Keyboard and mouse work in BIOS but not xp

Question: Keyboard and mouse work in BIOS but not xp

Hello,

I need help!! I have a Dell Optiplex 470 which has USB ports and NO PS2 ports! The system boots to the XP logon screen but the keyboard and mouse are non response, they will not work at all. If I boot the system and use F8 the keyboard and mouse still will not work. Last known good configuration will not work either.

The keyboard and mouse will work in BIOS or if I boot to ubuntu on a memory stick the keyboard and mouse will work.

I have tried 3 different keyboards and 4 different types of mouse. I believe it to be a windows driver problem but I am at a loss as how I can fix it!!!

Please help!!!

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using computers for over 25 years now, and I have never run across a problem like this. Backstory: I built my current PC about a year ago. Everything worked perfectly until about 5 days ago. At that point, it needed to restart. I restarted it, and upon boot neither the mouse or keyboard would respond. I tried a different mouse and keyboard, they did not work either. I tried both of the mice and keyboards with another PC, and they worked fine. This absolutely rules out the problem being the inputs. Then, I noticed that the mouse and keyboard do work in BIOS. However, after exiting BIOS and booting, they stop responding altogether. I have gone into system recovery countless times and tried literally every recovery option listed, to no avail. Any suggestions to help would be GREATLY appreciated. For the past 5 days I have literally had a $3000 paperweight.

Answer:Mouse/Keyboard work in BIOS, they do not work once computer boots

Hi JamesKBoyd. Welcome to the Tenforums @JamesKBoyd

Any chance you can boot to Advance Startup menu and invoke System restore (assuming your inputs work in this mode.)

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

To get this process started you need two failed start ups. Power on, see spinning dots, hold power key until machine powers off. Repeat. On third start up Windows will detect the two failed attempts and start the menu.

I assume when you boot all other USB devices are disconnected (not that you should have to do this normally but while testing).

You will want to look into installing and using a tool like Macrium Reflect, free, reliable and very handy in situations like this.

Hi,

All of a sudden I'm having a very strange problem.

I have a G510 Keyboard and a Razer Mamba mouse which all of a sudden dont seem to be found by windows. They work just find in the BIOS and start up, but as soon as it goes into W7 they dont work at all. They are turned on and everything, but nothing is recognized.

I have them connected via USB to the M/B and they were working just fine last time I had used them.

I already attempted safe mode boot, safe mode with command prompt and a CMOS clean with no luck.

Anyone come across this before?

PS: Already tried another mouse and keyboard and they werent being picked up either. As a matter fact, its not recognizing anything plugged via USB.

Answer:Mouse and Keyboard dont work in W7, but work in BIOS

Since your USB connections aren't working properly do you have or can you find a mouse or keyboard that plugs into the PS2 port on the computer? Assuming you have a PS2 port on the computer.

Hello everybody, I recently have gotten computer parts and put together a PC, after a delay in the mail I have received the graphics card and installed it into the tower, before I got the card I was using the computer perfectly fine with the CPU graphics that are integrated so I know that all of my hardware works, or did. When I put in the graphics card there was an issue with it showing up on the monitor, so I took out the motherboard battery with guidance from a friend and reset the CMOS and I have it displaying now with a HDMI to DVI-D.

When I turn the computer on it turns on and then turns off instantly after the fans and such start to go, it does this once, then fully turns on and I press the delete key to load the bios, after that I load windows and when I get out of the bios all usb ports stop working, mouse and keyboard stop and im stuck looking at the windows 8 screen showing date and time and internet connection, I've been looking online and still am yet to find a solution because everybody else that has this issue can somehow access their desktop. I can't. When I load from the windows CD i get into the starting menu for loading the operating system, but again, no mouse or keyboard so I can't keep going from there.

I removed the graphics card which initially caused the problem, upon start up it restarted 3 times and then turned on, in the windows loading screen where i was stuck before the keyboard LED's are lit up but the mouse is not. the ke... Read more

Answer:Keyboard/Mouse doesn't work outside of Bios

Have you tried both the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports for the keyboard and mouse? Maybe the USB 3.0 isn't working correctly due to drivers or compatibility with the Razer gear or drivers. Or can you borrow a basic USB keyboard and mouse?

I also see a BIOS update on the Asus website that addresses "USB Compatibility" and "System Stability" in another. If you do not already have the 1603 BIOS update you may wish to update it that one. You can update the BIOS through the BIOS itself, go into the Advanced section and use EZ Flash and load it from a USB stick; it must be extracted first though.

As the title says i reformatted my computer yesterday to give it a fresh start. Keyboard and Mouse were both working just fine until after i reformatted & reinstalled Windows. Keyboard now responds at ONLY the BIOS screen, and if i use F8 to open the boot list it will go to the list but freeze the keyboard. Both seem to still be getting power as the lights on the Mouse still come on and the Keyboard lights come on at first boot.
How can i fix this? I have no access to safe mode / cmd, and I'm not sure if i can use them in Setup. I haven't tried yet. They are both PS/2 so i really don't understand this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Reformatted, Keyboard & Mouse don't work after BIOS screen

I wonder if there's a IRQ conflict. You could check the BIOS.

How can I get it so my mouse and keyboard work in windows, safe mode, and the bios without denigrating the performance of my 20 3-8 TB USB 3.0 HD. I've seen out there that the performance of these devices is increased by disabling USB Legacy USB Support"

For example "Disable Legacy USB Support unless you need to use a USB keyboard in DOS, OS/2, or Linux"

However when I do disable Legacy USB support my USB mouse and keyboard don't work in safe mode at all.

Hey guys,
So I've been struggling with this problem all day, and there are many forums around the internet like this, but none are exactly like mine, and I've tried a lot of the troubleshooting options that seem to work for others but haven't fixed my problem. Firstly, I've recently put together a computer and everything works fine, even the keyboard and mouse work in BIOS. Now I've gone out and got my hands on an OEM copy of Windows 7 to install (buying the retail here is now close to impossible since Windows 8 was released a little while back) and now I've come home to install it, and I noticed during the installation I could only use my keyboard to enter details, mouse didn't work, so I had to tab, space and enter my way through. Until I come to enter the product key, keyboard is still fine, then I realize the odd key isn't working (without giving too much away, my H and 0 keys), which I find odd as all the others are. I end up skipping this part and finish the installation, to now where I try and connect to the internet, but putting in my isp password is impossible as it contains an H, and that key isn't working. I restart, unplug them both, plug them back in, and now I'm stuck at my loading screen, as now my keyboard and mouse have just stopping working entirely, which is odd as the light on the bottom of the mouse is on and so are various lights across my keyboard. After trying a few troubleshooting options (will mention below) I'm left wondering, hardware issue? (mouse... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Mouse and keyboard work fine in BIOS, but not in windows 7

did you install your motherboard drivers?

go to device manager in windows and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks or red x by your keyboard or mouse/usb devices. Type devmgmt.msc in run box to show device manager.

EDIT was any operating system on it before you installed windows 7?

If I boot up into BIOS the keyboard and mouse on the computer I'm working on works just fine. However, as soon as windows 7 logon page comes up—nothing. I put an Ubuntu LiveCD in and of course, K&M work fine. So what is the solution to this problem short of re-installing Windows.

I hooked the HDD up to a computer and ran a check disk w/repair and it did say a few repairs were made. However, the problem still persists.

The computer is a Dell Studio XPS desktop. Originally my client (according to the Windows COA sticker) had Windows 7 Home Prem. installed but the logon window now says 7 Ultimate. Assuming he upgraded, could this have anything to do with the problem?

I have a restore disk but apparently no Restore points were made and the disk says it can't repair the system.

Help!

OK so I was watching TV on my PC last night, woke up to find PC had restarted itself, I shutdown from the login screen. Now when trying to bootup, it gives a warning, prompting me to run startup repair, if I do this it runs & gives option to do system restore, but I cannot do it as the mouse & keyboard won't work! If I try and start windows normally I get the BSOD with "Page Fault in nonpaged area" warning at the top. Have tried booting from Windows 7 DVD but again the mouse & keyboard won't work, they only work in the BIOS, would appreciate some help, thanks!

Answer:Page Fault in nonpaged area, keyboard/mouse wont work outside BIOS

Well now you say your keyboard and mouse only works in bios but what you don't tell is what (exactly) is your keyboard and mouse.

What mouse and keyboard are you using?:?

Do you have a PS2 keyboard?

From what I found you should have this.

Odd issue, been playing with computers since the 90s and never seen this happen. All of a sudden like my keyboard and sometimes my mouse are unresponsive at the windows 7 login screen. Sometimes the mouse works, sometimes it doesnt. If it doesnt work initially on power up it has worked every time so far after a reboot. Keyboard works just fine in the bios and just fine in windows after i use the onscreen keyboard to log in if the mouse is working but no response on the login screen. Capslock/numluck and any other button that should activate or change lights on the keyboard have zero effect when the keyboard is unresponsive.

Anyone ever seen anything like this? Ive just recently formatted/reinstalled a couple times without issue. Have been playing around with some virtual machine and vpn programs. Using avast antivirus this time around, used avg before, nothing else should really be different. Ive formatted hundreds of times and never seen this, pretty sure hardware is not the cause as it works fine before/after login screen. No strange new software that I can think of other than a vpn software program which ive only used in a virtual machine environment. Unless I somehow got a virus or malware that avast and malwarebytes cant detect Im kinda stumped, cant seem to figure this one out on my own, any thoughts? I spose the easy answer is just format again but I hate having a problem I cant solve.

I should mention i did try uninstalling avast as would be the first obvious step ... Read more

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue.  However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

Answer:X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

SOLVED!  I simply had to update the drivers in the device manager.  For some reason they were corrupt and it could not load them.  Simple fix, just took too much thought and digging to find solution.

On my laptop Satellite L20 not working keyboard and touchpad, but keyboard work in BIOS, USB-ports also not working (USB mouse).

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

Ref: ThinkCentre A50  8148-22U. PS2 Keyboard(s) don't work while in BIOS, SAFE MODE, OR RESTORE DEFAULTS. I can't configure anything in the BIOS, and I have no video after boot-up. Arrow keys, Enter key, ESC key are all dead! I'm still attempting to get video display working again. It has only a 'black screen' after booting up to just after the Windows logo screen. Now, even though I can see the BIOS display, none of the keyboard keys work at all. Therefore, I can't change any video settings, nor can I get the system to restore everything back to "Factory Defaults." I've tried two different PS2-style keyboards. Neither one is recognized, for some reason. Is there some kind of FLOPPY DISK UTILITY that I can purchase that might allow me to boot from it, bypassing whatever problems that are preventing me from resetting this computer to factory defaults? Please, can somebody respond to this issue? Thank you,Larry

Keyboard and USB dont work in windows but work in BIOS, i have also tried a ps/2 keybaord also not working in windows, i have tried safe mode, disabling driver sig enforcement, using different mice/keyboards, restored bios to default settings, ran sfc /scannow no errors detected, and still no luck any input would be amazing. I wanted to do a upgrade repair install of windows but you can only do that inside windows , basically trying everything before i have to wipe the HD and reinstall windows, i ran memcheck as well and no errors also as a sidenote it says my gpu is not found, when i have my monitor plugged into it, i am still receiving internet from ethernet.

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...
Clean Windows 10 Pro install is done 5 times.Used the  DELL Command Update to install all drivers and patches.Issues keep existing...

Answer:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

Hello. 2 days ago, I was uninstalling Kaspersky Internet Security, after reboot mouse and keyboard don't work (kb is ps/2 and mouse USB) and after turning off the PC with power button, keyboard was still on, and I could turn on the computer with any button on keyboard.

Never had something like that.

Keyboard works in Bios. I disable option to turn on the computer with keyboard - that doesn't change a thing.

First what i did is put CD with win xp turn on recovery consol and from there I replaced files (sam, security, system, default, software) from restore folder with date before this issue, but that dosen't fix my problem. mouse and keyboard still don't work, which is odd.

Then I repleced the driver i8042sys, but this also do nothing.

Thing is, in this installation mouse and keyboard also don't work and I can't finish repair because I can't give a command to proceed. I've check different mouses and keyboards with USB and PS/2 ports, also check all the ports. Nothing.

Hello, mehow89 and welcome to TSG.

I've taken the trouble to put your post into a certain paragraph structure, lest any reader gets as breathless as your original version sounded. And just gives up after reading the first 10 per cent.

I think your English is fairly good and should now be more easy to decipher.

Although "shouting" down keyboard and PC is rarely a solution and merely annoys the neighborhood.

But readers may now also understand that you meant "shutting down"

mouse and keyboard don't work and all I was doing was installing updated drivers using driver max which I have been using the free edition and it's been working great. Even when a new driver doesn't work properly it would automatically rollback to old driver and tell you it didn't install correctly. Then I would delete it from list. Now I was installing something called a H.I.D. and the install went with out a hitch but I then noticed my keyboard numlock lite went off I then noticed my mouse did not work either. Then after windows discovered a new driver was installed it came up with "Synaptics USB Human Interface Device" successfully installed. A few seconds later same message pops up and adds this comment, device not working correctly some of your other devices might not work properly.

Welcome to SevenForums!

-Did you tried unplug the devices, stop the computer and re-plug everything and restart the computer?
-Check the battery of each connected devices
-Does the light on the connected key still blinking?
-Run a full scan for malwares & virus
-Test on another computer if does works
-Then, if not go to the retailler ask and test the wireless/bluetooth key for an exchange.

I just recently received my computer back from my neighbor who supposedly fixed my Windows XP E-Machine T-5212. I got a virus on the computer and the only way to fix it was to install new software. I had Windows XP Media Edition on it but my neighbor installed Windows Professional Edition. I hooked up my wireless keyboard and mouse to the correct ports in back and they wont work. I even tried a wired mouse and keyboard in the ports and they don't work either. From what I was told my neighbor installed a completely new motherboard because my old one either burned out or wasn't installed correctly. My wireless keyboard and mouse run through the same cord - one plugs into a USB slot and the other is green that plugs into the mouse port. Batteries are brand new so there shouldn't be any reason for it not to work. I am decently computer savvy and I know my basics. Someone please help I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

My buddy has a problem with his computer. He recently uninstalled his nvidia drivers to install new ones. It then would not boot into windows. It said it was missing a system32 file when he booted, I believe it said system 32. He cannot get into windows normally, but he can get into safe mode. Only his keyboard and mouse don't work in safe mode. They do work in the bios though. He has tried a different mouse and keyboard and also a PS/2 mouse and keyboard. I am thinking that when he uninstalled the nvidia drivers, it wiped some system drivers out as well. How would he go about getting this working again?

Answer:keyboard/mouse won't work in XP

Sounds like some basic drivers got hosed. Best bet is a running a repair install using the Windows XP CD. This will retain all user settings and files, and some select programs may need to be reinstalled. It will also return the windows part of the system back to original, which should work for the kb/mouse.

I had a customers computer that had some spyware on it. The computer is a dell xps 400 which has no ps2 ports. I can't get the keyboard and mouse to work. I removed the hard drive and hooked it up to another computer and started spyware removal. the keyboard and mouse work in bios but when Windows XP startes up they don't work and i get the new hardware wizard. The problem is that you have to have one of the devices working to finish the wizard.
Looking on other tech sites they suggested that it might be corrupt drivers. I tried booting into the command console and extracting the drivers but it didn't work.
any suggestions?

Do this:

- Try to test keyboard and mouse in F8 Mode (press F8 before windows start) and select Safe Mode.

- Start normally and wait 2 o 3 minuts mean windows install drivers for keyboard and mouse.

I hope you will tell us if is solved.

"He says he has put the recovery disc in but it boots straight through to windows" First boot device is probably set to HDD in the BIOSType of KB and Mouse? PS2, USB, wireless? The fact that is sill booting means the PC isn't fried maybe just some corrupt files on the Harddrive Needs to try a repair of XP Maybe try a different type of keyboard to start the repair. My computer was operating fine until I unplugged the Logitech USB mouse from the front USB to move it to a rear USB. Now niether my mouse or keyboard will function. I've tried another mouse with no success. I've restarted the computer using a restart button on the tower, no success there either. When I turn it on my screen shows no error messages and looks normal.

I tested my USB using a flash drive. Usually the computer will recognize it and will ask me what to do with it (i.e. open a folder etc.). It does not recognize that I put the drive in.

My computer is running on XP. It was built about two years ago by a tech guy. I have no reboot CD.

I am a novice at computers, what can I do to even access the unit to address this problem?

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NE mobo and use a Logitech MX700 cordless mouse attached to a usb port. When I attach my keyboard to the PS2 port windows reports that the device cannot start and it won't work. If I uninstall it and reboot it works until next time. If I plug my mouse into the PS mouse port the both work but the mouse says for best results it should be plugged into a usb port. At the moment I have an old PS2 mouse plugged in and am using the logitech on a usb port. It is working but I wondered if anyone could suggest another solution please?
Thank you in advance

Answer:PS2 keyboard won't work with usb mouse

"At the moment I have an old PS2 mouse plugged in and am using the logitech on a usb port"

Confused by this statement. Two mice plugged in? Or do you also have a logitech keyboard? I have the same mouse. With the adapter it's plugged into the PS2 port and has been for years.
Works fine. Although someone may have the answer to your problem, I won't worry about it and just leave the Mx700 plugged into the PS2 port. Do you have a lot of USB devices plugged in and are you using the MB USB ports or a hub?

I'm having A software issue. I have tested my PC with both USB and Standard Mouse and Keyboards. The USB Mouse is the only one working.

What caused the problem?

I have an idea as to where it may have started.
I loaned one of my Computers to A friend for A couple of months.
Out of gratitude, he upgraded my OS from perfectly working and legitimate copy of XP, to A pirated copy of XPpro. I'm not exactly sure how he went about it.

I want to reset my computer, but I'm not sure how to do it without A keyboard.

Any help would greatly appreciated.

Answer:Help! Keyboard and Mouse will not work.

Stay away from pirated versions. They will cause you problems. If you still have your original XP installation disc, reformat your HD from DOS and reinstall you legit version of XP. If your USB mouse is working, you should be able to backup your data before doing the reformat. If you have a second HD move your data there. If not, and you have a CD burner, move them to a CD, otherwise, move them to floppies. It's tedious, but better than losing your data. Once you've backed up your data, run start/run/cmd and enter format C. Otherwise, reboot and keep pressing F8. This will give you the option to go to command mode Again enter format C.

I have a cpu (Dell Optiplex) running windows XP Pro that I just saved from the recycle pile. It's not that old and could be a good machine. However, a service takes care of these cpus and makes them so that people can't add anything to the cpus such as more memory or new keyboards or mice. Does anyone know how to unblock something like this? I tried restore factory settings in bios but that didn't work. Please let me know if you can help.

Answer:Mouse and Keyboard won't work

Hi wimtalker, and welcome to BleepingComputer.

In the movie "Cool Hand Luke" there is a famous quote... "What we have here is failure to communicate". And I suspect that is part of what is happening here.

First, when you refer to a CPU, are you referring to a PC (Personal Computer)?

What service are you referring to?

Adding RAM or making any other physical changes that don't involve changes to the BIOS that the manufacturer may have locked can be made.

Would you please post the model of the computer?

Hi,

I've got Windows XP Home installed on a PC. The owner of the PC, after Windows prompted him to install some sort of mouse/keyboard software used with new hardware, lost the use of his mouse and keyboard. This may or may not be the problem, as he's had the same mouse/keyboard/computer combination for about 2 years.
I can't get past the welcome/log in screen (the same thing even happens in safe mode). Both the keyboard and the mouse are plugged in via the green and purple ports on the back of the computer (sorry, I can't remember what that's called at the moment). The mouse is optical and my brother (the computer owner) says that the red light on the bottom of the mouse came on in Safe Mode, but it still would not work (nor would the keyboard).

Any and all help would be very much appreciated.

I have an old computer probably about 5 or 6 years old but I didn't make note of the brand. I have a few that have been used for workstations and one of them recently started beeping really fast while booting during the memory check but would go through post and but would finally hang while windows was starting.

Tried some different memory, with same result. But if you unplug the keyboard & mouse or at least one of the two, you don't get the rapid beeps during the memory check and it starts windows 2000 normally. Kind of sucks without a either the key board or mouse though?

Tried another keyboard & mouse but nothing changed.

The computer is old so I don't want to waste too much time on it but has anyone else ever had this happen?

I think I had something similar once and reloaded the os & then it worked again.

thanks

The USB Keyboard & mouse work outside the OS in the bios or if I boot to a diagnostic screen. Both the mouse and keyboard stop working (lights go out) as soon as the OS hits the splash screen during bootup. The keyboard and mouse also don't work in safe mode. This is a Dell XPS 200 Running WinXP Media edition sp2. Diagnostic mode can be accessed and all USB, keyboard and mouse functions pass diagnostics.

This computer was getting a Stop 24 BSOD and I had to physically remove the HD and connect it to another computer so I could run chkdsk. Once chkdsk finished and the HD was moved back to the original computer it booted all the way up but neither the mouse or keyboard works. Windows firewall is preventing me from getting into it remotely so I am stuck. The computer is just sitting on the Welcome screen.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have information on my hardrive i need to get. I have a laptop i thought maybe somehow i could connect to access it?
Any ideas please on getting my computer working, the screen with everything on it is on the moniter by the way & it all reboots up fine, just cant get to operate it
Many thanks in advance

Answer:Cant get mouse & keyboard to work

The keyboard has to be connected before you power on the computer. (You can't switch keyboards when the computer is on or it won't recognize the change) So try the second keyboard again.

Plug in the keyboard and then reboot and then see if the keyboard works.

So, this spring I spilled water on my laptop.  I opened everything up and dried it out for a day or two with a fan.  When I put everything back together it worked pretty well except the left shift key stopped functioning.  Everything has been fine since then until....my computer became completely non-functional yesterday.  When I try to click on anything it pops up and then immediately disappears.  The same thing happens if I use the keyboard to navigate.  Shutting the computer down (which by the way took about 10 mins) fixed the problem for a minute or two, but other than that I can't do anything with the computer.  If anyone has any ideas of how I could fix this problem or why this would have happened I'd be very grateful.  Thanks, Anna.  I guess it might also be worth mentioning that a series of beeps are emitted when booting up.  This happens sometimes, but not always.Dell Inspiron 5100, 3.5 yrs old

My computer was working fine this morning, then it went into hybernation mode. I tried moving the mouse, but nothing happened, so I rebooted. It went to the welcome screen and neither the mouse (serial) nor the keyboard (usb) would work.

I tried the keyboard and mouse (also serial) and the keyboard (serial) from another computer and they wouldn't work either.

I cannot get into the BIOS settings because the keyboard won't let me push F2. It won't let me get into the boot menu because it won't let me push F10. I tried the restore disk, but it asks me to press R to restore and none of the keys work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Keyboard and mouse won't work

At first when I read this I thought you may want to try disconecting any peripherals, usb's etc. and that may solve the conflict. But since they won't work on another PC, It could be something else, could you reach the post on the other pc. Its unlikely for mouse and keyboard to be damaged like together.

Here is the skinny. I was using my computer today and went out for a bit, and when I came back, the mouse and keyboard did not work. It does that sometimes when my moniter goes into power saving mode, and when I reboot, the problem is fixed. This time however, I rebooted and it still did not work. The mouse and keyboard were on and detected, but would not respond to any mouse movemet, mouse clicks, or keyboard commands, so I could not enter windows. I decided to boot into safe mode, and did. Even in safe mode, they did not work. I noticed that the keyboard and mouse worked fine in BIOS and bootup screens and pretty much anything before loading windows. I then noticed that the mouse and keyboard turned off at some point during the windows loading process, which they did not do before. It is noteworthy to mention that I got a BSOD with the IRQL_driver not equal to or less than error before, but ignored it and kept using my computer, as it was not a repeatable error that I had noticed. So I decided maybe it was just the ports, and to switch to different USB ports. This also had no effect. I cannot run the CHKDSK as I cannot use it without a keyboard or mouse... I also ran the built in hardware checking tool, and it found nothing wrong with the USB ports. Could this be a driver conflict of some sort? If so how can I fix it without booting into windows?

My comp is a Dell XPS400 running Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2.

Answer:Mouse and Keyboard DO NOT WORK

What you have now has a technical term for it. It's known as "A Mess"
Not your fault, really: You didn't know what to do and so you did what you thought was the right thing.

What you should have done is run anti-mallware software (Sybot S&D TX, Spyblaster, AdAware SE) or a specific iMesh removal tool. (if there is one).
(I have no idea what iMesh is, but I'm assuming its yet another peice of malware/spyware/adware junk)

But, it's too late for that. Now you've got a mess in your system registry and more than likely you also have an infected (maliciously modified) kernel.

What to do? Well, I hope you backed up your files before you did whatever it ... Read more

I just gave a friend of mine an older computer that hasn't been used in about 18 months. The last time it was used there were no issues. But, when I hooked it up for him neither the mouse nor the keyboard worked in the PS/2 ports. He bought a new mouse that uses a USB port and it worked. So now he is going to try a keyboard that uses USB. But, this will take up all of his USB ports and he wont be able to use his thumb drive with the computer.

So, my question is this -- Is there a way to get the PS/2 ports up and running again with out taking it in to be repaired?

Any and all help/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Keyboard & Mouse won't work

Try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling the latest version from the manufacturers website.

When you turn the computer on boot to BIOS with the problematic kb + mouse plugged in. To boot to BIOS you usually tap F2. Does the keyboard respond in BIOS? If so then you do not have a faulty controller or keyboard, it will be a problem with the drivers or OS. To remedy you could then install a fresh OS which should sort it out for you.

Answer:Win XP not detecting Mouse and Keyboard - BIOS does

Hi

Which ones are they.. make/model?
Have you tested them on any other computer to see if they work?

You may need the drivers that come with them in the CD or from manufacturers website, if MS doesn't provide them.

Can you check in Start>Run>type: devmgmt.msc, hit enter, under Keyboard and Mice to see if they're detected, and if so, right-click>properties to see if its says its working properly and under "Resources" tab to see if there are any conflicts too.

I may have been somewhat of an idiot ...

Ever since I've gotten Win 10 I had this issue with my keyboard where it wouldn't work after a shutdown. I had to bend down and re-plug it's USB every time I booted up my PC. I was trying to fix this issue and may have messed around a bit too much, as I've disabled an USB Controller (I think it was called?) in the BIOS, hoping that would fix the issue, only to have both my keyboard AND mouse (both USB) not working at all. My keyboard and mouse do not work. I can get into bios but when my computer tries to boot into Windows the mouse and keyboard stop working. I have tried wired and USB and PS2 keyboards. I have reset the CMOS. It must be something on the motherboard as even if you take the hard drive out the mouse still does not work. if you try and reinstall Windows 7, you cannot get past the prompts to select options to install as the keyboard is not working.

I can't go into Windows safe mode as Windows needs repairing and I can't repair it because I can't select the options on the screen because the keyboard and mouse are not working

I'm really stuck on this as I have explored all options and without having control of a mouse and keyboard you can't select any options 2 do anything. I don't know how I would install USB drivers to the motherboard .I don't even know if that's an option but I don't have the ability to select anything on the screen except in BIOS. It must be something on the motherboard it must be some setting in it somewhere, please can you help. As I said, the keyboard and mouse only work in the bios and anything else it does not.

I am running Windows 7 with an Asus motherboard and an i7 Intel hi spec PC

Answer:Keyboard and mouse not working except in BIOS

If it's working in the BIOS, it's likely not a hardware (ie: motherboard) issue (or it would also not be working in the BIOS). As it stops when loading into Windows, it's a Windows issue.

To do a repair, you will likely need to boot from the (Windows) disc.

Try continuiously moving the mouse as Windows starts to load.

I just started experiencing this problem after a restart this morning. No mouse, no keyboard, and it seems like none of the USB ports are working when the computer is booted to Windows 10 desktop. I read that this might be because I have fast boot enabled and all the drivers are not loading. Mouse and keyboard work fine in BIOS (Asus board). Even in safe mode, I don't have mouse/keyboard in Windows. I don't have the recovery disk and system restores fail. I did create a Windows USB drive using the media creation tool, but that didn't help either.

I have not tried plugging in a PS2 mouse yet because I don't have one. My data is still all on the hard drive, so should I just order an external hard drive adapter, transfer my files, and reformat?

Hello SF Members!

Now, I'm back from long holiday, and have to ask something and have problem.
Like title say : I can't use keyboard and mouse in BIOS.

That problem start some days ago. Before this there wasn't any problem, all worked very well. But yesterday, when I entered in BIOS, mouse cursor is at bottom, and can't move it, and keyboard don't work (I can use mouse and keyboard in BIOS)...

How to fix that problem ?

Motherboard is ASUS P8H61-M LX2.

Thanks in advance.
Trinty

Answer:{PROBLEM} I can't use keyboard and mouse in BIOS

The first thing I would try is a CLRTC or hard reset.

Legacy CLRTC Procedure
Note all your current BIOS settings
Shut down the computer > remove the power cord.
Remove the 3v battery.
Move the CLRTC jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3.
Touch a metal part of the case and Press and Hold the reset button for approx. 30 seconds to discharge all power from the board.
Put the CLRTC jumper back on pins 1-2.
Replace the 3v battery > replace the power cord > boot.
Immediately go back into BIOS and reset all your preferred settings. If the CLRTC worked you will need to reset the date and time.
From your motherboard's web page, it seems we don't need to remove the battery anymore. YMMV.

I have dell dimension 2400 xp home ser pac 2.pentium 4 dual processors 2.4ghz,40 gb hard drive
It has symtac anti virus,Ccleaner, adaware se,spybot search and destroy. It was logged on the other day and a message came up that symtac could not scan incomming email messages. None come in anyway. It said click here on a link to go to thier support.
This is my moms pc,she has dell wireless mouse and keyboard, after the message she could not get the mouse or keyboard to work. I got it here and I have a standard dell keyboard and mouse
(wired) hooked up to it and it does not show a pointer/cursor to move around on the desktop to do anything. I tried safe mode, the keyboard works there,I can move up and down on the high lighted lines, when I started in safe mode and the log in screen came up ( administrators, owner )
but no cursor to highlight owner to log in. In normal boot it will go to the desktop, load the programs the quick launch bar and everything but the pointer/cursor. So I am stuck not being able to do anything. I tried f12 to load the hard disk/dr c. No luck. I tried at setup to go bach to defaults with alt and f ( I think that was the configuration) I read it and went straight and did it.
I am stuck looking for ideas.Thought about Boot to utility partion, but did not want to loose all mom's stuff. I also did last known good configuration, no luck, same thing. So... Thanks to anyone who jumps in here. http://images.techguy.org/smilies/confused.gif

I was shutting down my computer and right after I hit shutdown I turned off my external soundcard that is plgged in via firewire. (Soundcard is powered by power adapter not the firewire). Since then whenever I boot up I get my desktop in Windows XP, but my mouse and keyboard down't work. My initial thought is maybe the firewire shorted out the motherboard? The firewire plugs into an onboard port not a separate PCI slot with firewire. Maybe it's Windows, but I just don't know. I tried getting to the bios bofore Windows lauches and the keyboard won't even work to get me there. Is my Motherboard onboard port fried?

I have a few hard drives that are all running on xp. When I hook them up (separately) to my computer they work fine with the exception of one. It will load but at the welcome screen the mouse and keyboard won't respond. Keyboard and mouse are good cause they work fine with the other hard drives. I have tried recovery console and ran fixboot and fixmbr with no changes but like I said it does load it's just the mouse and keyboard won't respond. I have done chkdsk and copied Ntldr and Ntdetect.com with no results. Is there something  that I am overlooking. What else can I try?

A friend of mine bought a Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop V2.0 Keyboard & Mouse USB/PS2 combo on my recommendation and it's acting well wierd and therefore making me look a clown, but that's not a first :?

Basically, she plugged mouse & keyboard combo in, followed the instructions in the .pdf file that told her to download the intellipoint software and install, hit the sync buttons and voila, the mouse and keyboard worked fine. No problem there.

However, every time since then that she boots up her pc, it's hit and miss whether the mouse/keyboard will work or not. She often will have to reboot (ie hold in the power button) on her pc up to 4 times before the mouse/keyboard work ok. Sometimes (like once in 5 boots) it works first time.

The wierd thing is the usb transmitter with the 3 flashing lights on top; if when the pc boots up there are no lights, the combo works fine; if one of the lights stays lit, they don't work.

Any ideas?

Answer:Wireless MS keyboard/mouse don't 'always' work

Many people experience this type of problem. A lot of it has to do with electrical interference and/or radio and TV. The electrical lines in the wall messed up mine. You might first try making sure that there are no electrical cords, radio, TV near by. If that doesn't work try moving the computer to a different location and farther away from the monitor.

Hello SevenForums Community
I have been trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate but mouse & keyboard wont work as soon as I get to the installation screen ( where I chose the language ). I have installed the same ISO on the same system several times before, only this time it doesn't work!
My PC is custom build and the specs can be found at my profile.
I have tried to plug mouse and keyboard to different USB hubs including USB 2.0 and 3.0 with no luck. Also USB support in Legacy mode is enabled.
P.S. I use portable Pendrive to install, my PC uses the UEFI framework and I dont have access to any mouse with PS/2 cable.
Thank you in advance.

I recently change my Keyboard and Mouse. I changed from Wireless to normal keyboard and mouse. My Wireless Keyboard and mouse used 1 USB port, now that I've changed back my Mouse/Keyboard doesn't work. My mouse and keyboard only work in my USB ports. I really can't figure out what's wrong with the ports, they don't even give power to my Keyboard and Mouse, however my bothers mouse gets power but doesn't work.

I have a 450w power supply and a MSI motherboard(old one).

Any help would be great!

I'm working on a friends computer, it's probably about 6 years old. Windows Xp ProThe problem is the keyboard and mouse do not work when the login screen loads up, The connections are USB for both mouse/keyboard. I have confirmed that they both work on other computers. The keyboard works on Post, I am able to access the bios. There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary . Everything that needs to be enabled is.I have tried all the available usb ports (6 of them) and no luckAll safe modes are the same thing, no mouse/keyboard.They don't have a recovery disc, I know windows restore is active but I can't access it because the mouse/keyboard doesn't work.Any ideas?

Answer:Mouse and Keyboard don't work at login

Since the USB keyboard works in BIOS the legacy USB support is enabled and there is nothing wrong with the hardware.Connect a PS/2 keyboard & mouse. At least then you might have a chance of re-installing USB drivers or using system restore.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

Hi guys,
My mouse for my laptop stopped working so I borrowed my girlfriend's. It went through the normal driver installation business and asked me to reboot to finish it. I did, and now neither the new mouse, my laptop's trackpad, my keyboard or an entirely different mouse work within Windows -- everything works fine in the BIOS and in Windows' recovery mode. I did a system restore which did nothing, I got it to boot into safe mode and couldn't use my keyboard to log in, I can't seem to get into Ubuntu, and I know that plugging in a mouse shouldn't make a computer completely unusable. Any ideas?
This is on Windows 8.1 by the way.
Thank you!

Answer:[SOLVED] Mouse and Keyboard do not work

Hello,

Do you have your Windows 7 disc handy? If so I would boot from that, go into Startup Repair and try a System Restore.

OR

If your Keyboard works during boot then tap F8 until you see the Advanced boot menu and try going into Safe Mode

Let me know

My power supply died one night and computer would not boot. Bought new PS and hooked it up. Computer boots fine, keyboard works to get me into setup & boot menus but keyboard and mouse do not work at all once XP boots. Safe mode has same results. Tried different keyboard and mouse and same result. Both keyboards and mice work fine on other computers (one XP SP2 and one Vista).

Have PC Tools Firewall and it shows internet activity OUT as maxed out while I am looking at my desktop. Unplugged router and need help. Computer worked fine prior to PS going dead. Very clean (2 mo. from clean boot/ wipe and very regular antivirus (AVG) and adaware scans as well as Spybot) as far as I know, but I cannot check without help.

Please help me get my computer working! Thanks!

I am looking to get a KVM switch. All the ones I have seen are either PS/2 or USB, but I have a PS/2 keyboard and a USB mouse. what is the solution? Other than the obvious of getting a usb keyboard. I really do not want to do that since I just bought the keyboard I have only 6 months ago. Any help is greatly appreciated

Answer:a KVM switch to work with a USB mouse and PS/2 keyboard?

Get a USB to PS/2 adapter or the reverse for one of the devices.

So I was uninstalling avast free because it was running my CPU at max. I then tried to install bitdefender but every website I went to said unsecured and wouldn't let me access it. So I restarted, after the boot it went straight to an automatic repair. After it asks me to select account but both my mouse and keyboard turn off at this screen. They work during the boot, but as soon as it starts repairing they go dark. I'm running Windows 10. Any idea what I can do?

Hi. First post here, so please excuse me if I've posted this in the wrong subforum.

When playing games, I can't use the keyboard and click on the mouse at the same time. I have to first stop using the keyboard, then wait a few seconds, then be able to click with the mouse.

Any ways to fix this? It's really irritating when playing, especially with those shooter games. Sniping isn't really my speciality

Thanks,
B

Hello everyone!

Yesterday I was working on my desktop, and Windows Update decided to pop up and install some automatic updates. I put it off by a few hours, so I could finish up my work and go to sleep. When I next tried to use the computer, I realized that somehow Windows Vista could not start. Once it got past the initial screen where I could access BIOS and everything, the computer would just automatically restart.

So I pulled out my installation disk, popped it into the drive, and did a repair on my computer. It supposedly worked, and I tried to access Vista again.

Now here's the problem that I'm currently having:
The keyboard works fine while the computer is booting up. In other words, I can access BIOS and all that. However, once the computer reaches the Vista logon screen, the keyboard and mouse don't receive any power from the computer at all. I can't turn on NumLock or anything like that. Therefore, I can't access my computer at all to try and repair it.

I tried a System Restore to right before it updated (or at least that's what I think the date stamp pointed to), but the problem persists.

I use a USB Keyboard and Mouse, and my computer does not have PS/2 keyboard or mouse ports. I'm running Windows Vista 64 bit, and my computer (and hardware inside) is maybe a year old at most, so I doubt any hardware has failed.

So basically I'm asking: Is there any way to fix my computer? Or will I have to get a Linux Live CD, back up... Read more

Recently Microsoft released a windows update called IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2) as an optional update. For some reason many desktop computers were detected and offered this nightmare of an update.

Issue: You select the optional IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2) update and install it and then your mouse seems completely non functional. The pointer stays in the center of the screen.

Resolution: If your computer has a recovery partition with System Restore in it than do a restore from there. If you do not than you will need to navigate to system restore with your keyboard and restore the pc to before the update was installed.

Weirdness: After you follow those steps everything works fine but it doesn't actually remove the update. The update never shows up in update history, but you will notice that in Device Manager the mouse is now listed as Other Human Interface Devices IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2). At this point in time I don't know how to correct that without reinstalling windows. However, M$ will probably release another update to fix it soon.

NOTE: If your system restore is disabled I have no solution for you.

I am unable to use the computer I'm writing about, so can't download system info. It's a HP Pavilion a1000n. It has XP home on it. The problem is that I have been given a computer to try and see what I can do with it. Here is what has happened so far. He said he had been gone and turned the computer off. When he turned it back on the mouse wouldn't work. He thought maybe it was the PS/2 port, so tried a cordless USB mouse. It worked briefly then quit also. My experience with it was the same with the PS/2, so I tried a cordless mouse and keyboard combo. I plugged it into the front USB port first. It showed the icon for downloading a driver, but did nothing. Then I tried all the ports on the back. Finally the last one gave the sound of plugging a new peripheral in and then it worked. I unplugged it and tried another USB mouse in that port and nothing. Now when I plug in the one of mine that worked it no longer works. When I had it working I went into device manager and it is showing all the mice and says they are working properly. Any suggestions at this point other than a new computer??

Answer:Solved: Keyboard and mouse won't work

Here is the support site for the HP Pavilion a1000n desktop - which is 8 years old.

Here is the section on troubleshooting a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Here is the section on troubleshooting a PS/2 or USB wired keyboard.

This is the first problem I've had which I've not been able to solve myself, either via google or sheer trial and error. It's by far the strangest thing I've come across.

As the title implies, after pressing any key, my left/right mouseclick won't work for a second or so. However, it's not exactly consistent across programs.

For example, I recently got guild wars 2. After typing, neither mouse click will work. I've also found that notepad/word share this.
On chrome/desktop/my media player, only the left click will stop functioning.
When playing league of legends, both keys will continue to function normally.

It's nothing hardware related and I have restarted.

And ermmm...yeah. Completely stuck. Thanks in advance to anybody who can help.

Edit: Nevermind. My brother installed touchfreeze onto my computer without telling me.

Answer:Mouse clicks don't work after using keyboard.

Glad it was sorted. If the computer is YOUR's and yours alone (not a family pc) i would see about getting your brother a limited user account

That's just me though, i might not be as nice about people changing settings on my computer.
