Solved: pci.sys Software Hardware I dunno what ware

Question: Solved: pci.sys Software Hardware I dunno what ware

heyas;

so yesterday i power up my computer and... it comes up with the, 'hey, your pci.sys file is screwt. go fix it.' message. so i look this up on google, on here, everywhere, and i come up with a couple of solutions that are suppose to work. i have tried these solutions. they didn't work

solution 1: pci.sys software

i did the XP recovery thing. i expanded pci.sy_ from the i385 directory on the cd. i also tried copying pci.sys from my second hard drive, which had the old xp install on it. then i tried using an SP2 interleaved (or whatever you call it) installation cd i had made, and used THAT pci.sy_ file.

still started with the pci.sys error.
solution 2: pci.sys hardware

i took out memory stick #1. rebooted. no joy. i took out memory stick #2. ditto. i took out memory stick #3, i didn't even get the screen to come up. i put the memory back in.

i took out a wireless nic card i have in the pci slot. rebooted. no joy. i put it back in.
i took out my pci-e video card (not even sure that's the same bus, but what the heck). rebooted. no joy.

and that's all that's in there! no sound card or anything. IS there a procedural anomaly because i did it backwards? that is, instead of ripping EVERYTHING out first, and putting back in one by one, i just ripped out one at a time?

also note: my power supply in this machine blew out 3 weeks ago. i got a replacement and powered it up and everything ran fine, so presumably it did not blow up anything when it went. but now, i have this

what else can i do??

system specs: (from my paper on this system; i dont necessarily know what it all means :X )

Preferred Solution: Solved: pci.sys Software Hardware I dunno what ware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: pci.sys Software Hardware I dunno what ware

today i ran MemTest86 v4 on it.

one standard pass. no errors. it can't be the motherboard, can it???

i am tempted to try this procedure:
http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/

eight steps to fix xp. but though it has stops with similar errors, it does not mention the pci.sys file. does anyone think this could help??

Screen jumps and flickers randomly for example if I were to open MS word it gets worse for PDF not so and if videos no probs with jumping but the color pattern is changed 2] I am not able to personalise settings. Right click->Personalise opens a folder box that disappears by itself. Same happens with Windows update icon. I get message 'Windows Update is available' if clicked the folder opens and closes by itself. What could be the problem? Is it software or hardware? Please suggest ways to detect where the problem.

Alright, here's the situation, I've got a local small business that is looking to set up software that runs their rental/repair ticket setup. Ideally the software would be able to print a ticket with desired information and a barcode to aid in tracking the software. FREE or extremely inexpensive.

Other features that are desirable but not 100% needed would be:

Web based side that allows customers to track progress
Multi user/staff connections (database or web)
email notifications to customers
Inventory System (Would be nice to tie this in somehow)
Right now the 2 software that they are looking to use:
RepairsLab (this permits use of a database, however it's very limited and only permits one user at a time)
RentalVision (this is expensive, only allows one user at a time, and unsure of when they are going to open up web based)

Answer:Hardware Repair Software or Web-ware

I'm going to throw Connectwise's hosted solution out there, its pretty affordable and can do ticketing, web portal, inventory, RMA, accounting and invoicing, time tracking. Its a full service cream of the crop IT CRM

Hello everyone. I'm new here and this will be my first post on here. I'm sorry if I have started this post in a wrong thread. I'm unsure of where it should go. Anyways, I'm not a tech expert so that's why I here. I will try my best to describe my problem tho.

First of all, I have been having this problem since last week. The problem is that it just auto shut down on me without any warning.

I thought it was because its overheating/the cpu reached it limits hence why it auto shut, but thats probably not the case.

And since that happened I just thought to myself that I should just reinstall windows. Haha. I thought that would solve my problem. But it didn't.

This crash problem occured when I opened game. I also realised that it happen as well when I browse the internet using firefox. Like after I opened it for a few minutes it then shut down.

However, if I'm not opening anything else and just at the desktop and only transferring files for hours, the crash never happen unlike after I rebooted, went to firefox, then googling stuff and then poof, it crashed. I also checked the cpu too, but its not overworking itself. Its just chilling.... Oh, and I checked it from task manager.

I already tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and went to surf the internet afterward. No crashes at all. I could watch youtube as well without having it crash on me. But when I reinstalled the driver back. It happened again.

So... I don't know really wha... Read more

Greetings and Salutations.

I've had this issue for about a month now.. After 24 years of computer repair and diagnostics I've finally run into an issue I can fix. It started as a browser redirect.. (China TV, 123Save, etc.) and has sense moved to random reboots. (I've had two just trying to post this. I've run the standards, (SpyBot S&D, AVG Anti-virus, Ad-aware), with little success. Now this system is heavily tweaks and Overclocked, but all the temps and hardware diagnostics fall within tolerable limits. So with that said here is the requested data.

Edit.. I have also attached a HiJackThis log, in addition to ones requested.

I am usually pretty good about not down loading things I should not. But I got nailed last night while looking for a vector graphic....

The item has downloaded it self into my system at frist it was a new program that shown up in startup it was for Virus Response Lab 2009 (which had nothing to do with what I was doing) I removed it via remove add programs. But the thing has attached itself to my lower right bar (start up) giving me a flashing red X and then turns into a blue ?. You click on it and it goes to Virus Response Lab 2009 home page.
Ive ran my virus program and ran SPYBOT > My virus program comes up with nothing. Spybot came up with some issues. Which i corrected with Spybot. At this time of posting its 3/4 done and it appears clean.. . It appears to take it away but when I shut down and restart they are back.
I went to system restore but if I do that I will loose all my updates to spybot and my antivirus for the last two days. Plus nothing is listed for Response lab. So at this time I have not done System Restore

Please help me remove this flashing icon from my start up bar.
Thank you in advance

My puter has been acting funny lately. Some strange noises in cabinet at times. Rebooting in the middle of a game, etc.
This week I was in the middle of a game, Bejeweled Blitz, and it booted me out. I hit reset. It tried to log on then would shut riight back down. Although power appeared to still be on as you could hear the fan in the cpu, but there was no power to monitor or system. I tried several things and decided to reformat. It appeared to go all through reinstalling Windows XP, then when I tried to boot up again, it gets to the welcome screen or to a desktop with a recycle bin showing and the start button showing, then shuts right back down.
Any ideas?

Thank you.

Answer:Solved: Software or Hardware??

Can you boot correctly in safe mode?

If you can, then it's probably a software issue.
If you can't, then it's probably a hardware issue, or your reinstallation of XP did not go through properly.

How exactly did you reformat your drive? Did you boot to the XP CD and do it from there, or did you get to a command prompt and format it? Either way should work, but try doing it a different way than you originally did if you decide to reformat/reinstall again.

Edit: Also, you may have something overheating. Most likely candidate: video card. If you have a old, cheap video card lying around, try using that instead of the one you are currently using (you can also buy them from your local Fred Meyer, Wal-Mart, etc, for less than $40 for a really barebones card). It also could be your processor, but it's doubtful that it would get to the same point every time you try to boot. RAM overheating usually results in a blue screen, not a random shutdown.

hello, i have a problem on my mothers computer where when she sends an email from any service provider and attaches an Picture then uploads and send becomes all distorted with horizonal lines all over the picture. Like this one.
http://img115.imageshack.us/my.php?image=grpstairs1qn8.jpg
we also tried saving a picture off the web and sending it in an email and the same thing happens.
i cant figure out if its the hard drive screwing up or the processor or the video card or the wireless card in the back.
we can view the original just fine off her computer so im guessing its not the video card or drivers.
in the device manager there is an Yellow exclamation mark next to "WAN miniport (ip) packet scheduler miniport" and it wont let me remove and install, it says something about drivers not found and it being needed to start the computer.
any help would be great. Thanks.

Please note I do have a 1.5TB HD and had 111 gigs left. All my system information is on my profile, that being said, this is the situation:

I performed a file recovery in Recuva for the image files on my C drive, slightly over 3 gigs worth. I found the files I needed, and then turned my desktop off. When I started my computer the following morning Windows 7 would not start. Instead, I received the following error message in bios, white text on black screen:

find--set-root--ignore floppies -- ignore-cd/ bootmgr

Error 15: file not found

press any key to continue....

I did, and then was taken to a bright red screen with white text:

GRUBDOS 0.4.4 2009-10-06, memory:638k/3326m, Menu End:0x4g120

After this infor was a white box surrounding several lines of selections.

Windows with SLIC Loader (bootmgr)

Windows with SLIC Loader (use alternative method)
Windows with SLIC Loader (use older method)
Windows with SLIC Loader (full debug output)

Windows with SLIC Loader (more forceful - may crash)
Load external menu (menu.1st)
Grub command line
After that point, I restarted my rig, set the default loader in BIOS to CD/DVD, excluded SATA start, and popped windows 7 in the disk drive. I had the exact same result when attempting OS boot with disk. Even the "ignore cd" at the beginning remained, despite clearly stating a D Drive exclusive bootup in the ASUS BIOS setup.

Sorry for the saga but there might be a hint in what has happened that will lead someone to diagnose my problem/s. Computer specs at bottom of post.

Jan 2015 I migrated my OS (Win7 64) to a SSD but kept the original OS intact (hidden) on a partition on the original mechanical drive ( and thank goodness I did!). This mechanical drive also has another patrician for documents, Outlook files, pictures etc also accessed by the SSD too.

Since migration there has been the occasional BSOD at start up, but the auto repair always got me up and running again and never a BSOD during a session.

THEN about a month ago the first of a number of random problems: on a restart BEFORE windows splash, the computer indicated the CPU fan wasn?t working. I checked, the fan was working (and I have never seen this alert again). BUT on restart no video from the video card, but plugging into the video from on-board/motherboard meant I could see an otherwise normal restart. After reseating the video card all seemed well again.

Tried to install Win 10 upgrade when told my machine was ready hoping this might repair any faulty Win7 elements. Upgrade failed.

This seemed to make things worse (though it could be just coincidence) with lots more BSOD at startup. Bluescreenview showed all different Bug Check Strings and different Drivers at fault: avgldx64.sys and ntoskrml.sys the most common. IE nothing consistent. The only thing predictable is its unpredictability.

Finally the autorepair... Read more

Answer:Bsod Software Or Hardware? [solved]

I'd try uninstalling AVG (as 2014 is way outdated) and temporarily installing MSE as it's not likely to clash with other software and drivers.
I'd also run sfc /scannow to make sure that no system files have been corrupted with all the BSODs.

Hi there,

Im currently working on a pc that is giving me a bit of a hassel, let me explaine the senorio:

Pc was working fine and all of a sudden the screen went black, i then restarted the pc considering that was my only option. I have some experience with computers, so i opened it up and replaced the Graphics card with a new one - PC boots up, POST is visible but once entering into few xp's desktop screen goes black, no beeps & all harware seems to be working.

I then replaced the PSU with a spare and same problem.
Replaced the RAM module and same problem.
Tested the Monitor & is working.
I have the motherboard outside the pc with new RAM, new PSU, new Graphics Card & original HDD connected but just wont boot into windows with normal display...?!

The Motherboard is an early p4 : ASUS P4V533-MX
RAM : 512MB PC400 New
PSU : Procase 300W New
AGP : ATI Radeon 9550GE
CPU : 2.4GB Cel Socket 478

Oh and i've did the whole trial & error with the onboard display - same prob.

Im thinking bout maybe putting a new Hard Drive on and reformating it, loading xp and retesting old parts?!

Answer:[SOLVED] Hardware or Software issue?

Hi Sublime and welcome to TSF !

Have you tried safe mode or last known good configuration ? Repeatedly press F8 while windows starts.

If safe mode doesn't work with the dedicated video card then unplug the radeon 9550, reset the CMOS, enter the BIOS to check that the video is set to use the onboard GPU and try to get within Windows in safe mode with the onboard video.

Enter the BIOS at startup and tell us about the temps, fan speeds and voltages you'll see in the hardware monitor or pc health status screen (if there's such a screen).

Hardware or Software problem?

I have an Epson Perfection 1650 that I've used for regular photos and film/slides. I've never had any problems until now. Today when I removed the inner cover inside the scanner lid, then proceded to scan 4 slides in the slide holder, the choice of TCU was not there to choose. The light did not go on in the middle of the lid. I've looked for help but had no success as "help" did not recognize my problem. This has not happened before, as the TCU choice always was there to choose and the light went on when I removed the inner panel and had the slides in place. Hi All,

I have just started to use a Linksys ADSL2 AG241 Gateway. I am also using Comodo Firewall.

Question is :- As the Linksys AG241 has its own built in firewall, can I safely uninstall Comodo or would it be best to use both

Your thoughts and advice would be highly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Answer:Solved: Hardware and Software Firewalls together ??

i suppose the perfect answer would be yes run both. i however am just running windows firewall with the two i have built into the router (NAT and SPI). i was using comodo as i read that it was the best free firewall on the net, but for some reason it didnt seem to take to the pc very well. i dont know why maybe it was me i dont know. iwas getting fed up with it when i read that windows with the two built in would be sufficient.

I have a Gateway GT5068E PC, with 2 GB RAM and 200 GB disk drive. At power up, it responds very slowly and the disk drive works furiously, so I checked Resource Monitor @ Control Panel, and found that both CPU and RAM usage were often up to 90% or more. Furthermore, there were often over 400 'hard faults' for the RAM. This persisted for an hour or more, after which the CPU usage stayed below 10% and the RAM usage below 40%, with only an occasional 'hard fault' in the RAM. The system was naturally much more responsive. I intend to double my RAM, to 4 GB (the limit), and may get faster chips (666 vs 533, I believe). Does anyone know why the system thrashes so much for an hour after starting, and why there are copious hard faults reported for RAM? And is there any way to determine what speed the RAM chips are running, without disassembling the PC? (I disassembled it yesterday, when my daughter returned it, and cleaned it thoroughly.) Secondly, this Windows 7 Pro OS was installed only about 6 months ago, and does not, I believe, have much unnecessary software running under it. But Task Manager reports dozens of processes soon after start up, including MsMpEng.exe, which often consumes half of the CPU. And I noticed that 'TrustedInstaller.exe' was still running long after it should have been, so I killed it. Thanks for your help..

I need someone to help me clarify a point.....pleez.

I'm trying to determine whether you can refer to a particular piece of 'hardware' as an 'OEM' version.

I've tried researching on the net, but all I can learn is that 'OEM' relates specifically only to 'software', and that there usually needs to be some 'hardware' included in the sale for it to be legal.....

I know about the difference between 'oem' and the opposite to 'oem', but if I purchas a piece of 'hardware', for e.g. a graphics card, would not the accompanying 'software' be the 'oem' part of the sale??????

I can't find any site that mentions 'oem' and 'hardware' in the same sentence.

I consider then, that my purchase of hardware doesn't fall under the definition of 'oem' version, but the accompanying software would???????

Someone out there pleez clarify this for me.....! OEM Hardware? OEM Software? Confused!!!

For several weeks whenever I start my desktop computer, the light comes on but the hard drive and everything else takes probably from 20 to 30 seconds to "kick on." Then, today as I was working and the computer stopped, i.e., the monitor went blank and the only thing working on the computer was the light on the power button that seemed to be glowing faintly. I am concerned that something, e.g., the hard drive or power source is getting ready to go out. I Emailed a friend who repairs computers, and he advised me to defrag my computer and run a virus scan. I have done both and everything is working well now (but everything was working well right before the computer went "out" except for the fact that it took about 30 seconds to boot-up.

Does anyone know of any software (free) that can diagnose hardware that is failing and about to go out? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Diagnostic Software for Hardware?

I would take a wild guess that your power supply is failing.

Hi, a few days ago my computer started acting up and smoking from the PSU. So i decided it was time to get rid of all the really old pieces of hardware. Thus i bought a PSU, CPU, M/B and 2 new RAM.

CPU: Intel I5-2500K
M/B: Asus P8P67-M Pro
RAM: Corsair XMS3 2x 2GB
PSU: Corsair TX 750W

So i put it all together and start the computer.
First screen says "No harddrives found"
Second screen finds the harddrives, but says CPU Fan Error (although the fan is working just fine).

Now here's the real problems.
I couldn't start windows, the "Starting Widows" screen just would load all the way and then the computer would restart.
So i tried to reinstall windows, formated the hdd that had windows. Begins installing, but on "Expanding Windows Files" nothing would happend. It sat on 0% for a couple of minutes and then i got an error saying that it failed.

Any help would be appreciated, just ask if you want me to tell you something else.

Hi there, I'm new to these forums so I'm not too sure where to post this but I have been having problems with my Internet, I'll try to explain as fully as I can... This problem started on Thursday when i tried accessing my E-Mail on Yahoo! at first when I went to www.yahoo.com I thought the site looked weird, mostly because all the .gif pictures weren't showing up (Image 1) I somewhat ignored the issue (not assuming it was one at the time...) and went to my mail, I tried logging in and nothing happened... and nothing happened... and nothing happened. All that would show up was a blank page and load bar at the bottom wasn't moving (Image 2) . I just assumed that they were probably doing maintenace on the website and figured that I would try again later. I didn't try accessing my e-mail again until Friday when the exact same thing happened to me again, still not assuming that anything was really wrong I just went online and visited another website that I go to often (Yahoo! being probably the most viewed site on my computer), once there I noticed that the website had similar issues like Yahoo! was (Image 3). When I noticed this I began thinking it would really be a problem... I looked online everywhere for common issues but couldn't find anything, I tried opening the websites in a different web browser (Internet Explorer) and the same issue occurred, then I assumed that something was just wrong with my browser bringing up .gif files so I ran a search and found .gifs that worked... Answer:[SOLVED] dunno... Problems with Internet?

Hi Stryker, welcome to TSF.

Obviously the pages aren't loading correctly, maybe you need to tweak a few settings in Firefox. Yahoo over the years has never been the easiest of sites to access with Firefox, I know!

Which version of Yahoo webmail are you using? The classic or new one? Do you get direct access normally to your Yahoo webmail without the 'imcompatible browser' page? Or do you have to force open the webmail.

Did you check your Firefox Options? Specifically the Tools > Options > 'Content' tab and make sure the top four are ticked.

What version of Firefox are you using?

Hi, I'm looking for a way to dump all my system's statistics. i.e motherboard, sound card, graphics card makes and models. I know my graphics card and some others, but need to know the rest. I can open 'er up and know how to install most new types of card and drives and such. But it would be a great help to know how I can get these from outside the computer. Is there any software which comes with WinXP (Home) I can use or any external sources? It's mainly because I have a drivers CD with a large selection of drviers for each type of component in my PC, and I'm not sure which I need. Thanks a bunch! anyone?

Answer:Solved: Simple Hardware/Software Request

hi, Once a device or hardware is installed correctly, you can use the Device Manager to check the Properties of any device for example, a network card, and then view the Drivers tab which shows you the location of (path to) the individual driver files, version numbers, dates they were installed, and version dates too. You actually can back up each driver for each device by creating a copy of the driver built from these individual files put in a folder onto any media. Keep in mind that the various files that make up the complete "driver" may be scattered in the System, System32, Windows, and other folders... also- when you install the drivers off the support CD, they usually have a setup routine that creates separate folders for unzipping the files, things like that- they may be in Program Files folders.
That would be the long way around method> far easier to either use the drivers CD you have, to copy the correct drivers from to a CD or other media. Using the info in Device Manager you can then find the right driver on your Drivers CD.

You can also use something like AIDA32, or Everest Home Edition, to show you all kinds of great info about your PC:

http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page2.html

Scroll down to find the version for Everest home edition.

AIDA32 is Here

There are other third party softwares that claim to show you and can backup for you all your drivers but I have not used them.

Someone may be able to give you good info about those.

I am editing video and music and desperately need more RAM. I'm using a pc purchased in 2007, running Windows XP 32-bit. The maximum ram I can install (and actually use) on a 32-bit system is 4GB. I considered upgrading to Win 8, but I just learned this motherboard can't handle anything beyond XP anyway. I was told that I could add more RAM...IF I had 64-bit software. Someone that seemed to know what they were talking about claimed that the business of 32 or 64 was not hardware-bound, but was entirely software. So I would think that all I'd need to do would be to purchase some 64-bit software...but given the motherboard I'm currently stuck with, it would have to be XP 64-bit. I've located a seller of such, and I have a memory vendor I want to use, but before I spend money on software or memory that might not work because of some obscure compatibility issue, I am RUNNING to the Tech Support Guy! I read a warning somewhere that one must be sure to have a machine that can have or run 64-bit drivers (?) even if you have 64-bit software. Until I get a definitive answer to these things, I feel immobilized and I've got a lot of editing to do! I hope one of you at TSG can provide an accurate and authoritative answer about these pesky details! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

So I accidently unplugged my computer while futzing with the mouse, and when I started it up it got to the XP Home log in screen. But instead of logging in, it did one of those scan disc things that gets rid of bad files and fixes errors. When I logged on, some stuff was messed up, nothing major...like internet settings, msn backrounds, etc. But my audio drivers apparently bit the dust. When I go to play music on Winamp it says, "Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration". So would new drivers solve el problemo? If so, can I get a linky? Thanks!

i have recently bought a samsung rv511 s01 laptop. last night i had an issue when i opened the web browser. all i got was a blank white screen. When i opened norton internet security it didn't open correctly. with not being used to windows 7 and only using it for about a week i thought the best thing to do would be use the recovery disk that came with the laptop. i thought it would just reset the computer to an earlier day, not so. it did a full install of windows 7, now i have no access to the internet, webcam, or any of the functions that were on the computer before hand. the recovery disk doesn't have the drivers for any of the hardware on it. all the pre installed software has vanished also. So the question is where do i go now to get the machine back to the way it was when i bought it?

Answer:Solved: Lost software & hardware after windows 7 install

Can you be more specific about the "recovery disk"? When I hear "recovery" I think of a set of Recovery DVDs (or CDs) that will "recover" the system back to factory defaults, including all drivers and bloatware. But you seem to be saying that maybe it's a Windows 7 Installation DVD.

You should be able to get the drivers from Samsung's web site. Install the chipset ones first.

So the question is where do i go now to get the machine back to the way it was when i bought it?Click to expand...

Many manufacturers will sell you a set of Recovery DVDs for a fair price.

hi
i have been doing extensive work on my computer for dazzzze... here iis the skinny... WINME , IEbrowser hijacked which i think i have back... my roblem now is my computer doesn't see my cd roms like it used to.

i wanted to restore it to factory settings. i couldn't get either drive to auto start the image disks and i tried many different ways to start.

i kinda don't want to do that now, because i went into the bios (i know either stupid or brave) and also bypassed a lot of startup junk and did step by step bootup and selective startup in msconfig.

i have just been adding them one at a time back to msconfig startup... it seems that most of them i am using again, but my machine is strangely quiet and not making nearly as much processing noise. It is so much faster and i don't really know why but i am not complaining about that

1. D drive might as well not exist... the light won't even come on.

2. E drive (cd burner) is reading some disks, but won't autostart. i can go into the files and folders of the cd in drive E: but I can't get it to autostart a progam so far that is all i know is wrong with them. previously they worked fine.

3. floppy drive A: won't format or reformat a disk 1.44, 3.5 ... i wanted to make a floppy boot disk I don't have a WINME disk - the only thing i have is the cd image restore to factory disks for this gateway setup and the drives won't read them.

I Have Nortons Internet security at the moment which scans for Spyware and ad-Ware on my computer. Does this cover me totally or do I need other Spyware detection software on My P.C?
Also if I do Have Other Spyware Detection Software will it conflict with Nortons? I have windows Xp Home.

Answer:Spyware And Ad-ware Detection Software

Using more than one anti-spyware program increases your protection coverage. No single program on the market can claim 100% detection/removal so using more than one is recommended. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes spyware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another.

As such, I would recommend that you use both Spybot and Ad-aware in addition to your other programs. Using them will not cause a conflict with Norton.

Software features: More toggle options in action centre especially data connection toggle, an health app by swiping to the right from the home screen, app sorting in menu and multitasking window.

Hi all, got a big prob with my daughters comp that seems to have come out of the blue.

Comp has started to shut down with the following symptoms:

Screen goes black.
Power on led(front panel) goes out
Hard drive led remains on constantly (ie; no flicker), by the sounds I hear it seems as though hard drive continues spinning but none of the clicky noises associted with writing.
Cpu cooling fan shuts down.
No power to dvd drive.

Some power obviously remains in the system, switching off by the front panel power switch shuts this power off as normal.

The comp is an e-machines 420 given to my daughter about 18 months ago, til now it has been very reliable.
I have tried a few things to resolve the issue but without success:

Replaced the front panel power switch.
Replaced main pc power cable with a known good one.
Replaced origional 250w psu with known working 500w psu.
Checked seating of all internal ide, power cables etc.
Removed, cleaned and visually inspected mobo, whilst not in perfect order most capacitors look fine (some bulging slightly at top, none burst).
Replaced keyboard with known good one.
Reseated memory stick.

I`ll add two attach 3 logs here and continue on next thread with observations and more logs.

Answer:pc crash h/ware, s/ware prob? not sure part1

pc crash h/ware, s/ware prob? not sure part2

The crash usually happens quite quickly after windows has loaded ( often before I enter my daughters log on password) but can happen either side of password entry and sometimes will stay stable for 10 minutes if I run applications but then again, sometimes not.

Comp is stable if I load bios(phoenix) setup screen before windows loads (left it running for three hours without problem)

Comp is more stable when run in safe mode (minimal). Out of about twenty runs in safe mode it has crashed perhaps four times. It is during safe mode that I installed and ran software to obtain the attached logs. I have also performed the cleaning procedure advised elsewhere on your forums.

Unfortunately we didn`t get given the windows restore cd for the comp so a re install of windows doesn`t seem possible.

I would very much appreciate any help that anyone can give.

Cheers

It's happening again! I've entered on some sites, searching for anti spy-ware programs. Since then, in IE my homepage it's changing automatically with this one : www.guarduptodate.net/. I've blocked this site, turned on my firewall to maximum security settings, but this page it's still there. Beside this, all kind of messages about my PC's security are entering, coming from www.virusblast.com/?aid=18 and other sites. Same thing was happening to me some months ago, and then I received some good instructions. I've downloaded ewido & HJthis, and I put here the HJ log:

Hi all! Just wondered if anyone has got any ideas how to get shot of the pop ups im getting. Ive run: Spy bot search and destroy, Microsoft anti-spyware, Spyware Doctor, Spyware blaster, Ad-aware 6, AVG Virus scan, Trend micro online scan, Registry Mechanic. These got rid of alot of spyware and a few viruses, but i cant get rid of all my problems. Which consist of pop ups, which try to connect to the internet if im offline and they can also put shortcuts on my desktop and of course pop up all the time when im browsing. None of the above programs show any problems so i am at a loss at the mo!

Cheers Azazel.

Hi

This computer seems to have some sort of ad-ware, which various programs (Win defender, Ad-aware, Spybot) have failed to detect. I get recurring popups, often for Winantivirus and other security software, but they're not exclusively security-related. I've created an HJT log, which should be attached.

Windows XP, popups occur both in IE7 and FF2 (according to what is the default browser of the user logged in).

Thanks in advance

Tom

Please does anyone reading this post know of any open source or freeware software that can be downloaded and burnt to a cdr or dvd so as to create a bootable disc and capable of checking system hardware and software at startup? I have a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 running Windows 7 which has developed a problem whereby immediately after the initial Windows 7 welcome screen it throws up a blue screen of death message, resulting in continual restart. I need to determine whether the fault lies with the operating system, in which case I'll re-install this from the original W7 disc, but if the problem lies with ram etc. then I'll need to sort this out first. I have used the systems own hard disk checker from bios, which runs and says that the disc is okay. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Ok I've got a couple of obnoxious ad programs that have weaseled their way onto my system. I don't know where or how but they've screwed up more than a few security programs and allowed more friends in. I got rid of the bulk of them but there are still a few who wont go. They wont show up on Ad-Aware or Spybot but I can find them in the Add/Remove Programs menu.

The evil one's are:
Home Search Assistant
Search Extender
and
Shopping Wizard

The unisntall programs are bogus and only create more holes. I can't find them on the hard drive and have combed through it a couple times.

And because I know how you guys love it here's a HijackThis log

In Windows 7 there is a Stereo Mix option under the Recording Tab.

I have VM Ware with Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.. but there is no Stereo Mix option listed. I have the disabled devices checked and it still doesn't show up. I'm using VM Ware Player Version 4.02

I have searched for this problem and have found others having this issue but have yet to find a fix for this.

Answer:Solved: VM Ware Sound Stereo Mix

Stereo Mix is not an option for Windows7. It's for Sound Card and because your Sound Card support Stereo Mix, It is available on your Windows 7.
But in VM Ware it's different. It doesn't use your Sound Card Driver , It just use a Standard Sound Card Driver so that you can hear and record, It may not support all your original Sound Card options.

I have followed instructions in other threads and dowloaded SD Fix which got rid of the nasty little trojan but when I start my computer it comes up with an error message. When I close the message box the computer seems to work as normal. From research on the internet I think it is a registry error message - something to do with PsKill. I tried system restore on quite a few dates but the computer won't let me restore. Can anyone help me get rid of the message? Is not being able to system restore related to this problem? I've copied the error message to a jpeg file and attached it to this thread- I think. I can't think of any other way of getting the message in the thread without writing it out word for word.

My operating system is Windows XP.

I have had problems with vundo/ad-ware for quite a while now. I have tried figuring out things on my own, but haven't been able to fix the problem. Here is my log. Would greatly appreciate me if someone could help me out. I have all the removal software, I just don't know what steps to take at getting rid of this problem once and for all. Thanks in advance!

Hello...

The state of my computer has been in steady decline. It all started when i got a message from my nortons internet security that winlogon.exe was trying to contact the internet...

I ran hijckthis, i ran spybot, i ran ad-aware. fixed items i thought needed to be fixed. I don't know if it was before or after all this, but i began getting pop ups from sites i know do not have pop ups, like my own. ran all the programs again. the same offenders keep popping up... i have posted my logs on this site but sadly no one had responded.

anyway, now every time i restart my computer, I get a dll error. every time it is a different dll. also, when on for an extended amount of time, say overnight, i lose internet connectivity, even though my cable modem is showing that there is lots of activity going on...

can anyone givew me a clue what's going on, or where i can begin looking? should i just scrap it all and reformat my computer?

thanks

I am planning to get a new computer with Windows 7 pre-installed on it. I am also going to ask the guys to install VM Ware player and within that install a Win XP operating system as I have some legacy programs that won’t run in Win 7.

Never having used Win 7 (other than a brief play on someone else’s laptop) nor VM Ware before, but having read much on both I have the following questions which I would like clarified so that I get the set up right from the start & don’t come back here with problems.

(1a) Is it possible to install Win 7 on either one drive or one partition of one drive and VM on another drive or another partition of the same drive as Win 7 or do they both have to be on the same drive and/or same partition of the one drive? I am asking this because as I understand it a system recovery/system repair/ system image replacement will only replace the Win 7 installation and the VM installation and everything on it will be lost.

(1a) Further to (1a), even if it is able to be installed on another drive or another partition, will this still get around the problem of any or all of the recovery situations?

(1c) If the answer to both of the above is yes, will VM still function in the normal way ie be able to drag & drop files between the two installations, both be able to access the LAN workgroup and “see” and be “seen” by other computers?

(2) Regardless of the answer to (1), what would be the best recommended method of disaster prevention and recovery... Read more

Hello guys.

I was originally receiving help on what I suspected was a spyware problem, as you can check the link to see my progress.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=74450

Currenlty, I am having problems with long boot times. It is taking anywhere from 50-120 seconds for my system to boot after the "Welcome" window. Of the known programs I have booted at the start (which include Dell Help, NIS, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, ewido, and my printer). All of those boot find except for NIS, which boots last and takes 35-50 seconds to boot after everything else. After I allow all programs to boot, I try to open Firefox using my desktop shortcut. Once I double click on that, it takes 30-40 seconds for a window to open up. I don't know what is the problem. Shadow Puter Dude has been helping me in the Spyware forum and recommended that I move my issues to here, as it seems to have a software problem. I am wondering if someone can assist me, as this possible software problem also could be the reason I am experiencing other difficulties with my PC (which is mainly discussed here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=73927 )

Thanks

Answer:Possible Software Problem (but hard to find ware is the problem)

Noticed that you haven't removed NIS as SPD suggested! Please try this as NIS causes problems for a lot of people, but not all. I would go as far as asking to uninstall all of your Norton/Symantec products, run a registry cleaner and see if it makes a difference in speed.

Before doing what I suggested, should you choose to do so, please download one of the free antivirus and a firewall program from the downloads section of Major Geeks. Avast and Sygate do a great job for me! Delete Norton/Symantec while offline, and install the antivirus and firewall apps that you chose before going back online.

You might have a problem deleting all the Norton/Symantec programs, as they firmly entrench themselves in your OS. Symantec offers a tool for removal of these hard to delete remants, and I belive that it is available for download from MG.

Please try the above and see if it helps your speed problem. If you have the installation CD for Norton/Symantec, it shouldn't be any problem deleting the freeware alternatives that I suggested ( easily removed from Add/Remove Programs ), and reinstalling your presently installed applications.

Hi All,
I am new to this forum and a beginner. I'm using Windows XP Pro on a Dell XPX. Problem: In 2006, I installed a freeware called Adware SE Personal. Some time later, I thought I uninstalled it. I am trying to install Charter Security Suite and there is a conflict. Charter tech asked me to read all of my programs. When I read Lavasoft SE Personal he advised it was causing the conflict and to uninstall it. There is no option for me to unistall this software. It is not listed in "My remove Programs" I followed some other advice on the NET saying go to my program files. I did and found Lava Soft with Adware SE Personal with Lang Plug ins and skins listed under it. In addition, I trued to open the unregaaw.exe file and it would not open. I tried to open the unwise.exe file and it opened a box saying could not open Install.log file. Can anyone tell e how to remove this LAva soft adwware se personal from my computer. Although not listed as an installed program I still have the remnants of the software on my computer. I appreciate any assistance this forum may provide. Thanks

I have windows XP 2002 with SP2. Tech Support helped me get my system running fine back in Jan 2009. I am now running avast home edition and StopZilla spyware. Over the last week, the computer has started to run VERY slow, especially on the internet, but also on non-internet work. A full scan with avast home edition claims to be virus free.

I am suspect that my registry needs to be cleaned up. But I am not very computer savvy. Is there a good free ware for cleaning up the registry? Thanks, Tim

I'm having some real issues with my Dell XPS 400 and I'm desperately seeking help. I'm running WinXP Pro and this pc
is only about 16 months old. It has the original factory installed ram (1 gig) , a 320 gig hard drive and the processor is an
Intel ViiV. I have been getting a blue error screen with ***Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check
/ Memory Parity Error - System was halted*** that lasted for a few hours. I had to hold the power button in for several seconds each time
to shut it down. I ran both the Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic tests, as well as the Memtest 86 , each several times. The results were always
"no memory errors". I attempted a few times, unsucessfully, using the F11 key to reach the Acronis recovery partition. I booted using my XP
disk but was unable to re-install. Windows would begin to load and then the blue screen with the same error message would occur. Finally,
I was able to access the Acronis recovery manager and restore my pc but on reboot it began to run ChkDsk. Now it keeps rebooting and running
a new disk check over and over and over..........................I have tried to cancel the ChkDsk using the keyboard but it keeps running. I'm at a loss, as to what else,
if anything I can do, (besides ripping my hair out by the roots)

Answer:Solved: HELP? Hardware Malfunction - Call your Hardware Vendor for Support - Parity Check

UPDATE: I was waiting for the Dell hardware diagnostics test results to finish. It took several hours and basically the same result as the memory tests. No hardware failure, I'm thinking motherboard?

I'm researching possible inventory options for my network. Auto software inventory is the requirement, but good hardware inventory is a huge plus.

I've used spiceworks, but I've had issues with it finding the same system multiple times ( and thus, adding to the number of "installed locations" ) that have never been adequately resolved. I'd love to hear personal experiences with different software packages.

I've got a laptop that needs OS updating. It has pointsec on it. My impression is that pointsec is both hard and software level encryption so it would have to be unencrypted before itsOS can be updated. Others are telling me it's just software level, I can format and proceed. Anyone have personal experience with this?

Answer:Pointsec: Hardware + Software or Just Software

I've used pointsec, if you don't need any data off the hard drive you can wipe and reinstall the OS.
