Network users cannot run shortcut items placed into All Users Desktop folder

Question: Network users cannot run shortcut items placed into All Users Desktop folder

Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All Users\Desktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All Users\Desktop work ok, just not any new ones!

The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.

Preferred Solution: Network users cannot run shortcut items placed into All Users Desktop folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I have two files: an ico file with the icon and a shortcut to an intranet page. How can i make sure that every user that logs on on that pc, will see the icon (with the url in it)?

Jvuz

Answer:shortcut on desktop for all users

You'll need to place both shortcuts in the Public desktop folder. Navigate to "C:\Users\Public\Desktop" (to see this folder, you'll need to unhide hidden files and folders first), then paste the shortcuts there.

Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

application data
D:PAI(D;OICI;FA;;;WD)(A;;0x1200a9;;;WD)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)S:AI

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Answer:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen.

User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work.

Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.

I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.

If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.

Anyone heard of this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

Logged into cmd prompt as admin.
Cannot see C:\users\all users with the following cmd's

Folder does not show in normal File Explorer window
Run TREE cmd and the All Users folder does not show.
Run DIR cmd for C:\users and All Users does not show
Run ATTRIB -s -h C:\users and still do not see All User folder appearing. Restart after running ATTRIB cmd, but does not trigger reload of folder.

BUT, when I
Run DIR cmd for "C:\users\all users" the folder and files show
Run ROBOCOPY and the All Users folder and its files transfer.

Somehow this folder has become hidden and I am unable to unhide or see it.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Unable to see folder C:\users\all users

Windows does not have a folder All users. It is a link to C:\ProgramData folder, in other words when you run command DIR "C:\Users\All Users", it lists the content of folder C:\ProgramData.

A co worker is looking for some kind of app or utility where he can share a folder on a network with everyone. The apps he came across all allow anyone to view the folder once somone logs in. He wants it so that only specified users can see it at any given time and no one else.

Basically what windows file sharing would do with permissions set for users but not using windows file sharing.
Is there anything that can do this.

I was thinking something like an htaccess file but we dont have a webserver setup.

Answer:Network accessable folder only for specific users

when you connect to the UNC mapping, use the name of the computer which you're using as a file server like a domain

Example: you're hosting the file on a computer named: "filesvr"

you would do like so:

Connect [drive letter] to \\filesvr\[share]
connect as different user
username: filesvr\username
password: password

Currently I am getting requests to allow off site users access to a company folder so that they can share files with a department within my organization. Does anyone have a suggestion of the best way to serve this folder(s) up? Would I just set them up with VPN access and then just give them permissions to that folder only? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Currently we are running SBS2003, BES, Win Server 2003, and a Sonicwall 4060 Pro.

thanks,
B

Answer:External Users Network Folder Access

Hamachi makes this really easy, but may not go over well in a corporate environment. They will probably want a "real" VPN.

Under Windows 2000, when I reformat the computer, I add administrator user as a network user in the install process. Then, I go in and add local users to the computer. Later on when I want to add network users, it won't let me, the computer just hangs. Any ideas?

Answer:Can't add network users after add local users

Not much information to go on here, but are you signed on as a network admin when you are trying to add the network users?

When you say you add the administrator user as a network user, what are you referring to? Are you adding the Network Administrator account to the local PC?

It only happens when one user creates a file or folder. If another user creates a file or folder, other users can open and modify it just fine.

Answer:XP: One User Creates File/Folder on Samba Network, Other Users Cannot Modify

I would guess it would be due to the fact the the first person has Admin Rights with in the account. The other users do not. So they would not have the rights to modify until it was granted. Might want to have this moved to the Linux Area since Samba is only used with Linux networks. Samba isnt necessary when only Windows is running on the machines.

Hello,

Trying to get remote desktop to work for our 2 desktops in the house (both Win 7).

Checked how online - went to Computer, turned on remote, turned on "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Auth..."

Then went to "select users".

the box there is empty and below that, it says "XXXX already has acccess" which is the user name on this PC i'm currently using.

I then hit 'Add'. Here's the issue.

When i see video tutorials, etc under locations they can find other names within their network (ie. 1 name for each pc on network, etc or that is what it appears like).

I can only see 'location' as this current PC. Not PC # 2. If i enter username in the Object box, OR the name of the other PC, it says it can't find it.

i'm sure i'm missing a step somewhere but not sure where.

Regards,

SS

Answer:Remote Desktop setup- 'Select users' not showing other PCs on network

Hi and welcome to SevenForums!

I'm guessing the videos showed computers part of a domain(business) network which means domain users. These are different to local users.

For a home setup when you connect with Remote Desktop you need to log on with an account on the remote computer, meaning a local account on the computer you want to connect to.

"Select users" means local users on that machine. That others connecting to it from another computer need to know the local password to.

I've got a mandatory profile using XP that has a read-only desktop, and the desktop items are retrieved via the domain controllers Mandatory$ share. I am trying to create a shortcut to 'My Computer' (since the default one is deletable), and the shortcut works for administrators, but not for standard users. Is there another shortcut, or do I need to edit some security settings?

The shortcut is 'explorer ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} '

Answer:Shortcut to 'My Computer' (for standard users)

Since this appears to be a company machine, then you need to contact your IT support with this problem.

If things are locked down, then you should NOT be able to delete the shortcut.

If you look in the Start Menu, there should be a link there also.

Working with XP Pro here.

I used to be pretty much the only user of my PC ... but I will have some guests around for awhile, so I would like to set up other user accts.

I want to be the only user that has access to ALL programs.(my user acct already has admin privileges). I just want the basics for anyone else.

Other than going thru a tedious cut-copy-paste, drag/drop project between the "All Users" folder & each users folder .....

Is there a simpler way to accomplish this ?.

Better yet ... is there a bigger picture so to speak, that I should be looking into, that would accomplish this & provide peace of mind in other areas as well, such as limit access to files & folders elsewhere ?.

Doing something in Administrative Tools perhaps ?.

I would think having Pro vs Home would offer some advantage in this situation, but I'm not sure(that's why I'm asking).

The easier the better ... even if it requires a 3rd party program

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Doc & Settings - Users & Start Menu Items

I don't have XP pro but with what I know you can:
Create a limited account
Turn off its write permissions to folders like WINDOWS and Program Files and read permissions to other users.
Open Start menu folder and delete shortcuts
And to stop them changing system settings log onto that account and lock it up with Group Policy Editor - Start->Run->gpedit.msc (wish I had that in home edition lol)
Tweak it all to your liking.

Be careful not to change system wide restrictions in the group policy editor.

Hello

1.) How can the Media Player pinned shortcut on the taskbar be removed for All Users?

2.) In general, how can application shortcuts be pinned to the taskbar for All Users?

I reviewed the excellent REG files posted that would allow taskbar pinned applications to be added or removed for the current user or all users but those solutions seem to only apply to the win 7 OS system level application shortcuts.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Adding pinned items to taskbar for All Users

You'll have to do it manually for each user account.

I'm configuring Windows 7 Enterprise for my office. I've gone through and installed all the programs. I then do the deal where I log in locally and copy my profile and make it the Default profile.

Anyway, when I log in using my profile (Domain Admin) no problems!
When i log in as a typical user (without admin rights) I don't see anything on the left side of the start menu (recent programs). I open Word, Excel, etc. but nothing is ever added to the recent\favorite program list.

I'm guessing it's a permissions issue but I can't seem to figure it out. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

Have a look at the answer given by Compumech on page 1 of this link :

According to the replier, the key is to cut the programs down to 70.
Apparently it works for a few users in that thread. Please continue reading past page 1.

Hi,

I recently upgraded windows 7 onto both my laptop and desktop PC's. Initially, when I viewed the network tab in explorer, it used to bring up a list of my computers, of which I could then pick one, expand the list and see the corresponsing drives attached.

Today, I (stupidly) set up a homegroup. deciding i didn't really need it, i then deleted it! however, now when i expand the computers under the network tab, i cannot see the drives anymore. i can only see a folder labelled "Users".

Does anyone have any idea how i can get it to revert to what it used to show?

many thanks,

mike

Answer:Unable to view network drive, only "users" folder

You will need to make sure that you officially "leave" the Homegroup to fix that particular problem. After that you will want to set up a Workgroup type of network.

Hi y'all,
I just got a new boss and am trying to get him set up with the warehouse delivery schedule but it's not working. I know it's possible because I got it done for my old boss, but darned if I can remember how!
I have the calendar, I've added the new boss to the permissions and given him editor rights. He can pull it up on his Outlook using the File|Open|Other Users Folder, but it doesn't 'stick'. Every time he wants to look at it he has to go through the same rig-a-ma-roo. I know that my old boss had it on the left side with his other shortcuts but I just cannot figure out how the heck we did that. Please tell me how I can get my shared calendar to 'stick' on my bosses shortcuts.

Also, as a test, he entered a new appointment, and though it showed up fine on his computer, when I looked for the appointment on mine there was nothing there. It's been several years since I set this up for the old boss, so it's quite likely I missed something along the way. Help?
Thank you in advance,
Ky

Furthermore, I'm sorry, but your explanation is very unclear for anybody unrelated to what you've done or the Boss has doen.
Sorry, maybe some extra explanation and a screenshot or two might help you get an answer or tip.

Hi all
I am wondering if it is possible to prevent users from creating shortcuts. We have users locked down were they cannot get to the local C: Drive to prevent the machine from getting messed up. But they are creating shortcuts that allow them to browse Active
Directory. "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe dsquery.dll,OpenQueryWindow" And while I cannot prevent them from reading AD, I want to prevent them from getting to the rundll32.exe file. At this point, they are creating shortcuts to get there. These
users cannot change anything in AD, I am just trying to prevent them from browsing it.
I would block the rundll32.exe file from being executed but with all the software we have, I am not sure what all it would break. Is it possible to prevent running specific rundll32 dll files?
Any advice in this matter would be great.

Good day forum!

I work IT for a college and we are gearing up to roll out Win 7 across campus. In our default local account which we use to build our images, we remove all of the recently opened programs and items from the start menu. This is one of the last things we do prior to using the sysprep profile copy. However, once all is complete, and we join the machine to the domain and login with a domain user account, the recently opened programs and items part of the start menu is cluttered again with Win default items, such as the snipping tool, and so forth. How can we keep this from happening?

Thanks!

Answer:Recently opened programs and items across domain users

you might try to right click on the start menu -> properties -> and uncheck the two boxes under privacy before you run sysprep.

Hello, I am hoping that someone might have a solution to this issue. I am currently running the following hardware/software:
Dell T5810 Workstation
Fresh install of Windows 10 Pro 64bit
With a specific Group Policy for Non-Administrators in place

I have searched the forums for quite some time now, but I have not found anyone that is experiencing the exact same issue that I am. I am currently using a Group Policy that supports the following:
"Remove pinned programs list from Start Menu" = DISABLED
"Remove common program groups from Start Menu" = DISABLED
"Remove frequent programs list from the Start Menu" = ENABLED
"Remove Default Programs link from the Start Menu" = ENABLED
"Remove pinned programs from the Taskbar" = DISABLED

Basically, I can pin items correctly to the Start Menu under the user if I add them to the Administrators user group, but when I attempt to log them back in as a Non-Administrators user (I manually remove them from the Administrators user group), all of the icons show up at login temporarily, but then disappear while I am physically looking at them. This ONLY occurs under Non-Administrative users, which I have to have in place due to security reasons.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. If absolutely necessary, I do have a recorded video of this occurring.

Thanks!

Is this by design, or is there a way we can have all the settings show on the new shortcut?

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. If your reading this, hope it helps you out buddy.

Answer:Half Life Blue Shift Problem for XP Users: Solution for Kaspersky users

I'd also like to add the game only works when I have Safari open. Absolutely no idea why, but this seems to be a requirement.

hi guys,

really need some help on this one cause i cant seem to get how something that sounds so simple is so hard to do.

i got a client with a workstation that has a local user account on it.
they also have a domain which he has another account on there.

so i have local account joe1 and domain account joe2. now i need to get joe 1 to combind and merge outlook and my docs with joe2. and then get joe2 to stay on the server so that it remains a account that can be accesses on any computer on the domain network. with this in mind the user profile needs to be saved on the server and the profile can be copied to the computer that his sitting at when he loggs on.

anyway i can figure out how to move the local (joe1) account to the server (joe2)i have tried a command moveuser but i keep getting a parameter error on there (error 87) .

i typed it like this

moveuser joe1 (company doamin)\joe2 /c:\\(client machine)

please can anyone help me one this

Answer:migrating local users on xp to domain users on a windows 2003 server.

prob best n easiest way to do it would be to FAST the local profile to the server then log in with the domain profile and FAST it back

I don't remember when, but I availed myself of the free Windows 10 upgrade sometime back. I was using 8.1 and I had, at some point, moved C:\Users and all its associated folders to E:. Everything has worked fine and Win10 didn't have a problem. I did notice that there was still a C:\Users, but the only folder it contains is Administrator.

This was probably not a good move to make. Moving data folders, like Pictures, Documents, etc., is fine, but moving the actual User Profiles was not such a good idea. My E: drive is no longer large enough to hold all my photos and other data. I bought a replacement drive large enough, but having my Users Profiles on E: is now a problem and I want to move them back to C:, only without the data folders.

I can delete all the existing data files from those default folders (I have backed them all up), so now I need to find a way to restore the Users folder and contents to C:. I've tried researching the problem, but found nothing that specifically applies to my situation. The TenForums article, "Relocating Users folder on an existing Windows installation" Seems to be as close as I can get. Unfortunately, this part has made me take pause and ask you all for help:

Answer:Restore Users Profiles back to C:\Users without data folders

Jim McClain said:

Do you know what I should do? Maybe Kari's still around and can reply? Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you used the Sysprep method to relocate the Users folder to E: drive, you can use the same method to relocate it back to C: drive. The warning you quoted is when doing this in a clean install, it does not apply when moving Users folder back to C: drive which will always be accepted and OK for Windows.

Follow these simple steps (looks more complicated than it in reality is!):

Create a new, temporary local user account, name it as you wish like "Dummy" or such (tutorial)Change Dummy's account type to administrator (tutorial)Sign out from all other user accounts, sign in to DummyDisable all other user accounts except Dummy, the one you are currently signed in (tutorial). No worries, accounts and their data will remain intact, deactivating (disabling) them temporarily is done because sometimes Sysprep causes existing user accounts to lose Start and Search / Cortana functionality. When we are ready we will again activate (enable) all old user accountsWhen done, open an elevated Notepad (right click and select Run as Administrator) copy the following code and paste it to a new text document]:

Code:

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users refers to a location that is unavailable *error message*

This is normal. All users folder points to c:\programdata folder. These are called symbolic links.

How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

All of my computers are wired... but, I would like to give my retired neighbor (he's 64 years old) wireless access. But, I don't want him or anyone else access to my shared files b/w desktop/laptop. So, should I put it on a different subnet? Do I need a 2nd router? Right now, I have the BEFSR41 with a WAP11 AP on 192.168.1.245 with the router on 192.168.1.1 (both are 255.255.255.0 subnet).

Thanks!

Answer:How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I would setup a DMZ, you can do this by using two physical routers or something like smooth wall with multiple nics. If I were you I would setup smooth wall on a crap old box and install 3 network cards into the old computer. Hooking your cable modem to one of the network cards in the smoothwall box will be like pluggin in your cable modem to the wan port on the back of your router. I would plug your wireless router into to the next nic on your smooth wall box. If your neighbor is the only one using the wireless do the following. Enable WEP, don't broadcast your ssid, filter by mac address, and limit the total number of connections to 1. That should keep your wireless rather secure. With the final network card in the smooth wall box attach either a standard switch or even another router. Smooth wall has built in DHCP support and it will allow you to set a range of ips.Hard wire all your home computer to the switch and your in business.

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Thanks Guys

Answer:Website printing??? (backgrounds causing problems with PC users but not Mac users)

I only have one suggestion. Do they have this unchecked?
Print background colors and images.

IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advance Tab-> scroll down
to the Printing headline. Make sure it is unchecked.

Hi All,
I've recently setup a clean install of Win10 onto a new system.
Prior to this I backed up my 'Users' folder from the old setup (also Win10) onto my d:\ drive, on a second HDD.
Now that the system is up and running, I've noticed that the backup 'Users' folder is being 'seen' by Win10 as a system folder, resulting in my inability to rename it etc.
Searching for a newly created document that is located in 'My documents' on c:\drive results in it being called up as existing in:
c:\users\neil\documents (where it actually lives)
d:\users\neil\my documents
d:\documents and settings\neil\documents

How best can I disassociate the d:\drive backup 'Users' folder from my system folders ?
Thanks for the assistance.

You mean you hide it? If that what happened, just change the folder view setting to show up the hidden folders.

If that isn't what happened, then elaborate the situation much more.

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

You might try the procedure's listed in the guide. This system seems to be pretty far gone. Interesting virus, a swing and a miss for AVG.

Having an extra drive with a recent system image + system restore procedure using DVD is the best method for fixing these problems.

Of course these days you need to keep that extra drive unplugged if you really want to keep it safe.

Hello All

Each time I install a new program and ask it to create a shortcut on the desktop it creates it under the public user account.

Is there a way to either disable the public user account or set the default that when a new program creates a desktop shortcut it creates it under my user name?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Default profile for desktop shortcut items

Welcome to Seven Forums bhavz. the Public desktop is the All users desktop. Do the programs give you the choice to install for all users, or just automatically dump the shortcut on the Public desktop? You might be able to make the Public desktop read only, but if you are installing as an administrator, it may not make a difference. A Guy

As Administrator, I?ve created my own folders for my documents. These are located in the D: partition of my hard drive; and they are shown in the Library section of the contents of the computer, on the left.
Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?
Thanks for any help.
ACA

Answer:Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Question: Users Folder

Hi everyone, this is my first post here, i hope it goes here
Well, thing is I'm that sort of user who likes his OS to be as clean, clear and minimalistic as possible.
Thus I like my comp to have only one download location, only 1 temp folder, etc.

Regarding users folder I don't know how windows works with these folders, because in every Windows OS I can recall, there have been always multiple folders, even if you set your computer to work with only one user that is you, the absolute and total administrator. Then you can see a default user, a "yourusername" folder, a public folder, an all user folder. Also when installing software sometimes they put their shortcuts into default, sometimes into all and sometimes just in yourusername user folder. Is it safe to delete all folders but the "yourusername" folder? if not, which are the folders you have to keep? Is there a way to make these folders to converge into one?

A thing i hate is installing software and not knowing where did it put archives into my computer. I usually check the program files folder, but have seen many times left over folders, some empty some not. Then again the users folder is a mystery to me as if it will keep files from a never used again software forever or not.

There is also a Program Data hidden folder.

Can anyone help me with this questions please?

Question: All Users folder

Answer:All Users folder

Hi Ronny,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not sure what the folders with the long numbers belong to. Since the All Users folder is a hidden system folder, you should be careful what you delete in it. You might run Disc Cleanup. If they are junk files, they should be included in Disc Cleanup to be removed. This would be a safer alternative.

Disk Cleanup

Hope this helps,

Answer:All Users folder in XP

Why do you have to go through it? Surely your own section is separate from All Users. Also this folder will contain information relevant to your account.Further to that software will add entries there to so delete it and it'll probably come back.

While I was searching for something, my C:/users folder disappeared.

So my desktop lost all its folders and some icons and shortcuts. And of course I had no 'Documents' folder, etc.

I then discovered that I had no System Restore points (I've created some now)...

I finally managed to work out that somehow 'show hidden filles and folders' had been un-ticked.

So I ticked that option, and now all the missing items are back - but they're all 'pale' and all the icons within those folders are 'pale' as well.

What does this mean? I can open the files and folders ok.

TIA

rob

Does the Users folder have to be relocated to an empty drive on an existing win 10 installation, or is any local drive ok?

Answer:Relocating Users Folder

If you are referring to the method told in this tutorial, the drive or partition used should not contain any Windows system files and folders from any previous install. Other than that it doesn't have to be empty although it is recommended.

Hello, I've recently installed windows 8 and during the installation I found out I already made a Microsoft account with my email.
That was no problem, it actually saved me time, so after the installation was finished and windows was set up I opened the windows explorer, where I found out my user folder (in C:/Users) was named sjoer_000. I found it a bit disturbing as it seems windows has made that name up so searched how to change the name (I didn't wanted to break something by changing it manually). The first thing I found didn't work. You had to navigate to the menu you get when you type "lusrmgr.msc" on the startscreen (I think you could access it by pressing win+x+g, then computer management, then system tools and then something like local users and groups). But I couldn't find it and after some searching again I found out it was for Windows 8 Pro only. Great, so that wasn't going to work. Another thing with regedit didn't work too probably because of the same reason; the standard versions lacks the feature.

So what I tried after that was creating a new user account with the good name (I think it was a local account) and then I lost my original account and tried restored it with some backup from WinTransfer, but cancelled it somewhere in the process. I also made a Microsoft account with a different email (it might have been the same email, I don't remember).

I did some other things, not sure what, and all that created a big mess. Now I finally have my normal... Read more

Also what do you mean by "forced upgrade"?

I am working on a friends machine, (Win10) and for some reason there is a Users folder on the desktop. It is not a copy nor a shortcut, and there is another Users folder in C/: User/User which is exactly the same.
As a test I deleted one picture out of the desktop/User/pictures folder on the desktop and it deleted the picture out of the C/: User/User/pictures folder. It appears that if I delete anything out of the desktop users folder it will also delete it out of the main users folder. The desktop folder exactly mimics the users folder on C:/ drive.
How do I get rid of the Desktop Users folder, as I am worried she will get into it and delete something? She likes an uncluttered desktop, and is liable to delete this folder. It was here when I got the computer and I don't know how she got it on the desktop.
I can find no way to move it, as Properties doesn't show up, either right clicking or in the ribbon. When I go into the desktop through users it does not appear in the desktop folder nor in the public or default section of the users/desktop, only on the screen desktop.

Picture of right click mouse on folder.

Picture of the opened User folder on the desktop.

Any help appreciated.

Yep. Profiles. Again. Just curious... what if I just dump the contents of what I would normally put in the default profile, but instead, to all users...

My only concern is all users is a little more out there and public than default is. Can I lock it somehow so you either need a password to change the contents, or at least make it hidden without screwing anything else up?

Answer:Is there a way I can set the All Users folder, and lock it?

By default only Administrators, Power Users and System have permission to change files in the All Users folder, I believe. Users have the ability to read and execute but not write.
I don't see why you couldn't make it hidden, then don't allow users to see hidden folders.
They can't really do anything to begin with though. On all my machines the All Users folder is there, nothing has ever happened.

I am looking at a client's Packard Bell desktop that suffered a Windows 8.1 crash, and now it won't boot. Automatic Repair doesn't fix it. The disk is partitioned into a Packard Bell logical partition, a Data logical partition, and a Recovery logical partition. Most of the folders on the Packard Bell partition are still there (Program Files and Program Files <x86> for example), but the Users folder isn't there, and the only folder in Windows is Logs, which doesn't contain any Windows information anyway! The only folders on Data are System Recovery Information and Recycle Bin. (The files aren't in the Recycle Bin either.) Ubuntu and TestDisk cannot see those folders either. Running a chkdsk after listing the drive letters from the Command Prompt in Windows 8 Recovery found and fixed some errors, but that didn't make a difference. I am running a virus scan using a boot disk, 2 viruses were found, but 454 errors were too, and now it is going through the healing process, the 'error' files it can't find (I think because it cannot find the files!) Taking the disk out and putting it into another system probably won't make any difference either. I have Googled it, but with no luck. Any clues?

Answer:Users folder disappeared

It looks like your only option is recovery software, both Piriform and EaseUS have decent programs but for a job this size you may have to buy a license.

I really thought the names of user accounts would be seen in the Users folder, but aside from the recognized "user accounts" of my own, Public, and Administrator, I have the following:

.NET v4.5
.NET v4.5 Classic
All Users
Default
Default User
Default.migrated
DefaultAppPool
TEMP
UpdatusUser

Yes, I am showing hidden folders here, but can I / should I blow away any of these? If I could at least justify a folder as being some form of system account such as maybe "All Users", but items such as the .NET accounts strike me as just plain weird.

I just built a new computer and have a 240g ssd as my c drive. I'm pleasantly surprised about how many apps along with wind 10 I've been able to install to it (I'm, as I type, downloading doom from steam on it), but I know I'll soon reach a limit.
Does anyone recommend a way to move the users folder to my conventional hd or not recommend moving it?

When I click into C: Drive>Users> I have Public and Phil. I presume that the Phil folder points to the folder with all the My Pictures etc in. But I cannot access it. It says it is a file and not a folder.

I checked on my mums computer as she has windows 7, and if i click into the users folder there, it shows hers up as a folder and can navigate through it fine.

I have on my desktop a folder that I can get to the My Pics etc but I would have thought that in the users folder, there would have been a folder the same.

Is it unusual to have a file in there instead of it being a folder?

Hope you all understand where i'm coming from.

Regards

Phil

Answer:Users Folder Problem?

Not sure what's going on , but do you have aWindows Explorer icon next to the Start Menu button on the Taskbar? That will take you to Libraries where you should find Music, Videos, etc.
Or, you should be able to get to them from the Start Menu itself.
