Windows "Login" and "Logout" sound stopped working

Question: Windows "Login" and "Logout" sound stopped working

My Windows login and logout sounds have stopped working. I went to the control panal and checked in the "sounds" and the login sound worked when I tested it there plus I checked the sound mixer and all sliders are active and pulled up. What could be the problem? All other sounds are working?

Preferred Solution: Windows "Login" and "Logout" sound stopped working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I've installed Build 10041 and upgrade to 10049 three times now, each time I was able to do a search for Windows Update or Sound which would show me the correct results but this time, I'm not getting the right results. In the past I would do a Reset and the search results were fine but this time I did an install.

Search examples:
< "Windows Update"
> The Windows Update app would appear in the search results.

< "Sound"
> The Sound app would appear in the search results.
Plz let me know if you have any ideas on how to fix this and/or where I can find the executables.

"A problem caused [name of program] to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." But no solution shows. I have been using the same HP Pavilion tx1000 for a year and a half with no software or compatibility issues. I run Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1 - 32 bit. Slowly this message began to appear with every microsoft program I opened and then started to spread to non microsoft programs. I tried reinstalling the programs, doing a system restore to the oldest restore point I could, I also tried uninstalling any window updates that were installed right before my problems. I have read some strings that indicate it may be a compatibility issue between the service pack 1 and vista but the service pack came with the computer and it has been working fine until recently. I am at loss what to try next. Has anyone using Vista Home Home Premium experience anything like this!!!

I recently got a new laptop and I've been having a lot of trouble with the sound. It is the laptop seen here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1218090329155

Sometime the audio works, but then if I pause a song and attempt to resume it a few minutes later, errors occur and the audio seems to be disabled.

"Windows Audio has stopped working" flashes quickly, followed by:

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed
A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Then, if I right click on the small volume icon in the bottom right by the time, go to "Playback Devices" I get the following message:

"This computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled.

Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?"

I click yes and the audio works again, but even after this it still acts funny.

Things of note:Sometimes the Volume Up/Down/Off buttons on my keyboard work, and sometimes they do not.
After this problem occurs and I restart it by going to Playback Devices, the audio cannot be turned up/down in Windows Media Player. I must manually adjust my (external) speakers.
I'm using Windows Media Player because Songbird and iTunes seem to freeze up every time I try to play music through them

I have a piece of software that periodically fails for some unknown reason. I have pretty much given up on trying to figure out what its problem is. I simply respawn the process if it fails to respond or no longer exists. The process runs several times a
minute. Occasionally, I get an error message saying my software "has stopped working" followed by another messagebox saying my software "is restarting". And then it restarts my process. This is beyond stupid since my process requires command
line arguments that are not being provided when this restart occurs. I simply want to disable these messages or at least
disable this auto restart. Is there any way to do this?

I have already tried the regedit hack:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting]
"DontShowUI "=dword:00000001

This didnt work. I still get these messages.

chkdsk came up with nothing.
as per suggestion by another user I booted into safe mode -- the crashes do not occur within safe mode -- good to know. I opened cmd and ran 'sfc /scannow'. no results.

also, a user suggested it may be my ram -- I don't believe this is the case because my XP installation runs just fine on the same hardware.

i restarted the computer into normal windows and even before windows could boot it said userinit.exe and runoncewrapper both crashed then windows media player, then realtek audio, then nvidia, and a ton of other processes. In fact it seems like every process that runs it happens to, even the screensaver. thats what i mean by it being system programs.

Also, it seems to for whatever reason be knocking my games from 40fps down to 12.

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

For a couple weeks now, My laptop has been making a "pop" sound everytime on start up after the windows logo comes together it makes a faint pop sound then continues to the login screen. Everytime I muted or unmuted the speakers it would make the sound too. I changed my driver the the Windows default and it stopped but the pop won't.

Laptop Model / Manufacturer : Gateway NV53A
Sound Driver : Realtek (But changed to Windows Default)

Answer:Laptop speakers emit a "pop" sound after "Starting Windows"

The windows default is the culprit here.

When your system boots, drivers started one after another, the pop sound came in because the default driver is not built to especially manage your audio card.

Download the driver from the manufacturer according to your model, install it and I assure you all will be fine.

Answer:*RESOLVED* Media Center "Tuner Not Found" error, "Receiver service has stopped"

Okay, I resolved the first two issues, Tuner error and ehrecvr error. It had to do with multiple Admin user accounts on my computer. My computer was originally set up with a user Robert Baker with full privileges as administrator. I then also set up a MediaCenter account with full privilidges. For whatever reason the MediaCenter account has access to EVERY action on the computer except starting the ehrecvr service.1.  First set Media Center Service Launcher to log on at NT Authority    Services > Right-Click Windows Media Center Service Launcher > Properties > Log On tab > Log On As 'This account: ' > Type " NT AUTHORITY/LocalService " > Click Apply > General tab > Start service.2. I then set the Media Center Scheduler Service AND Media Center Receiver Service to log on as my other admin account. Same as above but with other account credentials and started the services.3. Reboot and no ehrecvr errors. Since this was a good sign I tried WMC and was able to set up my TV fine.I STILL, however, get the "Upgrade in progress" message when I open Media Center. Anyone know how to fix that? I've run setup again and can't get rid of it.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Answer:help me please! about "POP""IMAP""SMTP" incoming/outgoing mail server for Tbird...

afaik hotmail does not provide pop\imap or smtp for free you may get it if you pay for the hotmail service but i would not recommend you do that just so you can get pop\imap or smtp

hrrm tbird and hotmail from the thunderbird faq
Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/.

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Joe.

We used to have "stereo mix" option that enabled streaming audio recording without having to have the audio playing through the speakers. How do I do that now? What replaces that capability? Who makes my sound card? Why is that not readily available somewhere in Dell land? I can't believe forum searching found pretty much nothing on this.

Answer:Latitude E6530 Windows 10 no "stereo mix" option for sound input device, only "high definition audio device" with Microsoft driver and unknown manufacturer.

aj_chicagoWho makes my sound card?
Hello. The audio chip manufacturer was IDT.
aj_chicagoWhat replaces that capability?
IDT doesn't have "stereo mix", so I'm not sure how you used to have it on the E6530. IDT has an equivalent capability that it calls Rec.Playback. That can be found in the list of recording devices, after the IDT driver is installed.
aj_chicagoHow do I do that now?
Dell doesn't support audio on an E6530 that has had Win10 installed. The IDT company went out of the consumer audio business long before there was a Win10 OS, so there is no Win10 IDT driver for that model. Your computer is currently using the Windows native audio driver, which, as you say, does not support a stereo mix kind of feature.
You should be able to install the IDT driver for Win7 by installing with compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the dri... Read more

To whom it may concern,
I would like to set my default to my Bluetooth headset for meetings.  FYI-I currently have a microphone issue and it doesn't work.   I am thinking if I can default to my Bluetooth, then I can by pass the laptop's microphone issue and still have meetings via webex or Google hangouts for example.
I am able to "connect" the computer and LG HBS760 successful.
However, can't seem to tell the computer to recognize the blue tooth as it sends the sound the computer fine (not the Bluetooth), however, the audience cannot hear me talk back because of the microphone issue.  Hence... trying to swap the default sound to the Bluetooth.
My Troubleshooting steps...
1) I went to control panel, then "Sound", then "Playback" ... and nothing was listed.  According to the LG Bluetooth help... it said I should see several things displayed, included a "Bluetooth Headset" option... then I should be able to click it as the "default device".
Please advise me :)

Stephanie

Answer:my Dell Latitude EE6530 - I would like to set my "Sound" "default" to my Bluetooth headset for meetings

DaveSteph11 I went to control panel, then "Sound", then "Playback" ... and nothing was listed.  According to the LG Bluetooth help... it said I should see several things displayed, included a "Bluetooth Headset" option... then I should be able to click it as the "default device".
Hello. Even though a headset seems like a single device, to Windows it is 2 separate devices: a playback device (headphones), and a recording device (microphone). So for the mic to become active, you have to go to the Recording tab and make the Bluetooth device the default.
DaveSteph11I am able to "connect" the computer and LG HBS760 successful.
But if you do not see your Bluetooth microphone in the list of recording devices, then the headset still is not paired or connected correctly. That is a radio issue outside my area which is audio, so someone else will have to help with that.
When you reply back you should say which variety of Windows is on the laptop. Dell supplies Bluetooth drivers for every Windows from XP through 8 on the Latitude E6530, so if 8.1 or 10 is your operating system it could be the cause of some issues.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

Virus scan didn't find alerts of any kind

To make a long story short- below is the log file of HiJackThis. Please review it and reply if you see something to be concerned with for repairing my computer.

Answer:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

Hello guys, the last week I've been strugling with these nasty BSODs. At first I thought it was my HDDs as ntoskrn.exe somewhat hinted towards that from googling it. My HDDs have been causing a lot of trouble earlier as well due to their somewhat long years of service. However, I've recently reformated my computer and installed W7 on a brand new Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD hoping the BSODs would go away, they didn't.

I googled BSOD and I stumbled upon this forum and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm somewhat desperate, as I need my computer working for both work, school and amusement.

I've been trying to run Memtest in order to test my memory but without any results. I'm also currently running on only on 4GB chip instead of two, to see if the problem still exists. Also, without any results.

This is the second time I'm writing this thread btw, I was just about to post it and my PC crashed.

Here is my two logs + dxdiag (last crash didn't generate a log oddly enough).

Here is additional hardware/gear that I use:

Razer Megalodon 7.1 Headset
Razer Naga
Logitech G19
Logitech C920 (Webcam)
Corsair 750W PSU

My temperatures are also good. Both CPU and MB idles at around ~25. GPU's all good too. I'm also using a Corsair 650D chassi with dustfilters at both air-income so dust is minimal. On top off this, I use airpressure to clean away dust somewhat regularly and I also did exactly this 2 days ago when I reinstalled the pc.

Hey there...I found a folder that I've never seen in my D partition before...I partition my hdd into 3 parts...C=OS installation...D=Programs and Games...E=Misc downloads and music and pr0n ...

Well I've never had a virus or anything in my D partition before...I just found this folder named "winnt" and it had some bat files and some kind of Airline JScript and something that looks like an airplane tracker...

Then in a folder named sdata (still in the winnt folder) there's files like 911, police, air, fire, etc...OMFG!!! This is like some terrorist thing or something...FBI is gonna find me and I'll never see the light of day again!!! I'll miss the [H] and I haven't even watched LOTR Extended Platinum Collectors DVD thing (the big ass package with those book holder things)...I haven't even completed Doom 3 or started playing HL2 or even had a chance to buy an X-Box and play Halo 2!!!

AHHHHHH!!!!!! WTF is this crap on my computer??? I'm gonna delete this...I should delete it right??? Scans say it isn't a virus but what do they know...I'm screwed...

Windows 7 Home Premium

I would provide a screenshot (or three) however that is at the crux of my problem - I should perhaps say my current problem...now, with "7" (I am beginning to tire RAPIDLY of 7, much more quickly than I did with either XP, or Vista).

PROBLEM: When I attempt to "Save As" a document (Notepad, for instance), or even a Paint image, I get a window/page/screen/whatever, that has no "Buttons" ... no button to "Save", no button to "Cancel". Simply NO BUTTONS???

I had this problem the other night, and we "faked" or cheated our way through it, by using the Enter (Return?) Key to advance the cursor (cursor??) to where we wanted to be (well, we "hoped" we were "there", anyway, since we could not "see" what button or drop-down dialog box was selected or highlighted).

It's almost as if I had a "Resolution" problem, whereby the resolution is set too low (say, 800 x 600), things are too big to be seen/won't FIT on the page. However, my resolution is set to the "Recommended" 1366 x 768.

Please help...this Netbook would be a WHOLE LOT easier to throw against a wall than my desktops ever were . . .

Thanks in advance,
glenn . . .
PS, Hoping I was/am clear here...under the drop-down boxes of "File Name" and "Save as Type", there is nothing to select - not "Save" or "OK" or "Cancel" ... NOTHING????... Read more

Hi,

Type dpi into the Search box and choose "Make text smaller or larger" at the top of the search result list. In the window that opens see what it is set to. You want it at 100% rather than 125% or 150%. So if higher than 100% change it back to 100%. Hit Apply. You will need to reboot. See if that helps.

I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I have question about when to use "Home", "Work" and "Public" profile.

If I am logging in without setting password, and I am logging in network with "Public" profile, then will any other user, who can see my computer, be able to enter my computer and check the contents on my computer ?

I am connecting to a network and there are 6 other users connected to this network. In the set network location window, if I select the netwoek as "Home", does it mean that other 6 users will not be able to see my computer on network and if I use "Public", then all other six users will be able to see my computer on network ?

Thanks

Hi everyone!

Yesterday my HP laptop (Windows 7) started getting BSOD with various types of errors (mostly "STOP: 0x00000F4", "STOP: 0x0000007A", "c00021a" and one "missing %hs, c0000135"). Most of the time it restarts without any issues and works fine right after the BSOD and then an hour or two later I get a BSOD again.

I have tried restoring to Last Known Good Configuration, startup repair, hard disk check, virus scans and I also uninstalled any recently added programs I could think of and cleared up more than 50% of my hard disk space. None of these seem to have helped and I still get BSOD regularly.

I have attached the folder from the SF Diagnostic Tool and would appreciate any advice!
Thank you!

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

Answer:Changing the "minimize" "maximize" and "close" buttons of a theme

Use Windows Style Builder to do that...

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. The first time it happened, it allowed me to start from a system restore point, but then it crashed again and now doing a system restore doesn't even let me start up windows normally.

I looked in the "device manager" driver section and it has an exclamation mark next to the "Consumer IR Devices" in the "System Devices" section and It says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

I click on "check for solutions" it doesn't do anything, and I have tried uninstalling and restarting the computer, and also the "update driver" option but it says windows has determined it is up to date.

Does anyone have any solutions, this is soooooo frustrating!!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome
Lets try to diagnose, go in with safe mode and set up clean boot. Does that worK
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If yes follow instructions to find the problem
If no
Go in via safe mode find out the necessary information about the driver then go to the website to download to desktop. Then install.
Follow this tut to up date the driver
Device Manager - Install Driver
If it cannot be updated in this way, follow to step 7 and go to website and explained above.

If you unistall the driver, you can use automatic update.

I am not sure if that is your problem, however.
You may want to go in via, safe mode and set up a new account.
Download Security Essentials
and Malwarebytes and check for virus and malware. Do the full scan and update first.
If the new account does indeed work for you.

I was having an issue with my Windows 7 cursor flickering between 'arrow' and 'working in background' at an irritianting rate and found the following TechSupportGuy thread a couple of minutes ago:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/642572-mouse-cursor-constantly-flickering-between.html

One of the posts in the thread lead me to the solution but unfortunately it seems most people have opted for reinstalling the OS instead!

Given the the original thread is closed I decided to create a new one and post the solution here in an attempt to prevent people from taking such drastic measures to get rid of this (incredibly irritant) issue in the future.

I simply disabled the Windows Search service and killed the process behind it (SearchIndexer.exe) in Task Manager. My cursor is now back to normal

Disabling this service means any new files will not be indexed although you can re-enable it and leave the pc running for a couple of hours every now and again so that new files are indexed. Hope this helps!

I have been playing the game for a few weeks now in my spare time on my Windows 10 desktop and have acquired some bonus packs, a dozen vehicles, upgrades, unlocked 5 seasons, and moved my user rank up to 4824 in the multiplayer ranks amongst various other things. I do not want to lose my progress but for the first time i wanted to upload a ghost the other day and seen that (it seems) I will lose all progress if I log into Facebook now. Also, I noticed that my "local account" doesn't transfer my save data when I log into the game on my Windows 10 laptop (which is super inconvenient because I am rarely home). I seen topics posted that a Facebook sync fixes this but I am afraid I will lose all my progress.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Answer:On Windows 10: "Asphalt 8 Airborne" can I sync my "local account" with my "Facebook Account?"

I am with you on this. I'm having the same problem, and the Customer Care form at Gameloft is not set-up yet for inquiries on desktop platforms. Also, search engines are hard to trigger relative informaiton on the subject. I have no intention of changing over to my Facebook "version" if the progress isn't going to be transferred.
It's just a new problem brought around to headline the Windows 10 updates. I'm sure there will be a wait time, but there has got to be a flood of new Win10 users that are firing up their CC services for a fix.
If I find out that it fixable, I'll get back to this thread.

Whenever I load up certain games on Steam, or certain other games and programs on my computer, the first few seconds of the intro or logos will come up, then black screen, then the following message:

"Windows Explorer has stopped working..."

Then it says it's "restarting". I get another black screen, then I'm at desktop with my game minimized. I try to bring it back up, and it happens again.

Sometimes, after four or five tries the game or program fully comes up and I'm able to play/use it for a little while (usually around 30 minutes to an hour) when it happens AGAIN, minimizing the game/program.

Rarely will it come up after just turning on my computer, but also in my taskbar none of the objects currently up seem to appear anymore, it looks like this now:
So, apparently nothing is showing up in that area for some odd reason.
I'm using Windows Vista 64 bit.

This has been going on for some time, here's what I've tried so far:
1. Multiple virus and spyware scans with: AVG, Malware Bytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, and AdAware.
2. A Disk check of both C and F drives, which came up with a "few errors" that were "fixed".
3. Double checking all open processes, none of which were abnormal.
4. Disabled UAC (Did that a long time ago)
5. Disabled thumbnails, and used icons instead
6. Clear history, cookies, and all temporary internet files

Please help!! I keep getting these two error messages and I'm not very savvy when it comes to repairing a computer... I tried to restart and troubleshoot, but to no avail, I still get the same errors... it started a few days ago, but even system restore did nothing to help the problem... Please, if anyone can help with this, I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks in advance, and hope you all have a great night!

I have a fundamental problem and I know I will be told to revert to an older version of Mac/VMWare or just to Linux, but I'm so close to get everything working.

Basically, I just want to be able to do work with assembly language for the Computer Science degree I'm doing at DMU. To do this I have to have installed:
- Kate (KDE)
- GDB
- Insight
- NASM
- LD
I have managed to install Kate, GDB and NASM (using MacPorts) with the ability to install Insight if I can get the linker (ld) up and running.

Now, the main error message I got was through following these commands (in the Kate terminal) - my program being "eatsyscall.asm:"
bash-3.2$ nasm -f elf -g -F stabs eatsyscall.asm
bash-3.2$ ld -m elf_i386 -o eatsyscall eatsyscall.o
ld: warning: option -m is obsolete and being ignored
ld: file not found: elf_i386
I ran "-m elf_i386" due to the fact I am running a 64-bit OS and Jeff Duntemann says so.

I did an "ld -v," which gave me:
@(#)PROGRAM:ld PROJECT:ld64-136
configured to support archs: armv6 armv7 armv7s i386 x86_64
LTO support using: LLVM version 3.2svn, from Apple Clang 4.2 (build 425.0.24)

Following this, I basically searched for every MacPort containing "elf_i386" and "i386" and "gcc" and installed every one apart from "i386-rtems-gcc" of which I got an error when attempting to install:

Sometime over the last few weeks Google's "More" drop-down and its "Search Tools" menu items have quit working in IE10. The other buttons that let you select web, images, shopping, etc. still work properly.

The "More" and "Search Tools" buttons get focus when the mouse is over them and they animate when clicked but nothing happens. I have Google Chrome and Apple's Safari installed and the buttons work properly on these browsers.

I've googled it but most of the posts found are about a not-quite-the-same problem of the buttons just working momentarily. At any rate, I tried the fix [clearing cache and cookies] that some of the posters said worked but it didn't make any difference.

I've disabled all of the ad-ons and the problem is still there. I re-enabled each add-on one at a time and tried it but none of them had any effect.

I've disabled my Norton Security Suite and the problem still exists.

I've reset IE and, other than losing all of my saved passwords, it too made no difference.

I think this might be a useful clue.

I noticed that for all of the buttons that are working, when I pass the mouse pointer over them it displays a URL down in the status bar. However, for the two that are not working nothing is displayed. It appears that the controls associated with these buttons either don't exist or are being blocked.

Does anyone have the solution for this, or at least and idea of what the problem is?

Thanks in advance for ... Read more

Answer:Google "More" and "Search Tools" buttons no longer working...

Hello Howard,

you can observe one thing here. All the menu items are just links. But More and Search Tools menu items are different. More is drop down menu and Search Tools also kind of drop down but with sub menu items.

So it seems like there are some script errors with your IE 10 browser.

But i am sorry, re installing IE is the only option i can suggest.

Hi there,
I am getting a repeated "Windows Module Installer has stopped working" message which says that the file that describes the problem is:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue\AppCrash_TrustedInstaller_5480538538f23ac44dfcd994b 3e5d340663098_cab_670b9c43\WER9B8A.tmp.hdmp.

Windows Update hangs and gives no error message but says no Windows Updates have been carried out (ever). Have tried to run SURT but it just hangs on the first step, searching for updates (left it for 3 hours or so). SFC Scan gives error message "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service". I attach CBS folder.

Be very grateful for any help.

Best

Hello all. I hope this is the right place to post this support thread.

I am trying to install Open Office, but every time it is crashing during the installation process. This has happened the same way for three different .exes from their website - 4.1.1 en-GB, 4.0.1 en-GB, and 4.1.1 en-US.

I run the .exe, click next on Installation Preparation, select a location to unpack the files, and it extracts them. Once it reaches the Installation Wizard window, it works on 'Computing space requirements' for a second or two, and then crashes, saying "Windows(R) installer has stopped working".

I have looked around a couple of help threads, and tried a few things. I have been into regedit, but there was nothing except '(default)' under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions. I ran 'sfc /scannow' in the command prompt, but got "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". Can anyone suggest a fix? Thank you

While not a solution to fix your problem, here is something you could try to get a free Office suite.

I have Libre Office Portable, similar to Open Office, and the portable version doesn't install Libre Office.

There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason for it... it just arbitrarily shows up from time to time. It's not related to booting Vista, I don't think, b/c it'll pop up occasionally during the same session.

I'm getting this problem on a desktop running Windows 7 and on a laptop running Vista.

On the Win7 system (on which I'm typing this,) I'm getting the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and "Windows Explorer is restarting" message pair every time I try to open any program from the desktop (such as MalwareBytes, Spybot, IrfanView, anything,) using right click and "Run As Administrator." They'll open and run normally if I do the ordinary left-click, or if I right-click and "Run As Admin" from the Start menu.

On the Vista laptop it's less consistent and seemingly not dependent on the right-click/Admin selection. On vacation I tried to download and run Verizon's VZAccessManager software - so as to use my ancient flip-phone as a tether - and couldn't get the system to detect the phone ("A wireless device was not detected!" is the message I would get.) After attempting multiple tweaks with the assistance of Verizon Tech Support via that phone, he came to the conclusion that I've got a problem with the system - something running on it that shouldn't be there.

On both systems there's also been a marked delay time in program initiation (when they start at all,) and running the usual malware/spyware detection programs such as MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot S&D, etc., comes up empty; the same with virus scans.

Though the coincidence suggests a connection and that it&#... Read more

I know this issue has been brought up before, but I am unable to solve the problem following the below solution -

Index - Windows Search Service

I am using a Vista Home Premium 64 bit computer, and when I try to do this solution the computer tells me that I am unable to get access to the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows. It says "You don't currently have access to this folder", and when I click "Continue for access" nothing happens.

This problem is plaguing me and I would love to have it resolved.

Thank you for helping.

I've got a fully patched version of Windows 7 Professional.

When I'm running Windows Update, I get to the window that lists the updates that are available, e.g. "3 optional updates are available, 2 important update are available," or whatever.
If I then click on one of those links to get a list of what the updates are, Windows Explorer crashes. Every single time. It gives the message "Windows Explorer has stopped working."
I have tried running in Safe mode, except Windows Update doesn't run in Safe mode so that's no help.
I've tried setting up a clean boot. That didn't help.
I've scanned for viruses with a couple of different anti-virus/malware products. Nothing found.
I've run sfc /scannnow. It found no errors.
Any other ideas?

Hi

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a Lenovo T510.

Every single time I do a Properties on My Computer, I get this pop up message that "Windows Control Panel has stopped working". Oddly, I just cancel that window and everything otherwise seems to work normally. But it happens every time and I can't figure out why.

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

Answer:"Windows Control Panel has stopped working" on My Computer Properties

Hi

This usually happens when you dont remove the software completely, some process are attached to the Windows Explorer ... thats causing this.

Try using Autoruns and look under Explorer... and look for file that highlighted in yellow.. usually should say "File not Found". Uncheck or delete these and restart you computer.

Try these and let me know.

Hello, this is my first post here on this forum.
About a week or two, I Downgraded my Computer (Dell l502x) from Windows 8 to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bits, installed the drivers from the Dell Page, and everything worked good, except for the Realtek HD Audio Driver Version 6.0.1.6312 (Recommended for my PC on Dell Website), This is the problem:
When I Start my computer, a message shows up with the following error: "Realtek HD Audio Manager has stopped working" and then, I Have to close the message and open Realtek HD Audio Manager again from the Control Panel. I Have already tried re-installing Windows and the error keeps appearing After I Install that driver, I Was wondering if maybe that version of the driver is faulty or something (It would be weird, since it's the one Dell recommends for this computer on the page)
I Have visited many forums, including this one looking for a fix to this issue, but I have not found a solution yet. So I was wondering if someone had this issue before and has a solution to this annoying problem.
any Help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Here's a picture of the issue im having when I start Windows 7 (It's in Spanish, but I think you will understand it)

Answer:"Realtek HD Audio Manager has stopped working" at Windows Startup

Try the R275 version on the RealTek site. Its the latest version and will work on your PC. When you run the Realtek installation the first thing it will do is uninstall the current version you have installed and then restart the PC. After the restart it will continue and install the R275 version. This is the version I have on all my PC's for both Win 7 64 bit and Win 8 64 bit.

Download the High Definition Audio Codec R.275 64 bit OS version.

Hello,
I problem I have been geting in the past 2 days is that whenever I use the search index, like for example look in my librarys, program files, or look for anything on my computer, a box pops up saying "Windows explorer has stopped working", and whatever im searching for will automaticaly close. This is very frustrating because like everyone who owns a PC I search for files and such, and I have tried many things to try and fix this, including:

-System restore
-Uninstalling windows updates
-Restarting computer
-Disabeling Index service
-Disabeling Windows search service

I have read of a solution to this problem that involves deleting files related to the index, but again I cannot do this because every time I look in search index it automaticaly closes.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Search Index "Windows explorer has stopped working" error

Try to do system file check first:
Start-->cmd (run as administrator)-->sfc /scannow (space between sfc and /)

If it does not work
Try a scan disk.
Disk Check

If it doesn't work, you might want to do a Repair Install , it will preserve your data, user account, and system driver

A friend at work experienced the same problem on his PC. Turns out he had a corrupt indexing file. You could try posting the details from Event Viewer, if that is possible. I wouldn't be able to help you interpreting them, but maybe some of the more experienced members could.

Have you tried disabling Windows Search? I did this on my friend's PC as a temporary measure . Got IE working, although searches were rather slow. It isn't a solution, but it could afford you a temporary -- albeit inconvenient -- workaround.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Stick around, though, and wait for inputs from the more knowledgeable members.

I tried to rename computer and now there's two entries in log in screen. That new one is set as default and wouldn't accept any password but original (normal) one does. Long in is set on auto but still have to chose between those 2 when starting/restarting.
I can't find that new one anywhere to disable/delete it. Not in Users or any other place for handling accounts.
How to get rid of or where to find it ?

Answer:Reanamed "Computer", now 2 of "Me" at login screen.

Not knowing if this is what happened in your case, but what you describe occasionally happens when Windows is set up to sign in automatically to a user account and then computer name is changed.

The reason is that a full username as long as Windows is concerned is different than username from user's point of view; Mike in your case or Kari in mine are usernames for most we do and need to use a username for but actually they are just user profile names. For Windows the username is ComputerName\UserProfileName.

On laptop I am writing this for instance my full username is AGM-W10LAP01\Kari, even when I am in fact using a Microsoft account. Three different things: my Windows sign-in user account is a Microsoft account [email protected], my user profile name is Kari, my full username is AGM-W10LAP01\Kari.

Long story short, that other you which does not accept your password is doing so because it is user OldComputerName\Mike. That computer name is no longer valid making the username invalid.

I've seen the duplicate using old computer name as part of full username going away when Windows after computer name change is then set to sign in automatically with a local admin account. Restart and remove automatic sign in and see if it works.

Kari

Hello,

I'd be very glad if anyone could help me.

Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" (see attached screenshot). No solution is provided.

The computer is rather new (3 weeks old) and has very few programs installed. Since I don't use the task manager very often, I don't know when this problem started, but it wasn't there from the beginning.

Things I tried, but did not work:

- Going back to a previous restore point: same problem.

- Running a RAM memory test with memtest86, no problems found.

- Performing a clean boot using msconfig.exe and disabling all programs, with the exception of Microsoft services. The problem remained.

- Scanning the computer for virus and malware. Installed Malwarebytes, nothing found. Using Kaspersky anti-virus, no problems found.

- Using the system file checker tool. I used it twice and it did indeed find problems, but said it could not fix them.

Hi there,

Recently switched a laptop for a family member back from Windows 8 to Windows 7, thought all would be fine, but am running into some issues.

The laptop is an HP Envy Sleekbook 6 1126sa: HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1126sa Product Specifications | HP? Support - and their site only lists drivers for windows 8.

After some googling I managed to find drivers for most things, apart from the touch pad, which is overly sensitive to clicks, and not sensitive enough to movement now. I'm sure that this could be fixed however with the correct driver, but do not know where to find it! Anyone?

The HP site says the touchpad is a: HP ImagePad with on/off button

The biggest problem though, is that a LOT of programs such as itunes, vlc, etc, did not work the first time I tried to run them, saying "_Application name here_ has stopped working" after clicking on their shortcut. However, if I then set them to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7, they'd work fine!

Not a huge issue, but it is irritating, and I'd like to know if anyone has any idea if it's fixable. I wonder if this too could be a driver issue? Though it's so inconsistent on which programs it does it with that I have really no idea.

Weirdly, the first program this error surfaced with, was when trying to run the Windows Performance Index thing, is the only additional info I can think of to start with.

Any help appreciated, thanks!

"Windows Explorer has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..." and then "Windows explorer is restarting"

It only seems to happen to recently installed/created programs.

(this has been happening for about a month)

Also when I was using a compiler called Dev-C++ it gave me an error message "out of memory" after about 20 minutes, so that I had to close it using task manager.

Do you get the error if you start program from the start menu or just your desktop? Have you tried deleting the shortcuts and making new ones?

Please help me on how to stop this...

Answer:Nonstop "Windows Explorer has stopped working" Error...

I think it may be a virus. If you can do a virus scan. If not, if you can remove the hard drive and install it into another pc as a slave and do a virus scan on it there.

I have just bought a new laptop 2 weeks ago, pre-installed with Vista Home Premium and I haven't had any problems until just yesterday with this new OS. I've searched all over the internet for solutions, but the people who have the same problem seem to have problems with malware or spyware. Some people have suggested uninstalling programs that might have been installed on the current date, but the only program I have installed is Avast anti virus. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with spyware but just to be sure I am running an anti virus scan again (I already did before and found nothing).
Oh ya forgot about the problem: Everytime I open my Program Files folder under the C drive a message comes up saying that Windows Explorer has stopped working, then Searching for a solution and then it just restarts windows explorer. I have checked with other folders and this doesn't happen. Weird thing is though that when I changed the way I view the folder for (previously my) documents, from details to tiles (the icons), the same thing happened. And when I open program files for a brief 2 seconds, it's in tiles mode.
Sorry the message is so long, just wanted to be exact. Anyone else have/had this problem or have a solution?

P.S. is Avast even any good of an anti virus?
P.P.S. I am able to access control panel and add/remove programs (program features) and this problem doesn't occur when I login in - as it did for some people

I have added a Hijackt... Read more

Answer:"Windows Explorer has stopped working" error message

Yes I had the same problem unfortunately. I'm no computer tech, in fact, using this Vista programme seems to be a bit of a pain. But because of our problem and others, I'm learning fast. I nearly gave up hope and just before I threw the thing accross the room I thought "why not reinstall vista". It actually worked because the computer thought it was starting up for the first time. No probs. I cant say it will work for sure for you but I do no this, not meaning to scare you, I have only used this programme for 6 months and have had a great deal of hassle. Also from the feedback I have encountered, unless microsoft do something soon, you will need to brace yourself because there are too many faults with the programme. Good Luck. Z

On every reboot I get a rash of "Windows Command Processor has stopped working" popups; four or more.
I'm fairly certain that two of these are related to Chrome Desktop Application shortcuts. The commands issued are of the form:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --app=http://www.zzz.co.uk/apps/tracking/?parcel=1234567890

However, if I close the Chrome Desktop Shortcut window, and start it again, I don't get the failure. So far, I haven't found any way to cause the popup on demand.

Others popups may be caused by stuff in my startup folder (wherever that's gone) or programs started automatically at startup by the scheduled tasks mechanism (or whatever that's called these days).

Any ideas what might be going on, and how to fix it?

Hey guys,

When I am on my computer, I continuously get the "Windows Explorer has stopped working.." error, and then "Windows Explorer is restarting.."

It doesn't matter what I am doing, and it occurs roughly every 1 minute. Sometimes less.

I'm not sure what the problem is. It started happening randomly about two days ago, and I had not installed anything that I could remember. I have since scanned my computer with Malwarebytes, Windows Defender, Spybot Search & Destroy, and the Microsoft Malicious Malware Removal Tool.

Today, I decide to take a break from my Fedora partition and actually load into windows. It had been a day or two and i knew my thunderbird would be bursting at the seams with emails.

I boot.
It chugs a bit more than usual.
I get an error message about 5 minutes after I boot.
"Host process for windows services stopped working and was closed"
It said more than that, but it was all trivial information about what might have caused it and whatnot- then it popped up a windows help browser suggesting i run windows updates, because apparently every problem can be fixed with an update (it wasn't).

This shows up every time I boot. It doesn't really seem to be affecting anything (yet), but it still perturbs me and all the things I find on google seem to be particularly vague in the direction of something in the event log without telling me exactly why i'm there or what I'm looking for, let alone how to go about it.

So, what do I do to alleviate myself of this little dialog at login?

Kthnxbye.

I was surfing the net like I normally do this morning and I received a prompt that said "Windows Explorer has stopped working". There is a progress bar and it says "Windows is checking for a solution to this problem" below that. After a few seconds that box goes away, and I get another one that says "Windows explorer is restarting". Now, this doesn't just happen once. Its on a loop, and I can't do anything else on my computer. If I hit cancel, on one of the boxes, the other one appears and it starts where it left off. Every once in a while, like about every 100 boxes or so, I'll get a prompt asking me if I want to send more information about the problem to microsoft. If I click send information, or cancel, the loop starts again. If I do nothing, that box remains there, and I can not access anything else on my computer.

When I restart in safe mode, the same thing happens except there are no boxes. Windows explorer just restarts every 2-3 seconds and I can't even get the start menu open before it closes on me again.

I tried doing a system restore through my install cd, but that did not help the problem. I also had a BSOD once or twice when trying to open something while the errors messages were coming up.

Any idea as to what is causing this? Or how to fix it? I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium.

Hi, On my Windows Vista OS some but not all Programmes when I try to install them I get the message "install Programme stopped working" and I cannot Install the programme.
Is there an easy fix or a settings I can change to get around this problem?
Kind regards Blood.

Answer:Windows Vista "Install Programme" has stopped working

Are you rightclicking and choosing 'Run as Administrator' when you install them?
is there anything more in the message - like name of which program install has stopped working.
Are you installing a program d/loaded and saved to your Downloads folder or running the install straight from the internet Or is it a program on a DVD?
What antivirus and security etc programs have you got running? (they may be stopping the install)

Hi All,

Let me get right to the point...

Background:
I just changed my hard disk because my old one's integrity is at 2% to a point where I couldn't even load Windows. So, I reinstalled everything: Win 7 Ultimate x32 and all other third-party software that I use. All the installation process worked smoothly... no error or warning of any kind. I always have 2 users set up on my computer: one is the (system's predefined) Administrator; and another is a user with near-admin privileges (a power user) that I use for daily operations and it has almost all access to my data partition drive (I set up the security permission for this user on the data drive).

Problem:
The problem started after I created the second user and set up the security permission for this user. I can read, write, modify, even delete a file on the data partition, but I cannot move that same file to another folder still within the data partition to which this user has access. The error was always: "Windows Explorer stopped working" and it had to refresh/restart.

Solutions tried (based on my browsing similar "Windows Explorer stopped working" problems in this forum):
- First, I tried giving the user group(s) (the groups that this user belong to: Users, Power Users, etc.) the permissions that I wanted -- same problem.
- Second, I tried giving the actual user, instead of just the user group, the permissions that I wanted -- same problem.
- I tried giving the user full control/permission -... Read more

Answer:"Windows Explorer stopped working" whenever trying to move a file

Does this happen with just one particular file or for any file on the data drive?

Did you try taking ownership of the file with the non-admin account?

This is sort of odd. I'm moving some folders from my laptop's internal HD to an external one (actually copy and delete, but close enough), but with one folder I can't get to first base. Just one. I haven't had a problem using the drag-and-drop method inside WE for any of the others.

It doesn't matter whether I click on the folder on the left side directory tree column or the right side "folders and file" column, Explorer still craps out, generating the subject message. It then restarts itself.

The computer is an older Gateway that is maxed out at 2 gigs of ram. I was wondering if this might be part of the problem, but I don't think so. Not when I can successfully do a multi-folder drag and drop several gigs in size.

I have tried rebooting the system to see if that made a difference; it didn't. And I've attempted the transfer with no other windows open. That didn't make a difference either.

Finally, in order to move the files onto the external drive, I opened up a DOS window and copied them over the old fashioned way. Once the folder was empty, I was able to delete it from within WE. But now, the new folder on the external drive is behaving in the same screwy fashion as the old one. The new folder has a different name from the old one but the same problem has surfaced again. If I so much as click on the new folder, WE errors out and closes. Very strange. Makes me think there's something odd about one or more files. They copied just fine, though, and deleted ... Hi, today I got the "windows explore stopped working" problem on Vista system. I found the post of Joncotes in last year as below. But It doesn't work on me because although I repeated steps 1-3 many time the explorer still can not restarts. Is anyone can tell me what can I do now? Thanks so much!!!!

the The only goal here is to remove a trojan that installed itself on the computer. It can be accessed from the Add/Remove programs list, but the only problem is explorer keeps restating and you can’t open the windows fast enough without them automatically closing. This is an in-depth fix, read carefully:

1. Open Task Manager via Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
2. Click File > New Task (Run…)
3. Type “C:\Program Files” Press ENTER

Note: Since the explorer browser was accessed through Task Manager, it shouldn’t close every time Explorer restarts. If it does, repeat steps 1-3 until the window never closes after an Explorer restart.

4. Click the “Folders” link near the bottom of the left-hand colored pane.
5. Click Control Panel.
6. Click Program and Features.
7. Click the “Installed” tab so it sorts by installation date.
8. Notice the programs installed on the current day’s date! You need to uninstall these.
9. READ CAREFULLY!!!
10. When you click to remove one of these programs, windows will ask you to restart. DO NOT RESTART. Click “No”
11. If/When Windows prompts you telling you the uninstallation failed, click “Uninstall Using Recommended Settings”.

After updating yesterday, explorer.exe no longer starts correctly, either on startup or manually. A windows restore to before my latest updates fixes the problem, but installing the updates causes the problem again. I do want to keep the system up to date, so I figure I shouldn't just turn automatic updates off. Some notes:
I sit on the "Welcome" screen after logging in for longer than usual before getting to the desktop.
"Personalized Settings" seems to be what's causing the issue - this is the window that freezes.
I don't have a start bar.
Everything else works fine - I can launch programs through the command line or task manager, including windows explorer.
My wallpaper no longer loads - or, to be more precise, it's just a black color.
I have DisplayFusion installed, but I uninstalled it and this had no effect.
Here's a screenshot of the symptom along with my recent update history.

I'm not totally averse to reinstalling windows, but I do want to make sure the same thing doesn't just happen again. Anyone have ideas?

Ran Acronis True Image 2011 image backup last night and was set to auto shut down after image/verification completed.

This morning the screen still had Acronis running with the message "Program has stopped working". Closed Acronis and tried to reboot...but after two hours I still have the "closing" message on the screen:

"Operations are in progress. Please wait
The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete"

Relatively small Windows installation with maybe 50 gigs being used on disk.

Have tried the PC case restart button...but nothing happens ?

Should I turn the PC box on & off via the main switch on the back of the box ?

Thanks...TRinAZ

Answer:Program "stopped working" - Windows shutting down for over 2 hours ?

This message is caused by Acronis. If you left the default verification schedule set, it will verify what is set to verify before it shuts down. This could be quite a few backups.
I just let mine run and then made sure all defaults are set to not schedule verifications.

You could try to shutdown and reboot but I have not tried that.

I get 'windows host process rundll32 has stopped working' whenever I attempt to open Mouse in Control Panel to adjust mouse settings.
I'm on Vista.
I've tried: System Restore to previous updates - did not work
I've Turned off Data Execution Prevention (DEP)
I don't have lmpgvd.ax in Windows 32
I've done this whole this, but I don't have the program assioated with that. Open Computer > System Drive > Program files > Common Files > Ahead > DSfilter.
Rename "NeroVideoProc.ax" to say "1NeroVideoProc.ax"
Also rename "NeVideo.ax" to say "1NeVideo.ax"
Reboot.
I did this thing: If you get the error when opening folders that contain video files, try this and see if it helps:
Open Control Panel > Folder Options > Always show Icons, Never Thumbnails

Straight after I downloaded Netlimiter, I got all these problems. First the message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" kept looping but now it has stopped and only comes up when I try and open My Computer etc.

I can't access control panel as the taskbar is gone but when the taskbar was there I couldn't open it anyway as it just closed again.

I can access cmd through task manager.

Safe mode doesn't let me open control panel either.

Does anyone know how to create a new user account through cmd? Maybe this could solve my problem?

I don't think it's a virus as AVG didn't pick anything up and Netlimiter is known to be a good program.

Any help appreciated.

So I'm using my computer one day and then randomly in the middle of use this comes up-
A popup box saying "Windows explorer has stopped working" w/ cancel option
then another one saying "Windows exploring is restarting" w/ cancel option
Then any open Windows explorer windows and all desktop icons and the taskbar disappear for a second then come back. Then the process repeats again.

This happens every 2-3 seconds and loops continously. I can't open anything in explorer b/c it closes all explorer windows when it restarts, I have to go to safe mode to access my files. It's driving me insane

From looking online its not a rare problem but I've tried a lot of suggestions and none seem to work.
this is what I have tried:
-system restore from a date a month ago
-Turning User account control OFF
-Going to C:\Windows\System32 and deleting suspicious files
-Uninstalling suspicious files (WINDOWS WARNING or WINDOWS SAFETY ALERT) from programs and features in control panel
-Uninstalling programs thru C:\Program Files thru Task manager
-Deleting files on Desktop using command window
-using sfc / scannow thru cmd window>run as administrator. After I ran this scan it just says windows has found no integrity errors or something like that

Things that you may need to know-
- there is no problem when I use computer in safe mode
- whenever I restart computer there is a window that says "Windows cannot open this file ~TM68F3.tmp" (then asks m... Read more

This is my first post here. I have exhausted all other options and hope someone can give me some direction here. I'm running Vista and have had a recurrence lately when i try to open "my computer" I get the error message "windows explorer has stopped working and needs to restart", then it cycles and the second message appears " windows explorer is restarting", however I still am unable to open the folder. I have tried updating drivers, changing antivirus programs, checkdisk, i ran hijack this the log is below. I also started in safe mode and DO NOT have the problem in safe mode. Any ideas?

I attached the hijack this log seeing it won't allow me to paste it here, sats it has links in it.

Answer:"Windows Explorer has stopped working and needs to restart" in Vista,

Sounds like an infection (or a driver issue due to the fact you can access via Safe Mode). The best advice we can give you is to go to our Virus and Malware Removal forum.

Normally we would say to read the 8 step sticky and follow it step by step and when you go to post attach the required logs.

However, you can't access the internet on your possibly infected system. I would still post there and let them know of your issues. Either Bobbye or Broni or someone else will see your post and give excellent suggestions and help.

Make sure the tile of your post is solidly descriptive such as "Help: Can't Access Internet to Run 8 Steps" or some such thing.

Good luck.
