Windows default application settings

Question: Windows default application settings

Recently when I open a Word document, it will open in Wordpad instead of Word. This messes up the formatting. Could some one tell me where/how to reset the default word proccessor to Word instead of Wordpad ?

Thank you for any help and suggestions.

Preferred Solution: Windows default application settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
Right now some of the 'default' application's that come loaded with windows 10 are working..but for some reason some of them are not. The one I'm most concerned about is Mail & Calendar, right now when I go into the windows store..it shows I have update's available, it adds them to the download queue properly..but upon trying to download / install them I get a message that says ' Try that again-see details, Something went wrong, The error code is 0x80070003 in case you need it.
I've tried several thing's to try and correct this..so far no luck, I know there must be a way to correct this. I was previously running Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14251 , but I had some issue's with it..so I had to go back to Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 11102.Now when I try and update some of my application's, this is what I'm seeing..I've tried everything thing I can think of to try,does anyone have any suggestions ?
Thanks,
David

Answer:Re-Install Windows 10 'Default' Application's

Not knowing what you have already tried this may not be a new suggestion but try deleting all the items in the queue, closing the Store, then re-opening it and check for updates again.

A few weeks ago I let someone with very little computer knowledge (he had to drive 1 hour back & forth 5 times to open and save an email attachment each time he had to do that).

Anyway since the last time he came when he was on the computer I noticed a Firefox window opened in a tiny 1x2 inch window in my top left corner of the screen and I had never in years seen that.

Ever since that day my Firefox windows often open in a tiny 1x2 inch window where you barely see half the toolbar and nothing else.

It's getting really annoying and that time he came was just after my last backup disk got full so I had to erase my entire backup disk to start a new one, so I had no recent backup to restore to restore to after he did this.

How do I get my Firefox window to open a normal size again, and I don't mean just maximized, I want the restored window size to no longer be 1x2 inches.

Answer:How to change default application Windows size?

Dragging the window to the size you want it or maximizing it and then selecting File > Close/Exit should save the window in that state.

I do not know how to change fonts to default. It looks horrible. Defaults were good. I tried couple of things but nothing is worked.

Sample font.

Sometimes in browser, half fonts are visible and even in scaled video player, too. check above images of youtube video player.

Also check below font size in CPUz. In CPUz, I was not facing this problem before. I am facing after something happened/changed. I think I had changed default theme to Windows classic and back to default. Then, after I am facing this issue but I am not pretty sure.

I haven't really looked into it, but if they allow you to access the POP/IMAP servers directly then any email client should do

I hope I am not too long winded with this problem but here goes. I have had a new pc with win xp about a week. Only played with it so far and saved a few pages of letters. Then tried to add e-mail accounts and found some key strokes did not matchthe keys. Went to control panel and changed language settings - all's well. Used the pc a few more times - everything fine.Then used pc again and everything has gone back to before I changed settings and wiped out my letters.Control panel again and changed settings again.Everything okay and my saved letters have returned.Any ideas please.ThanksSmokeyone

Answer:windows xp default settings

If an XP users account becomes corupted Xp is unable to save the changes you make to it when you sign off/turn off. Hence when you log back on, the accound reverts back to the how it was, and any changes made have been lost. If you open the windows task manager (ctrl + alt + del) and select the 'Users' tab, hopefully the user you are signed in as will be listed. if the status is given as 'temporary', this users is being treated by Xp as a 'temporory' user, and any changes this user makes to the account settings will not (or perhaps *can not*) be saved when the users logs off. Ideal for an internet café, when the user's changes will not effect the next customer, but a bit of a pain for the PC owner.How to fix the problem i am not sure. It happened to me, and i had to re-install XP. perhaps open the 'run' command and type in 'SFC /scannow' (note the space before the /) and have your XP disk handy in case it is asked for. Hope this helps.

I bought two new computers today for my business, both had the same hardware and software with windows 8 installed. I noticed that one of them they have some toolbars on the taskbar that the other one doesnt have, on one of the pc's there is an address bar labeled "Address"

The other PC didn't come with it activated by default, just wondering if this is normal. both these computers are brand new and identical. Maybe someone fooled around with it before sending it to me

Answer:Does windows 8 have default settings?

If they are truly identical, maybe someone turned one of them on at one point (and didn't turn the other one on).
Most computers are sold with tamper-proof tape holding the box closed - did yours have this?

In most cases, identical computers will have identical software.
The exception here is if the OEM has changed things during manufacture and is using a different image.

Is there any way to take Windows 10 back as if I had just installed it without losing programs I have installed?

Answer:How do I take Windows 10 back to default settings

The easiest and most reliable way is to download the ISO file for the Windows 10 version you have installed (Pro, Home, Single Language, "N", etc.). Either burn a DVD/USB from the ISO or just mount it and run setup.exe from it from within your currently running Windows 10. That will do an in place "upgrade" just like your initial upgrade. If it asks you for a product key, stop and cancel because you are probably attempting to re-install a different version of Windows 10 than what you are currently running.

Hi, if I choose a picture to use as a background on my pc ( windows 10) , every time I change the picture it reverts to the "fill " option instead of the "fit" option I want, Is there a way of making sure every time I change the picture/photo background it will always stay as fit by dafault. I'm fed up of needing to go and change the defaults every time I change the image thanks

Answer:windows 10 default settings in window 10

You can set the default Desktop picture style option using the Windows PowerShell App. To run the PowerShell App and set default style as 'Fit':-

Open 'All apps' in the Windows Start menu.
Scroll down and expand / open the 'Windows PowerShell' folder, and click on 'Windows PowerShell' to open a PowerShell command Window.
Copy and paste the following command line into the PowerShell window and press the Enter key:-
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop' -Name "WallpaperStyle" -Value 6
Log off and Back on again and the default style option should now be set to 'Fit'

Other options available via the same method are:
Set Default as 'Centre':-
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop' -Name "WallpaperStyle" -Value 0
Set Default as 'Tile':-
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop' -Name "WallpaperStyle" -Value 1
Set Default as 'Stretch':-
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop' -Name "WallpaperStyle" -Value 2
Set Default as 'Fill':-
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\Desktop' -Name "WallpaperStyle" -Value 10

Recently built a new XP2400 system only for it to fall flat on its face as the 80Gb hard drive caused Windows to allocate a huge chunk of resourses to temporary Internet files. This made Internet explorer unstable etc.What other Windows default settings do we need to watch out for apart from the obvious keyboard language, and regional settings.Think I will publish an idiots guideCheers

If you're running XP, you could reduce the percentage of space used by the "Bin" and "System Restore".

Hi.
This morning I was using my computer and all was normal and I shut it down as I always do. Tonight I turned it on and when I logged in instead of saying the welcome message it said "preparing desktop" and after that I got to my desktop and my icons were gone, my background image was from factory settings and my softwares restored to default settings.
System Restore is off since the first day so no luck with that.

URGENT HELP, Please! Earlier today, I tried to open an exe file in my downloads. It was for a printable coupon. When I clicked on 'open', I was prompted to choose a programme in which to open this file. Windows recommended 'Media Player' ...? Foolishly, I clicked on this and, ever since then, every programme on my computer opens as Media Player! Even the icons in my task bar show as Media Player! I cannot imagine which programme was used to open this type of exe file previously. Nothing listed appears to be the right one. I have asked all over the internet, phoned my ISP, no one can help. I've even tried a couple of fixes on here but I don't really know what went wrong or exactly what I need to restore. PLEASE, can anyone help? I cannot even switch off my laptop because I'll never get back onto the internet - which now opens as Media Player!!!

Answer:How do I restore my default settings in Windows 7?

Hello Mozer, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you can download and merge the .reg file for the listed exe option in the tutorial below to restore the default associations for .exe files.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

If that doesn't help, then you could do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you made this change to undo it.

I got a new laptop (Pavilion 17) and first time using windows 10.

Problem 1 - I originally had to turn on scrolling for the click pad which was yesterday. Now today scrolling was turned off and I had to turn it back on again. Stopped using computer last night while it was copying files over (via network). Computer was left open and running.

Problem 2 - This morning the network was completely disconnected and I had to go in and 'join the network' again. I did have to 2 this 3 times yesterday while I was using the computer as well.

Problem 3 - This morning all my windows had been closed? Explorer windows that were being used to copy and firefox also.

Any help on these issue would be greatly appreciated. I have read a lot on how everyone hates windows 10 and am considering going back to windows 7 but sooner or later that will not be a viable option.

Thanks a ton!

Today I had a notification saying windows will install updates as scheduled, which I havent really seen before, so im guessing I may have miscondigured the settings.

Answer:what are the default windows update settings

Go to Start Menu and type = Update = Near the top you will see = Windows Update = Click on that and it takes you to where you can make changes. Click on = Change Settings =. It should be = Install Updates Automatically = and there are four boxes at the bottom. I have the first three checked. The one on the bottom is not necessary.

I currently have Firefox, IE and Edge installed on my PC. Firefox is set as the default browser. When I go into the default apps setting screen and click to change my default browser, only IE and Firefox are on the list, so I can't select Edge.

However, if I click the "Reset" button to reset all of the default apps, Edge becomes the default browser, but obviously that resets all of my other default apps too, which is a pain. As soon as I choose either IE or Firefox as my default browser, I am unable to select Edge again as it's not on the list, so all I can do is hit "Reset" again.

What's also strange is that if I right-click on a HTML file and choose "open with", Edge doesn't appear anywhere on that list either.

I've tried the system file checker, but it said that everything was fine. With Edge not being something that I can uninstall and reinstall, I don't know how I can go about fixing this.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Hi!

I re-installed windows last night, and after downloading and installing all 160+ necessary updates successfuly, changed the settings to 'never check for updates' because i want to be able to do that by myself, once a week or so. However every time i check the settings, it seems that it's somehow again set to 'install updates automatically' and i don't know what's causing it.

I have installed some new software, like office and security essentials, etc, which might be what's changing the settings since they also require updates (?) but i'm not sure that's the cause, or if it's some sort of error with Windows Update, etc.

It's not a major issue, but i have heard that some updates failing can cause issues with restarting, so i would very much like to find a solution to the problem.

Thanks.

hi, I had Windows 10 on pm PC and I tried to reset it to default settings since it was slow, with the option of deleting every file since I had backup elswhere, from Options it didn't work so tried Shift and restart. it seemed to work but at 65% it said it had incounterd a problem and that it had to restart. So I did and it encounterd the very same problem at 65%. So I turend it off with the intent of trying again after it had restarted bu, when I turned it on it started an infinite loop of the HP logo. I tried all suggestions that I found on the HP Forum, disconnected battery+cable, tried resetting BIOS with f9 and saving with f10 but it does not seem to make andy difference. The only thing that I have found is that is sais that "your computer needs to be repaired" and gives me the error code 0xc0000225. I have looked into putting a cd to reset it but a) I don't have the cd b) the computer does NOT have a cd slot.

The computer is an HP tpn-I119 and it came with Windows 8 as default which I upgraded.

thankyou in advanced, Happyteo

On two of our user accounts the screens have gone back to a Dell default screen (custom background is gone) and half of the desktop icons are gone. Extremely slow. Everything is still there when I go to Windows Explorer and look for it. Started getting message that I have less than 15% hard drive space left and when I look it is less than 5%. Computer is making funny noises like the fan or cabinet is loose. Also get things like "welcome to Dell setup screen" but unit is 3 years old so it has somehow gone backwards on 2 of the logins.
My question is does this sound like a virus or a hard drive crashing?

... and if so, is there any way to prevent this happening ?

I have 7 "control" computers & photo kiosks, plus 4 workstations all open networked together (password protected sharing is turned off) with network drives and shared folders all over the place. The "control" computers (DCM, RIP, PCC and the Kiosks) all run turnkey proprietary software. With previous versions of windows that I have used (2000, XP & Seven) settings never changed after an update, but after Win10 updates, I am finding every computer has its network settings reset to "password protected sharing turned on". When this happens, the DCM wont talk to the Kiosks, or the PCC, RIP, and Lab workstations (which also won't talk to each other). While the Lab computers can simply have their settings changed on the fly, I have to disable the turnkey systems by removing their hardlock keys so that the software doesn't start, then change the network settings then shut it down and reinsert the hardlock key and repeat the procedure for all the Kiosks and control computers before rebooting the entire system. It takes about about 60-90 minutes to get up and running after a Win 10 update.

Is there any thing I can to do stop this from happening?

Hi, An observation, not a question. I wanted to set Thunderbird as my default email client again (after having reset defaults whilst looking for a problem).

So I set it as my default email client in 'System', 'Default Apps'.

This proved not to be the same as using Control Panel, Default Programs, and setting it as handling all file types it could.

(In particular, the first still did not mean Pop Peeper would find a client it could launch, whilst the second did).

I'm wondering if this will prove the same for other programs.

Answer:'Settings' Default is not= Control Panel 'Default Programs' - All

System, Default Apps??? I don't even see that option.

Hi guys,

I think that the latest Windows 10 update might have reset my windows to the default (initial/standard) settings. I leave my PC ON over the night and when I woke up the PC seemed to have restarted over night (I say to myself it might have been that the power went off sometime over the night or that windows freaking 10 updates restarted my PC), and now I have all of the settings I did to windows back to their default state and all the file associations are reset back to default. Even the video player settings are reset to default.

What the **** just happen ?
EDIT: Great.... looks like all the software acts like they just have been freshly installed

Does it delete (or restore to default) my synced settings in Microsoft Account if i refresh my Windows 8? I need it because i will have problems (e.g. some metro applications are crashing) if i sync back from Microsoft Account to my PC. I can disable sync for all users from Group Policy and then switch to Microsoft Account. But i want change synced data, snyc my new PC settings to my account.

Will refreshing Windows help me or is there any way to delete Windows 8 sync data in Microsoft Account?

Answer:Will Refreshing Windows Restore Synced Settings to Their Default?

Unless you're signed into your Microsoft account, nothing will be lost though the syncing. You can change the sync data by simply changing whatever, it'll sync up. It doesn't save to your puter, it saves the data to a cloud.

I would say refreshing would help, but if you're having issues with metro app, I've had success running sfc /scannow in command prompt.

Dear Friends,

I have a HP Desktop and HP Laptop they both have Windows Live Mail and Windows 7 Home Premium.

However when I go to set the Default programs on the Desktop I do not see Windows Live Mail as it is seen in the attachment on my laptop

I've checked all the settings in both computers and they are identical with the exception of the Windows Live Mail missing as a choice for a default program.

How do I get Windows Live Mail to appear in there as an Option?

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

Thank You!
Sincerely, Ralph

I have gone into settings in my Windows 10 and changed the default music player from groove music to windows media player. But when I click on music files, it automatically starts playing in Groove and NOT windows media player. I have restarted Windows several times with the same results.
What is going on?

Answer:Windows 10 will not obey the system settings for default programs

Hi, not sure if I can help but have you changed the media player for all types of music files? As well as selecting the default player you may have to deliberately change the player for the specific file type in "Choose default app for each file type". This option is found at the bottom of the default apps screen or by typing it into the search bar.

The issue is best explained by an example. I want to associate the .XLSM file with Excel 2016. The later is not an option when you use the settings app using any number of routes in default apps. If Excel 2017 is not available to select and available in the app store then you appear to be stuck. I've many other examples
There are numerous articles about the limitations of using the settings app (default apps) and most refer you to the classic Control Panel. Unfortunately the options there now send you back to the settings app. I believe that changed in the recent release.
I must be mad. It's surely a simple matter of associating files with apps, particularly something as basic as an excel file type with Excel. But I cant see it. HELP!

I'm trying to reset this computer back to its default security settings due to the fact it got owned by a virus.

I've gotten the trojan off the computer, but it set a bunch of policies on the computer and now I can't run/install quite a few programs. It would be much easier if I could just edit the group policies via gpedit.msc but since its XP Home it doesn't have it built in.

I went through all the places in the registry I thought the policies would have been set but I couldn't find anything.

What I'm trying to do now is reset the computer back to its default security settings by going to Run and typing MMC. When the console pops up, I click File, then Add/Remove Snap-in and click Add, and your supposed to add Security Configuration and Analysis, but I don't have that option to select from the menu. If I could add this in I should be able to just load the setup security.inf and reset the computer back to its default settings.

I've tried quite a few other things today but I am starting to run out of options. Any help would be awesome thanks!

You could try running SDFix. As a malware scanner I think it is quite out-of-date, however it will reset a lot of the registry items back to their default value as part of the scan.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/131299/how-to-use-sdfix/

I recently go attacked by a rootkit bagle virus (thanks chaslang for all your help) and upon recovering my wireless network is disabled.

Here is what I know:
1) When in the control panel / network connections and I double click the wireless network connection I get a message: "Windows cannot configure the wireless connection. If you want windows to configure this wireless connection, start the wireless zero configuration (WZC) service."
2) When I try to start that service, I get a 1068 error message.
3) When I reseach that message on microsoft.com I get a list of services that WZC requires to be up and running, and I confirmed that they all are running.
4) It looks like something called Intel PROset/Wireless is controlling the wireless connection because it is detecting wireless but when I use IT to connect nothing happens, and up until the virus I always used Windows wireless network connection.

Anyone have any ideas?
I have unistalled and reinstalled Networking via Add/Remove Windows programs.
I have reset my Internet Setting to their default.

Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! It booted to that point, then my hard drive went mad clicking and crashed. This was after it being turned on and off to see if my graphics card was booting because I had no video, but it turned out I had just been downright stupid and plugged it into the onboard graphics. Anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

Answer:'Previous overclock settings failed, default settings enabled'

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

Whenever I try to highlight part of a word along with another word with the cursor, Windows automatically highlights the entire word. I know this has been the default setting for a long time, but it's really getting on my nerves. If I start highlighting in the middle of a word, it's because I need to highlight starting in the middle of the word.

I know I can override this on the keyboard by using shift to highlight, but that's extremely inconvenient. Is there a way to disable it altogether? Maybe even in just individual programs (in particular, Word, at the moment)?

Answer:Solved: Windows default highlighting settings are annoying -- Can I change them?

adanedhel728,

I don't know of a Windows wide fix, but the following will work in Word 2007.

In Word, click the Office Button then click Word Options.
Select Advanced and uncheck the When selecting, automatically select entire word box.
Click OK.

There should be a similar option if you are using another version of Word.

First and foremost, my intention with this post is not to bag out Windows 10 without good reason, this is myself venting frustration over who's in control of my client's PC - Am I the one in control, or is Microsoft in control? Here's my true to life example:

I have a couple of clients that run an accounting software package called Reckon Accounts and it has to be stated that I feel this particular software package is shit. Last I checked they do not fully support Windows 10 or MS Outlook 2016. In order to maintain compatibility one of my clients is still running Office 2003, yes, that's right, Office 2003! My second client I was forced to set up Thunderbird as their email client in order to maintain compatibility.

The issue shows itself when the clients try to email an invoice as an attachment directly from Reckon Accounts, the driver used to perform such an action is rubbish, but as stated I can work around the issue - With the exception of one major problem.

Every time Windows 10 updates it sets either Microsoft Mail or Microsoft Outlook 2016 as the default mail client, totally buggering up any work I've performed in getting this crappy package working. Furthermore, it's not enough to simply go to Settings > System > Default Apps and select the necessary client as well as go to Control Panel > Default Programs > and select the necessary client, a situation that is ridiculous in itself - Why is there two sections within the OS wh... Hi guys,

For some reason, my Windows 7 is only offering two types of Default Format for my USB Audio Device driver; Telephone quality and Tape Recorder quality.

Obviously both of these are shockingly bad. The thing that makes it worse is that I have just brought a brand new USB Desktop Microphone (Logitech USB Desktop Microphone) and windows is only offering the same settings as my old Webcam Microphone (And it sounds just as bad).

There is one thing I am confused about though: In this video; Logitech USB Desktop Microphone working on Windows 7 64bit - YouTube

The guy is using Windows 7 64-bit (same as me) BUT he has the option to increase the audio quality to DVD quality. It's the same exact Microphone, same windows and appears to be the same driver. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit so it should include all of the drivers, yes?

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Logitech doesn't offer any drivers and the guy in the video mysteriously has the same driver but has more options than me. The microphone is just as useless with loud echos and the like as my old Webcam Microphone.

Thanks for your answers

Answer:Windows 7 only offering low quality Default Format audio settings!

I couldn't find anything particular on forums.logitech.com other than one guy complaining about the quality of the playback sound. His post was in 2008 and nobody replied.

Standard trick to reset a driver is: go into Device Manger. Find the device. Right click on it and choose Remove. Reboot. When Windows comes up again it will reinstall the driver. It works a high percentage of the time. But there's no guarantee.

Might be a good idea to make a Restore Point first if you use them. Just to make sure you don't lose ground.

The photo viewing program in Windows 10 automatically slightly resizes the photo it's displaying according to the window size. And by slightly, I mean slightly. This doesn't matter with things like a photo of your house or family, but it makes a difference with screenshots. What I'm wondering is why it resizes at all. It resizes the photo even if the window is bigger than the photo's actual size. Look @ photo below for reference.

Hello all,

Just around two weeks ago or so, something that I assume I did has caused my PC to stop doing a number of things, such as ;
Recognizing recently used programs in the start menu
Allowing the locking and unlocking of the task bar
Saving the organization of files in the "Quick Launch" bar
Saving my decision to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from the control panel.
Saving default file associations and other such settings
~~~~~(Such as Firefox as my default browser, Winamp and VLC for all media files (Windows Media Player also goes through setup every time it launched when I forget to use "open with."))
Making folders and other things through the Right Click > New menus in folders and on the desktop
And a wide assortment of other problems that I either can't think of or am unaware of at this time.
I remember having a similar issue once in the past, and I was able to resolve it through a system restore from a time before the issue began. This time however, the earliest restore available was already after the problem began.
I'm not really sure where to begin with this issue. Most of my own little research attempts have lead it to being a registry issue, but I have no real justification for that of my own. Many solutions have pointed to the policies directory for Explorer, but I have no items in there to look at.
So, I come to anyone here asking for some guidance in my issue. Thank you for any help you may provide; I truly ... Read more
(windows 7) I accidentally messed up the security settings in the "Default Folder" (a shortcut?) of the Users folder.
I removed administrators permissions , that caused my pc to be unable to restore to previous restore point correctly. However, I was able to re-add the admin permission and everything now is fine.
Yet I need help here.
1 could anyone post screenshots of the default "default folder" security settings? I need to set it back to the default one even though now it works fine.
2 why the hell does that folder NOT HIDDEN? Are yours not hidden as well? Of course the option to hide all system file is checked on my pc. The only reason I messed with that folder is because I thought it was just a normal folder and not a system folder. Anyway to get it back to be invisible?
Thanks for helps in advanced. And I don't want to go to Microsoft supports because they always give robotic replies with no helps at all.
I tried out a "free" zip utility; I think its name is HaoZip. I can't tell for sure because everything is in Chinese. Now when I try to open a zip file, it goes to this junk. Then I am stuck because the fields are labeled in Chinese and I can't use it. I tried uninstalling from its folder in my PC, and have uninstalled in the control panel.
BUT, it continues popping up as the default. How do I stop this invasion?
thanks, Frank
How can I specify a default printer for a single application that is different than the defaul printer for the whole computer?
Answer:Specify Default Priter for a Single Application?
Unless the application stores the info (few do, or are capable of doing so in my experience) you have to select it each time. Or get the application author to recode the application.
The general preferred method adopted is to use the windows default printer.
Answer:Mail and Calendar default application
Hello lvgandhi,
You might see if you may be able to choose them as the default app from the Control Panel instead.
I need to know the registry key, or whatever else I might need to alter the list of applications usable for playing DVDs. I know all about control panel/default programs/change autoplay settings. Please do not direct me there. The program I would like to use is not on that list currently. What I am looking for is the registry key that controls what is shown on that list.
Answer:Vista default application list.
Well, in the meantime, till I get a real answer, here's the hack for anyone interested. I searched the registery for the key WMP.DVD and replaced the command line that ran wmplayer.exe with my prefered player. This fixed autoplay and right clicking and selecting Play. Still wondering how to do this the 'right' way.
When I first signed up with my gmail account it was set to be my default mail application...so when I clicked on a link to email someone that is the mail that sent it. It's now at outlook, and I would prefer to use gmail. Can someone tell me how to change it back, or how to make gmail work through outlook. Right now it uses my hotmail account and that is no longer my main account. Thanks to anyone who can help!
Answer:Default Email Application????? Question please.
Hi Trtlgrl2_78
Yes, you can set up Outlook to handle your Gmail account.
Sign on to your Gmail account,
Click: Settings
Click: Forwarding and POP
Configure your Gmail account for forwarding, then click Configuration Instructions to see how to set up Outlook to receive your Gmail messages.
Let us know if that works for you or not.
Have been unsuccessful in trying to set Photoshop CS5 as the default application for .jpg, .tif, et al. I go the Set Associations screen and Browse (since CCS5 doesn't appear) and, when I choose the appropriate .exe, nothing happens. CS5 doesn't appear and .jpg files remain as Unknown application under the columnar heading Current Default.
Am I missing something?
I had associated .bat files with an editor, but now I'd like to restore the default situation that double-clicking a .bat file will run that file in the command line, as described in http://www.computerhope.com/batch.htm#windows I've used the control panel to reset the associated program to cmd.exe, but double-clicking the batchfile name in Windows just runs the command line, it doesn't process the batch file in it but waits with a command line prompt.assoc .bat returns .bat=batfile and ftype batfile returns batfile="%1" %*I can't see what else to do.
Answer:default application for batch files
Hello Technet,
I'm currently working in the software deployment field. One application I'd like to distribute is called 7zip. I'm able to distribute the application just fine using the silent installer, but the software does not set itself as the default app for zip files.
I'd like to set the application as the default app so that when users double click a zip file, the 7zip file manager opens.
I searched the web already and found a couple of possible solutions, mostly referring to assoc and ftype commandlines, but they all didn't work for me.
Any help is appreciated.
regards
Martin
I posted here just over a week ago because I was trying to install WMP on my PC; thanks to you guys I disovered that it was already installed, even though there was no icon on the desktop, start menu or application bar.
Anyway, I'm now trying to set it as the default application for opening music CDs. The problem is that it is not listed in the default programs, and I cannot seem to get it included on the list. I know how to associate programs with different file types, but that's not really what I want; I'd like WMP to launch automatically when I insert a CD.
All help greatly appreciated
Answer:How do I make WMP default application for music CDs?
Use the Auto Play option.
Right click at Start button > Control Panel > top right, click View by : select either small or large > select Auto Play > scroll down to CDs heading > at Audio CD, click the pointer and select Play audio CD (Windows media Player) > click Save when done.
*** When you are at Auto Play, check out other options and see if you can use one of them.
Hello.
So i've recently downloaded Civ 6, so I decided to look up some mods for it. Because it would make it abit more interesting.
I had a mod that would require me to manually change some of the text in the file to my own liking.
You probably guessed it by now, I forgot to tick off the "set default app" thing.
I've played around with a lot of civ 5 mods in the past. So I feel so stupid to do the mistake now.
I have tried going into cmd with admin and writing "assoc .lua=" but it didnt work, i've also tried to to locate the the default .lua app in the settings on windows 10. But I cannot revert it back, I only have the option to choose Notepad and some other apps.
Can someone please help me? Civ 6 wont register the file unless it gets reverted back to its default "app" or w/e it is
Answer:How do i revert back to default .lua application
.lua doesn't have an association by default in Windows.
If you want to get rid of the association just open regedit and delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lua or select .lua and blank out the (Default) value
I recently had to install XP on another disk. I reinstalled everyting till SP2 and all the apps
I was using. After that I 'cleaned' my original boot drive (I did not actually reformat it).
When I now start my email application (Mozilla - Thunderbird) I always am asked whether
I want this as my default mail application. I answer with yes but apparently for some
reason this doesn't seem to take effect since the next time I log in I'm asked the same
question. The same is true for my wife (she is using incredimail). I've been searching on
the internet already and checked our settings using regedit.
For me HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Clients/Mail is set to Mozilla (for my wife this is
set to Incredimail). When using the start Menu this is also shown like this. But for some
reason when activating the application it is not recognized as default application.
What is even more peculiar is that when e.g. opening an xls file containing email
addresses trying to copy an email address seems to open the default email application
(which of course fails - a popup is generated telling that XLS is waiting for an OLE to
complete) but this leads to an explosion of IE programs to be launched - I don't think this is
some kind of virus but is linked to the fact that registering a default email application fails.
Also when we try to register Incredimail as default email appication an error message
pops up that we have to ask an administrator to do so but our accounts ... Read more
