Programs aren't showing up on the installed programs list...

Question: Programs aren't showing up on the installed programs list...

I'm trying to download Microsoft Home & Student 2010 onto my HP Laptop. It gets halfway through the installation & then says that it can't finish because it found another version of Microsoft already on my computer. I checked my computer, but it doesn't have any Microsoft listed as being installed on my computer. How can I uninstall it, if it's not listed under the installed programs list?!?!

Preferred Solution: Programs aren't showing up on the installed programs list...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I installed a program but when it gives me the message that install is complete there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it. Then I don't find the program listed in Add/Remove programs list. How come and what is the problem? Is it that even though it says the program was installed, it actually wasn't?

Hi

I have been having an issue with my self built system, not sure if it is hard drive, virus or software conflict.

1- A month ago I started experiencing slow start up and afterwards there would be system hangs and the HDD light would be on for a while before system response.
2- Last week started having black screen on start up then I would get the Windows start up screen for a split second then login screen comes up.
3- From Saturday I would have problems loading web pages. The page would load fully but there would be no functionality i.e cant click on links, videos wont play(have to reload the page for it to work), clicking on Google prediction links the browser hangs or crashes.
4- Today I have been getting Windows Explorer crashes when I open recycle bin.
5- Biggest problem though is programs are not showing in Programs list in the Control panel but all programs start up normally but.
6- Of late games have been also stuttering. Battlefield 4 mantle also stopped working now using DirectX and GTA 4 not loading textures.

Any help will be appreciated

When I download a program & install it, sometimes it will show up in the Add/Remove Programs list, sometimes it won't. Why is that? And how do I remove a program that doesn't show up in the list? Thanks.

Answer:Why Don't All Installed Programs Show Up In Add/Remove Programs List?

Depends how the application was written and what installer the author used.

If it does not show up in Add/Remove programs, it should have an "uninstall" file in the program's directory which would achieve the same thing.

Hello,

We have a very irritating problem. One of our users has IE10 installed on her Windows 7 laptop. When she tries to download any installer program e.g. WinRAR, Firefox etc., she receives the dropdown bar in IE. She right-clicks the bar and selects download this file and saves it to her desktop. It looks like it downloads successfully, but when she looks at her desktop, the downloaded executable isn't there. This happens when she tries to save the file to other folders as well. We tried disabling her antivirus program to see if that resolves the problem and it doesn't.

Does anyone know how to resolve this crazy issue??

Thanks

Answer:Downloaded Internet Programs Aren't Showing Up Anywhere on Hard Drive

Normally the default download location is the User's Downloads folder and remain there until changed in Options of the Download Manager, available by clicking on the IE Gear icon to access Tools>View Downloads.

Otherwise to have a file downloaded to Desktop would require choosing Save As in the individual Download dialogue popup.

hey guys, like what i said above, my task manager is not working at all, i tried to right clicking the taskbar or press ctrl + alt + del... none of those worked.
this just happened 2 days ago. and yesterday i clicked on one of my mp3 files, it said

"to use window media player, log off windows, log back on, and then start window media player"

that's not it! when i tried to edit a picture file. i right clicked on the file and chosed edit (which will normally have Paint open up with the picture in it) but this time, it gave me that "Open With window and it asked me which program i wanted to open with"

this happened to alot of my other programs suck as Lexmark Scanner, Adobe Photoshop, MSN, and none of them works when i clicked it.

so i googled my program and most of the forums mentioned something abt HiJackThis. so i installed it and i got this:

*so what's the problem with my computer? please please help. thanks in advance.

I know its media center as if you go to properties of my computer it says media center, and it is from my buddy who has an MSDN sub, I watched him DL it for me from the MSDN site.
Its legit and updates and everything, its not a pirated copy or anything shady. I want to use media center for TV/video/music, but its just NOT THERE I have re-installed and everything.

SO... Any thoughts?

Is it because the PC doesnt have a TV card?
Is it the 512megs ram? (I will be upgrading, in a month or so)
Here are the specs on the machine just in case that matters (I dont think it does, does it?)

Sempron 3100+ (sock 754)
ECS mobo (crap but only 754 pci x mobo at the time)
2 sticks of 256 megs pc3200
PCI-X X800XL
Dell OEM sbi live (the SB0200 POS, Ill be replacing that as well)
Maxtor 250 IDE
Dell OEM DVD drive (not burner)
Netgear PCI 802.11G card (meh but works)

Answer:Installed Media center 05. Media center isnt showing up in programs list...

I've never seen it do that, but it has nothing to do with the hardware configuration. On a side note, this thread will probably be locked, because you are in fact using pirated software. You don't own a TechNet subscription, so you aren't authorized to use it. Your friend is also an idiot for giving out his TechNet software, as he could risk haven't his subscription cancelled.

I have another doozy. The Add or Remove Programs menu is not showing the entire list of installed applications. The list ends alphabetically at "M".

I just turned on an WinXP system that hasn't been used for months. I have tried several things to fix the problem:

Installed all WinXP updates from Microsoft's Windows updater.

Hijackthis doesn't show anything unusual (See list below). Norton Antivirus 2004 shows a few alerts (see below), but NAV cannot remove them. Housecall antivirus scanner does not show the same alerts. Spybot S&D doesn't show anything related (nor does it show the "Spyware threat"s that NAV shows.

I tried the suggestions from Symantec to remove Dlder here, but nothing related to the Dlder alerts were found. I also disabled System Restore. How do I remove what NAV has found?

However, all applications do show in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. I even tried exporting the Uninstall key, and clicking on it to reinstall all of the entries.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome mnoman to the windows 7 forums.

There is a distinct possibility that your install went astray due to a corrupted mse.
Can we assume that you downloaded from the microsoft security site?
If you can do a restore back to an earlier time prior to trying to install mse.

This might be your best bet as it looks like your registry might have gotten munged up.
Also, do you have another AV or Internet Security product installed?

If so, then that could be the culprit.

Here's what happened:

I wanted to burn a disc using Windows Media Player using my laptop computer. For some reason, the burn button was not showing up. I couldn't click on it. I checked the file properties of the music files I was burning and they were MP3s, which I have never had a problem burning before with this type of file. So I decided to restart the computer. Once the computer finished the restart process, I clicked back into my start program, only to find out all my files are gone! I went into the Control Panel to check if they were completely gone, but the program list is showing all my files. I was able to access WMP by clicking on the exe file in my program files through Computer and was able to burn the disc. After that, I shut down the computer, waited five minutes, and started the computer up again. My start program is still not listing the files.

I notice twice that when the computer loaded my desktop, I got a corrupted file notice. It was an exe file, with the letters in some form of MSCAC. It comes and goes really quick so I can barely grab it. I tried to do a search for the file, but the window keeps crashing.

I also notice that I do not have certain Administrative properties anymore, like checking my Performance Logs. I had to click edit on the dialog pop-up boxes so I could gain access, but I am the sole Administrator on my laptop.

Could someone figured out what the heck happened?

By accident, I found out that OpenAL (no other details given) is on the list of installed programs on my Win7 64bit machine. Seems to be related to Creative Labs(?). My machine has VIA audio and I have not knowingly installed this thing.

Any ideas what this is, what it does and where it may have come from?

Thanks,

Is there any way I can print out a list of installed programs in Win 7? There are 82 of them. I know I can use Gadwin Print Screen on a Control Panel Programs and Features window but the the print out is too small for these tired old eyes.

I want to do this because I am about to get a new computer and plan to use the Windows Easy Transfer, or what ever it is called, to transfer this computer to the new one. It would be easier to install the programs first and then transfer all of their settings.

Thank you very much.

Hi again,

i just found out that the "List of installed programs" (control Panel --> Software) has somehow "shortened", there are now 15 entries, but only some days ago there where a lot more.

e.g. all the Windows-update "hotfixes" were shown separately in the list, now no such entry is to be found ?? is there any way to "reinitialize" the list or something?

or do they just have become invisible ? only like 3 or 4 of the other programs are missing ..

Ideally I'd want to be able to schedule to copy this list to my backup drive whenever I log on.

Hello,

when I check out my installed programs in Vista the list is messed up.
Allot of programs don't appear, the icons are strange and allot of them can't be uninstalled. There is no option for it!
Is it possible that using jv16 Powertools 2009 caused this problem?
And most important, is there a way to fix it?

Restore or reinstall of Vista.

For future reference, add an "Ignore Words" entry into jv16 PowerTools 2009 for
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache

Although, Vista may rebuild it if it is deleted ... if you are lucky ...

I'm confronted with the problem of uninstallers that don't work.  In the immediate case it is specifically XP.  I know enough about Windows to do some of the tasks associated with uninstalling a program as follows:
- know how to edit the registry
- delete software libraries from with Program Files directory
- delete desktop icons
- delete entries in start menu
- find and remove files from within Documents & Settings directory
I assume that the entries listed for Add and Remove Programs are stored in some registry key.  How do I locate those registry keys?  Is there any way to tell if a program installation added files to system folders (e.g., presumably based on registry
entries) other than those in their sub-directory of Program Files (e.g., windows\system32)?

Hi guys, first time poster here. I'm an intermediate user, been running Windows since 3.0, and am fairly comfortable poking around with anything under the hood. I've just bought my first Win7 computer, and it has me scratching my head on a few issues. I've done a search of the forums, but had no luck with one specific issue.

I'm running Home Premium, and I have My Admin account and 2 separate user accounts. I install all programs using the Admin account. Some programs, such as Office 2010 and Adobe Reader, installed easily with the programs listed under each user's "All Programs" area on the start menu. Other programs installed and showed up under Admin's "All Programs", but will not show up in the other users' "All Programs". None of these programs asked if I wanted to install for just the active user account or for all accounts, they just installed.

I can still run these programs by doing a search and executing, so I have access to them. I know I can create shortcuts or pin them to the taskbar, but I really don't like the clutter. How can get these programs to show up under "All Programs" for all users?

Thanks in advance for any help, I've already learned tons from this site!

Thomas

Answer:Installed progrqams not showing under All Programs

We are talking about shortcuts here not programs. An app installer may choose to add a shortcut to the start menu, or not, depends entirely on the author of the app.

You can customize the start menu the way you want. Browse through C:\Program Files to find the program .exe, right-click it, select Copy, browse to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, right-click any blank area in the window, and select Paste Shortcut. That will give you the Start Menu (All Programs) shortcut. Remember, Programdata is a hidden folder so you need to unhide hidden files and folders for it to show up.

I have kind of an odd thing going on here....

I run Vista 64 Ultimate and I have 2 74 gig raptor drives, C:\ and D:\

My OS is installed under C:\, However all my games are installed on my D:\ drive. I didnt really notice this till recently because I only have installed WoW and Crysis (well WoW doesnt count because you dont have to reinstall it when you reformat, just make a copy of the directory) but any game I install on my D:\ drive does not build the start menu extentions. So whenever I want to play Crysis i have to go into my D:\ drive and actually launch the .exe file. However anything that I install on my C:\ builds the extentions just fine.

Anyone else experience this?

Hello

I've had issues with getting a game to work (GTA IV), and, after some research i've found out that probably reinstalling my microsoft.net framework would fix this problem.

Unfortunately, when I enter the windows uninstalling utility (the one in which all programs are listed) there is no framework version on the list!

I believe they were installed along with OS (which is in my case Windows 7).. In fact i'm sure they're installed, since i manually navigated to the folder containing them and noticed all versions from 1.0 to 3.5.

My question is if there exists a way to fully uninstall those packages, so that I will be able to install them again?

Thanks in advance, whitesheep

Hey all. Trying to get a login script hammered out this morning for my boss. Basically we want a script so that each machine will spit out a self named .csv file to a network drive.

So far after searching the intertubes here is what I have

Code:
@echo off > installed-programs.csv
regedit /e regexport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall"
find "DisplayName" < regexport.txt > regprogs.txt
for /f "tokens=2 delims==" %%a in (regprogs.txt) do (echo %%~a >>installedprogs.txt )
for /f "tokens=*" %%L in (installedprogs.txt) do (call :sub1 %%L )
del regexport.txt
del regprogs.txt
del installedprogs.txt
goto :eof
:sub1
>> installed-programs.csv echo %1,%2,%3,%4,%5,%6,%7,%8,%9
Unfortunately on my win 7 machine this runs, but with the errors that it can't find the path to the files (regexport.txt for instance). Need some help from someone who is much better at batch then I am to get this figured out.

what about putting in a full path or using the %temp% variable to store the files until you delete them?

Hey guys, Aura here.

So I don't know if that thread already exists but if it does, feel free to close this one and link me the current one please.

I thought it would be a good idea if we could see everyone's installed softwares and programs, like what we use and for what, just so we can discover new programs that we might want to use and get to know each other based on the programs we use. How does it sound ?

In order to do this, we'll download and use MiniToolBox to output a list of the programs installed on our system. If you post this list directly in this thread, please use the spoiler tags as the output list is quite lenghty. Otherwise, you can copy/paste the content of the output log on Pastebin.com and post the link here.

Here's the walkthrough :
Download MiniToolBox;
Execute it;
Check the "List Installed Programs" checkbox;
Click on "Go";
Copy/paste the content of the output log on PasteBin and post the link in this thread or post the output directly in this thread using the spoiler tags please;

I'll get started to break the ice :

Aura's installed programs list, on Pastebin

Now it's your turn guys, let's get some lists going !

Thanks for your list of installed software, including version numbers @Aura now I can target you with hacks designed specifically to exploit the software that's on your computer

So my pc was running perfectly fine until i went to winrar.com and downloaded what i thought to be Winrar. I did the express download without thinking and discovered after the fact that the file that I thought was Winrar was just a defunct trojan/scareware program. It downloaded either 5 or 6 other peripheral programs to my pc, including a popup generator that forced a popup in one way or another every time a new web page was visited, or anything on the page clicked the first time. I recently added Mp3MyMp3.exe to Vista Home Premium and it did not work. I would like to take it off the drive but it's not showing in add/remove programs and there is no uninstall utility that came with the program.

P.S. It said after installation was not successful after I ran the program and closed it for the first time.

Please help.

Answer:Installed Program not showing in Add/Remove Programs

An uninstaller was not included because mp3mymp3.exe is actually a standalone program that technically does not need to be installed to run.

If you wish to remove the program simply delete the mp3mymp3 folder and it's contents.

Hello all

I'm having trouble finding installed programs in my hard drive after installation.

For multiple programs, once I've installed them there isn't any folders/files visible anywhere in the directory they were supposedly installed (C:\Program Files (x86)\[File Name]), or anywhere else on the computer. No start menu/shortcuts are created either.

I've tried unhiding all files, reinstalling to different areas (C:\Users) etc. but nothing is appearing. I've run all installations with administrator privilege.

Strangely enough, the hard drive does not show a decrease in file space after the installations, but if I try and reinstall the programs I get an error message telling me they are already installed and asking me if I want to overwrite.

I thought it may just be windows explorer, but trying third party explorer software still couldn't find anything.

Some of the installed programs will still run, if I have the executable name to run it from the cmd window, so they must be there. I'm not sure if this is a problem with windows or my hard drive is just knackered.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Newly installed programs not showing in hard drive

Do they show up in "Programs and Features" as installed? If so, what happens if you try to uninstall?

Any chance they are 64-bit programs so they installed in "C:\Program Files"?

I do not know whether it should be like that or not but I find that Control panel >Programs and Features do not list all sizes for my installed apps. For example Office 2007 and many others have no size listed. Is that normal?

Answer:Control Panel not showing sizes 0f installed programs

Hello Patmos,

Yep, it's normal. If the uninstaller file from that program did not include this information, then it will not be displayed. It was the same in Vista as well. Have to blame the program publisher for this one.

Hello,

I had installed Yahoo messenger a few days ago. I had went into Control Panel shortly after the installation and uninstalled Yahoo Toolbar, which I didn't want. I then decided that I didn't want messenger installed either so went back into Control Panel only to find that it was not listed there. I also noticed that most programs normally found listed in there, such as MSN messenger, NHL07 & Spysweeper just to name a few, are also no longer in Control Panel yet each program works just fine. There are only very few items still remaining in there. And again this happened immediately after uninstalling Yahoo Toolbar. My question is how did this happen, and how can i get Control Panel to list these installed programs again?

Thank you,
Kevin

I upgraded to Windows 8 last night, and encountered a lot of problems. My dual screen was not working, all drivers had been lost. However after upgrading to Windows 8.1, thankfully some have been fixed. However my biggest problem is that I have lost all my programs even though I installed it on a different partition of my hard drive.
So when I was upgrading to Windows 8 from Windows 7, I did a custom install. I formatted my C:Drive since there wasn't enough memory. I thought I would have kept all my programs since it was installed on another partition, but after the setup was complete all my programs were gone, though they still showed up on the D:Drive. Luckily I copied all of my C:Drive to an external drive (Copy and Paste) and so I thought of just copying it back to the new C:Drive, but that didn't work.
How do I get all my programs back? It's still on my D:Drive, but it isn't showing at all so in order for me to launch it, I have to manually go to Program Files (x86) or Program Files and fine the desired program which is a bit of a hassle.
Help?

Answer:Problem with lost programs - Not showing even though I installed it on another partition

Not entirely sure what you've done.
It rather sounds like you had Windows 7 installed on C, with the programs on D and you then did a clean install of Win8 on C.
That being the case, then you won't be able to use the programs installed previously (under Win7) on D. Some may work (after a fashion), but you cannot rely on it at all.
When you install programs all sorts of information relating to the programs is effectively stored with the OS. Having done a clean install of Win8 will mean that your OS does not know of the programs on D.
If you can restore your original Win7 set-up, I'd recommend doing an UPGRADE to Win8, not a clean install. Alternatively re-install all of the programs again (if you have the installers etc.).

So I do a little digging and come to find out that it is the folder that houses some of the links to programs. The file is located at C:\Users\Kyle\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. How do I get it off? I suppose it really isn't a big deal. I just like things a certain way. Thanks.

Is there any way to bring back programs that have disappeared from the programs list in the control panel?

One day I realized most of my programs had disappeared from the list (roughly 10 or so remaining from the usual 50-60). This occurred after I had downloaded something. I ran Norton, Advanced System Care, Malwarebytes & CCleaner. As I recall one of them mentioned a virus in the registry. After checking google I looked under the following registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall, and true enough the same programs that had disappeared did not appear here.

When it happened (a few months ago) I tried system restores as far back as possible to no avail. I've now realized its a hassle trying to uninstall programs not on the list (programs don't appear on Revo uninstaller or such programs either), so is there a way I can fix this (without any reinstalling of windows)

Im not 100% sure the virus caused this, but im guessing this is what happened. Any help would be appreciated! Also Im not so computer-savvy and first post on these (or any) forums

Cheers

Answer:Programs Missing From Control Panel Programs List

Welcome to the Seven Forums, shak.

You mean that the installed programs are not appearing in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features. Try to reinstall one of the missing programs without uninstalling it and tell us if it reappears in the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features list.

I strongly recommend that you also run sfc in the elevated mode. Read at SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker.

So yesterday I noticed that programs are missing from my control panels program list. Right now there is only 19 items and I use to have probably over 60. Notable missing are all my AVS4You and Topaz Labs software. Also anything with the name Windows is not listed. I can't think of anything I installed to cause this. All I saw was some Windows updates. I've searched other threads and ran some of recommended programs. I then downloaded and ran Malwarebytes software and it found 55 problems, deleted those but my problem still exists. I also did a system restore back to 3/21. I'm at a loss now. Any ideas? Also I'm using MS Security Essentials for protection.

I recently installed free version of GIMP Photo Program to try it and I actually haven't done more than open it once. I mention this because it's the only recent change I've made as far as photo programs go.

I went to open one of my screenshots and it opened with GIMP, which I don't want. I went to Start/Default Programs so I could set the default to one of my other options. Those options would be IrfanView, Photoshop, Windows Photo Gallry, Fastone Image Viewer, Paint or Paint.NET or this GIMP.

The only options which show up under Start/Default Programs/Det Default Programs are IrfanView and Windows Photo Gallery. Why don't the other photo programs to appear there?

Hi.Can anyone tell me how I can remove a program from the list when you click Start / All Programs list on one user account but not on any other? If I remove a program it seems to remove it from all accounts on the computer. There are three accounts on my PC running Windows XP Home. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Remove programs from Start/All Programs list

You can copy the program you want to have under a particular account to the Start Menu folder for those accounts and delete it from the Start Menu folder of All Users.Click on My Computer and look in C:\Documents and Settings\ and you will see a number of folders. One will be called All Users and there will be three others for the accounts you have set up. Open folder \All Users\Start Menu\ and look for the program you want to move. It may be in folder Programs or even in a named folder in here. Cut the program and copy into the appropriate \Start Menu\ folder for your account.Hope that helps.

Windows 7 64bit.
When I install a new program on my PC it's folder appears in the 'All Programs' list but it is empty. It should, obviously, contain shortcuts to the application files etc.
If I try to delete that empty folder it won't let me as I 'don't have the authority' and it's properties show that it is 'Unable to display current owner'.
I have run a variety of malware and av checks and all is clear.
This has happened with all recent installations over the last few months including Silverlight installed as a Windows Update. I hadn't actually tied it down to installation until now and, as it happens, one uninstallation where a program was uninstalled but it's entry remained in 'All Programs' and couldn't be removed.
Any ideas?

My computer has been having various issues...as of late I've been running spyware software, had my registry repaired, have Windows Defense running...things have improved, but I still have an issue with programs opening. I supposedly am clean of spyware, adware, viruses, etc at this point...With certain programs on my desktop, when I double-click the icons to open them, nothing occurs. Even if I select certain programs from the Start->All Programs, the programs do not open. I have not found a common reason why certain programs open and certain don't. Some of my programs I wish to access from my desktop are shortcuts, and some of them are the executable file itself, and still will not open. In addition, when I do Ctrl+Alt+Del, my task manager won't open.  Now here's the strange part...However since I have Windows Defense, I can see my current programs running. And a program that I tried accessing, that did NOT open for my use, IS shown to be currently processing. Some examples include Yahoo not opening, Creative Mediasource not opening, one of my Spyware programs not opening, etc.... Any ideas as to what could be going on?

Hi,

Is there a way to shorten the all programs list without uninstalling/deleting the programs?

Currently my list is super long, so I have to have it on scroll, and I don't care for scroll because it takes forever. But having it on expand makes it impossible to see the last column.

I'd rather not uninstall the programs if I don't have to, so I figured I'd ask.

Thanks!
Erin

Answer:Shorten the All Programs List (w/o uninstalling programs)?

You can organize all your programs by arranging them into folders in your Programs Menu.

In Windows Explorer, go here,
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
and
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Start Menu\Programs

Create some folders in their and drag your programs into those folders.

Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If it finds any problems, it will prompt you for the Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.

My anti-virus avast picked up a false positive today from full system scan, from a game I play (More specifically Monster Hunter Online CH and my computer is free of viruses). So then I realized I don't really play that game anymore. So I went ahead and uninstalled it from my list today, then I deleted the false positive. Including the folder that the game left behind in my external drive. To my surprise, after doing so, when I wanted to uninstall other games I wanted, A HUGE TON of my programs literally disappear! Only 28 programs list! So maybe I thought it was a bug, and went to CCleaner. To my surprise, even then SOME programs are missing there as well! More programs pop up in CCleaner, but still missing! I tried restarting, turning off, reconnecting my drive, and still no alas, everything is missing... So then I decided to do the regular fixes with Regedit, looking for my missing programs through the uninstall thingy path recommended by Microsoft. AND my surprise again, EVERYTHING is missing except Microsoft updates and graphic drivers! and no file is listed with more than 63 characters! Can anyone help out?

Edit: Also decided to run SFC scan, and it found no violations.

Do you have other users who are set to admin the system? Did you perform a system restore lately? Do all your drives show in "Computer"?

What you are speaking of seems like someone else is making changes you are not aware of. User created desktop icons would not be removed if a program was uninstalled or removed by a system restore. They would not link up to their .exe files though. Same if the drive is not listed.

Right click any icon in question and select properties. It will tell you the path that the icon is leading you too. Then, check that path. Make sure that the file it is supposed to execute is actually there.

If it is, you ran into a bug I have not sene since the early days of XP. Google '.ico not working' for a reg fix.

I can find them in "Computer C:" but have they updated something or was I just imagining them being in the Start list.

Just found this aout fter uninstalling MBAM and trying to reinstall it and it's telling me I still have it in x86 progs - and you know the rest.

Any help please!

I know this is probably easy for you guys, but I can't figure it out. Right now I have two columns of programs on the All Programs list, and both are filled. But each time I d/l and install something new, it puts it on the second list, but way far down so I can't see the whole thing. Like, I can see the top part of the icon, no words, and move over it and see what is in that folder, but can't see the whole folder!!!

I have WinXP Home SP2 if that helps

(do I need to post a screenshot or...)

Answer:[resolved] "All Programs" list not showing all

everytime you add something new to the list, it will add it to the end. What you need to do is remove some unused, or unneeded items from the list, or organize some items into folders, so that your programs list is not so large.

I've got a problem that is showing up in 2 ways.

1. I'll install software such as Windows Virtual PC and the folder will show up in the programs menu, but the folder will be empty. How does the software get installed but the program icon not added to the software folder? Screenshot is help2.jpg. Notice the Windows Virtual PC folder is empty.

2. I'll install software such as the Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express and an icon to start the program is in the folder, but nothing happens when it's clicked. Screenshot is help1.jpg.

What is going on? What do I do to get software installed with icons in the folders? I go into windows explorer and cannot find the programs.

Answer:Installed programs won't show in programs menu

Hi kokopoko,

at least in the case of Virtual PC I can tell you with some certainty that a reboot will complete the installation and populate the empty folder with shortcuts.

You might notice the little yellow shield in your "Shut down" button. That's Windows' way of telling you that an installation isn't yet complete and requires a restart.

As for Visual Studio, I'm not sure but I notice you have VS 2008 installed. The 2010 Express version might conflict with it, but I don't really know as I'm not familiar with Visual Studio.

But first things first: reboot.

Some (3, out of maybe 20) of my installed Programs, all working perfectly well, are not listed in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Thank you.

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

Hi everyone.  When trying to figure out how to maximize protection on my computer, I found a post on ComputerHope (see the link and post below) in one of the introductory pages about security (posted by an expert or similar title).  I?m relatively new at this and do not mean to second-guess, but I have read dozens of times in the help sections of antivirus programs and other places that you should definitely not have more than one antivirus program installed on your computer at any given time.  The reason, they say, is that the programs will interfere with one another, decreasing their functionality. I do realize that antivirus programs are different than antispyware programs (as the post below is specific to antispyware). That said, and, again, I may be mistaken, but I have also thought (from reading instructions on antispyware programs, forums such as these, tech support folks, etc.) that the same is true for antispyware programs (and firewalls for that matter)?that you should never have more than one present on your computer at the same time--even if disabled--for the same reason as with antivirus software.  (By the way, I am also aware that you do need an antivirus program and an antispyware program and a firewall installed and operable at the same time; I?m talking about >1 of each particular type).  I would love to have 2 or more antivirus (like AVG and Avast) as well as 2 antispyware (AdAware and Spybot) programs on my computer for extra sec... Read more

Answer:Is it ok to have 2+ antivirus programs and/or 2+ antispyware programs installed?

I believe you have misunderstood that quote just a little.  In that section of the page, he is referring to anti-spyware programs only.  It's okay to have a couple of anti-spyware programs...but like you assumed, you should only have one anti-virus.  If you would like to have an additional anti-virus, however, you should look up ClamWin.  It's a great program, but it doesn't have live protection (you have to specifically instruct it to scan), so it won't get in the way of your primary scanner.  You should, of course, never scan with any two programs at the same time.

Is anyone else having this issue? When I go to view installed programs in the Control Panel in Windows 7 Ultimate (RTM), the "Last Used On" column is blank for all programs.

Answer:Win7: Installed Programs list - "Last Used On" field is empty

Yes, it's empty. You can right click on Name or Publisher (or any detail category for that matter) and add/remove details, just like you do for normal folders.

Hi Andy,

what I did when this happened to me (normally after installing some older utility that was designed for windows 95 or the like ) was...

Right click on start menu - properties and customise (the menu) and immediately OK out of the dialogue. sometimes this would cre the issue straight away sometime a reboot was required
Hope it works for you

my mom tells me she was uninstalling yahoo and she followedw the prompt to restart the computer. She then went back to install it again (she thinks when the website is having problems she needs to uninstall and install it again....)and it wouldn't work because the site is having difficulties. So she goes back to the program list and all it has is
Adobe Album Photoshop 2.0 Starter Edition
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
Freetar
Google Toolbar for IE
HpSdpAppCoreApp
iTunes
Java SE Runtime Enviroment SE v1.4.2_03
Java SE Runtime Enviroment 6 Update 1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition
Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package 1.1
Microsoft Works 7.0
Quicktime
WebFldrs XP

I have no idea what could have caused it besides the yahoo stuff but I don't see why that would delete most of the programs from the list... help is appreciated!

Hi

I downloaded Adobe Shockwave Player which is needed to view a file (.swf), and it appears in the control panel as an installed program. However, it does not appear as a default program when I am trying to use the "associate a file type or protocal with a specific program" even when I press the browse list. The program also does not appear when I "right click" the file itself and use the open command. The program also does not appear in the list of programs on the "All Progams: list when clicking the windows icon. So, can someone tell me how to get programs onto the default list....(Please, I have seen a number of threads that talk about how to "set" the default program which I am well aware of...I need to know how to get a program to be recognized and incoroporated as part of the list).
I have windows 7 64 bit .

Thanks for any help.
Linda

Answer:Add Programs to Default Programs List

Hello there, Linda.

I believe that you need to install "Adobe Shockwave Player" for viewing .swf content, not the Flash Player

I have a new notebook with xp home. I've noticed that there are some programs that came with the system that do not show up under Start/All Programs. Example is Microsoft's Picture It! 7.0 which I can run by finding it under My Computer, but I can't see it anywhere under Start/All Programs. I'm sure there are others as well. Can someone explain this? TIA.

Answer:Start/All Programs not showing all programs

Is it possible that just out of view at the bottom of the screen is a double arrow on which you can click to extend the list and show more menu items? If not I'm out of ideas except to say customise the Start Menu by increasing the number of recently used programmes shown in the list directly above the Start button. This you do by right clicking a vacant area of the Taskbar and look at Properties.

Hello. I am running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. After removing PC Optimizer Pro and other stuff that re-directed my IE web browsing programs and features shows only five programs. I have well over 20 programs.
sfc /scannow did see any problems.
In REGEDIT under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall I just see these five programs.

What can I do so I view all of my programs?

Thank you for looking.

Answer:programs and features not showing all programs

Having lost the uninstallers, other than reinstalling the programs, I don't see how you'll get back those registry entries.

Hi, I hope someone can help. i went to uninstall a program via programs and features and noticed that the list and icons only showed 8 programs installed ,i'm certain there is normally around 70-80.

Everything appears to function as before so i assume the programmes are there hidden somewhere and not uninstalled.

Has anyone come across this before?. i'm running windows 8.1 32 Bit.

Regards Dom

Answer:Programs and features ,Only 8 programs installed

Just for grins I would suggest getting MyUninstaller freeware. See if it shows the same.

I am running XP Pro with SP3, when I click the All Programs tab an entire page of installed programs appears, it does not however display all programs that are installed on the machine. I am not sure if this is a display issue (no more room on the page to display additional installed programs) or something else. I have tried without success to "expand" the page in question, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Answer:All Programs does not display all installed programs

Greetings, toptechx6.

Not all programs create a Start Menu folder and/or icons when installed. Many programs even give you the option of not creating a Startup group in their installation setup pages - CCleaner and IrfanView come to mind.

Ill start with hardware specs. Im using a HP Pavilion dv2530ea, running Windows 7 Ultimate, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, T5250 @ 1.50GHz (Typing this off System Info, I havent really learnt anything about hardware, but I'm assuming this is all you need to know?).

Right, I have a 106gb hard drive, a few days ago I decided to install WoW after 2 years of not playing it, last time I played it required about 6gb to install, and I had about 8gb left so I thought I'd just install and it'd be fine, but no. As I began to install, I had a message saying I needed at least 10gb free, so I decided to wipe about 40gb of music and 5gb of software (since I was freeing up space I thought I'd delete things I didn't need!), and since doing so my laptop has turned on me.

The only changes made to my laptop have been the deletion of music and some un-needed software, and the installation of WoW, surely this wouldn't mess my laptop up?

So, after rebooting following the installation of WoW, I noticed that my CPU and weather 'gadget' had kind of disappeared, the icon to move them was still there, but the interface wasn't (I believe it's called an interface? haha). The CPU gadget was just like a small white box, and the weather one was just not there.

But this is the least of my problems. Since then (by the way, the WoW installation was 2 nights ago - Christmas night), well as of today, my Windows Media Player 12 refuses to work, the mouse cursor shows signs of loading for about a second, but th... Read more

Ok, recently I've been trying to change WinXP theme into diff theme with StyleXP. When I changed my theme, I wanted to go in to Adobe Photoshop CS. And it said that my computers configuration was changed I need to reactivate my serial code or something. Then I go in 3DS MAX Studio, I notice that it also needs serial reactivation. I was really frustrated and I did a System restore to the day before. It kept showing the same msg.
Is there anyway I can get these programs back without unistall/reinstalling them? And if this happens, does this mean that my registry is screwed up? Do I need to reformat?

Thanks for the support!

Answer:Uh oh, my programs aren't working..

Once you start chasing your tail around trying to get the files straightened out you realize that it would have been much easier and less time consuming to just reformat and start all over again. At least that's my feeling on the subject. Of course it'll take hours to download the updates but at least you'll know that the system is off to a clean start.

I don't know what my dad did but he's having problems with his laptop. When you go to open pretty much any program you either get an error that says "programname.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program." or a message that says, "this application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on ok to terminate the application."

No spyware programs can load properly so I can't try to clean anything. Also, internet explorer will not connect to any websites, but netscape seems to be working fine.
