No Preview thumbnails in photo folder

Question: No Preview thumbnails in photo folder

Hi:
I have Windows XP Pro. About a week ago I received 2 Microsoft automatic updates. It was about Net frame SP1 and I also installed Internet Explorer 8. Yesterday I went to my Photos folder and all the Jpeg image files with the picture preview thumbnails used to identify the photos have all been replaced with the jpeg file type magnifying glass icon. Others have the Bitmap image type icon. I can no longer identify my photos with the thumbnails. Furthermore, when I open any of the current magnifying glass thumbnail, the photo appears in Internet Explorer. I don't like that. Before this, it used to open in Windows (I think). I opened another magnifying glass thumbnail and it looked like a bar code all scribbly. How do I get my Jpeg and Bitmap images back to the preview thumbnails like it used to be before I installed the updates? Or maybe it was something else that changed the settings? I tried to do a System Restore only to be disappointed by System Restore having been turned off with no restore date to choose.

Preferred Solution: No Preview thumbnails in photo folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I need your help. Please guide me through this trouble. I searched the web but I could not find anything useful.

I need to have folder content preview disabled on my machine but I still need to have pictures as thumbnails instead of icons. What do I need to do?

Please note checking "Always show Icons, never thumbnails" wont help because it applies to Picture Files as well.

Thank you in advance!

I keep hearing (MS?) people saying that if you move to win7 your only option to deal with any gripes you might have with it s way of doing things, is to just cope with them.

Well now, aint that some way to spoil your customers!

Heres what.

I ve got folders with images and I do a lot of sorting and moving around and when I used XP I could see little fancy tumbnail previews of the images inside the folder, ON the folder icon.

Windows 7 does this too but in an inept, I-need-to-be-different-for-differents-sake kinda way.

Now, why the heck would MS want to go changin stuff around that aint needin no changin around I wonder.

Then I wonder if theres somewhere I can change this around to a practical setting but soon realize theres no such setting anywhere.

... hence I ve arrived here.

Is there a hack/tool/whatever around someplace that will let me fix Windows Explorer tomake it useful to me once again?

What's wrong with the way Windows 7 folders display their pictures?

I've actually found that it works pretty well when I have my thumbnails set somewhere between "Large Icons" and "Extra Large Icons":

Hello! All my mp4 and wmv video icons on my desktop and folders suddenly changed from convenient photo thumbnails to generic mp4 and wmv icons. The photos enable me to identify the vids, especially if there are no captions for them.

How do I get the photo icons back? I considered system restore, but my restore points don't go back far enough.

Using Windows 7. Thanks for your assistance!

Some .psd files show image thumbnail and image preview in Windows Explorer (Win7 64-bit); other .psd files show icon thumbnail and no preview. Even within the same folder! What's up? I believe they used to all show images for both.

Please note that I have already done all that is necessary to get image thumbnails and previews, as most of my psd files show both! So please do not recommend apps and codecs which enable this..:-)... Something I have done inadvertantly with my Windows must now be registering something that was saved within the individual files (?)......I want to find out how two files which are both psd files can differ. Note that in both case (both types), the Thumbnail check box in the SaveAs dialogue window is checked and grayed out.

Thanks for any ideas!

Answer:Preview and Thumbnails

Hi Janet. You may try deleting thumbnail cache. After deleting thumbnail cache, if needed, refresh the folder, it is expected that the thumbnail previews will be back.

On taskbar preview thumbnails, usually you get to see the content inside the window. Sometimes, however, and I'm unsure of the situation that causes it, the thumbnail will not be there, but you end up with just a blank box with the program's icon inside. The way to fix this is to make active that particular window, and then the thumbnail will refresh itself. Is this normal behavior?

Thanks,

Hello,

If you look at the attached picture, you see how a folder with pictures looks like when I open it. A few random thumbnails get loaded, but mostly they don?t.

I have tried running disk cleanup and deleted my thumbnail cache but it didn?t help. A few months ago I did however follow a guide which was supposed to stop windows from clearing the thumbnail cache automatically, so that one didn?t have to wait so long when opening a folder with lots of pictures. Could this be what is messing with the thumbs? I can?t remember what the guide made me change though.

Thanks for answers.

Found the solution myself. For future reference:

I recently intalled NITRO pdf to my pc & I could no longer preview PDF thumbnails in my computer account. So I unintalled it but thr pdf files still says its "NITROpdf created". I also tried installing new Acrobat Reader but still the same. It previews when pc is open in another account. I don't know what the problem is & how to fix it because I even used the registry fixing tool for thumbnails preview but didn't work. HELP!

Answer:cannot preview PDF thumbnails in win explorer

Maria_thea, I'm not familiar with NITRO so this's just a SWAG. My guess is that when installed, it changed a setting (View, Associations, etc.)? Either reinstall it and see if it has an uninstaller you can run that knows where all the bodies are buried and can put things back (sorta doubt it) or look at the settings and change them back manually (most likely IMHO). Lots of apps are narcissistic and like to use only themselves.HTHEd in Texas

I'm a photographer who occasionally creates very large files for printing onto canvas. I recently sized and saved a TIF file in Photoshop CS2 for a 32" X 22" canvas print; it looks fine in Photoshop, I can open it in Photoshop after saving, but the thumbnail preview generated by Vista can't display the image..just a gray rectangle with a black bar on one side. The file is big..over 550 mb..is there a file size limit / threshold in vista for how big the original file can be when generating the thumbnail? Or maybe the thumbnail generated is too large and can't be displayed?

Probably. I remember XP having a specific size (dimension-wise, I believe) after which it wouldn't generate a thumbnail for the image.

two questions.

1. Is there anyway to make the previews/aero peek work as intended?

This happens to me daily and is very annoying, it makes all the preview functions of aero useless. This usually happens after playing a full screen game or after computer goes to sleep etc.. I have already ticked "save taskbar thumbnail previews"

2. I doubt this is possible, but is there anyway to make the previews live when app is minimized?

Answer:not saving preview thumbnails

A user at our company receives many .eps files. She would like to be able to view them as thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Right now, they only show up as the .eps icon and there is no preview when she looks at pictures in thumbnail view. User does have Adobe Photoshop CS installed so this is not the problem.

Is there a setting or a tweak that needs to be done to Windows XP to enable this ability?

Answer:How to preview .eps files as thumbnails?

For anyone who may encounter this problem in the future, technically, according to Adobe, there is no solution: In previous versions of Adobe Photoshop, a .dll called psicon.dll was installed to allow Adobe files to have functionality with browsing in Windows. With Adobe CS, this was discontinued. If a person upgraded to CS from an older version of Adobe, they will be able to browse as normal; a fresh install will not.

However, there is a work-around, but there is the risk of losing files in doing so, so it should only be attempted at your own risk.

Attached to this posting in a .zip file of the .dll that needs to be registered in the C:/Program Files/Adobe/Shell directory.

I did not try to apply this fix because my user could not afford to lose files, so I do not know how well it works.

Try right clicking in an open space and expand the "View" option, if it shows thumbnails in there click on it and you will hopefully achieve the result you want.

I have window 10 home.

I'm in the directory on my hard disk c:\
I can see maybe 2-3 thumbnails preview the rest are icons and i have like 400 items most of them thumbnails/images of some types: png jpg bmp.

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

I have Windows 2000 pro. I use Vueprint pro as my default viewer for pictures. I have had this same setup on my previous computer and believe there my be a setting or something wrong because none of my thumbnails will preview as before when you are viewing a folder as thumbnails.
My other 2000 computers do not have this problem. only my new toshiba laptop is the oddball.

Also, the pictures no longer display to the left when I have the folder set as a webpage to preveiw in the left column.

Any Ideas? I have already uninstalled vueprint and have change associations several times to imaging or microsoft photo. None of these have helped. I prefer to use vueprint and am not really sure this is due to a program since it affects all folder previewing.

When I tried to back up my "My Pictures" directory on my Dell Dimension 3000 Win XP Pro machine, all of the create dates on the jpgs changed to the current date, thumbnails disappeared, no preview in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and jpg files will not open in Photoeditor or Paint. When I tried to copy, I tried to click and drag the entire "My Pictures" directory. I was prompted that some information may be lost, but I clicked yes to proceed. All of the jpg files still are listed in the directory with their original name and files sizes intact. The only change is the create date and the inability to view or open the files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:jpgs won't open, no thumbnails and no preview

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fix.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fix.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.

Okay, this is a question that I have since Vista and have never found much on the matter. I've see it on every Vista/7 machine I've ever seen so it much be normal.

So I think everyone knows the problem. The task bar live preview thumbnail will turn gray with an icon in the middle in an application hasn't received focus for a while. Once the application receives focus the live preview is refreshed and is a live preview once again. As though there is some limited graphics resource that tracks all of the previews or something, just my layman's attempt to describe what I think is going on.

So my question is is there some configuration or something that can be used to give the live previews more resources fix or alleviate this issue or am I just making shit up?

Thanks!

- Preview-Thumbnails in YouTube’s progress bar Disappeared !!!

Hi,
well, this small "tooltip" preview-video-frame which pops-up while hovering the mouse over a point in youtube's video progress bar,
(which helps to quickly navigate to a desired position on video storyline), suddenly, DISAPPEARED!
In fact, didn't disappeared at all, but it shows as a small BLACK rectangle frame. No preview!
I can't think of anything I did to might have caused that. :\
(May be the recent update of flashplayer for Mozilla FF).
Is there some remedy/solution to it?
Thanks a lot.

In the Control Panel > Performance Information > Performance Options > Visual effects, evidently you have to have "desktop composition" (Aero) enabled for this. So if you have Vista Basic -- this will not be an option at all.

Hi there. At the beginning I have to say I know option "always show icons, never thumbnails" in folder options but it's not what I want to use because it doesn't solve my problem.

When I was using Windows 7 there was a tool which helps to disable preview of video files. Is it possible to do same in Windows 8? It's very annoying when icons view is set to average and preview is on. I'd like to disable preview of video files permanently. Is it possbile? In every size of icon I want default icon for this extension. In Windows 7 there was no problem to handle with this.

Hello guys,

Sometimes somehow it does stay on, while I'm doing other things and my mouse isn't over it, so I'm wondering - maybe there is a way to make a live preview of thumbnails always on intentionally?

Answer:Live taskbar thumbnails preview when my mouse isn't over it

I have seen this behaviour sometimes when the system is working hard and CPU is at 100%. The preview pop-up stays on for quite a while after the mouse has moved on. I think it is normal and just reflects that there are many background tasks going on that delay the screen update process. I'm not aware of anyway to make them stay on.

My question is whether or not reinstalling Windows ME will solve my pictures problem, and will such a download of Windows ME include the Kodak program, Paint, and Image Preview associated with Windows ME???
BACKGROUND -- I recently did a few things that brought about a problem. I used Ultra WinCleaner 2002 which deleted many Registry entries, etc., and messed up McAfee Security which had to be reinstalled. I downloaded a PSP program but didn't complete the installation (the program was an upgrade to PSP 7.0, but I didn't have a PSP Program). After these two operations, I found that when I tried with pictures to SAVE AS .bmp the saved file was in an unknown format... thumnails and ImagePreview did not work. File Properties said the files were JPG , but the format was unknown to ImagePreview. Thinking the Kodak program that comes with Windows ME was messed up, I downloaded an Image Viewer called IrfanView and set extensions for all images to use IrfanView. IrfanView worked well , but the SAVE AS problem still existed. I cleared all the extentions from IrfanView and deleted IrfanView. Now the problem is worse and none of my pictures will open in ImagePreview at all, and I virtually can not save any pictures. Is reinstalling Windows ME a good solution and will it not delete documents, pictures, and applications?

Hello everyone.

I'm having some problems with my computer and I was hoping someone would be able to help me out :<

I have folders on my computer which I store lots of images in for artwork resources.

I don't know why it happens, perhaps after I add a new image to the folder or change an existing image and save it, The folder sort of freezes/crashes, I cant click on any of the thumbnails, I cant close the folder, go to File or anything like that, Highlight anything drag nothing.

All it lets me do is minimise, maximise and scroll up and down. It wont even highlight the images/thumbnails when I click on them. I can still get into the files if I open them when I'm already in say photo shop, but I cant open them when I'm in the folder.

In the past I've had to go via Photo shop and re-save all the files from the crashed folder into a new one just so I can actually use the folders normally.

I mean it wont even let me close the folder T_T; it just crashes worse and worse every time I try and do anything until the screen freezes and then I have to re-start my computer.

Re-starting the computer and system restores do nothing the folders stay locked down. I'm actually really upset, as I lost everything from my last computer and it had photos of my mother on the hardrive, my mother has since passed away and they where all I had left. I have a few left on this new computer but I'm so afraid of loosing these last few I have.

Hi. All thumbnails for pics on windows folders have recently disappeared. I have double checked all folder and performance settings and tried repairing Windows photo gallery, deleting thumbnails cache, restoring pc to previous state, changing file associations etc etc. No joy.

When I open the pictures folder, thumbnails appear briefly and then quickly revert to icons. "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is definitely unchecked.

I have successfully installed another picture browser which works fine when I work through it directly, unfortunately I still need thumbnails on the standard windows folders for selecting & uploading pics online, which is an important part of my business.

Anyone any suggestions? I have already tried all the suggestions for similar problems I have found on the forums but nothing so far has made any difference.

I have a strange issue that is hindering my work since I am a web developer that works from home and this is occurring on my production machine. The issue just started tonight after I downloaded some pictures from an email a client sent to me. Every time a picture is placed on the desktop explorer crashes in 5-10 second intervals. It doesn't matter what image it is. The same thing occurs inside of safe mode. I had to open up task manager launch command prompt and delete the picture I placed on my desktop in the command line in order to make the computer usable again. I have encountered this problem just a few days ago and cannot find a single solution anywhere online...

On BOTH my PC hard drive (windows vista) and my external hard drive in which i use to store extra photos...the photo thumbnails will load and then within a few seconds, will disappear and the icons will be the default photo icon (blue landscape, or whatever it is)...

Why on earth does this happen? I cleared up some extra room on my PC hard drive, which solved the problem for about 12 hours, then it started happening again...i also plugged in my external today to store some more pics, and noticed that it is happening on there too!!

Win 7 Compatibility system indicates that PSP Photo X3 is needed for use on a 64 bit version of Win 7. My copy of X2 works perfectly well except that, when using Print Layout to set up a page for printing, the thumbnails of photos I import show only as black-filled rectangles. Since this appears to be the only problem, I am loath to spend money on a replacement programme. Does anyone know a way around it, please?

I have Ult 64 bit and PSP X2. Print layout iworks fine. The image is a .jpg and was open before I went to print layout. I tried opening the same .jpg with print layout open and again it worked fine. This is probably useless info but it will open the files either way.

Question: Folder Thumbnails

Hi Guys,

Today I decided to spruce up the folders on my MP3 player by adding the CD covers as the thumbnail for each folder. All went well until..... disaster!!! Somehow any folder on my whole PC (not just the MP3 player) that does not have a thumbnail manually assigned to it(or assigned by it's parent program) has now got a Green Day "Bullet In The Bible" CD Cover as the Thumbnail

I'm presuming I've pressed something that has made this the default folder setting but don't want it this way. Basically unless I just want a folder icon unless a Thumbnail has been deliberatley assigned.

Anyway I can do this en masse? Or do I have to go through them all?

Thanx in advance

Answer:Folder Thumbnails

You could try to rebuild the icon cache with Windows TweakUI. If you don't have it you can download it here
Go to Repair and select 'Rebuild Icons'. Restart your computer.

Question: Folder Thumbnails

Hey all,

Does anybody know why the thumbnail preview on folders just seems to pick a file at random? I have renamed my files (album pictures) Front 1.jpg, Label 1.jpg, Reverse 1.jpg, Front 2.jpg, Label 2.jpg, Reverse 2.jpg, and yet it just seems to display files randomly in the preview. I would like it to show; Front 1, Label 1, Reverse 1. As i said, it appears to be random, some folders do it in that order, some don't.

Also, if i customize the folder, picking a picture i want shown, that doesn't appear to work either.

Thanks in advance people.

Answer:Folder Thumbnails

If you pick a picture you want to show you have to name it folder and it has to be (?) a jpg file. You then only get the one image showing in the thumbnail (usually the album cover, but it could be your cat if you want!).
As to the randomness of the thumbnail view, I think the thumbnail shows the last couple of files/pictures that are placed in the folder. When you clear the thumbnail cache, well, windows makes up its own mind.

Hello to all!

It's very nice seeing such a live and active community and I'm very excited with becoming a member!

I came here looking a solution to my problem, to say the truth...
Last month I installed IconPackager 4.0.0 without ever thinking that it had no support for Windows 7.

After a lot of searching, (not a whole month) I found out that upon "restore default icons" IconPackager cannot restore the default Icons Windows 7 has.

I found this post at Stardock/Iconpackager support forum IconPackager messed windows 7 icons? Get fix here! (Modz please pin) Forum Post by Voodooguy
And said "hey, another one had this problem and fixed it!". I copied the registry values, made a .reg file, inserted the code and restarted.

After the restart, most of the files where back to normal except:
Microsoft Word 2007 Documents
and,
Windows Folder Thumbnails (the open folders that show the content of a folder)

The Windows folder thumbnails, appeared, but not properly showing the data in the middle of the open content folder, but below of the folder, and the old icon (that has been assigned with IconPackager) showing also below the wrong folder, and content.

I have attached the two (2) pictures, one for each occasion.
So for the Microsoft Word -> Assign the default Word Icon
and for the folders - > Get rid of the grey icon (the one on the very back) and assign the proper "open content folder" to show the content of every folder properly.

In one of the folders on my computer I have lots of sub-folders (more than 100) and the view setting for that folder is "Extra Large Icons". Each of those folders has a designated thumbnail: So in each folder I have an image with the title 'Folder'. All the thumbnails were displaying correctly for months up until today where I created a new folder and deleted a different folder that was no longer desired. Now I'm sitting with folders that are displaying the incorrect thumbnails despite the fact they each have a designated 'Folder' titled image inside. A few of them are jumbled up and it's driving me crazy.

- I tried to do an icon cache rebuild using the Disk Cleanup tool and selecting only Thumbnails.
- I even manually deleted the iconcache.db file and restarted the computer.

Neither of those have helped.
Can someone please help me?

Edited to add:

- I've also tried changing the view options in the folder to list. After that I did an icon cache rebuild. After that I restarted. When I went back in I set the view to Extra Large Icons again and I still have the same problem.

After some searching around in the forums, I understand there are a lot of problems with folder thumbnails in Windows 7.

My problems seems simple enough. I have a bunch of folders, each filled with many photos. I wanted the folders to display a thumbnail of a specific picture so I can tell whats inside immediately when I see the folders. So I right click on each folder, select properties, click on the customize tab, choose a file and hit ok. Viola, the folder now displays the correct image I want on its thumbnail.

The problem is they never seem to want to stay that way. Eventually they all revert back to the default folder thumbnails, two random pictures from inside the folder. And with so many folders I find it annoying to change them all back again and again. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out the reason they all change back, and how I could make them stay the same. Maybe it has something to do with the thumbcache or iconcache? I'm not too sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long ass post. Thanks.

I can't seem to remove the album art associated with my MP3 folder thumbnail on Windows explorer.

What I've tried:
1. Right click on the folder > Properties > Customize > Folder pictures > Restore Default (Thumbnail still shows the album art)
2. Tools > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders (No hidden image files)
3. Conducted a *.gif, *.jpg, *.jpeg search on my whole system (Didn't see the particular image)
4. Transferred all MP3s of the artist to another drive, refreshed (Still there)

I came across deleting individual jpegs of album art before, I just can't remember where. I think it was in WMP or something. Is there some hidden folder I should check?

Thanks in advance guys.

Answer:Album art and folder thumbnails

Tools > Folder Options > View

Uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files." The album art and other crap will be in the folder where your music is stored. Just be sure to recheck the "Hide Protecte..." box once you are finished so you don't accidentally delete something important.

Answer:Lost folder thumbnails.....

It is possible it was disabled in error, following these instructions will show you how thay can be turned off or on.

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

If you want to speed up browsing around in explorer, you might think about disabling thumbnail previews in folders.

Note that this works in Windows 7 or Vista
To make this change, click the Organize button on any folder, and choose Folder and Search Options from the menu.

Click the View tab, and then check the Always show icons, never thumbnails checkbox.

Click OK, and you’re done.

Since this is technical within my photo program I am hoping someone here can help. I use a great photo program by serif www.serif.com I have used version 7, 9 and upgraded to version 10 of PhotoPlus.

Most plugins that work for photoshop are compatable with Serif's PhotoPlus.
I have Harry's Filters and several popular plugins that have and do work on previous versions of PhotoPlus.
All plugins, aside from eye candy- the only one supported by serif, are previewing in greyscale/ B&W only, unless I am on the background layer. (see print screens attached showing layer and background)
Harry's Filters, Xero etc. The filter will work but not doing a lot of good seeing as I would have to guess at the outcome and who has time or patience for that?

Earlier versions worked fine. 10x will not. I Have removed and reinslalled plugins and program itself.

Today I installed version 9 in another folder and I confirmed all of my plugins previewed in color.

Since I have both 9 and 10 installed, would it be possible for a programer / tech to read the files and find the problem between the program and the plugins. LIke something is missing???
Apparently version 10 and my pc are the problem since I have not seen anyone else report this to serif support over the past few months. I use the program daily so it really is a bummer not being able to use the tools it is meant to work with. Serif is not being to helpful telling me what they support is their plugins.......

Answer:preview probs inside photo program

I don't think you will find an answer to this here, unless someone familiar with PhotoPlus watches this forum. A random programmer will not be much help.

This appears to be a plugin support bug in PhotoPlus version 10 or an issue with Harrys Filters. I would contact Serif and/or the publisher responsible for Harrys Filters and ask for them help.

Hey there,

I have a problem with the way Win7 displays folders: my whole music collection consists of folders that contain the songs and the covers (sometimes there are more than 2-3 images next to the audio files).
By default, W7 completely messes the folders: I'd like to be able to select the "main" cover for each folder - but Windows won't let me. Instead of that, the display randomly selects 2 or more images for the thumbnail.

This is how I'd like each folder to look:

Instead, I get one like this:

I tried setting the Customize tab exactly like in XP, but - when I select the image - nothing happens. The thumbnail remains the same.

Please help me out - what do I have to do so that I can have all my folders like in the first image?
Thank you in advance for helping out.

Hi C05T1N,

You're not going to believe this.

After you chose the jpg you want, drop a random mp3 you have on to the folder.

It will change to the icon you selected.

Some how it refreshes the icon cache only when you place a new file into the folder.

clearly a bug.

Greetz.
edit. taking a mp3 out does the same thing. it forces a refresh. :-)

New to the forum so I'll write my "Comment" in two ways.

(Skip if you hate emotional back-story)Long Version:
I've used XP for going on years now and switched to Vista about 9 months ago. First thing I had to do was remake all my folder thumbnails. I'm a real lover of pictures, I really am. I usually make a individual folder per artist, put the artist's face as the thumbnail, and stuff as much of their works as I can get my hands on into said folder. In XP this was nice and easy, I had the face take up the whole folder and it was easy to remember each person. With Vista it got annoying as my images were placed at a slant and when they were cached they often got lost and started to migrate to other folder (And when you have a public computer with password protected folders for your non-worksafe artists that migrate to your safe folders and replace thumbnails THIS CAN BECOME A REAL PROBLEM). For Windows 7 though I'm stuck...I really am. Somehow or another my folders now hate me and choose to disobeadiantly choose their own thumbnails, at a slanted angle, with 2 or so images stacked together, change when new images are added, and it has made it really hard to see and remember my folders now. Why was such a wonderful feature eliminated to such an extent that it now feels in the way to have the folder not be represented by a single image?

I have a rather large (seriously large) collection of anime/manga stuff on my computer, what I used to like to do in WinXP was take a cover pic and slap it on the folder icon so that I could recognize files at-a-glance..

Now the thing is, and I had this problem in Windows Vista also, by the time I get to the couple hundredth file thumbnail, Windows 7 starts forgetting the thumbnails that I'd already set and putting random ones back on the files I've already done..

Is there a way to get Windows to 'remember' my custom thumbnails?

Also I tried a trick I found to deny Windows permissions to the thumbnail's database, it didn't work for this problem..

I'm currently downloading a copy of Linux hoping that it's easier to customize/navigate these hundreds of folders. -_-

EDIT: I downloaded "Ubuntu Linux" and I'm tempted to mark this topic "Solved" but I'll leave it open and see if anyone can answer this... I feel like a fool for not trying out Linux sooner, I'm going to use it for all my picture archiving/browsing.

Are you using any "cleaning" programs that supposedly clean your system by removing unneeded files and folders? Even Disk Cleanup will remove those files if you don't onopt it.

Answer:My Picture Folder...blank thumbnails...?

Hi,
Sounds like your folder view is set to tiles. Click on View and then click either filmstrip or thumbnails on the menu that drops down.

Anyone know of a setting/hack/freeware that will alphabetically arrange the folder thumbnails displayed on clickiing the FE icon?

I think they are currently arranged by order of opening. Sometimes I have 15-20 open and quickly locating the one I need can be tricky. Especially if similar names are not fully visible, e.g. USA2016 GPX, USA2016 Photos, etc.

Photo previews of photos within a folder that is being sync'd to my Google Drive are NOT showing previous / next arrows. The same photos within a folder not being sync'd to my Drive show arrows.

Anyone know what the deal is here?

Answer:No arrows in Photo preview ONLY in Google Drive folders

It depends on what program you are using for previewing those files with.

Hi techs,
Is there a way of disabling video thumbnails on folder icons while keeping image thumbnails enabled (at the same time) in Windows 7 ? I tried all options available in folder options but to no avail. The puzzling thing is that my efforts were successful on two folders but doing the same thing for the rest did not work. Whether this result was random, I dont know. What I did for those two folders was to access folder options from the individual folders (i.e. selecting 'Customise this folder' from the 'View' menu drop-down), everything else failed. Any help will be greatly appreciated

it Always Still Old Thumbnails When I Saved New Images. How to Refresh That ?

Answer:Why Folder Thumbnails NOT Update When I Saved New Pictures ?

Hi, I understand the question as
Why doesn't the folder icon change when I save new images to that folder? How do I get that to refresh?

What I note is that the folder icon does refresh automatically if there's a significant change to the folder content. For example, it changes if I put all the images in a folder into a folder within the first folder.

However, the shortcut to that folder isn't necessarily updated at the same time.

The difference can be seen by opening an explorer window to view the folder contents, and another to view the folder icon (e.g. medium). Significant changes to the folder content are quite quickly reflected in the folder icon.

For example, deleting 1 of three images makes no change, deleting 1 of two images makes a change in the icon.

If at the same time you keep a shortcut to the folder visible on the desktop, you will probably see no change in that, even if you rebuild the cache.

Hello.

I had a weird problem with my folder icons. The normal folders (ones without thumbnails) appear the normal yellow photo that is the default. However, the folders with thumbnails are a different icon of gray and white. For some reason, I cannot change the icon of the folders with thumbnails back to the default, yellow folders. Can anyone help with this? I have manually tried to change it back by "Right clicking, Properties, Customize" and choosing the yellow default folder, but it isn't working.

Answer:How do I change back the folder icon with thumbnails?

You can try to rebuild the icon cache in windows.

I have a folder which contains subfolders. The subfolders contain videos. I'd like to see thumbnails of all the videos in the subfolders without having to go into each one. Is there a way to do that?

I inadvertantly semi installed a photo editor prog off the Office Premium disk (i have now uninstalled it) this meant all my JPEG files then wanted the Office CD to open the file.

I have since put the file association back to normal (IE) but now the Thumbnails view is not working for JPEGS in the My Picture folder.
Bitmaps work but in the JPEG boxes I just get the JPEG file icon and not the actual thumbnail,

any ideas?

Answer:W2K stopped showing JPG thumbnails in MY Pictures folder.

Hello. The thumbnails in my music folder don't display correctly for some of my subfolders.

I've Googled this before and I haven't found any useful solutions. It seems most people just clear their thumbnail cache, but that only seems to work on the C: drive. My music folder is on a separate partition.

Anyway, this is the problem .... I have my music folder, and all subfolders, "optimized" for music. In an artist folder, the album folders will usually show the proper album artwork.

However, when I go up a level, the artist folder doesn't show the album thumbnails in it. In this picture, you can see Barenaked Ladies doesn't display properly--- but their neighbor, Band of Horses, displays just fine. It's this inconsistency that really confuses me.

Anyone have any ideas?
