Preferred Solution: Computer stuck on blank screen!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Computer stuck on blank screen!

I have 2 computers both doing the same thing... Here's the story:One is XP Home SP3 and the other is XP Pro SP3... both were infected via an infected USB drive with what started as Virut... I was able to log into them fine in the beginning, but they were infected... Also, system restore wasn't turned on with either system so that isn't an option... I ran Malwarebytes, it found 235 infected files on one and only about 110 on the other, I told it to remove the infected files on both of them, Malwarebytes requested a reboot and after the reboot it came up to a BSOD 0x0000007e error screen on both machines (in safe mode and normal boot)... I then concentrated on the Pro machine... I booted to the recovery console, ran a chkdsk /r, no change... Then tried fixboot and fixmbr and chkdsk /r, same thing... I ran a scan using Avira's boot rescue disk and it clean a few more infected files, but still it came up to the 7e BSOD... I tried a repair install of the OS, rebooted and it came up with "windows must be activated before logging on" box, if I hit the button to activate, it would go to a screen showing the background and cursor and nothing else and just hang there and if I cancel it goes back to let me pick a user... From here I could get into the basic Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with networking... Then from safe mode I renamed wpa.dbl and wpa.bak to wpa_old.dbl and wpa_old.bak and rebooted...this changed the popup box to say "A problem is preventing... Read more

I was using the laptop, then it went to suspend mode due normal timeout. When it came back, the fan start to spin full throttle but it was functionating  beside that, normally. I restarted but then it never boot again. This is the process where it gets stuckedBoot to Splash Screen, Beep, then a black screen and the fan start to spin at full speed.(In the post in diagnostic mode, shows no error, pass the memory check, shows the info of the processor )  I tried this: Retired Hard Disk,Press 60 Seconds  (Reset BIOS) - without battery and power cord Press 10 times the power button an then 30 seconds -- without battery and power cord  Visually there is no damage in the usb ports, maybe i  will need  to disassembly to get a better view to check if there is a short somewhere.  With this symptoms , what should else i try.  Could be a memory issue? Thanks for any help you can provide me.

Answer:L512 Wont Boot , Splash Screen then stuck blank screen and Fan in full throttle

I have tested  with another Dimm, with the same result. So that  let me discard  a module issue.

When device manager opens, look at your graphics card normally under "display adapters" - any crosses or red splats?

I've got a windows vista desktop that I have not used in awhile. I hooked it all up today and when I turn it on it sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner. Can someone help me get this computer going again? Oh, I should mention I'm not very tech savy, but I can follow directions good.

Answer:Stuck on blank screen during start up.

Let's have a look at the MBR (Master Boot Record) and see where we go from there.

Step 1: On a working computer, please download the latest version of PartedMagic:PartedMagic Downloads (download the .iso file under the heading "Most people will only need this file:")
Write ( in the appropriate manner) the downloaded .iso file to either CD or USB/flashdrive:Creating the LiveCD with InfraRecorder
Creating the LiveUSB
Boot the problematic computer from the PartedMagic CD or flashdrive:At the first menu with Default settings (Runs from RAM) selected, press <ENTER>.
Be patient while PartedMagic loads into memory, and then displays its Desktop.
Success? Let me know if you can successfully boot to the Desktop of PartedMagic, and whether you are using a bootable CD or a flashdrive.

PartedMagic Desktop version 2012-08-09

Step 2: At the PartedMagic Desktop, open a terminal window:Locate the black screen/monitor icon (ROXTerm) along the bar at the bottom of the Desktop screen (third icon from the left-side edge).
Click on the ROXTerm icon to open a terminal window and at the prompt, type:

fdisk -l

Note: There is a space between "fdisk" and "-l".
That is a lower case L as in Llama and not a ONE.
... and press <ENTER>.
Drag your mouse over the output to select it all.
Right-click somewhere in the area selected > C... Read more

Last night there was a power outage at my house. My computer and monitor are both plugged in directly at the wall with no power strip, and my computer was idling as I went to go do something. Now, when I try to boot it up it gets stuck right after the system checks at a screen with one flashing dash/underscore. It reminds me of a computer I had a couple years ago that did this and it was the power source, and I admit I have a crappy Xion one. What could this possibly be?

Specs:
ASUS-M3A78-T Motherboard
4G RAM
NVidia 8600-GT Series Graphics Card
ASUS Quad Core processor Phenom-Black Edition.
and a crappy came-with-the-case power source.

I Was having trouble with my laptop which i bought a few months ago. i was having high cpu/memory/disk usage i tried many solutions and none worked.
So i decides to reset my pc and it completed the first few steps but then i had a problem with windows installation part it was stuck at 66% percent. It would jump to 86% or 99% then reboot and go to 66% again or jump down to 64% or back to 66% but it would keep rebooting and it was doing this for 12 hours so i decided to try to open command prompt.
I typed this in & hit enter "bcdedit /set {default} safeboot network" i did that while my computer was still stuck at the windows install screen and it rebooted while i was still in command prompt now my pc is stuck in a reboot turn onn and off state. It turns onn and shows acer loading then screen goes blank, and it then goes back to acer loading screen and repeats the process and it keeps doing this while my computer is on. When i turn my computer off it stops but once it backs on it keeps doing this.
Any help?

Hello,

I have Vista on my PC, and up until the other day all worked fine. I turned off the computer properly, then the next day when I wanted to turn the pc on, it just wouldn't do it. It recognizes the BIOS and the Safe Boots options, but then no matter what I do, it goes into a blank screen. Not even the cursor is to be seen. I tried :
1. Rebooting it in Safe Mode, I couldn't, it goes into same blank screen.
2. I tried rebooting from the Last Successful Boot (the advance option), it again went into same blank screen.
3. I tried rebooting from the CD I have, it recognizes my option, then little vertical bars show up at the bottom of the screen from left to right showing as if something is being read or uploaded or so, but then when the bars reach all the way accross the screen (horizontaly), the same blank screen comes up and again it goes into a freeze mode (with no cursor).

I have no idea hod this could have possibly happen, but however, I'm stuck with it.
Please, I need help.
Thanks,

I've swapped out the optical drive and replaced it with SATA HDD using a 12.7mm caddy. Both the BIOS & Windows is able to detect and use the drive. But now I can't seem to shutdown/sleep....when I shutdown...windows seems to power off but the red LED remains on. I have to long press the power button to force shutdown.Anyone encountering the same problem and can share any suggestions for a fix?Let me know if further details are needed.FYI, my E430 has a mSATA SSD (for OS), stock 500gb 7200rpm HDD and another 500gb 7200rpm HDD in the optical drive

Answer:E430 - cannot shutdown stuck blank screen

I have the very same problem but on Lenovo E440. The problem started occurring just after I got my caddy. Initially my primary drive was 120 GB Kingston SSD and everything worked as expected. Once I received my caddy from a China vendor (no manufacturer or label whatsoever) I installed the caddy and the BIOS, Windows install, and Linux (3 different distros) identified the stock 500GB HDD (in the caddy) without any problem. However, each and every OS has troubles shutting down the machine. I am quite sure its not a software issue as even the BIOS sometimes gets stuck when I am try to "Save and exit". I troubleshooted the issue very carefully, replacing absolutely each component (RAM, CPU, HDD, SSD, even WiFi) and the problem only occurs if the caddy is inserted - regardless what kind of drive is installed in it. I tried using the caddy with 2 different HDDs (one at a time of course) while the SSD was on the main SATA slot, I also tried setting the SSD in the caddy, and booting only with 2 HDDs (1 in the caddy and one on the main SATA slot) and every time the caddy is involved the OS just can't properly turn off the machine.I am quite tech savy and this issue is just eating me alive as I cannot think of a possible solution to apply. If there is anyone with any ideas on the matter, please share some advise as this is just killing me

Yesterday I return to my dwelling and found the Vista desktop at a blank screen with a cursor. It was in a Windows environment. I CTRL-ALT-DELed to get Task Manager and the only thing "running" (well, "not responding") was "personalized settings." It boots okay in Safe Mode. I ran "chkdsk /f/r" twice on the drive. Still boots into Windows but stops at a blank screen with a cursor, and I can still bring up Task Manager and see those settings still not responding. Maybe one of the crashes it constantly gets destroyed the user profile? But it booted into Safe Mode showing all Desktop icons with no issue. In Safe Mode I created another admin account and tried to boot into that, but same result. Just hangs at a blank screen and if I CAD into Task Manager, the personalized settings will not be responding, and killing it not help. I really can only CAD to restart computer into Safe Mode is my only option.Last Known Config not helped either.Thoughts?Thanks.message edited by CPU13

Answer:Booting Stuck at Blank Screen with Cursor

Usually when you can get to Safe Mode it isn't a hardware fault.Might be worth doing a System Restore from Safe Mode to a date just before the problem came along. It will keep your own data.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

So basically my Nvdia was acting up and a tutorial told me to uninstall the drivers in safe mode and reinstall. but my BIOS menu wouldnt show up so I followed another method using msconfig that manually launched it into safe mode. I didn't realize that it launched in safe mode everytime until you disable it. unfortunately I can't disable it as the computer sends no image to my screen and is blank. so if there is a method to basically force your pc to start in normal mode I could disable the settings and all would be good.

Answer:Stuck in safe mode with blank screen. need help

Hi, when stuck in safe mode press the ctrl + alt + del buttons together. From the options select "TaskManager" in task manager "new task" type msconfig, go to "Boot" now undo the safe boot option. Restart.

I was working on my thinkpad L421 last night and it showed some error and stated your laptop needs to be restarted. I did not read the notification clearly. Since then the laptop whenever restarted shows blank screen. Pressing F8 or thinkvantage also did not help. After that I googled from my phone about the problem. I removed battery, pressed start key for a minute, waited for a minute, inserted the battery and restarted. It still showed blank screen. Now in the morning, after around 12 hours, I started the laptop and it showed thinkpad logo screen. The laptop was only on batteries. I was very glad but it did not move ahead even after waiting for 5-10 mins. Pressing blue thinkvantage did not help. I connected the laptop to power source and immediately the thinkpad screen went blank. Now even after performing all measures mentioned above, I cannot even see the thinkpad screen and the screen us blank like last night. Please help.

So I was having a problem with my laptop stuck in a "Diagnosing Your PC" loop and then it would say, "Bad_system_config_info", and start the loop over again.

So I booted from a Windows 10 USB to repair/reset it with the "Keep My Files" option. Since then, it's just been stuck on a blank blue screen for the last 20 minutes.
Is this part of the reset process or did something go wrong?

Answer:Windows 10 reset from repair USB stuck on blank blue screen

After over an hour of the blank screen, now it says, "Reset this PC" with "Getting things ready" under it. Been like that for 30 minutes.

Hey everybody. A little while ago, I updated my Dell XPS M1530 laptop NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphics card and the next day, the display was all blue with horizontal lines going through it. There was sound, but that's all what I was seeing. I turned it on and off again and again but to no avail. I left it on for a while and then suddenly the display cleared up and the Start up repair screen was on and it stayed that way for 12 hours so I turned it off and then on again( bear with me here lol). The BIOS screen appeared so did the OS loading screen later but that was about it. The screen was black. Safe mode wont work, it always stops at

System restore wont work also, it just freezes, Startup repair apparently freezes too, it keeps loading for 12 hours with no change. Im reallly confused and I don't know what to do. Im trying to avoid using the Factory Image Restore since I have so many important files that I dont want to delete. I really appreaciate any help over here guys. Thanks =)

I have a refurbished, out-of-warranty Gateway Profile 5 desktop. The screen is totally blank. I contacted Gateway. They are pretty confident the built-in display is defective. I was able to attach a second display which would also go blank just after the Windows XP Pro splash screen appeared. Using the 2nd display, I was able to access the bios. When I looked at the display setup, it was set to LCD & CRT. Not thinking, I changed the setting to LCD since I wasn't using a CRT. That disconnected my 2nd display, so I now have two totally blank screens. How can I re-access the 2nd display and then also avoid a blank screen when Windows XP boots up?

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

I hope this is the right forum, I appologise if it's not and would welcome any suggestions about where else I might look for help.

I'll start by quoting my OP from another forum:

So I just picked up a new SATA hard drive and installed it in my computer. To do so I shut down my machine, unplugged everything, plugged the 2nd HDD into the power supply and motherboard leaving the original HDD as is, replugged everything, and switched on my machine. Then at startup it became unresponsive. The screen just has the big Dell logo, "Dell DXP051 Series", and down the bottom a status bar paused at 'BIOS Revision A07'. I can't enter BIOS settings or anything like that.

So after nothing happened for a few minutes I switched the computer off, opened it up, and unplugged the new HDD from the motherboard, power up again, and the machine just goes straight to the same page. Repeat the process plugging the new HDD in place of the old one and the exact same thing happens.

FWIW, I'm 90% sure the startup process usually has a screen or two before the one I'm stuck at, but when I switch on my machine it just goes straight to it, so there's no option to enter BIOS settings or anything like that. Also, on the front panel of my computer there are two backlit lights on '1' and '4'. I have no idea what they are, I'd never noticed them before. '2' and '3' light up and alternate when I first power on, but ... Read more

I have an Acer laptop which is about two years old. It started to run slowly and not very efficiently - then the screen started to go blank. Sometimes it goes blank when i am using it or when i am not. . I can see the computer is actually still processing so the whole computer does not shut down. I would be able to reboot and then the computer would be fine again. It started to do this more and more frequently until it was happening every couple of minutes and then my computer stopped booting up and loading software. I took my laptop to a recommended pc repair shot who reinstalled windows (unfortunately). It definitely was running much better and the screen stopped going blank. about 10 days later and the computer is running well still but the screen is starting to go blank again regularly - every 10-20 minutes! is this a virus/software/hardware??? thanks in advance for any help you are able to give me!

Answer:My computer screen keeps going blank even thought the computer is still running.

When the system is operating properly, set a System Restore point.

Then start out by updating all drivers and programs to the latest avalilable version.
Get all drivers from the PC Manufacturer's website, and get the updated programs from the program manufacturer's website. If you cannot find an update for a program older than 2 years, uninstall it.

Then visit Windows Update and get all updates
Then visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center
Then visit Windows Update and get any other available updates

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Hello everyone, last night my computer started acting funny, I got an error in AVG Update Manager saying update failed so I uninstalled it (btw it was AVG 2012 Free Version). I then installed AVG 2013 Free Version w/30 free trial of the complete version, I installed last night. I had no problems after doing this last night. So a couple of hours ago I turned on the computer and everything worked fine, no issues starting up, I have no programs running and decide to shut the computer down when it froze during shut down so I did a reset by holding the power button for a few seconds.

I restarted and ran in safe mode with no problems so I decide to run an AVG Command Line Scanner and this is what came up after it finished running and logged the report.....

Every thing was going on well. After using both operating systems few days I decided to go back on the factory installed operating system so I restarted the computer and press esc to enter in the startup menu for system recovery( here I want to mention that once I used system recovery because when  my vista was running slow due to many software installed so I used system recovery to installed a fresh copy of  vista, and I enjoyed it till I installed linux so I was familiar of system recovery) well I press esc to enter into startup menu and then press F9 key that?s for system recovery but this time the computer  screen goes where it gives option to run windows or Linux. Answer:Computer stuck on the very first screen

first i suppose you don't have any data on your H.D.Dsecondly check if those recovery DVD you have it are in working state (As we are now going to perform destructive Installation)This might be happening due to bad or wrong boot sector installed on your PC & somehow its affecting your PC to boot into Vista,.(maybe system recovery was not performed properly) Step 1: Turn the HP computer completely off.Step 2: Turn the computer back on, and immediately begin to repeatedly tap the "F9" key on the keyboard.Step 3: Boot your HP computer with Recovery DVD Disc 1.Step 4: Choose the "Advanced" option on the recovery menu, then select "Destructive System Recovery." Choose "Next."Step 5: Choose "Yes" to confirm that you wish to perform a Destructive System Recovery. This process will utilize data stored on a hidden hard drive partition to reinstall Windows, along with all of the HP software that was originally included with the computer. Note: This method is going to Delete All the partition from HP computer & recreate Recovery Partition, then Restore Vista from recovery Partition.

After the system update last night my computer has been acting weird. It started up at first but then it froze so i decided to hold down the power button to turn it off. after that when i turned it on again i get stuck in the welcome screen. Somebody help!

Answer:My computer is stuck on welcome screen. Help !

Maroonblue,
The update was a large one and had like 14 or 15 sections. I would turn the system on and leave it for at least 10 minutes and then report back if it didn't eventually move past the loading stages. If anything I would try to restore back to before the updates when the system was working as normal. Then from there check for updates and proceed installing the suggested updates.

15 seconds and then the computer shuts off. After it is off I am able to press the start button once again and when it does it ask me what mode I want to start in (safe mode or regular mode).

What could be wrong?

I have a Vaio Laptop. When I turn it on, it shows the logo and then it goes to a blank screen. I don't know how to get into safe mode (the f8 key does not go to safe mode). When I turn off the comp and turn it back on again, it still goes to the blank screen. I can get to the setup menu but that's about it. Any help would be appreciated.P.S. I only say blank screen because the color is off and I can't see part of the left side of the screen. So any advice regarding a blinking cursor or blue screen is appreciated as well. Thank you.

Hello everyone I am new here but so far reading all the topics it seems pretty helpful! Anyway I'm pretty good at repairing puters but I went all new style on my new one and I have nothing to test my equipment with. Im building a higher end gaming system so I went with SLI setup, now everything is new and is all made for SLI, yet at boot up all I get is a blank screen and one long beep followed by two short. Easy enough the booklet on the video card says that it means the video card or motherboard is bad, well without the video card in the same beeps happen, also the north bridge cooler gets pretty warm, normal?   Note: At first start-up it ran fine, installed xp and ran NFS Most Wanted smooth, then started a defrag and bam black screen of death. reseated the card, reset bios, and check RAM presto it worked for about 5min then froze.550w PS w/ SLIEVGA 6800 PCI-eAsus A8N-SLI mb w/ AMD3500512mb pc3200Coolermaster water coolerAnybody expericence the same problem? I cant tell if its a mb, video card or some other problem. I checked the BEEP POST and I know its a video code but is there any way it would be a mb issue?

When playing particular computer games (CIV IV and Oblivion) after a short while my screen just goes blank, and the power button goes from green to amber. The computer itself seems to carry on as normal. If I am playing Football Manager or just using itunes the screen never goes blank. I have to turn the computer off and then on again to re-use the computer, there then appear to be no apparent problens (unless I try and play either of the games again). Any help on how to solve this would be much appreciated.

Can anyone help me with this?  On occasions (quite regularly) whilst I am typing my screen will suddenly go blank.  When it comes back on after a few seconds, the last few letters I typed are all transposed.  It is driving me crazy and slowing me down.  Any suggestions.  Windows XP.  Touch type, so not being able to see what is on the screen is not affecting my typing.  Working on a lap-top.  Someone, somewhere, must know what is causing this! It's so frustrating!  The transposed letters are not typing errors, the screen transposes the letters every time it goes blank.  It does the same whether I am online, sending e-mails or working with the word processor.  Help!!!

Answer:My computer screen going blank

Perhaps the monitor is faulty. Check if plug(s) are firmly inserted. I expect the letters get transposed because you have lost sight of what you are typing.

Answer:blank computer screen

Any beeps when you switch it on? Any changes to the PC lately, crashes (or more frequent crashes), blue screens? Any strange noises from the unit when it's on? Possibilites include overheating (and subsequent damage to the CPU) or failing power supply. If the guarantee has run out you can take the side off the machine and see if loads of dust and fluff has collected inside and around the fans, that would point to overheating, but it sounds as if the damage has already been done on that front.

My computer screen is blank! I've been having some problems for the past week or two with my computer and then yesterday I went away from it for a while and when I came back it looked like the "blue screen of death" was up but there was no text, just a blank blue screen. Now whenever I start up nothing happens, it seems like everything works on the tower but there's just a blank screen, and the light on the moniter blinks like there's nothing to read.
The only recent hardware added was a wireless network a few weeks ago, but it seems to work fine. Recent problems include having to update my sound driver due to cpu restarting and now this, however I have had plenty of graphics card problems, but not for a while.

Built the computer a year ago and haven't had much problems after the first month or two. I'm running windows XP with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card, and ECS socket 478 motherboard, and a 350W power supply, if you need any more info on specs let me know. I figured it's one of these 3 screwing up, so is there any way to test it or something I can do?

Hi,
I am a newbie on the site and I am in need of help. First time I responded to an old thread, so I hope I am doing this correctly this time.
We have a computer
AMD athlon 3000+ w/heatsink and fan
1 gig 2700 ddr333 ram with heatsinks over ram sticks
fx5200 128 mb
aopen mobo ak79d400vn
520 watt atx power supply

Problem: Tried to upgrade video card to 6600. Installed it and drivers and the computer starts up, fan is running, but nothing else a blank screen. Purchased off ebay mainly for processor and mobo to upgrade son's computer. Thought this would solve son's gaming problems ( BF2 should be hung for its greediness in cpu and video power) Now I am stuck.
Brought it to the repair shop and the guy said mobo fried and continued to tell me how bad the AMD cpu's are and tried to make me one for $$$$. Is the guy right?
Question: Is there a way to tell if the mobo is indeed blown and /or the cpu and can I change out the processor into another computer? I hate to think nothing can be salvaged on it.
I hope I haven't forgotten to say anything- Please forgive !

Answer:Computer screen blank

Brought it to the repair shop and the guy said mobo fried and continued to tell me how bad the AMD cpu's are and tried to make me one for $$$$. Is the guy right?Click to expand...

The guy is not right. Amd cpus are very good. For gaming they're tops, and for normal tasks they're no slouch either. My guess is he'd rather make the $$$$(big bucks), than make just a few $$(bucks) helping you fix your current one.

So, are you saying your system works with the 5200, but when you install the 6600, it doesn't work? If so, what sysptoms does it give? Lights, noises, fans, etc.

You could put the cpu into another pc with the same socket type(it also has to support the same cpu bus speed), to test it. Or you could swap the motherboard in your current pc and see if it works then, but both tasks are somewhat of a pain(the cpu will need thermal grease applied, and motherboards take a while to remove). You probably have a "socket A" amd cpu, since you say athlon, and not athlon64.

Also, your new card may be stressing your psu, if it's underpowered/faulty. You might want to list the brand and specs(amps per voltage rail), if you know the info.

I have a sony RZ402P from approx 5 years ago. Now it was playing up lately so i decided to format it so i did. so after finish formatting put all the backup files and folders and updated to SP3 and install all the updates. Then it was working well after a few restarts and shutdowns.

3 hours later my mum decide to use it but it didn't come up the screen still on standby (blinking) and the keyboard lock keys come on then goes off again. So i diced to investigate the problem. I even tried removing the cleaning CPU Fan(whcih caused the problem the last time), RAM. As am deaf, my parent saids it not sounding right. and the DVD drives wouldn't open fully it will just peek out then back in, nothing is responding. So i took the HDD out to use on my current working PC to backup all the files.

I think its dead? Any ideas which i can try?

Hello,

I was just using my PC last night surfing the internet and doing some other things, but then my screen just went blank and it popped up saying no DVI connection or whatever. My PC still had power and all the fans were going and everything seemed like it had power. My pC has done this before but it was because my 8800GT got to hot and overheated. So I checked the cables and everything was tight so then I shut of my PC and waited a little while and turned it back on and got nothing not even the bios/bootup screen but everything had power and all my fans were running including the one on my 8800GT. Just nothing on my screen. So I turned it off again took off the side of my case and checked everything in there and everything was tight. So then I just left it off overnight and this morning tried again but still got nothing just power. So I decided to unplug everything and have only my memory and hard drive(s) plugged in and my Graphics card and tried just that and I still got nothing just power to my graphics card fan, PSU, and the CPU/heatsink fan. So I don't know what could be the problem. Do you think my graphics card could have gone bad and if so how do I switch back to my on board graphics, or if not what else could be the problem.
Thanks,

I just got this HP pavilion 762n last year. Now whenever I turn the computer on it won't respond(Goes to a Blank Black Screen) and the only way I can make the computer respond is to go to safe mode and UN-install the Graphic Card, then restart the computer back again. Once I've done that the computer would work, but I can't watch Videos or play Video Games on the computer. There also would be these little blue lines on the computer screen (Sometimes their would be alot of the lines and sometimes the lines would be made by the trail of my mouse).

I've tried lots of ways to fix the computer. I've tried:

- Un-installing and re-installing my graphic card (Nvidia Geforce4 MX420 graphics card with TV-Out) that came with the computer.

- Rolling Back My Graphic Card.

- Updating My Drive from Windows Update.

- I've tried using a program that test my computer and tells me whats wrong with it. It said I got a problem with something like the VIDEO MEMORY CARD and I don't know what that is.

Is the Only way I can fix this is to buy another Graphic Card. I do not want to waste $200.00. Please Help Me!

Thank You.

HP COMPAQ SG3-220UK
I was using my computer as normal the other day. Browsing the internet, gaming etc.
After a while, the system froze. I couldn't move the mouse and the keyboard wouldn't do anything (numlock, caps wouldn't turn on/off).
The only thing I could do was to hold in the Power button to turn the thing off.
After it turned off, I waited a few seconds and proceed to switch it back on again.
The Compaq splash screen appeared with the words beneath. No other options such as the usual F8/F12/Esc.
The computer had completely frozen. It would not progress past this screen. I could not press any keys on the keyboard to enter setup or BIOS. After waiting about 5 minutes, I had to hold the power button down again to switch it off.
Using my macbook, I've googled the problem to see if others have had it. People recommended clearing CMOS by moving the jumper to the further pins.
I tried this but it failed to make a difference.
After trying it yet again, the Compaq splash screen eventually showed the rest of the options (F12, Esc and such) after about 2 minutes of waiting.
Windows 7 began to load and I got to the login screen.
But none of my USB devices would work. My mouse was getting power as the LED was responding inside it but it wasn't moving the pointer on-screen. No lights were on the keyboard.
So, I could not type in my password to log on.
Again, all I could do was press the power button to shut down.
I got the "Shutting down" screen for about 2 minutes.

Answer:Computer Stuck On Logo Screen

1.  Dell Logo.  Stop staring at the Dell logo during boot.  Because you're having problems booting your system you should be viewing the Power-On Self Test (POST) diagnostic screen instead.  You need to become familiar with what a normal boot looks like for your machine.  If you get "lucky" you might see a difference for an abnormal boot (different messages, time delays?).  Maybe it appears hung because it's taking time to count up and check the memory? To view the POST diagnostic screen, try hitting the "Escape" key when the Dell logo appears.  Hopefully this is the right key to take down the Dell logo and show you the diagnostic steps that happen during boot. You should also change your BIOS settings via CMOS setup to display the most information available during boot.  Within CMOS setup look for and set the following POST behavior parameters:    Fast boot :  Off  (Off - slows boot as more POST diagnostics are run)    Numlock key:  On    POST Hotkeys:  Setup & Boot Menu    Keyboard Errors:  ReportThe information above was taken from page 113 of your Operator's Manual:    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/om/WD846A02.pdf2.  Dell Diagnostics:Your could try running the Dell diagnostics that originally came with your system:    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim5150/en/sm/tsho... If i turn my dektop on without the flash drive it comes up and says Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

If i insert the flash drive it freezes..
If i start the computer with the flash drive in, it wont even get to the screen it freezes at the screen that tells me to press f12 for this, esc for that etc etc.
This person has the same problem..
except I dunno if they mentioned it was a boot device on her external drive.

And I cant boot from my origonal Hard drive because I believe its gone bad, If i start it with that hard drive it says Reboot and select proper boot device, its like it doesnt even recognize it, which im guessing means its gone bad.. But it wont freeze with that hard drive, but I also cant do anything.

Also can it be a virus if so how can i get rid of it? Cause even if i unplug that hard drive and put in my thumb drive, it still freezes, where can the virus be?
Err I just need some help with this.

I am not real sure if this is the place for this ? but here it goes (maybe some can point me in the right direction);I have a T-22 Thinkpad and when I turn it on it goes to the Thinkpad screen with the F1 and F12 help topics on bottom, left, of screen. There it stays! I have to repeatedly turn it off & on to get it to work. It works great when it is running though. Seems like if it is left off for a while, it works better.I was told it was my hard drive so I bought a new one, plugged it in and it does the same thing. Doesn't recognize the CD when installed either.I am totally confused/ignorant of this matter. Any clues? Thanks

Can you get into the BIOS and check the Boot Order? Make sure it's the CD/DVD Drive First, and then the Primary Hard Drive. Now see if it boots into Windows. If it doesn't, put the Windows CD into the computer, restart, and see if you can boot from the CD.

Hello,

I am new to this forum.  How are you all doing?

I have a computer that is running Windows XP and it is stuck in the reboot screen.  The screen says something like Windows apoligizes for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully.

Then it gives you choices:  safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last know config, and start windows normally.

No matter which option I choose, it goes to the reboot screen with the Windows XP icon hovering in the middle of the screen for about one second, then it immediately goes back to the reboot screen I described above.  If I do not choose an option, you can see it counting down in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and then the Windows XP icon comes up for a second, but immediately goes back to the reboot screen.

Does anyone have any ideas on something I can try to get this thing going again?  Thanks.

Hello there,
Sometimes when I restart my computer it will just freeze at the motherboard logo screen and I have to turn it off.
It will start working again if I wait long enough.
Sometimes it passes the boot screen with the ok beep. But the freeze at the next black screen or in the windows xp logo screen.

Could you suggest what possibly happened.

It will start up and go to the login screen, and as soon as I put my password in to my account, it either goes to a black screen, or will start up and not let me open anything. I have an Admin account open on the computer as well, and it lets me log on to that with out issues, but some times has problems opening chrome like it does with my personal account. What can I do to solve this?

Hello there

My computer is stuck at the windows update screen when I boot it up. A week or so ago I had some trouble installing a program. Looking for a solution, eventually I found that my windows hadn't been updating for several months. Trying to update manually didn't work and I got an error message. Googling that error message was what brought me to vistax64.com in the first place, and after reading around a bit I managed to determine that I was missing my Windows Update Module (unsure about the exact name). I followed a tutorial that led me into regedit to delete some keys.

Now, to the matter at hand: after deleting these keys and restarting, my windows got stuck at the update screen. It says something like:

"Configuring update 3 of 3 - 0%
Do not turn off or bla bla bla"

for a few minutes, without the percentage changing, then restarts. Problem is, when it restarts it displays the exact same message and does the same thing all over again. So it gets caught in a restart loop.

I have tried booting from my Vista DVD and have tried the startup repair thing, but that isn't any help. I don't have any save points to restore from, nor a backup.

So - the question is: Is there anything I can do about this without having to format and reinstall Windows?

I think there is chance but of course I'm not guarantee it will work

Boot Vista DVD

Choose language>>repair computer>>command promp and type:

ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.OLD

press ENTER

ren C:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.OLD

press ENTER

copy C:\Windows\System32\config\regback\SOFTWARE C:\Windows\System32\config

press ENTER

copy C:\Windows\System32\config\regback\SYSTEM C:\Window\System32\config

press ENTER,and try run system normally

If it will work

This machine is completely stuck on the post screen. On the bottom of the screen, it says press delete to enter into setup, bu tno matter what I press, it won't go anywhere. It is a brand new mobo with a brand new sempron cpu. I read around and believe it may need a bios update in order to use the sempron, so I downloaded an update from website, and put it on a floppy. Problem is, I cannot get it to boot into the bios, boor from floppy, or go past the post screen at all. Please help.

:waveI'm trying to install an OS (XP Pro) on a old computer with an old HHD first I tried a Maxtor I thought was good ... at least it was when I took it out of the computer I worked on ... it would boot up and go into the windows install set up ... then it would tell me it can't find the hhd. I put a WD drive in ... it has data on it, but it was not use as a master drive. Now when I boot up I can't get past the gateway screen. Can't even get into the bios. It just sits there ... any one know what the problem is?:confused

Answer:Computer Stuck At Intro Screen

I'm not sure I understand the problem. You have two HDD's in the machine? You said it was Old Computer and Old HDD so I will assume IDE. Are the Master/Slave jumpers set properly?

If that is not the case, Are you sharing the ribbon the CDROM is on with the HDD? If so, it is still probably Master /Slave jumper issues. If your not sharing the ribbon then perhaps the HDD is attached to a ribbon that needs the jumpers set to Cable Select.

Greetings all,

I'm having a problem I haven't encountered before. My computer will boot up Windows XP as normal, then after 1-2 minutes the screen will go blank and will not respond (must manually turn off power switch), although CPU fans and power are still running.

Rebooting is also problematic, as often the lights turn on, but there's no HD activity, BIOS beep, etc. Will only boot every 5th or 7th time, which it does successfully, only to go blank and unresponsive again after a minute or two.

I've tried booting in Safe Mode and have the same problem.

Any suggestions? I take it this would be a hardware problem?

Cheers,
Jeremy

Hello to the readers out there

I am having a problem with my computer. I dont know if any one can offer there support to this problem, or there could be some one out there that has experienced the same problem.

Here is the problem. My computer screen, seems to go blank, being all white screen. It seems to happen, when you do stuff on your computer. like clicking on icons to bring up the internet, also yahoo mail etc. To get rid of the white screen I need to click on to the desktop icon to make the white screen go away. You think it has gone, but it is still there, when you do the same thing clicking onto icons it seems to keep on going blank white screen. It gets annoying clicking on the desktop icon all the time.

Some days the white screen may not come up.

Would any one please, provide info about this problem I have.

Thank you for reading.

With every computer I've owned before, the screen going blank does not lock my computer. A quick move of the mouse or touch of the keyboard used to restore you to your logged in session instantly. With my T410, any time the screen goes blank, my computer locks itself and I have to swipe my finger to get back in. This is very annoying.I can disable my computer locking itself when it goes to sleep and that fixes this, but I WANT my computer to lock when it goes to sleep, otherwise the finger swipe to resume isn't even an option....plus if my computer is asleep the chances are much higher that I am not near it...and I want that security in place. Does anyone know of a way to get Lenovo's software to only lock the computer after sleep or hibernate and NOT simply after the screen goes blank?I have never seen a computer lock itself after going blank before so I really have no point of reference to fixing this. It just occurred to me that I might be too loose with my words. I am not talking about the "screen going blank" like back in the days of screensavers and the screen still being on....I am talking about the screen turning off, as in a function of power management.

Answer:Computer locks after screen goes blank

Screen turning off is controlled by Screen off timer, typically 5 or 10 minutes, what about your screen saver timer, if they are the same, you will see screen turned off, and at the same time, the screen saver program starts!

When I turn on my computer it shows nothing but a blank screen. Doesn't even go into bios 19 out of 20 times. Every now and then it boots into BIOS and begins loading Windows, but freezes at the loading screen. What could the problem be? A couple months earlier the computer would randomly shut down while I was using it. I'm assuming the problem might be the probably the power supply. It's an emachine t3624: http://emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T Series&model=T3624#

And yes, I know I really need to upgrade to a new computer... but I have absolutely no money I can put towards buying one at the moment. It would take me at least a couple months to be able to afford even a cheap one....

Hey!

A little more than a year ago I built a decent computer (with your help. thanks!).
A couple of months later the computer mysteriously stopped working and the only sign of life was a lamp glowing on the motherboard. The fans also spun for less then a split second when trying to power the computer for the first time after plugging in the power cable. I figured it was either the motherboard or the CPU, but I didn't have the time or the money to look into it back then.

Now, more than 6 months later I've found the time and some money to try and take care of it. Yesterday I tested some parts and bought a new motherboard. After installing the motherboard, the computer will turn on, but it will turn off after a few seconds then turn back on and remain that way until i turn it off manually. During that time my screen remains black. I've tested all components except the CPU now so I'll probably have to buy a new one. But I have a few questions before I do that.

First off here is my Specs:
1x MSI Twin Frozr II GTX 580
1x Corsair TX750
1x Intel i5 2500k with stock fan
2x Gskill Ripjaws X 4gb
1x Samsung SpinPoint F3 HD103SJ 32MB 1TB
1x NZXT Hades case
the new motherboard I bought was: ASUS P8Z77 LK
and the old one was: Asus P8P67 Pro B3

Do you think there is anything else that might be causing my problems? I've tested the ram, Graphics card, Psu and Hdd on another machine and they all work. I've tried putting the ram in different slots with the same result as earlier. I've trie... Read more

Answer:Computer won't Boot, Blank screen

Have you tried to setup the system out of the tower. You could be getting a ground out. Just find a box to set the motherboard on and put on your video card ram CPU and power it up.
You will need to cross the two power pins to fire it up.Try with just one ram stick if you have two then try the other. after you try that and if you still have no luck. take off your CPU fan and put your finger against the CPU chip and fire it up for just a few seconds to see if the CPU starts to heat yo. If it does you still have voltage going to the CPU and it no doubt is still good.

Hello,

I have two questions that might be connected.
I wasn't sure about where to post this, because I'm not sure if the problem is my screen, windows 7 drivers, video card, bios or something else.

I used to have two screens connected to my computer, now I only have one (I think it has something to do with the problems).

Problem1: Every time I power my computer, the computer itself turns on, but the screen stays off until windows 7 loads, then the motor turns on.

Problem2: Many of the times I put my computer in sleep mode, and try to turn in back on, I hear the computer turns on, but the screen shows nothing.

The screen itself is fine, if I restart and let windows load properly, the monitor works.
I updated my video card drivers.
And now I don't know what to do, I want to format my computer and reinstall windows 7, but I can't get into BIOS and boot from USB / CD because the screen is blank when booting.

Please, help! :)

Purchased new computer approx. 2 weeks ago. First 2 days worked fine but on 3rd day computer appeared to shut down for no reason. Power was still on, but screen was blank, would not respond to any input. After pressing 'reset' several times computer booted normally. Over the next few days it repeated problem about once or twice a day, I then noticed the clock had reset to April 2002. After about a week the problem had gotten steadily worse, I also noticed the message CMOS BATTERY STATE LOW. Is this a valid error message or just a sign of something bigger? I've never gotten this message on any computer I've ever owned. I removed all my devices except video and booted to a floppy with the same results.

BTW, I have a Athlon XP 2000 w/256k and the mainboard is a ECS K7S5A. I've checked all my devices on a second computer with no problems.

When I turned on my computer its only an orange bar. I cannot even see the windows logo or even get into safe mode.

The night before I was using my computer as normal and everything was fine, it shut down completly. The next morning turned on the computer and all I see is a blank screen. Now keep in mind. This has already happened to me about 3 months ago. Some symptoms I just replace the video card and that fixed the problem.

Back to the problem, Listening to the computer as I turned it on. There are no "Beeps" or any sound referring to any problems. I open the case and all the fans are spining, hard drive make regulars start up sounds as well. BUT it never loads windows.

I went to the store to buy other video card (brand new) installed it correctly and it doesn't fix the problem. At this point I am thinking it's my motherboard or it's my monitor, which i know isn't the problem because I borrowed my friends computer (case) and I am using it on my monitor as I write this.

2 days later

I removed Everything out of the computer case (motherboard, CPU, harddrive etc...) cleaning all the dust off of it.

1) I tested all of the hardware on a friends computer and they all work.
2) Scan for virus, Did a defrag, scandisk of the C drive repaired everything on the harddrive.
3) I installed all the hardware back on my computer and tested it. but still nothing works.

At this point I am getting very angry. I'm pressing bottons restarting th... Read more

My computer is having this weird problem where when I finish logging in, the desktop would just be purely blank. The mouse cursor does show up and i can control it, but none of the normal desktop things would show up (wallpaper, taskbar, icons...). If I hold down the power button and force shutdown, and then go into the safe mode when i start up, all would be normal (except for the wallpaper of course due to the safe mode). If i restart from there i would be able to get my desktop back. However if i reboot the problem comes back.

Also, the computer lags significantly when the desktop is gone since the task manager usually goes to "not responding" state.

Is there a way i can fix this problem? Restore point would not be an option since the problem started about two years ago when it was not very serious. I tried to locate the problem but explorer.exe and dwm.exe are both there...

Please help!!!!

Answer:Computer Blank Screen After Logon

Could be a problem with corrupted system files. If you can get to a command prompt, type cmd in the search bar, right click the command prompt icon, select run as administrator, and run the command sfc /scannow.

If that doesn't work, try running from a clean boot. Don't try this if you're not comfortable with advanced level troubleshooting. Also be aware, this is a time-consuming methods.
Click the Start button, type msconfig in the search box, press enter.
Click the Services tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click "Disable All" if it is not grayed out.
Click the Startup tab, click "Disable All" and click OK.
Restart the computer. When the System Configuration Utility window appears, check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
If the issue disappears in the clean boot environment, turn half the Microsoft services back on, and restart the computer. If the problem doesn't recur, turn the other half of the Microsoft services back on. Once the problem reoccurs, turn services off and on to narrow it down more specifically.

Or, you can just launch the clean boot troubleshooter from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Hope that helps. But if this has been going on for a while now, it may be hard to pin down at this point.

Hi there,

I have a self made PC with Winfast Foxconn MB, AMD64 3000+ socket 754,
ATI 9250 AGP.

I installed everything, connected the cables but the computer does not turn on. I receive a blank screen and nothing else.

The MB and proccesor worked previously on a different system that I have upgraded.

What can it be?

The FANs are working, I can not turn it off from the power button.

Please help me.

Answer:My computer does not start, blank screen

If you get no beeps Id suspect a bad connection... I have seen this on the CPU. Simply remove it and reseat it. I have also seen bad AMD boards do that. I saw on two seperape occasions exactly what you describe... if I let them sit there for 5 minutes to warm up and then restart them they worked. In that case the problem could be cold solder connections somewhere on the mobo. Not a good situation as most computer users dont have the skill or equipment to find that type of problem.

The other day my daughter told me her computer turned on fine, then the screen flashed on/off and she had the monitor adjustment icons showing on the screen (but they could not be adjusted). On the CPU the power light was on but you could not turn it off by holding in the button. If you pulled the power cord for a few minutes and then plugged it back in the power light came on, it tested the DVD Drive, but it did not run through any start up, the CD did not run and no display other than described above was on the screen. Can not seem to get it to boot for the recovery CD. Any idea what might be wrong? It is an emachines 2800+ AMD Athlon XP Processor.
