Dell Inspiron E1505 freezes when power is plugged/unplugged

Question: Dell Inspiron E1505 freezes when power is plugged/unplugged

Hi guys,

I've had this issue for some time now but no real resolution.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, latest updates, etc. on a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop.

Basically, and this is intermittent, but often enough to be a problem, when I remove the power cord (either from the wall/power supply, or remove the plug from the back of my laptop) the computer just freezes up:

- The screen goes completely black (although not as black as when the computer is completely off)

- the computer is still 'on' (though not responding), power light is still on, any lights that were already on (NUM LOCK, etc. are still lit up)

- the computer is frozen (I can't see the screen, but I can confirm this because for example if I press cap-locks or the key combo to disable the wireless networking, the lights on my keyboard stay the same)
The only way to recover is to force a shutdown and restart the laptop.

I have contacted Dell regarding this, but they said it's not a hardware problem, and most likely some kind of system conflict. Of course their advice (as always) is to re-install Windows.
I have confirmed that it appears to be a system problem, because I booted the laptop off a Linux live CD, and then tested multiple times to remove the power plug and I could never replicate the problem.
I'm trying to find a solution where I don't have to completely reformat and start over as I have a lot of programs installed.

Any advice would be appreciated. And if anyone else has a Dell laptop with this problem I'd be interested in hearing about this.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505 freezes when power is plugged/unplugged

Yes this would happen as it freezes when trying to switch power sources. Close the lid to force hibernate or shut it down before you unplus it. You should never just pull the cord out while Windows is running. It will always freeze.

how long have you had this laptop for, i think you need to replace the batter because it is getting old. as for the dark screen it does that so the laptop doesn't use soo much batter. in you laptop look for key that has fn written on it hold that and find another key with a start sign and a plus with it. hold fn and press the +start the screen will go brighter. what setting ahve you put for your batter some you can set to use full pc performance or normal so batter is saved etc.

I hope I am posting in the right section of the forum.

I have a Dell Inspiron e1505 notebook (laptop). it now won't power on!

I checked if my power adapter has a problem, but my power adapter works fine when connected to my friend's laptop.

When I switch on the power, the LED lamp on adapter is glowing green. As soon as I insert the adapter pin into my laptop, the LED turns off! And no LED on laptop would ever blink.

Can somebody please guide me? Thank you!

Answer:Dell Inspiron e1505 won't power on

Lots of folks are having trouble with the power socket for the adapter cable breaking loose from the board. Does your jack wiggle at all or otherwise feel loose?

Also, that Dell model has a lot of trouble with the inverter to the screen burning out. Everything will light up except the screen. A new inverter costs $5 to $9, but takes some work to install.

If you do not use Dropbox there is no reason to reinstall.Uninstall Dropbox by following the steps outlined in our Help Center article: When the uninstall finishes, please reboot your computer to ensure that it is complete.Delete the Dropbox metadata folder:Open a Windows File Explorer (not Internet Explorer).Type %LOCALAPPDATA% into the address bar (include the % percent signs).Delete the folder "Dropbox" from the results. If you cannot find a Dropbox folder inside %LOCALAPPDATA%, please go to %APPDATA% instead, and delete the Dropbox folder there. Please note that deleting the metadata folder will not delete the files in your Dropbox folder.Download and install the newest version of Dropbox by visiting the following website: Dropbox has finished installing, please apply any Selective Sync settings you may have had prior to the reinstall. The problem still exists even after Dell repaired the laptop. It took two weeks to get the repaired laptop back from Dell.

The problem is:
When I plug or unplug the charger while playing music/video on laptop, the laptop is freezing with buzzing sound for 1-2 seconds when the laptop begins charging. Even after Dell repaired the laptop, the problem still exists.
Tried installing the updated drivers, the laptop works fine only for a short period and then after some time the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.
Also, if the laptop is restarted it works fine for a while and then the same freezing with buzzing sound problem comes back.

Not satisfied with the Dell and Dell repair services.
Need help with this problem.

Hi!I have a brand new (like 2 month old) Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series and I've noticed a problem with it. If i turn on the laptop and it's not plugged in, it runs just fine. However, when it's already on and I plug it in to the power, the screen goes to black and after a few seconds it goes to sleep. After, I turn it on again and it works just fine. However, this issue has happened a couple of times before and I don't know what to do to stop it. HELP

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5040N AC adapter Lost Power once plugged into Laptop

Hi RAYB871,
Please check if there is any damage on the machine. Check if all the ports on the machine are fine or misaligned. Sometimes if the pins in the USB ports are touching each other, they are known to cause many issues on the machine.
Three components cause this issue, in this order:
Adapter - you have already tested another adapter, so ruled out.
DC Port - the port that holds the adapter in, might be shorted - you would need this part -
Motherboard - I would primarily suspect this part, if the dc port does not fix the issue, then it is the motherboard that has failed and needs to be replaced.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call -
Personally, I would suggest, you invest your money on a new machine than to repair this old machine. However, it is your discretion.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

My Dell Inspiron 15 does not start up when I power it on while it’s connected to the charger. The screen does not turn on and the laptop starts beeping.. 3 continuous beeps with a pause in between. Then, i turn off the charger and switch on the laptop on battery power, and it starts normally. Is it due to a faulty charger ? or is it due to a motherboard error?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 that I've upgraded with a T5600 Core 2 Duo CPU, a pair of PC5300 2gig SODIMMs and a 500 gig hard drive.

I downloaded the "media refresh" X17-59465.iso updated x64 ISO of Windows 7 and made a bootable USB stick to install it.

Partway through installing it popped an error about not having a driver. Restarted, it boots off the hard drive, gets to the Starting Services screen then pops another box saying it can't install Windows.

I know other people have installed x64 Win 7 on this exact model with a Core 2 Duo CPU upgrade so what's the trick to making it work? I also know it will use around 3.5gig of RAM.

Would going back to the 1.5gig of PC4200 that was in it get Win7 to complete its install?

Answer:x64 on a Dell Inspiron E1505.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install:

Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here. I would use a fresh ISO written with tool in Step 2 as yours is in question.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failu... Read more

When I press the power button on the computer the two green light "A" and " arrow" flash for 2 seconds and stops but the computer does not power up.
how can I solve this?

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505

Here is some info from a Dell Moderator in Dell's Inspiron forum:

If your system will not power on try some or all of the following.

>Remove the ac adapter and the battery for two minutes then reconnect the ac adapter and try powering the system up.

>Remove the ac adapter, the battery, and the harddrive then put the harddrive back in and try it on ac power only.

>Try starting the system without the harddrive in the system.

>Remove hardware components one at a time and see if the system will start after that.

If the system will not power up with a certain hardware component install then that component may be faulty.

If the system will not power on no matter what, then the processor or motherboard may be faulty.

I have an older Dell Inspiron E1505 lap top that when I close the lid the screen goes black. When I return and open it the screens still black and I have to turn it off and restart. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thank you for any help.

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505

It sounds like the button that the screen touches to turn off the display is stuck in the down position. It would be located close to where the display hinges are located. See if you can move it to the up position and have the display come on.

The hard fix would be to take the laptop apart and examine the button.

My sister's laptop was recently booting but the screen wouldn't turn on. This had happened before, and the problem usually took care of itself, so I plugged it into an external monitor. Upon booting, I had realized that the keyboard and touchpad (including buttons) also weren't working. Is there a reason that this was happening all of a sudden?

The front media buttons also stopped responding or glowing blue.

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505 Problem(s)

Check device manager and see if the drivers are missing or not. If there is a yellow exclamation then there's a problem with the drivers, and will need to be reinstalled.

Hi all, hope someone out there can help me with this problem.

Last year my girlfriend gave me her old Dell inspiron e1505 laptop to fix. I had my buddy test it and we figured the motherboard was the problem. After a few months (and wrong one, sent back original for repair....) I got the correct motherboard from eBay...refurbished from Dell, put it together and it's still not firing up. I get the battery light on and when I hit the power button the other three lights light for a second and then they go out and nothing happens. I don't hear any signs of life either.

Of course, needless to say I could buy another laptop but thats not the point. I need to figure out what's wrong with this one.....its about not letting it win.

Oh, and also my girlfriend came up behind me to console me (an attempt to keep me from crying) and I shot a static arc from somewhere on the computer (after it already wasn't booting up)....doesn't look like there was any damage and it's still behaving the same way with the three lights. I don't think this caused any damage.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hey guys, my friend just reformatted his hardrive on his Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP. We are both students in college right now and are having trouble getting the wireless network running on his computer. I know that the driver for the wireless internet card has to be re-installed, but I only have my Dell Resource CD for my E1705; he doesn't have the on that came with his. I tried installing a few of the internet card drivers on his computer from my CD, but none of them are picking up a wireless network. Are the drivers on his CD and my CD different? If they aren't, which driver am I supposed to be installing, because none of them seem to be working? If they are different, is there any place that I can find the driver necessary to run on his computer?
Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it.

I just had a chance to buy the basic edition of Windows 7 on the cheap, so I took advantage even though I'm not sure if it'll work on my Inspiron e1505, which is currently running XP. I checked the minimum requirements on the box, and figured I meet them all so I picked it up. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, and that seemed to confirm that I can run it. I have a 1.8 GHz processor and 1 GB of ram. The only issue is that my computer is not listed as a Windows 7 compatible system on Dell's website:

So who do I believe? Dell's website or the Windows 7 upgrade advisor?

Answer:Should I upgrade my Dell Inspiron e1505 to 7?

well if it was me i would would check to see if there is any drivers for 7 for your machine and if there are you will want to get more ram even thow windows 7 will run on 1gb be much better if you had 2gb. but i think you will be better off with xp on that machine.

My Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop was infected with "something" I say some thing because im not sure how to classify it. This thing had been hidding on my computer for several months it had enabled remote access to my computer, it was copying all my instant messages, it had uploaded all my song, videos (media), personal documents up to an online file storage location for someone else to view. When i would boot up my computer it would put me in a seperate shell, so who ever owned the "virus" could take control of my desktop with out me knowing. It replaced my AVG antivirus program with access to a colorfull java picture-show of AVG updating and scanning, but it was just an interactive image doing nothing. It/ or someone at this point went into my administrative tools section and replaced the links on the shortcuts to make them point away from windows system directory to files the placed on my hard drive, so i was unable to put my settings back to normal from there. it/they then altered my local security policy so that these settings could then only be changed, deleted remotely. All local access was restricted to view. The only discovery i made out of any of this that might help someone else before this thing gets to far, is that this thing seems to start off hidding itself as Adobe... Read more

All of a sudden this laptop stopped going to windows so I tried reinstalling the OS but it does not load, I tried another HDD but same deal, looking in the BIOS I am not seeing the HDD listed and running the onboard diagnostics, it shows the HDD test as "short test", my guess is it is not recognizing the HDD? Help please? BTW, Knoppix loads fine.

I have an Inspiron E1505 that is ~ 2 years old. It works fine when plugged in however once unplugged it doen't seem to switch over to battery power and will shut off with in 1-2 minutes after unplugging. When you double click on he AC power symbol in the task bar it doesn't recognize that a battery is in place. Dell doesn't seem to have a clue or atleast that's how they are acting.

I'm a new member and a computer dinosaur who cut his teeth on the now ancient
DEC PDP11 and VAX series computers. That was back when 16k core required three boards to function (about the same room as the complete inside chassis of todays tower). Oh yeh, we actually repaired these monsters to componet level. You know, transistors, diodes, capacitors, inductors,.....etc.

technology overran me and I now need help whith my wifes DELL Inspiron 1505.

Tried to load drivers for a new HP printer, scanner, fax and had trouble getting it to take. Tried again and still no good. It seemed to go forever. After awhile I rebooted and got a stop0x00000024) message indicated a bunch of hex addresses. Tried to boot up stand alone but the same stop message appeared again.

Tried to boot (BIOS)and check drive bootup sequence, but it required me to put in a password or admin. Is there a default password for thyis? I do not recall ever setting one? Any suggestions??

Hi i am soon going to purchase a dell inspiron e1505 from my friend. However i am still trying to figure out what kind of video card the laptop has! I have checked several different sources, including the BIOS of the computer itself, vista device manager, and the ati radeon program installed on the laptop. I have gotten extremely conflicting results! the BIOS says 128mb, the ati radeon program says 256mb and the vista device manager says something weird like 841mb. I am going to ignore the device manager because it makes no sense. What i have determined is that it seems that its 128mb but theres some sort of hypermemory which seems to make it 256mb, could someone please help me to understand how hypermemory works, and what i really want to know is, will i be able to install a game that requires 256mb, or is the extra 128mb the hypermemory adds simply overclocking it. I anxiously awaiting your answers.

Thanks guys-Brendan

I have had my dell inspiron e1505 for about 4 years now. I have gone through two batteries, but actually currently have the original battery back in my computer because it lasted longer than the replacement.
However, my computer will no longer charge the battery....

My friend has the exact same computer so I have done a few tests...
For help in communication here is some annotation:

My computer:
computer A
Power cord A
Battery A

computer B
Power cord B
Battery B

I put my battery A in her computer B...and her computer B charged my battery A with her power cord B, but not with my power cord A.

I tried to use her power cord B on my computer A, but my battery A still would not charge...

I put her battery B, into my computer A, but it would not charge with EITHER power cord A or B....

So...I think I have come to a conclusion that something is broke inside my computer....
Is there something on the motherboard that chatges that battery?
Or, could it possibly be something easier to fix...
I am a student studying abroad in Rome right now, and computer parts aren't really readily available....

My dell e1505 laptop, which I've had for a little over 2.5 years, won't start up. I turn it on, and it loads past the screen that says "PBR 2... Done" and then the screen with a gray loading bar at the bottom appears. The bar fills up about 1/4 of the way, then the laptop freezes.
It doesn't budge after that until I turn it off, and when I turn it back on, it does the same thing. I don't want to have to reformat, I don't even know if reformatting would help, but I'm lost at this point.
Any help would be nice. Thanks.

Hello. I have been having problems with my laptop keyboard (Dell Inspiron E1505).
Periodically the keys b,n, /, space bar, and 3 of 4 arrow keys stop working. Initially I thought the problem must be an obstruction or due to the keyboard, so I replaced the keyboard with a new one. The same problems occur, with the same keys. I have removed the keyboard a few times to check the connection of the keyboard to the laptop, but it has not improved.
From there, I looked around for other possibilities. I scanned my computer for any malware, viruses, etc with Ad-Aware, McAfee, Norton, but have not found anything. I tried to update the driver for the keyboard, but it is up to date. Is there anything else from software, windows, etc that could be causing the problem or is it due to hardware?
Thank you

Answer:Keyboard problems on Dell Inspiron E1505

Luckily, keyboards are cheap (er)... We have seen a number of problems with 1505 and related keyboards. Replacements are available on eBay for $14 to $26 with free shipping. They do go bad on nearly all laptops, but the 1505 has had a higher record of failure than most Dell laptops.

How would I go about figuring out how to make my mouse pad on my laptop scroll with the use of my finger on the right side of the little pad like it always did. I used to be able to restart and it would work again but this is not working now. Recently had to get a new hard drive is there some kind of software that allows this function?

Answer:Question about mousepad on dell inspiron e1505

There should be software that supports this feature for your laptop, you should be able to find the driver from them. Here is the link to the Dell Site.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,

Hope somebody can help me out with this. I have had malware/spyware problems before and been able to treat them. Today, I had the traditional "your system is infected" popups, attempting to get me to click thru and buy something, even with AVG and Ad-Aware running in the background, but that's another gripe for another day.

Anyway, I shut down to reboot in safe mode to attempt to fix - and now I cannot reboot. The "DELL" screen comes up, and then the screen goes black. Its getting power, the hard drive is spinning, but it will not boot - in regular mode or safe mode.

I've read some things about flashing LED codes online, by LED's aren't flashing - only the power light and number lock light are lit. It doesn't try to boot and then shut down, it stops booting and stays on. I have reseated the memory, tried to boot with just the power chord in with no battery and I have nothing else plugged in.
I know its old (had it since 2006) and part of me thinks it may just be its time, but i also don't want to assume that since there was the virus popup right before hand. Would love to try to squeeze another year or so out of it!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505 will not boot - possible malware cause?

Do you have, or have access to a retail copy of a XP installation CD? This will need to be the same version as the one install on your computer. If not, try the following.Download NTBR_CD.exe and create a bootable CD. * Save the file to your Desktop and double-click it. This will create a folder named NTBR_CD. * Open the folder and locate BurnItCD. Launch it by double-clicking it. * When BurnCDCC opens, click Start - the CD tray will open. * Insert blank CD and click OK. * The tray will close, burn the image then eject the disk.Run chkdsk. * Boot the affected computer with the new CD. (You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM is the first device in the boot order.) * Once presented with the boot screen please hit <ENTER> to boot from CD. * After a warning screen there is a keyboard language options screen - press <ENTER> to leave it at EN-US. You should now be at the Tool options screen. * Type 5 and press <ENTER> to go to a command prompt. At the command prompt type the following bolded command then press <ENTER> tools\ntfs4dos\chkdsk You will be prompted (in German) to press Enter. * Press <ENTER> to start the check disk utility. Check Disk will check all attached drives and attempt to correct any errors. Please make a note of any errors found or corrections made. * When it completes type "menu" and press <ENTER> to return to the tools menu. * Type 6 and press <ENTER> ... Read more

I have an old dell inspiron 1505. I've had to restore it to factory settings numerous times and I was trying again. It gets so slow after about 3 months. So every 3 months I have to restore it. Anyways, I do the whole ctrl, F11 thing when it starts up. It goes to the system restore page but when I click to the the restore it starts for about 1 minute then says there's an error with the System Restore. If I just try startin up the computer it says there's an error and to press alt, ctrl, del, to restart. That still doesnt work. How do I get it completely restored?

I've tried live chats and no one will answer my question. They just ignore me. It's my school computer and I need it fixed ASAP.

Need help! I had to reformat my Dell Inspiron E1505. I found the drivers on the Dell support site and their recommended order for installation. How do I know which drivers are for my computer? There are 64 drivers total. I tried installing all of them which made a real mess, so I reformatted again rather than dealing with it. I'm back to a clean slate. What do I do???

Answer:Which drivers do I use after reformatting Dell Inspiron E1505

You haven't told us which OS you're using. The first one I would download is the "Chipset Driver". Use the Intel mobile one. You can always enter in the service tag number on the bottom of the laptop to find out what is supposed to be in that particular unit.

Answer:is dell inspiron e1505 compatible with windows 7?

Hi there,
You'd be surprised at the amount of systems that can run Windows 7 now.
Dell's support website does not have any drivers listed, but you can run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to get a good idea.
If you're not using any MS specific applications (Office etc.) then you could always move to Ubuntu which is great for web browsing and basic computer tasks. It also uses very little resource when compared to Windows.

My Dell Inspiron E1505 has been running incredibly slow for the past few weeks. It seems to have been slowly deteriorating for several months now, but in recent weeks has gotten worse and worse. I've followed all of the instructions in the "READ & RUN ME FIRST" thread, but no malware was found (other than a few tracking cookies which have been deleted). A friend had recently installed Norton for me, which I uninstalled after hearing bad things about it - it seemed to coincide with the timing of when the laptop started getting worse. I recently got the "blue screen of death" also.

Right now I have AVG8 installed, but I've been told that it's resource hungry. I really haven't a clue exactly what is making the machine run so slowly. Since i work from home, it's really important that I have my laptop working well. Please, please, please help!

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505 running slowly

I do try to keep up with the procedures listed in the Basic Comp Maintenance on a fairly regular basis. As for Norton, I did use the official uninstall tool, but I've only used it once. I'll run it again after I post this.

When I tried to uninstall AVG8, I got this error message:

Uninstall failed!
1 error occurred. Click Details to show more information.

If the problems continue please contact the technical support [email protected]

When I pressed the "Details" button, it showed this message:

Local machine: installation failed
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005

I'm about to run the Norton official uninstall again and then reboot.

Hi, I am hoping you guys(or gals)can offer some help.
My laptop is not even 2 years old (Dell Inspiron e1505)
I went to turn it on, and it would not start up.
Instead, it would power on and the screen would say black.
The fan would come on the power light would come on. Also,
the number lock and scroll lock lights would blink, and the caps lock
light was solid. I could hear the hard drive thinking about starting up.
This would last about 30 seconds, and then it would power off.
I read around the internet and found a solution, which was to
"reseat the memory". I took the bottom access panel off the memory
and took the chips out of the A and B slots. I then put them back in
securely and made sure they were in. IT SEEMED to work, when i turned
it on, the lights were no longer blinking. It started to power up (but the screen was still black) and it powers on for about 7 seconds and then just dies.
Please help if you can, I cannot afford a new computer and hope there is a simple solution. Thank you so much - Nick

1) HellRell. Stop spamming please. Posting more than once with the SAME thing in the post content is unacceptable... especially 3 times... in a row...

2) You said it worked for a moment after you reseated the RAM. This may suggest that there is a RAM failure. Try replacing your RAM. That's the simplest possible solution from what you've said here, that may work.

3) It sounds like you might have hit the typical DELL defect in well... just about everything... After about 2 years, the computer stops working and does something like that... I believe this is a dell conspiracy to get you to buy another one, however that might just be my opinion/superstition.

just a few hours ago, a small pot of water spilled directly to my old-ish laptop, and it shut down instantly. I unscrewed the bottom and propped up a fan next to the exposed inside, and now the computer turns on again!
However, the screen does not. Whenever I turn it back off, it does so instantly. The same exactly thing happened to this poor laptop 3 years ago, when a quarter-cup of soda entered through the keyboard. Last summer, it worked again!
But, not as much liquid entered the laptop, so I`m sure the damage isn`t as severe. Plus, the computer still turns on, so I`m not completely hopeless.

I don`t want to spend a bunch of money sending it to GeekSquad or Dell, or wait a long time so it can dry off or whatever. Can anybody tell me what to do to get the monitor working again?

A few days back a thick pink band started appearing on my dell lcd. This caused my pictures to appear bad, but i was still using the laptop. A few days later the laptop screen started displaying poor artifacts, flickering and blanked out after a while. All through when connected to an external montor the display was perfect.

Today i replaced the LCD, inverter and video cable with those i pulled from another working inspiron e1505 (my friend's).

While the pink band is gone on my e1505, the poor display artifact, flicker and blanking out continues.

hi my e1505 wont turn on when i press the power button, no sound...nothing. Preceding this was an accident where orange juice was spilled on the bed where the e1505 was sitting but i think it only crept in where the cpu radiator vents are, so i opened it up thoroughly cleaned everything on the top and bottom of the mobo with rubbing alc and put it all back together and pushed power and no go. although its sounds like a mobo issue i have a sneaking suspicion its the tiny little board that holds the actual power button because in the past(before the orange juice) i would have this problem where it wouldn't do anything and that was eventually solved by pushing really really hard down on the power button, so i feel like it could be that the little power board's connections are weak or the power board itself is fried.

any thoughts?

The power board or motherboard could be damaged or shorted by the orange juice or by static electricity... when you disassembled the laptop

Hi guys,

I have a laptop I'm working on that will not turn on/ charge. I've tried a different adapter to no avail. I've also taken a battery from an equally rated Dell Inspiron (different model) laptop and it does not turn on with that either.

I've replaced the charging component off a motherboard before but this one is different as it is not simply a connector that goes from the charging outlet and plugs into the motherboard somewhere. It is just a piece that is soldered on and I can't tell what route it's taking.

I've tested the charger using a multimeter and it outputs ~ 19.5v so it should be fine. Any ideas?

EDIT: After doing some research online, I found that the center pin of the charger 'port' (on motherboard) sometimes goes in. Has anyone replaced one of these? If so, do you just unsolder it and solder in the new one? Someone mentioned putting some solder in the center and that fixes it?

Answer:Solved: Dell Inspiron E1505 Won't Charge / Turn on

Does anything at all happen when you try to power it up, any lights flashing or sounds ?

If it doesn't work with a charged up battery there is a hardware problem inside the laptop.
If it was just the power socket it should still work from battery power.

I would try charging the problem laptop's battery in the other laptop then try it in the problem laptop.

I recently installed my WIndows XP home edition with service pack 2 to my laptop and some of the drivers for my dell inspiron e1505 are missing. I tried going to the dell website to install the drivers and the application file could not be read (EXE files). The only reason i reformatted my computer because i started receiving messages like 'application could not be read by win32'. Unable to verify windows xp w/o internet access. The missing drivers are(under other drivers): ethernet controller, pci driver, base system device X3, network controller, SM Bus controller, Video Controller, Video controller (vga compatible). I already tried connecting my ethernet cord directly to the cable modem and it still doesn't work. Usually people that visit just have to connect their internet cord to access the internet. Yeah it sounds exactly like you're drivers are missing. You can double check by right clicking my computer > manage > device manager, you will probably see a bunch of question marks/exclamation points.

If you go to the Dell site, you should be able to download a single driver for the ethernet controller. Try this link:
Go to Network and look for "broadcom driver for 10/100 integrated controller". Don't click add to list, just click the download link. Save it to your desktop, then transfer it via usb and install it on the Dell. Reboot and then plug in your ethernet cable, hopefully you can get online. If that works you can install all Windows updates, then go back to the link and add all your drivers to the list and download easier with dell driver download manager.

hi there,
my computer, hp dv3 2221-tx, freezes whenever i plug or unplug the power. its the first time i came across with this kind of situation.
OS: win7 Ultimate 64 bits.

and i guess my charger is working fine, because when i had win7 Home in same laptop, i never came across this kind of situation.

thanks in advance,
with best regards,

Answer:Computer freezes when charger is plugged or unplugged.

is this happening only after you upgraded to windows 7? if so maby have a look at the manufaturers website for a power utility maby? Also i'd recommend checking your charger with a multimeter to check its giving the correct output.

It sounds more like hardware rather than a software issue but checkout what I said first n let me know how you get on.

I was recently given a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop with windows XP Media Center Edition as a gift. I am very grateful for the gift as a single mother of two in college. The only problem is, that this computer has been a problem since the first time I turned it on. It constantly had to suddenly shut windows down and kept telling me to run CHKDSK/F and restart. It never would work till today. After the computer restarted now every time I try to turn it on it first goes to a boot menu asking to start in safe mode, a few others and start windows normally, and then no matter what I choose the entire screen goes blue and says "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer." and some more about disabling antivirus and back up utilities and to run CHKDSK/F but the screen never changes and I can't do anything. I am hoping this can be fixed, even though the computer has been a pain, I have to have it for school and will be devastated without it. If someone out there can help me fix my computer I will be so grateful.

My husband's Dell laptop has been having crash problems intermittently for the past few months, usually while using the latest Firefox (not surprising because web browsing is mostly what he uses the laptop for), but he believes it stems back to a Windows update -- not sure which one exactly, but whichever one gave him the new IE with tabs. The computer has been twitchy ever since then.

Last week things progressed to Windows not starting up at all and consistently bringing up a BSoD upon every restart - Normal, Safe Mode, and Last Known Good Configuration.

In the BSoD, there is not a specific file or driver listed as the problem. Here is the STOP error code we consistently see:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x86F59E7A, 0xF79907B8, 0xF79904B4)
(I can transcribe the entire blue screen text if that is necessary)

I tried to use the Dell support site to troubleshoot the problem -- I followed the "guided path" tech support, trying each recommended step, none of which did anything. I stopped when I got to the suggestion to open the laptop and unplug all the third-party devices plugged into the motherboard. Knowing me, I'd get electrocuted. And we didn't alter the hardware once we got it from the factory anyway.

I ran Diagnostics and the memory passed all the tests. On the Dell "Windows XP Blue Screen Troubleshooting" page, it suggests updating the BIOS or rolling back any updates. I have no idea how to do any of those things when Windows won't ... Read more

Ive had a Dell Inspiron E1505 for about 4 years now.

-Windows XP Home SP3
-Genuine Intel CPU T2400 @ 1.83 ghz - x2 (Centrino Duo)
-1 GB of RAM

I've never had any problems with my cd drive until today when I was ripping a burnt cd. When the cd had 3 songs left to rip it stopped and wouldn't rip no more (the cd was pretty scratched), so I tried to rip just the last 3 songs ( 3 attempts, 1 for each song) with no luck. I ejected the disc and put in a different one (non burnt) and the audio was jumpy and skipping. I tried other cds since then and they all have jumpy and skipping audio, I tried a dvd and the audio was the same way (the video was affected a little if any at all).

Although, I have a video game already installed on my computer (which takes the game disc to play), and I put in the game disc and the audio was just fine, it loaded up and I played it for minute.
I CAN play audio from the harddrive and the internet and it sounds just fine.
I CAN still rip cds with windows media player, and when I play them back it sounds just fine.
I have nottried to burn anything yet.

ALSO, the light on my cd drive's door flashes (maybe insync with the skipping audio, kinda seems like it).

I read a similiar thread on here(but different!) and someone said to look in device manager under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers", then go to it's properties, then go to advanced tab and change it to DMA, bu... Read more

Hello, my name is Kim. I've had to seek help (concerning this same laptop) from your site before and was so happy with it, Im seeking your help once again!  It's concerning this same laptop as before...a Dell Inspiron E1505, with  Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, as the OS. The issue is that it's running VERY starts up slow and once started, loads pages S L O W!  Very frustrating, because until fairly recently, it seemed to be just fine. I have AVG 2015 free edition, as the anti-virus and have run a full scan on it, with zero negative threats to post.  I also downloaded Spybot - Search & Destroy and have also run a full scan and turned up 77 (I think) threats, which were 'fixed' & quarantined. It still seems to be very slow. However I did just check to see how much disk space is free, and was surprised to find that only 2.87 GB free, of 111 GB. Would that be the reason why it's so slow? Any help you can offer, would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Answer:Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop very slow to load pages, etc.

Do you see the problem in safemode with networking? Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post. Download SecurityCheck.exe from Here. Run SecurityCheck and follow the instruction from inside the code box.. When the scan is finished, a notepad will automatically open as check.txt   Please copy and paste the contents here on your next reply. Download MiniToolBox and run the program. SelectList Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

I have had a Dell E1505 for about 2 years. It has a persistent problem that I can't seem to solve. Often, but not always, it freezes when any kind of disc is inserted into the CD/DVD drive. There is no blue screen but the mouse cursor and everything comes to a complete stop. If there happens to be sound playing it will freeze on whatever tone is playing. The only way out is a hard re-boot. It is often, but not always, necessary to re-boot 3 or 4 times to get it going again. After that it may work for 3 or more disc insertions before doing it all over again. It doesn't usually freeze up unless a disc is inserted. (Well, no more than any Windows machine does anyway)

I've tried new firmware etc... with no change.

Thanks for your help!

With my laptop (Windows 7), can I set the computer to use different power plans when plugged in and when unplugged? I want to run the speedy power plan when plugged in and the battery saver power plan when unplugged. Thanks!

Answer:Different Power Plans for Plugged In and Unplugged?

You can change a plans settings for plugged in and on battery, which is much simpler. Click the battery icon, click adjust screen brightness, then click change plan settings then change advanced plan settings. Their will be an entry for both plugged in and on battery. You make the computer act exactly how you want for both without having to change power plans.

I am totally stumped by this one. My laptop makes this click sound at about 70% battery power (no AC) and shuts down (actually goes completely black). There is no warning and it does not go into hibernation mode. I bought an after market battery from the same vendor which I bought my previous battery. I have a battery monitor software (Battery Mon) that shows the battery is performing well. I have had my Dell since 2006 and this is my 3rd battery. I still have the original Dell battery which can hold a charge for about 1/2 hour. The battery mon program shows it can not hold a charge.

I am running Windows XP pro.

On AC power, laptop works great with no issues. Any ideas or suggestions? I have to travel and I can't have my laptop die out on me. Thanks

I have a Dell E1505 laptop that I suspect has a dead motherboard. I don't want to drop ~$200 to purchase a new one without some more confirmation.

When the system is powered up the three locks LED's light up for about 5 seconds along with the power LED then everything just turns off. The system fan does not turn on and the hard drive does not spin. I have gone through checking the power supply and battery. I get the same problem whether the unit is plugged in or is running off of the battery. When the unit is plugged in the battery charging LED does light up and does not go off. I have reseated the HD and RAM. I have tried other RAM chips in the unit and still the same response. I was having problems finding any information error codes pertaining to this series of LED's. The conclusion I have come to is a bad motherboard. In the past I have seen this problem related to the system doing nothing when turned on.

Can anyone shed some more light on this issue or at least confirm that they have had similar issues and it was related to a motherboard problem?

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Hi and thanks for the opportunity to post!

Have a Dell E1505 with a cracked LCD WSXGA+ screen. It still worked but it was getting worse, so I ordered a new screen with the inverter (same res).

While waiting for the new one to arrive, I hooked up the laptop to my HDTV set to do a little work plugged in thru the external connector (what the heck, I thought...the computer part still worked fine!).

Upon receiving the screen today, I plugged everything in, fired it up and no power to the screen. I even bought a new flat cable...neither that one nor the old one makes a difference.

The laptop is still putting out on the HDTV fine. When I hit function+F8 to toggle the display (which I have used fine for years), the message that "no external monitor is available" or something to that effect. The laptop thinks that the external HDTV is the primary default monitor.

When I go into my ATI Graphics X1400 card utility, I attempt to enable the secondary monitor. It flickers, then reverts back to the HDTV monitor as my "default". I noticed in the display settings that my HDTV monitor is checked as the default monitor and because it is shaded - I can't uncheck it.

I have no idea what to do next minus taking it into a laptop repair shop and paying LOTS of money not to mention being without it for 4-5 days!!!

Question is: Why does it think that the HDTV external monitor is the external monitor? How can I change it????

I appreciate any suggestions!!!

Hey all,I am troubleshooting some issues on a ThinkPad P70 with Windows 7 Professional and have come across an odd one. When unplugging or plugging the computer in to power, sometimes the CD tray will eject on its own. Didn't realize the laptop was unplugged and went completely dead sitting there for a month. Went to plug in to power up and nothing. Thought maybe cat chewed on charger cable and tested it and was only pulling 4v vs the 20v it's supposed to but tried new charger that Lenovo sent and still nothing. I've heard battery could be un-chargeable if left to completely die and sit for a while but still don't get why laptop won't boot up when plugged in.  Am I dealing with something else internal in addition to a dead battery?

Hello, I currently have Dell Inspiron 7567 and I had this for 10days.
Here is the spec of Dell 7567 that I have:
-Intel Core i7 7700HQ
-Nvidia gtx 1050ti
-16gb ram
-128gb SSD and 1tb HDD
-1920*1080 IPS panel
Whenever I play any games with AC adapter plugged in, the FPS is more than 100 and it makes loud fan noise. However, the FPS drops to 30FPS and fan does not make loud noise when I unplug the AC adapter. I have changed the NVIDIA power plans in NVIDIA Control Panel. I have also altered my power options in control panel and turned off Battery Boost in GeForceExperience. Can anyone please tell me what is causing this FPS drop and loud fan noise?

Answer:DELL INSPIRON 7567 FPS drop when unplugged

The system switches to lower power mode on battery - while you can adjust this setting in power management, it will reduce the battery runtime (and it's unlikely the battery can supply enough power to allow the system to run as fast as on AC power even if you max out the settings).
When the system is working hard, it generates heat that must be dissipated.  That causes the fan to run faster -- and be noisier as a result, just as your car's engine gets louder when revved faster.

Inspiron 17R won't start.  Only the first light turns on and of when I power up without the battery and Plugged power.
The power light goes on for a second and the first light on the top right blinks for a second with the power light and that's it.  If I hold the power button for longer, it keeps repeating the same.
Please help.

Answer:Inspiron 17R won't start. Only the first light turns on and of when I power up without the battery and Plugged power.

Unplug the system, remove or disconnect the battery, and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove the base cover and memory modules;  reinstall both.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will but won't with the battery, the battery is faulty.
If it still won't power up  after the foregoing, the mainboard is bad.

My home laptop computer (I say home because it is mostly used by my more-technology-challenged-than-me wife and my 3 1/2 year old son) will not boot up. I get a message that says "PBR 2...failed" right after the Dell splash screen.

Nothing else happens after that.

I am using a Dell Inspiron E1505 running Windows XP. The battery is dead (like all Dell E1505 batteries after one year), but other than that, it has been working fine.

The last thing I installed was a browser toolbar from UPromise (a 529 shopping rewards organization). The computer worked fine for at least a few days after that install.

I have tried using what I believe is the boot CD. It went through some processing - probably took about 30-45 minutes - started to boot up again, then failed with the same message.

Answer:Can't get my laptop to boot up, Dell Inspiron E1505 stops after "PBR 2...failed" msg

I ran the Diagnostics (after hitting F12 for BIOS) and it stopped at --Start DST Short Test-- Test Results: Fail Error Code: 1000-0146 Msg: Unit 0:DST Log contains previous error(s)

It then asks if I want to continue testing.

I did and got a separate error:

1000-0141 - No hard drive detected

Any help would be appreciated.

So Dell made a really terrible decision.  They have a transparent strip in the power button for an LED light to indicate if the power is on.  A power indicator is a given in any laptop, no matter how cheap it is.  However, Dell in all of it's genius decided to not include an LED bulb on laptops up to the Inspiron 7000 Series, despite leaving a transparent slot for it.  Seriously, what happened to this brand?!?  Do children make these laptops now?
I want to fix this, as my laptop is no longer returnable and a power indicator is absolutely necessary.  So the only thing I can think of is replacing it with one from the 7000 Series somehow (with some help probably).
This is a Dell Inspiron 5559.  I also have an Inspiron 5547.  Not sure which exact 7000 model I should get the part for...
Are they compatible?
Is there an easier way? Like how Fn+H turns on the hard drive indicator?

Answer:Can I replace a Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series power board with a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series power board?

The systems use different case and mainboard designs -- and may even be made by different companies.  The answer in all likelihood is no.
I don't think Apple has produced a Macbook with a power indicator -- the PC vendors are playing follow Apple.

Hi, I am posting this question with the idea that this could be 1 of 2 or 3 things, the DC power jack and Windows 7, or a combination of, and would like to know how they are effected individually or in combination in fine detail, and how to fix this issue of freezing, and I can help by giving you back your needed log information on reply. It ONLY FREEZES because of UNPLUGGING. It never freezes for any other reason but this. The obvious is that the yellow DC power jack wiggles, and the adapter sometimes slides out because of simply moving the laptop on a bed or something. It just pops out. It does not lose connection while plugged in though. It's not that sensitive of a problem. One day I unplugged my power supply while I was listening to music. The music froze in garbled pause motion, and the screen froze also. I have experienced this a few dozen times after the fact, and it is an intermittent problem; It doesn't take the first unplug to freeze it, it may be the 5th or 10th time, or that it's been sitting for a few hours and freezes when I unplug it then. Mostly it freezes when it's accidently unplugged. I'll be transferring it from a table to my bed, and it freezes. Now, could this be caused by any of the following and why? FirmwareDriversWindows OS 7UpdatesConflicting power managers (2)The DC jackThe VIDEO card Keep in mind that it does not over heat. Answer:dell inspiron 1525 plugged in not charging

You mean 60 watt and 90 watt?

Only thing I can suggest other than updating the bios, is to reset the cmos, but on that model requires you to totally disassemble the laptop to remove the cmos battery, thanks Dell.

Resetting the bios with the battery and AC adapter unplugged may allow it to start charging again, a slim possibility.

Sometimes it is a defect with the motherboard.

. My Dell Inspiron 5535 is charging only up to 66% and stops.
. I now have Windows 10, upgraded from Win 8.1 over a year ago.  It had been correctly recharging until about a few weeks ago, when it charged to 86%, and then to 68%, and now 66%.
. I have tried:  removing AC cord, re-booting, also removing battery and reseating.  I have uninstalled the Microsoft AC adapter file and the ACPI file, and they reinstalled when i powered on again.  My cords all appear in good condition.
.  computer starts and operates successfullly without the battery.
.  I tried to update the drivers, but the response was the drivers available are current.
I am "assuming" the battery is bad, but purchasing a new one might not fix this problem.
Any ideas or help please?  Thanks.

Hi JoJo827, and welcome to TSG.

It sounds like you may have the same problem as this thread dealing with a different Dell model laptop. I don't know at this point if your model has a separate power jack cable or if the jack is directly attached to the motherboard.

EDIT: If you can give us the Service Tag number of your laptop, we can determine the full and exact model number and hopefully determine if your power jack is on a cable or directly on the motherboard.

I bought this laptop -new- (Inspiron 5555) from HHGregg (a mistake, because they are not in my area anymore so I cannot return it).A few weeks after buying it, with normal usage, normal charging, the battery STOPPED charging.I have read many forum posts and seen that this is a common issue with DELL. I read some forums that said buying a new charger would work, as the battery test in BIOS says that the Battery is performing as normal, as well as running my own Battery test (also normal). This worked for a few days, and then went back to normal.I read another forum post that says to go into your BIOS and change the charging setting from Adaptive to Standard. I did this, and it did not work, as well as changing it to all the other charging settings just to see it that made a difference.I cannot update the BIOS, even if there is one, which I dont think there is, because my battery wont charge to 10%. I am stuck on 0%. So even if I wanted to unplug it to move to my desk from the couch I could not.

I have screenshots of Dell Power Manager telling me that the power adapter cannot be determined, even says this with the ORIGINAL charger. - and the "Plugged in, not charging" warning down in the bottom right taskbar.Bought this not too long ago, only a few months, cannot return, and can't afford to just go out and spend another $600-$1000 on another laptop at the moment. Many people said NOT to send it in to Dell because they will replace the motherboard/battery... Answer:Dell Inspiron 5555 (Plugged in, Not charging).

Was this purchased as a new system?   It's not  a current one - you should check to verify whether it's in warranty or not (it will need to be registered with Dell to activate the warranty):
This is a 2015 model system so even if it's new to you, it may or may not have a remaining warranty.
If the system is OUT of warranty, go into Setup (F2 at powerup) and check to make sure the AC adapter is listed there -- if it shows "unknown", the battery will not charge.  In that case, the first thing to try is a new OEM Dell AC adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, the DC jack is next to replace:
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the adapter IS recognized, will the battery charge when the system is powered off?  If it will, but won't when operating, it may be a Windows driver problem or setting.
If the system WILL NOT charge when powered off and the adapter IS recognized, chances are it's a bad battery.

This laptop is less than a year old (OS: Windows 10) and is getting the "plugged in not charging error." The unknown AC watt error pops up when booting the laptop and I have to unplug the adapter just to get to the desktop. The AC adapter will sustain the battery although it obviously drains over time when being used, but slowly. The AC adapter and battery are those which came with the laptop. Also, the backlight for the screen and LED light on the laptop do work when I plug in the adapter.
I have tried the following:
- BIOS reset- BIOS update- BIOS Diagnostic Test & Dell Diagnostic Test- Blowing into DC Jack- Testing a new Dell brand/approved ac adapter- Testing a new Dell brand/approved battery- and basically anything else Dell has suggested through its troubleshoot suggestions
Any other thoughts here? Next step is to contact technical support as the laptop is under warranty.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5559 (New) Plugged in Not Charging

Contact Dell for warranty support - one of three things is bad:  the adapter, the DC jack in the system, or the mainboard.   The warranty will cover the repair (assuming it's not due to a physically damaged adapter or DC jack).
