Can't open another program or application and Taskeng process

Question: Can't open another program or application and Taskeng process

Hello one and all,
I have a Gateway laptop with Win XP and have a problem with 2 things, and they are probably related. The first is when I go to shut down the amazing taskeng process is still running... always... how do i get rid of it? And I do not have another .exe file anywhere, I checked.
Also, when I try to open another application from my desktop icons or from my start up menu, it thinks and thinks and never opens. I can still work on the internet or anything that I may have open already. And the task manager does not list that those programs are running or trying to open.

I have PC tools Spyware Doctor also.

I don't know what to do... PLEASE help.

Preferred Solution: Can't open another program or application and Taskeng process

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all I'm new to this forum, but not exactly new to computers, however - I have a strange thing happening in process explorer that i cant quite figure out, and I'm hoping that one of you guys (and gals) can shed some light on this for me:

I use "Process Explorer" ( instead of the normal Task Manager to view running processes on my system (Windows Vista Ultimate) - and under one svchost process i get a loooong list of "taskeng.exe" 's running, and i mean no less than 20 or 30 - and the longer i leave it, the more of these processes get added, all taskeng.exe - SO which app, I wonder, is insisting on scheduling summin, every few minutes, and why does the process not quit. The list of taskeng's doesnt use any cpu power, but of course it just sits there in the memory and annoys me....

Any Ideas? (I would really appreciate any input)

Hey guys,I have an Acer Aspire 5735 laptop that is being really really weird. It keeps shutting down, being really slow (sometimes taking half an hour to load up properly) and sometimes randomly showing error messages. This morning when I turned it on it showed the following errortaskeng.exe - Application ErrorThe instruction at 0x10004980 referenced memory 0x10004980. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185.I read the error message thoroughly, and it seems to point to either the memory or the hard drive being faulty. Any ideas on what to do, or should I not even be worrying about the messages?Any advice would be great,Shark Boy

Using Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I use a program called Turbo Lister 2 for selling things on ebay. I use it almost daily, but a couple of days ago I clicked on it and it didn't open. I tried to run as administrator, eventually did an uninstall an reinstall, but still won't open. The weird thing is that it when I click it, it shows up on the processes tab on TM for a couple minutes then disappears again. Everything else seems to be working fine. I ran all of the hard drive and memory tests that come up when I push esc before windows loads and it shows no problems. Anybody have any idea what is going on and how to fix it?

P.S. I am a complete retard when it comes to computers (all I know is how to use one), so please be patient if/when I don't know exactly what you're talking about and I won't feel bad if you talk to me like I'm 5 about this stuff.

Answer:Program won't open but process shows in TM Windows 7

I think you should re install the windows and then install the program it might be infected by the viruses. So try it out first.Click to expand...

I tried to do that, but the laptop did not come with any OS discs, and reinstalling Windows did not work when I went through recovery in Windows. In fact, reimaging wasn't even an option (I did a clean reinstall of Windows last year on a new hard drive, and apparently don't have the original retail information on this one).

Hey guys sometimes this issue happens to me and basically I will open a program and it will NEVER open. I check task manager and I see this.

I attempted to open the program 5 times and it just goes in the task manager and does this:

The program worked fine before so I don't get what is wrong?
ALSO: I can NOT end the process at all. I tried a billion times it wont end.

Answer:Program won't open, stays in task manager & can't end it's process

Your task manager? window doesn't look like mine for Windows 7. If it is truly a process running in
Task Manager you can't end, open a dos box (cmd) and @C:\ type taskkill /f /im launcher.exe *32

I change something and save it. the file type is still cfg but now it always open with a notepad which coz my game to how do i remove the open with notepad and set it to a an unknown application..which my com don actually recognizes it and will prompt me to search the internet.

Answer:Changing open with default program to unknown application.

Press Start (the Windows icon on the bottom right), type regedit and press enter. Press Continue when the UAC thing pops up. Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes, find the .cfg key and delete it. This will reset it so when you open any cfg file it will ask you which program you want to open it with. You may have to restart your computer after completing the above steps.

You posted this in the wrong section by the way.

had this problem started a few weeks ago, really sick of it. whenever i open itunes/skype/any file vista asks me what application i want to launch it with. i cant even go to system restore and return it to a previous setting as i dont know what application to get on the program.

please help, i know very little about computers

Answer:Solved: Whenever I open a program it asks what application id like to launch with

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I've got a quicklaunch shortcut to:

%windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}

That takes me straight to my explorer favourites. What I notice is that when I launch that, I get a new explorer.exe thread appear in the task manager. When I close it though, that thread remains active. It's not doing anything, but it's still there. Anyone know why it wouldn't terminate? Is it to do with how I'm launching it (using the shell parameter) ?

Here are some tests I did, in each case I started out with only my main explorer instance (the one that holds the systray, quicklaunch etc).

1. Click my shortcut from quicklaunch shown above.
2. Click the red "X" to close it.
3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 four more times.

After closing all those explorers, so I was back to having only my main explorer, I did this sequence:

1. Click Start->Run-> and typed explorer and enter.
2. Click the red "X" to close it.
3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 four more times.

Also, after a while that one single extra explorer disappeared. I guess it stuck around a minute or so, maybe in case I decided to start explorer again, it would save me a few milliseconds by not having to re-launch fully.

The shortcut ones do also disappear eventually sometimes, but other times they don't.

It's not at all unusual for me to start task manager, despite having no explorer windows open and not having had any open for quite a... Read more

Hi: my first post and I need help. It seems like I have a very nasty virus and I admit I feel very stupid.

I use Vista 32 bit Service Pack Two.

Basic Problem: I cannot open Word, Disc Clean up, RKILL, Malaware OR ANYTHING. That is because every time I try I keep getting a regular looking dialog box with this exact message:

In Blue Bar accross the top "Open With"
Then in grey area : "Choose the Program you want to open this file"
File iexplore.exe

Now in White area : Internet Explorer Microsoft Corporation (with the regular Microsoft logo)
Other Programs
When I hit the + These programs show up: Adobe, Media Center, itunes, Word, Notepad, Paint, Real Player

Of course none of these work. Then there is BROWS . . . IF NONE OF THESE WORK BROWSE THE WEB
AGAIN, nothing works

Steps I have taken to try to fix.

Run Internet Option to remove browsing. FAIL

Finally got the rkill--and got this message in my notepad :

My disk light is often constantly locked on solid during internet activity and I never know what is happening. I know I can bring up the Task Manager but it moves around too fast and the running apps are usually mysterious in what they are really doing. There must be a tool out there that takes the top two or three applications/processes that are causing the solid light and not only displays them but explain what their purpose is.

Any programs?

Windows Media Player 11.

Vista Home Premium

After closing off the Windows Media Player application, the audio continues to play.

The wmplayer.exe process is still running in task manager and has to be ended to stop the audio.

Doing some research on the subject and I've found a few things regarding:

And I do notice that this is running as well when wmplayer.exe won't stop.

I am not using any gadget/sidebar for WMP.

However my G15 Keyboard does have built in support for it. So wondering if that is affecting it.

It doesn't always happen either.. Sometimes it closes fine, others it doesn't.

My VB6.0 application process does not Exit under Win 7 but it exits properly on Win XP. After exiting the application process VB6 exe remains running in Task Manager. So every time I need to manually end that process. Is there any way to release all resources held by VB6.0 exe & VC++ dlls on Win 7 OS through VB6/C++ code.

Answer:VB6.0 application process does not Exit under Windows 7

One way i can think of is to create a batch file and pin it to taskbar. Save your work and click the pinned item to terminate it.

taskkill /im /f <insertprocessnamehere>
You can also use Process Explorer to see, after closing normally, which files (dll's etc) remain loaded by the program's process to identify the conflicting ones.

I know there's run commands to open applications, like "mspaint" opens Microsoft Paint and "calc" opens the Windows Calculator...

Is there a way I can close down a program by entering a run command? I know that when you are shutting down the computer, or using a program to shut down the computer, if you put "shutdown -a" in Run, then it will discontinue shutting down.

Does this also work for normal programs like IE, Firefox, MSN, Paint, etc. ?

Does anyone know of an application that does the following: It tracks / monitors any .exe that I select and it tells me what that .exe is doing.

I know I've had a similar program in the past, I just can't remember the name. I was able to track a program's setup.exe and it told me what files it installed on my system, etc.

I also know that there is a program out there that tracks everything that is going on when a program is executed...

These programs would be useful for manual virus detection, etc.

I'll try to make this as un-convoluted as possible. I have multiple machines in my home. One of which, is a headless media server which runs Windows 10. This machine stays on 24/7 and runs various tasks, not the least of which is holding all of my media, and serving PLEX. What I want is for this machine to *always* be connected to a VPN. I have a VPN subscription, and on this machine, I have installed OpenVPN gui client. I can open the OpenVPN client and connect to the VPN just fine. Trouble is, I want this machine to *always* be connected.

OK, now that the scenario has been built... The best way I could figure on doing this, was to create a task using Task Scheduler. I've got the task all set up as follows:

GENERAL> "Run whether user is logged in or not" / "run with highest privileges"
TRIGGERS> "At system Startup"
ACTIONS> "start a program" - <path to .exe and arguments>

My problem is that when I manually click "run", nothing happens, or at least, the program does not start. However, if I change the general setting to use a user account instead of "run whether user is logged in or not", when I click run, the program launches.

Here's the conundrum I'm confronted with: If I have this task set to "start at login", how do I know the task is starting by itself? If I remote into the server machine(which is how I connect to it), then once the desktop loads, I would imagine OpenVPN... Read more

My laptop has blue screened and then the other day when using the internet I got an error saying:

My options were to click ok or cancel to debug. I tried both when the error msg came up and nothing worked.

Ive called Vodafone to try to step me through what the error could be.

Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling the vodafone mobile connect software.
Ive tried numerous different ways to get it to connect.

Answer:svchost.exe application error - Generic Host Process...

I've seen the issue several times associated with Windows Automatic Updates being enabled.

As a test open the Security Center in the Control Panel, select "automatic updates" and turn it off.

Then run services.msc and find "Automatic Updates" there, double click it and set the startup mode to disabled and reboot.

Install any needed updates manually.

Hi, I randomly get more than 1 process of a particular program sometimes, for example 2 processes of utorrent, 2 processes of firefox. This nearly always happens with firefox, and when I end the process using the lesser amount of memory, it doesn't come back most the time, however still does on some occasions. I noticed this a few weeks ago, but I haven't made any major alterations to my system which may have caused this. I've done a few virus/trojan scans and they come up clean.

Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:More Than 1 Process Of An Program

to BC infam0us

That sometimes happens to me, when my computer freezes on me for a bit, but it always disappears. Malware is known to toy around with computers.

Just being curious here, what programs did you scan with, when did this start to happen and did you download/change anything on your computer that day(if you remember)?

Hi, All
We need some of the functionalities of Process Monitor ( But want to develop our own program that include some basic features of Process Monitor, but without GUI etc. We will need to monitor
events of process creation, file access (file open to read /write) and network connection. We will use it mostly for Windows Servers.

Seems that Process Monitor is based on a driver Procmon23.sys. Is there any document we can write our own program to talk to this driver?
Or is there any other driver or open source daemon that we can use to monitor process creation, file access, registry modification, and network connections?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi,I have just bought and istalled an HP PSC 1350 All-In-One Printer, I cannot be sure it is the cause of the problem, but it is the most likely candidate as that is the last thing I installed together with the HP software.Anyway since the installation I have a problem with at least two of my programs (Quicken 2004 and Memory-Map OS2004) When I click the shortcut the hourglass cursor appears briefly and then dissapears, nothing else happens. On investigation I have discovered that the process starts (qw.exe and MMNav.exe)and is using a significant portion of the memory but none of the CPU, hower the application itself doesn't start.I have tried re-installing both programs to no effect, and I attempted system restore which as usual failed to roll back to a previous state.Any suggestions? If not I will try un-installing the HP software although I don't really want to cripple my printer by doing so.ThanksDavid

Answer:Process runs but not program?

once uninstalled if all ok then before reinstalling go into safe mode no connection to net and stop virus checker and firewall. Install software and with luck all will be ok.

Okay, this is definitely tricky.  You have a SmitFraud infection at the very least (it's not usually quite this malicious, so I doubt it's alone).  If everything you say is accurate, then your chances aren't great, but we'll do what we can.  You say can't access anything from a jumpdrive on your computer...but what about a CD?  If you could at least get HijackThis on there, it would prove very useful.Infections can be disabled through the registry, but there are thousands of different entries, so finding the proper ones is an incredibly daunting task.  I could possibly help you disable SmitFraud (no guarantee), but first, get back to me on my question about the CD drive.  In the meantime, I will have to acquire some information.

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

hi guys!

happy new year to all of you!

I am preparing 4 laptops for my business and installing everything at the same time in the 4 devices... there is something i INSTALLED that increased the boot time (from start up to the final windows welcome sound) from 30-35 secs to about 2 minutes, the disk usage led shows that there is something accessing the disk

i tried with task manager and see nothing, i used resource monitor to see what is the disk usage for.. and i can decipher...
then i wonder... are ther out any software that after boot up.. shows me each process.. how many time took to start up or something like that?

something like blue screen viewer that tells you what caused the blue screen
thank you

This can be a bear to find (the disk access thing), but as for your startup times question, I found a free program from R2 Studios that can be very useful:

Startup Delayer Overview | r2 Studios

The program runs at startup. Launch it, click the Running Tasks tab, and then right-click in any of the column headers and select the Start Time parameter. This column then shows the Date & Time each running process started, so you see any long gaps from one task to the next.

I have this running on all my computers for this feature, and this feature alone i.e. I don't even use the main "startup delayer" function!

Sometimes it's difficult or impossible, especially if the process is svchost.exe, to tell exactly what caused the delay, but another tool called Svchost Viewer can at least tell you what services are running for a given Process ID PID:

svchost viewer - Home

If it IS svchost.exe that seems to cause the delay, you might use this to next stop/disable whatever services lie within to see if you can find the issue.

Good luck--that you have multiple machines to check against each other should at least give you a fighting chance to find the issue.

Hi, ATM I'm attempting to run a cheat for a game, however the game was patched a long time ago so the cheat would not work (the game would automatically close the cheat) then I found Process Gaurd which worked, however many others found out about it and it was posted all over the net, which caused the game to be patched (again), so that the game would not run if process gaurd is installed. So, I'm woundering if anyone knows any programs which have the same function as it does, the ability to stop an application being closed by another application.

OS is XP Home SP 2. My wife purchased and installed a game from Yahoo! Games. It works fine, except that occasionally (but not always) when she closes the program, the associated Windows process keeps running. Opening the program again results in two instances of the process and a hung computer. The only fix is to use Task Manager to end the processes.

Since this only happens with that one program, I suspect it's just poorly written. Is there some sort of process control program that will take care of this issue? Or some other fix?

I've got something nasty that is not identified by spybot or adaware nor my antivirus

It shows up as a process which changes name every time I restart. The process is currently

called UD4042.exe. The executable file is in C/Windows/Temp. If I delete it, a new one shows

I tried killing and deleting the process/executable and restarting in safe mode and running

time with windows saying it's modifying my settings.

I've done a hijack this file, but am hesitant to post it because you seem strict about what someone must do before posting one and I'm assuming I'll screw up. Any advice as to how to proceed from here?

Task manager on Windows 8 has a very nice feature that shows hard drive usage per process. Is there a program that can do the same on Windows 7 and possibly Vista?

The reason I'm asking is because my laptop becomes unbearably slow at times. I check the CPU gauge and it stays relatively low (10%-20%) but programs take forever to open. I also look at my HDD LED and at times it may be glowing solid. Plus if I touch that area of the laptop I can feel HDD spinning... so some service is going wild on my system...

I wanted to uninstall then go to to reinstall media player 10 but it won't install it. When I click on the exe file to install, it tells me that it's already installed or something. I'm frustrated at this point.

Good morning,

I just did a Clean install of my Windows 10 Home last night after it developed several corrupt files that I couldn't repair. I previously had Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus on my computer but I somehow think that could have something to do with my corrupted files (not letting me utilize Windows Update successfully).

My question: Does the free 'Open Office' program have a program I could utilize to open Power Point Presentations that I had saved on an External Hard Drive? If so, it would keep me from installing Office 2013 again.

When I had Office installed I only used it for the Word Program and to open Power Point programs.

Any ideas?

But IE doesn't work. When you try to run it, the process opens in Task Manager Processes tab (not in applications tab), and is 14MB in size. But IE doesn't open. And when I click on it to End Process, it simply doesn't do anything. It refuses to close, not even with a 3rd party process manager. Nor does IE ever open either.

On a fresh reboot, there is no IE process open. So I searched the hard drive for iexplore and deleted every file. This in the program files folder, in I386 folder, in prefetch, etc..
Windows apparently replaces with a new one anyway after they are all deleted. Probably Windows file protection. But at least it gets a new copy, however it still doesn't work.

I also ran a script which reinstalls IE, copying the files (including iexplore) off the XP CD. Still doesn't work.

IE does work in Safe Mode though.

I was reading stuff online, and as per that, I told Windows NOT to write alerts, or tell me when programs crash, etc... So that drwatson and debugmgr(or whatever it's called) don't run when it crashes. But it doesn't appear to be crashing, just opening a process and getting stuck and not doing anything. It is actually pretty frustrating to see the process there but it won't close and I can't do anything about it.

And where is Windows getting a new copy of iexplore.exe since I deleted every copy I could fin... Read more

Answer:Has anybody seen this before? IE process won't close, won't open!

Quick update:

When the stuck IEXPLORE.EXE is open, it will not shut down or restart within a decent time. That is, it may shut down, but only after 4 or 5 minutes, takes a long time to close processes and a long time to log off.

During one particular restart, a box popped up saying "SysFader" was not responding, asking do I want to close it. This process was not listed in taskmanager.
I read online it could be nvidia, or IE page transitions, or even a type of virus. But maybe that helps some to figure it out.

Hi guys,

When I was cleaning up my processes I deactivated "ETDCtrl" which is the Elan mouse pad control which allows various functions. I reactivated the process because I want this to oad on startup but now it just refuses to open on startup.

When I reboot and go into the folder where it is stored then it opens and works fine - it just won't open in startup despite it being selected in msconfig. I tried moving a copy into the startup folder but this still doesn't work. Any ideas?

Answer:Why won't this process open at startup?

It may depend on another service which was also disabled.

You could try manually reinstalling the drivers for that device. They should be available from the laptop manufacturers website.

Neither Process Explorer nor Autoruns will display those status symbols.

Hey guys, this is my first post. I read the rules and i hope i live up.

Well, i have a problem that has me very very very annoyed. First off let me tell you my specs:

Dell Inspiron 9300 (less than 1 year old)
1.83ghz Pentium M Centrino
1GB Ram ddr 667mhz
80GB 4900rpm
AtI mobility Radeon x300 128mb (not sure if its dedicated)

This laptop has been my pride and joy for the last year. I am an avid gamer, and i was quite pleased to see that this PC could play almost any game quite well. However, lately my computer has been lagging in a very annoying way, the symptoms are as follows:

Anytime the system is opening a program, say Firefox, the computer seems to alot 99%+ process to that process and the computer totally hangs for a few seconds - SO MUCH THAT NOT EVEN THE MOUSE POINTER RESPONDS! The lag occurs for about 5 seconds, but it has never ever ever happened until the last few days.

Another thing is that when i load up a game (this is the most annoying thing) the lag occurs. But when i hit Ctrl-Esc to minimize the game for a while, the lag becomes overbearing. I ussually do this to check my IM or Itunes while i play the game (Rise of Nations) never had problem doing this before. Now, when i do this, the sound effect of the game lags! So say when i ussually need to here "Thump" i would here "Thu-Thu-Thu-Thump".

Another thing that i used to do is leave itunes play in the background, since i prefer that msuic than the in game music. NOW if... Read more

Answer:Problem with computer lagging (program seem to use too much mem and process)

Sounds to me like you're running out of memory. Before playing a game, try restarting, and then running the game. When you restart or shut down, the memory gets cleared completely, allowing full memory usage upon next reboot.

To give you more options; After that, try increasing the page file. Google it, if you don't know how. If that doesn't work, you can try going into task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and on the Processes tab, right click on some processes and click "Set Priority>Low" on the processes you don't necessarily need when playing a game (ie. Norton Anti-Virus, any firewalls, etc).

I've been using an OCR program (Abbyy FineReader 6.0 Sprint Plus) for scanning and pdf'ing old files for months with no problems. But now, when I try to run it, I get the opening banner, then nothing. Windows task manager shows the program under processes, but not under applications.

MY OS is XP home, which is completely up to date. Everything was working fine until a couple of days ago. I don't think I've changed any settings. I think there were some recent automatic microsoft updates, but I can't recall whether those were just before or just after this problem arose.

Any suggestions very much appreciated! Below is a list of what I've tried so far.

1. Original problem: When I ran the program, I got this error message:

"Internal Program Error:

C:\FineReader6\StartUp\Batch\BatchDoc.cpp, 185."

It gave me two options: OK and Cancel.

If I clicked on OK, nothing happened. Program didn't load.

If I clicked on cancel, I got a runtime error ["This application has
requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the
application's support team for more information.)

Contacted Abbyy technical support and they recommended uninstalling and then re-installing from an url they gave me. Did that. It got rid of the error message, but the program still doesn't run.

2. Tried running the program with virus checking software turned off. No difference.

Couple of issues here.... help!

1) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word doc or excel and try to open it by a click (internet explorer) it opens of the window that comes with the computer to "buy" or ... so I have to save on the desk top, open word or excel then open the document through the software.

2) When I am in Gmail (email) and want to open a word or excel document in (Chrome) it opens a little window which ask if I want to open, save or open/save and where to save it. If I press open another window opens and ask if I want to open it now.
How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

Thank you ahead of time!

What is the best program/application software you've ever used on Windows OS? Any type/category is fine but exclude following types of programs:
1) Security software like antivirus, anti-malware and second opinion scanners. Because there's already millions of those thread at MT. You can include Anti-exes, HIPS and Software Restriction Policy software though.
2) Games. But you can include game enhancing software, tuner etc.

I choose IDM(Internet Download Manager) as my favourite. Years of slow and unreliable internet and could never stream videos. It was a lifesaver or Internet-saver for me.

Answer:Best program/application you've ever used

This is HARD. Kind of helps me realize how much good software exists. Guess I will go with backup since it has saved my a$$ so many times:

Paragon Backup and Restore

Please allow me to credit the following:
Comodo Programs Manager (I use 1.2.188360)-this just works so good but needs tweaks to run on W10
Inkscape-what would the world be without free image tracing/vectoring?
Virtual Clone Drive (Elaborate Bytes)-\very handy DVD emulation that's very well written and clean (I really like that about an app)
Revo Uninstaller Pro for making the full capabilities of the program available for free
AppCheck A/R-big thanks to these devs. Pls keep it going!
WinMerge-another clean app that compares folders (files) making it easy to find changed files in supposedly identical folders and update old ones

Many others out there but these are the ones other than standard security that I think deserve the most credit for being good.

I don't know the difference between an Application and a Program. Thought the Geektionary would help, but didn't find anything there.

I have 2 Dell Windows XP computers.

If I want to copy something such as Microsoft Money from one pc and install it on the other, what exactly do I need to copy? The application or the program?

And where do I find what I need to copy? :confused

Any help in this area is so appreciated.

Answer:Application vs. Program

Well basically an Application is an executable file such as Notepad.exe whereas a program can contain more than one application along with numerous other files such as DLL files.

Since the days when Windows had a registry it is far more difficult just to copy a program as it often has numerous entries in the registry which will point to locations of files within the program - this is why prgrams these days are generally installed. Only if the program contains a small number of files or is a self contained executable (such as Notepad which is both a program and an application rolleyes) can a program be copied.

Hope that's all clear. :confusedrolleyes

I was wondering if there is software that can show me what process(s) might be running or causing a program to stop functioning.I am using Cakewalk Sonar 8.3 (audio/midi recording & playback software) on my Dell Inspiron M6400 laptop.  During playback of midi files using VST and DXI synths, playback may stop at any given moment.  It doesn't happen to often.  Maybe once every few hours.  We use this during performances so if this happens during a performance, I must restart sonar.  Fortuneately I do not need to reboot the computer but it still is a problem.  This laptop is used only for my music and is not connected to the internet.  WIFI is disabled and all unnecessary functions have been disabled.  I would like to find a way to see what processes or services are running when Sonar locks up.  It would be very helpful is there is some software that could be running in the background that would identify running processes or services.  In this way, I may be able to isolate what may be interfering with Sonar.Any help would be greatly appreciated.ThanksJan Dell Inspiron M6400 3.06 mhz   1gb  1067mhz ram   Roland UA101 usb external DAW.

I am currently waiting "on line" in the virus removal forum, waiting (im)patiently for help with a virus that locked me out of my anti-virus. I did a restore to two days earlier, and firefox stopped working, plus the restoration that I did doesn't show up anymore. And there is an "Avast system restore" listed, even though I haven't touched restore since I posted in the virus forum on Nov 2, so something is definitely flakey.
So Back on Topic: I won't go near IE8, while still on XP, so I have no choice but to use chrome. (I am in the process, of getting set up with a new pc with windows 7, but I haven't been able to do that yet, so I'm still talking about XP). Chrome is so incredibly slow, it's driving me a little batty. I assumed my PC just couldn't handle chrome. But now I see that numerous autoruns were added by googleinstall. I don't know what I need, and what I don't. I'm just using chrome until I get the green light to try re-installing firefox. However, K-9 web protection is repeatedly notifying me of one or two google things that are being blocked from accessing the web, because they are in the "chat" category - a setting I chose. I don't want these applications, and they are NOT installed as plug-ins as far as I can tell.
Does anybody know what process/program/file is doing this, and how I can disable it? the only google plug-in is google update. Can I/Should i disable that? Oh, and for the record... I am using chrome WITHOUT being signed in to any... Read more

OK, I think I have some sort of virus and didn't see anything in the forums that sounded the same.

Starts out with a balloon on the taskbar pointing from a red shield with an x on it similar to the exit button on the top right of a window. The balloon says:

Your computer may be at risk.
Antivirus software might not be installed
Click this balloon to fix the problem.

Then I get another balloon:

Tracking Process Activated.
*** ADDRESS: 0x17DA839A ***
Cannot deactivate spyware program.
Click this balloon to fix the problem.

I get another balloon, but now that I'm documenting it, it's not popping up.

I typically lose control, can't access internet, can't update windows. When I restart, explorer.exe usually need to be halted.

If the balloon is clicked, a window is lauched and it tries to load software, seems to hang and not load anymore apps.

If I leave the computer static for a while, I get an error, "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."
The program is Cisvc.exe

I've tried to connect to Norton for an update, but I'm unable to connect to the internet.

OK, I think that's it, any help would be greatly appreciated, HiJackThis log follows.

Thanks, Dave

Heres the situation- I play a game has a graphical error in Win 7 unless I end explorer while playing, then its fine.

So far I have been doing this:

Starting game
Ive created a batch file that ends explorer, so thats nice and fast to end the process
After explorer has been killed, go back into game, play for half hour
Finish game, and to get explorer back- Ctrl alt del, new>task>type explorer,

Its a bit lengthy, I was wondering if there is any program out there which can remain open while windows explorer is closed, and when im ready, i can just click a button to restart explorer? or if theres a program/ script i can use to do this? any advice would be appreciated, im a complete programming noob so please speak in laymans terms relatively, thanks.

Hope this makes sense,

Answer:A program/script to start new windows explorer process?

What game? This should not be the way it is done. You should be using Compatibilty Mode at least to get the game working properly.

Aside from that there is no program i have seen or heard about over the years that can do what you want.

Is there a way of killing a process automaticaly when launching a program.
For example when launching a game, kill the anti-virus/spyware checker etc...

Or a program to kill several processes in one go?

Answer:Kill background process's automaticaly when launching a program.

You could write up a batch file that uses taskkill (or taskill) to end the process and then have it kick off the game's exe file.

If you need to kill AV or Anti-Spyware software just to run a game, perhaps it's time for a computer upgrade? I have MS Anti-Spyware and Symantec Corporate AV running, and doesn't affect the performance of my system in any game.

I found out lately that my default browser process keeps opening up even when I close it with task manager.the process opens a few seconds after but doesn't open the application.I have Comodo firewall and I would like to know how to trace what opens that process ,so that I could delete this dll or exe or whatever!.
In the meantime,I made IE7 my default browser and I use firefox to browse. I noticed that this way the IE7 process doesn't use more memory and stays at 4888k.Maybe It cannot do what it is suppose to do because I don't use the default browser.
I changed my default to firefox and noticed that now,It's firefox process that opens.
I ran a virus scan with AVAST and no luck.It didn't find any virusses.I also ran a scan with Spy Sweeper without any luck.I am trying to upgrade the defenitions of ADaware, but it seems that there is an error all the time.

Sometimes when I try to open up internet explorer, seemingly nothing will happen. Then if I check in the task manager, it says that the process is running, but the actual Internet Explorer window itself doesn't open, and I can't figure out why it's doing that. Also, sometimes if I've had several IE windows open, it will freeze them or something, and I can't even open the task manager until I've closed most of them. Does anyone know why either of these things are happening? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Process shows up, but IE doesn't open

There are three main reasons why an IE process starts and cannot be found ....

1) The process is running embedded in another application. This can only be fixed by using the task manager to kill ALL IE processes, then it should start when you run it again.

2) Your computer has two monitors and IE is running on the one that is switched off (happens to me a lot).

3) IE remembers where your multiple monitors were when it last ran and does not check where they are when it starts. If you change the orientation of your monitors (move monitor 2 from the right of monitor 1 to the top of monitor 1) and IE opens in the global space off to the right instead of above the monitor.

Ok gents,

I'll admit, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but my goodness I've been completely baffled by this one.

I start my system as normal.

Certain applications work as normal, like MS Outlook, IOBit security, Advance System Care Pro, Word, Exel, snipping tool and Paint (that's about it)

As for all other programs, when I click on an Icon nothing happens. Task manager shows the process is running but nothing is seen anywhere.

I end the process, go to Program Files and some (15%) applications open up when I run them as administrator - the rest won't show although the process is running.

Google Chrome for instance, also do not open up when run as administrator. It does open though when I click a link in my email...

I don't have a restore point that is old enough and I have done about everything else I could think of:
1) scan for virussess/malware etc
2) defragged, cleaned disc etc
3) ran MS Error finder and the likes etc

Could anyone out there pretty please advise if you think you know what it can be?

(I don't know why but perhaps something in the registry changed or under Users, I don't know...)

Much appreciate anything.

Riaan A
