files present, have a reasonable size, do not open

Question: files present, have a reasonable size, do not open

Pulling my hair out here...

I just got a new monitor, and while installing that accidentally uninstalled the network card. Whoops. Talked to tech support and they said I had to do a reinstall of Windows to get it back, pretty much. So I did, checking "keep files". All went well, until I tried to get into my files. I used to share this computer with others so all of my files under "My Documents" were unshareable under the old system - I'm assuming that's why, when I tried to get to *my* user data, it kept telling me no. After some searching, I found a webpage telling me to reboot in safe mode, go into the folder properties, and reset the owner of those files to my new profile. I did, and everything was restored - except that the files in My Pictures and My Music are all still unaccessible. I can get to them, I can view them, the properties show that they have sizes which seem reasonable for full, normal files - but when I open any of my photos I get nothing - in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, for instance, I get "no preview available". I've tried renaming the files, moving them, copying them, e-mailing them - nothing. The music files are the same - look normal, but when I try and play them they open up as a 0 second music file. Name and info is available, but no music.

In short: any help vastly appreciated. This is the second time in two years I've lost my vacation photos, last year my camera got stolen Maybe I need to stop taking vacations.

Preferred Solution: files present, have a reasonable size, do not open

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: files present, have a reasonable size, do not open

As an aside, save all your pictures to CD or some other source, and then you can access them with almost any viewer...

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

Answer:PDF files will not overide present open screen..

I don't use Adobe.

Many programs have an option, "Start Minimised".

Try checking the "Options" or "Preferences" (I don't know which menu that is in, in Adobe products).
Look for an option like "Start Fullscreen" or "Start Minimised".

Hi Guys,
I recently downloaded America's Army , it was an exe file of 2.50GB .
When I tried to open it ; the pc hung ;
First I thought the file must be broken.
Later when i put in a dvd, to install medal of honor demo 554mb, i experienced the same problem. I opened process explorer and the double clicked again on the exe; I observed that "medal_of_honor_pacific_assault_demo.exe" was opening multiple times , dunno how to put it , like a chain until i terminated it ;
like this

But when i try opening exe files of lower size live TTpro.exe 5mb ; and other stuff they open without any problem.

I scanned for viruses & spyware ; with zonealarm but detected none.

Also I noted that the exe files with large files dont have their usual icons .
I also made sure that they aren't isolated cases. Check the pics

My sys config is AMD 64 3000+ , 1.5GB Ram , nvidia 7100gs, 240gb hd

I'm totally confused about this.

can some one help me?
why does my cd/rw open a screen but no media is present?
when i click any of my other drive icons they all say "insert disk in drive"
but when i click my cd/rw drive, it opens even if there is no media in it.
this drive will work when i put media in it but i cant burn cd any more. i am using nero 6 to burn cds. any thoughts?

Answer:why does my cd/rw open a screen but no media is present?

Yep, because WindowsXP sees a CDR drive it knows it can write to it. So if you open it, even without a disk in the drive, it believes you are preparing to drag and drop files to it to be copied to a blank disk.

Its perfectly normal XP behavior.

Thank you for taking the time to read my query.
I just restored a bkf file and the restored folder is smaller than the original bkf file. I need to delete the bkf file which is 12 GB but don't want to until I am sure all the files were restored.
I would like to figure out which files were not restored.
Is there any way to figure out which files are missing. After I restored the files, the report says that hardlinks could not be transferred but does not the size of them. The bkf file size is 33,754,314 bytes larger than the restored file, but the bkf file "size on disk"is 19, 099,648 bytes smaller than the restored folder!!!
When I left click on the bkf file and select properties it does not tell me how many files are in the bkf file only the bytes.

Is there any freeware/program that will tell me the number of files in the bkf properties dialogue box? Or even better let me look at the size and number of files in the three main folders I backed up.? I can not access/explore the bkf file only restore it. That would solve my problem. My backup tree is C:sharedhardlinkdata>beth>documents and settings>beth> and then 3 folders underneath
Thank you

Greetings,, noob here...

I found several instances of csrss.exe running. Looked up this file, and find it to be a legit file name for a necessary service. All fine so far.

So I decide to search my C: drive for this file, just to see if I have multiple copies, and possibly one might be bogus. I pull up an explorer window, type csrss into the search box, and it finds NOTHING...

Now, I can go find one instance of csrss.exe: it's in the windows/system32 folder... and when I search ONLY this folder, it shows up in the search. But when I try to search the whole C: drive, it can't find it, anywhere. Searching C: for other files runs successfully.

why wouldn't this file appear in a sch of the C drive? Any clues appreciated... thanks!

Good morning Bleeping Computer community,
I have the strangest thing happening in my Recent Files list on my Windows 10 computer. Files with a ZERO byte size, NO create date, NO modify date and with name in Chinese characters appear in the Recent Files list. This is the third time in 2 weeks I have noticed a batch of such files. Below, I will paste in the file names that appear. I tried copying the names into Google Translate, but that did not provide anything I understood.
These files do NOT exist if I browse to my desktop. They are not it the Recycle Bin either. I have unchecked all the HIDE options for File Explorer.
OS: Windows 10 Home
AV: Avast (purchased)
Make: Lenovo
What I have done so far:
1) Scan with Avast. Nothing
2) Scan with Malware Bytes: A few PUP that I removed.
Since those actions, the most recent batch of them appeared. It seems a few repeat and here are the file names...

I am running out of space on my system drive (120GB SSD with < 6GB remaining). It happened in only 12 months. I'd like to know where all that space went, which files are using it. So I'm looking for a way to rank files by size regardless of their folder location, largest-to-smallest, ideally without a full scan of the disk if there are internal indexes that have this info.

P.S. Sometimes Windows seems confused. Microsoft Money Sunset edition is taking up 23TB, for example.

Answer:list all files, by size, larger than a specified size?

This application should help you find what programs are using the most space.

ShowSize Disk Space Analyzer - CNET

Scan your main drive root directory and you can then open up all the sub directories and it will list how much space each sub is using.

First of all I am using Windows XP Professional on an IBM ThinkPad T 42.

To clean up a folder a day or two ago I added a sub-folder and used drag and drop to put the 19 files in the primary folder into the subfolder. Today when I tried to open various files from the 19 I discovered that two of them would not open. The message I get when I click on the file icon is this: This file could not be found, followed by a couple of absurd recommendations for resolving the problem.

Can anyone help me? The two files that will not open represent nearly a whole days worktime.

Hello all,

Just a day ago my computer restarted on me and I found myself stuck in the infamous login/logout loop. I worked tirelessly trying to fix it spending time on this and nearly every other forum I could find looking for answers. I went ahead and copied the registry files (system, security, software, sam, default) from the Windows XP SP2 CD. That didn't work, so I tried copying the userinit to wsaupdater. That also didn't work. The long and short of it is I finally got it working by loading a floppy with the userinit file into my PC and copying it from there back into my drive. It worked and I logged in. I looked at all my accounts while in admin making sure that none of my files had been deleted. Thankfully, they were all there. This is when I encountered my second problem which brings me here.

My personal login account for my computer does not appear on the login screen. When I attempted doing the Ctrl+Alt+Del method to bring up the manual log in I put in the information and it said the account doesn't exist. Yet, when I log into admin and go to explorer I can clearly see all the files and folders in my document and settings "Alan". Furthermore, I check the user accounts and it says there are no other admins set up on the machine other than Administrator. I've checked the registry and they don't show "Alan" either.

I went ahead and made a new account named "Alan" and figured I could just transfer my files over thats when I noticed s... Read more

In our environment, we are 99% Windows 7, 0.9% Windows 8.1, and 0.1% Windows 10 (we are just beginning to test it). I'm aware that Microsoft introduced "schema v.2" for the Internet Explorer 11 Enterprise Mode Site List XML file (hereafter:
"EMSL file") for Windows 10 so that you can also control whether or not a URL opens in Edge or IE11.
In our environment, how I attempted to handle this was by creating two different EMSL files: one is schema v.1 for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 clients and the other is schema v.2 for Windows 10 clients. Then, I created two WMI filters: "Windows
10" and "Not Windows 10". I then created two different GPOs. One of them used the "Not Windows 10" WMI filter and pointed clients to the schema v.1 EMSL file and the other used the "Windows 10" WMI filter and
pointed clients to the schema v.2 EMSL file.
Well, I was just working on an issue, and I noticed in doing a GPResult that the aforementioned GPO for Windows 7 and 8.1 clients was being applied to my Windows 10 computer, not the correct Windows 10 one. When I looked, it appeared that WMI filtering
was not being taken into account. I don't use WMI filtering very much, so this is the first I'm learning that WMI filters only apply to computer policies and not user policies.
Given the requirements (different EMSL setting for users on different operating systems), how can I solve this issue in grou... Read more

Yesterday morning, my wife sat down at her desk and saw nothing but a bad image error window for an application. Computer had apparently rebooted overnight and in trying to x/close the window, wouldn't allow this, had to click on OK and that just presented a similar window for a different program - this happened over and over again, many times, apparently for every program that was trying to launch on startup. Searched and searched on another PC for what this might be - was finally able to run AVG which found something (I can't recall what) but indicated it couldn't be repaired/healed. Ended up trying multiple things throughout the day - ran Vipre according to those instructions in Safe Mode, ran SFS Scannow, Malwarebytes, AVG - all multiple times and in Safe Mode. Nothing (at least no threats related to fixing this problem) turned up. Found a post at this website/forum last night that referred to Combofix, but everything I see on this particular tool indicates that it isn't wise to use without expert assistance. This problem is like no other I've experienced, crippling. Help would be very much appreciated!
A bit more info - almost every single error indicated the program was "either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support". I believe above this the window sho... Hi all. I was hoping someone could answer my question here :)

I found similar concerns i.e. Missing Folders and all of them seemed to have found their missing files in folders like Qoobox\BackEnv or found.00x\dir0000.chk

Unfortunately, mine is of a different case.

I haven't installed anything on my PC since last month (Automatic Updates are off). But when I opened it today (Windows XP Professional SP2), my desktop was on auto log on and an error came out saying it could not log me on and it was going to use a temporary profile.

My files were all not there so I logged on to the Administrator account and copied all my desktop files from the other account. Everything seemed to work well until my brother rebooted the PC. Since my other profile was still on auto log on, that one opened and he dragged one of my folders from the Administrator account to the desktop of the other account.

He restarted it again and voila, since personal changes aren't recognized on the temporary profile, the folder was gone. I checked back on the Administrator account and it wasn't there as well. My other brother decided to butt in and did a system restore. He said he got the folder back. And I was a bit happy but when I opened the folder, all the files are gone. Don't know where they went.

I was wondering if there is any way at all, to recover them?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:System Restore got my folder back but no files were present

Hi, there may be a way and I am waiting for advice from a colleague. In the meantime, don't use the pc for anything else as this could make the files irretrievable. I'll get back to you soon if no-one else has any suggestions.

I did manage to get a FRST log in safe mode (shown below), but I’m not sure how useful the information in it will be. Same for the attached Addition.txt file.

I will be assisting you with your computer issues. All of my proposed fixes and suggestions must be approved by a fully-qualified Malware Removal Instructor. This will delay response times somewhat, but I will endeavor to respond within a reasonable time, normally 48 hours after your last post.
I will need some time to review your FRST logs and consult with the Malware Response Instructor (MRI) who will be assigned to supervise this topic. That could take a few days. Once I have reviewed my proposed response with the assigned MRI, I will reply to you with initial instructions.
Doing so would complicate the situation and it would cause further delays in resolving your issues. It could also potentially result in harm to your computer because my "fix" will be based on the FRST scan logs you have already submitted.

please help.

my cousin who was playing with my laptop made 2 new folders in the 20 GB External Disc Drive (EDD) which was connected and stored all the contents of that EDD in these 2 folders including perhaps sys files or files of that EDD.

now i dint know this and i safely removed the hardware and the EDD.

problem now is that after that, the EDD is not recognised by any computer.

i mean the USB is connecting properly and the icon for "safely remove hardware" is seen but on opening my computer or windows explorer, the drive is not seen.

i tried troubleshooting, where i found that the device status showing that it is working normal.

i uninstalled the driver and then disconnected the EDD, then on reconnecting , the drivers got installed on its own and again the icon for "safely remove hardware" is seen but the drive is not sensed by the computer.

can anyone help me even just to open this EDD in DOS mode or in a way that i can restore the original files the way they were, or can separate the contents of the folder that were made.

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Apparently corrupted files?I am having problems opening .doc and .xls and .jpg files in some (but not all) folders in my folder tree, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\My Documents\Folder X. However, Folders Y and Z are apparently unaffected. This has arisen only recently. My system is Windows XP (Home), and SP2 upgraded to SP3.MSWORD EXAMPLE:- On opening a Word file (whether from Word or from Windows Explorer) I receive this dialog box;"File Conversion - (filename).doc""Select the encoding that makes your document readable." The already selected button is "Other encoding" and the suggested code is "Japanese". The preview pane shows only an array of characters, all the same.On trying to select the button "Windows (Default)", the preview changes to a continuous array of lower-case xxxxxxx. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Auto-Select", the selected code returns itself to "Japanese" with the display as already noted above. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Western European (Windows)", the display reverts to the Windows Default style as already noted above, lines of xxxxxxx. I am unable to open the file.MSEXCEL EXAMPLE:- On opening an Excel file, all I get is an immensely long string of a character in ... Read more

This sounds like it might be a malware infection.

Have you run any scans lately?

Hi all, I'm new here and sure could use some help. Somehow I was infected with a nasty virus, but I think I managed to clean it up, or at least I think so. However, now I cannot do many things on my computer. I can't upload files to email, I can't change the wallpaper or screensaver on my computer, I can't open any .exe files, and most programs will not open.

I've tried many internet searches for these problems and tried to run various scans and registry fixes, but nothing seems to work. I'd really rather not use the repair install cd but I'm afraid I might have to.

So, it seems to me that files are corrupted and something is blocking me from using my computer. It is very frustrating and I could sure use your advice. Thank you.

Answer:Can't open most programs, upload files, change settings, or open .exe files

Oh and please don't ask me to download any .exe files, because I can't run them!!

i have a camera named "Canon PC 1264",,the pictures in the memory card are converted to some unknown file type with size GBz....some of the picture's folders are in the original conditions but 3 to 4 folder are change due to some known reason,,
Please suggest me someone a solution,,the pics are very important..

i have attached the screen-shot image of the folder

Answer:Files in Memry card converted to unreadable files with size in GBz

1. Are you using an SD Card Reader or the card slot in the PC?

2. Were you able to see the files/folders correctly from that SD Card and that PC before?

3. Are you able to see the folders and files in the camera itself with the SD card in your camera?

4. Does your camera come with any software with which you can download the contents of the SD card right from the camera? If so did you try it?

Just to eliminate your system fault as the reason, try reading the SD card on another computer and then report. (using a different SD card reader, if you are using a Card Reader)

Note:1. Do not format the SD card. 2. Do not run check disk.

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include
.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

Hey all,

I've been running my system under full load for twenty minutes.

I've got RMClock, CPU-Z and ATITool open to monitor, and I'm also using Orthos to stress my RAM and my CPU.

LeadTek 7950GT TDH 256MB -- 90 degrees
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Answer:Would you consider this advice to be reasonable?

This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

Answer:Any way of speeding up a pc with reasonable specs?

A four month old mid-range factory built computer.Functions exactly as it should, but ignoring the sound advice "If it aint broke don't fix it" i would like it to sound less like a collection of busy fans, which it has!I am prepared to spend some more and replace the PSU, CPU's fan and even the case fan.The video card fan seems blameless, stalling for one moment doesn't change the rushing noise. The PSU is probably the most justifiable replacement. It is a bog standard ATX of 300w.I wonder if click here will do the trick. (5th down the list) the 435W job)? The case fan is a standard affair drawing warm air and pushing it out of the back. A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. About 2 minutes in total here. ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

Way back in the dark ages of XP to get IE to open to nearly full screen every time instead of the smaller dfault size I used the Drag the sides method rather the the maximise button. This worked OK in XP but not in Win 7 running IE 8. Very frustrating!
The answer is to set your size by dragging then hold down the Alt key and press the "X" close button. Next time you open that link it will open the the size it was when you closed it!
If you want it to happen in all windows of IE 8 then in IE 8 click Tools, Internet Options, Go down to Tabs click Settings and check the button "Always open Pop up in a new window" and below that "A new tab in the current window"
Hope some may find that useful!

Do you mean the web browser itself opens in dimensions different than you want, or a web page you're viewing? If you're talking about the browser itself, right-click the shortcut you use to open it, and go to Properties. On the Shortcut tab, next to Run, change it from Maximized window to Normal window. Then modify the dimensions of the web browser the way you want. Next time you open it via that shortcut, it should open to the proper size.

Presario computer Media OS

How can I control the size of the window when IE is opened? It opens very small, I size it correctly for our needs but then the next time the computer is booted up and IE opened for the web, the small window size starts again?
How can I set it so it opens full screen everytime without resizing?

Answer:window size when IE open

An easy fix is to open IE, Press Shift and click on the link (which will open in a new window), press alt+tab to go back to the first window, close it, back to the new window you just opened, resize and reposition it then close it. It should open in the same state you left it in from here onwards. If it doesn't work, post back.

I believe that I have an on-board graphics card installed on my computer. Previously I was able to use Google Earth, but for some unknown reason I was no longer able to use this programme. Various alternatives was advised via Google help and error messages, but none seem to work.My remaining alternative (according to Google) is to get a 'better' graphics card.Any suggestions for a straight forward replacement. Not into high speed gaming or fancy high capacity 3 D's. Something cheap and simple, with possible links would be ideal.Final question: Is it possible to fit an additional graphics card to on-board system!.

Answer:Cheap and reasonable graphics card

Yes it is possible for you to have additional graphics, you will have to disable your onboard graphics once you have a new graphics card.Do you know what expansion slots you have available so that suggestions for graphics cards can be suited to your needs.

i have been told 1155 is going away, but i was told that just under a year ago and its not proving to be true. i just came into a little extra money, and am considering the best mother board i could get my hands on for 1155.

this is what i am looking at. and im hoping to get some suggestions and hopfuly hear from someone who has it- - ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Answer:help picking the best reasonable 1155 mobo available

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

Currently I am unemployed and so when I found out that my PC broke (this is a friend's) I was devastated to realize that Windows XP (Pro or HE) both range around $100 for the standard full edition. I am currently running it off of Bart PE but that isn't much help because I can't even view pics or access the internet. My other friend told me however that you can get Windows XP as cheap as $70 for the stripped down, "No Manual, No Colorful Box," edition. Problem is... I can't find this mythical store/site. Is he bluffing or does this place exist (and where?) Thanks heaps

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?! It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base. What they offered is even more absurd! They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it. We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!! Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

Answer:How easy is it to find RD-RAM at a reasonable price?

I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

I have Comcast cable. The Motorola Surfboard modem is connected to my desktop via Ethernet cable. I occasionally have to work with friend's laptops, and need to connect to the Web wirelessly, so am considering getting a wireless router. Trouble is, I can't find much info on the Web that tells me what I need, and prices go from $25 to $1200. I figure I only need something very simple, since I have no home network or multiple computers throughout the house.

So, can anyone recommend a good and relatively inexpensive router? Review in PC World liked the Belkin N, but have no idea if that's suitable or overkill or what.

My other question is how much does it cost to upgrade Vista 32bit to Vista 64bit? My software source (school) only sells the 32bit versions (for hella cheap).

Should I suck it up and get Vista Home 64bit from Newegg for $99 or try to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit (which hopefully would be cheaper)?

Answer:what's a reasonable price for vista home 64?

Buy the 32bit version from your school, and acquire a 64bit disc by other means. Your serial will work on either (Vista/Win7 are both this way).

My wireless router does not seem to be working for Internet connectivty despite many reboots. It's (Netgear fm114p) been in use for less about 10 months. The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

I am using Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit. I would like to have IE10 and other windows open in the same position and size each time. The only options appear to be a scrunched down window or full screen. I notice if I close a program in full screen, it will open the next time in full screen.

If I do not have the program in full screen, but have adjusted size and position, it will open next time in the default size and location.

I have tried holding shift while resizing and then closing from the Red X.
I have tried holding ctl while resizing and then closing from the Rex X.
I have tried resizing and then holding shift while pressing the Red X and a second time using control while pressing the red x.

Nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?

Answer:How can you set windows to open in same size and location

Sometimes moving and sizing at the same time means it forgets what you want. Try moving, closing by using "File > Exit" instead of the X, re-open re-size without moving and doing "File > Exit" again. I've found that will sometimes fix that problem. Windows are supposed to re-open in the same spot and size as they were closed in, but sometimes they need help remembering....

I'm running IE7, and whenever I access ANY webpage, it opens to the size it was when i closed it out while reduced. No problem for those pages that I have closed out while full size. It only happens in web pages that I've closed out while reduced. It's really just a minor annoyance, but I don't like it and I'd like to fix it. Anybody?

Answer:web pages won't open in full size

Up until yesterday when IE7 nearly hosed my system, I used to scoff at IE7 problems as I seldom use any version of IE anyway and have it loaded on all systems. BUt on 1 unit IE7 took over most of the media icons and then I could not play mp3's or avi's. To add to it a few days earlier I was getting a boot error that caused me to remove Sonic 7.0 which fixed problem, but I am now wondering if IE7 wasn't the real issue there too as well so out it came.

I am wanting to open a window to a specific size, such as 1280x800. I am basicly wanting to see what it would look like on a netbook. I know the physical size won't be accurate but I am wanting to see how the resolution will look like.

I know I could set the screen resolution to the specific Res that I want to checkout but I don't want to do it that way.

Answer:How do I open a window thats a specific size?

Sizer or AutoSizer, or you could just use a screen ruler to measure the pixels.

You could also use some app like WinSplit or Maxto.

Hey everyone, I'm having a little trouble getting my head around javascript. I made a website for someone, and they want the site to open in a window that is sized to the site, so i want the browser to fit to the site. I understand I need to use the method? But I don't really understand it. I try to use it and i just get a "page cannot be displayed" message., name [, features])

where URL is, i have not published the site yet, so is there a way to make this method work with a relative location rather than a URL (because the site isn't acutually up online yet) if that makes sense.

I just can't get this method to work correctly. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks in advance

Why does it always open to some small window in same spot on the screen?
Does it do this for you?

Is there a way to make it open to you last closed size? Or just open maximized?

Answer:IE8 ¬ďOpen in New Window¬Ē size setting?

IE 8 will open to the size and location that the last session was at when closed. So, one needs to open a fresh session, to drag to size and location and then exit IE.

Do NOT use the Maximize button but drag the corners to the size you want. But remember that if you close any different sized session last, then that will be your NEXT opening size.

I wish to use the instruction 'Open in New Window' and I would like to stipulate the size of the new window. At the moment the new window will open at exactly the same size and position as the existing open window and covers it from view completely. Is it possible to nominate a size to the new window, and is it possible to instruct the window to be opened offset from a prevously opened window? Regards
