Preferred Solution: External hard drive not showing up on my PC

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: External hard drive not showing up on my PC

Hello there,

There are a lot of different reasons for an HDD to stop showing. A few things you can try are:

Try using a different USB cable, make sure it is as short as the original one, or even shorter. This is important it terms of providing enough power for the drive to function properly.

Try connecting it to different USB ports.

Try connecting it to a different PC.

Sometimes the drive can misbehave due to insufficient power even if it appears to be spinning make sure you connect the HDD directly to the USB port and not through a USB hub.

Check if you can see the HDD in Windows Device Manager and in Disk Management. Good luck.

I have an external hard drive, which was one where i bought the case and wiring, and just put in the hard drive from an old computer of mine. It worked great for two years.

Now, whenever i hook it into my usb, it will not show up in my windows explorer. It does, however, show up in my device manager, as "USSB Mass Storage Device". This, combined with the do-DO noise my computer makes when i turn the hard drive on, i know my computer recognizes it, as there. it just wont let me see any of the files on it.

i have un and re installed it several times.

Ihave lots of pictures and such on it, and i do not want to lost them at all.

any help would be great.

Hi guys, I'm having a problem with my external hard drive. It's not showing up under my computer, disk manager or device manager. I have been using it with no problem until hurricane wilma and my power was out for 5 days. When I booted up the computer it wasn't there. it only has a blinking green light usually the light is solid. I tried inserting the disk that came with the hard drive, unplugging the drive from the computer and replugging it neither has worked. I was not using the computer when I lost power. I'm running windows 2000 pro, and Que M3 external drive. Any ideas on what else I can do? Thanks, Danu

Hi,
I have a 1.5 TB Western Digital External harddrive that i purchased couple of months ago, still under warranty. Last night whilst browsing my files in the external it frooze so i did a restart. I noticed that it made a funny noise (not really grinding but not sure how to describe it) it powered on (blue light turned on) but then the hard drive didn't show up in windows explorer and windows 7 re-installed the driver software. I let it install still nothing, so i went to disk management and turns out that it's not intialised! so i went intialise then it went do you want to partition by MBR or GPT, i did MBR, i got an error saying incorrect function. I went into device manager and surely the WD was there. I plugged it in my PC and same issue. I put it on the laptop again and this time it didn't show up in disk management just device manager.

I am not sure what else to do? Please help me out

Answer:External Hard Drive not showing up!

Call WD, see if they have any tech bulletins on that model, does not sound good.

They had a bunch of problems with 1.5 tb drives when they first came out.

I hope you had your data in more than 1 place, it may be gone on that drive.

I'm having quite a problem here. My external hard drive (Astone - 2Tb) isn't showing up on my computer - or anybody else's. I lent it to a friend, and I believe he may have been rough with it (The base is missing 2 screws), and after receiving it back the following day, I plugged it into my laptop. It came up with "Installing device driver software" which is odd, since I've used it on there many times before. Afterward, it would flash in My Computer for a second coloured grey, then disappear. It does not appear in Safety Removal Hardware either. I've tried this on several computers, but with no difference, and the blue light still works. The problem is definitely with the Hard Drive, since thumbdrives still work fine. Reformatting isn't an option, because there are important, irreplaceable files on there. It does, however, show up in control panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. I still can't access it though - When I right-click and go to browse files "Removable Disk (D: )" is written in grey. Is there anything you tech geniuses can do to help? I'm really getting desperate here...

Hi everybody. I have a problem My 3TB Western Digital Hard Drive is not showing up on any PC I connect it to. The light on the drive itself is on, but no where on the PC does it register.

I am pretty sure the disks aren't spinning either, but that is probably because the computer isn't picking it up, and no vice-versa. Any help with this?

Answer:External Hard Drive not showing up anywhere

Please fill in your specs.
http://www.piriform.com/speccy
Some motherboards require that you configure the BIOS to accept larger drives (2, 3Gb>).
If you're positive that the disks aren't spinning, then that's a red flag as to why the computer doesn't see the drive.

So, about 2-3 weeks ago I had been hooking my external hard drive up to a notebook because I was in the process of moving my desktop. Around the time that I was preparing to leave the house, the drive no longer would show up on the computer anywhere. I checked My Computer, and shortcuts that were for the drive said they couldn't find the file to open. Now, no computer will acknowledge that it is plugged in. I am using a Buffalo Ministation. The USB cord works just fine because my phone connects to the computer with no problem.

The only change that happened while I was there was that I added a name-tag thing to the top of it (the one you print out of the hand-held machine). I dunno if that is magnetic or not, but I have since removed it. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi,
I've connected an external Samsung USB hard drive (not a stick) to my fully updated Win 10 PC and it doesn't show up in File manager.
I've gone into Device manager and it shows it as:
'Samsung M3 Portable SCSI Disk Device'
but it's not a SCSI drive.
I tried updating the driver but Windows says it's using the best driver already. This looks like a Windows issue, so what else can I do to force it to recognise the drive?
Thanks.

You can try uninstalling it in Device Manager and see if it will recognise it correctly the next time. You could also try it in another port (after uninstalling it). If you have a choice, try in a usb2 port.

My entire life is on my external hard drive - it's supposed to be my back up. Now I have an issue with that.

I'm running XP with all updated security profiles and the latest SP. I have an external hard drive that has been working fine on this box, but recently, the computer isn't recognizing it. It gives me the whole "driver not found" scenario. But it can't find the driver anywhere on the net, my computer, or anywhere else.

It's a Western Digital hard drive, and I think it's called a Passport drive. Apparently, talking to my dad, they're ****ty little drives. Which sucks. All my music, pictures, and writing (freelance and published fiction writer) was on this drive cause I was going from one box to another.

Help! Please tell me that my data is at least salvageable!!!

I usually use the hard drive with the desktop, however the other day I plugged it into the laptop, it was running at the time, and was accidentally unplugged, since then it doesn't seem to be recognized in either computer. The laptop will make the noise when I plug in the external drive, and it shows up in device and printers. It does not show up in computer management though. I have tried the chkdsk, but it wont work, I am pretty sure I have the right letter, but says no volume. Please help.

Just an add on, the hard drive does light up, but does not spin. I did try installing it in the desktop, but it was not recognized when I tried that.

After awhile of being plugged in the hard drive shows up in disk managment, however when I try to Initialize it, it says I/O Error

Answer:External Hard Drive not showing up.

Hello jimithing33 ,

Getting an I/o error usually isn't a good sign as often it's related to failed hardware. I guess you already tried using different USB port and cable. What model is this HDD? Is it power fed through the USB cable? You could run the manufacturer’s diagnostics tool to see if it will detect it.

Hi,

Can anyone help please? My Windows 10 updated the other day and since the update my EHD isn't showing up on my PC but I know it's there as it is showing in Device Manager and when I right click on it and go to "Properties" it tells me it's working properly, but I can't use it because it's not showing up in my Devices and Drives! I'm going round and round in circles here trying to sort it out.

I tried to update the driver but it said I had the latest one.

I uninstalled the EHD, waited a while then plugged it back in, restarted my PC and it's showing up
again in Device Manager but it's still not showing up in Devices and Drives. :-(

I don't know what else to do..it's there..but I can't' use it and the annoying thing is, many of my programs I use are on the EHD so I can't use them. :-( I use a very old graphics program which I can't get again so really need to get my EHD working.

Thanks in advance.

So I recently purchased and installed a new hard drive in my PS3. To do that I had to reformat my Western Digital 250 GB hard drive to FAT32 format. Ok, so that's all well and good but I then decided to take my PS3, 60 GB HD (the brand escapes me, but it's a big manufacturer of hard drives) and put it in an external hard drive enclosure. I figured that it's a perfectly good hard drive so there was no sense wasting it. Anyway, as technologically impaired as I might sound after this (which I'm really not) I feel compelled to divulge that I actually did not know that two external hard drives shouldn't be too close to each other. As soon as I put one on top of the other, the 60 GB hard drive beeped and a message popped up saying it needed reformatting. So after reformatting everything a second time, I plugged in the hard drives and the 60 GB one showed up but my 250 GB one did not. It's showing up everywhere else (disk management, device manager) but not in My Computer. So I have no access to it at all. Also, I did not need to reformat the 250 GB HD since my computer gave me no message indicating that I should. I'd rather only use reformatting as an absolute last resort since it takes HOURS but if it's necessary that I'll have to break down. Throw other options at me first though.

If I lost you in the midst of all that jumble, tell me, I'd be happy to explain further.

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

Answer:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

Hi all, I purchased a external drive to back up files on our desktop and laptops. I am looking for easy way to do this, do I do all files or do I have to go into all of them one at a time. I say this because one laptop is my daughters, can I just send all her pic and music files all at once. Our main computer(desktop)is windows vista, everyday it's getting louder and louder and each morning its shows a message says configuring and it's like counting down. This takes long time. I looked at the space left. It shows space available on (c) and on d it's full which is recovery so I don't have a clue how files got on there. My hubby doesn't know much about even getting on computer, but when he does it seems something goes wrong. I want to clean up and get rid of files so my son who's 11 can use it for games. It's so slow and I don't want to delete wrong things.  From reading here and just knowing not to delete recovery. How do I clear out space on D...I tried opening some files on it but they all seem to do with the windows system. What can I do with my desktop ?And is it possible to clear out all files from laptop...it is about 5 yrs old...and she has alot of music and pics on there..just wondering if it's worth time to clean out the files. It takes forever to get online and when we do its so slow. Hope I'm not sounding to confusing.any suggestionstygreat site so far

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. You have presented more that one issue. The forum will help you, but some detail is needed. What OS are you using?  What make and model of eternal drive do you use?The proper way to remove programs is in the con control  panel. But Music and pictures files can be copied to a CD-R or DVD-R and removed from the computer. The external drive can also be used to transport files from on PC to another. But using DVD-R or CD-R is preferable. The best use of an external drive is to make a backup of the operating system and programs.Avoid putting files on the recovery partition.

i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

Answer:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".

May be posting in wrong part of the forum, forgive me if I am.

Unfortunately, I have another issue. I just hooked up my external hard drive, which has some of my backed up information on it before I went and reformatted my computer.

However, even though it says that the hard drive is hooked up to the computer, I am unable to actually find it under my computer.

I stopped messing with it due to the fact that I have pictures on this hard drive and much more. I do not want to lose them. I need to take some time out of my day and actually burn these images onto discs so that way I don't lose them completely.

Any suggestions as to why the external hard drive is not showing up under my computer?

Hey there. I have an issue with my Toshiba External Hard Drive not showing up on my new PC. Shows up just fine on my old PC, but doesn't so much as show up in drive management on my new pc. The only real difference between the two systems being the new PC is much faster, and it has 3.0 USB hubs instead of 2.0 USB hubs... I'm about 98% the files are there, the new PC just isn't picking it up. I'll note, though I don't know how much it has to do with anything, my drive when plugged into my old PC will show as a white light and blink white, where on my new PC it is a solid blue color and doesn't flash. And again, on my new PC, doesn't even register or show up as a partition. I will also note, every other USB item I've plugged into the same USB port functions (mouse, keyboard, speakers, thumb drives) and I've tried multiple other ports. It isn't the kind that requires an external power source (just like a giant thumb drive). It has 500 GB's total, and had about 700mb or so free last I had it open on my old PC. This is a link to the same make and model as mine. https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Portable-Hard-Drive/dp/B005J7YA64?th=1Any ideas on how to access my stuff on my new PC?

Answer:Toshiba External Hard Drive not showing on new PC?

Do you have any thumb drives to test on this USB port to see if its a bad port on new computer? It could be possible for 2 of 4 wires to make connection to power the drive but no data communication on the other 2 wires. If other data devices such as a thumb drive work fine then it is likely a driver issue where the controller in the external hard drive Windows doesnt have the proper driver to mount this drive.Solutions to gain access to your data at the new computer are:- Locate the driver needed for Toshiba External USB drive support for your OS and install it so it knows how to mount this drive on new PC.- Move the hard drive inside to a different external drive caddy that the newer OS supports the drivers for- Remove the HDD from the Toshiba external case and mount it direct to a SATA Data and Power connection to a desktop computer- Connect to the old computer through a network share, and have this older computer connected to the Toshiba external drive and then from newer computer access the data on the Toshiba drive through the network share with new computer connected over network to old computer. Old computer has no problems with driver support to mount this drive and so you have access to the data.- Use a newer external hard drive that new computer can use, connect this to old computer and copy entire drive from old drive to new drive and now you have it accessible on new computer.- Connect Toshiba drive to old computer and connect a say 64GB USB stick to the old compu... I have a 1TB external hard disk from Transcend.
I had 4 drives in it with one has BITLOCKER enabled. I was trying to make a drive bootable. But something went wrong and the system hanged up.
Now only 1 drive of the 4 is being shown in the computer.
The disk management shows only one drive with the whole 931gb while the computer is showing the same with the memory i allocated(201gb) to it with all the data.
Drive Letters are getting assigned to other 3 drives, and while trying to access them using DOS, it says "THE DEVICE IS NOT READY".
chkdsk cant find any error, tried some other tools to but no progress.
Please suggest what can fix the problem. Formatting the whole drive and then retrieving data can do, but the most important data are encrypted. Please Help

Answer:External Hard drive not showing all the drives

For the first part, have you thought about using a linux live cd or dvd to access your hdd's contents and pull out what you need and put them somewhere safe ?
Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek

Ubuntu is one way of doing it, I prefer suse v11 or higher to get anything done majorly with hdd disk problems.
Next, you might want to take your external hdd and partition them into 3 parts that you need for whatever your doing.
If not, just give it a 1 hour long format using NTFS, check the drive for errors and finish up with it.

I've attched my 160gb external hard rive to my laptop and it shows up in the device manager under disk drives and USB but does not show on my computer and is unusable.

I've attached it to my PC and it works fine???

Answer:External hard drive not showing in my computer

It depends on your operating system. From past experience XP has no problem, older versions of windows need the correct driver and win95 early version wont see it at all.

Hope that helps. Rik.

I have a 1.5TB WD external hard drive. It was running extremely slow so i ran a defrag and it fixed it. But it also has a mac partition on it so i ran the repair disk thing for mac in disk utility.
However my mac is a laptop so it ran out of battery part way through the operation. Now when i plug it in it both the mac and PC it is not picked up in explorer and Disk management (under computer management).

So no partitions show up in either finder on mac or explorer on windows

Edit: When i connect the hard drive it has a flashing light on it like it normally does when it connecting to pc just before it shows up in explorer. It has been flashing like this for hours as it has been plugged into pc this whole time. when it connects and shows up in explorer and is not in use that light normally stays solid

Answer:Need help with a external hard drive not showing up in explorer

I'd start with test disk:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
\
FWIW: I have Ubuntu on my Netbook. If I start a lengthy operation like defrag on battery, it will ask me if I really want to do that. I've run into a number of prompts like that, and it makes me wonder why Windows never figured that out.

HELP!!!

I have a 500gb external hard drive which, up until a few days ago, was working absolutely fine.

When I would plug it in to my laptop the device was found under 'my computer'.but would not open. Instead when I tried to open it my computer froze and the 'not responding' message was shown, resulting in a forced close of my computer. Now when I attach the hard drive and open 'my computer' the hard drive does not show at all, but 'my computer' still shows the message 'not responding', resulting in a forced close.

I've been on to a couple of forums already and tried the route of right clicking 'my computer', 'manage' and 'disk management'; but the hard drive does not appear there.

I'm at a total loss what to do and would massively appreciate your help as I have backed up company data on to this hard drive.

Thank you in advance!

Answer:External hard drive not showing in My Computer

Hey pcrquals. I would try the drive in another pc to narrow down where the problem is, a problem with the drive itself, or a problem with the pc recognizing the drive, which might be a problem with the USB port(s) or with the USB drivers. Does another USB device like a flashdrive work when plugged into the same port?

Hi, I have a USB3 1TB WD Elements external hard drive which has stopped responding.
I was using it with the laptop sorting out files I'd backed up ready to put back onto my laptop after a 'return to factory settings'. It worked no problem.

Then I attached it to my TV to watch some stored films from it. At first the logo's showed and it tried to play some then just became unresponsive and was not even recognised as being attached to the TV. The light came on the hard drive as if it was working. We are travelling in a motorhome, and during this time the 12 volt power consumption acted as if a film was playing. There was ample power available.

When I attached it back onto my laptop it made the usual noise indicating that a USB device had been attached and the lights came on the hard drive, but it does not show up in Windows Explorer.
The first few times I got the green usb logo bottom right task bar, and it showed there as being attached when I click to remove a device. Now it does not seem to get the green usb logo even.

It makes the usual sounds when attached and detached.

I have tried 2 different laptops with same results.

I know there were some files on the hard drive when I got it. One was for a software trial and a couple of others. If I have deleted these accidentally, could that have caused the problem?

All my back up stuff is on there, so please can anyone help?

Thanks, Jan

I have had a WD Hard drive connected to my computer for over a year and since added a second one in a 'firewire' daisy chain. The original is a 250G and the new one is a 500G. BOTH have been working for months but, on occasion, one or the other "disappears".

In the past I have restarted my computer and it shows up but, that is not happening this time. Oddly enough the one that is NOT showing up is the original 250G HD. My computer recognizes the 500G that is 'daisy chained' to it but NOT the original 250G.

How does this happen? Can I prevent this in the future? And...more importantly ... how can I fix this??

Thank you for any help you can provide

What windows version do you have on the new PC
and what Windows version was on the PC you use to copy the drives

Are they in a case - does the case need power , is that working on all three drives?

Hi guys,
I bought a brand new buffalo ministation 500gb hard drive, plugged it into my laptop and everything as working fine.It was recognised in my computer and i proceeded to transfer a file from another external hard drive onto it.This caused my laptop to freeze,so i removed my new hard drive and so the problems began
The hard drive shows up in device manager and disc management but not in my computer
In disc management,it is under Disc 2,offline and not initialised and is unallocated.
When i try and initialize or right click offline i get the message "I/O device error"

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it is very frustrating

I have tried different USB ports and USB cables to no avail

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Showing On My Computer

"i get the message "I/O device error"

That almost certainly indicates that the drive in question is faulty. It's by no means unheard of for a new drive to be faulty.

First, I apologize if this question has been posted before but I tried searching on this site for the answer but didn't seem to find one. Here is my problem. I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop running Vista Home Premium which has been giving me problems since the day I purchased it. After many calls to Toshiba and taking it back to the store of purchase, the only answer I get is: Format it! So after creating the recovery cds I have to back up bazillions of files. My brother is letting me use his hard drive which is in a SSK USB enclosure. Unfortunately I do not know the make of the hard drive in the enclosure and he is away so I cannot ask him. Here is the problem:
1. I plug it into the USB port and the laptop makes the sound of finding new hardware and the little icon appears saying "safely remove hardware"
2. I click on My Computer and the hard drive is no where to be found
3. I clicked on Device Manager and I can see it under USB Mass Storage Device
4. I go to Disk Management and I can see it as Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized

I have never connected an external hard drive before so I'm a little scared to Initialize it because I know my brother has lots of files already stored on it and I do not want to erase them. I know he did have it connected to his Mac pc and his Macbook so i'm not sure if this is what is causing the problem. All I want to do is backup my files so I can format this laptop that is causing me such frustration!

I am having an issue with a Seagate external USB hard drive that I have connected to my Windows 7 PC. It is powered on when I start my computer. When I go to "my computer" to look for the drive, it is not there. I disconnect power to the drive and hear the Windows hardware disconnect sound, leading me to believe that Windows did acknowledge that is was indeed connected. I plug the hard drive back in and suddenly the drive shows up and all is well. Why is this happening and what can I do to make it work normally?

I'll also add that when I start my computer with the drive turned off, when I do power up the drive...nothing. It only seems to work when the drive is on when Windows is started. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

I have a 320GB external hard drive from WD which I was using to back up my personal laptop running XP Pro. My laptop has since crashed and I need to access the files on my external while the laptop is being repaired. I have a laptop from work running Vista and the external does not show up in My Computer when I plug it in. I suspect this is because the work laptop's cd drive and my external both have the E drive letter.

My question is this: is there a way to access my files on the work computer without formatting the external and losing all my backed up documents? I am under the impression that giving my hard drive a new letter will require it to be partitioned/formatted?

Answer:Vista WD External hard drive not showing up, don't want to format

The hd letter shouldn't have anything to do with it normally. But your work computer may be locked down in such a way that it is. But no, you do not have to reformat to get a new drive letter. See if you can get into disk management from the administrative tools control panel, in there you can change drive letters (ie - make the cd drive drive X or something temporarly).

People have been able to recover from "drive gone unallocated" by using MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Download here: Best Free Partition Manager Freeware and free partition magic for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Vista and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.
You can install the program in Windows, or run it off a Bootable CD or flash drive.

You then use the tool to Rebuild the MBR (assuming the disk was originally initiated MBR and not GPT.)
Directions here: How to Rebuild MBR with partition magic? Partition Wizard Rebuild MBR Video Help.

If the rebuild is successful then you need to give the partition(s) a drive letter, which you can do in PW also.

See if that works.

Problem:-
My external hard drive stopped showing up in My Computer, but it was working fine before.

1- I think "And I'm NOT Sure" this happened after I Unplugged it without using "Safely Remove Hardware", I'm Totally aware that unplugging it while it's in use could damage it, but when I tried to "Safely Remove It" it told me "Windows can't stop your device Because a program is still using it", and I was in a hurry, so I unplugged it without using "Safely Remove Hardware".

2- Few Days before it stop working, it was getting slower and sometimes it hangs.

- it's Samsung S2 Portable (640GB).

- I think I bought it from about 1-1.5 years ago.

4) Just break the case open, then you can connect it via SATA, and if that doesn't work it is un-salvageable

Hi, I bought a 2Tb Envisage External USB Hard drive in February 2011 and it has been working fine until this week. It has suddenly stopped appearing in 'My Computer' so that I cant access the Contents.

Go to Disk Management by right clicking Computer in the start-up list then select Manage then disk management. You should be able to work out which is the usb drive. Right click it and select 'change drive letter and paths....' I suggest you select a letter at the end, or near, of the alphabet.

Hi, sorry if this has been posted before, but I searched so many threads and none of them seem to apply to my exact situation (they all have the usb showing somewhere).

My usb/external hard drive, isn't showing up anywhere. Not in my computer, disk management, device manager or by doing cmb > DISKPART> LIST DISK. The laptop does make a sound when i plug in the drive however but the autoplay doesnt come up, nor can I find it anywhere. I've also tried switching everything off, tried different ports, checked youtube videos, followed lots of different instructions from so many threads, but nothing is seeming to work.

The problem began when I ran a system restore this morning, I then noticed the usb problem and cancelled the restore (to set it back to before the restore was done) but this didn't work. The problem is also the same with the dvd drive. On device manager both the dvd drive 'link' and a usb 'link' both have yellow exclamation marks next to them. Please can someone help me, I would be so unbelievably appreciative and grateful. I have been searching for hours, trying loads of different things but I just can't figure this out. Thanks so much!!

I own two Western Digital hard drives which I store all my important data on. One is a WD MyBook 1TB and the other is a WD Passport 500gb. I use these drives in conjunction with a WDTV Live unit to watch and listen to my media.

I keep having errors with Windows 7 and the permissions and recognization of these two drives. I thought I had figured this out before but forgot how to fix it and I am asking for help.

My 1tb drive shows as a BLANK drive and I know that it is full. It shows as an active drive in disk management and I've renamed it to different drive letter. It is recognizing the drive but not the data on the drive.

I believe I read before that it has something to do with windows 7 and the WDTV live changing the permissions and remapping the drive.

I spent the last few hours trying to figure this out. HOping someone on here could help me out.

When i plug it in, it recognises, it shows up in my computer, but when i double click the icon, it tells me "please insert a disk into drive w:" and it won't let me access the drive.

I have tried restarting computer, safely removing and re-inserting the drive, and changing the disk letter via the computer management tools.

Is there anything else i can do?

I'm currently using a Samsung NP-QX410, and I'm trying to install an external hard drive onto the laptop so that I can backup the data.

The hard drive is a Western Digital Scorpio 750GB
The hard drive enclosure is a Vantec NexStar TX 2.5-Inch SATA (I know it's cheap. That might very well be the problem).

When I plugged in the hard drive into the USB ports (I've tried all of them), the light on the enclosure lights up and I can hear the hard drive spinning. When I look around, I can't find any signs from my laptop that a hard drive has been plugged in (or that anything at all has been plugged in for that matter). After some digging I found out it's suppose to appear in the Disk Management page, then create a partition and do a few other things with it.

My disk Management shows no signs of the hard drive though. All it shows is Disk 0 (the basic disk) and CD-ROM (for DVD's).

To me the problem just looks like I just bought a cheap enclosure, but I'd rather ask to make sure there isn't an obvious step I skipped. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate some help.

Thanks.

Hello, sorry if this potentially is in the wrong section. New to this website.

But I come here asking for some suggestions or a step by step process on getting my external hard drive working on my pc again.
It was working before, but I decided to plug it into my xbox one console usb port in order to download a game and play which it configured the external hard drive. When I attempted to plug it into my laptop usb port it no longer showed up under devices with
removable storage. I did a little bit of research and found my way to device managers to see if the computer even recognized the usb. Turns out it does recognized it but for some reason it would not show up on the laptop. So as of right now I cannot access
the files inside of it at all. The light is always on and I can hear the fan run inside the external hard drive, also it still works with my xbox one to play the games I downloaded in it so I know it still works. I am lead to believe that when the xbox one
configured it, it changed the settings so now it isn't compatible with my laptop.

Is there anyway to reset the settings on it or re-configure it so I may have access to the files on my external hard drive through my laptop? Thank you for reading!

I am having a strange problem with my external hard drive for my backups. When I plug the drive in, it does not show up in Windows Explorer. I can make it show up by going into disk management and assigning it a drive letter, but the next time I plug it in, I have the same problem again. Any ideas why this might be occurring?
Edit: Turns out this is not limited to my backup drive. Once I assign a letter, the drives work fine. They will even keep the letter if I eject them and re-insert the USB connection, but any external media I plug in fails to assign a drive letter automatically the first time it is plugged in. While I do not see this as a huge problem, it bothers me that Windows is not working as it used to nor as it should.

Edit2: After reading some of the related forums, I realize I should be clear about a couple things. I am having this problem with drives that have already had their drivers installed in Windows. I do not get a dialog saying that Windows is installing these devices because the devices have already been installed. For some reason, their volume letter has been forgotten by Windows and I have to re-assign it. I am being careful not to use the same letter more than once. I am plugging the drives in while Windows is already running.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so that Windows will automatically assign a drive letter to a device instead of me having to manually do it when Windows forgets what letter it had assigned.

Answer:External hard drive not showing up in Windows Explorer

Windows 7 x64 Quit Assigning Drive Letters Automatically helped me solve my problem. Ran an Elevated Command Prompt and typed the following commands.mountvol.exe /n
mountvol.exe /eGuess it just needed to be reset by disabling auto mounting and re-enabling it.

Please could someone help. I have managed to plug in my old hard drive to try a retrieve data from it. The hard drive is showing up as E recovery but I do not know how to transfer the data over that I want to keep. The laptop is asking to format the drive but if I do this the data will be wiped.
Thanks

Answer:external enclosure hard drive showing as E recovery

If you access Disk Management, what does it say about the drive. How many partitions does it show and is one of them shown as RAW or unallocatted?

I have a 120gb external HDD, I've connected it to my laptop and it has been used before but it is not showing up in My Computer. It is recognised by the computer and installs correctly and is visible on device manager and disk management, I've tried reformatting and this doesn't come up where it is supposed to. Is there a problem with the HDD or my computer? or is it something ridiculously simple. I'm running 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate. Any help would be brilliant

Welcome BmBranch

In Disk Management, does it show that it has been assigned a drive letter. Can you right click on it & open it, & browse the HD to see what is on it ?

Hi all,
I am at my wits end.
I stupidly relied on my Western Digital external to back up all my photography, and today its not showing in My Computer.

When I go to 'manage drives' it shows but is unassigned and when I right click there is no option to assign a letter to the drive. I should point out it does show in device manager.

I tried unplugging it, putting it in a different USB port and also tried it on my lap top and its not showing.

After reading a couple of suggestions I tried a programme called Partition Find and Mount, I didnt know what I was doing but it found the drive and asked me to mount it. I changed the drive letter and after a while it showed the contents in Windows Explorer, which leads me to believe that my stuff is recoverable (I pray).

Can anyone tell me how to get my drive to be recognised again?

Please!!
Thanks,
Al

Hey everyone,
I just purchased a new external hard drive for my laptop. I have a Sony vaio, and the hard drive I bought is a Micronet Platinum XL 500gb. I turned it on and it didn't show up in My computer so I went into the disk management and noticed it was not activated. I activated it and then still nothing.

That was obvious because the drive had not been formatted. So I clicked create new partition and started formatting it. All was fine, it was late so I went to bed, got up in the morning to see how it completed and it said that the format was NOT successful. Now it won't show up in My Computer, nor will it show up in Disk Management. Should I just create a WIN98 bootdisk and format it from DOS, or is there something else I can do?

THANKS!

Answer:External hard drive not showing up in Disk Management

If it won't show up, I don't see how you can format it in DOS.

Anyway, check out Device Manager and tell us more.

Other suggestions:

1. Test your drive on another pc
2. Check your bios settings

good luck

"I hear a weird intermittent constant "Sound" and it's NOT loud, MAYBE It's a "Clicking" sound, But I'm not sure."

Maybe a soft click or a sliding sound? The drive should normally do nothing more than hum.

"I connected it to another PC, it didn't work there too."

Dang it didn't past the test here either. When things go wrong in my computers I often try them in another machine. If it works in the second machine then I know it's still working. If it doesn't work in the second machine then I usually consider the device dead. I'd try a third machine if you have that resource.

If the data are that important I'd consult a data recovery specialist.

We just got a new HP Pavillion Slimline desktop and attached our old Seagate external hard drive. The Seagate shows up as a device, but not as a drive. We cannot retrieve any of our information off it, and this is a BIG problem. Can someone please help??

Answer:Seagate External Hard Drive Not Showing As A Driver on New PC

Welcome to TSG:
Those HP Pavillion Slimline's are nice.
Have you tried going into safe mode and see if you can highlight it and select properties?
If you can - check the "Security" tab and see if you need to take ownership of the drive.
Are you using XP - Vista - or 7 ?

http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/windows-7-quick-way-to-take-ownership-of-filefolder/

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...ourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=seagate+disk+wizard

That Seagate Disk Wizard never worked for me - my friend here at TSG "Phantom" gave me some good tips about "Taking ownership of a drive in XP" that solved my problems - which are very similar to yours.

Hope this helps - and don't worry this is a great site and if none of the above help - I'm sure a member smarter than me will put the fix in for you.

Hi Jumanji,

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

Could you please help me to get the issue resolved or recover the data at least.

Many thanks !!

Answer:EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE NOT SHOWING IN DISK MANAGEMENT

I assume that if you start without the 1TB HD that everything works normally.

If this is true, when you connect the 1TB HD, do you get any indication that you have added new hardware? You should.

Is your connection to the 1TB HD via USB?

Never mind. One of your images shows that the Seagate is recognized. From that, I conclude that the USB interface is good

I am using a desktop PC running Windows Vista.I generally store very little information on my internal hard drive and therefore usually use one of several external hard drives. Currently, one of my hard drives is giving me an annoying issue. Whenever I plug it into the USB adaptor, the computer will recognize it and it works correctly. However, if I disconnect it, and then come back later and connect it again, the computer will only recognize the virtual CD and not the actual drive. Meaning, it does not show the drive letter under "My Computer" or disk management. It only shows the virtual CD.  I can fix this by completely rebooting my computer, but this is pretty frustrating. All of my other hard drives work and I can connect and disconnect them freely without this problem. This only occurs with one specific external drive.1> Plug in, works fine, recognizes drive and virtual CD.2> Unplug, come back and plug back in, only Virtual CD shows.3> No drive under "My computer" or Disk Management, only the virtual CD (which I don't use).4> Other external drives do not give me this issue. Also, this Ext. ED is a black WD portal type. It runs off USB power. My other hard drives are the same type and work fine.Any help would be appreciated. I will be unavailable to reply for approx. 45-50minutes after posting this, but will get back soon after.Thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Showing Up after Disconnect/Reconnect

IMHO its not the fault of the external HDD...it's the virtual drive software...What app is it that created it ?Check their Docs for troubleshooting issues.Meanwhile re-boot and get the external fully recognised. From Disk Management give the external HDD a Volume Label...Then rite clik it and assign it a drive letter at least 2 letters away from the virtual drive.Save changes exit and re-boot and you should be good to go...

I have a 1.5TB external hard drive connected to my computer running Windows 7 via USB. It is on and connected when I start my computer, however, it does not show up in Explorer and is not accessible. So I power it off. I know the computer "sees" it in some sense because I hear the windows disconnect sound when I turn it off. I wait a few seconds and then turn it on, and now it shows up and works. This only happens with 1 of my external drives and not with the other 5 I have on my computer. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks!

first off, let me apologize for the length of this post, but i am a desperate woman!

i have an external drive (WD my book) that was giving me problems (i/o error and periodically telling me i had to format it to be able to use it). I was always able to get around the problem by disconnecting and reconnecting the drive. However, I knew it was about to kick the bucket, so I bought a replacement external HD, but before I could transfer the data over, the WD stopped showing up in my computer completely. i am at a total loss as to what to do now. this drive has pictures, music, videos of my god daughter, ebooks, my clients website files...... i am pulling my hair out!

a little more background info:
i can hear the hard drive spinning, it isn't clicking or beeping or anything. it sounds like it always did.

the hard drive was giving me problems, as i mentioned above, but the problems started in earnest when i upgraded from xp to windows 7.

when i installed the new drive, and booted up my computer again, the new drive booted up faster than the old one (especially given the issues it was having), and got assigned as drive G, which was the letter the old drive used to have. that was the point at which the old drive stopped being recognized at all.

I can see it in device manager, disk management and it is listed when i click on safely remove hardware.

disk management shows it as a physical drive, but not listed in the logical drive section. it says it... Read more

Hi

One software I had luck with recovering files from a failing drive was iCare Data Recovery. I believe it's free to try and see if there are recoverable files. It's paid software if you end up using the recovery feature, though.

Link: http://www.icare-recovery.com/

Also, it's VERY IMPORTANT that you do not write data to the failing drive. Writing to it will only damage it further. This means don't try any chkdsk, defrag, etc. programs on it.

The Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive I'm using is from my old laptop it has 4 disks.
After I put it in the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclosure, and connect it to my new laptop it does not show up in 'My Cumputer' and 'Disk Management', but displays in the 'device and printer' section of control pannel.
I also can't eject the hard drive, even when I'm not doing anything to it, the (IT-CEO IT-700) enclusre's blue signal light just keeps flashing for a while then goes off for a sec, then resume flashing again.
My laptop also keeps trying to install the hard drive.

I tried reinstall the hard drive's driver, but that did not solve the problem.

Please Help.

Hello,
I have a Seagate 500GB Free Agent Desktop USB ST305004FDA1E1-RK, P/N 9NF2AL-570 that I was using to store my Acronis true image backups on of an older desktop pc. I had been having issues that the older desktop pc and wound up just doing a clean install and I was going to use my image backup from a few months ago to restore the pc to that time (only because I forgot about my image backup before doing the clean install).

I plugged the Seagate Free Agent External Hard Drive it into that pc the other day to restore it to one of those backups; it was recognized by the pc so I put the rescue / boot disc into the cd drive and restarted the pc. On restart It did show the screen for starting true image and then another screen popped up and vanished just as quickly and Windows XP Pro started instead. So I tried 3 more times with the same results. I then created another bootable rescue media disc and tried to load the TrueImage program but it again showed the True Image screen and then booted to Windows XP instead. It was late by then so I just shut down the computer and turned everything off and thought that I would try again the next day.

The following afternoon when I turned the computer on the Seagate is no longer being recognized by the computer. I tried plugging it into my laptop with the same results. It is listed in device manager and if I go to My Computer and right click for manage and click on disk management it is being shown but as unallocated space now.... Read more

I have a Windows 10 laptop with a couple external hard drives connected to it. I disconnect the hard drive and put it to sleep and take it to work. After coming home I reconnect them. I can hear the sound effects of connecting and disconnecting, but they never show up in my computer, not even in disk management.

I can see them in device manager. Universal Serial Bus controllers -> USB mass storage device, with a yellow exclamation mark. I checked and the error message is :

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

This can be fixed by restarting the computer and I googled for a solution to no avail. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.

So if anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me so I don't have to restart computer all the time, thank you.

My 320 GB Seagate external hard drive is detected but not showing up in my computer. What should I do?

In cmd> diskpart> list volume it does not show up. (screenshot attached)

In Device Manager it gets detected. (screenshot attached)

In disk management it shows up as 'unallocated'. If I initialize it, will I lose all data on the drive? It had 4 partitions. (screenshot attached)

In My Computer also it does not show up. (screenshot attached)
Even BIOS recognizes it.

What to do? I don't want to lose any data on the drive. If I initialize it in device manager will I lose data?

I was installing window XP on my computer, usually I remove the external drive but this time I did not. The external drive was shown as 4 drives in partition manager during installation. But the installation failed. The next time I was installing windows again, the external drive was shown as 1 single unknown or unrecognized drive. I'm not sure if it was unknown or unrecognized. I'm sure I didn't format it. So what I need to do now? I don't want to lose any data.

Answer:Seagate external hard drive not showing up in my computer. It is detected.

Yes, if you initialize it you will 'lose' everything. You will want to try something like [email protected] Recovery or maybe Easeus Partition Recovery.

Have a external hard drive that was backed up on a macbook pro
using time machine. I try to take the files out that I put on a windows 7 PC
and it wont show up in My Computer.
But it does on device manager.
is there a problem with the external hardrive?

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive not showing up on Windows?

It is likely formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), HFS+. Windows can't natively read that.

"I try to take the files out that I put on a windows 7 PC" is a confusing statement. If you want to read the files on the drive from 7, you can't without a 3rd party tool. If you are just wanting to put stuff on there from the PC and don't care about the Mac backup, then just format the drive. Do that through Disk Management in the Admin Tools control panel.

You could try enabling automount and rebooting, which will bring this volume online and keep it online through subsequent reboots. Enabling automount can be done by opening a Command Prompt window and invoking DISKPART -> automount enable -> exit

Hello!

I work on a laptop and a desktop. I use an external 320 GB hard disk to save my files.
The laptop is running windows 7 home basic 64 bit (more than 2 years old) and The desktop is running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit (recently installed with formatting new pc).
The problem is..
If the HDD connected to the desktop and I delete any file from the HDD, the file appears in the recycle bin of the desktop but as I connect the HDD in laptop the files are not appear under recycle bin of the laptop. Likewise any file deleted from HDD appears in recycle bin of the laptop when the HDD connected to the laptop but not appears in the recycle bin when connected to the desktop.
Is it normal? I do not think so. If it is a problem then how can I correct it. I have tried windows troubleshooting -- performance check , HDD error check but no error can be find out in both computers.

Wish for your helpful suggestions.

Answer:Recycle bin not showing deleted files for an external hard drive

I think this is quite normal if I have read your post correctly. When you delete a file from your external HD the deleted file get transferred to the Recycle Bin of the computer you are using. When you change the external HD to your laptop then there is no record of those files as they have already been deleted & would still be the Recycle Bin of desktop, unless you have deleted them from there.

Hard drive is: WD My Book Essential 2 TB

It was working fine the other day then I updated my computer. I looked and noticed there was an update titled: Western Digital Technologies - Other hardware - WD SES Device, released April, 2015. I don't know if it's the same as the external or what.

I did try uninstalling this but could not find it in the installed updates. I installed it 6/7/15 and before this it worked fine, now when plugged in, it shows up as CD Drive and when I double click it, it says application not found.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
