Solved: Loss of Help & Support and System Information

Question: Solved: Loss of Help & Support and System Information

I'm not sure when this problem occurred as these are services that I seldom use but I had reason to do so this morning and found I was unable to launch either service.

Yesterday I performed an upgrade re-installation of XP in an attempt to deal with some boot up and occasional BSOD issues I had been having that had eluded all other repair methods I had tried. I did this in a last ditch attempt to cure the problems before committing to a laborious clean install.

I do not know if the loss of these services pre-dates the re-installation. The boot up issues were resolved by the re-installation. I have had 2 BSOD crashes since the re-installation though whilst I was trying to solve the problem

I have searched for solutions to this problem and have so far:

replaced my index file in C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\OFFLINECACHE
performed a complete rebuild of help center
run Windows File Protection to verify and replace protected files

None of these have solved the issue.

As an aside - I doubt this is relevant - I have also been suffering from an unusual issue with the volume being constantly zeroed (not muted - the slider is set to zero) every time that I reboot. This requires me to reset the system volume to desired levels every time I reboot and is frustrating, but hardly life changing. I have looked through all options on my sound card and in Windows Sound and Audio Devices and can't find a reason as to why this would happen.

I don't think the issue is malware related. I run Avast Professional, Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Preempt, Look n Stop Firewall.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Whilst I await answers I'm going to go through a selective boot procedure and see if I can get the services to work in safe mode.

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Solved: Loss of Help & Support and System Information

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Loss of Help & Support and System Information

I have solved the issue. Shortly after I posted this (using Firefox) I realised that IE7 was also not launching. I uninstalled IE7, then re-installed IE8. This seems to have cured the Help Center issues. All that for a piece of software I almost never use and would rather wasn't on my system!

I still have the irritating volume issue, so I'll re-post that as a separate problem and mark this thread solved. Thanks for reading!

I run WinXP Pro SP2, and when I initiate the following sequence:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information
the Help and Support Center Window comes up.
This also happens with Start -> Run -> msinfo32
Huh?

Does anyone know how to correct this?

Hello!

My help and support, and system information is not working anymore. When I click on those, nothing happens. There are no error messages, and simply nothing happens. I don't know when this error has occurred because I don't use those features often but it may have been a long back time since those problems occurred.I tried to look for it online but nothing has worked. My CD/RW is also not working even though windows recognizes it and it shows up in my computer. I wonder if they are all a related problem.

Any help would be great!

My specs are: Win XP Pro OEM SP3, intel pentium D 3 Ghz.
am running AVG free 9 and updated everyday

Tried to access system information from xp accessories and got report "windows cannot open help and support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named "help and support." We then go around in circles with same notice the result. Could this be from the recent upgrade that p.c. advisor e mailed recently. Have to admit don't use sytem information or help much.

Answer:system information not accessible help and support

Start, Run, type in services.mscand click OK. Scroll down to Help and Support and double click it. Click the button to start it and change the startup type to Automatic.

I recently upgraded the system, earlier my memtest.exe was not working and "Support Information" in the System Properties was showing oem logo and support links with around the world support phone numbers. But after the upgrade my memtest.exe started working but the "Support Information" in the System Properties is not showing the desired help files anymore.

Is there any way to fix it, I found the OEM support files in the C:\Windows\Help but "Support Information" in the System Properties is not indexed to it. Any way to edit the Help page that is presently poping up...? I request community advisor experts to look into this matter...

So I am sitting here on my MacBook Pro which in my opinion does not have any wireless issues whatsoever, it works. I still own this ThinkPad with a garbage wireless card, and I feasted my eyes on an Intel 7260 but lo and behold, it isn't on the whitelist! Scouring eBay and Amazon I did find a FRU, but would the number of that FRU be the same on the Hardware list? Lets see, well I cannot even find it. All I get are Page Not Found errors which to me is a hilarious joke of Lenovo's support. What does this mean for me? Is my X230 at a very very unnecessary end of life? Should I like, fork out £1400 for an "upgraded" model that probably won't fix most of my problems? My problems is money and saving money. Should i now look elsewhere? No, because I'd rather keep my money to actually FIX my current laptop's problems (the N2200 is a garbage card and would like to replace it with something that's up to date to todays technology but that isn't happening by the sounds of it) I am frustrated with my current laptop's problems and it's having a large effect on my studies. And possibly you can also lose customers by inadequate non-existent support and failure to give us the freedom to actually let us upgrade for those who do. For those who don't, more like.

I know there is a folder on my computer called System Volume Information which allows you to restore files from a previous state.

How can I create a current backup, and delete the old restore points?

Answer:[SOLVED] System Volue Information

Hello Activeradio

To back up your system you can use the XP backup program which is free
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software_download.htm

Or a pay for program such as Acronis which is better
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...cts/trueimage/

Restore Points
If you turn off System Restore all the Restore Points will be deleted.
Turn System Restore back on
Check that a new Restore Point has been created. If not, create one manually.

Or you can delete all Restore points except the most recent one
1.Click Start | Run.

2.In the Run box, type CLEANMGR

3.In the Select Drive dialog box, choose the partition where the restore points are located.

4.On the More Options page of the Disk Cleanup dialog box, click the Clean Up button.

This will delete all the restore points except the most recent one and free up space on your hard disk.

Sounds more like the message that appears when copyin g NTFS to FAT file systems, CD uses a different file system again - as long as the original files were burned and verified, nothing to worry about.

I have a dell inspiron 13-7368 windows 10 with 8 gb RAM.
Lately I've been having problems with shut downs because apparently I do not have much memory left so it would suggest to shut down google chrome, photoshop, any software I would be currently using. Then suddenly while I was using photoshop it converted my resolution screen because of the 'lack' of memory. I checked my storage and I have 78 gbs left in my storage space. What's the problem as to why it keeps telling me to shut down apps due to lack of memory?

Answer:Shutdown to prevent loss of information

Are you confusing storage (hard drive space) with memory (RAM)?
How much RAM do you have in this system and is it all working? Reboot and immediately press F12. Look for option to run Diagnostics and run the memory tests. And run the hard drive tests too.
Do you have a hard drive or a solid state drive? If it's a hard drive, when was the last time you defragged it?

Hello there!

I just don't understand - I had to do a system restore ('course I forgot for what reason) but when I booted up again I had lost a fair amount of disk space. Then XP kept hounding me to DL SP2, although when I did a "search" SP2 entries were all over the place. How can I get back my disk space? I only have a 40G Hard Drive and it truly was holding it's own at about 87%, now I'm down to 80% and still have to install Roxio again. I also used up a lot of space with the HP Photosmart software files. That's another forum! I also installed the SP2 again. I found a lot of folders with duplicate names of programs that I had. I don't know what to do at this point. I just got this computer and so far it hasn't given me any trouble except being a hog with the free space. Seems like I must have a lot of garbage files.

What to do?

I have a Gateway E3460 (think that's the model) with a 40G HD, Pentium 2Ghz processor, 512 RAM and Nividia Video.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi all,

I went to install a new video card (which hasn't worked out) that required me to install SP1a (I had SP1 in prior to this). I also updated the mobo chipset INF software as well as making my bios current. I was having some booting up problems with this card, which at one point had me enter my username and password before booting up. The old card is back in.

When trying to access System Information, I get the following:

Can't Collect Information

Failed connection to this computer. Check to see that the Winmgmt service is running.

The service is running. I've tried rebooting to see if it takes, but it hasn't to date. The session history has my computer name, Windows XP Professional and a third item, 1048032 as REMOVED. How do I go about restoring the information? Do I remove the SP1a install and revert to SP1?

Cheers,
Mike T.

Answer:Solved: Lost contents of System Information

At this point, you might consider a repair reinstallation.

There was no need whatsoever to install SP1a if you had SP1. SP1 contains the exact same thing as SP1a and includes the Java Virtual Machine. That is the only difference between them, so you actually "downgraded" by going to SP1a.

I cannot see any sign of the System Volume Information folder in Explorer or any other file browser program I try.
It is not grayed out, it is not there. When I enter Tools, Folder Options, View, the Show hidden files and folders is selected. As a matter of fact, if I then select Do not show hidden files and folders, the next time I open View, it has gone back to Show hidden files and folders!
Even though hidden folders should therefore show, the SVI folder remains hidden.
I have examined my system by booting with BartPE XPE and there is the SVI folder with all the restore points, etc.
I am using XPPRO, NTFS.

This problem occured on a laptop, if that makes any difference...

Last night, right before I was about to go to bed, I decided to delete some unwanted/unused files. Everything was in the Recycling Bin, but upon selecting "Empty Recycle Bin," havoc broke loose. There were a few movie files and some partial information files, but nothing big (or at least I thought). The annoying fan spun its heart out and everything crashed within seconds. I left it be, assuming everything would be back to normal today. Obviously not. I cannot start up my laptop without at least one problem occuring. On the first attempt, it kept restarting every time it loaded the sign-on page. Eventually it overheated (or something) and crashed once again. Getting frustrated, I let it cool and came back not too long ago. I got the black screen saying Windows couldn't start properly and I had to start differently depending on what caused it (I started normally since I had no clue what happened). Everything was OK, but a few programs (especially AOL) wouldn't start since some file wasn't a proper Windows image. Of course, a few seconds later, everything went black. Now, everything continually starts in Safe Mode, but before I can do anything, everything crashes again.

The only reason I'm able to post this is because I'm at home with my slower pc.. I'm really confused and could use any and all suggestions as to what I should do (or what I did wrong). Thanks!

Answer:WinXP Continual Crash/Information Loss

It sounds like you may have accidentally damages some critical system files.

You need to run a repair of the operating system. If we knew which one we could advise better, all we know is that it will be NT or 2000 or XP.

Assuming XP, boot from your XP CD and choose the Repair option. You data is always at risk in any such operation, hopefully its backed up?

Hello all,

First things first, here are the specs:
OS: Windows 7 - CPU: Intel Core i3, 2330M, 2.2GHz - Memory: 4GB - HD: 500GB - Model: ASUS A54C

I've had this computer for 6 months. I initially had TrueCrypt encrypting the whole hard drive. The performance was incredibly slow, so 2 weeks ago, I decrypted the drive and completely restored (formatted) Windows, restoring the 2 original partitions. After the restoration, I re-installed Norton 360, Microsoft Office 2011, Google Chrome, Firefox and Spotify. I have not re-installed TrueCrypt.

The computer is still painfully slow. It often crashes when performing simple tasks like web browsing. I am constantly reciving the following error message:

Quote:

Your computer is low on memory. Save your files and close these programs:

Spotify
Desktop Windows Manager
Asus Live Update

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Hello All:

Lately I have been encountering intermittent video signal loss and at the same time the system hangs. (Control-Alt-Delete does nothing) The only way out of it is a hard boot. Sometimes the hard boot will not work either. When you push and hold the power button, it will turn off and then turn back on immediately without "re-pushing" the power button and the system is still hung. During those times I end up unplugging the power supply and plugging it back in to start fresh.

The video signal loss and hang occurs at different times. Sometimes it is right after login, other times it can be while browsing the internet, other times while in the middle of a Flight Simulator X game. There seems to be no correlation to amount of memory usage.

I recently upgraded from my integrated ATI Radeon X200 video to ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro PCIe video card. Shortly afterward I found that my Integrated LAN was fried. I have since replaced it with a LAN card. The video signal loss was occurring prior to the video card replacement.

Any thoughts as to my possible problems would be appreciated.

Possible sources I have thought of are:
under-powered power supply
failing motherboard
faulty video card (doubtful)

Gateway 827GM
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP3
2.5 GB RAM

So, I was running SpaceSniffer, an application that scans my hard drive and displays where the most memory is being used up, and I found something extremely interesting. My Recycle Bin on the desktop is empty, as it should be since I just emptied it. However, the Recycle Bin folder within System Volume Information is occupying 199.9 GB of my space. Can someone tell me what's going on?

I really need to fix this so I can fit even more of the junk I actually want on my drive!

Answer:Solved: Weird 199 GB Recycle Bin in System Volume Information

Update: The files detected by SpaceSniffer seem to be episodes of shows and some movies. I never downloaded these things, and it might lead to me concluding that someone's been using my hard drive to store almost 200 GB of their stuff in a hidden area. The Recycle Bin in Windows Explorer is empty.

Last night I completed some computer maintenance. When it completed de-fragmentation for my main drive it showed my drive was still 53% fragmented. 3/4 of the fragmented files were within the System Volume Information. as shown in attached image below

My problem is even after running disk defragment via System Mechanic Professional 7 & within Vista defragment tool the files are still fragmented.

Does anyone have any ideas on how this problem can be fixed? Excluding reformatting drive.

TIA

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 on my system. It was clean until I decided to give out my External HDD to a friend. And when I plugged it back into the comp, I forgot to scan it and then saw that it had this strange Virus of sorts. @Recycle.bin and System Volume Information. Soon, it had spread to all my partitions. I tried deleting them manually, but $recycle.bin would just pop back up, While System Volume Information wouldn't even get deleted and I can't open it as Access Is Denied even when logged in as Administator. I've tried Norton Internet Security 2011 and Bitdefender Total Protection 2011 but to no avail. I tried Autorun Eater and Malwarebyte Anti-Malware. But those too, failed. Finally, I installed Ubuntu on my system and maually deleted the troublesome folders. And then permanently deleted them from the trash too. Only to see that the Folders were back in Windows! Any suggestion?

Answer:[SOLVED] $Recycle.bin and System Volume Information Virus

$Recycle.Bin = the recycle bin
System Volume Information = hidden system folder - system restore

You will find these 2 on every NTFS partition where system restore is turned on.

Why do you suspect virus?

Alright, i've recently fixed the chokes ingame.

Basically, my ping is fine, usually 20-50. That's not the problem, the Loss and chokes are at 0.

However i'm getting headshots and such which are just NOT registering at all and no, it's not the hitboxes or anything like this.

Turns out I had to add some user config file to my router to play steam games on Be* ISP. So I did, got rid of all the times out and what not, yet still I can feel this information dropping.

So I print screen my net_graph 3, it looks like this -

Is it just me or the bottom right value, the information being sent out IS FAR too low?

I played at my friends at they were both hitting 100 on a 100tick server, yet mine stoop to 20 and max at 40-50 or so.

There's certainly something wrong there.

Anybody able to help me with this?

My rates -

Rate 25000
cl_cmdrate 100
cl_updaterate 100

That's definetly not the problem.

Any other ideas?

My computer keeps coming up with this error that looks like this.

Some times the error reads a bit different but it all does the same thing. I don't know what's wrong with it. I have had it for just under a year. It has done this at least 10 times. Every time I have to refresh the computer or take it back to default and I'm so sick of doing that. Is there a way to fix it. I am using a 64bit version of windows and have 8GB ram so it's not that. But it seems to be related to memory even though I have a lot of it there.

Please help. Thank you.

Also, sorry if this is in the wrong part of this site. I wasn't entirely sure where it belonged.

Answer:Close windows to prevent information loss error??

Hello Glyxz, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Here are a couple of things to check for this:

1) Is your hard drive low on free space? If so, then you will need to free up space for the page file.

2) Did you turn off the page file, or set the page file to be to low? Some programs require that you have a page file no matter how much RAM you have installed. It's recommended to leave the page file set to be managed by the system so that it will automatically be increased in size as needed.

A buddy of mine helped me build my first computer a few months ago, a bunch of people from PCPartPicker helped me figure out what components to get. Anyways, I'm not the best with computers, the internals and what not but I'm pretty sure my computer should be able to handle some heavy stress. I just recently I started getting this popup (attached below) which is kind of made me panic.

This time is said to close MB and then other time it would list 2-3 applications at a time. I've never had this problems before with none of my computers. I thought I got a virus as first.

Any idea if this is legit? If so what is going on? My old computer from 3-4 years ago was able to handle Chrome with 20 tabs open, Photoshop going, Word/Excel and 5 other applications opened at the same time. Never got an error like this before. I'm on Windows 7 by the way, if that matters & can post my specs if needed.

Any help would be much appreciated

Answer:Close programs to prevent information loss popup?

Is this the machine in your specs? Post specs if not.

With 8GB of RAM you shouldn't get that warning. Maybe some program is leaking memory. It is a legit warning, not sure the reported program actually responsible.

Hello friends!

I am working with Windows XP SP2. I am facing a problem in accessing the folder alled "Syatem Volume Information". I found this folder in all the drives of my HDD, but whenever I click in any of them using Windows Explorer, I get an error saying "System Volume Information is not accessable, Access is denied".

I have disabled the System Restore feature and I guess this folder is used to store files of System Restore. Even after disabling System Restore, there are files left in this folder which is using a good amount of my HDD space.

Please tell me as to how can I access the contents of this folder and is it safe to delete whatever is in that folder. Moreover, as I already disabled the system restore feature, is there a way to completely remove this folder.

Thank you.

Answer:Solved: Problem to access System Volume Information Folder?

Hi,

Yes, the SVI (System Volume Information) folder is where SR (System Restore) restore points are stored. SR will place a SVI folder on every partition it sees. This will include external hard drives and some flash drives. There is no way to permanently remove the SVI folder, other than hiding the partition with 3ed party partitioning software. Normally disabling SR empties the SVI folder.

Here are instruction on how to access the SVI folder.
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#SRFileLocation

If the Indexing Service is turned on you will see a catalog.wci folder in the SVI folder.

Hi, my name is Rick.  I'm new here.  My brother said this is always a very helpful group.  I searched the forums, but all the keywords I could think of are too general, so I apologize if my topic has been covered.  If so, a link to the appropriate thread would be much appreciated.

ISSUE:  Over the last few days, I keep getting this error message:  "Close programs to prevent information loss.  Your computer is low on memory.  Save your files and close these programs:  Internet Explorer.  Windows will only close enough programs to restore needed memory."

During the times when this has popped up, I only had 1-2 basic programs open, like email and one webpage, such as Google.  In some instances when I closed the error message, the computer would continue to work.  In others, it would eventually crash.

I ran the Memory Diagnostics Tool, and no problems were detected.

My Dell laptop is 15-months old.  It came with Windows 8 and I upgraded to Windows 10 about a month ago.  I have all the latest Microsoft updates.  I try to keep my computer clean and uncluttered.  I run Glary Utilities, Malwarebytes, and SpywareBlaster.  Here is my system information:

Windows 10 Pro
Version 1511
OS Build 10586.36
Intel Core i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00 GHz
8.00 GB installed RAM
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Thanks in advance for any/all assistance.  -Rick

I still have Facebook contact information within my Windows 10 People but I'm not being allowed to delete them. I get told that I have to remove them from Facebook first but since we can no longer connect and sync contacts with Facebook, I can't do that either. I'm setting up a new desktop PC and I really want all of that irrelevant contact information to be gone.

Answer:How do I remove leftover contact information within People from the loss of Facebook Connect?

I believe this limitation was for Windows Phone 8. In Windows Phone 8.1 and beyond, I was still able to sync my Facebook contacts with my device. Now in Windows 10 Mobile, I just checked now and indeed I can still choose to sync or not to sync my Facebook contacts from the Facebook (official) app.
Anyway, login to your people.live.com account. At the upper right most corner, you should see your photo or account name, and underneath that you can see small icons (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Click on the three dots there, and in the next page you should be able to "Remove this connection completely" for your Facebook contacts.

Two things. First, my virus scanner, Trend Micro, has picked up and quarantined several viruses in the system volume information folder. I then went and tried to get into the folder, but was denied access. When i click to open it is says "C:\System Volume Information is no accessible. Access is denied." Second, when i look in my task manager and the processes that are running on my machine, i often see a weird program running that is named with random letters and numbers like "QO8F91.EXE." When i end it, another one, with a different name, comes up the next time i use my computer. Below is a scan from hijack this, which shows the weird program running. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:[SOLVED] Will my system support XP?

I've attached my full system specs in a text file. I just need to know if my current system will support a 64-bit operating system (Windows 7 Professional) because in the past I have had systems that did not, but I don't know exactly which component prohibited it. One thing to note is that the text file says I have 1GB of RAM, but I recently upgraded to 4GB.

Answer:Solved: Does my system support 64-bit OS?

Yes it does.

The CPU has to be able to run 64-bit instructions and yours can.

Of course you will need enough Ram for the OS as well, you will be fine with 4GB.
You also need reasonable Graphics hardware to get the Aero theme.

Hey guys, how's everyone doing? I am having an issue changing the OEM system information in Vista. I can add all the information about my company, but the logo is doing something odd.

I can fix the issue with the pixel resolution, that's pretty easy. It's flipping the colors. It's a blue and white logo (visit http://digitalsanityservices.com, it's on the top left), and it's making the blue part white, and the white part blue. I used Adobe Illustrator to flip the colors in the hope that it would then flip them back to the original. No go, it displayed it the same way. Windows 7 does the same thing, XP and below works fine.

Any thoughts?

Since my office is closed today due to this nasty NY snow storm, getting to spend some time trying to fix the issues & slowness of my computer. Haven't done one of these series of scans in a long time, so I'm long overdue anyway.
The first issue I've been having, but I found support on this forum already on how to resolve it (hopefully) is oftentimes at startup getting the message "Alert! System battery voltage is low. Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility". In a bit I'll shut down and try pressing down on the battery to see if it just needs to be re-seated.

Now to the bigger issues. Earlier this week I think I may have clicked on a website that may have caused some of my issues, since it was after that when my system no longer generates sound. And when I try to launch the "Creative Volume Control" from the taskbar, I get a popup that states "Unable to change the sound device to your selected device." I have to click OK on a message like that twice before it displays the Creative Surround Mixers application on the screen partially and then get one of those Windows messages of "SpkSet.exe has encountered a problem and needs to closed." I know yesterday when I did the same thing the message stated "SurMixer.exe" as the one that encountered the problem, so it doesn't seem to be consistant.

I still get this message even after doing a System Restore to this past Friday.

I've als... Read more

I'm running a Thinkcentre A55 8705 desktop.  My wife used it twice in the last year and a half, and I just took it over, reformatted it to factory install.  I updated XP to service pack 3, and updated the bios and sound card driver via the lenovo site. This is also hooked up to my high def television via a DVI to HDMI cable to my Nvida Geforce 9500 card (only thing in the case that is non factory).   The sound is hooked up with a single cable that looks like a headphone jack on either side, i cant remember what it was called, the guy at best buy suggested it.   Anyway, when it was first plugged in, i heard sound come from my TV, and was working great.  I shut the system down to hook it hard wire into the internet in another room to download some random things (acrobat, itunes, flash), and when i brought it back online with the sound hooked up, no sound came out of my television. If the cable is unplugged, i can still get sound out of the internal speaker, but when its plugged in, i get nothing.  The status bar says i have sound and its turned up, but no sound coming out.  I tried updating the sound driver again, resetting, etc, but no dice.  I looked for 2 hours last night for a solution and can't find anything.  I'm about to just settle for the internal speaker, unless someone can help me out.

Already tried a web search for any support information or dedicated help forum for this alternative chrome-based internet browser called SuperBird (version 27).  If anyone knows about any, please tell.  The help file is not much.  The website for the browser also is not much.  Messages to their email address about questions have not been answered.  I've been trying this browser the last few days and it seems responsive, although a few features do not work.

I think it is a great Browser with very few cons, those of which you speak..
May I have the link to the help file you were referring to?  Thank you and when I get more info I will pass it on. The biggest con for me is no automatic updating when a new version comes out. I have had to uninstall and reinstall each time.

I am using Windows XP Pro and recently created a restore point in my System Restore program. This was over a month ago, and I no longer need that restore point. When I defrag with either Diskeeper or Norton Speedisk, I get a report on a good number of defragmented/defragmentable files, most of which are in the Restore folder in my System Volume Information folder. I was able to access my System Volume folder and found the offending file but hesitate to delete that file unless I can be assured that I can do so safely.

Would a simple delete be okay?

Attached is a screenshot of the folder in my Systems Information folder.

Hey, everyone!

Looking for some advice on getting my GB back, if possible.
I hope I'm posting in the right area.

The other day I had to do a System Restore on my Compaq (Windows XP) so far everything is working fine now. Though, I noticed my computer was running slower than usual. I checked my overall GB usage and found that it had dropped 20GB since the System Restore. My computer is currently 140GB in total and right now only 50% of it is left, making my computer run...not so quickly.

I used TreeSize and found that the missing 20GB was being used in "System Volume Information". I don't mean to sound like a newbie, but what exactly could be suddenly taking up 20GB of my space since the system restore? Is it possible for me to get it back without harming my computer? How do I go about doing that?

Someone mentioned that I should make sure it wasn't trojan/virus related, so I've run anti-virus, anti-malware, PC tuneups, etc. Everything is clean. Any advice?

Thanks so much!

EDIT: Okay well, after searching deeper into the "System Volume Information" I see that all the used GB is coming from a folder inside called "_restore{" and there must be 70+ different files inside, I'm guessing these are system restore points? Most of them are less than 1GB (though there are so many it apparently adds up) but one of them is a whopping 13.3GB by itself. What can I do about all these?

Hey guys:

I'm an idiot!!! Last night I deleted my System Volume Information folder off of a Raid-0 set of hard drives. As I mentioned, this raid set is not drive with my XP on it. This is just a drive for storage of pictures, video, and other programs I prefer not to have on my C:\. I did take go as far as to turn off System Restore before deleting it. Now when I boot up I cannot access the drive at all. It tells me that "The drive is not formatted. Do I want to format it now?."

I don't want to do that and I am wondering if there is a way to create a new System Volume Information folder so I can access the drive again???

Thanks

Answer:Deleted System Volume Information Folder on a Non-Operating system drive???

I think you are connecting the dots...where there is no connection.

Deleting a system volume folder...isn't possible by me, even when system restore is not used (I always disable SR immediately after a clean install). Even though the folders are empty and I don't have SR employed, the system won't allow me to delete these empty folders.

I believe that the problem is your RAID setup...perhaps you ought to try to repair it.

from first post in xp:
Hello all...new user here
When I click on System Information (System Tools>System Information) nothing happens. I get a very quick hour glass and then nothing. When I Run msconfig, the window for system.ini and boot.ini is empty as well. A third problem is when I tried to install Nero 7, I recieved an error saying: "Unable to access shell manager"
This is what I've done so far/other info:
1. Ran System Restore to about a week ago (didn't have the problem then)
2. Ran "search and destroy" and all is good there
3. I've had problem with Media Player 10. Windows Update wants me to install a security update. After I install it, I get a problem running video. At that point, the computer gives me a link to install the latest version of media player 10 (which I do) and works fine until Windows Update asks me to install the very same security update. If I install the update, the problem starts all over again.
Any help, greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello I have Windows 7 starter on my HP Mini Laptop

I'm just wondering is there something wrong with my Windows 7 or could it be a virus?

I cannot:
enter safe mode
system restore back to factory settings
view system information

I attached how my pc looks when I click on things like firewall, system restore, system information etc.

Also, I often see corrupt disk notices and there was a notification on my desktop that said my WIndows version was unlicensed or something like that.

My Windows come up and I can get on the Internet with no problem, but the first thing that made me realize something was wrong was when I kept getting corrupt disk messages. Chrome corrupt disk etc.

What I have tried: was running AVG scan, nothing found AND pressing F2 and running all the test and everything passed, hardware etc.

Could this be a virus or a windows 7 software problem.

Answer:Can't See System Information or System Restore, Can't Enter Safe Mode

I had trouble defragging {dbcbca6a-9a27-11df-94f4-028037000300}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752} in C:\System Volume Information using defragler. It is more than 2GB large. Is it normal for one system restore to be that large? Norton and MBAM says the my system is clean. Only 31.1 GB total used. Abou 250 GB (I think) total hard drive space

Also the tracking folder is showing weird characters:
?Cf????? ?O?8m windellstudio15 NW?Dc`A??$??{?? =?e? ? ? ???? ? ... Read more

Answer:ONE System File in System Volume Information more than 3GB large. Can't Defrag

Defragging does not reduce file size, it only moves files to improve speeds.

Do a disk cleanup maybe its system error storage, or something the operating system stores
Unless it is a virus that is hogging your hard drive space (Inwhich case I would do a scan with Malwarebytes anti malware from malwarebytes.org)
It could be a crucial file, but I would think it would be a bit smaller.

your hard drive has enough space to make that 3 GB look like megabytes....

Keep your eye on that file. If it continually gets bigger, chances are, it could be a virus.

Some how my old friend managed to upgrade my PC from Windows XP to Windows 7 with that chipset driver CD I gave him. I don't know how he did it. I would ask him but he moved to Germany. Anyway I've heard you can run the setup with Windwos Vista compatiblity mode but I don't know if it is safe. Anyone know?

Answer:Motherboard support CD does not support your operating system

Download the drivers from the manufacturers website. The driver CD is likely outdated anyway.

I bought my computer used and have never been able to make a System Image disc for back-up purposes and I've had some other problems with "Backup and Restore" as well. I always get this error: "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x80080005)." By doing research I discovered that this happens because the SYSTEM does not own the "System Volume Information" file, the user does instead (me).
When I got the computer I took ownership of the entire C drive because I kept having permission problems. Now I know better and would not do that again, but I guess the only problem it caused was with "Backup and Restore" - two years on and I haven't had any other problems.
Anyways, I've tried changing ownership of System Volume Information, but it won't let me. I've found several ways to take ownership, but how can I get Windows to let me give ownership back to the SYSTEM? Or is there a way to return the file to its default state, or maybe copy a new version and delete the old one? Thanks for your help.

Here is the post where I found the solution to my backup problem:
Starting Windows 7 Backup : Server execution failed(0x80080005) ????

Answer:missing OS name in system properties and system information

Hello tridentcore and welcome to Seven Forums.

I noticed from your snips that System Information (snip # 2) does show under Version that SP1 was in fact installed. So at least part of your system is showing correct information. Have you completely shut down your system and rebooted since you did the SP1 update? (Not just a restart.) And your English is fine!
