Solved: Blank screen when booting from XP installation CD

Question: Solved: Blank screen when booting from XP installation CD

Hi there!

I am trying to do a clean install for Windows XP. I inserted the bootable CD and started the computer. It asked "press any key to boot from cd" as usual. I pressed a key and "inspecting hardware configuration" appeared.

Unfortunately just a second after that screen turned blank and stayed so. I tried many times and waited a while also. Didn't help.

If it is relevant, Windows Vista is currently installed to the computer. I'd like to format the C: drive and substitute Vista to XP again. Thought, that it doesn't matter when running XP installation from boot cd, but who knows.

Thanks for Your help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please Help!!

I've recently got hold of a Packard Bell Easynote TJ65 Laptop, and when I turn it on it displays a blank screen. I can hear and feel the Hard Drive running, all lights are appearing and the fans are working aswell. I've tried rebooting, taking the battery out and running it via the mains, ive tried just running it from the battery and i have also taken it appart to check for crushed or broken cable going from the scrren to the Motherboard and its none of these... any ideas??

Need all the help I can get. I can see this being a long winded task if I just attempt it on my own.

Answer:[SOLVED] Blank Screen when Booting Laptop

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

First: is it a new laptop? since you've just got hold of it, or is it second hand?

Next: try connecting the laptop to an external screen. see if you get any vision.
Also: try moving the screen forward and backwards. While doing this look if the light on the screens turns on or off.

Report back if you've done that.

System specs:Lenovo T430UIntel i5-3427U8GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz SoDIMM MemoryHDD 500G 7200rpm ToshibamSATA 24GB Samsung CacheWin 8 Pro, upgraded to 8.1 I rarely use this machine but a couple of months ago I went to boot it up and found that I was not able to get past the Windows splash screen. Sometimes I don't even get the Windows splash screen, I just get a black screen. Rarely I get a Windows screen saying that it is diagnosing a system problem or something to that effect and I can even get to where it will allow me to do some Windows diagnostics but nothing ever comes of it and the process is extremely slow. I called Lenovo, but of course my machine is out of waranty so the tech just gave me a few pointers and said I could send it in to the depo but the potential repair cost could range up to about 75% of what I paid for the machine in the first place. Anyways, after having me try a few things in the BIOS he suggested that it was likely the hard drive. I mistakenly thought from the time that I bought this machine that the OS was installed on the 24 GB SSD so I ordered a new SSD and swapped it in. This made no difference at all as I have now learned that the mSATA SSD drive is merely for cache to speed up booting.  I am afraid that this means the main HDD is at fault, and quite frankly, if I replace it I am going to do a fresh install of Windows 7. But I do have pictures and docs that I would like to salvage if possible. Any ideas on what might be going on... Read more

HI all,

I have a strange windows issue.

When I boot up the PC it seems to boot up normally, but when the windows login wallpaper is meant to show. I just get a black screen. No flashing cursor.

I am also unable to:
RDP - I am prompted to login but after entering creds, the box just returns to the RDP hostname entry screen.
UNC to C$ - When I try to connect to \\host\c$ I am prompted with creds prompt but get access denied when entering valid creds

Strange thing is, I have a filezilla ftp server running on the PC and I am actually able to connect and browse the shared folders.

I can get into Windows recovery , startup fix fails saying unable to repair. But since Filezilla starts, it may not see it as a start up issue ?

I tried restoring from a previous checkpoint which succeeded but same blank screen error occurs.

Where I am at now is I run sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f:\ /offwindir=f:\windows
This runs for some time and fails.
I have attached the CBS.log but cannot see any SR entries like "Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]"

One thing that did happen is that one morning I went to power the PC on, then I usually RDP to it from downstairs. I wasnt able to. So I went to check on it. The fan was revving very loud to I viewed the monitor and it seems like it was stuck in a shutting down mode. So, I didnt notice if that morning when I went to switch it on, if it was already on and I pressed the power button which initi... Read more

My computer started up from sleep this morning to a red screen (an accent color I'm using), thought maybe it had crashed, so I restarted but now all that shows up is the red screen. The cursor still works, the only things that respond to the keyboard are the narrator program and hitting Windows+P brings up the display/projection options, but that's not the issue (as I've seen with most people booting to blank screens).

What the HELL is going on?!

I run XP Pro SP2 on Celeron 2.80 GHz and and 2 Gig RAM.

From time to time I get a blank screen when computer is booting. Everything goes OK to the point when welcome screen is supposed to show. I see a cursor for just a split of a second and then everything goes blank. I have to restart manually, and on second try it usually boots OK.

What might cause this weird problem?

My roommate's laptop displays a blank screen when booting. The model is a HP dv6000. I've tried the troubleshoot provided by HP, which suggested that its an adapter problem, that the ram needs to be reseated, or that its an internal error and requires professional help. It's neither of the first two, so can anyone tell my what the likely cause is and how to fix it?
The screen displays nothing, although I'm guessing the computer boots (you can hear the start up music). When he boots, it gives two system beeps. He's running windows XP.

I'll be checking often, so if you have any questions, let me know and I'll answer then ASAP

No display is seen after turning on the Notebook.Only blank screen with very low blue light appears on the screen. System seems to process .

following are the troubleshooting steps which i have performed.
1. I had a chat session with with online technician and and he advised to remove battery and AC power and pressing power button on laptop. but it did not work.

2. I went to HP authorized service center , progressive pvt. ltd. ,Bhopal , India. They diagnosed the laptop at INR 562 by checking each component on opening laptop parts and reassembled each parts. after diagnosing they referred it to be motherboard problem.

3. Then they tried once more to solve the problem. this time they inserted a bootable flashdrive in notebook and then they turned on the notebook. after 2 or more such attempts laptop started to work as before. screen was displaying BIOS and then windows vista booted normally.

4. But after 1-2 hours, display went off again leaving totally black screen ,while i was working on notebook. 5. I went to service center again and they did the same thing using flashdrive . they called this process as " running UTILITY". but again after some time display went off(totally black screen).

I recently purchased Windows 7 and was trying to boot from the disc to do a clean installation, but every time I do this a blank Windows 7 screen appears with a mouse pointer. There are no options or anywhere to click. It just stays on the Win7 screen.
I've tried multiple discs (32bit, 64bit and even my friend's copy)

Has anyone had a similar problem? Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hello!I have a very serious problem on my HP Pro 3520 All-in-one business pc.When I turn my desktop pc on, the power button lights up, I hear the fan and the hard drive but:-The screen stays blank, even if I waited hours just to wait for it to turn on.-There is no power to usb connected devices (My mouse and keyboard lights won't even turn on, and I use the hp keyboard and mouse pheriperals included in the box, but when I connect the same usb devices to another pc, they work fine). And I tried to use it on a diffrent port on the desktop, but still no life. I tried pressing the CD Drive installed on the pc, it works just fine, the power button and the cd drive button are only the one that is working on the desktop.I searched on google for solutions, no luck.I followed the steps in hp supporthttp://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=5299218&docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-c03...but still no luck (I tried it again like 7 times, but still no signs of life on the screen). Oh and if you're asking, I plugged my pc on my automatic voltage regulator since I bought the desktop pc, like 4 years ago.And this is also my first time here in hp support, and also my first time asking a problem here in english (I'm in the Philippines) so please try to understand. Please help, thank you in advance.

Lately my T61 has been showing a blank screen when I press the power button.  All the usual keyboard lights turn on and flash like they would with a normal start up and the screen has power (light comes from it) but is black (no graphics).  The fan runs normally.  By all appearances the laptop is on and running, but with no display.  This doesn't happen every time, but more frequently as time goes on.  Some times it starts with a display, but then switches to the blank screen during boot up.  Once I can get the OS running I never have this problem.  It always occurs during start up.  Any ideas as to what may be causing this / solution? Thanks.

Answer:T61 Blank Screen when Booting

It's possible that the backlight for the LCD panel is failing. Can you attach an external monitor to test? If so, set display settings to enable both the built-in display and external display. Then see if when the built-in panel goes dark, whether the external display is working OK.

Also has the LCD display started showing a pale pink background recently? That too is a sign of impending backlight failure.

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction for a hardware problem that I am having. In December, I built a new system with the following specs:

Case - RAIDMAX SMILODON
Motherboard - ASUS P5N-E SLI
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz
Memory - CORSAIR XMS2 2GB
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB
Video - EVGA GeForce 8800GTS
Sound - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

It worked perfectly until about two weeks ago. While I was playing the BioShock demo from Steam, all video dropped out to a blank screen. I wound up having to power it down via the power button. When I tried to start it up again though, it is just a blank screen (no POST screens). I can see the drives spinning up, it just acts like it is not getting a video signal. I thought it was the video card, so I sent it back and got a new one. After installing it though, it was the same thing. I decided to break down the system (removed the motherboard, all peripherals), blow it out well with some air and redo my cable management while I was at it.

After that it booted up and ran well for about two days and then happened again last night. I am leaning towards it being either the motherboard, the processor, the power supply or maybe the RAM. Has anyone else seen this before? Unfortunately, my case didn't come with a speaker, so I am not getting any beep codes when it powers on to help troubleshoot this.

Any idea's would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello my name is Zeroos and im new to the Tech Spot family.

I have the current issue with one of the systems i bought from some provider.

As soon i boot up the computer everything is ok. I cheked the BIOS settings the hardrive is not detected via IDE settings. Its because i enabled the SATA/RAID options in the BIOS. If i dont enable this the driver IS detectid via IDE option, but as a 3rd Slave. I tried everything, the jumpers and all and still nothing.

The real issue im having is because the connections i have on the computer with the HD is SATA. Like i said is a computer from a store so i dont whant to touch to much and the warranty goes kaboom. But i do know my stuff about computers. Anyhow the system starts ok, but when its done cheking the RAM memory and detecting the IDE on startup, right after this when its time to start loading Windows XP nothing happens, i get a black screen and nothing loads.

So i have to hit Reset button and everything loads again and tells me "Window could not load sucessfully choose the configuration thats adecuate" or something like that gives me 4-5 options.

So once you accept Las Known Configuration that worked or Start Windows Normally. The system loads windows and everything runs smooth.

Im preaty sure is some kind of issue with the way my HD is set in bios or with the whole RAID/SATA deal, im kind of new to this.

If theres anyone outhere that can give me a hand i would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you so m... Read more

Using exclamation marks and capital letters by the dozens does not yield you any more help, possibly it will be quite the opposite.

Since your system is under warranty and quite obviously does not work correctly then just take it back to the store and have them fix it.

Hello

Have you connected an external monitor to the notebook? Maybe it?s something wrong with the internal display and so you can see nothing on it. It?s worth a try because you can check this in few minutes.

But I assume it?s a hardware problem with the internal display and/or mainboard or something else? Your notebook should be checked from professional people they can disassemble the notebook and exchange hardware parts.

On the Toshiba website you can search for nearest authorized service provider? Good luck!

Hello

From today my PC is getting a blank dark screen while booting, sometimes with or without a moving cursor. Sometimes the blank screen would appear just after the Welcome screen while at other times, just after the windows logo. The blank screen goes away after anything between 2 mins to 5 mins. The last time it happened, it didn't go away even after 7-8 mins, so I had to reset and log into the safe mode.

I checked the Event Viewer and found the following entries in the ACEEvent Logs

-Installed Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium Oct 22nd. Just finished installing all my software over the weekend. I installed Aion, Ventrilo, Photoshop, G15 Programs, G35 Headset Programs, Webroot Sypsweeper, Iolo System Mechanic, AnyDVD, CloneDVD2, Company of Heros and Brothers In Arms. Last products I installed were Webroot Spysweeper and Iolo System Mechanic. I have been using both for many years and never had a problem. After getting everything installed I ran a Deep System Analysis, which is what I always do.

I was then promptedto restart my PC, which is normal. When it restarted it went to the Windows 7 Boot Logo then the screen went black but had a moveable mouse cursor. I left it go thinking it may just take a bit longer to restart. I let it sit overnight and came back this morning with no progress so I hard restarted my PC. When I turned it back on it had a black screen with no mouse at all. I realized right away that my monitor wasn't on because normally the Power Indicator on my Gateway monitor is a dark blue color--well it is red now. It changes to this color when it goes into sleep/power save mode.

I know my PC is not booting up at all though because I have a G15 keyboard and the LCD will show a clock and cycle through that and a few other things ever X seconds. All it is showing now is a G15 Logo--which is what it show during booting.

I've bought a Toshiba L45-S7423 laptop in January 08 and had no problems with it what so ever, until I tried to hook it up to my 37" Toshiba Television.
When I did so the tv display would show the laptop booting up and when it got to displaying the desktop, wallpaper etc.. it was just black, so I went into the BIOS setup and choose one of the options (I cant remeber which one) to try and get a factory reset thinking that the laptop was not recognising the television, from here I do not know what has happened.

When I turn on the power the screen is black and nothing happens, the CD/DVD drive lights up and the power button comes on but the monitor lights are dead, the hard drive light is also dead aswell. The battery is charged (at least its indicator is green)
I have tried putting the recovery disc in which I recieved with it but cannot get anything to happen, it just seems to be sitting dormant.

Is it fixable or is it finished or what can I do with it that could sort it.

Can some one help me to get my new computer operating again?

Answer:Screen is blank and Satellite L45-S7423 not booting up

Hi

Reading your message I thought that you have simply switched the standard display to the external display... and therefore you are not able to see anything on the notebooks monitor... but to be honest this is very strange because you should see the Toshiba splash screen on the internal display and then the display should switch to the external monitor or TV...

So finally I think that this is a hardware issue... But it's really not easy to say what's exactly wrong... Maybe it's a bad luck and the motherboard has died???

If you are not able to boot from the recovery CD and the notebook doesn't response then you should contact the ASP in your country for the help.

Hello everyone,I have a lenovo Y560p. When I press the power button the leds light up, the fan starts spinning 100%, but the screen stays blank. I've tried leaving it like that for 5 minutes. A week ago there seemed to be a similar problem. This happened like 3 times. Anyone has any idea what seems to be the problem? Is the motherboard detecting a problem and preventing it from booting bios? Thanks, Smikiz

Yesterday I return to my dwelling and found the Vista desktop at a blank screen with a cursor. It was in a Windows environment. I CTRL-ALT-DELed to get Task Manager and the only thing "running" (well, "not responding") was "personalized settings." It boots okay in Safe Mode. I ran "chkdsk /f/r" twice on the drive. Still boots into Windows but stops at a blank screen with a cursor, and I can still bring up Task Manager and see those settings still not responding. Maybe one of the crashes it constantly gets destroyed the user profile? But it booted into Safe Mode showing all Desktop icons with no issue. In Safe Mode I created another admin account and tried to boot into that, but same result. Just hangs at a blank screen and if I CAD into Task Manager, the personalized settings will not be responding, and killing it not help. I really can only CAD to restart computer into Safe Mode is my only option.Last Known Config not helped either.Thoughts?Thanks.message edited by CPU13

Yesterday I had this issue with my Lenovo R400 and I alredy solved but i want to post the solution on this forum for other people.  The ProblemMy laptop entered in hibernation mode and in the morning that i tried to turn it on it didnt. The screen was blank doing nothing. Solution 1Disconnect the power cable and battery and push the power button 11 times and in the 11th push the button for 30 seconds. Connect power and push power button. Then you can connect the battery. Solution 2 (The one that helped me)Removed the power cable, the battery and the internal battery of CMOS and let it disconnected all for 15 hours. A few days ago I was running a program that builds the music database on my mp3 player, this uses the .net framework.

Whilst I was using it the PC became very slow and I was greeted with a message window, sorry I can't remember the specifics. But it was something along the lines of Windows XP stability and it asked for my XP disc. Not having an XP disc at hand I chose to ignore it and clicked cancel.

Upon rebooting the machine, after the Windows XP Home splash it hangs on a black screen with nothing more than the mouse.

Does anyone know what the problem is? If I haven't gone into enough detail just ask and I'll see if I can clear anything up.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I would press the power button and the fan and the power lights come on but the screen doesn't turn on and then then it just shuts off completely. No error message or anything. It just repeats that automatically several times while the charger is plugged in until it just stays on but the screen remains off and keyboard commands are unresponsive. If the charger isn't plugged in then it just turns on then shuts off and stays off until I press the power button again.I've already taken apart the laptop and ensured everything is connected properly and also removed the battery and held the power button down to do a power cycle but still nada. Any help or suggestions would be greatly I appreciated it

Good day to one and all,

I have encountered a dilemma of sorts with windows 8.1 suddenly booting only to a blank screen.

Was testing some of the themes I had downloaded for windows 8.1 when I clicked on the theme "A different touch Alt" and all of a sudden windows went blank. I could feel the OS running though co when I pressed the power button, it turned off after the usual amount of time it normally takes to shutdown.

Ever since I try to start, it only shows up until the Windows logo (blue squares) with the spiraling dots and then just blanks to a black screen that is illuminated.

Like before it appears that the OS is running in the background cos th HDD activity light keeps flickering. When the mouse is moved it shows the white default cursor moving around with the blue "processing" ring coming on and off and then disappears. Comes back on when the mouse is moved.

Tried booting in safe mode but no difference it shows the windows logo and then blanks out.

Also tried restoring, but it goes through the whole restoring process (initializing, processing, finishing), and thn says that it was unable to restore and that no files have been modified on the PC due to an unspecified error (0x8 1000204). However that's when I noticed that the restore had failed scanning the file system on drive E:\ ! Windows was definitely on Drive C: . I rebooted to command prompt and was surprised that the drive letters seemed to have changed. My windows dri... Read more

I have still been unable to solve this issue? Has anyone please got any pointers?

After sorting out my problem installing multiple Hard Drives and getting past that I am now faced with another problem, which is that no screen is displayed on start-up to allow selecting other drives to boot from.

I can select other drives to boot from if I boot up into the default drive and select "Change PC Settings" but that is very slow and allows mistakes if one is tired.

I think the reason for the problem is because I installed all the drives on their own separately (took out the other drives) and they are now all installed properly except for this problem.

I only need to boot from the default drive when I need to do something with that particular drive or to boot from "Windows 7 Ultimate" I tried to fix the problem with Drive Freshen (I think its called) but that didn't work.

Is there a way to fix this problem and have the screen that offers to allow booting from another drive added to the default drive, without doing a total re-install please ?

On a multi boot system it is the first screen to display before booting the OS, and shows all the installed Drives in boxes with their names (labels) on, so that you can choose which Drive to boot from..

Many thanks for any help

Answer:After installation NO screen to allow booting from another

You could fix that with Download EasyBCD 2.2 you can ad any OS to the boot menu without resorting to BIOS changes.

Hi all,

I wanted to know if anyone could help with the below.

I currently have a Windows 10 laptop that was working without issues for a while, however after a restart the laptop appears to load windows but never get to the login screen, only show a blank screen with only a mouse icon visible.

I have tried various Windows supplied options with the following outputs:

1. Boot into safe mode (with and without network) - this again only loads to a blank screen with only mouse icon visible
2. Window reset - appears to get stuck on 8% - only to show an error saying reset could not happen, reverting changes (option to reset with files saved was chosen - as current files are required)
3. Start Up Repair - issue not resolved
4. System Restore and System Image Recovery - N/A as Windows cannot find previous image or restore point
5. Booted in Low-Resolution video - again, same issue is experienced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Windows 10 booting into blank screen with mouse cursor only

To add:

When the blank screen appears with cursor, it was noted that shortcut key for opening narrator worked and displayed the box fine. However the rest of the screen was black.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

I do have a R50 1830-6FU. Now it doesn´t boot, it gives the beep code long-short-short.As far as I could find out that it seems to be the graphic chip. The question is: can I replace it by my self or do I have to send it to Lenovo? How much will it cost roughly? The R50 is now about 4 years old, it used to be my former company PC (now I´ve got a T61). Thanks! Losi

Answer:R50 beeps 1 long and 2 shorts with a blank screen when booting

Hi losi,Welcome to the forum! The proceeding manual says the culprit can be either one of following:- 1. System board. 2. LCD assembly. 3. DIMM.http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-53169.htmlI suggest replacing the RAM first, if that doesn't solve the problem then try system board. Lenovo will charge a lot more than what the actual R50 costs so it's better to buy the board yourself and replace it with the help of above manual. On eBay, they go for around $100:- http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=r50+motherboard&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=r50+board&_...Hope it helps.

Hi

My Toshiba Tecra A11-113 with win 7 32 bit boots with a blank screen and mouse cursor visible.
I tried to boot under different startup options. Repair mode, safe mode, last working configuration
and msdos command only... all these bootup options give the same result.

I also tried with win 7 32 bit dvd, but same result.

I am able to access the C drive by booting with a linux key, so data is visible.

Can any one please give me a solution ?

Thanks

Answer:Tecra A11-113 - blank screen and mouse cursor while booting

What happens if you access the BIOS? Is BIOS menu on the screen visible?
Power up the unit and press F2 button.
This should allow you to access the BIOS.

If you will be able to access the BIOS and if everything will appear as usual, then the screen is OK and I think there is some problem with your Windows system installation.
Therefore booting from Toshiba Recovery disk should help you to solve this problem.

You said that you already tried to boot from Windows DVD disk? is this Toshiba Recovery disk? In my opinion you should use such disk to set the notebook back to factory settings.

Hi!
This is about my Windows 8.1 laptop not booting anymore. When i boot the laptop, i get the GRUB, because i installed kali linux (because 1, backup OS incase windows dies, like right now, and 2, because i was interested in linux and using those tools and "stuff", though nothing illegal, i assure you.) Anyway, linux boots up fine, but upon choosing the windows boot manager and waiting for the windows logo and spinning dots to go away, i am greeted by a blank screen. This happens in safe mode aswell. i can access the "advanced boot menu" screen via the f9 key, and i can access the UEFI settings too (F2 key). Prior to this Blank screen and being unable to boot, i was unable to use the internet, in chrome i just kept getting "ERR_Failed" whenever i tried to access the internet. So i tried to do a system restore, which did nothing at all, since it could access some files (saying it may be due to an antivirus). After a while (not sure of the timeframe), i got more errors, such as "class not registered" (i think) when trying to run programs like chrome. Other programs threw a "side by side config" error (i don't remember the exact error). I could only access basic windows programs like Explorer and basic cmd, admin cmd gave me an error too, though i cannot remember which one, it was one of the above one though. Trying "Ctrl-Alt-Del" gave me an error too, i can't remember which, but i think it looks like this: http://i.... Read more

Hi everyone, I've had a Lenovo Y510P with SLI 750m's for about 1 year and 3 months now. 2 weeks ago (around the time I upgraded to Windows 10). My laptop suddenly is unable to boot for the most part. When I press power, it hangs on the initial blank screen, with no logo pop-up. I have managed to get it to boot before, just simply by restarting over and over, but it's been 3 days and no luck now. It simply stays on a blank screen (no backlight), though the keyboard and power button light up. Here are the steps I've taken to troubleshoot:-> Removed battery, unplugged AC, performed "fleeting power removal" by holding the power button for 60 secs (have done this multiple times)-> Removed RAM, changed slots etc. When there is no RAM, the machine will continuously reboot-> Removed HDD, reseated-> Removed 2nd GPU. When the 2nd GPU is plugged in, the fan will try and spin every so often-> Unplugged connectors to wi-fi module-> Restarted many times-> Pressed the NOVO button, it simply brings it to the blank screen Any advice would be much appreciated. The laptop itself is in good condition, and has little physical ware. Unfortunately it's no longer under warranty, and I'm sure the cost of sending it in is quite high.

Can hear computer Tring to boot and keyboard lights come on. Have tried pressing all function keys to no avail. I'm away for a conference and have no tools to open up and remove battery. This happened yesterday but then when I randomly moved screen it came on, but problem reoccurring when I tried to boot up again. No amount of screen moving helping this time.  Has never happened before.  I had to put it through air port scanners yesterday during travel. Has never affected laptop before but I did read somewhere about a magnetic field perhaps affecting it but not sure what that means. Any help greatly appreciated as without it my presentation at this conference is screwed! Thanks! Hello,

Thanks for previous help; much appreciated.
In my 80's now, and this "stuff" doesn't get any easier.

Have a 2 yr old Dell Desktop. Typical setup, nothing fancy.
It's a:
XPS 8900
1 TB HD

Has always worked fine.

As I wrote, a few days ago an icon appeared on bottom bar that Dell wanted to download some updates.
To the best of what I recall, I did not click on this icon.
Apparently, it started to download by itself.

About half way thru, perhaps 15 minutes into the download (which appeared to be going normally),
the screen turned blank.
Nothing but nothing, I tried would get it going again.

So, I finally gave up and bit the bullet and did the complete Image Reset thing which finally came up.
Wiped out most everything, but I've been good about backups.
Lots of hours spent, but finally got it back to, apparently, working normally.

Last night, absolutely all by itself, it started another download update. Didn't say, but I think from MS.
Screen said will "take a long time," and not to turn off PC.
Again, seemed to be going normally, but after 15 minutes or so, screen totally blank again.
Nothing works; can't get out of blank screen.
Tried the F2, F3, and F8 on re-starts without any luck. Won't go into Safe Mode either.

Question: any idea what's going on ?

If I do another Image reset, I guess the absolute first thing I want to do is to Absolutely prevent any and all

Answer:My Booting Up Blank Screen Problem When It Goes Into An Auto-Update

Hi Bob. Unless you have Windows 10 Pro you can't stop all updates and even with Pro you can only delay.

F12 is not your BIOS settings it is a temporary or one time Boot selection. Unless you are booting a recovery drive, a repair disk or doing a clean install I would leave that key alone.

Sitting miles away I can't be absolutely sure what is happening but lets try a few simple things. Ideally you would do one and test so we can get to root cause.

First I would look through the icons in your systray, lower right and catalog them. Some might be hidden so click on the little up arrow to expose those. You are looking for some program named something like Dell Maintenance, or Dell Support, Dell Live. Basically we are looking for a program that is helping you keep your Dell up to date. If it is there you should be able to pick it out.

To disable it try opening it and seeing if it has settings, specially one that says something like start with Windows. If there are no options lets have a look in the Task Manager Start Up tab.

CRTL+ALT+DEL, > Task Manager, click on Startup tab. If tabs aren't showing, click on show more details lower left. We want to find that maintenance program and disable it. Please always note any changes you make on paper so you can back track.

This next step should also be done with the one above. That is, we are going to Disable Windows updating your drivers. Here is the tutorial. I would use option 4. Please book mark this tutorial so you can en... Read more

Hello,

I have two Windows 7 machines which are booting to a blank screen this evening. One is my desktop (custom AMD build in my signature) and one is my laptop (Samsung AMD). My desktop is duel booted with Xubuntu and that works fine. When I login to the desktop machine it goes to a blank screen with a mouse pointer that never goes way. The laptop shows a Windows desktop update window for like 10 minutes then it goes to a blank screen that never goes away (waited 30 minutes so far). I was able to login to the laptop using a different account but the main one has this issue as does the main account on my desktop. I am wondering if a windows update caused this? Has anyone ever seen this happen?

Answer:Windows 7 machines booting to blank screen this evening

A windows update is probably unhappy. Try doing last good known or safe mode. You can also try booting to windows repair and load system restore and going back to before it did the update. And yes it was probably an update. But that doesn't mean its at fault.

I got a new Equium A200-1VO laptop on friday as a very very late christmas present, and yesterday night (monday), i was playing football manager on it, with ITunes playing and deleting files off an old mp3 player. Everything was going fine when all of a sudden there was this click/clunking sound and the screen went black.

The laptop was plugged in at the time and so the connected to a/c light was on, so was power and the charging light, but it just stayed blank.

I then unplugged the charger and it appeared with the orange light signifying low battery. I Then removed the Computer game disk thinking it may be that and turned off the laptop manually. Now if i just push the power button it comes off theres a click, roughly where the disk drive is and it goes off, if i hold it in theres a click but it stays on, all the time the screen stays blank.

I Then turned it off and charged it up wondering if it was just low on battery and still nothing.
I left the laptop swtiched off overnight but in the morning the problems were still there. I even stuck the "product recovery" disk in but still no sign of life.

I am going to try and plug this moniter screen in and see if that is the problem so il hopefully be able to tell you soon. Oh also, one thing i can think of is that i was using it on my bed, is there a way it could have overheated? if so then wouldn't leaving it off overnight have helped/ solved this problem?

thanks in advanced!

Hi all,

I recently bought an ASUS S56CM notebook pre-loaded with Windows 8 x64 and a lot of bloatware.
So I decided to download a clean retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (X17-59465), create a bootable USB and do a clean install.

What I did:
Create a bootable USB
Enter BIOS (UEFI) enable "launch CSM", disable "secure boot" and set priority boot to the USB
Works fine, I entered windows 7 installation and did the following:
1) Shift+F10, enter command prompt
2) diskpart, list disk, select disk # (my HDD), clean, format MBR, create partition, format NTFS and successfully installed my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 into my newly formatted disk
3) It restarted and continue booting into the same USB
4) so I realize that I should change the boot priority to my HDD
5) I tired putting my HDD to first priority but it still boot to the installation USB
6) So I decided to restore default settings in BIOS and "save & exit" (my mistake)
7) It rebooted but nothing happens, literally.
8) there is power, but the screen is blank (not black, no light at all)
9) I've tried to search for solutions such as inserting bootable devices such as USB or my Installation DVD, the machine will sound (attempting to run) for a while but die down and a state of clam resumes.
10) I've also tried holding the power button for 60second when power is unplugged then plug in and press power button but it did not work as well.

I have Windows 7 Home edition on a HP dv4 series laptop. Couple of days back I was browsing through a website suddenly the the windows was shutdown. I assumed it was some virus work

When I try to restart windows it is taking me upto the HP boot options then I get a blank screen with a cursor at the top left corner.

The following did not work,
1) Booting via the recovery disk
2) Booting via recovery hard disk
3) I created a USB boot with Ubuntu and even the USB is not getting detected.

I dunno what happened to the PC whether its the work of a virus or bios issue. Please Help

Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)

Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.

Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more

I left it thinking that maybe it's still loading or installing for about 30 minutes and still nothing. So I turned it off and restarted and took me to the safe mode options.

I tried reinstalling again, maybe a bad first install but I still got the same result after. Anyone having or had the same problem before? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My friend's computer stopped working the other day. The problem: everytime the WindowsXP boot screen would appear and pass, the computer would restart. Same if I tried booting up in safe mode it would just restart after the drivers loaded. Since there wasn't anything important, I grabbed my XP Home disc and went to reinstall Windows.

Now, the computer boots up, loads the installation disc; however, at the point where the disc check screen pulls up (right before I can choose the partition to install XP on) the screen goes blank. The computer, hard drives and fans stay running but the screen is left blank.

I tried a few more times and waited at the blank screen as well and nothing. A couple times the partitions and list of available hard drives would pull up, but I would select one and the screen would black out yet again.

I'm completely stumped at what to do and what is wrong . It's not my computer (and I don't have an OS to check more detailed specs), but the specs I do know are:

Sony Vaio Desktop
Intel Pentium 4
WindowsXP Home SP2
1GB RAM

Some steps I have already done are replacing the hard drive to see if another drive would boot windows properly. The same problem happened (where the comp would just restart after the boot screen) and using the install disc, the screen still goes blank. Also, there haven't been any recent driver updates or changes to software.

I'm completely stumped, but any help would be appreciated.

First off... Your copy of Windows XP home will not work on another computer...Also to reinstall the operating system...You need to boot your computer from the CD and/orDVD ROM...With the Windows...operating system CD...inserted in the Drive.

Hi

I was wondering if you could help me. I have a Acer laptop that is currently running build 7068 (specs available at the side there for full info). Since build 7000 I have been doing update installs, which have worked find (save a few glitches here and there), and I wanted to do a clean install of build 7100. However, when i boot from CD or USB pen, as soon as the Windows Logo disappears, the mouse cursor appears for a second (against a black screen), and then all I get is a completely blank screen, no disc accesses, CD accesses, nothing.

If I do the install from within Windows (again a clean install), the files copy across okay, but as soon as it rebooots during expanding, I get the same again, a blank screen and nada!!!!

I'm not sure if it's the graphics card at fault, or what, but surely if the beta build had enough drivers, this should. Could anyone suggest anything that may help?

Thank you.

Answer:Blank Screen at start of installation

It sounds like you may have a corrupted image. You might try a different .iso or burn the one you have at a lower speed on a new DVD. Good luck.

Here is my problem with my A200-1AE (PSAECE) Notebook:
I downloaded the latest BIOS update from the Toshiba download drivers library to install Win XP since finally the drivers are realized. (Note the update clearly stated to run ONLY if you want to install XP on you NB).

So I unzipped the file and after hitting the .exe file it started updating the BIOS on its own without me giving the liberty to do so. Half way the N/B froze for about 20 minutes and as I didn?t know what else to do so I reset it.

Result? The NB does NOT boot. I press the power button, the Hard Drive icon flashes 2-3 times as well as the DVD drive, I get a blank screen and the power cord & power button icons constantly on. I removed the battery and the power cord for 48 hours hoping it will reset the BIOS on its own to no avail.

The BIOS battery is under the touchpad which means I have to disassemble the whole laptop and I am not ready to do so. I don?t know if on the motherboard there are BIOS reset jumpers and I need someone?s help as to what I should do. I am starting to think that things where MUCH easier back to when I just had a desktop PC.

THERE must be something I can do other that taking it to the service center and pay half the value of the laptop in repairs.... PLS HELP I?m desperate....

Answer:Blank screen & no booting after running BIOS update on Satellite A200-1AE

Hi there,

first of all: a notebook is not a desktop and such mobile computer does not have jumpers like a deskop computer. They surely have something to delete the BIOS but I am not so sure IF resetting the BIOS could help you.

I guess you will have to send your machine to a service center for repair because in such cases you will have no other option. Do you have still warranty on this machine?

Hi,

I have a laptop Satellite P300. On booting up vista the microsoft logo comes up and then when the POST screen should be showing me what the bios is checking the screen is blank.

It remains blank for 5 to 10 mins then the pointer appears then it finally goes to the desktop.
I suspect the bios is hanging on something but I can't see cos the screen is blank. I suspect there is a setting somewhere. I can enter the bios but can't find anything in there.

Also regards to the extremely slow boot, I have disabled nearly all the start up programs but it has made no difference.

Has anyone any ideas?
Thanks

Basically, when I start my laptop with the intel graphics mode, I get a blank screen right after the Windows startup logo. Going into the bios and changing to discrete only mode works fine. Uninstalling the intel drivers allows me to boot the intel chip with the default windows drivers, and the logical next step would be to simply reinstall them, however... Compounding the problem is that while serveral intel graphics driver installations are listed in the Lenovo support area, only one of them seems to actually contain the graphics drivers, with the rest just installing the Power Boost drivers for the processor, and even then I still get the black screen after installation. Worst off all, there seems to be no Intel video drivers on the restore partition. I'm truly at a loss here. I can live with only the high-power mode working, but I'd like to get this fixed.

Is there anything I can do about it or should I send my laptop back where I bought it?

Doesn't the Asus R540LJ laptop come with Windows 10 already installed and working? Or, let us know if the machine did not come with an installed Operating System.

My default settings for BIOS are as follow:

I am trying to install a fresh copy of windows xp on compaq presario v6000. The first screen of formatted the hard drive and setting up partitions work. Then it transfers the files just fine. Then it goes into the windows installation set up screens and goes blank. I see it saying setup is starting and then before the setup for installation screens come on the screen goes black.

I went as far as installing ubuntu and it worked just fine. When ubuntu came up it said it had to go into low resolution but once I hit okay everything worked fine. This makes me beleive the windows xp install is not using the right video drivers. Am I on the right track? If so how do I get the xp installation to use the right drivers?

Other things that I have done and not fix my issue are:
set bios to default
tried to boot into safe mode (I get all the lines of safe mode starting but when windows goes to open my screen goes black)
replaced the hard drive.
Format and install xp on new hard drive.
Even found a copy of vista that came with the pc and it did not work.

Help?

Computer specs;

Processor: i7 4790
Motherboard: Gigabyte z97-HD3
Graphics Card: Galaxy GTX 970-4G
HDD: Apacer Solid State Drive
RAM: 8GB

A brand new computer, as you can see good specs. It had windows 7 on it and I tried to install Windows 8 on it. The installation purpley-blue screen began, reached 100% and then the monitor went blank. The power supply was sound but the monitor couldn't find the computer it was plugged into.

I power the monitor on, it turns green and then the monitor goes to sleep outright.

I tried a second monitor with the same result.

I tried a different cable, same result. The monitors work when I plug them into my laptop (which also has Windows 8.1 installed). In fact the HDD also worked when plugged inside my laptop, I could see it at least (though the installation was incomplete and messed up the windows 7 installation to boot.).

I can't fathom what the problem is. This is all modern hardware that worked just fine with Windows 7 but not Windows 8? What can I do to solve this? The machine is under warranty but I seriously don't want wish to return it.

Any ideas on what the problem is, let me know.

I considered that it could be the BIOS set up? I may be able to enter the BIOS if I, again, attach the HDD into my laptop.

Thanks in advance to anyone that reads this.

The computer goes blank right after Windows starts up as it's supposed to go to the login screen, and the cursor was the only thing to appear. My answer to everything is to basically reinstall Windows 7 and start over, but after inserting the disc, begining the installation, and going through most of the motions....after Windows restarts again the screen goes black. Before I tried to reinstall Windows I was able to use the computer in Safe Mode, but after the reinstallation failed I can't reach safe mode. I can't seem to find a way to finish the installation.

I really need help. Thank you. I do apologize if this isn't the appropriate place for this post.

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so I hope I am doing everything correct.
I think you can see my system specs on my profile, but just in case I have a:

I'm attempting to do a clean install of Windows 7 home premium 64bit, the same OS I had on the computer since I bought it in 2010. Idk what happened but something got corrupted somewhere since it would not boot properly and a repair disc did not help at all. I took it upon myself to do a fresh clean reinstall. I deleted all partitions since I got an error telling my the system reserve was also corrupted. I made a new parition which automatically made the system reserve as well, formatted the new partition, then clicked next to install. First attempt, it went all night and I woke up with it frozen right before the "installing updates" stage. Tried it again today and it completed successfully and restarted on its own at the end. Since then, all it has given me after it boots up and goes past the bios screen is just a blank black screen. Not sure where I went wrong.

Ok, so. I was installing windows XP, everything went fine, That blue screen showed up, I did all the settings.. While it was formatting the drive, (i selected NTFS Quick) I went away from my screen for a few minutes to get a drink and a few other things.. I came back, it was a black screen. I thought, maybe something was loading. So I went away, did a few things, Checked on it AGAIN and still a black screen >.< I am pretty sure I did nothing wrong. I was installing this on a brand new hard drive I just got. It is a "Maxtor STM3160212A 160GB DiamondMax20 ATA 2MB Cache - OEM". I have recently used Driver Genius to update some drivers and had a power outage while installing the video card drivers. After the power was restored I could not boot normally (it would go blank after the loading screen goes away before the log on screen comes up.) So I boot into safe mode and install the drivers there, and then restart. It worked after about 12 tries.... Now, it will not load normally at all anymore.
While checking the system error logs, I find that (from 9/26/09 - 9/27/09) I am missing quite a few catalog files in the "system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}" directory. I also have many DCOM errors...

See "SysErrors.txt" in attachments
I have also ran chkdsk with many errors (I assume they are)

See "ChkDskOutput.txt" in attachments.

Here's another possible culprit... Leftover video card drivers.... While I thought that my nVidia card somehow fried when the power went out, I put my ATI card in and tried to install the drivers for it, but to no avail... Oddly enough, the only way I could get it to work was by manually installing the drivers. While doing an automated install, I received the error message "Severe: Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit."

What could be wrong???

My HP Pavilion notebook has an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics card. I have not found a Windows 8 driver for this card, but at least two older Vista drivers that I have tried will run the card.

But after installing the display driver the boot sequence proceeds normally up to the lock screen (where password information is entered) which then appears blank. There is not a way to get past the blank lock screen, and the only way out is to uninstall the display driver. After uninstalling, the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter takes over again, the lock screen appears, and is not a problem once more.

I don't think the driver is directly responsible for this, as it seems to function normally. But something causes a hang at that screen. Possibly this is where the installed driver should have started but it is late in starting, so nothing is displayed?

This is the third post I've made and around the 6th problem I've come across the past few days.

The problem I have now is when turning on my laptop it stays at the Dell logo for about 5 minutes before continuing to attempt to load windows, this is in UEFI mode. In legacy mode, it loads past the Dell logo in seconds, but this does not load windows.

I am trying to reinstall windows with the Dell windows 8 Home premium disk. When the disk finally loads, it just stays on a black screen, and I've left it for about an hour and it will not load.

I have tried using Hirens boot CD (USB) to load Mini windows xp, but that does exactly the same. I can load Linux from the usb but not windows. However, I have never used Linux so I cannot do anything in Linux to attempt to fix it, as I do not know what I'm doing inside Linux.

If someone could shine some light in this please let me know. It seems to be a UEFI problem.

Thanks in advance

I just a bought a new laptop yesterday, DELL Inspiron 15 7000 Series Model 7537, with windows 8 installed, I checked the laptop and surfed the internet a bit, I checked the windows 8.1 in store and it showed me that I have to update my windows first in order to download this 8.1 update, i decided to update the windows.
When i started the windows update, it showed me there were 112 updates there, i clicked on download the updates, but none of them seemed to work, however I searched around and found that I must turn off the metered connections limit download. However, the updates seemed to download and after downloading around 70 updates i decided to restart my laptop.
My laptop restarted with a dell logo, and right after that a blank screen, and after a while a cursor.
I have been restarting my laptop since yesterday and to no aid, a blank screen is showed and nothing else happens. I tried to enter BIOS setup to boot from the other D drive recovery, but I am unable to enter the BIOS setup.
I try to press F8, F12, F2, F10, to enter BIOS or atleast start the automatic windows recovery, but nothing seems to be working.
I spent a lot of my hard earned money to buy a new laptop with a new windows, and this is really frustrating, any help would be highly appreciated.

I'm using a Fuijtsu Siemens Scaleo P 2540 system.
Due to recent harddrive failure I got a new harddrive on which I installed Windows 7 Ultimate.
The installation was a big struggle, but after a few tries it looked like the OS was running.

But after installing the latest updates, AVG, iTunes and a restart or 4 it doesn't boot anymore.
Sometimes the BIOS doesn't even show the harddisk in the boot menu.
I got the DISK READ ERROR message a few times as well.
I did run chkdsk and it completed succesfully (removed a couple of corrupt indexes, no bad sectors).
Sometimes it does get to the point of showing the Windows logo and the STARTING WINDOWS. It doesn't freeze, but goes on for about 6 minutes and then reboots. Other times it doesn't load the logo and only displays STARTING WINDOWS. And if I try to open the REPAIR function, the operation quits with the message: Unexpected I/O error has occured.

Some of the errors above did occur during the installation progress (during the 1st or 2nd restart).

Mobo: MSI G31M MS-7379 v4.0
CPU: Q6600 2,4 gHz quad
RAM: 2x 2048 Mb 677 mHz ddr2

All the disc drives are SATA.

1) Would it help if I updated the BIOS software? How?
2) Could a new SATA-cable (no visual damage) solve this?
3) I've been struggling with this for a week now. Getting really sick too, but I really want to tackle this.
Is there something else I should look into?

THANK YOU !

Trying fix a laptop, she tried to install a camera but it went wrong and now when desktop appears, "found new hardware" shows in task bar then after about 10 seconds it shuts down and re-boots.

I can get into safe mode and it runs fine. Tried a system restore but it always says "unable to restore....."

Im pretty sure its the failed installation, is there a way to stop xp trying to find the hardware? I cant find the software to remove it.

Ive tried recovery panel, chkdsk, bootcfg, fixboot and fixmbr

Thanx

Answer:[SOLVED] Failed installation now laptop keeps re-booting

If you go into device manager (Start > Run > devmgmt.msc) do you see the camera? If you see it can you right click on it and then disable it?

Also if that doesn't work you can try:

Go to Start > Run > type "services.msc" w/o quotes. Find the "Shell Hardware Detection" service and disable it and reboot into normal mode. Then see if the balloon pops up again or not. If it works, try re-enabling the service and then reboot and see if everything works.

I want to install Windows 7 on an HP Pavillion Desktop which happens to have a
Sata Harddisk with an IDE DVDRW.
I set the boot Priority to the DVDRW then the Harddisk and placed the Windows disk on the dvd drive to boot from it.
But it is not booting from the CD as booting still goes to the Harddisk.
My understanding is that SATA takes First Priority.
Well in such a scenario what does one do in order to install Windows?
Please note both drives are detected in the BIOS

Thank you all for your advise

Answer:Solved: New Windows Installation Booting Issues

SATA doesn't take priority, I've installed Windows 7 numerous times from PATA/IDE drives with a SATA drive.

Are you sure the DVD drive works? Can it read a DVD properly? Also you mention CD, but Windows 7 comes on a DVD.

Also since this is an HP you can press ESC, F10, or F12 and choose a one time boot device rather than changing BIOS boot order.

Hi,

I'm trying to install a Windows 7 Profession 64 bit version over a Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit version.

I know this isn't possible without a clean install, but my problem is, the installation won't boot whatsoever.

Two days ago I installed a fresh copy of W7 32 bit over a vista 32 bit with a flash drive on a laptop with no problem, so I know how you make a bootable USB.

This time however, using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool didn't cut it for me as, even though it was prioritzed in BIOS, nothing would happen and W7 32 bit would just boot like normal.

So I tried to manually set up the bootable flash drive, which also didn't work.

After a lot of searching on google, I learned the problem might have something to do with the bootsector not able to be run on a 32 bit OS.

So, I found another guide: http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-t...able-usb-flash-memory-key-or-hard-disk-drive/

I used the W7 32 bit version I used on the laptop 2 days ago, and put the bootsector of that version on the flash drive.

Again, this didn't work as the computer would just boot windows 7 32 bit like usual (and again, I adjusted the priority in BIOS)

Now I got enough of trying the flash drive to work, I tried burning the ISO file on a DVD using Imgburn.

Burning the DVD went smoothly and I quickly had a DVD with the W7 64 bit installation files.

This however, didn't solve anything as (again, prioritzing the DVD) W7 would boot up as usual.

I thought I'd give Windows 10 a try in the virtual machine using VMWare player, but I'm just not having any luck with it. My host computer is a lenovo laptop with a Pentium T2390 dual core processor running Windows 7 x64, attempting to run Windows 10 x86 in VMWare player (apparently my cpu is incompatible with virtualization of 64 bit operating systems). When I boot from the ISO, I see the blue windows "pane" for a few moments, but right before the little round dots are supposed to appear underneath it, I get:

"Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button.
Error code: 0x0000005D
Parameters:
0x3060F0D
0x756E6547
0x6V65746E"

Just to see what would happen, I tried a 32 bit Windows 8 ISO as well and got the same exact thing (yes, I do have "Windows 8" selected as the guest operating system inside of VMWare player, and I have tried other options as well just to see what would happen, they all do the same thing). A Windows 7 (or earlier) 32 bit installer iso will boot up just fine. I have "Burned" this iso to a USB drive and successfully booted the Windows 10 x86 installer on two computers (including the one on which it refuses to work in a VM), so I know that the iso is good and that the computer should be compatible (I did give the bios setup a quick run down to make sure there weren't any virtualization settings that might conflict with what I'm trying to do as well and didn't see any).

Any ideas why it won't work?

Answer:[SOLVED] VMWare Player: Error 0x5D when booting from installation media

Ah Hah! I answered my own question. Apparently the problem was that even though my processor supports DEP (or "No Execute"/"Execute Disable"), it is disabled in BIOS by default. The catch is that because this was a "value line" computer, there is no option in the BIOS/setup screen to enable this.

The key to getting things to work was following the directions in this thread over on the lenovo forums and use SYMCMOS to change the settings. Here's a step-by-step for anyone else who might happen to be stuck in this boat with a Lenovo N200 or similar laptop:

1. Use Rufus to create a bootable USB drive of FreeDOS.
2. Download Symcmos and place it on the root of the newly created USB drive.
3. Download a DOS text editor. I used "edit" (simply open the ZIP file and extract EDIT.exe to the root of the USB drive).
4. Boot from the USB drive and use the command "Symcmos -?" to see all the commands and their usage.
5. Run "Symcmos -Lsettings.txt" to export all the current settings to a text file called "settings.txt".
6. Type "edit settings.txt" to open the exported file and see all the things that can be changed. The Number on the left in parentheses identifies the setting and the number on the right in brackets configures the settings. For example, The number accompanying "(0267)" will be "[0001]", which means, "disable D.E.P.". Remember that these will be differe... Read more

Hi,

i'm having to boot into windows xp. on power up sytem goes through the windows xp splash screen (with progress bar) and then instead of login prompt it goes just into the blue screen with moveable mouse pointer arrow.

issue seems to be similar to:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/868562-solved-windows-xp-pro-startup.html
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/868463-startup-problem.html
but recommended solutions didn't help so far.

symptoms just before issue - was not able to run use some system features - utility to turn off the display, utility to bring up battery info - everything was working fine before this

what i've tried:
boot to Last Known Good Configuration - resulting in the same blue screen

boot to Safe Mode / Safe Mode with networking / Safe Mode with comman prompt - resulting in blank (black) screen with "Safe Mode" in the corners and moveable mouse

test the hardware (hard drive / memory etc.) via build in PC Doctor - all seems to be working
i am able to use bootable XP CD from other machine to get into Recovery Console
i am able to boot to simple live XP using BartPE-XPE usb key and access the hard drive

could you please help me to find solution to this issue
thank you in advance
krajicek

When my W500 is on battery power and idle for 3 minutes the screen will flicker once then when I press a key it will blank briefly again before I can continue using the system. this drove me crazy for over a year, but I finally found the answer: Once again (I am a long time thinkpad user) Lenovo has shot their own foot.  To save battery power the default setting is to adjust the refresh rate to 50Hz after three minutes idle. If you are a writer, nothing is more irksome than having to wait for your screen to blank everytime you go back to type! go to:  Control Panel -> Power Options Select Power Manager tab then click "Launch Power Manager" In the "Power Manager" click the "Power Schemes" tabthen press the "edit" button to edit the currently selected scheme (or whichever one you want to remove flicker from)Press the "Next" buttonthen click "Lower display refresh rate" under battery settings and select "NEVER"  Ugh.    All of the Wizards that Lenovo adds for managing desktop schemes, backups, etc. are just buggy.the bios is buggy too, screen blank on reboot, resolution resizing when switching locations. All the way around, Lenovo starts with a solid peice of hardware, and proceeds to destroy its robustness, with poorly executed features.      (Not that you are reading this Lenovo, but there is a lesson in this!) anyway, I hope this helps some other poor souls out there! --dan...
