Solved: Driver problem for USB/RS232

Question: Solved: Driver problem for USB/RS232

Hello Techguy
I have a USB to RS232 converter which came with a driver disk. I can load the driver in and everything seems to load OK. However, when I then plug in the converter, it can not find the driver.

What it seems to be looking for is a driver called "USB2.0-SER!". However, the device seems to be a Prolific chip device and I would have expected to see it looking for something like "PL2303" or similar. I searched the computer for a driver with this name but no luck.

I went to the Prolific website and downloaded their driver but that didn't work any better.

I know these devices work as I have seen them working on other computers. How do I get it going?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have purchased a usb to serial adapter but the drivers are not functional.

Every time I plug the cable inside my computer i get a USB device not recognized message. Under device management > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Unknown Device.

The drivers that i have is called "PL-2303 Driver Installer". Even after installing this driver, I still have no luck. I know it is possible to update the driver but the driver format would have to be in a .INF file. In this case the driver is a .exe file so i have no idea what to do.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated also the drivers are available @ http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If the device is functional and installed, it should be under the COM ports in device manager but like i said before it is not and is listed as "Unknown Device".

After several attempts at trying different driver versions, no drivers seem to load now.

These drivers are for a Prolific PL2303 USB to RS232 converter - although I did not buy the device from that company. The drivers used to install easily and I actually had one that partially worked.

At one point, I went to the Windows/System32 and manually deleted all the files and "packages" for those drivers. This likely screwed everything up and I don't know how to recover. I have the option of doing a full system recovery, but it will take days of work to arrive back at the current configuration.

After several attempts to install and uninstall all these drivers again, nothing seems to work. When I plug in the device, Vista looks for the driver in Windows Update and of course finds none. In Device Manager (DM), the annotation for the Port is Unknown device. When I try to manually install the driver through the DM, it fails. The code is sometimes 1 and other times 19.

System Info says I'm running Vista Home Premiun X86-based PC, but the sticker on the laptop says Athlon 64 X2 dual-core (Acer Aspire 4530).

Any fixes?

I b ought one of these adapters off eBay so I could connect my GPS to my computer via USB, my old cable was the serial port. Anyhow, the seller told me it would work with Vista but she did not tell me it wouldn't work with Vista Premium. When I connect the device it tries to find the drivers but is unable to do so...does anyone know where I can get the right driver? The CD that came with the cable is worthless. Thanks

Question: RS232 problem

This is for the really old hands...

Got this Seiko labelprinter on Com4 (hispeed pci serial card).
My mobo is Asus P5Q3 wifi-ap deluxe.
I am always on a hell of a ride before I get this to work, these are the options shown in device mgr.:
bps 9600...115200 (several tried)
databits 8
parity none
stop bits 1
flow control none/hardware/xon-xoff (think hardware was the control of choice when it at at last worked for prior W7 installs: Beta, RC, W7)
Com 4

Msg "printer communication error".
Only possible setting on the printer is the com port.

Now I can try for days changing this and that and maybe as before it starts to work "just like that", but it is annoying: I had a crash and reinstalled W7 Ultimate.

W7 gives me a choice of two universal drivers, V8 and V10, tried to change to V8 but that doesn't change anything.

Anyone?

Answer:RS232 problem

Normally you don't need to change settings on the port itself. I would look towards a driver issue here (check for drivers for the printer itself that are comparable with W7)

Hi
i bought a cheap usb to rs232 cable of ebay for £2 with a driver disc.

When i connect usb to port the wizard takes over and asks to install disc but then it will not install .
Have downloaded different drivers but it still wont work, drivers are on desktop i think
thought cable was not working so ordered another but same problem.
Am i doing something wrong?

Answer:usb to rs232 problem?

Some manufacturers of converters like this require you to install the driver software before connecting the converter to the computer. I would suggest going into device manager and uninstalling the converter, restart the computer. Hopefully on the driver disk there is a "setup" or "install" utility that can be executed, run this install and after it is done connect the converter to the USB port on the computer and let the New Hardware Wizard do its thing. If this doesn't fix the problem try a different vendors converter.

I bought a hand held scanner which had a female 9 pin connector. My laptop only had a 15 pin rs232 connector. As I had spare usb ports I got a USB cable that had a male 9 pin attachment at one end. I also downloaded some drivers for HL-340. When the cable is attached it shows up as com4 usb-serial ch340 usb2.0-ser!. When I run the software associated with the scanner, a light on it flashes, but nothing else happens.Does anyone have any idea if I am using the combination of cables etc?

Answer:Rs232 to USB cable problem

If the port on the Laptop is an RS232 Serial port, are you sure it isn't 25-pin male? You should be able to get a 25-pin female to 9-pin male RS232 Serial Cable to connect the laptop and scanner directly. Have a look at this page click here

Hello All,

As a surveyor, I'm trying to slowly solve all the glitches on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

1. Mouse

I often visit this NSW government site SIX Maps

When navigating the map, you use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out and hold down the left mouse button to pan.

In my new windows 8.1 laptop, the scroll and pan functions won't work.

Iv'e tried 4 different mice and none of them work but they all work on my old XP laptop.

I've also tried 2 browsers (Chrome and IE)

I have also been in touch with the NSW goverment support team to no avail.

Looking in control panel, I couldn't recognise anything that would help.

Does anyone have any ideas?
2. USB to RS232 serial port cable replicator

This cable is used to download/upload information to the survey instrument. It worked fine on Windows XP, but will not work on Windows 8.1. It may be something to do with the port configuration.

Please note that the software is very old and I had to create a virtual XP machine using VMWARE to run it. (As well as some other obsolete software such as XTGOLD and Q.EXE! Any one remember these? I've yet to come across any file editing program to equal Q.EXE)

Hopefully someone will have some ideas otherwise I'll have to go back to the manufacturer and they'll charge more than I paid for the computer!!!

Thanks in advance for your help,

Michael

Answer:Problem with mouse and USB to RS232 cable

Well, I tried the link you provided and I was able to scroll using IE, Logitech Mouse, and Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit). However, when I first accessed the site, it said that their site would work better with FireFox or Chrome. I have Chrome installed but did not try it.

USB to RS232, which end connects where? Does the USB end connect to the computer or the survey equipment? When running your XP, does it provide an error when you try to connect upload/download data? I would think that your VMWARE and XP will be able to handle everything, but you will need to play with port settings to have everything configured the way it was before. For example, my wife's computer is Windows 8.1 Pro, and I have her run VMWARE and Windows XP so she can use the embroidery module for her sewing machine. The one thing you have to do is to make sure that when you start the VM machine, you must tell the VM machine to use anything plugged into the USB ports to be used in the XP and not the Host machine.

Anyway, don't give up yet and keep poking around you'll find a solution.

So there I was installing my Cd burner, and what do you know, It worked!
(That was not the problem yet)
But after a day, there was a little tiny problem on the recording, so I was play the IDE connector, plug it here and there. That did not solve my problem, so I turned my PC back on, and here come the problem. PC won't start, I have to disconnect the secondary IDE connector, to make window start. (I don't know why)
The secondary IDE master is connected to the CD-burner, and nothing to the slave.
Window started, to make things worst, The primary slave can't be detect, the slave is connected to the Cd-rom Driver. I looked in to my computer, I only saw the C driver,
both D driver (Cd rom)and E driver (burner)are missing, How could I recover them?
PLZ HELP!!

And I am sure that everything was set the way it was, the way it worked before. I am also sure none of the IDE plug was pluged up side down.

Question: RS232 on TV

RS232 on TV and Freeview Sat box. What is this serial port for?

Answer:RS232 on TV

Dunno about the TV. But my Humax Freeview STB has serial connection which can be used for uploading firmware upgrades from PC (after first downloading from Internet). Although the upgrades are available over the air, they are available sooner off the Internet. For this to work, one requires (for my box) what is known as a Null Modem Cable (and, of course, a serial connection on your PC). Cables avaialble on ebay, maplin etc.If you haven't got a serial connection on your PC, you can get a USB to serial adapter. It should all be described in your manual.Maybe the TV can take firmware upgrades in a similar way.

Question: USB - RS232

On my old pc i used a belkin ups with their bulldog software. The ups connected to the pc via a serial cable and all worked very well.So I buys a new pc and realise that it doesn't have a serial port. So I get a USB- RS232 cable (serial connector one end to connect to the ups and a USB conector the other end).I installed the drivers from the disk that came wit the usb/serail cable but the ups is not detected. Interestingly if I go into device manager, after installing the driver, and expand the tree so that i can see the driver one minute its there the next the device manager tree closes then opens and the driver disappears then it re-appears!My operating system is win xp home sp2.

Answer:USB - RS232

TomGI've used usb-serial converters, not all with the same degree of success. In most cases however, a reboot seemed to cure most ails, and sometimes only with the usb converter connected before boot up. Not a lot offer, but might be worth a try if you haven't already...

Question: No RS232 support

First, I appologize for this being so long-----I have a laptop I was given to use at work that is dual booted into Windows 98 and XP Professional. The Windows 98 is being used for the DOS architecture only. It is not a full operating system setup. I use this DOS for operating a data acquisition machine. However, this new laptop does not have an RS232 port for the DB9 adapter cable that is on the data machine. What I am trying to do is to use a USB conversion cable as this laptop has many USB ports. I know I need a USB driver for this to work. I went to the adapter's webpage and downloaded the driver for Win98 (as there is no driver support for DOS). Here is my dilemna: being that Win98 is not a full operating system, the driver will not load. Is there some way I can manually place the driver in config.sys and autoexec.bat in the DOS architecture. I have tried many configurations that did not work. Unfortunately this data system has to run in DOS only.

Answer:No RS232 support

No.It would have to be a driver written specifically for DOS to work properly.

Question: RS232 vs. Parallel

While working on a larger problem I found I was not quite sure of the port and cableling names. Is DB-25 RS232 the same as a Parallel port? Also, What is RS422 and RS485.

I know that DB-9 is RS232 and a serial port, so I assume that DB-25 RS232 is simiar to a serial port but I think I may be getting it mixed up with a standard Parallel port as well.

I had found one site but it was too technical for what I need to know. I just want to know an example of it's purpose and what type of connecter they use.

If someone could straighten me out on all this it would help me a lot.

[in case your wondering about the larger problem...it involves Punch Press machines, controls, and a BTR board. It seems most BTR's use a serial (DB9 RS232 connection) but ours uses what I am calling the parallel port]

How do I determine if the USB port is actually getting data to/from the system's COM port?

Some info:
- I have Vista Home Premium
- I purchased a Generic USB to RS232 adapter (from China) based on a PL2303 chip.
- The driver that came with the adapter seems to have installed properly.
- I have RealTerm installed.
- I jumpered Tx to Rx plus other pins on the male DB9 connector.
- I sought help from Prolific (re PL2303), but found nothing helpful.

But I don't know how to look for data passing through the adapter. What I type on the keyboard does not show up on the RealTerm screen.
I've worked with RS232 for years, and know about the signal-type on the USB port.
But now I am stumped, and about to cut the vinyl covers of the adapter.

Hi allI am thinking of buying a new lap-top (nothing fancy) but I note that none seem to have an RS232 port any more.I MUST have RS232 because one use of the laptop would be in communicating with all sorts of strange devices that use RS232 (using all sorts of software).I know that USB to RS232 converters exist BUT now to the question:One piece of software I use is Hyperterminal and it "looks" for ports (eg RS232), but as far as I can tell, doesn't see USB (my son's laptop only has USB, and Hyperterminal only comes up with TCP, modem and COM4 (IIRC) which is the infra-red port). And all the other software (i.e. other than Hyperterminal) just seems to find COM1 and then works. Thus, does anyone know how all these RS232 bits of software could find the "port" via USB? Would the USB to RS232 converter cable have software that turns USB into COM1?Has anyone used stuff like Hyperterminal via USB?Thanks for any help.Skeletal

Hello,I've got a plotter (well, it's a vinyl cutter), which is serial and according to the manual the pin-outs are as follow. It looks to be as if they put '1' for RTS when really they meant '7'. However, that aside, is this a standard straight through cable because TX/RX are not crossed but I thought if it were straight through then 4/6 and 7/8 wouldn't be linked?I'd rather just buy a cable, but this layout is confusing me Thanks for any help in letting me know about this layout.

Early serial connector layouts  were defined by the computer maker.  If that was they way they did it, that was the way it worked. Answer:UPS USB-to-RS232 Converter and Windows 7

The UPS doesn't have to be connected to the PC via USB or serial to protect it so you can use it as is.

Buy it will likely work for management with a USB to Serial adapter, Windows 7 has built in support for many APC UPS's out of the box. You may also find newer APC software for your model on the APX website.

Since installing SP3 to my Windows XP Pro system my RS232 serial port no longer works. I have a Hyperpen tablet that has an RS232 connection so it no longer functions. Is there a converter that I can attach to the male RS232 so I can connect via a USB port? I have seen a USB 2.0 to RSB (male) serial adapter dongle but that is of no use. I'd appreciate any suggestions towards resolving this.

Answer:RS232 serial port not working

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it is working there , or if there any conflicts . It won't have just broken , it must be a software problem as it occurred as you loaded SP3 , it might just need reconfiguring , what does the tablet need in terms of port speed etc. , data bits , flow control etc. ? Here is the deal. Where I work we have a ticketmaster application that uses a seperate RS232 network. This means special lines that run to a special little ticketmaster box in my switch room. Needless to say it is a royal PITA when we have to move these computers connected to this special network.

So to fix this I was hoping there were some kind of RS232 to ether net adapters out there. I know they exist, but I think the solution I need is special. i need an Adapter on the PC side that talks to an adapter on the switch side. So basically the flow would go like this:

COM Port --> Convertor Box --> Ethernet --> Converter Box --> Com Port on Special Box

Anyone have any suggestions?

Dear Friends;
We have many software installed in Laptop having WXP for trouble shooting purpose at machines. Communication of many devices is done through RS232. Some time it happen that a we fail to communicate with a device while everything is ok because some other software has already captured RS232 port of Laptop and it is hard for me to find out which software has done that.
Yesterday, after making communication with a PC via two soft wares, I tried to hibernate the PC but it failed to Hibernate as Com port was busy/captured while all the programs were closed. Is there any way to know which program has captured the Com port?

Answer:How do we know which program captured RS232 port??

I have used Portmon with XP 32 bit: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896644.aspx
I am not aware of an equivalent utility though for 64 bit XP.

I have a need for an RS232 port probably PCI, but I see such a wide diversity of prices. Which should I choose? Some have a UART and some do not. Do I need a UART? Thanks, Jim

P.S. I'll be using it with ham radio software called Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) and a ham radio transceiver Yaesu FT-950

Answer:Adding an RS232 PCI port to my desktop

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

I have a set of scales that outputs data on rs232. I need to read the data (weight in grams)multiply by a price per gram and output to a rs232 LCD display. Is there an easy way to do this. the scales constantly output and the price per gram has to be adjustable

Answer:RS232 data converter and output

Easy is a relative term. Most scales like that are used in some company or way that demands some software in order to be sold. Look at the makers web site for how they expect you to use the product. We still have many running a DOS app.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

I have a CyberPower USB to RS232 adapter. From the research I have done this should create a Com Port in my "Device Manager" so that programs
are then able to use it. I have researched this specific device and there are apparently problems with how it works on WIndows 8.1 but I have not been able to find a solution. The driver for the device was installed by WIndows plug-and-play controls. It decided
that the "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" driver version 6.3.9600.16384 was appropriate, however there is no Com Port in the "Device Manager" and instead a "USB Input Device" appears corresponding to the adapter each time
it is plugged in. Under the "Devices and Printers" the "Unspecified" device "CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS" shows up.

When I attempt to use drivers from a different source (the manufacturer of the USB to RS232 adapter), the plug-and-play ignore the new drivers and use the ones from above.

How can I get the Com Port created so that I can use the adapter properly?

Is there a way to circumvent the plug-and-play and use the driver from the manufacturer?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS - not creating Com Port

Hi,
Regarding current situation, let?s try to manually install the driver by following these steps:

Device manager -> Right click the device and choose update driver -> Browser my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device driver? -> Have disk -> choose the driver manually to install.

Then let me know whether this device can work fine.
For further troubleshooting, please post back the image for descript more detailed about your issue.

But after installing over 20 more Win updates, when rebooted I get the Blue Screen : STOP: 0x000000EA. Specifying that nv4-disp is in an infinite loop.
I've found suggested solutions that tell me to uninstall & reinstall the nv4-disp driver, but since it worked well until the updates I'm thinking that the problem is with one of those updates.
Anybody got any thoughts on this??

On a box running Server 2003 the application needs to talk out a serial port to an OPTO-22 I/O system. The Optoscan program from the manufacturer works just fine. Our application (which has been used many times before successfully) is not sending or receiving message. It appears that another application has grabbed the port.

Does anyone know how to identify which program is controlling a serial port?

Thanks

Answer:Identify program controlling rs232 port

Portmon is a utility that should be able to tell you the name of the process that is accessing the port: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/portmon.mspx

I use it at work as a RS-232/RS-422 protocol analyzer.

Hi - here's an idiot question for you. I need to know whether or not my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200) has something called an RS232 serial port. I think it probably doesn't, as I couldn't find it mentioned in System Information. But I'd like to know for sure before I fork out £30 for a USB adapter, which is what I'm told I'll need if there is no RS232 port. It's needed for a programme called DesignaKnit 7 - details of which can be found at http://www.softbyte.co.uk/dk7.htm, if anyone is interested. So, can anyone tell me how to find out for certain whether or not I have this port? Thanks v much, Helen

Answer:Do I have an RS232 serial port for cable link?

You do not have an RS-232 port on that laptop. Note that the site in question has specific recommendations for the RS-232 <-> USB link device, and I'd pick one of their recommendations: http://www.softbyte.co.uk/usb_conv.htm

Hi;

We have a slitter scorer machine in which tools are placed via servo motors. Servo motor is controlled with servo drive and each servo drive is sent the values of a set of parameters to set a job. The main control system is DOS based which sends the values of parameters to all drives according to job. The data flowing is as MS DOS_RS232 port >>> RS232 to 485 converter >>> parallel connection to all servo Com ports. I want to monitor the data following from MS DOS to drives for which I have arranged another RS232 to 485 converter and connected a wire from TX+ terminal of 1st Comm module to the TX- terminal of 2nd Comm module. If I enable the hyper terminal, I see the data following but un-understandable format.

The format of data following from MSDOS PC to drives is like "7E-BF-02-04-3C-00" in ASCII format. So to read it I downloaded MS “PortMon” software which is used to monitor data following via RS232 port. I have windows XP and when I run the software, “Not Connected” is shown on the top bar. Please help how to make it “Connect” to capture the data. Or if anyone has any other idea to capture the data following, please assist.

Answer:How to capture the data following via RS232 in ASCII format.

If someone guide me about PortMon that how to make it "Connected" it would be enough for me. This time when i run PortMon, "Not Connected" displays at the top write corner.

Hi, I have been trying to remove some stuff from my computer due to it being slow and by mistake I have removed a graphics driver update that I have recently installed since it was fine with the old driver. The computer has started slowing down since I have installed the updated driver so I thougth that if I remove it, it will speed up again. In the process I think all the drivers (or most of them) regarding graphics have been removed since the colors got distorted and only two settings under properties ->Settings ->Colors are either:

16 Colors (which makes the colors distorted) or
2 Colors (which makes the whole thing black and white).

Does anyone have any ideas where I can upgrade this stuff. If you need to know any more details ask and I'll provide them since I'm stuck.

The only difference is the picture had the logo on the front of the card and mine doesnt. Anyways it said ZINITEL. I just reinstalled Windows and for some reason, it's not recognizing my Marvell Gigabit LAN on the mobo. I can't get on the Internet because of it, so I can't have it search for drivers on the Internet when I try to fix the problem. I have gone into the device manager, and the ethernet controller shows up with the yellow question mark, but when I try to reintsall the driver, I've had no luck. I've looked on the CD that came with my mobo, but I can;t find anything specific to the Marvell. I've aLso tried downloading the Marvell driver from their Web site (among other places) but they never say where to put the driver, and when I have the reintsall function search wherever I've downloaded the driver, it just passes right over it.

In short, I need to find someway to reinstall the Marvell driver, but the drivers I've found are "system file" types and nothing I can just double click on and install. And the reinstall function seems pretty useless at this point, as does the CD that came with the mobo, which had LAN drivers, but they're stuff like LeadTek and, once installed, don't seem to have any effect.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello friends,

Tonight I was trying to update my Nvidea drivers.I think the latest is 180.02 ? I uninstalled the old drivers 1st. Then installed the new drivers and rebooted.
That is where the problems began.I tried to then go into the Nvidea control panel and enable SLI. I would click apply and then it would uncheck it and revert to 'Disable'. Then startup monitor asked me if I wanted Ntune to launch at startup. I kept saying NO. But it still would not let me enable SLI. So one I hit YES, launch Ntune @ start up.

Upon the next startup, the desktop would load then tthe screen would go eother blue or white ( current state)

>SO I thought I would go into SAFE MODE and disable Ntune, or whetever via MSCONFIG.
BUT I CAN'T ENTER SAFE MODE !<

I try F8 repeatedly at re-boot, but I just get the BOOT MENU. I can't even make a selection in that menu. The arrows I push do nothing to move my choices on the screen.

HOW can I enter safe mode another way ? How can I get into MSCONFIG without my GPU freaking out ?

Please help.

Thanks for reading..

>>This problem is on PC#2 ( below) <<

Answer:Solved: Nvidea Driver Problem

*UPDATE*

I was finally able to get into SAFEMODE !
First I went into the BIOS and made sure I enabled ALL USB devices I could. Maybe my USB keyboard was getting 'lost' during the POST.
So I hit F* and got to the BOOT menu. After making a selection I was able to hit F8 again.
THIS then got me into the SAFEMODE.

From there I disabled Ntune from MSCONFIG. Then I uninstalled ALL the video drivers.

I'll keep you informed as to the progress.....

Sometimes this is fixed by restarting whatever program I was using at the time it started, but sometimes it fixes itself over time, like 2-3 minutes or by restarting my computer.

What is causing this problem and how the hell do I fix it?

I know it's not a installation problem, because this has always happened to me with this headset and audio card.

my windows 98 first edition Laptop works fine but the Usb Fails to work,
ON device manager it says NTKERN.VXD Device driver(S) could not be Found

Answer:Solved: Windows 98 Usb Driver Problem

Googling Win98 USB Drivers brought up a huge list The largest was here...

http://www.usb-drivers.com/

The problem to remember is that in Windows 98, you had to install all devices that wanted to use the USBs. It wasn't until Me and XP (and to some extent, 98SE) that the plug-and-play feature they have today really came into being one hundred percent.

Running Windows XP: On every boot-up, system hangs and I get message: "Devices or applications disabled. DirectCD will cause Windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from loading. Click here for more details." Clicking "here" allows bootup to proceed and leads me to Roxio website to get a new updated driver for DirectCD but endless searching there is fruitless. I'd like to remove the incompatible driver(s) but cannot identify or locate them to delete them. I need advice on how to remove the offending driver(s). It has been suggested I go to control panel, add-remove programs, and remove EasyCD or DirectCD. Neither appears there so this won't work.

Answer:Solved: DirectCD driver problem

For a quick fix you can remove it from the startup, but it wont fix it, it will simply bypass it.

You need to remove Roxio's software. This is usually bundled with DVD burning or CD-Burning ROMS and it is not required because windows xp has a nice burning software installed (ironically built by the same company ROXIO)

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall EASYCD or DirectCD.

My wife's aunt just got a new pc and gave us her old one (XP) minus her monitor which was broken.

When I tried to hook it up, I get the Dell logo screen then the XP screen then the computer goes black and doesn't load (or does load but I can't see it).

The computer boots ok in Safe Mode and VGA Mode which leads me to believe it's a monitor driver problem.

Does anyone know how to fix it ?
I don't have the installation cd's for this pc or internet access for it.
I do have internet access for my other pc if I need to download a driver.

Hi.
I have just tried to install HalfLife 2 on my PC, it installed okay (i think) but during the installation it told me that my game driver was out of date and to update it, it then transferred me to the NVIDIA site and gave me an option to download what i assume was the right and updated version, before i commenced downloading it told me to uninstall any old/previous versions, which i did and then commenced to download the new version, the one i was attempting to download was called NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200 while it was downloading i got a warning that it was not verified by microsoft and to abort the download which i did but now i have no driver and i am now confused on which driver i should have and how to download the legitimate one.
Also since all this has happened, don't know if it is coincidence but when i scroll down a page the page goes down in waves, for want of a better word, I have tried to open the halflife game icon on my desktop but it will not open, i assume it is because of the driver, can anybody help!!!!!.
I have put a Hijackthis log on this page to see if that helps.

Hello,
Not sure if this is the proper thread to post this in, but here's my problem.
Running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a custom laptop.
So, basically I was having problems with my video drivers and uninstalled them. (Ati Radeon 9600/9700 Series) I had the windows default (VGA drivers?) running but somehow I disabled them. So what I have now is the computer boots up properly but after the Windows splash screen loads, I have a completely black screen. I can hear the windows startup sounds, so I know Windows is loading and the systems running, but with no video drivers running, I obviously can't see anything. Tried running from safemode but seems to "lock up". Tried VGA mode, but the same blank screen/windows loading thing happends.

Alas, since its a friends old laptop, I do not have the original windows CD or drivers for the computer.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I tried to download the driver from Biostars site - but there is no driver to download as PCI or PCI related . currently I have installed Video + audio + SMBus drivers. I am planning to add a PCI sound card into my system coz my onboard sound is damaged due to short circuit. The one and only thing I want to know is , if I install a new PCI card ( sound card) into my system -does it will work??? without that driver??? only this "other devices" is with yellow question mark ! help me friends . Today I attempted to burn some files to disk and my burning program reported to me that I didn't have a burner installed. Upon further investigation I discovered that the LiteOn CD/DVD burner I had been using to burn DVD's yesterday had a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. After clicking the properties I read that my CD/DVD burners driver was either not installed or corrupt. My solution was to click uninstall and reboot the computer. After booting, it attempted to install the driver but the installation failed giving me a message to contact LiteOn to get the device installed. All that LiteOn lists on their site is firmware updates and no drivers. I'm assuming the driver is on my Vista installation disk but it doesn't do me any good since I can't use the drive. By the way, the drive powers up without any problems but I need a driver for it. Can anyone help me out? If it matters, my device is a LiteOn Shw-160P6S ATA CD/DVD burner.

I have an old Gateway running Windows XP. I reinstalled Windows and now cannot connect to the Internet with my cable modem. The Connection Status shows connected with the time and a speed of 444.0 MPS, but there is no activity and the internet won't connect. The driver date is 7/1/2001. I suspect I need to update the driver, but can't connect to the internet to do it. Help.
