First gaming PC

Question: First gaming PC

Im new to the whole pc gaming thing, would have started 3 years ago but my computer couldnt even run Minecraft at 30 fps, so for my 14th birthday I was bought (family wont let me build but my store -currys- will install new parts for free if I have the parts which is good ). The pc is a HP Envy 750-007 ( Now I dont have it yet and am waiting for delivery but that link shows you some info. Is it a good computer for gaming? Will it keep up with high end games on high settings? And will it keep up for years to come? I plan to get new parts every birthday/ christmas excluding this years as the computer came to £1k. Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Guys,
This is my very first post on Windows Vista Forums and I am eager to get into this thread!

First off....Windows Vista the very best you can buy for gaming.
This features the 64bit OS version which can process 14GB of RAM at top speeds you can find in a new OS. I would definitely recommend this OS for gaming and none other.

Now on to the main part of my thread: Compatibility Gaming! This is the most discussed issue for gamers across the US. The problem is how do you get games to work (specifically older games) on Windows Vista Ultimate? Well, there are 3 solutions. 1: You could wait until the company of the game makes a OS patch for the game although that could take a while. 2: You could go into the game files and put the game into compatibility mode for your OS. And 3: You could revert back to an older OS that works for your game. Which one would you choose? I would choose #2.

They are always going to make games work on a newer OS. Lets take the game Lord of The Rings Battle for Middle Earth 1&2. Electronic Arts (EA) has already made a patch for those two that will have 85% more chance of running on Vista! If doesn't work then it's the type of computer hardware you are using. The hardware would 100% guarantee be outdated! In that case just get more recent hardware!? It's not that difficult! With a bit of research, common sense, and problem solving skills you can get gaming compatibility issues out of your hair!

I hope this thread has helpe... Read more

My gaming PC has on a number of occasions shut down during gaming (assassin's creed III, batman arkham origins, mass effect 3, emulating ps2 games, etc.) so i decided to monitor it one time with CPUID while running batman arkham origins windowed with high settings.

While playing, my processor temp was usually in the range of 54 Celsius, but got as high as 58 on some occasions, and my vid card was in the range of mid 70s Celsius and got as high as 81 on one occasion. I checked the forums and googled and from what I've read, it seemed like these temps are supposedly in the normal range. But after a few hours in that constant temperature, my PC hung and then I had to shut it down manually. On the other occasions that I was playing other games, it didn't even hang but instead shut down on it's own.

What always happens after this is that when i boot my pc, the monitor says there's no signal and the CPU stops and restarts on it's own (either once or a couple of times). i have to move the cpu to another room which is a bit cooler and have to give it a couple of hours (sometimes half a day) before it boots normally again. There were times I've tried just leaving it in the original room before for a few days but it never boots normally when i do that.

I thought that the problem might be with my GPU but recently, I was browsing with google chrome and when i opened a lot of tabs in succession (about 10), the PC hung again and I had to manually resta... Read more

hello people...
im building a gaming PC and it is my first built.
Till now i had been playing on low end laptop(back in times of NFS underground n all) then i got XPS 15 L502x and xbox 360-S but they all have their limitations and the laptops cost a lot and dont withstand the threshold of the games of current time.It all becomes very confined and limited.
So i have decided to go for an ALL GAMING ONLY! PC built, and im going to do it myself (really excited about the complete project)
Now ill be playing games in 3D (ie on a 3D monitor) but im not a very big fan of the 4k or UHD resolutions and will be playing at 1920x1080p but at 120/144 HZ instead of 60hz monitor
so keeping all that in mind and with my research over the internet for couple of months i have decided what im buying and i need you guys to help me out finding any problem with this configuration

Hi all! About 5 months ago I bought all new parts and assembled a PC for gaming / school work. The goal was to buy parts that are instantly available (sold older PC to a friend and I needed a replacement fast) and the price range was about 1000-1200€ (in Finland). I ended up with the following parts:

- Fractal design Define R4 Black Pearl
- Asus DRW-24F1ST/BLK/G/AS 24x DVD+/-RW
- Kingston HyperX Genesis 8 GB (2 x 4 GB)
- WD Green 1 TB SATA III 64 MB
- MSI GeForce GTX 760 Gaming OC Edition 2048 MB
- Kingston SSDNow v300 120 GB SSD 2,5"
- Corsair CX600W V2
- Intel Core i5 4690K 3,5 GHz LGA1150
- Asus Z97-K Intel Z97 LGA 1150 ATX
(Decided to save some money and buy heatsink/cpu fan later, since I also needed a new monitor)

- Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I haven't overclocked anything.

All seemed fine until I installed the first games and Bluescreens started coming up.
There are 3 different BSOD Im getting (more detailed info below). Always Machine Check Exeption 0x9C. The thing is BSOD only comes during gaming. First the sound loops and everything freezes followed by BSOD.

Searching for the problem I have:

- Formatted and re-installed everything 3 times
- Monitored temperatures with Bios, Realtemp, Open hardware monitor (60c-80c with heavy gaming)
- Run sfc / scannow, chkdsk, Seatools, Lifeguard Diagnostic, Memtest, Prime95, Heaven Benchmark, dxdiag; no errors in any of them

Hi guys,

This is my first post in this forum since I have not received any help from elswhere.
You guys are my only hope.

Okay, so I recently bought two G1 Gaming GTX970 graphics cards.
The first driver install went bad by windows using its own drivers, so I got the Display Driver Uninstaller from 3dguru, scrubbed the drivers in safe mode. After restart windows still used its own drivers at first but everything worked and I updated with the latest nVidia drivers.

Now to the issue...
After gaming for some time graphically demanding games (AC:Unity, FarCry4) the PC would freeze and I would have a BSOD on my hands. Interestingly enough this has happened with nVidia supported games, but I've managed to play Alien: Isolation for an extended period of time which is AMD supported. Have not had any problems with Borderlands Pre Sequel (nVidia supported) either but it's also not as heavy on the GPU. When the BSOD has happened it has happened approx within an hour of gaming, sometimes within minutes. The BSOD does not happen when I'm watching movies or browsing the net or working on the PC, just when gaming heavy does it occur, I run the system SLI enabled. I'm going to include two crash dumps below.

By the looks of it, it seems to be a driver issue, so what are my options here?
I've reinstalled the drives but still the problem has persisted.
Any help or insight into the BSOD errors I'm getting would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Answer:BSOD with Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970 in SLI while gaming

I've been having a very similar issue, I've only got the one Gigabyte 970 G1, and I've only really tested 2 games (AC Unity and Civ Beyond Earth) and while playing both after usually a few hours they'll freeze then I'll get a bsod. They're always Bug Check Code: 0x00000124 and all have the Crash Address: ntoskrnl.exe+4ae61c.

I've run windows memory diagnostic with no results, I've reseated my card, performed multiple clean driver installs, checked temperatures with no problems. I can't figure out what's causing it and this is the only similar problem I can find online. I really wish I could help but it seems we're in much the same boat

ok, so let me just throw my budget out here, est: $600

I'm not sure, i could be more or less thats just a rough idea.

MY NEED: I want it to be able to play games like HITMAN ABSOLUTION at 50% - 60% atleast. And i want it to be able to play grand theft auto v,

I need help in the costs of the parts im choosing, if it can be better then please suggest parts.

Any way, I need help in every aspect.

I know what RAM is,
Im going for 6 to 8 gb, will ddr3 do the job? how much will it cost?
I believe that a i5 should be okay, a 3.0ghz one?
its around $200 right?
Should i pick another one?
okay so currently I have in my laptop a Nvidia 410m.
Its an integrated card. I obviously want a dedicated one.
Im not sure which to pick, please recommend a card, hopefully from Nvidia.
What does 128bit, 256bit mean in GPUs?
And what memory should the card have? 2gb?

EDIT: i found this card,
its price is around $150, can i go for this?
at the time of purchase Im thinking about 2 250gb hdds because if i need more I'll simply attach more.
so thats not a problem.
I know s*it about these things. My plan is to tell my desired parts to the guy at the shop, from where im buying and getting it built (i'll just tell which parts I want). Then he'll just choose a good enough mother board for me? is this ok?
Did i miss anything? please help me

Answer:Building a Gaming Computer Gaming Low budget. Help.

The only thing that's missing is the power supply (the "PSU"), but we should wait until you select a CPU and video card - especially the video card. The PSU is an investment, so we have to make sure it's a good one.

Go for a 2 x 4 GB kit or 2 x 8 GB kit. Your only choice right now is DDR3. The cost can vary from roughly $50 USD give or take $10-$20 to almost $200 USD and more.

Which i5? 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation, or 4th Generation Core i5? The cost should be at around $200 give or take $10 to $20 USD.

Video card:

Try to avoid being loyal to one side or the other (NVIDIA or AMD) because some AMD GPUs are way better, but some NVIDIA GPUs are better.

The 128bit or 256bit is the bandwidth of the memory. The higher the number, the faster the memory can be in some ways.

The amount of memory you'd want is about 2GB, yeah. The more the merrier, but it mostly benefits textures.

You can go for any video card you want, but the GT 640 might not be an appreciable upgrade from the 410m. You'll notice it, but I dunno...

Yeah, this is a little bit of a personal thing because take me for example: I have two 60 GB solid state drives and it's all I need. One is for Windows and programs, and the other is for things like My Documents and even my desktop.

Like the power supply, the hard drive is a bit of an investment, so try to get good ones.

Not really. I would also like to see you build it instead of making someone do it for you.... Read more

Greetings All,

I posted this over at both the MSI and TomsHardware forums as I think it's a hardware issue but I want to make sure it's not a Windows 7 issue so I'm going to post it here in case anyone has some thoughts or ran into a similar issue in the past.

I've run into an issue on a new build that I can't nail down and need your advice on my next steps so I'll try to give you all the information I have and what I tried. This is a NEW build that was built about 3 weeks ago. Everything ran fine until today when it all went wrong after a game lockup.

Everything worked fine today when I booted up so I decided to play Witcher 3 which I've been playing with no issues (with the exception of a freeze for a second or two in big cities when the CPU hit's 100%) but those are few. Anyway at the main menu screen (not playing yet) today it locked up for the first time. Had to use reset button as CNT-ALT-DLT didn't work and on reboot the problem appeared.

No matter what I do I can't get GTX 960 out of 800X600 resolution safe mode or resolve it's conflict.

Description of how it Boots Events:

1. Starting the PC (powering on) this is what happens between devices.
2. The GPU lights up and monitor is Blue (active)
3. Four seconds later GPU lights OFF, VGA on motherboard turns RED and Monitor goes AMBER (no signal)
4. Six seconds later GPU lights ON, RED VGA light goes OFF and Monitor goes Blue (active)

At this point it loads the bios screen at 80... Read more

Answer:MSI Z170a Gaming 3 or GTX 960 GAMING 100ME Issue?

7-31-2016 Update

Well no one replied yet to my post but I did some more testing and the result is as follows.

I did some more troubleshooting and cleared the CMOS, swapped monitors, tried another HDMI cable and reinstalled the 960 into the new build for testing but it still did not solve the issue. Still locked at 800X600 with error code 43 (Windows disable the device because of problems) in device manager and I'm concerned about how the card itself boots and lights the RED VGA led on the MSI board. I retested it in that PC that has the 600watt PSU and an Asrock board and while it did work at a higher resolution the card behaves suspiciously during powerup as.

1. Power on All Fans and MSI logo light up.... Monitor is Blue (active)
2. 5 seconds later MSI logo goes off... fans still spinning.....Monitor is Amber (No Signal)
3. 15 seconds later MSI logo comes on......Monitor goes Blue (active)
4. Once Windows loads fans stop spinning. (Normal)

**Note** This is similar to the way it boots in the problem system (no RED led on Asrock board)

So 20 seconds total to initiate a stable signal to me is problematic and this is on the test PC not the one I built BUT I still can't rule out a problem with this MSI motherboard as that RED VGA led still comes on for a few seconds when the GTS 450 is in there (even though it works fine) and I can't find an answer to if that's normal. Sent a "support" request to MSI and their reply was "Try the card in another sy... Read more

I have been looking for verification that if I buy the Dell 24 Gaming Monitor – S2417DG and attach it to my Inspiron 15 Gaming 7567 HDMI that I will get full 2560x1440 resolution refresh rate 165 Hz with 1ms response as the Monitor specs are listed.
I can find no information that the HDMI will pass this level of output.
I have talked to Dell tech support and they do say that the HDMI port is connected directly to the  NVIDIA  GeForce GTX 1050T i with 4GB GDDR5 but I also have seen information that HDMI will not support this.
So I am looking for verification on this configuration being compatible/able to output the full capabilities of the video card to the monitor via the on board HDMI output?

Answer:Inspiron 15 Gaming 7567 HDMI Specs/Does HDMI out support full bandwidth for G-SYNC Dell Gaming Monitor – S2417DG

First of all, G-Sync as far as I know requires DisplayPort and will not run on HDMI.  Even if it does, I don't think even HDMI 2.0 has enough bandwidth for 1440p @ 165 Hz.  And even if it does though, all of the Dell systems I've seen have only had HDMI 1.4, which is only enough for 1440p @ 60 Hz.  But even if all of that isn't a problem, does the Inspiron 7567 have ONLY a GeForce GPU, or does it have an Intel GPU plus a GeForce GPU?  If it's the latter, G-Sync will definitely not work because in almost all systems that have both GPUs, only the Intel GPU is directly wired to the display outputs.  If your system has ONLY the GeForce GPU, then G-Sync should work in theory, but again you may have the bandwidth problems I mentioned above.

So over the past couple of weeks i've been getting alot of BSoD while gaming on my laptop, the most common being failure to reset display drivers.
It seems to be a driver problem but I've tried re-installing them and it hasn't had an effect.
I wasn't sure how to properly do a fresh install so if someone could recommend a way of doing a fresh install.
Also more recently my GPU hasn't been appearing on my device manager randomly, but after a reset it comes back.
I've attached the dump files following the guides, not sure if I have done it properly though.
Help would be appreciated soon as I don't want this ?1000 laptop to die

Answer:Various BSoD while gaming and some randomly while not gaming.

Yeah, you are having problems with the Nvidia driver.

Your msinfo.32 shows that as disabled though, that could just be at the time the report was created.

Where did you get that driver, it appears to be a beta driver from Nvidia.

Have you tried just using the driver from the manufacturer? They usually modify drivers for their hardware.

I can see it is an older driver but that may be your best option,

MSI Global GT70 0NC 64

How is your laptop cooling? Have you made sure the cooling vents are clean?

All that being said, here is a useful guide for Nvidia drivers,

Try cleaning your laptop vents and doing a clean install of the driver from MSI to see if it makes a difference.

Hi guys, I have always been using PC speakers while gaming, however, lately I have been thinking of getting headset as my friends who use it says that it will definitely enhance your gaming experience. Is that true? Was looking at the Gizmodo's E3 coverage when i saw this new Fatal1ty gaming headset MKII ($99). I really like Fatal1ty as I think he's a great gamer but I haven't gotten any Fatal1ty gear yet. Anyone who has other Fatal1ty stuff care to share their experience?

Answer:How important is gaming headset to PC gaming?

hmm. pros and cons of using a head set

can game 24/7 and not wake my wife, neighbors, kids, etc.
the good one's have surround sound and it actually works. even stereo ones are great for games, cause you can actually tell which direction things are happening.
come in usb or 1.5mm connector (i think that's the size? )
they have a mic for voice chat
they wont shake the room like a good subwoofer will
the cheaper ones are really cheap (im using some $20 ones now, but i don't care)
the usb ones can be a pain if you like to use your speakers once in a while, you either have to unplug them or go into the playback devices in the control panel and switch between your 2 sound cards, usb or other to get the speakers to work
cant' think of any more at the moment.

Hello and welcome to TSF and thanks for the compliment.

I think this is your RAM. I need you to do a test...

Please download It's saved as an iso so you need to burn it to a cd and boot with it(yes it's legal). Make sure you run it for each stick, as in taking every stick but one then switching. I would recommend running them overnight(each).
You may want to dust your ram carefully!
Make sure you get no finger prints on the RAM as it may damage it.

So I`m new to the forum and I was hoping my issue can be resolved or at least get some insight on what is causing my PC to crash.
The rig is brand new and I just installed windows and updated everything, so it`s getting really depressing gettting your new PC to crash this much.
During gaming or watching videos or downloading heavy programas (i.e. Games) my computer will just freeze out and I can`t task manager out of it, the only way out is to turn it off my holding the power button. Sometime when watching a video it`ll crash and a sound just loops from the speakers in the screen.
I`ve tried:
/Changing RAM sticks and only using one
/ Re/installing windows and all the drivers
/ WhoCrashed doesn`t give me any crash reports (not even when I had it open and the PC crashed)

Hello, my name is mark, and i am planning to build my first gaming PC, and i am having a-few issues with finding the right parts to do the job. So far, these are the parts i am planning to purchase for my build:
CPU: click here Board: click here Card: click here click here click here click here Drive/dvd burner: click here the main thing i am stuck on, the Power Supply: click here i want to quickly note before i continue, i am going to be using a duel monitor display, each at around 22-24 inch (which, lets juts say isn't negotiable in my situation), each running at 1080p (HD), maybe every now and then ill have a game running at 1440p (and no i am not going to be gaming with the game covering both monitors, the duel monitors are mainly for multitasking my school work, and when i am gaming the ability to have Skype, my youtube streaming page which i will i will discuss further through this paragraph, and other stuff like that on the other screen so that i don't have to switch through tabs constantly). Another thing i want to state is that eventually i am going to start youtubing and want to be able to record then post and fairly often, stream 1080p game play footage, so if it makes any difference, keep that in mind.
And last of all, i am very new to this new world i have stumbled upon (i am stepping up from laptop to PC gaming X_X) so i assume that i have made a few stupid mistakes, which is why i am here, so please no non-constructive criticism. Though back to the topic. What... Read more

Hi and thxs for entering to this topic. plz help me looking for the best or very good gaming parts for my pc try to make my pc operative for 100% games at max setts.
My pc now is way outdated, i only have $1600.

PC specs now:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Dual Cpu 1.60ghz perfomance rate at 2.4ghz
Mainbord: Intel D945gcnl
Memory:1016mb (1gb)
Video Card: Intel 82945g (128mb) is almost not having a video card
Hard Drive: 160gb

Answer:Help me upgrading my not for gaming pc to a gaming pc!

if what you are saying is that you want to upgrade your old machine....i would not attempt to do do that. with $1600 you can build a gaming behemoth that will play anything on max settings. this is about $1100 which leaves you plenty for a 24" monitor and CD/DVD drive if you need them. you could also add a SSD if you want to improve load times as well. The GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD4P also has 2 PCIE slots for a future Crossfire/SLI upgrade. Also, if your not in a huge hurry, you might want to wait until March to see how the GF100's perform.

hey i was wondering if you could help me with a small problem ive been having. i use a 8600gt on vista ultimate and have been using it for 1 year, but ive experienced a much slower gaming experience on games like cod 5 and gta 4 with vista ultimate and windows aero, yet when i reverted to using xp my problems were solved, but since windows vista basic doesnt use aero, would the gaming experience be any different on vista basic than it is on windows xp? thanks a bunch , raiyan =)

Answer:Vista gaming vs Xp gaming

Well i read that only the vista can use the all power of the new directx, so it should be better for games, anyway Windows Vista is heavier than the XP, even if you disable the Aero. How many RAM do u have?

BSOD persists after fresh install of Windows 10 from windows 8.1, happens when playing heroes of the storm quite often but has happened while browsing pinterest/facebook.

Answer:BSOD when gaming and not gaming

Hi deadlykitten,

Please fill in your system specsPlease go to this site and download the tool. The tool will give you detailed information about your system specs, please fill in your system specs more completely. How to fill in your system specs:
Attachment 34016
Attachment 34017

There are only windows drivers involved, there is a really small chance they are actually the cause.

Diagnostic Test

Please make a backup of your important files and get your rescue media or create one.
Please create a restore point.
Please read and run driver verifier.

A lot windows drivers are blamed in the crashes, but that usually means that a 3rd party driver is actually the cause.
Driver verifier stresses your drivers and will crash your pc if any driver fails due to a violation.

Driver verifier should be performed for a max of 48 hours, or when you have a bluescreen, whatever comes first.

If driver verifier has found a violation and you can't get back into windows normally, try to boot into safe mode and reset in safe mode driver verifier, or in the troubleshooting options open command prompt and type verifier /reset.

Your system will act very sluggishly while driver verifier is enabled, this is normal as your drivers will be being subjected to heavy testing in order to make them crash.

Hi there I am having such a hard time with this laptop concerning gaming which is one of the main purposes I bought it for, especially considering the fact it was specifically advertised as a gaming laptop.  The 4K resolution has some serious scaling problems, reducing multiple programs to tiny boxes and things like that. Also apparently the rest of the hardware like the Nvidia Geforce GTX 860M graphics card and the CPU cant even keep up with this resolution which is why while running games at 4K, everything is incredibly slow and the FPS drops significantly. Its just silly. At most all my games I have to run at 1080p for the hardware to kick in and even then sometimes I can't even play on high settings. Like for instance I recently bought Assassins Creed Black Flag, which supports 4K reoslution and of course when I started playing, everything was so slow and laggy even on the lowest possible graphics settings. Once I changed the resolution to 1080p it shrank it down to a tiny size and was STILL super laggy and had a low FPS on high settings. Although changing the graphics settings down to the minumum helped with FPS issues to a 'playable' level, the screen was miniscule and unplayable. I am getting soooo many issues with this 4K resolution thing and im very surprised Lenovo did not mention this and further more label this Laptop as a "Gaming Laptop", as it is seriously turning out not to be and after looking at many reviews into this, a lot... Read more

Answer:Is the Lenovo Y50 Gaming Laptop even a "Gaming Laptop"???

Simply put not really. No mid range laptop is going to be able to run games at 4k which honestly should be pretty obvious. Most of the problems you're having have been covered in various reviews :/

I know about nothing when it comes to ordering computer parts, but I managed to scrap this together from other threads, does it look decent/compatible? (like 3 parts are not available right now, so >_>')
My goal is to get a gaming rig that I can get smooth fps with gta iv/source games, and maybe even screen record (though that is not a big issue). I also am not really a sound quality fiend, so I do not need a soundcard right now as I will probably be ordering one later when I have more money (I don't even have enough money for this, but close.) Ill also steal the cd drive from this computer and an extra I have.

Question: cpu and gaming

This is my current set up:
os: windows xp pro
cpu: amd 3200 venice
video card: xfx 7900 gt
sound card: soundblaster 2zs
ram: 2 gig of Corsair
mobo: dfi lanparty nf4 ultra-d
I'm thinking about upgrading my processor to an AMD 4200 dual core. My question is would this make a noticable difference when it comes to online gaming. Say for a game like counterstrike source or even newer fps titles?

Answer:cpu and gaming

I'm not sure you would see a benefit for Counterstrike, as your current specs should run that without much trouble. As for newer FPS', you might see a little performance boost, but I couldn't say how much as you have the RAM and video card to run most pretty well. Also, you should note that having a dual core processor vs a single core will not give you ANY benefits, as not too many games are coded to take advantage of the second core. For gaming purposes, you might save yourself some money (and possibly get more performance) by getting a faster single core processor.

Hi there,

I was recently looking at building a new gaming machine. Roughly for around £850-£900 ($1,500).

This machine will be for the latest games, such as DayZ, Battlefield 4+, Call of Duty, but also for recording/steaming game-play.

At the moment I am just looking at CPUs/Motherboards.

There are so many CPUs available, and there are so many websites which contradict each other. I am looking to spend around £100-£200 on the CPU, depending on price/performance ratio.

I have been told many pros and cons about certain CPU chips, but I would just like to have people input.

Some of my friends recommended:

AMD FX-8350 4GHz Socket AM3+ 8MB Cache

Intel Core i7 4820K 3.70GHz Socket 2011 10MB Cache

Intel Core i7 4771 3.50GHz Socket 1150 8MB Cache

I have been told to look into the 2011 socket CPU/Motherboard as they are the newer type?

Can anyone recommend a good CPU/motherboard for gaming?

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated as always.

Many Thanks, Chris.

Answer:New gaming PC

You can definitely do without the sound card imo. Its really a terrible time to buy Hard Drives now as well, they've essentially tripled in price since the floods. I'd say if you have a spare Hard Drive to use that for now until prices come down some. I'd personally hold off on the HD and just upgrade my SSD choice is pretty cheap rite now. Besides that great choices on components, have fun

Hey guys just wanted to know if anyone knew about these first off;
I'm looking at getting one as a gaming rig, obviously I don't know much about these kind of set-ups, but here are the questions.

would this suffice as a gaming rig? and to what kind of latest game would this run
is this tower worth the price
I know these are some ex-server cases and kit inside, but would this be able to run windows 7 and compete with some of the other gaming machines out there, as I would like to try and get some film editing with Sony Vegas and possibly be using fraps.
and the last question, are all GHZ sizes relevant to each other? as ram is as well? obviously this is supporting standard ddr ram.

Anyway guys, thank you in advance just stuck trying to look for a decent machine to run.
Thanks again.

Answer:Help about a gaming rig

It's not a gaming rig. Poor CPU and they are bad as advertising as 5.6Ghz. The graphics card has ancient AGP technology. In my humble opinion its £120 worth of junk.

Hi everyone,

I recently got a new computer (a friend put it together for me) and so far, it works perfectly. I don't intend to upgrade any time soon, but out of interest I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the RAM I have is optimal for gaming or not. It's two sticks of 'GEIL 512MB DDR 400 RAM'.

Everything seems to run fine, but in the future I hope to upgrade to either 2 or 4GB. It would make sense to use my 4 slots to best effect by starting with the best RAM I can. perhaps someone would be so kind as to recommend some 512MB and 1024MB options suited to gaming, taking into consideration that I know nothing about RAM (I tried to learn more, but it just went over my head). Money is not really an issue as of yet seeing as this is purely hypothetical.

The rest of my system is this:

Motherboard: Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3700+
GPU: Xfx Geforce 7900GT SLi 256MB DDR3 PCI-E

Thanks for your time!

Geil is excellent memory. You could benefit from larger modules that come in matched sets, but otherwise, it should make little difference.

Answer:New to PC Gaming

Well Maxal welcome to the forums. As far as I know only controllers made for pc work on computers. Unless this XBOX 360 controller was the PC compatable one. Also some controllers are made only for certain games. I'm not familier with the game you are playing but I'm sure someone else would be able to help you more.

Question: Gaming on W7

So I've got Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 - 32bit
My Pc specs are: AMD Athlon x2 4450e
3GB of DDR2 Ram 663 Mhz (or something close)
250 GB Sata 7200 RPM HDD
EVGA GeForce GT 220
1GB DDR3 PhysX OpenCL and 3D
over clocked to [1001Mhz Core Clock] [2180Mhz Shader Clock]
[1970Mhz Memory Clock]
When I play NFS Carbon With these settings it lags on Maximum only ges 25-35 FPS 28 AVG
On the other hand playing on XP with these same specs one thing different is the EVGA Nvidia GeForrce 7200 GS 512mb DDR2 512mhz Core and 734 Memory clock "not those settings for the 7200 are already OC" With a self built fan on it
it Gets 30-40 FPS 32 AVG which is very strange.

My Power supply is 400 Watts I got nothing else besides 1 graphic card at a time and a dvd drive.

Answer:Gaming on W7

Ok first, you are talking of two different systems. I can tell as you do not have both of those video cards in the same system.

On your W7 system, what is set to startup automatically?
What is the motherboard that you are using?
What is the make and model of your power supply?

Im looking to get a gaming pc but i dont know much about hardware since im a simple console guy. I have a friend who is a pc gamer and builds computers for fun sometimes. I have talked to him when we went to school together about a month ago and i was telling him how i wanted to get into pc gaming since im starting to get bored of the sh*t xbox keeps giving me. Any way im here to ask what should i go for. Custom built or Pre made ?
Any answers are appreciated.
Also i have a Budget of around £400-50 since im a 16 year old guy waiting to be accepted into college with no job prospects in a middle class family.
Games i want to be able to play =
Z8 games, crossfire.
Counter Strike Source.
Btw i have a loptop at the moment witch i have had for 2 years and now overheats after a few hours or if i start up a game. this is because of gaming for extensive hours.
Also i would want to use,
Steam, skype, xfire, Opera,Gimp, Sony vegas and I tunes.

Answer:Need help with 1st gaming pc

Do you need "peripherals" eg monitor, webcam, keyboard and mouse, speakers, operating system, to be included within budget? Do you feel able to build, yourself, perhaps with your friend's help, or do you want fully pre-built?

Question: New to PC gaming

Okay, I've been wanting to upgrade my PC for gaming, but my knowledge in this particular department is very lacking. I was told on another forum that it wouldn't do a whole lot of good upgrading my PC (a Dimension Dell 2400) because there's only one PCI slot for video, which is a problem apparently, and also, that my OS is tied to my motherboard.

But, I'm mostly interested in games like Neverwinter Nights, EverQuest, etc. (Games that I believe I've heard don't have very high requirements.) So, what I'm wondering is, is it only really high-end games I won't be able play?

And if I am able to play the games mentioned on my PC, what exactly will I need to upgrade? And more importantly, how much will it cost? Keep in mind that I'm quite poor.

Question: Gaming pc help.

My pc has been running games poorly after my clean windows 7 install.
I can run windows 7 perfectly but when I try to run games, it lags big time.

For example, when I run rust, I get 1 fps.
Even when I run a "small" game like Fistful of Frags, I get 30fps.
It's as if my pc is only running games on my cpu and not gpu.

I've downloaded all updates for windows 7 and have downloaded new drivers for my gpu as well.

I've tried to get help from other forums (Steam), but the "professionals" there told me to download a bunch of benchmarking programs for my fps.

This has happened before when I had a 750ti but it was fixed by tweaking the Nvidia Control Panel settings, I have tried today but it didn't work.

I've tried everything I have at the top of my head but they obviously didn't work.

Fyi: I built my pc a year ago and upgraded my video card.

Asus Gefore GTX 950 OC 2gb
8gb ram
B75ma-e33 MOBO
500w PSU
Seagate 1tb
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
On Asus Tweak 2, the clock speed and vram are only on 1 bar, but I think it's the stock numbers.

Out of fustration, ive tried putting my clock speed etc on max but nothing really happened......

Help me please, hopefully I don't have to get a new MoBo or cpu because I have no money.

Okay, this is the second time with a different game this is happening, at very specific points in the game, My Laptop's screen blacks out and goes off, the computer stays on with lights and stuff but the screen just stays off like when you put off a pc but the fans keep running, I then have to forcefully power my pc off to put off the entire system.

I don't think this has anything to do with my Laptop's temperature as I've just had the vents and heat sinks ventilated recently, also cause the laptop goes off at just one scene in a particular mission in both games, Assassins Creed and Far Cry 3.

I don't think its my PC's specs either cause I went through the requirements of these games before getting them. Please help me, I've not been able to go past the stages in the game where my PC goes off.

My Laptop's specs:

I'm a typical gamer, CoD4, CSS, going to be warhammer online, diablo 3(whenever that might come out) and stuff like that. I also am going to school, so I guess the best well rounded OS would be nice. My friend tells me to get ultimate, but does that come with a lot of worthless programs?

Just get Home Premium. Ultimate isn't worth the extra money, for the few extra features (Texas Hold 'Em, file encryption, one other thing, and Dreamscene [which there are ways to get that on Home Premium...but we can't go into that here ]).

OS: Windows 7 home premium service pack 1
Power supply: Silver Power SP-SS500 500W

Any idea how I can keep the temperature down?

I wouldn't say those temps are horrible and will kill your system. However, staying cool will usually prolong the life of your parts and prevent all sorts of weird issues.
Take a look here:
You may find some ways to lower temps. There's also a part 2 of that guide and you can find it in the "guides" section of the forum.

I am going to be building a new system for my boyfriend, from scratch, with only monitor/keyboard/mouse/speakers on hand. I am planning on using New Egg for purchasing (though I could be persuaded elsewhere if they were reputable and affordable) The primary use of his computer, and mine for that matter, is MMORPGs (currently Everquest), and internet browsing. He really doesn't do anything else on the PC worth mentioning, and sound is not an issue at all (as long as there is sound in some onboard audio is fine) For those not familiar with Everquest, it can be taxing on both ram and video card. It's unoptimized code written circa the late 90's and has since been patched and repatched so that it uses twice the resources you'd expect for the quality of the graphics. I love the game, but that's the reality of the code.

Anyway, below is my thought process so far on parts. If anyone could give suggestions, I'd be most grateful. Basically I'm looking for the best bang for my money, of course, and the top of my budget is around $800, though I'd obviously like to spend as little as I can get away with and still have quality.

In addition, I have zero familiarity with AMD processors or ATI graphics cards. Please feel free to suggest them, but try to compare them to what I know if at all possible (Intel and Geforce) ie "The ATI UberCard 256 is comparable to a Geforce 6600 256" I am not anti-AMD or anti-ATI, I just don't k... Question: Gaming PC <$1,000

Could you folks post your favorite nominations that might fit the criteria here? My best buddy and roommate has debated about buying a PC for a long time (he makes plenty of money, but hates to "waste" money on himself).

I want you guys to suggest some models because he is considering Alienware's budget option, and it doesn't look all that great to me. He also doesn't want to build it himself (I did mine and got a lot of bang for the buck, but he wants an out-of-box package). Anyone have any likely prospects, or at least that beat out AlienWare's Aurora?

I've heard good things about ABS PCs, but have never owned one. Here is a link to a few gaming computers around the $1000 mark. Although none of them come with keyboard, mouse, or monitor.

P.S. These computers are a better value than a comparably priced Alienware.

Hi, I have a problem and I need help. I can no longer play games on my computer. I think its because I updated my computer to windows 10. my motherboard is M68MT-S2 from gigabyte. with an AMD FX 4100 quad core processor. and a GeForce 7025/nForce 630a graphics card from NVidia. My hardware only works on windows 7,8, and vista I believe. can you confirm if I'm right? and what should I do to fix it?

Answer:Need help with my gaming PC.

There are no windows 8 or 10 drivers for that Motherboard and so Windows 10 may have used some generic drivers to get it to work , and they may not support the games you want to play
if you upgraded within the last 30days - then you can revert back to windows 7

heres how

if its been over 30days - then you will need you recovery DVDs or USB stick, that you should have created when you first got the PC

My question is 2 fold...

First, a neighbor friend of mine needs to upgrade his 4 or 5 yr old Dell PC, he does a lot of photo & video editing as well as music editing , we got to talking and I told him we might be able to help each other.

What do you think that I could sell the following components to him for? I am not looking to dupe him but I also don't want to end up losing money myself.

Ultra Aluminus Case with 2 120mm fans and 1 80mm fan
Thermaltake ToughPower 600w PSU
EVGA 680i SLI motherboard
Intel CPU E7200 w/ Artic Pro 7 Cooler
4GB OCZ SLI 1066mhz (PC-8500) RAM
ECS 8800 GT 512MB w/Accelero S1+S2 passive HS
640GB HDD 7200.10 16mb cache
USB 5 into 1 card reader/floppy combo

In other words, I would be giving him my rig, sans the EVGA GTX260 Video Card. How much would you guy pay for it?

Now onto more pressing matters. If I do sell him my rig, I would be looking for:

CPU Cooler
5 into 1 reader or better

I already got the case & PSU, also, I will be using a 150GB Velociraptor + a Samsung 750GB for storage.

Last board I bought was the EVGA 680i and since then, I have not read or look to the new ones. I have heard that there are some boards capable of DDR2 & DDR3 ram? I honestly don't want TOP of the LINE, a couple of notches down would be just fine.
I also don't want to over spend, I would gladly use the money from the sale of my other rig to purchase the components I will be missing for this one.

Answer:My new Gaming Rig...

Hello AstaLaVista,

You need to consider a few things in determining the sale price of your used computer -Hardware, software, age of components, price paid, person buying the computer - are they a gamer or casual user. A gamer may understand why you bought a $500 video card and be willing to negotiate, a casual user may not.

I've always found it difficult selling used systems because the price is usually almost always less than half of what I paid. And with computer prices constantly falling the question has to be asked - can I get a new comparable computer for the asking price of your used one? Take these into consideration and you should be able figure out a fair price. A little bit of homework goes a long way - even in selling.

As to building a new system, I would first come up with a budget on how much I'm willing to spend on a new rig. Then I would do some on-line price comparisons on the items I wish to get, put the rig together on paper, and go from there.

I'm not sure about a DDR2/3 combo MB?s but I'd choose on or the other. There are plenty of good DDR2 MB's around and prices are cheap...but the boards are getting old. Since you say you want your new system to last 2-3 years I?d seriously consider a DDR3 setup, especially when you consider that prices on DDR3 has dropped a lot.

Just my two cents.

nvidia geforce 7025/nvidia nforce 630a or geforce 7200 gs

I think you'll find that everyone will have a different opinion on which is best. I built a new PC recently and installed Vista Home Premium x64. My old PC has XP Pro. Seems that both work equally well for gaming to me at least. I have had no OS related problems running games with Visat x64. I would have no reason to downgrade my OS back to XP Pro.

I am looking to build a new PC. This would be my first time. I have a million questions, I don't know much about this. I've looked into buying pre-assembled pcs but it doesn't seem worth it. The other thing is the sites I was considering apparently are a terrible headache to deal with if they ship you a pc with malfunctioning hardware. Thus I would like to build my own.

What are you going to use the PC for?
Gaming. Software Development. Specifically Dota 2 and the upcoming Diablo 3.

How much is your budget?
$800-$1300. This is a big range. I don't need top of the line products. I want something that has a good performance/price ratio and that will be able to run games well for the next 3-5 years.

Where are you located? (a.k.a. fill out your profile)

Are you willing to buy online?

Are you going to re-use any parts from an earlier build?
Yes. Here is what I currently have that I would consider reusing:
GPU : NVidia GeForce 7600 256 MB Mem(if I must but I would much rather upgrade, meets Dota 2 recommended GPU spec. Would like an HD card)
HDD: samsung sp2504c 250GB 300MB/s transfer speed 7200RPM. Apparently HDDs are expensive right now because of messed up production. I really don't mind re-using this. I know that Main Memory accesses are very slow and if I was to purchase a HDD it would have 1TB store space and ~600MB/s transfer speed. Will this difference affect the performance much? Is main memory accessed that often whi... Read more

Answer:Looking to buy new gaming rig

The i7 2600 will probably take too much of your budget and won't give any benefit over the cheaper i5 2500 for gaming. If you get the 2500K unlocked version and a $30 aftermarket CPU cooler you can easily get a 30%+ overclock.

A $50 case will do just fine, e.g. COOLER MASTER Elite 430, but if you ever think of going SLI or Crossfire in the future you might want to get a full tower case.

Sound card is up to you, personally I couldn't live without mine but depends how much you like your music.

The problem with warranties on pre-assembled PCs is that you have to send the entire PC back, whereas if you bought the PC yourself you can just send the faulty component back. Personally I find warranties vastly overrated and overpriced, either the component is faulty to begin with or it breaks down after 3-4 years by which time it's obsolete and depreciated to 25% of its original value.

In terms of compatibility the only things you need to worry about are the motherboard, RAM and CPU. The i5/i7 2500/2600 use socket 1155 motherboards and DDR3 RAM.

it depends on your budget. WoW doesn't need the best of the best hardware to run, so any budget from $500-$800 upward will make sense.

i'm thinking some sort of athlon64 socket 939, any motherboard except ecs, geforce 6600, gig of ram, chaintech av710, etc.

Hey guys, I'm looking to build a Gaming Rig for around £200-£350. I have the monitor, mouse, graphics card and keyboard sorted but I would like some advise with the rest. So far I have chosen:
ASUS M4A88TD-M USB3 AMD 880G Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad Core Processor

Corsair 4GB DDR3 RAM

Hard Drive

Seagate Barracuda 1TB

DVD Burner

Thermaltake V3 Black Edition Mid Tower Case

Power Supply

Cooler Master GX Series 650W
Can anyone suggest any cheaper/cost effective parts that wont blow the budget and the cheapest place to buy them. Also can someone tell me that everything listed will fit together and is compatible. Thanks in advance chaps.

I was just wondering of someone could give me some tips on which would be better for "GAMING".

A high end 775 motherboard with a high end core 2 duo cpu,

or an x58 mobo with the cheapest i7 cpu??

Answer:X58 vs 775 - gaming?

Neither for gaming. My advise, you want a good GPU and an i5 2500k so you can overclock. Since I don't know your budget this is just a recommendation.

Question: Gaming LCD

Ok folks I am going to be buying a new computer, top notch. I need a good Gaming LCD. I have been looking at the dell 2001FP. But I have read about mixed results. Does anybody have any comments. All i know is i want 1600X1200 and preferably 19inch or bigger. I am going to be waiting for a dell deal. Thanks

Answer:Gaming LCD

I just bought the 2005fpw (20" Widescreen) for $397. So far the widescreen is amazing, and it plays games well. There is a small amount of ghosting, but it really isn't too bad. For less than $400, I couldn't ask for a better monitor..

Question: Lag while gaming?

Ok well I don't know if this is related to software or hardware, but I am stumped

All of the games that I have been playing lately (valve's orange box, bad comany 2, etc) have this nasty problem. They run fine for 10 or so seconds the freeze for a few seconds, followed by about 5 seconds of 1fps then back to normal for 10 seconds and rinse, lather, repeat.

Its a fresh install of windows 7 ultimate, newest nvidia drivers, cleaned heat-sinks, fully operational fans, new power supply, new sata cable, reseated video card and cpu, etc... I am lost... Is my hardware finally becoming outdated? I hope not

cpu: Athlon II x2 240
Ram: 2gb ocz gold ddr2-800
GPU xfx geforce 9800GT
hdd: seagate barracuda 320gb 16mb cache sata 3.0
550w corsair psu

btw im pushing these all at 1080p, no temp stuttering at 720p, or 1080p with low settings, moderate at med settings, bad at high settings. I hear my fan kicking on alot but no dust on it (gpu), all of my case fans work, so its not overheating, its not a power issue, so I believe it may be a software issue but i have no clue where to start.

Reinstalling forceware as I type.

Answer:Lag while gaming?

what is the temp?

You are really pushing a 9800gt. The TIM could be drying up, despite all the fans.

Question: XP Pro and gaming?

I'm hoping this topic hasn't been beaten to pieces, but a few months ago I installed Windows XP Pro and soon after found I couldn't play a couple of already installed games, as well as get a couple of other things to work such as Create CD and a thing or two with my DVD player. Shortly after I got rid of XP and reverted back to my ME where all these things worked just fine as before. Now I want to reinstall XP Pro but with some help when I run into these same possible problems and others which may crop up. So,,,,,,,,help me please anyone!! Updates? Patches? Tricks? Thanks in advance

Answer:XP Pro and gaming?

the best way would be to dual boot XP and ME......that way you get the best of both worlds...........if you need any help or info on this, just ask.

good luck

Hello all, I just bought me a new pc ( HP Pavilion dv9925nr Notebook PC) and to go with the new pc, I bought Call of Duty 4. Just trying to play the Single player game resluts in very slow game play and unsmooth playing experience. I am pretty sure that I have updated my drivers which caused the game to become playable with everything off and at a low resolution. I am not sure on what specs I need to include but here is what have.

Model: AMD turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 Ghz

Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB

System type: 64-bit Operating System

Nivida Geforce Go 7150M

Answer:Need help with pc gaming

CoD 4 is going to put a heavy demand on your graphics chip, which wasn't really designed for heavy gaming in the first place. However, since it's such a great game, it would be a shame if you weren't able to enjoy it.

I would get the latest DirectX update: Latest DirectX Update.

After that, right click on the desktop, select NVIDI control panel. Under the Adjust Image Settings with Preview menu, use the slider at the bottom to run your drivers on "performance" instead of "quality", which is their default.

A lot of bad play may also be coming from your sound settings. I'd turn sound details to low and to off wherever given the option.

If it's still not quite there you can further adjust your 3D settings by going back to the nvidia control panel and using the drop down menu under program control to adjust call of duty iw3sp.exe

Question: Gaming PC

I am contemplating either buying a new pc or upgrading my Dell 1 ghz which is about three years old. I use it mostly for flight simulations and would welcome any advice on the best system/upgrade.Thanks in advance.

Answer:Gaming PC

I have just upgraded with AMD xp 2600 (2.2ghz) ASUS socket A motherboard, sparkle Ge force4 128mg grafix card (although 64mg would be fine).Grafix card is probably the thing that will affect gaming the most, so if you can afford it go for 128mg 8xAGP, Sparkle was cheapest for me at the time. Whats the cheapest gaming pc u can build ? thats future proof aswell

Answer:Help with gaming pc

Hey there, What sort of games would you be wanting this computer to play? Trouble is when you say futureproof that instantly makes the price go up massively and also no one knows that the future really holds when it computers to computers so anything could happen. You could aim to build a computer that would play all the latest games at high settings now and in a year it may only be able to play the latest games at medium settings.

I have permanent trouble to connect via Windows XP VPN to a friend to do LAN gaming. Many different Game software cannot see the game created on the other side.

The setup is:

Game - PC - Router - Internet - Router - PC - Game

we installed DMZ for both, we put both on the same subnet (192.168.1.x) and made sure there were no conflicts, we tried to connect to the VPN in different directions and swithc on who is starting the server, but no help.

The following things are odd:
When one connects to the VPN, the status of the connection shows the same IP for client and server. Is that normal?

Also, we cannot use the windows folder sharing, why?

Is there a step-by step explanation what MUST be there to do LAN gaming? Who has to connect? Is this a server/client relationship at all? what other things have to be active to make everything work?

Answer:VPN for LAN Gaming??

many games over the years have required the host to remove there router. as far as using a virtual private network, i dont even know that it can be done. why not play outside the vpn? i may be wrong but i think you are making this way to hard. lan parties dont even need the internet. you all just hook into 1 router or hub and have the host create a new server and boom-your racin or killin or whatever. what game are you trying to play?

are you sure you mean lan gaming or are you trying to play over the internet? lan is if you are all in the same room with your computers.
