Preferred Solution: Colour Schemes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Colour Schemes

This looks similar to a problem that Internet Explorer 8 can have so try the fix for that which is to change the Desktop Theme then change it back again.

If that works then do Start > Run type SERVICES.MSC press Enter and right-click the Themes service > Properties then change the Startup type to Manual.

That should stop this happening again.

Hi,

As I will only be using it once, I would prefer if it was Freeware.

Or even check out some if the "Hardware Stores" such as Lowe's and Home Depot.

Hi All - When I got this -rockin'- laptop originally I could set my own power schemes without problem.  Now it won't save my new powerschemes.  I try to create one, finish the last step, and then the power scheme isn't in the dropdown.  I read somewhere on the Web that this may be related to SP3.  Also, the only Power Schemes I have access to are Video Playback and Maximum Performance.  I have tried uninstalling Power Manager and the associated DLL and then reinstalling, but that didn't help.  Also, I see no reference to this problem in troubleshooting.  Thanks in advance.  This is getting really annoying as I like to use as little power as possible since I use teh computer on battery power quite often. Thanks!  g-

Alright so i've decided to finally make myself an account on the forums since i need someone to help me.

I deleted my power schemes via regedit and need to fix it (in an attempt to fix another problem that i'm having....WEI not completing "Cannot assest processor performance". However that was trivial now because this is ****ing important and i need to fix it).. . And so i've read somewhere else that it could be because the power scheme was custom (because i had it on High perf + custom settings)... anyhow... i need to fix this. thanks

Power schemes from below are gone.
*Control001\Control\Power
*Control002\Control\Power
*CurrentControlSet\Control\Power

Anybody can help ??
PS: posted this same thread in the general discussion forum just in case.

Hi there gurus.
My pc doesn?t show certain colour objects in Publisher 2007 and some on-line sites. Overall, the screen colour is very good. I know the fault is localised, because when I switch to Print Preview in Publisher it looks fine and I can see all the object colours. (I only lose the colour with objects, not text)
Also, when I send a copy of a Publisher page to my partner who is on the same PC, it looks fine on her screen.
I?ve tried going to Install/uninstall programs and run the Repair, but to no avail. The guys in my computer shop are clueless without seeing it. Anyone who can help solve this for me is a gem.
Cheers!

What's cheaper: colour laser with genuine ink or colour inkjet with compatible inks?

I'm happy to invest in buying a colour laser: but I can't find any refills for lasers
At least they don't seem to be widely available

So, my choice is: colour laser + genuine inks or colour inkjet + compatible inks

From what I know, side by side: laser's are cheaper
But, how about when compared to genuine laser ink to compatible colour inkjet inks?

I should stress that for me needs, I am not overly concerned if using compatibles doesn't give me perfect results - just close as possible is fine for me

What's more important probably is speed of print at highest quality

ANY feedback would be great

Thanks

Answer:What's cheaper: colour laser with genuine ink or colour inkjet with ink compatibles?

Finding Compatible Remanufactured Color Toner cartridges can be dicey. While they may be available, the problem may end up being the company tht does the remanufaturing. It is also dependant upon the model printer you get. I have noticed that the savings on my Black Canon X-25 toner cartridge is only about $12 lower than the cost of a Factory original cartridge. There are sites that I would save up to $30 per cartridge, but part of this is eaten up by the shipping charges. For my toner cartridge, I am about 1/2 mile from the store that does nothing but ink and toner refill services, and their garauntee thier cartridges 100%. In 3 years I have only had to return one cartridge and it was an HP #17 Color cartridge.

Now per page printing cost on a laser is much cheaper than on an inkjet. Though the printer cost itself is usually much higher for a Laser. Personally I use the laser much more than than my Inkjet, but I do use the inkjet for all color printing. But then 95% of my printing is monochrome text.

Hi, I'm using the Aerolite theme with Aeroglass, and want a consistent colour for the borders. So I set accent colour from background 'off' and choose the colour. Fine so far.

Now that's ok if I log off and on.

But if I sleep or hibernate (not personally ) and then resume, the colour and setting are lost.

I noticed that on resuming, the border colour is present until the 'Please wait' screen appears, after which these settings are lost.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Allhope someone more knowledgable can advise - I recently purchased a Lexmark x500n multifunction colour laser printer - I had a big black print job to do excel and word - 2000 pages - i was shocked to see that - ok the black starter cartridge of 2500 pages was nearly empty- fair enough - but all three colour cartridges (1500 page size) were nearly all empty too - I hadn't done any colour printing but when i contacted the manuf they advised that the printer uses colour also to print black!! - it's getting returned to them - but do do all colour lasers do this - obviously this quadruples the costs of printing and has put my costing out of the window!! - any advice would be great - it's a network colour printer, with copier and scanner that I need - a fax would be great but not essential.thanks in advanceTrifly

Answer:COLOUR LASER - PRINTING BLACK USING COLOUR!!

That would pee me off no end. How in God's name can it use colour to create black when there's a black cartridge in there? A cheapo mono laser seems to be your ideal tool. I know nothing about colour laser printers, but is there an option anywhere in the settings to print using only the black cartridge? Does the printer still work if you take out the colour cartridge while printing only black text documents?

Hello.

I seriously need help with my PC. I've reinstalled Windows XP and Service Pack 2, and I can't chnge the Screen resolution or the colour quality. It sucks. The resolution stays at 800x600, the lowest possible, and the colour quality stays at 8 bit. I think I have a ATI 128 MB DDR Radeon 9800 Pro. I dunno whether thats a driver or what. And I also don't know my graphics card, or whether that will help at all.

I would swear at this point but I'm too young.

Oh but I'll use this instead

Has anyone got any help for me that I can understand. I'm 14 but I still can understand most computer talk.

Anyway thanks very much for reading all this crap and please try not to point out all my spelling mistakes.

Answer:[resolved]Help with resolution and colour and colour quality??.. anyone??

Heya, welcome to the forums

Okay, it has to do with your drivers. Go to ATI's website and find your driver.

Here's the link

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonx-xp.html

Please download and install both the Control Center as well as the Display driver. Then restart your computer and try to change the resolution.

I have Win XP.I often change the Pwer Settings (eg monitor standy 5 mins, hard disk standby in 5 mins etc).I access as usual - Control Panel - Performance & Maintenance - Power options (Properties)Initially there were 6 or 7 default options eg home PC, office PC, laptop, always on.I then added a couple of variations eg monitor stanby 5 mins hard drive always on or monitor and hard drive standby 10 mins and named them accordingly and "saved as".I wanted to tidy the list up, so deleted a couple, but being impatient I double clicked on some, so deleting more than I wanted to.Now I only have 3 options. No probs you'd think, I'll add the ones I want back.I can follow the pathway above to get the settings as usual, I can set up new schemes and name/save.However, when I go back after rebooting (and after standby I think) the schemes I added have gone, I'm left with the 3 i didn't delete. Can anyone help?Is there a box i need to untick?I've had a look round the options under "power schemes" but can't see anything.

Question: Power schemes

I have a notebook computer, and in the power schemes I want to know how it should be configured. Should it be for max. battery, always on, minimal power management, etc. And then, the question is when my computer is plugged in or running on batteries, turn off monitor, turn off harddisks, and system stand-by after so many minutes or hours. I would appreciate any input into what these configurations shoud be. Thank you

Answer:Power schemes

You should be able to choose one scheme for when on battery and a different one when on mains. For battery, choose to have monitor turn off, hard disk turn off and system stand-by after a few minutes each (say, 3, 5 and 10).When on mains you can make these periods longer but I always go for stand-by, on mains, after 45 minutes. It's really down to personal choice - but, in general, you should have the various 'turn off' points after very short intervals when on battery to extend battery life.

Question: Power Schemes

Hi Guys,

I have created 2 new power schemes for our environment using group policy preferences for both our workstations and our laptops.

Under the sleep options under advanced options there is an option for "Allow wake timers". There does not seem to be a way to enable\disable this function with Group policy.

With some investigation i found that the registry key that needs to be changed is under a different GUID on different machines.

Is there a way i can deploy this function without using a script to a corporate environment via either group policy policies or preferences?

Thanks for your help.

Jase

Answer:Power Schemes

Welcome to SF! jase72

Generally this is an option found in the bios setup for the main board on each system if present. Once disabled there it can't be used in Windows and likewise needs to be enabled in the bios for use in Windows.

The power scheme option only works when enabled there first. Typically a modem card is added on the system for the remote wakeup call to see that task performed by businesses with several office machines involved. An ethernet network card will substitute for a dial-up type modem card connected through an incompany network.

Hey i just wanted to know any way to increase the number of options for selecting power schemes in the system tray power icon(battery). Currently there are 2

Can i add another one here itself(ex: 3.High Performance)? coz opening the power customization windows every time is cubersome (though it allows to select any of the schemes thereafter)

<Remember Vista ? we had these 3 options by default powersaver, balanced and highperformance when we clicked the system tray icon
maybe a registry edit could do the trick but i dunno much>

Been havin problems switching machine on. At first i thought it was switch bounce as the power light came on and off, the fans did but the HDD did not power up.

When I looked in the Power schemes the machine is set for a portable/laptop option. There are no other options available. On my wife's machine there are several options. I tried to create the Home option but it will not allow me to save and simply returns to the laptop option when i go back in.

I wondered if there was a setting in laptop that kept the HDD open..

Are there other color schems besides Olive, Silver, and Default Blue for Windows XP? Are they free? Where can I find them?

Answer:Does XP have other color schemes?

I looked around a little and couldn't find any. Microsoft sells some software on their site that claim to include "themes", which is what I believe the color schemes are called, but they charge for it and from what I could gather they are part of something that include screensavers and backgrounds, like trees and snow and stuff. I'll try to get ya the link in case that's what ur looking for.

You can still create, assign your own sounds in W8 with the old desktop control panel. Just look for the Personalization icon, then the 'sounds' at the bottom of the screen. From there you can change sounds to your heart's content. ;) (You just need to have the sound files already download)

Hello Propaganistas,

Sorry, but no.

However, as a workaround, you can create shortcuts to switch to any power plan. Next, you can Pin to taskbar these shortcuts, pin a folder to the taskbar and put the shortcut in that folder, or use where you like.

Hope this helps,

Hi folks, i recently changed my notebook with Vista Business SP2. My graphic card is Intel GMA4500. Everything works fine, but when i restart my PC when it loads windows i can see that the colors change a little bit. It loads in one color preset and when loading startup stuff like antivirus etc. it changes to a little more yellow. After that i go to graphic properties, go to graphic properties, color correction and i can see that one of the lines is a little curved - disbalanced to one direction. I click on restore defaults and everything is back to normal. Then apply, save, close and everything is ok. But everytime i restart the pc or comes back from sleep mode the colors are a little bit yellow again. And so on, and so on. I`ve checked every startup program that loads, removed intel GMA from startup but same effect. Help please, i know that there is a resolution.

P.S. I`ve updated graphic drivers too. Nothing changed.

Okay, I want to use the XP sounds in Windows 7 (I like them better), but my sister on another user account doesn't, and the Media folder is for all accounts. I tried making the XP sounds a custom sound scheme and making the "Windows Default" be the 7 sounds again, but then selecting the custom XP scheme simply plays the 7 sounds.

What am I doing wrong? Can someone give me a step-by-step tutorial on how to get this working, or is my only solution to replace one of the other sound themes with the XP sounds?

Answer:How do I use custom sound schemes?

Hello Roadsguy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While the contents of the Media folder is shared by all users, each user sets their own sound scheme to whatever they like without affecting the other user accounts.

The tutorial below can show you more on how each user can change their sound for events, and save or select a sound theme. If you have any questions, then please feel free to ask.

If you can find the location on where the sound files are in Ubuntu you could save them to a portable device or cd and put them on Windows XP but they will have to be converted into a .wav format.

What is the best way to lable cables from the wall to the patch panel and switch.

I have labeled the patch cords to the patch panel (1-24)number using each patch panel as A, B, C and D.

This is all I have now. What should I place on the wall jack in the offices? What number sequence should I use?

Thanks

Answer:How to label cable schemes?

Each network drop should correspond to a port in the patch panel. Label the drop the same as the port on the patch panel that it is connected to.

I have a fairly new Dell 410 with OEM Vista Home Premium. It has worked well in most cases, except recently all sounds associated with programs quit working. The start-up and shut-down sounds with Windows work and sound works with video playback, etc. When I go to CP and Sounds, the default sound schemes are gone. The only sound scheme in the drop down is "Modified". How can I restore the default sound schemes? Thanks

Answer:Sound Schemes Disapeared

Does anybody have a thought about this? I appreciate it.

what order should one put the power saving schemes in? I know the monitor can go off first, but then I'm not sure. What is the difference between System Standby, Hibernation, and turning off hard disks? Also, how will each of these effect scheduled processes such as AV updates, defrag and cleanup? What does everyone else do?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

Turn off monitor after _20 minutes____
Turn off hard disks __?_____
System Standby____?_______
System Hibernates ____?_______

Answer:Power saving schemes

standby: low power mode pc is still on
hibernation: pc saves everything to disk and shuts off, pc turns on faster than if you just shut down

others: turn off: monitor, hard drive, standby, then hibernation

My Power Options facility on this XP Home (SP1) PC seems to be broken. It won't save any new settings. Next time I open the dialog that new name is not available.

FWIW, some combinations of Apply/OK/Save give this incomprehensible message window:
'Power Policy Manager unable to set policy'
Indicates two revision levels are incompatible'.

Note that, having changed the setting by way of a test to say Monitor = 1 min (and leaving the other two boxes = 'Never'), my monitor does power off after 1 min. I just cannot save settings. But it deletes OK. I deleted one I made months ago, so now I'm down to just 'Home/Office Desktop' and 'Portable/Laptop'. Presumably if I deleted those, I'd have nothing in the drop-down box!

Anyone able to help me fix this please? (Short of installing SP2, which caused me many problems last time I tried it a year or so ago.)

Answer:Power Schemes - cannot save

There's an article here which looks like it should solve the problem for you

Best to try the simple suggestion (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302713) first, and then try the others it suggests.

G'day all

New to the forum and I'm hoping to find a simple fix for this problem. Loaded the Guitar Hero 3 for PC and the game runs fine except that afterwards the power schemes won't function with the game guitar controller plugged in. None of the Control Panel Power Options will work until I unplug the USB controller. What is the most likely issue or possible fixes? Running XP Pro, P4VM800 AsRock 3.0GHz, 1.5 GB Ram, GeForce 7300 GT 512mb AGP, SB Audigy SE, Dell P1110, 450Watt power supply. Any points appreciated.

Nope, got ideas though... You ever seen Short Circuit, with the robot "Johnny Five"? use some soundbytes from that... :P

so like for an error - "NOT DISSASSEMBLE JOHNNY FIVE"
Critical Error - "Now I'm REALLY P***ED OFF"
so on and so forth... if you do it, pm me with the download link for them all..

My employee has introduced one of these whereby you can take advantage of tax savings to buy PC stuff and pay over 36 months.Has anyone else been involved and can you give me your views please.

Answer:Salary Sacrafice Schemes

Do you mean your employer - the company you work for?I have seen these schemes in action and have two views. Firstly, if you don`t know anything much about computers take advice before you choose one. The scheme may be run by an outside company and you should check the small print very carefully. What happens if scenarios - you move companies, you are made redundant etc.Anyway, In general the schemes offer tax savings and are rather like leasing something over two or three years. Usually you can buy the product for a nomonal fee at the end of the agreement. The knowledge that the payments are deducted net of tax on a monthly basis make it an easy choice if you don`t have cash around. It also gives you home access to a computer and the benefit to the employer is that you will become computer literate fairly quickly and might even take work home to complete. However, the last scheme I saw was run by Dell for a large Rail Company. When I checked the prices of the models offered against their current website offers they were horrendously expensive. About 40% more expensive on the system he fancied even allowing for the tax savings. I`m afraid that computer prices have tumbled over the last year and the leaflet was 6 months old - I think they will continue to do so. Check the prices - it may be cheaper to buy outright or on a credit card.Having said all that my mate bought one anyway - just for the convenience!

Props to everyone for making this such a great forum....

My question is for all those Sys Admins out there and it simply is, what is the naming scheme of your desktops/workstations? Do you incorporate the users ID, the serial number, the type of OS, the location of the building?

Just wondering........ How would you go about doing this?

Answer:Workstation Naming Schemes

I use the room number from the building blueprints followed by a letter and number naming sytem. I have to keep a building map at my desk but that way I don't have to change computer names when people quit. I used to use the employee name but I could never find computers after two or the people had come and gone.

The letter number system Goes by Rows and columns. Closest from the door in any room is Row A Column 1. The computer names come out something like A105-A1.

Hope that helps.

Is there any way to get any other color schemes in Windows XP other than Blue, Olive Green, and Silver (without having to download WindowBlinds or Style XP, etc...)?

Answer:Other Color Schemes in Windows XP?

Windows 98 has a feature that allows you to change the appearance of your windows and backgrounds, and just the general appearance of your OS. Try right clicking on a blank area of your desktop then click properties, this should bring up a window with different tabs at the top. Browse through this and you should find ways to change the general appearance of almost everything.

Does anyone know why my screensaver doesn't kick in? And the Power scheme that I have set (Home Office) doesn't kick in either!? This has been happening for about a month now ... sometimes it does work but most of the time it doesn't. And what is the best power scheme to have set?
(I have an HP a1224n that I bought less than a year ago).

Thanks in advance!!

~Gina

Answer:Screensaver/Power Schemes?

What I would try to do is to make sure you have your screensaver set to something like flying pipes or something like that. Then set the time to like 2 minutes and time it. Make sure you dont bump anything and see if the screensaver kicks on.

The power scheme is up to you really. If you feel you want your monitor to turn off 10 minutes after your screensaver kicks on then do that. Same with your harddrive. Its all about conserving energy.

Sorry, but this will not be another Trojan question.

I am looking to steer up a discussion about Enterprise wide Encryption schemes.

I am interested in learning about solutions that will enable an enterprise to use file level encryption but at the same time allow the normal flow of information between employees in the organization.

My issue with most PGP alike solutions is that they are impossible to manage on a large scale and severely restrict what a guy can do and how can (s)he share the information within the Enterprise (and as a result, force people to quite using it for day to day events).

Relevant Links and suggestions are very welcomed.

Answer:Enterprise wide Encryption schemes

An answer to your question will depend heavily on the amount of money you want to spend on a solution. If the enterprise is large with many employees and has a well organised network administration team, then a good PKI solution is very appropriate.

The software we use at the Government of Canada is Entrust Inc.

http://www.entrust.com/products/index.htm

Every employee has their own private key and public key. This means they can store data on their own workstation or network server that is encrypted with their own private key and only they can unencrypt it. As well, data and email can be sent to other employees by encrypting it with that employees public key. Then only that employee can decrypt it.

And the heart of this system is the management node which keeps track of all keys and which keys are valid, etc.

This is perhaps the most comprehensive enterprise security solution available today. It is complex and expensive and may not be suitable for smaller companies.

I recently reinstalled Windows after having a hard drive failure.  I've installed the necessary drivers and Thinkpad Support programs that I deemed necessary, including the two power management drivers found here.  I can access the Power Manager settings via other means and have configured the settings to where Fn+F3 should choose the power scheme, but alas, whenever I press Fn+F3 it still turns off the monitor.  Any fix or compatibility issues I might be having? The Specs are: Lenovo T60, model# 2007-CU2 / 4GB RAM / 250GB SATA HDD Anything else I'll gladly provide you if necessary.

Answer:Fn+F3 Will not open Power Management Schemes

I have a fix for your problem. Fn + F3 does different things on different lenovo/IBM laptops. For instance on my T43 Fn + F3 orginally turned off the screen while for you it opened up power manager. This option is changable in the power manager application. You can change what Fn+F3 does in Windows XP by:Opening Power Manager (Might have to be in Advanced Mode)Going to the "Global Power Settings" tab at the topClicking on Fn+F3 on the bottom of the windowChanging the "Power off Screen" option to "show me the Choose the Power Scheme Menu"Your can change what Fn+F3 does in Windows Vista by:Opening Power ManagerClicking the Advanced Mod Button (on the right side)Clicking the Options TabChanging the option under "When I press Fn+F3"Hopefully that fixes your problemMessage Edited by AdamNL on 12-26-2008 06:30 AMMessage Edited by AdamNL on 12-26-2008 06:43 AM

Hi everyone,
I just purchase one laptop for a user that has two offices in different locations.
The two locations are on the same domain but have a different ip scheme, example; location A 192.168.40.xx and location B 192.168.50.xx, our network admin has set the network to be static, my problem really is, how can i set up one docking station to use one ip scheme and the other docking station to us another ip scheme, both docking stations are identical. I've set up a test environment with both docks next to each other and both on the network, every time I dock it uses the first ip I had assigned to the first docking station, even worse, when I un-dock and use the nic on the laptop it will still use the same ip, can I create different local area connections for each nic????
laptop:
dell e6420
docking station:
e-port plus port replicator

any input will be greatly appreciated

Answer:two different ip schemes, two docking stations, ONE laptop

Hello,

Assign multiple static addresses on the docking station/NIC for both networks.

You will also need to add multiple default gateways.

A better way of doing this would be to enable DHCP on the networks. - This is upto your system admin though.

I have reset my power settings, many times, to never turn off. I have tried setting a special scheme. I have reset rcgfrestore.reg, and savesettings.reg per KellysKorner items # 204 right, and #30. After going online for a while, "turn off monitor" changes from "never" to "15 minutes", and "turn off hard drive" changes from "never" to "1 hour". So far, I am unable to determine what triggers this change.

I am using XP MCE, fully updated with Athlon 64 3500

Any help in resolving this would be deeply appreciated!

Just had to rebuild my Satellite M30 with XP Pro 2002 SP2.
No problems with rebuild, however, I have no power schemes at all.

I have attempted the following, but with no success:

Installed Toshiba Console and ran ToshibaPowerSaver.reg.

Ran methods 1 & 2 from [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913622]

Download and ran the registry fix on line 204, left hand column,
Restore Power Schemes/Configurations: [http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm]

I have attempted to export power schemes from a colleagues Toshiba laptop, using powercfg /export scheme /file file, but I I seem to be typing the syntax for the scheme in wrong, as I can't get the export to work.

I have gone in to the BIOS settings at POST, and selected F9 to restore defaults.
Upon rebooting, I'm now getting an error

TPSMain.exe - This application has failed to start because TPSMainTtl.dll was not found.

Also, still no power schemes.

Not sure what I should do from here?

I'm at a loss on what else to try, and really don't want to have to go down the path of rebuilding the laptop again.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Missing Power Schemes on Satellite M30

Hi

TPSMain.exe is a Toshiba Power Saver file. The TPSMainTtl.dll seems to belong also to the Toshiba Power Saver Utility.

I think the easiest way to fix this issue is the reinstallation of Toshiba Power Saver.

On the Toshiba European driver page you can find the Toshiba Power saver Utility.
You should download it and should try to reinstall this tool.

Please don?t forget to reinstall the Common Modules too!
