Preferred Solution: how to set XP to lock computer after set amount of time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: how to set XP to lock computer after set amount of time

That is a setting in the screen saver properties. You can set time and require a password.

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes.

Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post.

Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'.

If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies.

To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again.

I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest.

So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

Anybody have an idea of how to do this?

Hullo, recently my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400, running WinXP Media Edition)'s been failing; it freezes anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes after I log in. I'm unable to install an antivirus because the laptop freezes during installation. Safe Mode seems to be, well, safer, although even so it has frozen once.

I've done scans with ComboFix and MBAM; CF found a massive infestation in my pchealth and system32 folders but was able to restore everything. The system freezes just the same even after removing the threats.

I have no idea what's causing the freezing; it freezes anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes after I log in, and even freezes at login if I stay there too long.

The computer is completely frozen; Num Lock / Scroll Lock can't be activated/deactivated, the mouse doesn't move, etc. I can't even shut down without either pulling the plug out or holding onto the power button.

My HD is 91GB (Fujitsu MHV2100BH). There is 14.5GB free, although my F: partition has only 7% (or 4.5GB) free. I have 1GB of RAM installed. I have not had any problems with this laptop until recently. Or no, I have, but not relating to running out of system resources or anything related.

Thanks for reading,
Aar

So my computer would turn on not that long ago for more than 30 seconds. The fan had a problem for the fan on the motherboard, so I bought a new one and replaced it. Now my computer turns on for about an hour and then turns off suddenly. The first time it happend I though it might have been bad contact and turned it on again, but the second time it only stayed on for about half of the time. I stopped trying after that for the day. I turned it on the day after and it stayed on for about an hour, hour and a halfish. I havn't turned it on since. The fan on the computer computer is working fine, but there is only one fan. It used to work fine like this with the just one fan before it broke, but now it isn't.  Is it overheating, do I need a new fan, or is it something else. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:My computer turns of suddenly after being on for certain amount of time.

its not a fan problem. it should be smps or mother board problem. first check your smps that it giving useful power to cpu. if it is ok, then please check your motherboard.

Hello,

Word 2003 is locking up my machine it's a almost brand new machine, but after a random amount of time, it just locks up. Only when using word, however. Problem is, I can't figure out why. I've uninstalled office and re-installed, removed zone-alarm, tried different documents, etc. Locks up - but it's inconsistent. Sometimes the freeze happens right away, sometimes after an hour.

Any ideas?

ya i want my comp to goto the welcome screen afte ri set idle for say 25min. i did it on my moms and can't remember how. if i set screensaver to password on resume it just asks for mine and won't do anything unless they know mine and i don't want that..so any one know how to do this?

Answer:Gettin Computer To Goto Welcome Screen Afte Rbeing Idle For A Set Amount Of Time

I'm just guessing at this, so try it and see.

First, go to Start...Run...and type in "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then, uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Then, click OK.

Next, go to Start...Control Panel...Display...ScreenSaver tab. The little password box should now say "On resume, display Welcome Screen" (instead of asking for the password).

At least that's how it worked out on my system. If it doesn't work for you, you can easily reset it to the way it was.

Hello,

I am running genuine Windows XP, SP3.
My OS gets frequently locked, within 1 minutes of having no activity(mouse or keyboard).

I have checked the Sceensaver timer, but it is of no help.

I want to increase the computer lock timer as per my preference, but do not find this option anywehere.

Is there any registry setting or so, or if it has anything to do with group policy or anything.

I just keep unlocking my PC after no activity for 1 minute, makes it really difficult for me to read any article or e-book.

Please help.

I am not quite sure where to start...as it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Answer:Vista will password lock when computer is idle for a period of time

Hello,

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

I have a spreadsheet in which I subtract add time from several locations (h:mm). I also add amounts from various locations. I want to divide the $amount by the amount of time to get the rate per hour. I have been through all the help I can find on the system and cannot find an answer.

I would appreciate any help you can give.

Answer:Divide amount by time

To get cost per hour you need to multiply the time value by 24 first.

For example, if you have 120 (dollars) in A1 & 12:00 (12 hours) in B1, this formula in C1:

=A1/(B1*24)

should return 10.00, i.e. $10 per hour (make sure you format C1 as Number with x decimal places).

I just purchased a new motherboard/processor. I brought over my old RAM, GPU, SSD/HDD/Case. I did a fresh install, formatted/installed Windows 7. I had a few programs causing BSOD's after about 30-45 minutes of a reboot/power on, that I was able to troubleshoot(Speccy + antivirus)

I cleared it up, no BSOD's after initial 5-10 hours of up time. I went to bed, I woke up, I saw that I was crashed. My computer would reset and then just hard lock up at loading screen. If I power cycle and turned back on, it boots up with no issues. I check the event log in Computer/Manage - it pointed to a ram issue. I took each stick and ran memplus86 on it for about 5-6 passes each, no errors. I purchased a single 4gb stick to test as well.

I tried leaving my CPU with just the new single stick, same thing, BSOD after about 24 hours.

I decided to come here, I have a new symptom now, though. I have a little bit of distorted sound for the split second of the sound starting. Example, the windows "ding" sound it makes or the bootup windows sound, it's distorted and static-y for the first half a second or so.

Also, when I was creating folders/renaming them on desktop for your SF_diag tool, I had to right click- refresh to see the changes.

Answer:BSOD'ing after X amount of up time

I am currently trying dual channel with the triple channel in slots 2 and 4. Will see if I crash overnight.

First of all, using XP Home. I simply want to change the amount of time it takes for the (idle) computer to go to hibernate and welcome screen/password prompt.

I WANT there to be a password prompt after computer is idle. But right now it's set to hibernate after like 5 minutes idle, that's too quick for me. I tried going into the Power Options and changing the hibernate or Standby to one hour, but that didn't change it. I remember changing it to the 5 minutes it's at now, but can't remember how I did it...lol

Hi,

Last night I received two BSOD within 30 minutes of each other. The first time it occurred I had a few programs open (some pdfs, photoshop etc.) but I wasn't actively using the computer. I noticed the mouse pointer started to lack and a minute or two later it BSOD'd. I was busy at the time so I didn't catch the error code.

30 minutes later, after a restart and opening some of the same programs, the BSOD re-occurred.

I restarted the computer once more, kept the programs opened to a minimum and everything seemed to be okay.

Both times, after the restart, there was a screen mentioning Acer Ethernet port (I didn't note down the exact wording, sorry) requesting that I insert a boot disk and not allowing me to continue. Not having it, I forced a restart and everything booted normally afterwards.

I attempted a System Restore, but it froze on a black screen with just my cursor visible. I left it overnight and it was still on the same screen so I forced a restart.

I've completed the System report etc. and attached it.

My OS specs are:

Windows 7 Home Premium x64
It is the originally installed OEM software
Service Pack 1 is installed

My computer specs:
Acer Aspire 5732Z
Pentium(R) Dual Core CPU 2.20GHz

Please let me know if I've missed anything out. Thank you.

Many of us on the forums actually do not recommend automated optimization tools for Windows 7. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. We especially do not recommend registry cleaning as an "optimization" step because automated registry cleaning causes more harm to the registry than it actually repairs.

In the future, if you need help optimizing Windows 7, please post a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums or follow the tutorial enclosed in that forum to Optimize Windows 7.

I recently did a refresh of win8, not by choice but I was getting BSOD on boot after a bad install of nfs+ paragon .

Anyways I reinstalled almost everything but I have this problem that I notice as a audio problem at first but seems to be much bigger. I will open a video on youtube say, the video will play but there will be no audio. I go to open the audio control panel or anything pertaining to it, the window for it will either freeze or refuse to open at all. Aside from that, after I noticed this or even before I notice this I also can't open up most apps, noticeably steam games, they will start too load but then freeze on load. No Idea what is causing this and I don't know what else to upgrade driver wise. Very fed up since the refresh could have been avoided in the first place...

Answer:Audio loss after X amount of time?

This is more than an audio problem. Suggest you consider reposting on one of the other forums. The "General Support" may be a good place to start. There is obviously OS problems.

Hi I would like to set some time to a computer or access to the internet to be more specific from the persons that use the same profile.
Since I have the administrator account, the other users have contradictions as to the amount of time each has to use the internet, I'm knowledgeable to software such as handy cafe and cyber cafe but these are for server-client (networking eg. internet cafe), I would just like to use a software or any other type option to give each user a specific amount of time each person has to use the internet or computer without having each user log off.

I have had this problem a few months ago which I had solved (at least I thought so) with system restore but the situation is a bit more severe because, whatever is happening, it is deleting my restore points.

This really is a spur of the moment kind've thing without warning. My PC was working immaculately until the day before yesterday. I usually always leave my PC on overnight or whenever I go to sleep. I got up yesterday morning and discovered that the PC had crashed to the bios screen. It absolutely would not start for a few times for who knows what reason and I had to keep trying system diagnostics. I thought I might've been hit by a virus and it was being antagonised by the scan I was running that night. After finding nothing wrong and discovering I had no restore points for about half an hour, I managed to get the PC started again and it didn't seem like anything was actually wrong.

When I checked task manager, I discovered that hardly any processes or programs were starting up. I used the PC that day as usual and nothing at all seemed out of place except for the fact the PC was very quiet, could barely even hear any sort of disk activity at all. So I left it on overnight again, this time without running a scan, came back to it this morning and discovered it had crashed again, this time to the login screen (this could've happened any number of times that night, to my knowledge.) I logged in and the exact same thing happens, next to no processes running, hardly any... Read more

Make and model number of everything found inside the PC? GPU, PSU, MOBO, etc.

Download HWMonitor from here:

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Make sure to download the .zip file to your desktop.

Once downloaded to your desktop unzip the hwmonitor.zip folder to your desktop.

Open up the unzipped folder and run either the 32bit Software or 64bit Software. How to tell the difference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218
Allow HWMonitor to run while the PC is at an idle state. After about five minutes of running at idle take a screenshot and save the image to your desktop.

Now allow HWMonitor to run while gaming or doing heavy processing for about five minutes. Take another screenshot and save the image to your desktop.

The games crash after an inconsistent amount of time like stated. Sometimes the games crash after 1 or 2 minutes, sometimes after 1,2 or even 3 hours. This happens most in GTA:V and Minecraft. It is unplayable in its current state. The pc is brand new ( less than one month old).
My specs are :
Motherboard: ASROCK as350m pro 4.
CPU: ryzen 5 1600
RAM: Corsair Venegance LPX 2x8gb (CMK16GX4M2A2400C14) @2400mhz
GPU: GTX 1070 8GB
Hard Drive: 1tb wd blue 7200RPM
PSU: EVGA 650w G2 Supernova.
ssd: 128gb Segate

I have tried reinstalling windows, reinstalling gpu drivers, using different gpu drivers, overclocking cpu, returning cpu to normal speed, setting ram to 2400mhz in bios (it came tuned @ 2133mhz), setting the ram back to 2133mhz, reinstalling games, and being very frustrated. My temps are low, gpu<50 and cpu<40 on full load, so temps are definitely not the problem.
I usually find Minecraft crashes quicker if I use optifine , and even quicker if I use shaders aswell.

Any help/advice is much appreciated!

Answer:My internet stops working after a certain amount of time

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CMESys] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\CMEII\CMESYS.EXE"
O4 - Startup: GStartup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe
Next reboot into Safe Mode and remove the following files and folders that are bolded
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\CMEII\CMESYS.EXE"
C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT\GMT.exe

See here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...001052409420406 for how to start in safe mode if you don't know how.

Reboot into normal mode
Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

Thanks

Hey people! Hope y'all are well!

Is there at all any possible way I can force Steam to auto launch at system startup after at least 1 minute after log on? For some reason at the moment Steam will try to connect before my Internet connection has made a connection and it just sits idle as if it was never opened but the processes are running. :/ I always have to force close via Task Manager and then launch Steam again.

Hi there!

So, the problem is that my pc freezes after a random amount of time. One time it crashes after 10 minutes, another time after an hour, and then before I've even seen the windows 10 logo.
It also doesn't really seem to matter what I do, it crashes when I am playing a game, it crashes when typing a word document and it crashes when I just leave it on the desktop.
PC SPECS:
Cpu:FX-6300
GPU:R9 380
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB)
Motherboard: Asrock 970 pro 3 r 2.0
ssd: 120 GB
hdd: 1TB
PSU: Coolermaster G750M

What I've tried so far:
Changing the PSU, switching the ram modules and using different slots, switching the gpu with a radeon HD 7770. I can't really switch out any more hardware as I don't have anything to switch for example the motherboard with.
I also reinstalled windows 10.

If someone knows the solution to my problem, I'd be very grateful

I'm running my sound through a Line 6 KB37 interface and out through some studio monitors. However yesterday after having Spotify on from 30 - 60mins the sound stopped, Spotify crashed, i tried to restart and explorer.exe couldn't shutdown because it was stuck trying to play the logoff sound. I force restarted it and it turned into a BSOD. Today the same thing has happened after about 30mins of watching a film. The sound stopped and media player crashed. I tried to watch a youtube video after this and it wouldn't buffer it and crashed my browser. I checked my device manager and it said all my sound devices were working properly. Any ideas?

Answer:Sound Card Seems to Shut Off After a Certain Amount of Time

I doubt that it's the sound that is causing it. There is some other system problems.

(I have a studio currently with Sonar X1 but I recently installed PT MP9 and will be moving to Pro Tools later).

Since saturday morning I've been having a problem with all my browsers.
Problem started with chrome crashing and not wanted to open anymore after the crash. Restarted and it seemed fine but after a while it crashed again and once again didn't want to open anymore.
Restarted and started using Edge which seemed fine, but after a while no pages load anymore and the loading wheel keeps spinning.
I deleted all cookies, cleared cache from all browsers, deleted chrome and reinstalled it. But it keeps happening.
I then downloaded Firefox, which wasn't on this laptop prior to the problem and it has the same problem as Edge, after x amount of time the browser doesn't load any pages, new tabs or a new page remains white and the loading wheel keeps spinning.

Every time i restart ALL browsers work for X amount of time (varies from 2 min to 4 hours). Once one of them stops working, all of them stop working.
When the browsers are down however, Skype keeps working, i can still continue the call i was having (dunno if i can make a new call when the browsers are down, have not tried that).
Also documents from google Drive that are open in Firefox (Chrome crashes so it doesnt work here) keep saving the changes that i make, but new tabs i open in that page remain white and keep loading. Have not tried it with edge but i might later tonight.
My second laptop and my phone do not have any problems with connections while the browsers are down.

Hey guys,

So I have an LCD monitor that's decently old (4+ years, but only 2.5 years of use). Whenever I turn it on, it works for a decent amount of time, sometimes up to 45 minutes to an hour. However, after that time, the screen will just turn black. My computer will still be running normally, I just can't see anything on my monitor. The LED on the monitor is still green.

If I turn off my monitor and turn it back on, it will work for X amount of time. X depends solely on how long I leave the monitor off for. If I turn it off for 10 seconds and turn it back on, the monitor will work for about 2 seconds. If I turn it off for a whole night, it'll work for about 45 minutes again.

Other monitors have worked with my video card, albeit they were DVI and not VGA (which is what my current monitor is).

So what is the problem? Is it because my monitor is too old? Is it fixable? Thanks.

Jeremy

hi everyone. I was given a friend's computer and have been trying to fix it all week, and have been unsuccessful. It's a Dell Inspiron 600m on Windows XP, Service Pack 3 with all the latest windows updates. It had AVG 8 free on it, then my friend installed Paretologic virus scanner on top of AVG 8. He also installed Malwarebytes. Then he gave it to me. I ran the virus scanner at security.symantec.com and that found nothing. I uninstalled the paretologic software. I tried to upgrade AVG free 8 to AVG free 9 and the install process froze, so I uninstalled both. (not sure if the uninstall for any of the virus software actually worked successfully, even though I did not get any errors.) I then installed the latest Kaspersky and it found Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.d so in my haste and not reading enough before running, I downloaded and ran ComboFix. It got to stage 32 and then froze. I eventually canceled it, reset the computer, and uninstalled it using combofix /uninstall. It looks like it did quarantine one file though, but I forget the name, it was a .sys file. I then ran a full scan with Kaspersky and that did not show any viruses. I also then ran a full scan of Malwarebytes and that found some cookies that I deleted. I used to have this thing when I started up my PC when I clicked 2 or more tabs on FF very soon after first opening it the net just crapped itself and wouldn't let anything net related open, aside from mIRC if it was open prior to the net going down but I couldn't open a new one, only fix was restarting. If I waited like 5-10 mins after startup it never happened. The internet icon never changed and the troubleshooter would always say it was working fine. Recently it's started happening at random times no matter how long the PC has been on even if I just click a forum banner or something- everything internet related will stop working/refuse to open other than my mIRC window if it was already connected, but I can't PM anyone or join any new channels. Usually lasts 5-10 minutes and then the FF page that froze will load and everything will work again. I've also tried IE and Chome, same result.

It's become extremely annoying now as it's very frequent and can last from as little as 5 minutes to 32 mins(longest so far). I've downloaded nothing new/added no new hardware and the PC is a gaming PC that I built around a year and a bit ago.

I've scanned with MBAM, Nod32, and Zone Alarm, they've come up with nothing. I'm really hoping someone here has an idea what's wrong because I'm very close to just reinstalling to get rid of this huge annoyance.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:everything internet related stops working for x amount of time

It's probably something running in the background since all browsers are affected. Try changing your AV from automatic to notifying you so you can update definitions manually. Think of other programs that are set to run in the background or since you built the unit, if your fans are sufficient since heat can cause the problem.

I just upgraded my Windows 7 setup to Windows 8 and I'm sort of regretting it now. It takes around 3 minutes to shut down sometimes. It just displays the plain screen with "Shutting Down" and the rotating orb for 3 minutes then shuts down. And if I close my laptop's lid during this, next time I open it, I *still* see that screen. So my laptop goes to sleep *while* shutting down and wakes up in the same state. This blows my mind.

Also, another issue. If my laptop goes to sleep automatically because of very little battery left. Then if I connect my charger and try to wake it up, it takes around 3-4 minutes here as well.

Any clue how to troubleshoot these problems? Priority being the shut down problem.

Answer:Shutdown/Wake up takes a HUGE amount of time

What you described happened to me once, and I realized that there were Windows updates being applied. Since your system is "new" maybe you are not yet caught up on updates.

Sometimes the Windows 8 is "doing maintenance.' I don't know if a shut down during that time would cause this foolishness.

If neither of the above I would hope that it is a driver issue and try updating, starting with the chipset.

This is my preferred order for finding drivers:

1. PC manufacturer's web site,
2. Motherboard manufacturer's web site,
3. Device manufacturer's web site,
4. A "drivers" site, such as DriverGuide,
5. Anywhere you can find one that might work,
6. Let Device Manager try to find one.
7. Use Windows Update.

(4 through 7 are really tied, and with Windows 7--and maybe 8-- the Windows Update should be at least 4th. The main message is that the first three are almost always to be preferred.)

My desktop is in my bedroom, and I have a magicjack connected to it, so the computer needs to be on like always in order to receive phone calls. I was wondering if I could have the system go into like extreme power saving mode after an hour or two of not using the computer. I haven't really looked into this yet, so if the answer is obvious, I apologize, but I do not recall any real power saving features built into Windows 7. I'd like want to have the GPU use just enough to function, the cpu do the same, and then my room would be much quieter and cooler.

Answer:Power saver mode to enter after certain amount of time?

Have you enabled SpeedStep?

I have always used AMD, so I know it as Cool'n'Quiet. Reduces my CPU's power by 60%, which allows for the PWM fan to slow down to a **** near stop. Since I use an ASUS board, my BIOS settings for enabling the PWM fan adjustment is Q-Fan.

I'm not sure what/if there is a function like that in Gigabyte motherboards, but EasyTune 5 will allow for you to control the RPMs of the fans.

Don't know if I should do this but to get rid of Virtumondo you have to download [email protected] because Virtumonde is most likely embedded to explorer.exe. Find the .dll that is infected and delete it with GiPO, then restart your computer in Safe Mode with Command Prompt and try to delete the .dll from there. If it says it doesn't exist then GiPo did delete it. If it isn't embedded into explorer.exe then it is running with another program, you just have to find which program it is. Good luck with that.

Now my real question,

Hello everyone, I have a very strange problem with the audio of my Envy and I couldn't find any solution on the forum. It stop working  (from both the speakers and the headpones) randomly, i don't get any error and the icons say that everything is working normally: even the Windows 10 audio troubleshooter is useless.Sometimes the fix is just restarting the pc but sooner or later the audio will disappear again. I even tried the Bios troubleshooter but i could not find any problem. The driver I'm using is the IDT 6.10.6491.0.

Hi, I'm having a very annoying problem with my computer and hope someone can help me.

Basically, if I turn my computer off, if I turn it back on it wont boot unless it's been turned off/unplugged for (usually) at least an hour and a half/two hours. What happens when I turn it on within that time, is my monitor just says "No Signal" and the light stays orange instead of blue like it should be. The computer still sounds like it's coming on, but nothing goes through to the monitor.

It used to happen occasionally when I tried to resume from sleep or hibernate mode, but now it seems to happen any time I turn it off. When I turn it off at night, it's always alright when I turn it on the next day (touch wood), so it seems to need a rest of a specific length for some reason.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? Thanks!

Answer:Windows wont boot unless it's been off for a decent amount of time

Is this a HP computer? Try turning it off and then unplug the power, hold in the power button for 15 seconds. Plug back in and start up the computer. Does it boot normally?

My boss wants to copy a powerpoint presentation to a disk (it would have to be a CD or DVD) and make it unreadable after a certain amount of time. Is this possible? If not, is it possible to burn the file to a disk and not allow it to be copied from that disk?

Answer:Can you save a file on a disk and make it unreadable after a certain amount of time?

This would be very difficult to do, and probably wouldn't work anyway for anyone savvy enough to reset the system clock.

But you can password-protect a CD.

This one claims time-limited access:

My D 200gb SATA hard drive disappears around 1-90 mins while on windows 7. I have tried registry repairs and alot of things. Someone please help, most of my important data is on my 200gb D drive and i only use C for my os and some other things like Firefox because its only 80gb so someone please help

Answer:D SATA Hard Drive disappears after random amount of time.

Hi cheezstik and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

Did you have this same problem when running XP? Have you tried a different SATA port, and are you using a latching SATA cable? I would consider backing this disk up to an external drive just in case this is indicative of an impending drive failure. If you have SMART enabled for this drive, what is it reporting? Finally, if you have access to a digital multimeter, you could back-probe the power connector to the drive to see if there is a problem from that angle. Be careful that you don't cause a short-circuit whilst doing so.

I have been fighting with this for some time and I can't figure out what it is. Over time, my Paged Pool memory usage keeps climbing until eventually I have to reboot to clear it out. It is a tough problem to search for because most people seem to have a problem with non-paged pool memory and all of those problems get included in the search results.

I have 32GB of RAM and once the paged pool reaches around 18GB or so it starts to bog down and get sluggish. And when I say 18GB, I mean 18GB with nothing open. I have my typical tray stuff, which I have tried killing, but nothing releases the RAM. I have let it climb all the way to 32GB before, but then the computer becomes useless and took about a half hour or so to shut down.

When I run Rammap it shows that paged pool is huge, and in the process list there is a process called MemCompression that has an extremely large amount of RAM in use. Not the full size of the paged pool, but definitely really big.

There are several threads talking about using Poolmon to track down processes using lots of paged or non-paged pool memory, but the process on mine that is extremely large has a tag of Se, which is tough to search for in the strings because virtually every file has Se in it somewhere.

Right now I just rebooted again, so the usage is back to "normal" (if you consider 11GB memory in use normal for just having Chrome open) and my paged pool is around 2GB or so. It will increase again by this evening, so I will g... Read more

I'm hoping someone can assist me here. I've been doing as much investigation on my own that i can, but i'm not really sure where i should be looking next.

I've recently upgraded my hardware (cpu/mem/board) and installed win7 64bit at the same time. I ran win7 64 previous to the upgrade, but i did a clean install due to raid controller changes.

I'm getting a full freeze/BSOD whilst playing games for an amount of time. Sometimes i've used the system for a while and then started a game and had it crash, other times (mostly) i've had it crash after a while of playing games.

Windows usage does not produce a crash, that said, i did have one crash after about 15 mins of rebooting (yet again) from a BSOD.

Here's the latest dump, let me know if i've missed something or need to supply more info.

Thanks.

Since I moved to college, I decided to ship the desktop I built to my apartment. I had invested a decent amount into it so I didn't want to go many many months without using it. I decided to ship it via USPS after taking it apart. I thought that would have made it safe enough to ship, but I was mistaken seeing as the packages were handled so poorly there is now a huge dent in the corner of my steel tower where the PSU is mounted. Luckily I had invested in the insurance option and I got some money for damaged parts.

Unforunately for me I now get BSOD's when using my computer. It can be anywhere from a crash during startup to 20 minutes of fine usage before it dies. I've only managed to see the details of the BSOD once (always immediately starts up again) and it said that there was a unrecoverable hardware error. I suspect that it is the hard drive that is failing, but then again I'm no expert at hardware issues and figured that this would be a good place to start. I want to know which parts I need to replace to get it fully functioning again. I hope that it is just the HDD as I am just a poor college student

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Since about a week now after a variable amount of time my system is unable to start programs that aren't already running. Some of the already running also crash when this happens. Shutting the system down or restarting in this state is impossible, the system seems to try but doesn't succeed. When I try it command line via the shutdown command the countdown starts and finishes but the shutdown stals when the system tries to log the current user of.

What could have happened to have caused this? I'm not sure, the only program I installed before this started happening is the open source game widelands (http://xoops.widelands.org/) which does have a tendency to crash in a very unclean fashion.

I did all the steps from the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure and have attached the logs. Except the one for AVG Anti-Spyware. When I did that scan my system got in the state described above. It did finish the scan, I was just unable to export the report (maybe that happens in a different thread or something?). The scan ended up quarantining one item: Adware.dudu located in c:\windows\system32\pCastCtl.dll . If you need me to redo the scan I will, I just wasn't sure if it was needed (and it's quite a long scan )

I'm not sure if this is a malware problem but it could be. Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Answer:System unable to start programs after variable amount of time

I'm not seeing any malware ....but there are things you need to do:
Uninstall:
J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 6"
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
Java(TM) 6 Update 2

Disable the guest account in the user accounts.

Install SP2 ....although you may need to do a repair install first to correct any problems you are having.

Tell me what this is:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\MB90F4.EXE ----> if you don't know, delete it.

I have a problem that has been puzzling and annoying me very much for the past week or so. I have no problem connecting to the network but at random times I lose connection to the internet for a few seconds or a few minuites. I never lose connection to the network though. My playstation 3 has a wired connection directly to the modem as does the computer in the living room, and those units never lose connection. How ever my computer in my room along with my xbox 360, which is also in my room, loses connection wirelessly. My xbox and this computer DO NOT have this problem at other people houses so I'm thinking it must be my router (Linksys E1000). The wireless adapter I have on my computer is a Linksys WMP600N Dual Band. Both the router and my wireless card have the lastest firmware and I have also tried giving my computer a static IP along with the Xbox and forwarding the ports for it. Still does not work for me. I am able to connect to my neighbors internet which has no problems with connection other than the fact that its laggy since i am far from their router. I really dont want to go out and buy a new router so any help anyone could give me would be awesome!

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
2011 HP dv6t laptop
i7-2820QM processor
4 gigs of RAM
Radeon HD 6770m graphics

Starting yesterday, my screen will occasionally go black for variable amounts of time. Typically it will go black for one second, then back to normal for two or three, then black for about ten seconds, then back to normal for a while. However the screen isn't just black, there is also a little bit of RGB fuzz/noise on the left side of the screen. Typically it has occurred when just browsing with chrome or browsing the steam store, so it seems like it couldn't be anything being overworked...

Is this just some setting that's overloading, or is my graphics card starting to die, or is it some visible symptom of malware, or something completely different?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Screen randomly goes black for random amount of time w/ small amt of fuzz

wreck9967,

Yeah it sounds like a video card issue. The solder connecting the gpu to the motherboard may not have a good connection. If the lapop at one point got hot enough it could cause some of those solder joints to go bad. i.e. if you are using a blanket and have the laptop on top of it. The blanket covers the vents and you do not notice. The laptop will get really hot.
I had something similar happen in my older mac book pro. I reflowed the solder on my motherboard and that fixed the issue. If the a fan is not working or works some of the time that could cause it to overheat. Without a fan it can overheat very easily.

Hello,
I have, as I see it, a very unique problem with my computer.
I turn my computer on, and sound works, I can turn on winamp, play music etc.
But, after random amount of time, my sound driver just disappears, when go to
Control Panel and Sound and Audio Devices, it says I have no driver/sound card.

Funny thing is, when I open winamp at the beginning when it works, it continues to play music even when it already says I have no sound, I can even add more stuff to winamp, but ONCE I turn it off, It wont open again because I have no sound drivers!
The amount of time before this happens varies, once it was hour and a half, but not it was only 15 minutes. Of course, Im still listening to music, because I havent turned off winamp yet (although, any other program I start after the malfunction, sound wont work with it).

I tried to reinstall my drivers, but I couldnt find a way how to remove everything from Device manager under "Sound, Audio and Gaming Devices", but nothing changed. When I removed what I could, windows found it as new hardware, but didnt want to install new drivers since "the latest possible version is installed". Sound of course wasnt working, until I installed drivers I downloaded from the net, but then it just returned to where it is now.
Also, right now, device manager tells me everything runs ok, but "Sound" in Control Panel says I have no drivers.

I have no idea what this is, and I want to use system reinstall as... Read more

Hello

I have a Toshiba Satellite P200 PSPB6A-17804M that hangs when I have not touched the keyboard or mouse for a period of time.

The O/S is Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit version and specs for model are as link. But with an ATI HD2600 128MB Video.

Link: [Link To Same Model Laptop|http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TOSHIBA-SATELLITE-P200-2.6GHZ-400GB-17.0%22-WX+-200-DVD_W0QQitemZ120369598613QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ2009 0127?IMSfp=TL090127161001r18426]

I have updated all Toshiba updates including the 2.50 bios update.

Problem
When left lone for s short period of time, my system hangs, though my mouse still moves. Clicking anywhere on screen or using the keyboard does not seem to bring it back to a working mode. The only way I can then use my laptop is to do a hard restart by holding the power button for 5 seconds.

My system seems to run fine so long as i don't stop using the mouse or keyboard.
The time between when i last used the computer and when it hangs can range from 5 minutes to 10 hours.

I have turned off all Power Saving settings including Video Saving mode to no avail.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks Batty.

Your issue sounds really strange? did you try to reinstall the Windows OS and to check if the issue would still appears?

I?m not sure if this could be a software problem but you should test it before we would discuss about any other hardware possible problems?

Hi,
The setting described in the topic was set to 15 minutes on the workstation GPO. User complain that they get the following errors in Adobe InDesign:
The network connection was lost for the file
*OpenedFile*.indd, or the file was modified by another process.
I think this setting is causing the issues.
More details about the setting: https://technet.microsoft.com/sv-se/library/cc776037(v=ws.10).aspx
My question is about the default settings on a workstation, what does "undefined" mean? What is default on a Win 8.1 machine? Should I disable the setting from the policy or set it to 99999 (effectively disabling it)?

Thanks

Hello all,
Please feel free to move this if it's in the wrong place, but I'm really stumped here. I've recently been doing some work on my mother's computer (helping her set up Outlook, verifying that her connection to my print server and file server is successful all the time), and I've noticed some very odd things. None of the usual keyboard commands work for her as they work for me. Like for instance, I can't use ALT+F4 to close windows, F7 to bring up the spell checker in Office programs, and I'm sure there are many others I haven't found. The other issue occurs when certain programs are running. System
access is a screen reader made by the company Serotek, and I was using it to access the computer. I had it running via it's to go interface (which means that it's running as a web based service), and it would run really well for about ten minutes, and then it would simmer down to the point of unresponsiveness. I'd have to shut down Internet Explorer and then log back into it to get it back. I had the strangest episode with it last week too. That time, when I launched the add a printer wizard with SA running, a score of the "Assertion failed" errors popped up citing the Visual C++ runtime as the cause of the error with a .CPP source file as the offending file. Can I ask what the heck is going on here? Any possible feedback you folks might have would be very helpful because the administrator side of me is runn... Read more

I'm in need of a second tech opinion here.

A family member gave me a HP Pavilion a1000 desktop PC with an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+ to mess around with and make into an auxiliary machine to have laying around.

Without getting into more technical details than necessary the machine came with
1Gb of PC3300 RAM (it's correct factory default for the processor installed) I just happen to have
4Gb of PC2700 RAM laying around and I tested the machine and it appears to work just fine with the slower RAM.

The Question Is...

Would you rather have 1Gb of
PC3300 RAM or
4Gb of PC2700 RAM installed on a machine?
Am I a fool to go with the slower speed RAM?  Why?

The system seems much faster with the larger amount of slower memory (?)  How much really is the difference in the RAM speed jump between PC3300 and PC2700 RAM?   Would it be a significantly crippling
difference or not so much?

Further, I tried adding the 2 1Gb PC2700 memory to the 2 512Mb PC3300 memory and the system reports it all
is running as PC2700 (I was hoping that the speed could be split between banks but I guess not - yea, I already knew that) So I just added the 1Gb PC2700 memory to all four banks and I'm calling it a night. Am I sadly mistaken in some respect to prefer the
4Gb slower RAM here?
If it matters then I'm using the machine with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 installed though I do intend upon giving Windows 10 a try with this machine

Two years ago, I bought a computer. The computer has an Intel motherboard. That time, Intel website claimed that the maximum amount of RAM is 4gb, and so did the seller. Now, Intel changed the motherboard specifications by reducing the amount of maximum RAM to be 2gb. Thesedays, although Intel reduced the maximum RAM in specifications to 2gb, I'm thinking of increasing the amount of RAM to 4gb, so would there be risks over my computer because of doing that? If so, what are they?

I have an Athlon 650, 512 MB PC running Windows 2000 server edition running Internet Connection Sharing (for cable modem), and IIS 5.0 for several web sites. I also use it as a file server. I usually leave it just sitting there and just update things every once in a while. I don't even have a monitor hooked to it. Should I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and click the "lock computer" or log out? Would this make it more secure somehow to hacks? I haven't had any problems yet, but I just want it secure as possible.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey!
Ive been finding my computer has been using alot of my ram (around 3.5gb - 4 gb) when there is very little running. nothing at all making up to 4gb.

As you can see there is alot of Ram being used for the amount of processes and programs running. I have done a malware scan with kaspersky, Malwarbytes and with spyhunter. All of which cleaned my system. I am now wondering what else it could be?
I was thinking it could be a memory leak but i dont know where from.

If anyone has any ideas at all please do tell.

Hey there, new to this site.

I went to turn on my computer today and noticed something strange while the computer was still off. The CPU fan is receiving a small amount of juice just enough to power the LED's but not the fan. Also my PSU is making a clicking sound which I believe is the PSU's fan since it always did have some friction somewhere and the clicking sound "winds down" when I completely unplug the power supply. Listening to the clicking sound, the fan is obviously running slow. No other case fans or components seem to be receiving any power and this all happens when the computer is off. The computer still boots up and seems to run absolutely fine but I didn't keep it on to do any tests. Is something wrong with the power supply or something else? Thank you very much for your time.

Yeah mm'K, Belarc probably reports 112 only because your video memory might be shared or soemthing. Anyways check your motherboard pecs. The books dude. It all depends on your motherboard. Look in your motherboards manual, it answers that very question your asking.

Hello to all, I have a strange situation that i couldn't find in the other topics. Sorry if i missed it out somewhere. We are in an office having 15 computers connected through a Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL. We have one computer which is the storage for all our work files. All the internal ip's are taken through DHCP. The router have a static IP and all the internet goes through it. Everything works really fine until a certain moment when some of the computers (not the storage one) is unable to connect to the storage computer. I noticed that this happens when a lot of packets has been sent/received on the storage pc. When repairing the network connection problem still exists. When disable->enable the connection the packets are back to 0 and then everything works fine again. Is the problem in the storage computer or in the router? The storage computer is a windows XP, SP3, P4 3GHZ, 1GB Ram . Does anyone know of a patch or something to fix this issue? Thanks in advance.

Answer:computer invisible/unreachable after certain amount of packets

It's not the router, it has no effect on internal LAN traffic. That sounds like something with your "storage computer". I have no idea what is going on there, but I'd be looking at applications running at startup first.

What kind of numbers for packet counts are you seeing when the problem occurs?

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

I am attempting to clean up a terrible problem with popups making a computer unusable. I hae attempted to follow all instructions completely. Unfortunately, Spybot is unable to remove many of the offenders (Command Service, LSA, Windows Security Center, etc.). Also, due to the problems with the popups, the computer is inundated and locks up before any of the online services (Housecall) complete their scan. Cleanmgr locks up when attempting to run. I appreciate any help and I'm willing to devote time and energy to get my daughters computer working again. Thanks in advance,Jim P.HIJack This logLogfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 9:11:54 PM, on 2/5/2006Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exeC:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exeC:\WINDOWS\Smlt\comm... Hello,

All of the sudden yesterday my computer just decided to start running very slowly. Nothing really changed with the exception of me installing the new Java update that my computer told me it needed. Now, at all times, all the items in my task manager use a huge amount of memory and I am completely unable to multitask. Right now, Firefox is using 180,000K of memory and this is the only website I have up, as well as the only program that I am running. Neither Firefox or IE ever used to use this much memory. I have included a screenshot of the task manager from when I first restarted my computer today. I have restarted, defragged, cleaned up the disk, everything. My specs are as follows:

Dell Laptop, Intel Celeron M Processor 1.40 Ghz, 504mb of RAM, 80gb hard drive (hard drive is brand new).

Even when Firefox or IE is the only thing running, some websites bog the entire computer down and it stalls for minutes without moving. Then, all of the sudden, it catches up with itself and does everything I tried to do while it was frozen. I know I don't have a lot of RAM and it isn't the newest and fastest system out there, but the sudden onset of this makes me think that my computer isn't just outdated, something changed in the system. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? How can I stop all these applications from using so much memory and be able to multitask and stream online media again?

Here is the link to the task manager screenshot:

Firstly I have a Toshiba personal computer (laptop) with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I had Norton Antivirus but that expired some six months ago and since then I've been using McAfee Internet Security. I regularly download things with Utorrent (which I've just uninstalled).

The problem: (AT BOTTOM FIND DDS TEXT AND ATTACHMENT)

Around 3 months ago ads started popping up constantly in ANY browser I used - explorer, firefox and google chrome. I resorted to downloading ABP (Ad Block Pro) for Chrome and it consistently blocks a huge number of popups. Just last week though suddenly my computer slowed down to a near standstill (I thought it had completely frozen), which had never happened before. I had to hold down the power button to turn it off and each time I rebooted it , it would last anything between 2min -30min running normally before this happened again. When it "freezes" the processor still seems to flux every 3 seconds, and if I have the task manager open i can see that the processor percentage is on 0%, then every few seconds moves to 12% then immediately back to 0%, regardless of the applications I have open or the tasks it should be performing. Essentially the laptop in that state is incredibly slow and unusable. I don't know why this started happening or what exactly causes it to happen randomly, but I ran ccleaner, and then defraggler (the laptop didnt freeze during these processes. The problem persisted and I have since backed up personal ... Read more

I have a similar problem with Outlook 365, but it only happens when I try to respond or create an email. Most times I just have to close outlook and restart it and do not do anything except to create that email otherwise it will freeze up again, and become non-responsive.Any suggestions?I have done the uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, actually had Office 365 tech do it remotely, it works for a day or 2 and then starts acting up again.message edited by gbkane40

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Thanks

Answer:Lock Screen Slideshow Time Out

Never mind. I went into the Registry and checked it out.

Yes, the same exact rules apply here like in Windows 8.1
