc clean you will see include system (bottom left), include that in clean up

Sometimes if there is a lot to be removed it takes more than one time.

After clean up Do an error check. get it the same... Read more

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

ONLY AFTER THAT
1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.

When you open a file WordPerfect used to automatically return to the last opened sub-directory/folder you had been in but now it does not. It goes back to the main default folder. How can I get it back to returning to the directory I had been working in. It is a real pain to keep navigating to the right sub-directory over and over again when you do several documents in row. I don't know if the problem relates to WP or to Windows Explorer (WINXP).

Answer:File open no longer returns to last opened folder

Have you run a program on your PC called Safe XP. This gets rid of all those options if you have ran it.

So my laptop is running Windows 10 Home Insider Preview, build 10565, updated from its native Windows 8.1 OS via the free upgrade several months ago. About two weeks ago, I got an update for Windows which I'm assuming was the update to build 10565. Aside from the myriad of other problems this update produced, most of which I've been able to solve myself, it seems Explorer.exe crashes (the current folder window closes, taskbar icons disappear and then reappear after a few seconds) every 2-3 or so files that are opened. If I open the program first, say Foxit PDF reader, and open the files from there, no problem whatsoever. I just, today, had this also happen when opening a file on my desktop.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but before, this crash would also kill my Synaptics touchpad driver, with no seeming way of turning it back on besides restarting the computer. I had to uninstall the driver (version 19.0.6.3) and downgrade to the version on my Toshiba's driver list for my laptop (version 18.1.7.17). That seemed to fix that aspect of it, but it's starting to kill me that I can't open anything from the folder window, it's such a huge inconvenience. Any help that anyone could offer would be extremely appreciated!

Hi,

when i have a folder opened that points to a folder present on my desktop,
and i physically delete the folder on the desktop, the folder's window remains
opened & goes back to the desktop folder address.

ex:

C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\New folder
opened on the deskbar & vm

C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\New folder
deleted on the desktop .. .

C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\
appears as a folder on my deskbar

Wanted behavior as in previous windows versions:
C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\New folder
should disappear from the deskbar & vm, too.

I have a program that uses it's own library. The path to this library can't be changed, and it's inside the "Program Files" folder. And the software itself has to be installed inside "Program Files" too, otherwise it won't work correctly (it's a new release and still a bit buggy).

Now, when I add something to this library, it's supposed to be present in the library folder. BUT Win 7 doesn't show me any files that have been created by programs inside the "Program Files" folder. The folder where the new library is supposed to be is empty. But the library is there inside the program, so it has to be somewhere.

Now, how am I supposed to backup those files if I can't access them?

Please help!

Answer:How to display files inside "Program Files" folder?

The program you are using is broken. You should ask the developer to fix it.
In reality the program is really accessing the file in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore

Answer:Can't create New Folder or see files on a folder.

Hello Preman and Prasad, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While in your Documents library, double check using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to make sure that the full path of this included "Video" folder is correct or even added to the library. Renaming the folder at it's original location may have broken it's link in the library until you correct the included folder's name as well.

When I try to move files from one folder to another (or off a device on to my computer), not all of them move. I have tried drag & drop, and cut & paste. I don't get an error message or anything like that, some of the files just don't move. So I have to go through file by file and see what didn't make it, very tedious! I have tried moving as few as 25 at a time, and they still don't all make it. Can anyone help?

Answer:Not all files will move from folder to folder

Seems like some were in use by something.

Anyway, can you try using Fastcopy? (this is the official website with download, select Executable (32bit), yes the guy making it is japanese, don't worry about the download page being in japanese, the program is in english)
It's simple and does usually tell you why it wasn't able to move files, so you can have a clue of what is going on.
For moving lots of files, it's much better than copy-paste/drag&drop. Also because of its options (as explained on its site).

In case of other problems, report back.

WHEN I COPY IT TO THE NEW PC, I OPENED THE FOLDER AND ALL FILES ARE GONE.
HOW DO I RECOVER THE FILES? PLEASE HELP
THANKS

Answer:cut and paste folder to a usb then files in folder

1) Did you check (on the original PC) that the transfer to the USB stick was successful before removing the USB stick?
2) Did you really CUT (rather than COPY)? If you copied then the files should still be on the original PC.

In windows 7 there was this feature I loved when you needed to open a file in a program via standard "File -> Open" dialog and if you had the folder with that file already opened in windows exlorer then you would just click that explorer window and your Open File dialog window would instantly display that folder.Afer upgrading to win8 i lost this function and really want it back.just a detailed process because I know it's hard to understand if you never experienced it:1) You have pressed File->Open in some program and Open File Dialog showing you some random folder.2) You have Target_Folder opened in windows explorer3) You click on the windows explorer window4) Open File Dialog automatically switches to that folder and you can just pick your file there without navigating for 2 minutes.

Answer:How to make Open File Dialog to show the folder opened in explorer

I don't think that what you are describing is a feature of Windows 7. I cannot duplicate it on any of my Windows 7 machines or VMs.1. I had a Windows Explorer Window open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET2. I used notepad and used File->Open. The Open File Dialog started in my Documents folder.3. Clicking the existing Explorer Window that was open to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET did not change the Open File Dialog to point at that location.I tried a few different programs (Wordpad, notepad, Paint, and Microsoft Word) and I wasn't able to get the behaviour you described. The feature may have been coming from an add-on program of some sort, or may be specific to programs that you use (and those programs may not support the feature in win8+).

I set this Windows 7 computer up wrong more than a year ago and have just lived with it, but I am wanting to use an online backup service, and want my files to be in a standard place just in case.

When I moved my files from my previous computer, the first thing I did was create a separate partition on my new computer, drive "R." I meant to then put everything in the "Documents" folder and locate it on the "R" partition (I had it set up this way on the previous computer, using Vista).

Somehow I got befuddled and they all went in the "Contacts" folder (correctly located on "R" but incorrectly identified). I think when I moved them from the default location on the "C" drive to the new partition on "R," I must have gotten trigger happy and hit the wrong folder button or something, I don't quite remember.

Fixing it is not as simple as using the "Location" tab in the "Properties" dialog for "Contacts." I want to leave all my folders on the "R" drive, I just want them to be in "Documents" not "Contacts."

I'm afraid if I simply rename "Contacts" to "Documents" or move them manually that will break all links to programs (big and small, such as Word, Dropbox, iTunes, etc.)

Screen shots below.

(And yes, the "Contacts" folder inside my "Contacts" directory does contain MS Exchange contact files.)
