Is there a way to turn on an external harddrive from the computer?

Question: Is there a way to turn on an external harddrive from the computer?

Hey people, i was wondering, is there a way to turn on an external harddrive straight from the computer? Like is there a program that when is opened, will turn on the harddive? Because i am trying to find a way to remotely turn on my harddirve while im on the go. That way, i can use my mobile device to play the media that is on my harddrive.

Preferred Solution: Is there a way to turn on an external harddrive from the computer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

hi,
I connected my WD external drive to my computer, the blue circle light is on but my computer couldn't detect it.
Sometimes my computer will make a "don-dong" sound and the signal "new hardware was found" will appear, but in a second or two another signal which saids something like "the new hardware might not run properly".
(the blue light is on in the whole process)

could any of you tell me what might go wrong and all the solution you can think of so that i could try to solve it?

Answer:WD external harddrive cant detected by my computer

Hello,

Did you format the drive at all? If not use the discs that came with the drive to get it formatted so that Windows will recognize it. Windows will not recognize any new drives as they are in RAW format. They need to be in NTFS or FAT32.

Cheers,
Mak

Hi,

I've got an HP laptop with 3 USB ports and a WD Elements 1TB external harddrive which I've been using for a while now. I just bought a second WD Elements 1TB drive which I had shipped from the store to someone else to load some files on and then that person shipped it to me. However when I plug the new hd into one of my computer's USB ports the computer won't recognise it under My Computer, even when I unplug the 1st (old) hd and plug the 2nd (new) hd into the same USB port currently being used by the 1st. The person who loaded the files said they had a Mac so I don't know if the harddrive initialized to a Mac or what, or if something like that's even possible.

I've tried the following steps and it showed the hd was online, so I don't know what else to do. Also they both show up under 'Devices and Printers', the 2nd just won't show up under My Computer where it can be accessed. Any help would be very appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Computer won't recognise second external harddrive

Crap, I just called WD technical support and they said it was because the other guy had a Mac so it would be possible to reformat the drive to NTFS but I would lose all the data. Anybody got any ideas on how to save this data? It was the only reason I got the drive in the first place!

Can I run a virtual Mac on my pc and burn the data to a CD-RW and slowly transfer the data to my other hard drive?

Having a lot of files, I aquired a shiny 500GB WD external harddrive about ten months ago. It's been very good to me; however, this past Saturday night when I connected it to my laptop, RUI didn't pop up (I named my external RUI). Instead, it read Local Disc (G: ). I tried unplugging RUI and reconnecting him many times, but my laptop still fails to recognize him.

I searched the internet for solutions. Many others have had simular experiences and have found a solution by right clicking on My Computer and then clicking on Manage, which leads into Computer Management. From there, they clicked on Disc Management and the drives came up and they regained access to the external harddrive. I attempted to open drive G: but it only lead me to a blank window. I tried to explore drive G:, but that lead me to a blank window as well. After about thirty seconds a window popped up asking me to reformat the drive. If it wasn't for the fact that irriplaceable photographs and home videos from family gatherings were on there, I'd be fine with it, however, I don't want them to be destroyed.

I just got off the phone with Western Digital's tech support with no luck. For one, I didn't understand the man as his accent was very strong, but he had me do the exact same thing I found online. I told him that the window was blank and that the reformatting window came up. I wasn't sure what he said after that. Something about needing to copy or backup the files fro... Read more

I have a Cutie harddisk drive from Sarotech and my pc does not allow me to open up and view contents or do anything with it. My computer does acknowledge that I have an external harddrive connected when I look under device manager but that's all. My friend who gave it to me has a Mac and it worked fine on his computer. I tried it on another PC and it didn't work. I have a cable that allows me to hook up the power to a USB port .

Any ideas?

Hi,

I've been running a Maxtor One Touch external harddrive on my Dell Latitude D630 running Vista for almost a year with no problems. Now suddenly my computer won't recogize the HD.

I've plugged it in to another computer and it recognized it no problem.

I also looked it up the properties on Device Manager and and it the error message says the drive isn't on. It's obviously on and working, but apparently the computer has suddenly decided it doesn't recognize it.

What are my options at this point?

Thanks!

Answer:Computer stopped recognizing my external harddrive

Not much I can suggest, but have you tried connecting the HD into different USB slots also you could try doing a system restore before the problem occurred.

I am a newbie on using external / SATA harddrive. My new external drive worked perfectly at the beginning for weeks,
All of a sudden, I plugged the USB cord in again and the computer made that same "ding dong" sound to indicate some device has been plugged in but this time it is not showing the new drive letter.
I tried plugging it in my other computer that also runs Windows XP and the external harddrive also failed to show up as a drive letter under My Computer.

I right-clicked My Computer and selected Manage/Disk Management. The drive letter does not show up there neither.

The green light on the external hard drive is on. What is wrong with my hard drive?
There is a DC Power plug in outlet on the side. I'm not sure if I need to buy an AC Adaptor to plug it in to make it work since it didn't need an adaptor to work at the beginning.

Please help.
Thank you.

Im running Vista x64. Tried to transfer files from another computer to my home pc. Its a new 2.0 external harddrive (compatible with Vista) with 100gb/320gb used up. When I plug in the HD, the computer recognizes it and there is no problem. The problem comes when I open up explorer and try to view the files inside the external HD. The computer gets extremely slow (basically frozen) and the task manager says that the explorer uses 1,100,000 KB. The harddrive works on every other computer I have tried it on.... Whats the problem???

I need some help desperately. Thank you!

Hey guys! Need your help please. My girlfriend just gave me a 500GB GreenDrive External Hard Drive made by Fanton Drives. She got it for a gift and didn't really have a need for it, but hooked it up to her computer and it has worked fine and she hasn't had any problems with it. I get it and hook it up and my computer won't see it AT ALL! I've tried everything. For hours now. That's how I happened to find out about this site. I've tried restarting my computer, re-powering the ext. hd., plugging the power supply into different outlets, plugging the ext. hd. into different usb ports on my cpu, I've tried disk management, creating a disk, everything. I can't find anything online or through Fanton's website. Nothing through Google. Finally I found Tech Forums so I'm counting on you guys. I'm wondering if the damn thing got dropped or something. It doesn't take any drivers because I'm running Windows XP SP2 so I'm completely clueless. Please Help! Thanks! Peace!

Answer:Computer Won't See GreenDrive 500GB External HardDrive

Try this first, if your hdd is a sata model, hook it up too sata port 1.
Turn on your machine and go into the bios, look at the hardware display screen.
If it shows up, it might say primary master or secondary master, thats a good start for now.

Read this first about sata and windows xp, that should tell you why it may not be coming on.

Recently a friend of mine asked to take some movies off of my external harddrive, when he returned it to me I noticed an"internet explorer" icon on my desktop, over time several other foreign icons appeared on my desktop. I tried to locate the source and it seems to be inside my internetexplorer.exe, but it will not let me delete it or give myself permission to delete. Only the "trustedinstaller". As I said, I am unable to give myself or change permission. It has also blocked me from being able to condut a system restore.

Also, in my external harddrive from time to time a tempoary file pops up, but after several seconds will again hide itself, then later reappear under a different name. I also did an AVG scan which deleted all of my pictures, music, and movies from my external harddrive. Horrified, I quickly recovered the files, although AVG still detects these files to be infected.  I am now moving the files from my external hardrive to my laptop to format and restore my external harddrive. I do think that the files will still be infected either way.

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated, I dont know really what else to do short of wiping everything clean. I would prefer not to lose all my pictures if possible. They hold great value to me.

Attached are 2 photos, the first is of the desktop icons and the second is of the temp file which shows in my external harddrive and now the folder when I moved the files to my laptop.

The equipment is good. Seagate 250gb SATA.

External Enclosure from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817193030

It works flawlessly with any Vista computer. But on XP computers I get the same result; it is not recognized in my computer or disk management. If I fiddle with it enough I can get it to be recognized; uninstall drivers, reinstall them. restart, replug it in. Nothing is consistent, but sometimes it does indeed get recognized. But it's hard.

What happened originally was I bought it. Put it together. Installed the guy. And then I went to disk management and formatted it. I copied files to it. but when I turned it on and off it wouldn't be recognized! I plugged it into my roomates vista comp and it instantly came up and he copied files off of it.

Now I can't get it to come up in disk management or my computer EVEN though it is installed in the device manager and the safely remove hardware box comes up.

I've searched google for hours and no solutions. Please help me

also, when it is plugged in it takes my computer a really long time to boot.

Exactly as the title says. Frequently when I try to transfer a file over ~100 MB to my new external harddrive it freezes up. It is a Hammer 500GB USB External with it's own power source, formatted NTFS (like my internal HD). I really only bought it to store big files on and it's really annoying when it locks up 75% of the time I transfer those big files onto it. My OS is Windows Xp Pro. This occured and occurs before and after a complete reformat/reinstall of my operating system. I tried to run a diagnostic tool on it but the diagnostic itself locked the dang thing up! I am just not familiar with issues like this and don't have a clue where to start to find out what the problem is. Did I just acquire a really crappy external?

Hi,

I could swear the tech told me to turn off my external hard drive ONLY while computer is ON, but it doesn't make sense to me...should it be off or on when I shut down my computer...

Thanks!

Answer:External Hard Drive-turn off while computer on or off?!

You want to make sure nothing is access the drive or writing to it
You should have an icon in the system tray - lower righthand side to eject (stop) the drive
I have done Both depending on what I wanted to do next - if I want to continue to use the laptop - i would make sure nothing is communicating with the drive and switch the drive off and unplug or if i finish for the day I just shutdown and then switch the harddrive off.

I have a 1.5TB external hard drive connected to my computer running Windows 7 via USB. It is on and connected when I start my computer, however, it does not show up in Explorer and is not accessible. So I power it off. I know the computer "sees" it in some sense because I hear the windows disconnect sound when I turn it off. I wait a few seconds and then turn it on, and now it shows up and works. This only happens with 1 of my external drives and not with the other 5 I have on my computer. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks!

So it starts with my HP Vista laptop having issues with its DEP and then with anything windows related. I bought an external hardrive to back up the files and then do a system restore. After successfully doing both I tried to restore the data but at first glance couldn't figure out how to do it, so I decided I would try restoring it onto my desktop, which runs on XP, when I did that I realized what I was doing wrong in the first place and knew how I could get it onto my laptop but my desktop has alot of memory and I thought it would be a safe place to put all my stuff in case something happens to my laptop again. So I restored the data onto my desktop and then after it finished the system froze and the computer shut off. Now when I try to power on my desktop it stops at the startup Emachine screen (just a really big e). I realize that loosing the data is my fault but if anyone has any help for either fixing my computer or at least restoring the data on my desktop it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I currently have a laptop that is a few years old, anyhow I am building my own computer with a friend of mine. I have a external 120 gig Western Digital External Harddrive hooked up to my laptop now. (The external harddrive is brand new) I need a harddrive for the new computer I am building and was wondering would it work if i opened up the external harddrive casing and removed it from there and installed it in my computer i am building. Whats your thoughts on the change in power supply and could it work and what?

Pat

Answer:External Harddrive into Interal Harddrive

if you are building a laptop... no. it is built completely differently.
with a desktop computer you would not be able to either because the connection inside its casing is different. its better to keep your external the way it is and get an internal. you could then use your external as a backup.

Hi,

Every time I boot up my Windows XP PC I get the S.M.A.R.T. monitor warning that my hard drive has got a problem and I have to press F1 to continue to the login screen.

I have replaced the hard drive with a new 160gb drive, I have been getting the S.M.A.RT. error message for about 4 years but I have never had a problem so I have also put the old hard drive back in as a slave/storage drive.

But when I boot up the PC I still get the S.M.A.R.T. monitor warning even though I have turned off S.M.A.R.T. monitoring on the old drive in the BIOS.

I plan to use the old drive to store music and photos and I regularly backup all my drives so I have minimised the risk of the old drive finally packing up on me.

What I really need top know is if I can turn off the S.M.A.R.T. monitor warning that I get at boot up and how I would do this?

Thanks for you time...

Answer:How to turn off S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring on a harddrive

Rather than turn off the warning (which is equivalent to your choosing to ignore a traffic light at a busy intersection)...I suggest heeding it and taking steps to protect your access to any files which are on said drive.

If you want to turn it off, there is usually a place in the BIOS for doing so.

If you are getting SMART warnings when it's turned off...I would say that your motherboard or BIOS is in trouble.

I turn off the warnings myself, been doing it for years (I can tell when a drive is going bad by looking at Event Viewer and other symptoms). Not every warning of hard drive failure is a SMART warning.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?

You will need to check that your system bios supports USB Bootable devices first, and if necessary you should be able to install windows onto it and then make it the default boot device in system bios.

Question: External Harddrive

I have a Nexxtech harddrive enclosure, and it doesn't seem to want to work for an extended period of time. Once I get it to work and be recognized, I will turn it off, and the next time I turn it on, the computer will recognize it as a RAW disc. That is, unformatted. When I try to access it again after that, explorer will freeze. The jumper settings are set to master, so that's not the problem. I tried to put the harddrive into the computer, and all worked out fine. I tried another harddrive in the enclosure, and everything worked out great. So, its not the enclosure, or the harddrive, or any of the connections. I'm out of ideas. The harddrive is a samsung of sorts, and 80gig. I've formatted it to NTFS, because that's how I need it formatted. On a very rare occasion, the harddrive will show up, and will have no issues, but any files that I previously put on it are missing. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I've got an old hard drive that i want to get some data off, so i bought click here to be able to connect it to my laptop. i read all the instructions and connected it accordingly. when i turned the device on i got the message that new hardware has been detected then it turned into mass storage device and displayed the name of the hard drive. (Maxtor D540X-4K) But i cannot find it anywhere. I followed the instructions on an earlier post but nothing. It sounds like the disc is spinning but i don't know what else to try.many thanks!

I use one of those units on both my computers. In the System Tray (by the clock) you should have an icon that says "Safely Remove Hardware" when you hold your mouse over it.If you click on it you will get a message something like: "Safely remove USB Mass storage device - Drive G" Mine is Drive G, yours might be different. It should then be available in your "My Computer"

Hello all,

Tomorrow (Sunday) I am getting a 1TB external harddrive and was wondering weather I could basically copy the whole of my C: drive including the OS to it. I also want to boot straight from the external drive. I also do not really care if it is'nt recommended lol. If this is possible would it also be possible to dual-boot with XP? I have both install disks for Vista and XP and I am willing to buy software.

Please could you tell me exactly what to do and what programs I need.

Question: External Harddrive

I have a 500GB usb 2.0 Netec external hard drive.

It has worked fine since I bought it about 5 months ago. However this morning I couldn't open a folder on the drive as it said it was corrupted. Strangely later on I could open that file but not a different one. I couldn't find a reason for this or how to fix it so I decided to try and fix it by reformatting it and just copy over the data lost from the my other computer.

However I can only run a quick format the long one does not complete. If I run the quick format and and try to copy data over it has a slow transfer rate and not all the files are copied correct and some do not open.

Does anybody know why I cannot copy data over successfully and how I can fix this problem?

I am running windows 7 home premium on a acer aspire TimelineX I have had no problems in the past with this drive and was surprised it had an error in the first place as I always safely removed hardware to prevent this problem.

Thanks in advance

Question: External Harddrive

I purchased an external hard drive (WD Essential, 500gb) that is used exclusively to create Macrium Reflect images for three different computers.

Computers are:
HP Laptop with Vista
Dell Desktop with Vista
Computer I built with Win7 as the OS

When I plugged in the external hard drive to each computer, it trys to install the external software. This worked no problem with Win 7. With the other two computers it says the external hard drive was NOT installed properly. However, I can see the drive in windows explorer on all the computers. I had no problem creating Macrium Images for each computer with Macrium.

I can restore the images on the Win 7 and the Dell computers without any issues.

The HP Laptop is causing me a problem. When the external drive is connected, it will NOT boot. It hangs up very early in the boot process with Macrium Rescue Disk in the CDrom. Without the external drive connected it boots from the rescue disk. WD techies were no help to solve the issue.

I did extensive reseach to solve this issue and I was told to boot into the bios and change something (I never could find out what to change).

If anyone has a clue I can use the help. Thank you.

Answer:External Harddrive

G'day Huffman,

I'm not sure if this will solve the problem, but with the BIOS setting......do you remember if you were told to look for an option called Legacy USB or something very similar to that?

The Legacy USB option is used to tell the computer, before any Windows drivers boot, that there is a USB keyboard and/or mouse connected to the computer. I wonder if that is what is required by your HP to "see" the WD Essentials USB drive? Can you have a look and see if you have that option in your BIOS, and let usknow whether it is turned "ON", or "OFF"?

Golden

There is an old theory that you could put it an airtight bag and into the freezer for a few hours; then connect up and you may be able to get the data off it.More likely though the drop will have caused some physical damage - you could always open up and have a look in the hope that it is something simple like a disconnection of somesort.I don't hold out much hope though.click here for a new option; click here for a smaller and cheaper option.

My 2 year old computer has been freezing up and crashing lately so I'm going to be wiping the hard drive and starting over. I'm trying to back up all of my music and important files but I'm going to lose a lot. I would like to avoid this situation in the future but I'm not sure what is causing the problem.

I'm thinking of buying an external harddrive for files that I will want to keep for a long time (like music and school stuff) so that I can wipe the drive when it gets messed up and not lose everything. The guy at Bestbuy explained it in a way that made it sound like they were essentially uncorruptable but I'm assuming they have some major drawbacks or people would use them for everything.

Alternately, is there some kind of upgrade I can do on my computer (its a desktop) so that it will run better and I won't have to deal with wiping it at all? I'm not sure if I'd need RAM or memory or what.

If it helps, here's what I know about the machine:
it runs Windows Vista
HP Pavilion a6110n PC
64 X2 Dual-core processor
2048 MB system memory
320GB hard drive
i'm currently using up 115 GB

Thank you!

Answer:External Harddrive or more ram?

well, an external hard drive is nice to keep your stuff on like you said. theyre pretty reliable for the most part if you get a good one. you could add another GB of RAM if you want, but the 2GB you have now is pretty standard for older computers. you have a 2 year old computer which more than likely has a lot of crud on it that is slowing it down.

you should try to clean your computer first, and use operating system reinstalls as kind of a last resort if youre not able to clean your PC, or if there is just too much junk on it to make the time worth it.

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 - Try this. It's a link to a basic computer maintenance thread. give this a try before you decide to wipe out your hard drive.

Answer:WD External 80g harddrive

What exactly is the "hardware area"? If the drive is recognized in one way or another, you should be able to use a data recovery program to save your info. Luckily, it's only 80gb and chances are it isn't full (imagine if it was a full 500gb drive!). Anyway, be sure you have a place to save the recovered data; either lots of space on drive C: or a different external drive, or whatever. Here's a list of free data recovery programs:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/Partition_Find_&_Mount_d5740.html *
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Disk_Investigator_d1341.html
.... and one over at Snapfiles http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/softperfect-file-recovery/spfilerecovery.html

* = these are primarily for 'rebuilding' or recovering an entire partition, at the partition level, versus file recovery at the file level.

I haven't necessarily used all of these, I just listed some here for your convenience. I have used PC Inspector; it isn't super user friendly, it isn't super fast, but it does work really well for a free program.

Good luck!

Hello All,

I keep having an issue with my Maxtor My Touch 4 USB hard drive on my Windows 7 64 bit desktop (Dell XPS 8300). Randomly on power ups of my PC, this external hard drive is not recognized and shows as an "Unknown Device" under the USB controllers in Device Manager. (Please see screenshot attached) When I say randomly I mean one time I boot and the hard drive is there and it works perfectly, the next time I boot, it is not recognized.

To fix this issue, I can uninstall one of the two "USB Root Hubs", reboot, and the hard drive will reappear.

Why would this hard drive show correctly after one boot up and not another when nothing on the PC has changed? And how can I keep this from happening?

Thanks for your input.

My sister pulled out the USB cable to my external hard drive when it was in use and dropped it on the floor from 2-3 feet. It turns on but when I do turn it on I hear a small buzzing sound for 1 second and my computer doesn't detect it as plugged in. Is the hard drive broken completely? And is there any place that specializes in fixing it since I had a lot of data stored in there.

Answer:External Harddrive Help

Yea, its probably gone. There are places to recover data on drives such as this one but they cost alot of money. I would put the DRIVE itself in another PC using the EIDE Cable and try to recover the data. Beyond that you can RMA it and hope they recover the data for you.

I have an internal harddrive, that I wanted to make to an external drive, tat I can connect to my network. This way I can see it from several of my computers, if I can connected to my network. If its possible I need assistance on what kind of adapter I would need.

thanks

Answer:external harddrive

You need to search for "hard drive enclosures" on a site like Newegg or Amazon. Be sure to get one that is the right size (2.5" or 3.5") and connection type (IDE or SATA) to match the drive you have.

There are two basic ways to network it:

a.) Attach it to a PC that has file sharing/discovery enabled. The catch is the PC must be turned on for the drive to be recognized on the network. A USB connected drive enclosure is usually much less expensive than an enclosure that connects directly to a network (see below).

b.) Buy an enclosure that can be connected directly to a network. Search for "NAS enclosure" or "Network Attached Storage Enclosure" - again, be sure to purchase the correct size and connection type to match your existing drive.

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year to AllThis problem has been annoying me for quite a while and i am at the end of my imagination on how to solve it.I bought a number of cases that are able to accept what were internal HD's and use them instead as external devices connected by 2.0 USB connections. The 2 computers i am eneavoring to use the device on are both running WinXP Pro SP2.Both computers have front and rear 2,0 USB ports.   I have tried 2 computers and 2 different inernal HD's.Both HD's contained data/programs/etc. The 1st was an 80gb. The 2nd is a 8.2 gb. The larger had been in an XPpro machine as a primary (with problems associated with that particular HD ,software not hardware problems). The 8.2 is from a win98se as a slave.    I configured both to slave before installing them in the case. The case has it's own power supply.  I am using a 250gb external HD constantly in one of the 2 tested computers with no problems. I also use Flash drives between 512 mb and 8gb on both on a regular basis without problems.  On one of the 2 computer for a very brief instance   there was a "new hardware found" and nothing after that. There is no refference on either computer in "device manager " as to that external being there.   As well "my computer" does not show it present.   I purchased 3 of these cases from a reputable retailer online. Thank you very much in advance

Question: External HardDrive

I am looking for a new EHD with at least 1tb in capacity. There are so many choices, anyone have a recommendation? I have used Seagate in the past and they seem to be solid. If anyone has purchased one lately please let me know. Thanks.

Answer:External HardDrive

I have two external 1TB hard drives, both WD My Passport (the portable size). The latest was purchased a few months ago.

I actually have 5 external hard drives purchased at various times and all are Western Digital.

Question: External Harddrive

alright just got a 250GB external hardrive.. well its scheduled to backup all my files tonight since i dont want it to slow down my computer right now because i do use it alot just wondering when everything is backed up.. can i turn the thing off?

Like common sense says i can turn it off but leave it pluged into my computer.. will this cause anything bad to happen? will my files all be there even if its off for like a month or more?

Just want to know because i dont want to put files on it and delete them here and then find out that they are no longer on the back up harddrive.

Answer:External Harddrive

yep, you can turn it off, unplug it, move it, etc with no problems. It only needs to stay plugged in and on if you are using automatic backup software.

gimpster

Question: External Harddrive

I have a Seagate 40 GB External Harddrive. It used to work well. A friend borrowed it once and it stopped working since then.

Actually the problem is - it is not being detected by the laptop (it doesn't show up in the device manager). But the light of the drive is on.

I wonder what might have happened to it. , whether we can somehow make it work !!

My Laptop specifications: Toshiba Satellite 2.4 G Hz, 240MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 1.

Hi, i think this issue has been posted before but i really could not understand what was going in the previous thread so i was hoping for a step by step of what i should do.

I have been using an external usb harddrive which worked perfectly fine for a while but stopped being detected in windows xp (am running windows 7 now) all of a sudden. When i plug it in, the sound of a usb device being detected is made and it attempts to install the driver to run the mass storage however, no drive shows up anymore in my computer. Also, under disk management it does not pick up this drive either. I have tried different computers/usb slots as well as cables and it does the same thing.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:External USB harddrive help

just received an error message saying that windows could not install the right driver to run the usb mass storage device.

So another words, why cant i access my external hardrive anymore? It shows that there is something there but acts as though there isn't.

So before I had the C & D -Drives, and the "I -Drive" use to be what whould show up for the external hard-drive. Can anyone help? It says device is working properly. I did the updated driver option. Rollback option is showing not available.

What do I do? External hard drive is connected through flashdrive like cable.

Question: External Harddrive

i bought a sony vaio USB external harddrive off of ebay. it didnt work when i first got it but after some searching i found creating a new DWORD value in the registry disabling the selective suspend on the USB solved the problem. i havent used it in a while and im getting a message saying that the device isnt recognized and isnt showing up in my computer what do i do

Answer:External Harddrive

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify th... Read more

I am trying to view my external harddrive on my PS3. I found a website that said you go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Managment. It said to right click on the drive the External harddrive is and click delete partition. I did that, and it just disappeared from My Computer. Now I see it's still there on the lower right hand of the screen by the clock. It is also listed under device managers.

I've read for help, and they all say to go to disk management, right click on it and assign it a drive letter. I just do not see the external harddrive there to right click on it.

Please help. I hope I didn't lose any data on it!

Answer:External Harddrive Help

If you deleted the partition through Disk Management, you deleted all the data on it.

Hi,
I'm thinking about buying the harddrive as think it kind of cheap. Toshiba 1TB Canvio Basics 3.0 Portable Hard Drive in Black at $89.00 in Portable Hard Drives

Anyway I'm planning on getting a Mac next year for uni, and it says that this harddrive is not comptable with mac unless I convert it to FAT32.

I just want to know what FAT32 is?? Will it make it slower when transferring stuff??
Also is it easy to change it to fat32??

Thanks

You could Google Fat32 while waiting for an answer here.

As to formatting the drive, that is easy.
Attach it to the computer & open my computer & right click your new drive & choose Format.
Choose Fat32 from the dropdown menu.
Do not choose the Quick format.

Do a full format.
A full format takes a very long time to complete.

Question: External Harddrive

I have an overful internal hard drive and a mostly empty 500GB external. Is there any major reason I shouldn't use the external to install games onto? I have the external plugged in to the same computer and it's never been disconnected as of yet except by powering off while computer is off as well.

Answer:External Harddrive

i think the problem with installing games on your external hdd is it takes longer to access the drive. my cousin installed age of conan on his external drive on accident and it would take forever to load the game but once he realized what he did he reinstalled it and that fixed his problem

As the title suggests I have a hard drive that isnt showing up. Its a seagate 500 gb.

The thing lights up and everything and it shows up in disk management without a letter. From what I've read from various help threads, I'm supposed to right click it and change the disk letter or something but the problem is that it all the options are greyed out

I took out this harddrive and plugged in my other WD 750 gb to see if it do the same thing but the WD harddrive already had a letter automatically assigned and did nothave the change letter option grey out.

any thoughts?

Answer:External harddrive not showing up

Does the drive show up in DISKMGMT, and is it ONLINE or OFFLINE?

Does it show a file system on it (e.g. NTFS) and size/capacity? Or does it show RAW?

Answer:External Harddrive Photos to DVD +-RW

Probably better to shunt the photos over to the main drive first and burn from there

Hello,

I had been using this brand of external harddrive without any problems for about 6 months, when it dropped once (while connected) and broke. It still reads somewhat, but takes very long periods to access certain files.

The ebay seller has no repair services and I do not know where or how to get it fixed. Please help!

Answer:Broken External Harddrive

You would like to get it repaired?Well basically you cant, you can only get hardrives replaced, the good news is you can still access it so you can back up your important files, contact the store you bought it from it should still be under warranty they should replace it,or contact IBM, last time I checked they had a 3 years manufacturers warranty on everything they make so replacement shouldn't be a problem in either case

P.S Dont tell them you dropped it click this link and follow the instructions,"the drive is manufactured by hitachi for IBM" if the retailer refuses to take the drive back,if you live in the UK read the link in my sig for your right of replacement

Recently, my motherboard fired, but the Hard drive was uneffected. Since i had a lot of info on the hard drive i tryed to find people who could take the info off the hard drive for me. I then had this great idea of just putting my hard drive into a "Hard Drive Enclosure Kit". Well, i did that and it worked great. But theres one problem, I can't seem to get into the Owner folder of the hard drive, for evey time i do, it brings up.

L: \Documents and Settings\Owner is not accesible

Access is deniedClick to expand...

Do i have to manually install the hard drive into my computer (and how?), or theres jsut no way in?
