Running MS-DOS based application on Windows XP

Question: Running MS-DOS based application on Windows XP

Greeting,

I'm trying to run an application, named Da51, STK, and POS, which are written in MS-DOS based since 20 years ago.

Now here's the thing, I tried to right-click on the .exe file.
- A box (which suppose to be ms-dos box) pop-up and immediately disappeared.

I execute command.com, I went to that folder, and manually type in the command myself.
- 1st attempt, nothing happen
- 2nd attempt, an error message pop up.

The NTVDM CPU has encoutered an illegal instruction.
CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 0e 02 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

p/s: Please take note that, all these applications are RUNNING WELL in Windows 98.

I research online, went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314106 and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314495. But both doesn't really solve my problem.

I manage to run command.com. However, I'm confused with this part.

Check program-specific issues
The following functions do not work in Windows XP:
• All MS-DOS functions except task-switching API (application programming interface) functions are supported.
• Block mode device drivers are not supported. Block devices are not supported, so MS-DOS I/O control (IOCTL) APIs that deal with block devices and SETDPB functions are not supported.
• Interrupt 10 function 1A returns 0; all other functions are passed to read-only memory (ROM).
• Interrupt 13 calls that deal with prohibited disk access are not supported.
• Interrupt 18 (ROM BASIC) generates a message that says that ROM BASIC is not supported.
• Interrupt 19 does not restart the computer, but cleanly closes the current virtual DOS machine (VDM).
• Interrupt 2F, which deals with the DOSKEY program callouts (AX = 4800), is not supported.
• Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX) functions 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, E, and F are not supported.
• The 16-bit Windows subsystem on an x86 computer supports enhanced mode programs; it does not, however, support 16-bit virtual device drivers (VxDs). The subsystem on a non-x86 computer emulates the Intel 40486 instruction set, which lets the computer run Enhanced-mode programs, such as Microsoft Visual Basic, on reduced instruction set computers (RISC).

I have no clue how to check whether the programs applied to the conditions above. So, if it applies to any of them, does that mean I can totally forget about my applications for business? Or go back to Windows 98?

2nd application, I tried to run it. Again, in windows explorer, it shows up something and immediately shut down. I went into command prompt, I type it manually, and this is what I had.

run-time error R6003

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks and Regards,

Preferred Solution: Running MS-DOS based application on Windows XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A user has resized a window within a hosted web application to the point where it is exactly OK/too small, meaning it flickers back and forth between having scroll bars and not. While it is in this state, it essentially freezes out any other commands in the window or ability to resize it. Are there any ways to interupt this, delete application window size preferences or other ideas? I know this is data that is stored locally as I can execute the same functions on another PC sucessfully. This is viewing of a web hosted PC based medical application by a standard PC running Windows 7, IE9. Is there a way to delete user preferences for the application so it will default to orginal window sizing?

Thanks!

Answer:Re-Sizing of Web Based Application Windows

As a workaround, you could try a free program I use myself to automatically resize your different applications. I know how annoying this can be, in my case, especially for Internet Explorer.

Hi all,

I have read online that there is a solution for ADO-base application to work from top-down level, i.e, Win 7 to Win XP etc. However, I would like to know is there a solution to solve a bottom-up level problem for ADO application to work. A
short background story, I'm now working on a VB6 project which is running perfectly fine in Win XP ver. However, when I move my project from XP to Win 7 SP1 (Enterprise Version), and I tried to recompile it, I got the
"xx_deprecated" error.
I learn that using msado60_Backcompat.tlb is able to solve the top-down issue. So what about bottom-up? Does this method works too? Hope any gurus here can advise on me this issue. Thank you very much.

Hi. Can a C++ program (that has been converted to an .EXE) run on all windows-based computers?

What limitations are there, if any??

Thanks!

Answer:.EXE's running on all windows-based computers?

Once the C++ source code has been compiled to an executable for the Windows environment it will be able to run on any compatible version of Windows as long as all the executable has access to all the dependancies it needs.
A very simple DOS C++ program will most likely run on most versions of Windows in an executable. Bigger programs that require certain libraries at run-time (like certain DLL's) will require the DLLs to be accessible by each system it is run on.
A windows application created with, for instance, Visual C++ that is designed to run under Windows may have some of these dependancies and will require you to include them in a package.
Your question is fairly vague as to:
By Windows do you mean any version of Windows from say Win95 to Win2003 and WinXP with every release inbetween?
Are you talking about DOS style C++ programs that run in a command line environment or full Windows style programs taking advantage of the Windows API.

Hopefully the above will be applicable and help you. If not let us know some more details and we'll try and give you a specific response.

Cheers

i've read many tutorials and wiki's about this, and it seems it is possible. How likely is it that all the hardware will work and that you can actually get a successful dual booting windows and mac computer on one that started windows??

i know the standards of how to do it, partition your drive then format that partition to FAT and then achieve the DMG of mac os x and convert it to iso and then i don't know where to go from there, so if you know, can you please help?

I am trying to run a cobol program dos-based in windows 7. I am getting the error "cobol run time library not installed, file not found", then program closes. Programs and files are on network. I had managed to make it work somehow, now it has stopped doing so, and I have no reason why.I am running the batch file, which maps drives correctly, in compatibility mode, as administrator. It will run in XP mode/Virtual PC, but there are many users who would not be able to run it that way. Thanks for any suggestion.

Answer:Error running DOS-based COBOL in Windows 7

I'd guess it was the path if you did have it working. I'd map a network share to each computer and then run it from a mapped drive, the program would have to be on the share and I'd guess only 32 bit systems would run it. Otherwise you'd have to run dosbox or setup a shared VM to run it vnc or remote desktop."The era of big government is over," said Clinton 1996

Hi all,

I am currently on a voluntary placement in Indonesia helping out an NGO with some I.T. They have a windows 2003 server with the following specs thats causing me some grief, and I was hoping you could help

Specs
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-8I848P775-G
CPU: Intel pentium 4 775
GPU: Radeon 9250 128MB DDR 64-bit
HD: Seagate barricuda 7200: 1x 120GB, 1x320GB
PSU: 400w XA SIMBIO
RAM: 1GB Hynix DDR PC3200
OS : Windows server 2003

Problem
The problem is very slow running and slow response times. The PC POSTs normally, but loading of the operating system is very slow. It takes 1-2 minutes from POST to login screen. Loading then takes a long time. After this, I can open the start menu, bit it is a little slow. Opening the programs sub-menu is then very very slow, causing the computer to freeze. Any intensive task also causes the computer to freeze for a long time before the operation is completed.

What I have Tried
I opened the box up to check for dust. Its a pretty clean machine. CPU temperature is approx 40c according to BIOS system monitor. Several reboots have of course been tried. I have tried loading fail-safe defaults. Task manager shows no abnormal processes or excessively high usage for any processes.
I have loaded msconfig and switched to minimal boot. ... Read more

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Thanks

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

I have a neat idea that I would like to try out. Caution this is going to get nerdy not just geeky. I play D&D and my group uses a program that has our characters on it. It's a very old program made for Win 95 but I have made it work in everything from Linux to Vista.

I want to find a way to put the program online so my group can all edit their characters instead of doing it last minute before we play. I have a web server and hosting so thats no issue. My first thought is to use a VPN or terminal services but is there a way to just host the application by it's self? What I would like is something as non technical as having a desktop icon they can just click and it opens the program as if it's local.

Answer:make an application web based

Sure, just rewrite it in some language your web server can run and have it save all its data in an appropriate database accessible to the web server.

If you're talking about just putting the .exe on your website, it doesn't really work that way. By default, Windows won't run programs from the internet, and the web server won't allow you to write data to it. Depending on how the app works, you may be able to give each person a copy and configure it to save its data remotely in a central location. It might be possible to do something like Sysinternals Live, but I doubt you'd be able to do with just regular hosted webspace. That also doesn't take into account the saving/sharing of data, just the remote access to the .exe.

I posted in this forum as I feel this is security related. Mods move if need be.

I'm looking for a web based (preferably PHP) change log program. It should do the following:

1. Be simple!
2. Allow people to enter descriptions of basic system changes
3. Changes should have categories by systems and can be filtered as such.
4. Time stamp the actions and have a "master display" where all changes can be viewed
5. LDAP authentication would be nice.

Does such a thing exist? My goggling has failed due to "change log" being such a popular term.

I have a 16-bit application that I want to run...problem is I have 64-bit Windows 10 installed and it won't run it. I installed a trial of Windows 10 32-bit on a spare drive and can get it to work perfectly, but I don't want to run at 32-bit outside of this application. I have also tried running virtual machine/XP Mode, but I can't get it to span my two screens (i.e. limited to one monitor). I've also tried Dosbox, but resolution is horrible, and again limited to one screen.

Before I buy another Windows product key, wondering if there are any other solutions that I haven't thought of.

Also, if I do get a second copy of Windows I want to run it off a separate hard drive (i.e. "main" with Windows 64-bit and "spare" with Windows 32-bit). Other than going into the bios and changing the boot priority between the two, is there a way to bring up a selection screen when booting? Or even better, something similar to when you install the OS from disk, it will boot normally unless you press a key.

Answer:Running a 16 bit application in Windows 10

Virtualbox - and then install whatever OS you need on it.

That way.. you boot to your normal Windows 10. Then if you want to run that program, you just start up Virtualbox and it will load the OS on it in a VM and away you go.

For the pharmacy I have made an application to support a drug preparation. This application is used in public pharmacies as well as in hospitals and industry.
This is a web-based application. So the installation has been done on the server with a configuration within IIS.
The clients start the application in InternetExplorer.
Why InternetExplorer? Because the client's preparation protocols, raw materials need to be weighed and labels must be printed. Hereby I use self-programmed ActiveX controls. And other browsers do not support ActiveX controls.
The web-based application is generally found to be good.
As Edge is increasingly "pushing", InternetExplorer seems to be the cornerstone, as well as the application described above.
My questions are now:
- How long are web-based applications still supported?
- Will Edge support ActiveX controls in the future?
- Is there an alternative?
I would appreciate if there were sound answers to the above questions.
Sincerely,
Wim

I have a web based application and want it to port it on Windows Vista . What are the procedures I must follow to check for its compliance on safe deployment on Vista?

Answer:Web Based Application Compliance Testing

Let's see. I have no clue, but if I think about it, it must be:
Does your web server software work properly in Vista?
Which flavor of Vista do you plan on using?
Do you have the hardware to support it?
Have you checked into any of the documentation?
If you have checked into the documentation, promptly ignore it, set up your own test box, and see how things shake out. If what you find out on your own correlates with the documentation, then you might start to have some confidence.

That's where I would start if it were me. Essentially, a web service comes down to the web-server software, some sort of a middle tier, and I would imagine some sort of database. Are they compatible with Vista?

Hello,

I'm trying to set up a new computer, and unfortunately there are two MS-DOS design programs that need to run on it. We've been running these programs on an old MS-DOS 6.0 PC forever and finally decided it's time to get rid of that computer. I tried installing the MS-DOS under VirtualBox, but had continuous problems completing the installation (usually when the computer asked for Disk #2, it wouldn't recognize that the disk was present). I looked at VirtualPC 2007, but since they no longer support the MS-DOS addons for mouse emultation and shared directories, I ended up installing DOS to VirtualPC 2004 with no problems.

So here's the problem, each of the legacy programs requires its own Parallel Port Dongle (we have both of these and they work fine on the older DOS computer). When everything is finally set up, one of the programs runs and recognizes its dongle, but the second one does not. (I also tried DOSBOX, but then neither program detected its dongle).

Can anyone suggest a way for me to get this working, or at least some troubleshooting steps I can take? I have so far tried rearranging the dongles, installing different versions of the software (we had a few upgrade packs), slowing down the software using moslo, and monitoring the parallel port to try and see if the software and the dongle are talking at all. I tried monitoring the Parallel port with PortMon, but it didn't display any communications at all (even with the program... Read more

Hi,

Could anyone tell me which of the many languages I should/could use to develop a browser based application meant to support database functions (store/retreival to local disk of user inputs) and that could read and send data off the host PC serial port. I'm not looking for client/server stuff, just a plain browser based application running on a local machine for accessing its local serial port and sending/storing data to or from it. I could do it using WinAPI or MFC but I would prefer to have the familiar web based application instead.

I'm not familiar with ASP.NET, PHP, XML, SQL etc... so I wonder if any of them could dot the job ??

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I want to assign a custom icon to every file type no matter what the associated app is. I can change individual default icons, but they get overwritten by the application icon. Is it possible to do this :

And if so, how ? (I want to keep the file associations: .css and .txt are still getting open by Sublime, .ini by WordPad and so on ...)

Theoretically speaking, if different types of malware files where to penetrate past Kapsersky's protection and get placed into "Low Restricted", how much damage is possible under default settings?

Theoretically speaking, damage same as trusted group. Low restricted is basically trusted group in default settings (Automatic mode). Application control is for interactive mode, in which the prompts gets issued, then Low restricted is useful as much as the user knows.

I have had this problem a few times now; once when I first go tthe computer, and again when I put in a completely new hard drive and reinstalled Windows and Office 2003 (prior HD died). Basically what happens is when I load a few applications (random apps, but the same ones), every time I load them, the Windows installer starts to run. It also happens when I select different things in the app. The messages I get:

"Windows installer - preparing to install"

then

"Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 - Please wiat while Windows configures Mcirosoft Office Standard Edition 2003"
-blue bar goes to completion, then:

"Error 2908. An internal error has occured." Then gives a bunhc of letters and #s, and tells me to contact microsoft support.

I tried to reinstall Office, but it always comes back eventually. Installer cleanup tool didnt work either, although maybe I used the wrong one? Any ideas?

I have a HP Pavilion dv6t 7000 quad edition with i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30 8 gb RAM and a nvidia 650 m gt, running Windows 7 64 bit edition.
I got the laptop last week, but didn't get to test it or anything because of the hurricane.

I have installed all windows update, updated all drivers and such.

Whenever I run a game with 3D application, my computer freezes up and the sound loops. At first I thought it was the game's fault, but it happened with both Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2, so I thought it was a drivers issue.

I first installed the Windows Update graphic drivers, that didn't work, so I reformatted and installed official nVidia drivers. That didn't work either, so I reformatted again, and installed the official HP drivers by scanning my computer for the correct ones.

Then I proceeded to think that it was a overheating issue, and so I downloaded FluidMark and ran the program. It was ok for a minute or two, then crashed. I ran it again, and made note that it crashed around 56 degrees. I ran it again (using different settings) and it crashed around 56 degrees (Celsius(is 56 degrees Celsisus considered hot?)).

I have no idea what else to look for, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If it is an overheating issue, can I fix it myself, or will that void my warranty.

If I can fix it myself, can anyone give me some pointers?

If you need any further information, just ask.

Houston, I have a problem. It started yesterday when attempting to log on to a user account, McAffee states that it detected a virus and recommends a scan. I click 'ok' once or twice and the following message appears: application failed to initialize (0xc0000005).

After reading through some of your posted solutions, I had to C-A-D to get task manager up so I could run Microsoft Anti-Spyware. It detected one and I removed it. I then started a McAffee scan and it found another one (maybe more, but I fell asleep waiting for it to finish). When I logged back in, McAffee was saying the same thing, I C-A-D and a c:\ window appears saying c:\WINDOWS\temp\setup.exe

It has been like this for 45+ minutes. I can attempt to shut it down, and it asks if you're sure (which I am not) so I cancelled out to let it run. The cursor inside the c:\ box appears to be moving around every 30 to 90 seconds. . . leading me to believe that it is doing something.

When I fire McAffee backup, I cannot find the one file it found before I fell asleep (not in quarentine anyway).

Any recommendations?

HI There,

I'm looking for a simple windows service that I can schedule to run that will do the following:

1.  Search a .log file for a given phrase - "fail" for example.
2.  If this is found, send an email and alert (screen popup) to the administrators.

I may need to resort to a batch file do this, but I hope was hoping something already existed and I could have this up and running very quickly.

Please let me know if you know of anything that fits the bill.

Thanks.

Answer:Looking for an application that searches in a file and emails based on finding

This is a simple batch file if you have an e-mailer that lets you send from the command line.  I haven't tried this in ages on Windows, so I don't know which one(s) might be available.

You should take a look at the post, How to create a command-line toolkit for Windows, on these very forums, paying special attention to the "grep" command that's part of UnixUtils.  Grep allows you to do the kind of search for text content you're seeking with ease.  You can then either query the status code returned after the command or redirect the output of the command to a file, and check that its size is not 0 bytes, to determine whether it found what you're looking for.  A simple 'if' construction afterward to trigger the e-mail to be sent and you're done.

You may prefer to go with installing Cygwin rather than the UnixUtils if you want something more current and want to have a more extensive set of Unix commands available to you under Windows.

I have a web-based application that when I attempt to perform a function, brings up the IE11 context menu. The application's menu also appears (which is what I want), but in order to proceed with my task, I have to kill the IE menu via Task Manager.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've attached a picture.

Hi All,

Im trying to install AT&T application which is a profile based application. Means it installs in the user profile directly instead of other location.

My Problem is user dont have the admin access, either i need to use my ID or administrator ID. Which installs application into Appdata\Local folder which wont be accessible by other users.
How to i enable the application for other users as well without providing admin access

Answer:Installing profile based application in other users folder

What ATT app is this? If it's for accessing the internet then that doesn't require any installed program, just plug in the wire or access wireless signal via icon in SYstem Tray. Any installed program beyond this for this purpose is bloatware.

But once we know what the program is for exactly we can help you better.

am deploying an application on Windows 8.1 which has SSO enabled (uses NTLM). There are two examples: good and bad. The only difference that has been determined between the two is that in a failure scenario, the wireshark trace show that NTLM negotation
is wrapped up by the GSS-API Generic API.

In case of good login (again on Windows 8.1) there are no GSS-API messages. It has simple NTLM Secure Service Provider message (no GSS-API).

Additionally, in a bad trace i have also seen the INITIATOR_NEGO and INITIATOR_META_DATA.

Both these cases and login happen with same Os (8.1), same client application. In order to determine if this is application problem, i want to find a way in which i can make the bad login scenario testwithout the
GSS-API wrapper. But i cannot find a way to disable it on the OS.

There should be one i believe, because two same OS, one uses GSS-API one does not. Anyone can help me with this and share ideas?

Hi there are a lot of software that can run your application in stealth mode but is there a way where you can hide and run your application by editing your registry ..

Thanks hope I can get a good response

Answer:Help me to hide application running in stealth using windows registry

What do you mean by stealth mode?
But if I understand your question at all the answer would be no. Applications have ultimate control over how they will be displayed and how they will operate. Nothing in the registry can force an application to do anything.

Answer:Windows 10 Pro High Memory Usage When Running An Application

Do the following in that computer:
Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.
After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.
Information about your computer will appear.
Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

If that computer is a factory-brand one, advise what brand name and model name and model number it is.

---------------------------------------------------------------

We don't know how you use that computer and what's installed in it, so that may a reason for the high memory usage.
The Google Chrome browser is also known to be a memory hog.

Hi there.

I have a taskbar problem, where it wouldn't show any of my application windows opened/running. For example, if I were to open a word document, my task bar remains blank, and I would not have a clue if it were actually opened unless it's the window at the 'top' (i.e. I can only access it using alt+tab). It would show the quick launch toolbar, the language bar etc, but just simply none of the applications I open. I suspect it has something to do with the toolbars not terminating... you know how you can have a choice on how many icons of a toolbar you want to see just by resizing it? Well the resizing function is not available.

I was wondering if anyone had encountered a similar situation and know how to troubleshoot it.

Thanks.

My application which is in Startup folder is not started after restarting the computer. I find some solutions on internet like
1. Hkey_Local_Machine\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ System\ Set EnableLUA to 0 (See at right side - By Default it is set to 1)
2. Set User Access Control settings to lowest level
When i do this settings, my application which is in start up folder, application runs when machine restarts every time.. But this setting inhibit the operation of some MS programs like MS-Edge, Photo-Viewer, Skype Video etc. Resetting to default "1" and restart PC would resolved it. We need to look for better solution to this "security measure" by later Windows version.. Please guide me with better solution

Since i upgraded my Lenovo ideapad Y50-70 to Windows 10 i'm finding problems when i play games like Warthunder or World of Tanks. Sometimes i get the following error message from the notification-screen: Windows 10 has find a kernel problem and has automatically been fixed. And then it shuts down the game/application. Sometimes Warthunder tries to run the game in DirectX 9.0 and then it can't use the nvidea card at all.. Is there anyone which knows a fix for this? Currently i have tried lots of things like: - Deinstall Nvidea GeForce (& all it's components) and performing a clean install. - Installing the previously best-known running Nvidea GeForce version. Both these options didn't work out. Hello.

Today I have a problem with an application running on windows 7, using Windows XP SP2.

The operating system I use is Windows 7 64-bit. The original application was running on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 operating system. When I run the application using Service Pack 2, it loads up after about 2-3 minutes after clicking on it.

When I click a button though, it just freezes up and doesn't respond. Sometimes it doesn't even say "Not Responding" unless I proceed to task manager to close it.

Is there anyone out there that can fix this problem?

Thank you.

Windows XP wasn't really meant for DOS based programs. I haven't had any troubles getting them to work, I have old games as well as various other DOS programs. Things that require access to the hard drive (As in checking boot info or making modifications etc etc..) will not work, but games and simpler programs will.

Hi Guys,
Hoping for some help with an idea...
I've got 2 modules in Access 2010 that use Word Automation to generate two different word documents when you click on one of the two buttons. i.e Code1 is run when Button1 is clicked and Doc1 is generated, Code2 is run when Button2 is clicked and Doc2 is generated.

The documents are populated by bookmarks; the names of which correspond to names in the code.
What I am wondering is...

Is there a way to run both these modules from one button based on criteria on the form on which the button sits. e.g.
If the value of a field name, lets call the field name "Type" = the value "Storage" then run Code1 or if the field name's value is Shipping then run Code2.

Any help gratefully accepted
Thanks
Karen

The computer is running win98 se with nav 2001
Upon boot up the systems gets a network 32 error wen trying to acces a dosbased program. the usre has to abort and then gets the following windows message

The program has performed an illegal operation....

The program encountered a genreal protection exception

Fault location 0028:c02488920
Faulting component dosmgr[0f] + 000002B8
Interupts in service none

Once I click OK I can then access the dos program.

There are times that I also have problems printing to a printer though the dos program. The printer is mapped using both novell and windows. If I print right after I log on it works fine but if wait for a couple of hours and then print my system locks up. This only happens when prointing to my HP laser printer and not the three line printers attached to this computer via the nework. Also if I recapture the printer using Novell client for win98 there is never a problem.

any suggestions (besides getting rid of the Dos program and Novell)

Here's a sample
Name/Order

Record 1 - John Smith #23 - want 1
Record 2 -John Smith #29 - want 2
Record 3 -John Smith #27 - want 3
Record 4 -Fred Jones #24 - want 1
Record 5 -Fred Jones #25 - want 2

So what I want is for each row of data to place a count #. So for record 1 it would have 1, record 2 would be 2, records 3 would be 3, record 4 would be 1 and record 5 would be 2.

I need a count of records for each name. I do not want a subtotal. I need it to actually list out 1,2,3, 1,2.

I can do this in Crystal reports - but I really need this is Access.
Ideas?

Just bought used Acer Aspire One Happy2-13647 netbook with Win7 Home Premium fresh install. I installed my own copy of MS Office 2003. Ran Windows Update. Results say there are 177 "important" updates to install, but most are for "x64-based systems." Are these necessary when my netbook OS is Win7 32-bit? BTW, my netbook has an Intel atom N570 CPU which is 64-bit capable, but max RAM is only 2GB, so not practical to attempt an upgrade to 64-bit OS. I plan to stay with the 32-bit OS currently installed. Thanks.

Do not install them no matter what. If you install the updates for x64 it will mess up your system real bad.

Hi, i've recently been doing work with an internet cafe and we need a solution for re-imaging. I have an image created with ghost but I have no software to use to distribute it and the client PC's only have CD-R/RW and the image is 4.3GB.

I tried to use Ghost recovery disk to map the network drive where I have the image but the recovery disk didn't couldn't detect my network card (I'm guessing it didn't support the specific NIC of the client PC's)
I need a software solution that will let me re-image any computer from a centralized location (server) over the network. We have about 40-50 client PC's. So far we have been doing manual installs (The entire server crashed and took all the old software with it so we're starting from scratch)

If anyone could help, we could open this business a lot sooner than expected with software that can do this!

Thanks

Answer:Need: Server-based re-imaging application (Remotely Re-image clients from server)

A free solution would clonezilla or even RIS or WDS
EDIT: You also might want to look into Steady State

Hello ,

I have a application exe from my work that will only run and install on a 32 bit OS. I would like to use it on my W7 64 bit OS. I have tried right clicking on properties and then going to compatibility tab...then running it in XP or Vista mode none of them worked. I still get this error... this version of this file is not capable of running on a 64 bit OS. Is there anything else I can try? The exe ran fine with XP and Vista 32 bit.

Answer:Running a 32 bit application exe with 64 bit OS

What application is it?

most programs that will run on x32 and x64 operating systems usually have both install packages on the exe if it doesn't then you either need to get the x64 version or you are going to have to have to install a x32 version of xp or vista on another partion of your computer so you can at least use it some how.

Hello TechSpot

In Europe there is a new law requiring to make a special document for proffesional transactions called a DCA/DAE through the internet, instead of the paper document that has always been used.

So our government issues a USB Key with an application on it.
The problem is when i double click this application the computer loads (seemingly, goes slow, makes noise and mouse cursor change to thinking cursor) but nothing actually happens, no window, no error nothing in task manager, like i never clicked the app.

At our office we have 5 computers where 4 of them run windows 7. On one of these computers with windows 7, the USB key works perfectly fine, program runs and can issue the documents.

But take any other computer in the office and we get the above mentioned problem ! XP and Windows 7, no difference. either computer, or laptop, no difference.

Anyone has a good idea of what may cause this ?

Answer:USB application loading but not running

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
I have a 16 bit application that I developed with Borland Turbo C++ on XP.
I have installed XP mode and reloaded Borland and my application, but when I try to run it, nothing appears to happen.
When I run it under the Borland Debugger I get the message:

An application has attempted to access the keyboard or mouse hardware as a 16 bit Windows application, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly.

This comes after my latest reinstall of W7 after some very strange errors started cropping up.
This never happened in previous installs of XP Mode.
I have also installed my copy of XP SP3 using VirtualBox, and have got exactly the same message.

I originally saw this message when I installed the Borland software on W7 and tried to run it from there, but it has ALWAYS worked in XP Mode in the past.

What has changed?

Hello guys..

Ok, so the problem is when i'm running any app like Google Chrome, Windows Live Messenger, or any other, even sometimes when i open a windows folder (Explorer.exe), it freezes for a while (i'd say for 1 minute) and then *puff* continues running, and later happens again, and again.... Its been happening for like a week now, and before that i didn't have this problem ... So my guess is some freaking windows update, but i hope you can help me solve this issue.

Here are my DESKTOP specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.3 GHz 2.3 GHz

Intel(R) G41 Express Chipset

Note that i recently bought this computer

I really hope you guys can help me out...

first of all, i have installed windows xp sp3 which i upgraded at microsoft website

after installing the upgraded windows, i installed a vista pack to make my windows look like vista and i even installed google desktop (if this information helps)

the problem is all of my current running application seem to go out of their window after a certain period running it..for instance as i'm typing this post my mozilla goes out from it and i have to click it back to continue my typing
this even happen when i'm playing games when suddenly the game minimizes and i have to maximize the game back to continue play
i just found out that the problem occurs when i run my mozilla firefox 3..i tend to leave tabs open and go on to other tabs when surfing and currently there are 3 windows of firefox..can that cause the probem?

is there any solution to this problem because i really dont want to format my computer again

Hi all,
yesterday i was performing some routing maintenance on my pc, and i noticed there was an evernt log showing an error of an application that was stored in the path. (Please note i didnt mistype VLC).
C:\Users\{myuser}\Appdata\roaming\LVC\lvc.exe
It was always giving me an error code 0x0000005. I am worried if this is some sort of virus.
when i checked with a windows defender and avg i got no virus. It was also using the visual basic command line script process when i checked task manager.
What else could i do to check out the problem?
Thanks

EDIT: I tried searching online, but i found no results

Answer:Unknown application running on my pc

Searching with Startpage shows one link to a fix for some virus and a couple of links to Garmin GPS software. Nothing else of substance.
Lycos found an article about an old Server 2000 bug and a Lee Van Clief screensaver.
I'd try every search engine you can think of until something makes sense.

When you change the following registry value to "1", is FIPS enabled in realtime or does the machine need to be rebooted?

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FIPSAlgorithmPolicy\Enabled

We require FIPS 140-2 compliance on all machines running WinZip. I was wondering if it was possible to enable FIPS when WinZip is opened. FIPS breaks several sites, applications, etc in our environment and trying to find the best way to be FIPS compliant so
that WinZip runs in FIPS mode. FIPS is not needed for anything other than WinZip at this point. Any suggestions?

Greetings
Is there a switch for running an application as an administrator like: regedit /a or regedit /admin?
thanks

Answer:switch for running an application as administrator?

Hello zivshosh,

It depends on how you are wanting to do this.

Usually, you could just right click on the program .exe or it's shortcut and click on "Run as administrator".

Here are some other options in the tutorial below as well. Option Five or SIX could be good for this.

Run as Administrator - in Windows 8

Hope this helps,

Dear forumers,

I have an issue with a non-unicode program. I want to learn to type the Russian standard keyboard layout (ЙЦУКЕН) so have an application which teaches me called Anykey 1.02 Demo. The problem is that this is not a fully unicode application and since my system is not set to russian at Control Panel -> Regional Settings -> Advanced tab, Anykey won't display cyrillic letters correctly, it shows questionmarks instead. Of course, it'd be simple to just set up the system run non-unicode applications in Russian, but it also messes up everything (another non-unicode apps). It's not really comfortable to restart the system every time I want to practice by Anykey, so I'm asking if there's any way to run an application (only one, separately from the other) with different non-unicode settings (eg. a command or *.manifest file or sg.)?

Thanks for your help

Answer:how can i have a .exe application running in a HOSTING SERVER?

Do you mean, 'How can I run this Appl on SOMEONE ELSE'S server 24/7?'

Well, you have to get the permission of the server owner/Operator, and arrange to upload the code to them. They'll manage the Appl from their end.

Hello! I just recently joined this site and this is my first post. I just have one question, hope somebody can help me with this. I'm developing this application wherein an application(not mine) will pass a value(in this case, a phone number) to my application. Once received, my application will search and pull from the database any other information regarding this number. I am using VB6 as front end and SQL Server 2000 as backend. Please note that my application is running when the value is passed. Please help..

Answer:Passing Values to a running VB application

In normal situations where the apps are running on the same computer...
Use SendMessage with WM_USER. Look up SendMessage with google.

Getting the handle to the other app is where you need to be creative.
A) Have the other app get your window handle by window text.
B) Have the other app read a text document that your program wrote when it started with the handle written in it.

In your case. The only way I can think to do it is by a shared file containing the phone numebr to look up. Have the number producing app append to a text document, the phone number/separated by a certain character; #8973458754#3457658324...
Have your app check that file for numbers on a loop making sure to sleep for 5 seconds or so - Sleep(5000) to give the number producing app a chance to open the file and write numbers. When your app reads the first number, remove it and write the text document anew. That is the short explanation. There are other details dealing with writing and reading files that I didn't get into.

Hi,
I am developing a Java based application and need to make sure that if it crashes, it comes back on. I tried setting it up as a service, but as it requires interaction with the user, the "Interactive Services Detection" is tripped when I try to bring it up.

My thoughts right now are to have it update a text file periodically and have a service monitor that text file. If the file has not been updated, then the service runs a script which reopens the application... does anyone know if there is an easier way of doing this? (or if this will even work?)

Thanks!

Answer:How do I keep a Java Application running at all times?

Create one user app and one service app. The service app checks on the status of the user app and restarts it - if need be.

Hi

I have Windows 10 v1703 and I would need that an application is always run with administrative privileges even when it is run by a user who has a Users's account.

So, how should I do this?

Thanks

Bye

Answer:Running always an application with administrative privileges

You may want to take a look at the following tutorial, It's designed to run a program at startup without triggering the UAC prompt but you should be able to create a shortcut for the user to run on demand

Create Elevated Shortcut without UAC prompt in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials

Any issues and you may be best posting in the actual tutorial to allow Shawn to take a look at when he's online

Hello, new and clueless user here.

Alright i played Artemis yesterday just fine, had to restart for network stuff, still everything fine. After playing for 2 hours i stopped and wanted to queue for a quick match of CS:GO. after 5mins in BSOD 124. Boot again get back in the match same thing 5mins later. Alright something has to be off here. Hearthstone works fine pc runs fine but CS:GO (haven?t tried another 3D app yet) 5mins in BSOD again.

I tried to check everything that i thought was causing the problem, i did the memcheck and the Disccheck through build in Windows command (all good). I tried Furmark and it lasted around 7mins then BSOD again. I did clean the insides of my PC just then and started Furmark again. Lasted around 20min and maybe further but had to stop because of work. I thought the problem was the dust but i just started CS:GO and 2min into the match BSOD 124.

I experienced this kind of crash before with witcher 3 but that depended on the Game version and was solved by OCing my CPU and GPU. I did not try this for CS:GO yet.

I hope you can help me track down the cause of these BSODs, if you need further info just say so.
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Happened again with RO2. Added latest dmp.

I installed a program on a different computer and it ran just fine, but when I installed it on this computer (ASUS P4C800E Deluxe) it seemed to install and said it was successful, but when I went to use the program this is the message I got: "Could not run your drive information, please run the Drive Selector application." I don't understand what that means or where to go...the program is for copying DVD/videos. I tried installing it twice with the same results. The drives are recognized and run just fine for all other programs. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Answer:Running Drive Selector Application??

My guess is that this has to do with the Zone selector.
When you buy a DVD drive, it's generally set to a specific Zone.
I think that the program that you've installed is trying to work on a different
zone from the one you DVD drive is set to.
Is your DVD drive on your other computer is multi-zone?

I have been a long time user of a fantasic software tool for Google Earth called GE Path by a clever fellow R.Sgrillo. It's an older piece, not enhanced beyond it's current version from 2012. I have tried to consult the creator for support, but I'm not even certain he provides much towards it anymore. After a recent hard drive reformat, and reinstallation of Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit and GEPath, I have found that I am unable to use GE Path due to an error I had never experienced before.

When I execute the application, I am met with this error: "Component 'FM20.dll ' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is mising or invalid."

I can confirm installation of Microsoft Office has left FM20.dll in my Windows/System32 directory. What might be causing this issue, and how do I resolve it?

The author's website states that the software requires vb6 runtimes, which I can't say for certain I have or not.  I clicked on the link he provied to download, which takes me to a Microsoft page no longer available.

I found and downloaded vbrun60sp6 from Microsoft (VB6.0-KB290887-X86) and attempted to install it. A small box flashed up in the top left corner briefly, and did nothing. Just kinda ended. I have my doubts anything was installed. I downloaded and attempted installation of VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU. It wouldn't install because I needed MS VB6 SP6 installed. Which obviously I don't.

I Googled for "Visual Basic 6.0... Read more
